Yet another review! I'm almost done with my collection, just 2 or 3 more and I'm done. When I'm finished, you'll have a very comprehensive guide of Mexican boot/shoemakers in my profile.
Why Mexican shoes? Because I live in Mexico, and they are more affordable and easy to find than other options. Besides, I get to support local business, and that is a big plus for me. Obviously, English is not my first language, so bear with me.

John Doe Shoes is a Mexican boot/shoe manufacturer with a peculiar business model. You get to choose the leather first, then the boot or shoe style. When I was starting to get into boots I was really confused by their website, so I'll do my best to break it down for you guys:

These are shoes that in stock. You can buy those at a lower price, and you don't have to wait for them to make your boots. The downside is there's not really a lot of options, but it's worth it. I actually bought this boots from the sample sale. Pretty forward buying process. Prices are in USD, and they ship outside of Mexico.

Here you start choosing the leather. The pictures are just examples but when you click on "Brown SB Foot Tanning Co" you get to choose the exact model and sole you want. You can see their different models in the style guide. They have 2 lasts: milo last (like mine) and their normal last (more rounded in the front). If you see few photos of their work, you'll recognize them easily.

The boots:

Russet Horsehide leather is not usually found in boots. It's no the fancy leather from a horse butt. It is more of a heavy-duty leather: thick, stiff and more visible grain. I think this particular leather is from Horween Tannery. I bought it in natural color, and it is veg tan, so it should develop a nice patina. These are my first natural veg tan leather boots.

I paid $190 USD for them. Their normal price would be $292 but I got them from the sample sale.
About sizing, I'm a 9D brannock and I ordered that size. Another redditor recommended sizing down half a size for their Milo last, I kind of agree. I like my boots on the tighter side, so 8.5 would have been ideal. Anyway, I'll just add a leather insert or wear thicker socks.
I've got nothing bad to say about the build quality. I'm very pleased with what I got. I thought they would be stiffer at first, but after the ones from Urban Wolf Club, everything else seems lightweight.

Could be better:

• When I bought from the sample sale, I thought the one in the photo was literally the one I'm getting, but that's not the case. The one in the photo had their normal last, and I got the milo last. They should add what kind of last it has. I'm happy with my purchase, but still not ideal.
• There is no leather midsole. I have to be honest, up until this boots I had never questioned the existence of a midsole since all of my other boots had one. I honestly thought that was the standard. I'm very used to having leather midsoles, so I'll ask for one next time. I recommend you do the same.
• Communication is not ideal. I actually got the boots before the shipping status updated on my order. Shipping was fast, but I live in Mexico so that's expected.

Would I buy from them again:

Yep, that 3x2 sale seems like a really good deal. Besides, if I want a pair of longwings made with tan horsehide chromexcel, John Doe Shoes is THE PLACE to go. Just look at these beauties: Tan Horsehide CX Connor Longwings. There are some mixed reviews on this sub, but my experience has been mostly positive. I'm sure I'll order again someday.

Chaves 229 Liberation Blackout - This was a Thanh V Nguyen exclusive. I'm the first owner. Has seen a bit of pocket time, but never cut anything. I disassembled to install skiff bearings. Easily one of the smoothest knives I have, feels like it runs on glass. Never sharpened. Comes with box, skull clip, Thanh's card, and original bearings. SV: 350

Pro-Tech TR-3 Magnacut - First owner. Only carried a couple times, managed to put a faint snail down the side of the clip-side scale. Never cut anything. Never sharpened, but came with a slightly uneven cutting bevel from the factory. Comes with box and pouch. SV: 250

I dropped out of college to play poker for a living and did that successfully for 7 years. Odd jobs/service industry for 6 years. Delivery drivepromoted to Sr Manager of a contracted home delivery operation for a major corporation for past 6 years to present.

Really I think a lot of the pressure I’m feeling is around wanting to give my lady the chance to be a full-time mom (and/or part-time worker) should she choose it. And to afford certain lifestyle upgrades and simply have some more peace of mind.
I feel qualified, and confident I could do any number of things well. But, I’m hesitant to “just pick something” because of my stage of life 36 yo and we want to start a family soon, fiancé is 33. Going back to school, even a project manager cert is daunting in terms of initial investment.
My dream would be to find a great job with a great company, wouldn’t care much what I’m doing if it’s stimulating enough and I’m learning and checks the boxes above. Since I don’t have the tech or specific background, it seems like I’d have to backstep salary-wise before I can go forward.
Sales stands out, but seems tough to crack into the tier I’d want to be at without grinding out cold calls first, plus the volatility of working commissions.

