After Luke's Season 5 retrospective, I decided to make a ranking of my own.
All of these are my opinions. I don't expect anyone to agree with me, especially on a season as divisive as this.
Episode Ranking (From Favorite to Least Favorite, start at the bottom):
  1. Sing a Song of Patrick - 10/10: ♪TWINKLE TWINKLE PATRICK STAR; I MADE MYSELF A SANDWICH; MY MOMMY NAMED IT FRED; IT TASTES LIKE BEANS AND BACON... THIS SONG IS OVER EXCEPT FOR THIS LINE: YOU WIN THIS ROUND, BROCCOLI!!♪ Ok, this may be my favorite, but Spy Buddies is a very close second for me. The song is unironically better than most modern songs in my opinion. The reason this is my favorite is because of its moral of there being people who like your work and others who don't. Not to mention the visual gags and reaction humor here give Something Smells a run for its money. It honestly deserves its divisive reputation in an already very divisive season.
  2. Spy Buddies - 10/10: If you thought this season couldn't be a good one after a botched start with Waiting and Fungus Among Us, this one literally blows everything out of the water. The spy stuff is so awesome here too. What would you do if you could fire a laser out of your butt? Add in comedy on the level seen in Seasons 2 and 3, and you have what is one of the best episodes of not just Season 5, but of the entire series.
  3. Krabs à la Mode - 10/10: This episode is simply fantastic. Coming from a place where it doesn't even snow, I love these types of stories. I probably shouldn't because for those who deal with snow know how much of a pain in neck it is. The creativity, humor and visuals make this episode such a COOL experience. Fun Fact: This episode taught little kid me that there are numbers below zero.
  4. Roller Cowards - 10/10: For those who are terrified of going on roller coasters, this'll definitely encourage you to face that fear. The storyboard directors did their research by taking a trip to Disneyland and putting in elements from that to make Glove World feel more like an authentic theme park. Similar to the trilogy in Season 4, it explores how close Sponge and Pat's friendship is, and there's strong comedy.
  5. Blackened Sponge - 10/10: You know those "If you laugh, you lose" videos on YouTube? Try doing that with this episode. I bet dollars to donuts you'll lose. Seriously, the ways SpongeBob makes up how he got his black eye are so hysterical. I could say more, but it's better if you see for yourself.
  6. SpongeBob vs. The Patty Gadget - 10/10: Here we have a story about man versus machine. It isn't much, but now the theme is very routine. Ok, you know what? I'll stop with the rhyming before you think it's Dr. Seuss who's writing. All that aside, jokes, a great story and a relevant theme for these days make this the best short of the season.
  7. The Battle of Bikini Bottom - 10/10: This is probably the best use of gross-out in this season, and more time is dedicated to the Sponge vs Pat fight than in Snowball Effect. If you were entertained by this, you'll be blown away by a certain episode in Season 6 with a similar premise to this...
  8. The Inmates of Summer - 10/10: Everyone remembers this one because of the warden character. R. Lee Ermey of Full Metal Jacket fame gives a spectacular performance. Still, the episode isn't without its moments. For those who hated the songs in Atlantis SquarePantis, the "Together" song is a breath of fresh air for you.
  9. The Two Faces of Squidward - 9/10: OMG HANDSOME SQUIDWARD WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Ok, that aside, the rest of the episode is great, and what Breath of Fresh Squidward should have been more like. I don't have much else to say other than I love this episode.
  10. 20,000 Patties Under the Sea - 9/10: The three main formulas of each episode merged into one episode. Strange how we have rarely ever seen submarines as a way of travel in this show. Also, I can't talk about this one without bringing up the scene where Plankton roasts an entire family on an open fire.
  11. Friend or Foe - 9/10: Y'all are probably getting sick of this, but more lore! One of the reasons why it's a 9 instead of a 10 is because I like ten more episodes more than this and it's not without its faults, such as Krabs and Plankton becoming enemies out of nowhere, but it's still a fan favorite that I can't give it a lower rating without being cancelled. Also, first time in the show we see Karen in mobile form.
  12. New Digs - 9/10: Man, this is so relatable. Have you ever wanted to more into your school so you wouldn't be late for your classes? I have, and thankfully that never happened, as it inconveniences those who work there.
  13. Mermaid Man vs SpongeBob - 9/10: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are here, and it was only a matter of time before Plankton teamed up with them. Another funny one with the first appearance of Mobile Karen... with arms.
  14. The Krusty Plate - 9/10: SpongeBob vs A Spot that won't come off of a plate. It's simple, yet so funny because of how it escalates.
  15. The Donut of Shame - 9/10: Patrick having a guilty conscience? This is pretty much the inverse of the Pink Purloiner from the previous season, and just like it, it has great jokes that all land.
  16. Pest of the West - 8/10: YEEHAW, more SquarePants family lore! Ok, this western is clichéd to hell and back, but it has its charms and humor.
  17. The Krusty Sponge - 8/10: Aaron Springer, welcome back! Anyway, this is probably the most meta and self-aware the main show has been, and seems like a precursor to those " portrayed by SpongeBob" videos on YouTube.
  18. Slimy Dancing - 8/10: SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward in a dancing competition. Not much to say here, it funny and engaging. First of two times they show an epilogue, for those who care.
  19. Money Talks - 8/10: Mr. Krabs befriends the concept of capitalism and they want to be spent. Good episode all around, and the Flying Dutchman appearing is always welcome.
  20. Goo Goo Gas - 8/10: This episode is so stupid and written out-of-order, but it's hilarious, so who cares?
  21. The Original Fry Cook - 7/10: More Krusty Krab lore? This one's good, and gives out more life lessons. I like how Squidward had a wig in the flashback. Kinda makes sense now why he didn't laugh at SpongeBob's wig back in Wigstruck.
  22. Bucket Sweet Bucket - 7/10: Hey, Plankton's renovating the Chum Bucket, except no, he's using this to distract the Sponge, Starfish and Octopus while he tries to steal the formula. But there are some funny bits here and there that keep me from losing interest.
  23. Boat Smarts - 7/10: This episode is actually good once you kick the "SqUiDwArD tOrTuRe PoRn" argument into a bottomless pit. I actually see this as a fact that the safest drivers aren't safe, especially from reckless drivers.
  24. Picture Day - 7/10: The only time we see Mrs. Puff's Boating School in the entire season. The whole episode is fine, funny and based on Dani Michaeli's daughter's bad picture day in preschool.
  25. Rise and Shine - 7/10: Ever wanted to know what Patrick's mornings are like? Well, this is it. Pretty funny, too.
  26. To Save a Squirrel - 7/10: Don't let the title fool you, this one's actually about Sponge and Pat trying to eat each other... at least it's entertaining.
  27. Banned in Bikini Bottom - 6/10: More Krusty Krab episodes... *yawn* I like how this is a parody of Prohibition and there are a couple of jokes, but otherwise, it's decent.
  28. Night Light - 6/10: I used to like this one... when I was younger. This isn't bad at all. The last couple of minutes are rather messy, (what is Luke Skywalker of all people doing here?) but it's fine.
  29. Atlantis SquarePantis - 6/10: GODDAMMIT, WASTED POTENTIAL! But seriously, this episode does have a bad reputation among the cartoon community and I can see why, but if it was made as a TV Movie instead of an 11-minute episode without the Nickelodeon executives butting in, most of the problems wouldn't be there. All that said, the story is lackluster, but the visuals are eyecandy, no one acts out of character, some decent comedy is sprinkled in here and there and those, combined with the Patchy segments, make up for the flaws. This simply needed more time in the oven.
  30. Le Big Switch - 6/10: I do like the exchange concept and this is the only time we hear Pearl in this season. I would say see, but she only appears in a phone call. I can't remember anything else.
  31. Stanley S. SquarePants - 6/10: More SquarePants family lore? Cool. Oh, wait he screws up everything. At least there are some jokes. I like how Squidward hightailed out of the episode the instant he saw Stanley. "THERE'S TWO OF THEM?!"
  32. SpongeHenge - 6/10: I am very mixed on this one. I do like the concept, but it could've been funnier.
  33. BlackJack - 6/10: I like seeing more of SpongeBob's family, but why is BlackJack so tiny at the end? Did he get size reduction surgery so he could fit in the prison cells easier?
  34. A Flea in her Dome - 5/10: The only major Sandy episode in the season. Whatever. Some chuckle-worthy bits here and there. A flea giving birth... Uh... I didn't need to see that.
  35. Good Ol' Whatshisname - 5/10: What's it to ya? I don't remember anything from this one.
  36. Breath of Fresh Squidward - 4/10: This isn't how to do a role-reversal story. At least SpongeBob tries to apologize after he makes Squidward leave, and I find Patrick and SpongeBob becoming Squidward at the end stupid but funny. Pat Hearts Squid is a better version of this.
  37. Pat no Pay - 4/10: Patrick screws up tasks after he can't pay for his meal. At least it's short.
  38. Waiting - 4/10: Okay, boring episodes like these aren't that bad because there's less bad material to talk about. SpongeBob = Selfish Asshat, but at least there's a couple of funny bits here and at least Squidward helps him in the end.
  39. To Love a Patty - 3/10: In my opinion, this is the first episode that feels... wrong. And more unpleasant gross-out... and SpongeBob killing clams (I highly doubt one of them was Junior, but I digress). At least there are jokes here and I have an embarrassing secret about this episode I do not wish to share. LMAO
  40. Fungus Among Us - 2/10 (Almost a 3/10): The only thing funny about this episode is its title; Just remove Fungus. Joking aside, while this episode is gross, my main gripe with the episode is that there are barely any jokes, but at least the story barely functions. If I'm being honest, Kwarantined Krab from Season 12 did this concept way better. It doesn't help that this episode led to people assuming that the entire post-movie era is all gross-out.
  41. What Ever Happened to SpongeBob? - 1/10 (Almost a 2/10): The title kinda sums up the episode, huh? The only parts I like are the battle with the Bubble Poppin' Boys (They deserved more screentime), Patrick casually lifting an entire road in one scene and Squidward throwing away his brain at the end. Those aside, the episode's story is so messy. It's too mean-spirited (Squidward and Mr. Krabs aren't as affected by this as much as Patrick and Sandy though) with no emotional buildup which makes the conflict feel unnatural. Also, SpongeBob getting amnesia makes the story fall apart if you think about it, because if he can't remember anything, specifically his friends lashing out at him which was his motive for running away in the first place, and it doesn't change his personality either, so what was the point? At least Sandy, Patrick and Mr. Krabs realize the error of their ways even if it took them reading SpongeBob's note to do so and it isn't the worst thing in the world.
Season Overall - 7/10: This used to be my favorite season as a little kid... But not anymore. The quality feels so turbulent. This season actually feels very different from Season 4, when a lot of people clump that and this season together. It feels more like a transition from the first four seasons to the so-called "dark era" of Seasons 6-9A. That makes more sense because a lot of the problems that plague those seasons started here after a couple of them were mostly laying dormant since Season 2. I still like the season in spite of all its flaws.

