2024.05.19 05:34 picking_a_moondog Considering transitioning away from Oxygen

I know I’m not the first to ask this, but I wanted to see what the WP Community’s May 2024 opinion on this is. I’ve been using Oxygen to build sites since I started my agency a few years back and have loved it. Creating design sets to duplicate from site to site is easy, integrates well enough with ACF (a NEEDED component other template builders like Beaver don’t really excel at), setting global styles is easy, has solid developer controls, etc.
However I’ve been increasingly more and more discouraged by how little time and effort the Soflyy devs have been putting into Oxygen since the launch of Breakdance. Updates are slow and it seems to be more of just legacy support at this point. That’s fine for the existing sites I have, but going forward, I find it hard to justify confusing using it.
Enter Bricks.
I’ve been playing around with it for the past few days and have found it to be fairly comparable to Oxygen’s UI. It also integrates well with ACF and has far more frequent updates and DEV involvement. I’m still trying to get a feel for how design sets work but other than that I’m just about sold.
Fellow Oxygen users in 2024, is switching to Bricks still the move? Or are you sticking with Oxygen and, if so, why?

2024.05.10 11:21 Common-Deer-6619 ACF/PACF chart in Eviews

Hello, everyone. I would like to know how to visualize a graph of ACF/PACF and get chart of them separately in Eviews. If you know a command or know the path how to do this, please let me know. There is no information about it in the internet and I cannot save a file and use it in another software since it is a student version of EViews. Thank you.

Hello, everyone. Could you please tell me is it ok to have such huge lag in my data?
The data is stationary, I analyze the log returns of cryprocurrency, what can be the problem? And should I run arima returns, ar(39) ma(39) in Stata in this case or what can I do in this case? Thank you.

2024.04.30 18:53 Crafty_Ad2311 Too many significant ACFs

Hi guys, got a fairly simple issue here. I am attempting to produce an ACF and PACF in order to get a suitable ARMA model. The data had a trend, however I differenced it. 35 of my ACFs are significant, while 3 of my PACFs are significant, giving me an ARMA (35,3). The ARIMA functions gives me (2,0,1). Clearly, there is a major contradiction. To me something seems wrong. Can you tell me if this is possible/likely and if not, could you suggest any of the main areas I may have gone wrong. Feel free to ask any questions to get any more info. Thanks for reading.

2024.04.26 05:38 Special_Truck_5187 inter-school switching and breaking stereotypes at LUMS

At the top universities in the world like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and other Ivy League schools and top 200 US universities, students are afforded the luxury of gaining basic knowledge in multiple subjects and taking free electives. In the first year, students have the chance to study multiple disciplines and are not required to declare their major before the end of their first or sophomore year. For example, if one begins with CS but later realizes a passion for Econ or ACF which they have not studied before, isn't that amazing? Rather than being stuck with a major that one may not enjoy for the entirety of their degree, without ever getting the chance to study multiple disciplines, students can take advantage of this opportunity. This luxury is a feature that many students love and is inspired by other top US universities. It is what makes LUMS unique and distinct from other Pakistani universities.
and furthermore, you can very easily which major after meeting certain criteria, switching in the same school is easy, switching to a different school is a little bit harder like if you want to switch into SDSB you need to follow a certain criterion that i"ll quote from the LUMS website. What is the process for transferring into SDSB from another school? a CGPA greater than or equal to 3.5 at the end of First/Sophomore year(s) are eligible for a direct transfer to SDSB Undergraduate Programmes (ACF/MGS), based on their given major preference.
( you can visit their website or ask them directly for detailed guidance)
secondly, switching to SSE is relatively harder since you need to take courses in algebra and calculus ( which can be particularly challenging for students without a background in mathematics or STEM fields) and maintain a certain high GPA to meet the requirements for switching.
Thirdly, I highly recommend not solely relying on uninformed comments when it comes to making decisions about your future as a potential student. The lack of knowledge in some comments can significantly impact your choices. Instead, utilize authentic mediums like their official website for accurate guidance. Additionally, feel free to directly reach out to them; they are excellent at responding to queries. It's crucial to avoid being swayed by stereotypical or misguided remarks from individuals who may not have all the facts. Trusting reliable sources will ensure you make informed decisions for your own benefit
And lastly, I think that having the option to switch majors is a luxury. If a student couldn't qualify for a certain major initially, they could work towards a minimum GPA and then switch to that major. Similarly, if someone who was initially interested in a particular major realizes later on that it's not for them, they could switch to something they are truly passionate about.
I hope you all make it to the LUMS IA.

2024.04.23 00:59 avb0101 Time Series Model Selection

Hi everyone!
I'm pretty new to time series and I'm trying to determine what model would be a good option before actually trying any. I've included a decision flow chart from the book I'm reading that I'm using to determine this.
The data I have is 3+ years of daily visits. Sampling the data at 3, 2 and 1 years all return and ADF p-value well under 0.05 indicating from what I understand, to be a stationary series. In the ACF plot it appears the coefficients become non-significant around lag 55 which would indicate an MA process. Does this seem like too many lags to consider?
Similarly, the PACF also has an abrupt change around lag 30. Again would these be too many lags to consider?
If both the ACF and PACF don't have any lags that become abruptly non-significant and neither an AR or MA model would work, what should I use?
In addition, if I apply an ADF test to different ranges (1 year, 8 months, 6 months, etc.) the p-values bounce around from under 0.05 to 2.0. Would it be better to reduce the duration for training?

2024.04.20 08:26 PusheenHater I literally can't bring myself to play Wild Arms: Alter Code F

I played Wild Arms 2 decades ago as a kid and I loved it. I totally want to re-play it but I wanted to start with Alter Code F first. Prior, I've only played WA2, no other games from the series.
So I started Alter Code F and I'm currently at the part where the blonde stole 5k gella from me. It's not far into the game but it's been a slog getting this far. I'm not having fun.
Here are my thoughts so far:
I'm looking at longplay videos and it doesn't look like it gets better. Does it get better?

2024.04.01 16:29 oblivijan Am I charging enough for this task?

