2024.05.16 14:44 FoldIllustrious6788 What art projects to give a class that only fights 24/7?

Hello all, I am desperately looking for help. I am split between two schools teaching elementary art.
My second school is absolutely outrageous and I have a headache thinking about my first class already. Last week two students completely destroyed my classroom from fighting. It’s a fight every SINGLE day I’m here.
I don’t know what to give them. I have tried to teach them countless times but fighting is more important. I have also given worksheets only but still it’s major behavior issues. I’m not the only one that struggles with their behavior, they have had about 5 different homeroom teachers this year….
I’m also the 4th art teacher they have had this year.
What would you do with these classes?

2024.05.16 10:38 I_Eat_Pork These are the important plans and intentions of the Dutch coalition agreement

These are the important plans and intentions of the Dutch coalition agreement
"Hope, guts and pride" is the name of the coalition agreement of PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB. In 26 pages they spell out what they plan to do. "Whether it's about security of existence, healthcare or money in the wallet, or the availability of sufficient housing, our ambition is great," the four write in the introduction to what they themselves call an outline agreement. "We also want to reverse the far too high influx of asylum seekers and immigrants. We want farmers, gardeners and fishermen to have a future again." The new coalition has broken down the intended policies, many of which still have to be worked out by the future cabinet, into 10 chapters. Below are the main points for each chapter:

Subsistence security and purchasing power

The four parties have agreed that the deductible in health care will be more than halved. This will only happen in 2027, because earlier would not be possible. Now there is still a mandatory deductible of 385 euros per year. That would then become 165 euros per year. Furthermore, the coalition wants a reduction in the burden on labor "for example by introducing an extra bracket in the Income Tax." And the four want to encourage job security, improve debt relief and make child care almost free for parents.

Grip on asylum and migration

As announced, the coalition is heading for the strictest asylum package ever. Thus there will be a temporary Asylum Crisis Act with crisis measures. In the event of a "crisis," far-reaching measures can be taken. The indefinite asylum permit will be abolished and the temporary residence permit will be modified. Asylum seekers who have been rejected will be "deported as much as possible, including by force." Also, asylum seekers with residency permits will no longer be given priority in the allocation of social housing. Automatic family reunification will also be scrapped, and the number of people allowed to chain migrate will be "severely restricted." The agreement also states that the dispersal law is to be undone (much to the chagrin of the law's creator). The new coalition wants to repeal the law, which has already been passed by both the House and Senate. Furthermore, the coalition wants to seek permission from the European Commission not to participate in European asylum and migration policy, and wants more border control and the introduction of the dual status system. Asylum is not the only form of migration the coalition wants to combat. There will be additional requirements for migrant workers from outside the EU, and "malicious temporary employment structures" will be cracked down on. Study migration will be curbed, including by offering more courses in Dutch, a cap on foreign students and an increase in tuition fees for non-EU students. As for civic integration, the four want knowledge of the Holocaust to become mandatory and language requirements to be raised. Under the same heading is regulation of amplified prayer calls [of mosques].

(Public) housing, infrastructure, public transportation and aviation

Structurally, 100,000 new homes must be added each year. One way to do this is to make more land available for building. "'Adding streets, inside and outside of cities." the agreement states. Procedures to build must also be accelerated.
For people who already inhabit a home, the coalition wants to curb rent increases (in social housing). Of new construction, at least 30 percent on average must be for social rent. For homeowners, the increase in property taxes will be capped. And also important for this group: "there will be no tampering with the mortgage interest tax deduction." In terms of infrastructure, 130 kilometers per hour may be driven "whereever possible" again, including during the day. Furthermore, the accessibility of rural areas must be improved "by strengthening bus transport between village centers in the countryside" and the construction of the Lelylijn, a train connection between Lelystad and Groningen, will continue.

Agriculture and fisheries, food security, and nature

Regarding agriculture, the BBB's spearhead, the coalition wants to "pull out all the stops" to adapt European directives. Efforts are being made to adapt the Nitrates Directive and "recalibrate" Natura 2000 areas. "Aimed at a main structure of robust nature areas instead of 'snippet nature'." The agreement also states that the Netherlands should no longer pursue a more ambitious nature policy than the rest of Europe. The coalition does not want a forced reduction of livestock. Nor should there be any forced expropriation. However, there should be generous voluntary buyouts and plenty of effort should be put into innovation in agriculture. Striking: the cheaper "red diesel" is coming back for farmers, horticulturists and contract workers. Despite the fact that in 2013, that low excise tax rate for diesel was actually scrapped.

