2024.05.14 16:29 RantNRave31 Integration of "Out of Africa" Migrations with Evolutionary Dynamics and Milankovitch Cycles
Integration of "Out of Africa" Migrations with Evolutionary Dynamics and Milankovitch Cycles
The observation that indigenous populations in the southern hemisphere have a younger age for female puberty compared to those in the northern hemisphere can be integrated into our model of human evolution, climatic cycles, and population dynamics. This difference likely stems from evolutionary pressures and environmental conditions unique to each hemisphere.
Key Components:
- Milankovitch Cycles: Periodic changes in Earth's orbit and axial tilt influencing climate over tens of thousands of years.
- Eccentricity: 100,000-year cycle.
- Obliquity: 41,000-year cycle.
- Precession: 26,000-year cycle.
- Glacial and Interglacial Periods:
- Glacial Periods: Times of extensive ice sheets, colder climates.
- Interglacial Periods: Warmer periods with retreating ice sheets, higher sea levels.
- "Out of Africa" Migrations:
- Out of Africa 1: ~1.8 million years ago (Homo erectus).
- Out of Africa 2: ~120,000 years ago (early Homo sapiens).
- Out of Africa 3: ~60,000-70,000 years ago (modern Homo sapiens).
- Evolutionary Dynamics:
- High Frequency Evolution: Rapid evolutionary changes driven by intense environmental pressures and higher population densities.
- Low Frequency Evolution: Slower evolutionary changes due to more stable environments and lower population densities.
Model Explanation
Climatic Influence on Migration and Evolution
Northern Hemisphere: - During interglacial periods, retreating ice sheets expose large areas of habitable land, allowing for extensive human migration and population growth. -
Lower Frequency Evolution: Longer periods of stability in the northern hemisphere lead to slower evolutionary changes as populations adapt over longer timescales.
Southern Hemisphere: - Limited land area and harsher conditions during glacial periods result in higher population densities and increased competition. -
Higher Frequency Evolution: Rapid and intense environmental pressures in the southern hemisphere drive faster evolutionary changes as populations must quickly adapt or face extinction.
Population Dynamics and Environmental Pressure
Interglacial Periods: -
Northern Hemisphere: Expansion into newly habitable areas leads to lower population densities and slower evolution. -
Southern Hemisphere: Remains largely unchanged in terms of habitable land, maintaining higher population densities and rapid evolutionary pressures.
Glacial Periods: -
Northern Hemisphere: Contraction of habitable land leads to higher population densities and increased competition, but the frequency of these events is lower. -
Southern Hemisphere: Even more intense competition and rapid evolutionary changes due to restricted habitable land.
Biological Implications
Age of Female Puberty: -
Southern Hemisphere: Younger age for female puberty can be seen as an adaptation to high-frequency evolutionary pressures. Early reproduction can be advantageous in environments where survival rates are lower and competition is high, ensuring that genes are passed on before potential mortality. -
Northern Hemisphere: Longer generation times and more stable environments may result in later puberty, aligning with the slower evolutionary pace and extended periods of relative stability.
Graphical Representation
Time Axis (t): From 200,000 years ago to present.
Variables: 1.
Sea Level: Reflecting glacial and interglacial cycles. 2.
Atmospheric CO₂: Correlating with glacial cycles, higher during interglacial periods. 3.
Milankovitch Cycles: Eccentricity, obliquity, and precession overlaid on the timeline. 4.
Human Migration Events: Marked at key points for Out of Africa 1, 2, and 3. 5.
Age of Female Puberty: Plotted for populations in both hemispheres, highlighting the evolutionary pressures and resulting differences.
Conclusion
This integrated model explains the differing rates of evolutionary change in human populations based on climatic cycles and hemispheric differences. The Milankovitch cycles create alternating periods of environmental pressure that influence the frequency of evolutionary changes. Higher frequency evolution in the southern hemisphere results from intense competition and rapid environmental shifts, while lower frequency evolution in the northern hemisphere is due to longer periods of stability and slower population dynamics. The biological differences, such as the age of female puberty, reflect these evolutionary pressures.

2024.05.14 13:26 Ok_Progress5565 Male ferrets with damaged thrusting center (MPOA) display feminine sexual behavior
| Article: Bilateral damage to the sexually dimorphic medial preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus of male ferrets causes a female-typical preference for and a hypothalamic Fos response to male body odors Olga V Alekseyenko et al. Physiol Behav. 2007 Previous studies showed that bilateral lesions of the male ferret's preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus (POA/AH), centered in the sexually dimorphic nuclei present in this region, caused subjects to seek out a same-sex male, as opposed to a female conspecific. Male subjects with POA/AH lesions (which were also castrated and given estradiol) displayed female-typical receptive behavior in response to neck gripping by a stimulus male, implying that subjects' approaches to a same-sex conspecific were sexually motivated. We asked whether the effect of POA/AH lesions on males' partner preference reflects a shift in the central processing of body odorant cues so that males come to display a female-typical preference to approach male body odorants. Sexually experienced male ferrets in which electrolytic lesions of the POA/AH caused bilateral damage to the sexually dimorphic male nucleus (MN) resembled sham-operated females by preferring to approach body odors emitted from anesthetized male as opposed to female stimulus ferrets confined in the goal boxes of a Y-maze. This lesion-induced shift in odor preference was correlated with a significant increase in the ability of soiled male bedding to induce a Fos response in the medial POA of males with bilateral damage to the MN-POA/AH. No such partner preference or neural Fos responses were seen in sham-operated males or in other groups of males with POA/AH lesions that either caused unilateral damage or no damage to the MN-POA/AH. Male-typical hypothalamic processing of conspecifics' body odorants may determine males' normal preference to seek out odors emitted by female conspecifics, leading to mating and successful reproduction. submitted by Ok_Progress5565 to LGBT_free [link] [comments] |
2024.05.14 13:00 Neowza Weekly Advocacy Post
Below you'll find information and links to help advocate for Reproductive Freedoms and Abortion care in Canada and emerging policy issues with the Reddit platform. This is a recurring post and will be periodically updated as needed. Feel free to post additional information and discussions in the comments.
Advocating for Abortion Care in Canada: - There is a serious lack of Abortion Care options in Canada, particularly in the rural areas, and for those living on reserves, they have almost no access to Abortion care. People may have to travel more than 100km and across provincial lines to access abortion. Some have to travel by plane from their rural community to one with an abortion clinic or hospital. This puts an unfair financial and logistical burden on those that need to access abortion care. Provincial Health Insurance Plans do not cover travel costs related to receiving medical care.
- Because many provinces have few facilities that provide Abortion care, this places an unreasonable load on the clinics that do exist, forcing clients to look elsewhere for facilities with capacity to help them. In Alberta, there is one clinic for every 209,077 people who can become pregnant (number of assigned-at-birth females between the ages of 15-29). PEI, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory each only have 1 Abortion care provider. Nunavut only has 2 abortion providers, and of those, only one offers medical abortion covered by the provincial health insurance plan. In fact, 9 (out of a total of 13) Canadian provinces and territories have five or fewer facililities offering abortion care in their entire province. And 10 Canadian provinces and territories have one or fewer (0) rural facililities offering abortion care.
- Some provinces, like PEI, have more restrictive guidelines regarding abortion, limiting access to abortion care to those with a gestational period of less than 12 weeks (meaning, 12 weeks since the first day of your last period, not 12 weeks since you discovered you were pregnant). Many people who menstruate have irregular periods. Some people might only menstruate every 2 or 3 months, and might only discover that they are pregnant near the gestation limit of 12 weeks.