Hello everyone.
So I see a lot of these types of posts on here and thought I ask for myself. I know I don't charge the going rate for my work, I get it, but it works out for me with available time and type of work required so that's fine. But the client is arguing hard on price for a new feature he needs on a pre-existing site.
I won't give out the site but it is wordpress running the 'motors' theme. The company sells used cars.
So basically they want a page with a table which shows all car details and costs so they can see each vehicles profitability. Nothing too crazy and I even suggested they could just use an excel sheet because, why do they need that in the website backend. The request also came to "keep the price down". Great!
And now, feature creep of course... he wants the page to now automatically populate when cars are added as new listings. Then he wants all data, costs etc to also update via the listing page for each vehicle. So ACF plus custom code to grab the meta on new listing or update. Ok. Then he wants JS sorting and filtering by month and sold/unsold.
I can do it all but do I really want to do this for just $250?? What quote should I realistically go back to him with?
Thank you

2024.03.29 21:16 GhosuAUT Mars 4 Ultra or Mars 4 Max

UPATE: Ah, i just ordered a Saturn 3, price of 300€ was too tempting. Tbh. when i get a printer now, i want it to have some features, that MIGHT (!) be of interest later. Bigger print volume and higher pixel density (yeah, i know that the difference is not THAT big) are the biggest factors i could imagine atm. I'm handling it similar with my camera gear...i can handle/fix most things (i repaired all my cars myself and fixing/modding my Neptune 4 all the time) so i should be able to maintain that printer. The only downside for me is the bigger form factor...but i'll sort that out and make up some free space. Thx
Hi,
i'm new to resin printing, using a FDM printer now for a few months (Neptune 4). Since i like that new hobby, i just want to play around with resin a bit. Not sure, if i'll invest much time, so for the beginning my max budget is 300€, planning to print some minis and small busts (bigger printroom is nice to have IF the day comes i need it). With the eastern sale going atm, i narrowed it down to:
Mars 4 Ultra: Might have to replace the ACF sheet since I'm more interested in quality>speed. Build quality and WiFi are nice to have, the (maybe?) better build plate leveling mechanism with 4 bolts as well. I want a compact machines, so that fits as well, small printroom might be good enough. PFA sheets would cost me extra, in the end it's around 270€ for that package.
The normal Mars 4 was an option as well, cheaper, no need to replace the film, loose some nice to have features, though that "bug" doesn't sound that nice https://www.reddit.com/resinprinting/comments/18tiwzg/update_elegoo_mars_4_replaced_by_mars_4_ultra_aa/
Mars 4 Max: Similar small form factor, more printroom, no nice to have features...only 220€, but 35 µm compared to Mars 4 18 µm...anyone ever compared prints side by side in real life or owns both machines? Seems most people say, the difference is barely visible for the human eye. That seems to be the only real downside, but i could imagine you don't recognize the difference THAT much. But ofc it's nice to have. Not sure, if the max got the same AA bug since it's using USB stick as well.
Tbh it's hard to decide cause of the µm-difference. I could imagine, it's not THAT important, people printing excellent models with bigger "pixels"...and the max is cheaper, bigger printroom and similar form factor...no nice to have features ofc. Any input on that? Or ideas, personal experience comparing both? Hard choice for me atm.
Thanks and greetings
PS: I could pick the Saturn 3 on the other hand, mostly best features of both worlds...19x24µm, plenty printroom, but i really dislike the bigger form factor - So atm (!) i rule that option out.

2024.03.29 17:49 epicukulele Reclaiming the Voice: Jonathan Schlatt in AI and in Music

