2024.05.14 10:48 Effective-Ad-2390 need help w/ life. feeling lost about what to do next. graduated from college fa year ago. female-24.

I graduated college a year ago now. I lived in two major cities for the span of 5 years, made great friends, and gained lots of knowledge and experience. Now, I have been living at home and working for my parents business since (it’s not terrible, I just feel like i’m in a stall period). I do have hobbies and friends here and have created a community again after being home for a year. Home is comfortable. My family is here. I love my town. But being so young I feel like I still need to explore elsewhere.
I have been searching on what to do next as working for the family business is not supposed to be something long term or full-time. I have lined up 4 different opportunities. One of which is a job on a ranch which I found on coolworks. I have been browsing on coolworks for years now dreaming of the day I had the time to run away and do it. 2 of those opportunities are to go back to school to get a masters working as grad assistant (which pays for the degree) in my “chosen” career path (kinda). One is in my home town and the other is in a completely new town. Big rural state, smaller population. The last opportunity is to get a job at my alma mater as something I want to be and is my dream in a way. Plus my good friends are there, I love the city, I want to explore more, and I feel like part of my heart is still there.
Still part of me wonders if I should drop all that and go to the damn ranch. My issues however, the position I lined up on the ranch is only for 3 months. I know thats how seasonal work, works, but I am scared I will be right back where I started when the position ends- Confused on what to do next. I asked if there was opportunity for longer and they said yes possibly, it’s just the unknown at this time in my life that bothers me. Plus, how do you ever settle down in a job like that. I love adventure, always have, just wondering if I just water the grass where it’s already green. I’m not saying I wouldn’t thrive on the ranch, I really truly think I would. It’s right up my alley. I’m just lost and have 4 forks in the road and not sure where to step next.
Can seasonal jobs like these turn into a career path? Will I ever be able to stay in one place to start a family and lay roots? Will I be able to get time off for weddings, vacations, etc?
When I ask these questions i’m thinking long term. I feel called to many places on coolworks and would love to jump around and gain and grow many skills. What if it ends up not working out for me and i’m still stuck.

Hi everyone! I'm planning to submit my application very soon. Graduate po ako from another U-belt school. Just want to know if mahirap ba maadmit sa UST grad school? I'm an average student lang kasi back in college. Right now, I have a full time job, and I'm a part-time professor naman sa alma mater ko. Nagwworry ako kasi baka I'm not qualified enough to study in a prestigious school. Thank you po in advance sa mga sasagot. 😊

2024.05.13 21:36 Top_Friendship_1007 Graduate (PSW) Visa Review

Hi everyone, I am really sorry if this is a bit off topic. I have an offer from a very good RG uni for September in Adv. Comp Sci. but this graduate visa situation is really messing with my head.
I have heard that getting jobs is really tough, but not impossible, 50% of those I know did not get sponsored and went for the PSW route to have a better chance (eventually ended up getting a job).
With the review report coming out soon, I’m trying to understand how much should this decision affect my decision to pursue it or not. Financially, it’s a big investment, but pursuing higher education is non-negotiable for me. Considering all the other countries are in the same situation, I’m horribly confused. The university itself is very good, and my course is also, one the popular ones (due to the reputable Alma Mater). Having said that, going to a different country for HE may not be of the same quality as well, because of this uni already being ranked so well worldwide (Top 35). Would really appreciate your inputs.
Also, is there a very high probability that it will be removed entirely?
Thank you for your help

2024.05.13 21:07 Existing-Duty-2327 One bad fish decontaminating the whole campus

Ok so my friend who studies in one of the most reputed universities in guwahati aka Cotton university (nothing but respect to the Alma mater) , has recently told me that one of her professors is charging money for her personal gains. She is forcefully threatening the students that is they don't pay up for some extra curricular activity which obviously she is engaging in, then she will fail them in internal assessments. She threatens the students openly and is a complete jerk to have around. To top that she teaches psychology. I can't believe the university is ignoring her doings just because she boasts of having the CM in her hands. Someone should really talk some sense into her and teach her a lesson. Imagine student having to pay 1000 inr repeatedly for something he or she doesn't even want to attend . I heard everyone in the campus is afraid of her cos of her toxic personality but isn't it the job of the authorities to not turn a deaf ear to the plight of these poor students. I have advised my friend to unanimously go to the news channels and give those news hungry reporters the whole story. If the university can't stand up to her, then maybe the country can.
P.S : sorry about the title. I dont know how to edit that. CONTAMINATING*

