2024.05.14 03:47 Esramos89 Need Advice: Should We Continue Our Service Marketplace Project?

Hey everyone,
I’ve been working on a service marketplace that we launched 10 months ago. We currently have around 3000 users, with about 500 being suppliers. Despite this, the number of transactions is quite low – out of 750 orders, only 90 have actually been paid. The platform itself is stable, and we’re launching an app for Android and iOS this month.
It’s just the two of us running this project on a bootstrap basis – I handle the technical side, while my co-founder manages the marketplace. We live in a small country in Europe (around 15 million inhabitants), and our costs are very low, less than $400 a month, including Google Ads. However, the platform still doesn’t pay for itself; my earnings only cover the Google Ads costs. We also have mandatory expenses like an accountant, hosting, and more.
We spend about $4 a day on Google Ads because we can't afford more, as we both work full-time jobs. My question is: is what we’ve achieved a good sign of traction or not? I’m wondering if we should continue or move on to something else. I don’t think we have enough traction to seek investment given our negative revenue.
I’m happy knowing we have paying users and returning customers, but it feels more like a hobby than a business. We’ve learned a lot this past year and are seriously considering if it’s worth continuing. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your help!

2024.05.14 03:45 lezboss Thoughts? (Pasta from r/Cleveland)

I think the stadium proposal is completely out of control. Am I just lame?
I love my Brownies as much as anyone. And I've never been a fan of the current stadium, as I believe it was a characterless cookie-cutter stadium rushed to be completed in time for the '99 season, is horribly placed that inhibits patronage of the city's bars and restaurants, and was built on prime lake real estate while somehow failing to incorporate the lake into the property whatsoever. You can't even see the lake when you're inside it.
So I'm not against a new stadium. But the citizen/tax-payer side of me is gobsmacked by these figures. Am I the only one thinking "Uh, hold on here..."?
I understand that we've been painfully burned by an owner before when we resisted unreasonable stadium subsidy demands. I understand that Oakland is going through that right now with the A's. And that owners use this unspoken threat to get what they want from state and local govts. But is there ever a point where we allow our fan selves to step aside for our citizen selves and put our feet down when the owner demands go well beyond reasonable? It seems that with each new stadium built, the public subsidy demands grow, a new threshold is made, and the next builder wants at least that and more. Who stops this?

