All things snowblower related; from maintenance, total rebuilds, hard to find parts, and histories thereof.
2024.05.15 00:49 Defying_Gravitas Literally, how would you react?
Picture this:
It's a Saturday morning in January. You were out drinking with friends last night on the cusp of a snowstorm. Around midnight when the bar started to close, you welcomed the group to pop by your home to wish your 23-year-old son a happy birthday.
Your son, a few of his friends, and your nephew were there when you got home. Friends from the bar arrived shortly: Brian Higgins in his jeep, The McCabes in their whatever-mobile.
The snowfall continued to accumulate. By around 1:45am, the last "guest" (your adult daughter) departed, picked up by her boyfriend to make the 20ish-minute drive home.
Despite the howling wind, the snow insulates the outdoors and blankets everything with that surreal quietness, as if you've forgotten that you have cotton balls in your ears. The only sound throughout the night is the slow, comforting rumble of the plows making their hourly passes.
Around 6am, a woman is screaming 30 feet from your bedroom window. Wildly. Urgently. Inconsolably. Emergency vehicles begin arriving to your yard. Six, seven, maybe eight motors running. Heavy doors open and slam closed. Beeps and boops from various walkie talkies and communication devices. There are multiple police cruisers, firetrucks, and ambulances. Their red and blue lights reflect off the snow like a dozen flashing suns, casting criss-crossing light beams against your house like a scene from the Waco docuseries. Anywhere from 11 to 15 first responders are in front of your house, one of whom seems to be using a leaf blower.
Only one of your five kids is home. You don't know if your daughter and her boyfriend made it home safely. You don't know if your sister, her husband, and your son's friends made it home safely. You don't know if your nephew made it home safely. You don't know what happened after you closed the door behind them last night.
What are your first thoughts?
What are your first actions?

2024.05.14 19:50 marzipanspop Looking for Toro/Wheel Horse attachments (Wheel Horse 312/8)
I am the new owner of a 1994 Wheel Horse 312/8 garden tractor. I have a mower deck already, but would be interested in the blade attachment, the snow blower attachment (2 stage), a bagger, and perhaps a harrow or rototiller.
Any thoughts on where I could procure these would be awesome!

Serious question for northern transplants: how long did you keep them before donating them to a thrift store?
Edit:
For additional context, I’m asking because I see them all the time at thrift shops. I’ve never had either one. Lived in NC my whole life. They are coming from somewhere. So I’m legit curious how long people hold onto them before realizing that we don’t have that kind of winter?

2024.05.14 06:32 mckalebh Finished my “Quad Mod” battery for my mower.
| I finished 3d printing some panels to close off the openings of the box. I did get to test this mod out this weekend. I got nearly a solid hour of continuous mowing out of the 4 batteries. The extra weight was almost barely noticeable while mowing. When doing some turn around a you could kinda notice it but it wasn’t too bad. Temperature difference was very noticeable. When using a single battery in the compartment once the battery was discharged it used to be very hot to the touch all around. Where the contacts are on the battery was always very uncomfortable to touch. With the quad mod the batteries discharged don’t even feel warm at all. Contacts are at least ambient. Maybe a smidge over ambient. Ready to take a charge as soon as they came out of the holders. I tested it the other day by moving it to a area I was working in and hooking the pack up to my fan. Worked fantastically. Maybe it’s a smidge of a gimmick for this purpose. But it’s always a option should I ever need to use it. For the purpose it’s serving I am overall very happy with it! It’s exceeding my expectations and theoretically doesn’t void any warranties! I may still see about putting a LED light on the box aswell if I have to mow into the dark again. 2024.05.12 21:20 zhamid79 Tractor suggestion (Cub Cadet GX54D)
| I am a suburbanite who just got a rural property that needs some TLC. There’s less than 2 acres to mow but it’s not all flat. The hills aren’t bad but the ground isn’t always even. There are sections where you get some water (depending on the season), so traction is important. The areas that need mowing doesn’t always have grass. There are places where plants have grown that need to me mowed until I figure out what to do with those sections. I want something that can carry mulch etc and that I can use with either a snow blower or a plow. The driveway isn’t huge, but we do get snow so I’ll have to plow it. I’ll have a wall behind snow blower as well. I was thinking about Cub Cadet because it has a big deck, better transmission and rear differential. There are a few JD x350 for sale that come with snow blowers, but I am worried I might end up putting too much load on the 350. I’d think about getting something better used but I worry about having to maintain something old before I figure out what I am doing. So any suggestions? submitted by zhamid79 to lawnmowers [link] [comments] |

