2024.05.15 12:54 lameazz87 I hate the way people view NA work.

So I'm trying so hard to get out of this line of work because im burnt out and i hate it. I've spent weeks crafting resumes, putting in applications, putting together a portfolio, preparing research on companies, and coming up with ways to articulate how my skills can align with jobs I can apply to. I applied to a simple customer relations job in insurance sales. I went to the interview and the guy pulled up my resume and seen I was a CNA and I could tell he was immediately done w the interview. It didn't matter that I had been a prior marketing manager. He asked how long ago the marketing experience was. When i told him it wad about 5 years ago he seemed agitated. He told me CNA skills didn't transfer over to insurance. I explained how in a hospital setting there is a massive amount of customer service that goes along with nursing assistant duties. We are generally the first ones who encounter and deal with upset family and patients. We have to be very good at deescalating people and effectively communicating. He didn't want to hear it. I don't think he believed it. I think people just see CNA and think "poop wipers". I fear I'll never get to leave this job for a more prestigious position. Especially at my age (36). I did this because I thought I wanted to do nursing, but I don't anymore ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ. Has anyone ever gotten out? How did you do it? Where did you go?

2024.05.15 02:27 tothemoon543 Applying to accelerated nursing programs in the Bay Area; should I retake a class for an A?

So Iโ€™m applying to accelerated nursing programs and a masters entry program in my area (Bay Area) this summer. My stats are: 1.5 years of CNA experience working at a childrenโ€™s hospital, 50+ hours of hospital shadowing, and more healthcare related volunteering experiences. Aโ€™s in all my prerequisites except for one class, chemistry. 3.91 undergraduate gpa. Iโ€™m studying my butt off for the teas and plan to get a 90+% grade.
My options are this summer I can work full time and move to a prestigious hospital, where Iโ€™m making a lot more money and can get my patient care hours up to 1,000 hours. Itโ€™s been a goal of mine to work at this hospital and it would look great on my resume. I am in communication with a recruiter who offered me a position.
Or I can retake chemistry for an A and stay at my current job. Chem is Monday-Thursday. Then, Iโ€™d have a 4.0 GPA, which I feel like is baseline in my area. Iโ€™m really insecure about the B I have in chemistry, which factors into my pre-requisite GPA.
To those who have applied to nursing school and know about the process, what is more valuable, getting my pre-requisite GPA up to a 4.0 or getting more diverse work experience at a prestigious hospital?
TL;DR: Applying to accelerated nursing programs in the Bay Area; should I retake a class for an A?

2024.05.14 23:06 leashyb My first patient code.

