In a world of digital connectivity, libraries are still here. Public institutions like libraries are important today, and in the future as community gathering places & education centers, and could help people in a new digital era.
Communities need a place to gather, learn, and participate in events. Libaries are perfect for all of that. In a calendar of events for Orland Park library (source B), there are events every day for families, toddlers, and teens, highlighting the need for libraries to stay in an age where people think that it will cease to exist. Libraries are also equally important for education. It used to be a place where the ruling class cou didn't yld go but Benjamin Franklin invented the idea of a lending library leading to educated masses, something that is important to a democracy (Source A). Libraries are important to students as well. College and high school students use libraries as study places due to their quiet nature and educational manner.
Contrary to what people think libraries will become, these spaces actually help people greatly. People from disadvantaged households, that is, households with low education and income, may not have a computer, internet, or funds to buy books and other material (Source C). While many of us may have no use for libraries, these households need them, as it might be integral to their education and work. Librarians also help people use technology; something that is very important so that these people are computer literate in the digital age. In a report published by research organization Pew Charitable Trust, it states that 43% of 16-17 year olds needed help from a librarian (Source D). If they didn't have a library, who might they have to ask for reliable help?
Governments and people see the change happening to libraries and information currently. In an ALA report, 23 states in America reduced funding for libraries (Source F). That could mean libraries might be reduced in size and scope which would be a mistake. Reducing funding for libraries could reduce the amount of people from the community from even entering a library, potentially costing some people's educational nd social well-being. In an article by Tech Crunch, the author states that libraries can't really change and modernize, and compared them to bookstores. That is just untrue as bookstores arent as important to communities as libraries are, and that libraries have changed, and can change again, adopting to a digital era.
Libraries are the backbone of education nin many communities. They serve as gathering places, help disadvantaged households get education and use technology, and are just good study places. Libraries change and it will adapt to a new digital era, bringing memories and education to a new generation.

I’ve been living in a house that is very haunted for the better part of 53 years. I guess you can say that, I grew up here. And lived here my entire life.
And I’ve made a happy home for my wife and daughter here as well. At least we try to make this a happy home. We’ve experienced things that are so bizarre you’d almost think that we were crazy for even talking about them.
Nevermind the things I’ve heard and seen in this house while growing up.
While I would love to talk about everything that has happened here, I would like to tell you about how it all started for me when I was seven years old. It's actually the very first incident that I encountered while living here.
The house was built in 1875. It’s been remodeled throughout the years to keep up with modern times, but it still rests on the very foundation it was built on.
This house… as I’m writing this, I can hear footsteps creaking above me on the second floor. This is an all day thing. But we’ve learned to live with it. While growing up here, and being the only child, my parents already knew about the house being haunted. But they tried sheltering me from it. Meaning, if I heard something strange, my father or mother would say something to the likes of…
“Oh honey, those damn pipes again. We need to call the plumber.”
Or if there were footsteps creaking on the floor boards they would blame the flooring for being very old. I would hear scratching all throughout the walls and ceilings. All sorts of strange and bizarre sounds.
But this incident, this day, changed everything. And I remember this day, or rather night, as if it happened yesterday.
It was around 11:00 at night. It was a school night. And I was asleep. But something woke me up. I heard a voice whisper in my right right ear…
“We can’t let them get away.”
My eyes slowly opened up and I laid there for a moment. I called out for both my mother and father and looked over at my bedroom door but it was shut. I flipped over to my side and fell back asleep.
I heard this voice loud and clear. I know I did. But I think my brain was telling me to ignore it. Well, that was just the beginning of it. Because a few moments later it decided to really stir things up with me…
“Boy… HELP THEM THEY’RE BURNING ALIVE!”
I jumped out of bed so rapidly and even peed myself as I ran to my parents bedroom. My parents both looked at each other and then looked at me like they knew something but didn’t want to tell me. They gave me the old mumbo jumbo and told me that I was having a bad dream. My mother got out of bed. Got me fresh pajamas and socks while I cleaned myself up.
Peeing yourself at seven years old isn’t fun. Especially when it’s a raspy old scary voice shouting that someone’s burning alive in your bedroom while you’re sleeping.
My mother asked if I wanted to sleep with her and my father in their bed after that. You bet your ass I did. I hopped in that bed quicker than a fox chasing a rabbit. I was a small boy for seven. And both of my parents were average sized too, so, I fit right in there.
Alright… Here is where it gets very, very scary. If this doesn’t scare the socks off of you I don’t know what will. And before I continue, the voice that I heard? We think it’s the original owner of the house. Without giving away too much information about my home, the very first owner of this home…
He was an evil man…
We’ve heard stories about him torturing animals, killing them, and then taxiderming them, scattering them all throughout the house like his own little museum of horror.
Throughout the years I would experience more voices, more scratching on the walls and ceilings. Eventually my parents wound up telling me that the house was haunted by a creepy man with an evil past. And we lived with it. We were never physically harmed by it. It was more of a nuisance than anything.
That all changed on the night I brought my wife home to begin a life here with me.
We’re high school sweethearts. So, she knows about this place. She stayed here overnight plenty of times before we got married. But on the night she moved in, it wasn’t happy at all.
I’ll never forget the hour and minute. It was 2:27 in the morning. We were both asleep. My wife woke up first because she felt something tugging on her arm. She then woke me up and told me what she felt. This was the first time in all the years anyone has ever been physically touched by this spirit. This had never happened before so it was quite a shock to me.
And after being awake for about a few minutes or so, our bedroom door slammed shut! Our blanket was pulled away from us and thrown across the room. And we heard heavy footsteps as if someone was walking across the roof!
It was as if the house was coming to life.
In all my years of living here, I have never seen this much activity. Yet alone in one single night.
After the blanket got pulled away from us and thrown across the room things finally seemed to calm down. And the entire house was ominously quiet.
Too quiet…
But then a dark black shadow decides to grace us with its presence by moving along the walls in the bedroom and fading into nothingness. My wife and I did not move from the bed during all of this. We were terror-stricken. And then a foul odor begins to come from underneath the bed followed by a sonorous growl that vibrated underneath us.
By this point it felt like something grave was about to happen and I had to do something. Or at least I had to try. I grabbed a hold of my wife’s hand and told her to be brave and to not fear this thing. Because that's what it wants. It wants to scare us out of our home and we can’t allow that to happen. But we mustard up the courage to face this evil spirit and began reciting the Lord’s Prayer.
The bedroom door slammed again and again, four times consecutively. With steady growls underneath the bed, but we stood our ground. Praying to the almighty to help and asking him to show this spirit to the light.
A raspy old voice then shouts from underneath the bed.
“Get out!… Leave my house!”
And I said…
“No! If you're stuck here like you’ve been all these years, then you’re going to have to learn to live with us. In peace or war. Because this is my house now. Not yours. You're dead! Leave already! Go! Go with God. And Go into the light.”
After 10 minutes of praying and arguing with this thing. It all just seemed to come to a pass. I wiped the tears of fear from my wife’s eyes and embraced her painful shivers.
I, too, was frozen over by the horror that leveled us during that night.
And nothing of that magnitude ever occurred again. And our home stood silent for a while. For a year to be exact. Which was very peaceful. The voices and scratching on the walls and ceilings, footsteps and disembodied voices eventually returned. But it doesn’t bother us at all. We pay it no mind.
Doesn’t bother my daughter. Not my wife nor I. We’ve just learned to live with it.
I know that must sound strange. But this is my home. Our home. And we intend to keep it that way.