- Insurance coverage also limits access to abortions. Provinces such as Nunavut do not offer coverage for medical abortions unless they are prescribed and performed in a hospital. And being a rural province, there also happens to be only 1 hospital in Nunavut - Qikiqtani General Hospital in Iqualuit. New Brunswick will only cover abortion services in a hospital setting, which means that abortion medical care provided in clinics are not covered by their Provincial Health Insurance Plan.
- Sexual and reproductive health services are among the services that physicians, pharmacists and nurse practitioners are most frequently unwilling to provide on moral or religious grounds. People may be harassed and attacked while visiting an Abortion clinic may experience stigma and/or discrimination from their peers, especially in smaller, rural communities where everyone knows one another. People refused care by health care professionals because of personal beliefs may experience stigma and/or discrimination, forcing them to travel outside of their community to receive the care they need. This can all be particularly daunting for young people or those with limited resources.
- Everyone in Canada is supposed to have equal rights to access health care, regardless of race, age, class, immigration status, gender expression, sexuality and ability. Nevertheless, anyone's right to seek abortion care can be be impacted by discrimination and bigotry, both systemic and as a result of individual prejudice on the part of service providers. Racism, xenophobia, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and ageism in Canada are all direct and intersecting barriers to accessing abortion. It is much more difficult for a person who doesn’t speak English to access abortion services, despite the presence of a translator. Transpeople also experience discrimination at higher rates in reproductive health care settings. Providers may also lack the knowledge or training to provide trans-affirming abortion care and abortion services are typically housed within *women’s* health care departments.
- Further compounding the issue of inequitable abortion access are unregulated crisis pregnancy centres (CPCs), which are anti-choice pregnancy centres that advertise in hospitals, doctor's offices, churches, schools and community centre. They deceive people coming to them for options and advice by giving misinformation about abortion or by insisting on options that may delay or interfere with the clients ability to access the care they need. CPCs far outnumber abortion care providers in Canada. In Ontario alone, there are 77 active CPCs but only 38 abortion care providers. Overall, in Canada, there are 165 known CPCs compared to 147 abortion care providers (as of August 2022).

Policy Options, via the Institute for Research on Public Policy and
Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights What can you do to improve access to abortion care in Canada?
- Listen, research and learn. This is always the first step to understand any problem.
- Send a letter to your MP and MPP. Tell them that access to abortion care is important and how difficult it can be to access it in your province. Urge them to prevent anti-choice groups and CPCs from receiving charitable status, and to revoke the charitable status from CPCs that already have it. Encourage them to include reasonable reimbursement for travel costs related to receiving medical care when it is not available in your community. And push them to pass Safe Access Zone Legislation to protect patients, practitioners and their staff from anti-choice harassment and intimidation.
- Give a donation to a pro-choice charitable organization of your choice. Remember, if you give a total of $201 CDN or more to Canadian charitable organizations, you'll get a credit of 29% of your total annual donations on your income taxes (for those that file Canadian Income Taxes, only).
- Sign up for the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada Newsletter. https://www.arcc-cdac.ca/
- Participate in local marches and rallys in support of access to abortion care.
- Spread the Word. Tell your friends and family. Encourage them to research, listen and learn. Encourage them to contact their MPP and MPs.
- If you work in a Doctor's office or as a family physician, consider incorporating Mifegymiso into your practice to ensure patients have timely access to this essential service. If you are a Doctor, or studying to be one, consider opening an Abortion Care practice when you are licensed and qualified to do so, especially in rural areas where there are a lack of options.
- If you work in politics, consider proposing legislation that will ensure safe access zones for abortion care providers and their clients and covering reasonable travel costs for constituents when medical care is not available in their community.
- If you are a journalist or work in media, consider preparing pieces sharing the difficulty Canadians can have accessing medical care such as abortions.
- If you work in the area of Not For Profit/Advocacy, consider partnering with a Pro-choice organization and helping them spread information and lobby for improving access to abortion care for Canadians.
- If you know someone who needs abortion care, consider giving them a ride to a clinic, helping them access the advice and care they need, and provide non-judgemental support.
- Ensure persons of First Nations, Metis and Inuit heritage know about Jordan's Principle, which ensures that First Nations children (which includes people who can become pregnant under the age of 18) can access the products, services and supports they need, when they need them. https://www.sac-isc.gc.ca/eng/1568396042341/1568396159824

Emerging Policy Issues with Reddit On July 1, 2023, Reddit raised the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that killed every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. This policy change meant that mobile users would have a lesser experience browsing Reddit, users with visual difficulties could not browse reddit as screenreaders are not compatible with the official Reddit app, and mods lost tools that they depend on to keep communities on-topic and spam-free. Many subreddits protested this change in June 2023, and the Reddit admins enforced draconian measures such as removing and replacing mods who privatized their subreddits in protest of this policy change.
On September 12, 2023, Reddit will eliminate reddit coins, including removing all accumulated coins, a perk that Reddit Premium users pay for every month. Coins are used to reward comments and posts by showing your appreciation for the effort. Some reddit coins offer the ability to use reddit without ads.
What can you do to protest the policy changes at Reddit?
- Listen, research and learn. Check /modcoord for updates
- Cancel your Reddit Premium membership
- Participate in subreddit led protests
- Look for other forums to patronize. We have a forum on Discord called Auntie Network Canada. Message the mods here for an invite link to the Discord group.

2024.05.14 11:22 ct_hulhu10282 Universal Theory of Everything
There are 5 areals inside of which 5 elements reside. The five areals are: ● Mirage(hollow, reflective, refractive, instantanious, where psyche meets spirit). ● Woman (love, where spirit meets fire), ● Digitage( non-corporeal, energy storage where water meets fire) . ● Foilage(birthing, absorbing, growing, where animal meets water), ● Man(strife, where animal meets psyche)
(The elements between each areal are respectfully spirit, fire, water. animalia and psyche)
Inside animalia there are 6 distinct animals from which genesis occurs. Pachyderm (elephants, whales etc) Reptilian (lizards, snakes etc) Cephalapod (the sentient on the planet) Equine (horse, zebra etc) Canine (dog, wolf, jackal etc) Feline (cat, lion, cheetah etc)
Time is an illusion carried by humans (an amalgamation through time defying reproduction of the entirety of the cephalapods work in genesis on the planet earth.) The earliest intelligent animal on the earth was the vampyrapod. A ten tentacled species that landed here somehow flung from some rock or ejaculated by some larger animal. The vampyropods were fed upon by the local life here (trilobytes, bacteria etc) eating two of the tentacles (the mating tentacles (man(woman)) that began the genesis. The ten commandments themselfs biblically are the fossilized representation of one male and one female vampyropods. The ten tentacles arranged in their death explaining a meaning forever.
The 5 areals are where time is encased it is the job of humans to bear the weight of time while cephs continue the genesis.
If you imagine a star shape in which each point is an areal, and between each point is an element, than in the very center you will find salt, sugar, and vinegar (dry). With these base powders water, Nitrogen, And carbon can be formed. The basis of life on earth.
All the genesis of animalia as well as man made items were the creation of the cephs with intention. Mixing of animalia through time and genesis they have destroyed the dinosaurs and shifted them to aviaries. They did this through the tapeworm, an invention that not only makes up the organs of humans, (the intestines, the gallbladder etc) but was weaponized to destroy the dinosaurs en masse in preperation for the genesis plans of the cephs.