Next month will be 5 years that I have been a Registered Nurse.
In honor of that, Iโ€™d like to share one (of many I have had) career defining momentsโ€ฆmy first patient code.
I had been a RN for maybe 6 months and was working overnights from 7pm to 7:30am. I had just come on to shift and received report for my patients when the son of one of them called and asked to speak with me.
He goes on to explain that heโ€™s concerned for his Mom because she hadnโ€™t had much to eat or drink in the couple days she had been a patient with us. He was also concerned about her ability to communicate with staff effectively as she was older and had multiple strokes that left her forgetting a lot of her English. Instead, she tended to mumble in her native languageโ€ฆPolish.
After speaking with him, I immediately looked up key words in Polish I knew I would need if I was going to be able to connect with her the same way I do all my other patients.
I looked up the Polish word for nurse. Pielฤ™gniarka.
Next, I looked up the word for pain. Bรณl.
Medicine. Medycyna.
Potato. Ziemniak.
Water. Woda.
Potato seems random, but in my conversation with her son, he said her favorite food was mashed potatoes (mine too!) and thatโ€™s what she had ordered for dinner earlier that was still sitting on her table to eat.
When the time came and I entered her room, I found her lying in bed, seemingly bored, but curious as to who I was. I introduced myself as her nurse using the word I had just looked up and she greeted me with a smile.
The next 10-15 minutes after had her and I laughing together as I haphazardly tried communicating with her using broken Polish and hand gestures. You could tell there was a language barrier, but it didnโ€™t stop either of us from getting our point across, and the giggling from us both lightened the mood.
I remember feeding her the mashed potatoes and hearing her go, โ€œMmmmmmmโ€ as she swallowed them.
I remember her declining the โ€œwodaโ€ I kept offering.
Then I remember her clutching at her hip and writhing in pain. That wasnโ€™t a shock considering she was there with a broken hip awaiting surgery, but had to be off her regularly prescribed blood thinners for a while first. I asked if she had pain and she nodded yes. I asked if she wanted pain medicine and she said yes. I gave it to her and watched her settle back down until she began itching her arms motioning to me that she was uncomfortable. I massaged lotion into both of her arms as she sighed of relief and said, โ€œVery good! Very goodโ€ taking both of my hands into hers to thank me.
I smiled back and said that she was welcome. Knowing she was feeling better, I went to round on other patients, occasionally peeking in to see how she was doing. After an hour or so, I went back in her room and saw that she had fallen asleep. I fixed her nasal cannula as it had fallen down from her ears and I checked her foley to make sure the tubing wasnโ€™t getting kinked. I made sure she was covered with her blanket so she wouldnโ€™t be cold. Hospitals are always so coldโ€ฆ
I went to another patientโ€™s room. 2 minutes later, one my CNAโ€™s came to me saying they just went in her room and she wasnโ€™t breathing.
What? How?
I just came from there and she had been sleeping peacefully. There were no signs of distress.
What do you mean she isnโ€™t breathing?
I ran to her room. I checked for a pulse. No pulse.
Panic set in. I quickly confirm sheโ€™s a full code and my staff and I jumped into action.
One of us got the crash cart. One of us paged for a code. One of us started compressions while the other ambu bagged her.
Suddenly a bunch of staff are at my side as we all fall into our assigned roles.
I remember those compressions I did on her. No one ever talks about the trauma that CPR does to a personโ€™s bodyโ€ฆ
How the ribs crack like uncooked pasta underneath your hands.
After rounds of CPR, we managed to get a pulse back and transferred her straight to the ICU where she coded again.
We resumed our roles. We must have tried for over 30 minutes.
She wasnโ€™t coming back.
The family (her son and daughter) had been contacted and the doctor called it.
The rest of that night was a blur to me. I had other patients to take care of, so I went back to my unit until the family had arrived and asked to speak with me.
I told them everything that happened from the first moment I walked in to her room. I showed them my chicken scratch notes of the polish words I looked up. I explained that I had no explanation for what could have happened as I saw no signs that she was in danger. And then I broke down crying apologizing profusely feeling like I had completely failed her and them.
Suddenly the son hugged me, then the daughter. They both thanked me for doing what I did for their mother, stating that most people wouldnโ€™t have even taken the time to look up Polish words. Then he said something Iโ€™ll never forget. He said she knew her time was coming as earlier that day she mentioned to them both that she would be going โ€œhomeโ€ soon.
To this day I wish I knew what happened. To this day I try to think about what signs I could have missed. To this day I wonder if I could have done anything differently.
Iโ€™ll never forget her, and I think of her often hoping her last moments here provided some bit of love and comfort.

2024.05.13 15:49 Anxious-Condition-57 Experience?

Does having experiences like many years ER Tech on your resume and maybe even CNA during nursing school have a chance to boost your initial salary as a BSN RN? Please be very specific!

2024.05.13 04:26 Choice-Tree-1209 Conflicted on quitting CNA job before graduating/student internship

