2024.05.18 21:18 ApprehensiveCap6525 Earth is a Lost Colony (28)

A/N: yeah I changed up the Alliance admiral's name from Shepard Adama to Sheparda Dama (so creative i know) because the old one was going to fuck me over badly at some point. It would be like trying to make a legitimate, serious fantasy novel with a wizard named Albus Gandalf. I was NOT cooking when I came up with that shit.
First Previous Wiki Next
It was said that no plan ever survived contact with the enemy. That, at least in the case of Marcus Wayne’s infiltration of Neldia, was proven entirely true.
His ship, the Peacemaker, had undergone an extensive refit before its jump to Neldia to both modify its sensor signature and repair its failing Aegis barrier. The first objective succeeded. The second did not.
One day later, leaving the derelict Ultimate Vigil behind in deep space, the United Human Alliance courier ship Winged Deliverance logged a real space entry at the edge of the Neldia system. Its crew, having spent their waking hours plagued by hallucinations and enduring horrible nightmares as they slept, found this shift very welcome. The worst, though they could hardly believe it, was still yet to come.
“The Neldian fleet is mustering for war,” rumbled the man who had once held the title and security codes of an Alliance sector admiral. Now, he was a traitor to his homeland. “Security will be high.”
“No need to worry, Admiral,” said Marcus Wayne. “Your code will get us through.” It would not.
It took two hours for the Peacemaker, disguised as the Winged Deliverance, to be challenged by the Neldian Armada. “Transmit clearance code,” said an automated voice. Marcus took out a data disc with the admiral's clearance code on it.
“Hold,” said Terris. She was clad in black, her active camouflage offline to save battery, and she had been sitting at the passive sensor console for the past three hours. “Look at this.” A news broadcast popped up in front of Marcus Wayne and his officers. Sector Admiral Sheparda Dama, or at least he was once a sector admiral, had been tried and convicted of high treason.
“It was a secret trial,” Dama said, still in shock at the revelation. “I had no knowledge of this.”
“Well, that tracks, but what do we do now? What code gets us through?”
“Transmit clearance code,” the voice said again, “or adjust course.”
Dama thought for a moment. “Change course,” he said. “We’re not getting through.”
They did. A great sense of defeat took hold in the hearts of the crew. They would never reach the Neldian hypercom. Sheparda Dama, who would have gladly given his life in defense of humankind, would never get the chance to be the man who broke their chains.
The Peacemaker was halfway out of the Neldia system before Terris spoke again. “Hold it,” she said. “I have an idea.”
That was why she had been placed where she was. Clad in an airtight stealth suit. Inside a hollowed-out asteroid. On a ballistic journey to the heart of Neldian space. It was the most insane idea that Marcus Wayne had ever seen.
But, sometimes, insanity was a symptom of genius.
Terris flew past the Neldian Armada undetected. Many asteroids entered the inner system this way, flung by outer-system prospecting ships to the foundries and shipyards in Neldian orbit, and they were thrown and caught so frequently that only the most cursory of inspections was put upon each one. Terris passed the Alliance fleet entirely undetected.
Terris’ chameleon suit could mimic the sensor return of the precious metals it was buried in, at least enough to fool a probing scan, and the cuts made by Protectoral engineers had been so precise that Terris had fit inside there with barely a centimeter of space to spare. She was effectively entombed inside sixty meters of solid rock.
Interstellar espionage was not a job for the claustrophobic.
Finally, after days of waiting, the signal came. She was in range. A mental command triggered a series of shaped charges in the rock above her, if such directions existed in microgravity, and forty pea-sized explosives blasted a circular tunnel all the way to the asteroid surface. If just one of them had failed, that rock might have been her tomb.
Terris tried not to think about that as she began climbing her way out. A brief burst from her suit’s EVA thrusters was enough to start her on her way, and the tunnel out was wide enough for her to use her arms and legs to speed things up. Finally, after too long a wait, Terris saw the Neldian sun for the very first time.
There was fire in the distance. Comm chatter on every band. Warships burning hard for the outer system. The Coalition fleet was here.
She zoomed in, far more than she had ever had to before, and she could pick out the faintest flashes of blue as warships exploded in the black. A brief crawl around the asteroid, which also helped to warm up her muscles after days of inactivity, let her discern an attack force engaging the Alliance fleet. After a moment’s hesitation, weighing the risks, Terris activated her passive sensor suite to try and decrypt Alliance military chatter.
Instantly, her sensors were flooded with noise from the defensive bastions. The fleet base at the L5 point was loudest, its comm operators screaming indecipherably at fellow Alliance elements fighting in the black. Neldian orbit, where the hypercom station was, seemed to be the centerpiece of all the communications traffic. The hypercom, unsurprisingly, was being used as a relay for comm traffic all across the system. Terris made a note to hack its server banks for intelligence, and perhaps leave a timed virus or two to shut down the system after she was gone.
Her suit bleeped, alerting her that she was in optimum position to make the leap to the hypercom. She zoomed in on it, a red and spiked thing just like everything else the Alliance made, and calculated the right trajectory to land right on its metal surface.
Trying to jump from a moving asteroid out past Neldia’s rings and hit a hypercom station barely three hundred meters in diameter was like shooting a rifle from a jumbo jet in hopes of hitting a mosquito down on Earth. A nearly impossible shot, even with Coalition computers to help make the jump, and anyone lucky enough to make it would have been better served bankrupting their local casino at the slot machines.
Terris gave a command to her suit, activating a set of ion thrusters to boost her off the asteroid and adjust her course mid-flight. She’d never believed in luck.
She coasted silent and graceful past the particle guns in high orbit, like a majestic swan flying on a summer wind. Their sensor arrays were directed out, past her, to the far distant parts of space where a trillion tons of steel were locked in deadly battle. Terris really did wish she could smile at the moment. She was about to have unrestricted access to the biggest communications relay in the star system, able to send out viruses and receive vital intelligence that could cripple the Alliance fleet if placed in the right hands. Terris, confident as ever, knew they would be.
She would make the Neldian Armada burn, and they had no idea she was even coming.
She reached the hypercom station in just under a day, agonizingly slow for a woman like her, hovering just above its surface to avoid triggering pressure sensors. After that, it was simple enough to get inside. Terris found it almost trivial to bypass the airlock sensor grid and trigger the outer bulkhead to open unnoticed, its report to the command room destroyed before it ever arrived. Entering the station itself was easy after that.
Here, there was gravity. She could not hover like she had on the outside of the station. But here, there were no pressure sensors. She really had no need to hover.
The corridor she found herself in was large enough, though nothing like the expansive halls of a dreadnought, and a patrol of marines in powered suits trundled towards her obliviously. Terris had made the right call not to wear a Phantom powered suit. She ducked into an alcove, the chameleon suit concealing her from even their impressive sensor batteries, and they passed by with no clue at all.
Terris made it to the server banks with ease. Most of the hypercom’s security measures took the form of warships in orbit, clustered tightly around the planet to prevent exactly this scenario from happening, but those warships were off waging war. The station defenses were hopeless now that she was actually inside.
The data was encrypted, and she could neither access it nor copy it without potentially fatal consequences, but she wasn’t there to steal data. A brief, milliseconds-long connection to the primary server was all it took to riddle the entire system with custom-tailored computer viruses. The viruses were self-replicating, rather like an electronic version of the biological ones on Earth. They worked similarly, too, meant to latch onto outgoing communications signals and remain inert for a certain amount of time before activating and wreaking havoc across cyberspace.
The program would be scoured from the net in seconds once it began its assault, but it would cause plenty of chaos before then. And, with another critical transmission being scheduled to send at around that time, Terris knew her mostly-ineffective virus attack would be just enough of a distraction to make sure its message was heard.
Terris planned to leave the station in approximately thirty minutes. Shortly after that, the fireworks would begin. It was going to be beautiful.
She heard footsteps. A maintenance worker, no doubt. It was time for her to go. She disconnected from the server, taking pains to hide her involvement, and snuck out of the server room like a ghost in the night.
Next was the transmission array. This room was better-guarded, its door being flanked by marines, but Terris slipped inside by trailing behind an officer as he entered on some unknown pretext. After that, her daring and sleight of hand made sure Admiral Dama’s pre-recorded propaganda transmission was uploaded to the hypercom transmitter. It came with a set of instructions bearing the Admiralty’s seal, changed to be anonymous, to ensure as many people as possible heard his message.
In just under one standard hour, the United Human Alliance would be shaken to its very core. Terris had just made sure of it.
It took longer than she had expected for the door to open again and give her a chance to slip out. Terris had spent that time quite productively, downloading as many incoming and outgoing messages as she could to the internal hard drive just by her spinal cord. Even if they were encrypted, they’d be useful intelligence once Coalition codebreakers took a crack at them.
After that, it was trivial to slip past marine patrols and escape to the hull of the hypercom station. Terris found her ride, an Alliance warship by the name of Brightest Thunder, holding orbit just near the hypercom station. Admiral Dama, even if he was no longer an admiral, still had connections.
She charged her ion thrusters by tapping into the station reactor, an act which did not go unnoticed, but by then it was too late to respond. She had completed her incursion. The damage had been done. Perhaps if the Alliance acted swiftly and accurately, they could undo it, but Terris was a careful woman. She had covered her tracks well.
Waving one final goodbye to the crew of the hypercom station, Terris triggered her thrust pack and shot off into the ink.
“You must be my passenger.” A man in an Alliance captain’s uniform was waiting for her in the Brightest Thunder’s airlock. He wore a helmet and gloves, hermetically sealed to his airtight outfit, so he felt no effects from the vacuum of space. “I was sent by Sector Admiral Sheparda Dama,” he announced after a period of silence, “To transport you and whatever you may have safely to the Coalition fleet.” Nothing. Apart from the dull thudding of the ship’s railgun batteries, firing missiles at range to ward off a strike force of Coalition ships, the airlock was quiet as a ghost.
“You cannot expect me to endanger my life and the lives of my crew without at least some identification that you are who you claim to be!” Silence. Captain Senar Trevy had been standing in that airlock for three and a half hours, while his ship was tasked with screening Neldia and her eighteen billion inhabitants from harm, and he was just now wondering if he had been talking to a ghost.
“I am,” came a voice. Cold. Sterile. Inhuman. Exactly the kind Trevy expected from the secret spies of his former admiral.
“So you are.” Captain Trevy thought for a moment. He cycled the airlock. If his guest held hostile intent, one steel bulkhead would make no difference. “I’ve been stocking the crew with handpicked men and women since I received word of the operation,” he explained as they walked through the ship’s corridors. The crewmen he passed thought him insane. “I can’t vouch for them all, but the ship as a whole will obey me.” No response. Sometimes, Captain Trevy thought himself insane as well.
“This is my personal quarters,” he told the specter, stepping inside and sealing the door behind him. “I must warn you, for your own safety, it would be best not to leave it. The crew are mostly still Alliance loyalists.” He looked around, paying no heed to the decorated furniture or artificial sky, and finally shrugged and sighed. “Are you even here, still?”
Terris decloaked. She stood between him and the door, winged and cloaked in black like a demon of ancient myth. “I am.”
“You’re a black angel.” Senar Trevy, to his credit, kept his composure well. “A spy for the Ierad Republic.” He questioned her purpose here. They both knew it.
“You weren’t told?”
“I was told an alien would be coming aboard, but…” Trevy shrugged again, as if to say ‘what am I supposed to do?’ “The admiral vouched for you. That much is enough for me.” He also knew he had no choice in the matter. From what he knew about black angels, his ship had been lost the moment she boarded.
“I could have impersonated him,” said Terris, voice a perfect replica of Captain Trevy’s own. Even his own mother could not have told the difference. “And I’m trained to lie.” She was testing him, gauging his reaction to assess his personality. She was good at that.
“I could have you screened for deception,” Trevy countered, pointing up at a pearl-sized camera in the ceiling. Terris made a note that it was disabled. “And I could have had the technology officers vet your transmission.”
“I’m trained to lie well.” Terris sat down on Captain Trevy’s bed, a spartan thing compared to the sleeping quarters of most officers. There were no chairs in the room, so her options were few. She took off her helmet and tried to at least appear relaxed. In reality, she was anything but. “It comes with the job, really.”
“Fair,” Trevy chuckled, feigning calm. “I suppose the question now becomes whether or not you can trust me.”
“It’s a safe gamble.” Terris made a mental calculation. It would take her between thirty and fifty seconds to kill Captain Trevy, take the bridge, and vent the ship. That was a very safe gamble. “Besides, that’s what a peace treaty is.” Trevy looked confused. “A leap of faith. You trust your enemy to back their word, and you trust them to trust you as well. If we can’t get along here, can’t put aside our differences to work toward a common goal, then the Alliance will be right. And I hate it when they’re right.”
“I’m speaking to you now because I know they are wrong.” That came as no surprise to either of them. “You know, I was once a foreman of a labor crew in the munitions factories. The most productive unit in my sector.” That one did come as a surprise. “As a foreman, you get leeway to make certain decisions regarding the… well, I suppose they are slaves, under your command. Food intake and the like.” Captain Trevy looked pained when he brought up such memories. Terris wasn’t convinced that was how he really felt. “They use it to weed out any potential xeno sympathizers from the populace. Of course, at the time, I wasn’t so empathetic.”
“So you were a slave driver, and you beat your slaves to make them work. I hope every one of those shells was sabotaged.” Terris’ voice dripped with disdain. She had almost forgotten the Alliance captain was her enemy.
“No, I showed mercy,” Trevy defended himself. “I was generous.” This made Terris reconsider. Perhaps Senar Trevy could be an ally, if not a friend. “I won’t say I was a good man, but I wasn’t cruel. I was practical. Strong, healthy, well-treated workers are more productive than the beaten sacks of flesh in the other factories. My crew’s output was unmatched.”
“And?” Terris cocked her head inquisitively. For a high-ranking officer in the space navy of a genocidal regime, Senar Trevy really did not seem so bad. To be fair, however, she had set the bar pretty low.
“I was investigated for anti-human activity.” Terris could have predicted that. She almost did, too. “They sent me to the fleet, and my labor crew was reacquainted with the energy whips and pain beams.” There was no carrot for an Alliance labor slave. Only the stick. “Their productivity fell thirty percent in the first two weeks alone.” He sounded almost mournful as he said that. He was not lamenting the loss in productivity.
“You see,” said Trevy, “Hatred is not natural. It has to be caused, sustained, nurtured from the day a man is born until the day he dies.” With that, at least, Terris agreed. “And, as you’re about to see, a nation built around cruelty or prejudice cannot sustain itself. It will have to apply pressure to maintain its flawed status quo, like it did with me, and the pressure will build and build until it cannot build anymore.” He tapped a few buttons on the data disc in his hand. It began projecting an image of the battle for Neldia. He placed it on the bed next to Terris. “Now it’s breaking.”
“I wonder if they’ll find themselves in need of more shells.” Terris knew it wasn’t just shells. Every time a slave driver prioritized hatred over hard work, put cruelty over their quota, or even just bowed their head and obeyed the traditional dogma, they hurt the Alliance. Across nine worlds, with billions of slaves not working as they could have, things started to add up. “You know, for a superior species, your fleet is really getting its ass kicked right now. Might want to work on that.”
Captain Trevy nodded. His data disc beeped. He was needed on the bridge. “Agreed,” he said. “I hope this war ends soon, and to our mutual benefit. I’d hate to face you on the battlefield.” He picked up the data disc and turned to leave.
“Oh, forgot to mention, there’s a virus embedded in the transmissions you’ve received. Self-replicating. Nasty piece of work.” Terris shifted a bit in her seat. “Almost forgot about that.”
“Well, better to know now than when it’s activated,” Trevy smiled. “I’ll have Technology Officer Galdir investigate it.” With that, he left. His duty to the Alliance was nonexistent, but the men and women under his command still needed him. He had waited too long in the stateroom.
Terris, with nothing better to do, got to work on cracking the encryption in the transmissions she had copied. She failed. A transmission from deep in unknown space, sent from a dreadnought at the head of a task force known only as the Deep Expedition Fleet, was the only message she could read. Its contents, while troubling, mattered little at the moment. What was far more crucial, however, was the message Terris could not decipher. The military battle plan of Janus Ora’s personal armada.
The battle plan that, when analyzed on a Republic starship, would reveal its terrible secret too late.
The Coalition fleet was walking into a trap.

