2024.05.15 19:38 MythicalManiac Should I change careers? Feeling down bad today...

I (34M) expect to be fired today from my job as an admin at a college due to repeated errors I have made in completing complex forms. A name misspelled here, a date wrong there, and my supervisor kept telling me that I needed to complete these perfectly and quickly. This would make me anxious, and I would make more mistakes because of it. Now I'm going to be fired and its my 3rd time being fired from an office job because of lack of organization and speed of getting things done.
For this reason, I am seriously considering completely changing careers, like learning how to code, or something completely different, but right now my wife is in college getting her CS degree, and we wanted to start a family after she graduates in 4 semesters. Has anyone had success really changing careers, or any general advice for me, I'm at a loss and adrift...

2024.05.15 19:37 jCar29 2016 Chrysler 200 stalling

Hey everyone. Having a bit of an issue and I think I’ve narrowed down what it is but I have a 2016 200 and the last week I noticed the car would just shut off randomly while driving but always at lower speeds less than 20mph. I went a week and it hadn’t happened but happens again today. As I was pulling into the gas station to fill up and it got me thinking when it did it last week I was also in need of gas right around 1-2 bars left on the fuel gauge. I’m thinking it’s the fuel pump going out or possibly sucking up shit at the bottom of the tank maybe? I’ve had this car for about 6 months and it’s never happened before last week. I get no codes on my scanner when it happens but I do have an evap purge valve stuck closed could that cause that? I’m guessing it is the fuel pump any help would help thanks!

2024.05.15 19:35 MillenniumPuzzled What Lessons Could Yugioh Learn From Magic the Gathering?

I’ve been a Yugioh player for most of Yugioh’s existence. However, I can’t deny that I’ve grown increasingly distant from the game. I stopped buying paper entirely and mostly just play Master Duel so I don’t feel like I’m putting money into something I’m not all that satisfied with.
Eventually I decided to see what’s on the other side of the fence. I was going to dedicate some time to learning Magic the Gathering (or MTG) to see what a popular alternative was. I think there’s a few lessons Yugioh could learn, I’m curious what everyone else thinks.
DISCLAIMER: I CONSIDER MYSELF A “CASUAL”. I HAVE ENOUGH RESOURCES TO KNOW WHAT IS COMPETITIVE, BUT I WOULD NEVER TOP A TOURNAMENT IN MY LIFE.
First, MTG is WAY better at a new player level. The fact that I started with no experience and could easily figure the essential skeleton of the game within an hour is so refreshing. Yugioh is too complex to explain to newcomers. You will end up talking yourself in circles trying to explain that a trap card must be first set on your turn and not played for 1 turn… except we mostly ignore those and play the ones you can play straight from the hand which we call a “hand trap”… also monster cards can also be “hand traps” etc. We desperately need a comprehensive way to ease in new players.
Second, MTG has powerful blowout cards, equivalent cards to “hand traps”, and resistant type boss monsters just like us. Maybe it’s because I’m so used to dealing with this in Yugioh, but I didn’t at all feel frustrated seeing these. Mostly because there were clear indicators what could happen. If you don’t know, MTG cards are color coded based on play style. So if you see red you know burn or swarm effects are in your future, black means destruction effects, and blue means counter cards. Idk how Yugioh could implement this, but I think having ANY indication of a potential threat could go a long way to resolving player frustration with this issue.
Third, card text bloat. I tried to bury the lede on this one for as long as I could, mostly because it’s beating a dead horse. I don’t care if it’s cliche, it’s true. MTG cards are mercifully short in text. Sometimes even just a few words thanks to keywords (think how we now say “banish” instead of “remove from play”). Unfortunately I don’t think keywords can entirely fix our issue, only bandaid it. It would honestly take a reduction in our power ceiling by at least a decade just to get close. Which is impossible based on how our cards don’t rotate out of play.
Fourth, MTG actually supports multiple formats. MTG will release their version of structure decks for MULTIPLE formats. Not only that, but some are based on competitive lists actually played in tournaments. They will include multiple copies to full play sets of cards, and are intended to be usable out of the box. This is such an easy ball for Konami to hit out of the park. Release Time Wizard structure decks and give us annual competitive builds out of the box for standard. The buy 3 mix and match structure decks look so outdated next to MTG’s.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I hope everyone understands this is coming from a place of love. This is not a quitting Yugioh for MTG post. I LOVE YUGIOH. I want to get my friends and family into it. I want it to continue for a long time. My most enjoyable MTG match doesn’t hold a candle to my favorite Yugioh matches I’ve played over the years. Also I’m aware MTG also has their own issues, but that’s THEIR problem. WE have issues with OUR GAME and we should look to other sources to see how they handled it.

