2024.05.28 13:15 M2cPanda Slavoj Žižek: Israel must recognise Palestine and face the truth
Slavoj Zizek: Israel must recognize Palestine and face the truth SLAVOJ ŽIŽEK May 28, 2024 8 minutes reading time A Palestinian state also binds the Palestinians to international law. In the assessment of a Palestinian state, however, I do not agree with Rushdie. When he mentions the Taliban, my first association is: But how did the Taliban come to power in Afghanistan? Afghanistan was a relatively open state receptive to modernization – until 1978, when the Communists took power through a coup and the Soviet Union militarily intervened to support their dwindling power, while the USA and Pakistan supplied weapons to the Muslim resistance (the Taliban were organized by Pakistani intelligence), and the rest is history. It was therefore foreign interventions (Soviet Union, Pakistan, USA) that pushed a relatively peaceful and pluralistic country into fundamentalist authoritarian rule. And what similarly fuels Hamas' brutal resistance in the occupied territories of Palestine is the situation that Israel does not allow Palestinians under its control to organize as autonomous political actors. In a way, the Palestinians have "Hamasized" under Israeli policy in recent years, which the Israeli government has used to portray the brutal actions against Palestinians and Israel's expansion "from the river to the sea" as acts of self-defense. For this reason, the recognition of Palestine as a state is the only way not only to stop Israel's military terror against civilians but also to force the Palestinians themselves to act as a legitimate political force bound by international laws and rules. Recently, there have been some unexpected positive surprises in this direction. It is not only the protesting students who are active: Spain and Ireland want to recognize Palestine, Norway has now taken this step, and other Western states are preparing to do the same. On May 20, 2024, the French Foreign Ministry backed the International Criminal Court and supported the examination of arrest warrants against Israeli and Hamas leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza and Israel. Days later, Belgium and Germany joined in with their commitment to the ICC. In his request for an arrest warrant, the ICC Chief Prosecutor does not make direct comparisons between Israel and Hamas but accuses both of committing crimes. Prosecuting the crimes is necessary to condemn both the terror of the Israeli military against the Palestinian civilian population and to bind the Palestinians to international law. But it also has far-reaching consequences for Israel and the Western world. “No wonder the Biden administration is threatening ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan with sanctions – as US Senator Lindsey Graham warned: “If they do this to Israel, we’re next!” Graham is right: So far, the International Criminal Court has been focused on countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, but now it wants to apply the so-called “rules-based international order” universally and without exceptions. I find these proceedings important precisely because they do not merely use the proclamation of universal human rights as a mask for Western dominance: They take them more seriously than they were meant to be. The threat does not only come from the hypocritical advocacy of universal rights by the West: All major power blocs play the same hypocritical game in one way or another. And here the left gets confused: In a form of “false universality,” aggressors and victims are placed on the same level. Here is a recent incident where I was ashamed of the Slovenian left. When the cargo ship Borkum landed in the Slovenian coastal town of Koper on May 23, rumors spread that the ship was carrying weapons for Israel. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators demanded that the Slovenian government prohibit the Borkum from landing in Koper. However, when a government agency declared that there were no weapons on the ship, whose final destination was Israel, 43 protest organizations published the following statement: “Regardless of whether the destination of the weapons is Israel or the Czech Republic and from there perhaps Ukraine, these are weapons for the armed forces of imperialist states that do not contribute to peace and do not defend working people. We, the signatories of this statement, stand for peace and are against rearmament. The trade in weapons for imperialist wars is unacceptable.” I strongly reject the underlying equation of the Israeli destruction (not only) of the Gaza Strip with the defense of Ukraine against the Russian attack, that is, the designation of Ukraine's desperate struggle for survival as an "imperialist war." Therefore, Putin's