2024.05.11 06:26 5chr0dinger Slow wifi speed on linux (mint)
Pretty much the title. I am experiencing slow internet speed via mobile hotspot, while I was in windows it was as fast as it should be. I tried usb tethering and it gives the same speed as windows but to keep phone connect all the time is not a proper solution.
I've tried installing newer kernel, different distros, wifi power saving solution but the speed is still slow, even tried configuring mobile hotspot though it is no brainer since the same configuration gives 25 times faster speed in windows
Specs: Lenovo Ideapad 330-15IKB Operating System: Linux mint 21.3 Cinnamon Version: 6.0.4 Linux Kernel: 5.15.0-106-generic Processor: I5-8250u @ 1.60 GHz x4 Memory: 8GB dual channel Hard Drives: 1TB Graphics Card: Intel uhd 620 Display Server: x11
wifi: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 31)
Please help me out
Edit: I have just switched fully last night (12hrs ago)

2024.05.04 12:07 muralikrishnan01 No Wifi Module found on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Lenovo-E41-25 Laptop)
I installed ubuntu 5 days back on my not so old Lenovo-E41-25 Laptop. Because, Windows couldn't even handle VSCode and Brave browser for my Full Stack Project on this lap. After installtion when I tried to connect Wi-fi I couldn't find anywhere. I've tried bunch of things from watching YouTube videos to blog articles to solve this problem. Nothing worked for me. Hope, someone could help me fix this issue or will throw this laptop away and start working on PC rather.

2024.04.22 18:45 DawnLeCat wifi issue with Macos 10.6.8
I'm running a Mac mini server 2010 on Macos snow leopard 10.6.8, and whenever I connect to my wifi, the Mac behaves normally for like 30 seconds before giving me an infinite beach ball when I try doing anything, opening an app, clicking on an already open app, it'll spin as long as I let it. It leaves me with no option but shutting it down and powering it back on, it works normally when I connect to my hotspot or other networks, only the one causes this issue. I couldn't find anything online about this or anyone else having this issue

2024.04.18 11:43 StrayFeral WIFI problem with Debian and derivative distros
Hello,
No idea if I am the only one with this problem, but I am fed up already. It happens on different laptops (one is Lenovo, the other is Dell), happens with different distros - the Lenovo have Debian 12 installed, the Dell is on Lubuntu 22.04 LTS.
PROBLEM: Sometimes (can't determine the exact conditions and time intervals) the laptop disconnects from the WIFI and what usually solves the problem is restart (haven't tried other options to reconnect) - it does not just disconnect, it basically looks like the laptop's WIFI is turned off at all - no WIFI networks are visible.
The Lenovo laptop also runs Windows 10 on dual-boot - this never happens when I boot the Windows.
The Dell wifi card is: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 32) (I think the Lenovo also have a Qualcomm wifi card) (again - this laptop runs only linux, single boot)
So questions are:
- Am I the only one to experience this problem?
- Ideas please - what could I do (let's say command-line) to try to reboot the wifi service and most importantly - to make sure the wifi card is alive (Windows somehow keeps it active, so obviously there IS a way)
- Ideas why this happens? Again - different distros, different laptops, never on Windows, both distros are Debian/derivative
IMPORTANT: This happened to me in the last 4-5 years. So we don't talk ONLY for this Debian and this Lubuntu versions.
Thank you!

2024.04.15 14:40 girldownunderAU Chasing a driver for the wifi half-height card RTK8821AE for Mint 21.3
Hi good folks at linux4noobs!
I'm chasing a driver for the wifi half-height card RTK8821AE. It's sitting in a dedicated slot on my
H97M-ITX/ac mobo and I'd like to get it to work properly in Linux Mint 21.3 Mate. The BT works, but not the wifi. I could try an add-in PCIe card, but I wanted to use a graphics card in the only 16x slot at some point. Also, the stupid USB ports on the back were designed by monkeys so if you insert ANYTHING into one port, you block others! So, I would really like to get the wifi card going. If I cannot, can you recommend a card of the same type that does?
Can some kind soul please help & walk me through this? I'm familiar with terminal & commands, but not much more. Thank you!