I’ve just learned the term, which definitely matches this behaviour somewhat, but not entirely. For me, instead of these false promises (sometimes not promises, but offers/suggestions) happening in front of other people, they are in private. So it isn’t for applause from anybody else, it’s literally just between us.
And mostly, instead of it being something that gets deferred over and over or denied (though that absolutely occurs too), if I stupidly let myself believe it this time (always after questioning it openly and asking for more concrete details and being assured that it’s feasible and affordable and they want to do it!) and actually go along with it a little and start doing my research and picking out whatever it is I’ve been promised… it gets thrown back in my face if I DARE bring this up. Because I am so spoilt and ungrateful and entitled to think that they could just pay for x/buy me y, and am I stupid because I just think money grows on trees? And I will get screamed at for this. Bearing in mind that always I also have been nagged about picking out said thing for days/weeks/months and bullied into going along with it.
It’s always something offered to me, not something I actually ask for or expect, and literally it ranges from very small amounts of money (like ten quid) to a lot more than that. And I do not understand it. It’s a mindfuck, because sometimes these things do have followthrough, so I can’t actually bank on it being a load of horseshit! It is impossible to tell what is a trap and what isn’t—except a good 50% of the time, even if they actually come through for me, they make it VERY CLEAR what a burden I am to them and how this is all my fault.
It just hurts, even after all this time. There are things that were total lies that were promised to me that actually, genuinely could have helped me so much and helped me get out of here and made myself less of a burden. The things that were followed through on, don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful, but they didn’t make an actual difference in my life.
The other day another false promise was made in a throwaway comment and it broke my heart because I knew it was a lie by how dismissive they suddenly became when I said I had been looking at the same thing. It could have changed all our lives for the better. But nope, not allowed.
And today, again, I was asked if I wanted to do something and they would pay, and was told to go get it sorted right away. I said I would at some point soon then. And immediately, literally without even me doing anything to make it a reality, they started on the guilt trip and telling me that I’m costing them so much money because of this and it’s so difficult and unfair. So I was like, oh, okay, that’s fine then, I don’t need to do it. And they got so angry at me for that too! And started hounding me and demanding to know why I didn’t want to anymore. I said that I needed to wait until I was feeling better anyway, so I can’t book it anyway, so it doesn’t matter if it’s not feasible. Which isn’t even a lie. And they seemed to accept this but then a few seconds later just started hounding me again and got violently angry when I wouldn’t engage and just said “no thanks, it’s fine,” to the bombardment, and started angrily banging shit around and crumpling up stuff in my face and being generally threatening. And they got mad that I disengaged entirely and left, so they had to stomp up behind me a few minutes later to crash and bang in the rooms adjacent.
Like. What do they achieve by this, because it can’t be just about ego and public recognition if it’s entirely private. And is it strictly ‘future faking’ if it’s a setup to make me feel like the most evil, entitled POS on earth?

Tuesday, May 21 Good morning! Today's Morning Brief is all about strategists revising their 2024 year-end predictions. Nasdaq record highs: The Nasdaq rose 0.65% to a record close as the S&P 500 gained 0.1% Monday. The week's optimism came on the back of a few revised S&P 500 year-end calls (see both today's Takeaway and the Chart of the Day!). ‌
JPMorgan's succession story: JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon noted that his retirement was both closer than "five years away," his standard stock answer over the years, and that a succession plan was "well on the way." Talk of the CEO's departure moved the stock down 4.5%, despite the bank's good news: It revised its 2024 revenue expectations higher due to two potential rate cuts. The cuts would increase its net interest margin, a key banking metric marking the difference between what banks pay for deposits and what they make from them. ‌ Microsoft's new vision for AI: Microsoft announced its "Copilot+ PCs" on Monday, giving the world a look at how the most valuable company in the world plans to integrate its AI capabilities into consumer computers — capabilities that it hopes will reignite the PC market. Using specialized chips on the devices (no need for cloud processing), the ChatGPT-4o-based system assists users by seeing and analyzing what's already on the screen, integrating a key communication step. The software will be on Surface tablets as well as PCs from the usual suspects: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. The stock rose 1.2% Monday. ‌ 'A good position to hold steady': Monday's round of Fedspeak had Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson and Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr concurring with a suite of their peers who have reiterated their wait-and-see approach to rates. One month of encouraging data isn't enough for them, and as Fed Chair Jerome Powell said last week, three months might be better. ‌

