2024.05.06 20:21 i-Get-No-Box Parking accommodations in MTL

Hello. I will be visiting Montreal in June for F1 and I'll be driving up from New York and wanted to stay in the city. I want to book accommodations but I'm not sure which choice would be the best for me. Since I'll be driving up I'll need my vehicle to go do stuff around the city but I'll Also need access to Station Berri UQAM. My problem is parking around the train station and if they allow 24 hour parking and in and out access. I can stay further away and only use the parking for the time I'm at the track. I have a friend who lives walking distance 5 minutes away from Statiom Berri UQAM but I'm also able to stay about 15 minutes away in the Parc Jarry area. If anyone has recommendations on how to approach this it's greatly appreciated. TIA

2024.04.27 06:02 Charmer2024 Relatable?

You board the metro, orange line heading towards downtown. Different groups hopping onto the metro car pre drinking and getting ready to party. A bunch of noise from all groups ensue. Grown adults making childish noises. 1st or 2nd year kids being loud af and making jokes. A bunch of girls laughing in joy. Someone punching the glass window of one of the metro cars. And the best part is, everyone else is laughing, minding their own business or shaking their heads, but it’s okay and everyone continues to do what they want. Then they all get off at Berri-UQAM and it’s quiet again.
A gorgeous Friday night in Montreal commences, ladies and gentleman. Welcome to the weekend.

2024.04.20 23:44 Tachyoff Your dream transit improvements?

Moving back to Ottawa after years in Montréal is making me think about just how much I miss the metro. I think the O-Train is actually a pretty good backbone (at least once the extension is finished construction) for a city of this size with a very spread out population but there's lots of underserved areas. What do you think would make it better?
My dream is a line running down Bank Street from Billings Bridge until the Confederation Line & then running east down Wellington/Rideau/Montreal through lowertown and vanier as far as the Montfort and maybe a terminus at Collège La Cité. Probably street running as it's ~1/4 the cost of tunneling & just removing street parking would clear up enough space for it. Additionally the citadis spirit trains used on the Confederation line are able to be run at street level so it doesn't add an additional vehicle type to the fleet & the maintenance needs that come with that. It also would work well with the proposed Gatineau LRT if they pursue the Wellington plan rather than the tunnel under Sparks.

2024.04.19 23:47 Bertandreggie Terminus

I think that Terminus was a good antagonist few episodes
But it pure disgusts me and think it was some of the most disturbing episodes - Like how they killed the people, all the bodies hanging everywhere, the weird people that attacked the community first.
Also like wtf didn’t they just go gather some berries or summing? Why you eating people man Go find some grass or a good power bar to chew on.
EDIT : I agree with what some of you are saying - I think if your that desperate you will eat anything - I think what sets these people apart is that at the start they were desperate and the people who came in and took everything deserved it because as they said they r*ped and murdered etc. I can understand then eating those people in an act of desperation and revenge as they had been starved .
It’s the after affect. Not only does their little compound disgust me with the hanging bodies etc - but they actively lure in strangers - don’t give them a choice to leave if they don’t agree with what they are doing - and don’t even grant children mercy.
Gareth - I hate you

Note: je n'ai aucune prétention scientifique.

3. Pourquoi ça n'a aucun sens

5. Conclusion

2024.04.06 05:34 curbthemeplays New Haven Wikipedia article

I just realized how wildly outdated it is.
“The city still hopes to redevelop the site of the New Haven Coliseum, which was demolished in 2007.”
“Set for construction in 2013, the "Knowledge Corridor high speed intercity passenger rail" project will cost approximately $1 billion, and the ultimate northern terminus for the project is reported to be Montreal in Canada. Train speeds between will reportedly exceed 110 miles per hour (180 km/h) and increase both cities' rail traffic exponentially.”

2024.04.03 22:25 jwthefirst Cheapest way to get to Montreal and back?

Hi all, I'll be starting a postgrad degree at uOttawa in the Fall, and my partner will be studying at McGill. I'll be making several trips to Montreal and back for a few days at a time throughout the year.
Just wanted to ask on here how you guys travel and what's the most cost-effective. Just from a bit of digging around, it looks like maybe Autobus Maheux is the cheapest way to get around - can anyone confirm that, or share how they travel?

