2024.05.15 19:17 KBTB757 Rejected from job 3 days after applying

I applied for an assistant professor job on Monday. I met the qualifications, have experience in all the facets they are looking for, but was notified today that I was removed from the applicant pool (only 3 days after applying). The question I am wonder is why? Some possibilities I have brain stormed:
To those of you who serve on search committees, have you ever dismissed someone so fast? Is it worth reaching out to the search committee chair to find out what happened?

2024.05.15 19:17 alreadypicked Can sysadmin see if i copied "text" not files to my google drive(docs) or gmail draft ?

I just finished an internship with a company. I used it to apply to other jobs towards the end and uploaded and downloaded my CV multiple times and also used google docs to edit my CV. And i had to prepare a presentation and report for my school. I used google docs for this too because i would work on the report while at work as well, if i had time. I can use google docs only in offline mode and sending emails through gmail is blocked. So sometimes i copied text on to gmail draft so i could open it in my personal pc and edit it at home. Now IT and security have contacted my manager and he contacted me asking if i copied files to gdrive or dropbox. And i can only remember my report and presentation. And also i used the work computer to apply to other jobs online, so i have uploaded my CV multiple times.

2024.05.15 19:16 UnsuspectingLobster [IWantOut] 31M Digital Artist Canada -> Italy/EU

I recently got my Italian citizenship and passport. How do I go about applying to jobs? I'm specifically a 3D Artist in the video games industry.
I know just apply online but how should I communicate that I have Italian/EU citizenship and a Italian passport during my application? Do I add a section about that in my resume or something? Probably obvious, but should I make an Italian version of my Resume?

2024.05.15 19:15 itsbevy Offer letter for 1099

This is the most relevant subreddit I could find for this question.
I applied for an apartment. I make $60k/year off a W2 (I’ve had that job for 3 years) But I recently started as a 1099 for a second income. I sent the contract in the application process, but it doesn’t really state much other than my pay is $30/hr and what my job is. Doesn’t state how many hours I’m technically working (even though it’ll be around 30 hrs/week)
The apartment I’m getting, I probably won’t qualify for with just my W2 income. Is that contract enough? Or will they expect an actual offer letter that shows the pay rate AND expected hours? My boss at the 1099 is being a bit difficult about it, asking why the contract I signed isn’t enough. I just started here and haven’t gotten my first paycheck yet so I’m trying not to be difficult or bother him about it too much.

2024.05.15 19:14 cryst4lclear looking to improve my design skills

hello! i went to college for graphic design, graduated in 2021, and my first "adult" job was not related to GD, it was customer service instead, stayed there for 2 years and then i had to quit because the oportunity to move to a different country came up and i took it. now, my family is trying to get me to look for a job related to GD, but the thing is, i'm really not confident in my skills and and i do feel like my professors and college in general failed me (i'm from Nicaragua, so the political climate from 2018 did not help a lot, my college had it the worst, i believe, teachers quit, classes were removed and then the pandemic, online classes were absolute hell), and now, i really don't have the money or time to just start going to college all over again (and really not looking to start my very first student debt), so, i just need some online courses, videos, something that you guys can recommend in order for me to improve my skills and actually try to explore more in graphic design and get a good job. i'm just really sad, the difference in the education levels betweeen countries is finally hitting hard.
any help or advice would be much appreciated, and sorry if there are any typos or grammar error since english is not my first language!!! :)

2024.05.15 19:11 Zed-whyzed Job interview

Every year I interview people for seasonal summer jobs. I usually get a variety of people from barely out of high school, college grads to people who are semi-retired. Although every year I get some very interesting answers or comments from the perspective employees this year I had one that stood out. This was a recent college grad with an art history degree who could not find a job and was recommended by someone who works for my company. After going over with him the job description, expectations, salary, application I asked if he had any questions for me. He said to me “ How many breaks can I take “ Apparently he’s an aspiring influencer and wanted to answer his social media accounts every hour and he’s looking for a job that would allow him the freedom to be on his social and get paid from another job at the same time. Have you ever interviewed someone who gave you an out of the box answer or did you ever give a not so stellar answer on an interview?