I didn't realize how lucky I was to grow up in an urban and old walkable suburban community until me and my husband sold our first home and purchased a big MCmansion in an HOA community.
I went into a depression dealing with a crazy HOA (for instance the president decided one day she wanted ALL 5200 homes in our HOA to paint our homes the colors she liked or we would all get fined!!?) CRAZY B#+ch🤬. Using Google maps and drones to fly over our yards to find violations.
I lived in one of the better suburbs compared to what I read online, but the moment you leave the gated community it's an 8 lane stroad and parking lot target and winn Dixie big a$$ parking lot. There were parks that was empty 99.9 % of the time.
I didn't understand how I could be in this "nice" home in this "good" neighborhood and feel so sad. So I move there because I was pregnant and wanted to live somewhat closer to family. My baby not even 2 was already turning into an iPad kid and antisocial because literally nothing to F#$king do and no one to see but me. You can only play with the same toys but so much. So we would go to the park NOBODY WAS EVER THERE maybe one f$&king kid if we were lucky. My husband had to battle 1 1/2 of traffic morning and night. He was gone from 6-7am until 9 pm some nights. My baby would be sleep before he got home didn't see him for days.
My husband ended up crashing my car and I was TRAPPED for months. No car I the suburbs is a basically house arrest. I was going insane!!!!
I convinced my husband that renting out our home and moving closer to downtown in a 1 bd condo in an AMAZING walkable neighborhood was better.
BEST DECISION I EVER MADE!!!!!!!
I WALK to the library for FREE toddler events daily. My baby is socializing. He's so cute and deserved a be existence. Wanna go to the park???? NO PROBLEM!!! It's basically across the street. It's huge it's basically a town square. The neighborhood buildings are old and beautiful. The only thing that could rival it is like Norway or something. I have mom friends I see on a regular of ALL ethnicities and backgrounds. Mom's from France, Chicago, Ukraine..... I want a slice of pizza walk a few minutes BOOM a pizza!!! Want a fresh fruit smoothie BOOM 5 min walk... Wanna take a trolley and just sightsee!!? It's freeeee!!!! To the beach 15 min walk... Movie theater... Shopping.... 10min-30min walk 🥰

I had no idea how HOAs could be are monsters. So I was like maybe we can potentially change our zoning and I realized my HOA didn't even want your cousin living with you, no way they would let a cafe start up in our garage.

Had another amazing trip to Napa ! Some great places to visit that i would definitely recommend :
Spring mountain - some great older library wines , beautiful property, very peaceful.
Inglenook - great tour , really enjoyed walking around this property .
Hall - I would say this is a modern vineyard , great social space , random artwork on the grounds as well . Also great wine .
Caymus - was also amazing they wave their fee if you purchase your tasting amount in bottles . Our host was very knowledgeable and it was a very laid back tasting . Great outdoor seating as well .
Pine ridge also had some great wine but I would say the tables were too close To each other and there was limited shade from the sun .
We were really let down by Alpha omega the customer service was terrible . We always enjoy visiting this property because of the great wine . But our host seemed more focused on a group of younger women . Also very arrogant about his Napa knowledge .

Please critique this itinerary for a late August trip to Newfoundland! Debating dropping the stop in Twillingate to cut down on the driving and leave more time in St. Anthony area if it makes sense.
Main interests are photography, food, and hiking/wildlife. We will be with a toddler, so will try to limit the drive lengths as much as possible. For hiking we will be making use of our carrier, but can't do anything too crazy. Museums are good for rainy day backup...

In my youth, a few decades ago, I met an only boy a few years older than me, in his early twenties named Tyler at a coffee shop. He drove a blue wrangler and was smoking cigarettes in the village with a friend at the only coffee shop in the early foggy morning. I think I may have bummed a cigarette on my way out the door with my americano and began to make conversation. Tyler had just drove from Seattle and boasted of his time back to get his friend home to Carmel Valley. We started talking about music, my favorite band was Modest Mouse. His was some one I’ve never heard of. He was very cool. Plump but cool. He’s seen modest mouse on the Lonesome Crouded West tour. Brock drank whiskey out of a plastic water bottle. Rebel. Then he told me another story.
Tyler had gotten busted for something illegal which I’ve forgotten now, but had gone before a judge and sentenced to a lot of community service. More than 100 hours. I don’t remember what it was but it wasn’t anything serious. More like what a normal adolescent who was unlucky enough to get caught was issued. At the time he lived just north of San Francisco and was given options to what his services would be. Tyler chose trail maintenance. Tyler worked for weeks. It was summer and was home with his parents waking up at dawn, grabbing breakfast and lunch at the local Safeway before heading to the hills to clear trails for 10 hours. Going home exhausted.
One morning Tyler saw an old man outside the grocery store, looking very tired. It was close to 5am. He approached the old man and offered to buy him a sandwich. The old man said he would very much like a sandwich. Returning with the food the old man asked what Tyler was doing that morning and Tyler explained that he was maintaining a broken trail that was high in the mountains close by. The old man seemed interested in this answer and offered to help for another sandwich and some beer to which Tyler obliged even though alcohol was a violation of parole. But Tyler was a rebel and wasn’t directly supervised once on the trail he was working, so he got another sandwich and a few tall cans and rode away with the old man to the hills.
Tyler told me the old man took direction well and ran off with a few tools and worked all day. He made sure the man had done what he asked throughout the day and was pleasantly surprised to see he was a good worker. They took lunch, drank their beers, worked for a few more hours and at the end of the day, the two hiked back to the blue Jeep Wrangler and headed back.
Tyler asked the old man direction to where this seeming homeless man wanted to be dropped off. Expecting a bridge or over pass. The old man didn’t give an address but immediate signals, left here, right here, straight here. The house style was passing slowly got bigger. Gates more decorative. The cars that passed were nicer.
“This guy must have a nice camping spot” Tyler told me. His suspicion never alerting.
The old man pulled up to a gate with a touch pad. Pretty fancy in 2000. The old man pressed the code. The gate opened.
A long driveway. A big house in trees. The mad shows Tyler into his house. Tyler is astonished. It beautiful. The old man leads Tyler into a library, there are gold records on the wall. He studies a few and the old man gets settled, fiddling with things. Bits and bops.
All the records say: Tom Waits
Tyler looks at the man. The man stairs back with a smile as he opens a floor to ceiling cabinet full of liquor bottles.
“I hope you like whiskey” he says with a smile.
Tyler expresses that before this day he had listened to Tom waits but hadn’t seen or noticed a picture or the man. His recollection of the night that fallowed was also hazy. Or he didn’t think my reaction was merit enough to continue the story. He slept on the couch in the study and woke up at dawn to go work trails.
I never saw Tyler again.