2024.05.14 03:41 storyinmemo Lessons from my first 20 years of Realistic Mode

Started in 1960 and it was rough. Heating issues, water cuts, backed up sewers... but I made it to 10k people. In 1968 I had to enable cheat mode for a one time "loan forgiveness". I built up debt into 1980 but finally turned the profitability corner. So here's what I'm going to try to do in my next play:
Macro Layout
Pollution is king. When things ramped up, 400 meters wasn’t enough. Put the edge of housing a full kilometer from industry and waste handling.
Rail is important early. Lay in a single rail line to pull gravel for construction, coal for a heating plant + bricks, and connecting the farm to the industry. Build your construction industry on one side of the border and your manufacturing industry on the other side of it.
City layout
Start with a bus stop and building your residential buildings 200 meters max away from it. Put paths parallel to roads. Create redundant paths to everything so upgrading to gravel, asphalt, etc. doesn’t break things. Build all your housing on one side of the bus stop initially.
Put city services based on vehicles (police, fire, etc.) outside the core of the city. They’ll only be walkable to half of the city compared to the bus stop but the city can be larger. Same with university and schools. Schools, kindergartens, etc. may become overcrowded as the city grows. Build the large hospital in the core as despite having ambulances it is primarily a walking building.
Transfer for big waste (large) should be at the edge of your city and connected to a rail line. Technical services delivers to there. From there, a rail line eventually exports it for handling. Until the rail station is built, use a distribution office to export waste. Sorting is key and should be researched early. Use Stand for big waste containers (small) attached to roads to collect waste whenever possible. Stand for small containers (large) can be used when footpath access is the only option but it’s remarkably less efficient. Citizens produce about 1:3 biological waste to mixed waste so allocate containers accordingly. Within the city only hospitals create hazardous waste and nobody creates aluminum waste.
Build the small party headquarters to start, then the large technical university. You'll need the numbers for faster education and faster tech tree climbing.
Import 3rd world immigrants once you have a minimum educated base to staff your schools. They're way cheaper. Quality housing > dense housing. Dense is great but dense and poor quality = high resource intake and low productivity. Densify in your second city, or rework.
Monuments only get your to 40% loyalty so don't lose your mind on it.
Water and Power
Redundant and parallel. Every time you place a transformer, place a high six way high voltage splitter with it. You will branch your power network to more places over time and need to reroute wires which you can only do while online with open switch ports. Never use the last switch port without building another chained switch.
Similarly, always branch your water and sewer. Unfortunately you can’t have multiple inputs to a line, but you can at least make sure that you can keep branching until the upstream has nothing left to give. Pay attention to pressure. Build the large water tower to supply the town.
Intake water quality is key. Your wells must be placed where pollution won’t reach. Industry should be fed directly from a well so you’re not spending chemicals purifying water. The more polluted the water is, the more chemicals you’ll have to spend to clean it up and that gets expensive very quickly.
Treating wastewater gives a massive reduction in pollution but also takes an expensive amount of chemicals. Best to put your outlet far away if possible instead of trying to treat the water. Drop a sewer switch (remember, always an empty outlet on every switch for infra changes!) before the outlet in case you change your mind.
Roads
Vehicles use the same amount of fuel as long as they’re in motion. If your vehicle top speed is a fraction of your road speed, you’re wasting money. Road stretches of ~500 meters need to be paved and should probably be divided highways. Tight industrial roads with lots of turns can be gravel because you won’t accelerate much anyway. Panel roads are also pretty good as intermediates here. If you’ve got advanced roads on, make sure to set give ways at every highway intersection or your vehicles will drop down to 50 km/h at every one.
Your center of town road probably gets congested and you can help that by banning heavy goods vehicles except supply.
Industry
Focus around one large long warehouse with a train connection at the end and factories directly connected around the warehouse. Central warehouse should have:
The livestock farm is a bit of a wildcard. It consumes a lot of water and generates a lot of wastewater. Plan for this and consider whether it should be located near your farm or near your factory. I lean towards keeping it with the factory for the sake of concentrating your workforce on one high-throughput passenger line. We'll see how the next playthrough goes.
Mining
Steel is my highest cost and getting to a steel mill that runs even at 5% of capacity seems highly worthwhile. Find coal, colocate with coal mining, attach to train line. Attach transfer to large waste and manage as needed. General separation on site may be reasonable.
Farms
Grow locally. Farms are basically the one thing that doesn’t require people to produce profit or at least reduce cost. As the input to one of your early money makers (clothing)
Economy
Clothing is a top export and accessible early which is key. Build for it, use your own crops, and fill in the rest of the supply chain as you can (chemical plant). Same for steel after some time: find the iron, move it over… but start with making the plant run even with imports.
The republic runs on steel. Want to move something efficiently? You need rails and steel. Want to store it? More steel. More efficient building or process? Going to take steel.
Find coal, make steel. When you have steel, get the radio station going. Yeah, that's not an industry but the productivity boost from loyalty boost is huge.
Now that you have clothing and steel going, make a refinery.
From this point, find the most expensive import and produce it locally until the most expensive doesn’t matter. From there, climb the tech tree into autos and nuclear power. Expand to new cities.

USD/CNH: AUD, NZD, JPY face hammering if Asia’s FX anchor comes loose. May 14, 2024
By : David Scutt, Market Analyst
  • The Chinese yuan is trading at multi-year highs against the currencies of its major trading partners
  • This strength has helped to counteract rampant US dollar strength, preventing larger losses for Asian FX names in 2024
  • With the risk of an escalating trade war with the US, Chinese policymakers may be tempted to weaken the yuan to help with exporter competitiveness
  • A revival of large-scale Fed rate cuts bets may provide respite for battered Asian FX names
If you trade Asian currencies like the Japanese yen, Australian or New Zealand dollar, you should always keep a close eye on what’s happening in the Chinese yuan. Especially this week. Because with trade wars between China and the United States set to erupt again, and with a raft of top tier US economic data scheduled, what happens in USD/CNH will be highly influential for other Asian currencies.

CNH performance influential on JPY, AUD & NZD

As the currency of the world’s second largest economy rising rapidly up the ranks of the most traded FX names worldwide, you’re doing yourself a disservice if the Chinese yuan is not on your radar. As seen in the chart below, for large periods of time, movements in USD/CNH have often been mirrored by USD/JPY, AUD/USD and NZD/USD.
https://preview.redd.it/yd4hx6wmpa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf1aa3b7d74c44631915dc68559b0a17b9c43846
Up until recently, USD/CNH and USD/JPY had a positive correlation in the high 0.8s on a rolling quarterly basis. For AUD/USD and NZD/USD, negative correlations above -0.9 were regularly observed over the same timeframe during the past year.
While the common denominator is the US dollar, with its movements influential across the entire FX market, what is not readily known right now is the Chinese yuan is not weak but strong when you look at its performance against a basket of currencies from its major trading partners, hitting levels not seen October 2022 in April. It’s only really been weakening against the greenback.

