2024.05.21 20:38 jaybhum I made my first Flutter app to solve loneliness. 14,000 minutes of voice messages later:

I hope you are doing better today than yesterday. (TLDR at the end; or enjoy my story :) )

Why:

About 11 months ago, I launched my app for the first time on lonely because I had previously experienced loneliness myself during grad school. I wanted to reach out to people going through similar experiences by providing them with what would’ve helped me in the past.
I felt this was an important mission for me and a much more rewarding one than my day job that I quit my job to work on the app full-time.
It was necessary because I did not come from a programming background. I knew how to program in the sense of running scientific simulations on MATLAB, but creating the front-end and back-end for a consumer app was totally new to me, so I had to learn from scratch.
I enjoyed everyday going to a cafe to learn from programming crash courses on YouTube, developing the app little by little, and eventually launching the app! The initial response was actually pretty great: 220 upvotes for the app launch post, which I proudly pinned in my bio :)

How:

I made the app to be based on voice, and nothing else: no profiles, no profile photos, and even no texts. The reason for that was I felt a lot of people felt lonely and had trouble finding meaningful online connections because of the modern communication medium which actually promotes superficial and viral contents over authentic and long-form contents. It is easy to see from examples: TikTok’s 30 second videos, Instagram’s eye-popping photos by beautiful people from the globe, and Twitter(X)’s 140-char spicy takes. Sure, these platforms offer us information about DIYs, trends, and news that can enrich our lives and entertain us, but they don’t by all means help us feel more connected to individuals. Even on Reddit, the contents tend to be more wholesome and there are hilarious comments that build on top of each other, but the actual sense of connection you feel with the users is tenuous.
Focusing on voice worked! It was incredible listening to the heartfelt messages from strangers from all over the world who opened up about their loneliness and didn’t mind being vulnerable to other strangers. I have personally spoke with everyone that came by. The 14k minutes of voice messages do not include my own voice messages; they are all messages that people left for their own posts, to each other, or as replies to me.

Highlights:

There were some incredible moments, which would be too long to share in this post (leave a comment if you want to hear more!), but some of the highlights were (note: these are all from public conversations):
What was also incredible was that there were not only people experiencing loneliness here, but also people who did not feel lonely but were on the app to support others going through loneliness. They would share stories and studies related to loneliness in their posts, and also try to talk to some lonely folks on the app who seemed very hardened by their experience of loneliness which made them cynical and pessimistic. The concept of compassionate listening by Thich Nhat Hanh and Polyvagal theory that explains 3 levels of our nervous system are a few things they mentioned that come to my mind. Unfortunately, these efforts by supporters were often, so to speak, ineffective in solving people’s loneliness.

What I learned:

And that was part of what made it so hard to have a sustainable ecosystem on my app: many people who have been lonely for a long period of time had their personalities and social skills hardened to the point that they either:
My hope for the app was to help people who experience loneliness find and support each other. By providing the platform for them to voice out their stories, have them be heard by others, and find others who resonate and reply, I thought they would finally find friends whom they can relate to, share their lives with, and would no longer have to feel lonely again.
However, the reality was that many were hardened by loneliness and it was hard for such connections to materialize. Plus, one of the main ways for an app like this to grow is by word of mouth. Unfortunately, most people experiencing loneliness did not have anyone to share the app with, which stunted the app’s growth and mostly depended on me manually bringing users onto the platform.
With fewer chances of having good interactions, even the people who really resonated with the app and shared stories slowly stopped coming back. Some just suddenly ghosted, which made the experience on the app painful for other engaged people on the app.

My hope for the future:

I still believe that there are more people out there experiencing loneliness who have the deep desire to share their stories and find the long-term friends across the globe who understand each other and can share slices of their lives with.

Hello,
Concerned dad here 🙋🏼‍♂️
My 5yo son has a some form of diagnosis from a private practitioner (I’m not completely sold but that’s another thread altogether)
That being said I think it’s evident that it’s probably accurate and im trying to be open minded and avoid denial.
Recently he’s gone back a year in school which I felt would be beneficial as he has a global development delay anyway and should have been held back before he started (another another thread)!
His new teacher has suggested to us that he may benefit from being medicated for ADHD, now this worries me as there are so many pros and cons attached and stigmas to boot!
The teacher acknowledged he is super bright but really struggles to concentrate and maintain a task for longer periods of time, which I see at home helping him learn to read with the curriculum books etc.
I know I can’t get a definite answer but I’m trying to understand ADHD at a rapid rate and determine what’s best for my son and mitigate all bad side effects or know what’s coming if this route is taken and what are alternatives that could actually be effective.
Could zeolite help? Are there medicines that aren’t stimulants but work? Could he become dependent on them having a longer term knock on into other drugs? Appetite loss is a no really as he is under weight anyway, how is that navigated.
I just want him to be happy, comfortable and keep being his lovely sweet self.
The format of this post will likely be annoying to some and I’m sorry, I’m kind of frantically trying to get my thoughts out as they happen!

