When you hit
Just sharing because I haven't shared a blocking video in a while. Sharika just snuck up on my FYP. For those who don't know, she's a divested former Ghetto Gagger. I also blocked her after hitting not interested too. I just realized I should have hit "4b" too, but my algorithm has been great for a year+ now on TikTok. And regardless of how you feel about me, remember to block these people who hate us, guys. Don't engage or indulge in their content. Have a blessed day.

No one shows their truly ugly before, so here’s mine (read body text, yes it still looks like this…for now)
So this my bathroom. It’s disgusting and I hate it 🙃
The previous tenants lived here for ten years. They cleaned absolutely, positively nothing, and they also did not keep up with maintenance. The landlord was basically a slumlord and also kept up with nothing. The previous owner was family, and I used to live on the other side of this duplex with my mom, so that’s how I know he didn’t do anything to keep the place nice. There was one incident where I was smelling electrical fire and told him and he hemmed and hawed until I flat out said either get here immediately or I’ll call the fire department. Turns out he’d put the wrong size filter in the furnace and it was about to burn :) great huh?
The previous tenants were also addicts and verbally and physically abusive to each other, harassed and threatened my mother, and said they’d kill her dogs. I had already moved out by this point, so we hatched a plan for her to purchase it, evict them, and move me in on this side. After months of work, there’s still more work to be done. I can do a lot of painting and renovating myself because of the circumstances. Today I fixed the shower so I finally have a working one, and I’m cleaning it up. I also just chose paint colors. I have no idea when I’ll actually get to it, but when I have money to spend, I’ll be painting. I’ll also fix around the tub area and eventually replace the vanity and mirromedicine cabinet, as well as get actual curtains instead of this ghetto setup lol
Just wanted to show an actual fixer upper in pre fixed up days. Last slide are the colors I chose for the wall and trim

2024.05.16 05:06 MirkWorks Excerpt from The Culture of Narcissism by Christopher Lasch (Changing Modes of Making It: From Horatio Alger to the Happy Hooker)

