Paying Ontario servers less than minimum wage

2024.05.14 19:23 passionforlife1998 Paying Ontario servers less than minimum wage

Hello,
New to this subreddit but after having browsed a bit - I feel this question is appropriate for here.
In Ontario, the government did away with server minimum wage, and now servers are paid the current adult minimum wage of 16.55.
Recently, a bar owner I’m familiar with has stated that if he gets his employees to sign a contract when they start their employment - he can get them agree to a reduced hourly wage (at the discretion of the business owner), say $10, to be paid by the business owner, and that the remaining 6.55 (more come October) will be made up by their tips.
Is this legal?
Basically he says he can get a new server to sign a form agreeing to work for him for $10/ hour contingent on tips making up the rest. What’s stopping Ontario business owners from not paying their servers an hourly at all if they’re making $200/ 5 hours in tips (or at least an average of 16.55/ hour)
Thank you in advance

2024.05.14 19:23 Abusedbyredditjerks AITA for burning bridges with my current clients?

… or am I an idiot? We have small business in architectural services and this years has been really busy for us that we pivoted from spec homes (new builds) to custom builds. The reason from pivoting was not only that we got larger, and our fees changed. We also start to focus more on creating projects instead of running through jobsites. On top of it, I really hated every minute to deal with contractors & changes specifically for spec homes. The arrogance, the blame game… spec home services are always lower fees because we don’t have to (should not) deal with the custom clients nuances but we do anyway which makes it not worth it.
That being said we hoped that we can maintain a few contractor projects on the side for rainy days. Contractor1 was one of my first clients and biggest one who referred me to another Contractor2. One day C1 screamed in rage at me during phone call and made me cry. He never called to apologize & I haven’t spoke with him since. Projects are still in the process so it’s awkward.
Meanwhile the contractor2 keeps asking me to do stuff for him (as favor) and answer questions he should know as GC. He’s not even asking but telling me what to do like I am his employee while some tasks are his own responsibility. Because these annoyances with C2 have been pararell with issues with C1 , when the C2 asked me to do XY, I said I won’t do it and it’s his responsibility. He got passive (sort of aggressive) attitude and didn’t take it well…. He made it seem like me saying this, was a mistake (“now I know what you are about”). He doesn’t involve me on the projects anymore … yes he’s short.
Now these 2 contractors are not as important in my city and they only do their own spec projects….. but It kinda hurts to loose clients especially during project progress, first because I don’t know if they will ever say that they didn’t like working with me, second yes, it is personal….third, I am missing opportunity to photograph the projects in progress (likely credits). And lastly, my business is not thaaaat developed to loose the opportunity for more referrals.
Frankly, my history is being nice to people and do XY, until I am not. (Yes it can be a quick change). I usually prefer when I am left alone doing my work, and I don’t ask people for help or free favors either. I know time is money so if I do ask, I expect to discuss costs (Or at least I ask nicely, not like a dictator). And therefore I really really don’t like to hear from others what to do if it’s not included in my service agreement per flat fee and on top of it being shut down if I say no.
I don’t even know what I expect from this post. Somehow I feel insecure, somehow I feel I mean, somehow I feel reasonable and somehow I feel maybe they were right. There are people who could definitely handle this better without creating a conflict, and still keep the jobs. But I don’t know….

2024.05.14 19:21 OddClimate4206 How to Script a Form

Hello,
I am trying to make a standard PDF form wherein Page 1 is text entered into form fields and page 2 is a narrative format (think report style).
For page 1, I want to ask standard questions and have the form fields in those sections get linked to certain areas of the narrative on page 2.
For example, page 1 would have a field that says “what is the employees first name?” then there’s a form field to enter the first name to its right.
Then I’d like the value of the form field from page 1 to get copied into a certain area in page 2 in the same font and format as the surrounding text.
For example, “[value of field 1, page 1] joined the company in 2023.”
Is this something that could be done using JavaScript? Or any other Microsoft Office product?

