2024.05.14 22:21 An0nym355 So much discourse on here has been about perplexing complaints, disappointment and weird nitpicks … is that what film discussion has devolved into? Can we discuss the good that is actually there onscreen, cool things and moments and potential of the movie …

So much discourse on here has been about perplexing complaints, disappointment and weird nitpicks … is that what film discussion has devolved into? Can we discuss the good that is actually there onscreen, cool things and moments and potential of the movie …
This is a bit of a summary of comments I’ve made on others repetitive posts, but, truly people’s reactions to this movie are so odd.
This is a solid franchise installment. It is not enslaved to the previous installments. It explores new characters, new scenarios, new concepts, and a new adventure tone. It is well made and directed, with good characters and story.
I saw one comment dismiss this movie as not good and “just CG” and treat it like a transformers movie? Ridiculous. Once the complainers and nit pickers move on from whatever dark gritty depressing Caesar sequel was in their mind, (I love those three, but they can’t and shouldn’t all be the same) and disentangle what they expected or imagined with whats actually there to enjoy onscreen, I hope they don’t dismiss something as quality as this so quickly.
Most franchise installments are garbage, this is actually good, and does what a table reset sequel should do, and people are like “whhhaaaa no Caesar”, “whaaa why isn’t Proximus Grand Admiral Thrawn”, “whaaaa why isn’t Noa Rambo?”… “I am an expert on rust and oxidation in worlds of talking apes” …
I really enjoyed it. Do I think it’s as transcendent or as quality as Dawn? No. But I also don’t need or expect every installment in a franchise to top the last or be some iteration of just like the last or to get more and more serious and dark. Quite the contrary, I was glad this had a whole different tone than War, which while I respect its incredible filmmaking, was pretty serious and grimdark.
I enjoy exploring new potential and characters and expanding the world and scenarios. The filmmaking was good, each story beat led to the next and the scenes were built in an immersive way. These characters are not Caesar, they are different. I am perplexed by a group of people who supposedly enjoy the franchise setting their phasers for complain instead of enjoy.
Another common comment: Not as good as Dawn. Why does it have to be one or the other? I doubt we EVER get an installment as good as Dawn, since no franchise EVER gets an installment as good as Dawn. But that reductive view is not the point of a franchise and not the point of film discussion for anything besides twelve year olds. The point of a franchise is to continue in an enjoyable entertainment world full of potential. Is every Star Wars movie not as good as Empire a failure? No. Is every Bond movie not as good as Goldfinger or Casino Royale a failure? No. Is every Mission Impossible not as good as Fallout a failure? No. Cheeseburgers can be good, AND steaks can be good. Life is not one big YouTube ranking video, otherwise you wouldn’t enjoy anything.
Some fun things we CAN discuss :
How do we work toward ending at the 68 original? The Nevada bunker humans, will they launch a nuke and California will sink into the ocean and we will come to realize that Statue of Liberty is the one from New York New York hotel in Vegas? LOL.
Will Raka learn more about Caesar, and come back to Noa and say : you didn’t realize you were his lineage with those eyes and that mark on your chest? Did you get picked up by an eagle as a baby and get dropped with your adopted parents in Eagle Clan?
With Mae: I feel we are being shown the best and worst of humanity and life at the same time. Humans got in this mess by trying to use technology to manipulate nature. Noa and his clan (interesting to consider why they are a separate offshoot) live in harmony with nature and the Eagles. They eventually win through this harmony.
Mae shows the best and worst of humanity, she and they are survivors and will do anything to survive, she uses the good climbers to reach her goal (perhaps manipulating all events from the beginning to get Noa and his friends there and use them) She will kill her own kind. She and the humans are over reliant on technology to survive.
She doesn’t like seeing Noa able to fix the cattle prods and even perhaps plans to kill him because he’s too smart, as she’s willing to kill her own kind for the apes to not have technology. But Noa reminds her that she was saved by Raka and kindness. And that stays her hand.
Also at the ending the question lingers: Can humans live at peace with those that are different than them, without trying to dominate them? The ending of Rise was a good setup, but also very open ended. As was Dawn. This seems in line with those endings.
Maybe the point and message of the movie is to co-exist, to live in harmony with nature, to not try and dominate others or bend nature or others to our will, to not depend on technology too much, and instead embrace nature and coexist as eagle clan does with the eagles. Discussing and figuring out what the film actually says as made by competent professionals is more enjoyable than instead discussing what you wanted it to say in the dark revenge teenage coloring book of your imagination where all movies are grimdark and the same.
Can we have some discussion instead of just complaints?

2024.05.14 21:02 Ok_Tea_3431 I 28f and my bf 27m are I in a codependent relationship and he doesn’t seem to be trying to change things?

Posting here because I need help/advice. I 28f have been with my bf 27m for 5 years now. My bf has difficulty holding down jobs. He was always looking for something better which was fine. However last year he quit his job and took on drinking and taking edibles daily. It’s embarrassing to admit but I stayed thru it all. He used insta cart and doordash to make his monthly bills but it’s not enough. I’ll pitch I here and there to help with his car payment. I’ll break down in bullet points bc i don’t know how else to tell my story.
Holidays: For Christmas I bought his family gifts and had him say it was from both of us. I knew they were getting us gifts and I didn’t want to get something without giving them something?? None of my family knows how bad it is. I’m really close to them and I just brush things off. I lied and told them he finally found a job but he hasn’t. I didn’t get a Christmas gift. But I gave him money. He took me to a steak house for my birthday. Paid for it. Then asked I pay back for my meal bc he miscalculated and needed the money. He did buy me flowers for Valentine’s Day. I bought us an expensive dinner for his bday. I will admit I like a certain type of lifestyle even if I can’t afford it so I may overspend on things.
Addiction: Recently he lost his wallet which meant no Id which meant he couldn’t go to the dispensary or buy alcohol. He ended up finding his wallet but I offered to hold onto his id. It was going well but one day I left an expired id with him so he could buy a beer. I left and came back 24hrs later and he was drunk at 5pm. He gets overly emotional and depressed when he’s drunk and I don’t know what to do other than comfort him. Before I would say I was going to storm off or leave him and that would send him into a deeper spiral so now I nod and try to appease him.
Credit card debt: I’ve been swiping my card for food and drinks for both of us. He uses my car for DoorDash which means I pay for the gas. Before he quit his job (he had been unemployed for 3 months before his most recent job) he really wanted and oled tv and asked I put it on my card and he would pay me back. He made payments for the three months that he was employed then stopped. He ended up selling the tv it was $1,100 he kept the money to pay his bills and buy weed. I finished paying off the card myself. I’m in such a hole borrowing money in hopes I can cover my ass until the next paycheck. I got a part time job im starting soon which should help me a lot. I make a decent wage.
Financially irresponsible: we went on a trip to the casino (he was still employed at this time) I booked the hotel on my credit card. He ended up winning $5,000!!! The first night there. Want to guess what he did next??? He took copious amounts of edibles and blew $3,000 of it on more gambling. He won another $1,000 and also blew that. With the remainder he bought a pc AND I had to beg him to pay me for his half of the hotel room. He did pay for dinners and lunch while we stayed there.
Promises: he says he’ll pay me back. I’ve helped him make his car payments. I help him with food. He says things are going to change. He paints this really pretty picture that I so badly want to be true. But it’s MAY 2024. He quit his job June 2023. He promised me Christmas he promised me my birthday gifts. All which fell flat. And now I just feel like a fool. He says once he starts working he’ll pay me back.
I’ve been helping him apply to place none call him back. He also can’t pass a drug test currently.
Relationship: aside from the money I think we’re okay? We trust each other we love each other. When we’re together we’re always laughing and having a good time. We get along. On weekends we take turns on who gets to pick the movie. He’ll watch twilight and mean girls with me.
The only thing is when he is in withdrawal or hungover he becomes easily agitated and needs space to calm down. The worst he’s done is raise his voice and so do I. Normally he just needs to walk it off or blow off the steam and things get better. He’ll hyper fixate on something I did and call me out on it. I’ll apologize but he won’t let off of it when he gets like that there is nothing I can say to change things. In my mind if I did something wrong I get it I’m sorry but there’s nothing I can do to change it? But if he lies or does something he brushes it off and gets upset with me for being upset at his lying?! He’s a terrible texter and never answers his phone. If I needed immediate help I’d be out of luck. But I always have to be there for him. Let’s say he’s having a bad day he needs me there and wants me there. I have to drop everything and if I don’t he feels bad and guilt trips me.
In the end what I would like to see is him get clean and sober find a good job so we can buy a house have a family. Right now he is on an upswing where he makes his promises that things will get better and things will change. If things crash again and he fails to find a job I will have no choice but to leave even if I don’t want to. Go ahead and roast me bc I know I should know better but I can’t bring myself to leave him.