III. Changing Modes of Making It: From Horatio Alger to the Happy Hooker

From “Self-Culture” to Self-Promotion through “Winning Images”
In the nineteenth century, the ideal of self-improvement degenerated into a cult of compulsive industry. P.T. Barnum, who made a fortune in a calling the very nature of which the Puritans would have condemned (“Every calling, whereby God will be Dishonored; every Calling whereby none but the Lusts of men are Nourished: …every such Calling is to be Rejected”), delivered many times a lecture frankly entitled “The Art of Money-Getting,” which epitomized the nineteenth-century conception of worldly success. Barnum quoted freely from Franklin but without Franklin’s concern for the attainment of wisdom or the promotion of useful knowledge. “Information” interested Barnum merely as a means of mastering the market. Thus he condemned the “false economy” of the farm wife who douses her candle at dusk rather than lighting another for reading, not realizing that the “information” gained through reading is worth far more than the price of the candles. “Always take a trustworthy newspaper,” Barnum advised young men on the make, “and thus keep thoroughly posted in regard to the transactions of the world. He who is without a newspaper is cut off from his species.”
Barnum valued the good opinion of others not as a sign of one’s usefulness but as a means of getting credit. “Uncompromising integrity of character is invaluable.” The nineteenth century attempted to express all values in monetary terms. Everything had its price. Charity was a moral duty because “the liberal man will command patronage, which the sordid, uncharitable miser will be avoided.” The sin of pride was not that it offended God but that it led to extravagant expenditures. “A spirit of pride and vanity, when permitted to have full sway, is the undying cankerworm which gnaws the very vitals of a man’s worldly possessions.”
The eighteenth century made a virtue of temperance but did not condemn moderate indulgence in the service of sociability. “Rational conversation,” on the contrary, appeared to Franklin and his contemporaries to represent an important value in its own right. The nineteenth century condemned sociability itself, on the grounds that it might interfere with business. “How many good opportunities have passed, never to return, while a man was sipping a ‘social glass’ with his friends!” Preachments on self-help now breathed the spirit of compulsive enterprise. Henry Ward Beecher defined “the beau ideal of happiness” as a state of mind in which “a man [is] so busy that he does not know whether he is or is not happy.” Russell Sage remarked that “work has been the chied, and you might say, the only source of pleasure in my life.”
Even at the height of the Gilded Age, however, the Protestant ethic did not completely lose its original meaning. In the success manuals, the McGuffey readers, the Peter Parley Books, and the hortatory writings of the great capitalists themselves, the Protestant virtues - industry, thrift, temperance - still appeared not merely as stepping-stones to success but as their own reward.
The spirit of self-improvement lived on, in debased form, in the cult of “self-culture” - proper care and training of mind and body, nurture of the mind through “great books,” development of “character.” The social contribution of individual accumulation still survived as an undercurrent in the celebration of success, and the social conditions of early industrial capitalism, in which the pursuit of wealth undeniably increased the supply of useful objects, gave some substance to the claim that “accumulated capital means progress.” In condemning speculation and extravagance, in upholding the importance of patient industry, in urging young men to start at the bottom and submit to “the discipline of daily life,” even the most unabashed exponents of self-enrichment clung to the notion that wealth derives its value from its contribution to the general good and to the happiness of future generations.
The nineteenth-century cult of success placed surprisingly little emphasis on competition. It measured achievement not against the achievements of others but against an abstract ideal of discipline and self-denial. At the turn of the century, however, preachments on success began to stress the will to win. The bureaucratization of the corporate career changed the conditions of self-advancement; ambitious young men now had to compete with their peers for the attention and approval of their superiors. The struggle to surpass the previous generation and to provide for the next gave way to a form of sibling rivalry, in which men of approximately equal abilities jostled against each other in competition for a limited number of places. Advancement now depended on “will-power, self-confidence, energy, and initiative” - the qualities celebrated in such exemplary writings as George Lorimer’s Letters from a Self-Made Merchant to His Son. ” By the end of the nineteenth century,” writes John Cawelti in his study of the success myth, “self-help books were dominated by the ethos of sales-manship and boosterism. Personal magnetism, a quality which supposedly enabled a man to influence and dominate others, became one of the major keys to success.” In 1907, both Lorimer’s Saturday Evening Post and Orison Swett Marden’s Success magazine inaugurated departments of instruction in the “art of conversation,” fashion, and “culture.” The management of interpersonal relations came to be seen as the essence of self-advancement. The captain of industry gave way to the confidence man, the master of impressions. Young men were told that they had to sell themselves in order to succeed.
At first, self-testing through competition remained almost in-distinguishable from moral self-discipline and self-culture, but the difference became unmistakable when Dale Carnegie and then Norman Vincent Peale restated and transformed the tradition of Mather, Franklin, Barnum, and Lorimer. As a formula for success, winning friends and influencing people had little in common with industry and thrift. The prophets of positive thinking disparaged “the old adage that hard work alone is the magic key that will unlock the door to our desires.” They praised the love of money, officially condemned even by the crudest of Gilded Age materialists, as a useful incentive. “You can never have riches in great quantities,” wrote Napoleon Hill in this Think and Grow Rich,” unless you can work yourself into a white heat of desire for money.” The pursuit of wealth lost the few shreds of moral meaning that still clung to it. Formerly the Protestant virtues appeared to have an independent value of their own. Even when they became purely instrumental, in the second half of the nineteenth century, success itself retained moral and social overtones, by virtue of its contribution to the sum of human comfort and progress. Now success appeared as an end in its own right, the victory over your competitors that alone retained the capacity to instill a sense of self-approval. The latest success manuals differ from earlier ones - even surpassing the cynicism of Dale Carnegie and Peale - in their frank acceptance of the need to exploit and intimidate others, in their lack of interest in the substance of success, and in the candor with which they insist that appearances - “winning images - count for more than performance, ascription for more than achievement. One author seems to imply that the self consists of little more than its “image” reflected in others’ eyes. “Although I’m not being original when I say it, I’m sure you’ll agree that the way you see yourself will reflect the image you portray to others.” Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.
<The American Religion by Harold Bloom (California Orphism)>
The Apotheosis of Individualism
The fear that haunted the social critics and theorists of the fifties - that rugged individualism had succumbed to conformity and “love-pressure sociability” - appears in retrospect to have been premature. In 1960, David Riesman complained that young people no longer had much social “presence,” their education having provided them not with “a polished personality but [with] an affable, casual, adaptable one, suitable to the losing organizations of an affluent society.” It is true that “a present-oriented hedonism,” as Riseman went on the argue, has replaced the work ethic “among the very classes which in the earlier stages of industrialization were oriented toward the future, toward distant goals and delayed gratification.” But this hedonism is a fraud; the pursuit of pleasure disguises a struggle for power. Americans have not really become more sociable and cooperative, as the theorists of other-direction and conformity would like us to believe; they have merely become more adept at exploiting the conventions of interpersonal relations for their own benefit. Activities ostensibly undertaken purely for enjoyment often have the real object of doing others in. It is symptomatic of the underlying tenor of American life that vulgar terms for sexual intercourse also convey the sense of getting the better of someone, working him over, taking him in, imposing your will through guile, deception, or superior force. Verbs associated with sexual pleasure have acquired more than the usual overtones of violence and psychic exploitation. In the violent world of the ghetto, the language of which now pervades American society as a whole, the violence associated with sexual intercourse is directed with special intensity by men against women, specifically against their mothers. The language of ritualized aggression and abuse reminds those who use it that exploitation is the general rule and some form of dependence the common fate, that “the individual,” in Lee Rainwater’s words, “is not strong enough or adult enough to achieve his goal in a legitimate way, but is rather like a child, dependent on others who tolerate his childish maneuvers”; accordingly males, even adult males, often depend on women for support and nurture. Many of them have to pimp for a living, ingratiating themselves with a woman in order to pry money from her; sexual relations thus become manipulative and predatory. Satisfaction depends on taking what you want instead of waiting for what is rightfully yours to receive. All this enters everyday speech in language that connects sex with aggression and sexual aggression with highly ambivalent feelings about mothers.
In some ways middle-class society has become a pale copy of the black ghetto, as the appropriation of its language would lead us to believe. We do not need to minimize the poverty of the ghetto or the suffering inflicted by whites on blacks in order to see that the increasingly dangerous and unpredictable conditions of middle-class life have given rise to similar strategies for survival. Indeed the attraction of black culture for disaffected whites suggests that black culture now speaks to a general condition, the most important feature of which is a widespread loss of confidence in the future. The poor have always had to live for the present, but now a desperate concern for personal survival, sometimes disguised as hedonism, engulfs the middle class as well. Today almost everyone lives in a dangerous world from which there is little escape. International terrorism and blackmail, bombings, and hijackings arbitrarily affect the rich and poor alike. Crime, violence, and gang wars make cities unsafe and threaten to spread to the suburbs. Racial violence on the streets and in the schools creates an atmosphere of chronic tension and threatens to erupt at any time into full-scale racial conflict. Unemployment spreads from the poor the white-collar class, while inflation eats away the savings of those who hoped to retire in comfort. Much of what is euphemistically known as the middle class, merely because it dresses up to go to work, is now reduced to proletarian conditions of existence. Many white-collar jobs require no more skill and pay even less than blue-collar jobs, conferring little status or security. The propaganda of death and destruction, emanating ceaselessly from the mass media, adds to the prevailing atmosphere of insecurity. Far-flung famines, earthquakes in remote regions, distant wars and uprisings attract the same attention as events closer to home. The impression of arbitrariness in the reporting of disaster reinforces the arbitrary quality of experience itself, and the absence of continuity in the coverage of events, as today’s crisis yields to a new and unrelated crisis tomorrow, adds to the sense of historical discontinuity - the sense of living in a world in which the past holds out no guidance to the present and the future has become completely unpredictable.
Older conceptions of success presupposed a world in rapid motion, in which fortunes were rapidly won and lost and new opportunities unfolded every day. Yet they also presupposed a certain stability, a future that bore some recognizable resemblance to the present and the past. The growth of bureaucracy, the cult of consumption with its immediate gratifications, but above all the severance of the sense of historical continuity have transformed the Protestant ethic while carrying the underlying principles of capitalist society to their logical conclusion . The pursuit of self-interest, formerly identified with the rational pursuit of gain and the accumulation of wealth, has become a search for pleasure and psychic survival. Social conditions now approximate the vision of republican society conceived by the Marquis de Sade at the very outset of the republican epoch. In many ways the most farsighted and certainly the most disturbing of the prophets of revolutionary individualism, Sade defended unlimited self-indulgence as the logical culmination of the revolution in property relations - the only way to attain revolutionary brotherhood in its purest form. By regressing in his writings to the most primitive level of fantasy, Sade uncannily glimpsed the whole subsequent development of personal life under capitalism, ending not in revolutionary brotherhood but in a society of siblings that has outlived and repudiated its revolutionary origins.
Sade imagined a sexual utopia in which everyone has the right to everyone else, where human beings, reduced to their sexual organs, become absolutely anonymous and interchangeable. His ideal society thus reaffirmed the capitalist principle that human beings are ultimately reducible to interchangeable objects. It also incorporated and carried to a surprising new conclusion Hobbes’s discovery that the destruction of paternalism and the subordination of all social relations to the market had stripped away the remaining restraints and the mitigating illusions from the war of all against all. In the resulting state of organized anarchy, as Sade was the first to realize, pleasure becomes life’s only business - pleasure, however, that is indistinguishable from rape, murder, unbridled aggression. In a society that has reduced reason to mere calculation, reason can impose no limits on the pursuit of pleasure - on the immediate gratification of every desire no matter how perverse, insane, criminal, or merely immoral. For the standards that would condemn crime or cruelty derive from religion, compassion, or the kind of reason that rejects purely instrumental applications; and none of these outmoded forms of thought or feeling has any logical place in a society based on commodity production. In his misogyny, Sade perceived that bourgeois enlightenment, carried to its logical conclusions, condemned even the sentimental cult of womanhood and the family, which the bourgeoisie itself had carried to unprecedented extremes.
At the same time, he saw that condemnation of “woman-worship” had to go hand in hand with a defense of woman’s sexual rights - their right to dispose of their own bodies, as feminists would put it today. If the exercise of that right in Sade’s utopia boils down to the duty to become an instrument of someone else’s pleasure, it was not so much because Sade hated women as because he hated humanity. He perceived, more clearly than the feminists, that all freedoms under capitalism come in the end to the same thing, the same universal obligation to enjoy and be enjoyed. In the same breath, and without violating his own logic, Sade demanded for women the right “fully to satisfy all their desires” and “all parts of their bodies” and categorically stated that “all women must submit to our pleasure.” Pure individualism thus issued in the most radical repudiation of individuality. “All men, all women resemble each other,” according to Sade; and to those of his countrymen who would become republicans he adds this ominous warning: “Do not think you can make good republicans so long as you isolated in their families the children who should belong to the republic alone.” The bourgeois defense of privacy culminates - not just in Sade’s thought but in the history to come, so accurately foreshadowed in the very excess, madness, infantilism of his ideas - in the most thoroughgoing attack on privacy; the glorification of the individual, in his annihilation.