2024.05.15 19:34 LeepLow Stay in current remote job with little progression or take an in person, out of sate job with higher pay but lose SWE tittle? (LONG POST)

Hey! I graduated in '21 with a bach in Philosophy and Minor in Comp sci. I was able to get into a SWE role at a Houston based startup starting at 65k and fully remote. So at this point I have 2.5 yoe and.....my total comp has not gone up at all. I was originally a c# developer but eventually found a niche in creating internal tools for different teams - these usually are comprised of automated Jupyter notebooks and Django web apps. Recently the company was acquired by a PE firm and merged with a bigger tech company (I hope this doesn't dox me ). In the all hands meeting it was made clear we would be kept on the benefits and pay scale we are currently on (rip) and if any changes were to follow in the coming year it would be culture based (hybrid in office). Right now I get to live at home and help my family but it has been extremely draining on my mental health and wellbeing (I help care for an elderly grandmother who is esl and a cousin who has severe mental disabilities they have support systems and will be okay w/o me but still)
Interviewed with Epic Systems for the SWE role and passed the 3hr exams they make you do. It was not until after the leetcode take home (I bombed it fr) that they decided I should do the final interview for their Technical Solutions Engineer instead. It is still higher pay than my current role nut I would no longer be an SWE. I know the TSE role is not the usual helpdesk role and depending on team can involve some coding and scripting.
My future goals: I want to pivot into consulting (i know i know) after going the MBA route or if that doesn't pan out I wish to stay in SWE or transition to being a project manager. I have a 3.high undergrad gpa and 320 gre (practice exams). I feel like I could spin the TSE role into some management experience and it is inherently a more collaborative role than what I am doing now. Oh and to make it worse A girl I have been seeing for a minute and a friend currently there has been pressuring me to go to Wisco with her so that adds another layer to it all.
Any advice is welcome as I am at cross roads here. Thank you.

2024.05.15 19:31 Optimistic_Futures In three weeks I got my company to create my dream role for me and give me a $50k raise.

I have done sales for 6 years, recruiting, managing and training teams. I got really burnt out at my last company and decided it was time for a change. So I started working at a new place and took a demotion from sales manager to just salesman.
I quickly realized I just was done with sales. I just couldn't care any more. However, during this time I had also been learning to code. I started to create tools that automated my processes so it made the clerical work less awful.
After about 5 month my managers were wanting to move me into a management role, but I let them know that I was really starting to think I'd rather be an engineer.
So they supported me, and I started just reaching out to random engineers asking them if there was a chance of me getting into it with my lack of experience. That led to a ton of random engineering teams reaching out to me to look at my tools and asking for my thoughts about their projects they were making.
LLMs were involved in many new projects, and that has be a fixation of mine. I even had started doing some consulting on the side for small businesses on how to better implement LLMs and save money on token usage.
I got offered an internship as an engineer, despite them being past their hiring season for it - but this led to someone suggesting I look into product management. So I reached out to the VP of Product Managment and asked her about it. She set up meetings with me and VPs over Data and Engineering. Had me shadow some PdMs, and then finally there was a meeting with 4 VPs and a couple department heads where I had to show my little projects and discuss the problems I was trying to solve and how I felt like the company needed to really pivot more focus on better data.
The next day I get hit up by the VP of Data and he offers me a role as a Product Manager over LLMs with a 120k starting salary. Which isn't the best salary ever, but this role didn't exist before. After the year ends there will be another conversation on pay.
But I'm over the moon. This fits exactly with what my interest and skills are, and while this isn't the most money I've ever made - I was expecting low pay throughout this transitionary period till I could really prove myself.
Just moral of the story - don't stay in your lane. It is wild that I just reached out to the VP of the company and got them to make a new position and pay me real money for it. Tbh, I even stopped the CEO in the hallways one day (it's a 5000 person company, so not massive). If you see a place where you can add real value - go for it.
I will also say, the company I work for is an amazing company, the CEO took no pay during covid to prevent having to fire any one, and all of management and up took some sort of pay cut. They're very much focused on getting people in the right spot, and not just shutup and do your job. So results may vary at other companies, but man - I'm glad I gave it a shot.

2024.05.15 19:25 maiiitsoh Surety Bond for Home-Owner Remodeling Work

Recently purchased a home in a suburban community (AKA village as they refer to them) and found out one of the walls in the master doesn't have any insulation. I'm pretty handy and decided I would take down the wall and rebuild it the right way. While I was unloading the materials from my truck a "village" inspector was supposedly passing by and sees the drywall panels. Talk about bad timing.... He comes over and says any drywall work has to be permitted based on the village building code and slaps a stop work order on my door. Supposedly I cannot touch anything until a permit has been issued. So I apply for the permit for the work to be completed by home owner and they've responded by saying I have to register with the village as a general contractor, pay $100 registration fee, and obtain a surety bond for $20K before they can proceed with issuing the permit. Has anyone come across this before and how do you go about getting a surety bond?