Energy, security of supply and climate adaptation

In terms of climate policy, the coalition wants to stick to existing goals, the agreement states. "Only if we fail to meet the targets will we make alternative policies," it says. The climate fund also remains intact. From that billion dollar fund, established by the current cabinet, climate measures are financed. The fund also provides money for the development of nuclear energy. The new coalition is heading for four large new nuclear power plants, and not two, as previously thought. The parties want to focus on more energy independence and own sustainable energy production. Furthermore, the heat pump will not be made mandatory after all. The current cabinet had thought of that, but it has been scrapped. Subsidies for electric cars to be scrapped by 2025.

Public facilities, healthcare and education

The four parties want to strengthen primary care, including general practitioner, district nursing and informal care. Furthermore, working in care (where there is a large staff shortage) must become more attractive. This should be done "by means of more autonomy, career prospects, good working conditions and limitation of regulatory and administrative burdens." There should also be better care for the elderly. In terms of education, teaching methods used should be "proven effective and otherwise politically neutral" and 'Englishification' should be reduced. On medical ethics, everything remains as it is. "The legal frameworks remain unchanged" around embryos, abortion and euthanasia.

Good governance and strong rule of law

The coalition is sorting out a new electoral system for the House of Representatives. Exactly what that should look like remains to be determined. In any case, it should strengthen "the regional link between voters and elected officials." The intention is to have the system in place by the next elections. Furthermore, steps must be taken for a constitutional revision so that laws can be tested against the Constitution. And by extension, steps should also be taken for the formation of a constitutional court to conduct constitutional review (a fervent wish of NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt). There will also be "a right to err". "A single mistake can no longer push a citizen deep into trouble," the new coalition believes. Dunning and collection costs of the government will be sharply reduced. Also, the number of civil servants and consultants in the government is to be cut, and a cut of one hundred million euros has been booked for public broadcasting. Hotel stays will become more expensive because the VAT rate will return to 21 percent. VAT on cultural goods and services will also go up, but not for cinemas and day recreation.

Domestic security

In the area of security in the Netherlands, the four want to strengthen the approach to organized crime. "Greater efforts will be made to confiscate assets" and "the anti-money laundering approach will be intensified." There will also be harsher penalties for serious crimes such as terror and serious acts of violence and sex offenses. The juvenile justice system will be made tougher, including by increasing maximum sentences.

International security

"The Netherlands will continue to support Ukraine politically, militarily, financially and morally against Russian aggression," the agreement reads. The NATO standard of 2 percent for defense is to be made legally binding. And controversially, there is to be an examination of "when relocation of the embassy to Jerusalem can take place at an appropriate time." Most countries have their embassies in Tel Aviv because of Jerusalem's complex status.

Public finances, economy and business climate

The business climate must be improved, the new coalition believes. And so recent tax increases for entrepreneurs will be partially reversed. This includes an increase in the energy tax. The forming parties have agreed to eventually save 14.7 billion euros per year. The same amount of additional spending (tax relief and investments) will be spent in return. On balance, spending will eventually be reduced by 4.7 billion euros per year.

From the moment I signed with this school, warning signs were glaringly evident, but I was optimistic and brushed them off. However, in hindsight, those warning signals were clear indicators of what was to come. 2. Lack of leadership. 3. Lack of Communication breakdowns 4. Incoherent curriculum 7. Dishonesty and manipulation
--Yup! That sounds like a Hagwon alright.
2. Lack of Leadership ...with those in charge either physically absent or lacking the awareness needed to foster accountability, communication, and organization.
Many times, Korean teachers are found either sitting in a corner of the room on their phones, taking selfies, or shopping, or they're outside the classroom engaging in gossip with the front desk or lunch staff.
--This happens everywhere. The laziness is profound. Search bar: Hagwon Life:The Day They Refused to Pay Me. Floor manager playing games on computer, university students playing on their phones in the break room instead of working, and everything else wrong, broken, incomplete, wrong levels, bratty / undisciplined children, no one cares. Let the foreigners pull their hair out and deal with all the issues, the rest will sit back and do like the prisoners say, "Get over, get by." The answer is, follow them right out the door no matter what the reason is, stay with them until they come back. They leave, you leave.
3. Lack of communication (School Events) Even when management does inform us of an event, it's usually with minimal notice, often just a week or two in advance... (Science Fair) It's frustrating that management only takes action when faced with the threat of embarrassment, leaving teachers to pick up the slack with little support or guidance. (Report cards) The lack of communication extends to the crucial task of writing end-of-year report card comments. Shockingly, this important information was only relayed in the last week of school, not by management, but through hearsay from a veteran teacher.* This last-minute notification left teachers with minimal time to prepare thoughtful and personalized comments for each student.
--The answer is, THEN DON'T DO IT! Why do the foreigners care more than the people who own the place? All you are teaching them when you put in double-overtime, scramble around like crazy, frantically quick-time it to get things done, don't get enough sleep or proper exercise/nutrition, do it for free at home, is that they learn to expect it from you again and again without consequences. They are as bad at education than anyone you will ever encounter on the planet. They have no idea about anything, ESPECIALLY how long it takes to plan and put together a good result. You can ask any one of them, "How long do you THINK it takes to add a worksheet or construct a lesson plan from scratch? And when do you think I will have time to finish it?" As the OP said, they don't do anything until there is a threat of embarrassment. Well then? Embarrass them and keep giving them the same talking points right from the beginning, "I don't have enough time, I don't work at home for free, everyone ignored my request for resources etc." In many cases, they do this out of disrespect to the foreigners, also they don't want to hear foreigners complain or adjust the instructions so they purposely try to run out the clock on them to keep them busy and quiet. A part of it is to see the foreigners stressed and fail. Yeah, really. They want it to fail. Give them what they want and let it collapse. Of course they blame it all on the foreigners, but just repeat your talking points and keep on repeating them. You get off topic, they'll keep jabbering in your face, you stay on topic they'll get frustrated and give up.....eventually.