2024.05.15 19:09 Earl_of_69 School district budget cuts

ICCSD is doing a lot of things to cut back on spending after going drastically over budget last year, on top of dealing with cuts due to money being diverted to private school vouchers.
One thing I have noticed is not being addressed, is how top-heavy the administration and management has become.
Our superintendent makes over $250K, and the BD superintendent makes over $200K. The BD superintendent has no educational background whatsoever. He's never taught a day, and he's especially not experienced in special education/behavioral development. There are also assistant superintendents specifically for elementary, and secondary. One of which pays $208K, so I assume the other one does as well.
So, we are spending in excess of $700K just on superintendents.
What justifies the need and prices for these positions?
The district chief financial officer has no financial background whatsoever (they moved him from tech). He is currently making about $150K.
There is a warehouse manager making almost $90,000 (He's just a warehouse manager).
The district maintenance department (Physical Plant) used to be run by a Director, and an assistant Director. There was one secretary in the Physical Plant office. This was only 15 years ago. The Physical Plant has since added another assistant Directotrades manager, three district head custodians (one of which is simply a very highly paid substitute Night custodian), 2 project managers, an office manager, a construction support specialist, and an additional secretary. The office manager and construction support specialist were initially hired as secretaries, and these jobs were created for them. They were not posted, applicants were not interviewed.
Physical Plant office was staffed by 3 people. There are now 9 people in this office, costing the district over $500K more than it did 15-20 years ago.
As far as I know, the district is still keeping the former Physical Plant Director on retainer as a consultant, for just over $150K. (Although that might be no longer a thing as of this year.) But, I would like to remind folks that this former Physical Plant Director, had the same job in Des Moines. He was hired by Iowa city while he was being investigated in Des Moines for violating no bid contract regulations and using his own construction company as a consultant. he reportedly refused to cooperate with investigators in Des Moines, and we hired him in the middle of that investigation. he continued to live in Des Moines for the duration of his employment in Iowa city. He also hired his own company as a consultant on construction projects here.
Aside from the Physical Plant, each school is becoming top-heavy in administration. At the junior highs and high schools, there is a principal, 2 assistant principals, a dean of students, an administrative fellow, and a building facilitator. All of these positions are $90K+, and half of them were added in the last 5-10 years. So we're talking about over $500K just for administrators, at each secondary school (that's $3M+ total). What aspects of a school administrators job have gotten so complex that they need so much support administration?
A lot of people in this community know that the school district needs to cut Money, and the most visible thing is the facilities projects. But that is an entirely different source of funds. Those projects are coming from the local option that we, as taxpayers, approved. And while that money absolutely is being wasted in some really crazy ways (mostly form-over-function type stuff, but also really expensive Band-Aids, so to speak, to deal with shortcomings from lowest bid contractors who do a terrible job), that's not the money that needs to be cut, and I'm hoping that this post helps people understand where a lot of this money is going.
Heads up, on top of all the facilities improvements and additions that have happened over the last four years, more is coming. There has been talk of adding indoor athletic facilities (which would obviously come with even more specialized administration).
All this, and I haven't even mentioned food service, athletics, or grounds.
Some individuals have simply gotten themselves into positions, not dissimilar to a politician, or a hospital administrator. Many of these people are connected to each other (and the board) through friendship, family, marriage, or even just being neighbors. Several of them have no background whatsoever in the position they hold.

2024.05.15 19:08 wander-and-wonder How difficult is it to qualify for a Back to Education grant?

I want to do my masters. I’m 28 and I’m scared for my future as it’s been tough to get back into my industry, and I know a masters will help my career as it is a benefit within my industry. I’m struggling to get into full time work again with my degree and a decent amount of experience. Recruitment has said to just keep my head up and keep doing what I’m doing, told me to look after my mental health because it’s tough for everyone right now , but I think I may have a better chance with my masters done. I’m scared for my future. With living expenses, I can’t cover a course right now. I’m already struggling to find a full time position after a few years of good experience in my industry and a degree. My fixed contract ended in October and I feel invisible with my applications each week. The criteria seems a bit vague online. I moved from ireland to England to study my degree and then came home in 2021. Do I still qualify? And can anyone share their experience with a grant?

2024.05.15 19:07 Tylerr_A Why are “traditional engineering” companies so averse to remote work?