Freedom National Convention of 1904 (Nominations) American Interflow Timeline
Hamilton Fish II put down Barnum’s note on the speaker’s podium and a silence that spoke louder than screams put the convention to a pause. Fish was Assistant Secretary of State under John D. White during the Barnum Administration, he had worked diligently under the administration and had not lost his prestige even after martial law. Being the son of the most praised president in recent history certainly helped him stay relevent. Even President Custer, the man who claimed Barnum made America “…hell incarnate.”, had been close with Fish. Connecticut as well remained majority Pro-Barnum even after martial law, being the late president’s home state, many there justified his actions of old. Oscar Underwood watched with his colleagues, quickly writing a note to Milford W. Howard who was beside him. Finally, the silence was broken. “To Ms. Barnum! Like her father before her, a defender of freedom and the Freedomites! Cheers!”. Members in the audience would follow suite and cheers of “Barnum! Barnum!” would engulf the building. Howard would open Underwood’s note, “Tarnation! The cycle continues.”. Nearby, James R. Garfield peeked at the note, and looked at Underwood with an expression of morbid agreement, followed by a whisper to Underwood, “We cannot let this happen again.”.
The Convention
Ballots 1st
Joseph Gurney Cannon 82
Henry Cabot Lodge 314
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. 231
William Howard Taft 210
Caroline Barnum 101
Multitudes of delegates would flock to the Barnumite column. These delegates would be ideologically diverse, but united by the same morals. As enthusiasm ran high for the Barnumites, the Freedomite Party elites were in total panic. Past nominee William Pierce Frye and Party House Leader Charles Phelps Taft entered private negotiations to prevent a looming deadlock of the convention. Even Cannon, who was an avid Barnumite supporter back in his day, dismayed at the thought of Barnum’s nomination. Many in the party objected to her nomination due to the fact that she was a woman, which not only would harm her nationally as women weren’t allowed to vote in elections, but many couldn’t fathom a non-male candidate leading the party. Seeing the writing on the wall, Cannon would drop out of the race and tow his support behind Lodge, who them achieved a massive lead in the delegate count. Though a handful of Cannon’s extremely Pro-Barnumite supporters would inadvertently shift their support to Barnum. Supporters of Holmes and Taft remained optimistic, even as their candidates continued to be unenthusiastic about winning the nomination.
Ballots 2nd
Henry Cabot Lodge 380
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. 231
William Howard Taft 211
Caroline Barnum 116
Lodge’s lead widened far beyond the other candidates, yet remained short of the delegates needed to achieve the nomination. Many of the higher ups of the party slyly urged the delegates of the other main candidates to shift to Lodge’s pool, in order to prevent Barnum possibly overtaking Lodge if the opposition rallied to her. Though the majority both Holmes’ and Taft’s delegates refused to back either Lodge or Barnum, instead demanding that the Lodge delegates stand down to support another candidate. Holmes’ campaign manager Byron Gunner offered support to the Lodge delegates if they shifted their to vote to the US Ambassador to Germany George von Lengerke Meyer, known as one of the most popular and respected men in America. Once again however, the Lodge campaign vehemently refused to budge on Lodge’s nomination, even though Lodge himself pragmatically seemed open to the idea of a compromise candidate behind closed doors. The delegates remained at a standstill as cooler heads tried to negotiate some sort of compromise, although it was time for the third ballot before anything could be agreed upon.
Ballots 3rd
Henry Cabot Lodge 378
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. 231
William Howard Taft 211
Caroline Barnum 118
FAILURES! FAILURES! ALL FAILURES!”, chants and laughs the hardened Barnum delegates, who have grown frustrated at the other candidates for their resistance. Nicholas Murray Butler, the President of Columbia University and a steady Barnumite delegates would suddenly gathered attention among his comrades by starting a speech. “What has these people for you? They labeled the old president a clown during his tenure! Yet, observe those in this hall who quarrel among themselves!”. Negotiations were getting desperate, as attendees of the convention began to question if their support was centered on the wrong place. Alas, the murmurs of hall ceased abruptly. A vehicle was heard pulling up to the convention. People move out to clear a path. “It’s Mr. Taft!". William Howard Taft has finally arrived from Fujian after a long journey to Connecticut. Almost immediately he met Lodge to begin a conversation. As the fourth ballot drew near, Taft and Lodge emerged from a smoke-filled room. Taft would pull out of the race and declared his support for Lodge’s nomination. “This decision comes without reluctance. Mr. Lodge has proven himself capable to handle the duties of a leading politician from his work in the Senate. As so he will fulfill the duties of a president.”. Taft’s support did not come so easily however, Lodge made a pledge in exchange for support, he would reform the Bureau of Public Safety and close down their extreme forms of persecutions if he were elected. The Barnum and Holmes delegates could not believe their ears, yet it clear that it was reality.
Ballots 4th
Henry Cabot Lodge 583
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. 235
Caroline Barnum 120
I am truly honored and graced by the position relayed upon me by the Freedom National Convention and to the members of the Freedom Party…
My work in the congressional branch has revealed to me many impartial issues with the handling of the our nation…
The very foundations of American culture relies on its citizens to be the pinnacle of the worldly civilization. A civilization of which we emulate ourselves upon the ever-persecuting and disingenuous world.
We are entering an era fundamentally hostile to our ideals, whereas many seek to strike us at our core, to tear liberty itself from our roots...
From the time of President Clay, to time the President Fish, and to present, we remain steadfast in true American beliefs. From the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, and from the Caribbean to the Great Lakes, we have truly shown that American sovereignty dominates above all…
We delight in our own individual independence and democracy. Far different from the imperial House in Mexico and the colonial empires scattered upon God’s earth.
We shall not be incompetent, we shall not be dismayed, we shall be forever unbounding in our search for freedom!
…and to live without uncertainty forevermore. To God be the glory! May He guide us as we continue to do His work.
Lodge would accept the nomination. The Holmes delegation sigh but reluctantly accepted Lodge’s victory. The Barnum delegation were more willing to drag their feet. Upon Lodge’s mention of Presidents Clay and Fish, an attendee would shout, “Mention Adams and Barnum, you basher! Were they not Freedomites like yourself?!”, followed by sounds of agreement by fellow Barnumites. As the Barumites snubbed him and retreated back into the shadows, progressives still demanded representation in the ballot, and Lodge acknowledged this as a necessary. Lodge would personally ask Holmes if wanted to his running, but Holmes outright turned him down, once again stating he never enthusiastic about the presidency and left his possible nomination to his supporters. Instead Holmes suggested a man that had supported his nomination since the beginning, Senator Garfield. This motion was also backed by major figures such as Representative Underwood and Senator McKinley. Lodge would take this advice, and soon Garfield would accept Lodge’s nomination for the Vice Presidency. Logically, this would be the best choice of Lodge, however as the newly empowered Barnumites stare at him from the shadows, many in the party know that demands for their representation in a new government could not be left ignored.