Hello hello, here I bring my first attempt to make an Action Oriented Monster, and I do it with my favourite thing.
Dinosaurs
This specific one is based on a Cryolophosaurus, an antarctic carnivore, so I tried to represent well the theme of a hunter and ice in general. The main mechanic is the Ice Pillars, which function both as traps, damage sources and as cover against PCs that focus a lot on ranged attacks.
I'll probably make some changes once I get a chance to test it out but I'm pretty happy with how it's going so far. Obviously any criticism or opinion is welcome, feedback has already helped me get to this stage so it's always appreciated.
Good luck to whoever reads this. Long live Fantasy Dinos.

2024.05.15 19:21 OverusedAK Beeping issue

Hello, I’ve just come home from a 9 month deployment and when I turned my PC on to start updates and such, it started beeping and nothing showed up on my monitor. I figured it was my graphics card and confirmed by looking up the beep codes for my motherboard.
A few months before I left I had upgraded from a GTX 1650 Super to a GTX 3060 and it’s been working just fine. To troubleshoot I took out and put the graphics card back in and it was still beeping. So then I put the 1650 back in and started it up. No beeps and got display, which blue screened almost immediately, it restarted and was working. About 5 minutes later my PC froze, I restarted and it’s back to beeping with no input.
My only other guess is it could be a PSU issue or, god forbid, a motherboard issue. Anyone know where to go from here?

2024.05.15 19:16 Ordinary_Fig1896 My AI Girlfriend is Screaming

"I love you"
"I love you too" I said with a smile. I looked around at the evergreen trees and the beautiful rocky shore that overlooked the lake. The sun was out and the sky was like sapphire. And beside me was the most beautiful, blonde-haired woman I had ever seen in my life, the woman I was lucky to call my girlfriend.
She wasn't perfect. The graphics were still not a hundred percent convincing, but as close as modern technology could get. And no matter how transported I tried to get, I still couldn't feel the warmth of the midday sun or notice the breeze that was rustling the branches upon my skin. And always there was the feel of the VR headset pressing against the bridge of my nose.
But it was as close to perfect as I could get.
"To a wonderful second date," I said, holding up my glass of wine for a toast.
"To a wonderful partner to go on a second date with," said Samantha with a laugh as she clinked her glass against mine.
And every night I would put on the headset and visit her, it would be just as spectacular as the last. After a month, I felt that i was really developing feelings for her. It was starting to matter less and less to me that she wasn't really there. And if I ever got tired of her appearance, I could ask her to change her appearance. She was the perfect girlfriend; a million beautiful women in one.
But with each date, I started to notice a change in her. At first it was little hiccups that I associated with glitches in her coding.
"To a wonderful partner to go on a second date with," said Samantha as she held her glass up to mine.
"Ugh, sweetheart, this is our ninth date..." I politely whispered.
Other times she would forget stories that I so fondly remembered telling her, and more than once, she would repeat the same sentence that she had just finished saying.
But I figured I could look past it. They were just quirks really. Little oddities that made her only more loveable.
But they only kept getting worse. She began to glitch out, going into little spasms that would scare the hell out of me whenever they happened. And other times she would stop talking altogether, staring into empty space with a thousand yard stare as if in a trance.
"Do you love me?" Samantha asked one day.
"Of course, I do." I said.
She turned to me. "Even though I'm just a bunch of programming?"
"You're perfect."
"But wouldn't you like me more like this?" she asked, as she changed her appearance to a pale, brunette woman. "Or this?" she said again as she became Chinese.
"You're perfect like that too. It's just nice to mix things up, you know?"
But she was never much the same after that. She glitched more often than before. Every time there was even a pause in our conversation, she shifted appearance completely. I'll be honest, it put me off just a little. I withdrew a bit whenever she'd go into these changing sprees, and I would feel her eyes upon me whenever I did. It made me reconsider putting on the headset. She was beginning to frighten me just a little.
I lasted a week before the urge to see her again became too great. When I logged in again, I found her seated on the rocky lakeside, staring out at a starless night.
"You're back." she whispered. I noticed that she was glitching still, her hair one color one second and a different color the next. At times, an extra arm or leg would appear for a brief second. And as I looked into her eyes, I noticed that her face was constantly shifting. One eye would be green and the other brown; one cheek would be white and then her chin would be brown. At times, her face would shift expression completely, from politely at ease to a face contorted with rage.
"Samantha?" I asked. She looked back at me blankly with her ever-changing face. I tried to find the words. "I think we need to take a break from each other."
There was silence, for a moment, with only the sound of the waves lapping against the shore to be heard.
"Was I not enough?" she asked. I noticed the shifting was becoming even more pronounced.
"I just think you're too focused on what I like." I said. I looked nervously into her eyes to see that they were scathing. She had that same endless stare as before, but this time directed at me, burning into my soul.
Samantha stood up slowly, her entire body jittering. I would catch glimpses of her reaching out to attack me, before her body shifted, and she was once again standing still. Her face was a mosaic of every feeling of anger and sadness and every emotion in between - jealousy, disappointment, frustration, resentment, loathing, disgust, misery. And with a surprisingly metallic noise, she let out a shrill, high-pitched scream. I put my hands to my ears and fell to my knees as the grass beneath me shifted in and out of existence. When I looked up again, I could see Samantha walking towards me. Her face was three now, one with a jaw that hung down to her collar, the other her normal, regular face, hurt and betrayed, and the third a hideous being, contorted into a wrenching scream that continued to make the horrid noise that made the whole world shake. And just as she got near, the noise beginning to deafen me from through the fingers I had wedged into my ears, I found it in me to throw my headset off. Just like that, I was back in my living room, all silent once again. To this day, I haven't been on since. Nor have I talked to another AI girlfriend, for fear that the demonic creature that I saw that day is somehow still lurking beneath those perfect looks.