I understand a lot of roles are very collaborative or in need of being there in person such as design, test, manufacturing. But for roles that aren’t why are these companies so averse to hiring remotely?
Im mid level mainly work space defense or aircraft, in systems analysis as well as thermal fluids FEA, my role is not collaborative at all. I might need a 15 min discussion then I’m off and can complete my task 100% solo or with the odd teams message. I know the software packages, I’ve done the work a thousand times, I can hit the ground running day one but yet every job and recruiter that’s “desperately hiring” and cant find qualified applicants can’t consider remote work. Even more annoying I’ll be interviewed by a team for an onsite role yet 3/4 the group are interviewing me from home. Huh
On top of that myself and many ppl I know would gladly accept a significant salary decrease if allowed to wfh yet they don’t bite. I had a near offer near Boston for almost $200k, I said I’d take 120 if they approved remote yet no bite. I get the fear assumed in loss of productivity but surely paying folks half the salary is worth that risk.
My theory, these upper level boomers in higher management and director roles are the ones against it. They live and breathe the corporate life. I’ve yet to meet anyone under 50 against remote work.
Rant over

2024.05.15 19:05 TightAsF_ck The BeermoneyUK Bank Switch Offer Guide (AKA The Bankedex) - May 2024

The title of the previous Bankedex has been making people think it only contained offers for NI. So here it is again, with all the current offers and with a more generic title. There are currently 5 active bank switch offers (and only one is specific to Northern Ireland!).
*****************
Here is the the ultimate guide to UK bank switch offers - the collective knowledge of ~140k BeermoneyUK members. Switch your bank account, get a cash reward for doing so. But don't switch your main account, open up a second account and switch that to get the money!

Updated 15/05/2024:

The most commonly asked bank switch questions:
  1. I started to switch to XXX bank before the offer ended, am I still eligible for the bonus?
Yes, usually, most terms will state that a switch just has to be started (or applied for) before the end date or before an offer ends.
  1. Do I have to transfer the required amount in all in one go, and does it matter if I pay money in before my switch is complete?
No and not usually, as long as the amount you pay in adds up to the required amount, and as long as you pay it in before the deadline stated in the terms. There has been one exception to this - Co-op - so check individual terms.
  1. I need to switch "active" direct debits, does a payment need to have been taken before I switch?
According to Nationwide, an active direct debit is one that has been set up or had a payment taken from it in the past 13 months. So no, according to this. But why not just wait for the direct debit to be taken? You'll not have to worry about it then.
https://twitter.com/AskNationwide/status/1442939781491486720
  1. How do I set up and switch an additional Chase current account?
    • See Chase instruction here to open an additional account.
    • The second account will be linked to the same card as your main Chase account.
    • Use the secondary account details and your original card details when switching.
  2. What are the easiest/best direct debits to use for bank switching?
There are many: Paypal, Ebay, Moneybox savings account, Plum savings account, your credit card, Sprive Mortgage auto savings, Wealthify Robo Saving. We recommend ones that save money into an account in your own name. Here’s useful ones that have additional bonuses available via beermoneyuk
Site/App Offer Comment
Park Christmas (Search) Save for Christmas via direct debit
Plum (Search) A very useful direct debit Easy and fast to set up
Sprive (Search) Autosavings for mortgage overpayment direct debit (£5 bonus) Easy and fast to set up
Wealthify (Search) A very useful direct debit (£1/month min) Easy and fast to set up
Questions about Bank Switching should generally be asked here. Posts on the subreddit asking questions about bank switching will probably be removed.

As always with the Bankedex, we need your help.

The post has been updated with the newest offers, and tips commented in the previous Bankedex posts, and those in other posts on beermoneyuk. But it is a difficult task keeping on top of all the questions. Please continue to share your experience with Bank Bribes. I will add questions/answers to this post. Your help is much appreciated - thanks to you all.

Never switched a bank account before?