We materialised in a shop-front alcove, with a solid concrete wall to my right and a panelled wooden display wall behind glass to my left.
“Keep going,” Rubin said in my ear.
Not sure why he was being so insistent, I nevertheless strode forward as if I knew where I was going, and in just a few steps, the presence of multiple lanes of New York City traffic swept over me. Four lanes, all facing the same way, meant we were on one of the main arterial streets like Fifth Ave or Park Ave. ‘Zara’, a clothes boutique on the other side of the street did nothing to narrow the field any for me.
Not that it mattered. My point with this deductive reasoning was that neither of those streets had curbside parking.
Yet, sure enough, Dad's SUV was on the other side of the sidewalk in the closest lane of traffic, waiting for the lights to change. “Get in, quick!” Rubin ordered.
This wouldn’t be the first time I jumped into an illegal ‘traffic-light-parked’ car, and I raced for the back door, swinging it open and diving inside just as the lights changed. The door ‘magically’ shut itself behind me as I straightened up in my seat and took in Kulon behind the wheel and Gerry in the seat to my right.
“Hey, Angel,” I said, leaning forward to give her a quick kiss. “Missed you.”
“How’d it go with—er—your uncle?” Gerry asked, struggling with the normality of me having met with her god.
“Wanna put your seatbelt on back there, Sam?” Kulon chuckled, glancing at me in the rearview mirror as we moved forward across the intersection.
“It went better than I thought,” I admitted, then grinned. “I even got a really cool old-school bomber jacket out of it.” I saw her cringe and giggled evilly. “And you can’t hate on it, because it was literally a present from God himself.”
She clenched her hands into loose fists and pressed the heels of her palms to her temple. “I-I can’t even…” she finally stammered, and my giggle morphed into a full-blown cackle.
“I’ll show you when we get home. I don’t think you’ll hate it. It’s really nice and super authentic.” I then turned my attention to Kulon. “And dude! That has got to be soooo handy,” I said, gesturing back to where I’d jumped in the car. I was blown away by how easily it would be to catch people like that, just by realm-stepping the second a car was held up at lights. No guesswork. Not even coordinates. Just knowing.
“It has its moments,” Kulon agreed. “So, are we heading home?”
“Yes, please. The guys want to go out to Angus’ place to play some more ball this afternoon, but if I don’t get some home time in with Gerry between now and then, I won’t be going anywhere.”
The trip back to the apartment was quick, with Rubin vanishing as fast as he appeared once we had the building in sight. And with him on hand to pull back the guys any time we needed them, Kulon and Quent both stayed with the car and drove away together once Gerry and I were inside.
Of course, my luck just wasn’t playing nice with me today, for I knew the second I set foot in the apartment and saw Dad rise purposefully from his chair just inside the living room that having fun-time with Gerry wasn’t in my immediate future.
“I need a word with you, Sam,” he said, stepping between the sofa and the coffee table to give Gerry access to the rest of the apartment (with Dad standing in the doorway, it was as if it had been walled off).
“Daaaad,” I moaned, not really caring at this point what he wanted. After the morning I’d had, I needed some real Robbie-food and an hour or four in bed with my girl … minimum!
“Now, Sam.” His tone changed when he looked at Gerry and added, “We won’t be long, sweetheart.”
Not that it mattered. His initial bark had taken all my attention, and I felt my heart clench in my chest, wondering what else I’d done wrong. Not even Uncle YHWH had yelled at me, and I’d accidentally screwed with a couple of his worshippers. I couldn’t think of anything to warrant that, and as I processed the possibilities and came up blank, I barely felt Geraldine’s kiss to my cheek. “I’ll go and do some light reading in the bedroom,” she said, slipping out of my arms and making her way past Dad with a nod.
A few seconds later, I heard our bedroom door open and close, and I looked at Dad like he’d kicked a puppy. “Was that really necessary?”
“Would I have done it if it wasn’t?” Dad countered, and I had to remember who I was talking to. Between my run-in with Tucker’s people and my conversation with Uncle YHWH, I was being bolder than I had any right to be.
I forced myself to relax. “Sorry. It’s been a rough morning already.” I rubbed my chest again because, contrary to what anyone says, being tasered sucked, even if I did heal from it almost instantly.
Dad immediately frowned. “What happened? I thought you were visiting Gerry’s father for breakfast.”
“We were … I mean we did.” So much else had happened, and I didn’t feel like going into all of it. And since he was standing to one side, I headed into the kitchen, dropping my shoulder low to avoid his half-hearted grab on my way through.
I stopped at the plate warmer and was miffed at its empty state. My next port of call was the divine box Robbie called Voila. I remembered him telling me how I had to know what was in there for it to work (that, and how Charlie had scared the crap out of him yesterday morning when she’d told him the box was empty), but this was also Robbie, and he always had what we wanted ready to go. I brought to mind the one thing that would tide me over until lunch. The same thing that had been missing from Tucker’s table.
Just as I’d hoped, when I lifted the lid, an egg-filled baguette with bacon and cheese was waiting for me on a single sandwich plate. “Ye-essss,” I hissed in victory, lifting out the plate and taking the biggest bite I could manage without choking myself. “Thank you, Robbie, wherever you are! I love you!” My words were utterly muffled, but he wasn’t here, so it didn’t matter.
“Their food not to your liking?” Dad asked with an amused smirk.
“The company was challenging,” I answered evasively once I’d chewed enough to swallow. I then went over to the fridge and dug out the jug of freshly squeezed mango juice that I could never get enough of. With both items in my hands now, I was happy.
“Don’t even,” Dad warned when I instinctually lifted the jug to my lips.
“Hmmh?” The sound would’ve been an innocent ‘huh’, except I’d clamped my lips closed like that had never been my plan and put the jug on the island on the way to get a cup. With the dishwasher closer, I opened the door and grabbed one of the glasses from the second shelf. I then nudged the door shut with my shin and slid into Boyd’s seat, dragging the rest of my prizes over to me.
“So, what’s the family crisis?” I asked, pouring myself a drink but keeping the jug within easy reach. Wow, I really do use that word a lot, don’t I? I took a deep swallow to clear my throat, sighed, and then returned for another huge bite of my baguette.
“My youngest brother, Barris, our Mystallian God of the Hunt, has learned about you.”
Oh, for frig’s sake! I lowered the baguette and sat back in Boyd’s chair, my full focus once more on Dad. “Okay,” I answered cautiously, torn between frustration and annoyance. The other word choice that sprang to mind was a sarcastic ‘really’, which would probably require someone picking out an urn for my remains.
Dad shook his head and raised one hand with flared fingers. “It’s nothing bad.” He then pointed at my plate. “Finish your sandwich first.”
My next mouthfuls were maybe a third of the first two, and I might as well have been eating tyre rubber for all the enjoyment I was getting out of it. “How much does he know about me?” I asked between bites.
Dad moved to stand beside me at the corner of the island. “He knows you’ve almost graduated college. He knows there was animosity between your mother and me that’s since been resolved, and he knows about the pregnancy now.”
Now, the baguette felt like a rock in my gut. “Great.”
He slid into Lucas’ seat and curled a hand around my forearm near the elbow, anchoring me in place. “Sam, I said it’s okay. He’s on our side.”
I squinted. A lot of people were making that claim lately and I wasn’t sure I believed it anymore. “What does that mean, exactly?”
Dad met my stare squarely, and I was always amazed at how easily he could do that. “He knows the dangers to your mother, so he’s going to run interference on the family for us until after the babies are born. Despite the fact that it’ll put him in the same crosshairs with the rest of our family as us when they find out he knew, he’s going to do it anyway. He only asks one thing in return.”
I barely restrained my eye-roll. “Of course he does.”
Dad’s face morphed into a dark scowl, and his grip tightened painfully. “You will show your uncle the respect he deserves,” he warned.
I dropped my eyes to his waist; so not up for this. “Yes, sir.”
Dad’s intake for breath was both loud and frustrated. He kicked the leg of the chair I was sitting on for good measure, and when my gaze snapped to his, he was pointing two fingers of his free hand at his own eyes. “That’s right, boy. Right here. Nowhere else. Not there … not there … not way over there.” He pointed to three random locations in the apartment before returning to their original spot before his eyes. “Right here. Always. You get me?”
For some reason, Dr Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham started rolling through my brain, and I was quite proud of myself that I didn’t smirk or even blink. “Yessir.”
He didn’t get any calmer. “Okay …” he finally said, after a few seconds that was—who knew how long for him if he internalised to settle down— “I know we’ve only touched lightly on this before, but I need you to lift your game before we meet with your uncle, starting with stripping the words ‘sir’ and ‘ma’am’ from your vocabulary. I know your stance on human manners, and I’ve accepted your decision and will support it when it comes up with the others. That said, even the humans hardly ever use those two servitude titles anymore, and you can’t afford to appear weak in front of our family. Okay?”
Dad was compromising. I knew the family wouldn’t agree with my use of manners, but Dad was willing to back that, and to me, it was the more important of the two. “I’ll try,” I said because I couldn’t say for sure if I’d succeed without premonition, and that one wasn’t in my wheelhouse.
Ha, I made a divine funny.
So, why aren’t I laughing?
Probably because I still hadn’t heard what Uncle Barris wanted in exchange for his cooperation. It couldn’t be my head on a pike, as neither of my parents would go for that. But what?
“He wants to meet you, Sam, at a destination of your choosing and he’s agreed not to come here looking for you so long as that request is met. He hasn’t even asked for this address.”
“He’s the god of hunting, Dad. Hunting me down would be a cakewalk for someone like him.”
“True, except he’s promised not to go there unless it’s an emergency. You’re his nephew, Sam. A nephew he knew nothing about until last night. All he wants to do is meet you, and given the circumstances, I don’t think that’s too much to ask, do you?”
“How did he find out?” I asked instead of answering.
Dad’s expression soured. “Helen Portsmith. Apparently, she turned up at his gym last night with her usual spiel; only this time, your uncle put it together correctly and came looking for me for real answers. I told him about you and your mother. I told him our secrets.”
Something about the way he worded that… “As opposed to what?”
“I still haven’t mentioned Robbie or his connection to Yitzak. Nor have I mentioned the true gryps living with us, except for Tiacor, who’s there for your mother.”
I was starting to put this together. “Okay, so when we meet, no mention of Robbie as a cousin, or that he has a food innate, or that Yitzak and Collette know about him.” I got the feeling learning that we had true gryps in the household wouldn’t really amount to much, as they could be anywhere they wanted to be all over the world. It was their world as much as ours.
“Exactly.”
“What about Clefton and Nick? They’ve been here and met us too.”
“Mention them only if you want to get them into trouble for not outing you from the very beginning. Same with Nuncio.”
Well, that’s a hard ‘no’. “Maybe Cuschler?”
Dad scowled again. “There’s no bad blood between us anymore, right?” he asked, cocking an eyebrow warningly.
I sighed. Spoilsport. “Fine. But what about Fisk and the girls … and Najma?” It wasn’t that I’d forgotten my nephew, just that my brother and sisters rolled off the tongue first. “Danika’s been here, and Najma tracked me down at school before everyone else had met me. Even Fisk has popped in from time to time to touch base.”
“Barris knows they knew, and he understands why they’ve kept it quiet. Nothing’s going to happen until the reunion, and even then, maybe nothing if your mother still hasn’t given birth.”
I pushed my half-eaten baguette away and pressed my forehead to the island. “Everybody knows a little bit,” I griped. “How in the world am I meant to keep tabs on who knows what?”
Dad’s grin made me want to kick him the way he’d kicked my chair. “What do you think internalising is for? Remembering whatever we want is literally our jam.”
“I s’pose.” But combing through the details at every turn still seemed like an awful lot of effort, even if that process did seem instantaneous to everyone else. It wasn’t to us.
Dad reached past me and brought back my baguette. “Finish your sandwich. You can go as you are. Your uncle runs a gym downtown, so he’s not exactly at his best either.”
I stared at him in horror. “We’re going right now?”
“Why not now?”
Because I just got back from seeing Uncle YHWH! “I dunno. I mean, it’s too soon, don’t you think?”
I don’t know how else to describe it, but Dad’s expression turned … parental. “And when would a good time be for you with your hugely busy schedule now that school has wrapped up?” he asked like I was an idiot.
I gave a nervous, shrugging roll of my shoulders. “I understand there’s this get-together happening at the end of the year…”
I kinda expected the cuff to the back of my head and tried not to snicker when it happened.
“Don’t be a smartass. Finish your sandwich, and we’ll go. This won’t take long.”
With nothing else for it, I did as I was told, leaving the empty plate and cup on the sink since the dishwasher hadn’t been emptied. “I’m so glad I got a say in this…” I muttered quietly under my breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing.”
I have no idea why I thought we’d at least use the front door to leave. Probably because most people did. But this was Dad, and we were going to meet his brother, and he clearly didn’t want me to have the chance of wriggling out of it.
So without warning, he slapped his hand on my right shoulder and shoved me forward, realm-stepping away with me as I stumbled to keep my footing.

I often see demotivated guys here. Some of them drop out of school and NEET because they see no purpose in striving to IMPROOOOOOOOVE BRO!
I don’t blame you guys at all. I’m a short Asian guy with profound autism. Believe me, I know how it feels.
But there are some guys who also want to find motivation. Some know that even if material wealth fails to bring you equitable treatment in society and in life, at least money will be able to buy a comfortable hermitic life away from society.
But everyone has a breaking point. Many of these guys unfortunately fail to find motivation despite their best efforts.
So this post is for you.
I can’t tell you how to find motivation, but I can tell you how I found mine.
I’ve been a functional nihilist since age 2 because I’ve been bullied all my life for my autism. Real-life friendship, teen love, and romance have always been foreign concepts to me.
Uncontrollable handflapping, rocking back and forth, and jerking my body led to kids calling me a restart and “special ed” as early as kindergarten.
This was on top of the usual “chi/g c*ong” that every Asian kid got called.
So I wrote.
What else did you expect? I’m 30. I grew up in the 90s in an Asian immigrant family. Did you really fucking think boomer Asian parents would ever let me watch Cartoon Network?
Now, even though I could barely form sentences and had significant speech delays, writing was my escape.
I wrote so much that I won the department’s English award at high school graduation. The dean recommended that I get an English PhD in my freshman year of college.
But when my parents found out, they tried to beat me up. I was 18 and fought back, but they threatened to kick me out and make me homeless if I didn’t major in “something useful.”
The summer after freshman year, I was heavily drinking, doing dr*gs, and contemplating life.
I realized that if I majored in English, my autism would be sufficiently debilitating that the PR and interpersonal networking required to market my writing and make any kind of decent income would be impossible without making me want to selfyeet every single day.
Plus, between my race and my monotone, everyone thought English was my second language by default. It hurt every single time because I’d written so much material.
I changed my major, stopped self-destructing, started eating healthfully, and worked hard not because I wanted to, but because I realized that the alternative was gonna be much worse.
In other words, I essentially blackmailed myself into getting my STEM degree.
I didn’t need booze and dr*gs anymore. Fruit was enough. Life had just shoved a nuclear blackberry down my throat anyway.
My blackberry phone with Brick Breaker was evidently an insufficient cope.
In all seriousness, I eventually got to live the material life I had wanted after years of studying and careergrinding (that’s another story in itself). I now work from home, and I’m retiring in 4 years.
But girls still come up to me and call me a creep because of my uncontrollable rocking and handflapping.
Just like old times.
My final piece of advice to you is this: know that some things never change no matter how hard you work.
Like the fact that, once in a blue moon, I still write late at night, just like I used to in high school. I often step away from the keyboard and word processor to wistfully wonder through tear-blurred midnight darkness what might have been…if only….
Don’t be a free agent in life.