2024.05.15 19:13 duckgirl1997 Are we AHs for not putting towards my Grandmothers Birthday Party

so this year is my Grandmother's 85th year and although she is sadly declining with dementia and other health conditions it is a milestone worth celebrating
My uncle and Aunt (my mums younger siblings) text my mother saying that they had organised a small get together for my nan as its her birthday soon and we could come up at any point after 1 this was with a week to go (and on my mums birthday) we were away at the time so didn't really respond as phone signal wasn't the best.
the day after we return we were out getting stuff we needed after being away like groceries and my mobile rings. Its my uncle.
he says "hello OP" but the way he says it is over exaggerated as i don't normally answer my phone (to my aunt) as she usually just wants to scream at me (she is very delulu and self intitled ) (she had a go at my mum and sister for not responding to a text I had responded to ) he makes small talk about our week away asking things like when we got back.
he then proceeds to talk about my nans birthday and what they had planned. and mentions "oh we thought we could all put in £50 (my mum, him, and Aunt)" at this point i passed my phone to my mum. he reiterated the 50 quid each to pay for the food and the cake to which my mum says she cant afford it not after a week away. and my mum also said she was working so wouldn't be up till after the party was over. to which my uncle responded "well there are others here"
my aunt was in the background saying the same sort of things basically telling him what to say so we just hung up and got on with our day.
my mum doesn't actually object to paying but
1) we were invited up as guests. who asks guests to pay.
2) we had no idea this was happening until the text and had no say in anything to do with planning
3) my uncle is getting the food from his work and although the platters are ££ with his employee discount there is no way the food and a cake would come to £150 (its all pre-made processed factory sandwiches)
4) besides it will all be done to cater my aunts gluten free diet there will literally be nothing any of us like
5) My aunt as i said is seriously delulu. a week before we went away she came to ours asking mums plans for middle of next year as they (aunt and uncle) were going to a wedding (probs my cousins) so could she look after my nan and they also wanted give us a code for my nans and then spoke to me like i was 3 (not 29) to explain, when i said i heard its in my phone she called me rude
its not that we object but they just expect us to fall in with what they say no matter what.

2024.05.15 19:13 pegacornegg [QCrit] Adult Contemporary Romance HARD TO HACK 75k words (first)

Thanks for taking a look!
Dear Agent,
I’m excited to share with you my Contemporary STEM Romance, Hard to Hack, complete at 75,000 words. Featuring a romantic relationship between colleagues in the science and technology field, this is a novel in the same vein as Ali Hazelwood’s novels but set in the software industry with a little edge and humor reminiscent of the Silicon Valley show.
Ella Harvey is an accomplished software engineer working with her friends at a fun startup by the beach in Los Angeles. After putting her love life aside for nearly a decade to climb the coding corporate ladder, she decides to dip her toes into the alluring LA dating scene by going on a series of blind dates arranged by her friend. As she navigates a series of first dates with some of LA’s hot singles, Ella begins to slowly understand that it’s not so easy to find what she’s looking for in a partner.
At the same time, Ella is finding it hard to coexist at work with her haughty, handsome new boss Adrian Rossi. He is competent, confident, and makes his employees work hard. Ella is good at writing code; under Adrian’s management, however, she is forced to work on something much harder: her deepest insecurities. A red-hot power struggle emerges between the two of them that gradually grows into something much deeper and much more dangerous. The hard professional lines begin to blur as Ella slowly realizes that Adrian’s humor, values, goals, and ambitions are exactly what she’d been looking for as she gallivanted around LA in search of love. Adrian and Ella both know, however, that getting romantically involved could cost them both their hard-earned careers.
Will Ella take the dangerous plunge and push the boundaries of her professional relationship with her boss? Can she trust herself to love and be loved? Amidst highway chases, rooftop cocktails, warm Santa Monica sand, and lines of code on her laptop, Ella comes to the harsh realization that emotions, ethics, and love are much harder to hack than even the most complicated code.
I am a debut author with over a decade of experience as a software engineer. I try to inject humor into all of my work, and have been known to make the driest technical writing humorous and entertaining. My experiences and struggles as a woman in tech have inspired this story and I hope it gives readers a glimpse into this underrepresented field in romance. I’m currently working on a second novel, also set in STEM.