recent pledge to support a “free Palestine” is a lie carried by a factual truth – it serves to blur the promises of a "free Ukraine," which have been brutally violated by Russia. Is the action of the International Court of Justice ineffective? But there are signs that give some hope. On May 24, 2024, the International Court of Justice, the United Nations' highest court, ordered Israel to “immediately halt” its military offensive in Rafah. The ICJ's judgments are final and binding, but the court has no mechanism to enforce them. Here, cynics have an easy time: such major public condemnations are empty gestures, some say, that can in no way significantly influence the situation on the battlefield. But in this case, such a cynical attitude is misplaced. We can all see how the pro-Israel establishment has reacted with great concern to the ICC arrest warrant and the efforts to recognize Palestine. I point here to a thought by the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, precisely formulated: “When the authorities find it useful to tell the truth, it is because they can find no better lie. The truth that comes out of the mouths of the responsible parties immediately turns into a lie supported by the facts.” This is largely the case with Western countries that express their "concern" about the violence of the IDF in Gaza and the West Bank: Despite all criticism of the Israeli government, they continue to supply weapons to the Israeli military. However, Sartre's thesis is not universal. There are ways of telling the truth that do not turn into lies – the recognition of Palestine as a state and compliance with a possible ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu as a war criminal are such cases. In today's inflation of solemn declarations, we should never forget that not all words are equal, that there are still words that are not only factually true but also have the effect of truth. About truth and bearing the truth. Most of us know the scene in the film “A Few Good Men” (Rob Reiner, 1992), when Tom Cruise (playing the defense lawyer) confronts Jack Nicholson (playing the Guantanamo Bay Colonel Jessep) with his demand “I want the truth!” and Nicholson replies: “You can’t handle the truth!” This answer is more ambiguous than it seems: It should not simply be understood as a claim that most of us are too weak to handle the brutal reality of things. When someone asks a witness of the Holocaust about the truth and they respond: “You can’t handle the truth!”, it should not only be understood as a claim that most of us are unable to process the horrors of the Holocaust. On a deeper level, those who were unable to handle the truth were the Nazi perpetrators themselves: They were unable to accept the fact that their society was permeated by a comprehensive antagonism, and to avoid this insight, they engaged in genocidal activities against the Jews as if killing the Jews would restore a harmonious social body. And therein lies the final lesson from the atrocities in Gaza and Ukraine: We do not just flee into a fantasy to avoid confrontation with reality, we also flee into reality (of brutal acts) to avoid the truth about the futility of our fantasies. Israel flees into the destruction of the Gaza Strip to escape the truth about its predicament in the Middle East, just as Russia flees into the destruction of Ukraine to escape the truth about the futility of its Eurasian ideological fantasies. The foolish wisdom “Don’t just talk, do something!” should be reversed: “Don’t just do something, say the right word! Tell the truth!” |

2024.05.27 19:36 juicymeat21 Best cheesecake i’ve made
really smooth and creamy submitted by juicymeat21 to Baking [link] [comments] recipe is as follows - 4 8oz packages of block cream cheese, do not use whipped or spreadable, just regular cream cheese 1 cup sugar 2/3 cup sour cream vanilla extract to taste lemon extract to taste(not required) small pinch of salt 4 eggs make sure everything that stays in the fridge is room temp, eggs, sour cream, and cream cheese all need to be room temp. Start with cream cheese in the mixer, mix it till smooth. Don’t do it to much or else you’ll put to much air into which can lead to cracking. Gradually add sugar, and mix till combined with the cream cheese. Scrape down sides and gradually add sour cream, scraping down the bowl every so often. add extracts and salt. Finish off by cracking the eggs individually and beating them lightly before adding to batter. make sure to scrape sides down each to you add an egg. graham cracker crust- 2 cups of graham crackers crushed 2 tablespoons of sugar 1 tablespoon of brown sugar 8 tablespoons of melted butter shape crust around the pan Put crust into 325F degree oven for about 8-10 minutes before putting batter in the crust baking it- preheat oven to 325 and put the batter into the precooked crust, keep it in there for about 50ish minutes before opening your oven, a sudden drop in temp can cause cracking. Mine took around 60 minutes to fully cook but not all ovens are the same so hit it with a wooden spoon around the edge of the pan. If the cake bounces in ripples, it’s not done. if it bounces as one complete thing it’s done. It may sound confusing so i’ll link a video at the end of the post. Topping- Great value cherry and blueberry pie fillings how to tell if it’s done cooking |