2024.05.05 22:18 SonicRift91 Warnings: Our Experience with Dock Pro + Chilipad

Hello everyone! I thought I'd write a post here explaining the whole journey my spouse and I have been on with the Sleep.me Chilipad and Dock Pro, both to see if we're the only ones having such drastic issues and to caution others who may be considering buying one.
TL;DR - every piece of the set we've purchased has been replaced multiple times by Sleep.me and we continue to have issues with leaks. While the customer service has been great and they've always sent us new items, we're just so tired of contacting them every couple months to get another piece of it replaced. We've given up and have purchased the Eightsleep Pod 3 instead.
We purchased the Dock Pro + Chilipad dual unit for a California King bed in May of 2022 (almost exactly 2 years ago). We previously owned the Chilipad Oolers, and while they worked okay, it was time for an upgrade. Initially, we were over the moon with how well the new Dock Pro system worked. I'm a hot sleeper, so when we had the Ooler, mine would be set to as low as possible the entire night every night, and I was incredibly pleased that these could actually get too cold for me, even in summer. Unfortunately, our joy was short-lived, as the first of the dock units started leaking just 3 months later, despite following the instructions to a T (distilled water only, system cleaner added at set intervals, etc.). The dock units were backordered, so after waiting about 2 months for them to ship a replacement, we were back up and running again. Until the exact same thing happened. Fast-forwarding to today, we've been sent a total of 3 or 4 replacement dock units and 5 replacement Chilipad mattress covers (one of which was the wrong size 😂), all because of leaks. The docks would somehow back-flow when the unit was off and overflow the reservoir - we even tried elevating it above the mattress and even that did not fully solve the problem), and the pad would just...randomly develop a leak for seemingly no reason. I'm still not sure why they would just start leaking, and Sleep.me themselves have provided no explanation as to what we may be doing different or wrong. No rhyme or reason that we could discover. The leaks were always in different places and there was no clear "event" that would happen. We just received our 5th Chilipad mattress cover about 2 weeks ago (we asked for a new dock and a new pad, but they only sent us the pad, so the dock is still intermittently leaking), and just yesterday it started leaking again while my spouse was sitting on the bed working on their computer and the unit was off. Soaked all the way through from the mattress pad through the comforter.
Needless to say, this was the last straw for us. We wouldn't have even lasted this long if the product wasn't so incredible when it was working and if the customer service wasn't as good as it is. I'm not sure if we have just gotten incredibly unlucky or what, but we finally decided to cut our losses and just ditch the whole system, and have just purchased the Eightsleep Pod 3. I just got tired of constantly worrying about whether the dock was going to soak the carpet or I was going to wake up in a puddle, so I'm truly hoping the Pod will work better and without leaks. Feel free to ask questions or provide ideas!

this about 15 or so years ago, but i was reading about cringe moments in an article and it brought back this moment.
i was 16, and a junior in high school doing a favor for my BIL who not only taught at my school, but was also my teacher.
i had a free period due to being considered a senior and stopped by my BILs class to turn in a late worksheet. BIL asked if i would drop off a packet (class work) on the other side of the school that a student left behind. i figured why not, since i was leaving for the day anyways and it was on the way to the school parking lot.
im down the hall from the classroom and i hear the teacher ask about abe lincoln's famous speech or whatever. im nearly in the doorway when a kid in the front row goes, "ffffffff." my stupid ass pops in the room and shouts, "uh-oh REMIX."
it was the speech therapy class.
the teacher looked like he wanted to throat punch me, and the kid, peter, just sank in his chair. i felt like absolute ass caked in shit, esp since everyone knew petey was always bullied for his stutter
turns out the teacher would sort of think outside the box and have his students phrases and whatnot in speech therapy, ig to help them.
i apologized profusely and explained the reasoning behind my comment but Peter wouldn't look at me and the teacher just snatched the packet out of my hand.
i messaged my bil and told him what happened and he asked if it's my life's goal to maintain an iq that is the equivalent of a broken electrical cord that's still plugged in.
i did talk to peter about a month later on aim and apologized again but also stated that i didn't know it was the speech therapy class or that it was him talking at first until i looked inside the class and saw him, at which point it was too late. peter accepted the apology bc he spoke to a mutual friend who vouched that i wasn't a bully, just the dumb and awkward pasty mexican girl with sideburns.
TL;DR: accidentally made fun of a kid with a stutter, he accepted my apology and i still cringe when i think about it

This is long, but please, please read it, I need someone to see me. I posted this to another subreddit too.
This is my story. Today I speak my truth.
TW// Sexual assault, goes into detail about my assult.
I was molested from ages to 4 to possibly 6. All by a man, a older cousin (around his 20's?) , who was distantly related to me, who was also homeless at the time. My extended family had taken him in, let him stay at their house for whatever reason.
I used to visit since I was maybe around 4 years old, pre kindergarten. When I started school, everyday my grandma, my grandmas sister, and that sisters daughter (around her 40's at the time) picked me up from school and went to their house. I had some good memories there, I even made friends with the kids next door.
This, man. Little kid me, I liked this cousin, I don't know why, I thought he was cool. He often let me play games on his consoles, I would go in the backyard with him.
However, my grandma, told me to not go alone in the backyard with him. She never told me why. You know, everyone as little kids never listen, they don't wanna be told what to do. So, me as a little girl, did it anyway, because she wanted to have fun with her favorite older cousin.
They still let me around him regardless, didn't stop him from taking me into the backyard alone.
One day, he took me in the backyard, behind the house. We were talking, and then I had found a piece of chalk and then, I started giggling and scribbling on the walls of the house. With him on my right, he took my free hand and started to make me touch his crotch. I looked up and he started grinning. I didn't understand what happened.
I fear, he may have done something worse. I think this because all of these memories were once suppressed memories. The instance above was remembered 3 years after the fact that it happened. I was in 4th grade, remebering what had happened to me, still not understanding.
But one of my earliest memories was when he took me in the backyard, I was about 4, before kindergarten. I remember what I wore. A white tank top with a pink butterfly in the middle, yellow and pink shorts. My mother had dressed me.
He took me in the backyard, in his tent (my grandmas sister, made him sleep in a tent in her yard because there were no rooms left) He sat me down, he was normal tickling me, then he stopped and said "I'm going to tickle you until you pee.", pulled down my shorts and you can piece what happened to me next.
This memory above, was also a suppressed memory that only resurfaced last year. I'm 16 now.
The kids I befriended above, were the neighbors. They didn't live there however, they were being babysat by their grandma since their mom was very young. Twins, boy and girl, so sweet. They were about 1 year younger than me.
I remember, I was hanging out with them infront of my relatives house, and the cousin, just came back home from somewhere, and was locking and putting away his bike. The kids say hi to him.
My grandmas sister pulled me aside, told me to not to let my friends around him because they (her and him) could "get into big trouble." Didn't say anything else.
I vaguely remember right after, my grandma whispering to her sister about him and something about a "registry" and about him not supposed to be around kids.
Years later, I realized, that meant he was a sex offender, and that I wasn't the only one he did this too, other children.
They let. me. around. a. child. predator. knowingly.
They KNEW. and did nothing about it. I feel so much anger.
They KNEW, what he did. They KNEW what kind of person he was, what he was capable of. They still let him around a child anyway, thinking it was okay. The fact that, they even housed him, took in such a disgusting person knowingly.
Last I saw him I was in maybe 4th grade, my family had saw him he was on the side of a gas station in the rain. He started crying. Wanna know what they said to him? "Don't worry, just let Jehovah forgive you." He didn't even apologize, or acknowledge the fact I was there. Didn't even look at me.
I came out to my mom recently, turns out years ago, the police department contacted her, she asked me if he touched me. I said no, because I never got that talk, what molestation was until it was far too late.
I still search for him. I look at sex offender regristies, maps, megans law so often. I can't find him. I don't really know his name specifically, because he also had a twin brother, they had rhyming names. His brother was a sweet soul, but had difficulty finding jobs because of his brothers name.
Also found out my grandma let her boyfriend sexually abuse my mom when she was little too. Always accused my mom of "taking her man away".
I can't find him. Also, last I heard he was in jail for crystal meth, I think he's out now. My mom said he was always on the run, making trouble everywhere he went. I really want to find him. Finally know his name. Some sort of closure.

Inspired after reading u/Established88 post on here.
Heya everyone! This is an incredibly long post about my life experience, and I salute you if you read all the way through. Sorry about the new account, just wanted to share my experience, but wanted a clean slate not connected to the old life to do it on.
Like most people I’d wager on here, I grew up in the religion. I had a loving set of parents, a wonderful sister, and some nice puppers, a little picture perfect life. And my family was just about a perfect, cover JW family. Just about. My sister is a regular pioneer, has been for around 10 years now, my dad is an elder in the congregation and has been for I’m sure 10+ years now as well, my mom never did too much due to her illness, and then…. There was little old me. I was always a bit of a problem child, in a way. Not with my attitude, or crime, or anything of the sort, but with… following some direction.
As you could imagine, being the son of an elder meant that I had to be Elder Jr. I was expected to be super spiritual, reach out, be an example, dress and groom proper, encourage the younger ones…. There was a mountain of expectation on me. Expectation that deep down, I knew I was never going to meet, just because something in me felt… disconnected. Growing up I went to public school, and from childhood my best friend was another JW I met in Kindergarten (we’re still friends to this day). I made other friends in school, sure, some I’d even call close, but we never really did any extracurricular things. I never got to hang out with them, always JW associates. Bad association spoils useful habits, after all.
Getting older and moving into my mid to later teens, I started to get a bit closer in my identity, at least superficially. I let myself get closer to schoolmates. There was a girl in the congregation I really adored and loved, genuinely. But she was a bit of a free spirit that would manifest in some tendencies that I’ve learned are called ‘round here as PIMO (physically in, mentally out) such as her style, her speech, and smoking weed to help with mental issues and personal struggles. My family hated her. I loved her. For the next 8 to 9 years was a struggle of trying to make a relationship work. The start of the problems came after being the teens most are, we became sexually interested and started sexting. After being suspicious and my dad extorting a confession out of me with threats of consequences and going through my personal information, things got much worse. With my mom vehemently disapproving of her, my dad berating her and I with scripture and principal about how we need to change and mature before we would ever be ready for a relationship, driving us apart and pushing her further out of the religion with their attitude and venom towards her, because how could someone who was supposed to be such an example of gods love, be so cruel and mean to someone who was a little different? And I agreed with her, I told her how I would never forgive my parents for ruining this.
This was a trend with my father. Specifically the scriptural manipulation to make any opposer feel like a proper evil, filthy sinner. And being an elder, he had the authority to really push it around. When my sister was dating her now husband, he HATED him. He tried so much to break them apart. He used the girl (who I’m going to refer to as Rosie from here) and me to get back at my mom for supporting their relationship, by “supporting” our relationship. Helping us see each other, arguing with my mother about why it was fine. We had constant “family worship meetings” with cherry-picked articles and publications to specifically prove his points. There was a point he would full on scream and swear at my sister for being alone with her partner once. I was constantly in the middle of family arguments, and as this was before I learned about my autism, caused constant breakdowns I had no clue why was happening, which I couldn’t do anything but whimper and shake while my father would yell and me and tell me how pathetic I was acting. He never apologized for this. This was also the time I severely started to disagree with his viewpoint on women and treatment of my mother. It wasn’t abusive, but I considered it neglectful, belittling, and disrespectful. We would get into arguments all the time, and he would often slap me across my face for talking back, and it was fine since “as the male of the house, he was allowed to discipline me as such”.
This was one struggle while growing up. The other, was my own identity. While the core of myself has stayed constant, I always knew from an early age I was different. I wasn’t like the other boys, the friends I made were largely women, my body was tiny and almost effeminate, I didn’t care about sports or cars, and my body hair disgusted me. But of course, the society says anything that isn’t the traditional standard is disgusting in God’s eyes. As I got older though and learned more about identity and lifestyles from having so many lgbt friends in school and living in the age of the internet where I was able to learn about things like femboys, non conforming men, non-binary people, etc., I started to secretly experiment more with myself. Trying makeup, sneaking clothes to cross dress, shaving my body hair and always wearing long clothes to hide the fact. I became very much aware that I was far more feminine than masculine, quite possibly one of the worst things given how staunchly macho manly my dad constantly was. But given the status of being an elder’s son, I had to be an example. If my hair was ever longer than several inches, it needed to be cut. If it was ever seen my legs were smooth, it was teased and I’d get the snide comments of oh are you gay or something. I began to hate my “casual” outward appearance and was desperate to be me, be pretty.
Once I moved out, things didn’t get much better. Apart from still being tracked by my phone, and berated if it was ever seen that I was around Rosie I was still beholden to all the same standards in my new congregation as my old one, due to my dad insisting he communicate with the elders there. My father was always an extremely controlling and narcissistic type, to be frank. Being moved out, however, did let me express myself more casually, spend more time with Rosie, and I made incredibly close friends with my coworkers and people outside of the religion. My friends always encouraged me to be myself, supported my dressing and grooming, and even Rosie was fine with my dressing up and dolling myself up occasionally. During this time I was still in the religion due to the difficulty it makes of cutting ties. Rosie and I were very involved still, but as she went to college and I stayed working she started drifting further out from the religion and had the support for it I didn’t, and between it and her own life stresses we started to talk less and less, to the point we hadn’t talked for a year or two after.
This was the point my mental health was really taking a dip from the stress of it, not being able to truly have an appearance I was happy with, and feeling unacceptable to God for all these reasons. Since despite all the questioning and evidence, maybe out of a fear, I still tried to hold on to some kind of belief that things were real and true. All of this came to a head in New Year’s Eve in 2022, when I begged, begged God to help me. I felt lost, alone, I hated myself, and I was desperate to hear from Rosie, or anyone. No one ever came. I felt like God left me. I covered my mirror with pages of notes about how I hated myself. I almost killed myself with a kitchen knife. I held it to my chest for so long, weighing the options.
Luckily, that night passed. Recovering from that took a long time. Rosie did talk to me a little after, had me to see a therapist, and while things were strained, there was a least a change in me. That was a turning point I truly checked out of being a Jehovah’s Witness. If Jehovah was there, was real, and cared, I would have never gone through that. I started to do more for myself, put more energy into my own hobbies. I kept up some appearances but had fun, started a hobby YouTube channel, and did a fun video skating in a maid outfit. This got found by my father somehow, and it was immediately brought to the Elder’s attention of course. All the usual council came, and only made me more disillusioned with the faith. Later on, Rosie left the Witnesses properly, and had taken a break from contact with me. At the time I never thought I’d hear back from her, so I was of course incredibly upset and hung up from it. I did meet a wonderful girl, who I’ll call Sheryl, at an anime convention, who surprise surprise, was a worldly person. We had a coffee date, and despite the stigma of worldly people, I loved every second. I stopped feeling alone, and regardless, we were both in a spot in life where each other’s company was incredibly nice to have around.
I started staying over her house, and we got more and more involved as time went on. Suddenly, a little photo I did as a joke in a Hooters outfit and full makeup came up (for the femboy Hooters meme) and my dad lost it. He was furious, talking about how my mother was crying, I needed to talk to the Elders, and I needed to get myself in order because of how shameful I was. I never replied to him, until he coerced me into it telling me it was sent by my best friend. After arguing and him insisting I meet in person, I refused because I knew the power he held over me from so much of the trauma I grew up with. Furious from it, he cut me off from everything. Being 24 then I was still on my family’s insurance and such, so I was cut off from everything, and he became purely business treating me like a random “wordly” person he’d meet. I was stunned by how fast he cut me off and disowned me.
After that, I knew there was no place for me in the religion. If even my own family wanted to treat me like a monster because I expressed myself a little, I didn’t even want to be a part of that family. After things were wrapped up from my father, I stopped responding to any messages he sent, I stopped going to meetings. I grew out my hair and started being more true to me. I moved in with Sheryl, and coincidentally Rosie contacted me after having felt a need to, that something bad happened. We laughed and bonded some more over having left the religion, and have a healthy, friendly relationship and occasionally muse over who and what we used to be. Sheryl is incredibly supportive of myself and always encourages me to dress how I want, helping me with makeup, and is a truly amazing partner. My friends I made outside of the religion are wonderful and always check in and encourage me, and actively make efforts to spend time with me. I still do occasionally talk to my two best friends from the religion, one I have broken the news to, my childhood friend. He accepts me for who I am, since he’s essentially my brother. My other friend I haven’t told yet, but I do plan to break the news soon since he’s moving back out. I still haven’t responded to my father, he occasionally texts me saying I hope you’re okay and not dead, acting as if he never broke and pushed me away. The rest of my family stopped checking in, whether by rumor or because I never reached out I’m unsure, but the door is always open to my sister and mother if they ever make the effort. I’m still learning about if I’m just a non-conforming male, or something more akin to non-binary or even trans. But I know I’ve grown so much. I look in the mirror, and I don’t hate what I see. I have so much true love in my life. I’m so grateful to everyone. I do believe God is real… just not the one I was told is. For everyone wondering if life is or does get better on the other side, it does. It absolutely does.
TL:DR - after learning about my non traditional gender identity and preferences, and suffering a childhood of mental and emotional abuse, I finally broke free, found support, and am living to by my authentic self.