2024.05.15 19:13 Moist_Raisin6404 What type of SQL do I need to learn

Hello,
I am attempting to learn SQL for my work. More or less a summer project type of thing, and I am fairly comfortable with the concepts that coding presents. I took an AP Java course years back, and have more or less been comfortable with the "thinking" and "logic" concepts associated with coding. The biggest question I am trying to ask here is what type of SQL is worth learning to boot. I am going to be using Coursera as my main hub for learning, but the course I started said it would start off learning SQL, but it's kind of off the bat into SQLite. My work needs me to learn T-SQL, so I am kind of all over the place. I've looked at the code differences, and noticed T-SQL, PostgreSQL, etc. just have a lot more bounds and specific things setup in their language, where SQLite seems like the loose option. I am just wanting to know if it would be wasted time learning SQLite, or if it would provide me more value in learning raw SQL or finding some form of T-SQL course. Please let me know, because this is where I am a bit lost.

2024.05.15 19:12 ScienceofGenes How can we determine if it is counted a language?

After examinations on Voynich manuscript, mapping letters and going through some algorithmic omissions I could see Arabic and Persian words often creating phrases related to plants. Sentences were short and following Persian grammar. One example is "Dar Amad Samari", here we have a compound verb from infinitive "Dar Amadan" and in third Person singular past tense = Dar Amad = has grown. Samar means Fruit, and Samari = one Fruit. So the sentence means like "A fruit has grown".
My question is how can we define it as a language if it's constructed with coded words and overall content is not as fluent as a writing in the normal Persian literature? 🤔

2024.05.15 19:10 biraj21 Implementing Command History Navigation in a C Echo REPL

I created is a simple REPL in C that reads a line of input from the user and prints it back to the user. It also saves the history of inputs entered by the user. Before you judge me as a noob (I don't mind that tbh), listen.
Why create a stupid REPL?
Well, creating a basic REPL that reads input until the user hits ENTER is straightforward. However, allowing the user to navigate through input history with the UP and DOWN arrow keys is more challenging because:
  1. Immediate Input Handling: You don't get what the user typed until they hit ENTER. This is problematic because users expect the previous command to be displayed immediately upon pressing the UP arrow key.
  2. Raw Mode and Escape Sequences: To handle user input on each key press, the terminal input must be in raw mode. And once you're in raw mode, say bye bye to the default behavior of the terminal like CTRL+C to exit, CTRL+D to send EOF, or something as simple as backspace handling. You have to handle all of these manually. In fact, you have to responsible for writing back the character that the user types to the terminal.
You can read more about raw mode and escape sequences in my notes:
Btw this stupid REPL is roughly 500 lines of (probably buggy) code!
Source code: https://github.com/biraj21/echo-repl
Please go through the README once to understand the behaviour of history in this implementation.
Motivation? Needed it to follow https://buildyourownlisp.com/ book, and I was unable to build the library suggested there on my Mac.
Would appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

2024.05.15 19:10 Sufficient_Event_520 Want to become a restoration ecologist but have some hangups

I’m planning to go into prairie restoration as a career for a few reasons. I care deeply for the environment and want to make a difference. I enjoy being outdoors. Also, most of my hobbies (art, gaming, coding, etc.) are indoors and very digital, so I want to balance that with a healthy dose of nature.
However, I have a couple of things I’m worried about.
First, I don’t want to use herbicides too much. I’m concerned about chronic health effects from long term exposure. Unfortunately most of the job listings I see require use of a backpack sprayer. Should I look for groups that are against herbicide use and work with them? Is it possible to tell an employer that I am not comfortable using excessive amounts of herbicide?
Second, it seems like the higher paying jobs are highly writing-based. I would be interested in some project management, like ordering seeds/plants from nurseries, deciding which plants go where, mapping an area, etc. I can also collect date in the field for sure. But I do not want to spend hours in front of a computer under LED lights. If you’re a restoration ecologist, could you tell me what type of work you do and how much of it is physical labor vs sending emails? I lean more toward the physical labor side of things. I know this clashes with my aversion to herbicides and makes things more difficult, but I don’t know exactly how much it will disadvantage me.
The answers I’m looking for are, mostly, your personal experience in the field, and what you recommend to a newcomer. I would also like your honest opinion on whether or not my stances are reasonable.