I said when the lights shut off And it's my turn to settle down My main concern Promise that you will sing about me Promise that you will sing about me
I woke up this morning and figured I'd call you In case I'm not here tomorrow, I'm hoping that I can borrow A peace of mind, I'm behind on what's really important My mind is really distorted, I find nothing but trouble in my life I'm fortunate you believe in a dream This orphanage we call a ghetto is quite a routine And last night was just another distraction or a reaction Of what we consider madness, I know exactly what happened You ran outside when you heard my brother cry for help Held him like a newborn baby and made him feel Like everything was alright and a fight he tried to put up But the type of bullet that stuck had went against his will As blood spilled on your hands, my plans rather vindictive Everybody's a victim in my eyes When I ride, it's a murderous rhythm and outside became pitch black A demon glued to my back whispering, "Get 'em" I got 'em, and I ain't give a fuck That same mentality that told my brother not to duck In actuality, it's a trip how we trip off of colors I wonder if I'll ever discover a passion like you and recover The life that I knew as a young'n in pajamas and dun-ta-duns When thunder comes it rains cats and dogs Dumb niggas like me never prosper Prognosis of a problem child, I'm proud and well devoted This piru shit been in me forever So forever I'mma push it, wherever, whenever And I love you 'cause you love my brother like you did Just promise me you'll tell this story when you make it big And if I die before your album drop, I hope (gunshots)
Promise that you will sing about me Promise that you will sing about me I said when the lights shut off And it's my turn to settle down My main concern Promise that you will sing about me Promise that you will sing about me
You wrote a song about my sister on your tape And called it Section.80, the message resembled "Brenda's Got a Baby" What's crazy was, I was hearing about it But doubted your ignorance how could you ever just put her on blast and shit Judging her past and shit, well, it's completely my future Her nigga behind me right now asking for ass and shit And I'mma need that forty dollars even if I gotta Fuck, suck and swallow in the parking lot Gonzales Park, I'm followed by a married man, a father of three My titties bounce on the cadence of his tinkling keys Matter of fact, he my favorite 'cause he tip me with E's He got a cousin named David and I seen him last week This is the life of another girl damaged by the system These foster homes, I run away and never do miss 'em See, my hormones just run away and if I can get 'em back To where they used to be then I'll probably be in the denim Of a family gene that show women how to be woman Or better yet, a leader, you need her to learn somethin' Then you probably need to beat her, that's how I was taught Three niggas in one room, first time I was tossed And I'm exhausted, but fuck that "Sorry for your loss" shit My sister died in vain, but what point are you trying to gain If you can't fit the pumps I walk in? I'll wait Your rebuttal a little too late And if you have a album date, just make sure I'm not in the song 'Cause I don't need the attention bring enough of that on my own And matter fact, did I mention that I physically feel great? A doctor's approval is a waste of time, I know I'm straight I'll probably live longer than you and never fade away I'll never fade away, I'll never fade away, I know my fate And I'm on the grind for this cake, I'mma get it or die trying I'm eyeing every male gender with intentions of buying You lying to these motherfuckers, talking about you can help 'em With my story, you can help me if you sell this pussy for me, nigga Don't ignore me, nigga, fuck your glory, nigga...
When the lights shut off And it's my turn to settle down My main concern Promise that you will sing about me Promise that you will sing about me I said when the lights shut off And it's my turn to settle down My main concern Promise that you will sing about me Promise that you will sing about me
Sometimes I look in a mirror and ask myself: Am I really scared of passing away? If it's today, I hope I hear a Cry out from heaven so loud it can water down a demon With the holy ghost 'til it drown in the blood of Jesus I wrote some raps that make sure that my lifeline Reeking the scent of a reaper, ensuring that my allegiance With the other side may come soon, and if I'm doomed May the womb help my mother be blessed for many moons I suffer a lot, and every day the glass mirror Get tougher to watch; I tie my stomach in knots And I'm not sure why I'm infatuated with death My imagination is surely an aggravation of threats That can come about, 'cause the tongue is mighty powerful And I can name a list of your favorites that probably vouch Maybe 'cause I'm a dreamer and sleep is the cousin of death Really stuck in the schema of wondering when I'mma rest And you're right, your brother was a brother to me And your sister's situation was the one that pulled me In a direction to speak of something that's realer than the TV screen By any means, wasn't trying to offend or come between Her personal life, I was like, "It need to be told" Cursing the life of twenty generations after her soul Exactly what'd happen if I ain't continued rappin' Or steady being distracted by money drugs and four- Fives, I count lives all on these songs Look at the weak and cry, pray one day, you'll be strong Fighting for your rights even when you're wrong And hope that at least one of you sing about me when I'm gone Am I worth it? Did I put enough work in?
Promise that you will sing about me Promise that you will sing about me I said when the lights shut off And it's my turn to settle down My main concern Promise that you will sing about me Promise that you will sing about me
(Promise that you'll sing about me forever Promise that you'll sing about me for-ooooh) Promise that you'll sing about me forever Promise that you'll sing about me for-ooooh Promise that you'll sing about me forever Promise that you'll sing about me for-ooooh
"Nigga, the homie's brother-- nigga, right here, he gone, my nigga, he gone!" "Nigga-- they just killed the homie's brother, my nigga. We right here on the block, my nigga." "Al- alright, nigga-- nigga just come-- alright, alright, just call me back, man, just call me back." (Hangs up) "Arghh... *fuck!* ...So what we gon' do, my niggas? What we gon' do?" "Bro, we can go back right now, my nigga. Like... nigga, I don't give a FUCK, my nigga. We can go back right now.*" "Fuck! I'm tired of this shit! I'm tired of fuckin' runnin', I'm tired of this shit! My brother, homie!"
Tired of running, tired of hunting My own kind but retiring nothing Tires are steady screeching, the driver is rubbing Hands on the wheel, who said we wasn't Dying of thirst, dying of thirst, dying of thirst
Dope on the corner, look at the coroner Daughter is dead, mother is mournin' her Strayed bullets, AK bullets Resuscitation was waiting patiently but they couldn't Bring her back, who got the footage? Channel 9, cameras is looking It's hard to channel your energy when you know you're crooked Banana clip, split his banana pudding I'm like Tre, that's Cuba Gooding I know I'm good at Dying of thirst, dying of thirst, dying of thirst
How many sins? I'm running out How many sins? I lost count Dreams of balling like Spalding But only shotty bounce The reaper calling, I'm cottonmouth Money is power (money is power) Yours is ours (yours is ours) Lay with a snitch, die with a coward Hope we get rich, hope we can tower Over the city with vanity with the music louder The same song, a black flower I'll show you how to dye your thirst, dye your thirst, dye your thirst
What are we doing? Who are we fooling? Hell is hot, fire is proven To burn for eternity, return of the student That never learned how to live righteous but how to shoot it Tired of running, choirs is hummin' Tell us to visit, we lying 'bout comin' Now back to business, loading the guns in Back of the Buick, your hood is feuding, and the beef is bubblin' It's no discussion Hereditary, all of my cousins Dying of thirst, dying of thirst, dying of thirst
Too many sins, I'm running out Somebody send me a well for the drought See, all I know, is taking notes On taking this life for granted, granted, if he provoke My best days, are stress days (Lord, forgive me for all my sins for I not know...) My best days, are stress days Say "Fuck the world, " my sex slave Money, pussy and greed; what's my next crave Whatever it is, know it's my next grave Tired of running, tired of running Tired of tumbling, tired of running Tired of tumbling Back once my momma say "See a pastor, give me a promise What if today was the rapture, and you completely tarnished The truth will set you free, so to me be completely honest You dying of thirst, you dying of thirst So hop in that water, and pray that it works"
Fuck! I'm tired of this shit! I'm tired of fuckin' runnin', I'm tired of this shit! That's my brother, homie! ("Young man, come talk to me! Is that what I think that is?) I know that's not what I think that is Why are you so angry? See you young men are dying of thirst Do you know what that means? That means you need water, holy water You need to be baptized, with the spirit of The Lord Do you want to receive God as your personal savior? Okay, repeat after me Lord God, I come to you a sinner (Lord God, I come to you a sinner) And I humbly repent for my sins" (And I humbly repent for my sins) I believe that Jesus is Lord (I believe that Jesus is Lord) I believe you raised him from the dead (I believe you raised him from the dead) I would ask that Jesus come into my life (I would ask that Jesus come in my life) And to be my Lord and Savior And to be my Lord and Savior) I receive Jesus to take control of my life" (I receive Jesus to take control of my life) And that I may live with him from this day forward (And that I may live with him from this day forward) Thank you Lord Jesus for saving me with your precious blood (Thank you Lord Jesus for saving me with your precious blood) In Jesus name, amen (In Jesus name, amen) Alright now, remember this day: the start of a new life Your REAL life.

2024.04.19 06:03 youknowherethecityis DEEP DIVE: What did Matty Healy actually do?

