Hi I wasn't quite sure who to speak to about this so I decided to use a burner account.
So I 18F have known this guy, 18M (let's call him Connor) since we were kids. Like we have known each other since birth. Now Connor and I live about an hour away from each other and our families used to meet up a bit when we were younger. However, about 5 years ago or so our mums fell out and so we didn't see each other for 5 years. Yet a few months ago, my grandma died and as Connor's mum and my grandma were quite close. We actualy ended up meeting up because we went to visit my grandpa on the same day thatConnor went to the same area to see a play (of a GCSE text that he studies). When our families met up I was actualy taken by surprise, I remembered Connor a bit form when I was younger but of course he was all grown up now and so different than my memory. Not that I'd admit it in my teenage embarrassment but I found Connor really quite cute and after dinner, we went on a small walk round the village to just talk because we were around the same age and our parents went off to get ice cream. We talked about our schools (him going to an all boys school and ke just a public one) and how different they were. I really enjoyed talking to Connor and so when he asked if I had snapchat I of course said yes. Before this I didn't use it like at all. I didn't have any snapstreaks and only had it installed. But after this we kept on talking every day and it was really quite nice to have a friends a friends I spoke to every day.
However at some point my friend, Braleigh (17F but 18 in 2 days) found out about Connors existence because I think my friends spoke about him because ethey kept on teasing him about me (they asked what I did at the weekend and when I said I met a family friend they all made innuendos). Now Braleigh and I hadn't been friends very long but she enjoyed teasing me about Connor but after begging for weeks, I finally showed a photo of him to her and her friends (My first mistake). She said he was ugly and I couldn't really defend him because at this point I hadn't even accepted the crush myself. So time progressed and at some point around Christmas, Connor asked me to give her snaochat to me because he enjoyed teasing her when on my phone. I didn't want to but he said something like "come on don't be boring" and I stupidly accepted.
Now one thing you need to know about Braleigh is she is very good at trying to message guys. No offence to her but she isn't the most attractive but she gives attention to many guys (even in lower years) and is very well experienced. Up until this point she had been in a relationship for about a month with her first boyfriend (now ex) in the year above.
Now I wa strally worried when driving home and when he began to give slower response times than usual I began to get really worried that he was messaging her back and not me (ehich he's fine to fo its his life) but I was in denial about my feelings at this point. Now my family ended up visiting his a few weeks later just after Christmas and ge said he blocked her and we even got into an argument about him not long before. She aid I was acting "stroppy" and ignoring her (she was talking about a time I felt really sick and wanst speaking to anyone just sat with my head in my hands). She said "fine I'll block him" and I thought that was that. She playfully joked about sharing his snapchat to the people in my school because they were all interested about this "Mystery Connor, [my] boyfriend." No matter how often I told them we weren't dating, they didn't drop it (mainly because I'm not really attractive and am not really expected to find love)
Time skip to a few weeks ago. Braleigh and I fell out because some of her friends were gossiping about her behind her back. One of her friends said that it was awkward in lesson when I gave her ex-boyfriemd (This is Braighleigh's second and they had been going out for a month and a half give or take). I said yeah but wanted wanted to drop it because she'd already said the same thing in the lesson and I didn't think it wa say of our business. Now some people started calling her a slag and I think unintentionally U said something that supported that (which I would never want it to be my intention) but two days later she ended up sending me loads of accusatory texts. Now I said to her that I didn't say anything like that and it's mone of my business about her relationships. But a day later she said "why did you lie" and I just didn't want want get involved and said well I'm confused now but I'm sorry. I don't think it's best if we hang out for a bit etc. (Which is fine because she isn't even in my main group of friends she was just a good friend I had outside of that). She said good and a thought that was it. However, the next day at school, she started standing really close to me and my friends where we were stood, talking (like half a meter, it was concerning) and I could see her constantly turning to look at me in teh corner of my eye. I just ignored ignored because I'm sure it would blow over. Yet next week, a friend if mine said oh at Braighlrigh was gossiping about you behind your back. And I said well that's annoying yet she's being hippocritcial is that's what she claimed I did but oh well, it didn't affect me directly, she can do what she wants. I continued to ignore her because eif she wanted to talk then she can approach me but U have other, better friends so uts fine. I haven't spoken about her once (not yo her friends or anyone else) and it really was a thing of out of sight, out of mind situation.
Cut to today where Connor snaps me saying, somethings happening. I said in what way? He said Braghleigh added me... I said OK... and he said that she told him all of what happened and he wasn't picking sides yet. Which kind of annoyed me because me falling out with Braigheigh has nothing to do with him and now she's dragging in out. So I told him, you're great but it has nothing to to with you. And he agreed. But I can't say that I went into a shop with my family and just started stressing (to the point where tears started started fall unwillingly). And I began to feel sick. This only happened once before when Braighleigh said Connor looked fit in a photo and whilst I felt sick for the rest of the day I also pushed it to the back of my mind because she was in a relationship.
Now I know that I can't control either of their actions, they're both poeple in their own right because U really know what I want to do. I want to move on from this guy that I'm left crying over but can't seem to do it. Like I don't know what to do and haven't even been in a situation where I've liked a guy like this or this much. It genuinely make some feel ill and don't know what to do. Could someone give advice. Please and thank you :)