2024.05.18 17:13 Rainyfriedtofu Nasdaq's rules and Clov Delisting: beating a dead horse deader

Hello Fellow Apes,
I just want to take a quick moment to revisit the Nasdaq's rules and how it would pertain to Clover Healthcare's delisting procedure. I want to do this for two reasons: 1) I want to get ahead of the short sellers' FUD thesis, and 2) I want to revisit the post I made a month ago called "Nasdaq's rules and procedures pertaining to Clover Health." https://www.reddit.com/Healthcare_Anon/comments/1bx2eeg/nasdaqs_rules_and_procedures_pertaining_to_clove
Currently, retail short sellers do not have a basis to spread FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) about Clover Health (CLOV). Additionally, my recent post has highlighted the coordinated efforts to short the stock and brought attention to the fact that a group of us has been reporting activities on the Clover Health subreddit to the SEC and Clover's Investor Relations.
https://www.reddit.com/Healthcare_Anon/comments/1ctvrx7/clov_as_a_meme_clovs_reddit_and_andrews_recent/
In short, our filings with these entities revealed a high correlation (R = 0.97 with a P-value of 0.001) between the "dog whistle" share price and the actual share price of the stock after running statistical tests. Our dataset covered several months. An R value of 0.97 in a correlation test indicates a very strong positive linear relationship between the two variables.
Additionally, contrasting this with the recent meme stock frenzy fueled by figures like Roaring Kitty and Ryan Cohen, hundreds of thousands of people have lost substantial amounts of money due to the activities of retail short sellers. Unlike institutional traders, there are currently no sufficient laws or enforcement mechanisms to regulate these retail short sellers. This lack of oversight prompted us to start documenting and collecting data on Clover Health (CLOV). Our goal is to contribute to the end to such predatory market manipulation behaviors. Companies such as AMC and GME are doomed to fail. However, the case with Clov is different because the company is profitable, sustainable, and gearing up to expand and address the changes to healthcare.

I know what you guys are thinking, "Why are you bringing this up again?" Do you guys remember one of the procedures for Nasdaq's delisting that I wrote a month ago?
"When a company listed on the Nasdaq stock market receives a notice of noncompliance, it means that the company has failed to meet one or more of the Nasdaq's listing requirements. The timeline for potential delisting following a noncompliance notice varies depending on the specific rule that has been violated. Generally, companies are given a compliance period during which they can regain compliance with the Nasdaq's listing standards. This period can range from 30 days to 180 days, or sometimes even longer, especially if the company decides to appeal against the delisting decision or if the noncompliance is related to financial or reporting issues which have specific cure periods.
After the compliance period ends, if the company has not regained compliance or has not made satisfactory progress towards compliance, as determined by the Nasdaq, the exchange may issue a delisting notice. The company can appeal this decision, which may further extend the process. Currently, Clov has several good reasons and evidence to further extend the process. However, I cannot speak on this because of two reasons:
  1. It's uncertain whether Clover Health's Investor Relations (IR) team will instruct their legal team to formally present their reasons for noncompliance to Nasdaq. They have legitimate reasons, including being targeted by retail short sellers, but I'll not delve into those details in this post.
  2. Considering Clover Health's financial situation, as evidenced by their 10-K reports and their operational runway, it's possible they may not need to utilize the full 180-day grace period before appealing Nasdaq's notice. Moocao plans to conduct a detailed analysis (DD) of their financial statements, which suggest the company is in a strong position. The launch of their Software as a Service (SaaS) platform and the anticipation of approximately $100 million in revenue could potentially disrupt the strategies of retail short sellers, possibly leading to their financial downturn. However, the outcome of the first quarter's earnings report (Q1 ER) remains to be seen, presenting Clover Health with two potential paths forward. I'm only speculating SaaS contracts because why would you hire SaaS staff, request to generate more shares to pay those staff, and not have work or activities for them to do right now? This is a lot of money to spend on something that have no contracts. Therefore, I speculate they will announce their SaaS the same way that they announced their home care last year."
Looking at the current situation, Clover Health has ample time to comply with Nasdaq's regulations for several key reasons--almost unlimited:
  1. Strong Financial Health: The company is performing exceptionally well and is far from facing bankruptcy. Despite this, short sellers have excessively shorted the stock, pushing it to levels suggesting financial distress, and they have coordinated efforts to sway public sentiment negatively. https://www.reddit.com/Healthcare_Anon/comments/1cp786f/clover_q1_2024_earnings_analysis_earnings_call10q/
  2. Proactive Measures: Clover Health is actively working to enhance shareholder value, including implementing a share buyback program.
  3. Prepared for Appeals: We have already prepared the necessary reports for Clover Health to file an appeal with Nasdaq, should it fail to meet compliance standards within 180 days. However, given the company's current trajectory, it's unlikely that an appeal will be necessary as we anticipate Clover Health will regain compliance soon.
It's important to note that the likelihood of Clover Health facing delisting or needing to perform a reverse stock split is minimal. In a somewhat ironic twist, we owe a debt of gratitude to the retail short sellers. Their consistent manipulation of the stock has inadvertently provided crucial evidence. If they hadn't driven the stock price below bankruptcy levels and engaged in aggressive trading strategies against market-making algorithms, we might not have identified key areas to focus on. As the saying goes, sometimes not getting what you want can indeed be a blessing.
I'll provide a more detailed write-up later, but for now, I wanted to reassure you that the potential for Clover Health's delisting or reverse stock split is very low. The delisting and reverse stock split are the only kind of theses I anticipate the brigades can make. Otherwise, the only thing that they have are memes.

2024.05.18 14:38 ByfelsDisciple I know my parents practiced demonlogy, but I never expected it to haunt me after it killed them.