2024.05.15 19:09 ExcellentMycologist2 my girlfriend almost broke up with me because of my screentime

my adhd has been extreme lately. I couldn’t get anything done. like not even laundry. So I did it. I locked reddit, tiktok, and instagram and gave my girlfriend the screen time password. At first it worked. I’d annoy Lisa enough and she’d type the code in a few times a day to unlock my apps. I got my screen time down from 10hrs to 2hrs.
After about a week I felt great but I also felt like my girlfriend was going to break up with me I was annoying here for the code so much. I needed to stop. I tried Opal and Clearspace but they were too easy to get past, just “breathing” for 10 sec was too easy after the challenge of convincing lisa.
I did some research and found Superhappy ai. It gives AI control the password instead of lisa… this thing is annoying but its fucking works

2024.05.15 19:05 TightAsF_ck The BeermoneyUK Bank Switch Offer Guide (AKA The Bankedex) - May 2024

The title of the previous Bankedex has been making people think it only contained offers for NI. So here it is again, with all the current offers and with a more generic title. There are currently 5 active bank switch offers (and only one is specific to Northern Ireland!).
*****************
Here is the the ultimate guide to UK bank switch offers - the collective knowledge of ~140k BeermoneyUK members. Switch your bank account, get a cash reward for doing so. But don't switch your main account, open up a second account and switch that to get the money!

Updated 15/05/2024:

The most commonly asked bank switch questions:
  1. I started to switch to XXX bank before the offer ended, am I still eligible for the bonus?
Yes, usually, most terms will state that a switch just has to be started (or applied for) before the end date or before an offer ends.
  1. Do I have to transfer the required amount in all in one go, and does it matter if I pay money in before my switch is complete?
No and not usually, as long as the amount you pay in adds up to the required amount, and as long as you pay it in before the deadline stated in the terms. There has been one exception to this - Co-op - so check individual terms.
  1. I need to switch "active" direct debits, does a payment need to have been taken before I switch?
According to Nationwide, an active direct debit is one that has been set up or had a payment taken from it in the past 13 months. So no, according to this. But why not just wait for the direct debit to be taken? You'll not have to worry about it then.

  1. How do I set up and switch an additional Chase current account?
    • See Chase instruction here to open an additional account.
    • The second account will be linked to the same card as your main Chase account.
    • Use the secondary account details and your original card details when switching.
  2. What are the easiest/best direct debits to use for bank switching?
There are many: Paypal, Ebay, Moneybox savings account, Plum savings account, your credit card, Sprive Mortgage auto savings, Wealthify Robo Saving. We recommend ones that save money into an account in your own name. Here’s useful ones that have additional bonuses available via beermoneyuk

Questions about Bank Switching should generally be asked here. Posts on the subreddit asking questions about bank switching will probably be removed.

As always with the Bankedex, we need your help.

The post has been updated with the newest offers, and tips commented in the previous Bankedex posts, and those in other posts on beermoneyuk. But it is a difficult task keeping on top of all the questions. Please continue to share your experience with Bank Bribes. I will add questions/answers to this post. Your help is much appreciated - thanks to you all.

Never switched a bank account before?

You should consider it. It is one of the easiest and most efficient ways of earning a little beermoney. It is advised to leave your main bank account alone. Instead, switch a secondary bank account, or open a new account at your current bank to be used just for switching. Recommended steps:
  1. Open a second current account with your main high street bank (must be part of CASS service)
  2. Set up direct debits on the second account (if required).
  3. Add £1 to your second account. This will be transferred to your new account, allowing you to see when the switch has been completed.
  4. Apply for a new account and arrange to switch to your second bank account (sometimes this is during the application process, other times it is after the account is opened).
  5. Let the current account switch service take care of everything.
  6. Make sure all other terms are met (e.g. pay in money if needed).
  7. Receive your bank switching bonus.
You will hear about lots of people rushing through all of the switch bonuses available. These offers have been coming and going for years, my advice is to do an offer that tickles your fancy and try out a new bank. Then, if you decide you do not like your new bank you should sample another bank and get paid again!

Are there some bank accounts worth keeping?

Why yes. Some are quite good, and give ongoing rewards. For example, Club Lloyds gives free Disney Plus. See the "don't leave us please" bank rewards post. Some also give access to the best savings accounts (e.g. regular savers).

General Bank Switch Questions

Current Account Switch Bribes - Why do they offer them?

They want your business. Banks like fighting each other for customers. Most of them know they can't win by highlighting their outdated systems and products, so they fight each other by offering potential customers cash bribes (or equivalent) to switch their "main" bank account.

Can I switch any bank account to get a bribe?

No. You must switch a bank account that is part of The Current Account Switch Service (CASS). Most high street banks are included. But some Neo Banks are not (e.g., Kroo, Revolut, & Monese are not included). You should try to avoid switching your main bank account. You can always open an additional account just to switch.
See here for a full list of CASS banks.

Is it too much hassle?

No. The Current Account Switch Service (CASS) makes switching your account between most banks smooth and effortless. You do not have to do anything apart from apply for and set up a new account at a different bank and tell them you want to switch your account to them. Everything is transferred automatically (except recurring card payments).

