2024.05.13 21:40 hikarinaraba Is my laptop cooked? [Boot device not found]

The past weekend my HP Victus laptop suddenly randomly froze, then the blue screen appeared and displayed boot device not found, please install bios software. If was fine at first and i managed to use my laptop to work on a school project the rest of the night. On the second day I was able to use it for a few hours then the problem recurred, but this it went consecutive times. I ended up giving up that night and unable to do my work.
On the third day, i backed up my files on a external hard drive since i will go to their service center the following day. I didn't do heavy work that day even though I should be doing it. Anyways on the fourth day I went to the service center and they reformatted my laptop. They say that the hardware is fine, so it might have been caused by faulty software update. Virus is another possible cause they said, but they seemed pretty certain it is the OS update in my case.
So after that my laptop was reformatted and everything is gone. I reinstalled the essential applications, then retrieved the files i backed up the yesterday and once again installed applications i missed. Just few mins after the last application I reinstalled my laptop suddenly froze again...and yes it was the Boot device not found all over again.
I'm really panicking right now since FINALS is coming up and I badly need my laptop for every subject i take. I study in a design related field so it uses some high demand softwares. Any thoughts about this issue and what to do?

2024.05.13 19:42 lep9s problem with the OMEN 16 laptop

Hello, I have a question regarding the HP OMEN Ryzen 7-5800H/16GB/512 RX6600M 144H laptop. It has a problem that appeared Sunday ago, the fans work fine, or not at all, or work but not at full capacity but at 80% or 60%, or stop working, there are times when I get the system fan 90b error, but after after several checks of the fans in the bios, they start working again. They work in different ways, they can work at least all day without mistakes, or 10 minutes a day

2024.05.13 18:26 Lillietta Sounds crazy but does anyone else wonder if HP is a bio weapon lab leak?

Now that I’ve heard that it’s suspected that Lyme disease is a result of a bio weapon lab leak and we know Covid was too, I seriously wonder about HP.
It’s sooooo debilitating. I know it’s endemic and most ppl don’t get sick but still… mannnn it’s brutal.
This might be my HP sick brain thinking too outside the box but I seriously wonder.

2024.05.13 12:52 ohmywebfluid HP Pavilion gets stuck in boot. Won’t boot unless I enter and exist BIOS menu first.

I’m wondering if it’s a problem with the OS (Windows 11) or if it’s a faulty BIOS. The problem is, nothing seems to work because everything involves restarting the PC, and that’s where things get stuck.
I’ve also been trying to hard reset the system but all my attempts have failed. Startup repair doesn’t work either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

2024.05.13 12:17 SpecialOneDz Disabling Intel VMD on HP 250 G8

I bought an HP 250 G8 when I try and install an OS on it cant detect the drive that's installed. I tried looking online how to fix this issue because I know the drive is fine, found a method to install VMD drivers from intel, but when I do the drive still doesn't show up. The ultimate solution is to disable VMD from the BIOS but I cant find the bios setting Advanced settings. Anybody have any suggestions? Greatly appreciated, thanks!

2024.05.13 04:10 reneairton Why some PCs have native speakers and the customs don't

I really like the buzzer sound when I turn on my PC. I know I can hear it only when enter the BIOS, but whatever, Bought some of those buzzers to plug into my motherboard, unfortunately it got a really low volume, if anyone have any hint to make a louder, nice and satisfied beep, I would appreciate.
BUUUT, the question was another. If you already work with some of that pc built by dell, HP, etc., you probably notices that the speaker is pluged directly into the motherboard, and it plays everything. Thought it have some extra instructions, but it have only the + and the - wires. Why our customs PC can't have it? It only got the beeps, so sad

2024.05.12 23:25 aselunar USB 3.0 Ports Not Getting Any Power

Product: HP Z820 Base Model Workstation Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-Bit)
All USB 3.0 ports are not working both rear and front since replacing my motherboard. I doubt it is hardware related because it is affecting all USB 3.0 ports only. I have tried reinstalling the chipset drivers from the HP website, disabling from the Device Manager and restarting, and resetting BIOS to factory defaults. None of these worked even after restarting.