I just blocked the scammer on ig and wa. He was sending out threats and i already gave them 500 dollar. Just hoping for the best. Wish me luck. I don't care anymore if he leaks me, i changed my username and everything so good luck finding me

I texted her on ig to reschedule the date and eventually we went on it. She was staying at a nice hotel 10 min away from me. I met her outside and when she came out i was like dam. Everything started going smoothly almost instantly, we clicked like i never clicked with somebody else before. Made jokes how something is gonna happen to her and she was like just let me have a gin and tonic first and i was like il let you have two of those because im a nice one. Later on we went to a second place to have drinks and i started to make extensive eye contact with her because i was all over the head with this girl (im not a type of guy that something like that happens to often in fact it never did to be honest even tho i see alot of girls and go out alot and usualy i hide myself pretty well like im mysterous and women told me they cannont read me no matter how hard they try and they really like that about me some even told me i have no emotions and im like a stone)
Back to the story, she was like dont look at me like that because you make me nervous and i was like look at you like what? (i knew exactly like what ha) I continued to do that and later while we went back to the hotel ( she wanted to walk) i grabbed her hand and we walked and made jokes all they way back while holding hands. When we came to the hotel she was like im sleepy and i was like then you should go. She wanted to sit outside before she went up so we did. We talked and talked and the story i going with was that we probbably not gonna see eachoter ever again and thats what i stuck with. She said if i wanted to see her i would and i was like i have no time and she said again if you wanted you would. We talked and ifor some reason i had abnormal urge to kiss her like ive known her for idk how much time, i never felt such a strong and weird feeling like that, i basiclly fully fell for her in matter of hours ( crazy i know) I told her listen i dont expect anything from you i just want to kiss you and leave. She was like you are sick since your nose is runny etc ( i i told her before that my voice is funny today) and kinda rejcted me because she has flights almost daily. Eventually we started making out and had an intense session next to the hotel and even on the hotel wall haha ( people that passed by really gave us the looks some even like dam even tho it was late) After 2 days i was like i have to see you again, idk why i just have to. We texted for few days , was going amazing she texted me i text her but she was busy a little. Then she invited me to come with her and her cabin crew friends for a night out so i did , told me i could join them basicly and i was like fuck it.( finally haha) We had one of the most amazing nights ever, i took them to a club, got the best seats because i know the bouncers ( no reservation, nothing).sime girls started talking to me there and she got a little jelous i mean she told me she doesnt like me doing that but later we made it uo by having sex in the club and she asked me there to come to her hotel room after, we made a pinky promise and left the club toilete haha.I paid everything ( cabs and all, not that it matters just saying and she even got mad at me because of that a little).After that she basiclly sneaked me in to the hotel we ran to the elevators and she forgot something at the reception so she got called back then later we laughed that the guy saw us. I did everything perfectly and then we had sex in hotel, talked, cuddled etc. I told her that im never this honest but i just wanted her to know that in few hours she made me feel so alive and that girls in my city couldnt do that even im few months. But i said i dont expect anything from her still but i just wanted to be honest for the first time. Then i left before she woke up because she fell alseep after 15 min after sex. I tought that was a manly thing to do even tho i wanted to stay so bad. I left her a note that said text me and some name i called her ( a song) and P.S you snore a little :). The note was on the napkin, placed on my side of the bed next to her. That same day at nighttime she texted me and i was like oh yes oh yes (i couldnt stop thinking about her because i felt so amazing and alive). We exhanged few text like before i joked about how if i survive the night ( i was out partying) im gonna see her again for the third time and the lucky charm. The she just dissapeard.Completly ghosted me. Didnt respond to my last few messages about that thirdt time, didnt even seen them on wa. (no read status) So after a day and a half i texted her again sending her a picture of a place she wanted to go while she was here (it was closed before, season just opened) and asked her you wanna go?. No response, no read so i tought maybe her wa is broken due to some number thing so i texted her on ig asking is it that or she just ghosted me and whatever it is i think i deserve to know. She seen that like 10h after ive sent it and then after another 10h she just blocked me everywhere and thats it. I dont understand what happend and why would she text me the same day responding to my note if it was just a one night stand for her or if she didnt want to see me or continue to talk with me (side note she had like a week, week and a half left in my city when that happend)