The house stood by itself, certainly holding darkness within. I had no doubt that inside, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone, just like any other house.
I knew it was not like any other house. My dead parents would be proud.
Actually, I had no idea whether they’d be proud. Dead things take on a life of their own in our imaginations, and become far more than they ever could have been under different circumstances.
I pulled the jacket tighter. There was no point in trying to be discreet, but I’d rather be the weirdo in an unnecessary trench coat than the weirdo who was trying to hide a weapon.
I made my way around the structure and to the back door without anyone noticing. That wasn’t a good thing. We have a way of paying attention to everything except what’s important.
Grabbing the knob with a gloved hand, I found it to be locked. This was hardly my first time breaking into a house that didn’t want me, though, so I was inside a few seconds later.
I didn’t like how quiet the kitchen was. It felt like a presence, as though it was listening. A stifling flutter of vertigo and nausea tickled me as I waded through it. Turning into the hallway, it got worse, like I was diving underwater too quickly. My head spun.
The sensation emanated from the last room on the left; even without light, sound, or smell, it was overwhelming in the absence of what I should have felt. A sudden hitch pulled in my chest: I really didn’t want to go into the final room of this suffocating house in the middle of the night. I didn’t want to be alone in the dark.
I wished I had someone in my life to disappoint. Maybe if I did, I wouldn’t have gone forward.
And so I found myself slowly stepping around the bedroom door, telling myself that I was ready to face whatever lay on the other side.
I wasn’t ready.
I didn’t learn about demons until I was grown up. While some people can see the demons inside of us, they like to stay hidden.
Not this one. It stood at the far end of the shadowy room, nine feet tall, curly goat’s horns atop the humanoid feline face of a man. Pugilist arms drooped at both sides, hanging to knees supported by cloven feet. Its tail twitched in time to the flicker of its forked tongue.
A little girl, maybe ten years old, trembled beneath her blanket, her skin alabaster white as her large eyes stared at the nightmare incarnate.
Fear chilled my blood. No matter how many times I saw the manifestation of everything vile in my mind, the terror never went away. Fear of death only stops when we’re dead.
The demon dropped its jaw – five inches, eight inches, a foot, even more – to reveal canines that dripped from infected gums to far below its jaw. It lowered its face to the terrified girl. She had nowhere to go: her bed was in the corner, and the bedroom had no windows.
“Stop.”
They both turned to me. I could smell the thing’s breath from across the room; it reeked like rotting fish had been washed using other rotten fish.
I reached into my jacket and grabbed the handle.
Our demon huffed, sending swirlies of exhaled air that threatened to melt the wallpaper. I held my breath and pointed the weapon. The thing saw how much the tip trembled, no matter how I tried to steady my hand. It smiled.
I blinked rapidly.
When it saw that I wasn’t going to move, the goat demon lurched toward me.
It had expected me to step back. When I didn’t do what it wanted, the thing got angrier. It lumbered forward, rising to its full height.
It’s impossible to appreciate just how tall nine feet is until a monster is standing right in front of you with its tongue writhing like a tortured snake. But still, I didn’t move.
Yet it knew I was afraid. The thing could smell it on me, wafting like a freshly opened Octomore whisky that had all the subtlety of a wrecking ball on fire.
I raised the handle higher. The shaky tip of my sword was now just below its chin.
This thing had the power to crush me.
“Run away.”
I peeked around the demon’s hyper-muscular frame to see the girl staring at me, the blanket pulled up to her eyes.
“You’re telling me that I should run away because it knows I’m afraid?”
She nodded, her black hair bobbing furiously.
The demon dropped its impossibly wide jaw and lowered it toward me. I could see straight past its uvula into a pulsing esophagus.
The exit was right behind me.
“I am afraid. Which is precisely why I can’t run.” I dropped the sword to the ground with a clang. Staring up at the monster, I spoke louder. “This demon’s name is Doubt. It lives among us because it will never go hungry in the presence of people.”
Its teeth stopped half an inch from my cheek. I tried not to cry. “This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt.”
It didn’t move. The putrid mouth still was sitting, still was sitting just beside the bedroom door.
And yet I stayed.
It held for a few seconds longer. And then it screamed.
The thing punched a hole in the wall with a single blow that sent shock waves through the air and jolted the girl into a standing position. I wanted to run away, to cry, to do anything but stay in place, but I learned long ago that we’re often strongest in our moments of weakness.
So I waited for Doubt to tire of us, since I knew it couldn’t hurt me as I was.
Finally it subsided, heaving as it stared, content for the moment to lurk in the background so that I would always know of its presence.
The girl, still trapped in the corner of the room, glared back and forth between us. “Who are you?” she asked in a voice just above a whisper.
I had to swallow three times before I was sure I could speak without crying. “My name is Peter,” I responded, “and I’m a demon hunter like my parents before me.”
“How – how do you kill this one?” she asked, teetering on the edge of complete panic.
I raised an eyebrow. “You want to be rid of it entirely?”
She wrapped her arms around a white sleeping gown, looking ghostly, and nodded.
“The only certain cure is dying,” I answered. “Otherwise, he’ll always know how to find you.” I plucked my parents’ sword from the ground. “In the meantime, try letting go of a weapon. Most people don’t know how not to use violence.” I held out my hand, inviting her to escape.
“Is it safe?” she whispered.
“No.”
She glanced at the demon once more.
“Stop staring. It only makes the thing stronger.”
She continued to stare before leaping from the bed and trotting over toward me and slipping on a pair of shoes by the door. “We’re going away, aren’t we?”
I looked down at her. “You know why it’s hunting you?”
She looked back up with big, brown eyes that only seemed innocent on the surface. “They’ve come for the most dangerous weapon in the world.”
The words sent chills down my back. I didn’t need to affirm what we both knew.
“It’s time to leave.”
She turned at my words, and we walked side-by-side down the hallway, putting the room behind us.
We couldn’t put it behind us. I felt the demon’s first step, and I heard the second. Each footfall of ours was met by two more, just behind us.
“Is it following us?” she whispered.
I clenched my fist. “Don’t look back. Whatever you do, don’t look back.”
Hot, wet breath caressed my neck as the hair on the back of my head was graced lightly by what felt like a forked tongue.
“How can we live like this?” she asked. Her cheeks were shiny.
“Well, you never know when life is gonna twist the story like an eager titty.”
We froze. Standing before us in the kitchen was a gray-haired woman in her sixties taking a long drag on a cigarette. The skin around her eyes wrinkled in a way that made me think she’d spent a lifetime laughing at people facing the consequences of what seemed like a good idea at the time.
“Sorry, Sugar. I sometimes forget to watch my fucking mouth when kids are around.”
A million questions raced through my head at the stranger’s presence, but only one reached my lips. “Can you see what’s behind me?”
She looked between the two of us, one eyebrow raised like a skeptical proctologist hearing the same lie a hundredth time.
“So it’s visible to you,” I pressed, my pulse quickening. “Do you know what it is?”
She took another extensive drag on the cigarette, clearly more interested in nicotine than self-preservation. “No, but if I could scrub my clothes on its stomach, I’d never use a washing machine again.”
For the first time since leaving the room, I looked over my shoulder.
It was an inch away. The disgusting pubic stubble on its chin raked my neck.
“Someone is after her,” I explained to the stranger.
“Someone is after you, Peter.”
A shudder went through my bones upon hearing my name. “Why – who the hell are you?”
She took the deepest pull yet on a cigarette that was almost out, closing her eyes before answering. “My name is Patricia Barnes. I like to think of myself as the reciprocation of every testicular-based mistake.”
I shook my head. There was no way I could even attempt to understand what the hell she was saying. “We need to leave. Now.”
The little girl looked up at me. “What’s going to happen?”
The first thing that parents learn is how to lie to their children, and the last thing that children do is learn just how much their parents were lying. That’s the boundary of adulthood, and our only unifying feature is that we’re not ready for it.
“Kid, this is going to suck,” I promised. The demon wormed his tongue into my ear. I ignored it. “What’s your name?”
“Gwen,” she answered. I thought she was going to hold my hand. She didn’t.
“The sun’s about to rise,” I went on. “We need to be gone by then.” I opened the back door once again, and the two of them followed me out. I didn’t check for the demon, because I was looking forward.
“You found me,” I said to Patricia once we were standing in the still night air. “They’ll find us soon.”
She snorted. “You were only looking at what I wanted you to see.”
I turned to her and folded my arms as she lit another cigarette.
“What happened to the last one I was smoking?” she asked through clenched teeth.
I shook my head, ready to turn away from her.
She yanked it from her mouth and blew a long stream into the night air. “I set it down just before crossing the room to turn on the pilot light.”
I opened my mouth to respond.
Then I froze, staring.
“I left it on high, Sugar. You’d better run.”
I grabbed Gwen’s hand and sprinted into the trees behind her house. Patricia was surprisingly fast in her high-heeled boots and long skirt; it was clear that she’d been mentally preparing for this.
We were hiding behind the trees when the explosion sent shock waves through us. I turned back to stare at the wreckage. “Can anyone else see it?” I breathed. “I’ve watched far worse things that no one noticed.”
Before I received an answer, silhouettes moved against the flames. Two men stared up at the crimson night. One paced back and forth, clearly pissed, while the other stood placidly with his arms on his hips.
“God,” I whispered, “they were outside this whole time, waiting for us.” I turned to stare at Patricia, who was recovering from her sprint with closed eyes and another inhalation of cigarette smoke, before looking at Gwen. She seemed so vulnerable, pale almost to the point of glowing in the first gray rays of a dawning sun.
Patricia sighed. “Do you know how many cigarettes I’ve gone through explaining things to men who should have figured out my motivations the 1,913th time I made it obvious?”
I folded my arms. “That’s a random number.”
She coughed. “Not if you put together all the clues. Look, sometimes memories stick better when I slap the listener around a little. Do you need a good smacking?”
“No.”
“Offer’s on the table.” She dropped her cigarette onto the dirt, crushing it beneath her boot as she lit another. Patricia closed her eyes and sighed in contentment. “Are you ready for the truth?”
“No one is.”
She opened her eyes and cackled. “Good boy.” Looking up toward the two shadows, one still pacing, the other statue-still, she pursed her lips. “They’re not going to give up the most dangerous weapon in the world that easily,” she pressed, eyebrows raised.
I looked at her, she looked at me, and I think that we finally understood one another.
“There’s no going back,” she continued, her voice eerily calm. “Peter, this is just the beginning.”

2024.05.18 11:56 evanechis How do I reach the other side?

I can see items on the trunk but I have searched this cave multiple times and couldn’t find a way to get there. This place is Altus Tunnel for anyone who is wondering. There was a huge spider monster on the wall firing magical arrows non-stop but I already killed it.

2024.05.18 06:45 Still_Needleworker11 You confess to your Drider Knight [F4M] [Wholesome] [Confession] [Forbidden love] [Kissing] [Childhood Friends]

Context: You prepare to confess to your Royal Knight, despite certain "controversies".

[Scene opens up in the hall]
***
[SFX: Door opening and armor clanking]
"You summoned me, your Highness?"
[You nod]
"Is it something important?"
[You nod again]
"If that is the case, what seems to be the problem?"
[You ask if she could talk to you normally]
"I'm sorry your highness. I don't think I can necessarily do that right now. While I am still on duty."
[Pause]
"If that is all, shall I return to my-"
[You ask her to stop]
"Huh? Wha-what's the matter my prince?"
[You ask her to please talk to you as you use to]
"Eh? Talk to you as I use to? D-do you really want that? Especially Now of all times?"
[You nod]
"I mean...if It's all right with you can I shut the door first?"
[You nod]
"Thank you."
[SFX: Door shutting]
"Now tell me, why did you want me to talk to you as we did back when we were kids?"
[You say that you want her honest opinion]
"*Snicker* My honest opinion? Forgive me my pri-I mean um...anyways. When have you ever known me for not giving my honest opinion?"
[Pause]
"If it will please you however, I will give you my honest opinion."
[You ask her if you are a good man]
"Are you...a good man? Well, if I were to compare all the men in this kingdom; I'd say you have a great heart."
[You say that isn't what you mean]
"I know, I know. It's just...So often people overlook that characteristic that makes them good. In my humble opinion, it's what separates you from monsters and creatures."
[You mention that she is a monster]
"Okay, I'll grant you this. Coming from a Drider, it may seem odd when I talk about humanity in such a peculiar way."
[Pause]
"I should mention though, that other monsters and creatures do envy the hearts of humanity. Not to mention their compassion."
[You chuckle a little]
"Well, it may seem funny. However, what I have notice is that humans are very...nice."
[Pause]
"Sure, they may have a few...bad eggs if you'll pardon the phrase. I don't think however that deteriorates their species as a whole."
[Pause]
"I find that your heart is one of the most pure of them all. Your honest but kind, firm but fair, and your people love how you are willing to sacrifice everything for them. Remember the flood a few years ago?"
[Pause]
"You never hesitated to forfeit your rooms for the sake of your subjects. Even willing to offer them supplies so they can rebuild their homes."
[SFX: crawling closer]
"If I don't mind asking, where did that question come from?"
[Your surprised that she asked that so late in]
"Forgive me, old habits tend to die hard. While training to become a knight, I know I mustn't overstep my boundaries. Even for a childhood friend like you."
[You confess that you have a crush on someone]
"*Smug* Oh? Do tell."
[You explain the situation]
"Ah, I see. One of those "Forbidden loves" eh? Two souls, bound by love. Never meant to be together because of societal norms."
[She laughs a little]
"Forgive me for overstepping my boundaries, it's just...any girl would be lucky to have you as their beloved."
[You ask if she found anyone]
"Huh? Me? D-did I find anyone? Kind of a out of the blue question. Don't you think?"
[Pause]
"*Sigh* I guess your worried if your the only one who has a crush on someone. Fearing I might end up alone."
[Pause]
"Anyways, It's not like I have a massive amount of "Suitors" lined up to date a Drider. Even other driders tend to fear females."
[You ask why?]
"Well, I'll answer the first question first. It takes a special kind of person to like spiders, let alone spider creatures like me."
[You ask if she is being treated poorly]
"On the contrary your Highness. When my family and our tribes arrived in your kingdom I was told by my mother; Don't take anything to heart my child. Some people just need to know the "real you" before they like you."
[Pause]
"If anything, I get kind of annoyed by the people tip-toeing to try to prevent any offense to me."
[Pause]
"I guess that's why I like the children of this kingdom. They speak of the heart. Not knowing any social graces."
[You apologize]
"Now, don't you go starting to apologize for them. I actually like it. The curious questions that they have."
[You ask for examples]
"I'm afraid that some of these questions cannot be repeated to such parties of nobility. I'm sorry."
[Pause]
"However, it's not all bad. Some are quite cute, like "Is it true that your species get drunk off of coffee?" To witch I reply, "Depending on the brew and spider species."
[She chuckles and sighs]
"The men however...trying to find the right partner can have it's complications. Drider woman can be very strong willed."
[Pause]
"I guess that's why Drider men often have issues with us as well."
[You mention your not that kind of "Strong willed"]
"Thanks your grace, I do appreciate it. I just want them to know that even though I'm a knight; It doesn't mean I don't want to be looked at like a woman."
[Pause]
"So anyways, what is this crush is like?"
[You mention she isn't human]
"She isn't human huh? I guess I can see what that would be a little...controversial. *Gasp* Don't tell me; you fell for a Drider?!"
[You nod]
"Oof man, I really feel bad for you. I mean, if it was a Harpy, a Centaur, or heck even a Lamia I can see you maybe salvaging this. But a Drider?!"
[Pause]
"I mean, all I got to say is good luck on convincing your family that this is a good idea."
[Pause]
"I bet your mother would have a fit knowing that the next in line had fallen for a Drider. *Snickers* I can only imagine what the lords must think of it too."
[Pause]
"So anyways, who's the lucky girl?"
[You point to her]
"Huh? M-me? Surely you jest."
[You shake your head]
"Oh...um...I...Well, you see-"
[You ask if she feels the same]
"Huh? Do I feel the same?"
[You nod]
"If I was being perfectly honest. I can't deny that I do have feelings for you."
[You smile]
"However, I wouldn't want you to risk everything all for the possibility that this might not work out."
[Pause]
"If it is all right with you, I might need some time to make sure that this isn't a grave mistake."
[You ask if she hates you]
"Of course I don't hate you, your Highness. I just don't want you to regret this decision later. I think it would also be best to think it over on how to break the news to some people."
[You ask who?]
"Well, for starters; the lords. I don't know how they would take the news if you decide to be with me, instead of a princess."
[Pause]
"*Sigh* The taboo of dating a knight wouldn't be bad enough. Just the idea of seeing you lose your title would be too grim for me."
[You ask why?]
"Well, just between us; The tribes that I was a part of that moved into your kingdom really admire you."
[Pause]
"The fact that you address every Drider, Harpy, Lamia, and Centaur as if they were all your subjects. All of them you treat equally."
[Pause]
"I guess it is something that I as well my lord greatly admire you for."
[Pause]
"I do have to ask though, what was it about me that made you fall in love with me?"
[You say her courage and loyalty]
"My courage and loyalty? I mean, other guards and nights are just as loyal as I-"
[You insist that they are not]
"R-really. If that's the case could there be any-"
[You say she is also beautiful inside and out]
"H-Huh?! You think I'm beautiful inside and out?"
[You nod]
"W-with all do respect if you keep this up, I might end up falling in love with-"
[SFX: Kissing]
"Y-you kissed me."
[You apologize]
"No need to apologize, but judging by that kiss you must really do care about me."
[You nod]
"*giggle* Perhaps if that is the case, we could try to see if this works. I do have to admit however, if you would be so bold as to keep this our little secret?"
[You ask why]
"Well, if only to keep the illusion that you might of not found your one true beloved. If only to stay face."
[Pause]
"Trust me your highness, if you were to take action too early...Imagine what your subjects would say or think."
[You say you don't care about that]
"You may not care, but I do. I don't want to see you throw away all of this, in the unlikely hope that we might have a "Happily ever after". I fear that even "True love" couldn't overcome this. Especially if it is rushed."
[Pause]
"However, if it would put your mind at ease; perhaps you should mention this to any lord that you trust fully and completely, when it comes to subtilty."
[Pause]
"At least do this for me, your Highness?"
[You nod]
"Thank you."
[SFX: Kissing]
"Just to motivate you to keep your word."
[You ask if she feels the same way]
"I think it is appropriate to mention this after that discussion."
[You nod]
"Thank you for honoring this request. Now, if that is all; I shall see myself out."
[She kneels]
"Good day your highness."
[She walks away as it fades to black]
[To be continued...?]