Now that we've established what the book is about, let's take a look at The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls' rich publication and re-publication history. I promise, it's more scandalous than it sounds.

“HER SPEECH IS NOTHING, YET THE UNSHAPÈD USE OF IT DOTH MOVE THE HEARERS TO COLLECTION” (HORATIO, ACT IV SCENE 5)

As I've mentioned in the last installment, TAFWVG has been released multiple times, in multiple editions – four of them, to be precise. And I wish I was exaggerating when I say that three of those four releases have been veritable masterclasses in testing your audience's loyalty. In case you're wondering: the secret is to alter your source material in strange and unpredictable ways, while also constantly messing up on the customer service front.
Most of this installment condenses and combines these two excellent write-ups, which contain most of the receipts: TAFWVG: A History / The Bloody Crumpets: An Inconsistent History. 🔍 Anything that isn't sourced with links is in there. While there were only minor differences between the first and second pressings, the third and fourth editions came with significant alterations to the structure of the book and the story itself, notably the cast of fictional Asylum inmates... a handful of which had, in fact, been obvious avatars of EA's IRL friends and collaborators.
It turns out there are good reasons why most fiction authors don't do real-life inserts so overtly – but in EA's case, it did make sense, and was warmly embraced by fans upon release. When the book first came out, some of these people had been familiar to the fanbase for years, frequently appearing in candid pictures on EA's blog and leaving comments on the forum; some were also involved in her music and show. Recognizing that one character's name was a pun on So-and-So's username was a nice Easter egg for veteran fans, and newcomers got to learn about fandom lore; it brought the story to life and the community closer.
One side character, for instance, was named after EA's best friend from Chicago, whom many fans had had direct interactions with: she co-ran EA's online stores during the Enchant years, and acted as admin, main moderator and EA-liaison of the forum throughout its near-decade of existence.
One crazy girl who thinks she's a pirate is 100% OC... but her description and illustrations 🪞 were explicitly modeled after pictures of Bloody Crumpet Vecona (one of EA's back-up performers), who became the first stand-in pirate character 📺 in the live show. Captain Vecona was also celebrated as the “Asylum Seamstress” 🪞🔍: most of the iconic early Opheliac costumes were her design. She had a following of her own, even prior to touring with EA, for her professional costuming work and her collaborations with German photographer Angst-im-Wald. (Shitty archive link, sorry - most of those badass photoshoots seem to have been lost to time. But if you were a European goth in the mid-2000s, search your old hard drives: I promise you, you've downloaded some of those pictures.)
Inmate “Veronica”, a cabaret girl diagnosed as a nymphomaniac, was a doppelgänger of her namesake, burlesque dancer Veronica Varlow 🪞 – the ride-or-die Crumpet, whom EA often lovingly called her “husband”, saying they had been lovers in a previous lifetime. Veronica was part of every single tour post-Opheliac release and developed a solid fanbase of her own, which she maintains to this day.
Even the brave and well-mannered talking rats (oh yeah, there's talking rats in the Asylum story) were named after EA's real-life pet rodents, who had featured in glamorous photoshoots. (Slight NSFW for sideboob.)
You get the general gimmick by now: EA turns her personal life into art, which she turns into a fictional world, which she then prompts the audience to inhabit with her. The whole Asylum concept was essentially an open invitation to self-insert parasocial fanfic: “Here's this very personal world that I've created, in which I, the artist, exist as a fictional persona, alongside all these quirky inmate characters that you've seen in my stage show, and who are avatars my real-life friends. Come on in, make it your home, and populate it with your own zany Victorian alter egos.”
And it worked, to an extent: like I've said, most fans were on board before they'd even read the book, and the Asylum became “real” in that sense.
But it can get a bit disorienting to find your place in a fantasy world, when said world keeps changing based on the author's shifting feelings about her story, her target audience, and her friends... plus, you'd love to read the book, but the darn thing still hasn't shipped.

ROUNDS 1 & 2: THE HARDCOVERS

\A MINOR ADJUSTMENT\
TAFWVG was first teased in spoken-word bonus tracks 🎤 on a 2007 EP. In spring 2008, EA started reading excerpts from her upcoming book at live shows. Early excerpts from the Asylum narrative featured a character named “Jo Hee” 📺; in the story, she is a cellist from “the Orient” (love that Victorian geography) and Emily's childhood confidante.
In real life, Lady Jo Hee, Center of Happiness, was the OG Bloody Crumpet. 📺 She had been there since from the very first Opheliac show in Chicago in 2006, accompanying EA on the electric cello – the only instrumentalist ever featured in the line-up besides EA herself.
In August 2008, Alternative Magazine ran a feature about the upcoming book.🔍, teasing some of its pages. Fans were quick to spot a very sisterly picture of EA and Jo Hee 🪞, borrowed from a fan-favorite photoshoot of the two. (An aside: this specific picture also became famous in the fandom for another reason. At some point, someone made an edit replacing Jo Hee with Amy Lee from Evanescence; for a while, it kept making the rounds in alt/goth internet circuits, casual onlookers kept getting excited about it, and Plague Rats kept having to step in and disappoint them.)
Anyway. For reasons undisclosed by either party, Jo Hee quietly left the Crumpets after that tour, never to be mentioned again.
By the time the book came out in late 2009, the character of “Jo Hee” had been renamed “Sachiko”. (I guess it didn't matter whether the one non-white character in the story was meant to be Korean or Japanese.) Jo Hee's face had been edited out of the (still clearly recognizable) photograph, and eerily replaced with Nondescript_Asian_Woman_023.jpg from Shutterstock.🪞
You'd think that the switcheroo would have raised more eyebrows, or at least some awkward chuckles, among fans of an artist whose better-known lyrics include “If I Photoshop you out of every picture, I could / Go quietly, quiet - but would that do any good?”. Yet to my knowledge, it did not. Possibly because, by the time people got around to reading the book, some fans had been waiting for their copy longer than Jo Hee had been a Crumpet.
A ROCKY RELEASE
Although the book seemed just about ready for publication at the time of those 2008 readings, the initial release was delayed by technical difficulties (some data had been lost during the editing process). And then delayed some more when, a year later, EA cancelled the US leg of a tour and slammed the door on Trisol, accusing the label owner of exploitation and embezzlement (he was allegedly selling fake tickets to her shows on a phony website). In August 2009, she signed over to The End Records, and we were back in business, baby!
Not only was The Book on its way to the presses, but the long-awaited release would coincide with a “Deluxe” re-issue of Opheliac, with new cover art and bonus tracks. For $100, you could pre-order the “Ultimate Book/Album Collection”, which included the revamped album, the book, a t-shirt, a tote bag, a recipe booklet and some bonus digital downloads, to be shipped in October. Or, for a more up-close-and-personal experience, you could purchase a VIP bundle for her upcoming shows in the fall: $50 plus ticket price would get you the book, a swag bag, and a meet-and-greet. (VIP tickets were capped at 20 slots per show; from what I gather, informal interactions with fans at the merch table were becoming overwhelming on previous tours. Again: fast-growing audience.)
Alas, due to printing issues this time, the making and shipping were soon pushed back to December. VIP ticket-holders were assured, at the start of the tour, that their copies would be shipped first as soon as the books were printed, with handwritten dedications from EA. Purchasers of the “Book/Album” bundle would receive theirs shortly thereafter. This seemed like a reasonable trade-off for a minor delay, and no one was too upset. (Well, some might have been, but at that juncture in Asylum history – for reasons that will become apparent in a later installment, when we get to EA's altercations with her fans – I guess they knew better than to get mouthy about it.)
The bundles came first... and in many cases, “bundle” was a generous term, because they arrived incomplete. When the t-shirt or tote bag weren't missing, they were printed the wrong colors. Many digital download codes had to be requested via email. The book itself was beautiful, but poorly bound, typo-ridden, and missing entire pages. (This was largely fixed in the second hardcover release.)
As far as I know, everyone who complained to the distributor got their money back – and I imagine it was a nice surprise when some items showed up, inexplicably, months after they had already been refunded. But it was still a bit of a “sad trombone” moment for many loyal fans, who had to request a refund on the Ultimate Super-Cool Preorder Exclusive Bundle to purchase the book and album separately.
As for the VIP package books, those didn't start shipping until late 2010 – a whole year after the official book release, months after less invested fans had already received their non-preordered copies. Worse: none of the books were signed, much less lovingly adorned with a personalized handwritten note as EA had promised. (And had tweeted about doing during the year-long shipping delay!) After enough fans meekly expressed their intense disappointment, EA's BFF-forum-admin mailed out signed bookplates that people could stick in their book in lieu of a personalized autograph. No real explanation was given. As far as I know, this particular let-down didn't cause a mass exodus of disappointed fans – but, in the midst of other goings-on, it certainly contributed to eroding many fans' trust in EA's word.
EA TAKES ON HOLLYWOOD
The 2011 release of the largely-identical second edition was better planned and overall uneventful, which gives me time to catch you up on contemporaneous events – like the reason EA ditched the Opheliac red and went platinum blonde. 🪞
Around that time, EA got herself a supporting role and a solo number 🎵📺 in The Devil's Carnival, Darren Lynn Bousman's psychocircus-themed movie musical. (If you're scrambling to place the name: depending on what kind of deviant you are, DLB is either the guy who directed half of the Saw movies or the guy who directed Repo! The Genetic Opera.)
If you've clicked the last link: see the bad boy greaser she's dancing with at the end of the song? That's the titular “Scorpion”, played by Marc Senter, and they were totally hitting on each other while shooting this. 📝🪞 They've been an item for twelve years now, in what appears to be a loving and mutually supportive relationship, and they seem besotted with each other. That's only marginally relevant to the story, but it's nice to know that at least one nice thing worked out in all this mess.
Back to 2011. Through her friendship with DLB and the Devil's Carnival cast (a motley crew of top-shelf B-listers 🔍 that included Bill Moseley, Paul Sorvino, the chick from Spy Kids, and the clown from Slipknot), EA also made a bunch of new industry connexions. That's how she came to decide that TAFWVG was meant to be more than a book, more than a live show: it had to become... a musical. Full company, full orchestra, big names, the works. Her 2012 album, Fight Like a Girl, was written and recorded with this project in mind, with most songs narrating events from the book and EA singing as various characters – which turns love duets into finger food for Dr. Freud. 🎵
Shortly before the album release, EA announced on Twitter that the Asylum Musical was scheduled to debut in the London West End, under the direction of Bousman, in 2014. "Casting calls to be announced soon!" (They were not.)

