Is Tal just taking a very long nappy nap?

2024.05.14 14:19 TrixieVanSickle Is Tal just taking a very long nappy nap?

I've noticed throughout Discovery and particularly when Adira interacted with Rayner, they have very, very rarely drawn upon the memories of the symbiont, Tal. They did, at one point, use the knowledge of an admiral to find Starfleet, but that's all I recall. Jadzia was always drawing upon the memories of Dax, she (and Ezri) even kept some traits of hosts, both walked with their hands clasped behind their back, Jadzia had a lot of Curzon's traits.
Four of Tal's previous hosts were Starfleet officers, one being the admiral. I get that they're very young, inexperienced and were not ready to be a host, but neither was Ezri, and she was still able to access the memories of all previous hosts and use them to become more confident, despite the messy Worf situation. Both hosts always drew upon memories saying "Well, Tobin was this..." or "Torias once..." and also drew upon being both a mother and a father. Both hosts also still felt the emotions their previous hosts had towards loved ones, friends and romantic partners.
We've not seen that with Adira, I feel like the writers "kinda forgot" (iykyk) that Adira basically has a flash drive inside of them loaded with centuries of knowledge that Adira could lean on and draw upon, especially during crises. They're still the very nervous, unsure teenager that boarded Discovery. We saw the immediate change Verdad's confidence when he stole Dax.
There are a lot of loose plot points in Disco but this one stands out to me, since previously, being joined was such a major trait of two characters.
When responding, please remember that Adira is a non-binary character that uses they/them pronouns.

2024.05.14 14:12 ButchinHeat Replacement keycaps for HyperX Origins 65

Hey everyone, I am currently borrowing a friends keyboard and unfortunately at some point I have lost the number 8 key. I am honestly not even sure how but i've looked all over for it and it's gone. He's OCD so when I told him he freaked out and I told him I would buy a replacement keycap kit for it. After looking online I can't seem to find any replacement caps made specifically for the HPX Alloy 65, only full size key sets. I saw the pudding cap keycaps 2 set which includes some special keys like the correct sized right shift key for the alloy 65 sized boards, but the problem is on the alloy origins 65 boards, the number keys also double as the F keys, which is not the case on the full sized boards. So if I replace all of the number keys with new ones then it won't say which are the F keys anymore(somewhat redundant because they correlate with 1-0 + the - and = keys) but knowing him, he will already complain about replacing all the keys, let alone losing the F key displays on them. Does anyone know where I can possibly purchase the original key caps that came with this board?

2024.05.14 14:07 Rare_Manufacturer588 What are the rules regarding doctor-patient confidentiality if you are on workers compensation?

TLDR: GP gave insurer medical records about me without asking.
Background: I was involved with several incidents last year, which really impacted my health. I was paying for it out of my own pocket, but after some persuading by my mates I decided to go through workers comp. The specialist bills and rehab start to add up fast! So mostly just wanted help with that as I get back to normal. So I went to the GP and got him to fill out some paperwork.
As part of the application, you have to agree to let the insurer contact your doctors. I assumed that the process would be like: 1. Insurer writes to my GP 2. GP let's me know (in general terms) what they want. 3. I can say yes or no. Or, at least my GP would tell me shortly after the fact.
Sure, it might be better if the insurer has access to information. Otherwise it might look like I'd just made stuff up. But I still would've liked to be asked, or know it'd happened.
I wasn't asked. The insurer got a letter from my GP, a list of medications I take, and patient records about me. Some were related to the claim, and some weren't.
This all has me feeling a bit uncomfortable. I'm no longer seeing this GP. But I guess I wanted to know if it's normal? I have no idea because I've never been through anything like this before.
Things you might be wondering: My claim got accepted. Insurer said it wasn't because of my GP's letter. They said it was because of the independent medical exam I had to have.
Now seeing a new GP. But kind of wondering if I should be more careful about what information I share with GPs in future? Nothing to do with the claim, it was all above board. But like all people, I occasionally see doctors for things that are embarrassing.
I found out by accident. I got a call from an allied health professional I saw, asking if I was happy if they reply to the letter they got. I asked my GP if he also got a letter. He said yes, but only provided 'limited information' in response to it. I wasn't convinced so contacted the insurer to see copies of the correspondence, which they recently gave me.

2024.05.14 14:07 CranberryOne8803 I do everything for him, except go to bed when he wants me too.

