Development:
- After many films of the Ice Age Series, as a success of Ice Age: Returning World, Ice Age was originally pitched to 20th Century Studios in 2020 by director Chris Wedge, producer Lori Forte. The film, originally envisioned as a traditionally animated movie with an action-oriented comedy-drama tone, was intended to be developed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman's Fox Animation Studios (20th Century Animation Studios). Around the same time, Blue Sky Studios, a small visual effects studio in White Plains, New York, was bought out by Fox and reshaped into a full-fledged CG animation film studio. In light of this, Fox Animation head Chris Meledandri and executive producer Steve Bannerman approached Forte with the proposition of developing the film as a computer-animated movie, which Forte realized was "basically a no-brainer", according to her.
- The concept of Reboot film was deeply rooted in a scene from the first Ice Age film where Manny, Sid, Diego and Roshan are walking through an ice cave and they spot a spaceship that's encased in ice, an item that inspired this film in the series. As with the third film, which was also inspired by the ice cave scene in which the Herd comes across a dinosaur that was encased in ice, the team went back to the first film to search for a possible inspiration for this next installment.

2023.09.02 14:15 herequeerandgreat animated movies in development hell
bone: often considered to be one of the greatest graphic novels of all time, there have been numerous attempts to make jeff smith's series into an animated feature. everyone from warner brothers to nickelodeon to netflix has been attached but with very little success. smith is still holding out hope that it could be made.
dragon's lair: don bluth has been trying to get a movie based on his iconic arcade game made for decades. sadly, a series of box office and critical bombs has significantly harmed his reputation. in 2015, a crowd funding campaign was successful in making the budget needed for such a movie. however, in 2020, it was announced that the film would be live action and star ryan reynolds as the lead.
thundercats: an animated movie based on the thundercats has been in numerous stages of development for years. one notable attempt was going to be directed by the art director of halo while another got retooled into the divisive cartoon network series thundercats roar. given our current climate of movies capitalizing on nostalgia, a potential thundercats movie is not completely out of the question.
truckers: dreamworks animation announced that they were planning to make a film based on terry pratchett's novel truckers. they announced that simon beaufoy, the oscar winning writer of slumdog millionare, was attached to write the screenplay and that the film would be released in 2012. that was pretty much all the info that was given. 2012 came and went and no such film was made. dreamworks did consider using the plot for the trolls movie, a proposal that resulted in pratchett rescinding dreamwork's rights to his story.
blue planet: blue planet was an all CGI movie that was to be made by the now defunct studio rainbow studios. a trailer was released, featured a soundtrack composed by rob zombie, and even a video game tie in. it is unknown why the film never got made but the tie in game was retooled into deadly tide.
the simpsons movie sequels: in the late 1990s, simpsons creator matt groening signed a three picture deal to make three movies based on the popular show. the first went through development hell before finally being released in 2007 to widespread acclaim, including being the first animated movie to be nominated for best picture musical or comedy at the golden globes. the two sequels have yet to be made although it has been confirmed that they are in development.
rango 2: 2011's rango was a smash hit with critics, was successful at the box office, and even won the academy award for best animated feature. as such, you'd think that a sequel would be inevitable. well, it's been 12 years and we're still waiting for that sequel. paramount did announce a sequel but disney buying industrial light and magic(the studio that did the animation) seems to have put a caput on those plans.
the cat in the hat: after the lorax and the grinch, illumination was planning to make a movie based on dr seuss's most iconic character, the cat in the hat. the project was announced in 2018 and it was rumored that hugh jackman was being considered to voice the titular character. the project languised in development hell before the rights were given to warner brothers, who announced that they would be handling all future dr seuss adaptations. no official news has been given to the status of the project.
the family guy movie: seth macfarlane has been toying with the idea of making a family guy movie since 2007. in 2008, he announced that he was planning for the movie to be made sometime the next year. ever since then, macfarlane has continued to make these promises with very little follow through. however, given family guy's downward spiral and seth macfarlane's less than steller reputation as a filmmaker, it is highly unlikely that we will be seeing a family guy movie anytime in the near future.
hong kong phooey: in the late 2000s, it was announced that development had begun on a hong kong phooey movie with eddie murphy voicing the number one superguy. test footage was shown in 2012 and the casting info was released in 2014. and...that's that.
the goon: perhaps the most infamous example in this post, the goon was to be a movie based on the popular comic book. clancy brown was the voice the goon while paul giamatti was to voice frankie. most interestingly, director david fincher was slated to produce. the film was announced in 2010, complete with a fully voiced trailer. there was even a poster released. no info has cropped up since then.
the little blue whale: don bluth has long been planning to make a movie that he famously described as "bambi underwater". oscar winning writer robert towne was slated to write the screenplay. nothing has ever come of it.
frog and toad: in 2013, it was announced that the jim henson company would be making an animated movie based on the popular frog and toad book series. nothing ever materialized.
funko pops: a movie based on funko pops was announced in 2019. the film would be produced by warner brothers with mark dindal directing and teddy newton writing. no further updates were given until 2022 when it was announced that funko was planning to retool the project into a streaming service project, effectively putting the project's future into question.