ROUND 3: THE AUDIOBOOK

2014 came, and brought... another TAFWG re-release announcement.
But wait – this time, it was going to be an audiobook! EA had been teasing one since before the original release, so people were quite excited. (It also sounded like a more achievable goal for the calendar year than a West End debut.) In early 2014, recording was well on its way, and the 6-CD boxset was due to ship in May.
PLEASE STAND BY, YOUR ASYLUM WILL BE PROCESSED SHORTLY
First, EA discovered “a new microphone ... that, upon testing, produced a recording of far greater beauty and expressive quality”, which naturally meant the whole thing had to be re-recorded. Two month's delay. No biggie. Our girl is a perfectionist.
But our girl also had to write, coordinate and rehearse her upcoming “Asylum Experience” – an afternoon-long interactive theater event, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, which would be performed at five dates of the Vans Warped Tour in August. (It's not exactly the West End, but it's a start! 🔍) And then she had to prepare for the filming of the Devil's Carnival sequel in the fall. So, obviously, the July deadline was not met. When she finally gave an update in late 2014, the ETA was basically “we are ever so close, but the audiobook gets there when it gets there; feel free to ask for a refund if you're not along for the ride”.
And then she signed with a literary agent. TAFWVG was going to be made into a “real” book, that readers could purchase in stores for a normal price and request from their local library – big event! (More for EA, I think, than for her fans. By that point, the second edition could be purchased as a PDF, and I believe most people who pre-ordered the audiobook had already read the story.) But this involved tailoring the narrative to a more general audience, which meant portions of the book had to be re-written... which meant further delays.
...Besides, and let’s have a teacup of “honesty time” here, if the new Asylum becomes an internationally best-selling novel, not only can we enact more change for good, but the Asylum Musical takes over Broadway faster, the Asylum Movie takes over theatres faster, and YOU are all dressed up as rats/inmates in said movie, you guessed it, faster (“Asylum Audiobook Announcement from EA”📝)
Well, you know what they say in show business: if you can't make it in London, there's always New York.
As EA assured her fans, their patience would be rewarded with a brand new, professionally polished version of the story – and in due time, I guess, a role in the movie. (“Let's hope she doesn't find another new microphone!” 🐀)
From that point on, there seems to have been an ever-widening gap between EA's enthusiasm and fan expectations. When audiobook snippets 🎤.mp3) were released, many fans were unimpressed by the oddly flat, overproduced recording (turns out a microphone can be so good it's a problem! 🐀), which highlighted EA's stilted, uncanny diction and not-quite-transatlantic accent. That caught everyone off guard, because she didn't use to read like... that. Even die-hard apologists had to concede through gritted teeth that, tragically, it was giving William Shatner. (If you're curious, you can find more previews here 🎤📝, along with EA's captions.)
Fans weren't just getting irritated with the various delays and excuses: they were baffled, angry, and embarrassed. When EA clapped back “U know U can just get a refund, right? That is totally within your power to do” on social media, and it came out that requests for refunds had been getting ignored for weeks or months 🐀, seasoned fans were like “Yeah, that tracks.” The whole never-ending ordeal was just starting to feel silly.
All told, the audiobook took two years to complete, with little to no new music in the interim. Two years is a long time for a young-leaning audience! Fans who had preordered at the end of their sophomore year were graduating high school by the time it came out. Others who had been in the middle of undergrad were now looking for full-time jobs. People had gotten pregnant, given birth and potty trained, or had houses built from the ground up. Genuine ultra-fans of the book had had time to... presumably, read other books. (“I wonder how many people passed away waiting for this shitty audiobook to be finished?”)
When the audiobook came out, many long-time Plague Rats had defected, either lamenting the misguided decisions of their favorite artist, or just calling EA a money-grabbing fraud and a lying liar. And a number of patient and unbothered fans had, quite simply, grown out of their EA phase.
Your humble servant, for one, ordered the audiobook the week it went on sale, and stuck with that preorder through five address changes and two graduation ceremonies. Now, bear in mind: through all the ups and downs, even as the charm dispelled, my taste in music evolved, and my perception of EA herself changed, I never formally stopped considering myself a fan. (Mama didn't raise no quitter.) To this day, and to my profound embarrassment, I give enough of a shit that I'm taking the time to write this story at all, and that I was able to draft most of itfrom memory.(Mama didn't teach me how to prioritize.) Well, get this: I have never once listened to the audiobook. I remember unwrapping the signed boxset (minimal artwork, flimsy cardboard, no liner notes), thinking “this could have been an email”, telling myself I'd get around to it for old time's sake... and then I never did, because it was ten hours long, and I just couldn't force myself to care about that story anymore. I was not an isolated case.
In light of this, I apologize in advance for any potential errors in the following paragraphs; others listened so posers like me wouldn't have to 🔍, and I'm going off of their word. The new and improved edition was, indeed, a different book – in that a bunch of things that felt meaningful to fans had been either reworked or excised.
THE AUDIOBOOK EDITS
The hospital narrative had been shortened in favor of the asylum story, and the controversial “Drug / Suicide / Cutting” diaries had been scrapped. Part of the fanbase applauded this decision, but others were disappointed 🐀, as they had found the diaries to be the most (some said only) personal, authentic, and insightful chapters in the book.
Curse words, some abuse, and all mentions of abortion had also been purged. It made the book tamer, but not by much... because Emilie's age had been changed from 27 to 17. Apparently, the literary agent had suggested this to make the book more marketable to a Young Adult audience. No other biographical detail had been altered, so the main narrator was now a 17 year old girl with no parents but an established music career, who checks in by herself into a high-security adult ward, no questions asked. (I'm still perplexed by this one. Did they not expect YA readers to know how hospitals work...?)
The pirate captain, formally known by her “mass of tangled black hair”, was now... a blonde. According to EA, this was a purely aesthetic change: it made the three main Asylum girls a redhead, a blonde and a brunette, which would look better in the stage adaptation. Between the lines, it also distanced the character from its original dark-haired muse: Vecona, who had left the Crumpets in 2008 after a rumored falling-out with EA over unpaid costume work.
The minor characters based on EA's old Chicago friends had been discarded entirely. Which likely made sense for EA – she hadn't lived there in years, the friend group had drifted apart as friend groups do, and by that point, there no longer was an EA forum to administrate or comment on – but not so much for her readers. Some fans had grown fond of these fictional inmates (wasn't that the point?), and weren't too happy to see EA symbolically treat them as disposable. Others were saddened that EA would just scrap these remnants of her old life, and of what felt like simpler, happier times in the fandom. Either way, children, this is why you shouldn't get a neck tattoo of your first boyfriend's name, OR openly base the “good guys” in your career-defining book on friends you made in your early twenties.
To compensate for the loss of... most named inmate characters, Veronica was given a much more prominent role in the plot. Namely, instead of being best friends, Veronica and Emily were now... in love! Lovers! Lesbian lovers! Which naturally meant that Veronica had to die. 🔍 Besides, fans famously love it when you pull a gay ship out of thin air between your two main characters, and then kill one of them off so that the other suffers more.
One last one, because I find it especially goofy: a scrappy teddy bear named Suffer, given to Emily by the talking rats, was replaced with...a Very Large Spoon, which gets its very own number in the musical. 🎵 The rationale was that Emily could use the spoon as a weapon in the climactic uprising against the Asylum doctors. Which, fair enough... except that, prior to being a cute and anachronistic 🔍 MacGuffin in the fictional Asylum story, Suffer the Bear had been a beloved mascot🪞 from the early Opheliac live shows. Some still remembered when EA had raised HELL, even starting a #FREESUFFER campaign on Twitter, because she thought someone had stolen Suffer from the stage (it later turned out that he had been misplaced in a flight case). All that noise back in the day... and now Suffer didn't matter anymore? The nerve. “She made shirts and everything!” 🐀
All this to say, reception was lukewarm. EA hadn't performed live since 2014 and the Devil's Carnival sequel had failed to make a splash (despite decent reviews, the franchise and main collaboration fell apart before the end of the promotional tour 🔍). People were checking out. There was only one way to correct this. A true paradigm shift. A fresh start – a new theme?
Hell no. It's another edition of The Asylum for Revisionist Tortureporn Friendfictions!

ROUND 4: THE E-BOOK & THE QUEST FOR THE SPOON OF ROYALS

In 2017, about a year after the audiobook release, EA self-published a digital version of TAFWVG through Amazon. The literary agent hadn't worked out in the end: publishers were put off by how dark the book was, even after the audiobook edits. EA explained that she hadn't been comfortable with some of the alterations in the first place; she respected the agent's input and had tried to give it an honest shot, but in the end, she wanted to do it the way she wanted to do it, solo... and this was it.
EA had reverted a number of the audiobook cuts (including swear words, mentions of abortion, and the narrator's age), but kept most of the changes to the Asylum narrative – namely, the omission of Former Friends Characters, and the romance between Emily and Veronica. In the newsletter announcement, she mentions being in the process of “re-recording the few little bits of the audiobook to reflect the current text version”. Not sure where we're at on that front; it's never been brought up again, and I don't think anyone's checked. (I assume most fans had war flashbacks when they read the word “re-record”, and instantly repressed that part of the communiqué.)
The “Drug / Suicide / Cutting” diaries were still omitted in the first release of the e-book, but re-included as a coda soon after, by popular demand, under the title “Evidence of Insanity” – with fantastical “doctor's annotations” like“W14A seems to have disassociated her own identity, episodic, each lasting for a longer period of time. We suspect she will continue further in this – stronger medication is needed, schedule electroconvulsive therapy.”
A physical paperback edition was released a few months later; in anticipation of this, the e-book was a stripped-down, text-centric version of the story. (Honestly not a bad call, because the digital version from 2012 was a scanned, non-searchable, 1.3GB PDF behemoth – not super Kindle-friendly!) No elaborate backgrounds and color photographs in this edition, but the pages were still illustrated with inserts of rats, keys, teacups, and... hold on... ciphers??🪞
As always in the Asylum, history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes. In a throwback to the prelapsarian days of the Enchant Puzzle (remember? the one that no one ever managed to solve?), the e-book illustrations contained puzzles, which formed the master-key to... a scavenger hunt! And in keeping with tradition, the grand prize was an extravagant adornment hand-crafted by EA: the “Spoon of Royals”.🪞📝 Oh my!
Some of the puzzles are simple anagrams that can be solved for keywords. A clickable word within the adjacent text takes you to a password-protected link, which takes you through to an audio file – a song or an atmospheric instrumental that goes with that moment of the story. There are also more complex ciphers that decode into riddles. Each key depicted in the book has a number or letter engraved on it. The total number of rats in the book is apparently significant. One link takes you through to a blank page whose source code contains a list of coordinates from various bridges around the world.
Oh, it was a whole thing. When the book came out, you could send a picture of you doing EA's signature “rat claw” hand sign🪞 to request admission to a private Facebook group (the “Striped Stocking Society”) where people could help each other solve the clues and EA would occasionally pop in for a chat. There was also a series of mysterious newsletters in early 2018, culminating in a Los Angeles event where EA showed up in person to pass on extra puzzle-solving material to a handful of lucky fans (although said material raised more questions that it answered 📝).
Overall, it was a great idea! Although the fanbase was generally smaller and less active after four years without a new tour or album (and a fair amount of other drama, which we have yet to get into), the e-book puzzle did pique people's interest in purchasing yet another version of the same story.
Unfortunately, once again, EA overestimated either how intuitive her fans were, or how invested they would remain. After months of collaborative efforts across multiple platforms, a number of puzzles had been cracked 🔍, but it was still unclear how the individual anagrams and numbers and riddle-solutions all fit together as scavenger hunt clues.
EA kept up the hype for a while, but the few hints that she gave on social media only revealed yet more encryption factors without really helping fans connect the dots. One cipher remained unsolved on Instagram for days and days before EA caved in and hinted at which key to use. She did helpfully specify that if you didn't know how to read music, you'd better start learning. (...Was this a fun puzzle, or a prep school admission test?) The in-person LA event had also sown some confusion as to the rules and constraints of the game: would winning involve traveling to a physical location? That didn't seem very fair. EA had mentioned physically burying some items – but could you solve the puzzle from a distance? Is the Spoon of Royals literally just buried under the Shakespeare Bridge in Los Angeles, California?? 🐀
I'm just saying: if this had come up in 2008? People in corsets and platform boots would have been out there digging.
But this was 2018. As we've mentioned, the core of EA's active fanbase (a lot of whom had been teens and young adults when she was touring Opheliac) was fast aging out of the years when most folks have the spare time, dedication, or desire to essentially do super-involved homework out of love for their favorite singer. Uncovering new songs was a fun perk the first year – but after the new album came out in 2018, none of the passwords led to exclusive material anymore. It felt a bit lacklustre for something so labor-intensive.
(The new music itself wasn't a rallying point either. Behind the Musical was, quite literally, an intended vocal guide for the Asylum musical – so, basically a collection of demos. The sound was VERY Broadway Revival, somewhat Phantomish 🎵, in a way that's either good or bad depending on who's saying it. The violins, to fans' chagrin, sounded all-MIDI; no sign of actual instrumental recordings. EA sang all the parts herself, as she had on her previous album. I'm not saying there's no merit in a one-woman Andrew Lloyd Weber tribute. Many old fans enjoyed the new material well enough, some even really liked it – but most agreed that it just didn't hit like her earlier stuff used to, and that it felt rather unfinished.)
Unlike with the Enchant Puzzle, the prize itself was not much of an intrinsic motivation. While the Faerie Queen's Wings were a straightforward concept that evoked EA's own signature stage costumes, the Spoon of Royals was... a large spoon attached to a necklace, community-college-art-teacher style. It looked impractical both as a spoon and as a necklace, and more importantly, I'm not sure how many readers felt a deep emotional connection to the spoon in the story. The spoon that had usurped Suffer the Bear, no less!
In short: people gave up on the game because it was too hard, it came too late, and they had other things to do.
Thus, the Spoon of Royals remains unclaimed to this day, and I doubt I'll see anyone crack the puzzle in this lifetime. The Striped Stocking Society FB group was terminated in 2020, around the same time a bunch of fansites folded and EA closed her Instagram comments for the first time. By that point, both EA and her fans had bigger rats to skewer – but we have a ways to go before we reach that part of the story.
I would encourage you to give the puzzle a shot for the hell of it (in case you're a cryptography nerd and currently under house arrest or in a full-body cast) but... I just tried a bunch of the links, and the passwords don't work anymore. So I guess that's that. To quote old Bill by way of conclusion: “Much ado about nothing”.

ROUND TOO-MANY: I'LL SEE YOU ON BROADWAY OR I'LL SEE YOU IN HELL

So, what now? Well, not much.
By the late 2010s, what kept many fans semi-invested – if nothing else, because it clearly meant so much to EA herself – was the prospect of an upcoming stage musical adaptation. The way EA talked about it 📺, it was very much a “when”, not an “if”. Sure, ten years on, we were still collectively stuck in the Asylum, but it would at least be a new format – and a return to EA's main field of expertise, ie songwriting and performing. Not only did the core fanbase long for new music and new shows, but Fight Like a Girl and Behind the Musical had brought in small influxes of new fans who were very eager for any chance to see her live. So whether it was out of genuine enthusiasm for the project, or out of “let EA have her musical so we can maybe finally move on”, the fanbase was overall supportive.
Even though people still joked about the 2012 announcement of a “2014 West End debut” (seriously, what was she thinking?), EA had really buckled down in the intervening years, and it looked like the project was plausibly well underway. As in, we had more than just EA's word to go on: the involvement of other people, who did not reside in the Asylum, seemed to confirm that the musical was a thing.