One of the developments that we’ve seen in music is the development of AI tools that are able to generate realistic sounding vocals that can sound like various people. Sometimes, these “AI covers” use the generated voices of artists, living or dead. Other times, these covers use the voices of fictional or real world personalities that are not known for making music. However, in our research, we stumbled upon an interesting set of cases, “what if the voices that were being generated came from people who are assumed to be unwilling or unable to make music?” In this paper, we will analyze the vocal qualities and compare an AI generated cover of Frank Sinatra’s version of My Way that uses the voice of content creator and internet personality, jschlatt, to the actual jschlatt’s cover of the same song. In this account of a Youtuber making music, we define who a music maker is, and touch on subjects of Autonomy and AI music production. This paper explores the possibilities of AI music production as means for the recontextualization of the voices of the late great singers as an advantage offered by state-of-the art technology.
Jonathan Schlatt is an American YouTuber and Twitch streamer, popularly known as jschlatt or simply, Schlatt. He was born on September 10th, 1999. Though he has mentioned that he played the cello in his childhood, as far as can be seen he does not perform music for any of his content, though he has been heard casually singing to himself in some of his videos. At the very least, the response to his cover of My Way was met with widespread surprise, cementing the fact that his ability to sing was, till that moment, not widely known.
In this research, we will compare and contrast the qualities of the AI generated voice of jschlatt in the cover of the song My Way by Frank Sinatra and the song cover uploaded by jschlatt himself using his real voice singing the same song. The said cover was uploaded on December 15, 2023 and has garnered amused comments from his followers. In the words of James Kirk in his article, jschlatt’s cover of My Way was produced in his channel as a response to the audience mocking his musical capabilities. Kirk even entitled his article, “AI favorite Jschlatt just released a genuine cover of ‘My Way’ and it’s glorious: He faced it all and he stood tall.” This shows that there has been some discussion about these two covers. Some have even concluded that the official cover was far better than the AI one.
There are many so-called “AI covers” that may be found on the internet. In the article of Bloomberg, a TikTok user named Ghostwriter977 wrote a song and used AI generated vocals from artists Drake and the Weeknd in said song. This was an article that took a strong stance in stating that the act of using the vocals of existing and active artists in said record amounted to theft. In this case, the person who generated the AI content was using the voice of existing and active artists in their own song. There are other examples wherein the voice that was being generated belonged to artists who were no longer active. A content creator who goes by the handle “There, I Ruined It” has, among other things, used AI tools in order to have deceased artists sound like they are singing modern songs. Among such examples we have Hank Williams, notable country singer who was active from around the 30s to the 50s, singing Still D.R.E by famed rapper Dr. Dre. “There I Ruined It” also used AI to generate vocals of Louis Armstrong singing the song Low (better known as Apple Bottom Jeans) to the tune of When The Saints Go Marching In. Besides this, the voices of fictional characters who do not normally sing have also been generated. Plankton from Spongebob has been generated singing Beggin’ by Måneskin. The Villager character from the game Minecraft has been generated singing Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. And finally, people known for endeavors outside of music have also been generated singing. From American Presidents to actors to internet personalities. And it is one such internet personality that we will be talking about today.
Now, one can only speculate on why people have chosen to use these voices. For some, it is clearly meant to be farcical. However, considering that there are covers on which there are many comments that believe these songs “actually sound good” it is not a stretch to consider that some may actually like these voices for their quality. Erego, for some, a particular person’s voice may be used for its timbre, thus making it an instrument of sorts. On December 16, 2023, schlatt posted a video titled, possibly in exaggeration, “AI song covers NEED to stop.” In it, he shares his opinions on AI covers. He questions why people have decided to use this technology in the way that they have. He also admits that some of the covers, even of his own voice, are really “good.” He then asks an interesting question. “Did this stem from, like, you didn’t think I could do it?”
The difference is clear from the first lines. Note how Schlatt allows his voice to fall off slightly at “the end is near,” a nuance that you do not hear from the AI cover. The intonation of the AI cover is also slightly off. Furthermore, note the usage of vibrato with the AI cover, it is often a perfectly regular, perfectly spaced vibrato exactly at the end of phrases. Schlatt himself uses vibrato a bit more strategically. Furthermore, the AI cover sounds quite plain. Though one can observe some differences in dynamics, the choices of where the dynamics were quite different on sounded dull and weak as compared to the original cover of Schlatt which has an affective appeal on its end. On the high notes, the notes do not have the usual effort that one would make when singing in their upper register. Unlike in Schlatt’s cover, we could hear the effort, the slight tension, and almost grit in his voice as he sang the higher notes of the song. Moreover, the nuances in dynamics are more contextual and reasonable compared to the AI which sounds more artificial. At the climax of the song in the AI cover, the highest note did not sound like jschlatt, but it seemed rounder. A side-by-side comparison of the AI cover with Frank Sinatra’s original rendition reveals the source of these inconsistencies. It appears that someone took the vocal performance of Frank Sinatra exactly as it appears in the recording, and generated Schlatt’s voice using Frank Sinatra’s voice. Therefore, not only had Schlatt’s voice been taken, but the person who created the cover attempted to contextualize a person’s actual performance and copy it exactly, with a different person’s voice. This can explain many of the inconsistencies that you can observe. The voice of Schlatt does not exactly fit with the inflections of Sinatra, as Schlatt is not Sinatra. All in all, the human cover simply sounds more human. And according to many commenters, it sounds much better than the AI cover.
With all of these apparent and intentional musical choices appearing in his official cover, Jschlatt manifested his pride, excellence, and musical capability In the way he sang My Way, jschlatt implied that he could sing far better than his artificial voice. The music in his cover showed that jschlatt is a man of confidence and self-esteem. He showed how this AI that took his voice was inauthentic, simplistic and inaccurate to how he would actually act as a “music maker”.
Music makers are individuals and groups, adults and children, female and male, amateurs and professionals. There are people who make music only for themselves, such as shower singers or secretly-sing-along-with-the-radio types, and there are performers, people who make music purposefully for others. They are people who make music because they are required to and people who do so simply from desire. Some music makers study seriously, while others are content to make music however they can, without special effort. In addition, Wade emphasizes the process of music which is called, “musicking”. He suggests that music makers do not only make a sound. They create music which requires a process of reason. The justification of musical standards and aesthetics is seen through how it is done, rather than the production itself. Later, he even extended his ideas by discussing that music has mostly, if not always, had an association with a particular purpose. “Music can be made to function in multiple ways. As a mode of interaction among people, it serves a social function”. And thus, music makers are anyone who makes music, and not just a sound. In relation to jschlatt, prior to his release of his cover, he would not be seen as a musician. But his cover showed that he was proficient enough in music to make performative and aesthetic choices for himself and his own artistic vision. The example of Jonathan Schlatt has illustrated the argument of Wade as he emphasized that all people will express themselves musically as a normal part of life–both in portraying musical capabilities, aesthetic processes and associated functions.
In support to the previously mentioned article, an excerpt of Janet Wolff, “The ideology of autonomous art,” suggests that music is in itself not merely autonomous, because it has a largely social function. Music has its purpose and association. Music makers sometimes use music for political influence, entertainment or education. And for the American streamer, his purpose was to show how he would actually sound as a singer, thereby taking control of his singing voice.
Despite not being a musician, we believe that Schlatt served as a music maker in that he created music for a specific purpose. That being, to take autonomy of his own voice that, till that moment, had been used by others for their own purposes through AI. We live in a world wherein one can use the timbre of any voice as an instrument. Going back to the article that we read in class, the owners of those voices were using their voices to make money. Their reaction to their voices being used in a way they didn’t want them to be used in was an outright rejection. Theft, they called it. Schlatt’s case is an interesting one as it is a new kind of interaction within the realm of music. Someone who hasn’t historically been in music, entering music in order to defend their voice. And, in our humble opinion, doing it well. We believe that this is a valuable case study for the future of AI in music.

2024.03.25 04:02 allcarbon2005 Porous Carbon Material and Supercapacitors

Porous Carbon Material and Supercapacitors
1.What is the Porous Carbon Material?
Porous carbon material refers to a solid material with carbon as the main skeleton, with pore structures of different sizes and high specific surface area.
According to the classification of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), porous carbon materials can be divided into microporous materials (d<2nm), mesoporous materials (2nm50nm) according to pore size. According to structural characteristics, they can be divided into disordered porous carbon materials and ordered porous carbon materials.
The pore structure of carbon materials prepared by traditional activation methods is mostly microporous, which can only adsorb small molecular substances, and has poor adsorption effect on some molecules with larger diameters. Mesoporous carbon materials have very good performance in this regard.
At the same time, mesoporous carbon materials also have very important applications in the field of electrochemistry. The preparation of mesoporous carbon microspheres with high specific surface area, large pore volume, and narrow pore size distribution as electrode materials can improve the specific capacity, rate performance and performance of capacitors.

2.The Relationship between Porous Carbon Materials and Supercapacitors

The most commonly used electrode materials for supercapacitors are various forms of carbon, such as activated carbon (AC), carbon fiber cloth (AFC), carbide-derived carbon (CDC), carbon aerogels, graphane, and carbon nanoparticles tube (CNT).
Carbon-based electrodes mainly exhibit electrostatic double-layer capacitance, and pseudocapacitance may also occur under different pore sizes. Pore diameters range from micropores (<2nm) to mesopores (2~50nm), and only micropores can produce pseudocapacitance. When the pore size approaches the size of the dissolved shell, the solvent molecules are excluded, and only undissolved ions fill the pores, increasing the ion packing density and storage capacity through the Faraday hydrogen gas interlayer.