Hi guys! with TTPD coming out, I thought this would be an ideal time to do a deep dive about what Matty Healy actually did and what he didn't do.
This is not intended as an apology for his actions in any way WHATSOEVER (since he is human and obviously not perfect at all), but rather as an effort to address what was spread online during the maylotatty debacle by fauxmoi and other people on twitter. The purpose of this post is to provide context and factual information to counter some of the misinformation surrounding Matty and Taylor that keeps popping up and will be popping up after the album release. I believe that accusations without any basis are dangerous, and while personal opinions about someone's character and personality may differ, it does not justify character assassination. AGAIN, this is a DEEP DIVE which means it's gonna be long. So, if you don't feel like reading, no one is forcing you to, you can move along, But, if you want to learn more about Matty or why Taylor would want to date him or why so many artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Hayley Williams, Jack Antonoff, Stevie Nicks, Lorde, etc... have been friends with him and have admired him for years keep reading.
I'll go point by point i guess... also, idk if this is worth mentioning but im a jewish woc (my jewish family immigrated to latam after WW2)
(TRIGGER WARNING)
The ATVB show is a unique blend of concert and performance art, exploring thought-provoking themes like cultural overconsumption, social media, the tortured artist trope, and the crisis of toxic modern masculinity. This era pushed boundaries by blurring the lines between performance and reality.
The interlude in question, featuring Matty engaging in various provocative actions such as consuming raw steak, mimicking masturbation, crying, and performing topless push-ups in front of televised images of alt-right icons, can be seen as a commentary on modern toxic masculinity. Matty is not portraying himself during these moments but is instead assuming a character and engaging in deliberate acts as part of his performance.
By engaging in these exaggerated and controversial behaviors, he is highlighting the societal pressures and expectations placed upon men in today's world. The raw steak consumption symbolizes the primal nature associated with traditional notions of masculinity, while the mimicking of masturbation is a satirical take on the objectification and sexualization of men as well as male hyper-sexuality and porn addiction. The topless push-ups in front of the flashing images of influential figures like Andrew Tate and Ben Shapiro serve as a representation of the hypermasculine ideals perpetuated by the media.
Through this interlude, Matty is drawing attention to the performative nature of masculinity and the harmful consequences it can have on our society. During the show, he sheds lights on the pressures men face to conform to societal expectations, often at the expense of their mental and emotional well-being. The intention behind this is to spark conversation and encourage viewers to question the stereotypes and expectations placed upon modern men.
Matty's portrayal in this interlude is not a reflection of his true self or personal beliefs. He is using his platform as an artist to shed light on these issues and provoke thought and discussion.
  • "N*zi" salute
Earlier last year, a tweet gained a lot of attention claiming that Matty had done a n*zi salute. However, in reality, Matty was NOT doing a Nazi salute, he was doing a military salute which he had been doing at most shows since the song I'd Love it if We Made it came out in 2018 (as part of a choreography) right before the lyric "The war has been incited". He is NOT mocking Kanye, as some swifties and tabloids have claimed, Kanye only started saying antisemitic bs post-pandemic so WAYYY later than 2018. In fact, Matty has even called out Kanye, but I digress. What he did is completely different from this or this or this (n*zi salutes). Yet, people kept sharing this picture to make people believe he had actually done a military salute, one of many examples of how people have twisted things and lied because they didn't like Taylor or him as Taylor's new boyfriend.
This situation was broken down by a jewish TikTok creator as well, here's the video (it's a good watch and it goes more in depth)
  • Zionism
Despite the fact that these two terms couldn’t really be more opposite, Matty has somehow been accused of not only of being a Nazi but also a Zionist. Even though in 2022 he showed support for Palestine and disapproval of isnotreal, and has never exhibited any signs of Zionism throughout his career. In fact, for the past few months, during the theatrical section of their show where he plays current things he considers bad or nightmarish on the TVs, he included a news clip mentioning how Israeli forces are killing Palestinians. Consequently, rasing awareness of what's actually happening at every single show.
  • TAFS (more context)
In February 2023, Matty made an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show, a provocative and subversive "comedy show" (not saying I personally find it funny, but it is a comedy show) associated with the Dirtbag Left movement. The interviews conducted on the show are often satirical skits that mock bigotry and right-wing individuals. The content discussed on the show is predominantly fictional, exaggerated, or intended for shock value. The aim of such satire is to mock and critique societal issues through an unconventional and comedic lens.
  • Ice Spice
Following the release of the episode, Matty was accused of having mocked and been “vilely” racist towards Afro-Latina rapper Ice Spice. However, while Matty laughed during the exchange, it was comedian and co-host Nick Mullen who imitated a Chinese and Hawaiian accent. Furthermore, I should probably also note that Nick's imitation and comments weren't not directed at the artist, Ice Spice, as he was unaware of who she is. He was joking about a fictional “Inuit… chubby Chinese” Spice Girl named "Ice Spice". At the time, Ice Spice was still just rising in popularity, so when asked, Nick says that he has never heard of her and jokes about the name "Ice Spice".
Also, some people also claimed that he used a slur when in reality he didn't "Inuit" is not a slur, E****o is the slur.
video with transcript
Ice Spice's comments on the situation:
Ice, who has been a fan of the 1975 since she was a teenager — and still is — didn’t respond. “When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused. Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or some shit like that, and I’m like, ‘Huh? What does that even mean?’ First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? What? But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn’t really care. But that’s funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good.”
  • Ghetto Gaggers
Matty was also involved in a controversy that involved Ghetto Gaggers, a website known for featuring scenes where black women engage in oral sex and gag on the male genitalia of white men. This type of content was described as degrading abuse porn in the subreddit antipornvideos, which was later cited by fauxmoi, which was then cited by BuzzFeed.
However, it is also important to note that it was actually Adam Friedland who initially mentioned Ghetto Gaggers. Matty went along with the joke and contributed to it by saying, "Like you said, I think it literally was like Ghetto Gaggers was on the TV." Adam, in a subsequent episode clarified that he was actually joking and said, "I didn't even know if he was watching that porn" while making fun of Matty for getting cancelled because of something he made up.
video with transcript
Key remarks:
She went back in and Matty, like, on his phone and then on his 77-inch OLEDs just got Ghetto Gaggers blaring,' Friedland said....'I was, like, dressed as "guy who is jacking off," so I had, like, an untucked shirt. Like you said, I think it literally was, like, Ghetto Gaggers was on the TV.
While going along with the bit was still not a great choice and it's fair if people are still mad at him for not shutting it down, there's a big difference between actually watching that and going a long with a shitty joke on a comedy podcast.
More Context (can be skipped):
I guess I want to clarify that I don’t necessarily believe Adam Friedland watches Ghetto Gaggers, either. My understanding of Ghetto Gaggers is similar to his, I believe.
On Twitter, there is a prevalent joke or gimmick among popular male accounts (of course 🙄), often known for copying and pasting tweets or becoming the target of jokes from their own followers. When accounts gain viral tweets, it is common for someone to reply with an inappropriate video or picture, seeking a reaction from others. These videos are often extreme and fall into the realm of unethical pornography, deliberately posted to provoke a response.
In response to such replies, the OP hides the video from being directly seen in the replies. Another person, either the OP or a follower, then quote tweets the popular tweet with a message like DON’T CHECK HIDDEN/DON’T CLICK HIDDEN/DON’T LOOK AT HIDDEN,” usually making others want to view the hidden content. This is a specific aspect of Twitter culture that might not be familiar if you are not active on the platform.
Ghetto Gaggers is also popular in the meme world, which means that knowledge and references related to it can spread widely, even if individuals themselves do not personally engage with it. So, it is not surprising that a comedian that’s very aware and deep into internet culture is aware of the existence of Ghetto Gaggers. But idk much about Adam Friedland so... 🤷‍♀️
  • Islamophobia
Matty's criticisms of religion are not solely directed at Islam but extend to organized religions in general.
He holds an anti-organized religion stance, expressing concerns about the principles and practices associated with organized religions as a whole, which includes Islam. However, some people have labeled him as Islamophobic due to his retweets of posts from Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a prominent Somali activist who has renounced Islam and openly discusses her reasons for doing so. She made a short film) discussing her departure from Islam and shedding light on the oppression faced by women and young girls. As a result, both she and the director of the film received death threats. Tragically, her friend, the director, was later murdered by an Islamic terrorist.
He tweeted:
“I saw a film about Islam the other night, with people saying things like ‘I’m a Muslim and I’m white’ or ‘I’m a Muslim and I’m an American’ or ‘I’m a Muslim and I'm a patriot.’ You didn't see any ‘I’m a Muslim and I’m gay.’ Or ‘I used to be a Muslim and I'm fine”
Criticism ensued following these tweets and retweets, especially during a time when openly expressing any criticism of Islam was considered unacceptable.
Following Matty’s tweet that stated, "Isis are cutting little girls heads off and you want to challenge a non-religious, humanist perspective? I don't understand the world at all," a lot of twitter users started accusing him of Islamophobia and misinterpreting his words.
Matty's tweet does not suggest that all Muslims are part of ISIS or engaged in violent acts. Instead, his comment was expressing frustration with the atrocities committed by ISIS and questioning why there is resistance towards a non-religious and humanist perspective. His intention was not to generalize or promote harmful stereotypes about Islam or Muslims.
Moreover, it is worth noting these twitter individuals immediately assumed that Matty's use of the term "ISIS" implied that he was making a blanket statement about all Muslims being killers. This knee-jerk reaction raises the question of whether these people themselves harbor underlying Islamophobic sentiments, as they were quick to associate a specific extremist group with an entire religion.
Following that, he also made these tweets.
Matty also received a lot of backlash for his tweet about the Harry Styles fan account. However, the focus of his comment was not to dismiss the person's views solely because they were a fan of Harry Styles. Rather, Matty's remark stemmed from a combination of factors, including the individual's young age and their tendency to defend their own religious beliefs without considering broader perspectives due to bias.
A clip from a 2019 interview with Matty has also been circulating, where he states, "Nowadays, I honestly think if you're like piously religious, you should be ashamed of yourself." However, this clip has been taken out of context and used as evidence to label Matty as an Islamophobe. In reality, the interview (such a good and short watch, I really recommend watching it) was centered around discussing religion as a whole and Matty's personal struggles with it.
Matty often shared memes and other content on his Instagram series "The Problem Attic", most of it coming from his own fans through direct messages. In one instance, he posted a screenshot of a deleted tweet sent by a Muslim fan that contained an inappropriate joke about dating a Muslim girl. His intention was to make fun and blast the fact that the person who made the tweet had to delete it since it was obviously inappropriate and offensive, not to promote or endorse the joke. However, the context was misconstrued by some, since some swifties kept cropping the image, leading to accusations of Islamophobia.
In response to accusations of being Islamophobic and racist, Matty shared another screenshot on his stories. This time, it was a tweet claiming that being a fan of Matty and The 1975 automatically makes one Islamophobic and racist. Matty captioned the story with "islams 💕," not to mock Muslim people, but to highlight the absurdity of these allegations. He playfully referenced the incorrect term "islams" to highlight the ignorance behind that statement, since the tweet's incorrect usage of the term "islams" instead of "Muslims" further emphasizes the lack of credibility in the accusations.
  • Homophobia
In August 2019, Matty Healy kissed a fan during their performance of the LGBTQ anthem song "Loving Someone" in Dubai. However, this incident has been met with allegations of homophobia, with critics arguing that it was careless and selfish of him to kiss a fan in Dubai. Reflecting on this moment, he explained:
During ‘Loving Someone’, the stage background transforms into the gay pride flag, which the frontman said prompted security guards in Dubai to try and “pull [the band] off stage”. Instead, Healy went down to the crowd and went to hug a male fan who was holding up a sign that read: “Marry me.” “He said, ‘Can I have a kiss?’ and I was like, ‘Why not?’” Healy explained to The Sunday Times. He claimed the authorities wanted to arrest him, which he managed to avoid, but reading the reaction on Twitter made him consider “going down to the police station and hand[ing] myself in”. “When I got to Japan I was reading about it and I felt pretty irresponsible and then a bit, well, ‘Fuck that’,” he said.“Of course I’m not going to put people in danger, but I genuinely want to be an ally for people who don’t have a voice if I happen to have this big voice in pop culture. Those are the fundamental things I stand for.”Healy spoke to NME on the day of the Dubai concert, saying before the show that he would “go to jail for what I stand for”. “I would never come over here and be disrespectful to people to make a point,” he said. “But I’m never going to not stand up for women. I’m not going to not stand up for gay people. I’m not going to not stand up for minorities.”
All this happened after Matty gave a heartfelt speech condemning Dubai’s anti-lgbtq laws. He is, to this day, banned from the country.
Then last year, despite knowing the risks involved, Matty used his platform again to advocate for human rights and shed light on the discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Malaysia. The act of publicly kissing Ross MacDonald, The 1975’s bassist, (instead of kissing a fan like he did in Dubai so he wouldn't put any citizens at risk) in protest was a symbol of solidarity and defiance against oppressive laws. In a country where any display of same-sex affection can lead to imprisonment, Matty's determination to stand up for what he believes in is commandable.
However, this resulted with The 1975 being banned from Malaysia and their show abruptly cut short and despite Matty’s brave stance in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and challenging discriminatory laws, the aftermath of the protest showed double standards and brought a lot of backlash that defied logic. In a time where activism is often encouraged, especially from those with platforms and privilege (like rich white cis men), the response to Matty's actions was unexpectedly negative.
A lot of people on social media immediately started attacking Matty and The 1975 for their protest. Surprisingly, some accused them of imposing Western ideals on Malaysian culture and labeled Matty a "colonizer" for advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. These people seemed to forget that the essence of the protest was rooted in a universal human truth – the right to love and express one's identity freely.
The purpose of the protest was to challenge oppressive laws, not to impose foreign values. Queerness is not exclusive to the Western world; it is a universal aspect of human experience that deserves acknowledgment and protection, regardless of geographic location.
Some also said that Matty should respect Malaysian culture, ignoring the fact that homophobia is not a cultural attribute but a violation of basic human rights. The narrative shifted from addressing the issue of discrimination to attacking Matty.
Moreover, as news of the festival cancellation spread, blame was misdirected toward Matty, despite the fact that the responsibility lays with the government. The frustration and disappointment of the local audience was understandable (for multiple factors like having paid for a ticket, patriotism, homophobia, and Stockholm syndrome for lack of a better word), but channeling that anger toward the artists rather than the authorities revealed a misplaced focus.
It seems like people in this day and age seem to forget that meaningful change often comes with disruption, and that those who speak out against injustice should be supported rather than vilified.
People dismissing Matty’s protest as performative or driven solely by a desire for popularity ignore the fact that what he did in Malaysia resulted in him spending a few hours in jail, and the government subsequently filing a lawsuit against The 1975 (they settled, so the band literally had to pay for this act of "performative activism").
Not to get into hypotheticals, but if someone like Harry had engaged in a similar protest, the likelihood of widespread support and praise would have been high.
Additionally, members of The 1975, such as Polly who is openly lesbian, demonstrate how the issue directly affected the band. The protest wasn't just an abstract statement for them; it was a message challenging the notion that it’s okay that her existence is basically against the law.
Furthermore, unfounded speculations arose suggesting that Matty's activism might have negative consequences for Malaysia's political landscape. Some claimed that his actions could lead to the victory of a conservative candidate in the election or result in more restrictive LGBTQ+ laws. However, as events unfolded, these predictions proved to be inaccurate. The conservative candidate did not win, and there was no evident escalation of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation beyond the existing oppressive laws.
Matty's protest, rather than causing harm, sparked conversations about LGBTQ+ rights in Malaysia and the need for societal change.