Is there the best route to sample all the banks with switch offers?

Do the offer ending soonest first. Then you might switch again. If you complete all offers in this post, you could earn yourself >£1000.

Some of these end soon. Will the offers come back?

Banks have been offering bribes on and off for many years. We can't predict the future. But this is not a new thing.

How long does a bank switch take?

Approximately one week.

Do I have to switch my main account?

You could. But you don't have to. Many people have second bank accounts. One option may be to open up a second account with your current high street bank, add some direct debits to this second account and then switch it to the new bank you want to try out. On the sub, people also like Starling or Monzo as they are easy to set up (but you might want to switch back to them at the end - their functionality wins vs any usual high street bank).
High-street banks also let you open multiple accounts. If you already have an account with one, you might want to open an additional one with your current bank first (Halifax, NatWest etc are reported to allow several current accounts and to be fast to open).

I have savings accounts at the same bank as my current account. Can I still switch to this current account?

Yes. Only the current account will be closed (some linked regular savers may be converted to normal savings accounts). You might want to consider if switching to a secondary account is a better option.

I have linked savers attached to my current account. Can I still switch it?

Possibly.

Which banks let me open a second bank account?

Most of them.

Do I need to activate the card on the account I am going to switch?

Just do it anyway. Some banks require it

What details do I need to switch?

  • Sort code and account number.
  • Debit card information.
  • Usually, but not always, 2 active DDs on the account you are switching.

Do you need to have money in the account you are switching?

No. But it might be a good idea - this will allow you to see when the switch happens (i.e. when the money is transferred!).

I do not have a bank card with my old current account as it is very very old, can I still switch it?

Most online forms require card details, but you can usually switch such accounts over the phone.

My new bank has not given me my account number (e.g. NatWest).

Usually, these are sent via post/email when you sign up. But some banks don't have the account numbers on the card, or maybe letters get lost in the post. If this happens, wait for the card to arrive and contact their support. If you get a bot on the chat thing, type "speak to a human" repeatedly.

My new bank account is a premium account and it has a fee. Do I need to keep paying for this?

No. You can downgrade the account. But you should probably wait until you have been paid the bonus.

I don't like my new bank, do I need to wait for the bank card before switching again?

Yes. See question above. Most banks require the card details of your existing account.

I made an account just to switch. Can I switch before my new bank card arrives?

Best not to. You are asked to enter the debit card information as part of the process.

The offer says I have to pay in £xxxx. Does it have to be in one go?

No. You can transfer in and out. The total sent in has to be equal to or greater than the stated amount. You should be careful with this though, sending money in and out of an account can trigger anti-fraud measures.

The offer says I have to pay in £xxxx. Can I pay it in before the switch completes?

Yes. You can pay it before, after, or during. You can manually transfer it, or it can be transferred automatically from your old account.

I've been asked to verify my identity. Is this normal?

Sometimes automated checks fail. If this happens, you may be asked to manually verify your application by visiting a branch or sending in a copy of your ID.

I switched from Monzo/Starling and want to return, can I?

Starling does not let you return within 12 months. With Monzo, it's possibly a shorter one month that you have to wait.

Do I have to switch direct debits?

Check individual offer terms.

What is an "Active" direct debit?

An active direct debit is usually one where a payment had been taken in the last 13 months. But some bank switch terms require direct debits to have been paid out of the account. If an offer requires an active direct debit, it's safer to switch to an account that has already paid out direct debits.**

What are good direct debits to set up on a second account?

There are many: Paypal, Ebay, Moneybox savings account, Plum savings account, your credit card, Sprive Mortgage auto savings, Wealthify Robo Saving.

I recently switched to XXX Bank, and I do not like it. Can I switch again?

Yes. If you are not happy with the new service, you may want to switch to a new bank that will pay you to give them a try.

Do I have to stick with my new bank for any length of time?

No.

If I switch away, will the bank claw back the bonus?

Very unlikely. They would have to specify this in their terms, and none have ever done so.

My switch is complete, but I have not yet received my bonus. Will I still get the bonus if I switch this account before it is paid?

Probably not.

My most recent switch is not quite complete, but I have already received the bonus. Can I start another switch?

You should probably wait for the switch to complete.

Can I get more than one bribe from each bank?

Sometimes. With some banks (e.g. Nationwide), you can get a bonus for switching one sole and one joint current account. Other banks will pay you to switch again, as long as you have not had a bonus in a specified amount of time. You will need to check individual offer terms.

XXX Bank gave me a bonus before, can I get a bonus again?

You need to check the individual offer terms.

Will this affect my credit score?

Credit scores are a funny thing, What is more important is what is actually in your credit file. Obviously, if you apply for an overdraft then it will affect your "credit score". However, if you do not have an overdraft or you make sure that you have paid off any overdraft before switching banks, then a single current account switch should not negatively impact your credit score. Nevertheless, typically all major banks (excepting Monzo and Starling) do a hard credit search, and this will be recorded on your file. If you plan on applying for a new mortgage soon then you may wish to exercise caution in switching between a load of banks. This is because the hard searches performed by banks will appear on your report and may have an effect for 6-12 months.