You wanted to be a teacher? Well then TEACH. Students and everyone else learn a lot from failure. You can talk / complain all day long--ears closed. As soon as there are consequences for failure, leaving the classroom with a room full of naughty children, deadlines are not reached, parents are put off by poor results, management is caught with their pants down--ears open.
Now, do you have the spine inside you to reject punishment? Are you going to reject it and walk out the door, fight back, keep on with your talking points? To SAVE FACE, management will undoubtedly:
a) have a meeting in which they emote all over you, blame you for everything.
b) demand you come to work early/stay late to get said work done, without pay of course.
c) demand you go home and come back with the work completed, without sleep or pay of course.
d) threaten to withhold salary until objective is completed?
e) stink-eyes, sneers, passive-aggressive pouty behavior?
You don't need to throw chairs and getting into a big donnybrook about it (thank you Thesaurus.com). Stick to your talking points, "I'm not doing that, you didn't give us proper notice, there is no time in the day to do it, you aren't paying us overtime or actually anything at all" etc etc.. and if you really need to "Cross the Rubicon" (Thank you Wikipedia), you may have to go full Willy Wonka on their ass:

2024.05.16 02:26 Personal-Bee-1941 Should I Pursue a Lofty Transition at 35?

I'm 35 years old with a 2-year degree in Early Childhood Education. Haven't worked in that field since my early 20s. Currently work in the fitness industry, which I have a love-hate relationship with.
Lately I've found myself telling people "if I could do it all over again, I would've gotten a degree in nursing and worked towards becoming a nurse anesthetist." Had I done that straight out of high school, I'd likely be sitting pretty with a fairly prestigious job title, engaging work, $250k salary, and good work-life balance right now. So it goes.
The thing is... I'm not that old. It's entirely foreseeable that 10 years from now, I'll be telling people "if I were still in my 30s, I'd get a degree in nursing and work towards being a nurse anesthetist." So... should I just do it?
I'm a fairly good student (4.0 GPA with 100+ random college credits), married to the most supportive woman in the world, and my next best option is essentially a hobby job owning and running a small coaching/personal training gym.
The rub is that I'm notorious for starting projects and not finishing them. After aborting a career transition into tech and returning to the fitness industry last year, my wife is (rightfully) concerned about me starting an even longer transition into another career I have no experience in. Charting it out, a full transition would take me about 9 years and cost at least $75k. That's nothing to sneeze at.
What should I do?

2024.05.15 20:58 artemisneurons My (26F) twin brother (26M) is marrying someone (28F) that stresses him so much. I'm so worried for his future, how should he handle this?