Long story short, 10 days ago it happened to me on WA, it started on Tinder, to IG to WA. We had a short intimate video call on WA. She is a real woman since we first video called normally where she was answering questions and such.
From all that happening, the evidence I gathered were:

• An IG username, name and pfp
• 2 Filipino WA numbers, 1 of her, 1 of the scammer

I had no evidence of the threats made since I didn't even open those messages, I went straight to block and report.
Anyway, so many days later I go look at my blocked numbers on WA and it appears each of them have pfp now. The bait woman has herself on it again just a different pic, while the scammers number now has a new woman on it.
On top of all that, I searched the IG name, not username since that account used against me doesn't exist anymore. And what do you know, a new IG has already been set up with the same name as before and now the same pfp as the WA number she used. That IG has 200 ish followers and everything.
They really don't care about being caught it seems, it took me a minute ot 2 to find their new setup again. I screenshotted and reported all I could find so far but I wanna do more to prevent more victims, what are my best options?

I am making a new updated post with an mysterious issue with my Load Order. I am either missing something or something is cooperating. I could use a couple extra sets of eyes to see if I have missed anything. I am trying to build a working load order for the next gen update. Currently I have removed some mods and patched some that were made aware to me to be trouble some. Yet here I am again and this time I timed the crash intervals. Its crashing exactly between 6-8 minutes. Also while walking through sanctuary I noticed trees in the background flickering in and out. This tells me somethings not working as intended.
My PC Specs are as follows:
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X at 5.6ghz
64Gb DDR4 Ram at 3600mhz
Nvidia RTX 4080 at stock settings
Samsung 970 Evo M.2 SSD
Neither my cpu or gpu hit 50% load and I'm wondering if there is a way to let the game use more cpu and gpu, if that'll help.
I have only made it to Sanctuary each time I test this and yes I create a new game each time until I get this narrowed down. I also am not sure if Bethini works properly as every time I run it I have to redo all the settings each time.

Alright so besides the funny title, I am making a new updated post with an mysterious issue with my Load Order. I am either missing something or something is cooperating. I could use a couple extra sets of eyes to see if I have missed anything. I am trying to build a working load order for the next gen update. Currently I have removed some mods and patched some that were made aware to me to be trouble some. Yet here I am again and this time I timed the crash intervals. Its crashing exactly between 6-8 minutes. Also while walking through sanctuary I noticed trees in the background flickering in and out. This tells me somethings not working as intended.
My PC Specs are as follows:
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X at 5.6ghz
64Gb DDR4 Ram at 3600mhz
Nvidia RTX 4080 at stock settings
Samsung 970 Evo M.2 SSD
Neither my cpu or gpu hit 50% load and I'm wondering if there is a way to let the game use more cpu and gpu, if that'll help.
I have only made it to Sanctuary each time I test this and yes I create a new game each time until I get this narrowed down. I also am not sure if Bethini works properly as every time I run it I have to redo all the settings each time.