2022.09.10 19:02 JuregObvius Fixing the 1993 live-action Mario by making it a fantasy movie inspired by The Wizard of Oz, Labyrinth, Alice in Wonderland, etc. (Part One)
Alert: I’m brazillian, so don’t be angry with my errors in some words.
Hello friends, how are you? I’m fine. Today I will fix the 1993 live-action Mario movie. Let’s go!
==Title== Super Mario Brothers: The Mushroom Society
==Crew== First of all, I would change the film crew. The team would be this
Director: Ron Howard (the director of Willow and Jim Carrey’s The Grinch) Producer: Steven Spielberg and George Lucas Special Effects: Jim Henson's Creature Shop Screenplay: Jim Jennewein, Tom S. Parker Soundtrack: John Williams
==Cast== 01° Captain Lou Albano as Mari Segale 02° Danny Wells as Luigi Sagale 03° Meg Ryan as Princess Toadstool 04° Winona Ryder as Witch 05° George Carlin as King Toadstool 06° Arnold Schwarzenegger as King Koopa (with face makeup) 07° Warwick Davis as Kamek MagiKoopa (with face with makeup)
Captain Lou Albano and Danny Wells as Mario and Luigi again would have been awesome. I understand that this might confuse a lot of people but they could just be playing a different Mario and Luigi, similar to how Evan Peters was Quicksilver twice. So imagine the Mario and Luigi from the Super Mario Bros Super Show in another plumber outfits or even in the same outfits of Super Mario Bros. Super Show, but without M and L.
The rest of the characters would be puppets and animatronics, that is, with Toad being a Muppet-style puppet voiced by Brian Henson, while Frank Oz would play some another puppet character, like voicing a Thrwomp or another character that would be a puppet, Top. The other characters, that would be puppets and animatronics too, would be voiced by Frank Welker, such as Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Hammer Brothers etc.
==Aesthetics== The aesthetic of the film would be completely different from the film we had. Instead of the Blade Runner-style cyberpunk sci-fi aesthetic, I would do something completely different. For a long time I was wondering how to represent the Mushroom Kingdom and the game world in a live-action movie from the 90s. But I saw these movies that I decided to use as inspiration: The Wizard of Oz (1939), Dark Crystal ( 1982), A NeverEnding Story (1984), Labyrinth (1986), Willow (1989) and Alice in Wonderland (1999). Watching these movies, I was able to get a perfect idea of how to make the Mushroom Kingdom in live-action amazing: a fantasy world like Oz and Wonderland, full of playful NeverEnding Story-style settings, a Willow-style medieval kingdom and strange characters. Labyrinth style. No wonder Ron Howard, who directed Willow, is the director I chose for the film. I had Jim Henson in mind, but he died in 1990.
So, imagine a mix of The Wizard of Oz with Alice in Wonderland, but with more mushrooms in the scenarios. You have the perfect live-action Mushroom Kingdom in an excelent live-action Mario movie from the 1990’s.
==Tone== The tone of the film would be very different from the film we ended up getting. Instead of the dark tone, the tone would be a fantasy movie with adventure, much like Dark Crystal, NeverEnding Story and Labyrinth in terms of tone. In terms of comedy, it would be something like The Mask (1994), The Flintstones (1994), The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004). Also, lots of jokes about fairy tale clichés, much like Princess Bride and Shrek.
==Rating== Rated G or Rated PG