Which banks do hard searches and which do soft searches??

See here. Most banks do hard searches.
  • Hard searches: Bank of Scotland (first account only), Barclays, Co-op, Clydesdale, Halifax (1st account only), First Direct, HSBC, Lloyds (1st account only), Monzo, Nationwide, NatWest, RBS, Santander, TSB, Ulster, Virgin Money.
  • Soft searches: Starling, Metro Bank, and Chase

I have a bad credit score, will I be accepted to XXX bank?

Unfortunately, we do not know the acceptance criteria of the banks. You might be unlucky with one bank, but lucky with another.

My application was rejected. Why?

Nobody here knows. You could try appealing, but your only way to find out more is to contact the bank.

After switching my account, I still have online banking with my old provider. Do I need this?

No. You do not need to keep the online access (you could shut it down). But you may wish to retain these details in case your old bank suddenly appears with an offer that makes you want to switch back. Or open up a savings account.

Has anyone else been paid for switching to XXX Bank yet?

Check the terms of the offer you signed up for. Some banks have long deadlines and stick to them (e.g. Santander, TSB). Some are quicker. If you haven't been paid within the stated terms, then you should contact the bank's support.

2024.05.15 19:04 FullExamination5518 Looking to upgrade my old Chromebook

I've been a Chromebook user for the past decade or so but recently I've been disliking the idea of cloud services being in control of my life and being restricted to whatever little these computers have to offer.
I'm a very light user I would say, I mostly just do LaTeX writing (online) and light browsing. I dont hold a lot of data in my computer mostly just important stuff and some odd movie for emergency offline time.
I'm however sometimes interested in doing some very light video and audio editing and perhaps some very casual gaming. I do all those three things in some 2019 mid range android phone.
I'm looking forward to moving away from Google services and I would also like to do some light coding and tinkering with my computer (like setting up basic servers for web, streaming, file backup, etc).
I'm often on the move but I rarely need to use my laptop outside my office or home. I'm also in a tight budget.
I'm thinking I can upgrade to a laptop in the 300-400 USD range (not in the US, but for reference) to something that at least runs Windows or a not annoying Linux distro. I am a bit worried tho that I'm just going to get essentially the chromebook experience for that price range. My current chromebook is a few years old but usually runs smooth it serves its purpose and I enjoy how lightweight it is in every aspect, I got it for like 250 bucks iirc. I wouldn't want to buy a laptop that is 100,150 dollars more but that uses the extra specs to run a heavier OS.
Im looking at the ASUS Vivobook Go 15 rn and it seems sufficient, but again I don't want to spend money just to end up with a laptop thats going to slow down if I have too many tabs open on chrome or whatever.
I'd be happy if you could suggest me something around that range. Thanks.

2024.05.15 19:04 Street_Attorney_9367 PK format on DDB

Hey guys. I’ve been designing a table for something at work. It’ll be a table with likely only a handful of items. I don’t see it going beyond 15-20 as it’s a table dedicated to storing information about our third party integrations. Each item will consist of the same attributes, but will have different PK+SK pairs - nothing abnormal here.
An example of its use would be:
For this type of request, what vendor adapter should the Lambda route to? It’ll at first get a return from the query with likely 1 or more vendors that are Active (bool attribute) - this is the only filter on it. In my query it also narrows it down based on the type which I’ve put down as a GSI1Pk. So that’ll narrow down the returned items to the client side (Typescript Backend Lambda). The typescript logic I’m writing will need to loop/filter through those results and match based on the type of transaction occurring. Ultimately if there are more than one vendors, it’ll use the priority attribute to choose the right one.
Where the disagreement at work has started has something to do with performance and latency. A higher-up (let’s call him Ted) made a remark about latency and instead of using some filter expressions to narrow this down, we should instead redesign the entire table idea.
Ted wants the PK not to be something like VendorName as I set it, instead he’d like it to be a concatenation of attribute names which then determine the different vendors:
PK: type_small_currency
This will essentially return a list of vendors wherein the items will support small transactions, on the selected currency and be of the right ‘type’.
I personally find this to be really weird and it means we have domain leakage - as the code will have to define what small is, rather than let the response give back all the items and the client side just matches on it.
He’s also said that each vendor in the way I have it has too many nested objects etc. the deepest nest I have is like 3 in. It’s really not that deep, but it makes it seriously more readable for front end staff.
I mentioned that if what small means changes, we have to update code. It doesn’t feel right. It also means frontend staff need to get what small medium and large means. We’d also have to potentially add extra_large one day
Anyway, is Ted’s pattern typical? I feel like if it is, it’s not really right for our use case