Out there - Patreon (for all those curious or wanting to support :))
At the Beginning
Adventure Arc - Arc 2
Wilderness Arc - Arc 3
Academy Arc - Arc 4
Nobility Arc - Arc 5
Previously on Leveling up the World...
Reality shifted, transforming into an endless forest of purple glowing vines among green and yellow trees. Minuscule creatures of all shapes and sizes flew about. To the untrained eye they seemed charming, even beautiful, yet they were all parasites taking advantage of the richness of magic threads for sustenance. They weren’t the problem, though. Other entities were also present in force—aether golems.
Summoning a clay cylinder, Dallion unleashed a ray of destruction, shattering hundreds of the crimson-purple constructs like glass. The spell was followed by a spark infused spiral attack directly below.

Realm section damaged!
Overall completion 78%

Large chunks of land erupted at the impact, transforming into clouds of dirt high up in the air. Thankfully, there didn’t seem to be any more golems hidden in the soil.
“Seventy-eight,” Dallion said as he gently floated to the ground. “Mages really don’t maintain anything, do they?”
The life of academia is filled with its own challenges, dear boy, Adzorg protested, practically admitting the statement. That’s a domain ruler’s job.
“I suppose it is.”
Dallion looked at his feet. They were there, along with his shoes and the lower part of his trousers. Nothing seemed to be wrong with them, yet this was only a fake projection. In the real world, they no longer existed.
There’s no reason to be alarmed. With your magic and body levels, you should be able to have them restored in a matter of months. Until then, you’ll just have to use aether stand-ins, or even a good illusion, if you prefer.
Dallion considered it. If there was someone who’d know, that would be Adzorg. The mage had his hands severed not too long ago. Looking at him now, no one would be able to guess that they had been gradually restored over the course of months.

REALM INVASION

Red rectangles filled the sky.
“Seems like they’ve taken me seriously.” Dallion stood up. His real-life troubles would have to wait.
Knowing Alien, he probably only modified the golems to treat you as an intruder. The area guardian must have stepped in.
“Doesn’t the emperor control this? Or an overseer?”
The Academy has always been sort of different, dear boy, Adzorg explained. While we serve the emperor, we’re technically autonomous.
“Like the Order.”
To a certain degree. Think of this realm as isolated. That’s why moving it around isn’t as easy as moving everything else. Due to the magic concentration and frequent experiments, the area has become… more susceptible to other worlds. That’s why I did my experiments here—it’s far easier to break through the protective barrier here than elsewhere. Well, except the fallen south, possibly. The old mage added with a brief laugh. To prevent anything spilling out into the rest of Tamin’s domain, the Academy is isolated from everything else.
“That shouldn’t stop him from coming here in case he wants to,” Dallion said.
Not in the least. That doesn’t make it desirable, though.
That was a strange statement. There were too many benefits for the emperor not to get involved. Even if he were afraid that someone might do what he had done to the archbishop. Either way, the faster Dallion could take control of the domain, the better. He knew he couldn’t keep it, but that wouldn’t prevent him from transporting a few pieces to his own territory. As for what was left, he’d make sure that no one could take advantage of it in the future.
Aqui, he said within his personal realm.
The orange-scaled dragon emerged within seconds. Ten times larger than in the real world, she was doing her best to present herself larger than she actually was. Even so, her present level was clearly visible should anyone look at her white rectangle.
“Grasped the concept of eating?” Dallion looked at her.
The large dragon snarled.
“Can you do it from within the realm?”
The anger changed into bewilderment.
“No one can consume magic from within a realm,” she said defensively. Dallion knew for a fact that wasn’t the case. He himself had done so many times and he wasn’t the only one.
“What about outside? How fast can you drain the area of magic?”
“Why?” She lowered her head, bringing it to Dallion’s level.
“I’m going to do something and when I do, we’ll have to get out of here quickly.”
The dragon snorted right at Dallion.
“It would be nice if you can reach level ten at least.”
Pride filled the dragon’s body, as blue blobs the size of houses emerged within her. There was no way that she would only level up to such a low level. Of course, Dallion’s subtle use of music skills had also helped in the making of the decision.
Before anyone could say anything more, a cluster of aether cones flew straight at him. Free of the confines of reality, the armadil shield teleported between him and the projectiles, growing three times its size.
Unable to counter the force, Gem was pushed back dozens of feet to the point it reached Dallion himself. Extending one hand, the otherworlder easily countered the attack.
Aquilequia, on her part, had used her natural speed to move away before the cones even got close.
“Best leave.” He said, glancing at her new location. “After I’m done, I’ll need you to be at least as strong as this.”
The dragon didn’t respond, yet didn’t leave the realm, either. Curious as every low-level companion, she moved a safe distance away, eager to see exactly what was referred to. Meanwhile, Dallion sprang into action. With speed surpassing that of Aquilequia, he dashed around the shield, heading straight for the source of the aether cones. To little surprise, they were being released from five spell circles, at huge intensity. More curious was the entity that had cast them.