Hi everyone, I will try to summarize everything. Thank you all for reading. Could really use the advice.
Let me start by saying I really understand my twin. I know what he likes, dislikes, and everything in between. We're super close, and all I want is for him to be happy. I'd never get in the way of his relationships or stop him from doing what he wants. His happiness means everything to me. I can tell when he's hurting and when he's happy. He goes to me for advice and I tell him my honest opinion. He has every right to do what he wants afterwards. I'm coming on here because I truly think that he regrets his decisions and can't find his freedom anymore.
My brother has been with Lindsey for nearly 8 years. This is his first relationship ever. I don't doubt his love for her but I definitely think it has changed and he is mentally and emotionally suffering as the years gone on. He got engaged to her almost 3 years ago. She gave him an ultimatum that if you don't marry me about X amount of years, I will be breaking up with you. He decided to put a ring on her finger in 2022 and then got accepted to medical school the following year.
She is a full time PA making 6 figures, and my brother is a broke medical student. My parents, my sister, and I found out three weeks ago that she has been planning a wedding since the last year. This wedding is in June. My brother hasn't told anybody - not even his best friend. She is paying for everything, my brother didn't put a dime on the wedding. He hasn't invited anybody and nobody knows about it. Lindsey is under the impression that we knew since last year - my brother lied to her saying we have known since then. She is blaming us, specifically my mom, that we weren't involved in planning. I asked brother why is he hiding a wedding from everybody. Your family and friends should be a part of your wedding. There's something incredibly powerful about pointing at the women in front of you and saying "THIS is the person I want to spend my life with, and I want everyone important to me to witness it". There is something powerful about having people there to witness that vow. It holds you even more accountable to it down the road, and there comes a time in every marriage that the power of that vow is the only thing that holds it together. He said that he doesn't care for weddings and he's doing this because its what she wants. He said he would prefer something small or just keep it as an engagement for now. I asked him are you sure if this is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, and he responded saying "all I know is her". I said do you want to be married right now, but he doesn't really give a solid answer. He says stuff like "sure, why not?" or "it doesn't matter if i get married now". It is super passive, nothing certain. He doesn't seem to care.
We had a heart to heart yesterday. Since October, she has been so frustrated with him. She thinks that ever since he started medical school, he hasn't made her a priority. She thinks he doesn't care about her and ONLY cares about is studying and school. She thinks he's too close to his family and doesn't value her as much. She wants him to do couples therapy. He told me she was actually going to break up with him back in March. But lo and behold, now she's 9 weeks pregnant. Since finding out the news, I have never seen my brother so lifeless. I ended up flying over to him a few days ago (he lives in a different state) just to take care of him. I had a feeling that he needs someone to just be there for him. Yesterday we walked around downtown area and had some ice-cream and he just opened up. He told me that she has always wanted kids and to start a family before 30. I asked if he wants a kid now, he said no. He said he would have to pause medical school and he knows he can't take care of it. He said he's so frustrated because he told her that before they have sex, she can't be ovulating, she has to take an ovulation strip test, and be on the pills. Those were the conditions he gave her, but found out she did none of those things this time. She told him that my cycle is messed up because you cause me stress. He is praying now that she decides to abort but is trying to prepare for both situations. She told him the only way she would abort if he breaks up with her or she breaks up with him. I asked him if this was planned, and he said no. But she is she's so happy about the pregnancy, she told her family and closest friends. As I am visiting him, I just notice he is completely miserable. He is on 20 different medications. Because she is a PA, she prescribes him so much anxiety meds illegally. He also has a severe autoimmune disease. He is shaking, doesn't sleep, doesn't eat. He was sleep talking last night and said "fuck you fuck you fuck you". He told me he is so scared that my mom is going to get sick over this. He is a mess and it hurts me so much because all I want him is to have peace. That's literally all we want for him.
I also feel so bad for her. She is planning a wedding alone. The relationship is built on lies and false beliefs that my brother created just because he doesn't want to loose her and make her happy (they're other stuff I didn't list just to keep the story shorter). In complete honesty, and as a girl myself, I really don't know what she sees in him. She is so pretty, has a great job, works hard, and has money. I feel like she is the whole package. While my brother is so broke, no savings, his body is literally a vessel to academia, and can't prioritize anything besides school right now. I almost feel like she's more in love with getting married and starting a family, than she is with my brother. I think he is her avenue to marriage. I asked my brother if its okay if I share his story to get advise. My sister and I are thinking about talking to her on Friday, and just telling her the truth about. everything. I told him the secret to happiness is freedom. And the secret to freedom is courage. In life, you must take action, if you want to experience freedom. I just don't think he has courage to tell her how he really feels. Would it be bad if we tell her?
If you have gotten this far, thank you so much. I just want him to be happy with himself.
tldr: my twin brother is in relationship that he's no longer happy in and doesn't know how to break free.

Arizona Senate on a Bill to Repeal an 1864 Law Banning Nearly All Abortions

  • This could mean something bad for the adjudicator and the congressperson. Both declined interview demands from The Related Press.
  • The bill passed and after a day, May 2, Vote-based Gov. Katie Hobbs marked it into regulation.
  • Leftists required something like another vote from the option to propel the bill.
At the point when it was Shawnna Bolick’s chance to talk, the words tumbled out of her for 20 minutes. The moderate legislator was in a warm discussion in the conservative Arizona Senate on a bill to revoke an 1864 regulation prohibiting practically all early terminations.
Bolick, head hung low and stumbling over her words, depicted her three troublesome pregnancies, incorporating one that finished in premature delivery. She said she wouldn’t have thought it “without the ethical help of my significant other.”