2024.05.14 20:48 99-KiloLima Data points on successful Casino Comp offers

I received a promotional email from Virgin Voyages a few weeks ago that mentioned status and comp offer matches. The email contained a link to fill out a form for review, where you would also upload evidence of your status or comp offers, and stated someone from Virgin Voyages would get back to me within 48-72 business hours.
I’m no “high roller” by any means, but because I go to Vegas and/or the MGM National Harbor 1-3 times a year, I periodically receive comp offers for free hotel stays. So I uploaded screenshots of 3-4 night free hotel comps at MGM properties as well as The Cosmopolitan in Vegas, thinking I might get a discount on a VV cruise, but after 7 days, I still have not received even a “you didn’t qualify” email.
What’s been everyone else’s experience with Virgin Voyages’s status/comp match (“Casino Player Inquiry”)? I have not been on a cruise with VV before but would like to. The form asked for a specific Voyage, so I entered one of the Carribean cruises in February. Not sure if either that makes a big difference or not.

2024.05.14 19:20 flyver67 Where do you even start? My mom has gone totally off the deep end. She is refusing to take care of herself because the world is going to hell. I asked how she was today and got the below. Not sure how I will take care of her when she can’t take care of herself.

“The country that I have spent nearly 76 years in and that I love is no longer here. I 100% put the blame on the pathetic 'thing' that is 'leading' our country. He only gives a shit about himself and power. The MINUTE he became President, he shut down the Keystone Pipeline and opened the border. More than ten million illegals from all over the world have come through the border, not legally at border crossings, but wherever they could cut fence, take down the wall, cut through razor wire, ANY WAY THEY COULD GET IN! The border patrol 'process them' except for God knows how many 'gotaways' that get in in the dead of night. ALL of the illegals are given cell phones and money. Crime is at an all time high. Illegals are robbing and killing people in New York City almost daily. ALL of the liberal states, as in California, have a huge homeless population with people everywhere, shitting all over the place. Liberal Cities, New York included are putting the illegals up in 5 star hotels, which they destroy. They give them money, free food, whatever they need, while the people just trying to get by are being attacked and killed, even in Time Square, almost daily. People are leaving California and New York in droves, mostly moving to Florida. Liberal States have defunded their police and most have a no bail policy. So, illegals who rob and beat and kill, are being arrested and then let back out. Normally, they go right back out and do it again. Migrants are sleeping at O'Hare airport and other airports. Residents are being asked to house illegals for $500 a month. Illegals are getting free health care, free everything while we have people that cannot afford to buy food. Over 45K in Chinese Nationals (all men) have been allowed in at the border. China does not just let military age men leave of their own accord. Wonder what they are going to do? China is buying up thousands of acres in the U.S., normally around military bases, including Oklahoma and nobody can stop it. The FBI director is warning everyone in the U.S. that all information points to Iran, Syria, etc., ARE planning on terror attacks in the U.S. Great! Biden has screwed Israel and demanded that they have a cease fire because they are killing too many people. He never mentions the innocent people that were killed in Israel on October 7th, bragging about putting babies in ovens and cutting off their heads. Israel is our biggest ally in the middle East. There are HUGE protests all over the U.S. that are against Israel. Practically EVERY college in the U.S. has protesters that basically want every Jew dead. Yale, Harvard, all of those kind of schools, along with many, many more colleges. Professors have been fired, as well as the President of Harvard resigned in January because of her condemnation of Jews, and so on and so on. As a person, Trump is not my favorite person, BUT EVERYTHING was better than it had been in a long, long time when he was President. The MINUTE Biden got in, he started undoing everything that Trump had done....and the deterioration began and continues. I could go on and type all night, but I am just telling you why I hate so much right now, but mostly our ass wipe 'leader' and all of the Democrats who support them. An illegal was caught at the Walmart in Wagoner trying to get in a woman's trunk, in WALMART! Biden promises he will raise taxes, especially on the 'rich.' They need to pay their 'fair share' even though the top 1% of taxpayers in the U.S. 45.8% of the income taxes paid, even though they only earn about 25% of the income. The top 1% of taxpayers accounted for more income taxes than the bottom 90%....and asshole wants them to pay their fair share! Illegals are breaking into homes, making up a fake lease and then squatting in the houses. Guess who has the rights? It is not the homeowners! Squatters in NYC had broken into a woman's home who had just died. Her daughter went to check on the house and was killed by two illegal squatters and put in a bag. She was found by her son. Boeing planes are having huge problems, to the point that the head of Boeing and another person resigned. While descending, a door in the exit row blew off. It had never had any bolts in it. There have been fires in engines, tires falling off right after taking off, pieces just falling off of the planes and others that I can't remember. It seems that is a weekly thing. Ask me if I would get on a plane right now, especially a Boeing, which the majority are. I could go on and on and on, but I am going to bed. Overall, prices on everything are up around 20%. People can't buy the food they need. Gas is back up. Illegals are taking over the schools to where citizens can't go or are afraid to. I am glad I am old. Going to bed. Love you guys. Aren't you glad I 'shared?' “

2024.05.14 18:33 Mad__Lib How do I stop being resentful of a low-effort proposal after 12 years?

I (35F) and my fiance (46M) just got engaged two days ago.
**Backstory: we have been together for 12 years. We have raised eachother's kids together. I call him my husband instead of boyfriend when I introduce him to people because boyfriend is such a lowly term to describe what we have been through. For the first about 5 years of our relationship, it was really toxic, we broke up for a couple months and my kids and I moved to another city. We got back together and changed so much to be better and are a very strong couple. Just giving you context of why he didn't propose in first few years as is pretty standard. We have been wanting to get engaged for years, didn't have the money to actually have a wedding and all that until the last year or so when I got a really good job.
For more context, on our 10th anniversary in Miami, I cried at the end because I really thought he would propose there, he could have chosen any pretty area really. When I finally said something to him, he said he felt terrible because he thought my expectations were so high that I would have to go to Italy or Paris for a proposal (lmao I have never close to indicated that). I laughed because there would never be a time we would do that until after our high school aged kids graduate, so that was really crazy he even thought that was a good idea or timeline. I told him all I care about is that he put EFFORT into it, that it is special and meaningful. In my brain, it was obvious, on the waterfront where we met by our house would be a great easy and free idea.
This last weekend was our 12th anniversary. I had hopes I guess but I'm so used to it not happening that I really did not think he was going to propose. More backstory: he is not a planner whatsoever. He is content living the same life and doing nothing more, no major goals, no aspirations, he does NOT plan or surprise or spearhead anything, I do it all. He is a good, stable, and caring man but I do have already built resentment that he #1 had taken 12 years to propose and #2, he just never does anything unless I hold his hand through exactly what to do. I lead everything and this was the one thing that he had to do on his own. Also, we were at the mall about 8 months ago and looked at rings, I showed him the very simple ring, the saleswoman wrote everything down for him.
The Proposal We had planned that Saturday night in Vegas we would go out for our anniversary dinner. But of course the planning was left to me. I chose Alexxa's at the bottom of the eiffel tower, on the terrace, directly looking at the Bellagio fountains. After dinner, we went in the casino. I was like hey look, you can go up to the viewing deck, then I was like oh nvm you have to buy a ticket and everything. We walked back to the hotel, he wanted to get froyo so we got that and went back to the hotel. As I am about to sit down to eat my froyo, bro says "I've been trying to do this all day" or something like that and then says will you marry me, and gives me the ring. Of course I said yes but I said a lot of "you're messing with me" at first because I thought it was a joke until I saw the ring.
It took everything within me that night to not cry and not ruin the one engagement night I will ever have. Since then, I have been filled with sadness, resentment and it's just triggering me a lot about things I already get upset about in our relationship like how I'm always disappointed if he doesn't do something or does it badly IMO. I've told him very nicely about all of this and he feels terrible. I don't want to be mean to him, I know he was nervous but he planned NOTHING. He told me that his "driving force was the element of surprise". Girl what? So he chose to wing it in order for me to be surprised after 12 years rather than put thought, effort and planning to do something special or sentimental. Would have been nice to have at least a single picture as well but whatever. I think this is hitting me so hard because it's such an indication of a bigger problem that I already feel. I'm not ever going to leave him over it but I don't know how to stop resenting him for this. How did he go from "Paris or Italy" to hotel room? Lol. Also, my ring is nothing like we discussed. Beautiful ring but it's falling off my finger, the setting for the center stone is about 3/4 inch high for what reason I have no idea so it just adds to how I already feel, can this man do anything without me?
Tldr; we've been together for 12 years, he proposed in a hotel room with not an ounce of planning. How do I stop resenting him and move forward?