LEARNING HALL GUARDIAN
Species: COPYETTE
Class: SHADOW
Health: 78%
Traits:
- BODY 45
- MIND 60
- REACTION 55
- PERCEPTION 50
- MAGIC 100
Skills:
- ATTACK
- GUARD
- ACROBATICS
- SCHOLAR
- CARVING
- MUSIC
- SPELLCRAFT
Weakness: NONE

“Never thought you’d be a copyette,” Dallion said as he performed a series of slashes targeting vital points on the guardian.
Each of them hit, yet instead of red rectangles, the form transformed into cyan sludge that splashed onto the ground.
“Lucky coincidence?” Dallion split into instances, using his music skills to add doubt and weight into his words. “Or were you working for the Order all this time?”
“Nice to see you too, apprentice.” A new figure formed. It was very different from the first, taking on the form of Alien. Spells circles formed in different spots hundreds of feet from Dallion, each releasing anything from lightning to aether shards.
Despite the overwhelming amount, not a single one of Dallion’s instances got harmed. Performing a three-sixty line attack with his harpsisword, he sliced through the new appearance of the guardian, breaking the spell circles in the process.
Don’t be overconfident, Giaccia said. Experience trumps level every time.
There was no way Dallion could disagree. There was a time when he, too, had defeated opponents many levels above him. While it was said that a ten-level difference was insurmountable, the guardian was a copyette with a very high magic trait.
“You can always surrender,” Dallion said, looking in all directions with his instances.
“It’s just like you to offer.” Two forms of the guardian appeared in different locations, now taking on the forms of children in Dallion’s class. “And no, I’m not working for Simon, even if he put me here.”
Dallion dashed, appearing next to one of his former classmates, slicing it to bits using a multi attack.
“Wrong one.” The other form laughed.
Dallion was fully aware that both of them were wrong. His real goal was to try and figure out where the rest of the guardian was hiding. As a copyette, he could create dozens of copies, all an insignificant part of his overall body. Destroying each individual one wouldn’t do anything; harming the one considered the main one might.
He’s stalling for time, Giaccia said.
“Your music attacks are rather good.” Two more copyette forms emerged. “Sadly, it doesn’t depend on me. You’ll have to deal with the main guardian for that. I’m just here to obtain information. Being a hunter, you should know that.”
“It’s been a while since I was a hunter,” Dallion replied. “I’m not an apprentice, either.”
“That’s true. You made full mage, didn’t you? Also, I heard that you were an archduke shortly before rebelling. Quite the achievement.”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m just like my grandfather.” Dallion let it slip.
“Your grandfather?” Confusion emanated from the copyette. “I was about to say that you’re like Jeremy. A lot more straightforward, to be sure, but the drive is there along with the skill.”
Going by large areas, there had to be roughly ten guardians responsible for the realm. Defeating them would effectively make Dallion the new owner. A faster and more challenging way, though, was taking on the main guardian.
No time to hesitate, the harpsisword Guardian reminded Dallion.
It would be a lie to say that Dallion wasn’t. Even with all the copyette’s tricks, he had enough raw power to defeat the guardian, destroying a large part of the realm in the process. It was no accident that of all the key guardians, this one had been sent to reveal his skills. Dallion had spent a significant part of his life in the Learning Hall. While not particularly long in terms of time, it had marked a significant change in Dallion’s life. Before that he was little more than a skill game piece—barely defeating the Star, he was on the run from Countess Priscord, and in debt to the void. His life at the learning hall of the Academy had elevated him to the point that the emperor, the Order, and even the Moons themselves had taken notice.
“Yes.” Dallion sighed. “There’s no time for hesitation.”
Summoning his aura sword, he slashed the air, casting a flight spell that propelled him up like a rocket. Half a mile above the ground, he stopped.
“Sorry, Learning Hall,” he said, slashing the air in what appeared to be a multi attack. Magic symbols and connections were drawn, yet instead of casting multiple five-circle spells, Dallion cast one complex spell chain.
A vortex of spell circles emerged beneath him, shooting bolts of magic draining lightning.