2024.04.14 16:04 Akira_Shiroo Can't launch games in Steam
I recently installed arch linux with kde plasma and X11. When I try to launch a game, some of them will just close immediately. For the others, Steam says that they are open when nothing is happening. I added PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the launching parameters of a game that closes immediately, and I get the following error : 258.504:0020:0110:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded. 258.504:0020:0110:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow L"Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly."

2024.03.18 22:39 HelpMeFindARealJob 5k Snow White Hyte Y70 build for VR and 3D Sculpting
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
- Primarily used for VR gaming (VRChat in heavily populated and unoptimized worlds/events, Flight Sims, etc). Will also be used for 3d modelling/sculpting (Zbrush/Blender) and streaming all of the above.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
- ~5k USD, can fudge an extra $500 or so if it makes or breaks anything.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
- PC internal components only. Snow White Hyte Y70 Tower already purchased, additional peripherals (Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor(s), etc will be obtained separately
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
- USA, No ready access to Microcenter
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
- Current monitors, keyboard, mouse, microphone, speakers, and external 10TB HD will be used and gradually updated to match all white aesthetic/performance levels over time.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
- I prefer stability over squeaking out every last drop of performance. If there's a two button push overclock option that is stable I will do that, otherwise it will likely be run as is.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
- I would like 128gb or 192 gb of ram at 6000 mhz or better if at all possible. I have been researching this a lot and feel like I am left with more questions than answers... Soooo.... I'm just going to smile and nod and trust that you know better than I do what is and isn't possible hardware-wise.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
- PC will be wired primarily, but WiFi 7 compatibility is a plus if possible without too much fuss
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
- Snow White Hyte Y70 Touch case already purchased. Looking to have an all white build with pink LED's/accents where possible. White PCB on Motherboard is a big plus. White or Pink and/or addressable LEDs on cables, fans, etc are also a huge bonus where possible.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
- I can obtain my own copy of Windows, but would appreciate recommendations for version
Extra info or particulars:
- I am going to be building this computer myself with help from a much more tech savvy friend. The last PC I built was over a decade ago, so I am operating on ancient and mostly forgotten information, but am happy to leverage Youtube University for that side of things. Any additional info regarding tips, tricks, things I should look up or may be forgetting to consider would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your time and assistance!

2024.03.17 07:58 _dnger Doing a (almost) complete refresh of my old build, not sure if I should reuse case or go ITX
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
- I'll mostly be using this for gaming. I don't currently play a lot of performance-demanding games, but I'd like the PC to be able to handle pretty much anything. I would hope it would be good for multitasking as well, as I may do some work on it with VSCode and other programs.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
- General budget for new parts is around $800, but I am willing to be flexible with that and go a little higher (no higher than 900).
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
- I'm not building until late this year, maybe mid-October. I know Ryzen 9000 is rumored to be coming out soon, but a build with current available parts will still be helpful.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
- For this build, I only need tower recommendations.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
- I will be purchasing my parts in Oregon, US (no tax! :D). I do not have access to a MicroCenter nearby :/
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
- I will be putting in my EVGA 3070 Ti FTW3 GPU, as well as my EVGA 750GM SFX PSU. I do also have a Lian Li O11D Mini Snow Edition that I am considering using if I do a normal-sized tower build (I am heavily considering ITX).
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
- Probably nothing beyond XMP
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
- I'd like a good SSD + an okay HDD. I'm not too caught up with storage stuff so if 2TB is reasonably cheap for an SSD that's great (and 4TB+ for HDD).
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
- I don't think that I will need WiFi for this, so I should only need Wired.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
- I'm heavily considering an ITX build. If I do, I would want to do it in the Fractal Terra Jade case. If not, then I would just reuse my O11D Mini. I know it's a lot to ask, but providing two builds would be very helpful for me so that I could weigh my options. For the O11D Mini build, white components are preferred. For the ITX one, any color is fine with no RGB.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Extra info or particulars: Thank you so much for taking the time to help me! I feel like I've covered everything, but if you need any clarifying info please comment and I'll respond pretty quickly.