Today's Takeaway is by Myles Udland, Head of News. ‌ One of the most notable bears on Wall Street finally flipped this week. Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson raised his price target for the S&P 500 over the next 12 months to 5,400 from 4,500, a 20% jump amid a market Wilson sees defined by "higher than normal uncertainty." Josh Schafer has more on Wilson's call here. ‌ And in his report, Wilson included a chart that serves as a note of caution to stock market bulls looking for lower rates to power the next leg of this rally. ‌ "[There] is a wide array of return outcomes across history following the start of the cutting cycle," Wilson wrote. ‌ "In many ways, this analysis encapsulates our outlook well — a balanced risk/reward profile in the average/base line view, but the potential for a wide array of scenarios to play out. Once again, get ready for some notable swings in sentiment, positioning and prices."
Interest rate cuts have a complicated history with the stock market The S&P 500's average annual return is around 10%, making the 12-month returns that follow rate cuts, on average, well below this bogey. And with the exceptions of 1974, 1989, and 2019, year-ahead returns for the S&P 500 after rate cuts have typically been well outside this historical average both high and low. ‌ All else equal, lower interest rates benefit riskier assets like stocks, bringing down the return hurdle that makes stocks preferable to something like fixed income. ‌ What Wilson's data reminds us, however, is that rate cuts aren't something the Federal Reserve typically does "just because." ‌ Even the winning years in Wilson's chart are reminders of precarious moments in financial market history — the 1994 bond market crash gave rise to James Carville's famous complaints about "bond vigilantes," and 1998's emerging market crisis and collapse of LTCM forced the Fed to take drastic action to save a single hedge fund. ‌
Go back 18 months and Wall Street expected a recession to prompt rate cuts. Today, the Fed is looking for "greater confidence that inflation is moving down sustainably toward 2%" as the catalyst to lower rates. ‌ Last year's view on rate cuts was in line with history: A negative shock prompts the Fed to move. The current view is anomalous. ‌ Though as Wilson notes, in the current market, what else would you expect? ‌ "The last couple of months have been a microcosm in this respect as economic growth data have once again cooled after a period of strength, while inflation data have been bumpy," Wilson wrote. ‌ "In short, macro outcomes have become increasingly hard to predict as data have become more volatile. We see this environment persisting." The Wall Street consensus for the S&P 500 has been shifting, with three strategists boosting their outlook for the benchmark index. Let's round up the latest changes. ‌ ‌ ‌
Chart of the day BMO Capital Market's chief investment strategist Brian Belski boosted his year-end target to 5,600 from 5,100, noting that momentum in the market is "likely to persist." On Friday, Deutsche Bank chief equity strategist Binky Chadha boosted his year-end target for the benchmark to 5,500 from 5,100, noting robust earnings growth and an improving macroeconomic consensus. Then, on Sunday, one of the biggest bears on Wall Street over the past year joined the crowd. Morgan Stanley chief investment officer Mike Wilson now sees the S&P 500 hitting 5,400 in the next 12 months, up from his prior call that the index would fall to 4,500, driven by solid earnings growth.
As Myles writes in the Takeaway, there are notes of caution in Wilson's "bullish" call. Macro consensus has become "increasingly hard to predict" in the current environment, with the market shifting back and forth between a "soft landing" and "no landing" base case. Investors, he wrote, should be "ready for more rotations." ‌ But as our chart of the day shows, with Wilson no longer calling for a market decline, few on Wall Street see any further "rotations" sending stocks sinking to end the year. ‌ And to JPMorgan ... we are waiting patiently. ‌ — Josh Schafer, Markets Reporter

Hello everyone!
I saw that some bull and bear ETF pairs like QQQ and PSQ have borrowing costs below the risk free rate. Does this mean it is possible to short both at the same time and with daily rebalancing then just generate a risk free profit on the cash proceeds from the short sale?
Or even more extrem. Short PSQ and simultaneously short Nasdaq Futures instead of QQQ to get even more leverage. Quickly estimating in my head, the returns on the collateral in this scenario could easily be about 20% or more p.A. with barely any drawdowns.
For what (practical) reasons this doesn't work? Or would it actually?