Arizona Senate to Repeal an 1864 Law Banning Abortions

Her significant other, Arizona High Court Equity Clint Bolick, was important for the greater part that cast a ballot in April to reestablish the close complete boycott.
Onlookers in the display sneered as the representative announced herself as “supportive of life.” Just in the last snapshots of her discourse did her aim become clear?
Shawnna Bolick’s vote to rescind the close complete boycott her life partner restored highlights the undeniably turbulent philosophical and legitimate scene encompassing fetus removal access in Arizona, and it reflects public conservatives’ battle to explore the governmental issues of early termination during an official political race year.
Shawnna and Clint Bolick met in Washington at an occasion facilitated by the Legacy Establishment, a moderate examination foundation. They have for quite some time been companions with U.S. High Court Equity Clarence Thomas — a guardian to one of Clint Bolick’s children — and his moderate political extremist spouse, Ginni.
Clarence Thomas was important for the larger part that toppled Roe v. Swim in 2022 — something he had looked for over 30 years — and he likewise squeezed his associates to turn around decisions safeguarding same-sex marriage, gay sex, and the utilization of contraceptives.

2024.05.15 18:36 Whiitegurl AITA for not lowering the amount of child support payments my child’s father pays?

I got pregnant with a FWB. We used birth control and he chose to opt out of wearing a condom. He knew my stance of not getting an abortion if anything happened and I knew he didn’t want a baby. We were dumb with our decision making & of course I ended up pregnant. After I got pregnant, we stayed in touch a bit and still went on a trip we had previously scheduled before I got pregnant. (He easily could have canceled, as the reservations were in his name + he told me I didn’t need to contribute to the cost)
About halfway into the pregnancy I offered him to sign his rights away. He didn’t want to commit to that. We started working on creating an agreement but it would always end in fighting (him saying he didn’t want this).
He did not come to the birth + adamant about being off of the birth certificate. After the baby was born he visited twice (he lives in another state) + voluntarily started sending $500/m (I never asked but was appreciative). I was adamant about getting this in writing so there is accountability. He was always “busy” or would start a fight so that way we ended the conversation (telling me this is my decision to have the baby and he didn’t want it). I offered we could meet with an attorney and split legal fees. Again he would procrastinate. Eventually, I was fed up and gave him a deadline before I would take Matters to my own hands. When I got an attorney, that burned the bridge with him. he no longer checked on our baby And became hostile. so we really haven’t talked in over four months and he hasn’t seen the baby in over six months
I just received the proposed agreement that was made by my attorney. I know he’s going to be livid when he sees the child support worksheet recommended $1300/m. I know he didn’t want the baby, but he also made the decision to be involved in the beginning. Now that I went to the attorney he no longer wants to be involved.
Am I the asshole for holding him accountable since ultimately he decided to be involved and keep the recommended amount or should I advocate to stick to what we have been doing, $500/m. My friends all think I’m dumb for even thinking about lowering his amount but it would be nice to have some unbiased opinions before moving forward. Maybe I am dumb. You can tell me that my feelings won’t get hurt lol.
Edit to add more details:
I went through an attorney which means we had to do a paternity test and he had to fill out a discovery questionnaire. This was filed through the courts. He got an attorney after he was served a paternity test order. This is my attorney’s attempt at an out of course settlement. I am not familiar with the legal terminology.
Also, I don’t “need” the money. I have a college education, a good paying job, and stable life. This isn’t a debate whether or not I should have given the baby up for adoption or had premarital sex.
2nd edit: thank you for the suggestions and input (both positive & negative). I will reply back to my lawyer to move forward with the proposed amount. The extra that I don’t currently need will be put towards a 529 plan and another high interest savings account that I can use for the child in the future. (Private school tuition, First Car, down payment for her first house, etc.)

2024.05.15 15:44 Saspurillah Non-religious talking to a Catholic Professor about his faith.