2024.05.18 02:36 Confident-Turnover-2 "The Pale Princess and Six Pygmies Vol. 1" tells us that Sun is absent.

I was wondering why no one was discussing the important depictions in this book.So I created a post to share my thoughts and have a discussion.
*apologize if this post is already duplicated.

Before "examining" this post...

  • If you want to figure it out on your own, there are many spoiler.
  • This post is free any leaks or datamine. (and I don't like leaks / datamine)
  • I'm born and raised in Japan. So, my English (and translate) is Poor.
  • My goal is to dismantle language and cultural barriers.
  • The references in this post provide a comprehensive perspective.
  • While it's important to check the compatibility of the "Metaphor jigsaw puzzle's" pieces,But it's also a good idea to consider "full picture" that will emerge once the pieces are assembled.
  • Don't need read all of it. Focus on what you feel you need to "learn".
  • We have seen the same journey. Therefore, I will not describe what I believe to be "Sus".But, if you want, you can ask me questions or discuss with me. Let's try to solve this together.

Let's start gracefully! ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ

Q1: Why is the moon unable to be destroyed?

"...The only thing she could not bear was the occasional ray of moonlight that made it through the clouds."
As you know, moonlight reflected sunlight, and to our knowledge, solar flares are much more powerful than moonlight. But the book says that "moonlight penetrated" the thick cloud cover.
Strange, isn't it? I know this book is a fairy tale, **but where was the Sun we see in Teyvat today?**If the sun existed, Why couldn't sunlight penetrate it...?
It goes without saying that "the forest" is dark during a SolaLunar eclipse. Is this book depicting a different location than Teyvat? or referring to a "Moon catastrophe"?
What is the black circle blocking \"Aureola\"?
Come to think of it, Teyvat people can't use them "self elements"...even though they can use giant hilichurl. And those who possess vision seem to merge with the elements...
I'm into all sorts of cool things. Sipping a nice cold drink, sitting in a canyon feeling the biting wind howl past my face, or diving into the lake at the foot of Dragonspine... Waiting for you to stroll by unsuspectingly, so I can sneak up behind you and drag you down into the icy depths...
— Eula/Voice-Overs "Hobbies"
Is it truly a different place? No. I don't think so...
The samurai picked a husk of a leaf. It crumbled into dust immediately, floating away on the wind."It seems like the life has literally been wrung out from this place."
— Princess Mina of the Fallen Nation Vol.3
The nation of Kogami — a lifeless wasteland as far as the eye could see.
The barren fields stretched out into the horizon around a large sand dune where the two samurai faced each other.
One of them is our protagonist, and shall be named the green samurai to distinguish him from his compatriot. The other is a new arrival to the story. We shall name him the pale samurai.
— Princess Mina of the Fallen Nation Vol.4
At the top of the Sky Tower, the samurai and princess argued in futility, as if no one was watching.Well, I say that, but in fact there were quite a few other folk about dressed in the garb of onmyouji.
"So, uh, as you all know, Nakura's Hex was originally created to preserve the vitality of a world that was slowly declining."
As if unable to stand the conversation—and also to push the plot forward in their role as an NPC—the oldest onmyouji finally spoke.
"And that which can utilize this stored vitality..."
"So, could you get these thoughts out of your head?"
The samurai didn't seem to have heard the wizened onmyouji at all.How long was this farce going to continue?
— Princess Mina of the Fallen Nation Vol.5
"Outlanders, your journey ends here""Who're you!?""The sustainer of heavenly principles. The arrogation of mankind ends now!"
— Archon Quest "Wanderer's Trail"
This book tells we about the ancient age of Teyvat I think.
Note1: " " → "Ko-gami-koku" It's a coined word. "BUT…"Note2: " " → "Na-ku-ra". It's a coined word, but it may be meant to imply a puzzle like this.
Let's remember what Morpheus (movie The Matrix) and Baizhu Story said...
And analyze the meaning of Kanji word \"網羅\" and term \"Rukkha's lines\".
Never forget this, Traveler. We must be record
Q1 TIPS: >! If there is a lunar eclipse, the moonlight forest will disappear.!<

Q2:Why does moonlight change people's appearance?

...Here, no light touched the earth, nor did a single tree grow, and there was no life here but the horrendous denizens of the dark.
Did the people live in the Moonlight Forest have plant-like properties and photosynthesize? XDBecause that's strange. Why is it called "Forest" in a place where no plants grow?
As per \"Norse mythology's design\", the vines are now entwined...
"EX CULMINE LUCS IN MAGNO ELEMENTORUM LUX SE EFFUNDAT IN MENTES DEI"
「世にこれほどの色彩があっただろうか。誰一人として、染まらぬ者はいない」「白色よりも天雲に似て、金色よりも太陽に似る。それは君の瞳に落ちて、孤独な心に再び降り注ぐのだ。」
"Has there ever been such a spectrum in the world? Not a single untouched thing remains.""Resembling more the celestial clouds than white, and akin to the sun more than gold.It falls into your eyes, pouring once more into a solitary heart."

"He fell right to the ground from the highest point of the opera house...No one could hope to survive that fall — not without a Vision, at least."
—Lyney's Story Quest "Felis Fuscus" Chapter: Act I "The Forgotten Thief".
"Pale Princess" and Teyvat seem to have a biological commonality of "sensitivity to light".
Interesting**, isn't it?**It seems to me that the creatures of Teyvat, including humans, are like deep-sea fish.
So, as you know in the lore, "bread crumbs" are often dropped about being turned "upside down".The metaphor of sea is that of Vishap, the subterranean fish, and fish in the sky.
If "heaven" and "earth" are being "switched", what does it mean?
(心 Kokoro + 海 Umi = \"Kokomi\") got sick state on Roller coaster and dropped a Lore bomb.
Ancient art depicts the scaleless serpent as "Ouroboros",and the coral-adorned serpent as "Orobashi%20is%20a%20general)".

Dossier serial numbers shall no longer use the categories Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon, which used the ancient Watatsumi tongue.
— The Byakuyakoku Collection Vol.4 "Bathysmal Vishap Experimental Records" Note: "海神"
君は天地の外の者だ。この倒錯した世界に対する私の審判は、君が見届けるといい。You are from outside heaven and earth. I hope you will witness my judgment against this perverted world.

— Neuvillette/Voice-Overs "Witness"

It does not have to be \"bagua\", but other knowledge would make it difficult to see the connection to \"Byakuyakoku Collection\".
The "real-life references" are like a mirror image, "crossing the boundary and inverted"...
If you lie on the grass, you can feel the heartbeat of the world.
— Ganyu/Voice-Overs "Attentive"
Do you \"see\" that...? Can you \"hear\" this...?
Now, You just "win". XD XD XD (R.I.P. Halfdan...)
\supplement :No idea how North and South should be interchanged, as the specific conditions for crossing the boundary and* switching sides are unclear to me. (I don't know anything!)
But assuming that we are "following the course of human history", 原神 is more likely to connect the (southern / northern) hemisphere mythology.
Q2 TIPS: Plants sprouted where the shined. And "ELEMENTORUM">! is like a "Thermal energy" and "Hyperbaric medicine" effect.!<

Q3:What is "Edge of the Forest"?