Just recently got into biking, I’m not going to be anything crazy, mostly just trails, no 10+ jumps or anything of that nature. My budget is about 400-500 USD. Looking to buy used. If you had my budget, which bike would you look for? Thanks in advance. My current bike is very cheap, a huffy that I gave 20 bucks for at a yard sale, it’s nice but heavy, and the bearings seem to be slow. The full details are over on the ILW mini site, but the short of the long is: If you are wanting to try out the game, always do that first, before paying. It also shows the game at its roughest (because of the influx of new people), so if you can deal with how the game runs then, you'll be ok when it runs better. Invictus Launch Week is a now two week long celebration of all the military focused ships in the game (nominally at least), and not only will get have an Avenger Titan (the wonderful space penguin) to fly around with for the duration of the event, but you can get a free short-term rental of a whole pile of ships, by going to the Bevic Convention Center in Area 18 on the planet of ArcCorp in game and pick from any of the ships that are on the daily list, which then will become just as though it was your own ship, for 48 hours. If you need guidance, just ask in global chat in game, someone should be able to help you out (though remember, many will be new, just like yourself, be patient and don't be that gamer). A fun little detail is, too, that if you attend the convention in-game at least three different days (that is, as the game counts it - they roll over 1600 UTC, so keep that in mind), you will get both a badge over on Spectrum (CIG's bespoke communications platform, with both forums and chat), and a Medivac Beacon, which is a hand gadget that you can use for, well, making yourself known as either in need of or being a supplier of medical assistance when out and about.
What Do?
If you do decide to pledge now, however: As a new player, you will likely want to hop on and actually do the tutorial that has (finally) been added. It's a fairly short one, but it'll get you familiar with the basics of the game (on-foot navigation, interaction, flight controls, that sort of stuff), and you even get a set of armour and a bit of cash at the end of it. In short, simple, but worth your time. You can also use the Guide system, which you can find over on Spectrum once you've signed up: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/guide - sometimes there's little bonuses for doing that as well, but it's always useful, as it's a real person, who plays the game, who is there to help you work out how to do things in the game.
For the moment, the servers seem to be pretty happy, but as the game is still in development, there's going to be bugs, sometimes light, sometimes extreme. So while the general gameplay is decently smooth, of course the old "it's an alpha" always applies, and you should always treat this game as one to make sure your expectations are at the correct level for jankiness. That said, you just might be able to have some outright gameplay type fun out in the big sandbox that is out little star system of Stanton.
In addition to Invictus Launch Week itself (and DefenseCon, the Drake "we are not down with the UEE" counterpart to ILW - lore stuff ;) ), the game is also currently playing host to a huge new chain of missions, which can arguably be done solo (according to some), but which are outright amazing with other people. What Game Package To Get
Most importantly, when picking what to get: Anything called a "starter pack" will get you in the game, and spending more doesn't equal a better ship. Specifically, don't get something called a Standalone Ship, as that will not include game access. It says as much on the store, but there is a lot of text, so it bears pointing out here.
Right now, one of the two largest sales of the year is going on, which means there is a sale on two specific starter packs as well, and either of the two will do you very well as a starter: The Aurora MR Invictus Starter Pack is 10% off the usual price, and the Avenger Titan Invictus Starter Pack is a full 25% off, which lands it as an absolutely amazing value for the cash. Both of these come with a nifty paint as well, as well as a bit of extra starting cash, and longer insurance than the default (though do note, insurance currently doesn't matter, that's going to be more a thing later on, though CIG's word on the topic is also that you'd never completely lose anything you spent cash money on).