I think I can decide as an adult female when I myself want to do something.
If I do not want to got to bed with you, because I am an insomniac, and because you are a chronic porn abuser, who while in recovery can be lying (as you’ve done to our therapist, and me many times in the past year), maybe I just do not care.
Have I STILL made you work lunch/snack bags, ran your bath water, left you sweet loving notes on the expo board?? Yes I have!! BUT if I’m not in bed when you want, up with our children who cannot sleep, or choose to sleep on the couch because of your actions (even if it’s just anger that I was not in your ‘martial’ bed with you), NONE of that matters. You have been ugly and almost physically abusive when I chose to sleep on the couch because of your actions against me.
I’ve told him over and over again this is HIS thing he holds over my head to make me some awful person, when he’s done all the lying, gaslighting, and manipulation you can think of. I’ve STILL stayed just for the kids and thinking this is not who he is, but my previous posts and comments will have you all tearing me down to leave, and I get it.
I do EVERYTHING for this man. I was even up tonight talking to a recruiter I was hoping was not an at home work scammer on Microsoft Teams, because his paycheck is eaten alive by how much he has to pay to his insurance to cover my MS, Clots in my right chest and kidney, etc. I’m the one causing the issue with all my stubborn bodily issues I cannot help, that almost killed me and still could. I’m disabled to a point, but lucky to be standing and not as bad as most MS patients at my younger-ish age.
I do it ALL for him and my kids. He doesn’t deserve it and they do. If I stay up a good chunk of the night making sure they are OK, I should have that right. He says, ‘I did not feel you going to bed when I usually do’. What??? If that’s the case then you are choosing to ignore me when you know I get in the bed. You cannot have it both ways, ‘Oh, I was sleeping too hard to know you were there to love on you.’
It’s all manipulation. I’m tired of doing all these nice wonderful things to just be hurt, told to shut up, and the ONLY thing that matters to him, even if I spend 20min rubbing his head until he falls asleep, is that I do not share the martial sleepy bed where we do not touch together anyway is the issue… WTf?! To me this is deflection. I’m done with this crap.
If this is the ONLY thing that upsets you, that you make a big deal about when I do literally everything else, you are an AH.

2024.05.14 14:01 Mrmuse12 Why a new Quincy steakhouse in old Masonic Temple has some neighbors worried

Why a new Quincy steakhouse in old Masonic Temple has some neighbors worried
QUINCY − One of the busiest stretches of Hancock Street in the city center sits back-to-back with a leafy neighborhood of single-family homes. The contrast is leading to conflict, as a celebrated Quincy restaurateur moves forwards with his plans to bring a three-floor Italian steakhouse to the old Masonic Temple, which was severely damaged by fire in 2014.
Jimmy Liang, founder of JP Fuji Group, went before the licensing board May 7 seeking an all-alcoholic beverages restaurant license for the 11,340-square-foot Masons Steakhouse at 1170 Hancock St. He said the restaurant will have capacity for 240 diners and will also host functions such as small wedding parties. The board voted unanimously to grant the license.
The old Masonic Temple is owned by FoxRock, and the restaurant will be part of the real estate developer's downtown Center and Stone project, which also includes 267 apartments across two six-story buildings, one of which will host a Citizens Bank on the ground floor.
Quincy restaurateur Jimmy Liang plans to open Masons Steak House in the former Masonic Temple on Hancock Street in Quincy Square. He says he has always admired the architecture of the building. Thursday, March 14, 2024. Neighbors worry about parking at the new Quincy steakhouse in the Masonic Temple
Multiple homeowners on Russell Park and Whitney Street complained that their Residential A neighborhood already suffers from too many people parking along the curbs and even in front of their driveways, blocking access and egress to and from their homes. Residential A districts are restricted to single-family homes.
Without a parking plan, many say Russell Park residents will suffer from its proximity to the new steakhouse.
"(Customers will) look to park as close as they can to the facility, and that means on Russell Park," said Robert Cerasoli, a former Massachusetts state representative for the district from 1975 to 1991 who lives on Russell Park. "We're going to be descended upon by these people."
City Clerk Nicole Crispo said that Liang is working with Ward 1 Councilor Dave McCarthy and Mayor Tom Koch's office to develop a parking plan.
The plans could involve Liang using municipal parking at the Quincy Center T station across the street where a temporary Citizens Bank trailer now stands, according to Crispo. The historical society could also share available parking space, Crispo said.
Police Chief Mark Kennedy said that in his 26 years as a Quincy officer, he never had a problem with any of Liang's restaurants (Liang currently owns four in Quincy alone). Kennedy noted that the license is contingent on a parking plan, and that the board could require Liang to come back for another hearing if any of the neighbors' fears materialize.
Nightlife in Quincy Center another worry of neighbors
Some also objected to Liang's plan to keep the restaurant open until 1 a.m. Liang said he hopes to bring some of the nightlife back to Quincy Center that has been lacking since the COVID outbreak in 2020.
"I think 1 a.m. is really late," said Randy Hoes, who lives on Russell Park. "I'm not interested in a lot of carousing around and boozing and what not. I would appreciate 11 p.m. at the latest."
"Where are all these people going to park?" Joann Cerasoli, also of Russell Park, asked. "How late are they going to stay?"
'We are not NIMBY people'
Robert Cerasoli said he doesn't oppose the restaurant but there needs to be a plan for parking.
"We are not NIMBY people," Cerasoli said. "We believe in progress of the downtown. ... undefined
Kevin Norton, of Whitney Street, said his property abuts the proposed restaurant and complained that it would make an already bad parking situation worse.
"It used to be nice and quiet, no cars in the street," Norton said. "Now, it's a nightmare."
Norton said incessant noise from construction of the Center and Stone development has been a nuisance. "My taxes go up every year," he said. "My quality of life goes down every year."
As of now, the restaurant has about 30 parking spaces behind the building for staff and customers of the 240-seat restaurant, Liang said.
Chamber of commerce defends Liang
President of Quincy's chamber of commerce, former state treasurer and 2010 gubernatorial candidate Tim Cahill, vouched for Liang, who has run restaurants in Quincy for 25 years.
"They're not outsiders," Cahill said of Liang's team. "They will be part of the community."
Cahill told neighbors that the 1 a.m. closing does not imply a nightclub atmosphere. "The prices are such that it's not going be a college crowd – young kids getting wildly drunk and having problems," he said.
Liang has said Masons Steak House will have some affordable options.
"I'm going to keep it medium," he said of the prices. "(A steak) could be $40 or as expensive as $200."