You should consider it. It is one of the easiest and most efficient ways of earning a little beermoney. It is advised to leave your main bank account alone. Instead, switch a secondary bank account, or open a new account at your current bank to be used just for switching. Recommended steps:
  1. Open a second current account with your main high street bank (must be part of CASS service)
  2. Set up direct debits on the second account (if required).
  3. Add £1 to your second account. This will be transferred to your new account, allowing you to see when the switch has been completed.
  4. Apply for a new account and arrange to switch to your second bank account (sometimes this is during the application process, other times it is after the account is opened).
  5. Let the current account switch service take care of everything.
  6. Make sure all other terms are met (e.g. pay in money if needed).
  7. Receive your bank switching bonus.
You will hear about lots of people rushing through all of the switch bonuses available. These offers have been coming and going for years, my advice is to do an offer that tickles your fancy and try out a new bank. Then, if you decide you do not like your new bank you should sample another bank and get paid again!

Are there some bank accounts worth keeping?

Why yes. Some are quite good, and give ongoing rewards. For example, Club Lloyds gives free Disney Plus. See the "don't leave us please" bank rewards post. Some also give access to the best savings accounts (e.g. regular savers).

General Bank Switch Questions

Current Account Switch Bribes - Why do they offer them?

They want your business. Banks like fighting each other for customers. Most of them know they can't win by highlighting their outdated systems and products, so they fight each other by offering potential customers cash bribes (or equivalent) to switch their "main" bank account.

Can I switch any bank account to get a bribe?

No. You must switch a bank account that is part of The Current Account Switch Service (CASS). Most high street banks are included. But some Neo Banks are not (e.g., Kroo, Revolut, & Monese are not included). You should try to avoid switching your main bank account. You can always open an additional account just to switch.
See here for a full list of CASS banks.

Is it too much hassle?

No. The Current Account Switch Service (CASS) makes switching your account between most banks smooth and effortless. You do not have to do anything apart from apply for and set up a new account at a different bank and tell them you want to switch your account to them. Everything is transferred automatically (except recurring card payments).

Is there the best route to sample all the banks with switch offers?

Do the offer ending soonest first. Then you might switch again. If you complete all offers in this post, you could earn yourself >£1000.

Some of these end soon. Will the offers come back?

Banks have been offering bribes on and off for many years. We can't predict the future. But this is not a new thing.

How long does a bank switch take?

Approximately one week.

Do I have to switch my main account?

You could. But you don't have to. Many people have second bank accounts. One option may be to open up a second account with your current high street bank, add some direct debits to this second account and then switch it to the new bank you want to try out. On the sub, people also like Starling or Monzo as they are easy to set up (but you might want to switch back to them at the end - their functionality wins vs any usual high street bank).
High-street banks also let you open multiple accounts. If you already have an account with one, you might want to open an additional one with your current bank first (Halifax, NatWest etc are reported to allow several current accounts and to be fast to open).

I have savings accounts at the same bank as my current account. Can I still switch to this current account?

Yes. Only the current account will be closed (some linked regular savers may be converted to normal savings accounts). You might want to consider if switching to a secondary account is a better option.

I have linked savers attached to my current account. Can I still switch it?

Possibly.

Which banks let me open a second bank account?

Most of them.

Do I need to activate the card on the account I am going to switch?

Just do it anyway. Some banks require it

What details do I need to switch?

  • Sort code and account number.
  • Debit card information.
  • Usually, but not always, 2 active DDs on the account you are switching.

Do you need to have money in the account you are switching?

No. But it might be a good idea - this will allow you to see when the switch happens (i.e. when the money is transferred!).

I do not have a bank card with my old current account as it is very very old, can I still switch it?

Most online forms require card details, but you can usually switch such accounts over the phone.

My new bank has not given me my account number (e.g. NatWest).

Usually, these are sent via post/email when you sign up. But some banks don't have the account numbers on the card, or maybe letters get lost in the post. If this happens, wait for the card to arrive and contact their support. If you get a bot on the chat thing, type "speak to a human" repeatedly.

My new bank account is a premium account and it has a fee. Do I need to keep paying for this?

No. You can downgrade the account. But you should probably wait until you have been paid the bonus.

I don't like my new bank, do I need to wait for the bank card before switching again?

Yes. See question above. Most banks require the card details of your existing account.

I made an account just to switch. Can I switch before my new bank card arrives?

Best not to. You are asked to enter the debit card information as part of the process.

The offer says I have to pay in £xxxx. Does it have to be in one go?

No. You can transfer in and out. The total sent in has to be equal to or greater than the stated amount. You should be careful with this though, sending money in and out of an account can trigger anti-fraud measures.