I have made sure that the USB drive I am testing with is working on other Windows 10 machines with USB 3.0 ports. The USB drive is getting no power, no lights on it turn on, unlike when I use it with other machines.

How do I get my USB 3.0 ports to work?

2024.05.12 23:24 Spiritual-Syllabub91 Can't clear cmos after enabling XMP

Hi everyone, not used to asking for help like this but trying it anyways... If I'm in the wrong subreddit, please advise on where I can ask for help instead..
So I was trying to figure out why my XMP profile 1 had capped my Ram at 2933Mhz when they can run 3600Mhz, saw there was XMP profile 2 which had the speed on Auto, BUT the rest of the settings were put to 0, note this is on a Omen HP 40L, so I used the Omen bios Utility tool... Anycase I enabled that and saved & exit, then boom no screen and pc restarted a couple of times until some beeping noises came, tried restarting it and nothing, just beeping noises for a while then they stopped but pc was still on...Did some research and saw that I needed to reset CMOS, tried putting the blue connector to pin 2-3 since I have 3 pins while power cord was plugged out of pc (I PRESSED THE POWER BUTTON TO TURN PC OFF FIRST BTW), left it there a few minutes then put the blue connector runber thingy back to pins 1-2 and switched pc on...Nothing just irritating noises...Researched that and found that it was something to do with the Ram? 1 Long 3 short if I remember, in that sequence a few times over and over... No I can't see the cmos batter so can't remove it and don't have a cmos button unfortunately... Even tried resetting the cmos with a screwdriver put on pin 2-3, and even with the blue connector while the power cord still plugged in... I am just lost, yes I know I was dumb... Any advice would be helpful...
Thank you.

2024.05.12 21:05 forthesect Trouble in turkey town review.