Iโ€™ve been a CNA for 6 years and Iโ€™ve honestly hated the last 4 years or so of it. I transitioned from inpatient hospice which I absolutely loved to big hospitals. Right now, I have a PRN job that requires a minimum of two 12 hour shifts per month. I got the job in January for experience (itโ€™s cardiac ICU-stepdown/telemetry floor at a big hospital). I was going to stick it out until I graduate from my nursing program in August, but Iโ€™ve just finalized my schedule of our last-semester internship. I need to work two shifts per week, Iโ€™m not allowed to work a certain two days per week (sorry, trying to be a little vague here for privacy reasons), and I can only work nights because thatโ€™s what my preceptor works. That coupled with classes two days per week and already feeling very burnt out at my position makes me want to resign, but I could really use some advice on if thatโ€™s a very unwise position. My parents think it is, but theyโ€™re also a lot older and have never worked in nursing.
I think they do have a point, though: I have a history of job-hopping when it comes to CNA positions. Iโ€™ve been in a total of five positions over the past 6 years, with the longest one being in hospice. Other than that one, Iโ€™ve never stayed in one over 6 months. I just get so burnt out with the amount of patients I have, sometimes up to 21. When I graduate, I will likely not be working bedside because itโ€™s clearly not sustainable for my mental health (I have diagnosed anxiety and depression). I am afraid that if I quit yet another job after only five months, I could ruin any prospects of finding a job after graduating, which is what my parents have been telling me lol. On the other hand, even with all the jobs Iโ€™ve had as a CNA that Iโ€™ve quit so quickly, Iโ€™ve never had any problem getting hired again. I just donโ€™t list them on my resume. I would probably be taking the hospital I work at off the list of potential employers though. This would be the second time quitting within six months for this particular hospital system.
Again, however, Iโ€™m concerned about the effects that putting so many hours into healthcare could have on my mental health. The culture where I work now is pretty bad. Coworkers talk horrendously about each other behind their backs and every time I come home from work, I just feel really down. Iโ€™m also just so done with being a CNA in general. It feels like an impossible job with so many patients, so little help, and virtually zero recognition.
I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone has!! If you think it would be worth it for me stick it out, I definitely want to know that too. Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฉท

2024.05.11 09:42 lambythelela i feel like i'm getting left behind

i'm currently a university student majoring in nursing. i just finished my first year of nursing school, and while i finished with great grades, i feel like i'm slowly falling behind while everyone advances and thrives. i have experience, as both a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and a dietary aide at a hospital, but i still feel like it's not enough.
recently, there was a big student nurse internship available, where most of my classmates applied. i also eagerly applied, in high hopes i would get selected as i have experience and was told its an easy program to get into. after applying right when the application opened and completing an interview, i anxiously waited for months on the status. it turns out i got rejected. that day i watched as all my friends texted about how they got accepted, and then the next day as every one of my classmates celebrated on also getting accepted. i questioned my self worth a lot and constantly wondered what is so wrong with me that i didn't get accepted.
eventually, i moved on and decided to find a different opportunity. i decided to sign up to volunteer for red cross, and while i did get contacted back, after nearly 2 months of communicating with a representative, i suddenly haven't heard anything in a month. i was told they'd get back to me in a few days, and now i feel like i'm left wondering in the dark. i also applied for two small summer job positions, where i got rejected. that hurt my pride a little bit, as i felt i had more than enough experience, and they were very entry level jobs.
so now, not only am i stuck with the stress of not having an income, i'm also stuck with the stress of having a large gap in my resume and having no experience to add on. i'm also stuck with the sheer shame of denying any summer plans, as everyone asks and expects me to be working a job or doing something useful with my life. since summer started, i've been way in my head. i'm overly critical on myself, and everyday i feel like i'm sinking further into feelings of worthlessness and extreme stress. while i've tried to reassure myself and have applied to a few more volunteer positions, i don't know what to do anymore.

2024.05.09 07:30 spade095 I wrote a small novel, but I really need help choosing a path.