There is a severe lack of understanding about this community, including among mental health providers and social workers. Stigma, bias, and misconceptions prevent those who are attracted to minors (but do not offend) from seeking help they may need.
CSA = child sexual abuse
NoMAPs = non-offending, minor attracted people: those who are attracted to children but are committed to not causing harm against them
Many non-offending MAPs do not seek professional support, or may withdraw from support, due to the following reasons:
Those of us in the social work and mental health fields can address common misconceptions about this group, as a way to encourage MAPs to get help when they need it. Greater education and understanding about MAPs increases their well-being while also contributing to the prevention of CSA.
Common questions
Are you saying child sexual abuse is acceptable?
Absolutely not. Causing harm to children in the form of in-person/online sexual contact; CSAM (sometimes referred to as child pornography); grooming; or any other inappropriate behavior is not and will never be acceptable.
Many people who are attracted to minors are vehemently against these forms of harm as well, and do not support ideas such as lowering the age of consent. There are entire communities of minor attracted people who are committed to not harming children.
Isn’t using the term ‘MAPs’ normalizing pedophilia?
Only a minority of the population experiences a primary attraction to children. In this sense, pedophilia and other forms of minor attraction are not “normal”, in the same way that LBGTQ identities are not “normal” by proportion to the general population.
When people refer to normalizing something, they are usually talking about removing the stigma behind it, or acknowledging that it is acceptable.
Having an unchosen, unchangeable attraction to children is not inherently wrong, immoral, predatory, or pathological. It becomes so only when harm is involved. Attraction itself is not a behavior.
Shouldn’t we be protecting children from MAPs?
We should absolutely protect children from abusers, groomers, and predators. These terms are not synonymous with being minor attracted. In fact, research shows that the majority of child sexual abuse cases are carried out by people who do not meet the criteria for pedophilia (see “Sources” section below for reference).
When somebody feels they are at risk for harming a child, they should be able to seek immediate and effective help. Some NoMAPs need temporary or ongoing support in remaining resilient against offending, but this does not represent all or even the majority of NoMAPs. Many in this community have no intention of ever harming a child, and they are not at risk for doing so.
It is also important to note that many MAPs are still children themselves. MAPs tend to become aware of their attractions around the time of puberty or early adolescence. Children who are MAPs deserve the same degree of safety and well-being that other children do.
Why is the term ‘MAP’ even used?
This term has become more widely used for two main reasons:
  1. It emphasizes attraction over action. The word ‘pedophile’ has become so conflated with ‘offender’ in every sector of our society, that most people assume a behavioral component when they hear the word. ‘Minor attracted person’, on the other hand, emphasizes that we are talking about those with an attraction, which includes both those who do and those who do not act on it.
Because there are MAPs who are also offenders, the term ‘Non-offending Minor Attracted Person’ (NoMAP) is useful when we are talking specifically about those who have an attraction but do not act on it.
  1. ‘MAP’ is also a more accurate, all-encompassing way to refer to the community as a whole. This includes people with infantophilia, pedophilia, and (ep)hebephilia. It would not make sense, for example, to call someone who is primarily attracted to 15-18 year olds a pedophile.
However, many people do not self-identify with the term ‘MAP’. Some identify as pedophiles, hebephiles, boy lovers, girl lovers, or other terms. Some may use multiple terms to describe themselves. What’s important is that we should honor how each individual person self-identifies their attraction, and not impose a label on them.
Alternatives have also been suggested by those who conduct research with this community, such as ‘child attracted person’ as opposed to ‘minor attracted person’. I use ‘MAP’ here because it is the most widely accepted way to refer to the community as a whole.
What would someone who harms a child be called?
Depending on the context, people who harm children could be called many things—offender, abuser, predator, or groomer, to name a few examples.
Research shows that the majority of child sexual abuse cases are carried out by people who do not meet the criteria for pedophilia. (See “Sources” section below to learn why someone who’s not primarily attracted to children would sexually abuse a child.)
Is pedophilia a mental illness/diagnosis?
It depends. Some MAPs are committed to not offending, are not at risk for offending, and have come to terms with their attraction. These individuals have no reason to be pathologized.
Many others are not at risk for offending, yet they desire professional help for mental health conditions (like depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation) that result from the hatred they receive in our society. These individuals also have no reason to be pathologized, as their mental health conditions result from stigma rather than from the attraction itself.
Some MAPs desire professional help in dealing with the difficult emotions resulting from not being able to have a fulfilling sexual or romantic connection, particularly those who are exclusively attracted to children. (Many MAPs are attracted to both children and adults, and may be in relationships with adults.)
There are also MAPs who desire professional help in remaining resilient against offending. In these cases, and in cases where MAPs do harm children, pedophilia would be considered pathological since there is significant distress and/or harm involved.
Is pedophilia a sexual orientation?
The available research points to pedophilia and other forms of minor attraction being an age-based sexual orientation, in that the attraction is unchosen, typically arises during the time of puberty or early adolescence, and remains fairly constant throughout one’s life.
Are you suggesting that MAPs are part of the LGBTQ+ community?
Age-based orientations are by nature different from gender-based orientations, in that there is no safe or ethical way for an adult to engage sexually or romantically with a child. The experience of MAPs is also vastly different from that of LGBTQ individuals in several ways.
While there are some parallels that can be drawn between studies on stigma among LGBTQ individuals and the experience of stigma among MAPs, these are two separate communities.
Can someone’s attraction to children be changed?
Empirical data, based on qualitative and quantitative studies, points to the fact that pedophilia and other forms of minor attraction cannot be changed or "cured". (See “Sources” section below for reference.)
How many MAPs are there in the world?
Across various studies, the average incidence of minor attraction, meaning those who are primarily attracted to minors, comes out to about 5% of the adult population worldwide. This number is likely an undercount for the following reasons:

