2024.05.16 20:18 Eleanorina re: that vegetarian/vegan study making the rounds

Some vegan peeps were trying to post about it here
This is a response to that and to similar studies.
First off, nutritional epidemiology is very flawed, illustrated by this classic from Five Thirty Eight: "Consider what has been "the underpinning of the nutrition scientific establishment for over 50 years ... "
https://abcnews.go.com/fivethirtyeight/video/fivethirtyeight-problem-nutrition-studies-56038322https://abcnews.go.com/fivethirtyeight/video/fivethirtyeight-problem-nutrition-studies-56038322 (about 3 min)
For more in depth look at the problems with nutrition science, the Swiss Re BMJ conferences, https://www.swissre.com/institute/conferences/food-for-thought-bmj-2020.html and from 2018 https://www.bmj.com/food-for-thought
Worth pointing out that nutritional epidemiology doesn't always find a correlation between red meat and colorectal cancer, "Red and processed meat isn't associated with colorectal cancer in Asia, where it's a health food and food of the wealthy rather than the poor." -- George Henderson comment on this study, https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10408398.2018.1495615?journalCode=bfsn20
Or "the incidence of colorectal cancer was significantly higher among vegetarians than among nonvegetarians." https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/89/5/1620S/4596951?login=false
but it's so flawed that we can't take it as a form of evidence, either way.
For some of the zerocarb/carnivores, eating animal source foods exclusively is the only way of eating which has brought them full health. They look and feel healthier and their health markers improve and their chronic health conditions go into remission as long as they eat this way. eg consider Terri's experience -- https://www.dietdoctor.com/how-terri-lost-200-pounds-and-reversed-her-type-2-diabetes
Their health improves on eating only animal source foods -- but based on poor quality (really bad!!) nutritional epidemiology they should switch to a way of eating which immediately brings about poorer health for them? That doesn't make sense. Specifically for GI health -- which seems a better choice, diets where they are living with active, chronic cases of their condition or a way of eating which puts their GI condition into remission?
There are a cluster of diseases which appeared in populations when the storage foods were introduced, chronic diseases we tend to think are a normal part of living and aging. Whether the populations were eating omnivorous diets or diets wholly of animal source foods, they did not have these chronic "western diseases" until the storage foods came along.
Go through the medical anthropology, start with the references in Gary Taubes' Good Calories Bad Calories, pp 89 - 99, the Diseases of Civilization chapter.
Here he is talking about that research, at the 12m55s-17m30s section of Biomed Central Metabolism, Diet and Disease Conference, The Obesity-Cancer Connection Panel, : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EffpuKqWWF8 (the section starts a minute and a half earlier, at the 11m30s mark, talking about insulin sensitizing)
Burkitt & Trowell's work -- "Diseases of Westernization" includes some of the observations about the variation in the presence of chronic diseases between different populations. Burkitt mistakenly thought it was the fiber that made the difference, even though he knew about Inuit experience and that it was similar to the other H-G groups: that the chronic western diseases (incl cancer) were rare to non-existent on their traditional diets before the introduction of the storage foods. He omitted the Inuit experience when forming his hypothesis because he had a preference for the fiber hypothesis. But despite a diet of little to no fiber, Inuit also did not have the chronic Western diseases until the introduction of storage foods.
A more coherent hypothesis would have been that the addition of the storage foods was the problem and the fiber, if it did anything, was an improvement only because it displaced the storage foods. (that hypothesis is more coherent, but also not a great hypothesis, because fiber can make things worse, see: https://www.reddit.com/ketoscience/wiki/fiber. If you go through Burkitt's lifetime of research, it wasn't convincing for the fiber hypothesis, the idea was compelling, but the outcomes were not. Compare to this, clear results from removing it: Stopping or reducing dietary fiber intake reduces constipation and its associated symptoms Full text: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3435786/)

2024.05.16 19:21 ProfessionalCaptain4 What villains can we see in the Sonic cinematic universe?

The Sonic franchise had a large gallery of villains, both the original saga and the Archie Comics and IDW comics, there are many to choose from to adapt them in the movies or series of the Sonic cinematographic universe.
Let's talk about what villains I could or would like to see in the future of SCU
One of my favorite things about the Archie and Idw comics is their excellent variety of villains outside of Eggman.
in Archie: we have warlords, wizards, dark gods, alternate universe doppelgangers, aliens, a corporate mastermind, and then some.
IDW: we have two traumatized cyborgs and a group of criminals
Scourge :I love because, well, could anyone resist taking such an inherently good character, and turning him evil? I love the dynamic he and Sonic shared, being able to get into each other's heads, but ultimately staying themselves. It is true that it would be super repetitive to have a hedgehog that is an evil counterpart to Sonic, let's go (let's have Shadow) of course it can make Scourge see that unlike Sonic, he was not afraid, even so he used his powers to obtain power and control in his planet it would be perfect to see more hedgehogs than just being limited to sonic, amy, shaodw and silver
dr Finitevus :I always loved him; he wasn't overwhelmingly powerful, although he had unique abilities and intelligence. It was his knowledge of the world that allowed him to pit the world against the heroes or the heroes against each other. When he didn't need to be somewhere, he just wasn't there. He fought proxy wars by recruiting other characters to, knowingly or unknowingly, carry out his orders. It was a refreshing change of pace from Sonic's usual bad boy.
It will be an excellent way to get more out of the echidna lore, what a bad taste the knuckles spinoff left in our mouths, this tribute already deserves to adapt its entire arc in the comics to the SCU since it would be great to see more echidnas and give it a try. the treatment you deserve
Enerjak: a character full of energy and creativity with a cool and creative design, I always liked this character and he generated some pretty good plots and conflicts. It would be another option along with finitrevus to be a personal threat to Knuckles and the others on how Knuckles should confront one of his species and prevent him from following the steps of going astray.
Mammoth Mogul:I like his powers, his suit and his elegant way of speaking. But I don't think he has much personality. and he is conceited, he keeps escaping from justice and causes problems for Sonic, a mafia lord would be perfect in a detective plot either with the chaotix or with sonic it is also related to the chaos emerald of course they could change this that He looks for them because they are a legend
metal sonic :Its design needs no explanation. When he is in control, he can be as smart as Eggman and as terrifying as one of Sonic's god-level villains.
His rivalry with Sonic has a lot of depth. Thematically they are natural rivals of the franchise, nature versus machine, but also in terms of characters, one is a free soul and the other is in a prison of multiple things.
Metal has very personal problems derived from his rivalry with Sonic. His identity is built around the idea that he is the best version of Sonic, he is the real Sonic, but every loss shows him otherwise and all he can do is face it and try to say that Sonic is the copy and Metal is the real one. . But no matter how strong he is, how fast he is, even if those traits are more than what Sonic is capable of, he loses. That's the tragedy of him, he's in a cycle of not accepting reality and he's punished for it and so far we've gotten great ways to show that character. We got healthy parts of his character, scary parts, interesting parts and sad parts. And the good thing is that, unlike other rivals, he is a villain, not an antihero or a redeemed character, a villain who can be explored without being the good guy. He's also had some amazing boss fights over the years. This would be a perfect character to take on Eggman's legacy and use it for your own benefit.
Dr. Starline: Amazing villain that you love to hate, he played his role to perfection and left lasting effects long after his death in the form of the equally good Surge and Kit. What I like most is that he could have easily been like everyone the other sidekicks and try to one-up Eggman, but instead he still idolized him and was ultimately used to cement how good Eggman is as a villain.
He would be another perfect candidate to take Eggman's place and he is a thousand times better than Agent Stone or any generic Eggman assistant who only exists to provide a moment of comedy that is not funny.
The metarex and the dark oak (sonic x)
I think the writers did a great job creating a new arc for sonic x
It's a fun sci-fi take on Sonic that gives us a galaxy-spanning adventure. You still have individual episodes that are reminiscent of your weekly episodes of Star Trek or whatever that have their own independent stories on individual planets, but also the overall story of the season is still moving forward. I feel like this is the best way to do episodic television.
I love the idea that we have a planet full of animals, but in Sonic's universe there are also plants.
The plot twist of Metarex being formerly plant people (Seedrians, if I remember correctly) turns them from this vague threat into a completely personal threat, as we've had plenty of time up to that point to see Cosmo become part of the Team Sonic. .
It's always good to have that underlying message that plants and animals can get along despite their differences. In today's world, many people have yet to discover the real-life equivalent.
Plus, you have the entire Tails and Cosmo arc and the culmination at the end. Don't lie, you always cry too!
prefect official as the final boss of the sonic franchise
Merlina :Merlina doesn't understand that death is a natural part of life, which is why she is afraid of it. This is a real fear called thanatophobia, but it is a fairly extreme case. Anyway, after defeating her, Sonic consoles her by telling her to make life worth living with the time she has, thus resolving her internal conflict and also ending her character arc. This type of deep writing is something that Sonic Adventure to Black Knight excel at.
Well, that was all, write in the comments which villain from the Sonic franchise you would like to see adapted into SCU in the future. Leave your opinions in the comments. I would love to read them.

