The Impeachment of Philip La Follette Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections
Blind former Senator and presidential nominee Thomas D. Schall, Chairman of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic.
COMMITTEE FOR PRESERVATION OF THE REPUBLIC DEMANDS IMPEACHMENT OVER ARRESTS, Howard K. Smith, The New Orleans Times-Picayune, November 17th, 1950
PHILADELPHIA–Former Senator Thomas D. Schall and U.S. Representative Henry S. Breckinridge, Chairmen of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic, an organization striving to unite opposition to the administration for the 1952 election, issued a formal statement yesterday afternoon endorsing the proposed impeachment of President La Follette on the grounds of the “violation of citizens constitutional rights,” echoing Ben Gitlow’s prior accusation that the President has sought to build “a dictatorship of executive orders.” Centering their call on the arrests of prominent leaders of the opposition, the Committee cited:
  • The April, 1949 arrest by federal agents of Congress of Industrial Organizations President John L. Lewis, who challenged the President in a narrow 1948 primary contest, and the subsequent arrest of Tony Boyle, Lewis’s erstwhile successor and formerly Fulgencio Batista’s nominee for the vice presidency of the nation. Apprehended on related charges of racketeering, both have been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Mr. Walter Reuther, having succeeded Lewis in leadership of the CIO, has sought to fundraise $500,000 to cover the organization’s legal fees.
  • The arrest of Benjamin Gitlow, late Progressive nominee for the presidency, in September of that year prior to a speaking tour intended to vituperate President La Follette. Sentenced on charges of forgery for his time under an assumed name while presumed dead after the New American Revolution, Gitlow has a remaining eight years in prison with the possibility of parole.
  • The arrests of Cuba Governor Fulgencio Batista, who found himself a distant second to La Follette in the presidential election, Santo Domingo Governor Rafael Trujillo, and his brother Hector on charges of racketeering and bribery. All have been sentenced to over 20 years in prison, with the arrest of Trujillo in particular notable for having sparked the alienation of William R. Hearst from the President.
  • The arrest of Virginia Senator Harry F. Byrd, brother of presidential candidate Admiral Richard E. Byrd, in 1950 on charges of bribery and racketeering. Byrd has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
  • The federal investigation into New York Governor Robert Moses over the appointment of Tom Shanahan, convicted of bribery, to the New York Board of Planning, fueling the resignation of Governor Moses despite no evidence of wrongdoing on his part.
  • The arrest, on charges of embezzlement, of Senator William Lemke after his promise to campaign for the presidency against La Follette and his subsequent death, after thirty-three years in the United States Senate, on the floor of a jail cell.
FRENCH AMBASSADOR ADMITS ORDER TO ASSASSINATE BUTLER FROM LINDBERGH, Walter Winchell, The New York Daily Mirror, July 16th, 1951
WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA–Gaston Henry-Haye, French Ambassador to the United States from 1935, testified yesterday to the United States Select Committee to Investigate International Crime chaired by Senator Estes Kefauver (FL-TN) after several prior refusals to appear. The Ambassador testified under oath that he was instructed in 1937 to organize the killing of General Smedley Butler by Secretary of the Treasury Hugh S. Johnson as a means of preventing General Butler from mounting a primary challenge to President Lindbergh in 1940. The Ambassador stated that he is unaware of whether President Lindbergh himself had sanctioned the assassination, but to the sensation of the impeachers, further testified that it was President La Follette who had urged him, and others from within the Administration, to defy the subpoena.
The Ambassador’s testimony has buttressed that of Envoy Porfirio Rubirosa, his primary contact in the United States government, detailing an elaborate plot organized through General Raoul Salan involving the blackmail of Butler associate Yvonne Sadoul, whose husband Jacques, imprisoned for communist associations since the beginning of the Petain Regime, was threatened with execution unless Mrs. Sadoul would provide French agents with travel details of General Butler’s tour of Madrid. The Ambassador recounted a phone call from General Salan explaining how Jean Filiol, a member of the Petainist secret police working undercover as an agent of L’Oreal cosmetics, utilized his disguise to lure Butler in for assassination on the pretext of improved makeup for his television appearances.
President La Follette has responded by the investigation as a “witch hunt,” denouncing “McCarthyism” and citing the attacks upon economic advisor Leon Keyserling as evidence of the untrustworthiness of Speaker McCarthy. Addressing the possibility of impeachment, President La Follette stated at a press conference last Thursday that “when they go low, we will continue to aim high” as he affirmed his decision to appoint former President Lindbergh to lead the newly founded National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Senator Estes Kefauver interrogates Gaston Henry-Haye on the assassination of Smedley Butler.
United States House of Representatives Chamber, July 22nd, 1951
Stand up, impeachers!
The testimony of Ambassador Henry-Haye had left President La Follette in the crosshairs of Speaker McCarthy and, smelling blood in the water, McCarthy immediately struck for the kill. In typical fashion, the vitriolic Speaker would pillory moderates in a public statement claiming that "you cannot offer friendship to tyrants and murderers without advancing the cause of tyranny and murder” and label Father Charles Coughlin a “subversive” for a radio broadcast on the priest’s weekly program opposed to impeachment. Fearing the possibility of a parry from the executive branch, McCarthy would task Richard Nixon with leading the drafting of articles of impeachment immediately over the last weekend of June.
A conciliatory populist on his party’s left ever uncomfortable with Joseph McCarthy’s persona, Eduardo Chibas would ally with the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic to gather support for the impeachment, viewing La Follette as a tyrant. Speaking to the House in a broadcast covered live in Spanish in his native Caribbean, as Nixon and counsel Roy Cohn poured over treatises on constitutional law, Chibas would cite the arrest of Gitlow to declare that “the American people have been disgraced because power has won out over shame.” Three articles would be drafted within days for presentation to the House of Representatives, millions of Americans listening over the radio as the “voice of impeachment,” the voice of Nixon, presented them to Congress and the nation.
Article I: Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Philip F. La Follette, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has repeatedly engaged in conduct violating the constitutional rights of citizens, impairing the due and proper administration of justice and the conduct of lawful inquiries, or contravening the laws governing agencies of the executive branch and the purposes of these agencies.
Article II: Without lawful cause or excuse, President La Follette directed Executive Branch agencies, offices, and officials not to comply with those subpoenas. President La Follette thus interposed the powers of the Presidency against the lawful subpoenas of the House of Representatives, and assumed to himself functions and judgments necessary to the exercise of the “sole Power of Impeachment” vested by the Constitution in the House of Representatives.
Article III: That said President La Follette, unmindful of the high duties of his office, and of his oath of office, in the year of our Lord, 1951, at Washington in the District of Columbia, unlawfully conspired with Charles A. Lindbergh, Secretary of the Air Force, to obstruct a lawful investigation by the United States Select Committee to Investigate International Crime.
Finally, echoing from the radios of the presidentially loyal Blackshirts mulling around the capitol building to millions of kitchen tables, Nixon’s voice thundered with the impeachment’s most famous line:
Stand up, impeachers!
A few enthusiastic young representatives like Mississippi’s Rubel Phillips, New Jersey’s Millicent Fenwick, and Massachusetts’s Henry Cabot Lodge would be the first to their feet, jumping to attention within seconds as their hands clutched railings or rose in salutes to the American flag. Within seconds, dozens more would begin to stand, socialist Norman Thomas alongside libertarian Suzanne La Follette as disabled Nebraskan Bob Dole used his good arm to carry paraplegic Michigander Harry Kelly and heed Nixon’s call. Surveying the chamber, one thing was clear: impeachment had a majority. The impeachers standing in victory, the tension of the vote would dissipate for the moment against the certainty of the result, with the most popular of the articles, the first, peaking at 291 votes for and a mere 178 against.
In an attempt to conciliate the disparate factions of the opposition, the tapestry of impeachment managers would run the gamut. Leading them, naturally, would be the “voice of impeachment,” Richard Nixon, with Progressive-Federalists also contributing aging former Judge John J. Parker of North Carolina, fiery Mississipian Rubel Phillips, irascible former prosecutor Harold Stassen of Minnesota, and Linwood Holton of Virginia, while veteran old lawyers Henry S. Breckinridge and Jouette Shouse would comprise the Liberty League contingent and McCarthyite conservative Thomas H. Werdel of California and socialist New Yorker Jacob Panken would represent the divisions within the Farmer-Labor opposition itself.
For the first time in American history, the President had been impeached.
In an advertisement purchased by the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic, Richard Nixon argues the case for impeachment in the court of public opinion.
MCCARTHY RESIGNS AS SPEAKER AFTER NEW WAVE OF OPPOSITION ARRESTS, Joseph Alsop, The Saturday Evening Post, August 14th, 1951
GRAND CHUTE, WISCONSIN–Speaker of the House Joseph McCarthy has formally resigned his office after being apprehended by state police this week at his Wisconsin home, where the nation’s most impressive demagogue was charged with sodomy in connection to his frequent attendance at the White Horse Inn, a known place of rendezvous for Milwaukee homosexuals. While initially vowing to hold onto his office and resist what he has dubbed “libel,” the loss of support from California’s young Richard Nixon signaled failure in an upcoming motion to vacate and is credited with triggering his resignation. McCarthy has accused the police investigation of having been under the influence of the La Follette family, all powerful in Wisconsin, while others cite as precedent the harassment of David I. Walsh for his homosexuality by President Luce that famously destroyed the Massachusetts’ Senator’s political career. However, like Walsh, many speculate that McCarthy may seek the presidency following his expected six month prison sentence.
In addition to McCarthy, the past two weeks has seen the arrest of several other notables who favored the President’s impeachment including, on charges of accepting kickbacks, J. Parnell Thomas (F-NJ), the irascible Chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities who famously called for an end to theater funding on the grounds that such constituted presidential propaganda; on charges of payroll fraud, Ernest K. Bramblett (P-CA); and Walter E. Brehm (P-OH) on charges of fraud. The arrests, however, seem to have galvanized the opposition, and this columnist’s opinion is that an outcome of removal is nearly certain.
Turncoat counsel Roy Cohn.
The Trial of the Century?
With Joseph McCarthy behind bars, President La Follette’s allies would fundraise for their leader’s defense, shocking the public by recruiting for the defense team the former counsel to the impeachers themselves: Roy Cohn. Brought in with a paycheck rumored to be over a million dollars, Cohn’s vicious persistence would be tampered by his insistence that La Follette supporters not engage in threats, arguing that doing so would alienate moderates. Cohn would be joined by another young lawyer, the son of a major Liberty League donor who had recently turned for La Follette and a friend of Vice President Musmanno’s: Robert F. Kennedy. In another attempt to appeal across the aisle, elite lawyer Clark Clifford would lead the defense, utilizing decades worth of Washington connections. Meanwhile, the President would use intermediaries such as General Trades Union President George Meany to appeal to liberal Senators such as Hubert Humphrey, arguing that, regarding the first article, the executive orders represented the nation’s best path to universal healthcare.
As Nixon and his cadre perorated eloquently on the values of democracy, Cohn, Clifford, and Kennedy would attempt to constrain the case to the bare intricacies of legal detail, avoiding grand speeches and matters of philosophy to argue narrowly for a decision to acquit. They would find sympathy in Chief Justice Hugo Black, as the former Commandant of the Blackshirts presided over the trial with a consistent willingness to defer to the requests of the defense on matters such as the rules of evidence. Their narrow arguments would target those fundamentally uncomfortable with the nation of a presidential removal as they sought to boil the decision to one of legal nuances rather than the nature of the republic.
With the President attempting to behave above the fray and portray himself as the statesman of the national revival to win the peace, his brother Bob Jr. would reluctantly join Clarence Dill in taking the lead in attempting to secure his acquittal. As journalist Herb Klein would report, the siblings’ relationship had been plagued by a growing chasm between the siblings, with Bob feeling his brother had gone too far. Yet, Bob, through private conversations as he insisted that the listener forget he was Majority Leader of the United States Senate, that a return to normalcy would be impossible if the drastic step of presidential removal was taken. Bob would seek to obtain promises from his brother that the presidency would step back if acquitted, removing Lindbergh from power and pausing the implementation of executive orders.
Central to the Wisconsin Senator’s mission of convincing would be Vice President Michael A. Musmanno. Slated for the presidency if La Follette were to be removed, Musmanno would portray himself as twice as radical. Speaking to a crowd of supporters in New York City, the Vice President would argue that Phil had “awoken in America a renaissance, a spirit to dare and accomplish that it has not known in decades,” Musmanno would claim that he heard the voice of god while praying at Mount St. Peter Church in his native Pennsylvania, instructing him to lead “the heroic work of the Blackshirts in their purification of American soil.” Musmanno would argue that “patriotic young men” required no warrants to raid the disloyal opposition, leading Bob Jr. to privately declare the Vice President “a dangerous man” who must not be let into the presidency, even momentarily, by a verdict of removal.
As Richard Nixon’s closing arguments to implored the men of the body once labeled “the most exclusive club in the world” to “follow the bloody tracks of treason,” Bob Jr. and Dill would arrange for printed copies of Musmanno’s remarks to be spread, continuing to build the argument that a continuing La Follette presidency was the safer option for democracy even as Jacob Panken dismissively reminded the legislators-turned-jurors that the Senate could remove a vice president as well. The President would appeal to Alabama’s Jim Folsom, reminding him of the federal government’s long disassociation with Alabama affairs and promising the reconciliation of Folsom on patronage affairs.
Meanwhile, letters from Progressive National Committee Chairman Osro Cobb would promise Henry Bone and Sid McMath bipartisan support in a re-election bid to counter the opposition of the President. Thus, as the day of the decision approached, the final decision would come down to wily Massachusetts’ independent J. Michael Curley, New Mexico Liberty Leaguer Henry F. Ashurst, Alabama reformer Jim Folsom, Georgia liberal Ellis Arnall, Arkansas’s Sid McMath, Nevada Landonite Walter Baring, and the Midwestern progressive Farmer-Laborite of Hubert Humphrey. Former Postmaster General Thomas Duncan would appeal on behalf of La Follette, reminding men such as Curley and Folsom of the looming ability of the administration to pursue the ever present corruption allegations surrounding both.
The radical antics of Vice President Michael A. Musmanno would turn several Senators against impeachment.
With 66 votes, the unthinkable would be put to action, and the President of the United States removed. 29 votes had been promised against removal, 63 for, as the nation’s eyes turned to the 7 in waiting. As each awaited the call of the Senate clerk to announce their votes, their thoughts on deciding the future undoubtedly raced to the past.
29 votes for acquittal. 63 votes for removal.
Walter Baring had been implored time and time again by Alf Landon to vote for impeachment, arguing that La Follette had the destruction of the Farmer-Labor right in mind. Baring had seen his ally Lister Hill driven from power as Speaker of the House for crossing the President, and he saw his chance to strike vengeance.
29 votes for acquittal. 63 votes for removal.
Henry F. Ashurst had been a friend of the La Follettes since the 1890s. He had visited Fighting Bob and spoken on his behalf as a Liberal when Aaron Burr Houston sought to destroy his support. He had watched Phil grow up, held the toddler in his arms that now sat in the White House. Michael Musmanno, to Senator Ashurst, was an ever unknown quantity. Bob had warned him of the danger of unknown quantities, and Phil, for all that Ashurst abhorred, was known. He would defeat the President at the ballot box, but he would not defy him now.
30 votes for acquittal. 63 votes for removal.
His commanding officer in the Third Pacific War, General David Shoup, visited Sid McMath the night before the vote. Shoup had pointed with abhorrence to the to the two million Japanese civilians left dead after the atomic bombings. Shoup’s words, utterances that had once been orders in their days in the Marines, echoed in McMath’s head; “All I can say is, any man that murders two million Japanese, when it might not even be their war, is not a good man. That is not the American way.”
30 votes for acquittal. 64 votes for removal.
Ellis Arnall had gotten a very different visit, a delegation of prominent state businessmen, the very men that had funded his campaign, promising desertion of not merely himself, but the state of Georgia, with a vote for acquittal. He thought of Vice President Musmanno’s words and reassured himself that democracy could be saved.
31 votes for acquittal. 64 votes for removal.
His name is Musmanno, but we call him Curly after you.” The family’s words as they held his young namesake stuck with J. Michael Curley. The working Irish and Italians of Boston and Worcester had two heroes: Michael A. Musmanno and him. He had defied the brahmins of Boston and Harvard, worn powdered wigs to their events to mock them gaily as he rose to absolute power in the city on the back of Revolutionary era redbaiting. Curley had been in the circles of power for a half century, but even in the twilight of his life, he hated men like Phil, born with a silver spoon. His place was among the ward bosses and the machines of politics, and he distrusted the tacit offerings of favors from Thomas Duncan, the implication that the prosecutors already hot on his tail for kickbacks, fraud, and graft might reconsider with a vote for acquittal. Already in 1946 when La Follette first was elected had he served his last prison term, a matter of months then, but he knew the road was coming to an end for him. Michael Curley had never denied being corrupt, but he would take the President down with him.
31 votes for acquittal. 65 votes for removal.
Jim Folsom had never lived in a democracy. Born under the reign of Milford W. Howard, he had seen his state grow beyond his wildest dreams, never realizing that he would one day govern it. He had, after all, been rejected by the voters as the reform governor, yet his machine persisted, even as the President sought to crush it. Big Jim had never seen himself in the Governor’s chair until it happened, but Senator Jim looked across the Capitol to that glimmering White House and knew that, within the Farmer-Labor Party, he would never have a way in if he turned against their standard bearer.
32 votes for acquittal. 65 votes for removal.
Hubert Humphrey was a pharmacist, not a lawyer. He had swept into office in 1942 on the back of the Luce Administration’s antagonism towards the very Thomas Schall who now led the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic, fully holding that “the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in shadows of life, the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.” Humphrey had followed John L. Lewis in 1948, he had stood against Phil and nearly lost his career for it in 1950. Yet, the piercing arguments of Kennedy and Cohn remained alongside the nature of the impeachment. The reforms he had spent his life fighting for were finding their baptism in fire through the President’s executive orders. Bob, who had guided him when he entered the Senate and, in that friendly manner that made Bob the consummate politician his brother never was, continually checked in on him, had begged him to vote for stability, had used the forbidden word “civil war,” had pointed to the Blackshirts mulling beyond the armed security, and told him that Musmanno would be the Augustus to his brother’s Caesar.
33 votes for acquittal, 65 votes for removal.
Shouts from the gallery, journalists rushing out to announce the story as telephone and telegraph lines competed to relay the news first.
The presidency of Philip F. La Follette would live to fight another day.
The last photo of Eduardo Chibas.
The Final Radio Broadcast of Eduardo Chibas, October 27, 1951
“My words last Sunday did not have the resonance the very serious situation demanded. America needs to wake up. But my wakeup call perhaps was not strong enough.
America has a great destiny reserved in history. The happy coincidence of natural factors so favorable for a great destiny, together with the high quality of our people, awaits only the honest and capable endeavor of a team of government ready to perform its historical task. Such a team is not the present administration, corrupted to the core and disguised with new ways to cover up its shamelessness. Neither the false opposition of Batista who encourages the return of the militias with the cunning assistance of international communism; nor the scornful group of followers of Admiral Byrd. The only group of government capable of saving America is the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic with their anti-pact platform of political independence that accepts no transactions or settlements.
Come on compañeros! For economic independence, political freedom and social justice! Let's get rid of the thieves in the government!
People of America, stand up and march! People of America, wake up!
This is the final wakeup call!”
Other voices cut into the broadcast as chaos traveled over the airwaves.
"Tiene una pistola!”
“Párenlo! Estas loco?”
Millions of Americans widened their eyes as a crash ensued over the radio.
Eduardo Chibas had breathed his last.
Has American democracy?