2024.05.14 14:00 chnky18 Run electric thru foam board?

In the basement there is a foam insulation board mounted directly to basement wall with drywall on top, no studs. Looking to finish the basement (by a pro) and one says we have to rip out the existing wall because you can’t run electric thru the foam board and need to put up new walls with studs. The other says you can tunnel thru the foam board and it’s no issue.
Who is right? Would love to save the wall and reduce cost if possible.

2024.05.14 13:57 ilovepeachcobbler17 Patient fall - 2nd day off orientation

I’m on my second day off orientation in the ED. Had my first pt “fall” today if you can even consider it that. She was 90 and the nurse before me gave her 3 doses of dilaudid and a small dose of Ativan because she was writhing in pain. It’s currently 1905, I came on at 7. Pt’s daughter comes out of the room and says she needs to use the bathroom and usually is ambulatory and independent. Bathroom is connected to the room. Tech goes into the room to escort pt to the bathroom, I go into another room to see a pt who passed out 3 times today. I have a needle in my other pts arm when I get a Vocera call that the tech needs help. I quickly finish up my IV and go help the tech, I’m greeted by charge and another nurse in the room. We check a sugar and it’s a little elevated. Pt is fine, never hit the floor, no injuries sustained. MD notified and fluids on board. Thought to be an orthostatic episode. Charge nurse comes to tell me I still have to complete the fall form, technically. Pt goes to surgery, I give report (“fall” included) to the floor she’s going to after surgery, and tell whoever came to get her about the orthostatic incident. I don’t complete the fall form until around 11pm because I was always told pt care comes before documentation, and the ED was slammed. I would be wrong to say I wasn’t a little overwhelmed. OR nurse calls me furious that no one told her she had a fall. I explained everything to her but I’m sure she was still pissed.
I’m going to call my manager in a few hours to talk to her about it because I am truly freaking out. Im sure I’m not going to lose my job or anything but still freaking out. Please be honest, am I freaking out for nothing?

2024.05.14 13:46 maskuraid Does Umbris, Fear Manifest trigger exponentially when Copied

Forgive me if this is a silly question I'm new to the game and still learning, but I'm wondering if I have this ruling understood.
If I have [Umbris, Fear Manifest] on board and I cast [Rite of Replication] with its 5-cost Kicker, this creates 5 token copies of Umbris.
Each token is a Nightmare Horror that enters the battle field. Does the effect trigger on cast, and then trigger each copy, in addition to triggering the original umbris, and does the legend rule apply before or after this interaction.
As far as I understand, the options are as follows:
That or some unexpected result hits, if so let me know!
I'm eager to learn more about the game and having fun working with this commander so a small deranged part of me hopes that it triggers 31 times (unless my math is awful and its more!).

2024.05.14 13:45 --iO Cant someone tell me what flirting is?