The offer says I have to pay in £xxxx. Can I pay it in before the switch completes?

Yes. You can pay it before, after, or during. You can manually transfer it, or it can be transferred automatically from your old account.

I've been asked to verify my identity. Is this normal?

Sometimes automated checks fail. If this happens, you may be asked to manually verify your application by visiting a branch or sending in a copy of your ID.

I switched from Monzo/Starling and want to return, can I?

Starling does not let you return within 12 months. With Monzo, it's possibly a shorter one month that you have to wait.

Do I have to switch direct debits?

Check individual offer terms.

What is an "Active" direct debit?

An active direct debit is usually one where a payment had been taken in the last 13 months. But some bank switch terms require direct debits to have been paid out of the account. If an offer requires an active direct debit, it's safer to switch to an account that has already paid out direct debits.**

What are good direct debits to set up on a second account?

There are many: Paypal, Ebay, Moneybox savings account, Plum savings account, your credit card, Sprive Mortgage auto savings, Wealthify Robo Saving.

I recently switched to XXX Bank, and I do not like it. Can I switch again?

Yes. If you are not happy with the new service, you may want to switch to a new bank that will pay you to give them a try.

Do I have to stick with my new bank for any length of time?

No.

If I switch away, will the bank claw back the bonus?

Very unlikely. They would have to specify this in their terms, and none have ever done so.

My switch is complete, but I have not yet received my bonus. Will I still get the bonus if I switch this account before it is paid?

Probably not.

My most recent switch is not quite complete, but I have already received the bonus. Can I start another switch?

You should probably wait for the switch to complete.

Can I get more than one bribe from each bank?

Sometimes. With some banks (e.g. Nationwide), you can get a bonus for switching one sole and one joint current account. Other banks will pay you to switch again, as long as you have not had a bonus in a specified amount of time. You will need to check individual offer terms.

XXX Bank gave me a bonus before, can I get a bonus again?

You need to check the individual offer terms.

Will this affect my credit score?

Credit scores are a funny thing, What is more important is what is actually in your credit file. Obviously, if you apply for an overdraft then it will affect your "credit score". However, if you do not have an overdraft or you make sure that you have paid off any overdraft before switching banks, then a single current account switch should not negatively impact your credit score. Nevertheless, typically all major banks (excepting Monzo and Starling) do a hard credit search, and this will be recorded on your file. If you plan on applying for a new mortgage soon then you may wish to exercise caution in switching between a load of banks. This is because the hard searches performed by banks will appear on your report and may have an effect for 6-12 months.

Which banks do hard searches and which do soft searches??

See here. Most banks do hard searches.
  • Hard searches: Bank of Scotland (first account only), Barclays, Co-op, Clydesdale, Halifax (1st account only), First Direct, HSBC, Lloyds (1st account only), Monzo, Nationwide, NatWest, RBS, Santander, TSB, Ulster, Virgin Money.
  • Soft searches: Starling, Metro Bank, and Chase

I have a bad credit score, will I be accepted to XXX bank?

Unfortunately, we do not know the acceptance criteria of the banks. You might be unlucky with one bank, but lucky with another.

My application was rejected. Why?

Nobody here knows. You could try appealing, but your only way to find out more is to contact the bank.

After switching my account, I still have online banking with my old provider. Do I need this?

No. You do not need to keep the online access (you could shut it down). But you may wish to retain these details in case your old bank suddenly appears with an offer that makes you want to switch back. Or open up a savings account.

Has anyone else been paid for switching to XXX Bank yet?

Check the terms of the offer you signed up for. Some banks have long deadlines and stick to them (e.g. Santander, TSB). Some are quicker. If you haven't been paid within the stated terms, then you should contact the bank's support.

2024.05.15 19:04 RDT6250 Multiple recruiters reaching out for the same exact positions

Hi all,
I'm currently on the job market and I've been getting the same exact job positions from different recruiting agencies.
How do you guys handle this? Do you normally just stick with the first recruiter who brought up the position? Or do you submit your application for the same position from different recruiters?
I have always stuck with the first recruiter and I would always tell the following recruiters that I am already working with said first recruiter for the same exact position. I'm just trying to not lead anyone along and save these recruiter's time and effort.
But now I'm wondering if it would somehow up my chances/visibility if multiple recruiters submit my application.
Thoughts?