2024.05.14 04:08 Immediate_Goal_1749 Is there something I'm missing?

AITA for despising my MIL?
My mother in law does not like me, my boyfriend of 4 years has blinders on because everyone else can see it, even his mom's sister. To begin, my boyfriend was hesitant about introducing me to her "because she doesn't like blondes". Her reason being, her now dead ex husband cheated on her with a blonde. She has tried on multiple times to find my boyfriend a new girlfriend, even by trying to drag him to a funeral. She will constantly bring up his past relationships and how they were so sweet and cute and apparently still in contact with one of them. I've brought up her behavior to the boyfriend and he's talked to her about it and she stated that I was insecure. I'm not insecure, just upset about the lack if respect towards me. I usually don't care how much someone spends on me, but the fact is I know she has money, and decides to go to the casinos quite often and she will go get her "free" prizes. Every year, I've received a gift under $10 for every holiday. I get that it's the thought that counts, and she claims she doesn't have money. But knowing that she gives everyone else $50 gift cards, and offers them the free rooms at the hotels, I know I've been lied to and I feel like my boyfriend also gets jipped by his mom while his brother who never has to work gets a free home, while we are literally struggling to even save for a down payment to buy a home.

2024.05.13 19:32 Epididymis23 US West Coast Roadtrip Final 18-day Itinerary

Hi All!
My wife and me will leave to the US from Europe for a West Coast Roadtrip and I have a 95% finalised itinerary but if there are any recommended activities that I am missing or if I packed too much in a day, please advise. Campgrounds and all of the activities which need reservations are already reserved. Specialty coffee places and food tips are very welcome, we are not picky at all but love to eat basically anything from Five Guys to gourmet restaurants.
Day 1 - Arrive at 17:30 in San Francisco airport and take our rental car, drive to Pacifica Taco Bell for dinner, shop in Walmart or any other chain for roadtrip groceries and sleep in the Inn at Moss Landing, heading down there on Highway 1
Day 2 - Whale watch with blue ocean whale watching at 9 a.m. Head down to Monterey after that for lunch, check out Carmel by the Sea and because of the road closure at Big Sur head down to our next accomodation in Cambria for the evening
Day 3 - Leave in the morning, check out Hearst Castle and elephant seal watch and San Simeone, coffee at Scout coffee in San Luis Obispo, fast food for lunch, check out Morro Bay and Montana de Oro or Pismo beach and drive to Los Angeles in the evening to the hotel.
Day 4 - Universal Studio in the morning, mainly Harry Potter world and after we are finished there, check out the sunset at Griffith Observatorium and walk to Vista or Los Feliz Cinema to watch a classic movie and if there is time go to a bar for cocktails in the proximity.
Day 5 - Check out Santa Monica Pier, go down to Sports Basement to pick up car camping rentals (inflatable bed, trekking poles, sleeping bag) and drive to Joshua Tree campground for a late afternoon, evening hike and sleep in the campground.
Day 6 - Wake up early and do another hike in the morning, after that drive to Las Vegas hotel. Check out the Strip and then put it all on red in the hotel casino? We have a room in a great hotel so this may be a more relaxing afternoon / day.
Day 7 - Leave LV in the morning and drive through or to Valley of Fire State Park for a little while and arrive in Zion National Park in the afternoon to do a very short hike (Watchman Trail).
Day 8 - Scout Lookout trip and The Narrows in Zion NP in the morning and use the shuttle back, either to the car or if we have time and energy to see the Emerald Pools. Leave late and arrive to our Page accomodation late in the evening
Day 9 - Head to the Horseshoe Bend very early to see the sunrise (it is really close from our airbnb). Booked Antalope Canyon tour for early afternoon. Drive to Grand Canyon Mather campground in the afternoon, if possible catch the sunset there and sleep in the campground.
Day 10 - Start in the morning, hike the South Kaibab trail to Cedar Ridge or Skeleton Point depending on the weather and our energy level. Long drive in the afternoon to Death Valley Furnace Creek campground and arrive there in the evening for sleep and stargazing.
Day 11 - This seems like a really exhausting day but will have a rest day after this. Wake up really early and drive to Sequoia National Park, have a shorter hike (Moro rock trail or eagle viewpoint) and maybe the General Sherman Tree. In the afternoon drive to a hotel in Oakhurst for the night.
Day 12 - Relax in the hotel, maybe check out Bass Lake in the vicinity? If we are not tired, which I think we will be then maybe hike in Yosemite that day, too.
Day 13 - Lower Pines campground reservation, all-day hike. Recommendation for hikes? Sleep in the campground.
Day 14 - Whole day Yosemite. Recommendation for all day hikes? Sleep in the campground.
Day 15 - Multiple options, do not know which would be the best or most viable option:
  1. Hike again in Yosemite all day and drive to San Francisco hotel late in the afternoon
  2. Maybe a short hike in Yosemite and drive to Lake Tahoe, Emerald bay for a short time and after that drive to San Francisco hotel for the night
  3. Maybe a short hike in Yosemite and drive to Big Sur as the road closures will be lifted by then, check out Pfeiffer Falls for a short time and drive back to San Francisco hotel
Day 16 - Relaxing days ahead, chill sightseeing in SF, Golden Gate Park and mission district maybe fishermans wharf. Go to a bar for cocktails.
Day 17 - Alcatraz day tour, more sightseeing in SF, recommendations are welcome. Dinner in State Bird Provisions for our last full day.
Day 18 - Last day, check out of the hotel, drink some coffee and grab some fast food, maybe a very light walk in SF and head to the airport to leave at 4:25 pm.
All of the recommendations are very welcome and thanks in advance!

2024.05.13 16:14 Leather_Focus_6535 The currently 124 offenders executed by the state of Oklahoma since the 1970s (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk) [part 2, cases 63-124]