I have had a weird encounter with a REA agent and wanted a second perspective on this encounter – it didn’t feel fair like the other dealings we have had.
Context – house advertised in a WA suburb with median price of 580k. Home was inviting offers from 600s and sold as-is i.e., no inspections (pest & structural). We are going in with a LVR of 90% with pre-approval – we do understand 90% might be unfavourable in today's market.
Events that transpired –

1. We attended home open
2. Asked REA on price guide prior to putting our offer in – agent said he has had nothing crazy yet and we will be competitive in the low 600s
3. We saw similar properties go for low 600s and noted this is a corner block facing a beautiful park
4. Agent asked us what range we are putting a bid in for – round about mid 600s (maybe we did not need to say that)
5. Agent was extremely surprised and said “Are you sure you want to go that high? What about your bank’s valuation? I wouldn’t touch 650” We bid in the 630s.
6. REA agent said no need to sign it – they will present the offer without signature and contract.

Fast forward, the home is now sold and our offer in the 630s was rejected. We asked for feedback and got this response
“Unfortunately, your offer was unsuccessful. Your 90% borrowing was undesirable and there was a higher offer – not by that much”.
I am obvs a bit infuriated at being put off when I wanted to bid 650. Maybe I was a bit naïve listening to the REA agent or disclosing my offer on the phone? I am a bit lost because I have never had a REA agent bring my offer down - is it not in their interest to take the highest offer. It is also the first time I’ve not had to sign an offer.
Thoughts? Maybe I’m overthinking this.

I’m wondering if there is any potential expansion for fiber in my area? Rosalia, WA. There is a fiber line a block away from my house that I know of. Wondering on a timeline or if/when that line will potentially be expanded down the block. From what I understand, my house has underground power, no overheads and I know that Ziply has been prioritizing overhead lines as they are easier. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Ok so, I used to have a childhood friend. Lets call him Tommy (not his real name i dont wanna say it). We used to go to the beach together every summer, I know him better than his own mother. We used to play games all day together and generally have fun and live an amazing life. After a while tho, on 9th grade, he found other two friends, Mike and Billy. I was good acquaintances with Mike as well, having invited him to my house many times but I had a feeling he was fake, but anyways. I had an another good friend as well, let's call him John. I was very good friends with him too, as we showed common interests such as cars, he was also very supportive as well. John was 2 years older than me. So after a while while being friends with Tommy and John simultaneously, we decided to form a group together! Tommy also brought his other 2 friends Mike and Billy, so we were 5 people. After a while tho, I did the mistake to do some childish joke to John, let's just say it was cringe, and we started arguing And I ended up getting suspended for 1 day from school. After some time we starred arguing about cars. You hears that right, CARS. He was forever saying that Japanese cars were better than German cars, which made me really mad because I believed the exact opposite. This is when the group started failling apart, even his mother got mad at me and John hated talking to me. I remember on July 29th of 2023, it was a nice sunny day, and I was talking with my best friend Tommy, until he accidentally mentioned that the friend group was often hanging out without telling me anything! I said "why didn't you tell me earlier?" And he started saying some things like "we were about to invite you" then I decided he was a fake friend and his friend group, so I left them. To add tbe cherry on top, I even got my ass bullied, being called offensive things. After I begged my dad to take me home, after 8 days of suffering. I tried playing games all day to distract myself from my problems but then school started after 2 weeks on September. I just started high school btw, so I had to get to know my classmates,I was hoping after my terrible experiences I could make some friends, but somehow everyone knew each other, and I knew none of them. I was left alone. Then 2 months after the incident of July 29th, on September 29th I decided to go back to my old friend and start discussing about a new friendship and leaving everything in the past. And he agreed! I also got to get back to the old friend group, but this time without John as he had changed schools. And Tommy then started inviting me to his house many times and generally we were very good, there was one problem however. Even tho I had my friends back, I was still a little bit depressed, just a little bit. It was almost gone but due to my previous experiences probably I got depression stuck. That's alright tho, I thought it wa probably the school. Then after some time I started gaining popularity in school and generally everything was good. I even got to talk to some of my classmates. UNTIL, on February 22th, something happened to me and i was very mad. Mike was actually a YouTube shorts user, and he always sent annoying cringe videos, tbe I started complaining but I did it in a very bad way, telling him bad things and told him to get a life, which I really regret. Then we started arguing, after a while Tommy decided to kick me out out of the friend group and he said he didn't want to talk to me for 3 months. He literally grounded me from talking to him for 3 months. I apologized many times to him and told him I had regretted my actions. He didn't want to forgive me tho, he wanted to force me to change my personality because he thought I was a bad guy. Then we started arguing, after a few days I came back to him , and I insisted he either talked to me then or never. And he chose never, after that I almost had a mental breakdown. Again, I believed he was a fake friend. Soemtime be messaged me saying ironically "I hope you have an amazing summer." And then he said "hello, I'm never talking to you again" and I started saying bad things to him and eventually blocked him. Since then I have been depressed and lonely, my popularity had also been declining since January so I couldn't make friends anymore. Now I'm depressed, I even feel Su****l at some point. I really regret what I did, and I miss my best friend, even tho i believe he was fake. I really miss him. Let's not forget that summer is coming soon in a few days, and I'm most likely to spend it alone....
Do you think he was fake? Should I go back to him? Is it mostly my fault? What should I do? I can't be depressed anymore! Please help me!