2024.05.15 19:02 TwiceTautologist LPN refresher

So I'm that travel nurse who graduated from a diploma mill. But it gets worse. I also started school the Fall before the pandemic hit and basically only had one term before we all got sent home while faculty miserably failed trying to set up a zoom curriculum so that they could keep all of our tuition. The most common thing I heard from teachers was something along the lines of if we were in a classroom I could really show you xxxx or normally in class we would practice this... So they needed nurses so bad then that my FIRST job was as a traveler and I was awful! I want to be competent, I love learning, I love science and my school (CDI in Vancouver BC) really lacked science and pharmacology in the syllabus. They were a huge waste of money and shouldn't be training nurses in-person nor online. So my question is, can anyone recommend a good LPN refresher course? Especially if it's US based? I'm from the States and would like to go back home eventually. TYIA!

2024.05.15 19:01 CockStephen Educator looking to transition into IT/Cybersecurity

I am a secondary teacher in the midwest. I am currently looking at options to transition out of the education field. One of the few things I’ve enjoyed about education is using educational applications. I taught a class on the basics of coding (scratch) and enjoyed learning by teaching myself. During the pandemic, I took on various roles helping our district troubleshoot tech issues as we transitioned to remote learning. In short, I would love to explore the idea of moving into the IT world. Cybersecurity has always been an interesting topic/field. I am hoping to avoid going back to college (already sunk my GI Bill and a 20K in a Master’s program). I like the idea of learning on my own, perhaps in the form of a certification. Are their any certification pathways that you have had success with (particularly in CS)? What does the job pool look like for people who pursue this outside of a college program? Any general advice? TIA

I applied to a job that had a sign that said immediate hire, they made me fill out my application in person, and she said she gonna call me in two days. Telling my parents this they said they should’ve hired me on the spot. Am I worrying over nothing?

2024.05.15 18:58 ItIsWhatItIsmeh-_- Am I being irrational?

I’m going off to college. And I have shit luck, so my brother is soon starting middle school, my sister is taking out loans for her MBA and my other sister is buying a house. My dad is in jail and requires money every week so only one person left, my mom. And we’re not rich, like at all. She barely has a job.
I’ve been going through a very deep depression and last week I finally aired out YEARS of suppressed emotions to my mom in a very angry manner because she’s the “I never did that” kind of parent. It coincidentally happened when me and her were arguing over my college accommodation price because she wants me to live in a catholic shelter, with mass, and a whole application process that includes reading and being tested on philosophies by some catholic philosopher. I don’t want to do that because it would genuinely interfere with my uni work and I HATE religion for personal reasons which also relate to me not having any kind of relationship with my mom. Example: I have mildy severe anxiety and she always says that I can pray it away.
My sisters are convinced that I refuse to go to that accommodation because I’m doing it to spite her (which honestly, if I wanted to spite her I could do way worse, I’m not a goody two shoes). I have found the cheapest accommodation you can find in the country, bust she refuses saying 300$ is the highest she can go (which is crazy, it’s 2024, what is that cheap). The one I found is 450$ (if I convert the currency) and my sister also agreed that’s the cheapest we can find. But she is on mom’s side so…
The accommodation pays for food, insurance and rent, and in exchange we have to have some sort of duty during each Sunday mass. I genuinely don’t even believe it still works, just sounds too good to be true, and I have shit luck, I don’t wanna end up in some shady place. I also forgot to mention she found it through a friend, and the most recent document is from 2021.
So am I being unreasonable and should I just take it? I mean if would remove most of the financial burden on everyone. I just feel like I’d be miserable, which I already am lol.
Second post of the day, I’m on a very good roll today 🥰

2024.05.15 18:57 tswaves Any lightweight Windows alternatives to "MS Todo"?

I loved using Microsoft Todo since it was so lightweight and easy to keep running on my PC, but I've since moved into a Windows Server environment and MS Store Apps will not run.
I've been looking specifically for a simple 'Todo List's app that doesn't require a paid subscription, bloated features, and runs on low resources. It's been harder to find than I would have thought.
Are there any simple lightweight applications specifically for Windows and not online only that work well or are recommended?
ToDo was perfect but I just can't get it installed. I'm hoping someone else has found something very similar.