Reducing stigma against NoMAPs contributes to a safer society for all, based around empathy and evidence. Many people do not feel safe disclosing their attraction for fear of being unjustly reported, misunderstood, or physically harmed.

Revenue Sharing Vault

Anyone who has been around Crypto since the early days is familiar with the concept of buy/sell taxes; $RAFL has these set to 2.5%.
The 2.5% goes straight into the Revenue Share Vault for 3x weekly distribution.

Quarterly Token Burns

Using the lucky Powerball number (no affiliation; this is an official lottery in the United States: see powerball.com for details) drawn three times per week, a simple calculation is made to determine what percentage of the Revenue Sharing Vault is paid out to Stakers.
Mondays: 1x multiplier
Wednesdays: 2x multiplier
Saturdays: 3x multiplier

So I wasn't hacked I just made a dumb mistake. I was originally linked into Genshin through FB. I unlinked it and meant to link my email and forgot about it. I took a break off genshin and my log in expired so now I'm not sure what to do. I've tried the recovery form but I don't have an email tied to the account. Every time I try and put my username in it says something along the lines of invalid account format which I have no idea what that means. Hello, recent graduate this month and I've applied to roughly 100 or so jobs with this resume. Jobs I'm mainly focusing on is full-stack, but I'm just looking for anything software development related. I just want to be able to at least get to the interview stage, but my callback rate is extremely poor with it just being a single company reaching out so far.
Two things that have been bugging me. Is it even worth it to include the front-end position I had in 2019? This was a family business and I made a static site for it, but with such a massive gap since then as well as the fact that it was so short, I've been iffy about keeping this in there. The other section would be clubs, is there any advantage to having this in there?
Aside from that other advice I'm currently looking for is:
  • Anything immediate like formatting/organization issues you see
  • Are the bullet points sufficient? Do you get the idea of my impact for a project/position?
  • I've limited my bullet points for each project to 1-2 as to be able to fit in more projects. Is this a good idea? Should I instead do the opposite, removing 1-2 projects to add more info on the remaining ones?
  • This one is more for future advice, what projects are eye-catching and what projects should I remove?