2024.05.12 13:12 interventionalhealer Trump and 9/11? A counter theory to the rise of MAGA.

For the sake of transparency, I am not the architect of the following discoveries, and am just helping to forward their message and clean it up. Copywrite of the following work belongs to no one and everyone is not only welcome to share these findings as if they were their own, but openly encouraged to do so.
Introduction
If you think you know anything about MAGA. Trust me, you know nothing. Not even his most devout followers or haters will have considered the following. And for the sake of our democracy and way of life, I hope people read this.
This work may very well help to shift the narrative on Trump in a meaningful and foundational way, but I don't want this work exacerbate any feelings of ill will to MAGA members, for they have been prey to possibly one of the largest con jobs our world has ever seen, especially without the help of this counternarrative.
Snippet From My Thesis On MAGA
As I work on tidying up the master file with the helpful dms I got, allow me to post just the most contentious part of it below, now that it’s able to stand on its own.
MAGA didn’t begin in 2015. I argue it began in 2001 on 9/11, while also harnessing and funneling decades of anti-government resentment till many Americans would openly call for a “wrecking ball” figure to help “drain the swamp.”

A Key Fueling Factor To American Outrage- Inflation
Many elements contributed to growing American anger that would later contribute to MAGA, this is a snippet from the larger work.
Rising Cost of Living
o In 1950, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 24.1. By 2000, it had risen to 168 (a 597% increase), and by 2023, it had reached 304.7, a 1163% increase from 1950.
o Housing prices saw a drastic rise overtime, with the median home price increasing from $7,354 in 1950 to $388,700 in 2023, a staggering 5185% increase.
o While rising rent costs can contribute to overall inflation and cost of living, even the left has largely failed to address how exponentially increasing real estate prices impact the cost of living. This omission has made many other conspiracy theories seem more plausible in its wake.
o If we don’t find real solutions for real estate that also aren’t extreme, then society will feel more and more pressure to accept “unreasonable solutions” like Trump, even though he’s the last person on earth who could solve it, considering his business acumen and history.
MAGA Dynamics and Blind Devotion
In 2016, it wasn't just the left calling the MAGA movement a cult. Trump famously said, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters." Even the left failed to grasp the gravity of this statement. As someone who nearly died in a deadly cult and based on my research, I don't know of a single cult where the founder could openly commit murder without losing members. Trump didn't just believe he'd created one of the largest cults ever; he believed he'd created the most fanatical. Let's hope his followers prove him wrong by showing a willingness to criticize him, regardless of their vote.

The MAGA Question
Instead of challenging MAGA supporters on fallacious beliefs, ask them this question to see if they’re at least able to see a world where Trump isn’t a biblical King: "If Trump admitted he was behind 9/11 and used resulting insurance money and donations from hostile governments to create false “grass root” campaigns. And did it all in a way to make it seem like others committed his own atrocities. And that he intended to destroy America in every way if he got elected, would you still vote for him?"

Yet even then, getting through to a MAGA supporter inevitably refers to 9/11 “research” out there when they realize individual positions are usually fallacious. This quagmire me decide to investigate this tragedy, to see if there was a more plausible counter theory. Honestly, the more I looked the more surprised I became. Here are my findings that are but a snippet of my full thesis on MAGA.

9/11 Conspiracy Theories and MAGA
Conspiracy Theories and Credibility:
o First off, conspiracy theories should involve some effort to verify narratives, rather than just repeating claims across multiple sources that mistake themselves as evidence; like a bunch of people who repeat “bob farted” across multiple websites may see that as evidence, when in fact, it was Sean. Sorry Sean.

Early Origins of MAGA:
o Although some believe MAGA began in 2015, its roots lie as early as the 1980s with Rush Limbaugh and later became "serious" on 9/11.
o 9/11 conspiracy theories claim controlled demolitions were used, but the lack of any cellphone recordings of explosions weakens this theory.

Suspicious Factors:
o The official narrative involving chaotic jet fuel leading to a straight fall seemed questionable.
o The collapse of a third building (WTC 7), which wasn’t directly hit, fueled suspicions.
o Airline stocks were heavily shorted before the attacks, raising concerns about insider trading. Harvey Pitt, Republican SEC Chairman at the time, investigated this and claimed there was nothing amiss, but was criticized for later crimes and forced to resign.
o It’s also suspicious that in Trumps 2000 book “The America We Deserve” that he stated, “I really am convinced we’re in danger of the sort of terrorist attacks that will make the [1993] bombing of the Trade Center look like kids playing with firecrackers. No sensible analyst rejects this possibility, and plenty of them, like me, are not wondering if but when it will happen*.”*
§ Yet democrats would largely miss this point entirely and obsess over his false claim that he called for Bin Laden to be killed, when he had not. Somehow conspiracy theorists would find this ‘cool’ rather than suspicious.
CNN Fact Check Donald Trump Osama Bin Laden Book Claim

Reports and Simplified Narratives:
o FEMA's 2002 report and NIST's 2005 report provided technical explanations of the tower collapses.
o However, the Port Authority Chairman stuck to the oversimplified narrative that "jet fuel melted steel beams," even though he knew this was a half-truth, as detailed in the next section, fueling anti-government conspiracies. The question is why.

Potential Impact:
o 9/11 conspiracy theories sowed distrust in the government, which may have been one of the attackers' objectives. Anyone that heavily profited from this tragedy, and helped further those objects, should be questioned.
o The ‘Loose Change’ “documentary” pointed out suspicious parts of the story, but failed to give any clear claims as to who was purportedly behind it. It also failed to note the Twin Towers titanic design flaw that could result in a straight fall. Even the 2015 version of this film fails to mention nearly all of the known facts in this report.
o The Director of that film later states:
“I DON’T THINK WE’D HAVE PRESIDENT TRUMP IF IT WEREN’T FOR 9/11”
“9/11 created a culture of fear, of xenophobia, this sense of entitlement and everything we’ve seen. Warrantless wire-tapping, Guantanamo Bay, everything that’s happened led us to this point, we wouldn’t be here without 9/11. They want to kick out all the Mexicans and Muslims because of this culture of fear and bigotry and xenophobia that directly led to the election of fucking Donald Trump. [laughing] That’s our world now! We had Reagan before, and Governor Schwarzenegger. But President Donald Trump? It’s just weird. Everything is just weird.”
Theoutline Reflecting On Loose Change
o While the director was in the right to ask questions, he failed to ask the most obvious ones.
o However, his lead “researcher,” Jason Bermas, would turn out to be a full blown MAGA wingnut.
Patriot Jason Bermas
o Anyone that would benefit politically and financially from 9/11 should be fully investigated.

Politifact How 911 Attacks Helped Shape Modern Misinformation
It will never be possible to defeat MAGA followers “logically” with people who believed his parties rhetoric “that 9/11 was an inside job.”

I say… what if those Republican leaders were self reporting?
What if Trump followers have been rallying behind the very man responsible for its orchestration?

The Twin Towers and Larry Silverstein
Architectural Pitfalls of the Twin Towers:
· The Twin Towers had unique architectural flaws due to the excessive heavy load on their exoskeletons to allow for more floor and leasing space, which greatly contributed to their straight collapse after the 9/11 attacks. This was the first and last skyscraper made in this way.
· For anyone who said that “any other building would have fallen sideways,” you were right, though perhaps not entirely how you may have imagined. A "Coke Can" analogy shows how a similar weakened structure can result in a straight fall, contrary to conspiracy theories claiming controlled demolitions. This isn't something I'm asking you to take for granted, or to read from media sources you don’t trust. This is something you can verify on your own, in person, in real time, in reality.
· However Trump, despite being close friends with Silverstein as we’ll cover later, claimed "It wasn’t architectural defects, you know, the World Trade Center was always known as a very, very strong building” per the attached PolitiFact article.
· Supporting Article:
Engineering Experts Explain the Collapse of the Twin Towers
Politifact Donald Trumps 911 Speculation

Larry Silverstein, The Leasor Of The Twin Towers:
· Nearly went bankrupt after losing his main tenant Drexel Burnham in 1980 after he built tower 7 with him in mind.
· I don't know how many of us understand the level of desperation a situation like this can cause in someone and how many potential crimes it can easily push them towards.
· He is known for then saying, “…looking up at the twin towers and thinking, my building is huge, but it is made diminutive by the twin towers. So I said to myself, wouldn't it be incredible someday to own those?" That's not the statement of a sane person who nearly went bankrupt, and if anything, hints towards jealousy.
· He managed to secure Salomon Brothers two years later, which later paid $300 million in securities fraud penalties casting suspicion over the entities who saved Silverstein, in addition to their overall plans for the future.
· How he would become able to outbid everyone else in 2001, for the right to lease the twin towers, would become a mystery we will untangle later.

Trump and Real Estate Connections
Historical Context and Redevelopment Plans:
· A redevelopment plan commenced in the 1990s by Gov. Pataki and Mayor Giuliani, spurred a commercial revival in downtown Manhattan, making the World Trade Center prime property. Pataki would go on to criticize trump, while the other would prove to be one of this wildest, if not craziest, supporters to truly fanatical degrees.

· Tom Leppert was the CEO of Turner construction which right wing conspiracy theorists claimed helped ensure the towers would fall straight down. He also became part of Trumps transition team. While there’s no evidence of explosives being used, tampering with the exoskeleton and weaking the relatively thin central column ahead of time are theoretically plausible.
Huffpost Donald Trump Transition Team

The bidding for the World Trade Center lease involved only a few major real estate firms as allowed by the Port Authority Chairman. Below are the allowed bidders and their estimated worth at the time included:

· Donald J. Trump’s Organization:
o Worth around $1.5 billion in 1996 after multiple bankruptcies. Confirmed only by Forbes magazine in 2005.
· Tishman Speyer:
o Valued at approximately $1.8 billion in 2000, would soon face ‘tenant issues’ with many scrupulous legal claims against them.
· Gale & Wentworth:
o Worth a few million.
· Mortimer Zuckerman’s Boston Properties:
o Mortimer Zuckerman alone was worth around $2 billion.
· The Rouse Company:
o Mainly a shopping mall operator.
· Brookfield Properties:
o A Canadian firm valued at over $20 billion in 2000.
· Vornado Realty Trust:
o Worth an estimated $2-3 billion. Had the highest bid, but was unexpectedly outed by the Port Authority Chairman, paving the way for Silverstein’s win. CEO of Vornado Trust, Steven Roth would later do many deals with Trump in 2005 and beyond.
· Larry Silverstein:
o As mentioned, was nearly bankrupt in the 1980s, and was mysteriously awarded the right to lease the World Trade Center contract at $3.2 billion, twice the original asking price of 1.2 Billion. It would still be owned by the Port authority of NY and NJ, he would just own the rights to lease it.
o Port Authority Chairman, Lewis Eisenberg, made this unexplained decision, who also later became Trumps lead fundraiser in 2015.
o After putting down only $125 million, as per the contract, Silverstein would be getting back $100 million just 6 weeks after his bid and with an uncommon terrorist insurance addition. His exaggerated bid and insurance contract would also greatly inflate the amount of money he could get from an insurance claim. If the winning bid was 1.5 billion, the insurance payout would also have been much less.
o In real estate, its quite rare for a prudent investor to bid twice the asking price, as demonstrated by the other companies that backed out, of which I find no connections to Trump.
o If anyone had known about 9/11 ahead of time, like Trump claims he did, it would become drastically easier to outbid all competitors, knowing that for pennies on the dollar, you would be getting much more back.

Giuliani’s Gangster Acts
Arguably, if the above points are what they objectively appear to be, that would be a bad thing. You’d think that would be enough. However, Guliani would say “hold my beer’ to those sentiments.