This is the second half of my list for Oklahoma's execution roster. As mentioned in the first part, I broke it in half to comply with reddit's character limitations. For the link to part 1, please click here.
The currently executed 124 offenders, cases 63-124:
63. Robert Knighton (~1960s-2003, lethal injection): In 1973, after being released from a 1968 armed robbery conviction, Knighton went on his first major crime spree. He stabbed and strangled several men and women during many robberies and home invasions. The only victim that was killed, 32 year old Coffier Day, was shot dead while Knighton was arguing with him in his home. Coffier's father, 53 year old Claude, was also injured in the shooting. Knighton's first crime spree ended when he kidnapped a married couple and their 6 year old daughter. They escaped when the wife and mother of the family attacked Knighton with a knife to protect her husband and daughter. The family then notified the police of their abduction. Knighton managed to secure a 30 year manslaughter conviction and a 10 year armed robbery conviction with a plea deal, and was released to a halfway house in 1989. There, he began dating a female addict and befriended a teenage boy. The trio embarked on a nationwide robbery spree together. In Missouri, they shot and killed 59 year old Frank Merrifield and his 40 year old stepson Roy Donahue while robbing their home, and stole guns and money from them. In Oklahoma, the trio fatally shot a couple, 64 year old Virginia and 62 year old Richard Denney, while carjacking them. Their rampage ended when a woman in Texas grow suspicious of them circling a neighborhood. Knighton had a long history of theft convictions dating back to his childhood, and joined the Aryan Brotherhood in prison. Behind bars, he frequently attacked black and Native American inmates out of racial hatred for them.
64. Kenneth Charm (1993-2003, lethal injection): Charm and his teenage cousin lured a family friend, 14 year old Brandy Hill, into their car. They raped Hill and tried strangling her with a towel. When that failed, the cousins bludgeoned her to death with a sledgehammer.
65. Lewis Gilbert II (1994-2003, lethal injection): Gilbert and his teenage accomplice committed at least 4 robbery murders in Missouri, Ohio, and Oklahoma, but he was executed for the killing of 37 year old Roxanne Ruddell. They ambushed and kidnapped Ruddell while she was fishing alone. She was robbed of $3 and her truck, tied to a tree, and shot to death. The pair also fatally shot Ruth Loader, a 79 year old Ohioan woman, while abducting her from her residence, and gunned down a Missouri couple, 86 year old William and 76 year old Flossie Brewer, in their home. Gilbert was also sentenced to death for the Brewer murders by the state of Missouri, but was incarcerated in Oklahoma State Penitentiary’s death row.
66. Robert Duckett (~1980s-2003, lethal injection): After breaking out of prison, Duckett was picked up hitchhiking by John Howard, a 53 year old store owner. Howard agreed to let Duckett stay with him until he could find a job. The pair soon had a failing out, and Duckett was evicted by his host. He retaliated by tying Howard up with wire and then beating him to death with a fireplace poker. Duckett made off with his car after he switched the license plates, and took several bank bags from his store. He had a long violent criminal history, which included several incidents of assault and robbery. One of the incidents involved the beating of an 83 year old man. Allegedly, Duckett was previously gang-raped by other inmates, and suffered from PTSD from the incident. His attorneys claimed that Howard’s sexual advances trigged those memories, and he was killed as a result of Duckett lashing out at them. However, the prosecution shot the argument down, citing that the murder happened after Duckett was evicted from the apartment.
67. Bryan Toles (1993-2003, lethal injection): Toles and his two accomplices forced themselves into the home of the Franceschi family, and shot and killed the family patriarch, 39 year old Juan, in a struggle. Juan's son, 15 year old Lonnie, was also murdered "execution style" out of fear that he could identify Toles and his accomplices. The only survivor of the attack was Norma, Juan's wife and Lonnie's mother, who escaped by hiding in her older daughter's bedroom.
68. Jackie Willingham (1994-2003, lethal injection): Willingham was a door to door salesman selling perfume in an office building. One women, 62 year old Jayne Van Wey, he tried to solicit rejected him despite his repeated offers. Angered by her "rude behavior", Willingham attacked Van Wey when they had a chance encounter near the building's restroom. He dragged Van Wey out of a stall after following her inside, slammed her head against the bathroom wall several times, and kicked her head. Reportedly, Van Wey choked to death on her own blood.
69. Harold McElmurry III (1999-2003, lethal injection): While under the influence of meth, McElmurry and his wife Vicki broke into a home that a WW2 veteran, 80 year old Robert Pendley, shared with his wife, 75 year old Rosa. Robert and Rosa were both quickly subdued and physically restrained by the couple. McElmurry clubbed Robert to death with a pipe in front of Rosa, who was forced to watch by Vicki. Vicki then held Rosa down as McElmurry stabbed her several times with scissors. After killing the Pendleys, the McElmurrys fled with $70 in cash, a pair of guns, and the victims' car. A few days after the murders, they were captured by border agents while trying to cross into Mexico.
70. Tyrone Darks (~1990s-2004, lethal injection): Darks rammed his ex wife, 26 year old Sherry Goodlow, off the road as she was driving with their 2 year old son. After Goodlow crashed, Darks pulled their son out of the wreckage, shot her to death, and then drove away with him. Just before she succumbed to her injuries, Goodlow managed to call and notify the police about her son’s abduction. The police confronted and arrested Darks at his home, and they found the boy unharmed in their search. Darks and Goodlow’s former marriage was marred with violence, and he was arrested on numerous occasions for assaulting her. On death row, Darks was involved in a scheme to defraud a foundation for 9/11 survivors.
71. Just before he died of his injuries, Dodd gave a description of his attacker to the police that matched Miller. A massive amount of circumstantial evidence, such as wearing shoes that resembled the bloodstained footprints next to Dodd's body, a microscopic drop of blood found on his shoes that was tentatively linked to Dodd, his wife's testimony of his unaccounted absence from their home during the murder, and what appeared to be Dodd writing Miller's alias that he knew him by in his own blood, convicted him. Miller’s friends also reported that he was broke and begging them for money a day before the murder, and his wife mentioned him giving her the same amount of money that was stolen from the robbery a day after it happened.

Three of the hostages, 51 year old James Poteet, 39 year old Tery Sheppard, and 24 year old Kieth Smith, were gunned down on the spot, and Thornberg forced the fourth to shoot the fifth with the threat of killing him if he didn’t comply. They then burned down the trailer with the wounded fifth victim still trapped inside, but he managed to escape with his life. Despite being forced to put all the blame on himself in exchange for being spared, the fourth hostage still went forward to the police.

94. John Duty (~1970s-2010, lethal injection): Duty was given a life sentence for abducting, raping, and non fatally shooting a female store clerk during a robbery. While incarcerated, he tricked a fellow inmate, 22 year old Curtis Wise Jr. into allowing himself to be tied up as a part of a hostage ruse, and then strangled him to death with shoelaces. At the time of his murder, Wise was serving a conviction for burglary and contributing to the delinquency of minors. Duty's execution caused some controversy for the use of pentobarbital, a drug more commonly utilized by veterinarians to euthanize pets.

He then left the body in the house, drove off with Sanford’s van, and injured himself in a car accident. As Davis was high while driving, he was arrested for being under the influence. Neiman was also bound and initially survived getting shot multiple times. Out of frustration, Lockett buried her alive, and she succumbed to a combination of suffocation and her injuries. Lockett and his accomplices also gang-raped Hair and beat Bornt, but spared them on the forced condition of their silence. 123. Phillip Hancock (~1982-2023, lethal injection): In 1982, Hancock shot a drug dealer, 27 year old Charles Warren, dead in a dispute over stolen jewelry and was given a manslaughter conviction for it. He was released after serving a 2 year term. About 17 years later, he shot and killed 58 year old James Lynch III and 37 year old Robert Jett Jr. in a drug house. 124. Michael Smith (~2002-2024, lethal injection): A member of the Oak Grove Posse gang, Smith was responsible for two separate fatal shootings on the same day. In one of his murders, he killed Sharath Pulluru, a 24 year old Indian immigrant that worked as a clerk, while robbing a gas station. 2024.05.13 15:09 pohltergiest Rain on my parade