It's been 9 days now since there was an attempt by a Filipino scammer to sextort me. I only had 1 short video call (less than 1 minute) and my face was never in the same frame as my body (front cam <> back cam). She was real. Why? We had 1 or 2 normal video calls where she answered questions and interacted with me. She had a verified Tinder account and everything.
None of this mattered in the end since after the intimate call, I got threats from a second Filipino number on WA. I know this was the scammer cause I saw that I got notifications using FULL CAPS and some images were sent to me. However, I'll never know what they said exactly since I didn't even open that chat, I blocked and reported him instantly. Most likely like everyone else, there was an amount asked and lists of friends or whatever they could gather.
Again, I did not pay, limited all forms of communication anywhere by putting my profiles on max privacy and made it so search engines don't show my socials. I took all measures I could and even filed the little evidence such as both their Filipino numbers as well as the IG account to the police.
All this being said, I wanna move on. I want to believe that if nothing more came from it after 9 days and counting, I'm in the clear. I know it'll take longer for me to really return to normal but I think I can be almost 100% confident they moved on to many more other victims that do sadly pay.
Finally, if anyone else has been in the clear for this long or longer, please comfort me and others by sharing your story and experiences. This forum has been helping me more than most can imagine. So thank you all again who reassure others, help them and comfort them in any way!

Okay I have been playing for the last few weeks since the NG update came out and surprisingly at first the game was running smooth with mods. Ever since F4SE and related mods have been updating I have literally had the game crash on me every 5 to 10 minutes. I have scoured the internet and tried every fix I could find to no avail. Buffout 4 hasnt been updated for NG yet so I am not getting crash reports.

Welcome back once more, for our final discussion of Armadale. I apologize again for the discussion being late. Last week, my excuse was that I had to spend time with my sister's family, including a labradoodle. This week, I am dog-sitting my mother's beagle, who has separation anxiety and gas. I am horribly sleep-deprived because this dog insists on sleeping next to my bed every night, snoring loudly and farting. Speaking of people breathing in poison in their sleep, let's get to the recap:
Allan has just set off for the Adriatic, with his cash converted to gold, obviously the result of Manuel's suggestions. Lydia and Ozias have been transferred to Turin by Ozias's employer, and Lydia pretends to have gotten a letter from her mother, asking her to come home, so she has an excuse to go back to London. Once there, she checks the newspaper for any articles or obituaries indicating that Allan has died. She also finds Mother Oldershaw's new address, but decides not to visit her.
After a few days, she finally gets the news she's been hoping for. Allan's yacht sunk off the southern coast of Italy, and everyone on board perished. Her next step is to write to Bashwood:
My dearest Bashwood,
I desire you... I mean, I desire to *meet with you... to apologize for my previous behavior towards you. I have foolishly made the mistake of marrying an immature child. If only I had married a real man (realness not necessarily extending to his teeth and hair)!*
Please, do not show this letter to anyone. Let us meet clandestinely.