Trouble in turkey town is a free thanksgiving them familly friendly 5e adventure https://monsterfight5e.com/index.php/monster-fight-5e-presents-takedown-in-turkey-town/
An urban campaign mission designed for level 2-3 adventurers, trouble in turkey town is composed of an initial encounter (beware of headcrab like animated turkeys that turn people into turkey zombies),3 pathways to infiltrate a manor, and a mission to recover a cursed cornucopia within that mansion involving 2 gang factions, multiple groups of enemies including another designed encounter, and a final battle with giant turkey monster.
Other than hombrew monsters and an additional flashback mechanic allowing preparation to factor into the heist without actually taking time out to plan or roleplay that preparation before hand, it is run entirely on whatever 5e system you choose to use. Inspired by new jack city, the plot involves a gang leader producing thanksgiving meals from a fae gifted cornucopia that cause magical food comas, the manifestation of nightmare like food creatures, and possible were turkeys. He flees to his manor with the cornucopia after things go awry, wich the party must infiltrate to recover the cornucopia and undo its effect, encountering his traitorous right hand woman and a devious fae along the way.
All in all Trouble in Turkey town is a well polished, comedic, and self contained adventure likely playable in 2-3 sessions or longer if you stretch it a bit. It has few flaws, but there are a couple missed opportunities or areas that can use more guidance or elaboration for the GM and there is a lot of optional content that doesn't provide additional opportunities and may even make the final battle more difficult.
For example, the flashback mechanic: "To get the players right into the action of the heist, this adventure includes a flashback mechanic... For example: If the players are infiltrating Nino's keep from the north side. They could flashback to persuade the local guard to set up an explosion on the south side as a distraction."
Allowing players to simply describe things their characters had done previously to aid in a heist on the fly is a great way to start an adventure in the thick of it while still keeping to the genre, and allows for easier roleplaying of competent infiltrators by allowing preparations to occur with aid of hind site, as players can take advantage of ideas that would occur to serious skilled characters in planning but might only occur to causal role-players in a moment of need.
That said, the benefit is not really well fitted to this module as the heist does not occur until after an inital encounter and there is a full planning phase between the initial encounter and the heists beginning. As well as the missed opportunity of the description of the mechanic not fitting this adventure that well, there is a lack of guidance on what ways a flashback might be used, with only one example being provided. As only a small portion of the adventure includes an actual infiltration, and preparation could be difficult beyond that point as characters cannot interact with the mansion until that infiltration, this lack of guidance is strongly felt. I can come up with at least one idea, once inside the mansion players learn that the personel all have uniforms, and thus can flashback to replicating these uniforms for themself based on a description from an informant, but more guidance would be nice as well as guidance on how to provide examples or explanation of the mechanic to players.
Another area guidance would be critical is the alarm. There are two points during the initial infiltration where guards can raise the alarm, the path where the alarm is less likely to be raised being more difficult in every other aspect, but there is nothing that indicates what this actually does or why it is a significant enough risk that the other more enemy dense infiltration option is comparable. Obviously as a gm I could come up with what the alarm does myself, but given that there are so many moving parts inside the mansion and so many active threats the gang is dealing with, its hard to know what they would actually do.
The rest of the review are a list of potential flaws (including ones involving the final battle and optional content) that might be difficult to understand without reading the adventure, and are mainly for the benefit of the creator of the text.
A motivation for Tea is taking down niko, later it says he has a personal grudge. That information should be in his bio not outside of it, and I would like specification on where that grudge originates.
"•People who eat from the cornucopia become cursed eventually transforming into a were-turkey"
There is no mention of the food monsters appearance here, which is perhaps the more critical factor.
"Keeping the method and place of discovery abstract lets the story flow no matter where your players take it."
I'm not sure it does, not specifying where clues would be as an adventure writer does, but for the gm I'm not sure the same benefit applies.
There are no guidelines for character creation or party size. It would be nice if there were potential ways for players to connect their backstories to the mission, and a good or neutral aligned party seems more or less necessary without going pretty off script.
It's a little odd that the eaters can be awakened with just one action once the encounter starts, but could not be aroused at all before.
Is proximity required to use the action to wake up a bystander or can a player just shout at them?
Whether the number of bystanders saved correlates to by standers awoken before becoming zombies or just bystanders that don't end up dead is not clear.
The reward for playing this encounter well is pretty slim, just one extra potion.
"There are two vaults in the keep. One crew vault and Nino's personal vault. The players have been told that the cornucopia is in the crew vault but it is in Nino's vault."
This is likely something Pookie tells the crew despite knowing better, but that is not really specified anywhere and it just says that pookie knows it is in Nino's without telling where the players are supposed to get the info that that is not the case.