It's mother's Day back in Canada and I'm thinking about mom today. I'm so sick though that I'll do a call tomorrow when I'm doing better. I tend to do poorly on phone calls when I'm not well. I woke up very ill this morning and my body did not want to cooperate at all. Who knew that biking a lot on a body trying to kick an illness might prolong said illness.
The rain indeed came and did not stop. It was pouring cats and dogs in the morning and the prospect of going outside in the rain while sick made me feel miserable. With my poor condition and the possibility of a thunderstorm during the day, we were in no condition to be going very far. We tried to extend our stay but the hotel was fully booked, our next best bet was to head up the road into the mountains and find a place there.
On my booking app, one hotel was listed at half it's usual price for some reason. We've stayed at a lot of livemax hotels and found them to at least be okay, so we figured it was safe to take the cheap option this time, which was $49. It was one of their onsen properties as well, and it looked like there was a train nearby if we wanted to get food and a bath in the next town over, which looked to be nicer. It was either that or pay another $100 for what would amount to a shelter from the rain, and in my addled state where sickness feels like a waste of time, a cheap hotel is a good way to convince me to stay put and rest. It was 20km away and the rain wasn't going to get any lighter, so we packed up, donned our rain gear, and set out for some breakfast.
A grocery store was near our hotel (which again was just a series of trailers in the parking lot of a casino), and we figured we could get something for breakfast there as nothing else was open on the way. Inside we found a store that was a bit of a time capsule. The music, the ambiance, even the too-cold air conditioning felt decades old. The aisles felt too large and there were large empty areas signalling that the store did not have enough business for it's size. The place was meticulously kept though, even if it was only one lonely cashier in the cavernous building. We found some hot coffee and had a few pastries while we talked about the economy of Japan and how the feeling here could relate to back home. Can anything be done with the general feeling of decline everywhere? Why were things so much better in Japan decades ago? Questions for economists, but not ones they necessarily have good answers for. I feel like many questions for economists are better suited for fortune tellers.
There were a couple of games in the grocery store which caught our eye, including a trio of games for kids (given the console was two feet off the ground), that were essentially slots. You pumped in coins to adjust your bet, then pressed a button to play a chance game, and if you won you got more coins. I have no idea how anyone thinks this kind of game is appropriate or ethical to have around children. No wonder this country has such a gambling problem.
The ride from Nikko to our hotel was calm and wet. The hill upwards was gentle enough that I didn't feel too exhausted, but I did feel like I was going to fall asleep on my bike if the coughing fits didn't take me down first. I really felt wretched today, the week and a half of being sick because I never took the downtime to get better is really catching up with me today. Make time for your body or your body will take it's time, I guess. The road followed a river in a steep gorge, the mountains rising up on either side. Everything was blanketed in thick trees, the slopes now too steep for most developments.
Nonetheless, little onsen towns were nestled into the cracks of the mountains here and there, but the decline of the area was impossible not to notice. While the odd resort was still shiny, it's clear the volume of travelers to the area has dwindled from lofty amounts many many years ago. This area felt harder hit than most we've been to, with half the buildings we saw being either abandoned or in a sorry state. Whole hotels empty, apartment blocks with the windows smashed in, shuttered storefronts. It's sad for the people who have called this area home for generations.
We got to our hotel without much of a plan, as I was too addled to think that far. We agreed that food was going to need to happen, and the onsen I wanted to see was in the town downhill from us. We decided the train was our best bet for parking our bikes while we waited to check in. The train station was nice, but looking at the departures board, the train only ran a handful of times per day, and we wouldn't get back till late in the evening. It also would cost us $30 each just to ride two stops there and back. Not going to work. Instead we went to one of the two places open during lunch.
The restaurant was cute with half a dozen tables and a dated but spotless interior. The ladies we saw clearly were a multigenerational family running the place, with a woman old enough that she couldn't stand up straight anymore still zooming around with tea and orders. Soaked, cold, and with nowhere to go, we brought our books and settled in to stay for awhile. The restaurant never got more than half full and we ordered several meals worth of food, drinks, and desserts, so we figured they wouldn't mind if we sat and quietly read our books. I got a yakiniku set meal and bryce got the karaage set, both were great but Bryce's karaage was especially good. We also got a cola float to share which was delightfully old fashioned but very tasty.
When it was finally time to check in at our hotel, my body was starting to act up. I think the cold and wet and tiredness was getting to me as some of my neurological issues flared up. Not a big deal, but had me a bit twitchy and in desperate need of a hot bath and rest. The hotel lobby was quite nice, but the rest of the place was as we expected; enormous, and falling apart, but working. Various walls and ceilings had water damage that was never going to be fixed, many many doors said "private" or "staff only" that looked to be old banquet halls. A lounge laid dark, never to have a singer again. We found a roof access, the roof patched many times by hand. An arcade with games that were at least 20 or 30 years old were still in working order, maintained as well as any other thing here. The private onsen was damaged beyond use, but the main public ones were functioning.
My onsen was in the basement, and the entrance area again had a huge lounge area that would never be used, and a bunch of other darkened areas that were curious but creeped me out. The bath was in a large room with tall windows and a big stone bath, a large rock wall being the main attraction. I spent some time soaking here till I watched some ladies walk out a different door. Monkeys were bumping on the windows, so I followed them where that went. It lead to three outdoor baths, one just a tub. The big bath overlooked the river and was quite lovely, clearly what was keeping this place afloat, so to speak. Again, really good value for $50 for the two of us.
After my bath, I got up and nearly passed out from the lack of blood pressure and immediately started feeling ill. I went back to the room, grabbed some water and got horizontal. The room is a rather spacious Japanese style room with tatami mats, but with soft beds. The AC works and we have a view of the river from the 6th floor. This place is great. Bryce had a great time soaking in his onsen, which also had outdoor baths and a sauna too. After he returned to the room we went down to the arcade to amuse ourselves before dinner.
As I mentioned the arcade contained some real antiques, pinball-ish games with carved wood channels, racing games with hand drawn art, slots that had real spinning wheels instead of just screens. Everything was also brutally difficult, also in keeping with the time period. Bryce got the high score on the alligator whack a mole game and also beat me 3 out of 3 on the drum game. Can't win em all.
We walked to the only other place in town for dinner, going into a creepy tunnel that went under the hotel. We eventually decided that the tunnel went straight to the kitchens and probably was used for deliveries at some point but now was full of junk and discarded kitchen equipment that was probably too difficult to get rid of. Every old or abandoned building we've seen is full to the brim with empty paint cans, old computers and dilapidated equipment. This stuff must cost a fortune to get rid of.
The restaurant we went to was another cute Japanese restaurant, this one with an older woman serving and a young man in the kitchen cooking. I got the house special udon and Bryce got karaage again. Maybe Bryce needs to branch out a bit. The udon meal was heavenly and wonderful on my sick body, lots of seafood, a hearty broth and chewy noodles. Easily the best udon I've ever had. We ordered extra karaage and a few drinks while we talked strategy for the next week of riding. Also, like the last place, we felt we could stay because they didn't have much business and we wanted to order more because of it. We stayed quite a while but nobody else came.
We decided to cut out a section of the north tour and head directly through the mountains to our port. We're feeling stressed about the end of the trip and want more leeway in case things go wrong and also more time in Hokkaido as we've heard good things. We'll miss out on Fukushima and Sendai and Morioka, but get to experience the internal mountain valleys of northern Japan. This feels like a decent move, as we've seen a lot of the coastal lowlands already and some highland adventures sounds good. Plus it gains us half a week in hokkaido which will allow us three or four days to prepare for our departure, which means lots of time to find gifts and other cool things to bring home.
Back in the hotel room, we're looking for a nice rest and an early start tomorrow. We have two options, a blistering 5 day tour with four 100km days, or a 7 day tour with 6 75km days. We're shooting for the latter. We'll attempt the big ride just after Sapporo. For now, I want to get healthy and enjoy the ride. Sleep tonight and tomorrow is a new day, hopefully I'll be healthy by then.