1. Outdated Equipment for First Responders:
· Due to Giuliani’s inadequate leadership, first responders used old equipment that failed to warn them to evacuate the towers. Which contributed to their deaths while they searched for survivors.
NY Times Article: Giuliani’s Preparedness on 9/11
2. Obstructed Recovery Efforts:
· Giuliani delayed proper search and rescue operations for days, possibly costing lives of citizens and first responders who didn’t know they needed to leave.
· 20 Years later he would claim that some of Bidens actions were so reckless that… “It would be as if I got down to ground zero and said take out the firefighters, all you civilians see if you can get yourselves out.” Self report?
NBC News Report: Giuliani’s Role in Recovery
NY1: Giuliani Reflects on 9/11 Anniversary
3. Twin Towers Fund and Privatization:
· Giuliani privatized the Twin Towers relief funds, making them unauditable.
NY Times Article on Privatization
NY Post Article: Giuliani and Twin Towers Fund
4. Survivors Threaten To SUE Guliani For Relief Funds
· Even after privatizing the twin towers fund, Giuliani would make it incredibly difficult for the victims to receive their fair share. Requiring many of them to spend unnecessary money on advisors and consultants.
· Even with their legal pressure, he only agreed to “give the remaining 100 million to victims,” out of 170 million, if he could first put the money into the bank account of a charity in which he controlled.
· From the attached article: “But Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, said that he remained adamantly opposed to any transfer of funds to Mr. Giuliani's charity.
He also objected to Mr. Giuliani's continued control over even the $15 million in his private charity. Mr. Giuliani, he charged, gives every indication of using the Twin Towers Fund to maintain a staff of loyal supporters and to advance his political aspirations.
'The concern that politics will infiltrate the fund becomes even more apparent when one reviews the list of the mayor's former political appointees who are assuming senior staff positions or serving on the fund's board of directors,'' he wrote in a letter on Monday to Eliot L. Spitzer, the state attorney general.”
NY Times Article On Guliani Pressed To Disperse Twin Tower Funds
· However, there is no evidence of Giuliani making good on this promise.
· There are honestly no words for this. All associates of Guliani should be investigated.
5. Attempted Election Cancellation in 2001:
· Giuliani tried to cancel the 2001 election to stay mayor longer. He even considered removing term limits with Governor Pataki’s support. Similar to how Trump has “joked” about increasing his own term limits.
Business Insider: Giuliani and Pataki’s Attempt to Cancel Elections
Esquire Trump Joke Third Term
6. Motive
· In 2000, Guliani unfortunately got prostate cancer. We have to be willing to ask if this was a motive for his corrupt acts.
SurvivorNet: Giuliani’s Cancer

Silverstein’s Unscrupulous Greed
1. Initial Settlement Demands and Profit Claims:
· Despite only having been out for $25 million, Silverstein initially sought nearly $8 BILLION in insurance settlements and argued for "loss of revenue from those buildings," which is quite an uncompassionate claim considering how many lost their lives. Talk about a prime example of the working and lower classes making sacrifices while rich elites complain they didn’t profit enough from the same tragedy.
2. Rebuilding Contributions and Insurance Payout:
· Despite the fact that he only owned the leasing rights to the twin towers, ‘Silverstein Properties’ received up to $4 billion from insurance payouts, instead of the Port Authority, which would be customary as the owner.
· While it's assumed that most of that money went to rebuilding, this isn't actually known or proven. It would be different if he had a separate insurance policy that was not connected to the rebuilding of the towers, with different monies going to the Port Authority to rebuild. This was not the case.
History.com: Rebuilding of Ground Zero
· He additionally refused to return the rights of Building 1 to the Port Authority until he secured additional funds from an $8 billion state fund. Talk about heartless.
Wikipedia: Larry Silverstein
· Various entities would contribute a total of $20 billion to rebuild all six damaged or destroyed towers, including four towers leased by Silverstein and two others he hadn't. This makes it unlikely that he had to go out of pocket with his 4 Billion.
3. Estimated Net Worth:
· While earlier records of Silverstein's net worth are unavailable, aside from his near bankruptcy in 1980, he is currently estimated to be worth around $1 billion.

Silverstein’s Controversial Alignment with Trump
Larry Silverstein's connections and public persona have often been scrutinized. This scrutiny became particularly relevant in 2015 when he publicly displayed his support for Donald Trump:

The Man Who Boasted
When most people witness a tragedy, especially of this size, it takes time for their brains to comprehend what happened, it takes even more time to process it. Thus, anyone who was able to brag about their own assets hours after this tragedy on a radio show, is at least worthy of Investigation, especially if this very event helped reshape a misinformation landscape in which he would thrive as its King.
Politifact – How 911 Attacks Helped Shape Modern Misinformation

· Insensitive Boasts About Building Height:
o Trump also boasted that with the fall of the Twin Towers, his building became the tallest in Manhattan—an inaccurate and insensitive claim given the context.
Independent 9 11 Trump Tallest Building
· Early Claims and Revisions:
o Shortly after 9/11, Donald Trump claimed he saw the second plane hit the towers from his Manhattan apartment. He also made an unfounded claim that he saw thousands of Muslims in New Jersey cheering, a statement that has been widely debunked. Despite varying explanations and suggesting that he saw it on an untraceable video that was “widely covered,” these claims helped fueled significant conspiracy theories. If anything, this was a self-report.
o Snopes: Trump Claims Muslims Cheered
o FactCheck.org: Trump’s Revised 9/11 Claim
· Visit to Ground Zero:
o A week after the attacks, Trump visited Ground Zero and stated that although he was present, he wouldn’t consider himself a first responder. This attempt at humility struck many as morbidly insensitive, considering the true heroism displayed by actual first responders.
ABC News: Trump Shares New Details About Morning of 9/11

Legacy of Suspicion:
These actions paint Trump as one of the more suspicious figures post-9/11, who may have used the tragedy for personal and political gain. His connections with figures like Larry Silverstein and Lewis Eisenberg, the Port Authority chairman, hint at deep financial interests potentially influenced by the 9/11 aftermath. Meanwhile, survivors and first responders faced challenges in securing support, highlighting the disparities between their experiences and the political maneuvers at play. Again morbidly juxtaposing the struggles of the poor and working class versus elite swamp members such as Trump and his ilk.

While being, arguably, one of the more suspicious Americans of potentially “being an insider," Trump would go on to cast doubt everywhere else with his new holier than thou rhetoric and hints and claims that “it was an inside job” for the next 15 years.

What if he was speaking from personal experience.

The Deepfake Dilemma
Now in a world where Trump's followers already discount reality, the emergence of AI-generated deepfakes threatens to further distort the truth. This technology could transform legal standards of evidence, making it easy to dismiss genuine evidence against the right as fabricated, while baseless accusations against the left might be accepted as the long-awaited proof.

The Potential Escalation of MAGA Actions
Given the willingness of MAGA supporters to storm the Capitol on January 6th, bolstered by Trump's incendiary rhetoric, the potential for escalation is alarming. The advent of fabricated images and videos could present unprecedented national security threats.

Trump's Incendiary Rhetoric on January 6th
Trump's speech on January 6th was a clear incitement, as he urged his followers to "fight like hell" to "stop the steal," despite admitting DURING THE SPEECH that there was no evidence of the massive electoral fraud he claimed. As well as his lawyers laughable court “arguments.”
“...while there is no evidence to prove any wrongdoing…”
Npr.Org Read Trumps Jan 6 Speech
LawAndCrime Come On Now

This speech, coupled with his undermining of constitutional processes, underscores the risks and intentional deceit of his rhetoric. Too bad Republicans senators and our Supreme Court have either claimed he was above the law, or continue to postpone his court dates till after elections. A wild position when treason is on the table. Did that dude commit treason that claims he wants to become a dictator? I dunno, lets let him potentially get elected and then find out!

Elon Musk's Political Shift
Elon was once very much a leftist, unfortunately in more and more far left “activists” continue to attack him endlessly for not agreeing with them on their own singular issues and perspectives. To them I say congratulations, you successfully pushed the most powerful man on earth into the far right. Great job. Great job.
Elon Musk's journey from a liberal supporter to a figure embraced by the far right highlights the volatile nature of political affiliations in today's polarized environment. His actions since acquiring Twitter—such as promoting unfounded conspiracy theories and making high-profile firings—suggest a departure from his initial free speech advocacy.
Especially when considering he fired Don Lemon from his platform for an interview he found offensive. Canceling opinions you find offensive isn’t free speech, it’s literally the opposite. I’m sure many people were offended by the examples below. What about them?
Far Right Support Examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

The Need for a Critical Approach
Supporters of Trump should critically evaluate why he did not pardon the January 6th insurrectionists during his term, despite using them as political leverage now. This pattern of using allies until they are no longer useful is evident throughout his political and personal dealings.
What better example could there possibly be as to what trump truly thinks of his supporters, how sacrificial he sees them as part of his endless narratives, then his refusal and failure to pardon January 6th insurrectionists while still in office?
Of course, anyone “just on the grass” or outside the building should only get a day in jail at most, however people that barged inside the capital should naturally get much more.
And while trump refused to pardon those people before, he now calls them “hostages” and is using them as political bait to a truly wild degree. It's very likely he will make good on this promise to further embolden the narrative that “Democrats are trying to take you down and only I can save you.”
His supporters need to seriously ask, “Why didn’t he pardon us before?”
Also, remember when he claimed he would pay legal fees for supporters that were violent at his rallies, but then seemed to falter and change his mind. Much like how Amber Heard donated her money, “by pledging it.”
List of allies he was quick to discard or dump. And let's face it, all of these people have done more for him than the average MAGA supporter. The only person he cares about is himself.
Trump claims that Mike Pence, the man he vetted more than anyone else, “has gone to the dark side.”
Trump seems to have supported the chants to “Hang Mike Pense,” at least in jest? We hope? There are also no links of him condemning them. Yet admittedly this one point doesn’t have hard evidence like a recording or video as far as I know, it certainly fits his brand.
Mike Flynn, a Trump appointee, later testifies against him.
Trump admits Flynn lied on his behalf, accidentally testifying against him, but does pardon him. As long as you’re colluding with Russia you’re ok it seems?

The Future Under Trump's Influence
Trump's rhetoric about overriding constitutional norms to address what he calls "massive fraud" hints at authoritarian aspirations. His praise for dictators and divisive language further aligns with dangerous historical precedents.
Important Articles:

To predict the future lets base it on known facts:
Apparently, he will help attack our constitution like he may have with the Twin Towers.
“A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”
Stated he intended to be a Dictator on day one, but then promises it will be just for a day. Is that how that works? Or is it “Once you go Dictator you don’t go back?”
Praising dictators, referring to immigrants as vermin etc, akin to Hitlers rhetoric against “blood mixing.”
More fraudulent use of lawyers and courts that gets everyone else in trouble but him, with them arguing he's above the law. This further shows how much he will consistently use people for his own ends and then dump them when they're no longer of use.

Predicting MAGA 2024 And Beyond
Naturally there are endless possibilities of what MAGA and dictators around the world decide to do this year and into the future. I believe that the one thing that insinuates when it's time for their next evil actions is dictated by their standings in the polls or when a fellow dictator needs a little more political pressure from war torn inflated oil prices etc.
Dictators Unite
While writing my thesis, I speculated that dictators globally were uniting, finding mutual benefits in their governance and deceitful tactics. This theory is increasingly recognized as these autocrats appear to be forming a coalition, undermining peaceful unity efforts through conspiracy theories to preserve their power.
Unherd How Autocrats Unite
The True Nature of MAGA
MAGA was never genuinely about speaking truth to power or restoring America's glory. It has been an elaborate scheme funded by immense wealth, perpetuating anti-American sentiments through fabricated grassroots movements by domestic and foreign actors. This movement has primarily enriched a select few power-hungry dictators and may have been responsible for some of our most horrific moments in history in the past and acts yet to come.
Trump and MAGA
While 'MAGA' predates Trump, he conveniently stepped into a role long in the making. Despite occasional deviations from the MAGA ideology, such as promoting vaccines to emphatic boos, Trump has largely embodied its principles. The real architects of MAGA, however, are likely disillusioned with his unpredictable attacks, which contradict their broader agenda of absolute power.

Trump as a Martyr
Regardless of election outcomes, Trump is poised to claim interference. His rhetoric and the devout belief of his followers in his divine anointment could lead to his martyrdom, especially given his age and the vulnerabilities it brings. This martyrdom could solidify his legacy while serving the interests of MAGA strategists who find him increasingly burdensome even if he “wins.”

Pataki would go on to criticize trump, while the other would prove to be one of this wildest, if not craziest, supporters to truly fanatical degrees.

3. Twin Towers Fund and Privatization:
· Giuliani privatized the Twin Towers relief funds, making them unauditable.

6. Motive
· In 2000, Guliani unfortunately got prostate cancer. We have to be willing to ask if this was a motive for his corrupt acts.

· Insensitive Boasts About Building Height:
o Trump also boasted that with the fall of the Twin Towers, his building became the tallest in Manhattan—an inaccurate and insensitive claim given the context.

The real architects of MAGA, however, are likely disillusioned with his unpredictable attacks, which contradict their broader agenda of absolute power.

u/neodestiny and friends.

2. Obstructed Recovery Efforts:

· In 2000, Guliani unfortunately got prostate cancer. We have to be willing to ask if this was a motive for his corrupt acts.

Naturally there are endless possibilities of what MAGA and dictators around the world decide to do this year and into the future.

2024.05.12 02:59 GlueMunchers Can someone mark my Essay about redemption in ACC and give some feedback?

The political diatribe of “A Christmas Carol” is utilized to suggest the necessity of change withing society, and its rigid social structure, especially by those who enforce it such as the rich upper class. Dickens highlights the importance of change and especially redemption to alter the ways in which the upper class interact with their mistreated workers to improve the morality within society to minimize the suffering of the poor. This change is clearly represented through the character of Ebenezer Scrooge, who is used to convey the ideas of who the upper class currently are, what they will need to experience in order to redeem themselves, and also the moral and physical benefits not only to the working class, but also those who redeem themselves and continue to live honest and good lives.
Initially, Scrooge's character is an emblem of what the upper class are in Victorian society and modern society. Scrooge’s abhorrent description is used as a physical manifestation of the ways in which the upper class are detrimental to society, and highlights the necessity of change and redemption required for the moral betterment of society to reduce the suffering of the unfortunate working class. In stave 1, the weather is immediately described as “cold, bleak, biting weather: foggy wind.” The cold semantic field immediately creates a callous and hard atmosphere for the reader, and so can understand the “hard and sharp” heart of Scrooge, and by extension, the upper class. This may suggest why the upper class require change, as their vision is currently “foggy” like the weather to the plight of the poor, and they choose to maintain that ignorance as it was cheaper to keep the poor in these atrocious conditions. Similar to how Scrooge liked “darkness” because it was “cheap”, the upper class choose to be blind and remain unfamiliar to the pain and suffering of the poor in which they have inflicted onto them. Furthermore, The pathetic fallacy may reflect the poor working conditions of many working class citizens like Bob Cratchit, being forced to work in cold and biting conditions. Also, the adjective “bleak” may represent the future of the working class if there is no change and redemption in the upper class, being stagnant and unhopeful unless something is done. This evokes a sense of sympathy in the mainly uppemiddle class readers, and as a result, places responsibility on them to personally change their corrupt ways and choose a philanthropic path of redemption, adopting views similar to Dickens himself.
Dickens also represents how the bourgeoisie must change through Scrooge, suggesting that the upper class must actively seek and embrace redemption rather than remaining “idle” and enabling the suffering of the working class to perpetuate. During Scrooge’s interaction with the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come, he announces that he “will live in the past, the present and the future.” the declarative sentence made by Scrooge highlights his eagerness to change his own ways and acts as an example for the upper class of the way they must choose to live with certainty and strength to protect those in need and utilize their power and influence to help many poor people such as the Cratchits. Furthermore, the verb “live” suggests that they must not only know of what they must do to change the ways that society has oppressed the working class but change to the core of their values and redeem themselves so that they are also able to spread the philanthropic philosophy of Dickens and prevent the suffering of the poor. Likewise, Scrooge’s use of the “past", "present” and “future” is representative of how the upper class must reflect on their “past” mistakes of oppression, change their “present” way of thinking of the working class, and work to the “future” to change the rigid structure of society that enables the working class to suffer at the hands of many of the upper class in order for the bourgouise to truly redeem themselves.
Finally, Dickens also represents the overwhelming benefits of redemption through the final character arc of Scrooge at the end of the novella. Dickens not only suggests the positives that redemption has on others such as the Cratchits receiving a raise, but also the self-benefits that redemption of character comes with. In the last stave, Scrooge exclaims that “I am as light as a feather”. This simile suggests that his redemption has enabled him rejuvination, even if metaphorically, as he is refilled with energy juxtaposed with his past self in which “external heat and cold” had little effect on him. Furthermore, the imagery of a “feather” suggests Scrooge’s freedom as he is compared to a bird with extreme freedom as he is freed from the shackled of sin and avarice which previously withheld his character. Alternatively, the imagery of “birds” may be a biblical allusion to the dove, which may suggest Scrooge’s now improved Christian values as he has redeemed himself from his previously sinful self. This is significant as Dickens pushes the benefits of redemption and its effects that not only effect their current life by minimizing the suffering of the poor, but also their after life as they are accepted by God once again.
In conclusion, the character of Scrooge is used as a vehicle to convey many of Dickens' philanthropic ideals to his middle/upper class audience in hope of societal change for the moral betterment of society. Scrooge’s initial description and atmosphere in stave 1 is greatly contrasted with Scrooge’s personality and atmosphere within stave 5, mirroring the drastic change in which the upper class must undergo for a possiblity of change in the rigid hierarchal system in the Victorian era.

