Bonus exercise: Radical acceptance

All major recovery frameworks incorporate some form of “acceptance” as a significant component of their programs. In the 12 steps, it’s embedded in the Serenity Prayer (the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, the wisdom to know the difference). In SMART Recovery it’s conceived as “Unconditional Self, Life and Other Acceptance”. In dialectical behaviour therapy (which is what is used in many ED treatment programs), it’s called “radical acceptance”.
These are all basically different expressions of the same concept, i.e. not letting things that we can’t control take over our moods and derail us from our recoveries.
On Tuesday of this week we made a list of things that are not in our control. Those things include the past, our current circumstances, and other people’s behaviour. Today will be a brief summary of radical acceptance, with apologies in advance to anyone who’s more educated about this than me, I hope to not completely butcher the topic! 🙂
Radical acceptance IS:

• a neutral acknowledgment of the reality of a situation that is either temporarily or permanently unchangeable
• an acceptance that life is imperfect, we are imperfect, others are imperfect
• a shift in focus from what we cannot control (the situation) to what we can control (our response)
• a way to seek peace and reduce suffering even in the face of real or perceived adversity
• a belief that life is worth living even though it is imperfect and there is pain and disappointment sometimes

Radical acceptance is NOT:

• approval or “liking” a situation
• “giving up” or the absence of a desire for change
  • quite the opposite, in fact accepting reality is often the first step to change
• appropriate for every situation
  • if someone is in danger or being abused, that is not a time for acceptance!
• going to eliminate grief, sadness or pain
  • grief and sadness are normal and inevitable human emotions
  • some things are going to be very painful no matter how much acceptance we bring to the situation, for example death, abuse, serious illness or injury
  • radical acceptance can however lessen feelings of frustration, resentment, bitterness and unhappiness

Signs that we’re not accepting a reality:

• Use of phrases like “why me”, “it shouldn’t be this way”, “I wish it was different”, “it’s not fair”
• Needing to numb to escape a reality
• Labeling people or situations as good or bad, right or wrong

In the context of an eating disorder, the obvious thing that many of us struggle to accept is our current body size! And yet as we have all experienced, that constant internal struggle with body acceptance and trying to force ourselves into smaller bodies as soon as possible quite often keeps us trapped in a binge cycle.
Body size is not however the only area in which acceptance can affect our recoveries. Other things we might need to accept in recovery could include: how much work it might take to achieve recovery from our eating disorders / how long that process might take, other people’s inability to understand our struggles or be supportive, an inability to completely control our environments, the fact that recovery will have ups and downs and there may be symptoms along the way, and the discomfort we may experience when learning new coping mechanisms and letting go of old ones. And I’m sure there are many other examples!!
Why does this matter? When we spend our mental energy resisting or fighting against things we cannot control or change, we create emotional suffering for ourselves that we then often turn to our unhealthy coping mechanisms to soothe, and we potentially rob ourselves of the opportunity to focus on what we have and what is actually available to us, and to make progress where possible!
I try not to put my own personal experiences into the posts but I have a recent personal example of what a difference acceptance made in my own life recently, so I’ll share that in my check in! 😀
Tips for Practicing Radical Acceptance

• Think of a reality that you are fighting against (“this shouldn’t be happening”)
• Acknowledge the reality (“this has happened”)
• Remind yourself that you are not in control of changing it right now
• Think about what your behaviour would look like if you did accept the facts
• Try a body scan to see what feelings and sensations that evokes
• Embrace any feelings of sadness or grief
• Acknowledge that life has meaning and is worth living even when there is some pain

  If you want me gone from your house, and life (and possibly my own life, given the extreme existential risk posed by homelessness for a vulnerable person with the significant disabilities I am faced with), then you will have to have me physically removed from your house in cold blood, and until the day you (or I, depending on the order) die you will live with that being the last time you ever saw the son that you took for granted and abused for 32 fucking years while he groveled at your feet begging for even scraps of affection or humanity from the person who constantly love-bombed and discarded him at her convenience to serve her own narcissistic desires worth no regard for the whole entire person she was subjugating to the role of, barely, a pet.
  

 

• Be aware that if you choose to remove me from your life as a pathological and assuredly-ineffective avoidance mechanism to try and preemptively shield yourself from the fear of abandonment that is triggered in you as a result of my overwhelmingly valid and necessary actions to demand that you cease your lifelong efforts to subjugate me in your self-created hierarchical position at the top of our unequal relationship, then you will be doing yourself an irreparable disservice by extinguishing whatever sliver of opportunity might remain for you to get the help you need to allow you to finally see me as a real person and begin making real decisions and changes and efforts to participate in efforts to salvage whatever scraps of hope might remain for us to have a relationship before both/either of us die.

 

• Feel free to ignore and/or conceal the tens of thousands of words of documented history in order to share contextless excerpts of this text within your self-serving echo chambers in your efforts to receive false validation of your delusional victimhood. Or, alternatively, feel free to vulnerably share this in its entirety - along with the full corpus of my messaging regarding the severity of the harms caused by your behaviours - with a competent and knowledgeable mental health professional(s) for the purposes of seeking treatment for your underlying pathologies and working towards genuine growth.

 

• In the unlikely (though incomprehensibly-or-perhaps-delusionally-still-hopeful) event that you are still reading, I will conclude by saying that the possibility for any hope of salvaging our relationship lies firmly and solely within your control.

 

• After over 8 years of significant, relentless, documented, often-vilified, and absolutely unreciprocated efforts to single-handedly to put 100% of the effort into a relationship that you reaped the benefits of while remaining unwavering in your abdication of even the slightest of responsibilities, I have run out of ways, means, ideas, and capacity to continue unsuccessfully trying to do both of our parts.

 

• I am not closing the door to the possibility of reconciliation if/once you have undertaken the extensive individual work you need to do if you are ever going to be able and willing to put the necessary effort into repairing our relationship. But neither am I continuing to continue working outside your closed door hoping that one day I might be able to do enough to influence you to treat me like a full, real, EQUAL, human being.