2024.05.13 07:13 thinkingstranger May 12, 2024

I write a lot about how the Biden-Harris administration is working to restore the principles of the period between 1933 and 1981, when members of both political parties widely shared the belief that the government should regulate business, provide a basic social safety net, promote infrastructure, and protect civil rights. And I write about how that so-called liberal consensus broke down as extremists used the Reconstruction-era image of the American cowboy—who, according to myth, wanted nothing from the government but to be left alone—to stand against what they insisted was creeping socialism that stole tax dollars from hardworking white men in order to give handouts to lazy minorities and women.
But five major stories over the past several days made me realize that I’ve never written about how Trump and his loyalists have distorted the cowboy image until it has become a poisonous caricature of the values its recent defenders have claimed to champion.
The cowboy myth originated during the Reconstruction era as a response to the idea that a government that defended Black rights was “socialist” and that the tax dollars required to pay bureaucrats and army officers would break hardworking white men.
This weekend, on Saturday, May 11, Paul Kiel of ProPublica and Russ Buettner of the New York Times teamed up to deliver a deep investigation into what Trump was talking about when he insisted that he must break tradition and refuse to release his tax returns when he ran for office in 2016 and 2020, citing an audit.
The New York Times had already reported that one of the reasons the Internal Revenue Service was auditing Trump’s taxes was that, beginning in 2010, he began to claim a $72.9 million tax refund because of huge losses from his failing casinos.
Kiel and Buettner followed the convoluted web of Trump’s finances to find another issue with his tax history. They concluded that Trump’s Chicago skyscraper, his last major construction project, was “a vast money loser.” He claimed losses as high as $651 million on it in 2008. But then he appears to have moved ownership of the building in 2010 from one entity to a new one—the authors describe it as “like moving coins from one pocket to another”—and used that move to claim another $168 million in losses, thereby double-dipping.
The experts the authors consulted said that if he loses the audit battle, Trump could owe the IRS more than $100 million. University of Baltimore law professor Walter Schwidetzky, who is an expert on partnership taxation, told the authors: “I think he ripped off the tax system.”
The cowboy myth emphasized dominance over the Indigenous Americans and Mexicans allegedly attacking white settlers from the East. On Friday an impressive piece of reporting from Jude Joffe-Block at NPR untangled the origins of a story pushed by Republicans that Democrats were encouraging asylum seekers to vote illegally for President Joe Biden in 2024, revealing that the story was entirely made up.
The story broke on X, formerly Twitter, on April 15, when the investigative arm of the right-wing Heritage Foundation, which promises to provide “aggressive oversight” of the Biden administration, posted photos of what it claimed were flyers from inside portable toilets at a migrant camp in Matamoros, Mexico, that said in broken Spanish: “Reminder to vote for President Biden when you are in the United States. We need another four years of his term to stay open.” The tweet thread got more than 9 million views and was boosted by Elon Musk, X’s owner.
But the story was fabricated. The flyer used the name of a small organization that helps asylum seekers, along with the name of the woman who runs the organization. She is a U.S. citizen and told Joffe-Block that her organization has “never encouraged people to vote for anyone.” Indeed, it has never come up because everyone knows noncitizens are not eligible to vote. The flyer had outdated phone numbers and addresses, and its Spanish was full of errors. Migrants who are staying at the encampment as they wait for their appointments to enter the U.S. say they have never seen such flyers, and no one has urged them to vote for Biden.
Digging showed that the flyer was “discovered” by the right-wing video site Muckraker, which specializes in “undercover” escapades. The founder of Muckraker, Anthony Rubin, and his brother, Joshua Rubin, had shown up at the organization’s headquarters in Matamoros asking to become volunteers for the organization; they and their conversation were captured on video, and signs point to the conclusion that they planted the flyers.
Nonetheless, Republicans ran with the story. Within 12 hours after the fake flyer appeared on X, Republican representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Dan Bishop (R-NC) brought posters of it to Congress, and Republicans made it a centerpiece of their insistence that Congress must pass a new law against noncitizen voting. Rather than being protected by modern-day cowboys, the woman who ran the organization that helps asylum seekers got death threats.
The cowboy image emphasized the masculinity of the independent men it championed, but the testimony of Stephanie Clifford, the adult film actress also known as Stormy Daniels, in Trump’s criminal trial for falsifying business records to cover up his payments to Clifford to keep her story of their sexual encounter secret before the 2016 election, turns Trump’s aggressive dominance into sad weakness. Covering Clifford’s testimony, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times yesterday wrote that “Trump came across as a loser in her account—a narcissist, cheater, sad Hugh Hefner wannabe, trading his satin pajamas for a dress shirt and trousers (and, later, boxers) as soon as Stormy mocked him.”
In the literature of the cowboy myth, the young champion of the underdog is eventually supposed to settle down and take care of his family, who adore him. But the news of the past week has caricatured that shift, too. On Wednesday, May 8, the Republican Party of Florida announced that it had picked Trump’s youngest son, 18-year-old Barron, as one of the state’s at-large delegates to the Republican National Convention, along with Trump’s other sons, Eric and Donald Jr.; Don Jr.’s fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle; and Trump’s second daughter, Tiffany, and her husband.
On Friday, May 10, Trump’s current wife and Barron’s mother, former first lady Melania Trump, issued a statement saying: “While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments.” It is hard not to interpret this extraordinary snub from his own wife and son as a chilly response to the past month of testimony about his extramarital escapades while Barron was an infant.
Finally, there was the eye-popping story broken by Josh Dawsey and Maxine Joselow in the Washington Post on Thursday, revealing that last month, at a private meeting with about two dozen top oil executives at Mar-a-Lago, Trump offered to reverse President Joe Biden’s environmental rules designed to combat climate change and to stop any new ones from being enacted in exchange for a $1 billion donation.
Trump has promised his supporters that he would be an outsider, using his knowledge of business to defend ordinary Americans against those elites who don’t care about them. Now he has been revealed as being willing to sell us out—to sell humanity out—for the bargain basement price of $1 billion (with about 8 billion people in the world, this would make us each worth about 12 and a half cents).
Chief White House ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration Richard Painter wrote: “This is called bribery. It’s a felony.” He followed up with “Even a candidate who loses can be prosecuted for bribery. That includes the former guy asking for a billion dollars in campaign cash from oil companies in exchange for rolling back environmental laws.”
The cowboy myth was always a political image, designed to undermine the idea of a government that worked for ordinary Americans. It was powerful after the Civil War but faded into the past in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s as Americans realized that their lives depended on government regulation and a basic social safety net. The American cowboy burst back into prominence with the advent of the Marlboro Man in 1954, the year of the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision, and the idea of an individual white man who worked hard, wanted nothing from the government but to be left alone, was a sex symbol, and protected his women became a central myth in the rise of politicians determined to overturn the liberal consensus.
Now it seems the myth has come full circle, with the party led by a man whose wife rejects him and whose lovers ridicule him, who makes up stories about dangerous “others,” cheats on his taxes, solicits bribes, and tries to sell out his followers for cash—the very caricature the mythological cowboy was invented to fight.

2024.05.13 01:14 ThrowRAnosnoop AITAH for getting angry at my father for choosing to go on a trip with his girlfriend over coming to see me?

Hi all! I (29F) have a 1 y/o daughter. It is my parents first grandchild so they are very close with her. My husband and I live 2 hours from any family or friends in a different part of the state.
My husband has a week long meeting coming up (june) out of state, so I will be alone here. I told both of my parents (they are divorced) and I asked each of them if they could come for a couple days to minimize the time I’m alone here. My daughter is VERY active and though I can handle her if I need to, it will be helpful having family around and also makes me more comfortable than staying alone each night.
Both of them said they could come. There were never any definite plans but they each said they could stay a few days at different times. This was maybe 2 months ago.
About a week and a half ago I asked my father if he was still coming, and wanted to know what the plans were. He proceeded to tell me that he was going to Canada to visit my brother because it was his birthday. He said he couldn’t go back on those plans because his girlfriend had already gotten a “dog hotel” to house her dog when they were gone. These plans were made after my father had already told me he was coming to visit me.
My father is middle aged, and so I brushed it off as him forgetting and though I was annoyed, I honestly was happy for him to be going to see my brother because my brother is unable to visit the states right now due to various reasons, so it’s important for us to visit him.
Fast forward to today, and he came to visit me. I asked him about his trip to Canada and he told me that he wasn’t going to Canada, he was just going on a trip to a different state with gf. Apparently they just randomly decided not to visit my brother and go to a different state instead. His GF loves to travel. They’ve been together for about 10 months and already gone on two or three trips together. It’s very out of the box for my father because he really never used to travel unless it was to see his kids.
I was quite cold to him for the rest of the day. I think he could tell, but we didn’t have a conversation about it.
I’m happy for him and the fact he’s found companionship, but this isn’t the only time he’s bailed on visiting me because he wants to spend time with her. And this time I feel like he’s leaving me high and dry because he had previously promised me that he’d come for a few days to help out while I’m alone. I just wish he hadn’t told me yes if he had no intention of coming. I feel like him and his girlfriend could have just come to stay with me if they didn’t want to go visit my brother. I have a spare room and there’s a casino five minutes from where I live - his girlfriend loves the casinos. It’s also very beautiful here and there’s a lot of nature, so there was plenty for them to do.
I’m upset. My husband seems to think I’m being a little bit of a jerk and says that it’s my dad’s life and he can do whatever he wants to do. He thinks I have no right to be upset. He says it was rude that while he was visiting I gave him the cold shoulder. So AITAH?

2024.05.12 17:38 Internal-Win-333 Puerto Rico Report & Parking Hack

The wife and I visited Puerto Rico last week and I managed to sneak in three short sessions at the crap tables. The short version is that I managed to come out with a net $1,325 gain, hopefully ending my long 6 month losing streak, but that’s another story.
Our tour book informed us that by law, all casinos are closely associated with hotels. I’ll explain how that is significant.
Tuesday was a washout with torrential rain in the afternoon, so we decided to explore a few of the San Jose casinos using our rented car. First up was Foxwoods which is right next to the airport. When we drove up to the property, there was a sign directing us to a casino players parking lot. Didn’t expect this and a nice surprise. It’s a tiny lot, but plenty of room on a Tuesday. The casino had one very long crap table that probably has room for 10 or even 12 players per side for a total of 20 or more. Unfortunately, the table wasn’t open. When I asked the pit boss about it, he said they’d recently moved the table from one end of the pit to the other and were still installing the cameras. Craps info: $10 min, ATS 175x All, 34x Small, 30x Tall.
On the way out, we asked the security guy by the door how to pay our parking ticket. His reply, “Take it to the Player Reward Desk over there and they’ll validate it for free parking.” Really? Sure enough, we got it validated, no questions asked, even though we hadn’t bet a dollar. Fed the ticket into the machine at the gate and we were off again.
After a short drive, the next stop was the Marriot Resort and Stellaris Casino. We pulled up the hotel lobby main entrance and told the attendant we were there for the casino. He told us they had both valet and self parking available. Valet parking came with a fee, but self parking was free with validation. I’m already feeling like a winner by discovering free parking at the hotel/casinos. We parked, found our way to the casino and the lone crap table only to find it empty and unmanned. The pit boss apologized for not having a crew. A blackjack dealer standing next to us recommended to hit La Concha just a short walk away because they always have a crap game going. Because the rain had now become monsoon force, we chose to get back in the car and drive.
With a little google magic we soon discovered that La Concha hotel and Casino del Mar were the same property. This was another little piece of good luck as Casino del Mar was one place I planned to visit after reading about it on this sub such as this thread: https://www.reddit.com/Craps/comments/17jfh93/craps_in_puerto_rico/ . They’re still at $5 min.
I play 3 point molly with occasional 6/8 place, bought in for $400 and decided to start with 10+20 odds (they allow 3/4/5x odds). The first two shooters sucked with point, come, come, 7. The dice came to me, and I held them for about 30 minutes. I pressed my initial $10 bets up to $30 odds, and from there pressed my pass and come bets in $5 increments all with triple odds. My last bet was an 8 come for 25+75 before finishing my roll with about $900 profit. I stuck around for a couple more shooters and colored in +$750. I was able to get back to Casino del Mar on Friday and ended up -$25.
We were staying at Margaritaville which is about a 40 minute drive east of San Juan. That evening after dinner at the hotel, I hit their tiny casino with the smallest crap table I’d ever seen. It could fit 4 people on each side, depending on the size of the players. The table had a 2 person crew, one dealing both sides and a stick plus a third on break, no box man but one or two pit bossed hoovered nearby. $10 min and $200 max. That max will limit higher stakes players or when a very hot shooter shows up. No ATS or hop bets. I managed to finish the session +$600 after a $28 dealer tip. I almost always tip, win, lose or draw. The Margaritaville crap table is only open Friday and Saturday and the table opened about 6 pm on Friday.
Recap: Street parking in San Juan is a nightmare. There are a few public parking garages depending on your destination. For gamblers, most of the casinos don’t have parking, but their associated hotels do and it’s free with validation at the player rewards desks. Valet parking is available for a fee.
I finished the week +$1,325 at the tables.