2024.05.16 19:14 Complete-Ear-9810 Advice for Rocco

Advice for Rocco
This is Rocco, he is a Herman’s tortoise! (I know he needs deeper and different bedding, going to get that later) but I was wanting advice on important things I need to do/buy for him. Like what kind of bedding is best, the best set up/habitat for him, best lights and lamps, how to add plants for him…etc. ANY advice is helpful. I’m not the type to get a pet that I do not do thorough research on before I get it. I usually do lots of research and try to have all the right stuff before taking in an animal. BUT my fiancé has ADHD and ADD which causes him to make impulsive decisions sometimes without talking to me first (we’re working on that lol). But he is insisting on keeping it so give me ALL the info and advice you can as Im sure I will be the one taking care of him 😂 Thank you in advance!!!

2024.05.16 19:07 cfalnevermore My Messed Up Town: The Weird Nocturnal Hippy Chick

Here we are again in the shit stew that is the Fallowveil trailer park. We’ve got soul eating strippers, jobs that kill us, and plenty of weirdos, both the trailer trash and the potentially paranormal variety. It’s the place where even your own computer sometimes threatens to kill you. I can’t tell if I should be worried, or annoyed that all my neighbors have such irresponsible web habits. I know it’s not me that brings in all these machine wiping viruses.
So even though I got a system error that literally said “you’re useless and you should die” I’m less interested in that. Stupid thing. Like I don’t already know I’m useless. That’s not what I’m depressed about.
Well… I suppose it's tangentially related.
I hope anyone reading will forgive me. I’m feeling the sting of rejection right now. It was really stupid of me to ask. Especially now. Nobody here really likes me. They’ve only been nice to me as a courtesy because I was almost involved in a god damn shootout. And my idiot self decided that was the perfect time to push one of my few friends all the way away. Never ask your friends out on dates. It ruins everything.
So there’s this woman. I’ve talked about her in the past. Trista Ramone. She lives in the far back corner of the trailer park. You can instantly tell which unit is hers because she’s covered every square inch of the property with gardens and a rabbit hutch. The place usually has beads and colorful flags hanging on its walls as well. She’s kind of a right winger’s nightmare. I know some of those flags represent various lgbtq plus communities.
She and I have been friendly in the past. We’re both night shift workers. We crossed paths quite a bit going to and from work so we struck up a friendship over the years.
Let’s just ripped the band aid off. Recently I’ve started thinking I had… stronger feelings for Trista. I got stupid and decided to tell her about them. She wasn’t interested. I get why. We have very different lifestyles. I like meat, and she thinks the meat industry is murder. I’m not willing to give up meat, and she’s not willing to give up her beliefs. It's as simple as that. Now things are incredibly awkward with one of my closer friends and I’m still spiraling into self loathing, where I belong.
She swore up and down that she absolutely still wants to be friends with me, but I’m not sure I believe her. The look she gave me when I told her I’d like to ask her out. It looked like sadness, but a small part of me is convinced it was pity, or worse, disgust and loathing, and that small part gave me ever shuts the fuck up. But anyway, she gave me permission to write about her.
She is one of the creepy fixtures of our little neighborhood after all. She told me to make her seem as insane and scary as I possibly could and that she should get to kill me at the end. She also handed me a few of her high school yearbooks, advised me to chat with another neighbor of ours who she went to school with, and to only use creepy rumors for the rest.
Part of me is really willing to describe her as awful, but that’s just my anger. I don’t like that part of me. Trista’s not a bad person at all. She’s just weird and she doesn’t want to date me. God damn it, Petunia’s right. I need therapy.
So, I’ve told the story of the sexy, scary lady living in a polycule here in the trailer park. I think she’s got a bigger heart than she lets on. I’ve talked about the stories surrounding the Schroeder Slaughterhouse. Now let’s talk about the hippy everyone thinks is a vampire.
She’s a taller woman, maybe five-seven or eight, and she’s skinny. Her typical wardrobe is… interesting. Try to imagine your typical new-age hippy/stoner girl, wearing colorful sarongs, crop-tops, beanies, baggy sweaters, T-shirts with colorful sayings on them, sandals, boots woven from some sort of exotic plant, beaded necklaces, bracelets, a few too many piercings and some intricate tattoos. Can you picture that kind of person? Well, take that and dip them in “goth” dye. Everything is black, and contrasts to her pale white complexion, her eyes are this unusual violet color, and then make the woman wearing all that seem kind of depressed about something. That’s the look Trista has going on. Like if Wednesday Addams was forced to dress up for Hippy Day.
I’ve heard people call her an emo vampire, but as a former emo myself, she doesn’t fill out all the criteria. She doesn’t typically wear any super tight pants or cake on the eyeshadow. I guess she’s just Trista. It might sound weird (and it is) but the whole thing suits her. Her style, tattoos, and complexion all create this image of skinny vampiric waif with a mysterious past and a freaky sarcastic attitude and I found the whole thing… kinda hot.
Trista keeps to herself. She’s made the most out of her little corner of the trailer park. Like I said, she decked out her unit with garden squares, and a Rabbit pen. No idea why she’s allowed to do that. A lot of these places don’t allow pets. I heard she was also trying to put in a beehive too, but her neighbors are fighting her on that one. Our park is a bit too condensed for bees. She has a permit to grow hemp, but of course it’s not for recreational use. She treats it and uses it to weave things like handbags, clothes, and other stuff. There’s a consignment store in town that sells all kinds of things Trista has crafted herself. So she’s handy and self sufficient too. She paints, she carves wood, she weaves, she crochets, she sews, and who knows what else. She’s so good at her little crafts that apparently she’s able to support herself just selling them and working part time at the Moonlight Inn outside of town.
She’s also relatively friendly. I almost feel bad calling her weird, but here’s the thing, I’ve seen some REALLY weird shit. People jokingly call her a vampire, and she seems to embrace that, but part of me seriously wonders. The big clue is, like I mentioned, she’s completely nocturnal. She’s always asleep during the day, and every blind and curtain is drawn tight. The one time she came out during the day, she had on this full body suit with a helmet with UV glass and everything. Even then, she only showed up to give Petunia a hug, before leaving again.
That was the first time I saw Trista, come to think of it. I was kind of intrigued. It was kind of hard not to be when someone shows up to a community cookout in a freaking astronaut suit. I approached Petunia after she left.
“Who the heck was that?” I wondered.
“MASON! I’m so glad you could make it! You’ve been here about three months now! How’d that job interview go?”
“Oh. It went well. I might be doing janitorial work soon.”
“Night shift?”
“Maybe. I’m not sure.”
“If it’s the night shift, you’ll definitely meet the person who just left. That’s Trista. She’s the girl with the rabbits in the far corner. Poor girl. She’s got a really bad skin condition. Can’t let sunlight touch her.”
“Oh. Is she like… albino or something?”
“No, she’s got pigment. I don’t remember what the condition is called. I guess it started in high school or something. You’d have to ask her. And hey! If you work the night shift, you’ll probably get to chat with her!”
Petunia wasn’t wrong. I started working as a nighttime janitor for a number of local businesses. That was when I first started noticing the pale goth hippy. She rides around on a moped, with her dark hair and her sarong barely billowing behind her. I couldn’t see her face through the helmet, but she waved to me as she passed by.