Sooo this ended up very long, sorry about that. Iโ€™m just kinda at a crossroads desperately need some advice. I kinda included a little bit of everything. Yall are troopers if you read the whole thing ๐Ÿซฃ
Iโ€™m 28f, been working in healthcare as a CNA in a nursing home since Covid (with a couple of breaks here and there to do other stuff). Before that, I worked as a machine operator in a junk mail plant and fucking loved it. I loved the machines, I loved fixing them, tweaking things to make them run better or fix a problem, etc. The pay was terrible though.
Ever since I left my junk mail job 5 years ago, my job history has tanked. I left to care for my terminally ill, physically abusive mom (should have tried to take FMLA), and the whole thing screwed with my head, and it took a while to get to a good enough place to hold down a full time job. I decided to go to healthcare, and for a while did OK, but after a back injury, having to leave several facilities due to family illnesses and them needing care, or just outright working in abusive, neglectful facilities where my safety, the residentsโ€™ safety and my license were at risk, Iโ€™ve had more than a few jobs the last few years. I finally found a decent nursing home to work for, and planned on staying here for a few years to repair my job history and strengthen my resume, but Iโ€™m just so burnt out.
Iโ€™ve been stuck trying to decide between returning to manufacturing, moving and pursing a union for welding or electrical like the UA or IBEW, or pursing healthcare further and getting my RN. Iโ€™m just sick and burnt out of healthcare. I recently left a terrible factory (after likeโ€ฆ. Three months working there) with horrible working conditions and decided to return to healthcare, yet the burnout continues.
Thereโ€™s a local snack manufacturing factory in my area, my cousin has been there 23 years and said I could put her down as a reference. Itโ€™s union (Iโ€™m happy for that, but their union isnโ€™t exactly working the best for them), and while they typically only hire from within for their machine operators, they have warehouse positions open currently. Itโ€™d be my perfect schedule, 7am to 7pm three days a week with overtime as needed. The best part? Pay starts at $22 an hour. Iโ€™m making $16 now breaking my back for this nursing home.
They even have maintenance apprenticeships, where they send you to the local tech school part time and you work part time for a couple of years, and then you work for them as an entry level maintenance person for about $30/hour. I want out of food manufacturing eventually, so Iโ€™d want to jump to a local non food manufacturing plant some day. Also union, and maintenance makes like $40 an hour, to start. I wouldnโ€™t even have to move.
Speaking of moving, my husband and I are set up to be solid financially once our cars are paid off. No kids (yet), and our cost of living is low, and we bought a house about 7 years ago, a little prefab manufacturing 1,000 square foot house on a quiet, safe street tucked off a highway. The house and yard needed work, and we got it for about $55,000. Our house payment is only $500 a month (weโ€™re beyond privileged and fortunate for this, we truly lucked out) and if we donโ€™t pay it off early, hubby will be in his early 40s and Iโ€™ll be in my late 30s with a fully paid off house. We already have like $1,000 left every month to put toward debts. Our cars were dumb decisions during Covid, but once theyโ€™re paid off, thatโ€™s another $1,000 a month. However we live in tornado alley, and each year we get closer and closer to getting hit with a tornado. Itโ€™s stressing me the fuck out. The city I live close to (and work in) has a higher murder and crime rate per person than Chicago. The reason Iโ€™m sharing all of this is because one thing Iโ€™m considering is moving and pursuing something like the IBEW, but hesitate to leave such a potentially amazing financial setup.
In my state, the average salary is $38,000 a year. The average salary of an industrial maintenance mechanic in my state is $62,000 a year. The cost of the program at the tech school that the one place would send me to is about $11,000.
If you all were me, would you stick with the nursing home job and put yourself through the maintenance school, and then in a year get a job making $30, or would you go to this factory, make $22ish, and try (and possibly fail) to get in to their apprenticeship, and possibly 2-3+ years later be making the $30 an hour, or would you sit on this healthcare job and bide my time and try for the UA or IBEW? Normally Iโ€™m all for apprenticeships, but for some reason I just canโ€™t decide. What would you guys do?

2024.05.06 03:38 Hulabeingalive Is it my fault I have no job not even at a Macdonalds

F 18 Autistic posted here a while ago and just wanted to ask people a question. People often say I talk funny and others say I sound completely fine. Could the way I act even though I am definitely qualified for a janitor job or an art store restocker on a shelf. Be the reason Iโ€™m unemployed? Am I the blame for all the issues I have of never having a job. I just often feel thereโ€™s people whoโ€™s younger than me getting jobs and I can never get one because of me having Autism and people knowing? Or is it some other reason. Because I changed my whole resume made it better mainly cause people bitched at a typo about dates Of schools I attended in 2020 which definitely wonโ€™t be the reason I didnโ€™t get hired at a Macdonalds. Iโ€™m just confused that is all my efforts useless and should I stop trying? Just a fear I have is even after my CNA classes (I basically help nurses and paients) I canโ€™t get a job at a hospital still because people can tell that I am different from others and that I sound stupid.