2024.05.12 15:10 tdam08 Poker in Macau

Hey guys,
I’m planning to visit Macau for two days (from tomorrow) and I’m staying over night at the grand Lisboa hotel. Is there any poker games around if so which casinos and what is the lowest stakes? I normally play in London blinds £1/2 sitting with around £200-400.
Thanks

2024.05.12 04:27 Z4mb0ni Had to wrangle both drunk parents across a city

So we my mom (52), dad (51) and I (19f) just got back to our hotel after an admittedly pretty awesome baseball game. The home team had a grand slam and everything. Both my parents had a couple too many drinks and then some.
My mom is actively stumbling around the city sidewalks while my dad who's slightly less drunk walking ahead like he knows where he's going (he doesnt)
First my mom says she wants to go to this seafood place. My dad then says we should go to a casino (I ignore him). We try going to get food, the map app is kinda fucked up but we're moving. After a while my mom suddenly wants to go back to the hotel (thank fuck) we go to the nearby monorail station.
luckily the monorail is somehow completely free and now we're on our way back. We're in the hotel room and my mom suddenly realized how kinda fucked up it was that I, their teenage daughter, had to even deal with them this wasted.
She then tells this to my dad while also bringing up the last time I had to deal with him drunk. then he starts the whole "oh so this is my fault" thing. I pretty much say "let's do this in the morning" and we all leave it at that. Now they're both asleep doing their respective sleep thing (dad snoring, mom talking gibberish in her sleep) and I'm here typing this.
This is the second time this month I had to do this. Last time it was just my dad who got so drunk he fell asleep in the car while I was trying to drive him home from the casino with heavy road construction.
This time was even worse, I had to pretty much hold my mom's arm and then also worry about my dad who likes to always go ahead.
Does anyone else wanna share a story like this? Is this common? I hope the fuck not because I'm barely into my 4 month summer break from college and this shit sucks.
Update: Both parents are awake now and my mom apologized for last night. Dad didn't and tried to say he was fine (he wasnt), but that's typical. Mom barely remembers anything after leaving the game. Dad says he "remembers everything" but I don't believe him.
Also appearently the stuff in the jars they were drinking was vodka + lemonade. They also had some beers to go with that, no wonder they were both terrible.
I never really enjoyed drinking before but there's no way I'm gonna now. Fuck that shit.

2024.05.12 04:09 RealCaesarsPalace A Caesar’s Rant

I’ll start with the fact that I’ve been a Caesar’s loyalist since 2008 and have maintained some sort of status to-date. All these years I’ve been diamond elite and above. However I think I’m done trying to achieve status and this will be my last year with status. I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and have never heard that many people with status echo the same sentiment. I’ve seen Caesar’s slowly go downhill, but they really went on overdrive after the El Dorado acquisition. It’s very obvious that they are trying to see how much they can squeeze out of customers before with they change their habits. I love the employees and that’s one of the main reasons why we’ve stuck with them over the past few years, but the straw that broke the camel’s back is the fact that despite my significant gambling they are starting to charge for some rooms on weekends, even for Harrah’s, Linq and flamingo. When I was there, I ordered my usual drink and noticed that it tasted “lighter” than normal. The bartender told me that per direction of corporate, all mixed drinks need to have less than a shot of liquor or risk getting written up. Of course, your experience might vary and is very dependent on the bartender, however it just feels scummy and penny pinching when I’m dropping thousands per day.
On a previous trip I stopped at Circa and played a small percentage of my usual daily play that I normally gamble at Caesar’s properties. Within a week I got a message from a host offering a suite, free play and a food & beverage credit. Which is more than what my pretty much non-existent host at Caesar’s has ever offered. I took him on the offer and the whole experience at circa was miles ahead compared to Caesar’s. From check in, restaurants that doesn’t feel like they’re nickle and diming you to the state of art suite that’s actually clean. I’m not really a huge fan of Fremont, but didn’t really had the need to leave Circa.
I went to Caesar’s for the last few days of my trip and I wish I didn’t. As that just made the difference between properties more glaring. Despite being Seven Stars, the lady at check in truly didn’t want to be there and limited herself to only ask for card/ID and gave me my hotel key. Didn’t say any other words. Like most rooms at Caesar’s properties, it was showing signs of wear and tear and in dire need of a refresh. Cleanliness could’ve been better, but was not terrible. I could go further in detail but I feel like everyone here is pretty familiar with what I’m describing.
I took advantage of the current status match that’s being offered by the Wynn and played there for a day. Obviously my sample size is fairly small/random, but I won more at the Wynn in a day that I’ve won at Caesar’s properties over the past 15 months.
If you haven’t given other casinos a chance I challenge you to give them a try to see what we’ve been missing and how there are still some casinos that treat customers like actual paying customers and how this game at the end of the day is a two way street.
Thanks if you read this far. /rant over