If you want the cheapest option to get the game, forever, the Aurora pack should be your pick. Back in October of 2023 my mom was served a foreclosure notice because she didn’t pay the HOA. For context she is 54 (and a former Realtor) and I am 22. She immediately listed the house for sale but both buyers she had pulled out of the deal last minute. She decided for some reason to take the property off the market. Since then she has been in and out of jobs, having left for arguably dumb reasons (poor management, people raising their voice at her, etc). Of course she should be respected but in her position she didn’t really have the luxury to quit and be without work. Because I didn’t know when she was going to get evicted I moved out with my dog into my own apartment. I tried to tell her over and over that she needs to get rid of furniture and make the house look presentable. But she feels the need to hold onto everything because they’re family heirlooms. As a result she remains sitting in the house with it not being sold.
She has been working at a restaurant now that is close by (her car got repossessed). She barely makes enough for the cheapest rental in our area so obviously she has not been paying her mortgage or the HOA since she was served that notice. When I try to tell her she needs to be planning how she’s going to move out she claims that they “improperly served” her because her address is confidential but I explain that it doesn’t matter if she’s not paying to live there.
Anyways, this week she called to tell me someone changed the locks. When she called the sheriff they said that they had documents to evict her but she received something in the mail saying that said the auction sale didn’t go through. We called a locksmith and had the locks changed back but I reminded her that this is just a warning of what’s to come and she needs to have a plan of where she’s going to go. Of course she won’t have any money until the property gets sold either by her or on a foreclosure auction.
As I stated I am only 22. I live in a very small studio apartment and she is mentally unstable. I would be willing to let her stay with me for a few weeks until she finds a place but I worry that since she has no vehicle she would struggle to find a place to work. (My apartment is too far from her current job to bike to). I of course don’t want to tell her sorry go be homeless but at a certain point this can’t be my burden to bear. I gave her all of the possible advice months in advance but she chose not to listen. I love her and want to to what I can to help but there’s only so much I can do when I’m barely supporting myself and my dog.
I want to also mention that she has smoked weed and cigarettes for as long as I’ve been alive and her consumption has not stopped since all of these financial troubles despite me telling her it’s not helping her case. She claims she needs them to not lose her mind or for her “pain.”
I know this story is long and all over the place but if you stuck through to the end I would really appreciate some advice. Any advice from a realtoattorney would especially be appreciated.

Look I knew well in advance that Ubi would choose Yasuke as part of this story. It was obvious as we have been in the "woke era" of entertainment development for the past 7 years. So, you could pretty much predict EVERYTHING coming out now.
But here is the deal with this:

1. Yasuke, in his own memoire fully talks about the fact that he was ALLOWED to train with Samurai by order of the Shogun. This was to have "mock duels" in the court where they would stage fights for amusement during parties and gatherings or to show him off. He was actually referred to in multiple references as a "trophy" of the court. He WAS NEVER AN ACTUAL SAMURAI and did not protect as an official nor as a Samurai did, and he did not fight in any wars.

Which brings us to the next point:

1. With his obvious necessity of being a part of the Shoguns court, there was plenty of story arc and opportunity to keep the virtue signalling agenda, and have the character be a part of the story in a major way, while simultaneously making a back handed statement about raacial inequality. WHICH IS GOING to be at least 50 percent of the point of this character being in the game. You can tell just by the manner in which they presented him, and his counterpart.

Which brings us to the next point here:

1. Unlike with AC Origins, this character is, as far as I can tell, going to have a SERIOUSLY hard time being a spy, and running schemes of intrigue since HE IS LITERALLY THE ONLY DARK GUY IN THE NATION! I mean, when he leaves the room, PEOPLE NOTICE, and when he walks in- THEY DEFINITELY NOTICE!

Lastly, I just wanted to say this. This kind of method of story writing and development just for the sake of making a point, needs to stop. Its gotten tiresome and isnt driving sales, just ridiculous arguments.
Yasuke is at best a supporting character to this time period and this story in reality, and he should not be a player character. Japanese players and people, and their forefathers who WERE SAMURAI and lived that code FOR REAL, should be honored by this title in that way, and not shoved to the side as "the male patriarchy whos out to get the black guy and the female". Which according to some sources I HAVE in the gaming world, is EXACTLY how you have portrayed the NPC samurai who patrol the streets.
The fact is that there are HUNDREDS of years of REAL history and historical figures to draw from, under which there were REAL life heroes and real life Samurai who participated in some REAL LIFE EVENTS that Should have been in this story and deserved to be played by the player if you were going to go this route.