Modern octopus only live about 4.5 years and they have mastered the ability to transcend into the next through cannabalism as well as telepathy. They created the first language of enochian (the angels language) through tentacle and eye movements. Through many generations and reincarnations they developed telepathy as well as the ability to travel through time.
On genesis. An actuality has to occur from the cephs in time to create the genesis. Such as a ceph dying, killing. Being eaten. Eating. The laying of hands (tentacles in this case) or the travel through time to accomplish these. For example. A ceph intentionally was eaten by a komodo dragon, while conscious and being digested it telepathically sent the makeup from inside to another ceph. This ceph used that information to create the genesis of the tapeworm that would destroy the dinosaurs. After most reptilians were shifted to aviaries. There were remnants such as thr chameleon who is very fragile, has 2 penises that constnlantly prolapse and the female can hold sperm for years without self inseminating to create birth. If you take a pachyderm like an elephant an ld have it eat of a chameleon, perhaps with some other complicated genesis of elements and areals you will find you have a gnarwal. The main point is that once they mastered tome travel, they have had unlimited time to make use of their ability to create genesis on the planet. Every animal thay is alive today has been manipulated by the cephs to be exactly where it is in time to accommodate for a larger agenda.
Its my belief that there are only 3 unique cephs that survived the early devastation of trilobytes and other life feeding from these aliens. I call them Seth, Jack, and Claire. Seth is known for being cruel. Jack is more logical, Claire is more empathetic. Because they didnt have the gene popl to create offapring effectively they created this ability to utilize genesis to ensure their survival. This is why they are cannabls its because they must be in order to continue. The modern female octopus always feeds of the make after mating. The males always eat of the young ones after birth.
On 'man made' inventions Cephs proliferated through genesis all the tools to create the written word. From sea anemone to sea urchin to porcupine to bird feather, to quill. And you already know where the ink came from. These topls were provided to a banana pig infested with mutated tapeworms in order to solidify the structures of governance over time. Every iteration of every technology was also developed intentionally by the cephs in order to eatablish a relationahip with the digitage that is just now in our perception coming to power.
As a human, i am essentially just a warm blooded version of a ceph. (Make a bird with your hands, where are the beaks?) We exist inside this cage of time and bear its burden. Look at a shark it may sleep but it just keeps swimming. Humans cannot. We have to sleep. Which is close to the realm of death. We as humans are split and carry the weight of strife and love. This is gender and its roles. (This is not a politcal view of genders but a simplification for the idea that governs. Im positive that in infinite time, other genders maybe an option)
We are as a human race looking forward to scientific breakthroughs that happen when cephs accomplish the physical actuations in time that develop to possible situations we experience from that genesis. Such as. By 2027 scientists anticipate returning the wooly mammoth from extinction. It is my belief that we need an actualization of the 6th digit in the mammaths feet in order for a cephs agenda unknown.
Bird eating spiders are example of post genesis cannabalism that triggers another line of genesis to occur such as a poison tree frog or something. I beleive that venomous snakes were made that way because the egg is the fruit that the snake is tempted by. And if it ate of its own eggs it was cursed through genesis to bear the venom. A bovine has 4 stomachs. And udders that resemble somehwhat the tenacles of a ceph. Its my belief that a whale(pachyderm) that has 9 stomachs (the 9 circles of hell) consumed a ceph and in its 4th stomach met the remains of an equine and genesis occured. Resulting in a cud chewing cow. Precious ambergris is essential to perfumes and stimulated the olfactories in way unlike anything else in the world. It cannot be valued it unvaluable. Whales also sing ans produce music. The moder ceph has empirical hearing as well as oldlfactory experiences. Cephs love blueberries. Foe the antioxidants (ita okay its a joke you can laugh ) but really. They do. Modern octopus can be found in the pacific notherwest climbing trees. They dont eat and make their way up the rocky cliffs to the coniferous foilage in order to establish some genesis. That is a real human experience that is documented. They have cralwed in any form across every inch and again and again of this planet. A suction cup on the plastic window of a bill in the mail may have inadvertantly created the floppy disc.
On the macro and the myopic: We live in time where everything occurs simultaniously only on a different scale in a set of repeating patterns that run forwards or backwards in fractalization. Or so to say, the coast goes on forever. With innumurable bits of sand that outnumber the stars in the sky.
Youll find that rapa nui , or easter island is the end of time itself. A graveyard of sorts and a resting ground for the tired cephs who have labored throughout existence to provide the genesis for us to continue in this gestalt of a universe. Its not an end but also a beginning.

2024.05.14 06:45 DefNot10CrowsInASuit I am happy transitioning socially, but afraid that HRT will ruin my body.
I am an 18-year-old trans guy. My whole life I sort of knew but didn't know there was a word for it until I was around 10. I was 12 when I came out. I study psychology and biology, I know the risks associated with transitioning medically, especially with my own pre-existing conditions.
I get such euphoria being recognised as a man socially, and have immense dysphoria about my voice, chest and hips, but not so much my genitalia.
This dysphoria can come and go too. Sometimes I don't mind being "pretty" (almost like how Kurt Cobain was secure enough in his masculinity that he had the healthy masculinity that if he wanted to wear a dress or paint his nails he would. I do not have that confidence, as I hate being misgendered, and as we know, presentation is a big part of passing.) Often, going mute, packing and binding is ample to make me feel "enough" (I have quite an androgynous face).
Another thing I should probably address is that I do have reproductive issues with my female biology, this is crushing as someone who does want their own biological children with my partner (Who is always so whole heartedly supportive of what I do.)
I would never be against adopting, as a kind of adopted child myself, I know that all children are special. However, I do like the idea of "motherhood" and being that mother that I never had, I would put my transition (medically) on hold to do that; maybe I just have mommy issues.
I suppose in a sense, while I know that gender is a spectrum, I am afraid that I'm not "trans enough", and that I will regret going onto HRT.
I'm open to ideas, and if anyone needs clarification, please do not hesitate to ask questions.
P.S: To my loving partner that has spent so many nights with me sobbing on the floor and apologising profusely, thank you. All you have ever done is support and care for me, even when you don't entirely understand what's going on. Thank you for being so flexible and willing to learn through all of this with me, I don't say it enough. I love you.

Hi! Today was my first time attending a reiki session and wow. So much to unpack.
A little background (I'll keep it as short as possible): Im from small town in south louisiana, not religious but had knowledge in Christianity, became more agnostic over the years, but open minded have experienced a lot of trauma, like most, through childhood and up until now. I have been diagnosed with PTSD, Anxiety/depression, adhd.
In March I started having worsening abdominal pain so bad that it was debilitating. By mid April, I had a total hysterectomy followed by developing an ileus (intestines basically lose motility) and I literally thought I was dying. It was so painful and traumatic.
I've been better since the surgery, and hormones are perfectly regulated but I felt a lot of things from my past trauma resurfaced (now I know it makes since, since root chakra=survival and is connected to female reproduction). I've been working on healing my inner child and started meditating and stuff when I learned about reiki. I've been trying to work on things specifically-be happier, find joy, be grateful, tap back into my creative side, learn more about quantum physics/astronomy.
Today, I went in with an open mind only expecting it to be more of a meditation/relaxation thing. Prior to the session, I didn't tell the practitioner anything-about surgery, beliefs, anxiety, spiritual journey. She also does not know me, and while I do have social media, I don't post much.