The next time I saw her, she was jogging, but here’s where it gets weird. When I first stepped outside, all I saw was a blur. It actually startled me as I whipped toward it, but then there was this skinny tattooed pixie, somehow still looking like a stonehippy/vampire in jogging gear. I swear she was moving inhumanly fast when I first noticed her. That was when we introduced ourselves. She actually jogged over to say hello.
“Hey! You’re the new guy right?”
“Oh, uh, yeah. My name’s Mason!” I reached out to shake the pretty girl’s hand, like an awkward loser. She smirked and shook my hand. Her grip was weirdly strong, and a bit cold.
“I’m Trista. I’m the weirdo in the back with the rabbits.”
“Trista… oh, are you the one who has a thing with sunlight? I think Petunia mentioned you.”
“Yup! That’s me. Xerodoma pigmentosum. Sunlight hurts. I hate that it hurts.” She lamented.
“That’s gotta be rough,” I said sympathetically.
“You get used to it. You work at night?”
“Yeah. Works better for me.”
“I get that.”
And so on and so on. She’s pretty cool, with a bit of hilarious snark in there. And she secretly procured recreational weed she was willing to share. I kept working the night shift just hoping for another chance to talk to her and possibly buy a joint. Eventually she invited me over to share a joint. The inside of her place was actually pretty sparse and spartan compared to the outside. Though she was a fan of hanging beads. Most of the main room was taken up by her various crafting projects and supplies. Hemp weaves, some paintings, and even a wood carving of what I think was a rabbit, but it wasn’t anywhere near complete.
I followed her to her kitchen where she reached into the very back of her pantry and pulled out a shoebox. Inside was her stash, but there was something else which I found very strange. It was a pack of syringes and a thing I assume is to sterilize syringes. I know what you’re thinking, and that was my first thought too. It’s a poor neighborhood, the woman already smokes weed illegally, it’s not that big a shock that maybe she was involved in other drugs too. I decided not to ask at the time. We shared our joint, and we laughed, a lot. She made fun of me for being a lightweight, while I got completely hypnotized staring at the patterns of a shawl she had woven.
Months went by and we got closer, but I couldn’t forget those syringes. After a while I got worried. I’ve seen what heroine does to people. So the next time I went over to smoke and eat (vegan) pizza with her, I asked.
“Trista? Are you using anything other than weed?”
“Drugs?”
“Yeah.”
“No. Why?”
“You can tell me if you are.”
“Mason, sweetheart, I’m a stoner. I don’t fuck around with anything else and I never have.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Okay. Can I ask what that set of syringes are for?”
“Oh. In my stash box? Those are… part of my condition. I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Oh. Is it like… embarrassing?”
“Yeah. So don’t ask. Can we just watch a movie?”
So I don't ask anymore. But I still have no idea what she does with those syringes. Based on what I read about that Xerodoma Pigmentosum thing she says she has, I have no clue what she would need to inject herself with.
Another time she asked me to check on her rabbits for her during the day, as her usual “sitter” had something come up. All I had to do was chop up the lettuce and carrots she left out. As I was enjoying the adorable fluffy faces, one of Trista’s neighbors, a woman named Bridget, poked her head outside her door.
“Hey. Do you know what Trista injects those rabbits with?”
“I… what?”
“I’ve seen her use syringes on those rabbits. She said she was just giving them medicine, but I swear I see her inject them every week.”
“I… I wouldn't know. She just asked me to feed them.”
“I love Trista, but that always seemed so weird. She has to know vaccines are a hoax!” I tuned the woman out after that one. My mind was on that set of syringes. Why would she be using them on rabbits? These things were her pets.
I was starting to crush on her by then. But I couldn’t help feeling weirded out by that. I was actually going to confront her, but the next time I came to visit, she was literally inside the Rabbit hutch, on her back, squealing with delight as her rabbit friends nuzzled and played with her.
“Bonnibelle! That tickles! Marcy! No chewing. Finn? Watch where you’re sticking that foot! Jake? Where are you? EEEEE Lumpy! Not the neck!”
It was as silly and adorable as it sounds. She was forced to whip herself upright when two of her little friends tried to burrow under her dress. She finally stood up with a laugh, cradling a rabbit in her arms and cooing at it.
There was just no way in hell this woman was doing anything that would hurt these animals. Bridget is a paranoid antivax weirdo anyway. If Trista was using syringes on the rabbits, I was convinced it was only for their benefit.
So life went on. I got more and more reclusive over the years. Petunia, Trista, and my next door neighbor Fred were the only things keeping me remotely connected to the outside. And so we get to now. So let’s see. What are the stories about the weird vampire woman?
Well, there’s the fact that she jogs at night, solo, in a poor neighborhood. Petunia keeps the shitty people contained and behaving for the most part, but I still wouldn’t exactly call it safe, especially for a young skinny woman. But she does it without a care in the world.
There’s one strange event that some people like to connect to this. I never knew this guy, but from what I hear he was a total weirdo who leered at anyone even remotely female. And this is despite the fact he was married. His name was Josh.
I remember him a bit. He’s the guy that Petunia chased away from one of her barbecues. Supposedly he was heard saying inappropriate things to the groups of ten year old girls that were playing in the bounce house Petunia rented. Telling them how pretty they were. Trying to coax them to take off their jackets. Police reports were filed but ultimately nothing could be proven. The guy's wife, Carole, always defends him for some reason.
But anyway, I remember hanging out with Trista one night a little over a year ago. She hadn’t gone jogging like she normally did. I asked her what was up with that.
“That weirdo, Josh has started catcalling when I pass his place. It weirds me out.”
“There aren’t other people who do that at night? I’m still shocked you jog alone.”
“Not like this. I can flip off a wolf whistler. But this guy… he keeps trying to get me to stop and talk to him, and when I don’t? He shouts about my ass. I’m gonna have to talk to Petunia about that shithead, if anybody can reign him in, it’s her.”
I’m gonna guess she never got a chance. Two days later, the whole town was awoken by sirens. I was getting ready for my shift when I heard them. I walked down the road a bit to see if I could figure out what was going on. The cops were heading toward the other side of the park, so I couldn’t see much. But I did notice Trista, in her jogging gear, skulking in the shadows. I wondered if she was in trouble. But before I could call out to her, she sprinted straight to Petunia's house and banged on the door. Petunia welcomed her inside, and that was all I saw. I still wasn’t sure what was going on, so I just shrugged and headed to work, figuring I’d text Trista later.
I didn’t learn till later that Josh was found dead. He was lying prone, face down, partly hidden by bushes at the edge of the park. His neck was cut open. He’d bled out rapidly. He had a knife in his hand, and officially it’s believed he fell on it and accidentally killed himself. There was a cocktail of drugs in his system so most people accept that explanation. But others swear they saw Trista out for her jog around the same time Josh would have been bleeding to death. She got questioned, and she swore she didn’t see anything. Without evidence, there was nothing else that could be proven.
Trista’s a friend. I know that guy was being creepy to her. So I’m happy to take her word for what happened, even if my seeing her going to Petunia’s pokes a bit of a hole in that. I can’t be sure it was Trista though. So I’m not saying a word. But if a certain creep attacked a certain lady who is rumored to be a vampire, it’s not that surprising to me that he ended up dead after bleeding to death. I’m not all that broken up about it.