2.1 Activated Carbon

Activated carbon was the first material used in EDLC electrodes. Although its conductivity is only about 0.3 ten thousandths of that of metal (1,250~2,000 S/m), it is enough for supercapacitors.
Activated carbon is an extremely porous carbon with a very high specific surface area - one gram of activated carbon has a surface area of about 1,000 to 3,000 square meters, which is about the size of 4 to 12 tennis courts. The electrodes mainly use low-density activated carbon, which has many pores and has a high electric double layer capacitance value.
Solid activated carbon, also known as consolidated amorphous carbon (CAC), is the most common electrode material for supercapacitors and may be less expensive than other carbon derivatives. Activated carbon powder can be turned into such blocks by pressing. An electrode with a surface area of about 1000 m2/g has a typical electric double layer capacitance of about 10 μF/cm2 and a specific capacitance of about 100 F/g.
As of 2010, nearly all commercial supercapacitors use powdered activated carbon made from coconut shells. Activated charcoal made from coconut shells is more porous than charcoal made from wood.

ACC activated carbon has been recognized by certificate authorities in different fields such as NSF, BV, HALA and Kosher. For More information, Visit our Website 🌐 www.allcarbon.com.cn Or Email us 📨 info@allcarbon.com.cn

2.2 Activated Carbon Fiber

Activated carbon fibers (ACF) are made from activated carbon and have a typical diameter of 10 µm. They can have micropores with very uniform pore sizes that can be easily controlled. The surface area of textiles made from ACF is approximately 2500 m2/g. The ACF electrode has low resistance along the fiber axis and makes good contact with the collector.
As far as activated carbon is concerned, the ACF electrode mainly exhibits double electric layer capacitance, and also has a small amount of pseudocapacitance due to micropores.

3. Factors affecting the capacitance performance of porous carbon-based supercapacitors

Porous carbon is a key material for next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems, including batteries and supercapacitors. This is due to the inherent advantages of porous carbon, with high electrical conductivity, chemical/electrochemical/thermal resistance, easy surface functionalization, and high specific surface area.
Factors affecting the capacitance performance of porous carbon-based supercapacitors include specific surface area, pore structure, surface chemical state, carbon structural defects, heteroatom doping, and electrode structure design.

https://preview.redd.it/2jh6pzwebeqc1.jpg?width=875&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87808624e43882e8ffd26e50d4fa34040c63ec3c
A high specific surface area is beneficial to improving the capacitive performance of porous carbon, but there is no strict linear relationship between its specific surface area and normalized capacitance. Generally, the specific capacity of porous carbon is optimal when the pore size matches the size of the desolvated ions (or bare ions).
Because micropores can provide abundant chemically active sites for ion storage, mesopores can serve as channels for ion migration and transmission, and macropores can serve as ion buffer spaces, hierarchical porous carbons with appropriate proportions of micro/meso/macropores will have Excellent capacitive performance.
Accurate analysis of the specific surface area and pore structure of porous carbon will provide a basis for the development and precise preparation of capacitive carbon. Ar adsorption/desorption and QSDFT analysis based on the adsorption branch are usually used to obtain the specific surface area and pore size distribution.
The existence or introduction of structural defects (vacancies, edges) and surface heteroatoms (O, N, P, S, F, B) will change the surface heterogeneity of carbon materials, thereby changing the conductivity and wettability of carbon electrodes. , and induced pseudocapacitance.
In addition, reasonable electrode structure design (such as graphene conductive agent, multi-dimensional gradient electrode) can effectively improve the capacitive performance of porous carbon.

4. Innovative Preparation of porous carbon from biomass raw materials

Carbon materials prepared from biomass and its wastes have become one of the most popular electrode materials today due to their low cost, abundant resources, and environmental friendliness.
① Luo Han Guo is one of the most abundant plant species in Guilin, China, and has extremely high value as a traditional Chinese medicinal material. Its pulp can be extracted to obtain the natural sweetener mogroside. However, the fruit's husk is often discarded as waste due to its low medicinal content.
The shell of Luo Han Guo has a sponge-like structure, with slightly raised pores on the peel. This inherent structural feature confers the advantages of porous structures. In addition, the concentration of volatile substances in monk fruit shells is relatively low, which significantly improves the carbonization yield.

Guilin University of Technology published a paper titled "Porous carbon derived from a by-product" in the journal "Diamond & Related Materials" of traditional Chinese medicine for high-performance aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors", the research proposed a design strategy for electrode preparation by carbonizing mangosteen shells.
Through high-temperature carbonization of mangosteen shells, electrode materials with rich pore structure, high specific surface area and porosity were prepared. The ZHSC prepared using the carbonized and KOH-activated material as the cathode has a high specific capacity of 228.7 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1, and the battery has a high capacity retention rate of 92.6% after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles.

This research not only opens up an effective way for the development of energy storage materials and devices, but also provides new ideas and opportunities for the processing and high-value utilization of absorbent cotton and other medical waste.
From: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpowsour.2024.234146
③Harbin Normal University published a paper in the journal "New J. Chem" titled "Two biomass material-derived self-doped (N/O) porous carbons from waste coriander and lilac with high specific surface areas and "high capacitance for supercapacitors" paper, studying the use of waste coriander and cloves to prepare two porous carbons for high-performance supercapacitors.

This study confirms that waste coriander and cloves can be used as an ideal source for preparing porous carbon due to their excellent electrochemical properties and abundant resources, which have huge commercial potential.
④ Waste almond shells are used as raw materials to prepare porous carbon materials for use in broadband structural microwave absorbers.Hunan University published a paper titled "Controlling the microstructure of biomass-derived porous carbon to assemble structural absorber for broadening bandwidth" in the journal Carbon.
The study chose almond shells as raw materials because of its unique layered porous structure. , porous carbon materials with different microstructures were prepared through a simple chemical activation process.

Experiments show that the EAB of porous carbon materials can be effectively expanded by changing the microstructure of the porous carbon materials. Subsequently, these porous carbon materials were used individually to assemble structural absorbers. Coincidentally, the EAB of structural absorbers can also be expanded by changing the microstructure of porous carbon materials.

2024.03.23 16:22 deistic-nutcase Evidence favouring the Θεὸς reading of 1 Timothy 3:16.