I am visiting my parents for a few weeks in Gurnee. I was wondering if any of the nearby libraries have any toddler or kid play areas that I could take my toddler to? Also, do you guys have any other suggestions for indoor play areas?

Fair Warning, this is going to be a LONG post, but I will try to dilute it as much as possible.
About 12 years ago I left the world of retail (of which I have MANY stories) to begin a career in childcare. Some people prefer different titles, Nanny, Babysitter, Parents' Helper, Childcare Provider, etc. To be honest each of those titles are suitable in different situations.
The first family that I Nannied for went on for about 4 years, and then on again off again for another year. Through this family, I met "Wendy" and her family. Wendy went out of her way to be friendly with me, and would often ask me to babysit her kids (B5 and G1).
At one point, I had moved on to working with another family for a few months. Sadly, that ended due to the parents getting a divorce, and they moved further away.
Wendy found out that I was unemployed and asked that I Nanny for her kids. She was also pregnant with her 3rd at the time. I agreed at a slightly discounted rate because we were "friends". I realized too late that that was a HUGE mistake on my part.
Wendy's live in boyfriend "Cole" also had 3 kids from a previous relationship. B15, G8, and G6 lived with their mother. Yes, am aware of the closeness in age of Wendy and Cole' B5 and his G6. I chose to keep my mouth shut.
Now prepare yourselves for the Rollercoaster of emotions I dealt with with this family.
Initially, both Wendy and Cole were employed. I would come over 5 days a week for 8 to 10 hour days, depending upon whether Wendy got home on time. Here is where my discounted rate bit me in the butt.... $300 a week was still complained about. Wendy asked that I not leave Cole alone with their kids because he basically ignored them and refused to change diapers. I felt pretty icky about that, but agreed. Now I lived 45 minutes away without traffic. I would often leave my house early in anticipation of possible traffic. If I arrived early, I wasn't allowed in until she our alloted time of 7am. I didn't have a key, and would often be left waiting on the porch an extra 15 minutes past our time. If I knew I was too early, I parked around the corner and ate breakfast. Wendy and Cole both got very irritated if I wasn't their door precisely at 7 am. It was a headache that I chose to avoid.
Over the first month, I realized that G2 was emotionally abused by Wendy. She constantly said to or in front of the child how much she hated dealing with the wild child. How she wished G2 was more well behaved like B5. She even wrote unkind things on Facebook, asking someone to take her on the weekend while I was off.
This took a toll on poor G2, obviously. She would get violent with me first thing in the mornings : Hitting, kicking, biting, pulling my hair, throwing things at me, or what ever popped into her mind. Eventually, once Wendy left for work G2 would calm down and become an absolute delight.
When B5 started school, Wendy took a new job that allowed her to work from home at times. Those were not fun days! I asked if I could bring G2 to my house where I have an outdoor play area, a playroom, plenty of kid movies, crafts, books, music, and local playgrounds. At first the car rides were torture with G2 screaming bloody murder for at least half of the 45 minute drive. When she got used to the new routine, those drives became pleasant. Her violent tendencies disappeared when we were spending the days at my home. The drawback was that I also had to drive her home in time to get B5 off the bus.
During school breaks, I also had B5, and if they were visiting G8 and G6. B15 stayed at Wendy's house and just did his own thing. If you thought G2 was torture in toddler form, these two girls would have made Nanny McPhee grow a few more moles, a hunch back, and closed feet.
B5 would get a little bored, being that he was the only boy that was understandable. I purchased an array of boy friendlier toys to entertain him. I already had a lot of girl friendly toys either purchased or gifted from the first family that I had worked with. Of course I had plenty of gender neutral items too.
Wendy and Cole didn't give 2 sh*ts and a shave if the kids watched TV all day, went out to a playground or museum, or were driven 2 hours away, as long as I got them home on time. I easily spent an entire paycheck on activities, gas, food (which they didn't pack), and toys over 2 weeks watching all 4 kids. By the by, when asked for additional money when I did have all 4, Wendy not so politely informed me that the kids are entertain each other, so my job should be easier with all 4.
My husband and I discussed a few times whether I should look for something else. Inevitably the people pleaser in me actually felt guilty even considering it. Yup, I was apparently a glutton for punishment. Gratefully, my income was just extra, for an nice meal out occasionally, gifts for birthdays and holiday, extra hobbies, and basic groceries.
Just before Wendy gave birth to their new baby, she became unemployed. Logically, one would think this was my easy out. NOPE!! I became more of a Mother's Helper / Nanny. At this point Wendy and Cole were beginning to look for a larger house to rent. I did more walk through than I can count. She even asked me to tour a couple without her, and to bring G2 and B5 so she could get her nails done and take a nap. (Seriously, I toured houses on her list without her!)
As we spent more and more time together, I began to learn FAR FAR more about her bedroom life than I could ever desire. G2 and I spent much less time in the peace of my home, and way too much in Wendy's company. G2's behavior began to deteriorate slowly, causing Wendy to lose her temper with her far too easily. This completely broke my heart. I TRIED to redirect them both, and expressed my concern to Wendy. Of course, she then turned her anger towards me.
Wendy would openly discuss her theories about Cole in front of her kids. She claimed that he was cheating on her with his ex because he would shower immediately after seeing her to pick up or drop off the kids. He often made those drives directly after work though. Maybe he was cheating, maybe not. I honestly don't know.
Wendy also enjoyed gossiping about absolutely anybody. The parents of the first family that worked with were having marital issues. This was a favorite topic of hers. Wendy told me about every unkind word her mother uttered in her direction. The apple obviously didn't fall far from the tree here. I was told lots of personal information about people I didn't know. The gossip made me very uncomfortable. I told her that I would prefer we not discuss the lives of people who weren't around to speak on their own behalf. This fell on deaf ears.