Lydia then considers the marriage certificate, and realizes a glaring flaw in her plan: Ozias's handwriting looks nothing like Allan's. In a panic, she decides that her only option is to get advice from Mother Oldershaw. Unfortunately, Mother Oldershaw appears to have found God, and no longer wants anything to do with Lydia's plans. (Of course, she refuses to give Lydia the signed paper that she was going to use to extort money from Lydia if her plans succeeded.)
While leaving Oldershaw's, Lydia runs into Dr. Downward... excuse me, Dr. Le Doux, totally legitimate sanitarium owner. She realizes that he may be able to advise her, and asks to meet him later at the sanitarium. The sanitarium is basically what you'd expect a 19th-century sanitarium to be: creepy old house with shelves containing jars of preserved "creatures," a "galvanic apparatus" for providing electric shocks, etc. No patients yet, though.
Lydia tells the doctor her story, leaving out the worst details (he doesn't know that she's the reason the yacht sunk, or that her husband goes by the fake name "Ozias Midwinter"). Downward agrees to assist her by claiming to be a witness to the marriage... for a fee of six hundred pounds. Lydia agrees, and he assists her in sending a letter to Thorpe Ambrose, claiming to be Allan's widow.
The next day, Lydia gets a visit from Bashwood, who delivers the news that Neelie is beside herself with grief, and Mr. Darch is handling the matter of the inheritance, which was going to go to Allan's cousin, before Lydia announced her claim.
Bashwood returns a few days later with a shocking letter from Yugoslavia: Allan is alive! This is where I'd normally try to write a funny version of the letter, but nothing I could possibly write would be funnier than the actual letter's opening line: "I have been the victim of a rascally attempt at robbery and murder." Yes, "rascally." Oh, Allan, never change. One of the would-be murderers took pity on Allan and didn't securely board up his cabin, so he was able to escape instead of sinking with the yacht.
Lydia turns to Downward for help.
Downward: What if we trap Allan in the sanitarium?
Lydia: And murder him?
Downward: WTF, no. We get him to agree to not press legal charges against us.
Lydia: And then we murder him?
Downward: I have so many regrets about teaming up with you
Lydia: How do we catch him?
Downward: You could get Bashwood to lurk around the train station and intercept him before anyone else sees him. Have him tell Allan that Miss Milroy was sent here because she was driven insane by her grief for him.
Lydia: Can we murder Allan and Miss Milroy?
Downward: I am running an unlicensed sanitarium under a false name, and even I think you're unhinged.
Lydia: Gwilty as charged
Downward: But wait, what if he doesn't agree immediately, and we have to keep him here for months? What if I have actual patients at the time, and they report us?
Lydia: What if...
Downward: ...please don't say "murder"
Lydia: ...what if he had an accident?
Downward: Oh. Well, if it was an "accident," that would be okay. I don't know how an accident could happen, though, if you aren't an inmate here.
Lydia: I'll think about it
Meanwhile, Bashwood keeps vigil at the train station, until one day he sees... Ozias, who is searching for Lydia because she's stopped writing to him. While they talk to each other, Bashwood can't contain his shock at hearing that Lydia is Ozias's wife, and accidentally calls her "Mrs. Armadale," which understandably makes Ozias suspicious, so he follows Bashwood to see where he goes, which of course leads him straight to Lydia. Lydia pretends she was never married to Ozias, and Ozias faints from the shock.
Lydia heads straight to the sanitarium, tells Downward she's going to be an inmate, and asks for a sleeping draught. Downward prepares the draught, but first places yellow liquid in a purple flask. He then informs Lydia of what he thinks they should say at the inquest after Allan dies: The two of them knew he hadn't drowned, but when he arrived in England, they decided to trap him in the sanitarium because, shortly after his marriage to Lydia, Allan had starting having a delusion that he was engaged to Neelie. Once in the sanitarium, Downward diagnosed Allan with an incurable and fatal brain ailment, and that's what killed him.
Downward has scheduled a "Visitors' Day" so that people will witness Lydia as an inmate in the asylum. The visitors are mostly women, because life as a woman in Victorian England was so boring, they had nothing better to do than go to sanitariums to gawk at the mentally ill people and see where they will eventually live when the hysteria finally drives them mad. (I am only barely paraphrasing. The actual quote is "In the miserable monotony of the lives led by a large section of the middle classes of England, anything is welcome to the women which offers them any sort of harmless refuge from the established tyranny of the principle that all human happiness begins and ends at home.")