Japan has a long, hard, war hardened, and religious conflict oriented story of JAPANESE people of mostly Shinto and Buddhist background, who fought and co-existed in a special way and in a largely ideologically bound way. You don't insult anyone but yourself- Ubisoft- by trying to virtue signal so hard for females and blacks in this game.
You dont piss me off, but if I was Japanese, and I had waited such a long time to see a Japanese setting for AC... Id give you the middle finger and walk.
Origins had a place for the black Assassin. You could do another AC about the RICHEST EMPIRE EVER TO GRACE EARTH: The kingdom of Mansa Musa. And you wouldn't starve Japanese people of an AC title.
You gave CHINESE PEOPLE CHINESE characters in their AC...
I'm sure Ill get some hate for this, but the argument is solid.
Yasuke in REAL LIFE didn't earn Samurai armor nor a sword bearing his soul. He says in his own writings and by historians that he was not Samurai and that he was only allowed to roam the outside world under watchful eye.
And the female shinobi, while stereotypical for pop culture, was still quite rare, as women walking around at night alone was not typical, and men could get in and out of crowded places, bars, and other areas more easily. Ninja werent dressed up in black and sneaking around most the time, they BLENDED. Which is why this whole thing stinks of virtue signalling... none of this story makes sense from even an assassins persepective.
Do better Ubisoft. Between this, and the female Varangian guard in For Honor... you guys are starting to become kind of preachy and boring.