Evidence favouring the Θεὸς reading of 1 Timothy 3:16.

External Evidence

God is often translated to "he" or "who" in most modern translations. This is because in some Greek manuscripts the word God / Theós (θεος) in Greek capitals (θEOC), being a ‘sacred word’, was sometimes contracted to:
  1. θC with a line above it, or
  2. OC, without the line in the O, and without the line above the word, or
  3. O
This is a Jewish practice due to their reverence to the word “God”. Jews nowadays still write “God” as “G-d”. The problem is, the contracted words are similar with other Greek words:
  1. OC is a nominative singular masculine pronoun: “who”, “whom”, or “he”
  2. O means “which”
Dr. Graham G. Thomason has done a thorough analysis of most Greek MSS’ reading on 1 Timothy 3:16. He tabulated his findings in a spreadsheet. Here are the counts of the various readings:
  1. God (θEOC or θεος): 563 MSS.
  2. God who (ο θεος or ος θεος): 9 MSS
  3. Which (O): 1 MSS (GA 06)
  4. He (OC or ος): 7 MSS -> GA 01 / Codex Sinaiticus (4th century), GA 33 (9th-11th century), GA 1175 (11th century), GA 463 (12th century), GA 365 (13th century), GA 442 (13th century).
  5. Ambiguous: 5 MSS
  6. Lacuna (missing pages): 96 MSS
  7. Illegible: 5 MSS
  8. Cannot find scanned images: 53 MSS
  9. Unidentified: 3 MSS
We see that the reading for OC or ος are mostly late MSS, with Codex Sinaiticus being the only early MSS. But Sinaiticus is known to be a low-quality manuscript since it is a rejected MSS that did not pass quality assurance and was treated as a cache. Why should Codex Sinaiticus be favored against all other Greek MSS? Dr. Bruce Metzger's claim:
"no uncial (in the first hand) earlier than the eighth or ninth century [...] supports θεος; all ancient versions presuppose ὃς or ὃ"
is incorrect, because there are 2 uncials from the 5th century (Alexandrinus and Ephraemi) that support θεος (God), but there's only 1 uncial (Sinaiticus) that support ος (He).

https://preview.redd.it/bjh1d3r5o3qc1.png?width=1353&format=png&auto=webp&s=c3241c96819a37e2bb2e1a2517490cd9f87d7345
Dr. Thomason also lists Lectionaries and non-Greek MSS favoring θEOC (God) in 1 Tim 3:16:
  1. Lectionaries: Apost 2, 52, 69, 5, 7, 11, 22, 23, 25, 30, 33, 13, 14, 18, 38, 49, 45, 46, 51, 57, 62, 65, 58, 77, 82, 84, 89, 119, 123, 125, 128. Total is 31.
  2. Non-Greek MSS: Harkleian Syriac (616 AD), Georgian (5th/6th century), Slavonic (9th century)

He also lists Church Fathers who quoted “God (θEOC) was manifested in the flesh” starting from 1st century to 12th century AD, and noted that no Church Fathers supported the reading “He (OC) was manifested in the flesh”. Therefore, Dr. Metzger's claim that "no patristic writer prior to the last third of the fourth century testifies to the reading of θεος" is incorrect.
  • The reading for θEOC (God) is overwhelming: 11 uncials (versus 1 of the critics, ℵ), the vast majority (over 98½%) of minuscules, 31 lectionaries, 3 early versions, and a great number of Church Fathers, including many of earlier date than any manuscripts we have.
  • In contrast, the reading for OC (he) is hopeless: just 1 uncial, just 6 minuscules, 3 lectionaries, 1 early version (the Gothic, which poses some doubts also), and few, if any Church Fathers.

Patristic Evidence

Barnabas, 1st century in ΒΑΡΝΑΒΑ ΕΠΙΣΤΟΛΗ, The Epistle of Barnabas
Behold again, Jesus was not the son of man, but the son of God, who was by a figure made manifest in flesh.

Ignatius, The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, 107-110 AD: Chapter 7:
εἷς ἰατρός ἐστιν, σαρκικός τε καὶ πνευματικός γεννητὸς καὶ ἀγέννητος, ἐν σαρκὶ γενόμενος θεός, ἐν θανάτῳ ζωὴ ἀληθινή, καὶ ἐκ Μαρίας καὶ ἐκ θεοῦ, πρῶτον παθητὸς καὶ τότε ἀπαθής, ᾿Ιηθοῦς Χριστὸς ὁ κύριος ἡμων.

For there is but one physician, both fleshly and spiritual, born and unborn, God come in the flesh, true life in death, from both Mary and God, first subject to suffering and then beyond suffering, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Chapter 19:
ἄγνοια καθῃρεῖτο, παλαιὰ βασιλέια διεφθείρετο θεοῦ ἀνθρωπίνως φανερουμένου εἰς καινότητα ἀϊδίου ζωῆς· ; Ignorance was destroyed and the ancient realm was brought to ruin, when God became manifest in a human way, for the newness of eternal life

The Epistle of Ignatius to the Magnesians, 110 AD
ὅτι εἷς θεός ἐστιν ὁ φανερώσας ἑαυτὸν διὰ ᾿Ιηωοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ; that there is one God, who manifested himself through Jesus Christ his son

Dionysius of Alexandria (ca. 190 - 265 AD), epistle from Dionysius to Paul of Samosata. Note that some people doubt Dionysius wrote this epistle, but it is certainly addressed to Paul of Samosata (ca. 200 – 275 AD) whom Dionysius opposed.
θεος γαρ εφανερωθη εν σαρκι; For God was manifest in the flesh

Didymus of Alexandria or Didymus the Blind (c. 309/314 - 398), in Didymus' De Trinitate, page 27, 347 AD. Didymus mentions Timothy and quotes the text verbatim
Και Τιμοθέη δε γράψας, εις άκρον έθεολόγησεν περί αυτού … θεός εφανερώθη εν σαρκι; And Timothy, when he had written, reasoned to the end concerning him… God was manifest in the flesh

Diodorus of Tarsus (- 392 AD). Diodorus was bishop of Tarsus. His most famous disciple was John Chrysostom. Dr. John Burgon mentions him as:
Diodorus adduces S. Paul's actual words and expressly says that he finds them in S. Paul's Epistle to Timothy.
His writing is recorded in Catenae Graecorum Patrum {Chain of Greek Fathers) on New Testament by Dr. John Anthony Cramer, page 124 line 8
… και πρὸς πρὸς Τιμόθεον γράφων, "Θεὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί," …; … And he wrote to Timothy, "God is manifest in the flesh," …

Basil the Great, 4th century, in Saint Basil, The Letters
αὐτὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί, γενόμενος ἐκ γυναικός; He Himself was made manifest in the flesh, “made of a woman ....”