TL;DR The equity-bond spread (defined as spread = 1/CAPE - 10Y Treasury Yield) is a measure that shows stocks relative attractiveness compared to bonds. Its this metric, rather than absolute CAPE value, that should be used in making portfolio allocation decisions. Today's spread level corresponds to lower expected outperformance for overweight stock portfolios (i.e., excess returns going from 70% stocks to 80% stocks, for example, are expected to be lower compared to the historical average). It may be wise to hold a neutral or even underweight allocation to equities, given today's valuations.
Introduction
As of this writing, first drafted on April 22 2024, the Shiller PE sits at 33.27. Many analysts and investment managers will tell you to fear this number. In his latest memo, Jeremy Grantham says that today’s price-to-earnings metrics sit in the top 1% of modern history, sounding the alarm for U.S. equity bubble territory.
Well, the U.S. is really enjoying itself if you go by stock prices. A Shiller P/E of 34 (as of March 1st) is in the top 1% of history. Total profits (as a percent of almost anything) are at near-record levels as well. Remember, if margins and multiples are both at record levels at the same time, it really is double counting and double jeopardy – for waiting somewhere in the future is another July 1982 or March 2009 with simultaneous record low multiples and badly depressed margins.
I don’t think it’s quite so simple; it might not be appropriate to look at a single asset class in a vacuum the way that many in the investment community do. Is a 30+ PE high? Objectively, it sounds pretty frothy. If bonds were yielding 10%, I’d almost certainly say that bonds were more attractive. If they were yielding sub-2% like much of the post GFC decade, it might not be as straight forward. At a Shiller PE in the low 30’s, we have a very conservative 3% earnings yield (remember, Shiller averages the past 10 years of earnings) before even accounting for earnings growth. One might conclude that stocks have the slight edge in this case.
The point is, we can’t look at a single valuation metric and make an informed decision. We have to consider valuations of equities against the universe of other asset types.
With this post, my aim is to take a more holistic look at valuations - particularly valuation spreads - and see if we can’t make investment decisions based on our findings.
A Simple Visualization
A great place to start with this analysis, and the place that I started when I first began exploring this topic, is a quick visualization plotting stock yields vs bond yields. By doing so, we can start to form a picture on where we are in respect with history.

It’s important to point out what inferences we might try to gage from this chart.
First, intuition tells us that high earnings yields and high bond yields (as defined by the 10-year treasury, in this case) would lead to high forward equity and bond returns, respectively. So the further right on the plot we are, the higher the future equity returns might be. Likewise, the higher (vertically) the point is, the higher the bond returns should be.
With further inspection, the right most points correspond with the years surrounding the late 1910’s and early 1920’s; leading into what has been monikered the roaring 20’s.
1982 is also highlighted on this plot; which was the kickoff to one of the strongest bond and bull markets in history.
These are in-line with our expectations: high returns happen when yields are high. Duh. Don’t worry, there’s more.
More generally, the further up and to the right we are on the aforementioned graph, the better we can expect forward returns to be for a diversified portfolio.
It’s apt to point out that 2022 was basically the inverse of 1982, having the lowest bond & stock yield combination in the modern era. In fact, the post-GFC era was essentially hugging the lower bounds of both stock and bond yields compared to the pre-GFC era.
We can also start to see a shadow of how bonds and stocks might be related. Perhaps when bonds are yielding higher than stocks, stock returns suffer in relation to bonds. We see that the year 2000 (the dotcom bubble top) had equity earnings yields just over 2% (the lowest in history) while treasuries were yielding nearly 7%. We all know how that turned out.
On that note, one might hypothesize that the spread between stock earnings yields and bond yields might be a predictor on how portfolios perform over time. More on that later.
Historical Equity-Bond Spreads
Let’s first define what the Equity-Bond Spread is:
Equity-Bond Spread = (1 / CAPE) - (10 Year Treasury Yield)

Again, the implication is that the higher the equity-bond spread (simply referred to as “spread” moving forward) the more attractive equities are in comparison to bonds (i.e., equity earnings yield of 10% looks more attractive than a 3% bond yield, the spread being 10% - 3% = 7%)
The figure below shows us the historical distributions of equity-bond spreads. Also noted, that today’s valuations lie in the left side of the distribution.
Excess Returns
The goal of this study is to see if we can find some indication on whether the spread between stock and bond yields is predictive of future returns.
The easiest way to accomplish this is to compare a stock heavy portfolio to a bond heavy portfolio. One might argue between something super stock heavy like a 90/10 (stock / bond) vs 60/40. But let’s first look at complete opposites of the spectrum: 90/10 vs 10/90.
We’ll define “excess return” as follows:
Excess Return = (10 year annualized return of 90 / 10 portfolio) - (10 year annualized return of a 10 / 90 portfolio)
As an example, in the year 1990, a 90/10 portfolio had a 10 year annualized return of 13.6% while a 10/90 portfolio had a 10 year annualized return of 5.3%, giving an excess return of 8.3%.
Also, in the year 1990, the Shiller PE was 17.05 giving a equity earnings yield of 5.87%. The 10 year treasury yield was 8.21% at that time. This gives a spread of -2.34%.

The big takeaway from this plot is that 1) stocks outperform bonds almost always and 2) there is a decent correlation between the equity-bond spread and excess returns. When stocks yield much higher than bonds, stock heavy portfolios tend to do better, in comparison, vs when the spread is low or negative.
But we already knew that stocks typically perform better than bonds. The better assessment might be when to overweight stocks compared to a more traditional portfolio. Or, better yet, when to take the foot off the gas on a stock heavy portfolio. So let’s do the same exercise, this time comparing a 90/10 to a more traditional 60/40.

I’ve left the original 10/90 comparison on the plot for the visualization. As expected, the excess returns, across the board, are less pronounced because we’re comparing a stock heavy portfolio to a slightly less stock heavy portfolio. But the conclusion is clear. The spread does appear to have an impact on excess returns. In negative spread environments, we’re not paid nearly as much for the extra risk as when spreads are positive and wide. In highly positive spread environments, excess returns can be in the range of 3 - 5%. Which, we all know, can be very impactful over the long-run.
Understanding Valuation Drivers
For bonds, valuation is pretty easy: an investor can purchase a bond for a given yield-to-maturity (although returns on bonds aren’t quite as simple).
For equities, we should examine the components of the discounted cash flow model.
In the long run, a PE ratio might be estimated as follows (this is the terminal value equation):
PE = (1+g) / (d-g)
Above, “g” is the long run earnings growth rate, and “d” is the discount rate. In the case of price-to-earnings, “d” will be the cost of equity. I won’t cover these more in depth here because this is a very simplified look, but cost of equity is essentially a measure of risk or the required expected return for the asset.
From this, we can actually glean a lot of useful information.
If the security is considered very safe (ie low risk), the discount rate “d” will be low (since the required rate of return is typically lower for a safe asset). A low discount rate in the equation above will lead to a higher PE ratio.
Conversely, a risky security will have a high discount rate, which will lead to a lower PE.
A high long run growth rate, “g”, will increase the numerator and decrease the denominator, leading to a higher PE for a given discount rate.
From these three ideas, we see that risk and growth are comingled in valuations. Something that’s low risk and has low earnings growth might actually have the same high PE valuation as something that’s high risk and high earnings growth. But the expected return will actually be higher for the high risk security.
This all just to say that while PE ratios are related to forward expected returns, they don’t tell the full story. This is an important caveat to the next section.
Current Valuations By Asset Classes
The following data was pulled from Vanguards Website.

This chart isn’t meant to be used to decide what asset mixture to make your portfolio. Instead, it’s meant to be used, qualitatively, as a starting point to see what asset mixes might make sense to hold.
Typically, in terms of valuations, the further up and to the right (high starting yield + high earnings growth) on this graph indicates higher predicted forward returns.
But there are trade offs. Namely, this doesn’t account, directly, for risk. Bonds (BND) is considered ‘risk-free’, but it doesn’t offer any potential for earnings (or coupon) growth. Developed international (VEA) looks attractive compared to the S&P 500 (VOO) on a starting yield basis, but it has offered less earnings growth, and comes with extra baggage in terms of geopolitical risk. But high risk does typically mean higher potential returns. The same goes for Emerging Markets (VWO), but to an even greater extent.
Does History Have to Look Like the Past
Something else to consider, especially when looking back at the first couple of sections, is “does today have to look like the past?” Do current market environment have stocks overvalued, or is it that historic valuations had stocks inordinately undervalued?
Maybe stocks aren’t as risky as we first thought. Especially in the U.S., the largest companies might not carry a ton of risk at all. In that sense, maybe it was the early days of modern capitalism that were inefficient, and we’re now getting to a more balanced regime in terms of valuations, where risk-free bonds yield in the 3-5% range, and slightly riskier stocks return in the 5-7% range. In this case, the current spread environment would make sense, where starting yields are much closer, and the earnings growth potential of stocks makes up the difference in forward expected returns. But this would be all the more reason to hold a diversified portfolio. Why hold only stocks, when stocks and bonds will give a similar range of outcomes.
Stocks also offer other advantages over bonds. Namely inflation protection. If inflation spikes, bonds an investor is currently holding will not only lose value due to rising interest rates, but the purchasing power of the dollars tied to those bonds will decline over time. Stocks are somewhat more resilient in that revenues and earnings (assuming steady margins) will rise with inflation. In this sense, stocks are actually less risky than bonds or cash.
Inflation also affects the spread in another way. The CAPE ratio uses inflation adjusted earnings from the past. What this means is that in a high inflation environment, the CAPE ratio comes down without any correction in price. We saw this in 2022 where the CAPE fell nearly 30% while the S&P 500 only fell 18%. Due to this phenomena, in a high inflation environment, the metrics used above can correct themselves even while equity prices are climbing.
Another potential issue with this study is that accounting standards have changed over time. Earnings today may not be comparable to earnings of the past. I haven’t explored these potential differences here, but it might be prudent to do so if you were to use this study for actionable advice.
Conclusions
Are we in a Bubble?
To give Jeremy Grantham a rebuttal (although, I’m sure he’s not asking for one). No, I don’t think we’re in an outright bubble. U.S. markets might be frothy, and forward returns will probably be lower for U.S. stocks, but we’ve seen in the data above that 10 year returns have been fine given any market spread and valuation. Would I be surprised if we had another bear market? No. But I’d be just as un-surprised if we average 6-8% equity returns for the next decade.
Asset Allocations
To me, when presented with the data above, it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll be rewarded for holding an overweight U.S. equity portfolio. While equities should continue to outperform bonds for the next ten years, if today’s environment rhymes with history, holding an underweight stock portfolio won’t cost us much in terms of returns. But it may come with the added benefit of lower volatility and overall risk. An underweight portfolio also still has some potential to outperform. That all seems like a good trade-off.
In addition, international (both developed and emerging) markets have relatively enticing valuations and return prospects. While there’s no guarantee that either will outperform U.S. equities, they may offer uncorrelated returns that also won’t drag too much on the overall portfolio.
In general, given the current valuation environment, a balanced portfolio might be the best path forward for risk adjusted returns.

I am feeling very… incompetent and overwhelmed. I would love for some fellow ECE professionals to tell me if I have a right to feel this way and what I should do about it. I would also love some advice from parents, as I feel like the parents of my kids are becoming increasingly frustrated with me about their child’s lack of visible educational growth.
For context, I was hired to be the lead pre-K teacher for a group of 10+ mixed-age kids (not saying the exact amount) with the average age being four years old. I was hired under the understanding that I would have an assistant and a certain amount of time per week of planning.
At first, I had an assistant. She was there for about 3 weeks before I could tell she did not like the pressure of the classroom. When the admin offered her a different position outside of the classroom, she took it. I’m not faulting her for that, but where my issue lies is that they told me about this change one day and it went into effect immediately the next day, meaning I was quite literally alone within 24 hours. That was a few months ago. They have not hired a replacement.
Here’s where I find myself drowning. Although I am within ratio, my workload has increased exponentially due to the fact that it’s just me. As it stands, I am the opener, the middle, and the closer for my room. I have been coming in to work five to ten minutes early every day so I can clean and prep a bit before I get my kids from the class next door. I take down the chairs, set the calendar, lay out breakfast, make sure the bathrooms are clean, and then I get my kids. During nap, I clean the sinks, toilets, mirrors, tables, floors, windows, door handles, a bucket of toys, and the chairs. After the kids leave, I clean the bathrooms again, sinks, vacuum, sweep, mop, restock supplies and cleaners, and laundry. Since I am the lead, I am also responsible for curriculum. I’m supposed to plan a month in advance, get supplies, prep materials, execute lessons daily, and document the children (parents are supposed to receive MINIMUM of four photos per week). On top of this, since I am alone, I am the only one who is able to monitor and correct behavior. Three of my kids can be just plain mean. I have four with speech needs. Four of them are quite physical. There’s three pairs of kids who do not get along AT ALL, and there’s one who only speaks by yelling. My eyes have to be scanning the room always. To be quite frank, between cleaning and putting out fires, curriculum has been on a back burner. I usually let them free play and do my best just to keep them alive. I have not been getting my planning time per week, so doing it during the day hasn’t been possible. I end up leaving anywhere from 10-50 minutes late every day, and I get in trouble for overtime. I would say I could skimp on some cleaning or closing duties, but since im the closer and the opener in my room, cutting corners means that I screw myself. During the day, no one checks on me. If we haven’t had callouts, a floater will let me go to the bathroom once in the morning, but other than that, I’m on my own for the whole day.
Parents have been pointedly asking me what their child is learning. One mother said, “I see she comes home with art, but what are the things she is LEARNING?” (Her child spends the majority of free play in the art center). I wasn’t mad at the question. It’s a totally fair thing to ask. But it sure was awkward for me to stand there and try to explain how her child did not in fact learn anything that day (academically speaking, at least. She did learn how to share and socialize, so I count that as learning). I just don’t have physical evidence of academics because there isn’t even time for me to run to the printer to copy a worksheet. I sense the tension with a couple other parents who are academically focused. I know they know that I’m not getting the lesson plans done. It’s embarrassing and even though I really am trying my hardest, I’m so ashamed.
My boss has not been helpful. I’ve told her multiple times that I’m struggling and she says “I understand.” I’ve told her I am doing the job of two people and she said, “we’re hiring for that spot.” I was told a few months ago that they were bringing in two people to interview. I’ve emailed HR and got sent to a higher up, who said she also “understands.” I have asked for help and made my needs known, but nothing changes.
I find myself snappy with the kids and getting burned out. It feels like my treadmill pace is set to 15 but I can only run 9. I can’t keep up. I’m overwhelmed and discouraged. I feel like I’m disappointing parents and not living up to expectations. I feel like a glorified babysitter. I feel very alone and voiceless. I feel like I am doing the job of 2 people, yet I get in trouble for not doing it in 8 hours. Ultimately, it feels like I simply just can’t do it all.
ECE professionals: Do I have a right to feel this way? Is this a typical workload, or is this actually unreasonable? Parents: How would you react if you knew your child’s teacher was in this situation? Would you be upset at the teacher for not completing lesson plans as expected?
TL/DR: I’m flying solo and struggling. Is this normal?