2024.05.12 04:58 purplecatuniverse At this moment, I’m doubting Read will be found guilty
Before the trial started, I thought more than likely, she was responsible for Okeefe’s death. And I also thought that she had good defense attorneys that were doing everything they could to show reasonable doubt. But I’ve watched most of the trial so far and even though there’s not enough yet to decide what happened, there’s lots of smoke.
My problem is not with the Alberts as much as it is with law enforcement and how they handled things. I was watching live when I heard about the red solo cups, the grocery store bag, and the leaf blower. When I saw the picture of the open grocery bag with the cups (filled with melted snow and blood) inside a police garage, just chilling open next to Read’s vehicle, I was so angry. And I was annoyed when the (former) detective said he had no memory of ever using evidence tape before and didn’t know the procedures. There was clearly no labeling on the bag. Despite the leaf blower working great, according to police, and despite the police digging through the snow, not a single piece of taillight was found until days later. It’s bizarre that they didn’t find a single piece that morning and suddenly 45 pieces show up days later. Plus, there’s an obvious lack of professionalism from Proctor (I’m looking forward to his testimony) and there’s way too much interconnectedness between the police and the Alberts. The incompetence is just astounding. You would think they would go above and beyond for a dead police officer.
I generally remember most of the cops that testified having an attitude and being defensive/evasive, which is in stark contrast with the civilians, including the Alberts. I get that the police are being accused of corruption, so they’re pretty annoyed, but the Alberts also have heavy accusations against them and they seemed far more cooporative during cross examination in comparison, with some exceptions.
This doesn’t mean I buy the Alberts stories completely. I think it was Julie Albert that is super close to Proctor’s sister, for example. But I’m not convinced that any of them would have wanted to kill Okeefe deliberately, especially considering how well everyone seemed to be getting along that night. I’m eager to hear if there’s any evidence at all that the Alberts/Collin did anything, once the defense presents their case.
But I don’t know if the defense will have to convince the jury that any of the Alberts had anything to do with it. The cops’ behavior creates so much doubt and the memory of their cross examinations stands out in my mind (and probably the jury’s minds too). With how the evidence was handled and all of the conflicts of interests, with so much opportunity for contamination or tampering, I doubt she will be found guilty. I know it’s still super early and we’re just 2 weeks in, so we’ll see.

2024.05.11 22:29 IceGuardian20 Winter Advice
Hello all, my initial post here helped to convince myself and my family to make the big move here from Nashville. We decided on Cleveland Heights! I have a couple questions involving winters. We have a RWD Armada and 2012 Prius. Will we struggle driving around in the winters? I planned to get snow tires for the Armada at least.
Also, I know the past couple winters have been mild but would you reccomend a snow blower?
Thanks!

2024.05.10 19:25 untenna Tioga plowing update (and Glacier is opening May 14th)
May 9, 2024 - Roads crew is working in the area of the Olmsted Point avalanche zone, about 30 miles from the Crane Flat gate. Progress was slower this week due to up to two feet of new snow along Tioga Road and diversion of plows to keep other roads open.
After consultation with the avalanche team, the roads crew made an initial plow through Olmsted Point avalanche zone yesterday. Olmsted Point remains an active avalanche zone, which the avalanche crew continues to closely monitor to ensure safety. Dozers and two blowers have now started working beyond Olmsted Point.
The Olmsted Point avalanche zone is not open for administrative access yet, so crews have not been able to assess utilities and other facilities in Tuolumne Meadows.

2024.05.10 02:30 AdditionalPizza Deciding between Ego and Greenworks 80v, comes down to the pressure washer
80V 3000 PSI 2.0 GPM Brushless Pressure Washer, (2) 4.0Ah Batteries an – Greenworks Tools Canada Inc. vs
POWER+ 3200 PSI Pressure Washer with 2 x 6.0Ah Batteries and 320W Charger EGO (HPW3204-2) (egopowerplus.com) Obviously the 200 psi won't matter much but I've never had an actual pressure washer just portable ones. How significant would the jump up to 2gpm with the Greenworks be?
I'm asking here because I like the idea of Ego. I have Milwaukee 12v, Ryobi 18v and a single 40v tool, and a Kobalt mower that only has one working battery left. Greenworks apparently can be made to fit into Kobalt but the mower is getting pretty old anyway and generally cost less than batteries.
Greenworks and Ego are pretty equal as far as future purchases for mower and snow blower. I could continue with Ryobi 40v for beefier yard tools outside of the big stuff that Greenworks and Ego can fill, or I can go with Ego and only buy Ryobi if it's something unique.
I kind of hate how Greenworks has so many battery types and some stuff I want is only available in their 60v. But Ego doesn't have a wheelbarrow, or potentially as good of a pressure washer? What kind of things would the 2gpm Greenworks be able to do significantly better than the Ego 1.2gpm? Also Ego seems much slower to come to Canada (I don't think their pressure washer is even here yet).
Side note, another point for Ego will be the commercial power station. Very tempted to get into Ego just for that for my small business.