Theodoret, Bishop of Cyrus in Syria, 5th century From Quaest(io) in Genes(in), chapter 29
δήλη" οὕτως ἀόρατος ὧν ὁ θεὸς Λόγος (61) διὰ τῆς σαρχὸς ἐπὶ γῆς ὥφθη, χαὶ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις συναν ἐστράφη, χαὶ ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρχὶ; "The Word of God" (61) is indeed invisible, for the Word of God (61) was sent forth through the flesh upon the earth, and was turned unto men, and was manifested in the flesh.
From Interpretatio Epist(ulae) I Ad Tim(otheum) Cap(ut) III
« Καὶ ὁμολογουμένως μέγα ἐστὶ τὸ τῆς εὐσεθείας μυστήριον. » Μνυστήριον δὲ αὐτὸ χαλεῖ, ὡς ἄνωθεν μὲν προορισθὲν, ὕστερον δὲ φανερωθέν. « Θεὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρχί. »; "And great is the mystery of godliness." And the mystery itself is fulfilled, as having been ordained from above, and revealed hereafter. "God is manifest in the flesh. "

From Dialogus I Inmutabilis
;I praise the apostle who wrote “without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

Apud Athanasium (430 AD), Opp. ii. 33
« Ὁ μολογουμένως μέγα ἐστὶ τὸ τῆς εὐσεδείας μυστή- ριον, Θεὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρχὶ, ἐδιχαιώθη ἐν Πνεύ- ματι, ὥφθη ἀγγέλοις, ἐχηρύχθη ἐν ξθνεσιν, ἐπιστεύθη ἐν χόσμῳ, ἀνελήφθη ἐν δόξῃ. »; "Therefore great is the mystery of godliness, God was manifest in the flesh, made manifest in the Spirit, given to angels, made manifest in nations, made manifest in the world, taken up in glory. "

Macedonius II, Patriarch of Constantinople, 5th century
Macedonius ... is said to have been deposed as having falsified the gospels ... and to have made ὡς (hōs, not hŏs), so that it was God; he appeared by means of flesh.
Macedonius was accused of changing Deus qui into Deus quia, i.e. ὃς θεὸς into ὡς θεὸς, so Macedonius read "God was manifested in the flesh" all along.

Epiphanius, Deacon of Catana, 8th century in Sacrosancta Concilia
Audi igitur Paulum magna voce clamantem , & veritatem iftam corroborantem : Deus manifestatus est in carne, justificatus est in spiritu , apparuit angelis , predicates est gentibus, creditus est in mundo, assumptus est in gloria.; Hear therefore Paul crying out with a loud voice, and corroborating the true truth: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Theodorus Studita, 8th century, in Theodori Studitae Epsitolae, Pars II, 36 and 156 36:
Deus manifestatus est in carne, justificatus est in spiritu , apparuit angelis , predicates est gentibus, creditus est in mundo, assumptus est in gloria.; God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

I've recently had the chance to try out the TruGlo 4x32 Rangefinding/Trajectory Compensating Crossbow Scope, a nifty piece of equipment for enthusiastic crossbow users like me. The scope's main highlight was its ability to find the range and calculate the correct trajectory for my crossbow bolts. In my experience, this feature proved to be quite handy in my local archery range, particularly for those days when the wind and temperature were unstable.
One of the things that stood out to me was the scope's robustness. It was designed to handle the harsh conditions of the outdoors, as evidenced by the sturdy aluminum body and the shock-resistant construction. This scope also offered a generous 4-inch eye relief, a feature that helped protect my eyes during those blustery hunting sessions.
The scope's lenses were fully-coated, making them highly resistant to glare, a common concern for crossbow users shooting in low-light conditions. Additionally, the durable leavespring for windage and elevation adjustments were a welcomed bonus, allowing me to finetune my shots with ease.
On the downside, one of the screws on the scope rings was stripped, a minor issue that wasn't a deal-breaker. I also discovered that the scope wasn't rated specifically for a particular crossbow speed. To achieve optimal accuracy, I had to adjust the scope manually, which was a bit tricky and time-consuming.
Regardless of these minor downsides, the TruGlo 4x32 Rangefinding/Trajectory Compensating Crossbow Scope proved to be an essential piece of equipment in my hunting arsenal. Its ease of use, durable construction, and helpful features make it an excellent choice for anyone seeking to upgrade their crossbow hunting experience.

In my pursuit of a new spotting scope that could enhance my wildlife viewing and target shooting experiences, I stumbled upon the SVBONY SV28 Spotting Scopes. From the moment I opened the package, I was impressed by its sleek exterior and sturdy construction.
One feature that stood out to me was its range of magnification capabilities - the SV28 allowed me to adjust the magnification according to my target distance, providing crystal clear image quality. The lens was exceptionally sharp, making it perfect for both target shooting and observing nature. Another aspect I appreciated was the ease of focus adjustment, ensuring that every detail was visible no matter the distance.
However, I have to say that the tripod that came with the unit seemed a bit lackluster compared to my usual tripod. I ended up using my own sturdier tripod, but it was still nice to have the option included in the package. Additionally, while the phone adapter was a nice addition, I felt it could have been more user-friendly.
Overall, the SVBONY SV28 Spotting Scopes exceeded my expectations, offering outstanding clarity and exceptional value for its price. Though there were a few minor quibbles, I would definitely recommend it to others in search of a reliable, affordable spotting scope for their outdoor adventures.

As an amateur astronomer, I recently gave the Tuword Telescope Pro 400/70 FMC a try to explore the stars and the moon. Its 70mm aperture and large field of view made it a perfect telescope for me. The fully coated optical glass lens provided clear and bright imaging. One of the best features was the fine adjustment lever, which allowed me to effortlessly adjust the viewing position.
The telescope felt sturdy and well-built, made of premium materials. The included smartphone adapter made it convenient to capture stunning images of celestial objects. The star finder quickly located objects and the 45° orthogonal prism displayed the ortho-rectified true color image comfortably.
I also appreciated the adjustable aluminum tripod, which was easy to set up and provided a stable platform for viewing. The travel bag made the telescope portable and easy to store.