CNH an anchor for Asian FX names

Even though it’s not been enough to offset the impact of the strong US dollar entirely, measures from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) to curb market forces seeking to weaken the yuan against the dollar have likely helped limit losses in other Asian FX names against the big dollar, making the yuan somewhat of an anchor for currencies in the region. Hence, if this anchor were to come loose, it’s very likely Asian FX names would be hammered.
One only needs to look back to the yuan devaluation episode in 2015 to what may happen. And that was when the yuan’s influence was considerably smaller than it is today.

Trend breakdown may explain weakening relationships

While the yuan has often had strong relationships with the likes of the JPY, AUD and NZD, that’s faded somewhat in recently. Rather than being less influential on currencies across the region, the breakdown of strong established trends in other asset classes may explain the waning relationship, resulting in choppy price action as traders and investors wait for definitive signals as to which direction markets will move next.
When new trends become established, it would be surprising if the relationship between the yuan and other Asia FX names does not strengthen again.

Trade war risk adds to devaluation threat

If you’re looking for a major catalyst that could spark a trend change, look no further than the threat of an escalating trade war between the United States and China.
If media reports are on the money, US President Joe Biden will quadruple tariffs on Chinese made electric vehicles and sharply increase levies for other green energy industries in an announcement later Tuesday, opening the door for other western governments to do the same given a concerted push to foster local green initiatives.
As mentioned above, Chinese policymakers have been pushing back against market forces seeking to weaken the yuan, setting the midpoint of the USD/CNY daily trading band far stronger than market forces would imply for months on end.
While not a certainty, the threat posed to China’s trade-exposed sectors from greater import barriers abroad, at a time when policymakers are fighting to prevent the yuan from weakening further, you don’t have to be Einstein to see why authorities may be temped to devalue the yuan to support its export sector.
If China were to go down that path, it would likely lead to a rapid appreciation in the US dollar, generating substantial volatility not only in Asian FX names but broader financial markets. As such, watching the daily USD/CNY fix may be advantageous near-term. If a devaluation episode were to occur, it would likely be initiated at the start of onshore yuan.

USD bull case also its biggest threat

Outside the threat posed by trade wars, the other potential catalyst than could spark a trend change comes from the US economic data calendar with CPI, PPI and retail sales figures for April released over the next 48 hours.
For the US dollar, uncomfortably sticky inflationary pressures have been a major factor behind its strength this year, combining with strong, above-trend economic growth to delay the start of the Federal Reserve’s rate cutting cycle.
https://preview.redd.it/48iobvyrpa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=db6418194004169e8f6dfd4feaaccb9c3b1d6067
With these factors part of an established trend, markets now expect it, helping to prevent sustained periods of weakness from occurring. However, now that the number of rate cuts priced in 2024 has fallen from nearly seven to less than two, it’s now up to the data to keep feeding the prevailing narrative. If it doesn’t – as seen when nonfarm payrolls and ISM services data whiffed earlier this month – it can result in an abrupt weakness in the US dollar.
The more data that disappoints, the greater the risk it may encourage traders to unwind bullish bets and result in sustained dollar weakness. In other words, good news is arguably already priced in.

USD/CNH technical outlook

Adding to the sense that this week may be important for broader directional risks for Asian FX names, USD/CNH sits at an interesting juncture on the daily chart, threatening to surge straight back into the uptrend it was trading in for much of the year.
https://preview.redd.it/i3p101rypa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9746fc6e2cce9745a4fe15e33e299736adce5cb
The bounce from the lows struck Friday two weeks ago has been powerful, seeing USD/CNH do away with two horizontal resistance levels at 7.2200 and 7.2335 before breaking through and closing above the 50 and 200-day moving averages on Monday.
With the downtrend in RSI threatening to break and MACD crossing over from below, directional risks look to be turning higher for USD/CNH. Aside from former uptrend support and horizontal resistance around 7.2550, there’s not a lot standing between USD/CNH and return to levels seen in late 2023.
While buying dips looks preferable to selling rallies near-term, it may pay to see how the price action evolves around these levels over the next 48 hours given ample event risk.
Another push and the pair will be back in its former uptrend, allowing for fresh longs to be established targeting a move towards the 2024 highs. A stop order placed below either the trendline or 50/200DMA zone would offer protection against reversal.
Alternatively, should the price fail to hold above the 50 and 200DMA, stops could be placed above this zone, allowing for fresh short positions to be established targeting a retracement towards 7.1730.
Either way, if we do see a meaningful directional shift in the yuan, it’s likely the Japanese yen, Aussie and New Zealand dollars will be following close behind.