2024.05.11 21:13 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Wes Craven

Directors at the Box Office: Wes Craven
https://preview.redd.it/5jhcjegtjuzc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=71a26f361e87730152e07e12f1bc76322db0b023
Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Wes Craven's turn.
Craven earned a master's degree in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently bought a 16mm film camera and began making short movies. His friend Steve Chapin informed him of a messenger position at a New York City film production co, where his brother, future folk-rock star Harry Chapin worked. He started in the industry as a sound editor, before transitioning as a porn director. He said he made "many hardcore X-rated films" under pseudonyms. And then he transitioned into directing for the big screen.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

The Last House on the Left (1972)

"Mari, seventeen, is dying. Even for her, the worst is yet to come."
His directorial debut. The film stars Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David Hess, Fred J. Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, and Marc Sheffler. The plot follows Mari Collingwood, a teenager who is abducted, raped, and tortured by a family of violent fugitives led by Krug Stillo on her seventeenth birthday. When her parents discover what happened to her, they seek vengeance against the family, who have taken shelter at their home.
Craven, who had no money at the time, was put on the job of synchronizing dailies for Sean S. Cunningham's Together. They became friends, and Hallmark Releasing gave them $90,000 to make another film. Craven considered a hardcore film, but decided to tone it down a bit. The idea for this film came from Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring, and Craven wanted to make a film in which the violence would be shown in detail onscreen, as he felt that many popular films of the era, such as Westerns, glamorized violence and the "vigilante hero", and gave the public a misleading representation of death in the wake of the Vietnam War.
The film attracted negative media attention for its heavy graphic content, and there were calls for some theaters to drop the film. But you know, bad buzz is still buzz and that translated to a pretty good run in theaters, earning up to $3 million in its initial run. Even to this day, the film is polarizing due to its violence and themes. But Craven just made his name well known.
  • Budget: $90,000.
  • Domestic gross: $3,100,000. ($23.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $3,100,000.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

"A nice American family. They didn't want to kill. But they didn't want to die."
His second film. The film stars Susan Lanier, Michael Berryman and Dee Wallace. The film follows the Carters, a suburban family targeted by a family of cannibal savages after becoming stranded in the Nevada desert.
Craven wanted to make a non-horror, but he found that his investors only wanted films with graphic content. At the New York Public Library, Craven checked the library's forensics department, and learned of the legend of Sawney Bean - the alleged head of a 48-person Scottish clan responsible for the murder and cannibalization of more than one thousand people. He drew influences from this, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Grapes of Wrath. Craven also had to cut a lot of scenes to avoid getting an X rating.
The film once again drew negative attention for its violence. But it made over $25 million at the box office, which was an even bigger success than House. It subsequently earned a cult following.
  • Budget: $700,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,000,000. ($128.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,000,000.

Deadly Blessing (1981)

"Pray you're not blessed."
His third film. It stars Ernest Borgnine, Maren Jensen, Susan Buckner, and Sharon Stone, and tells the story of a strange figure committing murder in a contemporary community that is not far from another community that believes in ancient evil and curses.
It received negative reviews, but it was another box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,279,042. ($28.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,279,042.

Swamp Thing (1982)

"Science transformed him into a monster. Love changed him even more!"
His fourth film. Based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, it stars Louis Jourdan and Adrienne Barbeau. It tells the story of scientist Alec Holland who is transformed into the monster known as Swamp Thing through laboratory sabotage orchestrated by the evil Anton Arcane. Later, he helps a woman named Alice Cable and battles the man responsible for it all, the ruthless Arcane.
The film made $2.5 million domestically, despite mixed reviews.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $2,500,000. ($8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,500,000.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

"If Nancy doesn't wake up screaming, she won't wake up at all."
His fifth film. It stars Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Johnny Depp, and Robert Englund. The film's plot concerns a group of teenagers who are targeted by Freddy Krueger, an undead child killer who can murder people through their dreams, as retribution against their parents who burned him alive.
The film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the Los Angeles Times in the 1970s about Hmong refugees, who, after fleeing to the United States because of war and genocide in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, suffered disturbing nightmares and refused to sleep. Some of the men died in their sleep soon after. This, along with the song "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright, motivated Craven to craft a horror film focused on people dying through their sleep.
The film's villain, Freddy Krueger, is drawn from Craven's early life. One night, a young Craven saw an elderly man walking on the sidepath outside the window of his home. The man stopped to glance at a startled Craven and walked off. This served as the inspiration for Krueger. Initially, Fred Krueger was intended to be a child molester, but Craven eventually characterized him as a child murderer to avoid being accused of exploiting a spate of highly publicized child molestation cases that occurred in California around the time of the film's production. He settled on the name Freddy Krueger, which was based on a childhood bully of his.
The process of writing the film went smoothly, the real problem was finding a studio. Craven sent it to most studios, and all rejected it. The first studio to show interest was Disney, but Craven declined their offer as they wanted a more toned-down kid-friendly PG-13 flick. When Paramount and Universal also turned it down, Craven decided to go to the independent studio New Line Cinema. The studio only distributed films, but they agreed in financing the film. As they lacked the financial resources for the production, New Line had to turn to external financiers.
Despite opening in just 165 theaters, the film earned $1.2 million in its opening weekend, making it clear that it would be an immediate box office success. It eventually closed with $25 million domestically, and $57 million worldwide. It received critical acclaim, and has been referred as one of the best and most influential slashers ever made. Freddy Krueger would soon be hailed as one of the most emblematic figures of horror, and Craven quickly earned a reputation as a horror legend. But most importantly, it was the beginning of New Line Cinema as a studio, which is why it's referred as "the house that Freddy built."
The film would later spawn a franchise, although Craven wouldn't direct any of the "sequels." Why the quotation marks? We'll get to that later on.
  • Budget: $1,100,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,624,448. ($77 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $57,185,134.

The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1985)

"So you think you're lucky to be alive."
His sixth film. The sequel to The Hills Have Eyes, it stars Tamara Stafford, Kevin Spirtas, John Bloom, Michael Berryman, Penny Johnson, Janus Blythe, John Laughlin, Willard E. Pugh, Peter Frechette and Robert Houston. It follows a group of bikers who become stranded in the desert and find themselves fighting off a family of inbred cannibals who live off the land.
The film was shot on a very low budget, and it simply ended prematurely because they ran out of funds. There are no box office numbers available, but it received awful reviews.

Deadly Friend (1986)

"There's no one alive who'll play with the girl next door."
His seventh film. Based on the novel Friend by Diana Henstell, it stars Matthew Laborteaux, Kristy Swanson, Michael Sharrett, Anne Twomey, Richard Marcus, and Anne Ramsey. Its plot follows a teenage computer prodigy who implants a robot's processor into the brain of his teenage neighbor after she is pronounced brain dead; the experiment proves successful, but she swiftly begins a killing spree in their neighborhood.
Craven wanted to make a PG-rated science fiction film, with a similar tone to Starman, hoping to prove that he could make something that wasn't horror-themed. An unfinished version of the film was screened to a test audience of Craven's fanbase, and it was poorly received for its lack of violence and gore like his previous films. So WB decided to rewrite the film, adding more scenes with tons of gore. This made the final film appear tonally jumbled, and it went from easy PG to struggling to not get an X rating.
The film was poorly received for its story and inconsistent tone. It also marked a huge flop at the box office, not even hitting $10 million. Craven lost interest in the film after WB inserted their own version, and he has since disowned the film.
  • Budget: $11,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,988,731. ($25.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,988,731.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

"Don't bury me, I'm not dead!"
His eighth film. It stars Bill Pullman, and is loosely based on the life of ethnobotanist Wade Davis, recounting his experiences in Haiti investigating the story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was allegedly poisoned, buried alive, and revived with a herbal brew which produced what was called a zombie.
The film received mixed reactions, but it was a much needed box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $7,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,595,031. ($51.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,595,031.

Shocker (1989)

"No more Mr. Nice Guy."
His ninth film. It stars Michael Murphy, Peter Berg, Cami Cooper, and Mitch Pileggi, and follows a serial killer who uses electricity to come back from the dead and carry out his vengeance on the football player who turned him in to the police.
Another mixed bag for Craven, but it was still profitable.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $16,554,699. ($41.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,554,699.

The People Under the Stairs (1991)

"In every neighborhood, there's one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid."
His tenth film. It stars Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, and A. J. Langer. The plot follows a young boy and two adult robbers who become trapped in a house belonging to a neighborhood's crooked landlords after breaking in to steal their collection of gold coins as the boy learns a dark secret about them and what also lurks in their house.
After a slate of mixed performers, the film received Craven's best reviews since Elm Street. To the surprise of Universal, it was also a box office success.
  • Budget: $6,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $24,204,154. ($55.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,347,154.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

"This time, the terror doesn't stop at the screen."
His 11th film. The installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, it stars Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Miko Hughes and John Saxon. The film is not part of the same continuity as previous films, and it portrays Freddy Krueger as a fictional movie villain who invades the real world and haunts the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him.
While Craven co-wrote the franchise's third installment, Dream Warriors, he wasn't that involved with the rest of the franchise. He wanted to make a deliberately more cerebral film than recent entries to the franchise, as he considered them as being cartoonish, and not faithful to his original themes. Specifically, he wanted Freddy to resemble his original vision: far darker and less comical. To reinforce this, the character's make-up and outfit were enhanced, with one of the most prominent differences being that he now wears a long blue/black trenchcoat. In addition, the signature glove was redesigned for a more organic look, with the fingers resembling bones and having muscle textures in between.
The film received high praise, and was considered as the best film in the franchise since the original (it was Englund's favorite). But the franchise has been bleeding interest at the box office, and New Nightmare unfortunately had to suffer. It was profitable, but it became the lowest grossing film in the franchise.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $18,090,181. ($38.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,721,741.

Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

"A comic tale of horror and seduction."
His 12th film. It stars Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison, John Witherspoon, Zakes Mokae, and Joanna Cassidy. It follows a Caribbean vampire who seduces a Brooklyn police officer who has no idea that she is half-vampire.
The film had awful reviews, and despite the presence of a huge star like Eddie Murphy, it disappointed at the box office. Craven really needed a hit.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,751,736. ($40.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $34,951,736.

Scream (1996)

"Someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far."
His 13th film. It stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich and Drew Barrymore. Set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, Scream's plot follows high school student Sidney Prescott and her friends, who, on the anniversary of her mother's murder, become the targets of a costumed serial killer known as Ghostface.
As he was trying to make it in the industry, Kevin Williamson watched a Turning Point documentary about serial killer Danny Rolling which he said left him unsettled. Williamson later noticed an open window, armed himself with a knife, and called his friend for support. The pair began discussing horror characters that had resonated with them such as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. This experience prompted Williamson to start developing a concept wherein a girl is haunted by a caller.
He started writing a film titled Scary Movie, and even left an outline for possible sequels. The concept was part of an era where there was debate over the influence of cinematic violence on audience, with Williamson coming up with a brilliant line "movies don't create psychos, movies make psychos more creative." It was inspired by many 1980s slashers, even though the genre was on decline by that point. His characters were intentionally designed to be knowledgeable about these horror films and their typical elements, with the intention of creating a unique killer who was not only aware of horror film clichés but also exploited them for his own advantage.
While Williamson struggled with his previous films, this script was part of a bidding war with the studios, to the point that Oliver Stone himself wanted to direct it. Miramax (through Dimension Films) bought the script, and Williamson made some rewrites to scale back the violence. Bob Weinstein also wanted to change the name, as he believed the audiences would think the film is a comedy.
The studio considered Danny Boyle, Tom McLoughlin, Sam Raimi, Robert Rodriguez, George A. Romero, Quentin Tarantino, and Anthony Waller as prime candidates to direct the film, but they all preferred to view the film as a comedy. Wes Craven was considered, but the studio believed he couldn't direct a satire. Craven also wasn't planning on directing it, as he wanted to focus on more mainstream films to salvage his career. Craven's assistant Julie Plec (who would collaborate with Williamson on The Vampire Diaries) convinced him in helming the project. By signing, Craven decided to get back some of the gore that was missing in the previous drafts.
A huge contrast to the horror films of the era was that the film had established actors as the leads, as Craven and Williamson wanted to prove that no character was safe. Drew Barrymore had already starred in a few recognizable names, Neve Campbell was on the hit show Party of Five, Rose McGowan was known for Encino Man and The Doom Generation, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich were recognizable supporting characters, and Courteney Cox obviously was known for Friends. Vince Vaughn and Natasha Lyonne were the preferred choices for Billy and Tatum, but external problems caused them to drop out.
After viewing the dailies raw footage, the Weinsteins criticized the quality of Craven's work as "workmanlike at best", believing it lacked tension and had an inconsistent tone. The Weinsteins also disliked the mask design, and said Barrymore lacked sex appeal because of the pageboy hairstyle she had chosen. While filming the final fight, Campbell's stuntwoman accidentally stabbed Ulrich with an umbrella tip, missing the protective vest he was wearing and hitting the site of an open heart surgery Ulrich had as a child. During post-production, Harvey Weinstein decided to name the film as Scream based on the Michael and Janet Jackson song.
In a surprising move, the Weinsteins decided to release the film during the holiday season as counter-programming, offering teenagers an alternative to more traditional holiday fare. The decision was unpopular with the cast and crew, with Williamson expecting the film to fail. The film opened with $6.4 million and finishing in fourth place, leading analysts to consider the film as a bomb.
But the film just kept growing.
Buoyed by positive word of mouth, the Weinsteins increased marketing and the film managed to increase in its second and third weekends. It closed with $103 million domestically and $173 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing slasher film ever and Craven's highest grossing film ever. The film received critical acclaim for its characters and writing, and has since been deemed as one of the most influential horror films of all time. It rekindled interest in horror, resurrected Craven's career and launched the careers of Williamson and the cast.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $103,046,663. ($245.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $173,046,663.

Scream 2 (1997)

"Someone has taken their love of sequels one step too far."
His 14th film. The sequel to Scream, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jamie Kennedy, Laurie Metcalf, Jerry O'Connell, Elise Neal, Timothy Olyphant, Jada Pinkett, and Liev Schreiber. The film takes place two years after the first film and again follows the character of Sidney Prescott, along with other survivors of the Woodsboro massacre, at the fictional Windsor College in Ohio where they are targeted by a copycat killer using the guise of Ghostface.
As Williamson already had plans for sequels, the idea was for Sidney to attend college while being stalked by a copycat Ghostface killer. As filming began, Williamson's script had four killers: Derek, Hallie, Cotton Weary, and Nancy Loomis. But after Williamson transferred his script to the production, it was leaked onto the Internet in full, revealing the identity of the killers and a large amount of the involved plot. This resulted in the production continuing to film with only a partial script while Williamson conducted extensive rewrites, changing much of the film's finale, the identities of the film's killers and drastically altering the roles of other characters such as Randy Meeks and Joel. With a short deadline, Williamson couldn't fully compromise on the final script, forcing Craven to fill in the gaps himself. So the film was one of the very first cases where the Internet leaked major aspects of a film.
As the Weinsteins wanted the film ready for December, it was able to capitalize on the audience's word of mouth to the original. It opened with $32 million in its first weekend, almost five times as big as the original, and the biggest December debut. It didn't hold as great as the original due to the competition, such as Titanic, but it still made $172.3 million worldwide, almost matching the original's gross. It also received very positive reviews, and so a profitable franchise was already underway.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,363,301. ($237.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $172,363,301.

Music of the Heart (1999)

"She gave them a gift they could never imagine. They gave the system a fight it would never forget."
His 15th film. The film stars Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn, Angela Bassett, Gloria Estefan, Jane Leeves, Kieran Culkin and Jay O. Sanders. The film is a dramatization of the true story of Roberta Guaspari, who co-founded the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music and fought for music education funding in New York City public schools.
After seeing the documentary Small Wonders, Craven was inspired to make a full-length film about Guaspari. Madonna was originally signed to play the role of Guaspari, but left the project before filming began, citing "creative differences" with Craven. When she left, Madonna had already studied for many months to play the violin. Streep learned to play Bach's Concerto for 2 Violins for the film. The project marked a huge departure for Craven; it was his first and only film to be rated PG, and his only one to not be horror or thriller.
It received generally positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office. It received 2 Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song, the only Craven film to get any noms.
  • Budget: $27,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,859,394. ($27.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,936,407.