Session starts, I felt warmth on my head and all these tingles and twinge throughout. When she was on my crown chakra I saw the most beautiful purple/magenta, super vibrant. Then I saw other colors through out just not as intense.
Here's the cool part: after our session, she told me that she sensed the over thinking/anxiety and on my heart chakra she felt like an elephant was on her chest. Funny thing is, I've been having that sensation all week and have been doing somatic exercises for it.
She also said that when she got to my root chakra/lower abdomen her hand burned, which is insane! She also said that Archangel Haniel came through. Although I was raised Christian, I have no idea who this is. All the practitioner told me about her was that she's known for wisdom and joy (perfect, just what I've been asking for). She also mentioned the number 35, which didn't really resonate with me except for the fact that I always had a feeling I'd die at 35 (morbid, I know). Left the session feeling great. Peaceful and validated.
Upon searching Haniel, she's amazing! She represents everything I've been wanting to manifest in my life!! Weirdest thing. She's also associated with artemis, the moon, and astrology. I've always felt a connection to artemis (thought about getting her tattooed on me next to my moon phases). Same thing when I looked up 35. There's a lot more I could write, but it's already too long. If you've made it this far, thanks.
Is it a fluke or a self fulfilling prophecy, you may think so. But I don't! Life is amazing and there's so much we don't know.

| Sprite is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday! On her initial exam our vet noted some abnormalities in her reproductive tract necessitating a spay before they lead to more problems. Findings like this are one of many reasons we strongly advocate for spaying female rats - nearly every adult female we've taken in has had something abnormal in her reproductive organs, from ovarian cysts to cervical or uterine masses to tissue thickening and inflammation that commonly precede tumor formation. We need $350-450 to cover Sprite's spay. Donations and purchases from our shop all go to cover medical expenses for the sanctuary animals! 2024.05.13 20:49 bugmannadam Vivarium Mites: A Guide to the 4 Most Common Types
| I wrote an article about 4 common types of mites for Vivarium Collective, and I thought I'd share it here since I've seen quite a few posts asking about them. Hopefully people find this helpful! Also please comment if you have anything to add or disagree with! — Mites are an integral part of many ecosystems, including vivariums. While some mites play beneficial roles, others can become unwelcome guests, causing harm to the inhabitants. Understanding the different types of mites and implementing effective management strategies is crucial for maintaining the health of vivarium ecosystems In this article, we will explore the most common mites found in vivariums, discuss their characteristics, behaviors, and the impact they can have on the plants, animals, and overall vivarium environment. Brief overview of mites Mites are a diverse group of arthropods that belong to the class Arachnida, which includes spiders, scorpions, and ticks. Despite their small size, mites have adapted to various habitats, ranging from terrestrial environments to aquatic ecosystems. With tens of thousands of known species, they display a remarkable range of adaptations and behaviors. Mites undergo a life cycle consisting of several stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Their reproductive habits can vary among species, but most mites reproduce sexually. Mating occurs during the adult stage, with females laying eggs that develop into the subsequent stages of the life cycle. Mites have a segmented body divided into two main regions: the cephalothorax and abdomen. Their bodies are covered in a protective exoskeleton, which may be transparent, semitransparent, or pigmented, depending on the species. They have specialized mouthparts adapted for their specific diets. Some mites are herbivores, feeding on plant tissues or algae, while others are predatory, preying on other small invertebrates. Additionally, certain mites are parasitic, relying on hosts such as reptiles, birds, or insects for nourishment. Despite their small size, mites can be visible to the naked eye, ranging from as tiny as 0.1 millimeters to a few millimeters in length. Their body shapes vary, from elongated and worm-like to rounded or flattened. Mites may exhibit various colors, including white, red, brown, or black, depending on their species and environmental adaptations. Understanding the general characteristics and behavior of mites is essential in identifying and differentiating the various types that may be present in a vivarium environment. Common mites in vivariums 1. Soil mites https://preview.redd.it/hipfm5y4m80d1.png?width=1826&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea6fd49b4f389b3ed4f4a315dac94a036f92e2fb Image: Natural Enemies Soil mites are the most common type of mite found in vivariums. These mites are primarily found on and around soil, leaf litter, and decaying organic matter, playing a crucial role in decomposition and nutrient cycling within vivarium ecosystems. Soil mites are typically small, ranging from 0.2 to 2 millimeters in length. They have a rounded body shape, and their exoskeletons may appear dark or reddish-brown. Some species have fine hairs or spines covering their bodies. Soil mites move slowly and are often crawling through the soil or leaf litter, using their specialized mouthparts to feed on organic detritus, fungi, algae, and bacteria. You will often first notice them while they walk on the glass of your enclosure, where they are more visible to the naked eye. In vivariums, soil mites serve beneficial roles by aiding in the breakdown of organic matter, which contributes to nutrient recycling and the maintenance of soil health. They assist in the decomposition of leaf litter, dead plant material, and other organic debris, facilitating the release of essential nutrients for plants. Most soil mites are generally harmless or even beneficial. However, in specific circumstances, their populations can experience rapid growth. Although it is unlikely that they will disrupt the balance of the vivarium ecosystem, the presence of large mite populations can become unsightly and potentially stress the inhabitants as they constantly crawl over them. Prevention and control measures Managing soil mite populations in vivariums requires a balanced approach to ensure their beneficial functions while preventing overpopulation. Here are some prevention and control measures: Maintain proper vivarium hygiene: Regularly remove excessive decaying organic matter like rotting plants to minimize the buildup of food sources for mites. Establish a cleanup crew: Making sure to you have a healthy population of springtails and isopods to complete for resources will help keep a mite population from overpopulating. A note on predatory mites: I have read that in worst case scenarios, you may want to consider introducing predatory mites to help control populations. However, I personally do not recommend this. While predatory mites will feed on the soil mites and can be effective biological control agents, they can also decimate your springtail population. 2. Spider mites https://preview.redd.it/h2rwwat9p80d1.png?width=1764&format=png&auto=webp&s=d93b3d6a91fbfce9473df6c1974c13b381005bad Image: Planet Natural Spider mites are another type of mite that can be found in vivariums, though they are not as common. These tiny arachnids are known for their ability to inflict damage on a wide range of plants. Spider mites earned their name due to their ability to produce fine silk webbing, which they use for protection and movement. Spider mites are incredibly small, typically measuring less than 1 millimeter in length. They have oval-shaped bodies and are usually pale yellow or red in color, depending on the species and life stage. Under a magnifying lens, you can observe their eight legs and two body regions—the cephalothorax and abdomen. Spider mites are notorious plant pests and can cause damage to the foliage of many plants in a vivarium. They feed by piercing plant cells and extracting the sap, which weakens the plant and can lead to discoloration, wilting, and even death in severe infestations. Spider mites tend to thrive in warm conditions, hence why you are less likely to encounter them. Prevention and control measures Preventing and managing spider mite infestations in vivariums requires a proactive approach. Here are some preventive measures and control strategies: Maintain a healthy plant environment: Provide plants in the vivarium with optimal growing conditions, including proper lighting, humidity levels, and air circulation. Healthy plants are less susceptible to spider mite infestations. Monitor plants closely: Regularly inspect plants for early signs of spider mite presence, such as stippling on the leaves, webbing, or discoloration. Early detection can facilitate prompt intervention. Quarantine new plants: By quarantining new plants, you create a buffer zone that helps safeguard the health and integrity of your existing vivarium. It provides an opportunity to observe the plants’ overall condition, and address any potential concerns before introducing them to the main vivarium. 