I became quite used to her disapproval of my loose fitting jeans and T-shirts. Working with kids, I found my favorite cartoon prints were just as possible with my tiny charges. I NEVER wear makeup or heels because I simply don't want to. My dresses always have leggings under them because it make me feel less vulnerable. I never wear shorts or above the knee skirts/dresses. That's a ME thing, not religious or cultural. I find my "uniform" of choice is ideal for working with kids. Wendy informed me more than once that it embarrassed her to be seen in public with me. She often insisted that I wear something of hers if we had to go anywhere.
My husband enjoys photography, particularly long exposure which is done at night. He has a lot of photography friends of both genders, but his best friend is a female. He also enjoys concerts and kayaking, often with an ex from high school. (He graduated in 1997). I trust my husband and have no problem with him spending time with his friends. Enter Wendy's whispers of accusations. She often "jokingly" accused him of cheating on me with these female friends. I don't enjoy concerts, crowds, or being out late; so I support his doing with people who do. At least I know he with someone if something happens. I have bad knees, which make getting in and out of a kayak difficult. Why should that stop him? Again, I told her that I trust him and that I don't appreciate her accusations joke or not. This annoyed her because she doesn't trust Cole.
I know these are major red flag issues. I know how toxic being subjected to these comments is. I also know how difficult it would be on their kids if I left too soon. I knew they needed someone who wasn't emotionally cruel. I stayed for them.
My husband and I spent 2 of our weekends helping them pack and move to house that ended up 15 minutes from us. We were thanked by words, but that was the extent of the gratitude. Wendy's mother looked after the kids while we helped them move. This was complained about because I was already paid to watch the kids during the week. Insert eye roll here!! Her mom felt my husband should be willing to help them move while I watched the kids on the weekend for no extra pay. Either way, we were doing them a HUGE favor to begin with.
A family that I had briefly Nannied for prior to working for Wendy asked if I could help out every other Saturday. The dad (Nice Guy) traveled a lot for work leaving the Mom (Angelface) home alone with the kids. She just needed a day to run errands, work out, and just have time to herself. Angelface is one of the kindest women on this planet. When I did Nanny for them (2 days a week), she was in tears when she had to let me go. They couldn't justify the outgoing money at the time. She referred me to several friends. I am legitimately friend with this family, and still babysit sporadically.
Through a random discussion, I told Wendy about working with Angelface on every other Saturday. She began to tell me what to charge, how many hours to work, and what days to leave open for her just in case. Insert headache inducing eyerolls!
One Friday, Wendy's cousin arrived for a weekend visit with her baby. Wendy told me that because it was a holiday weekend I would not be needed until Tuesday. I double checked via text, and she confirmed that she and Cole were taking the kids to the beach with her cousin. Monday morning I got a call from a passed off Wendy asking where I am. I reminded her that she had told me that they would not need me. I even took a screen shot of our text. She said that Cole had decided to work Monday anyway so she was alone with HER kids. This pissed me off, so I lied. I told her that I was out of town with my mom and wouldn't be home until 5 or 6 pm. She went on about how much of an inconvenience it was to her, and I should have checked before going out of town. For the second time, I sent her a screenshot of my text verifying that I wasn't needed Monday. She abruptly ended the call saying to just be sure to be on time Tuesday. I had NEVER been late, but opted to mention that as we hung up.
Over time we worked out a new arrangement where I brought now G3 to my house 2 days a week, and we stayed there 3 days a week. My husband and I offered to let her and the kids stay with us, but she declined. Wendy even told me that since she was so sure Cole was cheating, she was going to find herself a side boyfriend to cheat with. I tried to talk her out of it, to no avail. This completely freaked me out. 2 small children and a soon to be crawling baby sat and played on and around that couch. I STRONGLY considered calling Child Pretective Services and the police. I quickly realized that if I did, they would know it was me. I regret it, but I feared their possible retaliation towards us.
Shortly after finding these thing Cole quit his job. For several months while I worked for them, they were both unemployed. Again, I thought it was an easy out. NOPE AGAIN! For another 3 months, they insisted that they couldn't take care of the house and kids without my help. Very often, I arrived to find now B6 fending for himself for breakfast and getting ready for school. He was told to wake up and unlock the door for me, but they went back to sleep. I was expected to keep the baby from crying, and to keep G3 quiet and entertained until they came downstairs. I often chose to simply take both to my house so we could play naturally. We had a crib, so this wasn't a problem for NB. G3 would just nap on the couch or my bed. When out of school B6 preferred this too. This really should have told Wendy and Cole something about their kids, but of course not.
FINALLY, I was informed after about a year of working for them, they could no longer justify paying me. At this point, I had often considered quitting anyway. I mainly stayed because my heart broke for the kids. However, based on her gossipy and judgmental nature ... not to mention my little 3 day weekend fail; I was concerned about what kind of reference Wendy would provide if I chose to quit.
So in 2019, I found myself happily unemployed. The timing here worked out beautifully because Angelface knew neighbors due to have their first baby in 2020. I ended up working for this lovely family until August of 2023. The mom (Joy) and the Dad (Mr. Cool) were such a relief to my entire mental and physical health. We became friends as well, and over time I told them about Wendy. Between Joy, Angelface, Mr. Cool, Nice Guy, my husband, and family I began to realize just hoe toxic Wendy really was to my mental health. My husband never liked her but understood my feelings towards the kids.