Scream 3 (2000)

"The most terrifying scream is always the last."
His 16th film. The third installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette, Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey, Scott Foley, Lance Henriksen, Matt Keeslar, Jenny McCarthy, Emily Mortimer, Deon Richmond, and Patrick Warburton. The film's story takes place one year after the previous film's events and follows Sidney Prescott, who has gone into self-imposed isolation following the events of the previous two films but is drawn to Hollywood after a new Ghostface begins killing the cast of the film within a film Stab 3.
The plans for a sequel were already underway since Williamson sold the script, although Williamson still didn't write a script yet. When the Weinsteins approached him to write the film, Williamson was already busy with many projects (including his directorial debut), and was unavailable to perform his duties. He only made a 20-page outline wherein Ghostface would return just as production on a fictional film Stab 3 would be filmed. His plan was to show the killers were part of a Stab fan club (this idea would later be adapted into his show, The Following). With Williamson not available, Ehren Kruger was tasked in writing.
Shortly before production began on the film, the Columbine High School massacre took place, and many parties began looking for reasoning behind the shooters' actions and there came an increased scrutiny on the role of the media in society, including video games and film, and the influence it could have on an audience. With production of Scream 3 not yet underway, there were considerations about whether the film should be made at that time, aware of the potential for negative attention but the studio decided to press forward, albeit with changes.
The Weinsteins demanded to scale back on the gore and emphasize its satiric humor, as well as moving the setting to Hollywood. At one point in the production, the studio went as far as demanding that the film feature no blood or on-screen violence at all, a drastic departure for the series, but Craven directly intervened. One of the aspects changed was that the killer would be revealed to be Stu Macher, having survived the original film. The Weinsteins changed it after Columbine, as they didn't want to associate violence and murder with a high school setting.
The film opened with $34.7 million, a franchise record and the biggest February debut ever. But it had weak legs, although it still made a very profitable $161.8 million worldwide. While the previous films were well-received, this film received negative reviews, who lambasted the film for becoming the very own thing it satirizes.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $89,143,175. ($178.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $161,834,276.

Cursed (2005)

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
His 17th film. It stars Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson, Jesse Eisenberg, Judy Greer, Scott Baio, Milo Ventimiglia, Shannon Elizabeth and Mýa, and follows two orphaned siblings attacked by a werewolf loose in Los Angeles.
Kevin Williamson started working on a script that followed the exploits of a New York City serial killer who discovers that his lethal tendencies are due to his lycanthrope nature. When one of his projects was scrapped, Craven decided to direct, teaming them up again for another Scream reunion. But it wasn't planned like that. Craven was making a film, Pulse, when Bob Weinstein abruptly pulled the movie from the schedule ten days before shooting and cut through all the slow lanes, wanting Craven to get to Cursed as soon as possible. Craven was reportedly not pleased so Weinstein doubled his pay in order for him to direct the film. The director deemed the script too tonally similar to his film Vampire in Brooklyn, but felt pressured by the studio, leading him to ultimately sign on.
The film started filming in January 2003, hoping to get the film released in August. In June, they only had six days left for filming. Suddenly, Dimension Films decided to put the movie on hold because top executives at the company weren't happy with the film's ending or how the special effects were progressing, specifically the look of the film's lead lupine. Rick Baker was preparing the final transformation effects when production stopped and asked Weinstein to let his team finish the work in order for it to be ready for the reshoot, but he refused. Patrick Lussier was brought in for massive rewrites, and the film didn't return to production until November. Baker was fired, and the prosthetic make-up was replaced with CGI. Skeet Ulrich filmed his scene as one of the leads, but chose to drop out following the reshoots as he disliked the new direction. It was also heavily edited to get the R rating down to PG-13. The budget was originally $35 million, yet some reports suggest it ballooned all the way to $100 million, making it one of the most expensive horror films ever.
With that budget, it was clear it was not going to be a box office success. It flopped with just $29 million worldwide, and was panned by critics. Craven himself dislikes the final product, and a director's cut was never an option because his original ending was never filmed.
  • Budget: $100,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,297,522. ($30.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $29,621,722.

Red Eye (2005)

"Fear takes flight."
His 18th film. It stars Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, and Brian Cox. The story follows a hotel manager ensnared in an assassination plot by a terrorist while aboard a red-eye flight to Miami.
The film received Craven's best reviews in years, and was a box office success, earning almost $100 million. While he is fine with people loving it, Cillian Murphy is not really fond of the film, "I love Rachel McAdams and we had fun making it but I don’t think it's a good movie. It’s a good B movie."
  • Budget: $26,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $57,891,803. ($92.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $96,258,201.

My Soul to Take (2010)

"Only one has the power to save their souls."
His 19th film. It stars Max Thieriot, Denzel Whitaker, Raul Esparza, and Shareeka Epps. It follows Adam "Bug" Hellerman, who is one of seven teenagers chosen to die following the anniversary of a serial killer's death.
This was Craven's first film in almost two decades where he would be directing, producing and writing. But that didn't pan out to a success: it was a critical and commercial dud.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,744,435. ($21.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,500,813.

Scream 4 (2011)

"New decade. New rules."
His 20th and final film. The fourth installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anthony Anderson, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Marielle Jaffe, Erik Knudsen, Mary McDonnell, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella, and Roger L. Jackson. The film takes place on the fifteenth anniversary of the original Woodsboro murders from Scream and involves Sidney Prescott returning to the town after ten years, where Ghostface once again begins killing students from Woodsboro High.
In 2010, Williamson and Craven confirmed their plans for a new film. Craven said that endless sequels, the modern spew of remakes, film studios, and directors are the butts of parodies in the film. The main characters have to figure out where the horror genre is in current days to figure out the modern events happening to and around them. This was the first film in the franchise to use CGI, with the knife's blade added in post-production.
Even though the franchise was profitable, it seemed like its glory days were long behind it by the time it hit theaters. The film disappointed in its opening weekend with just $18 million, and closed with a weak $97 million worlwide, far less than the previous films. It also received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and new characters. It was the last film directed by Craven before his death in 2015.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $38,180,928. ($53 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $97,231,420.

The Verdict

Quite inconsistent, but a very iconic figure in the horror genre. You know you made it big when your creations include Elm Street and Scream. Craven often struggled with difficult productions (you can blame the Weinsteins for that), but he still managed to make competent and scary films, even if some are better than others. Some even see critical re-appraisal as time passes; even Scream 3 and Scream 4 have their fans. We don't know what he would've done with the franchise after the fourth film, but he made it clear he was exhausted by having to film without finished scripts. Rest in Peace to a horror legend.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Clint Eastwood. I think I'll have to make two posts, given that he directed 42 films.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Ang Lee. A legendary Asian director.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 13-19 Clint Eastwood Great actor. Great director.
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
Who should be next after Lee? That's up to you. And there's a theme.
And that theme is: controversial directors. I'm talking directors who have attained a polarizing response to their films (like Zack Snyder), or the directors themselves are also controversial figures in real life (like Oliver Stone). Basically, a director that has as many fans as haters.

2024.05.10 18:35 Effective-Duck5076 My moms(48f) change in opinion has me(18f) confused

When I was younger my moms opinions were my world, due to my other family members keeping distance from me due to one reason or another, these family members include my dad.
As I grew I was told I was mature for my age so intern I was told things a child shouldn't have been told
My mom would complain to me about my dad sometimes.
Then How much more she expected from me Than my siblings
Then her boyfriends.
And then love, telling me to never fall in love, that love and marriage was stupid. Here saying bad things about love is what got to me mostly.
it was a constant thing when I was younger, to the point where I questioned every source of attention I received. No to mention that the lack of attention, cause me to practically be desperate for attention by middle school, which got me into a bad situation.
Love being complained about has made me shut it out completely, I feel like I don't know what it feels like.
She told us other things to, she said something similar to equal rights equal fights. She and my dad would say "if you hit anyone regardless of gender expect to be hit back and the other way around"
I remember hearing this and then I remember being decked in the face when I was 4 by one of my brothers and then being punching the the stomach so badly I couldn't walk another time.
I don't remember any of those times getting punished, a ten year old beat up his 4 year old sister so badly she couldn't walk over a ds game, because she wanted to play the SpongeBob game and not the barbie one.
I never initiated physical fights between my siblings, because I didn't like to, they always initiated.
Regardless, her change in opinions has me confused due to the fact that her opinions when I was younger shaped me today.
I don't really know how to feel love no matter how hard I try to feel love for anything beside my cats, it never works.
I loved the idea of marriage but force myself to speak bad about it.
I think equal rights, equal fight is a smart idea because no man should hit a woman and no woman should hit a man, depending on situation of course.
Now my mom Ideals change, from her hating love to speaking all lovey dovey about it to hating it again and now she thinks equal rights equal fight isn't a good thing, she dosnt care when a man is hit by a women but only cares when a man hits a women.
Some gose for other opinions, when It comes to politics she dosent like to see how the other side thinks, she just calls them a communist and liberal and hate the other view.
Meanwhile I like to see how the other side thinks and comes to that conclusion, sure I'll disagree but I wanna see both sides, I like to see both small detail and the bigger picture.
Overall I'm so confused. I know people have different opinions and opinions change over time, but it confuses me when the opinions that so drastically molded me change.
I'm just confused, I don't know how to think or feel.
Sorry if this is rambling

2024.05.06 01:02 TaskSilly1477 Heading back to the EMERGENCY ROOM…

Title explanation: For 2 days Mango's beard has stayed black and his whole right side is swollen. his right eye is swollen shut. Jess made an emergency vet visit for Mango. Tomorrow Mango will be dropped off to do a full blood panel.
Addie got her very first cheer shoes delivered. It is a California thing where you say yeah no and no yeah. Jess was talking with seasoned cheer moms who filled her in on what to expect. Addie needed cheer shoes. The cheer place Addie goes to doesn’t care what brand the shoes are or where they come from. The moms recommended Jess start on amazon for the beginning. Jess ordered a pair and after she ordered it one of the moms told Jess the shoes typically run really big. Addie typically wears a size 1.5. The shoes are kind of too big. The shoes are a whole size and a half big.
Addie practices her tumbling on the trampoline. Yesterday Jess took Honey to soccer because she has been having Honey practice going with Jess out and about and getting used to other people. This week everyone was stopping Jess commenting on how big Honey has gotten. Jess thinks Honey is almost fully grown. Honey is 6 months old. Honey is the best dog. Jess was comparing stories with people that still have puppies around the same time. Honey is really well behaved and doesn’t chew up everything. Everything Jess thought a puppy was Honey is not. Jess was very intense with training. Honey loves doing tricks. Alot of people told Jess to send Honey off to do puppy training. Jess doesn’t feel a need to do that. Honey listens really well, and it is really easy for Jess to teach Honey things herself. They are in the middle of their bathroom project. They officially started it yesterday. It is not going well.
Jess’s next room makeover is their guest bathroom. Jess started the makeover which is nothing compared to the kid’s room makeovers. It is still going to be pretty dramatic. They took all the cabinet fronts off to sand it down so they can be painted. Jess wants to paint them green. The theme is going to be peach themed. Jess picked what she thought was a peach color. The can looks peach, but it does not look peach on the walls. It is so pink it is almost a hot pink. Addie loves it. It is not what Jess was going for. Jess shared it on Instagram to see the opinions. Someone said that it is too Patrick from SpongeBob. A Lot of people said it is too dark. Someone said it is the color of brains. Another person said it is giving Pepto Bismol. Someone said it looks like flesh. One person said it is giving 70’s pink bathroom bestie. Another person said it is awful 1960’s grandma. Jess was not going for pink. One person said it is Jess with no sunscreen. The color needs to change. Jess also hates the light fixture. Jess is doing gold touches because she feels it will match with the peach and green colors. The light fixture isn’t the gold color Jess was picturing. Jess was picturing more of a deeper gold. Jess could look past the color, but it is also the way the light shines. It is so dark above the light fixture.
There is a twin telepathy challenge going on. Jess is going to test Kyson and Kaden. It was crazy and shocking. Jess’s favorite part was the pose.
Consistent with necrotic cellular debris. (This is the thing that gets me. When Jess has us listen in to phone conversations, she doesn’t give any context at all regarding what we are hearing. She just plunges us into the conversation with no clue as to what is going on. What is the context to this conversation? Who is talking? Who is this regarding?) They (no idea who “they” are.) are not calling it cancer or anything infectious. Infectious agents are not observed. The clinical consensus is a no. He is old enough that there may be other things going on. Blood work would tell them if there is something going on with white blood cells, red blood cells, his liver, his kidney and all that sort of thing. Their next step would be to do a blood profile on him to see how his organs are and if something weird is going on (Who is he?) (Ok it is regarding Mango. Why not tell us this at the start of the conversation?) Update on Mango. Alot happened since the last time Jess talked. They took Mango to the vet that day and the vet checked him out. They tried having Jess give Mango meds. They did the meds and finished it. They checked to see if the meds did anything, and they did not. The lump stayed the same. They went to a follow up appointment where she measured the lump. The measurements were pretty much the same. It was a little bigger on one side and a little smaller on the other. The vet decided to get a sample to see if there is anything inside the lump. Nothing infectious was seen. They sent the sample off to a lab. The lab didn’t see anything drastically problematic. They sent Mango home with a different round of meds. They give Mango the meds every other day. Mango was acting pretty normal until yesterday. Yesterday Mango was mad all day. Their beards turn black when they are upset or uncomfortable. Mango is also going through a shedding cycle. The shedding cycle could be the reason for Mango being uncomfortable. The reason why Jess called again right now is because the lump looks worse. His eye does not look normal, and that side is swollen. Jess called about all of this, and they want Mango dropped off tomorrow for an emergency room visit. The vet is booked out for weeks and the only way to get seen is for an emergency visit.
Jess’s whole for you page is recipes and in Chris’s dm’s. Jess begged Chris to make a recipe. Jess was going to make her hello fresh, but it got delivered right after Chris started making the recipe.
Jess doesn’t think she will ever get over the way the sun sets over the pool. Her backyard is so nice and inviting. However out of nowhere there is a bunch of weeds right in front of the pool. They are severely overgrown. They are trying to figure out what to do with that planter space. One thing Jess is missing and will get is a hot tub. The pool is phenomenal and gorgeous. However, in their last house they had a heated pool and a hot tub. Their current pool is not heated. Jess misses having a hot tub to sit in. Jess is either going to get an above ground hot tub or dig out the planter space and make it a hot tub. Jess is calling a pool company tomorrow to see if it is possible. Jess had thought about making the planter space a splash pad which sparked the idea of an in ground hot tub.
They are a smores loving house. It is mostly for family time because it is their thing to sit around and talk as they make smores. A Lot of the time there's bad weather. When Jess was getting stuff for the twin’s 6th grade trip she had to get a lot of camping things like a sleeping bag, duffel bag and other things. Jess saw an indoor s'mores maker. They are going to test it. Jess recommends the machine.
Jess is feeling under the weather. She doesn’t feel sick, just oddly tired. Jess is putting herself to bed because she has to be up super early tomorrow to drop off Mango between 7-8am. His vet is 45 minutes away and there will be traffic. The vet thinks Mango is on the older side so he could just be getting old. They are going to do a full blood panel.
It is 942pm. Jess has never gotten ready for bed this early in her life. She is just not feeling well.

2024.05.05 21:23 Emergency-Fox-7527 Trading - next thing to refine?