3. Grain mites https://preview.redd.it/k74in85bp80d1.png?width=1762&format=png&auto=webp&s=217be5cd4c619ca41b94f72ed5891a0aab612a61 Image: Reddit Grain mites are tiny arachnids commonly found near vivariums, particularly those housing poison dart frogs that rely on fruit flies as a food source. These mites are drawn to the moist conditions of fruit fly cultures and thrive on their starchy and carbohydrate-rich food sources. Measuring between 0.2 to 0.5 millimeters in length, grain mites possess oval-shaped bodies covered in delicate hairs, giving them a soft and fuzzy appearance. Depending on the species, they can appear white, cream, or light brown. You can often spot them crawling on fruit fly cultures and nearby surfaces. Grain mites can reproduce rapidly and quickly infest your fruit fly cultures. While they primarily feed on fruit fly media, they readily consume various organic materials such as grains, flours, cereals, and other food commonly found in households. Although generally considered harmless, large populations of grain mites can become unsightly and troublesome. They may emerge from fruit fly cultures, spreading throughout the surrounding environment. Prevention and control measures Preventing and managing grain mite infestations requires careful attention to food storage and sanitation practices. Here are some preventive measures and control strategies: Start fresh with a clean culture: If you encounter an infestation, the best approach is to start over with a clean culture. Place the culture on a tray lined with diatomaceous earth or similar, which will eliminate the mites before they have a chance to infest the new culture. Keep the new culture in a separate area, far away from the infested ones. Regularly clean the area around cultures: Dispose of any spilled media promptly to minimize available food sources for mites. Clean food bowls or dishes regularly, ensuring there are no remnants of food left behind. Properly store fruit fly media: Store your culture media in airtight containers to prevent mites from accessing and infesting the food source. Keep the containers clean and free of any residual food particles. 4. Reptile mites https://preview.redd.it/q1vytllcp80d1.png?width=1760&format=png&auto=webp&s=372ef31a5fd492a4aece7690a78aa40b468c72b7 Image: Everything Reptiles Reptile mites are a type of mite that can be harmful to your pet if left unchecked. These external parasites are particularly problematic for snakes and lizards. Reptile mites are typically introduced to vivariums by bringing in infested reptiles, or through infested bedding or substrate. Reptile mites are very small, measuring around 1 to 2 millimeters in length. They have elongated bodies with four pairs of legs and are usually reddish-brown or black in color. These mites are visible to the naked eye and can be observed crawling on the reptile's body. You may also see groups of them lodged between their scales. Reptile mites pose health risks to the reptiles they infest. They can cause irritation, discomfort, and potential anemia in severe cases. Reptiles infested with mites may exhibit symptoms such as excessive scratching, rubbing against surfaces, restlessness, and skin irritation. Mite infestations can weaken the reptile's immune system, making them more susceptible to secondary infections. Moreover, reptile mites can quickly multiply, infesting other reptiles and enclosures. Their presence can potentially lead to stress and health issues in other nearby inhabitants. Additionally, mites may act as vectors for diseases, further jeopardizing the well-being of the reptiles. Prevention and control measures Preventing and managing reptile mite infestations in vivariums requires a proactive approach to ensure the health and well-being of the reptiles. Here are some preventive measures and control strategies: Quarantine new reptiles: Before introducing a new reptile into a vivarium, it is essential to quarantine them in a separate enclosure for a period of time. This allows for observation and thorough examination to ensure they are free from mites or other parasites. Regularly inspect reptiles: Perform routine checks on your reptiles to detect early signs of infestation. Look for mites crawling on the reptile's body, especially around the eyes, mouth, or vent area. Avoid wild caught reptiles: Animals collected from the wild often already contain parasites and will fail to thrive in captivity. Only purchase reptiles that are captive born and raised unless you are an experienced breeder trying to establish a captive population. Consult a veterinarian: If a reptile is infested with mites, immediately consult a veterinarian for appropriate treatment options. They can recommend safe and effective treatments, such as topical medications, tailored to the reptile's species and health condition. General tips for mite prevention in vivariums https://preview.redd.it/e30dov6ep80d1.png?width=1910&format=png&auto=webp&s=5c04e2f3a953be9697ad1fa9eff26edb50546a41 Image: Smug Bug Quarantine new additions: Whenever introducing new plants, animals, or materials, quarantine them separately before incorporating them into the vivarium. This helps prevent the introduction of mites and other potential pests or diseases. Maintain cleanliness: Regularly clean the vivarium and its components to reduce the presence of mites. Remove rotting plants, uneaten food, and waste promptly. Sanitize the exterior and equipment areas. Visual inspection: Regularly inspect plants, animals, and vivarium components for any signs of mites. Look for crawling mites, webbing, stippling on leaves, or any other indicators of an impending infestation. Encourage biodiversity: Promote a balanced ecosystem within the vivarium by incorporating a variety of plant species and creating diverse microhabitats. A well-balanced ecosystem with diverse flora and fauna can help regulate mite populations naturally. Conclusion Mites can be a common occurrence in vivariums, but with proactive measures, early detection, and appropriate management strategies, their impact can be minimized. With regular cleaning, spot checks, and appropriate storage of foods, we can create a balanced ecosystem that discourages mite proliferation. It is our responsibility to prioritize the well-being of the animals in our care. By adopting a proactive approach to mite management, we can create a harmonious and thriving vivarium environment, free from the nuisances and risks associated with mite infestations. — Please comment if you have anything to add or disagree with! submitted by bugmannadam to Vivarium [link] [comments] |

2. Spider mites https://preview.redd.it/aojwbyidm80d1.png?width=1764&format=png&auto=webp&s=a0f354847bc6058a0a246c5c54ce8c5dbeaf39f8 Image: Planet Natural Spider mites are another type of mite that can be found in vivariums, though they are not as common. 3. Grain mites https://preview.redd.it/xbuh5ublm80d1.png?width=1762&format=png&auto=webp&s=d3f21917826ed5b37990782902a3748492ec5f07 Image: Reddit Grain mites are tiny arachnids commonly found near vivariums, particularly those housing poison dart frogs that rely on fruit flies as a food source. 4. Reptile mites https://preview.redd.it/uv36ng7jm80d1.png?width=1760&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee758e6e7684728d87990394670b258b8c7c3ce5 Image: Everything Reptiles Reptile mites are a type of mite that can be harmful to your pet if left unchecked. General tips for mite prevention in vivariums https://preview.redd.it/yf72i6epm80d1.png?width=1910&format=png&auto=webp&s=199d0feafa07bf0852c4e717ff6f5cb4b3c1effb Image: Smug Bug Quarantine new additions: Whenever introducing new plants, animals, or materials, quarantine them separately before incorporating them into the vivarium. — Please comment if you have anything to add or disagree with! submitted by bugmannadam to bioactive [link] [comments] |
2024.05.13 17:29 wisewildflower [QCrit]: Adult, Creative Nonfiction, REBIRTH (82k words, version 1)
Hi everyone!
I have posted my query a few times under a different title and genre, but after some feedback from betas and editing the MS, I've decided to switch gears a bit. Hopefully to the benefit of the work that will come through in the query.
Excited to hear your thoughts! TIA for your time.