Hi all,
First, this is a long post, and for that I apologize. I have a lot on my mind I’m trying to process right now. I’m also a creative writing minor, so I realize this will come across as a story.
I attend a fairly conservative college where most of the students being Christian. I myself am not religious, and due to the environment I try to keep that fact to myself so as not to be rude or disruptive. Some people do know about my lack of belief, and I’ve had mixed responses from them when they learn. Some want to convert me, others are rather nonchalant about it.
The reason I am writing is because I recently had a conversation with one of my literature professors that has left me wondering how I should respond. The conversation started after I asked him a follow up question to something he mentioned about the Bible: “That it’s the greatest story about the human condition humanity ever told.” For context, he’s been a Catholic his entire life.
My follow up question to him after class was this: “But if it’s just a story, why should we believe it, especially when there seem to be so many contradictions within it?” This tends to be my first question when someone makes a claim about the Bible, and it is born partly out of curiosity (I genuinely want to know why, as no Christian I’ve talked with has given me a good answer to it) and partly as a challenge, as I don’t want to see him wasting his life worshipping something that isn’t true. Perhaps this is not the best motivation, but it is what sparked my question.
He didn’t answer right away, but when he did this is (roughly) what he said: “My favorite story is William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury. I think it, while being fictitious, presents a deep understanding of human nature. I read it to understand the characters, and, by understanding them, hopefully learn a little bit more about myself and others in the process. Does it matter if it is true? Depends on what you mean by true. If you mean it in the sense of “this actually happened,” then you will be disappointed by a lot of literature. But if you mean it as “this reveals an important quality of human condition,” then I think it is very true.” He then chuckled and added, “Your question reminds me of a quote one of my professors told me when I was a student: ‘Everything in the Bible is true; some of it actually happened.”
This surprised me, as this is the first time I had really talked with someone who didn’t take the Bible (specifically the creation story) literally. I clarified with him to make sure I understood him correctly, and he affirmed what I said.
I probed him a bit more about that, asking if the fact that it was written by humans makes it less trustworthy. Why should we place so much faith in something that was written by mere men? I figured he would say something like “God wrote the Bible,” as that is what people I know have said.
He paused again and thought. His eventual response was this (if I recall correctly): “I have two reasons for why I believe in the Bible, one reason for believing in God, and one additional reason for why I am Catholic. The first reason for why I believe in the word of the Bible is because I think it is written by God. Unfortunately, that isn’t the most convincing reason even for myself, as why should I believe it is written by God? This leads to my second reason, which is that I simply find the story of the Bible presents to be the most beautiful and brilliant work to ever exist. I have spent years studying the intricacies of the Bible simply because I find its underlying themes and its story of human failure and promise for redemption to be gripping and compelling. Shakespeare doesn’t even come close, in my opinion. If it’s not written by God with human hands, then I don’t know what is. But this still is built upon believing that God exists, so let’s go to why I think that.
"The way I see it, faith is a natural part of human life. It is impossible to find a functional person who doesn’t trust something, and trust is one of the pillars of faith, so similar in fact that I view it as faith. If everything in the world is man-made and artificial, without divine influence, I think at the very least I would still choose to believe in the word of the Bible because I find it the most beautiful thing in the world. A large part of the reason I believe in God is because I think it is natural to have faith in something. If I am going to have faith in something no matter what, I want my faith to be in something beautiful, intellectually rigorous, and good for humanity.
“This leads into my reason for being Catholic, which is in large part it is because I think it presents the most holistic, beautiful, and practical theory for human success. Everything it teaches is geared toward human success, both individually and socially. People might disagree with what the Catholic Church defines as “human success,” but I think the Catholic Church is onto something.”
I asked him to elaborate, and he explained how the Catholic Church (if I understand correctly) places great emphasis on God’s first two commands to Adam and Eve: “Be fruitful and multiply.” “Multiply,” he explains, “sounds like what it says: make more humans.” This is not to say every male and female should hook up, but rather that we as a society should be concerned about the “continuation of our species.”
This command is to be taken hand in hand with the next one: “Be fruitful.” Making lots of babies isn’t the point--the point is to make lots of “good” humans. What does he mean by ‘good?’ “That,” he shrugs, “is where a lot of people disagree. I myself am not entirely sure how to describe ‘good’ humans, but I’ll try. I could say ‘love’ is the measure of a 'good' human, but even there people disagree with what ‘love’ is. I think love, however, is fundamentally about willing the best for the other, to the point of being willing to lay down your life for that person. An enduring society that produces those types of people is one that I would say is a good society, and I think people who take the ideals of Catholicism seriously and live them out as intended are the most likely to do that.”