So, in season 4 we will get pretty huge improvements to itemisation and some endgame grind. That’s pretty cool, I like these changes, should be good enough for casuals and keep more invested players for longer to min-max their characters.
Speaking of min-maxing. In many many games, where loot is main way to achieve power, this loot can be traded between players. Because of that, trading is very powerful tool to increase the power of your character, thus sometimes devs put limitations or „frictions” to balance it. And now, there is D4 trading system. The system that is even worse then 25 years old game D2 and even worse then PoE, which is infamous for its tedious trading system. And I would like to describe each of them in this thread, even D3:
D2: Both buyer and seller have to be online to perform the trade.
1) Creating an instance with title like „O(ffer) IST N(eed) Shako” to which other players can join and discuss/perform trade
2) Chat channels with dozens of players, in which players can describe what they want to buy or sell and then proceed to private session to perform the trade
3) Forums, like infamous d2jsp. By creating a post, dming and then meeting up in private instance
4) Much later in d2 history, discord, 3rd party sites. Similarly as in previous point, players contact each other and meet up in private instance to perform the trade
PoE: Main characteristic of trading in PoE is that both buyer and seller has to be online to perform the trade, as in D2. But also, both players has to create a party and join the same instance (hideout most often). And one more thing, you can be whispered about trade while you are engaged in combat without possibility of returning to hideout (during boss fights, heists, delve, blight etc)
1) Creating post on a forum with item(s) for certain amount of currency, then messaging in game and inviting buyer to their party and then trading in hideout
2) Putting item to premium stash, then that item can be searched on official trade site and other players can whisper autogenerated msg. Buyer then invites that player and perform the trade as in point 1, at least in theory. However, as it works decently for high valued items, it certainly has issues when trading low-valued items, as people put these items for trade but don’t respond, because most of the times it’s a waste of time (let’s say you are in middle of high NMD and someone whispers you to buy that rare helmet for 1000 gold). Which creates another issue, when buyer spams to multiple people in several seconds for the same item in hope that one of them will respond.
3) Searching for specific items on trade site (not in game) with highly specific rules, allowing to search for that perfect item (if it exists and is put on trade)
4) Trade channel with hundreds of players, posting what you want to buy or sell, then waiting for someone to msg you in-game and perform the trade (invite to party then to hideout) 3rd party tools + discord.
D3: Infamous auction house. Probably infamous because of RMAH, which was the biggest issue with it and I won’t describe it here. However, the biggest advantage is that only buyer OR seller has to be online:
1) Players can put items on auction (36hours iirc) and highest bidder wins, if certain treshold set by seller is met. Item is automatically delivered to the winner of auction, seller gets his gold minus tax gold (15% iirc)
2) Players can put items for instant buyout. Buyer can instantly buy it and receive it, seller gets gold minux tax gold
3) Players can search for specific items, if they exist and are put on trade the players can buy them instantly
4) Limit of 10 items put on auction (for both bidding and instant buy-outs)
D4:
Here we go. Trading in D4, which in my eyes is the worst experience from which I’ve listed.
1) Global/trade chats, which can have around 25 players. Players can send msg what they want to buy or sell. Due to very small amount of people that can be in the same chat, results in basically 0 responses, thus making this method almost unusable
2) Local chat (?) - screaming in towns of what you want to buy or sell. 0 chance someone will trade that way
3)Discord - as in all cases, players post what they want to buy or sell. But here is a twist. Then, buyeseller has to send the other player his battletag, invite them to friends list, inivte them to party, switch to their world instance, meet up in same hub and perform trade
4) 3rd party site. Smth like d4trade.gg (which I really like, for what it is), but then the rest goes the same way as in point 3
As you can see, most of these have some kind of "friction" or "tediousness", obviously D3 Auction House is most approachable and easy to use, thus making it most powerful, even with its limitation of 10 items put on AH.
Allright, so why D4 trading system is so bad in my opinion? It basically doesn’t support trading in-game at all. In theory possible, but in practice, noone will care about offer in trade channel or weirdos yelling in towns. The only reasonable way to trade is by using discord or community-made trade sites. As a PoE player, I don’t mind using a trade site (even non-official, PoE’s official trade site was added much much later), BUT I can’t stand the fact that I have to invite random players to my friend list to perform a trade. It’s not like I’m gonna engage with them at any point ever, I just want to make a deal, say „TY” and move on. Number of steps to make a trade is awful, and also number of random people on my friend list is quite funny (yes I can remove them, but that’s another stupidly tedious step, why am I forced to do it?).
So, as I said earlier, trading can be very powerful. In season 2 of D4, there was a point I was sitting at 4 billion gold by selling rares and mats, I stopped because it was too tedious. Fair enough, if trading is too easy to perform, then it’s also too easy to gather max power for your char - D3 put it into extreme with RMAH, but also using and flipping items on AH was the most profitable thing to do. But, is it really the way of trading, that devs intended and designed? For me, it looks like they didn’t have time to make it smth more than just „allow players to trade” and that’s it.
Then what, you might ask. Do I want auction house? Maybe… Do I want official trade site? Perhaps…
There is also one trading system I encountered years ago, which was in MU Online. It also was far from perfect, but quite interesting to say the least. Players could open personal store, meaning, you were like a NPC with your items listed. However, that means, that you had to sit in town and wait until someone approaches you and buys smth from you. So… quite boring eh? Obviously, that wouldn’t work in D4, mainly because in MU there could be hundreds of players in one place and itemisation was very simple and streamlined (at least when I was playing it - ver 0.97d?). But what if it was altered and suited for D4 better? Maybe, players would have their trade NPC in some kind of Bazaar (looking at LE). So, that would mix instant buyouts without being able to look for perfect items, and forcing to browse items in limited amount. Pretty sure, people wouldn’t like this lol, but also, I’m not claiming it’s best solution, other than just fun idea to throw in here.
With that being said, there is one thing that could at least improve trading a lil bit.
Allow whispering people without needing to be friends with. That one little thing, would drastically improve the experience. A quick whisper „hey, it’s me, Bob, wanted that rare sword of yours”, invite to pt, go to town, trade, boom. Done. The part of inviting to pt is also.. not great, but I guess it wouldn’t be possible otherwise at all (or would it?).
Also, what I would like the most is to hear from devs about what is their stance on trading in D4? What they want trading to be? Is current trading in their eyes the way it's suppossed to be?
What’s your thoughts? Opinions? Do you care about trading? As no-lifer I do, but maybe cuz I can play like an idiot for 10hours daily. Or maybe devs already talked about trading but I missed it?

2024.05.05 13:39 HarrisonWhaddonCraig A change of plans/The new rules and trope guidelines.

After some consideration and speaking with others on the topic. I have realised how drastic and sorta foolish it was of me to decide archiving this sub and starting anew was.
In my mind I felt like I had let the sub go too far into unmoderation and wanted to restart with more specific rules and guidelines to help out. But In the end. It is much better to try and bring this sub back to a better state.
TopCharacterTropes will stay open, with the new rules and flairs from the soon to be defunct TopDesignTropes being migrated over to here.
And for those out of the loop. Here are the new flairs and guidelines info, copied from the other reddit.

Flairs

To help people find the kinds of posts they like, this sub has several flairs to help tag your posts. These include

Please remember to properly tag your posts when using these new flairs.

Trope Guidelines

To make sure this sub keeps a focus on unique tropes, these guidelines must be followed with all posts.

The rest of the rules seem rather self-explanatory/mirrors of the original sub.
Now then. Time to get into another big part of this new sub.

Moderator Recruitment

To help keep the subreddit all clean and tidy, I have opened a google form to help
https://forms.gle/mWK2uTnKyi2DsgZp8
I shall check the forum regularly and choose people who are suited for the job. Though we'll mainly be keeping the amount of moderators to four-five at best.
I belive that is everything to go over. Let's hope this new sub works well, and happy posting to you all.

Is one of these the worst-drawn issue in Legion history? We look at Legion #114 - 116 and Legionnaires #71 - 73
Just a quick retraction before we start this week's article. I said last week that we were now seeing sales worse than anything the Legion had seen before or would see after. That was somewhat hyperbolic and, in fact, the Legion will see worse sales in the future.
Man, every time I look into Legion sales figures I get a little more depressed. If only they could've taken the huge sales boost they got from being a back-up in Action Comics and kept a least half that readership with their own book... Or if maybe DC actually hired someone who could bring readers to a book...
Instead, let's go back to the dog days of the PZH Legion. Once more, into the detritus...
LSH #114
LSH #115
Can anyone explain why you would keep with the numbering on the cover when these books no longer tie into each other? Does anyone think about these things at all, or is this yet another attempt to improve sales by not having interconnected titles? Which, of course, would make no sense, but what do I know?
It's the two-part Bizarro Legion story. To bring everyone up to speed, Brainiac 5.1 brought the Bizarro technology to the 30th Century, started experimenting, and turned the Outpost and the Legionnaires onboard into Bizarro versions of the ship and the heroes.
Invisible Kid, Lightning Lad, Ferro, and Karate Kid return from a mission to discover the chaos and try to figure out what's going on.
Now for my Bizarro review:
  • What an amazingly well-written comic. Nothing about this feels derivative at all and me love the creativity.
  • What an amazingly well-drawn comic. The pictures are beautiful and artist Scott Kolins makes every character look stunning. His facial expressions, however, are pretty lackluster.
  • Me always love when Koko saves the day. There's nothing better than watching a monkey solve problems quicker than Invisible Kid, who's cursed with being a super spy and an incredibly smart scientist.
  • Having Live Wire act like a complete jerk in almost every scene was another brilliant choice. Why show any character development, or create a character that readers would care about, when you can just make him lash out at his teammates for absolutely no reason?
  • Me also loved that we finally got to see a well-written Kinetix here. After months of her written as if she has taken every downer in the galaxy, and knowing that the writers hate using her, seeing her reduced to such a joke was the perfect way to make her relevant again.
  • And is there any better surprise ending than having the Bizarro Legionnaires attack R.J. Brande? This has never been done before and the creative team has never forced Brande into a story for absolutely no reason. So refreshing!
  • Speaking of R.J. Brande, Me am so happy they placed him, naked, in a mudbath.
  • In fact, me am so happy we're moving to the second issue of this story that me am celebrating getting to read 44 pages of this Watchmen-level comic.
  • For those of you who were amazed that Invisible Kid used to be the only character who could speak Durlan, you can be even more impressed that he can speak with Koko. The monkey. Me loved those old Lassie episodes as much as everyone else, so when this happened, me was smiling from ear-to-ear:
Lyle: If I don't figure out a way to reverse the process within 24 hours, they'll be Bizarros forever!
Koko: Okok! Okok! Okok! Okok!
Lyle: What? Separate the D.N.A. strands? But how do we--
  • Me have no words for how brilliant that was. Not as brilliant as Koko, who figures out how to cure them, but brilliant enough. Me love that Bizarro-Koko is smarter than the person who has been established to be the second smartest Legionnaires. Awesome for monkeys!
  • Lyle sends a light blast through everyone's Mini-Omnicoms in their belts and suddenly we have the regular Legionnaires beside the Bizarro Legionnaires. So it's a battle against each other. Me love when nothing they write makes any sense and they just keep throwing spaghetti at the wall in their stories.
  • Another thing me love in these stories is when the writers just ignore what's going on in the story and magically transport characters from one place to another. After all, when Bizarro Brainy blows up (or does he, because Brainiac 5.1 wonders if they got away), they just leave Mars and ignore that there may be Bizarros running around and head right back to the Outpost with no explanation how or why.
  • Even better, me reached the point where me am convinced they're missing some pages. Me love when the story makes so little sense that me wonder if me got a defective copy... nope... it's just this perfectly confusing...
  • These two issues were so good, me wishes it would just keep going and going and going so me can enjoy more insanely stupid ideas and scenes... cause that's what me love the best about the Legion.
One Brainiac 5.1 point here - at what point does the constant damage and destruction that he causes outweigh any possible good? I mean, how many labs can he blow up, how many times can he risk the lives of his teammates, before the Legion figures that having Lyle handle the science is better? I guess it would be okay if they actually showed Brainy deliver something really, genuinely useful...
LSH #116
I'm gonna stick with the Legion since Legionnaires has a three-part story. Or just to get this over with.
We continue getting Thunder, and her long-running subplot of collecting pieces of her planet to bring them together and make it whole again (which makes so little sense that it's insane) shoved down our throats so I guess it's not a surprise that we get more of this nonsense.
Before I start this review, I want to personally apologize to any artist I've criticized during my time writing these rereads on reddit. Let's take a look at this first page and talk about just how horrible it is. Keron Grant is the guest artist and wow... this is shockingly bad! Like, I honestly can't think of a book that looks worse. Ever. I honestly can't think of a worse looking comic book. I'm sure there's one out there. But I even want to apologize to Rob Liefeld...
https://preview.redd.it/d4i7mgsg6gyc1.png?width=599&format=png&auto=webp&s=d464752fd149c571daffb0da59c45c6ba4853bc7
Let's talk about this first page. First, anatomy:
  • Thunder's torso cannot be connected to her legs
  • Speaking of her legs, I'm fairly certain she's been skipping leg day for a while
  • Green guy in the background doesn't actually have legs, just stumps
  • Green guy in the foreground has legs, and a bum, that aren't actually connected to his waist... it's like that belt is holding onto two separate things
Second, the roll call:
  • Thunder looks cross-eyed and drunk
  • Brainiac 5.1 now has a receding hairline
  • Did someone tell the artist to draw up most of their noses?
  • Did the artist not know that Spark and Live Wire are twins and should have at least one similar feature?
  • Did Invisible Kid lose his skull?
This is a bad book from start to finish and the art makes it painful to read. Quick recap - some bad guy from Rimbor wants all of the rock Thunder's trying to find. He captures her and Sensor and takes them back to his base. She escapes by saying her magic words "Captain Marvel" and ends up back home in the future. But she knows she has to save Sensor and get back. Sensor, meanwhile, is going to be vivisected by scientists there. Oh, and the Legion come to help but don't do much. And this garbage is continued next issue... time to pray Grant's not back...
Legionnaires #71
Legionnaires #72
Legionnaires #73
With all that excitement in space, let's head to Earth (and other places) for more chaos.
We start in Japan, where Cosmic Boy isn't really having the best of reunions with his family. He's obsessed with figuring out where his former manager, Alux Cuspin, is. Last issue, he tried to get revenge by hiring Domain, a contract killer, to take out the Legionnaire. We know he's working as a dishwasher in Rio, but Rokk doesn't.
On that note, I guess Star Trek has kinda ruined me for my view of the future, but I really have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that people would be employed as dishwashers in the 30th Century. I mean, don't they have robots for that? Or self-cleaning utensils? Or hologram plates that disappear after you've finished eating? I know that I've harped on this before but this book just doesn't feel like it's in the future. Fantastic Four comics have more impressive tech. And the writers don't seem to have spent even one moment thinking about what the future would look like. Just bigger machines and aliens. That's it.
We then get introduced to four characters who are going to become important once Dragonmage screws up. We meet different aliens (and a Sun Boy), who have different elemental connections (fire, water, earth, air) and are struggling with their current lives.
We also go to Dryad, which, I gotta be honest, just fills me with dread. Blok was always one of my favorites and I really don't want to see either creative team wreck him this close to their cancellation.
So, surprise surprise, Dragonmage, in a quest for power (he's taken the Kinetix role), blasts these rocks that contain mystical, elemental energy. Four bolts take off through the cosmos, looking for hosts of their power. They fly off searching for the four beings we met earlier for absolutely no reason. They don't even try to connect them, or show why the elemental magic would want them. It's so completely random that if you think about it for even a moment, everything falls apart... which is a great way to describe most Legion stories these days.
We wrap up the Cuspin subplot in four pages as Chameleon arrests him and hands him over the Shvaughn Erin.
Then all technology stops working as the magic hits Earth.. and Dryad... and Gil'dan... and four beings are possessed with the power. Poor Dirk Morgna - I swear all he does in the PZH Legion is stand around and then get blasted. Could he actually accomplish anything for himself?
We get another Cosmic Boy saves the day moment (they're really going overboard on this) and then Lady Mysa shows up at Legion HQ to explain what Dragonmage did and to ask for help.
Everything keeps escalating and Dirk's sun powers are going out of control in Japan - and only Cosmic Boy, Umbra, and Kid Quantum are there to help.
To the second part we go and, because we have pages to waste, we spend the first issue recapping Dirk Morgna's life... why?? By 1999, the only people reading this book are longtime fans. They really don't need to keep writing these books like it's 1982 Marvel.
Oh, and to make things slightly cringey, they name the fire elemental that's possessed Dirk: Phy'r. Ugh...
Element Lad and Monstress have joined the fight as the five Legionnaires try to stop Dirk from destroying more of Tokyo. Saturn Girl, Gates, and Lady Mysa arrive as well and the magician realizes that teamwork will solve the problem.
Wow - so glad that a team of super-heroes, literally built on teamwork, got that suggestion. Why is Mysa here?
To planet Swizzar we go, where a butterfly-looking being named Flutter is possessed by the wind elemental named A'rie. I swear they're not even trying with these names.
On Dryad, Brika is possessed by RRox, the earth elemental. And she starts attacking the colonizers who want to take over her world. So she's good, right?
And on Gil'dan, Ebb is taken over by the unnamed water elemental (did the random bad name generator not work here or did no one notice?).
All three start killing everyone around them, suck all the air and water off their planets or, in Rrox's case, they destroy the entire planet of Dryad. I knew this wasn't going to be good.
Back to Earth, where Dirk's powers are getting stronger and stronger and he ends up sucking lava up from the core. He, like the other three, blasts off into space and heads somewhere.
Everywhere the four fly by, they steal the energy of the planet and wreak havoc, whether it's Colu or Takron-Galtos.
And where are they headed? The planet where Mordru was defeated and imprisoned. This isn't good, is it?
To the third part of this kinda well done and actually interesting story... such a dramatic shift from the other book.
We start off with the elementals arriving at the planet and killing random guards. Oh, and they didn't even bother giving Ebb an elemental name. So sad for him.
The Legionnaires are rushing after them, trying to get there in their ship as quickly as possible. If I was a jerk, I'd mention how traveling through space is slow when they need it to be and fast when they don't want to think about it, but I'll let that go.
We get a nice little subplot as Star Boy realizes that his gravity-controlling powers are working again. He's also laying into Dragonmage, which is well-deserved. By the way, would Dragonmage be punished by the U.P. for causing all this death and destruction? I mean, it could be argued that it's akin to manslaughter, right? He's directly responsible for the deaths of three planets.
As the elementals wait for Rrox, the Legion has called in the rest of the troops who aren't Bizarro versions of themselves so Ultra Boy, Apparition, and Chameleon are heading to the planet too.
Gates and Monstress lead the attack, hitting A'rie before Mysa can encase her in the same crystal prison Mordru is in. Then they take out Ebb as well. Saturn Girl tries to get through to Dirk mentally, and it looks like he's getting back into control, when Rrox shows up and sends the Legion for a loop.
So they didn't see her coming? A big mountain flying through space?
They start attacking Rrox, who breaks Ultra Boy's arm because he, once again, doesn't know how to use his powers at all. I mean, they're not even trying to make him competent, are they? Element Lad converts the stargate around Rrox's waist (don't ask) into a bomb and blows her up.
I guess the Legion is no longer against killing, are they?
The battles continue and Mordru starts stirring. Dragonmage and Star Boy show up through what I'm guessing is a mystic portal and join the fight.
Star Boy and Mysa work together as he anchors himself to the ground and she starts separating the elemental from the being possessed. I have absolutely no idea why she needed Star Boy for this, but the writers stopped caring about anything making sense a long, long time ago, so why should I? In the "what a dumb subplot" category, this whole moment was referenced by Dreamer, who claimed that Star Boy would save his team. But all he did was stand there. Once again, is no one actually paying attention to anything?
The beings start remembering who they were before the elementals and Brika isn't dead, but horribly sad and tormented at the fact that she destroyed her entire planet. So that's better...?? It's enough for her to join with the Legion and fight the other beings, who don't want to give up their powers.
Dragonmage swears that he'll stop them and he starts a spell to capture them all in a big bubble. Mysa helps, which makes sense. Kid Quantum and Star Boy help too, which makes no sense.
The bubble collapses upon itself, trapping the elementals inside... and Dragonmage... so I guess he's dead. Or trapped. Or just gone. But Mordru's still asleep, so that's good.
No, he's still alive, but badly hurt. As are the host bodies of the four possessed by the elementals. Find out next issue who lives and who dies... of course, do we really care about any of them? I mean, honestly?
The scary thing is that as much as part of this story made no sense and things were jumping around, this Legionnaires tale was so much better than anything in the Legion book that it's unfair I'm doing these reviews together. It almost feels like I'm getting whiplash by the drastic change in quality.
Also, I'm probably overly positive about the Legionnaires because it's a competent, adequately done comic. It's not great. There have been far, far better stories by this creative team. But it's not the crap the other book is publishing right now.
Our next Legionnaire in the spotlight... Lar Gand / Mon-El / Valor / M'Onel!!!
You get a cookie if you remember these comics strips that appeared in DC comics.