Still some of the worst wrestling aroundWritten By: Alaric KingStaff writer An all together better show but the bar was set so low to begin with that I don’t think it truly matters.January 14th, 2022There was one thing I forgot to mention last week and I honestly don’t know how I forgot and that is the main title theme of KFW. As I sat in my house this time, on my comfy chair, in my man cave I was taken aback by it once again. I would imagine that the average person would automatically assume, given the product, that the theme song of KFW would be akin to the theme song of the Teletubbies, the Wiggles, or Sesame Street. Something whimsical and fun for the kids to bop their heads too and that would make a parent want to rip out their hair because they have heard it one too many times. (No, just me). Well it isn’t. The theme song is, hold onto your butts for this one, Across the Nation by The Union Underground. The juxtaposition between the song and the KFW wrestlers is jarring. They did at least add in videos of the wrestlers wrestling though this week. Last week it was just still images of the wrestlers. However some of the footage they used is confusing. On one hand you have Samhains, “Death Valley,” but then you have Earl Hunter looking under the announcers table. All while the music is telling us to… get it on, lets get it on… Again it's like the rest of KFW it seems. Daniel had a song in his head that he wanted to use and even though it didn’t make any sense for the company he now owns, he uses it anyway. Not caring. So you get a moment where the lyrics are, “It’s the sex, the gods, the fake, the frauds, they’re messing with me,” and you are getting shots of The Black Sheep or The Grumbling (the Furby). My wife was in the room this week. A rare occurrence and she laughed at various moments in the 30 second intro. That is not a good sign and I must ask again, what does Daniel want KFW to be? Enough of my ranting because it could go on forever. Ask my wife… No, wait, she’s gone. Left during the first segment after laughing at the guy's costume. Anyway, here is my review of KFW Episode 2. KFW Episode 2— Full results and gradesSegment: The Jockey Returns to KFW
The guy has something that most of the wrestlers in KFW don’t. An it factor. He also cut a pretty ok promo. Better than anything from last week. He of course started with, “It's good to be home,” which got another round of cheers. He then went on to say that he left KFW because he felt like he had reached his upper ceiling. He had done everything. So he packed his bags and went on the road. Feeling homesick quite often. Not for Sioux Falls but for KFW itself. However, he couldn’t return until he knew what his next move would be in KFW. One day he awoke and knew what that was and mere hours later, before he could call Charles Graham, the news broke that Daniel was buying KFW. He felt betrayed by Charles Graham who built this promotion into something to be celebrated. Where wrestling could be for anyone or any age. So he didn’t call. He didn’t return but as he kept moving the feeling gnawed at him. Nagged. He wasn’t done. He had to return. So against his better judgment he picked up the phone and called Daniel. The rest is history. What those plans are… he of course won’t spoil just yet… However, everyone will learn very very soon. The promo was good but it was short, it was also a promo that we had seen before in some shape or another for decades of wrestling when a wrestler leaves a promotion only to find his way back years later. It was, however, a great way to start the show despite those flaws. Black Sheep Defeated Ben Anna in 7:31
The next five minutes was spent beating up Ben Anna on the ground (perhaps he didn’t want to go through the effort of picking him up twice) before he picked him up and hit the Baa Bomb. I don’t think Ben Anna got a lick of offense in. I get it KFW doesn’t have a true monster heel since Earl Hunter is off playing looney tunes but if Daniel wants one he should hire someone new instead of forcing Black Sheep in the role. The guy can’t stand more than 5’8 and weigh more than 140 pounds in reality. Still not the worst match that KFW has put on. Segment: Lou Tennant comes out and demands answers