Realm section damaged!
Overall completion 77%

Realm section damaged!
Overall completion 76%

Red rectangles popped up as the ground became covered in craters. Aether projectiles shot up to him in response, most of them blocked by the aether shield before reaching Dallion himself.
“Thanks, but no need,” Dallion unsummoned the shield, unwilling to have it be accidentally affected by his magic draining spell.

CRITICAL STRIKE
Dealt damage is increased by 200%

A few purple rectangles appeared among the mass of red. At the current rate, the Learning Hall guardian would be defeated in a matter of seconds. Hopefully, there would be enough left for Dallion to restore afterwards. Were this to be the Hall’s realm, there would be no concern on the matter—defeating a guardian merely improved it. In this case, the realm was the Academy, though, not the Learning Hall itself.
Suddenly, a sun gold colossus emerged less than a few hundred feet away. A massive hand reached out and grabbed the vortex from beneath Dallion. Sparks of lightning enveloped the fingers, yet had no effect whatsoever.
A second hand reached for Dallion himself, but he had already darted further back, safely avoiding the attack.
So, that’s the Academy? Dallion looked at the glittering mountain of gold. When it came to the colossus, he shared many of the same characteristics. The one major difference was the colossus’ “attire.” Not the usual Roman-Greek design that Dallion had seen before, the design followed twenty century Earth norms.
“It’s been ages since a domain ruling mage has ventured in this realm,” the colossus said in a booming voice. “You’re the second so far.”
“What happened to the first?” Dallion concentrated. Not a single domain marker appeared anywhere along the guardian’s body.
“He created this area and made sure that no other mage will be able to take it.”

2024.05.14 19:19 bambambigelowww Spouse doesn’t have health insurance - how to avoid penalty

We live in NJ. My spouse lost her job last year and opened an S Corp in January and has been without health insurance. She’s the only employee of the S Corp. I guess it’s too late for her to join my plan. For some silly reason, it’s mandated in NJ to have health insurance but at the same time she isn’t allowed to join my plan or get an ACA plan because there’s no qualified life event. So I’ll repeat that: she’s mandated to have it but not allowed to have it. This is crazy to me. But ok. Is there any way to avoid the penalty ? We make a lot of money combined so I think the penalty would be around $7k and that’s without any coverage. Having coverage would be cheaper lol. Of course , knock on wood, hopefully she won’t need to use the coverage until she can join my insurance on Jan 1st. She’s healthy so no doctor appointments needed unless there’s a true emergency. If she could join my benefits that would be amazing. But as a worst case scenario , if she doesn’t have benefits until Jan 1, is there any way to avoid the 7k penalty that NJ would charge ? One exemption says if you have a utility shut off notice you’re exempt. If we don’t pay the electric bill for 2 months, get a letter in the mail, and then pay it , would that work? Another exemption I saw was religious. Anywhere there to prove ? This was obviously a lie and terrible mistake and we will get her on my insurance as soon as allowed , I just want to atleast avoid the penalty , which again to me is really silly. Especially with how high our taxes are regardless.

2024.05.14 19:18 SourTittyMilk Foreign workers leaving Saskatchewan after receiving PR

Learned the hard way this morning after dealing with SINP helping one of my employees receive his permanent residency. I told him we would put him through the apprenticeship program once he gets his PR. He received it last week. This morning he handed his 2 weeks notice saying he’s moving to Alberta. He told me that it was the plan all along and it’s easier to receive their PR is Sask then any other province.
Can’t help but feel let down but is there anything that could’ve been done to prevent it? In my industry we’re seeing more and more foreign workers with hardly any Canadian born. Is it even legal to have a contract to work at my shop for a certain amount of time after receiving their PR? Anyone else dealing with this issue?