2024.05.03 08:44 iFuckSociety Is anyone else actually having trouble getting hired at a hospital?

Am I the only one finding it difficult to get a job in a hospital? Sorry if this is whiny, I'm feeling really discouraged.
True, I only have been a CNA since June last year... but whenever I do research (here on Reddit) usually I see that the "year of experience" thing is overblown and to apply anyway. I have been working in LTC this whole time.
I'm sure my resume is decent enough. I've applied to literally every hospital system in the city since I got certified... I even had a few interviews that I thought went well, but maybe they didn't because they didn't select me. I suppose I could try to perfect my resume and interview skills but I thought I know how to do both.
I don't know if it's possible to over-apply to jobs as well? I mean, if I apply to a bunch of different positions at a hospital maybe they think I'm not discerning enough?
I've even had multiple coworkers who work at a popular hospital system in my city encourage me to include their names in the referrals portion of my applications, even mentioned me to their managers, and it never went anywhere. I know these coworkers are genuine in their want to help me, or at the very least I know they aren't actively deceiving me in their efforts to do so.
I'm just feeling really down about myself, like I'n not good enough to even get a job that supposedly shouldn't even be that hard to get, according to the internet. And honestly they don't even pay more than my current position so they can't hold that over me.
I'm not even completely inexperienced in the workforce in general. I'm in my mid-twenties and have held full time positions in restaurants since I was 16 before this.
Did anyone else actually have to wait a long time to get hired? Especially in big cities? Is the "year of experience is a myth" a myth?

2024.05.02 05:42 Adept-Guess-2606 incoming Pre-Nursing student and I need help

I was wondering if I should complete the CNA program at KCC to better my resume for the competitive nursing program at UH. Though it is really pricy.. $2000 for a summer non credit course. I am also volunteering at Kaiser and have a paid internship next summer so I'm wondering if it would be worth doing the CNA program when I am trying to get my BSN. Does UH look more at grades and the TEAs score? Please help!

However I donโ€™t get paid enough at all and it bothers me. I recently updated my resume and put it on indeed. I got a call for an interview and then a job offer for 2.50 more than I make now. Itโ€™s the activity director at a nursing home. Do I want to be back into healthcare. I really donโ€™t know. Do I love what I do now but itโ€™s also super difficult because of the amount of dcfs I have to deal with on my caseload. I wish I could just make more. But to be an activity Director. 2024.04.29 21:10 madmax79818515 Seeking job-related advice... Trying to help my wife

My wife and I are based in NYC. She's a medical office admin/clerk with 6 years experience, she was a CNA for several years before that. Right now she's working 5 days a week and the workload is pretty excessive. She's trying to find an office job (medical or non-medical) that's part time or per diem (less than 5 days).
I have no issue with this as I'm a RN so financially speaking, her working less than 5 days is no issue. I actually want her to be able to have more time for herself. If my wife has more time for herself, the better everything else is (home life, etc) as a result.
There's a few issues though. First and foremost, she wants to leave but then she's somewhat scared to leave because she's worried she'll make less money due to not just working less hours and but also a potentially lower wage. Even though I make enough, she still wants to be kinda independent and have her money as well. I told her she has to weigh her pros and cons, what's more important, I suggested choosing her mental health over the money.
Then lastly .. finding a new job for her is an issue because despite her work experience and a polished resume, she still gets mostly rejections or no response. Even for work-at-home/remote admin jobs that require no experience. It's pretty ridiculous and I'm wondering if it's the resume or just the job market itself? She has no degree, so maybe they're using that against her as well (?)

2024.04.29 19:30 Either-Tangelo-6246 Will my CNA certification/experience help me in securing a job in medical coding ?

I worked as a CNA for 2 years, in a nursing home/rehab facility. This was beneficial to me in giving me a headstart in anatomy and some procedures and diagnosis familiarity. But will this help at all- working as a CNA with 2 years experience in healthcare ? Outside of the experience in a healthcare facility, the only thing in my skill-sets from that job that apply (maybe) to coding is charting on patients. I did not work the front desk, or do any sort of medical records, med passing, etc. Just patient care. This is the only work experience I have to go on my resume.