2021.01.11 17:29 Mechagoji75 Oh, The Places You'll Go (Unproduced 90s version)
Well, I'll post this link to this Google Drive folder which has two scripts of the title above here, since there was announcement that J.J. Abrams & Bad Robot are going to produce animated film versions of Oh, The Cat in the Hat, and a spinoff of Thing 1 and Thing 2.
(
https://collider.com/dr-seuss-movies-jj-abrams-oh-the-places-youll-go/)
For the LaGravenese script, I like to thank a friend for obtaining which I got him to oversee it after I saw it being listed on eBay and I was able to get the other draft (by Jim & Peggy George & Bob Seeley - which Jim and Bob were set to direct the film). Apparently this was to be Dr. Seuss' second screenplay since after his involvement on The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T, which is I assume he still never forgets and hates it.
(
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1UvMSquHpdAMwc_yMxqpHAwUy-7oy6wZn?usp=sharing)
- Also I will share when I was looking deep into this project - In the early 1990s, producers
Ben Myron &
Roland Joffé, at Lightmotive with
TriStar Pictures, were set to produce a film adaptation of the book with Seuss penning the screenplay. The Seuss screenplay was later rewritten by
Richard LaGravenese and Barry Berman respectively, but the adaptation was never filmed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
—Meanwhile, Dr. Seuss is at work on his second screenplay (the first having been "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T." in 1953) and the first feature to be drawn from his own literary work. "The intention," said Mr. Myron, "is that as the script is written, many of Dr. Seuss' characters from previous works have been incorporated into the screenplay, such as the Cat in the Hat, and the intention is that this film will be a celebration of Dr. Seuss." Mr. Myron said that "Oh, the Places You'll Go!," basically the story of the journey through life, "is the first Dr. Seuss book that's selling in large numbers to adults, and I think that's due in part to the universality of the theme." The film, Mr. Myron said, will be primarily animated, although there will be one live character. And it will also be a musical, with 12 original songs with lyrics by Dr. Seuss. If all goes well, said Mr. Myron, the film should be released for Christmas 1992 under a development agreement that gives Tri-Star the right to finance the project.— - At The Movies by Lawrence Gelder (The New York Times, 01-11-1991) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
—The TriStar Seuss, “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” becomes a pricey project that languished for nearly a decade at TriStar. Since it features such recognizable franchise characters as the Cat in the Hat, how could it have stalled so badly? The main reason is that an original script by Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) was rewritten so many times that it bore little resemblance to the original and the doctoring of Dr. Seuss left the project largely forgotten about. Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, who’ve adopted it after chasing the “Grinch” deal, had been unaware that a Geisel script existed. But producer Ben Myron, who originated the project with Roland Joffe back when Mike Medavoy ran TriStar, confirmed the existence of Geisel’s handiwork, which was actually much more than the standard movie script. “He drew color storyboards for every script page, and he wrote 13 original songs. It is a masterpiece,” said Myron, “and I’m glad someone will finally do it justice. I remember sitting with Theodor and suggesting that he include his other characters,” said Myron. “He looked at his agent, Herb Cheyette, and said, ‘Can I do that?’ Herb said, of course, these are your creations. He said, ‘Oh, great, it’ll be like a party with all my friends.’ Medavoy closed the deal on the spot, and Theodor wrote a script about a boy who doesn’t want to be born, who gets a tour of the good and bad in life by the Cat in the Hat.” The script got rewritten over and over by scribes that included Richard LaGravanese and Barry Berman (“Benny and Joon”). Latter rewriters were redrafting previous redrafts and didn’t even know there was a Geisel original. Though Geisel envisioned an animated feature musical, Grazer said he and Howard are thinking live action, if negotiations can be completed with TriStar, which has sunk several million dollars into the various script drafts.— - Doctored Seuss by Variety Staff (Variety, 09-17-1998) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2019.08.24 08:48 ThiccLastiGirl Bo Welch’s “The Cat in the Hat” (2003) is a misunderstood gem of cinematography
So as I’m sure practically everyone is aware, “The Cat in the Hat” from 2003 was both a critical, and box office, disaster of phenomenal proportions. I shared the opinion of the majority until about a year ago when I found it in a $3 bin at Walmart and brought it home. The Cat in the Hat was a childhood movie of mine that I loved growing up but soon, becoming the angst-ridden teenager I was, I started to hate it. But I watched it about 3 more times over this past year and honestly, that movie is great. It is full of genuinely funny moments that at least cause a chuckle, beautiful colors, a strangely surreal environment, and a fun twist in the classic Dr. Seuss book. Now I know it was a massive catalyst in killing Dr. Seuss live action movies, but I feel like that was because it’s predecessor was “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and with that movie going down in holiday movie history, the bar was set fairly high at the time.
“TCITH” was unique and original in its ideas and truly has stuck out as it’s own deal for many years. What I truly love about the movie is the absolute absurdity and near-surrealism that comes from it all. The talking giant cat (obviously), the weird booth they walk into and when they slide down a pole Paris Hilton is dancing in a club where everyone is wearing a red striped hat, and of course just the colors and environment. And not to forget the Mother of All Messes! Talk about a fuckin nightmare to come back home to. But people wanted a by the book, very story-like screenplay, and while that is entirely understandable, it is unfair to say that it was a horrible movie because it wasn’t something purely in the mainstream of film. Now I know that it still isn’t a great movie by the book, but enjoyment-wise, creatively, and atmospherically it is one hell of a ride.
I just thought I’d share this opinion, hope to hear other thoughts too.