So I (20F) have been with my boyfriend (19M) for over a year now and he has so many great attributes, and I love him with my whole heart. However, I’ve been contemplating breaking up with him because I feel like he is a bit selfish. Here’s some examples of what I’m talking about.
Yesterday he started a new job and I was super excited to hear about it. In that same afternoon, however, my cat decided to go missing. I was freaking out and sobbing since last time I lost a cat at this house, I found her dead body. He ends up, calling me to talk about his day and I picked up but I was pretty stressed. I kept telling him I promised I was listening but I was still scared that my cat had died. He just responds “oh, well I can call you later if you want”. While this was simple, it made me feel upset since it feels like he couldn’t take some time away from talking about his new job to try to comfort me in that moment. It should also noted that he wanted me to get this cat soooo bad, and I’m so happy I did because I love my cat like he’s my son. However, my boyfriend barely ever helps with him when it comes to feeding and especially the litter (he hates the smell) even though he was a huge reason as to why I got the cat in the first place.
Another time a couple weeks ago, he had taken me to Barnes & Noble for a study day since I had finals the next day and had been stressing all week about not being able to focus on campus, which was a sweet gesture. However after about three or four hours, he started getting very angsty and tired and wanted to leave which he did feel bad about. The problem is that Barns is like a 45 min drive back to our campus so leaving meant that I got all distracted again. Now the part that made me angry it was that he cluelessly said on the way driving back that’s he’s excited to go back since his friends have been wanted to hang with him all day. When I told him this made me upset he felt super bad and you could tell the thought never crossed his mind that he was being selfish.
I’m only giving examples of two incidences however, the same situation happens all the time and in small ways every day. Another big one is that if I want to talk about my day, he’ll listen but it never seems like he has any genuine interest but he is so excited to tell me about everything on his mind. I am conflicted because my boyfriend does love me he always tells me he’s going to marry me, however, he is just immature and hasn’t grown up to build emotional intelligence. In every other way, other than this aspect, he is perfect, he has never raised his voice at me and always tries to be better. The problem is that every time I bring this issue up, I can tell he feels very bad, but he doesn’t really really understand where I’m coming from since he has always been this way I’m guessing. How am I supposed to effectively teach him how to be emotionally intelligent or is this something he hast to find out on his own?
TLDR: my boyfriend is very emotionally unintelligent and it is making me want to end things. I don’t know how to communicate this problem to him.

I’m 33+1 (FTM) and had a weird consultant appointment today. They were running really behind and I ended up seeing someone else. I was a bit annoyed but wanted to see how the appointment went so let this other guy crack on.
He didn’t know why I had this appointment booked so I said that at my last midwife appointment I told her I wanted a c section so thought this appointment was to discuss my c section. He looked at me super confused.
This guy then asked if I’d seen the birthing person they have at the hospital and I said no but I’d made my mind up about a c section months ago.
He then realised I was 33 weeks and just straight up asked why I want a c section and said something along the lines of ‘it’s all politics now’
As I was about to tell him why I wanted a c section he said he’ll actually quickly go and speak to the consultant I was supposed to be seeing and left the room.
So I’m sat there really confused but fully prepared to tell him why I want a c section and fight my corner for one.
He comes back in, doesn’t say a word to me and phones some woman. Then they’re booking in dates and stuff and it took me a sec to realise he’s booking in my c section!! The phone call ends and he starts typing stuff up.
So I’m like …. Can I assume that you’ve just booked in the section for me? And he’s like ‘yeah all done’.
So I’m like ???? Will I get this in a letter or something? He says no, make a note of the date and time now. Gives me the date and time for going there the day before for what I assume is consent forms and a pre-op type thing. And then the time to go there the next day for my section.
Totally bizarre appointment but I got my c section date and it’s in exactly 6 weeks time. So I’ve got loads of time to prepare mentally now and sort my hospital bag.
I wonder if my weird appointment was a one off or if anyone else has had weird appointments like me.

Today I want to introduce a new PSOBB server that some of you might be interested on, specially if you are a former retail USBB or JPBB player or a diehard vanilla player, it's called 'Kiyomizu PSO BB' and today I've decided to open it to the public after running it in a testing capacity these last 7 months or so.
This server aims to make the PSOBB experience as simple as possible, by offering only the original base game and the official quests and features that SEGA had active at the time of the official JPBB servers shutdown. It also acts like a testing ground for the newserv software which emulates all PSO versions online components created by fuzziqersoftware but specifically in the BB side of things in this case.
By keeping the game in its original untouched state we are aiming for the maximum accuracy for archival purposes which in turn retroactively feeds the newserv project as a whole.
If you are curious about PSOBB, never got the chance to play Episode 4, want to start fresh, or want to know how the game server behaved for us back in the retail days, feel free to check it out its open and running 24/7.
Setup Instructions
Download the official SEGA client and install it (make a backup of this installer too as its the original untouched client of the latest official build)