Stack'd Deli Kitchen at SLM
Thanks to bukabukazukamuka for mentioning Stack'd at St. Lawrence Market. I visit SLM regularly, but somehow never knew about this newish spot that's focused on sandwiches. They have hot deli sandwiches, hoagies, arepas and lepinja (plus soups and sandwiches). It's a pretty big spot towards the back on the main floor.
Decided to go with a smoked meat sandwich. Machine sliced meat piled on to very fresh rye bread and schmeared with Kozalik's mustard. Pretty good. Not up there with the hand sliced, more strongly smoked specimen's from SumiLicious or Switzer's. But enjoyed it and definitely want to try their other sandwiches.

Trop long. Bixi? Je n'ai pas de compte. Le taxi? Trop cher. L'autobus?

2024.03.23 02:24 metaphysicalpackrat Benign Existence back in the day (from the Yankee Dictionary, 1963)

Night Mail
Everywhere in rural New England this is the name given the through train that rattles across the countryside during the hours of darkness with its sleeping cars, mail, express, a smoker and a coach with a few dozing lumberjacks and college boys traveling cheap, and perhaps a milk car or two on the head end. One terminus of the run may be Montreal or Fort Fairfield or Halifax or Albany, but the other is always Boston. There are a few minutes of activity under the dim lights of an up-country station platform when the night mail pulls in. A weary traveling man gladly seeks the comfort of a Pullman berth, someone gets out of the coach and looks around to see if anyone is there to meet him, express packages are tossed out onto a waiting truck and the mail sacks sail through the air, landing in the cinders by the station. Milk cans rattle, people in the sleeping cars wake up, grumble, and turn over, the conductor shouts at the station agent, the air goes off with a long stuttering sigh, the engineer cracks the throttle and the night mail gets out of town, rumbles over the bridge and gathers speed for the long grade ahead. The man on the right side of the cab pulls the whistle cord--two long and two short--for a crossing, and an extra whoop if the road has a blind turn, and folks in farmhouses for miles in every direction hear the lonesome echo over miles in every direction hear the lonesome echo over the hills, a long deep faraway musical note unlike anything else in the world. By its sound in the night they know what time it is, and where the wind is and that all is well. If they have lived in those parts for a spell, they may even know by the whistle's sound who is at the throttle that night.
Enjoyed reading this and thought the sub might enjoy. Oh to be being an old timer in some place long enough that you know who's driving the train that goes by in the night.