2024.05.14 19:17 ContestOk5072 10 Years Experience SE and Low Pay

I’ve recently hit the 10 year mark at my company as a Software Engineer and my low pay, which I’ve come to accept over time, is starting to be felt with inflation and I wanted to check just how low on the scale of pay I am before considering a job search.
I’m a Software Engineer 2 promoted about 5 years ago from level 1 now and making around $75k base pay with annual bonus of 3-4%. I’ve made my name known at my current company and received compliments from other devs that I’m a good Developer and I am seen as an asset to management. That being said, my confidence in myself is low pretty much everywhere, hence why I’ve stayed with the same company that hired me straight out of school over a decade ago now. I was lucky to have even received this job offer as a MIS graduate who had no aspirations of working as a Software Engineer.
This job is very plush for me and it’s 100% remote and low stress. Management is really good and independence high for myself. I know I could have it a lot worse, but I find myself a couple times a year getting the itch to leave and make more money and possibly throw those comforts out the window. Bills are starting to pile up between medical bills, special diets and everyday grocery bills, student loans, etc. I want to be able to save for my family at some point.
Another thing is that my wife who works as a QA Analyst, is making 95% of my pay after less time at her current company. We have the same credentials in school and she is two years younger. I love that she makes what she does, but I feel that manual QA is not even close to the everyday job requirements of a SE and that I’m severely undervalued by my current company at this point.
I’ve talked to my Manager about pay a couple times but haven’t really pushed for an adjustment. Based on my research of my area of living and job requirements, I’m being paid the equivalent of a 0-2 level employee. I’m in the Midwest by the ways. I know this is mainly my fault for being complacent and not trying to leave earlier, but would this situation be the push for anyone else to seek employment elsewhere or am I being dramatic? Also with the way the economy and job market is currently, is now even a good time to realistically find another position with ten years of experience in the field?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

2024.05.14 19:15 niceguycoach Should I spend money on my coworkers?

Think twice before spending money on or lending paid time off to your coworkers.
Your friends at work are not the same as your friends outside of work. You can’t be fully loyal to your coworkers when your job is at stake. Nor can they be loyal to you when theirs is at stake. So it doesn’t make sense to treat them the same as your best friend that you’d be happy to give or loan money to.
Regardless, it’s okay to take time to think about it first. Ask yourself why would you want to give them the money and what you would want to get out of the transaction.
It’s possible you might be running a covert contract, meaning you’re hoping that they will somehow return the favor in the future.
Get clear on why you feel the urge to donate to them in this circumstance. Remember that you aren’t obligated to your coworkers when it comes to your personal finances and paid time off.

2024.05.14 19:15 pocolowo How to handle and entitled supervisor

Supervisor is VP and somewhat toxic. Tries to micromanage and invoke fear and “what if” situations but will “defer to you” to handle.
Everyone knows how she is and “that’s just how she is, you need to learn to handle her”.
She “forgot” her personal vehicle needed to be worked done and asked an employee if they’d pick her up from the dealership… this has happened multiple times.
She goes into others offices, taking candy, food, snacks from their desk. I’ve found her walk out of my office with snacks, and she is trying to be sneaky.
Do I react or should I just let this happen?

2024.05.14 19:11 AltruisticBee2571 Corporate Greed

I work at a Marriott Vacation Club which operates very differently than your normal hotels. Because it’s a time-share our owners paid a lot of money to own and continue to pay expensive maintenance fees. Although Marriott is definitely one of the best timeshares you can buy, starting May 1st they rolled out a new “program” called “Starter Kit Pilot Launch” which in layman terms is the definition of Corporate Greed. Many Vacation Clubs have been open for 20+ years which means owners come with a certain expectation. However this new “program” prevents any guest from requesting any new items they may run out of for example toilet paper, towels, laundry detergent, coffee bags, paper towels, tea, and literally anything else you could think of. Guest use to be able to just call or text the resort requesting whatever said items and we would deliver to there villa with no charge. Well not anymore and it’s ridiculous in my mind! The amount of money Marriott makes, there is no reason we should be charging $3 per item as I can almost guarantee that money is pure profit for Marriott and it only hurts the employees who deliver this new “news”. Apparently this only started in the east coast and they will eventually roll it out globally. Please let me know your thoughts!!