Should have titled this “More students from S’pore universities return to their alma mater for further studies”.
The way the title is phrased can be interpreted as those who migrated and are a part of our brain drain coming back to SG universities to study. Had to read the article to confirm what it meant.

2024.05.13 01:52 pastaasian Question about letter of recommendation

I didn't find where someone has asked this yet, but I have three letters of recommendation. I have two from my alma mater (academic advisor for one of my majors and a professor that taught me) and an employer recommendation on the way. Is that too many to submit? Should I omit the professor recommendation letter or should I go ahead and submit all three with my application? I asked for two letters from my alma mater just in case something happened.
I'm from the USA applying to the Research student/Graduate student scholarship embassy recommendation.

2024.05.13 00:01 twowheelbentley Currently, in higher education with a master's, what are some worthwhile options to pivot to?

I'm currently going into my fourth year working in higher education. I spent three years at a previous institution and am wrapping up my first year at another.
I've worked a myriad of jobs throughout my life thus far (29(M)), from working in manufacturing, a credit union, commercial fishing, and freelancing on high-end commercial film shoots. Coming out of the lockdown four years ago, I caught a break and got an opportunity to work at my alma mater, specifically in the department I graduated from. At this point in life, I had my bachelor's in film production (a mistake, I know, but no going back now) and a couple of years of experience in film production on high-end commercials (on average, these commercials have budgets in the 20k-100k range). The role at the time gave me two important things: first, it would give me tuition remission so I could pursue my master's, and second, it diversified my experience and gave me an opportunity to pivot into something worthwhile down the line. In my role, I oversaw a small team of student staff, was the sole budget manager for multiple budget lines, reduced my department's software expenses (our highest expense category) by over 35% without cutting any software that was currently being used by the department, and managed the data transfer and onboarding process of a new piece of asset tracking software I implemented for the department. At the end of these three years, I came out of this position with not only the experience but a master's in business administration (I paid 25% of the normal price, and the rest was covered by the institution I worked for).
I then took this experience and degree and got a job doing largely the same thing but at a nicer institution. The main differences include teaching one class a semester and having all of my responsibilities be on a larger scale. For the time being, this transition was a huge win; my income just about doubled, putting me now at just under 70K a year.
I really enjoy my job; by and large, there are a lot of significant benefits it provides me, but I'm all too aware that making 1-3% pay increases a year for the rest of my life is not going to afford me much. For reference, if I didn't have a partner who contributed to our household income, I could probably afford a studio apartment by myself in the city we live in and still adhere to the 50/30/20 rule. <70k/year ain't what it used to be. The problem is that there is no advancement in my position. I'm at the top of what I do. If I ever want to make more money, I will have to switch roles/companies entirely, not to mention the fact that I don't have high confidence in higher education in the long term. Higher education is an extremely saturated market, enrollment is a constant concern, and things like AI/online learning platforms like Coursera are becoming more concerning.
That leads me to my question. What are some roles outside of higher education that my skills might align well in? There's a significant strategic element to the work that I do within the context of my institution. I've managed a significant amount of procurement and deployment this year (~300k). I manage a staff of student workers. I've implemented modern asset-tracking platforms and knowledge-sharing solutions that the department had never even considered prior to me.
I know I have a skill set; I just don't know what roles would align with it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, on a side note, I'm not looking to jump ship immediately; I'm just looking to make a game plan now so that in another year or two when I've accomplished all the projects I've set out to do, I know where I'm trying to pivot to. Also, if some suggestions here require certifications, etc., it gives me time to look into that over the next year or two.