Welcome back, bosom friends! It's good to have you join us for the final discussion of Anne's House of Dreams, Chapters 27 through 40. (Thanks to u/Pythias and u/Amanda39 for leading the first and second discussions!)
The Marginalia post is here. You can find the schedule here.
Below is a recap of this week's chapters. I hope you enjoy the discussion below, but feel free to also add your own thoughts! Don't be just like a man or a Methodist (apologies to both groups) - instead, please mark spoilers not related to this book using the format > ! Spoiler text here !< (without any spaces between the characters themselves or between the characters and the first and last words).
Chapter Summaries:
Chapter 27 - On the Sand Bar: Anne accompanies Gilbert on his trip to the fishing cove. While wandering the sand bar and getting lost in her imagination, Anne stumbles upon Leslie, who has been nowhere to be found since Owen Ford's departure. Leslie is despondent and confesses to Anne that she has fallen in love with Owen and doesn't know how she will live without him. Anne comforts Leslie without betraying Owen's confidence, and she and Gilbert take Leslie back with them. That evening, Anne snaps at Gilbert for his musings that Leslie and Owen would have made the perfect couple, then sighs and wishes everyone could be as happy as the Blythes.
Chapter 28 - Odds and Ends: Miss Cornelia is engaged in that classic pastime of reading obituaries, which she enjoys for the humor and the poetry! She and Anne discuss Leslie's secret, which Miss Cornelia has figured out, and they decide not to reveal to Leslie that Miss Cornelia knows. Although Leslie has been able to cope, Anne makes sure to share news and letters from Owen Ford when Leslie is present. Miss Cornelia also recounts to Anne the time they had a traveling evangelist preacher in town. He harassed Leslie and turned out to be a secret Methodist (gasp!) so of course he is on Miss Cornelia's list. Anne and Gilbert spend the Christmas-New Year holidays in Avonlea and return home to find that a huge snow storm has half-buried everything. Captain Jim and Miss Cornelia have taken care of the house of dreams, though, and they are welcomed back with a fire in the hearth and freshly shoveled paths. Captain Jim has received word that his life-book will soon be published! Miss Cornelia goes on my list by saying there are too many books in the world.
Chapter 29 - Gilbert and Anne Disagree: Gilbert and Anne are both dreaming by the fire one evening when Gilbert broaches the subject of Dick Moore's condition. Gilbert believes that a new procedure, trephining (sometimes called trepanation), could possibly restore Dick Moore's health and mental faculties. Anne believes telling Leslie would be cruel because her life with Dick was so difficult when he was healthy, and because she would feel duty-bound to go into debt in pursuit of this expensive surgery. They quarrel, but soon apologize and attempt a calmer discussion. When Gilbert quotes Tennyson, Anne says it is “just like a man” to think a couplet would be a convincing argument, which makes them laugh at Anne's echoing Ms. Cornelia and it eases the tension. Gilbert's mind is made up, though, because he believes a person should tell the truth and that Leslie should be given information to make an informed decision.
Chapter 30 - Leslie Decides: Gilbert consults Captain Jim about whether to tell Leslie and, to Anne's surprise, he sides with Gilbert. Captain Jim agrees that truth and duty to do the right thing should always guide one's choices, and Anne decides not to fight the issue any longer. Gilbert informs Leslie of the procedure and returns exhausted and shocked by Leslie's fear at the news. Seeing Gilbert's pain, Anne apologizes for giving him such a hard time. When Miss Cornelia finds out and comes by to harangue them, Anne defends Gilbert and even asks that Dick himself be considered. Miss Cornelia, believing his condition to be God's judgment, cannot be swayed but vows to put her energy towards comforting Leslie rather than arguing. Leslie has decided Dick will be taken to Montreal for the procedure and will no doubt need her friends’ support. Leslie has turned cold towards the Blythes, however, and Anne fears she has lost her friend.
Chapter 31 - The Truth Makes Free: In this chapter, L. M. Montgomery auditions to write for a soap opera. Leslie and Dick head to Montreal for the dreaded procedure, after Captain Jim works out a financial plan to cover the cost. He takes out a mortgage on Leslie's farm and loans her the money, with the intention of making it a gift in his will when he dies. Captain Jim is really the best! The surgery goes as planned, according to the surgeons, and everyone waits to see the results on Dick's memory and personality. Well, hold onto your hats, ladies and gents, because this man is not Dick Moore! It turns out that Leslie has been caring for Dick's look-alike cousin George, and Dick has been DEAD for over a decade. Leslie is free! (We can only assume that in a later chapter, Dick will return from the dead and Miss Cornelia will turn out to have an evil twin who is a Methodist.)
Chapter 32 - Miss Cornelia Discusses the Affair: Miss Cornelia fills in Anne (and us) with the history of George and Dick. They are double cousins: their fathers were brothers and their mothers were twin sisters! They looked enough alike that they could play tricks on people, and they both had one blue and one hazel eye. Neither Leslie nor Captain Jim were around during the visit George made to Dick's family, so there was no reason for them to suspect anything. Now that the truth has been revealed, they ponder what will become of George. They also decide it would be a good idea to inform Owen Ford of the news!
Chapter 33 - Leslie Returns: Well, the title says it all. Dick George goes to live with his sister and Leslie comes home. Anne and Leslie talk about what a shock it has been to discover that Dick was really George. Leslie confesses that she misses the helpless man she cared for and feels there is a huge hole in her life. She also admits that she had nearly decided not to go through with the operation because she was so afraid to go back to the misery of her marriage to Dick, but seeing his childlike smile made her realize it was only right to give the man a chance at a real recovery. Anne comforts Leslie, secure in the knowledge that happier Owen-shaped times are likely to come.