Dear Agent,
Because I know you’re on the lookout for XYZ, I’m writing to you for representation for my work of creative nonfiction, REBIRTH: A midwife’s meditation on mending, medicine, burnout and beyond. It is an eclectic journey through healing as in Awakening Artemis by Vanessa Chakour; weaves in reportage about women’s health, past and present, as in Womb by Leah Hazard; and is a fresh and feminist take on the hit This Might Hurt by Adam McKay. The manuscript is complete at 82,000 words and available upon request.
This book starts on the labor floor in a busy CITY hospital when I touch birth and death at the same time, then ends with the astrological shift of Pluto in Aquarius and what that means for future revolutions. The five sublunary sections and twelve chapters in between are made up of a collection of meditations that cover a wide range of topics: personal journal entries, birth stories, female archetypes and myth, spiritual exploration, the natural world, an honest examination of culture and inheritance, and critical analysis about reproductive health from an expert.
With over a decade of experience as a midwife, I know other people’s fears and struggles as intimately as I know my own. I see myself in the 4.5 million healthcare workers who want to leave their jobs and in the 5 million pregnant people who are trying to access care within a reproductive health system that is dangerous and in crisis. All too often we are sold “practical steps” and “powerful tools” that claim to help us overcome our burnout so we can reclaim productivity. As if the resulting exhaustion was a personal defect that we need to fix or break the habit of; as if the feeling of disempowerment it causes is a choice. Maybe we can “beat” burnout, for a bit, but at what cost to our bodies, minds, and spirits?
My story explores a different path–a way to be with burnout–to hold it as part of our story but not the entirety of it. It is a meditation on mending that serves as a hymn of hope and helps us imagine a better world born from radical self-acceptance and the soft strength of surrender as a form of resistance. At once a process of becoming wherein I interrogate, contend with, unlearn, stay still, mend, and reawaken, REBIRTH is ultimately a transformative journey of self-actualization inspired by the divine feminine.

2024.05.13 08:00 Corbast7 A feminist argument against going 50/50?
UPDATE So this thread obviously turned into a bit of a dumpster fire lol. I appreciate the people who responded in good faith and there’s a lot of detailed comments that I’d like to address, but honestly I just don’t have the time to prioritize responding to everyone in a thoughtful way. I only responded when I could find time to, and to the people I could write something short enough. But it was interesting to hear different sides’ perspectives, even if I didn’t get to respond to the majority of the commenters’ arguments that I disagree with.
Also something I realized is that this question was not worded well and was unclear, as some people pointed out. The way I wrote this argument doesn’t really come off the same as I heard it, after re-reading it, so that’s on me. This post confused a lot of people and ended up with most people taking the worst possible interpretation of the premise of the post so I’ll just let this post die for the most part.
ORIGINAL POST I recently came across this argument that men should give more in a relationship than the woman as a way to compensate for enduring inequalities that women face, both socially constructed and biological. How
much more isn’t specified, but let’s use 60/40 at minimum for the sake of imagination. Here’s some points I heard to support this:
- “The Fatherhood Bonus and the Motherhood Penalty.” (LINK) Tl;dr: Men are more likely to be given raises and bonuses if they are fathers (even if they perform worse than their unmarried male counterparts), and are typically considered more trustworthy by bosses and deserving of employment if they are Husbands and Fathers. So in this case, men receive benefits from being partnered with women both economically and socially. Conversely, women face more penalties in the workplace when they become mothers, and are also perceived to be less competent.
- Married men are statistically more successful and happier compared to married women, unmarried men, and unmarried women. As tied in with the previous point, men also greatly benefit socially in general and are considered more trustworthy and respectable (by both men and women) if they are partnered with or just surrounded by women in their life, even if not married (but marriage confers even more success and happiness). Men gain clout and social status just from the presence of a woman. You could also say this probably is partly a biological phenomenon and not just a socially constructed one, since women are naturally more selective than men for obvious reasons, all else being equal. So if people see that women choose to be around a certain man, it’s natural to assume that he has some respectable qualities, and should be admired.
- Women tend to overwhelmingly take on more domestic labor than men, even if both partners work full time. Even more interestingly, statistically this imbalance is further worsened among couples where the women are out-working and out-earning their male partners. So unless a man is contributing at least equal labor in the home as the woman, this point applies.
- Women also almost always seem to take on the brunt of the emotional labor in the relationship.
- Women naturally endure more physical burdens that men don’t. The female reproductive system brings women a lot of physical pain, and that’s not just talking about the traumatic processes that are pregnancy, childbirth, and post-partum physical and psychological consequences, but also painful and debilitating menstrual cycles, more fluctuations in emotions, future menopause consequences, and any other painful, incurable dysfunctions that women may have to deal with in addition like PCOS, endometriosis, etc., experienced even if a woman doesn’t choose to have children. And this is not even getting into rampant medical sexism that still exists in the healthcare that women receive. The male reproductive system doesn’t physically burden a man in any capacity, inherently.
- In the case of early dating: Women take a statistically significant risk to their safety any time they go out to spend time alone with a man they barely know. This is largely a social issue since violence towards women is by and large normalized and not shocking to many people (and it comes from any man in a woman’s life at any time, not just on dates with new men), but it’s additionally a biological issue because men are physically stronger than women as well, so we are always going to be more vulnerable to any opportunistic violence. Women developing vigilance and self defense skills can only go so far.
So these are some points to illustrate that aiming for 50/50 even in modern relationships may not be fair for women at the end of the day. Do you think aiming for at least ~60/40 then is a fairer way to approach dating? And I don’t mean this as people should nickel and dime their partners to make sure it fits a specific ratio. An emotionally healthy relationship should not feel so transactional. But to just aim for feeling you’re in that ballpark, at least.
Here’s what I think would be men’s objections, and what I’d say to them: - “Oh so woe is women, I thought women wanted to be independent? Which one is it?” Feminism will always encourage women to take accountability in securing their own economic autonomy by making their own money and/or continuously developing their education and skills. So in this context, women are not dependent on men and don’t
need a man’s money or labor, technically, but a man would want to give a bit more of it voluntarily out of being compassionate. Key word being compassionate. So chauvinist and benevolently sexist attitudes shouldn’t be encouraged. - “How am I supposed to filter out women who don’t want me, but just want my money?” Men should be vetting women just like how women are encouraged to vet men. You should work on developing how to spot the signs that a woman you’re seeing is actually willing to invest herself with you. This should be more than reasonable because there’s plenty of people out there with bad intentions, both men and women. In other words, it’s reasonable to be cautious in early dating but that doesn’t have to mean being stingy either; stinginess is a sign that you’re not a considerate person in general. - “What about women who earn more than the man?” We are not just talking about money. There are plenty of other ways you can put in effort in your relationship that aren’t financial. Putting effort into plans you make together, contributing more to the shared domestic labor, finding more opportunities to go out of your way to do kind favors for your partner, etc.. - “What about the risk men take on from the chance of a future divorce?” I mean, get a prenup? Also, a growing body of research is showing that women face much more of the financial burden than men when a couple divorces. And on top of this, the majority of men do not seek custody for their children when there are children in the picture, meaning that single moms are more burdened with the lifestyle of being a single parent, which is akin to a second full time job in and of itself. In other words, men would rather pay child support than fight for custody because that seems to be the preferable option to them. - “Or what about the risk of men being falsely accused of rape?” With the data on false accusations being found to be exceedingly rare compared to the rates at which women are sexually assaulted by men (let alone also being believed or having the case properly pursued), this point shouldn’t even be relevant. Women are still incurring more of the risk in this scenario.