For almost a year Wendy would randomly call or FaceTime me .... more often than not while drunk. She would rave about how much she and the kids missed me. We would get together for a meal, and she had me over for a couple birthday parties for the kids. I found myself almost always being the only sober adult watching the kids as the adults partied. Wendy often went back to her gossiping, trash talking, and "jokes" about my husband spending time with women. She would offer underhanded compliments. "It's so nice to see you wearing a dress instead of those tacky T-shirts." You get the drift. She even INFORMED me that since her neighbor was pregnant I could quit my job with Joy and Mr. Cool. She had told her neighbor that I would work for her now, and since they were next door, I would watch her own kids too. I shut that down saying that I was quite happy working with Joy and Mr. Cool. I even lied about what they paid thinking it would detur her further. NOPE yet again. She said that I should quit anyway so her life would be easier with me around. Once more, I told her that wasn't going to happen.
AT LONG LAST, I am coming to the end of my tortuous endurment with Wendy.
A week later, she called and asked if I had quit yet. I said that I had no intention of leaving an "$800" a week job. (Not even close to that with my 3 day a week job, but she didn't need to know the truth.) She told me to let her know when I quit, then changed the subject towards gossiping about that first family and their problems. I told her that I don't feel comfortable gossiping about people who can't speak for themselves. That pissed her off, so she turned it on me again. She said of course I don't want to talk about them since my husband was cheating on me with 2 different women. I angrily corrected her. She has no reason to think my husband is cheating, and I trust him and our friends. Just because she thinks her boyfriend cheats, and she cheats, that doesn't mean everybody does. She then said we could talk when I calmed down and after I quit my job.
After hanging up, I proceeded to block Wendy on everything! Facebook, phone calls, texting, face timing, Instagram, and even Snapchat (which I hadn't used in over a year). I also blocked her mom, and any body that had been friendly simply because Wendy knew them and wanted me to have their information too. I gave her no warning at all. I was beyond passed off, and refused to be talked out of my very gratifying decision.
I told my husband, family, and friends that was now free of Wendy. Not a single person tried to tell me to make ammends. The only guilt that I feel is towards those poor kids. For once though, I put myself first. Joy and Angelface were both extremely supportive when I told them that I had Ghosted Wendy. Both even mentioned how proud they were of me for FINALLY truly stand-up for myself. They were NOT fans of Wendy!!!
I never ended up quitting my job with Joy and Mr. Cool inorder to babysit Wendy's neighbor. I also continued to babysit for Angelface and Nice Guy.
About 7 or 8 months ago, I ran into Wendy at a playground between our two homes. She was with now G5 and B2. I had Joy and Mr. Cool's daughter with me. I was polite, almost obscenely so. I was friendly towards the kids, who were stand off-ish. I offered to let Little Miss play with them, but they weren't interested. Little Miss wanted to do her own thing, so off we went to play. We left after only 15 minutes because Little Miss said "that lady" is scaring her.
That night, my husband got a Facebook message from Wendy. She described my cruelty towards her kids by ignoring them. She said that it was so hateful that I blocked her on everything after all she had done for us. This message went on and on. My husband left it unread for months before my morbid curiosity caused me to open the silly thing. We never responded, but instead he finally bl9cked her too.
Ok, if you read that bloody novel of a post, you are a ROCK STAR!! I don't have any regrets towards my eventual choice, except towards the kids. It breaks my heart knowing what kind of parents they are enduring. I often regret not calling CPS, but there isn't a shadow of doubt that would have retaliated .... most likely violently.
I did eventually get back in contact with that very first Nanny family. They had indeed broken up, but both are happier and healthier now. I warned them that Wendy enjoyed gossiping and spreading rumors about them. Neither were surprised, and both had broken contact with Wendy long ago. They supported my choice to break ties with her as well. Shocking, right!?!
I no longer work full time for Joy and Mr. Cool, as they wanted Little Miss to get used to being around more kids before starting school. I do still sporadically babysit for them and Angelface and Nice Guy though. The two couples have referred me to several other families in the neighborhood, so I stay pretty busy with much more sane individuals.
Maybe I was a jerk, and petty. I'm cool with being thought of that way towards Wendy. At least now, I have much kinder people in my life.
EDITED/UPDATE: It has come to my attention that some may feel unfulfilled on the petty revenge side. For this former doormat, removing myself as her very cheap childcare was my revenge. I realize that many may not feel it was enough, but at the time, it was a MAJOR achievement for me. I had worked 8 to 10 hours a day for 5 days a week to receive $300.
When "invited" to parties, I ended up providing free childcare while the other adults got drunk. I don't like the taste of alcohol or the feeling of being buzzed or drunk, so I don't partake. I feared what would happen to the ignored kids, so I found myself watching them.
I never had a lot of friends, so for a long time, I truly thought Wendy was my friend. It took conversations with my husband, my mom, Angelface, Joy, and others for me to see the reality of my situation.
Some may say this post is in fact gossiping about her. To a point, yes I will agree. I did change everybody's names though.
Ultimately, I have always questioned whether or not I was fair or did the right thing by Ghosting and blocking Wendy. I often second guess my choice; especially when thinking about those kids.
I have tried to be more alert about the people around me since this experience. I do still find myself being too nice and accepting of some ways in which I am treated. I have tried to build more boundaries though.