  • Rina Sawayama
Matty faced public call-outs from Rina Sawayama, a fellow artist signed to the Dirty Hit label, on two separate occasions.
They were last seen together at the Brit Awards shortly after the initial backlash due to the podcast controversy.
However, the first incident occurred way later, after he got massively canceled, during a performance at Glastonbury, where Rina said, “I wrote this next song because I was sick and tired of these microaggressions. So tonight, this goes out to a white man that watches Ghetto Gaggers and mocks Asian people on a podcast… He also owns my masters. I’ve had enough!” She said as Blind by Korn was playing.
If you've made it this far into the deep dive you'd know by now that what she's saying is not exactly true... but I digress.
Dirty Hit, originally founded as a label for The 1975, expanded its roster to include other artists, with Rina being one of their notable signings. During her speech at Glastonbury, Rina claimed that Matty Healy owned her masters, which gained considerable attention given the ongoing discussions surrounding artist control over their master recordings, as exemplified by Taylor Swift's public battle after her music was "stolen". However, it is important to clarify that Matty does not own Rina's masters. He simply holds a 4.09% share in Dirty Hit, which led to a lot of confusion regarding why Rina would make that accusation.
Second speech
The second incident, which is speculated to also be about Matty, took place during a performance in Lisbon in July 2023, where Rina said, “So I’ve been thinking a lot about apologies. Isn’t it funny how some people get away with not apologizing ever? For saying some racist shit, for saying some sexist shit? So let’s try this: Why don’t you apologize for once in your life without making it about your fucking self?” as ‘Blind’ by Korn started playing again.
  • Matty's apologies and attempts to take responsibility
- Five min long apology: During a live show in New Zealand back in April 2023, Matty took a moment to apologize for his past actions and comments, addressing the controversy surrounding his involvement in TAFS. He discussed the concept of his show, which delved into the complexities of fame, masculinity, and sincerity. He admitted that sometimes he took his jokes too far, and in doing so, might have been irresponsible in front of a large audience. He acknowledged that it made him feel embarrassed and apologetic for any unintended offense caused by his remarks. He expressed remorse for any hurt feelings and clarified that he never intended to be mean-spirited or hurt anyone with his humor. His speech was clearly unscripted, and he used a lot of filler words like “and,” "like," “a bit,” ”kind of,” "kinda," ”a little,” and "you know," which is not uncommon for him, especially when he's nervous or speaking candidly. Despite his efforts to express remorse and take accountability for any harm caused, some people have unfairly focused on a 45-second clip taken out of context from his almost five-minute-long apology.
- Finsbury apology: During The 1975's biggest show at Finsbury Park, with a sold-out crowd of 50,000 people, Matty addressed the evolution of their live performances. He acknowledged the influence of TikTok and the impact of virality, explaining that the show had to adapt and evolve to maintain its authenticity and surprise. Matty touched upon his personal journey, referencing his time spent alone, exploring various ideas and themes that shaped the show. He expressed his excitement and gratitude for the massive crowd before him, emphasizing his dedication to making people laugh and feel good through his art. He also admitted that there were jokes and statements he made in the past that he would take back if given the chance, demonstrating his willingness to learn and grow.