What I was doing was risky.
I kept thinking this, as I prepared to spring the idea I worked on. I had Samantha and Carlos look into acquiring a shuttlecraft, for the purposes of infiltrating Aafa. It took a day and a half longer than the UN's initial start date, but I promised them it was worth it. They believed that, and set to work on getting one through their few Venlil resources in the UN. Now that it was in my hands, I was on a trip to Aafa, alone, with no backup or human handlers to my name. They believed I wasn't a flight risk...a mistake on their part, but in a way, I was still performing their goal.
I was still suspicious of Federation governance, even before the humans took stage on the galactic scene. The Sivkit's refugee crisis turnaway, the Krakotl's military extortionate practice, the Federation was full of shady characters who ought to be exposed. I was even working on a source towards what I thought was frivolous and mismanaged Kolshian military spending budgets, but it was interrupted by the human's arrival, and I had set it to the wayside.
Though, neither of those were supposedly leaked by 'me'. Cilany was the one who put it into proper public eye, even if I was her source...
How I wish I could have her here with me, her sharp skill for coercion and interrogation of valuable info in interrogation and interview alike. But the colony she was on was under siege by the Arxur, who struck while the Federation fleet had gone to Earth. All the more fuel for the fire of my suspicions...
I could only hope that Cilany, and by extension the rest of the people there would hold out despite their actions against the humans. None deserved the Arxur thrust upon them.
It would have been far too risky to try and stop by a planet under siege by the Arxur. I would be, at best, blown to smithereens without hesitation, and at worst...eugh...don't think about it, don't think about it!
Plus, I didn't want to give any human assets an idea on my plans currently. I was already going behind their back on this, betraying their trust on this front.
If my hunch is correct, then the Arxur might be coordinating with them, and by extension, feeding info about Federation homeworlds back in their twisted little game. Seeing me pop up in a report would turn heads.
I'm sorry Humanity, but this is for your own good. You cannot trust the Arxur, and the only way we can prevent your manipulation by their Dominion is through convincing a proper attack on them from the Greater Commonwealth.
But now, I found myself on a course to Aafa, alone, all on my lonesome, seeking to do something akin to Noah, but to the most powerful person in the galaxy one-on-one...Nikonus. I felt my ability to pull rank and my reputation would precede me better than the predatory reception of humanity, even though they didn't deserve it. This was a pragmatic decision, not an emotional one…
The trip was not very eventful, roughly [6 days] one way in a ship with as underpowered of a FTL drive as this, but I was trying to sell an infiltration mission, not a courier one. I wouldn't have my claws on anything top-of-the-line for speed in a shuttle. But as my ship hit disruptor fields in-system, and I got a ping from Gunships asking for classic hailing codes, intent to visit, and the like, I sent a message that likely would have shocked their crew.
"This is Captain Sovlin of Federation Fleet Command. I have escaped human custody, and need to request an audience with Nikonus."

I walked the outer rungs of the capital gardens, looking for relief to the mounds of bureaucratic paperwork back in-office. A good walk could clear ones mind of most stresses every now and then, and given the circumstances nowadays, I think a longer one is in order.
The Affliaf blooms are quite vibrant today. That's a good omen, for what it's worth...
With the state of the galaxy in a comprehensive deadlock over what to do with humanity, I had to take to some under-the-table talks with Nishtal's military. While the Kolshian Commonwealth was not publically for humanity's invitation into the Federation, they were clearly vocal that they did not wish for the problem to be removed, so to speak. And so, I had to get my tentacles dirty planting seeds of inspiration to some military leaders in and around the Krakotl Alliance. They, thankfully took the predator threat as seriously as they ought to, and mobilized to rid ourselves of the pests.
It should have simply ended there. Humanity should have been exterminated, status quo restored, the whole cropland tilled. But no, a fleet of twenty-thousand failed to even kill a fledgling space-faring species like humanity! Even with the Venlil Space Corps on their side, the battle should have been a wash! And the worst part, was that the true believers on Venlil Prime were giving me garbage intelligence on the matter.
'A ship of unknown origin swooped in and saved humanity? One that was unheard of up to this point'? No, a wad of ectolan spulk, there was no chance it was humanity keeping something in reserve that could even the tide! They likely were feeding false data to their allies, the manipulative little apes. No, humanity being saved stunk of the Dominion's play, and that was worrisome.
Did Giznel and his lackeys go back on our deal, seeing blood in the water? I knew we groomed a deal out of Betterment that'd give them all the wrong ideas...
Needless to say, I had to now figure out where to start on approaching them and confirming our deal was still on the table, and to cease and desist assistance with humanity at once. If they didn't want to play ball anymore, we'd have to consider some Shadow Fleet excursions to pave a path for a public route to invasion. That would change the whole dynamic of the Federation's control structures, and was absolutely not the path this great galactic Commonwealth should go.
So now, I am stuck in a dilemma. Do I assume Giznel and the Dominion are still in on the deal, and haven't made allies with humanity in the backdrop, or do I take the only opportunity we get, and start mounting an offensive while the Dominion's unprepared.
Decisions, decisions...
Not long into my musings, an aide contacted me over holo-prompt. Odd, I didn't have anything scheduled this soon, and central planning proceedings weren't set to start up again until the following day, what was it?...
"Chief Nikonus. There's been a development on the outer edge of the system. Bulwark Patrol states that a shuttlecraft of Venlil-make warped in, one individual alone on scans. They identified itself as Captain Sovlin, seeking refuge from human captivity."
Oh dear. That's not anything I could have expected. The last thing I need right now is more complications...but that wording...
"Why hasn't he been boarded and processed yet? I am hardly the first authority to come to for a asylum dispute."
"He asked for you specifically, your graciousness. Said to request an audience with utmost urgency."
"Is that so?...Hmm." I am currently free of responsibilities for a solid chunk of time. While I did not know Sovlin personally, his record spoke for himself. If he truly was escaping human custody, it was likely he found something out about them that they shared by accident, not knowing he wasn't loyal to them.
If he's come here for the reason I think he might've, there's a very real chance...
"Send him my way as soon as possible then. He's lucky I can spare an audience now."
...that said opportunity has just walked itself right into my garden.