Hi all, I am trying to figure out what flirting is. I have read through post here and I more confused than before, I just don't get it I guess. My take away from the reading is that flirting is simply just talking to someone. Which can't be right. lol.
Also what is dating? Is just hangout a date?? I ask because is hanging out and talking Dating and flirting or is it just hanging out sharing a lunch or dinner and talking as friends just that, friendship building?
I mean how do you learn about someone and become friends if you don't talk to them about them and yourself??
I hang out with a lady at my job from time to time (not much because I think she thinks I like her more then friends, So she is very stand offish even though my first words to her where that I am not hitting on you, just trying to get to know you or something along those lines).
I should not say she is stand offish. She is very engaging at work. But she is not 100% on board with hanging out outside of work in my view.
But am I flirting with her by just talking to her?? Just trying to understand why I get the vibe that she is worried that I will mistake her friendliness as something other than being friendly. I have said to her on many occasions that she should not worry that I know better to not mistake her being nice as anything other than her being nice.
We have been hanging out for about 8 months off and on meaning Like we may do lunch 2 to 3 times a month. We have hung out outside of work about 3 times in those 8 months. Nothing hardcore. We have done dinner, the mall, a play and the museum.
But dang if our conversation are not knocked out of the park! THey are great. We talk about everything. I mean everything. No topic is off limits. I have learned a lot about her in 8 months and I have told her a lot about me. Its been a blast as I really enjoy talking with her.
But now that summer is here I have asked her if she wanted to do more things where we hang out. She says sure she wants to do these things but when the time comes to do the things she says no she can't because of some reason. Again this if fine.
She does not hang out with me every time I ask so that's good I'm guessing but when she does say yes we have a great time.
Just want to make sure she does not feel I am flirting with her as I do not want to scare her away as I do like hanging out with her. I am starting to think she is thinking I am trying to date her or am flirting which may explain her reluctance to hangout.
Please note I get she has free will and no is a valid answer to a request to hang out . Just want to make sure I am not doing something that is making her say no more than yes. THanks!

2024.05.14 13:41 AwkwardHumor6344 Squaring off uneven edges on a box.

I've built a lot of things but this small 6x10 hardwood box I built with several different types of hardwood has been the bane of me. It was rough hewn wood and I thought I had cleaned it up pretty well but some board widths were like 16th shorter or longer and now I have a box with some..unsquareness.. The wood is expensive so I want to be careful.
Ideas? I have a planer (does 1/64") and sanders- I don't want to lose the edge so sort of wary on sanders. I'm looking at ~16th of an inch to 32th of an inch off in some areas, at angles. say a slope of 5 degrees+ over 4" in some cases.
What's a conservative way to square this off?
Thank you experts.

Rented a ubetesla with hertz, used my insurance with Allstate. Got a crack along the battery compartment hitting a speedbump. Its covered but now they are denying to repay me for a rental car even though I have rental reimbursement. Saying only my original vehicle is covered? What can I do? Call the state insurance board and see what they say? Why can they cover the claim as a rental car but not the reimbursement for the new rental vehicle? Does this sound legit or just them wiggling out of it? They already assigned a special investigator and the claim aginst the rented tesla was cleared to be payed by allstate. This is a $900.00 loss for me. Any advice?

2024.05.14 13:23 Crown421 Reasonable Wyse5070 Extended NAS build?

I recently bought a Wyse5070 extended for quite cheap, with the initial goal to make it into a replacement router. However, I have since realized that I am not quite ready to go down that rabbit hole, and that some storage is much more pressing.
I have now spent many hours searching and reading about this, but I am not getting much clarity and thought I would ask here.
To set the scene:
Basically, I would like to set up a small, power-efficient box with a few services, that keeps my data organized and save.
What I am now struggling with is how to get some storage space. From my research I can see a few options 1. Get 2 large SSDs (one via standard M2 SATA, one via wifi-slot adapter), and mirror them, using the built-in eMMC for boot/OS. + Easy, quiet, power efficient - Costly to get even 2TB drives (about 100£ each) 2. Get a large(ish) SSD for caching and plug in some USB drives (either multiple individual ones or USB multi-bay enclosure) + Easy and cheap - Low transfer speed, USB slightly less stable interface - Does not seem great, but can't quite say why. 3. Inspired by this, and this update, I could get an LSI HAB, perhaps like LSI SAS 3442 or LSI 9205-8e, and attach drives there, still with an M2 SATA SSD for caching (I think). + Should be robust, reasonably cheap - The posts above make me think that this will a quite complicated, with lots of worries about heat and power supply. - Unclear if the cards linked are actually compatible with the Wyse. 4. "Give up" and buy/ build another device, i.e. a HP Microserver, or board, case, etc separately.
I am leaning towards option 3, but even after a lot of search I am unsure how to start planning/ selecting components. Does it make sense to start with option 1 and smaller (1TB) drives to get started and set-up, and later add the HBA?
I would be very grateful for any comments or advice, and will happily update once I get "something" set up.