Now, similar to my Perinheri comments, (No, no need search now)I propose some interpretations using cultural memes regarding the metaphor.
"造化は神秘を隠し、太陽と月は吉凶を示さん。""三隅は闇を切り離し五聖は虚空に隠れん。"
"The Creator conceals mysteries, while Sun and Moon reveal omens of fortune and misfortune.""The three corners separate the darkness, and the five saints hide within the void."
「宇宙には、始まりも終わりもない。かつての大地もそうだった。ただ、私たちにとっては何の意味もない。私たちを育んだ土は、もう終わりなき永遠とは関係がないのだから。」
"The universe has no beginning or end. It was true of the earth in same past. But it doesn't mean anything to us.The soil that nourished us is no longer associated with endless eternity."
— The Byakuyakoku Collection Vol.1 JP-Text Sage Aberaku
So said the Mistress of Pushpavatika:
"O wise Princess, you have answered my first riddle.""But from the stars to the abyss, many inexplicable secrets still exist in the world."
"O wise Princess, if your wisdom is truly as the legends of the people say,""Please answer my second riddle as you did the first."
"What rises from the earth, then descends from the sky,""No one has seen it, yet it sees all,""As above, so below, and as at the bottom, so too, the top,""Yet only top to bottom may be, and never bottom to top?"
That princess of (...) answered thusly:
"You speak of the universal law created in heaven, the divine laws established in the beginning.""No one has seen the eternal law, yet it governs all.""One may only bow down and worship Vaana of the heavenly spirits — no arrogation, deception, or trickery is permitted.""If one dares to imitate the forbidden arts, only calamity awaits at the edge of divine knowledge."
— Scroll of Streaming Song Vol.2
我は光の父であり、闇の子である。我は無翼の鳥であり、地から天へと昇る。我を見たものは涙を流すが、哀愁はない。そよ風に吹かれ、生まれて間もなく消えてゆく
I am the Father of Light and the Child of Darkness.I am the wingless bird, rising from the earth to heaven. Those who see me weep, but there is no sorrow.Softly winds in the breeze,-.%20In%20Western%20philosophy), soon after birth... shall be gone.
— The Byakuyakoku Collection Vol.5 JP-Text "Question 5"
This refers to the topic of \"impermanence\" (\"無常\" / \"もののあはれ\").
Therefore, the answer to this riddle \"must be\" derived by you. It cannot be given by others...
Frankly, I was concerned that there was no discussion of
why it was necessary to "separate the darknesss"?Why did Phanes have to create Teyvat in the first place?
What is "darkness"?
etc.
Eggs are \"cradle of life\". It's like a \"womb\"...
Although my personal conclusions will not be revealed in this post,I will employ the same strategies as 原神 to present them... so I hope my guess is wrong. ;(*It's just a metaphor, Traveler, not an answer. That world seems even harsher, I think...
Does the \"soul\" exist? Or is it just \"reverberation\"?
LAST TIPS: "もののあはれ".
Here, I'll end by telling you that the entire depiction of 原神 is a microcosm of a worldview, and then stop writing.

Quoted works List

Glory through Dingir to the efforts of the wise. many thanks.
I look forward to seeing you in discussion!. XD

2024.05.17 17:57 hanban0112 Trying to consolidate debt to lower monthly minimum payments

So long story short: my husband and I have gotten into a significant amount of credit card debt. He lost his job and after struggling to find a new one, found one which he makes great money. I am still currently and student and work full time but my pay is not anything spectacular as I work in a school that’s pretty low income. The minimums alone on our debt is killing us. I have been trying to figure out how to consolidate our debt that doesn’t involve debt relief or bankruptcy. They always tell us that the income isn’t a problem it’s the amount of debt to that income. Our credit isn’t great thanks to this whole situation so finding a company that will actually work with us, including credit unions is few and far between. I have student loans which are still in their grace period because I’m currently still a student. But they still show up on my credit report, even after I have proved to companies the loans are in their grace still. Does anyone have similar experience? I just don’t want my credit to plummet.