There was thankfully little fanfare or media attention in bringing my shuttle in. The decision to come alone clearly disarmed their initial worries of human sympathizing or terrorist actions, and soon enough, I found myself amongst an escort of soldiers to Aslou's government district.
I had been to Aafa various times throughout my life. In my tenure as captain, you tend to visit the homeworlds of the larger species at least once in a lifetime, if not several. Most times were not very exciting or noteworthy...but this time, the visit felt downright off.
The gardens were as beautiful as ever, but there were little walking them. The Songbedas were oddly quiet, making an unsettling atmosphere. The population out in the outer and medial rungs of the city split to make way for my escort, as if expecting trouble on their doorstep should they draw attention.
Given what happened with humanity, I wouldn't put it past them. Why is it so...empty?
It was forced to be pushed aside as we finally reached the inner rings of the Capitol Spire. A gleam ran up into the heavens, and a sequence of block outcroppings spun around the structure, green architecture patterns spiraled up and up. It was a beautiful idol of the dedication of megalithic engineering and urban planning of the Kolshian Commonwealth. Under any other circumstances, I would have once felt comfortable walking under its shadow, but now I felt only unease at being in its monolithic shade.
Across from us, not far up the steps leading to the Capitol Spire, was Nikonus and his guards. They were clearly waiting for me. Nikonus looked pleased to see me, somehow. Was there no clear indicator...?
Does he trust my cover?
"Captain Sovlin, your reputation precedes you! I could have sworn you were interred so deep you weren't getting out. Yet, you say you broke out?"
Here goes nothing. Make it believable, Sovlin...
"I...yes, your graciousness. After I was imprisoned on Venlil Prime, the humans kept trying to get me to turn on the Federation. They were convincing, but my loyalties ultimately lie in this government, Chief Nikonus." I put my chest into the last bit of the statement, trying to give emphasis.
He seemed to mull on that for a split second, before he made a gesture to follow him. "We may talk more about your escape inside. I assume what you have meant to say to me is not for public ears?" He glanced about, subtly tilting his head out at the few gathered crowds out and about Aslou's Capitol District. Given how open and flat the area was, with the slightest elevation, you could practically see for [kilometers].
He was right on that. My suspicions would not be for the general public to hear, lest it cause a panic. "Yes. It would not do for the media to run wild with. It could cause unrest."
The Kolshian's eyes seemed to glint at that. "On that, you and I can agree. Come, to my offices." Him and his troop started up the stairs, and I followed soon after, my 'escorts' following closely behind. I could not yet tell whether I was actually in good trust with Chief Nikonus, or whether he was playing up the kindly elder act. Politicians were always shifty like that...
We walked a long way, took several lifts to reach the original Kolshian suites of the Capitol Spire. Passing through halls of elaborate aquatic decor, and indoor habitats, we approached our destination: Chief Nikonus' personal office.
He waved away all but two guards to stand outside the office, as we walked in. As he sat down, and the door closed, the visual look of the Kolshian shifted. His old, elderly demeanor sharpened to a politics-honed edge. The tone of the room felt far more off.