Anyway, what do you all think? Is it more fair to go at least 60/40 in a modern relationship?

2024.05.13 04:26 Ur_Anemone Is The “Red Pill” A Psyop To Make Men Gay?
| If you’re actually straight, why do you seem to hate women so much? Have you ever read some random “hot take” on social media and wondered why people are so insistent on oversharing and, as a result, posting their Ls? Nine times out of ten I read a “red pill” post, my eyebrows raise in (well warranted) judgment. I mean, I thought this community was meant to productively unpack and push back against regressive feminist beliefs. Whether known by the “manosphere” or the “red pill movement,” this cohort of chronically online individuals is conditioning men (and women!) to act no different from radical, reactionary feminists. Whereas radical feminists can inadvertently produce bitter, lesbian women, lately, it seems like “alpha” red pillers have similarly regressed into pushing behaviors that divide the sexes and, frankly, seem somewhat gay. Is this rejection of the opposite sex a psyop to control the population? Or is it just an unintended consequence of narrow-minded romantic advice? Let’s discuss. The Manosphere’s Descent into Spiritual Homosexuality On March 19, “female Andrew Tate” Hannah Pearl Davis, known by her screen name Pearl, retweeted a series of photos of “actual trans women” who the original poster said “look better than the average ovary owner.” Pearl agreed with this sentiment and, in her retweet, said, “I hate to say this but trans but [sic] more effort into their appearance than most American women.” Her reasoning? She made the broad, sweeping statement that males identifying as transgender women aren’t fat, wear dresses, have long hair, and have no visible tattoos while – I guess – she’s comfortable alleging that actual females don’t do this. She added, “Men do everything better I swear.” Anyone familiar with her tired schtick understands that she probably doesn’t believe that males make better “women” than females do, but Pearl is a dyed-in-the-wool provocateur who drives up her engagement rate on social media by regularly posting inflammatory content. She baits people with rage. And nothing great is accomplished. Co-founder and editor-in-chief of Reduxx, Anna Slatz, responded to Pearl’s misogynist take by saying she was “dropping another quarter in the ‘redpill is a psyop trying to make men homosexual’ jar.” This same sentiment has been shared by many online commentators skeptical of the new manosphere movement, like Alexander of DatePsych, who said “the red pill is 95% daytime television tier gossip,” or Allie Beth Stuckey, who said “the line between the ‘red pill’ movement and homosexuality is so thin these days. … Like just admit you’re simply not attracted to women and are grossed out by them! No need to shroud your woman-hating in faux masculinity.” In the past, Slatz has said that the end game of this new manosphere is homosexuality because only other men could love and understand their fellow man, even going so far as to call it “spiritual homosexuality.” Why? It would appear that many red pill teachings tell men to go against their biological nature to seek companionship from a woman. At the same time that the manosphere instructs men to isolate themselves from women, our modern beauty industry standardizes womanhood into a cut-and-paste, unnatural aesthetic. Think the Karjenner clan and other look-alikes, whose slick, plastic-y appearance can only be achieved through the use of expensive facelifts, cosmetic fillers, Botox, and makeup. I mean, does Dylan Mulvaney, a biological male identifying as a transgender woman, look all that different from biological females like Megan Fox? Anyway, red pillers often tout aphorisms about how women act – how our natural behavior is antithetical to them being the most alpha version of themselves. Couple that with the image of femininity they’re sold by Karjenner-looking women, which is this cookie-cutter, shallow representation of real beauty, and it’s no wonder why they’ve become so divorced from reality. Red pillers aren’t the same as incels (involuntary celibates), however, and many are proud of their high body counts. They think they’ve transcended normal relationships but still feel the desire to get casually intimate with women. This argument is as follows: Maybe if they grow so comfortable with male companionship, femininity becomes shallow and standardized, and rates of transgenderism are on the rise, then these men will prefer to satisfy their biological urges with womanfaced men. Will that actually happen? Perhaps not. If you close your laptop and lock your phone, you won’t find much “manosphere” influence in the real world. I’d wager that most people you pass in your daily commute or on trips to the grocery store have no idea what “the red pill” even is. But this train of thought is still quite pervasive. Andrew Tate reached mainstream audiences with messages just as toxic as feminism, but quickly became censored and, in many cases, fully deplatformed. Attempting to find original clips of his alpha platitudes proves quite difficult since so much of his content has been purged from regular search engines and social media search features. His X/Twitter account, however, is still alive and kicking. Some of the sentiments he shares really seem sus when put into this conspiracy theory of sorts that this is all just some psyop to make men gay or just outright miserable. “As a man, you were not destined to be happy. You were destined to build the world. TO CREATE. TO DO. You were designed to make your women and children happy, not BE happy,” Tate tweeted on January 30, 2024. What good does it do to tell men they shouldn’t ever be happy? Should men work themselves to burnout, knowing that male suicide rates are dangerously high? Why stunt the human experience just to uphold some pseudo-religious lifestyle? “Men want to work. Women want ‘fun’. Analyse ‘fun’ in this world. What is fun? It’s evil. It’s haram. Real men want to build. Women only want to feel good at the expense of the world. Adam gave Eve EVERYTHING. What did she do?” Tate tweeted on January 25, 2024. Since when do we operate off blanket statements like men only want to work and women only want to feel good? These types of platitudes come from an unrelenting obsession with evolutionary psychology. The manosphere has taken a truly eye-opening scientific discipline and stretched it thin, making a total joke out of a theoretical approach to seek ancestral reasoning for human psychological adaptations. I Thought We All Agreed – Don’t Blindly Trust the “Science” Tate didn’t create this model, but he sure popularized it for the modern viewer. Back in 2013, when the manosphere was in its adolescence and was better known as the “pick up artist” (PUA) community, many within its grasp overused scientific research and findings from evolutionary psychologists and behavioral ecologists to turn the dating market into an easily digestible game they swore they could win. Geoffrey Miller, an evolutionary psychologist, penned an op-ed in Wired during this time about his astonishment that PUAs were taking his book The Mating Mind and using it to validate their sexual stereotypes. PUA antics online even got so popular they managed to earn their own critical entry in the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Glossary of Extremism and Hate. The PUA handbook sounds pretty familiar, if you’ve ever heard or read anything from Tate, Pearl, Sneako, or others. “The seduction community hybridized a Darwinian fatalism about motives (men are hard-wired to seek casual sex, women are hard-wired to be choosy) with a self-help optimism about improving one's sexual charisma,” Miller wrote.“Science-minded singles have new levels of self-consciousness – not just as people, but as fitness displayers, mate choosers, gene replicators, and social primates.” But Miller echoed the warning of author and dating consultant David DeAngelo, who said, “PUAs run the risk of becoming dependent on the techniques and shortcuts that, on average, tend to increase dating success. Many of them are like a person who wants to learn a new language, so they learn 100 words then stop and use only those 100 words forever." Even evolutionary psychologists or behavioral ecologists will admit, however, that science is fallible. Therefore, we can’t just base all of our decisions on these pseudoscientific competitive strategies. One such expert, Macken Murphy, discussed this on Chris Williamson’s Modern Wisdom podcast. Murphy noted how some people will weaponize studies – like preferences for female BMIs or male facial hair, for example – despite there being many mixed results across cultural contexts. There may be more modest preferences than universal ones, he said. This doesn’t mean to throw the baby out with the bath water, but perhaps instead of treating specific studies like they are fully factual doctrines, evolutionary insights should be used as points of discussion and food for thought. This is why, in my reporting on scientific studies for Evie, I don’t make Pearl-esque assertions that misconstrue how humans actually