2024.05.14 03:35 Sad_Ad_8625 Have I been oblivious to red flags in trainers?

I’ve recently moved across the country and have had to find a few new barns. I wouldn’t say my past experience with trainers has been negative at all; my trainers were always kind and educational, they helped me grow to become confident in my riding and put me on appropriate horses to further excel my skills. However, for the past two years I feel like I’ve been stuck in a loop where the only profit I get is 40 minutes in the saddle and $80 down the fucking drain.
The first barn I joined just so happened to be the first of the few I’d initially looked at. No outward health concerns beside the fact that the place was a little run down. I always rule this out as something normal, because maybe I’m not in the price bracket to be affording nice barns. My very first session I noticed she had a few horses tied in the cross ties for hours on end. And I say hours on end because she loses track of time very easily. Sometimes she would have me in the saddle for over an hour. The horses were always tacked up before I got there. I guess this wasn’t unusual; traffic makes it hard for me to get there early but I was always on time. I prefer to tack up on my own, but I realized it was because after the lessons I had she usually had another student hop on right after…
She would smoke during lessons, which can’t be good for the horses or the kids. She was very confusing and often barked orders at me in the middle of doing a line. She favored certain students and constantly ignored me. (Either because they were frequenting or paid more.) She stuck me on the same PA/QH cross every single lesson I had. It was certainly annoying because I do have long legs. For context, I went to that barn for a consecutive 3-5 months. I’ve been riding on and off since I was 7 and am a junior in high school. She also put inexperienced students on horses who were too green. In my case, I got a horse that was too desensitized. And I know what everyone says, it’s not the horses fault it’s the rider, but lots of lesson horses are desensitized to leg cues, no matter how hard you try to work with them.
I am not someone who wants to spend my paid lesson kicking a horse and being told to stop being shy. Shyness is not my problem. I can be a demure person but I’m not an ignorant one. It is very frustrating constantly being told to take control, when what I need is a willing partner. The one time I ever rode a different horse at that barn just happened to be an OTTB gelding. By no means a bad horse, I adored him absolutely even though he was finicky. I later learned that she has been leasing him out to someone who was mistreating him. Quite blatant dental issues because of the leaser’s harsh hands on the bit. It was disheartening to me because it was obvious she valued money more than the welfare of her horses.
I switched barns after that, in hopes to find a better place to eventually start showing. I do not show because it is not really something I want, nor can I afford it; I take lessons because I do not have a horse of my own and this is really my only passion. But in order to prove I was serious about riding I felt I had to start showing. This new trainer was going well in the beginning. The only catch was her lessons were way more expensive for way less time. I thought this would be better as long as she was more professional. Well, it turns out my old trainer was also in kahoots with these ones. Thankfully, I never saw her; it would’ve been awkward.
I got a bit more freedom to tack up but was still kept on an otherwise tight leash. I rode the same horse majority of the time, again very old, very slow. I would not have a problem with either of these things if I was a beginner, but I’m not. This trainer was a college student, who I felt was simply trying to finagle me for money too. She would discreetly vape during lessons, which I thought was hilarious. She took phone calls and had conversations. She would charge for ‘anatomy’ lessons after calling a rain check and having me come out? (Arena was either too wet or cold) Coincidentally on one of these anatomy lessons, she brandished a wall of twisted bits, saying these are only for the naughtiest of horses. She would act as if I was excelling, yet in the next lesson we’d do something totally rudimentary on the same horse. I have to clarify because I don’t want to seem ungrateful, I’m appreciative of my lessons but when I’ve been doing the same thing for so long it starts to feel like I’m going nowhere/being taken advantage of. My legs were routinely aching after lessons because I spent the majority trying to get the horse to be active.
It makes me feel like It’s my fault and makes me unmotivated to even continue the sport. I don’t have many things that actually make me happy and at this point I feel like selling all of my equipment and quitting. Although I love it, it’s just starting to get too expensive and not worth it. I don’t know how to find a good trainer without spending hundreds of dollars. And even if I did, how do I know they’re not corrupt? (Sorry this is so long, I hope someone reads it.)