Bresser See-It Scope HD: A Handy Tool for Exploring the Hidden
Recently, I found myself in a situation where I needed to take a closer look at something in a hard-to-reach place. I grabbed my Bresser See-It Scope HD, set up the flexible coil and bright LED light, and got to work.
One of the most impressive things about this scope is its versatility in navigating tight spaces. The coil is flexible and easy to maneuver, allowing me to explore various angles of the subject. Plus, the bright LED light was a game-changer when it came to illuminating dark areas.
The 2.31-inch LCD screen is large enough to gather a group of friends or coworkers around to view the action together. I appreciate how the digital camera mounted on the coil makes it easy to record video and take photos without having to switch to a different device.
That being said, there were a few downsides to using the Bresser See-It Scope HD. For one, the scope's 1 times magnification might not be enough for those looking for a more detailed view. Additionally, I noticed that the device's image quality wasn't on par with higher-end digital camera options.
Overall, the Bresser See-It Scope HD is a handy tool for those seeking accessibility and illumination in hard-to-reach areas. While its digital camera feature leaves room for improvement, the flexibility and bright LED light make it a worthwhile addition to any toolbox.

I recently came across the Bushnell Trophy Xtreme Spotting Scope during my search for a reliable and affordable spotting scope. With its 20-60x magnification and generous 3.1-1mm exit pupil, this scope proved to be a game-changer when it came to spotting my target from a distance. The Porro prism and multiple layers of anti-reflective coating ensured crystal clear and detailed views, even in bright sunlight.
One of the standout features of this spotting scope was the adjustable sunshade with built-in objective cover, which provided excellent protection for the large 65mm objective. The waterproof design was also a nice touch, as it allowed me to use the scope in various weather conditions without any issues. The 18mm of eye relief and twist-up eyecups were comfortable for extended use, while the BaK-4 glass provided a bright and clear image.
The only downside I encountered was the stiffness of the adjustable eye piece, which made it a bit challenging to turn initially. However, this issue wasn't a deal-breaker, and overall, the scope delivered on its promise of exceptional brightness and clarity. The addition of a waterproof hard case and side-carry soft case provided extra convenience, making it a great option for both hunting and target shooting enthusiasts.
In conclusion, the Bushnell Trophy Xtreme Spotting Scope proved to be a reliable and versatile option for someone looking for a budget-friendly spotting scope. The combination of features, such as the adjustable sunshade, waterproof design, and comfortable 18mm of eye relief, made this scope a standout choice among its competitors.

I've always been a fan of having precise instruments at hand, especially when it involves navigation. That's why I was intrigued by the Weems & Plath 3.5 x 40mm Scope Only 70 005. I have been using it regularly for a couple of months now, and let me tell you - the experience has been nothing short of satisfying.
The main highlight of this scope is undoubtedly its versatility. With its 3.5x magnification and 40mm objective lens, it perfectly balances between powerful and convenient, allowing you to get a clear view even when the conditions aren't ideal. It's been a lifesaver during my sailing trips!
However, as with any product, it does have its downsides. For instance, the scope feels a tad heavy to hold for extended periods, which could become tiresome for some users. Also, the assembly process could have been a bit smoother. But these minor quirks didn't deter me from using it frequently.
In summary, the Weems & Plath 3.5 x 40mm Scope Only 70 005 is a reliable and versatile tool for navigational enthusiasts. Despite its slight drawbacks, the overall experience is definitely worth the investment. Just ensure you have a tamaya sextant (sold separately) to make the most out of this gem.

🔗Barska CO11500 Colorado Spotting Scope with 50 mm Objective Lens and 15-40x Magnification

https://preview.redd.it/canflonx7npc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8468ab4e16ac043b0d147de02a83e00ac1eba7a6
A few weeks ago, I decided to try a 3X9X40 spotting scope to enhance my backyard bird watching experience. The Barska CO11500 Colorado Spotting Scope caught my eye with its affordable price and promising features, such as the 50 mm objective lens and adjustable 15-40x magnification.
Upon receiving the scope, I was taken aback by its surprisingly sleek design and robust construction. The rubber armor not only feels sturdy but also provides a comfortable grip when handling the device. The tripod, while not the sturdiest, is easy to set up and works well for stable shots. The addition of a soft carrying case and tabletop tripod is a great bonus for those who love to travel with their gear.
Using the scope was a revelation. The clarity of the images at the higher magnification levels was truly impressive, especially when I was viewing distant birds in their natural habitat. With the help of this scope, I was able to appreciate the fine details of the feathers and observe their natural behaviors up close. However, it was a bit of a challenge to focus at the lower end of the magnification spectrum. Regardless, I remained satisfied with the overall experience.
While this scope is an affordable option for bird enthusiasts, it does come with its fair share of drawbacks. The optics are not the best, and the lens caps tend to fall off easily. The tripod, though functional, is quite flimsy and wobbly, which can pose a challenge when trying to achieve a steady shot. Additionally, the scope is not weather-resistant, so it might not be the best choice for outdoor adventures in less-than-optimal weather conditions.
In conclusion, the Barska CO11500 Colorado Spotting Scope is a great budget option for those looking to enhance their backyard bird watching experience. Its ease of use, impressive magnification levels, and versatile accessories make it an attractive choice for beginners. However, potential buyers should be aware of its limitations, including the flimsy tripod and non-optimal lens performance, to ensure that their expectations are aligned with what this scope has to offer.

I've been experimenting with the Fullum Folded Newtonian 40" f/3.5 scope lately, and it has been quite an experience! The optical design is simple but very effective - it's a Newtonian reflector, which I found to be quite impressive. The objective diameter measures in at 1016 mm, providing me with a vast field of view. The focal length is 3556 mm, and the focal ratio comes in at f/3.5. These specs deliver a fantastic resolving power of 0.11 arc seconds, allowing me to spot the stars with incredible detail. The stellar limiting magnitude value of 17.73 was also quite impressive, enhancing my stargazing experience.
Using this scope, I've been able to achieve a maximum magnification of 2540x (theoretical). While it's not the highest I've ever used, it has been more than enough for my needs, especially in combination with the incredible light gathering power of 21,066 times the human eye. The scope also folds well, making it easy to carry around and store when not in use.