2019.01.20 14:09 BoomBrain Oscars 2019 Nominations - Final Predictions
Sunday night - just some minor edits, e.g. moving Blunt back into Actress over Aparicio and moving Burning out of Foreign Language. Was considering going crazy and moving Cold War into Best Picture and Best Director, but I'll calm down for now, locking things down and leaving the last-minute panics behind me... whatever happens happens! SECOND SUNDAY NIGHT EDIT - SCREW IT, I'M MOVING FIRST MAN OUT OF PICTURE / DIRECTOR AND REPLACING WITH COLD WAR! Edit: On second thought, never mind We’re in the end game now. Might edit these once or twice before Tuesday, but essentially final:
BEST PICTURE - Roma
- Green Book
- A Star is Born
- Black Panther
- BlacKkKlansman
- The Favourite
- Vice
- Bohemian Rhapsody
- If Beale Street Could Talk
- First Man
- Cold War
- Mary Poppins Returns
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
- A Quiet Place
- Crazy Rich Asians
The first 8 seem pretty safe. Beale Street is barely stronger than First Man, though...if there are only 8 nominees, it’ll probably miss. First Man has a surprising chance just given the sheer number of nominations it’ll receive - not only would it be rare for a movie to receive this number of nominations and be left out of Best Picture, it would practically be unprecedented for the expanded category era. In fact, I’m predicting it to get 9 nominations (which would be the record for most without a BP nomination). In fact, it’s surprisingly plausible for it to be the first movie to ever lead the nominations without a BP nom.
Poppins feels like it could be a reasonable surprise, especially with the recent Sophia Loren event, but it mostly feels dead at this point (particularly given the BAFTAs underperformance). A Quiet Place feels like it’ll get a decent amount of support, but just not enough to really break in. Good comps for Crazy Rich Asians are Wonder Woman and Bridesmaids (the former for the representation aspect, without the reviews of Black Panther, and the latter for SAG+PGA comedy, although CRA will likely not receive any major noms)
I’ve ranked Cold War and Spider-Verse above AQP and CRA for the sake of it, but they both have <1% chance… the idea would be a Phantom Thread-style surprise as voters discover them and become passionate about them too late in the season for them to have appropriately performed at precursors. (Inside Out missing out makes me cynical about any animated films ever being nominated, but the fact that Spider-Verse will probably be winning Animated Feature feels like a mini-miracle, and demonstrates the unusual amount of industry/celebrity passion and buzz it is being met with)
Edit: Moved Cold War up to 11th DIRECTOR
- Alfonso Cuaron (Roma)
- Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman)
- Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born)
- Ryan Coogler (Black Panther)
- Damien Chazelle (First Man)
- Peter Farrelly (Green Book)
- Adam McKay (Vice)
- Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War)
- Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite)
- Debra Granik (Leave No Trace)
- Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk)
- Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)
No idea what to do for the last two slots (I never really bought McKay, even avoiding controversy Farrelly feels like McDonagh 2.0 (and I didn’t even predict McDonagh last year! ...went for Villeneuve), and Lanthimos and Pawlikowski only showed up at BAFTAs a la Luca Guadagnino last year). So, despite missing everywhere, I’ll go with the unreasonable risks of Coogler and Chazelle. I think the Academy will be the most receptive group to Black Panther, and may want to recognize Coogler as the captain at the top of the achievement, while I think that Chazelle is really well-liked among directors. (I realize they probably should’ve made DGA for this to happen, but how else do you predict the shocks if you don’t go for the logically unlikely?)
Also, extremely extremely unlikely, but there's a chance that Cooper Ben Afflecks.
Edit: Moved Pawlikowski to 8th... yes, Coogler and Chazelle seem very irrational but I think this category will have big surprises! Just not sure what they'll be.
ACTRESS
- Glenn Close (The Wife)
- Olivia Colman (The Favourite)
- Lady Gaga (A Star is Born)
- Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)
- Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns)
- Yalitza Aparicio (Roma)
- Toni Collette (Hereditary)
- Joanna Kulig (Cold War)
- Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade)
- Viola Davis (Widows)
Blunt should’ve easily made the BAFTA, and it was her missing out there that made me swap her for Aparicio finally receiving the nomination (after missing out almost everywhere). Anyone below Blunt would be a shock.
Edit: Despite unjustifiably missing at the BAFTAs, I've put Blunt back in. The Academy rarely goes for unknown actors (with the last minute resurgence of Phantom Thread last year, couldn't Krieps have gotten in?). And when they do go for an unknown, they'll usually already have been getting nominations throughout the season, save for the occasional child star.
ACTOR
- Christian Bale (Vice)
- Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born)
- Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody)
- Viggo Mortensen (Green Book)
- Ethan Hawke (First Reformed)
- John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman)
- Ryan Gosling (First Man)
Vice seems unaffected by a mixed reception, with Bale giving the “transformative” make-up-heavy performance voters love. Cooper might grow a bit to compensate for A Star is Born falling elsewhere, while Malek might not be able to go the extra mile to win the Oscar, especially if Bryan Singer-related backlash grows into prominence over the next few weeks.
Washington would be the smart choice for the fifth slot. Hawke swept the critics groups, but missed out at all the big ceremonies (how didn’t he make Globes Drama Actor?) Still, being a well-respected actor and there being no clear fifth nominee, I’ll predict him to “surprise” into that fifth slot.
I do have Washington at 100/1 odds on GoldDerby, so I’m not changing that lol.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
- If Beale Street Could Talk
- BlacKkKlansman
- Black Panther
- Can You Ever Forgive Me?
- The Death of Stalin
- A Star is Born
- Leave No Trace
- First Man
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
- Crazy Rich Asians
- Paddington 2
Predicting a snub for A Star is Born, which may not have the pull of a “frontrunner status”, and nor was the screenplay a particularly acclaimed aspect of the film. The writers branch may opt for a number of other films (with potential for a surprise). I’m going with The Death of Stalin, which would be pretty analogous to the nomination for In the Loop.