Alt account just in case. I fucking hate my best friend. We’ve been friends since first grade, and now we’re seniors in high school. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re going to slowly drift away after graduating. He talks constantly about us being friends after graduating, and even told someone that he knows I’d let him live in my basement when times get tough for him (I absolutely would not).
To put it simple, he’s a piece of shit. He’s racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, and just fucking annoying. He simultaneously rarely forms his own opinions, but also wants to act like a “lone wolf”. He has anger issues and gets pissed off at the slightest criticism, even if you just tell him he’s doing something wrong (we’re in a cooking class right now and we cook together in a group. if he does something wrong- which he does often- and you correct him, he gets pissed off at you and leaves the room to smoke in the bathroom). His own parents have asked me on multiple occasions to just… Help him. They never elaborate on what they mean, but I know. Fix him, fix his mindset I guess. He doesn’t listen to them, he doesn’t listen to anyone. He’s been this way for forever, but I think he’s gotten worse lately. He’s gotten therapy and said he hated it (presumably because the therapist told him he’s wrong about something and he got pissed off).
But… I’d feel terrible if I ditched him. For most of my life, he’s been my only friend. Over quarantine he was the only person I talked to most of the time. He’s a terrible person, but he’s a good friend. He pay for stuff for me all the time (both of us are poor, but I’m poor-er than him), and I probably owe him hundreds of dollars.

Hi all, sitting the June 24 SBL exam and just wanted to see how others are preparing for the exam and looking to get any tips.
I have currently done 3 timed mocks ( 2 without notes) and scored over 70% on these.
Reviewed all chapters in the integrated workbook (Kaplan)
Now I’m working through the suggested exam kit questions but finding these don’t really seem to be in the same format as the exam questions.
I will be reviewing/ analysing the pre seen information tomorrow too.
Just wanted to see how others are preparing for the exam or if you have any further tips for revision to share ?

2024.05.21 20:22 justamanhehe How much time is required to prepare for CAT? An Explainer

Is it the right time to start preparing for the CAT24? What about those who started early? what about those stories about those start even late.
I get these questions a lot of times. And CAT is quite an interesting exam in the sense that the number of days you prepare for it tell absolutely nothing about your preparation stage.
I usually get two kind of queries. First is asking if this month or that month is right time to start and prepare. Second one is number of hours required to prepare for CAT. Both are inherently wrong questions with no possible right answers. For months, I tend to say that CAT can also be cracked within 4 months or less if you inherently have some aptitude, even if that doesn't reflect in the first few mocks you take. And for hours, I usually suggest that if you start from scratch, approximately 1000 hours is what you are looking at. [200 hours per section to prepare i.e. 600 hours, 50 mocks with 6 hours each i.e. 300 hours of mocks (6 hours because mock + solve the entire paper + analysis) and another 100 hours for revision and making notes etc.]
Both of my answers (any such other answers) are actually partially wrong and misleading. I'm making this post to give you the real answer.
CAT Preparation needs to be done in three phases. In Phase One, you need to build your basic knowledge structure. This varies with sectionals and I'll explain for each section.
VARC Phase 1
Here, your basic knowledge structure involves,
  1. understanding the pattern of exam.
  2. Having a strategy for the exam (RC first then VA or VA first then RC, whatever works for you). Remember that whatever strategy you pick, you need to know why that particular strategy and not something else. If you don't know, it's best to start from question 1 and go to the end.
For me, I needed to read RCs first to get in flow, but I needed to be very attentive in VA. so I would do 2 RCs to get in flow, go to VA when I'm hyper focused, come back to other 2 RCs to end the section on a good note (VA was my weakness)
See how I personalized this based on when I'm most active and what's my weakness and what's my strength. You need to do the same for yourself. Don't try to sit and make it. I'll come naturally to you. If it doesn't come, It means you are comfortable with going in any order. That's good.
  1. Having the ability to understand the passage.
Some people have this inherently. Most people have this in some subjects (like science) and don't have in it other subjects (like philosophy). While a few of you don't have it at all.
What you need to make sure is, when you read the passage, did you understand the entire passage like what exactly was the passage trying to say?
That's all for VARC Phase 1..
DILR Phase 1
This is fairly simple. Just go through different types of DILR questions. (If you are following my guide, just complete the rodha playlist I had attached there)
Quant Phase 1
Do a few arithmetic chapters. 3-4 basic chapters like Time Speed Distance, Ratio and proportions, Averages, Mixtures and allegations etc.
After doing this phase, here comes the phase 2 of your preparation.
VARC Phase 2
Here you need to go through different types of RCs and questions. Understand your shortcomings. Understand what mistakes you are making. (If You are following VARC1000, finishing it concludes phase 2)
DILR Phase 2
Here you develop your symbols and signs. You learn which table/diagram to make in which question. Like I would always represent certain things with some symbols (Circle for males, underline for females etc) So you kind of develop your own representation in this phase.
Quant Phase 2
In this phase, you finish your quants syllabus. It is here that many people decide whether to go for arithmetic algebra and geometry or go for arithmetic and algebra only or maybe add a number system. Whatever is the combination you wanna go with.
With conclusion of this phase, you stop practicing quants chapter by chapter all together.
VARC Phase 3
This is the final phase where you just keep giving mocks, analyse them and look for the mistakes you are doing. Did you read the question wrong? Did you miss some word in paragraph? were you stressed? were you hurrying? were you distracted? This phase ends whenever CAT happens. Else it just continues.
DILR Phase 3
Here you learn what set to select. Set selection is the core of DILR. you basically learn how to choose what set to attempt and which one to leave. This phase never ends, because you just need to keep on practicing. So it continues till CAT
Quant Phase 3
Here also you learn which question to attempt and which question to leave and what silly mistakes are you doing. This also continues till the CAT exam day.
Now let's try to see how much time should it take (in hours)
VARC Phase 1: Could be anything from 1 hour to 50 hours of rigorous reading or even more. DILR Phase 1: Should take considerable time. Around 50 to 80 hours on average but again could take more or less. Quant Phase 1: Depends on how good you are inherently at calculations. Do you need to remember 19×7 or you know it already? Do you remember value of 210? Do you recall formula for compound interest?
VARC Phase 2: You might understand your mistakes and fix them within a week and might not be able to do so after 8 months of preparation. Again entirely depends on you.
DILR Phase 2: How long does it take for you to understand which data should be represented by which diagram and which table? No one can tell you. You would find out yourself.
Quant Phase 2: This is something predictable and takes most of the time. But again this varies. Someone doing Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry, Probably, Number System would take more time as someone going with Arithmetic and Algebra only. Some people do only Arithmetic and Algebra, get a very high strike rate of getting questions right and score good in QA. Others complete the syllabus and pick and choose the easiest questions in the paper. They also score well. Some do both, they are God level. So again, time taken here varies.
VARC, DILR, and Quant Phase 3
This phase continues till the exam comes. For some people, this phase is very long so that's how you find people who gave 70+ mock tests. But this phase is just about finding mistakes and not repeating them in the CAT exam so this phase could also yield results with 30 odd mocks. Again varies from person to person.
And now, you understand why it is stupid to answer if you are starting in the right month or how many hours it takes. The sooner you learn from your mistakes, the less time it will take. How quickly would you learn from your mistakes? Nobody knows. That's why you see cases with 3 CAT attempts and can't score more than 90 percentile, and scored 99%ile with 2 to 4 months of preparation.
The best way to go about this is, either you would learn from your mistakes quickly and hence you should attempt CAT 24, or you need a lot of time to learn, in which case you give CAT24 and then CAT25 in case you feel that's needed.