Fair Warning, this is going to be a LONG post, but I will try to dilute it as much as possible.
About 12 years ago I left the world of retail (of which I have MANY stories) to begin a career in childcare. Some people prefer different titles, Nanny, Babysitter, Parents' Helper, Childcare Provider, etc. To be honest each of those titles are suitable in different situations.
The first family that I Nannied for went on for about 4 years, and then on again off again for another year. Through this family, I met "Wendy" and her family. Wendy went out of her way to be friendly with me, and would often ask me to babysit her kids (B5 and G1).
At one point, I had moved on to working with another family for a few months. Sadly, that ended due to the parents getting a divorce, and they moved further away.
Wendy found out that I was unemployed and asked that I Nanny for her kids. She was also pregnant with her 3rd at the time. I agreed at a slightly discounted rate because we were "friends". I realized too late that that was a HUGE mistake on my part.
Wendy's live in boyfriend "Cole" also had 3 kids from a previous relationship. B15, G8, and G6 lived with their mother. Yes, am aware of the closeness in age of Wendy and Cole' B5 and his G6. I chose to keep my mouth shut.
Now prepare yourselves for the Rollercoaster of emotions I dealt with with this family.
Initially, both Wendy and Cole were employed. I would come over 5 days a week for 8 to 10 hour days, depending upon whether Wendy got home on time. Here is where my discounted rate bit me in the butt.... $300 a week was still complained about. Wendy asked that I not leave Cole alone with their kids because he basically ignored them and refused to change diapers. I felt pretty icky about that, but agreed. Now I lived 45 minutes away without traffic. I would often leave my house early in anticipation of possible traffic. If I arrived early, I wasn't allowed in until she our alloted time of 7am. I didn't have a key, and would often be left waiting on the porch an extra 15 minutes past our time. If I knew I was too early, I parked around the corner and ate breakfast. Wendy and Cole both got very irritated if I wasn't their door precisely at 7 am. It was a headache that I chose to avoid.
Over the first month, I realized that G2 was emotionally abused by Wendy. She constantly said to or in front of the child how much she hated dealing with the wild child. How she wished G2 was more well behaved like B5. She even wrote unkind things on Facebook, asking someone to take her on the weekend while I was off.
This took a toll on poor G2, obviously. She would get violent with me first thing in the mornings : Hitting, kicking, biting, pulling my hair, throwing things at me, or what ever popped into her mind. Eventually, once Wendy left for work G2 would calm down and become an absolute delight.
When B5 started school, Wendy took a new job that allowed her to work from home at times. Those were not fun days! I asked if I could bring G2 to my house where I have an outdoor play area, a playroom, plenty of kid movies, crafts, books, music, and local playgrounds. At first the car rides were torture with G2 screaming bloody murder for at least half of the 45 minute drive. When she got used to the new routine, those drives became pleasant. Her violent tendencies disappeared when we were spending the days at my home. The drawback was that I also had to drive her home in time to get B5 off the bus.
During school breaks, I also had B5, and if they were visiting G8 and G6. B15 stayed at Wendy's house and just did his own thing. If you thought G2 was torture in toddler form, these two girls would have made Nanny McPhee grow a few more moles, a hunch back, and closed feet.
B5 would get a little bored, being that he was the only boy that was understandable. I purchased an array of boy friendlier toys to entertain him. I already had a lot of girl friendly toys either purchased or gifted from the first family that I had worked with. Of course I had plenty of gender neutral items too.
Wendy and Cole didn't give 2 sh*ts and a shave if the kids watched TV all day, went out to a playground or museum, or were driven 2 hours away, as long as I got them home on time. I easily spent an entire paycheck on activities, gas, food (which they didn't pack), and toys over 2 weeks watching all 4 kids. By the by, when asked for additional money when I did have all 4, Wendy not so politely informed me that the kids are entertain each other, so my job should be easier with all 4.
My husband and I discussed a few times whether I should look for something else. Inevitably the people pleaser in me actually felt guilty even considering it. Yup, I was apparently a glutton for punishment. Gratefully, my income was just extra, for an nice meal out occasionally, gifts for birthdays and holiday, extra hobbies, and basic groceries.
Just before Wendy gave birth to their new baby, she became unemployed. Logically, one would think this was my easy out. NOPE!! I became more of a Mother's Helper / Nanny. At this point Wendy and Cole were beginning to look for a larger house to rent. I did more walk through than I can count. She even asked me to tour a couple without her, and to bring G2 and B5 so she could get her nails done and take a nap. (Seriously, I toured houses on her list without her!)
As we spent more and more time together, I began to learn FAR FAR more about her bedroom life than I could ever desire. G2 and I spent much less time in the peace of my home, and way too much in Wendy's company. G2's behavior began to deteriorate slowly, causing Wendy to lose her temper with her far too easily. This completely broke my heart. I TRIED to redirect them both, and expressed my concern to Wendy. Of course, she then turned her anger towards me.
Wendy would openly discuss her theories about Cole in front of her kids. She claimed that he was cheating on her with his ex because he would shower immediately after seeing her to pick up or drop off the kids. He often made those drives directly after work though. Maybe he was cheating, maybe not. I honestly don't know.
Wendy also enjoyed gossiping about absolutely anybody. The parents of the first family that worked with were having marital issues. This was a favorite topic of hers. Wendy told me about every unkind word her mother uttered in her direction. The apple obviously didn't fall far from the tree here. I was told lots of personal information about people I didn't know. The gossip made me very uncomfortable. I told her that I would prefer we not discuss the lives of people who weren't around to speak on their own behalf. This fell on deaf ears.
I became quite used to her disapproval of my loose fitting jeans and T-shirts. Working with kids, I found my favorite cartoon prints were just as possible with my tiny charges. I NEVER wear makeup or heels because I simply don't want to. My dresses always have leggings under them because it make me feel less vulnerable. I never wear shorts or above the knee skirts/dresses. That's a ME thing, not religious or cultural. I find my "uniform" of choice is ideal for working with kids. Wendy informed me more than once that it embarrassed her to be seen in public with me. She often insisted that I wear something of hers if we had to go anywhere.
My husband enjoys photography, particularly long exposure which is done at night. He has a lot of photography friends of both genders, but his best friend is a female. He also enjoys concerts and kayaking, often with an ex from high school. (He graduated in 1997). I trust my husband and have no problem with him spending time with his friends. Enter Wendy's whispers of accusations. She often "jokingly" accused him of cheating on me with these female friends. I don't enjoy concerts, crowds, or being out late; so I support his doing with people who do. At least I know he with someone if something happens. I have bad knees, which make getting in and out of a kayak difficult. Why should that stop him? Again, I told her that I trust him and that I don't appreciate her accusations joke or not. This annoyed her because she doesn't trust Cole.
I know these are major red flag issues. I know how toxic being subjected to these comments is. I also know how difficult it would be on their kids if I left too soon. I knew they needed someone who wasn't emotionally cruel. I stayed for them.
My husband and I spent 2 of our weekends helping them pack and move to house that ended up 15 minutes from us. We were thanked by words, but that was the extent of the gratitude. Wendy's mother looked after the kids while we helped them move. This was complained about because I was already paid to watch the kids during the week. Insert eye roll here!! Her mom felt my husband should be willing to help them move while I watched the kids on the weekend for no extra pay. Either way, we were doing them a HUGE favor to begin with.
A family that I had briefly Nannied for prior to working for Wendy asked if I could help out every other Saturday. The dad (Nice Guy) traveled a lot for work leaving the Mom (Angelface) home alone with the kids. She just needed a day to run errands, work out, and just have time to herself. I reminded her that she had told me that they would not need me. I even took a screen shot of our text. She said that Cole had decided to work Monday anyway so she was alone with HER kids. This pissed me off, so I lied. I told her that I was out of town with my mom and wouldn't be home until 5 or 6 pm. She went on about how much of an inconvenience it was to her, and I should have checked before going out of town. For the second time, I sent her a screenshot of my text verifying that I wasn't needed Monday. She abruptly ended the call saying to just be sure to be on time Tuesday. I had NEVER been late, but opted to mention that as we hung up.