I only discussed his most popular accusations since I couldn't really get into every single accusation made during that time period. But, if you're still curious or want to read more about another one of his controversies or learn about some of his activism, this slideshow pretty much breaks down all of that. (I know people don't like slideshows and prefer getting their information from twitter threads but that doc has links to every single source as well as full videos, articles, etc... which can't be done on twitter so yeah... sorry)
Again, I don't think he is perfect. In my opinion, even though he did not do the things people on twittetiktok claimed he did, he did put himself in that position by going to a podcast where those types of jokes are made which is unfortunate. But, at the same time, I do think there's a huge a difference between the two and considering all of the activism he has made throughout the years I think he deserved at least the benefit of the doubt. The 1975 is a political band and Matty is an outspoken person which means sometimes he gets it right and sometimes he gets it wrong.
lmk if you're interested in me discussing anything else or doing a post fully breaking down every controversy, their relationship, or any Taylor situation for that matter (I like deep dives :) ). Hope this is at least a bit insightful.
I apologize for any layout or grammar mistakes, I have finals coming up, but I'll try to answer any questions you may have about the situation.

I live in California and I was living in a small home in oildale (it is an extremely ghetto place) we lived next to tweakers that were having a meth lab so every kind of sketchy person would come to that house next door all hours of the day, day or night. They fought with us alot and nearly tried to beat my husband for asking them to move their car.
Basically you can see why we wanted to leave, not only that we found black mold growing on the baseboards of our home due to severely neglected plumbing issues. We found a new home and left. We didn't give a 30 day notice because it took months to find a home, but we offered to pay the next month anyway just because it has been becoming an emergency to leave due to the violent neighbors and me having asthma and breathing in mold with a toddler.
We cleaned out the property, paid for $400 floor cleaning, took photos and repaired everything we could, and lawnmowed the front and backyard, and turned the keys in. The property management did not inspect the home for over a week and when they walked in they said the kitchen facet, garbage disposal, stove knobs, bathroom sink vanity and sink were missing and there was "no sign of break in". Clearly the property management thinks we are at fault and we emailed them photos and everything. I mean it is not like it is obviously where we live? It is like a mini skid row.
What do we do? Are we going to have to fight in court over the security deposit? We paid our rent EARLY every month, never missed a payment and invested alot into getting our security deposit back. We always were on top of maintenance and everything, we tried to be the best tenats. Obviously someone did break in and lock picked and just locked it back. You're not going to throw a giant sink over the window 🤦‍♀️. This is a $1750 security deposit.
Unsure what to really do. We are on month to month lease. We had 2 previous 1 year leases with them. We did not renew 3rd year so they were very aware we were leaving.

2024.04.01 04:45 ArthurRimjob Adam and Nick have a cameo during the current 1975 tour.

Kinda weird I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere yet. I guess no one here is either gay and/or pussywhipped enough to have encountered this.
Oddly enough, I came to know that my GF was a huge fan of the band during the TAFS debacle. She was genuinely stunned by the outrage ("he likes ghetto gaggers? Well GOOD FOR HIM, THAT'S A COMPLETELY NORMAL THING TO ENJOY"). Quite honestly, I'd never heard this band until very recently: once she enlightened me that the muzak played while we were buying socks or something in H&M was them. It seemed like music crafted particularly for that kind of setting.
Still, once I noticed that they'd be doing our country, I bought the tickets, eager to both get her a nice, random present and to makeup for all the metal and noise gigs she had endured by my side.
The show itself was quite peculiar. It's quite odd seeing teenage girls lusting over a dude on the verge of middle age. Frankly, the same thing happened once the Matty guy entered the stage. Looking back, I'm quite puzzled by all the Matty-Ratty bashing: the dude seemed quite handsome to me; even though he kinda looked like the Tytus de Zoo character from the communist-era Polish comic book.
Not a single song stayed in my head after the set, and the stage setting was a Talking Heads knock-off. At the same time, the music was quite inoffensive. I've noticed that I've become much less cynical than I used to be, as I find it fun to hang around people who relish in any kind of elation that fiercely.
Moving to the event in question: at one point the Matty guy had his Nebraska-esque moment on stage. He did a solo acoustic song next to a prop TV playing a montage of some deadly serious kaleidoscopic bites. It was a loop of news fragments, some drastic warfare footage and, well, a few second cut of a sketch featuring Nick and Adam in black turtlenecks. My GF, of course, recognized them too, instantly giving me a stink eye once she'd noticed my amusement. Understandingly so: she's had her share of anguish while I was blasting Holywood pedophilia compilations during workouts.
Still, If you happen to have an early Zoomer GF who went to middle school around a decade ago, during the height of the Tumblr era, she'll likely appreciate being dragged to this charming dork's show. I can't help but have a soft spot for people generating that sort of organic enthusiasm.

Ice Spice Is Every Black Woman Who Has Had To Work With A White Woman With A Sus Partner

TURNING DOWN WORK IS A PRIVILEGE.
BY KEYAIRA BOONE · UPDATED MAY 26, 2023
Ice Spice hopping on Taylor Swift’s new track has not had the hoped-for cleansing effect on the Pop/Country megastar’s “Karma.”
The Bronx drill rapper brought her ginger curls and signature enthusiasm to the hit track with a remix released on May 26. But instead of gaining the desired clout from the feature, Swift was accused of trying to deflate criticism about her problematic new beau by working with Gen-Z’s Princess of Rap.
Swift has reportedly been dating Matty Healy, singer-songwriter and lead singer of British Pop/Rock band The 1975. Their connection has brought internet scrutiny raining on him, and it has been widely reported that he previously made questionable comments about Black women, including a few directly aimed at Ice Spice.
On May 15, Swifties were horrified to hear Healy jovially discussing pleasuring himself to “Ghetto Gaggers,” a hardcore pornography site that specifically highlights the sexual brutalization of Black women, in a recently resurfaced audio clip from The Adam Friedland Show podcast released in February of this year.
On the same program, Healy also encouraged racially charged comments targeted at Ice Spice, specifically. Despite the Hip-Hop debutante having gone on record with Elle in January saying that she’s a big fan of alternative music and “obsessed” with The 1975, the band’s frontman egged on mocking of her phenotypical features and weight by the show’s hosts.
When Healy mentioned that he had actually DMed the rapper on social media, Friedland and his podcast co-host Nick Mullen began derogatorily speculating on her cultural identity and ethnicity, calling her everything from an “Inuit Spice Girl” to a “chubby Chinese lady,” all while mocking various AAPI accents and requesting that he DM her once again to ask “‘What are you? A f*cking Eskimo or something?” All of this was met with verbal agreement and eager laughter from Healy.
Healy later gave a half-hearted apology of sorts while performing with his band in New Zealand in late April. “Ice Spice, I’m sorry,” he said on stage, according to Rolling Stone. “It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.”
Ice Spice releasing a song with Swift amidst this information swirling makes her the same as every other working Black woman seeking professional advancement in uncomfortable circumstances.
Working with Taylor Swift is a huge opportunity for any up-and-coming artist.
Had Ice Spice not taken that opportunity, Swift would have been just fine but the rapper’s career may have suffered. So the rapper took the chance to introduce herself to a new audience – something demanded by the attention economy.
Few Black women have the luxury to extract themselves completely from coworkers who turn a blind eye to the racism of their loved ones.
Everybody who has ever had a job knows that just because Margaret from HR laughs with you about your coworker in accounting on your lunch break, doesn’t mean she believes Black lives matter.
That is part of why Black women are reluctant to build personal relationships with coworkers. We know every professional acquaintance is only one company happy hour or potluck away from a casual n-word drop or a hair touch request.
Cashiers, bank tellers, and retail associates have to work with people whose politics they are unsure of. That is life when you have to work for a living. There is no guarantee that everyone you collect a check with is going to consider others’ disregard for your humanity as a dating deal breaker.
Entertainers are not excluded from this—especially Black women, who are impacted hardest by the pay gap.
Every day Black people show up to work at companies that are turning their back on their 2020 commitments. They know their coworkers have racist mothers, fathers, uncles, friends, and partners. They also know that their rent is due on the first.
This is not the first time a pop culture icon has been accused of using Ice Spice for clout. When the rapper was invited to spend time with Kim Kardashian and her eldest daughter North West, some voices in the comment section questioned their interest in the rising star due to the many cultural appropriation accusations levied at the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Others suggested that she was picking up the game and felt vindicated when it was revealed that she was in a Skims campaign.
No matter what her motivation, being seen with them publicly is part of her job – turning clicks, swipes, and streams into dollars and coins.
The journey from sharing a chopped cheese to climbing the steps of a Met Gala is not an uncomplicated one, and sometimes it means working in tandem with the same kind of controversial people you’re dodging in your Slack chat.