Chapter 34 - The Ship O’Dreams Comes to Harbor: It seems Anne and Gilbert have been busy behind the scenes, because here we welcome a baby boy to the house of dreams! This baby is healthy and huge, at 10 pounds, and Gilbert assures Marilla he will live. Anne appears to be doing well, too, and explains to Marilla that the new baby does not replace Joy, but has his own place in the family. Anne names the baby James Matthew, after Captain Jim and her beloved departed Matthew. Miss Cornelia tells Anne that Owen Ford is coming to board with her soon, and they resolve not to tell Leslie ahead of time in case she gets scared off. (I guess Anne didn't learn that much from Gilbert's “she has a right to know” speeches.)
Chapter 35 - Politics At Four Winds: Gilbert, a conservative, has been called upon to give political speeches as campaigning wraps up for a big federal election. When the results come in, Captain Jim celebrates that his liberal party has won, while Miss Cornelia complains, but Susan wisely states that her bread bakes just as well no matter who is in charge. Anne leaves baby Jem at home with Susan for the first time, which is hard for her, and goes to visit Captain Jim. He shares his thoughts on death - he wishes for a quick passing, preferably at sunrise, and the chance to meet lost Margaret again - and Anne worries about missing him. She recites a Tennyson poem requested by Captain Jim, who marvels at the poet’s insight. Captain Jim tells her that members of the race of Joseph never forget each other, but that the memory won’t hurt.
Chapter 36 - Beauty for Ashes: Anne and Gilbert discuss news from Avonlea and realize that the children they knew are growing up, which makes them feel old. For instance, Diana’s daughter has a beau, and at 17, she is the age Anne was when she got her first proposal. George Moore has discovered that his fiancée never married anyone else, and they are planning a wedding for the fall. Susan must go stay with her sister, who has broken her leg, so Leslie will move into the house of dreams to help Anne for a few weeks. Miss Cornelia thinks this is a good plan, since Owen Ford will be coming to court Leslie soon. When Owen shows up, Anne and Leslie are talking baby talk to little Jem and he surprises them. Leslie is cold to Owen at first, and she is upset when Anne admits she knew Owen was coming. But Anne talks sense to Leslie and gets her to see that the hardships of her life are past and she can let herself enjoy the happiness to come. Leslie accepts a walk to the shore with Owen.
Chapter 37 - Miss Cornelia Makes a Startling Announcement: Miss Cornelia's announcement is startling, indeed! She is getting married to Marshall Elliott in about a month. She was apparently waiting for him to cut his hair and shave his beard. Leslie is not around to hear this because she and Owen are “raspberrying” and apparently that takes until after supper. I think we all know they are not picking that many berries. Gilbert and Anne ask if she has considered that he is stubborn (she likes a man who can stick to things) or hot-tempered (she thinks it will be fun to make him mad) or a Grit (she's just glad he's not a Methodist). They worry about losing her as a neighbor, but they will live at her house. Miss Cornelia asks Anne's fashion advice on wearing a veil with navy blue silk (it's a no). Gilbert gives Miss Cornelia his family's advice for marrying: first catch your man, then feed him well, and lastly keep an eye on him! Miss Cornelia agrees.
Chapter 38 - Red Roses: Owen and Leslie spend a quiet moment together in the garden of the house of dreams, admiring the roses and talking of love. Owen proposes and Leslie of course accepts. Later on she tells Anne that she worries all she has to offer Owen is her beauty, but Anne reassures her that she has many wonderful qualities that Owen loves about her beyond her looks. Captain Jim sits with the two happy couples around the fire and gives a pronouncement or blessing on their futures, which he knows will be happy despite any troubles that come along. Anne can tell that this feels like a final visit, and L. M. Montgomery confirms it for the reader. Susan returns from her sister's and declares it unfair that she remains single when she loves men, while Miss Cornelia can get married with no effort after criticizing men all the time.
Chapter 39 - Captain Jim Crosses the Bar: Owen Ford's book is published and arrives in September. Anne and Leslie bring Captain Jim his copy and stay for tea, and Captain Jim declares it the happiest day of his life. He is moving slower than usual, though. Early the next morning, when the lighthouse light has not been turned off, Anne and Gilbert go to check on him and find Captain Jim has passed away. He is holding his beloved life-book and smiling. Anne believes he has gotten his wish to go out as the dawn broke, and he is on his way to see lost Margaret again.
Chapter 40 - Farewell to the House of Dreams: The Blythes are outgrowing their house of dreams. Although it breaks Anne's heart, she knows Gilbert is right to buy the Morgan house in the Glen. They need more space, Gilbert needs to be closer to his patients, and Susan needs a better pantry and cellar (although Anne resents this last point when Susan won't cry with her). Luckily, Owen and Leslie will be buying the little house as a summer home! Another wound to Anne's soul is that Little Jem is growing quickly and needs to be shortened. Her sewing keeps her busy, and time flies as they pack up. Before she knows it, Anne is saying goodbye to each room of the house of dreams, and kissing the old step on her way to a new home.

2024.03.21 00:49 Mum2-4 Napanee Jane Doe

This is a local one to me, but I'd never heard of her. Given the way her body was found, I wonder if she was walking along the road and was struck by a car, or if she was dumped by someone travelling between Toronto and Ottawa/Montreal. They don't describe exactly where she was found, but 4km north of the 401 at Palace Rd, would be approximately around Vent Rd - Paulridge Berry Farm.
As usual, the older reconstruction - which apparently used her real teeth - is slightly creepy. The newer one is better.