2024.05.14 19:09 Aims757 Almost 55 and time to stop working?

I was diagnosed BP 1 rapid cycling, mixed episodes with psychotic features later in life when I was 40. For the past 20 years of my career I’ve been in middle management managing up to 4 different departments and up to 20 employees. I loved what I did and have been in my field for over 30 years. I still love it but the work, the pressure, the stress…. It’s my undoing. I’ve exhausted my 12 weeks of FMLA this year already and started my 2nd round of STD leave this month. I had to leave abruptly in the middle of the last day I worked in tears, paranoid and blowing up at my HR Director. My meds have been adjusted many times this year and now that I’ve been home for 2 weeks I’m no longer fixated on ending it all. As driven as I am and as far as I got in my career I have come to realize that I need to choose between my mental health and well being or work. Have any of you made that transition later in life? And if you did do you find yourself regretting anything?
Edit: my boss is our CEO and he and the company have been very accommodating and he hasn’t given up on me. I resigned twice over the past 4 years and he refused to accept it both times. I took a reduction in salary and responsibilities when I went back to work in April and I still ended up spiraling bad.

2024.05.14 19:08 MUDDJUGG98 Why the F*** aren’t there more indoor parks?

It rains. Every. Other. Day. As a father and full time employee, I cherish the days I can skate. Because they are almost non existent. I have a couple days off here but of course the rain has to fuck that up for me too. So here we are. Looking for indoor parks. There was one called Ollie’s in my area years ago and they shut it down. Then there was one in west Chester, and it’s gone now too. So this has led me to have NO, ABSOLUTELY NO indoor parks. I can’t imagine there’s that much of a lack of skaters in my area considering the skate shop availability.

2024.05.14 19:03 rj16x Can my employer discipline me over this?

So this afternoon in the work group chat the message comes in as follows;
Boss : [unrelated message]
Boss: And no talking about pay!!
Me: to customers or eachother?
Boss: Too anyone
Me: [Screenshot of the 2010 Equality Act, stating Employees have a right to discuss Salary and employers have no legal standing to stop you talking about what you earn]
Boss: Wow
I’m not in work today so I have no idea what brought this message on, and I’m now concerned I probably shouldn’t have done that but I’m annoyed at the random rules he’s trying to enforce. And for extra context, we haven’t had our contracts yet, so no one has signed anything agreeing to anything of the sorts. What legal standing do I have with this, if he chooses to discipline me over this?

2024.05.14 19:02 Cautious_Language_13 Am I entitled to prorated benefits?

CROSS POSTED Hello! So I work for a country club that’s honestly been incredibly sketchy in how they deal with employee issues, so I want to cover my bases before talking to HR. Last year in about July or August I got moved to being a full time employee, however my boss forgot to change my coding in the system to full time, thus leading to me missing out on benefits such as eight hours of holiday pay (this adds up to over 40 hours of missed pay) vacation time, etc. Now in my head, this wasn’t my fault this was an eff up on my bosses part, but my Hpayroll person is refusing to prorate any pay or vacation time I’m rightfully entitled to. So what are my rights in this situation/what can I say to her? TIA!!

2024.05.14 19:02 pennylaneor Is it time to get a different job?

Hello! I (21f) have been a preschool teacher for a few years. Whether it’s COVID or something else, behavior has just gone downhill more than I thought possible. I just started at a Montessori school about a month ago. It pays better than most schools and I am putting myself through my Master’s program in therapy right now.
These kids have had no actual Montessori education, but the teachers are still expected to treat them and their education like they have. This means that when the throw things, refuse to listen, hit and push, we cannot correct them with any sternness. I am a gentle teacher, but I also know that allowing this behavior is failing them majorly.
The job is an hour commute from my house and there has been horrible turnover in the staff leaving us with three employees including me to run the whole school. I feel guilty leaving but I am only 21 and feel like I should spend these years doing something with a little less stress involved.
Can some more experienced teachers give me some advice? I’m lost.