I’m not the one spreading that story. Josh’s wife was the one who started the rumor. So now some people are even more convinced that the weird nocturnal hippy chick is secretly a vampire.
She’s no killer. No matter what they say. She would only have defended herself.
So that’s all the stories I’ve heard that have any credibility to them. There’s more people who swear she and Petunia perform weird rituals, and people who saw her moving “inhumanly fast” and such.
But now I have to share what I found in the yearbooks Trista gave me. I wasn’t really expecting much. I checked her senior yearbook out first. She looks about the same. Pale, goth, hippy, and sort of sad. She kind of looks even sadder in these photos if I’m being honest, but that’s high school for you. She graduated in the top half of her class, no sports or extracurriculars. I’m left wondering how she managed to go to school at the time of sun was so bad for her. I’ll have to ask her about that. So nothing really new there.
It was the yearbook from her junior year where things got really interesting. I was in shock when I found her. Trista is somehow impossible to miss, but unrecognizable all at once. She’s full of color! She wore more typical tie dye hippy attire. Bright vibrant pinks, reds, blues, greens, and yellows, in every photo, and holy shit was she busy. Captain of the soccer team, first chair flutist, president of the “green living” club and the “vegan alliance,” top ten in her class, it was all incredible. I think the main reason I didn’t recognize her was her skin. It was tan, as though she were out in the sun a lot. Furthermore there were photos of her playing sports and standing outside in bright sunlight.
It was like her disease wasn’t there, which confused me. She told me it was something called Xeroderma Pigmentosa. But that’s a genetic condition. She would have had that from birth.
I sent her a text, wondering about this.
- Hey! Just went through your yearbooks. What happened? You had color? Did you discover Linkin Park?
- My disease happened. Right at the end of Jr. year. That’s why I wasn’t there for the final class photo.
- But your disease is genetic… isn’t it?
- I guess it was dormant in me.
- So it just… happened?
- Pretty much.
- I’m sorry.
- I got over it. Mostly. It was hard. My parents were both hardcore vegan naturalists and we lived in a place that was all natural light and such, so I had to live in a shed for a bit while they built a space for me. But in my family? We kinda lean into whatever life throws at us. It took months of depression to come to terms with it. All of a sudden I couldn’t be out in the sun, and I had new dietary needs that absolutely required non-vegan sources. So I leaned into it. I was a vampire now. I can dig dark colors and “vampire style.” I could make it my own by avoiding leather. And I’d be as vegan as I possibly could.
- You’re kind of awesome.
- Damn straight. So I learned to love the night too and now, here I am.
I gained new respect for her after that. Frankly I feel kinda shitty about making fun of her for being a vampire. There might not be anything paranormally weird about her after all.
She sent me one more text telling me I should talk to a guy named Frankie. She’d gone to school with him. He’s a decent enough guy. Works in the Bicounty mall in town.
I had to wait a day or two for another of Petunia’s get togethers to talk to him.
“Hey!” I said awkwardly as I tried to figure out how to strike up conversation with someone I haven’t really spoken to in a long time. “Frankie, right?”
“Oh. Yeah. Been a while. How are you Mason? You okay after that whole thing at Red Nights?”
“I’m trying to be. Look, I’ll cut to the chase. You went to school with Trista Ramone, right?”
“Ol’ Boho Ramone? Yeah. We were sort of friendly. But I was a jerk to vegans back then. Why do you ask?”
“I’ve been hanging out with her. She’s being all mysterious.” He chuckled at that. “She said I should talk to you to learn more about her… weirdness? Everyone thinks she’s a vampire now.”
“She’s totally a vampire. I have no idea what else to call her?”
“Why do you say that?”
“What did she tell you about school?”
“Nothing. She just showed me two yearbooks. Between Junior and Senior year she went from colorful club president, to lonely vampire, because of her disease.”
“Nah man. I don’t want to talk bad about her. But she was kind of a bitch, junior year. She wasn’t just a colorful vegan. She was one of those “holier than thou” types who scoffed and talked down to anyone who dared to eat meat. Her “hippy” thing meant she never hung out with the popular girls but still, she acted like she owned the place at times. I was friends with this weird guy named Steven Jones. He was just kind of a weirdo. Skulking around in the background, you know? He HATED Trista. For a while I totally understood. I thought she was kinda stuck up. But this guy was like… irrationally enraged by that girl’s existence. I guess he tried to ask her out when he was a freshman and she politely declined. But he took that shit personally.”
“Huh. So like… why’s that matter?”
“Because Steven kept saying to anyone who gave him a second look, that he was gonna ‘ruin’ her. Never elaborated. But then the last month of school rolls around, Trista gets assaulted by an unknown assailant and a week later she’s got this new disease. Meanwhile, Steven spent a week strutting around the school looking smug, and saying ‘she got what she deserved.’ Then he disappears too. Teachers said he moved away.”
“She was assaulted?”
“Yeah. Someone in a face wrap tackled her while she was at one of her protests at the meat factory. The dude freaking BIT her.”
“Jesus.”
“Yeah. I was there. I came to the protest. I’ll admit I was trying to hit on Trista or one of the other girls there. But yeah. Dude dressed in all gray with a face wrap just charged in and went right for Trista. Knocked her down, bit her like a freaking zombie, then ran away before anyone could stop him. Didn’t even take his face wrap off. It was freaky, man.”
“What the actual fuck.”
“That’s what we all said. Trista needed a stitch. But while she was at the hospital, I guess she started getting more symptoms. She was out for the rest of the year. From then on, she was like she is now. Total vampire.”
“Was Steven a vampire?”
“I dunno. Probably. Little dickhead is what he is. Must have been him that attacked Trista, but nobody could prove it. Bite mark didn’t match or something. So why are you asking? You hang out with her at night right? You asking her out or something?”
“Oh. No. Just a friend.”
That was all I really learned from Frankie. It’s quite a story, and it’s full of unknowns that Trista refuses to explain. So I guess I’ll let readers be the judge. Is she a “real” vampire? Or just a weirdo? All I know is, she’s totally standing behind me right now and now I’m dead. Bleh.
I did come back to life to talk to Trista once I finished writing this. She enjoyed it. I may as well include that interaction.
I went to her place on my night off. She read my take on her and what the neighbors thought and she grinned. “Ha! I’m a total monster!” She chuckled. “So. What do YOU think, Mason? Am I a vampire?” She cocked an eye and playfully gnashes her teeth at me, making a pleasant little click.
I sighed. “No idea. You’re Trista. And… you’re my friend. I’m sorry if I made things awkward.”
She looked surprised by that. “Aw. Thanks Mason. You’re my friend too. It’s okay. I’m flattered.”
“You don’t have to explain.”
“So we’re cool?”
“Absolutely not. We’re both weird shut ins.” She laughed. It was good to hear her laugh. It made me happy.
“Yeah but I got the ‘mysterious vampire’ thing going.”
“You have dirt in your hair from rolling around with bunnies. And you’re a vegan.”
“Bite me.”
“Says the vampire.”
“You know, if I were a vampire, I could have bitten you when we both went to the slaughterhouses a few weeks ago.”
“That just makes me stupid.”
“You’re not stupid, Mason. You’re not a loser either.”
“So. You know of any other good spooky town stories that I can do next?
“Oh, sure. You ever heard the tale of Salome? She was a witch who would mash up the seeds of a Sinapis Alba plant to make a diabolical potion she’d dump on herself. They called her the ‘Witch of the Sands.’”
I’m embarrassed to admit it took me four days to realize Trista was just fucking with me. I only figured it out when I looked up Sinapis Alba and learned that mashing the seeds just makes mustard. “Salomi the sand-witch.” Well played, vampire hippy…