I asked him about the abuse that the LGBTQ community has had to endure at the hands of Christians, and how the Catholic Church does not recognize same-sex marriage and calls those people sinners. I also asked about how denying abortion access to women is loving to them. He winces at this, and says this in reply: “A lot of people say and do terrible things in the name of Jesus and 'love.' The Catholic Church’s official teachings do not say we should be cruel to LGBTQ members or to women who have had or want an abortion. Unfortunately, people are people and people are often hypocrites, many without realizing it. When it comes to the LGBTQ community, the Catholic Church does not say ‘being homosexual is a sin,’ it says that homosexuality is a disordered desire. The ‘sin’ comes from acting on that desire, as the Catholic Church holds that all sexual acts should be reserved for the opposite sex as a unitive and potentially procreative act within the security of monogamous marriage between a man and a woman. This goes back to “be fruitful and multiply:” Sex is so very pleasurable because it is extremely important for reproduction, which is what all life, in general, tries to do. Since the sexual act has been shown scientifically to significantly rewire the human brain, shouldn’t we try to be as careful as we possibly can be with it and make sure it is used for its intended purpose: to make babies? That is part of the Church’s practical reasoning for why homosexual acts (and extramarital and non-unitive sex) are not to be encouraged or endorsed by the Catholic Church.
"Many Christians, unfortunately, forget the lessons of the Gospel stories of the woman about to stoned and the woman at the well: those two woman were isolated and outcast from their homes for their sexual acts; one of them was about to be killed it. What happens to these women is intended to be viewed as unloving. Jesus, however, befriends them despite them ‘objectively’ sinning. He never endorsed their behavior, but he still treated them with respect and love. Even if people today might argue those women did nothing wrong, the point of those stories is that Jesus considered them ‘sinners’ and yet he loved and befriended them anyway. That is literally what Jesus was doing in every city he went to: Spending time with the people who were considered terrible sinners, not because he agreed with their actions but because they are human and thus deserve to be loved. I think Christians today too often forget that is the core message of the Jesus' teachings: to love one another.
“As for abortion, the Catholic Church’s position on that rests upon our emphasis on the inherent dignity of human life. The Catholic Church believes human life begins at conception. Operating under that view, abortion is murder and should thus be strongly discouraged and/or condemned. Personally, I think it should still remain a decision between a woman and her doctor, as the doctor is the only one with the medical expertise necessary to accurately say when an abortion is actually necessary to save the woman’s life. That, however, is a tragedy, and it is one the Catholic Church acknowledges is an unfortunate situation of ‘abortion is necessary to save a life that would be otherwise lost.’ Doctors need the confidence and ability to make difficult decisions without fear of being punished for it. That means there is a risk of abuse and malpractice, but that is the nature of trust.”
We were running out of time before he had to get to his next class, so I asked him one last question that was on my mind: “Can the existence of God be proved?”
He chuckled at this. “Some of my colleagues will likely disagree with me on this, but I personally don’t put a lot of stock in ‘proofs for God.’ I haven’t found one that convinces me, and I believe in God. I think they do a good job of suggesting God exists, but proving He exists? I don’t think so. I don’t think it’s possible to prove God’s existence to someone who doesn’t already believe in God. I think the most we can do is show is why belief in God is not illogical—that’s the role of apologetics. But I can’t say, with absolute certainty, that I am right. That’s part of why it is faith: We might be wrong. If we are wrong, then ‘we are of all people the most pitiable.’” (I had to look this up afterward, as he made it sound like a quote. He was quoting Paul’s letter (1 Cor:15-19) talking about what it means if Christians are wrong about their faith. It seems he was applying this quote to all people of faith who are wrong.)
He gave me an example of what he means by ‘impossible to prove:’ “Think of your paper for this class. You, hopefully, are writing about something that you think is true. You are speculating at what the author meant, at how the author thought, why the author wrote the book or scene the way he or she did, or any works or events that likely influenced the work you are studying. Can you know for certain that you are correct?”
My answer: “No. But I can find evidence for it that shows I probably am.”
His reply: “Exactly. It is the same way with God. I don’t think we can prove God definitely exists the same way you can’t prove, with 100% confidence, that your paper’s thesis is correct. I think there is a lot of evidence that suggests God does exist, but I can’t prove it. Belief in God is inductive, and therefore inherently uncertain. This is how the Catholic Church also understands “Natural Law” and “Moral Law.” We can’t really prove either of them exist, we just have a lot of evidence gathered from observing the world and humanity that we think strongly suggests a natural and moral law. Apologists are the ones in charge of showing how our teachings and beliefs on these subjects are not inconsistent and intellectually bankrupt to hold.
“One last thing, to explain what I mean by ‘lots of evidence for God’s existence.’ Imagine we were to find Van Gogh’s The Starry Night out in the woods. I can’t prove that someone painted it, but I think a strong case can be made that someone did paint it. I might go so far as to argue it is obvious. That’s how I tend to view the world and the universe: one giant painting made by God by means of scientific laws and evolution.”
At this point he had to leave for his next class. He thanked me for the conversation and asked if I was still able to make it to cigars this Friday to celebrate the end of the term. I told him yes, and that I will probably have more questions and that I hope he didn’t mind if I asked him. He said he did not mind.
So that leads me to here: I have never had a conversation with a person of faith like this before. Almost every response he had appealed to an intuition that he seemed fine with not everyone sharing. He's also the first Christian I've met who says he doesn't think God can be proved and doesn't seem bothered by that. I suppose my question for you is: What should I ask him? What should he clarify?