2024.05.17 15:26 duddlered Grimoires & Gunsmoke: Operation Tolkien Ch. 56

Knight Captain Shaw barked orders at his men like a rabid dog. His voice was hoarse and edged with panic as exhaustion gnawed at his already frayed mind. His body became heavy, and his thoughts became a haze of fatigue, but he continued to push his men and himself relentlessly throughout the night.
"Pick up the damned pace!" he roared, his spittle flying. “I’ll flog any ye fucks that think to dally!”
That foul Dark Elf had said they'd have an entire day to rest, but Shaw wasn’t going to trust the word of some knife-eared prick that gobbled down a bigwig Noble’s dick as far as he could the devious bastard. However, his men were weary and weren’t keen on complying. Shaw could understand the sentiment, but they didn’t know what he knew. They haven’t experienced the backstabbing nature and the insidious double-speak that came with upper society.
He hand to make them comply through any means necessary, even if it meant taking a head or two.
Shaw's eyes darted nervously between the men scurrying around and the eastern night sky, searching for any sign of that damned dragon. The sudden appearance and subsequent disappearance had left him unnerved. Usually, something that big and that old was accompanied by entire cities being put to the torch just to make a point, and the fact that Shaw’s Lord was executed and labeled as a traitor didn’t bode well. The feathered bitch wasn’t fucking around, and she was out for blood.
"But Capt'n Shaw, the Dark Elf, said we had an entire day to rest," a young, newly anointed knight ventured. His voice was barely above a whisper, heavy with the unspoken fear they all felt.
"Are ye an imbecile, lad!?" Shaw snapped, grabbing the man by the collar of his shirt and yanking him closer. "Do ye trust a snake with yer neck!?" He jabbed a calloused finger at the knight's chest, spraying him with spittle. "That dark-skinned bastard will sell us out the moment it suits him! We march NOW, or that piece of shite will label us as traitors as well and have that damned monster breathing fire upon us before dawn!”
Shaw released the young knight with a final shove, sending him stumbling backward. Paranoia flickered in the Knight Captain’s eyes as his hand twitched toward the hilt of his sword, itching for the comfort of solid steel in a world gone mad. Every rustle of leaves, every distant animal cry, sent shivers down his spine, and his gaze darted back to the horizon with a desperate intensity.
"MOVE!" he bellowed, his voice cracking with strain. "We cannot afford to linger here another moment! Get those wagons loaded and those supplies packed! We must be gone before dawn breaks!"
The men and women of the camp scrambled to obey, and as Shaw watched them, his jaw set, his body thrumming with restless energy. This was no longer simply a means to collect tribute and supply the war effort – it was a desperate flight for survival.
He cast a glance over his shoulder, half-expecting that Dark Elf and his shadows to be watching them with their dark eyes gleaming with cold amusement. To Shaw’s relief, the bastard and his minions were nowhere to be seen. But after seeing just how long it was taking for their departure to take shape, an uneasy feeling formed in the pit of his stomach.
Wagons were being overloaded with barrels of grain, crates of hardy fruits and vegetables, and cages of squawking chickens. Larger, bulkier beasts like the lean, razor-fanged worgs used as war mounts were being prepped by riders, and the plump, docile, shaggy horned beasts that were bred for burden – were not even ready. The first light of the morning was coming soon, and they were nowhere near ready for departure.
"By the Emperor's balls..." Shaw swore under his breath. At this rate, they'd be lucky to move more than a kilometer before the afternoon. Fury surged through him like a wildfire. This was no army, no fighting unit – it was a disorganized mob.
With a snarl, he stomped towards a group of soldiers struggling to hoist a massive crate of chickens, clucking away, onto the back of a groaning wagon. "Leave it!" The Knight Captain barked, his voice a whipcrack across the hushed camp. "Leave all of it! Gods damn it all!"
The soldiers stopped, their eyes wide with shock. "B-But Captain," one stammered, "The Count–."
"The Counts DEAD ya fool!!" Shaw roared, kicking the crate. It slid with a thud, spilling its precious contents across the dirt. "We're leaving this wrong shit behind if we want to see another sunrise!"
And just as those words left the good Knight Captain’s mouth, dawn's first rays painted the eastern horizon, causing his face to fall. They were nowhere near ready. Yet, even as panic began to gnaw at him, a screeching cry pierced the air as a chorus of shrieks echoed from the skies.
Shaw spun around, his heart pounding in horror, thinking it was a dragon, but instead, a flock of wyverns graced his vision. Dozens upon dozens of the smaller Dragon-like beings soared across the skies, their leathery wings blotting out the rising sun. It was a sight both awe-inspiring and terrifying. It was a reminder of the monstrous power the Count held as a breeder.
A surge of relief crashed over Shaw. The messages had reached Count’s Wyvernic nesting grounds, and the message he'd sent just after that damned dark elf played his bloody theatrical games made it. One Wyvern and its rider and a woman donning a dark gambeson reinforced by chain mail assessed the situation below before descending for a landing.
"Finally!" He breathed, a flicker of hope rekindling in his chest as he walked towards the woman and saw she had steel hair with the weathered face of a seasoned rider.
Grabbing her blade staff, the woman dismounted and casted a quick protection spell as her Wyvern snarled and snapped at a few workers who had gotten to close. "Captain Shaw, I take it?" she said warily, peering around the camp to spot any sign of deception. "I'm Commander Eira, of the Barbed Talon. We received the Lord Harmswid’s message… What in all the Abyss is going on?"
Shaw swallowed, trying to keep the desperation from seeping into his tone. "A change of plans, Commander. The Duchess," he lowered his voice, "has decided to… consolidate our Lord’s forces…"
Eira frowned, her eyes narrowing as she surveyed the camp before pulling off her riding cap, exposing her pointed ears, and eyed Shaw in disbelief. “And our Lord… agreed? To this?” She replied incredulously, her hand tightening around her staff.
Shaw hesitated, a thousand half-truths and evasions flashing through his mind. The reality they just experienced was so convoluted, so insane, that it would likely sound like the ramblings of a lunatic. Yet, lying to one like Commander Eira's gaze, with an entire wing of Wyverns, seemed an even worse idea than telling the truth.
He took a deep breath, steeling himself. "No, Commander," he admitted, his voice surprisingly steady. "The Count is... dead. Executed. By the Duchess' hand."
"Executed!? Over what!?" Eira recoiled in surprise as the grip on her blade staff loosened ever so slightly.
"Treason," Shaw said, the word heavy on his tongue. "That dark elf, Tharivol, accused Lord Harmswid of defiance in the Duchess and took his head…."
A storm brewed in Elira’s silver eyes as her expression darkened. Her wyvern, sensing the shift in her mood, let out a low, menacing growl, its eyes flickering with a fire mirroring its rider's anger. The air around them seemed to chill, and the morning's light did little to dispel the growing tension.
"Treason?" she echoed, her voice sharp as the blade of her staff. "And you let this happen? You didn't think to stop them?"
Shaw flinched under her gaze, the weight of his decisions—and their consequences—bearing down on him. "We couldn't," he protested, his voice strained. "They had a dragon! An elder, or perhaps even an ancient one! It was unlike anything I ever did see! We wouldn't even been able to make the monster sneeze, let alone stop ‘em!!"
The fire in Eira’s Wyvern’s mouth started to billow with a raise of her hand as her frustration reached a boiling point. "So, you chose to let the murderer of our Lord walk away unscathed and seize his Wyverns under false pretenses!?" Her tone was icy, and each word stabbed at the Knight Captain like a dagger.
As the wyvern crept closer with its jaw parting slightly letting Shaw see the vortex of flame building within its maw, the knight captain backed away with fear in his eyes. “W-What could I have done against such a monster!?” He pleaded with a voice cracking with strain. “Even with yer entire wing, we all woulda been done in! We gone do nothin’ but annoy it!”
Eira sneered dismissively, flicking her hand in a quick gesture that caused her Wyvern to calm down. "Bah!" she exclaimed in frustration. She hated it, but she knew this coward had a point. Fighting even a senior dragon, let alone a young, teenage dragon, would have been suicide for this lot.
With the Wyvern glaring menacingly at the Knight Captain, Eira's eyes narrowed as she surveyed the ragtag group of soldiers and mages. Her mind started to race through scenarios, each one ending in disaster if they were to face such a beast head-on. "Feel grateful that I show you mercy, plebian," she finally said, her voice laced with disdain before turning around and rubbing the snout of her Wyvern.
“It’s okay, precious… I’ll feed you something more delicious than a dickless coward…” Eira cooed and soothed her bestial companion and scratched under its chin. “I don’t even know what Count Harmswid was thinking when giving a lowly knave like him hereditary peerage.”
The knight captain gritted his teeth at the insult as Eira let out a derisive sigh. Without another word, the wing commander turned and mounted her Wyvern before looking down at her so-called counterpart with a contemptuous look in her eyes. Shaw, despite his anger and frustration, couldn't meet her gaze, feeling the sting of her shaming.
With a harrumph that echoed throughout camp, Eira squeezed her thighs against the wyvern's flanks. The language of pressure was all the creature needed, recognizing its rider's keen desire to take flight. In response, the beast’s mighty wings beat the air, and a whirlwind of power kicked up dust and debris. The force of the takeoff was a visceral thrill, propelling Eira and her mount skyward, leaving awestruck faces below.
As they ascended, the wyvern flock fell into formation behind their leader forming a disciplined wedge, cleaving through the air. They flew eastward, bound for Aldenshore, the rising sun painting long shadows across the land.
Looking around him, The knight captain worse an expression that told of humiliation. The man clenched his fist as his eyes darted across each face, accusing them of also mocking him before violently swinging his arm to the side and barking orders. “WHAT THE HELL ARE YE ALL LOOKIN’ AT!? GET BACK TO WORK!!” In his anger, the knight captain’s hand went to his sword.
“WE’RE LEAVIN’ IN AN HOUR!” With a final bellow, Shaw stormed back towards his tent, obscenities trailing behind him. His men, startled into action, scurried about, the camp abuzz with renewed purpose.
Meanwhile, still hidden in the foliage with their eyes trained on the chaotic scene, Coleman and his ODA team exchanged glances.
"That's a lotta lizards," Bennett whispered with awe evident in his voice.
"Yaaaa," Lister drawled, "All headed east, following that big-ass bitch."
Coleman's brows furrowed, a contemplative hum escaping his lips. "I think this camp is getting ready to move too."
"Whatcha think they're running from?" Bennett asked, turning to Coleman and lifting his eyebrow. “Us?”
Offering a simple shrug in reply, Coleman pressed his face back into his specialized surveillance equipment. "Who knows? Maybe they got spooked by the rangers when they raided." He paused, a predatory glint in his eyes. "Regardless, we're gonna be hitting this place once they piss off."
Elijah watched the retreating wyverns, his gaze focused on the lead rider. "That shiny one riding on the flyer… she's a problem," he muttered, his voice laced with a hint of menace. "Got the feel of someone actually competent."
Coleman nodded slowly, his own gaze fixed on the departing figures. "This the main reason why I want to wait till their long gone. They’re already unloading livestock and what I think is vegetables.” He looked over to Elijah as he spoke. “We can slip in, grab what we need, and bug out before anyone knows we’re there.”
“Ehhh…. I’d still like to snatch one of them up,” Elijah replied, rubbing the back of his neck and wearing a complicated expression. “There’s a mass exodus heading east, and any information we can get our hands on would be worth its weight in gold." He finished before ripping a piece of jerky in half and sharing it with his patron, who was happily munching away on his shoulder.
A deep breath of air left Coleman’s mouth as he sat back and thought for a moment. “I don’t know… There’s a lot of the bastards in there.” His gaze turned to Kwon, the team’s sergeant, in the hopes that he might have some kind of tactical insight. “Any ideas?”
Folding his arms and looking up at the sky, Kwon let out a contemplative groan and crossed his arms. “Well… I have a few ideas…" he drawled. "Why don't we turn this into a three-pronged attack? We've got those Poles further up the road to the east.” Kwon’s head gestured towards one of two dirt roads leading into the place.“ and the Aussies are somewhat near us, right?"
"We could coordinate an ambush," Kwon continued. "The Poles brought heavier gear with ‘em and could cause some serious ruckus in the middle of that convoy.” He said, standing up and grabbing a stick.
Kwon then started drawing a line in the dirt to represent the convey and then drew an arrow interdiction its midsection. “They can Get 'em good and riled up, draw the majority attention away from us while we and the Aussies hit the rear, nabbing anything and anyone worth taking."
Coleman stroked his chin thoughtfully. "The Commandos would buy us time... and if we just focus on just snatching shit, the rest of the convoy wouldn’t even realize the tail was getting shwacked." He added, nodding thoughtfully. "I like it."
"Ya, not bad," Elijah joined in with a wolfish grin, "It's the kind of chaos that just... feels right, y'know?"
“Didn’t we bring mortars? We could just start dropping shit on them while the Poles rough them up.” Bennett chimed in.
A thought hum left Coleman’s voice as he wore a face that said he was deliberating on parting with something precious. "Ya, however..." he started with a cautious note in his voice, "We don't exactly have that many rounds, so we should only use those them for a special occasion."
Elijah cocked his head, munching on his bit of jerky. "Sure, but... isn’t this pretty much a special occasion? If we're gonna use 'em, this is the scenario for it."
Kwon nodded in agreement. "The two goons got a point. Dropping a few surprises in the middle of their convoy while the Poles stir up trouble would pretty much ensure our success.” He added while kicking his makeshift battle plan to break it up. “It’s apparent they don’t know how to deal with indirect fire yet, so we should take advantage of it while we can."
Coleman sighed dreadfully as he hung his head and capitulated to his men. The idea of raining a bit of death and destruction definitely held an undeniable appeal, especially with the fact that it would significantly reduce the chance of casualties. He needed to stop being a miser and use what they had to its fullest extent. "Alright, we’ll use the mortars,” he declared, standing up, “We’ll zero for a predesignated spot where the Commandos will engage them, drop a shit load of mortars, and scare the hell outta 'em.”
“However…” The team leader murmured as he still felt like there were some glaring flaws in the plan. “These shitheads still use magic to augment their physical abilities, so it's still gonna get dicey… Any idea on how to subdue one of them?” Coleman asked, looking around.
The team fell into a heavy silence, with each member becoming lost in their own thoughts. They had always engaged the enemy from a distance or at least had enough space between them to riddle each prospective warrior with bullets. The question of subduing someone, especially those using magic to enhance themselves, seemed incredibly unwise. Everyone exchanged uncertain looks and collectively shrugged as they acknowledged their lack of a solid plan for non-lethal engagement.
A heavy silence descended upon the team as everyone looked at each other with eyes the kind laden with uncertainty. They'd always fought these magic users with the buffer of distance. But close up? That was a another question they weren’t too keen on finding out.
Ever the one to think outside the box, Elijah hummed in interest. "Hey, Yana,” he called out tapping the bag of beef jerky that had her little legs sticking out of it. “Do you have any way to drop some dude without, ya know, turning them into crispy a critter?" he asked as her legs kicked angrily at the sudden smack.
Suddenly her legs sunk into the bag and her tuny head popped out, narrowing her eyes at her insufferable human. “Haahhhh!?!?” An irritated and confused look clouded the little fairy’s face, clearly taken aback by the question.
“Why would I do something so nonsensical and stupid as that!?” she retorted, her tone dripping with disdain. “And why are you so insolent all of the time!?”
Unfazed by Yana's outburst, Elijah met her annoyed gaze with a mischievous and calculating look that flashed across his face for a moment. "Oh, if you can't do it, then don't worry about it," he said, his voice dripping with a challenge that insinuated the task was out of her capabilities. He continued, adding fuel to the fire, "If it's beyond your means, then don't worry about it. We'll figure something out."
Yana stared at him blankly for a few moment. She couldn’t believe the words that left her apostle’s mouth wand was clearly unable to process what was just said. The very implication that something might be beyond her capabilities was not just an affront to her pride, but an insult that couldn’t be left unasnwered. Then, suddenly, her hair billowed like a raging flame, a physical manifestation of her indignation.
Her reaction was instantaneous and intense. In a blur of motion that caught everyone off guard, she zipped out of the bag of jerky and grabbed a fist full of Elijah's long hair, yanking on it as she brought her face close to his, her eyes ablaze with a fiery fury. "What do you mean by 'can't' and 'beyond my means'!? I am a goddess!" she yelled, her voice a mix of anger and wounded pride. “You insolent little man! You idiot! You dummy!”
Elijah couldn’t help but wince at the deceptively powerful tug. His tactic of provoking Yana into action had worked a little too well. “Ow, ow, ow! Yana, chill!” He yelped as she pulled harder, growling at him. “I’m sorry! Relax! I believe you’re capable of anything!”
“Hmph!” Yana harrumphed as she released her human. "Well, of course I am!" She huffed, crossing her arms and spinning around in annoyance. “The mere fact you questioned my ability is not only unacceptable! But rude! Rude, rude, rude, rude, rude!”
As everyone stared at the two as if they lost their minds, Elijah rubbed his head where Yana had yanked his hair, wincing slightly from the unexpected fierceness of her grip. "God damn..." he muttered under his breath, but a grin still formed on his face. She had taken the bait, but now he had to see if he could reel her in.
Looking up at the tiny goddess, who was now floating with an air of indignation, Elijah decided to shift gears and aimed to appease her wounded pride. "Well, I just never seen you in action, you know? Maybe you could give your favorite human a demonstration of how magnificent you can be?" His tone was a mix of genuine curiosity and a dash of flattery, hoping to smooth over the ruffled feathers. “Maybe stretch your arms out and test the new strength you’ve been gaining?”
Still hovering with her arms crossed, Yana paused at the request. Her anger momentarily gave way to intrigue. The idea of showcasing her abilities, particularly after having them doubted, was an appealing opportunity to reassert her divine prowess, especially since she had taken a small slice of power from the few souls she had helped pass. Her expression softened slightly, and the flames in her hair dimmed as she considered Elijah's proposal.
"A demonstration, you say?" Yana mused, her voice losing some of its earlier sharpness. "I suppose it wouldn't hurt to remind you mortals of the extent of my power.”
Elijah gave a cheeky grin to the rest of his team, who just stared at him as if he were a madman. “We just need you to make the person I point out squeal in pain while we tie ‘em up.”