Chapter 6
Location: Hust Forge. Hust Henarald's conference room
POV: Kellaras
After making Kellaras wait some days, Hust Henarald finally grants him an audience and says "One day, I will be a child again". These words seem to be nonsense to Kellaras. While waiting for his audience he noticed the Hust Forge never stops working. Henarald goes on to say we all war with two parts of ourselves and both make weapons from anything at hand. Henarald asks Kellaras if Anomander simply wants a sword or to join the Hust Legion. He doesn't think Urusander's Legion would like that very much. Kellaras says he knows the request of a sword is unusual at this time. Henarald responds by saying others will see it as political. Perhaps even a secret allegiance. Kellaras is put off balance by Henarald's pragmatic responses and then shifting into ending each with "One day I will be a child again." Henarald asks for specs and Kellaras says Anomander wants the sword to be silent. Henarald responds by asking if he would prefer a gagged weapon and if Anomander will hide it's origin. Kellaras tells Henarald that Anomander wants his swords spine to be quenched in the purity of Darkness itself. Henarald muses on power and says those with the most power have the greatest fear and that means power is meaningless and delusional. Kellaras counters that the Forulkan would have enslaved the Tiste with their power had they won, but they lost to the power of the Tiste. Henarald responds, "A triumph in solitude makes a hollow sound, and to every glory proclaimed the heavens make no answer".
Kellaras reiterates that his master requests a sword. Henarald responds "To take the blood of Darkness". Kellaras is surprised by this as Mother Dark is not Azathanai. Henarald asks how she feeds her power and if now that Anomander knows the secret of House Hust if he will use it for political gain. Kellaras says his Lord is the ultimate secret keeper. Henarald agrees to forge Anomander's sword, but requires that he be present at the quenching of it by darkness to witness if it is blood Mother Dark uses. Kellaras tells him he won't be able to see anything and leaves the chamber trembling mostly upset by Henarald's repeated assertions that he will return to childhood.
Kellaras goes to the main hall where there is feast taking place. He pushes aside his doubts and is proud that he got Henarald's agreement to make the sword. He searches out Galar Baras and finds him leaning against a pillar staring at a woman that had just entered. Kellaras sees her see Galar Baras and watches her stiffen. The woman is Toras Redone. Kellaras notes that even grimed from hard travel she is beautiful and makes his way to Galar. Galar asks if Henarald spoke to Kellaras of childhood. Kellaras says yes, but does not understand. Kellaras invites Galar to join a table and Galar accepts though he tells him he can't drink. Galar tells the captain that the childhood thing troubles them all. Kellaras asks him to call him by his name and not rank. Galar says that Henarald claims that he is losing his recent memories, but no one can see any evidence of this. Galar tells Kellaras of a sickness called Loss of Iron that afflicts smiths. Kellaras tells Galar that in his meeting Henarald was sharp and focused. No evidence of a crumbling mind. Galar asks if he will tell Anomander of this. Galar says it has no bearing on the creation of the sword and says his master would likely just say returning to childhood isn't a bad idea.
POV: Galar Baras
Kellaras gets drunk and stumbles off and now Galar has to be alone with his thoughts and heartache at the presence of Toras Redone. She was still holding court at one of the tables and after a while she shuffles over to him. She comments on her husband transferring as far away as he could. She tells Galar that he is a pariah in the citadel. That people think him arrogant and dismissive. She knows that's not him, so is puzzled. She says he should have sex with the priestesses. That celibacy is not for soldiers. He should feed his appetites. Galar responds by asking if she is well fed. The barb slides off of her and she says well enough. She says she is certain that her husband stays true to her and that leads her to infidelity. Galar does not understand this. She changes the subject and says she has missed him. She tells him to go to bed, but he knows he won't be alone for long. He compares himself to Toras Redone's husband, Calat Hustain, knowing that both spend their nights alone, "because it was in their nature to choose it: to remain alone in the absence of love"
Location: Neret Sorr
POV: Kadaspala
With Osserc and Hunn Raal gone, Kadaspala is having a more enjoyable time having dinners with Urusander. The painting however was still irritating to him. He doubts anyone will see below the surface of his painting. He is finished and will leave in the morning. "There is but one god, and its name is beauty. There is but one kind of worship, and that is love. There is for us but one world, and we have scarred it beyond recognition". Kadaspala now truly sees Urusander and is terrified. Urusander asks him why he chose to accept this request. Kadaspala says he's denied hundreds, but if anyone can prevent a civil war, it's the man in the portrait. Although his thoughts imply that that may not be the same man standing before him.
Location: House Enes lands
POV: Cryl Durav
On his short self-imposed exile from the wedding preparations, Kryl finds the antlers of a long dead Eckalla. A symbol of triumph. Cryl thinks the triumph is hollow. Hunting for food was once a necessity, but that necessity bred traditions that resulted in the extinction of this animal. Thinking back on his youth he dreamt of discovering a new world free of Tiste where he could become prey and know the thrill of fear. Enesdia was also present in these fantasies. He thinks, "He had been trained for war just as he had been taught how to hunt and how to slay, and these were deemed necessary skills in preparation for adulthood. How sad was that?".
His horse notices some movement and he sees a troop of Tiste riders approaching. This makes no sense as there is no reason for them to come here on there way to somewhere else. Cryl rides to meet them and sees that they lead a score of Jheleck children. There were no chains. The captain of the company asks why Cryl is out this far and Cryl tells him who he is. The captain breaks in and says Cryl is probably fleeing the frenzy of the coming marriage. The captain introduces himself as Scara Bandaris and says there are two reasons for him being here, one trying to figure out what to do with the Jheleck hostages and two to attend the wedding. Cryl agrees to escort them all to house Enes. Scara perceptively guesses that Cryl is out here because he is in love with Enesdia. He says he will say no more on the subject.