'Jonathan Bailey doesn’t like to bare it all. But vulnerability fueled his best performance yet' - Jonny interview with the LA Times

“This is where all the cruising happened.”
Jonathan Bailey and I are standing in Pershing Square on a bright, blustery spring afternoon, nearing the end of a homemade queer history tour of downtown L.A.: One Magazine, Cooper Do-Nuts/Nancy Valverde Square, the Dover bathhouse, the Biltmore Hotel and this, the city’s former Central Park, a haven, since before World War I, for “fairies” and “sissy boys,” servicemen on leave and beatniks on the road.
“Is it still happening now?” he asks.
“Probably not as much,” I venture.
“Well, you let me know if it’s happening,” he teases, a mischievous smile lighting up his face.
Bailey understands the uses of the charm offensive. As Sam, the handsome Lothario of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s delightful pre-”Fleabag” curio, “Crashing”; Anthony, the romantic hero of “Bridgerton’s” second season; and John, the jerk of a protagonist in Mike Bartlett’s love triangle play “Cock,” the English actor, 36, has swaggered up to the precipice of superstardom. With roles in such studio tentpoles as “Wicked” and “Jurassic World” on the horizon, he may just break through. Yet he delivers career-best work in Showtime’s queer melodrama “Fellow Travelers,” as anti-Communist crusader-turned-gay rights activist Tim Laughlin, by leaving behind the self-assured rakes and tapping a new wellspring: soft power.
Tim may be, as Bailey puts it, “an open nerve,” but as it turns out, the devout Catholic and political naïf — who falls for suave State Department operative Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller (Matt Bomer) just as Sen. Joseph McCarthy tries to purge the federal government of LGBTQ people — is formidable indeed.
Stretching from the Lavender Scare to the depths of the AIDS crisis, in scenes of tenderness, cruelty and toe-curling sex, Bailey’s performance communicates that little-spoken truth of relationships: It takes more strength to submit than it does to control. The former demands discipline, courage, trust; the latter requires only force.
“In ‘Bridgerton,’ [Bailey] is like a Hawkins Fuller character — he is very sexy and has lots of power, has that kind of confident charisma that absolutely is not Tim at all,” says “Fellow Travelers” creator Ron Nyswaner.
But any doubt about Bailey’s ability to mesh with Bomer, who boarded the project early in development, was put to bed with the actors’ virtual rehearsal of a meeting on a park bench in the pilot. “‘Well, that’s a first,’” Nyswaner recalls an executive texting him. “I cried in a chemistry read.”
‘Am I inviting people in?’
Bailey grew up in a musical family in the Oxfordshire countryside outside London, and this, coupled with an appreciation for the morning prayers, choir practice and Mass he attended as a scholarship student at the local Catholic school, fed his precocious talents. (“I loved the performance of it,” he laughs. “Not to diminish the celebration of religious process, but I did love the idea of wearing a gown.”) By age 10, he’d appeared in the West End, playing Gavroche in a production of “Les Misérables,” an experience he now recognizes as an encounter with a queer found family — albeit one shadowed by the toll of the AIDS crisis, which peaked in the U.K. in the mid-1990s.
“When I’m asked about my childhood, there’s so much I don’t remember, and I think that’s true of anyone who’s been in fight or flight for 20 years,” he says. “I would have been in a cast of people whose friends would have died in the last seven years. I think of where I was seven years ago. I had all my gay friends then. It’s only retrospectively that I can retrofit a real gay community around me [in the theater], that I just wasn’t aware of [then].”
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, American and British culture presented queer adolescents with a bewildering array of mixed signals. As beloved celebrities came out in growing numbers, and the battle for marriage equality became a central locus of LGBTQ political organizing, the media continued to propagate harmful stereotypes of gay men as miserable, lonely, perverted or worse — and, Bailey remembers, callously turned George Michael, arrested on suspicion of cruising in a Beverly Hills restroom in 1998, and Irish pop star Stephen Gately, who revealed his sexuality in 1999, fearful he was about to be outed, into tabloid spectacles.
No wonder Bailey, like many LGBTQ people of his generation, should feel the “chemical” thrill of “validation and acceptance” during London Pride at age 18, then embark on a two-year relationship with a woman in his 20s.
“Dangerously, if you’re not exposed to people who can show you other examples of happiness, you think that’s the easiest way to live,” Bailey says. “It’s funny. You look back and you can tell the story in one way, which is that I always knew who I was and my sexuality and my identity within that. But obviously at times, it was really tough. I compromised my own happiness, for sure. And compromised other people’s happiness.”
https://preview.redd.it/9q0vkj3djd0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c631452122b5fb2c401e95352dcc0c21d54d0d7
Disclosures about his personal life have become particularly thorny for the actor since the premiere of “Bridgerton,” the blockbuster bodice-ripper from executive producer Shonda Rhimes.
“The Netflix effect does knock you off center completely,” he says, recalling the experience of finding a paparazzo waiting outside his new flat before he’d even moved in. “Suddenly, you do start having nightmares about people climbing in your windows... Even now, talking about it makes me feel like, ‘Am I inviting people in?’”
He is also critical of the media for churning out headlines about the smallest details of celebrities’ private lives, often detached from their original context. In an interview with the London Evening Standard published in December, Bailey described a harrowing encounter in a Washington, D.C., coffee shop in which a man threatened his life for being queer — and, in recounting the experience, offhandedly mentioned the “lovely man” he’d called, shaken, after it happened. Although Bailey acknowledges that the original story handled the subject with aplomb, he felt dismayed that more attention wasn’t paid to the intended warning about rising anti-LGBTQ sentiment: “The only thing that got syndicated from that story was that I had a boyfriend, and it wasn’t true,” he sighs. “It was kind of depressing, if I’m honest.”
Still, Bailey, who once turned down a role in a queer-themed TV series because it would have required him to speed along revelations about his personal life he wasn’t ready to make, is prepared to embrace the power of vulnerability when it feeds the work. Although a member of his inner circle expressed doubts about “Fellow Travelers’” steamy sex scenes, for instance, the actor intuited that they were what made the project worth doing: “I was like, ‘I’m telling you, they are the reason why this is going to be brilliant.’”
‘He’s changed my trajectory in my own life’
To those who would complain about the state of sex in film and TV, “Fellow Travelers” is the perfect riposte. All of it matters, from Tim’s first flirtation with Hawk to the finale’s closing minutes, because the series, at its core, is about the importance of soft power: the strength required to bend, but not break; to adapt, but not abandon oneself; to survive without shrinking to nothing in the process. And depicting that through sex, specifically gay sex, makes “Fellow Travelers” radical indeed.
Bailey understands that baring so much comes with certain risks. When I tell him that research for the story has filled my algorithmic “For You” feed on X (formerly Twitter) with speculation that his onscreen relationship with Bomer has a real-life element, he notes that “shipping” fictional couples and costars alike has long been part of Hollywood fantasy. But he bristles at the implication that he and Bomer are anything but skilled actors at work.
“I would love for people to know that the success of our chemistry isn’t based on us f—. It’s actually about us leaning into the craft,” he says. “It’s a vulnerable situation to be in, talking about it on record. I don’t want to rob people of their thoughts. But I do have a set of values, and as an artist, you don’t need to be f— to tell that love story.”
Underlying that craft, Bailey adds, is the confidence to speak up, as with one scene in “Fellow Travelers” that was adjusted because he said, “I don’t want to be naked today.” He learned to use his voice the hard way: In his early 20s, he recalls, he was once “bullied” on set when “someone was threatened” by him and vowed to himself, “I’m never going to do that to someone. I’m never going to allow that to happen."