2024.05.12 00:23 dmreif Wilson Fisk's rise to power, a timeline

Wilson Fisk's rise to power, a timeline
I feel that that there's a good criticism to be had of Daredevil over the fact that we're not given much on what happened in Fisk's life between when he killed his father and the crime boss he is at the start of season 1. What was his rise to power like to go from this:
https://preview.redd.it/7ixux4pk0vzc1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b810a7e8457663c85fe3bf1ab7a4a894f3af022
...to this:
https://preview.redd.it/h5nmlzes0vzc1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4f6bc8683dbdf906ec3043b28a88efbc21b550b
I'll digress, the reason I created this thread is because I recently got interested in Godfather of Harlem, a semi-fictionalized take on organized crime in 1960s Harlem. And in that show, Vincent D'Onofrio plays a fictionalized version of Vincent "the Chin" Gigante, the Genovese family boss who became known for using front bosses to insulate himself and also pretending to be insane to deter FBI investigations into him.
https://preview.redd.it/3h4xb7271vzc1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=632e64374a562441c51229bcd14ba48d1833e207
And D'Onofrio's still carrying a fair amount of Fisk in his performance as Gigante, especially when he's using intimidation or giving orders (hell, he even seems to slip into his Fisk voice on several occasion). Which makes his Gigante come off to a degree as behaving like how I imagine Fisk probably was like in the 1980s and 1990s.
So it got me thinking what Fisk would've been doing. And it made me develop a timeline for his criminal empire, based on what we have in Daredevil as well as stuff in Echo and Hawkeye.
1960: Fisk is born (I think Fisk is supposed to be about the same age as D'Onofrio).
1972: Fisk kills his father. After he and his mom dispose of the body, she sends him away to live with her relatives in Tamaha, Oklahoma to protect him from potential retribution from Rigoletto (given that his father was in debt to Rigoletto). The evidence exists in what Fisk says on his first date with Vanessa:
Wilson Fisk: When I was a kid, I used to dream what it would be like to... to live somewhere far away from Hell's Kitchen. Somewhere beautiful. Vanessa Marianna: What made you stay? Wilson Fisk: I didn't. When I was 12 years old, my mother, she sent me to stay with relatives. Had a farm, middle of nowhere. Those were good years. Vanessa Marianna: But you came back. Wilson Fisk: Yes. Time and distance, they afford a certain clarity. I realized that this city was a part of me, that it was in my blood. And I would do anything to make it a better place... for people like you.
Adding what we see in Echo, and my take is that it was here that Fisk took his first forays into criminal activity. He became friends with William Lopez, and they ran their own little crew.
1979: Around when he is 18 or so, Fisk becomes homesick, and returns to New York City. There's still the matter of his father's debts to Rigoletto. Having developed street cred in Oklahoma, Fisk gets himself a position working for Rigoletto, working out a deal where a cut of whatever money he brings in goes towards repaying his father's debts.
1979-late 1990s: Over this period of time, Fisk gets made and rises through the ranks of the Rigoletto syndicate, going from Rigoletto's driver to being an enforcer and finally his underboss.
Mid-1990s: During this time, Fisk as underboss has some dealings with the Kitchen Irish, and is thus acquainted with Roscoe Sweeney and Silke, the gangsters who were responsible for pushing Matt's dad to take a dive to Creel.
Late 1990s/early 2000s: It is around this time that two things happen: the first is that Fisk decides he needs Rigoletto gone because he's not content with being number two, plus he wants to get involved in several ventures that Rigoletto isn't interested in. So Fisk sets Rigoletto up to be sent away to prison on RICO violations, something he pulls off thanks to secretly manipulating some FBI agents and corrupt cops in his pocket. While this is going on, Fisk meets James Wesley, and grooms him into becoming his right hand man.
So with Rigoletto locked up and removed from power, Fisk is now the de facto boss of the Rigoletto syndicate, with Wesley acting as his combined underboss and consigliere who also serves as the intermediary between Fisk and underlings who carry out his orders.
Mid to late 2000s: Fisk travels abroad to China and Japan to forge partnerships with the Yakuza and Triads, and develops a fondness for Chinese and Japanese culture (note that he wears a kimono in 1x08, and he has Chinese tea on hand to serve for Madame Gao when she visits him at his penthouse). He makes deals with Madame Gao to move her product in Hell's Kitchen, and Nobu to act as a local contact for Nobu's employers.
So the Hell's Kitchen syndicate now looks like this: Fisk as the man at the top, Wesley as consigliere and emissary between the various partners, Leland Owlsley as the treasurer, Gao, Nobu, and the Kitchen Irish as Fisk's supporting partners.
While that's going on, William Lopez arrives in New York and establishes the Tracksuit Mafia, and gets seed money from Fisk to get the gang off the ground. Fisk takes an interest in William's daughter Maya, as he sees potential for her to become a useful soldier to him. Fisk begins grooming her, while also paying her friend Kazi to spy on her for him. This is something he secretly does on the side up until he's arrested (deleted scenes in Hawkeye show Fisk wearing his black Daredevil season 1 suits in his interactions with Maya).
Also during this time, Derek Bishop borrows money from Fisk in order to start his private security firm because no bank will offer him collateral for a loan. He still hasn't fully repaid his debts by the time of his death in the Incident. Bishop Security is the firm that employs Francis and the other bodyguards Fisk uses in season 1 of Daredevil, and I think they also ran security for the Presidential Hotel in season 3.
2009-2012: Anatoly and Vladimir Ranskahov arrive in New York, and start a new enterprise in Hell's Kitchen. They do a lot to get themselves noticed by Fisk and his partners, and Fisk eventually acquiesces to let them get a seat at the table.
Around this same time, Fisk's partnership with the Kitchen Irish begins to falter because their boss feels like he's nothing more than a proxy for Fisk to run the gang through, and that Fisk doesn't view him as an equal. Similar to how we see him handle problems like the Russians and Nobu during season 1, Fisk decides to take the Kitchen Irish out. He has John Healy assassinate the Kitchen Irish boss, and Nesbitt is subsequently promoted to take his place. Fisk then orchestrates a war between the Ranskahovs and the Kitchen Irish, and runs both sides of the war: he provides manpower and resources to Vladimir and Anatoly, while simultaneously paying off some of Nesbitt's underlings to provide him intel. The war, which racks up a lot of casualties on both sides, ends around the time of the Incident, with the Kitchen Irish being reduced to a second tier gang that is left running a turf below 42nd Street, and which has to pay a tax to Fisk to be allowed to continue operating. (After Fisk is arrested, Nesbitt makes plans for the gang to make a return to power with Finn Cooley's support, but they're massacred by Frank Castle before that can happen.)
2012: Don Rigoletto, Silvio Manfredi (the retired mobster that Ben Urich is introduced meeting with in 1x03) and some other old-school mobsters get released from prison as part of the "Class of 2012". While Silvio would rather enjoy retirement (though keeps his ear to the ground based on what he's saying to Ben), Rigoletto wants to get back in the game and take back control of Hell's Kitchen from Fisk, as he's had time to realize that Fisk had a hand in his getting sent away.
Summer 2012: Derek Bishop is killed in the Incident, and his wife Eleanor inherits his debts to Fisk.
2012-2014: Fisk takes advantage of the damage from the one-two punch of the Incident and Hurricane Sandy. Through the shell company of Confederated Global Investments, he asserts control over Union Allied Construction, Westmeyer Holt Contracting, etc. and engages in bid rigging schemes regarding the redevelopment of Hell's Kitchen.
April 2013: Fisk begins paying Detectives Christian Blake and Carl Hoffman.
Late 2013-Early 2014: I borrow a bit from this thread about how I think Rigoletto's downfall went. Rigoletto begins working with the FBI to try and bring down Fisk, a task force run by SAC Tammy Hattley. Unfortunately for Rigoletto, it turns out that Blake and Hoffman have have loose-lipped friends on this task force who tell them that Rigoletto's trying to lead them to this new secret "kingpin" who runs organized crime in Hell's Kitchen. They tell Wesley about it, he tells Fisk about it, and they decide they need to turn Hattley to their side. John Healy kills Hattley's son in a staged hit-and-run. Fisk then arranges for Hattley to be brought to him, and uses a combination of a big bribe and the threat of having her husband and daughter killed to secure her loyalty.
Fisk engages Rigoletto in a protracted war, using his own men to eliminate Rigoletto's supporters and destroy his businesses. In June 2014, his men abduct Rigoletto right out from under the FBI's surveillance, and bring him to the Veles Taxi garage. Here, Fisk takes the opportunity to gloat to Rigoletto about how he's a washed out has-been, and then personally beats him to death. He then has Vladimir and Anatoly's guys cut Rigoletto to pieces and dispose of the remains. Rigoletto's books are subsequently acquired by Fisk, including such things as the $28,957 debt that Farnum owes (the one that Wesley promises him will be forgiven if he successfully hangs Karen in her jail cell). This whole affair also marks the beginning of the end of Fisk's relationship with the Russians, as they begin to feel the same thing that the Kitchen Irish felt: that Fisk sees them as lapdogs and not equals. Such an opinion of theirs only strengthens when Matt Murdock begins targeting them as the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.
September 2014: Karen Page discovers the evidence of what Fisk is doing at Union Allied, prompting him to have her framed for Daniel Fisher's murder. After the subsequent failed attempts on her life, he decides to settle for buying her off, a decision that indirectly will lead to Karen murdering Wesley down the line. Fisk also buys the loyalty of Caldwell at the Bulletin to tip him off about whatever Ben Urich tries to write about him.
October 2014: Fisk having Hattley in his back pocket means that the FBI investigation into the bombings is quickly scuttled and closed. Still, the matter of Detective Blake possibly talking in the wake of being shot leads Fisk to set about his scheme to manipulate Ray Nadeem (a name offered to him by Hattley). He drives Nadeem into debt over the next two years.
December 2014: Fisk is arrested. With Wesley and Owlsley dead, he appoints Felix Manning to take their place as street boss and treasurer, with Felix working in coordination with Donovan & Partners. Felix oversees the remaining street operations for the duration of Fisk's stay in prison up through his release at the start of season 3.

2018-2023: Fisk takes advantage of the post-Snap chaos to get himself out of prison and back into power running things on the street. He also appoints Maya to effectively take over Dex's former job as Fisk's chief assassin, and further secures her loyalty by arranging her father's death at the hands of the Ronin, then writes himself into her life as her new "north star" (much like he did with Dex).