Passed D206 with no revisions. It took about a week. I read the rubric and literally took about 2 days to wrap my mind around how tedious it seemed to be before I got started on any work. I saw something a while ago where someone said they wished they had just chosen the Churn data set from the beginning and stuck with it. That made me think that the Churn data set was the only consistent data set throughout the program. So I chose the Churn data set for D205 but then I saw instructions in this course to choose the opposite of what you chose in D205. Looking back, I think that was likely a suggestion and not a mandate. Regardless, I chose the medical data set and would like to stick with this one for the remainder of the program because I have medical background anyway.
I was looking forward to this course because every training I've ever taken on data analysis has stated how crucial data cleaning is and then spends very little time actually showing how to clean the data. So I learned a decent amount from this course that I had never been exposed to before. Even simple things like learning that there is a "category" datatype in pandas. I've used pandas very regularly for the last 2 years and never knew this! I didn't know about any advanced imputation methods or various means of assessing how to handle missing data. I had never heard of PCA before. But my goodness am I glad it's over because I really hated the format of the PA.
Resources used:
The PA wasn't really hard. I just really didn't like the fact that I had to talk about how I was going to assess the data quality, then later justify why I was going to go that route, then explain why I was choosing Python. Then assess the data quality but not actually do any cleaning, then talk about the issues I found, then justify why I was going to take action regarding the cleaning, then say what was going to happen when I cleaned the data, then actually clean the data... etc.. etc.. It's so counter to the way I solve problems and very inefficient. I guess I can understand why it's set up that way but I really spent more time being annoyed about breaking everything out in a non-intuitive way than anything else. I also went down some pretty useless rabbit holes regarding how to handle certain variables based on domain knowledge. I knew at the time that they were useless rabbit holes but sometimes the self-diagnosed ADHD in me really enjoys going that route anyway. Thankfully the PA was accepted on the first attempt with no revisions. I took a couple days off and started on D207. Just submitted it today so maybe I'll have another review soon.