I am visiting my parents for a few weeks in Gurnee. I was wondering if any of the nearby libraries have any toddler or kid play areas that I could take my toddler to? a Also, do you guys have any other suggestions for indoor play areas?

I am currently enrolled in an MLIS program (just started recently) and have two toddlers. As I think about how to make a librarian career work with parenting, I’m starting to have doubts. This is how I see my ideal career trajectory going, and I’m not sure if it’s realistic:
-Focus on getting my degree while my kids are young
-Get a job in a school library when they’re in elementary school. It would probably have to be a school library job to make it work with summer break/breaks throughout the year. I don’t have an education degree, so it would probably have to be a paraprofessional school library job, and I’m not sure how many of these are out there.
-Get a remote (possibly part-time) library job when my kids are older and able to have less supervision in the summer).
Basically, are there options for jobs with summers off and remote options that could work for parents who don’t want to do summer daycare for kids or enrolling them in a different summer camp each week? I’d really love to be able to work in libraries and bring in an income, but I don’t know if my expectations for this field are unrealistic. Should I give it up and do something like freelance writing/editing?

You CAN co-sleep and night wean! We went from waking to nurse every hour to 11 hours of no nursing in 3 nights!
I literally made an account just to share this story because I am floored at how well this worked and hope it gives someone the courage to try.
I still cuddle her to re-settle a few times a night, she’s not sleeping through totally unsupported. But it is a huge weight off to not be breastfeeding constantly at night! She is slowly needing less and less support through the night and is resettling herself a lot more.
Synopsis:
Fill them up with food and tire them out during the day.
Have a set bedtime routine.
At least a week before teach the idea “the sun is shining” and have a visual like a specific window in the bedroom.
Prep them mentally “soon we will only have milk when the sun is shining”.
Use a narrative with a character in a book or photos or drawings of your baby.
Use a stuffed animal to narrate/process the emotions/what’s happening to baby.
Use the same language over and over when they request milk and just hold strong!
Be sure to center your resolve and stay super calm and loving.
Support them to sleep however they need but keep repeating your “we’ll have milk when the sun is shining. I love you!” mantras to them.
Your baby understands a lot more than you think, they’re resilient, and they know you’re always there for them!
Background:
My 16-month old is what many would call a “high needs”, “sensitive”, “clingy” or “demanding” baby. She literally only slept in my arms or on top of me. Sometimes we’d get a two or three hour stretch but generally, she wanted a boob in her mouth every hour. I was really starting to feel the exhaustion here after 16 months of never sleeping more than 3 hours at a time.
I was SO AFRAID so start night weaning. She’s a stubborn baby. She was used to me responding every time she needed me. I was worried she’d feel betrayed. I was fully prepared for her to fight it and not sleep at all, since she’s already such a hard sleeper. I had snacks ready and imagined I’d be up for hours rocking and pacing in the living room like I was with a newborn haha.
(I had already tried to do the Elizabeth Pantley pull off method where you pull the boob out as they start to fall asleep, but it just made her angry and got us in a cycle of overtired crying. )
Preparation:
I prepped her a week in advance just teaching her what “the sun is shining” means, and she picked it up quickly! I pointed to the window a lot ”look! The sun is shining!” Made sure she associated it also with a specific window in the bedroom.
I ordered the book on Amazon “Sally weans from night nursing”. I didn’t really read the whole text to her, just used the pictures to explain like “the baby is sad and crying for lechita in her bed! But the mama says no baby, lechita is sleeping. I will pat your back. We will have lechita when the sun is shining!” You could make your own pictures too, the book was just easier for me.
Once she got the concept “the sun is shining”, I prepped her mentally, “in three days, lechita is sleeping at night. We’ll only have lechita when the sun is shining!”
Day 1:
Kept the reminders up all day “look the sun is shining! Tonight there is no more lechita in bed. Lechita will be sleeping. We will have lechita when the sun is shining.” We had a big day with the library, park, children’s museum. I wanted to really tire her out haha.
At night we did our usual bedtime routine but I pushed her to nurse a lot before we brushed teeth.
I made a big show of putting band aids on my nipples and a bra and shirt on. Saying “lechita is sleeping! No more lechita until the sun is shining!” She seemed concerned looking and lifting my shirt and touching them haha.
When we laid in bed she was definitely confused and frustrated. I stood up and swayed with her a bit to calm her down and then laid back down.
She fussed a little bit and tugged at my shirt but I kept saying “lechita is sleeping! No more lechita at night. I know it’s hard, I love you. I’ll pat your back. We will have lechita when the sun is shining.” She pointed at my boobs and at the window like she was getting it!
Then my baby started this, I can’t take credit for it, I just followed her lead. She took her Elmo doll and was pretending to make him nurse. So I took him off and said “you want lechita Elmo? Are you sad? Are you crying? I’m sorry! I know it’s hard! Lechita is sleeping! We will have lechita when the sun is shining!” I would pat Elmo’s back too. She seemed to process the change through Elmo so we did A LOT of that haha.
She fell asleep after 20 minutes cuddling next to my boob but no nursing! She woke up throughout the night every 2 hours but would resettle herself or go back to sleep with a few back pats and shushing. I actually comforted her maybe 3-4 times before she had milk 7 hours after falling asleep!
I was so surprised how well it went! She resettled so quickly throughout the night and only fussed, no crying! At dawn when I said “the sun is shining!” She quickly grabbed Elmo and went for the boob like “we did it together Buddy!”
Day 2:
Kinda the same story falling asleep with Elmo to process the emotions, the mantras, etc. She fell asleep after 30 minutes on top of me with me singing to her. Throughout the night she needed less support, I could just wrap my arms around her and she’d re-settle. I comforted her like that maybe 3-4 times, and she nursed after 7 hours just like night 1.
Day 3:
She was a little harder to get to sleep, maybe took 40 minutes, but never cried, just talking and rolling around and fussing a bit. Eventually she fell asleep on top of me. She had a good long stretch and then just needed some cuddling to re-settle maybe 3 times. This time I tried to push that early morning feed and just patted her back to sleep. She had her first nursing session 11 hours after bedtime this time!
In the morning she went at it so hard and my boobs were so engorged that she spit up a lot for basically the first time in her life! So I would be careful on that, maybe hand express before and take it easy.
Reflection:
I am kicking myself for waiting so long and being so scared to make this change! But maybe this was just the right time, she was old enough to understand what was happening, and I was firm in my resolve that it was time. I am so proud of baby and have so much more respect and trust that she can handle big changes! I hope this gives someone the courage to try!
I also want anyone struggling with a “hard” baby to know that they might just blossom into a super sweet, chill, independent, flexible toddler. I am slowly seeing that with my “hard” baby!