- Green Book
- Roma
- Vice
- Eighth Grade
- First Reformed
- A Quiet Place

Despite the controversy surrounding Vallelonga, Green Book seems too strong to miss at this point (and may even end up winning the category). Sorry, First Reformed.

I might just be the only person in the world predicting Spider-Verse and realize that it’s very illogical (especially given other films I could be predicting instead), but I do want bragging rights if I’m somehow correct.
My rationale would be a comparison to the focus on Kubo’s VFX yielding it a surprise nod as the first-ever animated VFX nominee. With tons of focus on Spider-Verse’s art direction, could it be the first-ever animated Production Design nominee?
[Probably not]

If Black Panther or Mary Poppins Returns get nominated, either could win! The Visual Effects Society left out both films, however, making it possible for one to get in but incredibly unlikely for both to do so. Poppins could get in on the basis of some endearing moments of whimsy (such as an acclaimed 2D animation sequence), while Panther (a perhaps unprecedented case of a VFX-heavy Best Picture nominee where VFX were the least acclaimed aspect) could get in due to overall love and a strong presentation at the bake-off that left out its poorer effects. I really wonder how much overlap there is between the Visual Effects Society and the corresponding branch of the Academy.
Speaking of the bake-off, I mostly used it to predict Solo and a surprise nod for Marwen. With how kindly they took to the former’s presentation, I’ll be very surprised if it misses. On the other hand, First Man could get Dunkirk’d.
ANIMATED FEATURE
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
- Incredibles 2
- Isle of Dogs
- Ralph Breaks the Internet
- Mirai
- Early Man
- Dr. Seuss' The Grinch
- Smallfoot
FOREIGN LANGUAGE
- Roma
- Cold War
- Shoplifters
- Capernaum
- The Guilty
- Burning
- Ayka
- Never Look Away
- Birds of Passage
Burning’s the only iffy one here...despite being one of the most acclaimed films of the year, it may be too divisive/weird/art house. Any of the other four could take its place (I perhaps illogically have Ayka as the first runner-up when many were not expecting to see it on the shortlist, but I believe there’s precedent for a surprise foreign shortlist to ultimately be nominated, with that initial surprise indicating an unexpected amount of passion… could be totally talking out of my derriere though, I have no idea)
Also, what an extraordinarily strong year this will be for this category! How unfortunate it was for some of these films to come out the same year as Roma.
Edit: It's NEVER all the expected ones in this category... I imagine Burning is the vulnerable one, though I hope I'm wrong! On a whim, I'll replace it with The Guilty.

- Won't You Be My Neighbor?