I recently had the chance to test out the Meade LX90, and I've got to say, it's been quite the journey. I was excited to explore the night sky with this powerful optical tube assembly. With its 8-inch aperture and impressive f/10 focal ratio, it certainly promised to deliver some breathtaking sights.
The built-in GPS receiver was one of the standout features for me. With just a few moments of setup, it was able to determine my precise location and time, allowing the scope to align itself for optimal viewing. The LX90's smart scopes also picked two alignment stars automatically for me, making the process of fine-tuning my alignment a breeze.
However, there were a couple of minor drawbacks I encountered. The first was the scope's relatively large and cumbersome size and weight. Carrying it and setting it up in the field required a bit more effort than I was accustomed to. I found I had to be mindful of the weight, as it was quite substantial, especially when paired with the optional tripod.
Additionally, I noticed that the Meade LX90 was a bit sensitive to vibrations, requiring the use of its built-in anti-vibration pads. While they helped mitigate the issue, it was still something I had to take into account when setting up the scope.
But overall, I've had a great time using the Meade LX90-ACF. The stunning views it has delivered have made any minor inconveniences completely worth it. If you're looking for a powerful, feature-packed optical tube assembly that can help you explore the wonders of the universe, this might just be the perfect choice for you.

Buyer's Guide

3X9X40 scopes are a type of riflescope designed for long-range precision shooting. They are known for their high magnification and compact size, making them ideal for hunting, target shooting, and competitive events. In this buyer's guide, we will discuss the important features, considerations, and general advice when choosing a 3X9X40 scope.

Magnification and Objective Lens

The magnification of a 3X9X40 scope is typically 3-9x, with a 40mm objective lens. This combination provides a versatile range of magnification options, allowing the shooter to adjust for different shooting distances and environments. A larger objective lens allows more light to enter the scope, which can be beneficial in low-light conditions.

Lens Quality and Brightness

https://preview.redd.it/tun22g618npc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9cd22571a970cc75f3e87af1e259d87e1962f2e8
The quality of the lenses used in the scope can greatly affect its overall performance. Look for fully multi-coated lenses, which provide better light transmission and reduce glare and distortion. A high-quality scope will also have a better field of view, making it easier to track moving targets.

Reticle Type and Illumination

Reticle choices for 3X9X40 scopes include mil-dot, crosshair, and various other designs. Consider the type of shooting you will be doing and choose a reticle that best suits your needs. Illuminated reticles can be helpful in low-light conditions and may have multiple brightness settings to choose from.

Turret and Adjustment Mechanisms

The turret and adjustment mechanisms of a 3X9X40 scope can greatly affect its ease of use and accuracy. Look for scopes with audible or tactile adjustments, as well as adjustable parallax and windage settings. A high-quality turret will provide smooth and accurate adjustments, allowing you to make fine-tuned adjustments to your shots.

Construction Materials and Durability

A good 3X9X40 scope will be constructed from durable materials, such as aircraft-grade aluminum. It should also be waterproof, fog-proof, and shock-resistant to withstand various hunting and shooting environments.

https://preview.redd.it/xt8gqls18npc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66f578f433eeea7d2dae797a0fc7ff9ee3e4c3c6

Weight and Size

Consider the weight and size of the scope when making your purchase. A lightweight and compact scope is easier to carry and maneuver in the field, but it may also be less stable and more delicate. Choose a scope with a balance of weight and size that suits your needs.

Price and Brand Reputation

Research the brand reputation and pricing for various 3X9X40 scopes. Look for brands that have a strong reputation for quality and customer satisfaction. Be prepared to spend a bit more for a high-quality scope, as the overall performance and durability may be worth the investment.
Choosing a 3X9X40 scope involves considering various features and factors. By focusing on lens quality, reticle type, turret mechanism, construction materials, weight, and price, you can find the best 3X9X40 scope for your needs. Remember to always test any scope before making a purchase to ensure it meets your expectations and requirements.

🔗Advanced Coma-Free Optical Tube Assembly for Sky Observation

2024.03.04 10:29 Big-Bad-5405 looking for product grid and comparison plugin for non woocommerce

I need some help to set-up two pages on my site: One is a simple product grid which you see thousands of. Something like a 3 column card with picture and some basic features of the product. I am not able to find nothing which match my very basic request. I landed on ACF and the doing the prodict grid via gutenberg but I have a large amount of products and see this as a massive waste of time given the fact I have everything I need in a excel sheet...
The second one is I want to setup a page in which you can compare two products by selecting brand and model from a drop down menu like as ex https://www.cars.com/research/compare/. Any hints?
I don't have woocommerce-is this the solution?not sure about the benefits as I dont want to setup an onlineshop

2024.02.08 23:10 NYEDMD Fork in the road; what’s your advice?

Note: this is primarily directed at back of the house people, especially those with a few years experience (Sous chefs, CDCs, Executive Chefs, etc.) but we’d value anyone in the industry with an opinion. Very much appreciate all those who take the time to read it.
My son will be finishing a two-year Associates Program in Culinary Arts this spring. He’s done well — #1 or #2 in his class, a Gold Medal award from a regional ACF competition, and now one of five on his school’s ACF team as they approach regionals. He’s also worked (part-time) as a commis chef and chef and chef de tourant at two excellent restaurants and acquitted himself well in both positions. More importantly, he seems to enjoy the work, and wants to be a chef. His ultimate goal — of course — is to own his own restaurant, but he understands how much time, effort, and luck it will take to get there. His original plan was to finish two years of school, then start working (as a line cook or chef de tourant) in New York City.
His school also offers a four year Bachelor’s Business Administration program in Culinary Arts Management, with a focus (in the last two years) on the business of running a restaurant. Clearly, the courses are relevant to managing/owning a successful restaurant, although one could argue that it will be years before he gets to utilize many of things he’ll be learning. The costs of these additional two years are substantial, but between loans, scholarships, work, and our assistance, fortunately not a deal-breaker.
So… the question I’m asking is this: With the ultimate goal of owning/co-owning a restaurant, is it better to stick to the original plan, i.e.: start in a restaurant full-time, work your way up the chain, and fill in the business courses (as a part-time student) slowly over the next several years? OR do an additional two years of school full-time (hopefully doing some kitchen work part-time) for the Bachelor’s in Business Administration?
Sincere thanks not just for your thoughts and counsel, but for the tremendous time and effort you put in each and every day.