"During their time in Teo's warehouse the characters can rest and plan the heist. This is a good time to introduce the flashback mechanic."
Since the flashback is unrelated to what the players actually plan/prepare, I'm not sure it is.
"Have the players come up with an initial point of entry and begin the heist."
Does it have to be one of the three options? Also is the wall entry point supposed to be along the northern wall? Whether the players know that immmedaitly or find out after looking at all the walls it doesn't matter, but if they try to climb another wall it might be problematic, as some of the walls only have descriptions of wants going on at the keep near the outer wall not that section of the outer wall itself.
In terms of choosing pookie or teo, if they figure out pookie is sus but can't convince teo, the most likely option is to pick neither, but I'm not sure if thats intended as an option.
Pookie has two pretty big downsides that would not be hard for the players to figure out which might be a bit much, but having a named character that might transform if things go bad adds stakes which is nice.
"a empty plate of food and two folders one labeled ̈Crew Vault" the other "Private Vault". A turkey zombie hides in the south east corner."
What’s in them?
The reward for saving Remy in the kitchen encounter is also pretty low considering the dumbwaiter is so easy to find.
The dumbwaiter makes noise, but how guards might react to that considering it's probably a normal occurrence is not stated. Might whether the alarm has been raised effect this?
"The keys need to be inserted into the locks at the same time or the vault an alarm will go off."
Another point where there is an alarm but no stated stakes.
"The vault is full with paintings, sculptures jewels and gold. On the southern wall is a wardrobe that has been boarded up. Pounding can be heard coming from it as if someone is trapped inside."
Earlier the wardrobe is stated to be being carried in the stair room, make sure to say it is only in the vault if the goons were allowed to carry it down the stairs uncontested.
"If there is a battle, Nino will engage for a round or two then attempt to escape to his vault using his hat and get the cornucopia. He suspects it is powerful enough to use to maintain his power."
And if he succeeds in this? What happens then. That is not explained here, and at the final battle section he is supposed to show up after the players if he is alive. Which does not make sense combined with this. How would the players even obtain his hat without knocking him out or killing him? It's possible I'm sure, but it seems like it would be pretty tough.
The players are supposed to be able to learn about Nosh from the kennel master, but what would they learn? As it requires visiting the kernel master, then going all the way down to the basement to meet Nosh or revisit him even after the new imformation is gained, it should be pretty good info.
Make sure this info can in theory result in a positive benefit after interacting with Nosh, not just avoiding negative effects ideally. Perahps an alternate route to defeating the turkey, effectively a different ending path after getting info on nosh in one area, then doubling back to interact with him. Additionally, Nosh has semi critical information, and the only way to bargain with him at present is either to become a warlock or help Niko, step costs. Maybe there is something that can give you leverage over him that the kennel master reveals (it would be funny if it's just a favorite food). Furthermore, why must Nosh be bargained with? The option to attack him or just keep him locked in the wardrobe if he does not help is never discussed.
Killing both Niko and Aurelia should have some benefit, likely an alternate path to defeating the turkey or breaking the curse without it, otherwise thats 3 successive cr 2 battles including the turkey, and they have to fight the turkey without mooks distracting it.
When having the battle, make the monsters and NPC almost like background pieces and only interacting with the players when it makes sense. This will make it easier to run since you wouldn't need to keep track of everyone's hp and turns. It also gives the players a fighting chance against overwhelming odds.
Having the npc be a bit background makes sense, not sure having the turkey and the monsters it spawned be in the background is a good idea though as they are the main obstacle. The giant turkey without the things it spawns having an effect just isn't that interesting an encounter.
What if the players just take the cornucopia, rather than destroying it or having a way to immediately place it in the fey wild. Especially if they don't immediately have the info on how to break the curse this is likely to happen.
"On a success, the host reverts to its original mastiff form, and losing 10 hp."
Clarify that the health total is kept despite transformation, it doesn't go to base hp then lose 10 hp I mean.
"the turkey is destroyed and it reverts to its host form with 1 hp."
The it/host form here needs to be clarified to refer to the dog.
There is little difference between bite and pounce, pounce should do more damage to reflect higher cr, move has a different name anyway.
"Engulf. The ooze moves up to its speed into a medium or smaller target's space and engulfs the target. The target must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or take 4 (1d6 + 1) poison damage and is suffocating."
Should specify target is grappled or restrained or ooze stays attached to them as they move, and give guidance on when a player makes saving throws to break out after failing the first time and if that takes any option from the action economy.
"Any creature may use its action to make a DC 14 Strength (athletics) check to rip off the turkey. On a success, the host reverts to its original form, and losing 10 hp."
Definitely need to change wording on this, like the last instance but even worse as it involves temp hp. Having the pull of method do more damage but work quicker ain’t the end of the world though.