2024.05.12 20:09 yeetthatshitboy 27 [M4F] Yung sasapakin ako pag

Last month, I finished my master’s thesis and I’m now just waiting to graduate. Gym-Work lang ang routine ko since. This coming school year, I’m gonna start teaching part-time at my alma mater. Til then, I’m stuck with this routine. My gymbros, who all found SOs the past two months, are convincing me to do the same habang di pa kinakain ng grind ang weekends ko. I’ve been holding off on dating this year since I’m afraid to disrupt my comfort zone and I got burnt out going on bad dates last year. Ready na talaga. Ang kaso, pagod na sa mga nagiimplode na romantic encounters. Perhaps I’ll have better chances here? I’m done dating fellow gym rats hahaha.
About me: - 166 cm - 68 kg (14% body fat) - Not classically/Kpop idol level pogi but I get compliments about my appearance - Has glasses - Single (idk why anyone taken would post here) - Big 4 grad - Has a cat - A liberal - Team Kendrick (sorry Drizzy fans) - Pitch-black humor (c/o: Dave Chappelle, John Oliver, Jost and Che, Andrew Schulz, etc) - loves kpop, anime, manga, community, big bang theory, the boys, etc.
Aside from age (Pls be 24 above), got no preference whatsoever. I love talking politics but you don’t have to. All I ask is be transparent enough to say what’s not working as I would.
Oh yeah, sapakin mo din pala ako whenever I’m about to make a bad decision. Or pag trip mo lang.

2024.05.12 19:43 AndrewGalarneau Introducing myself: starting solo career after 35 years of steady paychecks

Left my position as food editor at The Buffalo News Dec. 1. After 25 years at my hometown paper, I started my solo career at 57.
For 23 years, I’ve taught journalism at my alma mater, University at Buffalo (ENG 213). The last session of the semester is always dedicated to exploring the question: Where can journalism go from here?
My choice was a Substack-based digital food report, bigger and better than Buffalo News bandwidth would allow. Subscribers get a restaurant review, news column, and in-depth stories focusing on the people who make the food possible, every week. News is free. $50 a year for the reviews and opinion stuff.
That’s going well enough for now.
Meanwhile, I have been trying to pitch Buffalo stories to national outlets. By pitch I mean reach contacts in the organization, ask them who’s catching what pitches, and then emailing that person directly. Not catchall email baskets.
Buffalo restaurants have two finalists for James Beard Awards - first in city history - and I can’t get a nibble.
Either I’m doing one or more things wrong, or budgets are underwater, or something. I’m disappointed but not discouraged. Before I was a food editor, I was an investigative reporter, which tends to blunt the pain of stranger rejection.
Sometimes you just have to hunker down, keep your powder dry, and save your notes. I’ve been fortunate to get a steady check to chronicle the human condition for the first part of my career. One lesson it taught me is that a good story might have to wait, but will never go to waste.
I can track a rare punk LP from its makers through 37 years and eight sets of hands to its present-day owner. This particular vinyl has passed like a talisman from owner to owner, witnessing some real shot along the way. But so what? That’s off-kilter for sure.
If you have any ideas who’s paying for weirdo narrative stuff like that in these times, please lemme know.
Also, I should mention that I can help community members with questions about journalism standards and practices. My UB class, in a university without a journalism department, is a Journalism 101 equivalent, and I started my 35-year newspaper career as a copy editor.
So stuff like how to write better headlines and decks, shape a lead, find and interview sources, do deeper-than-Google background searches, and investigative tools like FOI laws are all in my wheelhouse. Happy to tell people what I know.

I am a student and i have had only one credit instrument thus far, a niyo global card which is a FD backed secured credit card. i have had it for 1 year now and i have one late payment (totally forgot that month) and rest 11 payments were on time. My current cibil score is 730 and experian score is 775. I have just graduated last month and will be joining my job in a couple of months (expected annual income ~22LPA). i want to know a few things -
a. Will one late payment affect getting new cards, and if so, for how long?
b. What are my chances with SBI Vistara Prime, Amex Platinum Travel, and Amex MRCC given the late payment and limited credit history?
c. Should I apply for ICICI Sapphiro through the alumni program (my alma mater is eligible) if new cards are going to be an issue due to the late payment?