When you have a mildly sick toddler, what level of exposure do you have with the rest of the world?
For us, if they’re probably contagious like a cold but otherwise acting themselves, I’m probably avoiding communal play areas where they could get other kids sick (library, playgrounds, etc). But will still run out to do errands. (But obviously there’s people who still take their clearly contagious kids to these spaces because that’s where my kid keeps picking up these colds hahaha)
If they’re on the very tail end of something, and likely not very contagious, we’ll go about our normal lives.
If they’re not feeling themselves (tired, fever, etc), we obviously stay home and rest.
I’m sure there’s a spectrum of opinions here, what do you do?

Hi all, question about interacting with other babies and parents. I have a 9-month-old and I have experience nannying both infants and toddlers and teaching Montessori early childhood education (ages 2-4.) We go to several baby activities (library store time, music class, daycare meet-ups) and now some play dates. In safe locations, my philosophy with managing children’s behavior uor is basically, “Eh, they’re learning, they’ll work it out,” with lots of pre-and post- discussions about what’s good behavior, and immediate physical removal and consequences for anything truly hurtful or dangerous. So, the Montessori philosophy or other strategies to promote independence.
In our recent play times with other babies, they’ll often crawl toward my girl and start touching her or trying to take the toys she’s playing with, and the parent will go, “Oh no! We don’t do that!” and stop them. And I’m sitting there thinking like, it’s fine! Kids are gonna be kids! There’s a million toys here, she’ll grab a new one, or she’ll try to use age-appropriate skills to get that toy back. And I’m fine with other babies grabbing at her— nothing is vindictive yet, they’re not going to seriously hurt her, and she grabs at me all day, I’m looking forward to her learning that pinches hurt others’ bodies.
Is something like, “It’s okay, they need to learn how to play with others,” okay? Should I say something when we get close to another baby like, “Hi, I’m happy to let them play and work things out as long as they’re not too rough”? But I also don’t want other moms to bring their kids over and I look like I’m a lazy weirdo yelling like, “THEY’LL GET HURT AND IT’S FINE, SLAP SOME DIRT ON IT, MY KID IS ALLOWED TO STEAL TOYS.”
Any advice? Parents of older kids, how have you navigated this? Also, if you’re gonna comment, “You’re overthinking this!” yep, I know that’s probably true, I overthink a lot.

Hi! Call me V for now, I'm 23, an engineering student in Philly, originally from northern NJ. tbh, my luck hasn't been very good these past few weeks with a bunch of my critical stuff breaking at the same time, so maybe someone here can be the good luck that I need?
I'm a natural baritone/bass in speaking voice, example here. 5'10", 235lb or somewhere thereabouts, South Asian/European heritage, bisexual. Fairly light skin tone, and you can see my face here. I've got a slightly stocky build, perfect for cuddles and late night snuggling. My chest doubles as a convenient pillow when needed. I'm finishing up my bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering & Manufacturing Technology currently, I've been at my current school for almost 5 years, and I should be graduating in 2026 if everything goes to plan.
I like to say that I'm kind of a creme brulee as a person. I have a shell, but once that shell's cracked, I'm as sweet as can be on the inside. I've been called a loverboy before, and I can't say that's wrong. I'm fiercely loyal to my partner, and I am also a decent baker, so maybe I can bake you some of my own cookies one day! I've been a car guy since I was a tiny young boy, to be frank one of my dream cars is a C2 Corvette drop-top with an LS or LT swap. I deal a lot with tech as a hobby, everything from building my own systems to doing high-end commissioned system builds for private clients. I do have a specialty in small form factor systems, being that I have one on my desk right now in a Terra case.
My music taste is pretty varied. My main library on Amazon Music has people like Post Malone, The Weeknd, Florida Georgia Line, plenty of Taylor Swift, Lil Nas X, Avicii, Marshmello, Billy Joel, Elton John, & S3RL. I even listen to a good amount of Sabaton when I'm in the mood for some power metal. My biggest pastime though is photography. Living in Philly taught me how to do night urban photography really well, and I pride myself on my work. I'd be more than happy to share some of my shots if you're into that. The downside of this is that I use my mirrorless Sony as a webcam because I can't stand the crappy quality of typical webcams. I also do mountain biking, hiking, and camping when I get the time and when my damn bike doesn't break.
I love doing random dates. Stuff like a trip to Ikea and pretending we have a home to shop for, doing a tour of parks in the city, going to a hobby shop and having fun for a few hours, movie nights with snacks we found on allrecipes, stuff like that. I'll do a restaurant date without issue, I guess I'm just more of a nontraditional guy.
My ideal partner would be someone kind, loving, understanding, and open. I to have a fair bit of the 'tism, in addition to a few other things, so having someone who's understanding of those things would be a huge plus. I am bisexual, though as of late the guys that I've talked to haven't been very good people. I'm looking primarily for a woman here, but I guess femboys & femme-leaning guys are welcome too. I have always had a soft spot for the girls that love going hiking and camping with me, and especially ones that also know their way around power tools.