2024.05.14 19:02 jonessyue SMB Multichannel decade MacPro6,1 double speed 2000MB/s

SMB Multichannel decade MacPro6,1 double speed 2000MB/s
Multichannel is turn-on, traffic is through two thunderbolt cables.
Last week I have been asked about: Could SMB Multichannel work with Thunderbolt Networking? Which means double transferring speed is working with two thunderbolt cables directly connected between a macOS and a qnap nas?
Yes! Definitely! :) Transferring speed could reach 2000 MB/s! SMB Multichannel could be based on tcp/ip channels, and Thunderbolt Networking is based on tcp/ip networking stack too, so SMB Multichannel over Thudnerbolt Networking should work fine.
Let us take an example by a client MacPro6,1 (2013 late) and qnap nas in my lab. Wait a second .. did we mean a decade MacPro6,1 could double transferring speed by SMB Multichannel?
Yes! Absolutely! :) As Apple said[1] macOS Big Sur 11.3 and later could support SMB Multichannel (client side), so just upgraded my MacPro6,1 to macOS Monterey 12.6.1 and .. let us fire up this old weapons system![2]
THE A-TEAM (2010) clip, Hannibal & Face
MacPro6,1 and qnap nas are directly connected with two Thunderbolt2 cables. We pick port1&2 from MacPro6,1[3], and the 1st port of each dual-port Thunderbolt2 card from qnap nas, green to green, blue to blue.
Directly connected with two Thunderbolt2 cables.
Both client side and nas side needs two ip addresses for two Thunderbolt2 ports.
On client side, MacPro6,1 has six Thunderbolt2 ports which are put into the 'Thunderbolt Bridge' by default, we would like to remove port1&2 from default 'Thunderbolt Bridge'. Then create two new bridges (i.e. virtial interfaces), 1st named 'TB_1' for port 1, 2nd named 'TB_2' for port 2, in order to assign a custom static ip address for each new bridge: 88.88.1.1/16 and 88.88.1.2/16 (88.88.1.x/16 series).
Two ip address on MacPro6,1.
On nas side, use the same idea to create two new virtual switches for two Thunderbolt2 ports, and assign a custom static ip address for each new virtual switch: 88.88.3.1/16 and 88.88.3.2/16 (88.88.3.x/16 series).
Two ip addresses on nas.
Use Finder to connect to nas ip address, e.g. Go > Connect to Server > smb://88.88.3.1 While Multichannle is turn-on, MacPro6,1 could establish two channels across two Thunderbolt2 cables, so makes it reach write 1800 MB/s and read 2000 MB/s!
macOS 'smbutil multichannel' command could see there are two channels established:
% smbutil multichannel -a -x Session: /Volumes/850 id client IF server IF state server ip port speed ======================================================================================================================== M 22 bridge1 (Ethernet) 14 13 [session active ] 88.88.3.1 445 1.0 Gb ALT 23 bridge2 (Ethernet) 15 15 [session active ] 88.88.3.2 445 1.0 Gb
macOS 'nettop' command could see throughput of each/total channles.
nettop -dn -mtcp -twired -p kernel_task -Jinterface,state,bytes_in,bytes_out
aja write:
 interface state bytes_in bytes_out kernel_task.0 306 KiB 1852 MiB tcp4 88.88.1.1:49226<->88.88.3.1:445 bridge1 Established 153 KiB 926 MiB tcp4 88.88.1.2:49227<->88.88.3.2:445 bridge2 Established 153 KiB 926 MiB
aja read:
 interface state bytes_in bytes_out kernel_task.0 2059 MiB 503 KiB tcp4 88.88.1.1:49226<->88.88.3.1:445 bridge1 Established 1029 MiB 251 KiB tcp4 88.88.1.2:49227<->88.88.3.2:445 bridge2 Established 1029 MiB 251 KiB
When Multichannel is turn-off (this is for comparison with turn-on), transferring throughput could only reach 1000 MB/s on read and write.
Multichannel is turn-off, traffic is through one single Thunderbolt2 cable.
My environment:
  • client: MacPro6,1 (2013 late), macOS Monterey 12.6.1, six built-in Thunderbolt2 ports.
  • nas: TVS-h1288X, hero 5.1.6.2734 20240414, four Thunderbolt2 ports by two dual-port Thunderbolt2 cards TB-G2DP1, Samsung SSD 850 Pro 256GB x12.
  • client & nas are directly connected with two Thunderbolt2 cables.
  • Benchmark tool is AJA System Test Lite.