So after the match Lou Tennant came out and demanded answers from The Black Sheep and what he did to him last week. The poke in the eyes was uncalled for, he says and winning a match in a dirty fashion doesn’t help matters. He needs to do better, be better. He gets why he is angry but he needs to find a better way to reach the results he wants. The Black Sheep demanded a mic and the tattooed gentlemen who works the mixing table gave him one. The Black Sheep then went on to say that his whole life people pushed him to the side, ignored him, shunned him. For no apparent reason. He was just born to be an outcast. Even in KFW he had never gotten much respect. Being pushed to the side and being made to lose ninety percent of his matches. He is tired of it. No more will people shun him. No more will people not respect him. He is going to get his due. Lou tells him that he will help The Black Sheep see the light and The Black Sheep tells him that he will help Lou see the darkness. Overall a solid promo from both men. I think the only problem from the promo is that there was a lot of rehash from last week. Black Sheep cut a promo, if you will recall, and a lot of that ground was rehashed here but we will see where it goes now that both guys have laid their cards on the table. Segment: Human Hotdog is a star
So the promo took place inside of a confession booth. The Human Hotdogs suit is now cracked in places. Small bits here and there are torn off. Not a lot of damage right now, just minor but you can see where KFW is no doubt going with this. It's a really nice touch and conveys to us, suit or no, that he is battle damaged after last week. He is talking to Father Charles who asks, “What is bothering you my child?” The Human Hotdog says that after last week's attack he finds himself battered. When he got up the day afterward he felt like what he imagined a hot dog in a corn dog feels like. Heavy. He could barely stand and he had a headache and for the first time he wondered if he could be a fighting champion. This feeling persisted longer than he would care to admit until he looked in the mirror and realized that his dog wasn't finished cooking yet. He is a fighting champion. It's who he was born to be and it is going to be who he is until someone takes a bite out of him. Father Charles asks, “Are you sure this is the road you want to go down? It’s ok to rest from time to time.” The Human Hotdog stands up and says, “Just tell Daniel to find me a match for tomorrow.” The promo had its silly dialogue but The Human Hotdog sold it like he believed it. In the wrong hands that could have made the whole thing more silly. However, it wasn’t. At least not for me. Do yourself a favor and try to find this promo later. In these write-ups I give you the cliff notes so there is a lot of what makes this promo great that wasn’t mentioned here. Trust me you will not be disappointed. Segment: Birdman calls out the Human Hotdog
Afterwards KFW announcers said that match would be on next and not in the main event. What? Ok. Human Hotdog defeated Bird Man to retain the KFW A* Championship in 15:24
He threw the Human Hotdog into the corner and hit him with a drop kick before getting up on the top rope but as he went for his finisher, “The Ares,” The Human Dog rolled out of the way. Yes, with the suit, it looked clunky but he got it done. Birdman, so mad by this, picked up the Human Hotdog (I am guessing because he can’t get up himself) and The Human Hotdog elbowed him in the stomach before running and bouncing off the ropes. Birdman stepped out of the way of his attack and hit him with a German Suplex. Again it looked awkward given the way BirdMan has to hold the suit but it's insane he was able to do it anyway. Birdman then picked him up to give him another one when The Human Hotdog stepped on his foot, screamed, and hit Birdman with a Blue Thunder Bomb. He pinned him for the 1…2… kick out. I honestly thought that should have been the end. The man hit a blue thunder bomb in a giant hotdog costume. The end came quickly though as he picked Birdman up off the floor and tried to hit him with a Mystery Meat. Birdman reversed it, climbed up the top rope, and tried to hit an Ares. Again Human Hotdog rolled out of the way but this time rolled Birdman up into a pin. Birdman looked at Human Hotdog but instead of looking stunned or angry he laughed. Teasing Human Hotdog for how close he came in beating him for the title. I obviously skipped around. Talked about the best bits but the match was better than anything KFW put on yet and Birdman proves he can put on a match and redeemed himself from that 0 I gave him last week. Earl The Hunter defeats Pete Pickleman in 1:25
Segment: Earl the Hunter will find Quacksie