There are 25 Jheleck children. Scara says they will raise wolves in these children. Cryl says he's heard they are more like hounds. Scara says hostage taking may come back to bite them. Scara laughs at his own joke and forces a smile onto Cryl's face. Cryl feels a little better.
Location: House Enes
POV: Enesdia
Enesdia is upset that Cryl has been gone for a few days. She searches out her father and overdramatically asks him why they are shirking their responsibility to their hostage. She says, "For all you know he could be lying at the bottom of a well, legs shattered and dying of thirst" Jaen responds "Dying of thirst in a well?" he tells her he sent him on a search for Eckalla. She says that's a hopeless quest. Jaen says Cryl's familiar with those. Enesdia asks what he means. Jaen responds that his time with House Enes is ending. It has only now struck Enesdia that her companion will not be at her side much longer. Enesdia laments the fact that Cryl's family has only one occupation. He will be a soldier like his only living brother, Spinnock. She muses that she could ask Andarist to offer Cryl a commission in the citadel, far away from fighting. Cryl would never know, but he would be safe.
Location: House Drukorlas
POV: Orfantal
Orfantal is standing near the estate road with Wreneck, a stable boy that used to be his friend. They are also standing near an old nag horse. They have been standing for some time. They are being circled by 3 feral dogs that have smelled the food that Orfantal carries. Orfantal wished he knew why Wreneck stopped being his friend, but it seemed impossible to ask now. Orfantal has all of his possessions in a trunk. They are not much. Orfantal thinks he could fit in there too, ready to be discarded. Wreneck is 10, Orfantal is 5. His grandmother is sending him off somewhere to learn how to grow up. He knows there will be a time when unhappiness comes into his life as it does with every boy. A wagon pulls up. It will be his ride to wherever he is going. Wreneck makes sure they know that he is going to the citadel and that he is nobleborn. Wreneck tells Orfantal that the old horse is blind in her left eye, so don't let anything ride on that side of her. Orfantal says goodbye to Wreneck and Wreneck waves dismissively and leaves.
POV: Wreneck
Wreneck turns from some distance to watch them leave with tears running down his face. He resolves himself to return to the "evil hag" and now he doesn't even have Orfantal to make his life easier. Nerys Drukorlat had forbidden him from playing or even speaking to Orfantal. She would fire him if he did. His mother and father and sisters relied on his income. He wished he could have played with Orfantal this entire morning and hugged him goodbye, but he was afraid of the evil hag.
Location: Toras Keep. On the road to the Citadel
POV: Orfantal
The party makes camp and the scarred old man who loaded Orfantal's trunk says that this is likely his horse's last journey. Orfantal is sad to not even know the horses name and wonders what things she has seen in her life. He decided that she had been a warhorse and saved her rider many times, but not from the betrayal that finally killed him. The leader of the troop introduces himself to Orfantal as Haral and tells him not to call him sir. He tells him he guards merchants and that's all. Orfantal asks about bandits. Haral says there are some Deniers. Haral tells Orfantal that he will be sharing Gripp's tent. The man who took care of his horse. He says that Gripp can be trusted and not some of the other men in the party.
Haral says after this he will be joining House Dracon's houseblades. Orfantal asks if he was a soldier once. Haral says few weren't in his generation. Orfantal introduces himself. Haral asks why she named him that. His name is a Yedan dialect. The holy language of the monks, Shake. Narad, one of the guards, says it means unwanted and laughs. Haral tells him to keep his mouth shut on this journey and tells Orfantal his name doesn't mean unwanted, it means unexpected. Narad laughs again and Haral savagely kicks him in the face then punches him. He then walks away from the unconscious guard. Orfantal is trembling and his heart is beating fast. Gripp comes over and calms him down. He says it's discipline and Narad was pushing for weeks. Orfantal now has a face to put to all the faceless betrayers in his war games. Narad. Gripp shows Orfantal how to raise a tent.
Location: Within sight of Dracon's Hold
POV: Ivis
Ivis and Sandalath are riding towards the hold. Ivis tells her that Draconus will be gone for several weeks still. Her body tells him that she probably had a child, but that's none of his business. She is now a hostage at House Dracon's and she will be treated well. Sandalath asks where Draconus comes from. Ivis says even his servants do not know, but he proved his worth in the war. Ivis is upset at the discipline now presented by his houseblades and resolves to fix it. Sandalath is being led to a warm bath and thanks Ivis. He responds, "My pleasure, milady". Hilith the head of the house maids does not like him calling her a lady as she is only hostage now. She lets him know it. Ivis says, "Old woman, you are no queen to so command me. I will choose the honorific our guest deserves. She rode well and without complaint. If you have complaint, await the pleasure of our lord upon his return. In the meantime, spit out that sour grape you so love to suck on, and be dutiful." Hilith says this isn't over. Ivis responds with a command to leave his courtyard and if he hears of her being miserable to the hostage that it will in fact not be over.
Location: Dracon's Hold
POV: Sandalath
Hilith tells Sandalath to come with her to the bath. Sandalath asks if the water is hot. and asks her if there is wood ready just in case. Sandalath challenges Hilith and says she is to treat her as if she was the lady of the house. Hilith bristles but agrees. Sandalath remembers her first stint as a hostage and the horrible hag that made her life miserable until Andarist found out and got rid of her. If Hilith turns out to be the same, she will tell Draconus. A younger maid escorts her to the correct bath, not the one Hilith had prepared for her. Sandalath says if Hilith is her enemy, then Sandalath should have many allies. The maid smiles and says thousands. Sandalath asks the maid about Ivis and if she finds him handsome. She says he is old, but Sandalath doesn't think so. Sandalath tells the maid she feels welcomed by this house and feels born anew.