2024.05.16 18:50 Reasonable_Swan9983 I'm just mad, let me rant please

There's nothing good about this anger, but I believe writing here will help me feel better.
I'm really suffering lately, it hurts to live in this world. Sometimes I wish I never had any kind of realisation. You guys are the closest people that I have found in terms of what I see.
I have a whole TWO friends. And they're good people, but so damn stupid. Way smarter than me in terms of education, but so damn... foolish. I feel like I'm ruining my friendship because I try to give hints about plant based diet and global warming. It's because I want to feel like I'm making a change in this world, visibly. If I saw someone going plant based, I would be so happy. Not in a "my tribe" kind of thing. Just it would feel wonderful (I think!)
The origin of my anger is, I posted one chart to my friend today. Then dived into a discussion... and he started flooding me with messages. I know he likes arguing with people online, so I shoudl've expected that...
Some of the things he told me:
What has a life of a being to do with anything if its already dying and doesn't bring anything to this world other than being food?
If you ever saw these videos, cows are going into the barn wilfully and they want to be milked
99,99% of animals dies with dignity, people have worse health care and these are the facts
Videos from farms and slaughterhouses are cherry picked and it's like showing violence on the street and comparing it to living in a healthy household
The point of these politics is throwing animals away to China and slaughter them there, so it's out of the civilised countries. Lots of people don't know this, but China wants this.
Guys, you don't need to give arguments back to these points. When I get bombarded and bullied with messages like this, I feel like I'm the one in the wrong. I know what he writes is so fucking stupid but it's like my brain is still insecure and doubts myself.

2024.05.16 18:29 dikercarnivore The Truth About the Carnivore Diet: Does Red Meat Cause Inflammation?

Understanding inflammation and its impact on health

Before we delve into the specific effects of red meat on inflammation, it's important to understand the broader context of inflammation and its implications for our health.
Inflammation is a natural immune response that helps the body defend against infection, injury, and other threats. However, when inflammation becomes chronic or excessive, it can lead to a range of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
The facts of our modern diets and lifestyles, characterized by inflammatory grains, sugars, and seed “vegetable” oils, keep our inflammation simmering at a chronic level. Our bodies experience these substances as harmful “antigens.” And it responds by constantly producing antibodies that damage healthy tissues and organs.
The importance of reducing inflammation cannot be overstated.
And at least 60% of the American population have at least one chronic inflammatory condition.

The importance of reducing inflammation cannot be overstated.
And at least 60% of the American population have at least one chronic inflammatory condition.

The role of nutrients in red meat and their impact on inflammation

One of the key factors in understanding the relationship between red meat and inflammation is the nutrient profile of red meat.
Red meat is an excellent source of high-quality protein, as well as a rich source of essential vitamins and minerals, such as iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. These nutrients play a crucial role in supporting the body's immune function and reducing inflammatory processes.
There is one other survey study that may provide a more reliable insight into the effects of meat on inflammation. It was conducted by Harvard researchers in 2021 and collected responses from 2029 people on the carnivore diet.
This more restrictive version of the ketogenic diet calls for consuming only animal products, is centered around fatty red meat, and eliminates all plant foods. The researchers found that 89% improved or resolved autoimmune conditions.
Taken together, the preponderance of evidence tells us that red meat is not more inflammatory than non-red meat and oily fish. And that it is likely less inflammatory than carbs.

Fresh red meat is also no longer believed to cause cancer, stroke, or heart disease. Our modern diets and lifestyles, characterized by inflammatory grains, sugars, and seed "vegetable" oils, keep our inflammation simmering at a chronic level. A study from 2007 where participants replaced carbohydrates with red meat showed significant reductions in inflammatory markers.

Cheers Carnivores !

Please don't post lies, block me and shut down comment responses. The only ones trying to clout is you off my name.
Orochisama i don’t even know who you are. Black Twitter?
Who Says I’m involved in black Twitter?
Most of the Conversations on Twitter revolve around rupaul drag Race, LGBTQ, Ballroom, current events or marvel comics. 😂🤣 I don’t get in fights with spiritualists about bullshit on Twitter i only respond to what is said about me. I have 25K followers on twitter. I'm not a 140 character drama type of person. I usually have more to say.
I never said You were white because i don’t know who you are. Remember i have a picture and you do not, you have me blocked. A Verified Check is something most people have especially if they have been published for anything or they paid for it. Again, been there done that before ATRs was ever involved in my life.
I have problems with black women? Literally a black women showed me this blocked post. 75% of my audience is black women on tiktok and most of my clients since i only read or do spiritual work for yt people, i don’t initiate or mentor them in ATRs, too many problems over the years and Everyone knows my policies and boundaries. It is ok to have boundaries.
Just like it is ok to have your own opinion about lgbtq community and you do not have to agree with the current controversial topic.
It's the bullshit y'all that you make up. I don't care about you being pansexual or poly. Hello I'm in my 40s, do you google?
How many videos do i have on youtube since 2016 talking respect and inclusion in ATRs in Sputh asian Communities (something I'm know for internationally in usa, Canada, uk and Trinidad still hence the art exhibit i was asked to be apart of last month). Who outed himself to the Palo community because people did not know? Do you know why?
I walked away from a certain bar too early and my ex (a Puerto Rican since you think only they are taino) was shot. Yes I'm talking about pulse. I recently talked about my experience with beau DeMayo on twitter because the xmen97 episode triggered me. Again this is all public conversations.
Do you know what the ballroom scene is? Especially in Philly and DC?? It's funny how i have icon femme queens that ask me to contribute on podcasts and discussion groups while I'm involved in the kiki scene in Brazil. I have been on several live shows with just trans people inside and outside ATRS. Again this can be found. Or how many clients I've had on lgbt reality shows?
If i needed to talk about clout then i would do that, but i don't? They know me, i don't talk about them because i don't use my client’s info to get likes and views. They respect the fact i keep their privacy.
I have never taken a hoodoo class. Where did you get that lie from? Where is the receipt for that? Please show.
I talk about herbs all the time for free with every consultations.
I don’t even use books for spell work. I post it online and it's copied, you think i got that from a book?
Do you know How to go into any yard or Woods and identify plants herbs and roots? Do you know which is poisonous and what is not? Do you know what can you use
So Jamaicans and haitians don’t have tainos? Just Asking Go ask around Philadelphia to Virginia who the younger family is. It's a unique enough surname with only three family trees splits all over the country. You might find a few black baptist churches still functioning. My paternal grandfather was a pastor too. I didn't even hear the word hoodoo growing up, i heard root? I heard juju or conjure. My family did not even venerate catholic saints despite immigrating through new Orleans.
You are upset i have a patron? that my followers and clients asked for because they want to learn. I have Dropbox of over 1000 books and journal articles on various traditions? The price is $5 for unlimited access. It's 1 terabyte. I pay $20/ month for my Dropbox hosting. You think it should be free? All the documents i collected since 2009 in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, kreyol and Arabic? It should be free? No one offers their Dropbox for free unless it's uncurated mess of misinformation about ATRs.
It has nothing to do with you being queer or lgbt, you just want to use my energy and resources for free and for me to shut up about it. That's entitlement for just existing? I'm sorry i grew up in the 80s and 90s i had to study and literally advocate for myself for everything just to go to a white school and to get into college because my white teachers told me “you are black and don't need to go to college”. I didn't grow up with random people just giving me things because i had a fit or i added a new identity label. Sorry I'm old i guess I'm exhausted and I'm not impressed by laziness or mediocrity.
If someone doesn't know what they are doing, i am not going to say they are a prize or a resource. I am not good at lying, my face always tells. So i do not waste time doing it. I don't make up things when people can easily find it.
It amazes me how you get on Reddit and write 3 pages trying to tell me who i am and you don't even know who you are yet.
And whose has threats? I make observations and promises. Nature runs on energetic reciprocity, and auto determination. Every life form has a survival instinct down to the cellular level. If someone decides to throw work at me, i throw it back and i don't care what happens or how long it happens because it is self defense. Whatever my spirits from the “supermarket sweep” decide needs to be done to you or your family that distracts you enough to leave me alone. Some people are not here anymore and the community may miss them but i do not. And i do not have to.
There are spiritualists who have been throwing work at me since 2015, some 2012. Some i have never met in person, never touched them. I got tired of cleansing with herbs and animals and ignoring them, because they came up again and again in every divination, every ceremony, in every country. And even when i almost died years ago, i still turned the other cheek, i only talked shit and i didn't do anything more.
But after people attacked my mom, guess what? i have no pity anymore for anyone in the spiritual community because my mom was the one that helped anyone, she was the one that was helping migrant workers, protesting for rights since college, she was the nurse that made me take care of my parapalegic aunt and grandmother since i was 8 years old, she was the one that taught me to be a good person no matter what people say about you. She was the one that took care of other people's children when they got sick, she took people to chemotherapy and a breast cancer advocate in her 60s! She did all that and what she received was abandonment when she could no longer help other people. They stole all her money, told her she had no more use and let her die by herself and would have if i did not move to help. And then motherfuckers have the audacity to post my mother’s photo and post about her struggles, her pain, and even said she killed herself which was not true! I saw what being nice to your enemies gets you. I don't have time for it. And i have no remorse for anything that happens to anybody after they physically or spiritually attack me. You are supposed to be spiritual, you are supposed to be better, do better, be able to make better decisions but if you do not, the blame is on you and not me.
A snake does not threaten, it warns about consequences and possibilities, that's it. That's nature.
The community exposes criminals and lifts them back up again. So i have no faith in their grandiose gestures because they have done it over and over and nothing happened. It's weak shit
You don't like me Because of my opinion that's fine. I have no problem with an opinion, only the lies, and trying to artificially put a one sided narrative is the issue.