To all the incoming freshmen or other underclassmen - you’ll prolly hear it a lot, but the time really does go by so fast. Enjoy it, soak it in, and step out of your comfort zone. Someone posted their classes thru Purdue to let other students know how those classes were (in case it was a niche/high-level class or it wasn’t on RateMyProfessor). That was pretty helpful to me so Imma do it too. I’ll let u kno how the courses went and what I can remember. I’m graduating from the College of Ag with a B.S. in Animal Sciences with a concentration in Biosciences and minors in Biotechnology and Real Estate. I came into Purdue with AP and Dual Credits, so some things I didn’t take. Anyway, here are the classes I took.

AGR 101: Intro to Ag & Purdue (Multiple lecturers)
This course was THE intro course to Purdue and Ag (duh). It was a 1/2 semester course so I was done with it by week 8 and there was only a quiz. We were told the purpose of Purdue being land-grant and were just intro’d to the different parts/departments of the college of Ag + different success tips. This was also the class where u begin (already) thinking about your 4-year plan and create a LinkedIn. Easy A, just show up and learn about the college of Ag
AGR 114: Intro to ANSC Programs (Ashley York)
Also a 1/2 semester course that was done by Oct. This class just went into depth on what to expect as a student in the department. You may start work on a resumé, continue with planning or LinkedIn. Again, easy A, just show up. Also, Ashley was a saint helping me each year to make sure I was on track, even tho she wasn’t my advisor.
ANSC 102: Intro to Animal Ag (Elizabeth Karcher)
This class was the first “real” class of college. It was just an intro to different domestic species and the operations tht are part of animal ag. I think there was also a lab with the class where u were introduced to animals. Dr. Karcher also was a pretty good professor. Just pay attention - it’s sort of memorization for random facts about animals/common sense depending on what u took in high school/home life in a rural area. Should be easy A.
CHM 115: Gen Chem (Multiple lecturers)
Was never a fan of chemistry, so this class I went into with dread. I didn’t want to take AP Chem, and just dealt with it in college. Honestly, if u took honors/were a good student in hs chemistry, there should be no problem - was basically just like a high school class. There was a lab that went with this course, but because of COVID, I just had an online worksheet to do every week for pre-, in-, and post-lab so I can’t speak on it. If u aren’t inclined to chem, it might take a bit of extra studying, but I was never worried.
PHIL 110: Intro to Philosophy (Taylor Davis)
To be fair, I never exactly wanted to take this exact class. I came from a small town in the Midwest, so I wanted to be sure I wasn’t dumb or anything to the people, cultures, etc. around me. Told my advisor I wanted to take a class to give me more of a “world” perspective, so she suggested the class. It honestly was not bad at all. The professor knew what he was talking abt and very accepting of questions. We learned how to tear down an argument and build it up in several ways and talked about cool things like if we have free will, does God exist, etc. The only assignments that counted for the sem were a midterm and 2 papers - 1 small and 1 large philosophical essay over any topic from the class. Definitely changed my outlook, would recommend taking it. The first part of class was harder - making sure u understand why/how an argument does or doesn’t work - but the rest was fun/easy as the topics were just presented and talked about.
AGEC 217: Economics (Larry Deboer)
I found Econ as a topic in and of itself to be quite boring. Supply and demand, money, etc. The class kind of turned out that way. Its presented as basically supply/demand and reasons for changes to the them were slowly added throughout the semester. We had several assignments, but they were nothing terrible. Gotta give props to the professor, tho. He knew the class wasn’t great but made it fun. Also, the class is flexible for schedules as in some situations it can count for credit in place of ECON251.
POL 223: Intro to Environmental Policy (Tara Grillos)
When I first started, I thought the route I wanted was ANSC with some focus in environmental issues. That’s why I took this class. I don’t understand the “intro” part, really. The whole class was presented as just case studies for things that have happened that impacted policies from the late 1800s/early 1900s until recently. Some of the info was cool. I don’t remember much for assignments, but there was a group project/paper where u had to decide on an environmental issue, state how u plan to fix it, on what level of government, etc. It wasn’t a crazy class to be in as a freshman, but it was not what I was expecting for a POL class.
ANSC 181: Orientation to ANSC (Elizabeth Byers)
Another 1/2 semester course. This class, as far as I can remember, was just for showing u the possibilities available to u in ANSC. This was specifically ANSC. It went over every concentration and what jobs/salaries there were. This was also a class where we were assigned to create our resumés (professionally) and start networking. Just as, if not easier than the other 1/2 semester classes so far.
ANSC 221: Principles of Animal Nutrition (Dale Forsyth)
Sorry but not sorry for anyone in ANSC. The class is boring, but Dr. Dale Forsyth is such a sweet old man. This class is the intro for nutrition in ANSC. U will learn the different required nutrients, food stuffs (supplements and stuff too) that have these nutrients, what happens when animals are given too little of these, and how to balance/create rations for animals (ruminant and non-ruminant). As long as u are okay/good with algebra, there shouldn’t be a problem. U just need to solve systems of equations in Excel to get the right weight of a food stuff. Homework was balancing rations. Exams looked at that + nutrients and their deficiencies. Dr. Forsyth also talks fast and doesn’t slow down because he has a lot to get thru. Come into the class knowing it prolly isn’t going to be very fun, but u need to know it. Try to find something interesting in the whole.
BIOL 111: Fundamentals of Bio II (Sean Humphrey)
Not sure how this class really is. I came into college loving biology and being (not to sound like an ass) great at it. To me, it was easy and relearning biology from high school for a bit. To others it may be a bit more difficult. There is just a lot of memorization. The professor was nice and answered my questions when I had them and explained in great detail if I was confused. I can’t remember any assignments I turned in, or anything about exams. Overall, I thought it was an easy class, but be the judge urself.
CHM 116: Gen Chem (Multiple lecturers)
Just a continuation of CHM 115. It picked up where it left off. Got a little harder, but it was nowhere as hard as TV or anything makes it. There are definitely topics that show up from hs again, but a lot is new. Wasn’t fun for this class switching lecturers every few weeks since they each had their own lecture style. Again, there was a lab section, but because of COVID, it was a worksheet. Not the worst class, but a meh class.
MA 16020: Applied Calc II (Alexandros Kafkas)
The first and only time I had to take math here. In hs I took MA 165 and thought it was a breeze (prolly bc it was hs). To anyone wondering, MA 165 SHOULD count in place of MA 16010 in college of ag. With that in mind, I went into the course knowing what Purdue math is known for, but still keepin an open mind with my abilities. I’m really proud of the grade I got, too. I think a lot of the course depends on the lecturer - mine was good at teaching us new concepts. Learn all you can about the lecturer beforehand, find out if they are good, and see it for yourself. We had quizzes in class every week (MWF) over the previous lecture and homework thru LON-CAPA that was usually due the day aftebefore (Tues, Thurs, Sun, I think). The quizzes and homework were good starting problems. The exams were tough and harder than quizzes/hw. If u’ve done well in math, but aren’t a prodigy or someone who can put in hrs of work, don’t expect to get likely higher than mid-70s on exams. It was common to get around a 50-60%. They do curve “if it’s necessary” but it is ALWAYS necessary.

SOPHOMORE YEAR
AGR 201: Communicating Across Cultures (Pamala Morris)
To start…BOO. Was not a fan of this class. Felt like it was a money grab and busy work. It was required for some international understanding credits. The content wasnt interesting but for sure important. We were taught to basically be good ppl and about the different types of hardships that groups of ppl could go thru (ageism, sexism, racism, classism, etc.). We were required to buy the book, which was $50, but written by the prof and from what I assume was her website. I don’t recall ever using it unless it was necessary for an assignment. The class helps u relate and think critically, but is done in a piss-poor way. It could hv been the COVID aftermath where lecture was done virtually but we had a class later on with other students for a “lab”. Quizzes were easy, and overall easy, but so bad too.
SPAN 201: Spanish III (Nancy Reyes)
I know I’ve said this already abt other courses, but this still applies. This course was 100% a high school class. I did a placement test into this course (after 3 years in HS Spanish - Fr. to Jr. - with a 2 year gap of not learning) and got all credit for Spanish 1 and 2. Took it for international understanding credits. This course made sure u knew the basics again, spent a lot of time in past tense, then ended w maybe a month in subjective and future tense. There were a few speaking assignments and cultural readings/lectures. Was encouraged to speak Spanish for class, but the prof knew that couldn’t happen but still helped us all. Exams included MC, writing, and listening. Not sure if this is the same for other languages, but hopefully it is.
CHM 255 + 25501: Orgo + Lab (Elizabeth Parkinson)
Dreaded this class, but went in confidently. The class sucks, no other way abt it. It was a lot of memorization and practice. A lot of the “basic” stuff started sticking about halfway thru the semester. It doesn’t help that I stopped going to lecture about 3/4 thru the sem. It wasn’t as hard as expected, but it was still quite hard. The prof was amazing at making the content interesting. Labs were ran by GTAs. Depending on the section your GTA may not kno anything. The labs also did not go along with the lecture - they are 2 separate courses that can individually be passed or failed. Exams were as you would expect with the course - a few high spots among a crowd of C’s and D’s. The lab had multiple things due every week w the semester started. It was expected to do ur pre-lab at start of week, turn in ur in-lab immediately after finishing lab, then the previous week’s post-lab/final lab was due. The lab also holds the policy that if u don’t show up dressed right or sleep late, if you don’t show up within 10/15min of start that u can’t show up and will receive a 0 for the lab.
ANSC 230: Physiology of Domestic Animals (Rod Allrich)
This class taught me a lot. Each week was a different body system and learning info regarding animals individually. Things were taught in general as overarching concepts, but then things were applied as necessary for individual species of animals. Everything was brought up from the digestive system to the endocrine system. The class met 4 days a week and had a quiz once a week. There was no lab when I took the course. The specific professor I had was also interesting to say the least. Dr. Allrich is a funny, good man, but he does not use or create slides. Instead he uses his own website to post info (usually from Merck veterinary) abt whatever it is he wanted u to learn. In class he would just ramble on about what he thought was important. ANYTHING he said could be test material - no matter what (I was told by an upperclassman to remember that his favorite pie was sour cream and raisin pie bc it was a quiz question they had). Now, there is a lab that goes with the course. Also, if u hv Cabot the course material and class are much harder than with Rod. There are expectations, lectures, and more. Regardless of the professor, the information that was taught was useful, remembered, and interesting. In any class, Rod typically will have this structure but will grade easily. Quizzes will be to write statements of fact and exams won’t exist or will be take-home with only having 5 paragraphs to write using a word bank
ABE 226: Biotech Lab I (Kari Clase)
This was the first course I took for my minor in Biotechnology. I did not know what to expect going in as I didn’t grasp the scope of biotech. The course was ran well. The whole class is a wet lab where u are in the scientific process trying to find a new species of bacteriophage. U dig in dirt, do some pipetting, use beakers, make plates, isolate DNA, and send it off. Any research u do/finding a phage gets put into a national database for phage research. U do hv lab notebooks that get checked, but hv an outline to go off. There were several quizzes and deliverables that had us learn about phage more, or aseptic technique. It was a good class. U do have to buy a lab coat (which is kinda cool). Easy class that kickstarted my interest.
CHM 256 + 25601: Orgo II + Lab (David Thompson)
This class was disastrous. It was me, the content AND the professor as to why that was the case. This was just a continuation of course and lab. The new content was harder to wrap my head around, + I stopped going to the lectures about halfway thru the sem. To make matters worse, the class was early and the prof was speaking in mach turtle. I would listen to the lectures a day later so I could 2x speed thru them and the man was sounding like a normal person talked. This class was harder than the previous course. If u didn’t like CHM 255, sorry this is worse. The lab was just the same as the previous sem, but the GTAs changed. Again, labs didn’t go with the lecture and are 2 individual courses to be passed or failed separately. I passed but the class made me rethink my life once or twice and was potentially the worst class I ever took.
STAT 301: Elementary Stat Methods (Spencer Hamrick)
I did not enjoy this course a single bit - besides the professor. The course throws, what I felt like, was the entire concept, terms, rules, designs of statistics at u. It was a lot at once for me. I felt like there was a disconnect between what I was learning and in what ways it applied to me. It wasn’t too difficult, but the class was boring. There was also a lab section that was not great either. We were forced to use SRSS. There were homework assignments on a different software/website that equally were boring. The exams were harder than expected - there were some sections with questions with such small disparities that the answer came down to a difference of 1 word in a sentence. Overall, there’s a lot to learn and it’s all pretty basic to give a general understanding, but it was done poorly. If it was done better, it likely would have been an easy course. This course tho is also one of the worst classes I took.
AGRY 320: Genetics (Joseph Anderson)
There’s not much to say about this course. It was genetics. It felt like another continuation from the end of BIOL 111. It built a foundation for DNA, chromosomes, and went from there. There was a lot of higher thinking and content that was build upon thru the semester. It was a bit of memorization, but the content was fun. There were hotseat/iclicker questions for each lecture. Prof. Anderson was also really good at presenting the info.
AGRY 321: Genetics Lab (Aneesha Kulkarni)
This was the lab that went with AGRY 320. It was separate from the lecture. I do not believe it ever followed along with the lecture. The semester was spent with Arabidopsis. From the plant, we extracted DNA, did PCR, did mutant analysis, etc. The whole semester led up to a final lab report for what had been done that semester. There were also some small lab assignments that needed done. The class was also serious about attendance which could have made a major impact on grades. It is also typically ran by a GTA. It was fun and I enjoyed it. There was never really any work that needed to be done outside of class and at times it let out early.
ANSC 333: Physiology of Reproduction (Jonathan Pasternak)
This was a good class. The content focused on female anatomy/physiology first, then male anatomy/physiology, then on interactions and changes to the body through hormones and development. I found the class to be interesting as there is a lot more that goes into reproduction that u think. It’s a lot of cool info thrown out, but in a manageable way. Notes can go fast n there is a lot of terms and items to pay attention to. There was also a lab portion to this class. The lab went with what we learned in lectures. It was hands-on learning and doing things. It might sound gross but we had a lab where we took fetuses from a pig uterus to weigh and look at. We also looked at pig semen under a microscope. The professor was obsessed with histology. Expect to look at many slides of different tissues and know how/why they differ, where they are from, etc. I don’t remember assignments, but there was a lab practical that involved many things. Overall, it was a fun class.
ABE 227: Biotech Lab II (Kari Clase)
This class was busy. There were lots of things that needed to be done often (oddly no true deadlines it felt like). This was the dry lab portion. After ABE 226, any DNA that was collected sufficiently was sequenced and the data came back. That’s essentially what the semester was for. With the DNA from a phage, u must make entries to find out the start/stop site of genes, gene function; BLAST the genes, gather evidence there is truly a gene, and more. There were some small assignments with deliverables. There was also a larger project that was put into the undergrad research symposium. From the DNA, a small group chose a gene and researched. A lot of busy work and nights up, but there was a final genome announcement and research went into real life.