2024.02.10 05:51 FederalNectarine3889 The Criticism of Taylor Swift: A Masterpost

The Criticism of Taylor Swift: A Masterpost
I think a large number of swifties lately have been saying “it feels like 2016 again” in regards to Taylor’s recent string of controversies and the criticism following those controversies. It may feel like lately Taylor has been “dog-piled” or a victim of unnecessary disparagement.
I am going to explain a different perspective from the usual rabid defense of Taylor. Instead, I want to discuss her reproval from the perspective of someone who has followed Taylor practically through her entire career, and still sees this criticism as valid. I want to explain why some people feel it is necessary to call Taylor out and explain the semantics of some of the things she has been called out for in depth. This post will be long and thorough (probably parasocial), but I hope for those who don’t understand WHY she is being criticized so much lately, I hope it will shed some light.
I want to start with saying, I do not hate Taylor. I actually looked up to Taylor and really loved Taylor at one point. I was exposed to Taylor Swift as a child when my eldest sister received her debut CD for Christmas. Taylor’s music has been prevalent for my entire life basically. There are moments in my life where Taylor’s music was the soundtrack. I wouldn’t ever say I was a totally involved fan or “swiftie,” as I didn’t consume myself into the “lore” or fanbase of Taylor until folklore. I want to reiterate before I go into further detail, I do not hate Taylor Swift and speaking of her in a critical format should not mean I hate her.

Jet Usage:
In the year of 2023, Taylor has released over 8,250 tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted from her private jet. As of December 21, 2023 Taylor took a total of 170 private flights. You can read more in depth about what that means here. Compared to other transportation modes, private jet emits 2 metric tons per hour per person. A U.S. domestic commercial flight releases just 0.04 metric tons of CO2.
https://preview.redd.it/f8eesbvypohc1.jpg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a9a6b06a866016922bc5c3fe6cb8a27ed3a2c01
Presidents and politicians get death threats daily, and we have seen pictures of them flying commercial (albeit with secret service or serious security personnel). Taylor can afford to do this, she is a billionaire. Most people when speaking about the private jet emissions, are not saying Taylor cannot fly private. They are saying she should take serious effort to reduce these emissions, and she is unequivocally not doing so. She is taking frivolous 15-30 minute flights to avoid an hour or two car ride. Even flying her plane back and forth from airports EMPTY to come pick her, her friends, or her family back up. There is also an option to just, not go (unless it’s business or contractual obligations). She doesn’t HAVE to fly from Kansas City to NYC in one night because she’s done with her plans in one city.

Merch/ Business Practices:
Taylor does not use sustainable or ethical business practices to produce and promote her merchandise. It’s not like she doesn’t know about better options existing either. During the Lover era in 2019, she partnered with Stella McCartney, a known advocate for sustainable fashion. Taylo Universal Music Group produces low quality merch that is pretty infamous for having issues. When The Eras Tour first started there was tiktok after tiktok warning consumers to stay away from her merch, due to its poor quality. Her website had to even release a statement about the level of fading and distressing her merch was sustaining after washing. These products end up in landfills as they are defective or poor quality and cannot be reused, resold, or recycled. Taylor also participates and engages in serious overconsumption culture. Producing various versions of the exact same vinyls or CDs, just different colorings to encourage people to buy more than one despite it being the same product is an example of this. The midnights vinyl clock is another example. The exact same products, yet marketed to be worth buying extra for their collector value/exclusivity.

Political Activism:
Now onto the issue of Taylor’s political activism, or lack thereof. People wouldn’t expect this of Taylor if she didn’t put herself in that position by creating an entire documentary about “coming out” as a democrat/ political activist. Taylor demonstrated her activism as a personal journey that she was now obligated to fill. To quote Taylor in Miss Americana, (which this title in itself has political significance), "I want to do this. I need to be on the right side of history!"

https://preview.redd.it/bmf8tmm6sohc1.jpg?width=498&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f092e5d81ac6d27c7ca26657e110e981be694c9a
During the Lover era, Taylor participated in a heavy amount of activism and allyship for the LGBTQ+ community. For example, she advocated for her followers and fans to "Support the Equality Act," a federal anti-LGBTQ discrimination bill. She even started her own petition with over 300,000 signers and a letter-writing hashtag campaign called #LetterToMySenator.
In late September 2023, less than 6 months ago, Taylor again used her audience for political activism. She posted a short message on Instagram encouraging her followers to register to vote. Vote.org recorded over 35,000 new registrations after her post. The most since 2020, and a 23% jump over last year. The number of 18-year-olds registered was more than double of 2022. It’s pretty obvious that when Taylor wants to, she can truly make a difference.
Now as a genocide is happening, which is having global implications/effects, there is radio silence. It is not abnormal for people to be confused or annoyed that suddenly this obligation to be moral or on "the right side of history" has been abandoned.

White Feminism Accusations:
For those who don’t know, white feminism is used to describe a form of feminism that only focuses on white women and ignores the oppression of women of color and women lacking other privileges. It essentially excludes the majority of women who need feminism the most. Taylor has been accused of only caring about feminist causes when it benefits or applies to her. An example of this would be positioning herself continuously as a feminist, and even appearing on the cover of TIME magazine for the #MeToo movement, but working or appearing with known abusers. Taylor herself knows exactly what it is like to be a victim of sexual violence. Taylor sued and won against a former radio host, named David Mueller, who had groped and assaulted her during a photo-op.
https://preview.redd.it/9xmecokctohc1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cad8aefc4f7cc65315a5b0af5eeaa0557b946dec
When she reflected on this trial win she said, “I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this." That is why it is especially concerning when she engages in these behaviors.
In 2022, Taylor worked with director David O. Russell, who has been accused of sexual misconduct and abuse, from his own niece and others. She appeared in his film Amsterdam.
In 2023 and 2024 so far, Taylor has appeared multiple times with another known abuser, Jackson Mahomes. Jackson has been charged with three counts of aggravated sexual battery, and one count of battery following an alleged incident that was caught on camera.

https://preview.redd.it/ez7cziqvtohc1.jpg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edbc837933217a076b4f093b4f868cacd0c736cc
Taylor has also associated herself with Matty Healy, the lead singer of the British pop–rock band The 1975. On an episode of The Adam Friedland Show, Healy made a disturbing statement about how he masturbates to porn of black women being humiliated, brutalized, and racially and sexually degraded. He also made comments about watching “Ghetto Gaggers,” a violent porn website that dehumanizes black women. In this same podcast episode, the hosts made misogynistic and racist comments about Ice Spice, a friend and collaborator to Taylor. All while Matty laughed and called her dumb. It is speculation whether they had a romantic relationship or not, but she appeared in public outings with him as well as holding hands and kissing with him shortly after this.
As a sexual assault victim myself, it is extremely disappointing to see Taylor so openly engage with these abusers. She even has said herself, “I just want to say that I'm sorry to everyone who wasn't believed because I don't know what turn my life would have taken if people didn't believe in me when I said that something had happened to me.” She understands the importance of believing in women and advocating for us, but still chooses to work and align herself with these people.

Lastly, I want to add that criticism is not synonymous to hatred or disdain for Taylor. I will always acknowledge that through Taylor’s career she has been the brunt of horrific sexism and misogyny. It is NOT okay to weaponize this history of unfair criticism to shield Taylor from perfectly valid criticism. You can enjoy Taylor as an artist or Taylor as a person and engage in critical discussion of her behavior and history. That doesn’t make you a bad fan or a hater. If you think that, you may want to look inward as to why you view criticism as synonymous for hatred.

Cut wires taking out a wall…
I took out a wall leading to my staircase and ended up cutting some wires that lead to a bathroom vanity light and outlet. As you can see I have it extremely ghetto rigged at the moment. I’m trying to avoid junction boxes.
Would my best bet be open up the wall more and run a new wire from my vanity into the outlet? Or is there a splice now days that can eliminate junction boxes?
Ended up splicing the 14/3 switch wires where a soffit light was leaded down the staircase. Any recommendations on avoiding a junction box there also?

2023.12.01 15:16 badfantasyrx Affectus

Decadence has a price. Plunge from the top and know the strife that your plenty has wrought. Your vanities exposing weaknesses, now, your affectations amusements for the hardened poor.

Affectus:

Origin & history I

From afficiō ("affect") + -tus (action noun-forming suffix).