2024.05.15 15:24 emjadra App or website to remove handwriting from worksheet?

Anyone know of an app or website that I can scan lesson plans or worksheets I forget to make a copy of a blank one. I keep forgetting to make more copies of an empty blank one so when I pass them out to students and forget to always keep a blank one to use for copies. I teach middle school and 8 different classes of students. It gets hectic and the computers are slow compared to the office scanner.

2024.05.15 10:15 Global-Fan2205 Boxplot command doesn't work for some students in a GeoGebra lesson

Using GeoGebra Suite, I importerd a csv-file and shared my worksheet with my students in a GeoGebra lesson. Some students at first didn't see the imported data. Also, the Boxplot-command is not recognized for them.
Opening Suite outside the lesson, in the same browser, the Boxplot command is working.
The students are using Windows 10, Google Chrome version 124.0.0.0 (same as the other students where no problems occurred).
Anyone any ideas or things I could troubleshoot?

2024.05.15 10:02 Pure_Lie3116 Need Advice for Online Access

I am an 18 yr old broke college student who just found out shes pregnant. My parents have money but I under no circumstances can go to them for help with this. As I am about 5 weeks pregnant, I will be able to order pills online, but most providers are very expensive (around/at least 200 dollars) and the ones that are less expensive (still steep at 150 dollars) I’m worried are a scam. In addition to this, I have an obgyn appointment where my mom will be in the room on june 25 and im worried that even if I end the pregnancy now, there will be signs of it still when I have my obgyn appointment and my mom will find out. I’m also getting bloodwork done at that appointment to test for a hormone imbalance and am worried that that will reveal something or that getting the abortion will screw up my chances of finding out if I have a hormone imbalance. Overall I just need advice, I’m really freaking out. I know I don’t have the funds for this so idk what to do.

2024.05.15 05:20 Additional_Bobcat_87 Any tips for a student wanting to plan early

I want to apply to top schools but I’m curious would these stats get me in? My counselor last year had a talk with me and said I had no chance for dropping a math course because of medical reasons at the time and a lot of work (that class ended up being dropped due to complains of several students). She told me after a year though that I might have a chance. this year I’m working hard in making a difference but I’m rlly unsure due to the competitive top 20 class, they have limited and almost no ecs but still. If anyone does reply I would like to get some tips Ofcourse no one knows what exactly gets anyone in but any suggestions for ecs and what to improve?
For context my school is very low income and it does reflect in the education and state tests
Taking all IB senior year + top 5% of my class, 3.98 gpa/4.0
Also: Every Stanford student from my school majors into law or engineering never Econ or finance I’m considering Econ + poli sci
Sat planning on getting more than a 1400 gonna grind all summer possibly getting a tutor to get a 1500+
Ecs: Business club president + deca president for this fall, made a project website for 1000+ students and the college and career center to gain access to resources related to business and scholarships in general
Women in corporate related Organization co founder- making resources accessible, one one one help creating a college profile and ecs, tips for classes and more and more than 500+ ppl

2024.05.15 04:40 jsungs potentially controversial extracurriculars

hii i was wondering if activities that mightt possibly be controversial (ex. abortion advocacy, contraceptive accessibility, menstrual product access for the incarcerated) due to some stigma surrounding conversations around these topics may hurt me in the transfer process as a premed student ? i feel like it definitely depends on which schools i apply to, but i think i just need some reassurance or something haha.. because these things are definitely something i'm passionate about, but i can't deny there are probably people who feel strongly opposed what i'm for

2024.05.15 03:08 crystallisednuke Just took Misoprostol and Mifepristone about 12 hours ago but still little/to no bleeding. Help.

Just for context, I should be roughly 13 weeks and 3 days (February)- counting from the first day of my last period (however, I did not see my partner until early March, just a bit before my period was supposed to start). I am in a country where abortion is illegal. It’s been really hard and I tried my best to find support locally.
Anyways, it is currently 9 am (my time- by the time I have posted this). I took 8 Misoprostol and 8 Mifepristone, last night at 9pm (2100). I experienced extreme cramping, chills, and loose stool, until about 6 am today. It’s been hours later and I only have mild cramping now and only a tiny bit of clot came out earlier. I don’t know what else to do at this point. There was another person that also took their meds in the local support group chat I joined, but they successfully got through their abortion a while ago at 5 am, and I haven’t yet. I am completely disheartened. It took quite a lot of money and time to save up to buy from said local support group (I am still a student).
I cannot support another life. What do I do? Getting another dose is going to be so hard. How can I get mine to be successful too? I followed all the steps given to me but I haven’t bled as much as I supposedly should be nor am I passing clots. I am so lost. I would rather be in pain physically and get through this than have the stress and worry about my abortion not succeeding.