This impulse to direct his influence in support of others has blossomed further with “Fellow Travelers.” On the day of our interview, Bailey enthuses about an upcoming meeting with legendary gay rights activist Cleve Jones and shares his idea for a docuseries recording the stories of elders in the LGBTQ+ community while they are still here to tell them. He describes lying in a hospital bed on set on World AIDS Day, in character as Tim, surrounded by gay men who had lost friends and lovers during the crisis, and finding himself thinking, “What do I want to leave behind?”
“I think he’s changed my trajectory in my own life,” Bailey says.
This is, perhaps, the most common reaction I know to diving deep into queer history — the understanding that we, like our forerunners, are responsible for shaping the queer future, whether in politics, society or art. No one is going to do it on our behalf.
As we stand on the nondescript corner now named for her, I relate the story of the late queer activist Nancy Valverde, who was arrested repeatedly while a barber school student in the 1950s on suspicion of “masquerading” because of her preference for short hair and men’s clothing, and later successfully challenged her harassment by the police in court.
“What a hero!” Bailey exclaims, wondering at Valverde’s bravery. “The thing that’s so interesting with power battles is, ultimately, identity is the thing that gives you the most strength and power in your life, isn’t it?
“Because that’s one thing people can’t take away from you: who you are and how you express yourself."

The Story of a Family

Luigi had rarely been happier to get home than he was as he returned from the gym. He limped up the steps on his sore ankle, looking forward to dropping into bed with an ice pack, a nice mixed drink, and that sci-fi novel Noemi couldn’t stop raving about.
Seeing Noemi had been the only bright spot in this absolutely cursed day, and the universe had even had to go and try to ruin that! He couldn’t wait for today to be over – surely tomorrow would be better, it had to be!
https://preview.redd.it/5tpumpa5id0d1.png?width=1226&format=png&auto=webp&s=1b37c0335939d15ccff6b59a8604a26526667c98

Entering the downstairs foyer the first thing he heard was Chubbs, meowing plaintively. Had he forgotten to feed her? Glancing up the steps Luigi did a double take. Smoke was pouring out from under the door of his bedroom, his cat standing nearby doing her best to alert someone to the problem.
Ignoring the pain Luigi bolted up the stairs, nearly falling headfirst into his room when his ankle buckled underneath him. Catching himself on the doorframe, he continued inside to find the table on which rested Papa Jack’s urn, and the candle from Beau he’d forgotten to extinguish, ablaze.
https://preview.redd.it/kas5n2o9id0d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=2da1b224abeea1f580f65a1d8af61c06fb6c5759

Luigi’s heart jumped into his throat as she saw the flames engulfing Papa Jack’s remains. Without thinking he started to reach forward to grab the urn out of harm’s way but was stopped short by the intense heat radiating from the fire.
Instead, he ran back out to grab the fire extinguisher hanging in the hallway, planting his feet and venting his fear and frustration in a primal scream as he sprayed the foam in a wide arc across the blaze.