To KFW’s credit I can’t tell if it was part of the show or if he legit couldn’t breath. I believe it was real though as the skit lasted too long before The Grumbling motioned for Billy to continue the match. It ended with Billy hitting Greg Wright with the ink and The Octopus hitting the spinning kick from the top rope. I wish I had more to say but it was such a mixed bag I am really at a loss. So let's just move on to the best segment of the night. Segment: The Jockey returns to meet with an old friend
Billy asks The Jockey what he expected. As he left the company he got into an altercation with Charles Graham and he didn’t exactly leave on good terms with the rest of them. He is surprised he even came back. The Jockey says that there are a lot of complicated reasons why he returned to KFW but all he has to know right now is that KFW is his home. He could run as far away as he wanted but KFW was an itch he couldn’t escape from. He said that he wanted to call Billy, to talk, but he felt bad for how things transpired. He wasn’t even sure he would answer the phone and could Billy blame him for that. Looking at how things stand right now he may have been right. Rest assured though he never forgot where he came from. It's at his name that Octopus stands up and walks over. They could be friends again and The Octopus can even join them. The Jockey stretches out his hand but they don’t reach out to shake back. After a time The Jockey says, “Shake my hand. Come on boys. Won’t you shake this poor sinner's hand?” Billy looks at the Octopus and surprisingly The Octopus is the first one to shake his hand. Afterwards Billy does the same. The Jockey says they will talk later about what is to come to KFW. His plans for the future. As he turns to leave Billy says, “The handshake was one of forgiveness. I can’t, however, be your friend.” The Jockey lowers his head and chuckles, “Then there's just one more thing I must tell you Billy…” He turns around and beams Billy with his riding cane right in the chest and as Fabolous Octopus looks down at his friend in horror The Jockey hits him in the temple with it. The Octopus goes down on his knees and The Jockey looks at the crowd and points at him. “Can you believe this guy? Tougher than he looks.” He turns back to the Octopus and hits him on the top of the head before unleashing on him over and over again with the riding cane to his skull. The Octopus sells this so well that for a minute I was pleading for someone to come out and break this thing up. After sometime Billy pushes himself up onto his hands and knees and it's then that The Jockey bends down and grabs him by the mask, wrenching his head up. He tells him that Billy is a fool. He came here tonight offering friendship. He and Billy could have done great things together but he threw it away. The truth is though he doesn’t need Billy. He has friends. Friends that are better than he or any KFW wrestler will ever be and he can’t wait for him to meet them. After a moment he says, “Why make you wait though?” Music hits. It's so different from anything KFW has had so far. It's ominous, almost haunting, like something you might hear on a ghost tour. He turns Billy's head to face the entrance way and out walks Naomi The Rose. The first woman has arrived in KFW. She enters the ring and bends down to Billy’s eye level. In a thick southern accent she says, “Good Night, Sugar.” She then stands up and kicks him in the face with her high heel and he collapses. Why this didn’t end the show is beyond me? Will old fans of KFW be interested in this shift… no… but it's needed. I also think Daniel may actually be doing the right thing here as KFW, at least with this episode, seems to be doing a segment like this but also has Earl the Hunter wanting to draw out Quacksie with a magical Piano or whatever. So he is mixing the old with the new and I am curious to see how this goes. Segment: Samhain promo
Samhain Defeated Chi Sperger in 14:56
Just going to add the next segment in here as this is getting longer then I would like already. Samhain attacked Chi Sperger and Human Hotdog ran down to break it up. Samhain escaped out the backdoor of the church. I give it a 5/100. Chi Sperger seemed like he didn’t even know Samhain was going to attack him afterwards but he must have because they had The Human Hotdogs music ready to go. Eh… Lou Tennant Defeated Battering Lamb in 3:56
It was pitiful and it was bad. That was until “Bad Egg” decided to once again try to get him up and he did so. This time the crowd applauded for his success. That is when things went bad. Clam Strong JR got “Bad Egg” on the mat instead, got on the top rope, and hit a stomp but it looked wrong, it looked stiff, and “Bad Egg” was obviously in very real pain. The match ended quickly after that with "Bad Egg" somehow locking in the Chicken Wing. Segment: Chicken “Bad Egg” McCluck calls out The Human Hotdog