2024.05.16 17:55 Awot2000 Graphical shortcomings of some features for the render dragon engine in the mobile android minecraft bedrock edition from 1.20 to 1.21.0.26 / 1.22 - 1.23.

Graphical shortcomings of some features for the render dragon engine in the mobile android minecraft bedrock edition from 1.20 to 1.21.0.26 / 1.22 - 1.23.
It’s a pity that starting with 1.20 and 1.21 in minecraft bedrock edition, due to the addition of a new graphics engine render dragon and new graphic shader functions for mobile Android devices, the code functionality for creating third-party fan-made shaders similar to those in java with the ability to create a wind of plants stopped working in the game itself. and the water waves are not like in the GIF format, no, but as in the java version, namely in the format (random wind physics in a random order with any random second of acceleration and deceleration of the speed of turning and turning in any direction) this applies to both (foliage with grass) and and (to water and under water) I repeat once again not in the GIF format of the animation of the png texture of the grass and water, but as with the help of a specifically written code on the game engine itself, as at the level of java shaders, namely such as sildur's enhanced default or seus shaders or a vanilla shader, those who played in java with shaders will understand what exactly is missing in the render dragon engine code right now for minecraft bedrock edition mobile on version 1.21.0.26 and higher including 1.22 and 1.23, etc. other future versions of the game.
I’ll say right away that this applies only to the mobile and Windows versions of minecraft bedrock for the render dragon engine in terms of creating third-party wind and water waves as on the java edition - PC and not as a GIF, once again I will say not as a GIF but as physics using the game code itself written in the game engine itself as in the java edition.

2024.05.16 17:44 adstrict4527 Animals should be able to eat, breed and starve on their own. (Minecraft Ecosystems!)

We already have animals that eat plants, hunt other animals, and some mobs can even breed on their own (villagers)
I know "ecosystems" in Minecraft sound complicated, but I think there’s a vanilla friendly way to do it with just 2 simple rules:

The 2 Basic Rules of the Ecosystem:

  1. All animal mobs require constant food or they will eventually starve and die (without giving any drops.)
  2. Animals who get more than enough food will breed on their own.
Both of these rules happen SLOWLY overtime. Manual breeding is still the fastest way to get animals, they'll now just need a source of renewable food like grass blocks to avoid starvation.
But with just those 2 rules you can simulate entire ecosystems everywhere in Minecraft!
Unfortunately in Minecraft right now this would be pretty unbalanced and most animals would eventually reproduce way too much or become extinct. How can we fix this to make default worlds a little more self-sustaining?

Basic ideas to help balance things:

  • Any area that spawns with a large amount of herbivores (Cows, Sheep, Chicken, Pigs, Rabbits, etc.) also needs to spawn near by predators (Foxes, Wolves, Polar Bears, etc.) to keep their population in check. (and vice versa!)
  • Since grass is SO abundant, it should provide less food points. Enough to keep an animal alive, but it would take awhile for them to eat enough to be able to reproduce. Rarer plants like tall grass and flowers provide more food points and encourage breeding.
  • When an animal dies of starvation on grass, it will act like bonemeal and create more of these rarer extra nourishing plants. If herbivore populations start dying out they'll naturally be given more food to help balance them!
  • The AI of predators and prey will need to be improved to make them better at hunting and avoiding being eaten.
  • And in order to truly have a balanced system there would probably just need to be more variety of predators, prey and plant food sources to fit each of Minecraft’s environments.
It would need lots of tweaks, but ideally this would make the default Minecraft world full of balanced, self sustaining ecosystems, that only the player could mess up.

The players effect on these ecosystems:

  • If a players removes too many of one type of an animal in an area, not only are you likely to cause it to go extinct there, but you’re also hurting all the nearby animals that depend on it.
  • If you remove all the predators in an area, the herbivore’s population will increase and they will overeat their plant food source. All the grass, flowers and mushrooms will eventually be eaten faster than they can grow back leaving the area barren, and eventually the herbivores will starve.
  • If you remove the plants in an area for your own buildings, it can harm the entire ecosystem!
  • If you introduce non native plants or animals into new environments, they may immediately die off or worse: outcompete the existing ecosystem and cause catastrophic effects!
If all of this sounds too drastic, keep it mind that it happens slowly over a long period of time, you have time to help your ecosystem recover! It can also be disabled as a gamerule if it just doesn't interest you at all.
Okay that's the idea, thanks for reading!
/
You're still here?
Okay if you wanted to take this a step further and create truly realistic adaptable ecosystems... I’d suggest one final rule...

Rule 3: Evolution!

  1. All animals’ have unique stats. They’re a combination of their parents + a small random factor. The better stats they have, the more food points they require to survive and breed.
This may sound too complicated, but we already have this mechanic with horses, so I think it would fit nicely in this system.
This is essentially basic evolution. Natural selection would make it so only the animals with stats that best benefit their specific environment will survive.
Areas with high food but high predators will develop stats that help them escape easier. Areas with low food will develop worse stats that require less food. Areas with low food but high predators will need to develop behaviors to avoid predators that don't cost more food (like hiding instead of running)
Here are all the stats that animals can change through reproduction:
  • Movement speed (High food point cost)
  • Health (High food point cost)
  • Amount of offspring they have (High food point cost)
  • How good is their range of vision for seeing predators, food, and finding mates? (Medium food point cost)
  • Do they run from predators or hide from them? (Running would use up food points)
  • How much do they randomly wander around? (Wandering would use up food points)
  • Do they want to stay close to other animals or avoid them? (No cost difference, but this effects competition for resources and chances of escaping a predator.)
This is just a very rudimentary proof of concept idea. I can think of many other ways to build off of it, but to keep things simple I'll leave it at this for now.
What do you think? Does this ruin Minecraft? Is it all too complicated? I think it would be tricky to get right, but it makes the animals in the game much more interesting and teaches the player the consequences for messing with the environment, which I think Mojang wants.