Once the fire was extinguished Luigi was left with the charred remains of ruined furniture and his papa's urn, standing like a sentinel in the middle of it all. It looked OK, but he had no way of knowing if Papa Jack's connection to the physical world had remained intact.
Luigi started to cry then, giant choking sobs that racked his entire body. He gasped out a plea to his papa, to the watcher, to anyone who could hear him to please let it be OK, to give him a sign. He didn't know how he'd live with himself if he’d destroyed his papa’s only link to the mortal realm.
https://preview.redd.it/lq557c3pid0d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=302a42860672977bf55709f0cf09e15008774825

Suddenly he felt a pair of strong arms wrapped around him, heard Papa Jack whisper in his ear that he was here, everything was OK.
For a long while all he could do to return the hug as if his life depended on it, his Papa rubbing his back like he used to do when Luigi was a child. Big fat tears cascaded down his cheeks as he told Papa Jack that he was so sorry, so stupid, and promised never to let anything like that happen again.
When his tears were finally spent Jack invited him to sit down and tell him everything. Luigi offloaded his tale of woe and apologized again, thanking him for coming. Papa replied that honestly, he hadn’t gotten a choice! He’d intended to visit as soon as he could when he heard Luigi’s sobs, but he’d found himself physically pulled across the barrier separating the worlds, unceremoniously deposited in the hallway of the boarding house.

After that Jack went downstairs himself to get his son that drink and the ice pack he needed more than ever after his terror fueled run.
Luigi downed his glass of nectar and strapped the pack to his burning ankle but decided not to risk falling asleep on his papa. Instead, using the wall for support, he hopped to the chess table just outside his door, settling in for a relaxing game while they chatted.
“I’ve been very proud of your recent accomplishments” Jack began. “Tell me the latest on your lovely ladies so I don’t offer you bad advice when this fine juice loosens my tongue later.” Luigi smiled, always happy to discuss his favorite sims.

Luigi told Papa Jack all about his latest dates with Amaya and Noemi, not sure how much had come across in his nightly updates to the urn.
Jack was quiet at first, lost in thought. Finally, he told his boy “I’d say you’re incredibly lucky and unlucky. Both your girls sound great, but you’re not going to be able to keep the two of them fully satisfied indefinitely. Sooner or later, you’ll need to make a choice”.
Amaya was clearly a lot of fun, but it seemed to Jack that she and Luigi didn't "click" as well as he and Noemi. However, his responsibilities as a legacy heir meant he had to have a child. Was he prepared to do that on his own if he wanted to stay with Noemi and she refused to come out of "hiding"?

Jack went on “You have time son, but your next birthday is closer than you might realize. I suggest you put some thought towards your future.”
Luigi frowned slightly as he processed his papa's advice. Being in college it sometimes felt like he was suspended in a bubble, not as "grown-up" as his cousins with their full-time jobs and "adult" responsibilities, but that wasn't true. Time marched on, and his university days would soon be over.
He thanked his papa and pondered his next move on the board. Gazing contentedly at the ghost sitting across from him, he reflected that maybe it hadn't been that terrible of a day after all.

2024.05.14 13:03 FounderFolks How NoDegree Earns Up to $300k Empowering Job Seekers