Noun

affectus (genitive affectūs) (masc.)
  1. affection, mood, emotion, feeling
  2. affection, fondness, compassion, sympathy, love

Done in the more modern 3D pixel style, the cyberpunk RPG boots you into a world where you've taken the path of Icarus, and now wander the bottom of your own megalopolis in search of the only way your people have to feel - the drug Affectus. Amnesia leaves little to go on, and you immediately seek shelter and work to buy time and unveil your past. There must be a way back to the top. Find a cure for your addictions, uncover the requisite conspiracies.
Beat the hungry jaws of the ghettos you helped create. In this narrative-focused experience, choices matter:Discuss through branching dialogues. Sneak, fight or hack. Acquire new skills with body implants. Manage emotional states. Explore diverse districts of the multi-layered city of Tribus.
Affectus’ unique style combines 3D low poly sci-fi environments and animations with a traditional 2D sidescrolling viewpoint. Ironically, after your mysterious fall from grace, you find that Karma matters. Sneaking past guards or killing them, how you treat the NPC city dwellers, they change your colors and impact your story, including the conclusion.
That doesn't stop you from cyberjacking in more implants and buffing your skills to pull off missions for your nominally benevolent new boss. Hacking, sneaking and - if necessary - blasting your way to goal is accompanied by a unique ambient soundtrack, and makes for an enjoyable gaming experience.
The dark alley that was your story's inception does not necessarily dictate your outcome, it's up to you to navigate the 'real world' (inspired by Blade Runner and The 5th Element) and defeat the virus that has deprived humanity of true emotion.

2023.07.21 00:10 araybian Demi has the worst PR team

Demi Lovato like, seriously, has the worst PR team of the young pop girlies (and beyond), I swear. Lemme present my evidence.
In the past year:
1.) Selena Gomez dissed the person who literally saved her life by giving her one of her kidneys!* And then instead of graciously walking it back, she double-downed! And THEN her PR team swerved to change the narrative by bringing up some old radio interview of her dad's talking about WHAT A GREAT FRIEND! Selena is because she gave up the part of Mitchie in Camp Rock because she thought it would help Demi.
* If I seem overly harsh about this, it is personal to me. I do love Selena's music, but this is a very sore subject. My sister was on the kidney donor list for two years. Thank God, she finally got a kidney a month ago and it has been life-changing for her. So, yeah.
This led to a chorus of comments on the interwebz (and when I say chorus, I mean like hundreds combined all over every article, every video, every reddit thread, every single media soundbite about this particular tidbit from Selena's team) going on about how Demi was gonna react. Oh, Demi is soooo OTT, Demi is soooo extra! Demi is gonna explode. Just wait for Demi's response! Which, I'm guessing is exactly what Selena's team was waiting for because once Demi responded in the expected "Demi fashion," all the media would talk about was Demi's reaction. Which would then lead to more hate directed at Demi about how she's so OTT, so extra, so this, so that, and Selena was "just trying to help her, she's so sweet and wonderful, and Demi's the worst!"
Of course, that didn't happen. Demi didn't respond at all. She completely ignored what Selena's team put out and that whole 'Selena passed on the Mitchie role because she's SUCH a good friend' withered and died in the media. But, you know what else withered and died in the media? The fact that Selena essentially dissed her friend who gave her a life-saving kidney!
You know what didn't happen? Any acknowledgement in any way shape or form that Demi had grown, her sobriety has clearly affected how she handles things with grace, and is not down to get into any messy situations.
2.) Taylor Swift broke up with her boyfriend of six years, Joe Alwyn. No harsh words were exchanged, but she quickly rebounded with known piece of shit, Matt Healy. Healy, is a piece of shit in this way: He throws up Nazi salutes in his concerts. He makes out with fans, some of them clearly underage, at his concerts. He insulted Ice Spice for her weight and that she was Asian, either directly or laughing along with the jokes.
He has insulted Taylor herself in the past. He is great friends with a couple of podcasters who make horrible jokes about Taylor and her mother (who fought cancer!). Oh, yeah, and he talked openly about jerking off to a porn site called "Ghetto Gaggers." This site sexually and roughly humilates black women, and often does so to financially desperate black women some of whom don't even realize what they are signing up for, and if they try and back out once they do realize what is going to happen to them they are threatened with a lawsuit.
All of this happened WELL BEFORE Taylor began dating this shitstain of a human being. This all became very, very public AFTER Taylor began dating this shitstain of a human being. There were articles, media pieces, thinkpieces, huge-ass fan campaign letters written to her, about her. She kept dating him. And then released a quickly put together "Karma (Featuring Ice Spice)" song/video in an attempt to white-wash her boyfriend. Didn't work. Just put everything the shitstain did/said even more in the spotlight. She stayed with him for a few more weeks before alas their love affair ended. And why did it end? The distance because of his touring, and her touring was too much. But nothing else was the reason. All of the horrific, horrible things the man said and did wasn't the reason she broke up with him. Nope!
So what did Taylor Swift's PR team do to keep Matt Healy's name away from her? To keep the media and her fans from talking about it? Oh, just drop a new song that made it seem like (Oops!) Joe Alwyn cheated on her! Oh no!! And then drop another song with a video! And then announce her next rerecorded album. And then a video for that. And what do you know? Suddenly, it's Matt Healy who?! "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" comes out and Taylor once again can do no wrong.
Meanwhile, Demi released her best reviewed album in her entire career. Went on tour with an all-female rock band. Released critically-praised rock versions of some of her pop hits. And.... {crickets} In her few press appearances, comments generally talked about 'oh God, there's Demi, she's so extra! Ugh, why won't she go away! Doesn't she have an alien to sing to? Doesn't she have a fro-yo shop to terrorize?'
Articles popping up left and right that misrepresented just about everything she said. "Demi changed her pronoun from "they" to "she," trend-chaser! So, most people think she was just following trends, they have no idea she goes by she/they. Why, because her team didn't have those articles taken down quick as could be. Nope, they just let them stay up so that misinformation stays out there. Demi said it was exhausting having to explain "they" with a nuanced explanation, but the clickbait headlines just included the exhausted headline. Did her team take care of that? Nope, not at all.
Naming that critically-praised album "Holy Fuck" caused it to not be sold out front in Walmart, Target, etc. which is physical sales sure, but think of how many people walking around see new CDs on shelfs and think: 'Oh, I'll check that out on Spotify, I-Tunes, amazon.' Without even having that album featured, HF didn't even have that opportunity because her team was like 'sure, go with that title!'
I could go on, but it's pretty clear. All the pop girls, pop stars, celebs in general do shitty things, have crappy moments, and it's their PR teams job to clean up their reputations, smooth things over. The fro-yo incident was TWO YEARS ago and yet Demi Lovato is still getting dragged for it. Her PR team has done absolutely nothing to clean up her reputation. They are doing absolutely nothing to highlight who she is now. Her management team, her record label, are doing nothing for her at all. No one is perfect. Demi certainly isn't, but she has a team--and is paying them--to sell Demi to the public and they aren't doing it. The teams of Selena and Taylor and Arianna and Justin Beiber and Harry Styles, etc. etc. etc. are. But not Demi's.
And it's really frustrating as a Lovatic. I'm pleased to see the others I like doing well. Seeing their teams do well for them. I just would like to see my absolute fave have her team do well for her.

2023.06.26 20:41 germgrrl Ghetto Gaggers has been making headlines for months, it’s time to get it shut down

Since Matty made his appearance on The Adam Friedland show in November, people have not stopped talking about the abusive porn website Ghetto Gaggers.
People have kept airing their grievances about this site, spreading and platforming it’s name making it easier for disgusting people to find it and support it, yet nobody has offered any solution to getting it off the internet.
Why is the hate train focused on people rather than the site that is causing the harm?
Why has there been no mention in any publication of a way to take action against the people that run it?
People should put their money where their mouth is and change that.
To start, here is a 2 year old petition that calls for the shut down of Ghetto Gaggers.
Spread it.
To be clear, my intention with this post was not to villainize anyone in this sub, nor to make myself look self righteous. I did not even know about this petition until recently, and I’m aware that a petition will not do much, but it’s something to get the ball rolling. I’m just surprised that we’ve been talking about this for so long and nobody has brought up a solution yet.
I’m simply tired of seeing people crucify Matty for making a joke about this, yet doing nothing to actually take the site down. If you don’t see anything wrong with GG or Mattys comments, that’s cool. If you are using this situation to continuously condemn Matty, maybe look into what you can do to take down the website as well.
To those continuing to bring the conversation back to Matty and his morality: you are proving my point. We’ve talked about him for months, why don’t we start talking about how and why a website like this is allowed to exist?