2024.05.16 17:41 gefecht Looking for plant recommendations for this current setup.

Hello all, I finally finished the hardscape on my paludarium I am working on. This is my first build of this style. (Have built reptile enclosures before)
I am looking for recommendations for types of plants for both land and underwatefloating. I already put in some moss and ferns. This will be for vampire crabs foremost. Looking to put some porthos in the corners.
It is a 45 gallon bow front tank I repurposed. There is approximately 9 to 10 gallons of water underneath the landmass. There is an underwater cave system. The water is dark because of tannins/coco fiber that fell in the water. Looking to have that eventually clear up as the tannins are filtered out through water changes.
Currently planning on vampire crabs, possibly a few small fast fish in the water portion. Some shrimp. Already have isopods and springtails. There will still be probably a month before I try to introduce the crabs. (Also, how many could I have without crowding in this size paludarium)
Attaching a few pictures to give a general idea of where it is currently. I apologize for picture quality) There is a stream/ waterfall that feeds quite a bit of the land area. Humidity is very easily maintained for up to 97 percent. (Adjustable) Ambient temp is 97 degrees currently. (Also adjustable)
I am open to any and all suggestions. As I believe all animals deserve the best living conditions possible. (Planning on fabricating a top (lid) this weekend.
Thank you.

2024.05.16 17:20 Death_Sw0rn There is no point in life. You go from nothing, to something, and then back into into nothing

We didn't exist for trillions of years, and then one day we suddenly appear because two people decided to breed. Now, we're automatically forced into the rat race, competing in everything from school and college to relationships and jobs. It's all just a completely pointless rat race. We're here to compete and strive to reach the top, only to lose it all in the end. When you die, your experiences and your money wont come with you. You'll return to the pre-birth state of non-existence. You go from nothing, to something, and then back to nothing.
It's such a pointless cycle. If life were at least entertaining, I wouldn't mind its pointlessness so much. But unfortunately, life is not only pointless but also boring. Birds can fly, tigers can run at incredible speeds, and monkeys can swing around like Naruto characters. What do we humans have? Nothing we do is interesting or cool. We spend our time in concrete boxes because we can't tolerate certain weather conditions. We can't do anything impressive like fly, run fast, or even fictional things like teleportation or invisibility.
Instead, we spend most of our lives working and doing boring, menial tasks. For 99% of people over the age of 18, most of our waking hours are consumed by school or work. The sheer dullness of life and our physical limitations make the pointlessness of life irredeemable.
Personally, I wish I had never been born. If I had to exist on this earth, I would have preferred to be a plant or a cool animal. But now that I'm here without my consent, I have no choice but to exist and be a slave until I die, trapped in a boring human body incapable of doing anything interesting. I honestly wish we had never evolved from monkeys because having so much intelligence and awareness of the world around us has been our downfall. Ants don't become depressed when they have to work together to make a living. Neither do most animals. But since we are the most intelligent and aware, that really just makes our lives shittier because we know how depressing and pointless it is.
But now that I'm here, there's nothing I can do but wait until I die. I have no choice but to be a slave to money until I die. Having to pay taxes and bills just to exist. I'm trapped in a life where I'm judged and belittled for not excelling in this pointless rat race. A rat race that doesn't matter, because we are all going to die in the end. And I didn't ask to play this stupid game. I was forced into it by two fools.
Human life is probably the most boring, mundane, monotonous game there is in existence. I am jealous of plants. They are alive, but their existence is very brief, simple, and there is no suffering. Even when they die there is no suffering. It simply isn't fair at all, but hey at least one day this garbage will be over.

2024.05.16 16:46 ducklife Duck Life 9: The Flock - Full game release on Steam

Hello pcgaming,
I started working on the Duck Life series when I was 14 years old, and since then, I've successfully launched 8 chapters of the series. After almost 2 years of hard work, I have finally released my most ambitious project to date! As a small indie studio, we could not have accomplished this monumental achievement without the support of our fans and beta testers. The Duck Life series has been a labour of love for us here at Wix, so thank you for hopefully coming along on this adventure with me!
Duck Life 9: The Flock is a game where ducks are still finding new ways to do what they do best - honing their skills and racing their way to the top! This chapter takes the fundamentals of the older games, where you raise a duckling to become a racing champion, while also a boatload of new features - the main one being the ability to cultivate a larger collection of ducks and build them a snug little home on Featherhaven Island. You’ll still find an array of training games (which the franchise is famous for) and mini-games to progress through, but this time, it’s taking place in a much more ambitious 3D space, with farming, fishing, fashion, and more.
Launch Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ_DfFFdo_4
Steam store page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2416880/Duck_Life_9_The_Flock/
Our Discord community: https://discord.gg/xXVcMYC5xe
Key features
So right off the bat, the game already has dozens of hours of content. We have a tight knit and flourishing community over at the Discord, so come join us! I'm always there hanging out, taking feedback, and discussing the game.

How can I create a beautiful ecosystem in my backyard?
Fiance and I moved into an old fixer upper. We have already started with renovations to the house and now are wondering what we should do with the backyard. We want the trees to stay and have an idea for seating and egg swings around the fire pit to bring that space. We also plan to renovate the playground.
I want a beautiful backyard ecosystem. (lots of plants, small gardens, bird feeders/baths, etc.) I also don’t know if the yard is big enough to add a small greenhouse and possibly a small little place for animals (either chickens or pigs) in a few years.
I tend to be overly ambitious at times so I don’t know if this is all possible. Any ideas to bring this backyard to life would be appreciated! And also please let me know if I should bring down my expectations for everything I want 😂 I don’t want the space to look over crowded.
The land is half an acre for reference, thanks!

Where *did* those flowers come from?
When Eren makes the split-second decision to shift in order to save Armin and Mikasa, Armin notes that there's clusters of flowers that weren't there before. Titan abilities haven't shown anything outside of affecting solely the wielder of the Power of the Titans, and certainly no powers involving plant growth (indeed, the Hardening ability could be considered an extreme example of biomineralization as seen in various animal species).
I don't recall any other information regarding it, so... what exactly caused those flowers to bloom?

2024.05.16 16:07 Hurricane-Dragon Dreaming About Having the Power of the Land Again