2024.05.12 18:31 TetonCharles A quick guide to **cheap** OPNsense hardware, please don't try to use USB network adapters.

I see plenty of posts asking if this or that cheap awful hardware will work with OPNSense. And the answer is 'yeah, maybe'. But more often that not its going to be janky and unreliable, especially USB adapters, please don't go there.
My answer is find a used or surplus server NIC, they are cheap, you can even find 10GB Ethernet or SFP (fiber) cards for less than $100 out there. A dual or quad 1GB card is going to be plenty for most situations though and those are much cheaper. Then put it in a used/retired Small Form Factor computer, not the MICRO form factor.
If you really want to go cheap, on ebay you can find the SFF form factor computers from Dell, Lenovo, and if you absolutely have to HP. I put HP dead last because they like to lock all kinds of stupid things down, you can't use the pci-e x16 slot for anything other than a graphics card etc, although they do have a PCI-e 1X slot that a NIC will run in. At least Dell lets you put a 10GB nic in the graphics slot, and I've seen SFF (not MICRO!) Lenovo computers with a second x16 slot, so pretty sure you could put a NIC in that. The MICRO or 1 liter form factor computers have zero options for PCI-e slots. So unles you want a bulky tower, the Small Form Factor (SFF) is the way to go.
Right now, I have a 2nd gen i5-2400, at a whole 3.1Ghz LOL. This old Dell Optiplex 790 SFF routes my 1gb connection without breaking a sweat, it was free from work. I bought a 1GB NIC PCI-e 1X card for the second port and its good to go, been working for a few years now. Electricity is cheap here at less than 7 cent a KWH, so its not much of a concern, also we have 6 months of winter so its 30-ish watts just contributes to warming the place in the winter. Theoretically this could route 5GB/s.
Those old 2nd gen CPUs aren't too common anymore as they are 12+ years old. You can find an SFF computer with a 4th gen i5 for $60 on ebay, even an i3 would be fine. Make sure it has an HDD caddy and at least 4GB of ram... plenty of them with 8GB. Plenty of them with a 500GB drive in them too. The reason for 4th gen CPUs is that they supoort PCI-e gen3 which enables newer faster 10GB cards without bottlenecks.
You can find gen2 10GB cards out there used, the dual ones will need an 8X slot. Also aside from BIOS lockouts a 1X card will work just fine in a 4X/8X/16X slot. AND just to be clear, a 4X card will work just fine in a 4X/8X/16X too, basically 'if it fits it sits'.
OPNSense can squeeze into 2GB of RAM, but since RAM is so cheap, 4GB is a good minimum IMHO.
Here is a search on eBay to get you started, have fun!
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=SFF+i5+-NO+-barebone+-chassis+-motherboard&_sacat=0&_odkw=SFF+i5+-NO+-barebone+-chassis&_osacat=0&LH_BIN=1&_sop=15
Another option for a few more $$ is those Mini PCs on Amazon, Newegg etc. The ones with an 11th or 12th gen Celeron (the N5105, N95, N100, etc) and built-in DUAL 1GB or even 2.5GB adapters should work perfectly fine with OPNsense, just don'e expect to be able to use the WiFi. They come with a minimum of 8GB of RAM. I've seen some for $120. These are a great answer if electricity is pricey in your area or you just want something tiny, as most of them idle at less than 10W.... although the N95 for some reason use up to 25W.
PS: maybe the mods could pin this so people see it before posting?
Edit: yeah typo city.
Edit2: Lots of cheap i3 SFF computers for less, some as cheap as $40 even!! Be SURE that it has a CPU and all, lots of stripped out barebones chassis out there.
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=SFF+i3+-NO+-barebone+-chassis&_sacat=0&_odkw=SFF+i3+-NO+-barebone&_osacat=0&LH_BIN=1&_sop=15

2024.05.12 17:43 Tom_Traill Optiplex 790 - Win 7 Pro - AMD FirePro 5100 - 3 displays - Mouse Shenanigans