2024.03.04 04:51 kelanikoder Need help before I buy a PC for gaming. Intel Core i7 OR AMD 7700x.
Hi!! I built a PC around 7 years ago and ended up selling my pc for a MacBook Pro. I have a ps5 but miss PC gaming, so I wanna build a PC. I was gonna do a pre built but I feel like for the time and patience, I could build a faster, better pc with better parts and components. I mainly want it for the Sims 4, Fortnite and possibly Hogwarts Legacy and some Star Wars games. I do edit and make videos for tiktok and YouTube, but I plan to have a separate Mac mini for that, so I wouldn't be multi tasking besides maybe streaming to tiktok. My friends are recommending that I go to the micro center near by my house and get the AMD 7700X bundle and save my money. Here's my build:

2024.03.04 02:10 Joth91 I'm very lost trying to update from Clover 10.12 to OpenCore 12.6, following the Dortania guide. Need answers to a few basic questions as I am quite out of my depth.
Specs:
cpu: Intel i7-6700 3.4Ghz (Gen 6) Skylake
gpu: Intel HD 530
mobo: ASUS Maximus VIII Gene
ram: 2x8gb Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4 2400mhz
audio: 100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller
wifi: Atheros AR93xx Wireless Network Adapter
ethernet: Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V (included w/ motherboard)

Okay my brain just isn't comprehending what needs to be done and the more I read the dumber I feel. I barely got my Hackintosh running the first time and I can see I'm barely intelligent enough to know what the Dortania guide is talking about half the time. I'm sorry to be a bother, I just don't know where I stand or what I should do.
What I've done so far:
No alterations to the OS, just preparations. I've updated my BIOS/UEFI and changed the settings so it would boot up. I also mapped my USB Ports and created a USB.kext/USBLegacyMap.kext. I am guessing I only need the newer one but I made legacy to be safe.
Questions:
- Even if I'm switching from Clover to OpenCore, do I need to make a USB installer if I'm only updating? It says it's better to start from a fresh install. My main goal is to keep my audio plugins from having to reauthenticate because I have like 90 of them, my understanding is that I can do this if I keep the Serial Number and Board-ID from my current installation.
- It describes removal of several files from the EFI in the "Clover Conversion" section of the Dortania guide under "extras". Do I do that after installing OpenCore, make a copy of the Clover EFI and do it to that then mount that EFI, or do it before installing opencore? Or do I download OpenCore-0.9.8-Release and just overwrite the mounted EFI and then look again and maybe there are leftovers from Clover?
- Is the OpenCore-Legacy Patcher related to any of this? Idk I just found it somewhere and it's also by Dortania and it looks a lot like the Clover-Configurator which I'm more familiar with.
- Is TimeMachine a useful tool to back things up as a safeguard or does is it not able to store things at the kext-level?
Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

2024.03.02 05:42 Joth91 Please help review my plans to upgrade my current Hackintosh Clover 10.13 High Sierra to OpenCore 12.6 Monterey.
cpu: Intel i7-6700 3.4Ghz (Gen 6) Skylake
gpu: Intel HD 530
mobo: ASUS Maximus VIII Gene
ram: 2x8gb Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4 2400mhz
audio: 100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller
wifi: Atheros AR93xx Wireless Network Adapter
ethernet: Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V (included w/ motherboard)

I set up my working Hackintosh about 6 years ago, I barely got it working and it was demoralizing and very frustrating using Clover. I've skimmed the Dortania guide but haven't read it to the letter but am hoping to use OpenCore now.
According to the Dortania guide, my limitation here is my cpu internal graphics
Intel HD 530, capping me at upgrading to Monterey 12.6.x, however this sub labels
Intel HD P530 as usable up to current OS if I'm understanding. Not sure if the P530 is majorly different from the regular 530. I also understand I may need to use ethernet as Atheros cards are not supported past High Sierra.
I plan on using Dortania's Clover to OpenCore migration guide.
A few questions:
- Any red flags or things I didn't consider?
- Hoping to upgrade without overwriting or wiping any data as I have many audio plugins that require authentication on reinstall, which would be inconvenient. Will my planned method avoid this?
- I've heard OpenCore is much more convenient, is it really worth it to migrate from Clover to OpenCore in my case if I won't be able to upgrade much more with current specs?