Steffie here from Founder Folks, with a recent interview I did with Jonaed Iqbal from NoDegree Inc.
Here is his story how he started and grew NoDegree Inc.
Name: Jonaed Iqbal
Company: NoDegree Inc
Other Founders: 3
Employee Size: 3
Technology Tools: Riverside.fm, Descript, Davince Resolve, Slack, Zoom, Fireflies.ai, Simplecast.fm, ChatGPT, Lobby.so
Revenue: Up to $300K
Founded: 2014
Website: ~www.nodegree.com~
Introduction My name is Jonaed Iqbal. I am the Founder of NoDegree.com and host of The NoDegree Podcast where I interview people without college degrees and have them share their stories. NoDegree.com helps people without college degrees find meaningful careers that pay well. We realize that just because someone doesn’t go to college, doesn’t mean they should be denied opportunity. NoDegree shares roadmaps on how to break into careers that don’t require degrees.
Before this, I was an actuarial assistant at MetLife. I realized I didn’t want to study hundreds of hours to pass exams for a career I wasn’t passionate about. I worked for a few years. I then worked as a Data Analyst for a NYC agency and then a Product Manager for a FinTech company.
The Inspiration Behind NoDegree Inc I was on Reddit. I saw a post on AskReddit with the title, “For those of you without college degree who make over six figures, what do you do and how did you get the job. I saw jobs like claims adjuster, surveyor, systems administrator, elevator repair, and web developer. I thought, “No one says they want to be a claims adjuster when they grow up.” People mentioned that they got the job through a family friend or someone in their community. Basically, they knew someone. I then thought. What if someone doesn’t know someone? Should they not be able to break into these careers?
And I thought, I could be that friend. I searched up NoDegree.com and put an inquiry in. A few days later, I got a response back and negotiated. I called 2 buddies and pitched the idea. We bought the domain for $1,520.
From Idea to Reality I spent a couple of years doing research with whatever free time I had. It was just learning about entrepreneurship, business, SEO, and other topics that would help us in the future. Eventually we incorporated and started to get the ball rolling. We used a law firm to help us with the process. I would have probably used a small accounting firm if I were to do it again.
Attracting Customers I started networking on LinkedIn. I gave free resume reviews to people. I created content aimed at job seekers. I let people know this is what I did. I did a lot of resumes for free. Eventually I started getting referrals. As I grew my account, I got more business. Since I have been doing it for years, I get regular business from referrals.
Overcoming Challenges in Starting the Business I have made a lot of mistakes. If I were to do it over, I would have waited to quit my job. I am still paying the price of not having any income for 15 months. I had issues with business partners who weren’t pulling their weight. We had disagreements and parted ways. I even got 2 jobs along the way (not at the same time). I got fired from both of them. It’s tough managing a business and a full time job. I’ve had some good months. And I have had some bad months. I have had clients who secured raises in the $100K+ range who didn’t pay the remainder of their bill. Entrepreneurship makes you value the people that support you and makes you bitter towards the people who screw you over.
Costs and Revenue My biggest costs are the workers I have. I have a podcast editor and an online business manager. I was making money doing resumes. I eventually expanded to include job search strategy, interview prep, LinkedIn profiles, and salary negotiation. I also started recruiting. At one point, I did less work for NoDegree because I had another virtual event business that was making money. We hit over a million in sales in that business. That business took a hit when in person events came back. I then went back to doing resumes. I started off charging $300-$500 for resumes. Now I charge double that. I typically spend 5-6 hours with clients. I am also making more money through online courses. My business recently started recruiting for companies so that has opened up another revenue stream. For 2023 and 2024, revenue has remained flat. However from 2022 to 2023, I had 100% growth in revenue. In 2019, the company lost money. We had small expenses and barely had revenue. Starting in Jan 2020, I started getting regular resume clients. The revenue was around $4K-$5K a month. It was sable for most of 2020 and grew from there.
A Day in the Life I don’t have typical workdays; I have typical workweeks. Since I work based on my clients' schedules, my work is scattered throughout the week. I typically engage in 2-3+ hour sessions with clients, with anywhere between 1 to 3 of these sessions per day. Some days, I spend over 12 hours writing resumes in front of my clients. In between, I manage to comment on LinkedIn and fit in networking calls, as well as meetings with my business partners, often scheduled for 10pm or later. Additionally, I aim to record 1-3 podcast episodes per week, although sometimes I fall behind and need to catch up.
I usually check my email and LinkedIn inbox around 1-3am, which can take up 1-2+ hours daily. Occasionally, messages and emails accumulate, requiring several hours of catch-up time. As I am not a morning person and struggle with Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder (DSPD), waking up before 12pm is challenging for me. Despite this, due to work demands, I occasionally find myself working on resumes as early as 9am, though I try to avoid this as it quickly wears me out. Networking calls typically take place between 10pm-2am, as I often connect with individuals from the West Coast or around the world during these hours. Given my preferences and natural rhythm, I find it more manageable to work on resumes at 2am rather than 9am, as that's just how I'm wired.
The Vision for NoDegree Inc My eventual goal is to compete with LinkedIn, Monster, Indeed, and other popular job boards. I understand that achieving this will take a considerable amount of time. Furthermore, I am committed to never seeking VC funding for my company; instead, I will maintain a bootstrapped approach. For me, the mission holds greater significance than monetary gain. I am fully aware that this endeavor may span 15 to 20 years or more, and I am prepared for the long journey ahead.
Guiding Principles for Entrepreneurial Success Build the runway first. I would have been much further along if I had some savings to start with. I always struggled just to stay afloat. Once I got a job, I was able to raise my prices with no issues. If I were to go back, I would have waited until I started making revenue on a regular basis before quitting. It took me 15 months to start making money after quitting my job. There were some things I wanted to do, but I couldn’t take the risks I wanted to because I couldn’t afford the downside scenarios. Also, make sure to choose your business partners wisely. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. Set expectations and be ready to have tough conversations. I would have done things so much differently. I thought everyone was ready to commit like I was and make the sacrifices I made. For some people, the business is a hobby. For me, it’s my life. Thankfully, I have some great business partners now, and I wouldn’t be making the progress I am without them.