2024.05.14 19:01 Acheiver-89 How AI can help increasing the conversion rate on cold e-mail and LinkedIn prospecting

Hey SaaSers!
I've been exploring some strategies that leverage AI and prospection psychology to enhance cold outreach via email and LinkedIn to get first clients for my SaaS, and I wanted to share these insights with you.
1. AI-Powered Personalization for cold outreach on e-mailing:
Tailored Messaging: Use AI tools to analyze your prospect's online presence (LinkedIn profiles, company websites, etc.). This helps in crafting personalized messages that resonate with their current needs and interests.
Optimal Timing: AI can also predict the best times to send emails or messages based on when recipients are most active, increasing the likelihood of a response.
2. Prospection Psychology Techniques:
Future Pacing: This involves painting a picture of the future for your prospects, showing them how their situation could improve with your solution. It's a powerful way to engage their imagination and emotions.
Positive Framing: Highlight the positive outcomes of engaging with your product or service rather than focusing on what they will avoid. This can increase perceived value and attractiveness.
3. Enhancing Credibility and Connection:
Social Proof: Integrate elements of social proof in your messages. Mentioning mutual connections, endorsements, or how similar businesses benefited from your service can boost credibility.
Empathy and Rapport: Use language that reflects understanding of the prospect’s challenges and aspirations. This builds trust and makes the communication more relatable.
I’ve started integrating these strategies into my outreach efforts and have noticed a significant uptick in engagement. For those of you who've tried similar approaches, what results have you seen? what tools did you used, And if you have other tips or tools to recommend, I'd love to hear about them!
Looking forward to your insights and discussions!

2024.05.14 18:59 matchacuppa Opinions - to stay / leave ?

Hello fellow redditors,
Wanting to ask your advice on this.. as i am in dilemma 😬 Sorry for the wall of text, i tried to compress it as much as possible.
I am actively job seeking atm. Am now working in a corporate design job, i was in this company a few years ago, and left 7 years ago due to toxic management. I was put on PIP at that time & left after a fews months, without any job lined up.
I went back there 1.5 years ago, as my good colleague poached me & told me that the culture is better now (good people manager & support).. bad decision on my end. 1 year in, things were really great & i was really happy to be back. Then there was change in the team, and sales were declining, so it has been a stressful time for me, as my workload doubled up within a short period of time - lots of overtime & weekend work. On top of that, they put me on a coaching plan for 8weeks. Basically i have to improve, and if not, i will be put on PIP. I have been working my ass off the past few months, there were lots of nights where i cried & felt like a zombie coming home from work. The outcome of my work have been great imo, and everyone can see that. But some feedback from management is that there are still things to be improved.
Towards the end of the coaching plan, team leader said that seems like nothing bad will happen, but its pending review from hr & upper management. I also told her that i have been working above & beyond & she acknowledges that. It is still pending now, as some people are away. Apparently my manager (my team leader’s manager) is also going thru the similar thing (she is put on PIP). She is taking a personal leave now & heard rumours we are unsure if she is coming back 😰
I have been interviewing in some companies. Most of them were unsuccessful. I had a 2nd interview last week & the decision will be made this week. My only concern is: they keep saying it is a high pressure fast paced role, as it is quite a small team, they are a serious fun company. They also need employees to be on site 5days, no flexible working. It takes me 1,5 hour to get there (one way). And the pay is lower than my current (they asked whether im willing to take paycut at 1st interview).
If my current situation is not as uncertain, i wouldn’t probably take the role if offered.. But because it is really uncertain now, in this current job market - I dont know if i should just take it when offered & if it gets too toxic then i can always look for another role ?
Thank you so much in advanced 🙏🏻