2024.05.16 11:24 Writteninsanity Splitting Seconds: Chapter 1 - Blind Dates (The Superpower Soulmates Story)

It candidly sucked being surrounded by constant reminders that you’d lost the genetic lottery. Sure, it was easier than some people thought to get around the world without powers; it wasn’t like the government expected everyone to be a speedster or to be able to fly. Hell, a hundred years ago, nobody even had powers. The infrastructure was there. Life went on.
That said, staying cheery about the hand I’d been dealt was difficult. Enhanced perception was useful for a lot of things, from party tricks to always reading the fine print, but next to flight? Next to teleportation?
I’d gotten hung up on movement powers because I’d taken the bus to the bar, and the only superpower buses had was being late.
I was specifically at the bar for the sake of a blind date set up by my best friend; Todd was about two times my size and could throw a car across the street. His powers did nothing to help me with his current obsession with my dating life, but here we were. I supposed it was a fair obsession. I hadn’t been trying.
It honestly made sense that Todd had been keenly aware of romance since he’d met his soul mate. See, a strange thing with powers was that when you were around your soulmate, they were inexplicably stronger. Todd had met Soo-jung when she’d been on vacation in Crescent three years ago. They’d been inseparable since, and he’d been able to throw a car down three blocks instead of across the street.
Or so he claimed. Nobody was eager to volunteer their car for a demonstration, or anything else heavy and expensive, for that matter.
For my part, I hadn’t spent a lot of time guessing what would happen if I met my soulmate. It was a common train of thought for some, but I never found that it stopped at any fun stations. Instead, I indulged Todd’s meddling because he was my friend and bad dates at least made good stories.
“Gimme a sec, I’ll grab us another round,” Todd announced as he pushed out from our table. “Emma said she’s going to be here soon.”
“You bought the last one.”
“Yeah, now you can buy two in a row once Emma gets here and look generous. Think about it, man.”
“Sure,” I answered, but Todd was already walking away from the table and toward the bar.
Soo-jung leaned in. “You know he’s trying, right?”
“I know, maybe a little too much.”
“You don’t hear the half of it.”
“Oh, good.”
“I had to tell him to calm down when it came to buttering you up to Emma,” Soo-jung explained as she took a sip from her drink. “Sometimes I wonder about him.”
“I’m surprised he says anything nice about me.”
“He’d never say it to your face.” She watched Todd at the bar instead of looking at me during our conversation.
“Does that mean you’ll do it for him?”
“He trusts me to keep his secrets.”
“How about I suggest things and read your reaction?” I asked.
Soo-jung frowned in response before she pointedly rolled her eyes. She knew that reading reactions was one of my party tricks. If you couldn’t be powerful, you could at least read a room.
“Okay, fine. What do you know about Emma?”
“Her last name’s Tavish.”
“That’s it?”
“She works with Todd.”
“I knew that. He kept telling me she was a co-worker.”
“Todd thinks she’s cute.”
“He told you that?”
“No, but he has high standards for you.”
“That’s all the detail you have?”
“Todd’s not allowed to talk about work at hom- Hey, honey.”
Todd was back at the table holding all three pints in one arm; he passed one to each of us despite Soo being less than halfway finished with her current drink. Once he’d finished distributing, he turned to Soo-jung and asked her a question in broken Korean.
He’d been trying to learn, and he was still struggling. Not that I knew the language.
“Yes,” Soo-jung responded in English, “we were talking about Emma; no Korean around Toby. It’s rude.”
“I thought you wanted me to practice?”
“You can practice at home.”
“So we were talking about Emma,” Todd jumped back to the previous topic instead of discussing his inconsistent study of Korean. “Awesome woman, perfect for you, man.”
“What makes you say that?” I asked.
“Oh, she sucks too.”
“Ah, thanks.”
“He means powers-wise,” Soo-jung stepped in.
“So you do know something about her,” I pointed out.
“Something? I’ve been telling Soo everything since we got in the car to come here.” Just as Todd finished, he flinched. Soo had kicked him under the table. “But it wasn’t much, really.”
“What do I get to know?”
“I don’t want to taint your expectations.” He pushed his empty glass away, swapping it with the new one. “But can I be serious for a second?”
I considered it. “Sure.”
“She’s like my boss’, boss’ boss. So best behavior.”
“Wait. Seriously?” I leaned in. Todd worked for the CPRU, which meant that she had to be a heavy hitter if she was high ranked in the city’s power regulation department. “She’s—”
“Not quite.” He backpedaled. “We share a building. She’s straight DPR.”
I blinked twice at that. “Way to set me up to fail.”
“You should believe in yourself,” Soo cut in.
“Todd I w—”
“And she’s here.” Todd had turned his attention away from me and toward his phone. “Hope you’re ready to meet your soulmate.”
“Honey, don’t set that expectation.”
The bar’s front door opened, and I was the only one who could hear it over the atmosphere. I glanced over, and there she was.
She was stunning by any definition, but especially mine. Maybe it was a strange way to describe someone, but she looked beautifully meticulous, from brunette hair to olive skin, to her light blue jacket; everything was in place, and everything about her was gorgeous. Assuming that was Emma, I owed Todd big time.
“Okay, that can’t be her, right?” I asked Todd. After a second, without a response, I checked to see if he was waving at her, but he was stock still, a stupid grin plastered over his face. “Todd?”
Holy shit. The DPR had some crazy people on their roster, but this- I waved a hand in front of Todd’s face and snapped my fingers, then caught the sound of a single cautious heel clicking against the floor.
I stood up from the table and looked back at the door. She’d taken one step into the bar but had gotten caught in the same shock I had. “Emma?” I asked.
She snapped her attention to me -god, her eyes were- but she just looked confused.
“Toby,” I explained, “I’m Todd’s friend.” I motioned over to Todd’s still body and took the first steps to say hello. “This is really impressive. I didn’t think this was possible. It’s cool to meet someone wh—”
“I’m not doing this,” she said. “This is impossible. How are yo—”
“Trust me, this isn’t in my…” We stared at each other for a moment. Somehow, time stopped more than it already was.
“Holy shit.” We both said it at once.
“So this isn’t you?” she asked. Her eyes were still meandering around the frozen bar instead of staying in the conversation with me.
“No, it’s not,” I walked along her gaze and ended up against the bar counter, “did Todd tell you what my power was?”
“He just told me you wouldn’t mind having me around,” Emma answered, which somehow just brought up more questions.
“Enhanced perception,” I grabbed a drink off of the bar to see if I could; As soon as I touched it, it seemed to animate back to life. “What do you mean, ‘mind having you around’?”
“I dampen powers,” she explained, a little quieter than anything else she’d said, “make them weaker, hard to use. The technical definition is long and wordy so…” She sighed as she watched me slosh the beer around. “It’s a lot of trouble, really.”
“Probably good for work,” I offered.
“Pretty much the whole reason I have my job, but Callum wouldn’t admit that.” She approached, but there wasn’t an open seat near where I was standing, nor could we ask for someone to move. “Callum is—”
“Callum Rehsman, head of the D.P.R for the past six years,” I stepped in, “sorry, comes with the perception thing.”
“Honestly, I’m just glad I don’t have to explain it,” Emma took to leaning against the bar instead of walking over to a seat. She undid the top button of her shirt, which was probably too high for a date, anyway. “Emma Terish. Ring any bells up there?”
“No.”
“And you’re?”
“Toby Vander,” I put down the beer to offer my hand, and it froze as soon as I let go. We both paid attention to that instead of the potential formal hello.
“So this isn’t you.” Emma reached for the glass and picked it up; once she did, it animated just like it had with me. “And it isn’t me…”
I swallowed nothing. We’d both said holy shit for a reason, but it felt impossible to admit it. Wasn’t there supposed to be a — Well, something? Anything?
Then again, we were stopping time, and what else could you ask for?
“Do you want a drink, Toby?” Emma asked. She vaulted herself over the bar with a frankly shocking amount of grace for someone in a pantsuit.
“Uh, sure.”
“I’d ask what you were drinking, but we might have limited options,” she was considering her new vantage point from behind the counter.
I took the opportunity to grab the drink I’d left behind on the table. “I’ll use the one I had.” I tapped Todd’s hand for posterity, and nothing happened to him. “Any idea what this might—”
“No idea,” she answered without letting me finish, “but my job involves dealing with unknown powers, so…” She tried to use the soda-gun and swore when it didn’t work. “You learn to roll with it until people cooperate.”
“You still think I’m doing this?”
“I know it’s not me, and there aren’t many options here with us,” she said as she ducked behind the bar and came back up with a lemonade cooler, “but I came here for a date, and I plan to have one. Been a long week.”
I returned to the bar, finding a seat now that she was on the other side. “I just need to establish that this isn’t me. I’m not trying to—”
“If it isn’t you and it’s not me stopping time around us, then someone is giving us a very private venue for our first date.”
“Isn’t that nice?”
“It really is.” She took a sip of her drink, then pulled it away before she had time to swallow. “Shit. Do you have cash?”
“I’ll cover you.” She frowned at that; clearly she wasn’t satisfied with someone else paying for everything. “Plus, you’re serving me tonight. So…” That seemed to be enough plausible deniability to satisfy her. “Cheers?”
“Cheers.”
Throughout drink one, we were casting nervous glances around the paused bar; by drink five, we were laughing, just the two of us. Hours dripped by with the free beer… or they didn’t… It was hard to tell.
Emma added her sixth can to her pyramid and composed herself. “Okay, okay, okay. One second.” She took a deep breath. “This has been so much fun, but I told Todd I’d tell him when I got here so” — she needed another second to find her verbal footing — “can you stop this now?”
“Stop what?” I was halfway through a sip.
“This is the coolest power I’ve seen but—”
“It’s not me, I promise,” my insistence ended up sounding more like a drunk debate. The drunk part was accurate.
“So your power really is enhanced perception.”
“Yes.”
“Okay. Okay. You’re not lying.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Because that’s lame and—” She stopped herself. “Shit, sorry.”
“I am so used to it.”
“You wouldn’t say that drunk if you could stop time is my point,” she almost ducked down to grab another drink but thought better of it. “So, that makes us…”
We’d reached this impasse several times in the last hours. I scanned her. The lines on her face. The size of her irises. She was worried. Apprehensive.
So I said it first.
“We’re soul mates.”
She looked down and to the left, considering instead of answering.
“Why else would one of us display a power we’d never seen before? Unless you’re right and someone was stopping time for everyone but me and—”
“And the woman who’s immune to powers,” she cut in. “Maybe we are soul mates, but turn it off.”
“It’s not—”
“Toby, please.”
“I don’t—” I stopped short and instead tried even though I didn’t know how. My perception was passive. I didn’t get to choose whether I used it. Was there supposed to be a switch somewhere inside my head? Was I—
How long had it been at this point? Six, seven hours? We’d planned to meet pretty late and it would almost be light out by now. She was right. We had to get—
“I don’t know how,” I admitted, “if it’s me.”
Emma opened her mouth to say something, then reconsidered. Her perfectly manicured nails were digging into the vinyl of the bar top.
“Okay. It’s been lovely, but if you getting here started this then,” I said as I stood up, “maybe I just need to leave, and that will turn it off so we can figure out what’s going on.” I took the first steps toward the door.
“That’s a good plan,” she nodded along with what she was saying, like she was convincing herself, “I’ll reach out to you. It was an excellent date.”
“Let Todd know for me,” I added as I reached the door; a second later, I stepped into the chilled early-fall air. The door didn’t shut behind me, so I kept walking until I would have been out of eyesight.
Then I stopped.
Should I have turned around? What were the chances that she was my soul mate? What was I leaving behind if I didn’t see her again? It was a dumb thought, but the idea of walking away started gnawing at me.
But what choice did I have? In front of me, a couple was frozen in the middle of a quiet conversation on the way to the bar. Soul mates only affected one another when they were close by. I took a few more steps and started to sprint.
I was three blocks away when the world stuttered around me. My vision blurred, and the moonlight was shattered by the sun. I stumbled, almost crashing into a woman dressed like she was on her way to brunch.
Shit. I’d left my jacket at the bar, but—
I checked my watch; 8:06 AM.