This is a tough one to write, not because I don't like this character (which I do), but because I don't want this to sound like an old man yelling at clouds about how the good old days were so much better than anything else.
Mon-El could've been the most boring, redundant super-hero in the Legion. He was certainly set up that way. An almost clone of Superboy, with the exact same powers and a costume that is fairly monotonous, Lar Gand could've been a character ignored by most because, let's be honest, everything he brought to the table had already been seen and done before. And this is even truer with both Superboy and Supergirl on the team. When you give a character the name Bob Cobb, you know you're not even trying to make them interesting.
Instead, the writers leaned into four things that really established him as a character:
  • Lead poisoning
  • Relationship with Tasmia / friendships with Tinya and Jo
  • Fear of the Phantom Zone / the torment of 1,000 years of solitude
  • Love for exploration
Now we had fertile ground to cover and ways to weaken/strengthen Mon-El that made him very, very different from the other Els. Some of the best Legion stories revolve around these four ideas and turned Mon-El into one of the most popular characters in the Legion.
So, of course, every time there was a reboot or rethinking of the character, they pretty much tossed everything out except for him being an explorer. Lead was never a problem, Tasmia just wanted to date him but they never got further than that, and he had no other friends.
Also, it seems like every time he shows up in DC continuity, it's just as a Superman fill in and not really his own person. Heck, he even adopted a costume that was similar to Superman's. Why can't they try to make him even slightly different?
Such a waste.
It's funny that I actually consider the Tasmia/Lar relationship more important than almost any other and one that should be a keystone for the series. It allowed the writers to grow and develop both characters in such an epic way that they just feel 'right' when they're together, if that makes any sense.
The other thing that always amazes me is that Mon-El (sorry, Valor) has the longest lasting solo series of any Legionnaire. The competition isn't that strong, and the book didn't even last two years, but it's still better than Karate Kid's series... which, admittedly, isn't saying that much, is it?
What do you think of Mon-El?
On a housekeeping note, next week's column is probably going to arrive a day earlier than usual so I can enjoy a weekend trip. Fingers crossed I get through the next set of 6 comics without putting my head through a wall.

2024.05.03 19:38 Expert_Individual185 The Self Insert Fanfic Arc

They introduce a new character, one who has been a fan of the show for years. Despite the changing nature of the channel, ahe’s remained loyal since the beginning. She’s formed a parasocial bond with each character, and for some reason had a crush on Bob (It’s really funny, ok). But when the characters felt pain, she did too. So she gets herself hired by Luke and lies on her Resume to put herself on the Writer’s team, and inserts herself into the show.
She then starts to make changes. Character designs will revert back to their original form, or receive strange, drastic changes. She then goes mad with Power, reviving characters such as Desti or Axol, retconning Lore for no reason, and forces her ships onto the characters. but She uses her writing powers to assemble a force to keep the others from finding out about her control. The remaining heroes manage to erase the scripts, which reverts all of her changes.
She throws a hissy fit and creates an illusion of her perfect world. For some, It’s a world where all of their struggles never happened and they’re perfectly happy, such as Melony and Axol being married and Raising Axol Jr. Older forgotten characters are made Relevant again. But for others, specifically the ones she doesn’t care about or dislikes, they are no longer in the show, not allowed to be in it again and living normal, mundane lives
They get into a battle over whether to accept this new universe or reject it. The Ones who Benefit Vs The ones who Despair. Eventually, the ones who Benefit realize that if their struggles never happened, they will not be the same people as they are now.
Eventually, she makes herself into a godlike being, claiming to be more powerful than any evil they have ever faced. They use enough meme energy to manipulate real life and has Luke fire her, causing her writing powers to be removed. With her powers lost, her character as well as her perfect universe disappears along with it.
Yes, she was inspired by Takuto Maruki. But I have a problem. What should her name be? It should definitely sound like an edgy, self insert OC name.

2024.04.29 22:01 Wolven91 Drifting - Part 12

“Drop zone approaching. Get ready.” Called the dropship’s pilot from far up in a cockpit somewhere. Casper’s body was encased in his own pilot casket and felt none of the violent shaking and sudden drops as the craft rapidly dropped into the atmosphere, heating its belly until it glowed a brilliant orange.
However, the rig that the young man was piloting, still shook and rattled in its clamps. Thanks to the fearless sensations of piloting such a sturdy piece of machinery, unlike his body that was fallible; he never felt worry or fear from these worrying judders. The optics of the mech were already online and scanning the bay carefully. He’d zoomed in on the only other creature, a geckin, that was in sight too many times to count already. Casper shut off the optics as the geckin, unaware it was being observed, picked its nose before happily consuming the prize it had retrieved.
[Grim.] Casper sent, mildly annoyed that emotions never came across in the text-like messages the two pilots could exchange without speaking.
{What?} Qik returned, in a separate craft that likewise, was dropping into the combat area.
[Our benefactors. Just watched one put their whole ass hand up one nostril.]
{Yummy. Looked like your breakfast, didn’t it?}
The nutrient slop, or ‘slurry’ as they oh so appetisingly called it, was what Casper had to eat both in the morning and at night if he wanted to maintain his already drastically lowered weight. It had the consistency of the word ‘goop’ and, now it had been pointed out to him, the colour of geckin snot.
[I am literally never going to eat again.]
Casper didn’t get a reply, but clicked his optics with the feeling that Qik was laughing or grinning in her own rig at his words. They remained in silence for a minute more before the geckin Casper was watching touched a hand to his own ear before making his way to the exit.
“Inbound! Ten seconds!”
The digging geckin fled the room as moments later the floor beneath Casper’s feet opened and a roaring wind blasted up and into the space. The young pilot couldn’t tilt his body down, so most of his view was obscured by his own body, but he could see a dark, grey landscape far below what would be his dangling feet.
{I’m dropping after you, my original LZ is no good. Get eyes on the operation area, don’t approach yet.}
[Yes ma’am.]
{You’re going to make a fine merc.}
“Dropping!”
Despite not ‘having’ a stomach, Casper still felt a phantom one fall out from beneath him as the sturdy metal clamps that had held his rig steady during the transport, released him as one. Gravity took hold of him, along with inertia and both he and his rig were launched from the dropship at great speed toward an infinite ground. As soon as the mech was cleared, the craft did a sharp upward swing, arcing into the clouds and away from any danger that lurked below.
Casper kept himself upright as he fell despite feeling himself tilt forwards and backwards. Blue streaks of his boosters fired in short, sharp bursts, righting himself perfectly as he threatened to tumble. As he careened toward the pockmarked terrain at speed, the man checked he was coming in at an angle, roughly forty five degrees to ensure he could slide to a stop, bleeding his speed without pummelling the ground at full force.
It wasn’t a danger to do that, but he wasn’t specifically built for that. Some rigs could dramatically enter like that, and it was overall better for them to punch straight down, some even incorporating an air burst landing deployment, igniting the surrounding area of the drop point in an explosion that would merely liquidise the internals of anything organic in the area. Those rigs were super heavies, designed for ‘hot’ drops.
But that wasn’t Casper. He’d never wanted that style of machine. Zeet and he, along with Qik, had chosen from a wide selection of parts to create the mech that ‘felt’ closest to what he would be, if ‘he’, Casper, were a mech and not merely piloting one.
The result? As he fell, he felt light, like he could almost glide down if he wanted to. He felt as if one arrange twitch of his shoulder would get the same from his metal body.
He felt ‘right’.
It took a scant few seconds before his legs hit the terrain with such force it sent rocks and dirt flying all around in a great cloud that obscured him from suddenly awake and watching eyes in the distance for a moment. A fraction of a second later, those eyes watched a dark grey machine fly out of the dust cloud on skis, trailing smoke and dirt in its wake that followed it like vapour trails from a jet.
The mech skidded to a halt a hundred metres away from its landing site, its legs bracing into the skid and a series of three large blue cones of fire slowing him to a halt. It remained still, its two optic ports, scanning and watching the city where the unseen eyes watched it back, undetected by the interloper. The long blade in its hand was not ignored, the machine held it out to one side, the metal perfectly flat. The rain that hadn’t ceased in three weeks, merely pinged and beaded along the perfect edge.
The fisheye lens that was watching, clicked its aperture beforing zooming in rapidly and reading the stencilled text across the interloper’s chest, reporting it to its absent masters.
S P E C T R E
Meanwhile, Casper kept low. He used one hand to brace the front of his mech against the ground as he lowered himself further. Chances were, if there was anyone in the bombed out mega city in the distance, they would have noticed the giant walking mech falling from the sky and causing the same size dust cloud as a building falling over would.
Then again, they also could have dismissed his landing as another shell fired from the distant geckin artillery that had peppered the city with a sustained bombardment before he and Qik arrived for the last forty eight hours. The enemy wouldn’t know when the bombardment would stop, they could use this ignorance to gain a brief element of surprise.
{Spectre, I’m down and inbound. Anything?}
A friendly ‘blip’ began to grow in Casper’s perception. The motion radar, or ‘MR’, along with both ‘friendly’ signals still felt strange to Casper, but it was one of the aspects he had demanded from Zeet. A low profile for himself, but a more sensitive sensor suite for him. He wanted to see the enemy, but not have them see him.
What it meant was, he could ‘tell’ where something was, without needing to look away at a radar readout, or even flick his eyes to a compass with markers. A tiny advantage, but one that had already served him well, way back when he had first fought Qik.
At this time, there was no movement from the dead city.
[Negative Scrub. No one is moving.]
A red mech appeared at Casper’s side, its recon unit briefly turning his way, nodding before turning back. Qik’s mech, compared to Casper’s, felt clunky to the human now. It had none of the articulation his has. When he turned her way to nod back at her, his shoulder pulled back, his arm dropped a fraction. He was fluid. Her whole torso turned, her ‘head’ bobbed, then her whole frame twisted back. It wasn’t her fault, but now the man knew what to look for, he had access to whole other level of movement compared to hers.
She knelt, her body remaining upright, while he stayed low, his legs supporting him, but his whole body brought low by his efforts. His profile was far lower than hers. Still, she knew combat better than him.
He’d seen her in a fight through several of their training sessions. It was one thing to be able to move out of the way of incoming shots, it was another not to expose oneself in the first place.
Casper, or rather, ‘Spectre’ as was his code name on mission, focused up.
The pair of them began to systematically scan the seemingly dead city. Spires and towers were burnt out, some having toppled over. There were ssypno forces in the area, the geckin intel had explained that. Since ssypno equipment was high end and dangerous, it was harder for them to replace it.
Their job was to make this planet expensive for the noble conducting this battle. It was the only language that kind of person understood.
[Scrub, I got a question.]
{Go on.}
[Why ‘Scrub’ of all things?]
When Qik had offhandedly told Casper that her own callsign was ‘Scrub’ she was offended and confused when he barked a single coughing laugh before getting a reign on it. She was deadly serious and rather proud of her callsign. The young man, besides an errant comment, had left it there, but now felt as good a time as any to ask; why ‘Scrub’ of all things?
{Because I scour the battlefield clean. My ops are always described as the cleanest, unless I'm working with someone. They’re always the messy ones.}
[I’m just saying, humans might interpret it differently.]
{You said, but I didn’t spend my career building a name for myself to just change it on a whim. You read?}
[Aye aye Scrub.]
{Right, let's get this done and then we can get paid and you can get a taste of the good life. You ready?}
[When you are.]
Casper urged himself forward as he felt Qik’s ‘blip’ move away to the west, taking a wide route around the edge of the city itself. His ‘feet’ were elongated, turning them into skis that glided across the terrain with amazing ease. His spinal mount, a dedicated jetpack pushed him forwards with vents that could open and close in an instant, allowing him to adjust and change direction with a single thought. He could still walk and run, if he wanted to, but the idea was the ability to lean into the slide and ‘skate’ across the landscape, pushing against the ground with the side of his feet.
The speed at which the city approached and became large, imposing buildings that suddenly dwarfed him, was alarming. He slowed and dropped into a run, then walk, as he made it into the city proper, using the wide streets to fit his mech between the buildings with ease. He kept his blade held low, in both hands, ready to bring it up and swing at a moment’s notice.
Before reaching this planet, Casper had never held a weapon before, but now, with copious amounts of software all feeding him instincts and knowledge that wasn’t his, there was a vague sense of longing for a long range weapon, instead of being limited to the length of his blade.
That said, there was nothing for him to attack. He raised the blade to step around another building before lowering out and ready down the next street, but it was just, yet another, empty thoroughfare.
He didn’t need military software to tell when something felt… off.
[Scrub, do you read?]
{Loud and clear Spectre, what's the situation?}
[Zero contacts. MR isn’t picking anything up and there's nothing in the streets. No sign of any mechanised forces. Are we sure we’re in the right place? Are we getting played?]
Casper couldn’t help but think of the contract the geckins had forced him into. In a desperate need to get something more from the human and his unprecedented lack of drifting when mentally piloting a machine, the geckins had not taken it well when he had expressed he wanted to leave. So much so, the only way for him to ‘win’ his freedom, was to complete the op, without getting disabled. If he wasn’t able to walk away from the op, then the geckins, or more specifically, one of their corpo-nations would *own* Casper outright, changing his designation from a person, to a ‘thing’.
Whilst the geckins hated the ssypno with a passion, a trick or trap to retain access to Casper, might not be outside their morals.
{I wouldn’t put it past the geckins to try something, but if the op is a wash, then they still have to pay us and we’re free and clear. They wouldn’t have fed us bad intel for us to go out here for nothing.}
The Spectre mech peered down street after street, holding the blade out, ready to cut anything that moved or scuttled in half, yet each time; it was devoid of life until he found himself, quite deep into the city.
Closing his optics for a moment, Casper willed himself to send a ping out, searching for *anything* that might show where his enemy was hiding. All he needed as a fraction of movement.
He focused, his mind mentally tuning the sensitiveity of his radar, it sensed the rain, a beehive of noise that was too much, so with an errant twitch of his head, he tuned out the rain. He sensed himself, receiving false reports of a mech, but it was only him. He removed that too. Blind to the outside world, he stayed in place, reaching out with invisible hands, groping blindly for anything.
There were creatures, things that scuttled and things that moved. Living organic creatures of small size. They reminded him of rats, but no rats survived the destruction of Earth to his knowledge. The things were squidgits, vermin if left unchecked, cattle if desired. They scurried and hid in the sewers far beneath Casper’s mech’s feet. Oddly, whilst plenty of the buildings still had these creatures inside, several, were *devoid* of movement. Not a single living thing could be felt by his sensitive suites.
The optics snapped open, and clicked again. Turning his head towards the nearest towering building, he leaned forwards, trying to peer through the destroyed structure to the otherside, but found it dark and unable to see the whole way. This was only one of the nearby buildings that the squidgits avoided for some reason. The building was a husk, burnt out from some unchecked fire, most likely caused by the geckin shelling. The inside was too dark to see anything.
With a mere thought, a floodlight attached to Casper’s head, winked on and bathed the building and its bombed out floors in a brilliant white light.
The sea of cyclops eyes constricted to tiny points as the sea of fisheye lenses reacted to the sudden wash of bright light. In turn, the countless laser cannons strapped to their spines whined as electricity suddenly washed through them.
The MR was suddenly bombarded with with a crowd of movement as the buildings all around Casper came to life.Casper merely ducked as the space his mech had occupied only moments before was dissected by no less than seven beams, all wishing to decapitate him in one fell swoop.
[They’re in the buildings!] He sent frantically, as a wave of scuttling mechanised bots surged from the building and landed on his mech.
Not wanting them on him for a single second, Casper brought his arm up to protect himself and braced his shoulder. Spectre’s main booster, sitting firmly in the dead centre of his back, roared to life and launched the human’s rig into the building and out the other side in a shower of destroyed rebar and materials. The smaller multi-legged technicals were sent flying in all directions, having no hope of holding onto the mech as it punched through a building.
[Jesus!] Casper exclaimed as he turned his head back and watched the buildings suddenly come alive as each floor seemed to disgorge multiples of the round, bulbous, skittering machines in a manner that reminded the man of infestations from Earth. If his rig had skin, the young man was certain it would be crawling.
Remembering his sword, Casper swung it in a downward swipe along the edge of one of the buildings, cutting clean through two with zero feedback as his sword found zero resistance. The metal hulls sparked and fizzled before burning brightly as they fell despite the rain even as they hit the street below.
Bright lines of light lit up the air between the buildings and scorched down the front of Casper’s mech, leaving deep valleys of burnt metal in their wake. Gritting his teeth,a side vent snapped open and a gout of blue flames pushed his mech sideways by pure instinct, breaking line of sight with the swarm and preventing further damage.
{Spectre, report.}
[Contacts! Lots of contacts!]
{I see them, locking on but I need to see more. Just keep moving!}
[They’re crowding me, how are they this organised?!]
{They’re computers, no living crew. They seem smart, but it’s just a swarm. Stick to the plan!}
Casper barely made it to the next intersection where his rig could fit before he saw the bright yellow lines of the spider tank’s weapons cutting into the concrete like material of the surrounding buildings. He practically dove down the next street and picked up the speed again.
As he glided down the road, he saw yet more of the machines breaking through the exterior walls of the buildings and began crawling down towards the ground.
{Head west; towards me. Try and get as many as you can in one long line.}
[Wilco. One conga line, coming up!]
East, North, East, North, South.
Casper used his boosters to jump from corner to corner, flitting from side to side, avoiding and evading the growing crowd that was mere feet behind him. Any building, or even corner of a building that was in his way was destroyed. He felt like a cannonball, fired from its home and would merely bust through anything foolish enough to get in his way.
The bright streaks of line that burnt and destroyed the concrete around him only served to remind him that the enemy was still on his tail. Despite his confidence, he couldn’t let his guard down. Overconfidence would mean his and Qik’s destruction.
West, North, East, North, West.
When he turned down what had to have been a main artery for the destroyed city in the past, Casper could feel that Qik was roughly in front of him in the far distance, she was just on the very edges of his sensor suite’s range. Firing his boosters, his skis slid him down the road until the spider tanks began to pour onto the main thoroughfare from either side.
Using his sword in an upwards sweeping motion, he cut several through their centre mass, but it was a mere handful out of the seemingly endless hoard that was following. He speared several more on the tips themselves, not slowing his escape in the slightest.
From the distance, Casper watched as countless red lights suddenly appeared on the horizon in a beautiful dazzling sunburst. They hung there for a second before the lights turned into red streaks that raced up into the rainy sky, leaving behind white trails of smoke. They then seemingly paused before Casper’s entire early warning system lit up that he was in the direct path of this bombardment, his fiddling with his sensor suite had left him blind to such threats and had him duck in the very last second as they screamed towards their true targets.
They hadn’t been pausing in the sky, they were arcing towards him.
Spectre leaned forward, nearly toppling forwards, and willed itself onwards, increasing its speed until it began to pull away from the amazingly agile spider tanks.
Moments later, Casper could see the bright flashes of explosions somewhere behind him illuminate the surrounding buildings for a brief second. That didn’t matter. If it was behind him, it wasn’t hitting *him*. Relief washed over him as several of the moving, angry ‘blips’ that had been racing after him winked out of existence.
{Brilliant! Just got a few to mop up, but that was excellent!} Qik sent, as Casper rapidly approached where she waited at the city’s edge. From her bulky torso, several flaps opened as he approached and yet more of the red lights were launched from her. The lights were the burners for the rockets that streaked into the sky before taking a harsh turn and streaking into the city, where Casper suspected that they would rapidly meet some of the creepy, crawling tanks.
The Spectre mech shuddered as one, its various metal parts and hydraulics complaining with a loud crash. Scrub ponderous turned to face Spectre expectantly as the remaining targets seemed reluctant to approach, having had their numbers vastly cut down.
[I hate those things!]
{Yeah, MGUs or AATMGUs to be correct. Automated, all terrain mechanised guard units. Nobody likes them, they’re annoying to get out of an area because you have to expose yourself.}
The two machines stood there a moment, facing the city, scanning for any of the MGUs that decided to pop their head out. Whilst they were constantly scuttling, demanding both of their attention, they were staying out of sight for the moment.
{Thanks for being bait.} Qik sent without prompting. Having Casper’s head turn to face her.
[No worries, I knew you had my back.]
{Always.}
Casper was turning to look back into the city and question if they were going to have to mop up the remaining MGU when there was a flicker of a ‘blip’ in his mind’s eye. He had messed with so much of the sensor suite’s settings and was so focused on the city that he couldn’t make out what he was perceiving straight away.
He didn’t even get a chance to send the [What was that?] as a long missile streaked into the side of Qik’s mech, forcibly sending the rig into the buildings and launching Casper backwards with the force of the blast. He rolled in the air, having his legs go over his head, supported by the jets as they turned him rapidly until the bottom of his skis slapped against the ground again. Sparks and debris flew up into the air as his optics searched for the threat, all the while his sensors pinged Scrub.
Casper watched as a new machine, undetected by his own system until now, flew in from the sky. It had solid wings that jutted out of its back, but before he could even observe more of the aircraft, it flew low, close to the ground before it unfolded into a mech, skidding to a halt at the city’s outskirts.
Two study legs slammed into the asphalt of the landscape. Its arms unfurled and without saying a word or even hesitating for a moment, the two arms opened fire with a rain of flashing lasers that peppered the surrounding buildings and Casper’s mech with hits.
The strikes were damaging, several connections and wires were burnt and fused instantly, forcing Casper to reroute connections and energy as he spun away from the gunfire and slipped into the city. Pressing his back against the building that weathered the new storm from the new threat.
He turned his head and saw the smoking remains of Scrub, the mech that contained Qik. Her legs were missing and the torso portion was scorched all along one side. She had been through into a now collapsed building. She didn’t move.
[Qik?] He sent, dumbfounded as laserfire continued over the sound of sizzling rain.