Optiplex 790 - Win 7 Pro - AMD FirePro 5100 - 3 displays - Mouse Shenanigans
Radeon Pro Software
Dell Optiplex 790 Bios is A22, current bios.
Display 1: Samsung S32D850
Display 2: HP Compaq LA2405 wg (portrait orietation) (Solution: Swap out with Dell U2312 HMt)
Display 3: Dell U2410 (Main Display)
All displays using windows generic PNP monitor driver
This system has been working fine for months, with one minor annoyance. When I turned on the system, Display 2 would go to sleep while the system was booting up about half the time. I would fix that by turning it off, then turning it back on. I thought I would change settings on the display, and that would fix that. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
I went into settings on Display 2 and changed some of them, thinking that might fix the going to sleep problem. Shut down system. This morning, this problem appeared.
Problem #1: When mouse was moved to Display 2, it was captured. Could not leave Display 2. Only solution was to shut down. After a couple re-boots, I went into the menu on Display 2 and reset to factory defaults. Rebooted. Now the Mouse is never caught by Display 2. The mouse avoids Display 2, jumping from Display 3 to Display 1, skipping over Display 2. Rebooted. No change.
I know this is difficult to wrap you mind around from my description. I'm going to do a factory reset (and Reset Application Statistics) of the W5100 after I post this and see if that helps. If it does, I will post an update to this forum.
Edit I reset both items on the W5100. Annoying problem of Display 2 going to sleep has returned. The mouse cursor still avoids display 2.
I'm a retired Engineer. I don't care for Win 10/11, because I prefer to control my PC. No need to scold me for using Win 7 Pro. I've heard all that before.
UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED
After the comments/questions from jalapenoii, I decided the problem might be with Display 2 (HP Compaq LA2405 wg). This display has always been a little possesed. Swapped it out and replaced with a Dell U2312 HMt. The problem went away.
I've arrived at the theory that the W5100 graphics card stores the displays (and their characteristics and last settings...) in a file so it can return to them. The W5100 got confused, or Display 2 did, and whenever I would re-boot I would return to this confused state.
Swapping out a different display forced the W5100 to tear out that page and start a new one for Display 2, which solved my problem.
Thanks to this forum for nudging me to the solution!

I have just installed Qubes 4.2.1 on my HP Elitebook 820 g1, in legacy BIOS mode. It has an i7 4600u, 16gb DDR3, and a 256gb SATA SSD. Vt-x and Vt-d are enabled. I verified the ISO from multiple keyservers, on different PCs and networks. Followed the official installation instructions to the letter. There were no errors during the installation process, and the system boots as expected.
The problem is it's completely unusable, even with just dom0, default service vms, and sys-whonix running. Keyboard and mouse input are inconsistently delayed, opening the Qubes app menu can take up to 5s each time (navigating it is very painful). Dragging a window is very slow and occasionally freezes the whole system for a few seconds. In Firefox, in the default Fedora or Debian disposable, basic interactions such as right clicking or even scrolling are incredibly laggy and slow. I tried YouTube as well, and even at 360p windowed I was getting constant frame drops.
Before trying Qubes I had arch installed with KDE Plasma, and the system was completely usable. Obviously Qubes is much more demanding with the amount of VMs it has to run. To be honest though, I did not expect much better from on this incredibly weak, dual core CPU. The only reason I even tried on this computer was that other people seemed to be having success with similarly specced machines, at least from what I could find though my preliminary research.
I love the idea behind Qubes, and I'm sure the performance is sufficient on better hardware. I don't expect something like this to be super snappy and responsive, especially load times when booting VMs. However, I am not sure exactly what specs I need to have a usable experience for basic web browsing/email/office tasks. The official system requirements only list 16gb ram, 128gb SSD/NVME, and a 64 bit CPU with VT-x, VT-d, and EPT. I couldn't find anything on actual CPU specs (model, core count, clock speed, etc.) though.
I checked if my laptop was on the HCL, which it is (as of v4.0 at least). I also had a look at the Qubes certified hardware for clues, but the ThinkPad x230 is on there, which has a worse CPU than mine! So, either that list is outdated, or maybe I just have unreasonable expectations and most people somehow get used to the extreme lag.
I am still very interested in trying out this (really cool sounding) OS on some better hardware in the future, once I can afford it. If I could get a recommendation for a laptop that can run Qubes at an acceptable (even just "school chromebook" levels of performance would suffice for my needs), it would be very much appreciated!
(On mobile rn, apologies)

2024.05.12 05:47 Sweaty_Sink5863 How do I enable rebar in my BIOS (HP motherboard)

My motherboard seems to be compatible, along with my CPU and GPU, however I don't have the option to enable it in BIOS.
Is it hidden in a sub menu or is this just classic HP BIOS? Any help would be appreciated