2024.05.10 01:13 Kelekona Sometimes garbage is a good thing.
I gave up on apocalypse prepping because that doesn't play nice with hoarding. However I am allowed to do deep pantry because sometimes we would rather accept that we're snowed-in rather than drive to the store for fresh milk. We now have enough juice-boxes to last until snow-season in the northern hemisphere, but at least I know that I can't buy any more until next spring without good reason. (Good reason being that we adventure enough to use them up before the end of adventuring season.)
Anyway, my store was having a "buy 7 of these things, they drop to $1 sale" and I was waiting for that to happen to nose-tissue because usually they too expensive. I didn't need that many, (I actually thought that I had too big of a pile before we both caught a bad cold) got frustrated because the first other item was sardines which I'm also at the "enough" threshold but I found something.
While grabbing boxes of tissues, I also grabbed a 19 x 23 inch tray that was part of the shipping/display. I have yet to encounter stores having an issue with letting me take stuff like that and I'm planning to snag some more notebook display boxes next back-to-school season because they're great for books that I want to not disappear into the bookcase. (There's also me not being able to buy something that's a better size for bread than an old cookie-display whose first purpose was to carry groceries to the car because I forgot my totes, but also I picked it as a temporary thing.)
I didn't know why I wanted it, some sort of "I'm a creative and this tray is good for containing a project" thing. Sofar I emptied the rolling-cart I use as a desk into it so I could roll the cart onto the porch and hit it with the leaf-blower. I asked mom to help me deal with the stuff that I didn't want to put back, though it went into my "this is supposed to be for active projects" rack. (Problem for future-me.) Stupid amount of posties and some rubber-band kit, as I recall.
Mom's getting new windows in her craftroom/office and I did the stretch-and-bend to get her magpie-jars from the window-ledges onto that tray. That made it easy for her to transfer them into a moving-box.
And then I freaked out because going after the ceiling-cobwebs that I could see made me aware that there were a lot more that I couldn't see.

2024.05.09 14:42 Hot_Opportunity_8958 Clarification because this has confused some people: THIS is where JOK’s body was found. It is most definitely “on top” of snow. You can even see the outline of his body impression (head near the leaf blower) LT Gallagher testified as such. The dark spots are where the blood and glass were found.

2024.05.09 03:17 renter94 Lawn/Garden Tractor and Snowblowers
I see that this question has been asked here a handful of times over the last few years but I'm looking for some advice.
I currently have an early 2000's Cub Cadet lawn tractor that has served me well for the last few years but just went to bed for the final time. Looking to upgrade. I currently have 2 properties (rentals) that I own and do lawn care and snow removal at. My current setup had been the Cub hauled between properties for lawn, an atv with a plow at one property for snow, and a walk behind snow blower at the other. It's worked but I'm hoping to buy a 3rd property this winter and I'm just trying to weigh my options to not need to deal with another piece for snow and can hopefully just haul the single piece between the properties and to minimize how much time I spend every week.
I'm trying to do some research to find my best options for both lawn and snow at all 3 (hopeful for another purchase) with one piece of equipment. Doing some reading, it sounds like most recommend garden tractors vs lawn tractors for the various accessories. My lawns currently aren't big (both currently about 1/3 of an acre), but I'm trying to plan for the future. Driveways aren't large either (usually a 30min snowblow and a 20 min plow) My future state would hopefully be one tractor, one snow blower attachment, a trailer, a bagger, and a dethatcheaerator. Don't plan to do any tilling or gardening with it. Doing all of this is probably overkill but I don't want to spend hours and hours every week dealing with lawn and snow after work.
Are there recommendations for a brand and model along with accessories? My budget can be a bit flexible as it's an investment as I hope to buy more properties in the coming years and want something to last. Don't want to spend a fortune, but want to get what's right.
I have a couple of dealers pretty close to me: John Deere, Cub Cadet, and Toro. I've looked at the HD and Lowes models and I don't feel like I have a great understanding yet of what I should be looking for. Haven't gone and talked to any dealers yet, but want a gut check or some idea of what I should really be looking for before chatting with any salesman.