2024.04.27 01:57 Melanie_K11 Parent Positivity (I deserve PP points.)

This is specifically for Bob re: The Cursed Man episode
I love my kids.. but I had a hard time at first. It's hard not to resent the tiny humans that change your life so drastically.
I feel that your baby will love you no matter how much you think you "mess up." Mine are 6 & 7 years old, 19 months apart. I had so much guilt when I had my 2nd baby because I felt that I was taking attention away from my first. I felt so much guilt going back to work when they were both 3 months old because that's all my job would allow. Even with all that guilt, they're such awesome kids. 2024.04.25 17:08 stwabimilk Regretting a Bob; Growth tips?

Hi everyone, I know that complaining and crying over my hair won’t make me feel any better or speed up my growth, but I just needed to vent.
Basically, I chopped my hair a few days ago into a blunt bob with the intentions of gaining more volume and having a more youthful appearance. I’m 21 but for some reason I wanted to look like a rugrat.
For the first few hours I was so excited and happy. Then, I started crying uncontrollably over it because I’ve never had my hair this short. Not being able to put it in a bun or decent looking ponytail was the first trigger of regret. My hair has always been at least as long in the first pic, but it’s actually been down to my butt for a majority of my life. It’s a drastic, compulsive change that I didn’t think over.
You’re probably wondering if a mental breakdown caused this, and honestly, my mom always said that a woman is nothing without her hair (I’m from Europe by the way). I trimmed my ends and ran into my mom unexpectedly earlier this month. We have a poor relationship and she instantly noticed, saying, “Don’t cut your hair any shorter! Your face just gained 10lbs.” She definitely has outdated perspectives over hair health vs. length. To her, any length is better regardless of the damage. Of course, she’s extremely controlling and now that I live alone, the urge to break every damn rule haunts me.
As much as I want to act like I love my short hair just to spite her, it’s completely ruined my self esteem. I can’t stop crying over it, and it’s a challenge to force myself out of bed every morning because I dread interacting with coworkers. I know that hair grows, but I wish I could lock myself in a closet for the next year until it grows out. It’s made me so immature, I literally tried breaking up with my boyfriend over it. I’m definitely more stable right now since he talked some sense into me, but this sucks.
Current routine for my fine, thin hair:
I also try to eat pretty clean, my diet consists of many eggs, yogurt, nuts, meat/fish, and of course, fruits/veggies. To supplement my diet, I take fish oil, d3, vitamin c, vitamin a, biotin, and some collagen gummies I’m trying to use up. I also take beef liver capsules sometimes, it just depends on how I feel and what discounts they have at the Vitamin Shoppe.
I’ll keep you guys updated on monthly growth, but my goal is to hit more than half an inch per month. I really hope I can do it, but I don’t know how my genetics will impact this since I’ve never really grown my hair from such a short cut.
If anyone has any life changing hair growth tips, please let me know.

2024.04.25 17:08 Leading_Fox2741 i cant stand the show as a comic fan

the early seasons were good but throughout the entire show they drag everything out for longer viewership and change the story drastically from the comics because of not wanting to pay people and bad work conditions.
1.characters that are way more important in the comics are throwaways in the show to be replaced by random survivors. Dale, Andrea, Tyrese, Axel, Sophia, Jesus etc were heavily sidelined and barely in the show. despite their significance, i bet people dont even know dale is the one who was supposed to get his leg cut off and his other leg eaten after being bit outside of gabriel's church. I like bob but the tainted meat scene was reserved for dale. him and andrea also fall in love, andrea gets with rick in the end instead of michonne and shouldve died because of alpha
  1. the storytelling in season 6 and on is super repetitive and everything left you on cliffhangers that you wouldnt learn the answers to till episodes later. forcing you to watch nothing happen.
3.Carl's death completely makes everything feel like it was for nothing, hes the future and the only motivation for rick to make the world safe. they also only killed him off cuz they didnt want to pay chandler riggs as an adult. cheap asf
4th and final nail in the coffin. Rick leaving in season 9 and having nothing to do with alpha or the commonwealth completely removes the significance of his character, hes no longer a hero whose the main reason behind civilization rebuilding, the entire purpose of his character. his biggest victories are no longer his. No more big sacrifice for mankind, no more statue, hes just any other leader now.

2024.04.25 06:51 ShyAstrid Help with creation club crashing before finishing dowloading mods

Hello all you wonderful smart, clever people. This is about the third time trying to do this. Had trouble putting mod list on, hopefully this works by me manually typing it out. I know someone replied to this but I accidentally deleted it. Sorry. I just want to know if anyone can see why I keep getting thrown out of creations and can't get back in. It happens about 2/3rds of the way through. Roughly around spaghetti's towns and cities. It goes back to the dashboard and when I try to go back in, it won't let me. I really appreciate any help. I'm old, but I'm really trying to learn about all this. Here is my mod list:

2024.04.22 00:11 Particular-Camera612 In The Return, episode 17, was it ever clarified directly if Cooper had a choice whether.....

To go back in time and save Laura or not?
Because either of those things present drastically different views of Episode 18. If he was essentially forced to do so, it turns the seeming failure to save her into a plan going wrong. If he had a choice to simply stay in the real world, it turns the failure to save her into Cooper's failure to leave things alone and to know when to stop.
I'm just wondering, did the show present the long term plan to finally kill BOB and get Mr C/Dopple Cooper back as always leading towards undoing what happened to Laura? Or was that just a choice offered to Dale?

2024.04.20 06:33 sccvghbbg Is my budgie sick or mourning?

Is my budgie sick or mourning?
Context: my other budgie died a few days ago. The two were together since I got them (they were from the same pet store). Today I have noticed a drastic change in my budgie’s behavior. He’s constantly opening and closing his mouth, puffed up, little energy or appetite, lots of head bobbing (likely grief because head bobbing is a mating ritual), and hasn’t done much all day. I looked up the symptoms and it seems that some of them are related to grief but others could be related to sickness. I may be reading too far into this but I worry he may have a respiratory infection because of the mouth-thing he’s been doing, his puffed up feathers, and how his tail has bobbing excessively. I’m really worried about him because this is the only budgie I have left and I really can’t lose him so soon after losing my other budgie. PS: I know he’s a girl, I just refer to him as a boy because I always have.

2024.04.18 17:28 Shoelesshobos Allow Drums to work with Crush once more

In the past drums could function with the crush perk allowing a barbarian to toss them and break doorways, boxes, etc this was same from frannys. They had modified it so it could not function with these things which was valid as previously there was no equipping penalty for drums so it was as fast as you could equipment and swap you could throw them and they had also removed the ability for barbarians to even equip them.
Since then we have had an equip time added when you first haul out said drum which drastically reduced how many drums you could throw in a timeframe so I kindly ask that we allow once more for drums to work with the crush perk.
Unlike in the past when a barbarian could be literally chasing you down spamming throwables as fast as they could put them on their bars the benefit from range breaking the door has been mitigated.
I think in this current state of the game it’s worth trying it out again and if it proves to be to OP then we can once again remove it but please allow my buddies throw barb Neil Hurt and my multi class throw bard Bob Killan to be a thing once more.
Thank you.
Since

2024.04.17 03:40 Greenrose147 Sick Cockatiel

So, I have yet another crisis here. My cockatiel is dropping weight quickly. Normally, I would drop everything and make a vet appointment, but my car's engine failed last time, and so I have very limited transportation and am not able to make the hour long trip. There's an emergency vet a bit closer, but I'm about to go in for a major life-saving surgery and will be laid up for an unknown amount of time. My husband works 12 hour shifts every day for a week right after this, and will barely have time to do their food and water.
She's gone from 105 to 97 grams in 2 weeks. From yesterday to today she dropped 3 grams. Her behavior has changed drastically. She's irritable and suddenly despises me, but loves my husband now. She tends to "mate with" things in her cage. She's also much more noisy, flock calling a lot more frequently when I'm not paying her attention. Other than that, there are no immediate symptoms. No strained breathing or clicking, no head bobbing, no weird droppings. I know we don't have long to get her help, but I feel like it's my life or hers right now. I don't know what to do.
I feed them a mix of seed and pellets, along with fresh fruits and vegtables, and both vitamin and plain water. I've lapsed on their care a bit due to being in so much pain every moment of every day, but they're fed and taken care of. Their sleep schedule is a bit erratic because I am currently not in control of my body or my sleep. I also haven't been letting her out as much as I should because of the energy it takes to watch her and make sure she's safe while she's out. The weather has been crazy, and I haven't been able to replace the air purifier filter because they discontinued it, and we do not yet have the money to buy a new one because of the surgery.
I'm going in for surgery in 8 hours, but I'll do my best to keep up with this post.