It’s another lucid dream where I have the power of the land. This dream continues after the one where I was transformed into a piece of land during a solar eclipse and given the power to manipulate the land itself, the one where I met a teenage girl and botanist in training named Kris and a sentient Darksider flower that joined the group after being defeated. Speaking of the Darksiders, they’ve come along with the solar eclipse, and transformed humans into monsters partially made of wood or steel. With the recap out of the way, onto my dream. Kris and I were wandering through the forest that I was slowly traversing the soil of. I was slowly spreading the part of the land I was transformed into so I can integrate the land in the forest into the piece of land I had become. Essentially I was making my actual body, the land itself, much larger so I have a wider range of land to manipulate. Kris had gotten used to living atop me, but I on the other hand haven’t gotten used to being the land itself despite still having a physical body. Kris told me that she doesn’t see me, at least she doesn’t describe it as seeing per se. She just seems to be able to feel me. “Whenever your presence is near, there’s a heavy and thick sense of security in the land and the surrounding area, Jett,” she told me. “Which is how you know I’m around?” I asked. Kris nodded. I don’t know how it’s possible for her to do that, but I feel seen and heard now. ANYWAY, I am still not used to being the land itself even though it comes with an arsenal of powers. Once I have integrated the land in the forest into the land that’s part of my body, Kris grabbed a bag full of seeds and I then put my hunch of if I can use my power of the land to grow plants to the test. I touched the soil with my finger and began tilling it as I stepped backwards. The tilled soil is perfect for growing plants, and Kris placed the seeds into the tilled soil Then I used my amplified power of the land to make the plants grow. I folded my arms as I admired my handiwork. Then, I felt Kris’s hand on my shoulder as she reminded me of the next task there was to take care of. But just then, I sensed and grabbed a piece of dark essence that was on her shirt, absorbing it. I don’t want her to be transformed into a Darksider too. “Oi, ya know what’s causing people to become Darksiders?” I asked the flower. “The sunlight is the cause,” the flower Darksider responds, “it’s packed with the same dark essence you absorbed from the defeated Darksiders.” Both my eyes and Kris’s eyes widened in realization. This means she’ll have to avoid the sunlight if she wants to stay a human. It’s not a problem for me or the flower though. We’re unaffected by it. The dark essence is what makes Darksiders more powerful, and that applies to me too. It also makes me more powerful. The more Dark Essence I absorb, the more powerful I become. But that unfortunately also goes for the Darksiders too. My mastery over the land is growing during my time with Kris. She was sticking to the shade since the Darksider flower and I are unaffected by the dark essence in the sunlight. We both know that the transformation is a constant occurrence from the Darksider Flower telling me of it. “Jett, do your goggles work?” Kris asked me. To find out, I slide my goggles over my hazel eyes and activated the technological modifications that I have made to them before I had been transformed into a piece of land. I activated the X-ray vision function in them to see past the vegetation so I can keep a lookout for any Darksiders or more survivors. I spotted both, and there are 4 survivors—all of which were girls. The Darksider was once their friend. He had a metal blade where his right hand should be as a Darksider. And just when he was about to swing his blade, the land grabbed the Darksider’s ankle and made him fall over. I slowly rose from the soil, standing with my arms folded. “Get your filthy arse away from them,” I growled, standing behind him. The Darksider turned to face me when he got up, and when he swung his blade it broke against my stony body causing me to narrow my eyes. “Please,” I scoffed, I stomped my boot against the ground and a rippling shockwave traveled through the land itself, throwing the Darksider against the tree. Pointing down, I opened a chasm in the land while he was falling so he’ll land in it. I opened my hand to manifest stone spikes at the bottom and then he was impaled by the spikes. “Rest in peace,” I told him. I clasped my hands together and then the soil devoured the Darksider, dragging him underground and killing him instantly. I absorbed the dark essence, and then the ground looked like nothing happened to it. The four girls were dumbfounded. I have mastery of the land now. Kris approached the girls. “What are your names?” Kris asked them, wanting to know. The girls identified themselves as a blonde girl named Tempest, a short redhead named Star, a white haired teen named Jackie and a brunette named Kendall. “Stick to the shade, ladies,” I advised, “the sunlight from the eclipse is what’s making people become Darksiders.” They joined me and Kris at our safe haven. It’s got plants growing there for food and everything. All of which was my mastery of the land and Kris’s knowledge of botany. It was our handiwork. I headed to the shelter after I rescued four survivors—four girls named Kendall, Star, Tempest and Jackie. All of whom know Kris. In the shelter I made for them, the 5 friends hung out together. They can’t see me even though I’m around, but they can hear my voice and feel my presence. Whenever I’m around, there’s a thick and heavy sense of security in the land. The Darksider flower had appeared before me. “I don’t understand why humans would want to join up in groups,” the flower said to me. I spoke with a thick Australian accent. “That’s ‘cause humans will watch each other’s backs and help each other when they’re in need,” I explained, “I should know ‘cause I useta be one.” The flower seems to understand plant behaviors better than animal or human behaviors. I myself am a Darksider, but what makes me different from the others is that I still have my intellect intact. It didn’t take long for things to change. I sensed something was odd and saw a Darksider coming out. Four of the five teenage girls immediately got a move on right away. Kris slipped out from behind the Darksider and joined her friends in fleeing to safety. I made the stone shelter collapse on the Darksider when the five of them escaped. The Darksider fired off the grappling hook replacing his left arm, and I erected a stone wall to block it and protect Star, who was the last one of the group to flee. He reeled in the grappler and broke the stone wall before he threw the five ladies off the edge of the cliff. Acting fast, I used my power of the land to create a stone slide which safely brought them to the bottom of the cliff. With those five safe, I turned my attention back to the Darksider before me so I can fight him. During the fight, I was getting my ass whooped. My attempt to stop his grappler failed and my right arm got destroyed. The grappling hook also blew a hole through my chest. The problem is that my body needs to be fortified, and I found out soon enough that the answer to my question of bodily reinforcement lied in the same thing that I was in symbiosis with—plant roots. Plant roots started growing on my body and began to close up the hole in my chest as well as replace my destroyed arm. Using the roots, I was able to catch the grappling hook the next time he fired it at me, then I ripped his left arm clean off. I suddenly heard Kris’s voice from behind as he attacked me a second time. “Jett, catch!” Kris called to me, tossing me a pair of garden shears she pulled from her backpack. I caught the garden shears by calculating the trajectory and perfectly timing when their handles will be in range. “Garden shears? Well, it’s better than nothing,” I told her. I improvised and infused the garden shears with my power of the land and the flexibility of plants, which turned them into something far more powerful to wield. “Let me show you the power of the land!” I declared, dashing ahead. I wielded the garden shears, slicing off the Darksider’s right arm and dealing with his wooden tendrils in the process. With no arms to defend himself, I slashed his face and he fell against the ground. The sentient flower gave me advice on how to finish him off, telling me to absorb his nutrients. And then roots started holding him against the ground. “It’s game over,” I told him, and then he was dragged underground to have his nutrients drained—and his dark essence drained along with it. As for Kris and the girls, they felt bad. The Darksider I defeated was once their friend, like all of the other Darksiders were once humans. I defeated the Darksider without regret. After all, every Darksider is a threat that needs to be killed on sight. I gotta hand it to Kris though, this weapon is pretty cool. I never thought about turning garden shears into a combat weapon, but if you know me then you’ll know that I’m good at improvising.

2024.05.16 15:46 deepfriedtrashbag Q & A, because I'm crazy lol (Fin Rot)

So I got a Betta from a pet store. My understanding of treatment for finrot, which is what I believe he has, is that you just do 50% water changes more often (3-4 days instead of 7 between changes) and after 2-3 weeks if the fins still look tragic or are getting worse add an antibacterial medication to the tank. Basically to give the little friend new water, because that's always good and fin rot is often a water quality issue, and to see if it is a bacterial thing or not.
Is this correct?
What have those of you that have dealt with fin rot done?
When is the earliest date that I can do a water change/cleaning? My fishy friend is from the pet store, I am fairly confident that this is just an issue from being a living animal that poops being in a very small area for any amount of time let alone a prolonged. I don't want to stress him out but it's been 3 days today, so I'd prefer to do it tomorrow if possible.
If I'm combating this, should I wait longer than a week to put live plants into his tank? I'm waiting a week so he can feel good about things, settle in, and so I can observe the behavior of this little guy easiebetter. I plan on putting 2 in at once, and then 1 in with a snail after rearranging the tank a bit so he doesn't have anything that feels like "his territory" yet to try and avoid territorial behavior.
In addition to this I'm reading about the topic(s) as well. I've been reading about the plants and snails for a while, but I just noticed the fin rot last night since it's only on the part of his dorsal fin that's close to his body. I'd just prefer to ask for experienced advice while comparing notes from online resources (including this sub).