2024.05.08 19:43 rockitchen Is it worth it to repair my Toro Snow blower engine?
I've had my snow blower for something like 18 years, but after 10 it just dumped all the oil out onto my driveway while running.
I assumed gasket failure, but have never taken it apart.
At the urging of a handier friend, I bought a little Predator engine from Harbor Freight and was able to get it installed and running and it's been doing the job ever since.
However, I've got that old Toro engine sitting in my basement, taunting me with it's push button electric starter...
Is it worth rebuilding it? Where would I get a gasket? Should I chuck it and make room for other projects?

2024.05.08 18:52 Alexis_0hanian New resident incoming, what should I know about preparing for winter?
Moving to the area soon. We just bought a house and are planning to stay for a while. We've been living around the world for the past couple decades so it's finally nice to call some place home and let my child grow up around an actual community. My spouse will be commuting to the Lexington area, I work remotely 100%. While my spouse grew up around bitter Midwestern winters, I haven't had as much exposure to living in colder weather full time. We did live in Germany for a few years, but it really wasn't that harsh.
Sellers are including the snow blower so we're good there. We'll be on Hudson Power and everyone keeps telling me they're excellent. Any recommendations on other items we will need available?

2024.05.07 18:34 Rizzpooch How do I get rid of a snow blower?
Figured someone here would know.
I moved into a house on the West Side last year with a backyard shed. Now that I've wrapped my head around the other parts of the house, I want to deal with the following:
The previous owner left a medium duty snowblower (Craftsman 4-cycle 5.0/22"). After failing and trying to get the thing started, I've determined that I don't want it; plus, I've got a newer electric one that does the job for me.
I didn't want to put it out for bulk trash, because I'm pretty sure it's got oil/gas in it. Maybe there's a place to bring it, or a company/organization that would want it?
Thoughts?
Edit: gone within an hour of being put on the curb. You guys called it

2024.05.07 18:29 PostForwardedToAbyss Good riddance to bad neighbours
Here in Toronto, independent grocers are cheerfully posting price comparison lists vs Loblaw’s all over social media, and the nice Boomer ladies in line with me at Freshco agreed that it’s well past time for a change and were participating in the boycott too.
As I walked back past the Loblaw’s (immediately opposite my home) I noticed a bunch of invasive garlic mustard weeds growing in the greenery on the property, and made a note to go chop them, because of course Loblaw’s isn’t going to look after it. This made me think about all the little ways they have been screwing us over both privately and publicly: Inside: I remember the promise of “all lanes open on the weekend” that quietly disappeared. The produce that starts to rot in the bag before we even get it home. The handbaskets and even the small, more lightweight carts that have been removed from the store because it’s more profitable if we push a steel barge up and down the aisles instead. Just little losses, here and there, that add up to make life harder for the elderly and disabled.
Outside: at this location, the sidewalks along the property that become impassable in the winter, forcing any children who use wheelchairs or parents with strollers onto the road to get to the elementary school. When the contracted snow removers do show up, they ignore one side and let it fill completely (too narrow for the big plow) while the excess snow on the other side gets piled on the corner, so customers approaching the parking lot must walk against traffic on a busy four-way stop to get to the store (I call repeatedly and beg managers every year to remind them of their legal responsibility according to the city, but the contractors won’t budge because it would cost them more to actually do the job properly, and round and round we go.) In the summer time, trash piles up in the green spaces, discarded clothing left by itinerant overnight visitors is left to rot, but small teams of roaring leaf blowers are deployed yearly to casually waft a few stray twigs.
They don’t care because it’s not their job to care. They are too big to feel a sense of pride as a member of the neighbourhood. No one with any power to fix the problems actually works on the site, so they don’t have to take responsibility.
It’s obvious that the boycott is making Loblaw’s uncomfortable, and that’s GOOD. If they want to be members of our community, then they need to continually demonstrate a sense of responsibility to us, to be responsive to the needs of their customers. It’s time to stop taking our business for granted.