Downward shows them around the sanitarium and explains how it will be run, including only allowing novels that make people feel comfortable. (I assumed this was an intentional satire of Wilkie's critics, and the notes in the Oxford World's Classics edition confirmed this.)
But then Downward gave a sales pitch that damn near sold me on his sanitarium. "I throw up impregnable moral intrenchments between Worry and You. ... Will ten minutes’ irritation from a barking dog or a screeching child undo every atom of good done to a nervous sufferer by a month’s medical treatment? There isn’t a competent doctor in England who will venture to deny it!" Considering I almost couldn't post last week's discussion because of a few hours' exposure to two loud children and a labradoodle, I'm about ready to self-diagnose with hysteria and deranged lunacy.
He also explains that while the bedrooms lack fireplaces, they're heated with hot water. This impressed me because I've read about Victorian insane asylums not having fireplaces in the bedrooms (since the inmates might burn themselves), but I always assumed this meant that the inmates were cold in the winter. But wait... the bedroom also has secret controls that let him open, close, and lock the window and door from the outside, and a vent that lets him pump gas into the room. Whaaat? I rescind my diagnosis of hysteria and deranged lunacy. I want nothing to do with this.
After the tour is finished, Downward demonstrates to Lydia how to prepare the poison, and then breaks the bottle so that his assistant (who doesn't know about the purple flask) will think there's no more of that chemical in the house.
Meanwhile, Ozias is stalking Bashwood at the train station. He thinks Lydia is cheating on him, and Bashwood is waiting for Lydia's lover. But then he sees Bashwood with Allan. After confronting the two of them, he learns Bashwood's story about having to take Allan to Neelie in the sanitarium. Realizing that Lydia is probably still behind Bashwood's actions, Ozias insists on going with the two of them. On arriving at the sanitarium, Allan is informed that Neelie cannot see him until the morning, but he and Ozias are welcome to spend the night: Allan in Room Four, and Ozias in Room Three.
Lydia sets Bashwood up to spy on Allan's door from a room with a grate in its door. She tells him to make sure Allan stays in his room all night. Later, watching from the grate, Bashwood observes Ozias leave his room and examine the fumigating apparatus connected to Allan's room. Then Ozias stuffs his handkerchief in the grate, blocking Bashwood's view, before going into Allan's room and convincing Allan to switch rooms with him.
Later that night, Lydia returns and asks Bashwood if anything happened. Too afraid to tell her about the handkerchief, he tells her nothing happened, and she dismisses him to bed. After almost convincing herself to not go through with it, she then starts the process of pouring the poison at five minute intervals. While waiting for one of the intervals to pass, she notices Ozias's handkerchief and realizes that Bashwood lied to her. She checks in Room Three, and finds Allan asleep where Ozias should be.
In a panic, Lydia rushes into Room Four and drags the unconscious Ozias out. She then continues to pour the poison, writes a last letter to Ozias, and locks herself in the room.
We end with an epilogue that rapidly ties up all the random loose ends. Lydia has been buried in a nearly unmarked grave. The doctor is apparently still running his sanitarium. Allan and Neelie will be married in the spring. Mrs. Milroy doesn't have much longer to live, but she's undergone a personality change for some reason and she and the Major are happy for once. Ozias is recovering and living with Allan. Mother Oldershaw is a religious speaker, apparently. Bashwood has gone insane. Manuel drowned.
But wait, one last thing: Wilkie has something to say to us. He wants us to know that he intended the dream to be left up to interpretation. Thanks for handing me a discussion question like that, Wilkie. He also shares a weird-ass story about how, after he'd finished the rough draft and while the story was in the middle of serialization, several people were poisoned in their sleep on a boat called The Armadale. Okay, Wilkie. Thank you for that incredibly weird anecdote.