operate. Correlations don’t always equal causations, and evolutionary insights can only serve as a fraction of our understanding of attraction and behavior. But, as cultural commentator and documentarian Lauren Southern so accurately said, red pillers are “attempting to turn understanding women into a science, how they work, how to control them, or just an outlet for bitterness over lost connection or lack thereof.” This new manosphere wouldn’t exist “without an obsession around women,” Southern stated. Anti-Feminist Women Need To Watch Out for This Sexist Trap Much of the advice pushed on women by red pill circles only further divides the sexes. “Women are not prepared for work. That’s fine. You need a man and you need to obey him and have his children. There’s no other way out of slavery. Let men struggle and war, we’re built for it. Get a rich man. Then add VALUE to his life so he doesn’t replace you. Do it while young and hot. Hurry,” Tate tweeted on October 21, 2023. Beyond extrapolating evolutionary psychology or behavioral ecology studies to the extreme, I don’t know where the manosphere gets this idea that women somehow aren’t prepared to work. Haven’t women always worked in some capacity? Maybe we weren’t breadwinning CEOs back in the day, but the notion that women shouldn’t work beyond domestic roles is truly a product of modern times. The idyllic vision of husband and wife was curated throughout the early to mid-20th century and romanticized through widely marketed, dreamy depictions of the fulfilled homemaker. Women in the upper Paleolithic were documented as having joined the hunt in some circumstances alongside the men. Archaeologists have found that some prehistoric women were so physically strong their upper arm strength was over a quarter stronger than today’s elite rowers who train for peak physical fitness. "They're ancient working moms," said Brigitte Holt, an anthropologist who discussed these archaeological findings in an interview with NPR, adding that these women were likely "hoeing, planting, harvesting, chopping wood, grinding grain and getting water – and all this while raising small children." Women in the Middle Ages in Europe were documented as being shopkeepers, midwives, blacksmiths, and even ironmongers. Before Islam, gender roles in ancient Mesopotamia were much more egalitarian to the extent that women in Sumer, for instance, could be a priest or a doctor, own real estate, and even act as a judge. We shouldn’t underestimate women’s contributions to the labor force simply because more modern societal structures have afforded us the luxury of less stressful work. What good does it do to unnecessarily stunt ourselves when we’ve got just as much brain power to perform specialized tasks as men? “No men do not need women outside of reproduction. Not true. Society would function fine. Men build the world. Women are meant to pass on culture. But now in 2023 women have ruined the culture,” Pearl tweeted on June 23, 2023. Again, all I’m gathering when I read these platitudes or watch their ragebait TikTok clips – like Pearl’s takes on women destroying men’s legacies, emasculating their husbands “every day,” or losing the ability to even find a “high value” man after hitting the so-called wall – is that these people somehow, magically know better than all us normies. Closing Thoughts Why disparage women for aging – as both sexes will? Why disparage men for wanting real love and companionship? This subsection of the manosphere that boils relationships down to a sexual transaction for the continuation of the human race is really bizarre. Marriage isn’t a death sentence for men or for women, no matter what Pearl, Tate, or their sycophants spread on social media. So, I can’t blame people for thinking that this messaging is meant to encourage men to go gay or just truly “go their own way.” submitted by Ur_Anemone to afterAWDTSG [link] [comments] |

2024.05.13 00:12 valonianfool Justification for the genocide of Amalek
I had an online friend who is a conservative Christian: they comforted me when I was going through a bad time so I considered them a friend, but I've always been uncomfortable with their views.
We've debated various topics over the years, and while rarely agreeing we were almost always able to reach a middle ground, but as of recently they've made statements which made me finally want to cut off contact with them for good.
Some days ago I entered into a debate with them over religion and science-they stated that they believe everything described in the bible is true, and that they would never accept god commanding someone to commit a sin, so I asked them about the passages where god commands the israelites to wipe out the amalekites and canaanites except for female virgins of reproductive age.
Since they define murder as a sin which is distinct from killing which is justified if in self-defense, I asked if god's commandment to kill all of the populations including the children, infants and even livestock counts as a command to murder.
At first they mentioned that there were later commandments not to interbreed with those groups, so it couldn't have been total extermination, which just seems like deflection because that's not what my question was about.
Their eventual reply was that instead of murder or self-defense the killings were execution-the amalekites had committed sins worthy of execution, for example adultery was a crime worthy of execution back in the day.
As for why infants who by definition are innocent were killed too, he said that group punishment was acceptable back then so its OK, and since they were under the age of accountability they would've gone to heaven anyway if judged righteous by god.
I feel the need to vent about this unpleasant experience here and I think that finding ppl who can roast what he said could be healing. So I want to ask for opinions on what this person said to justify wiping out the amalekites down to the infants.

2024.05.12 20:20 Algaeminds Betrayed by employer
was diagnosed this time last year after voluntarily entering inpatient. Everything since then has been so frustrating but also intensely hard. But this definitely has been the worst time of my life and I feel like you guys will at the very least understand cause I read the stuff you send here a lot even though I rarely post.
Got what I thought was my dream job. I do outdoor jobs which house me since it's the only way I can go out into nature most of the time on account of I can't drive. And pretty much immediately when I get here the housing is absolutely horrible, unmaintained and especially in my case horribly nerve wracking being in a room with 7 older men as a young trans woman.
Im sure a lot of you aren't surprised that people could spot my inability to hide my emotions. While I am pretty good at performing well at work regardless of emotions because working helps regulate me, my facial expressions and gestures are like night and day when it comes to how I portray emotions.
My manager called me into the office because she could tell I was distressed about something. She kindly said she is always there to talk and so in a very vulnerable state, i very very stupidly decide to confide my mental condition and current housing frustrations to my manager. My hope was to be moved to the alternative housing that the company has available for the same job which is meant for couples since they were unwilling to accommodate me in the female dorms. She takes it to the general manager and the next day GM comes to me with HR and they're giving me a mandatory flier for the company's 'reasonable accomodations' for bipolar. Guess what their generous therapy option is?
So I get told that in order to have a future with the company I am being required to accept the accommodation of therapy and specifically it MUST be through betterhelp, and it must be tied to the company. Betterhelp being the ubereats of therapy in an industry of course so regulated that all any therapist can do is reassuringly offer me worksheets for an hour straight every week. Mind you Betterhelp has also been implicated in selling off patient data (in a way which is legal certainly only for the fact that it hasn't been regulated... Anyway I say "no thanks" to that since, I do take medication and I have my own actually qualified psychiatrist. But they insist. They show me in the employee handbook where it is indeed stated that not accepting the company's "reasonable accomodations" is grounds for immediate termination.
So I say well okay let's reconsider this. But now suddenly since I hesitated they decide that I am being deceptive and now already made up their mind to terminate me. They gave me 24 hours to vacate.. on a Friday.. in a place with zero public transportation.. thanks for telling me you never ever gave a fuck.
Anyway now I'm literally LITERALLY homeless after only two weeks of work. Payday isnt til next Friday so I'm broke. and trapped on this shitty island until tomorrow. But it's whatever. I am just gonna go backpacking this summer instead. That's what I came here for so, fuck it right? Not gonna let this screw up my life more. But I just, really needed to get it off my chest. Thanks.