I am an experienced woodworker wanting to try CNC, and I recently found a 1st generation X-carve on marketplace for $500.
The seller says it has less than 30 hours, claims it is in excellent condition, and all of the pictures seem good to me.
Is it worth it for a total beginner at this price? Anything I should look out for?
Thanks for any input!

2024.05.14 03:24 djkap2004 Went to see Joe List just now and Louis dropped in.

He was testing out new material for 15-20 minutes before Joe List did an hour of new material at the Fat Pussycat at The Cellar in NY.
Our phones were locked, but I can say he did a bit about dead babies and how really fast cars and under age girls shouldn’t exist. He had some crass jokes, and some dumb jokes. One or two that didn’t hit, and some that were a riot.
He got a lot of laughter, some groans, and i sat in the front next to “white, hipster, probably liberal” couple that was giving him a straight face 😐 for almost All his set. Pretty amazing.
It was all i dreamed of and more. For only $15 dollars on a Monday in NYC, I was in the presence of one of the greats, front row no less.

A bit advice about step2 tutoring
  1. Devine course, one-on-one fee and a class of 20+
  2. Tutors' group, do not pay for 10hours to save less than 100 dollars

2024.05.14 03:12 23px Banned from picking, should I open door it?

But hear me out, finally today we were a little behind (and by behind I mean less than 2+ hours ahead of picking) so the TL sends me on a pick walk. Now let's be clear, if you're sending me on the sales floor I am a SALES FLOOR associate and customers expect to be helped. Keep this is mind. So right off the bat we have no equipment because meat and produce and dairy and overnight steal our L-carts so I have to go to front end to get a carriage, takes five minutes could have spent on to the items.
Then about middle of my pick walk a customer accosts me and asks about some appliance on rollback so I go to get it from the back. Since I am banned from picking I don't remember the backroom locations so I waste five more minutes going to the wrong backroom. Finally get to the bins and dig it out. And the customer says I made her day!
Now I can finish the pick walk since I just made a sale for my whole day's wages (probably two hours wages for the TL). I get back to the opd backroom and I hear the TL saying, "Our pick rate is so slow today." Then they're saying I have 1 item left? So they must have been monitoring me in My Store somehow. Then the TL says I am not allowed to pick anymore and they proceed to send 3 other people out picking. Now we all know they have favorites and I couldn't care less who you call out of work and sleep with but as the TL you're just screwing yourself over. Because for the SECOND time that day I am all alone back there to stage and prep everything for over an hour. I prefer working alone but everybody and I mean everybody else is cross-trained and at least once a week is doing something else like picking or packing or exceptions. I on the other hand am banned from excceptions and picking permanently.

2024.05.14 03:10 auto200 Isn't S&P500 good enough geographical diversification?

  1. The 500 companies in the index have only 70% of revenue source from US. 30% from the rest of the world. Isn't this also geographical diversification?
  2. Buying World Index ETFs doesn't really change the revenue sources diversification much right?
  3. If you want geographical diversification, wouldn't small caps be more effective? Since they have more concentrated domestic revenue sources?
  4. Moreover, corporate America seems more effective and efficient in terms of management of companies... right? Also less chance of fraud and accounting scams compared to other large countries like India and China. Not zero of course (Enron, etc), but definitely less right?

2024.05.14 03:02 Terrible-Act-500 Trees and Wood Experts! Cherry Tree Needs To Come Down - Can't afford the cost but is the wood worth something?

Recent homeowner here! Dealing with my first tree removal situation, I have a cherry tree that is basically dead and starting to split at the base, it's quite big and directly in between me and my neighbor, there is no direct access from the road where equipment could make it thTree. as the access inbetween the fence and my house is maybe 5 feet wide.
I got two quotes:
2.0k from a company that didn't seem to even care about how he was going to access the tree.
3.5k from a company that wants to bring a crane to access from the road
Both companies quoted an additional 1k for clearing about 4-5 branches from another 2/3 trees around my house. I am also able to get a small break if I can coordinate with my other neighbor who also needs a cherry tree to come down, it's smaller but both companies offered about 400-500$ off for each of us if we picked the same day.
I will try to get some more quotes but I doubt I will be able to get the tree down and the branches cut for less than 3k, and that sadly is a cost we didn't budget for.
Now the real question! Could this tree's wood be worth money being a cherry tree? It's dieing but there seems to be only a bit of damage at the base. Its basically two big straight trunks and almost no branches, but i dont know if cutting it one way or another will affect value. I am attaching pictures for size and condition so some expert can give me some pointers. I am in the midwest.. Here are pictures of the tree
Also do the quotes seem reasonable?