JUNIOR YEAR
HIST 33805: History of Human Rights (Rebekah Klein-Pejsova)
This class was a requirement for an upper level humanities course. This class was easy and interactive. There were some readings that had to be done outside of class, but not much else was required. U would read, then come to class, fill out a discussion, and talk. The content started back in history and moved all the way to just beyond the Holocaust. There were a couple writing assignments that were like a paragraph. The final was to write a paragraph on when u thought the history of human rights began. Again, easy and almost no work required.
BCHM 307: Biochem (Barbara Golden)
I loved this course. Dr. Golden was soft spoken but she made sure u got the info u needed. The content felt like a mix of genetics and chem. The course was biology-sided for those that hate chem. This course went back to the central dogma and such, but then included a lot of metabolism and inner workings of cells. There were parts involving the Citric acid cycle and other “basic” biology concepts that went into further explanation from a different perspective. I believe there were also hotseat/iclicker questions. If u liked biology or genetics, u should like this course, too.
BCHM 309: Biochem Lab (Orla Hart)
Just like the genetics lab, this lab did content that led up to something big at the end. The lab was spent learning basic lab technique, then focused on isolating and purifying LDH from a Bradford assay. There were lab reports/assignments, but they all help and lead to the big lab report. It was a fun time. Dr. Hart was a fantastic prof for the course as she fully knew the topic, always helped out, and had high expectations. She would also joke and talk with us. She shared about her family (she’s Irish), her cats, n more. + she would talk with you in her office, where she had Ghirardelli chocolates to eat. There was a written midterm + u are required to wear a lab coat and goggles during lab.
ANSC 311: Animal Breeding & Genetics (Donna Lofgren)
This was another class that I liked a lot. For anyone interested in this topic, it is not what u expect. The class is not punnet squares and seeing what traits u can see. This class was a lot of math. You had to find the allelic/gene frequencies, var, covariance, selection intensity, generation interval, EBV, etc. I cannot stress that this class is a lot of math (prolly 75/25 to 85/15 for math/concepts). It is, however, one of the few genetics restrictive selectives for ANSC (if I remember right). There is other content too, learning about how to breed animals, components of breeding and genetics, etc. There is a lecture and lab. The lab is when homework was intro’d and we were given time to ask questions/complete it. The lab lasted 2 hours, and usually there would be several homework problems left. There was also a large project that used a sim (mine was beef, other years used lamb/sheep). I would have to cull and breed to get better genetics, get rid of disease, etc. The better the offspring the better. This sim was paired with an arrow chart and written report. Lot of work, but a lot of fun.
ANSC 326: Applied Non-Ruminant Nutrition (John Radcliffe)
This class was boring. Unless u love animal nutrition, it’s hard for it not to be. This was like a continuation of ANSC 221, but only focused on (essentially) pigs. Once again, just learning the background/basic info for feeding animals, providing nutrients, and balancing/creating rations. Also, this class also uses a lot of Excel - more than ANSC 221. There was a final for the course, but it was only a 1/2 semester course. There may have also been a lab section, but the work typically finished quickly.
ANSC 446: Companion Animal Mgmt (Rod Allrich)
Another course with Rod. It was basically nonsense. U learned what it took to keep companion animals healthy and managed. Specific diseases/interests were looked at for animals during class + issues/problems with animal clinics, shelters, etc. There wasnt much to learn. Since it was Rod, there were no slides. Anything written could be tested. Students had to present some issue with companion animals for points twice in the semester. There was also an animal business plan due at the end of the semester. It was required to describe the location, services, employees, their benefits, etc. There were no exams, but there were his quizzes - u were provided movies to watch and write a 1-page summary/reflection on what u saw. Once u get used to Rod, his classes are some of the easiest to ever take.
MGMT 200: Intro Accounting (Terra Maienbrook)
This was my first class for my Real Estate minor. If u have taken any math class at college u should be fine. This course is an intro. U learn the accounting equation, debits, credits, depreciation, and interpreting it through balance sheets. It can get a little confusing when things are broken down further, but as long as u pay attention there shouldn’t be trouble. Just remember what debits and credits do and u should pass the course. There were assignments that helped understand what needed to be done and how the content u are learning works, but it turns into busy work later on. If u get 1 small error as ur doing ur balance sheet, then the whole problem will be wrong and it probably won’t tell u what the error is. The professor also used hotseat/iclicker for attendance, so make sure to show up. She did let u come to any section at any time and still do the attendance. Exams weren’t difficult if u pay attention and do well in lecture and homework. If u do well, the prof would even email saying that u did well.
MGMT 304: Intro to Financial Mgmt (Phil Baeza)
This class was okay. Part of it could have been it was the prof’s 2nd semester teaching here. The class was a lot of basic info for management/econ and was also a requirement for the Real Estate minor. U are taught corporate finance + the goals of it, cash flows and a bunch of math with related terms (NPV, PV, NWC, NOI, etc.) None of it was exactly difficult to figure out. The class itself wasn’t bad content-wise. Once u learned the information, it was there. There was a lot of Excel for solving problems. If u aren’t good with Excel - make that a priority. The course also had exams, but you were allowed a typed cheat sheet for each. Besides the exams, there was also a case competition (so many of these in MGMT classes). Info was gathered about a company and with a group had to decide to approve or disapprove of their loan request. Overall, not terrible, but hard to sit thru.
ANSC 303: Animal Behavior (Marisa Erasmus)
This was an interesting class to take. It was pretty fun (and I ended up as a TA, my last semester). The course is essentially psychology in animals. You learn conditioning, scientists who contributed to the study, types of interactions, and types of behaviors (maintenance, maternal, social, play, sickness, etc.) and how they are in animals. The course also has a lab section with it. The lab section is essentially to allow for time for the zoo project, although there were some labs that went to the ASREC to observe those animals. For the project u are provided an animal at the zoo to research, go to the local zoo, and observe them. When ur back you create a presentation for the research you did involving the animal and enrichment provided by the zoo. In class, there were several quizzes over lecture content plus a midterm. There were also assignments, but many of them had some involvement with the zoo. The class also had no final, but there was a final quiz. The professor did talk fast sometimes, but as long as you typed or rewrote notes later, there was no issue.
STAT 503: Stat Methods for Biology (Yan Xing)
Unsure of why, but I loved my grad level stats courses. They were much easier and fun to learn than STAT 301 (so if u hate STAT301, give 503 a try). This course basically started at the beginning. The content started with learning sample vs population, statistic vs parameter, plus sample unit, size, variables, and variable types. The course became harder as time went on, but nothing was super difficult. The topics included basic stats (mean, stdev, var, types of distributions, unions/intersection), marginal probability, tree diagrams, binomial distributions, chi-square, ANOVA, hypothesis testing, and multiple comparisons (like bonferonni). The information was always presented in a way catered to life sciences (crazy). The lectures not presented in class, but expected to be watched beforehand. I did not go to lecture, but watched the lecture videos on my own. That was enough understanding to easily pass. There were homework assignments that were due every other week. Start them sooner than later, you’ll need the time! This class was also my introduction to coding in R. I had no experience in any coding beforehand but easily got the hang of it, especially since the professor provided tutorials. It was used for every homework, basically. There were also quizzes that weren’t too difficult. The class was not easy, but it was fun.
ABE 512: Good Regulatory Practices (Keri Clase/Stephen Byrn)
This was the final class I needed to get my Biotechnology minor. It was terrible. The professors were nice, but there was no structure. The lectures were about regulatory science and dealt a lot with information from the FDA. The course went over the good and required practices required for the creation, testing, passing, and distribution of medical equipment and/or drugs. Every small detail and information that was not in lectures was required to be known. There were quizzes and assignments that all got turned in through Gradescope. The quizzes are where random information was expected to be known. The assignments were deliverables which asked some question or inquired about a part of the process and write about them. The final was a final deliverable that had to effectively be a conglomeration of the other deliverables (but not just copying and pasting). The class wasn’t hard, but very poorly set up.

SENIOR YEAR
CSR 103: Intro to Personal Finance (Wookjae Heo)
I just needed a filler class in my schedule. I figured it could help learn some “real world” stuff that maybe I wasn’t sure about. The class was completely online with provided lecture videos. It was very easy and what would be expected. Topics went from how to manage debt and make sure you can get loans, to being informed about credit cards and insurance. All the information was easy to get through. There were writing assignments to be done basically every week. The professor would have you read a paper that 50/50 he had a part in writing, and answer questions. Some things were interactives that just needed to be completed (regardless of how well). Not a bad class. It will definitely pad your GPA - everything taught should be common knowledge.
MGMT 370: Real Estate Fundamentals (Lindsay Relihan)
This course was quite informative. It was an average level of difficulty. There was a lot of information that went into it - I mean it is a fundamentals class. Topics that were talked about included foundations of real estate, what is real estate, valuation of property, lending, time value of money, multiple financial ratios, and taxation. There were multiple assignments - some writing and others math. The writing was for discussions (5 of them) about certain papers provided or certain book chapters. The math assignments were problem sets to get done for what we had learned. They gave plenty of time to finish them. Beyond that, there was also another case study/competition. For this a company was selected and given potential locations to move to. You had to decide if it was worth it for the company to move locations.
ANSC 345: Animal Health Management (Rod Allrich)
For this class, I just needed to take another ANSC course. This class was practically the same as any other Rod Allrich course. We learned how to keep animals healthy and basically many different common diseases of animals. From his website, we would get brought to a page talking about some disease or medical problem that could potentially happen and have to write a 1-page summary/reflection. This happened each week. He still did in person quizzes with statements of fact. Once again, students had to make videos/presentations for the class to present on some problem. There was no final exam. Did not learn too much from this one, but it was a great space filler and GPA booster.
ANSC 481: Contemporary Issues in ANSC (Barry Delks)
This is essentially the final push for ANSC students. As seniors, you take this course to prepare you for the real world. Lectures were given by guests who the professor brought in. They would talk about their specific company, career, or niche and any issues they were seeing there plus how to stop them. The professor would then have groups get together to discuss ways to fix the problems and have the guest comment on what was said. There were also assignments to be done, but they were very easy. They were just things to make sure you were on track for a job and/or graduation (having a 30-sec intro, making a cover letter, redoing your resumé). Part of the class was also just attending the career fair.
STAT 512: Applied Regression Analysis (Tiantian Qin)
Like my other grad level stat course, I absolutely loved this one, too. This class was a DIST course. This class solely focused on regressions (simple linear and multiple linear regressions). Topics for the course started with the basics (terms of regression like betas, Xs, SSE, SSR, SST, and diagnostics) and moved to more difficult content (lack-of-fit-testing, global f-testing, transformations, ANOVA, marginal effect, coefficient of partial determination, multicollinearity, and more). I found the content interesting and it was fun to learn about. Nothing was too difficult and could always be asked about through office hours. There were homework assignments that corresponded with the lectures that were due every other week. Again, take the time. The course also used R coding for everything that was done. The course also had a couple exams to do. But the biggest thing was the regression project. This required a group of students to get together, find a set of data, and use it to form a regression analysis. There was a lot of coding involved, but it was fun parsing through and wrangling data.
MGMT 375: Real Estate Law (Cecelia Harper)
This course has been super personal and fun to take. This is one of my last courses for the Real Estate minor and I am glad to have taken it. The course goes over any and all laws that relate to real estate in some way. The course talked about property rights, subsurface rights, common laws, easements on land, financing/lending, prenuptial agreements and other contracts. Most grades come from exams, though. There were 3 during the semester plus the final. All exams (except the final) were open note and book. The final we were allowed a 1-page cheat sheet that was front and back. The only grades that did not come from exams were from the contracts we drafted. You create your own lease agreement and purchase agreement, then pair with someone to mesh them together for a new one of each. I think the course is particularly made tho by the professor. She is a practicing real estate lawyer who knows what she is talking about. She would set it up so the class was very personal and we each asked her questions. It was interesting because she could have stories about clients to connect things from class. She would always entertain questions. There was no extra credit, except for when she would randomly do attendance. The course structure could be changing quite a bit now, tho.
MGMT 43901: Real Estate Investment & Development (Michael Eriksen)
The other last course for my real estate minor. This class was a step away from what I thought it was going to be. This course is geared toward commercial development and the business side, as I felt. There was nothing really said about personal/residential property. The course topics included an overview of real estate, ways/types of investment, estimation of cash flows for commercial real estate and finance terms associated, providing loans/financing, the roles of a developer, and taxes. The course didn’t have many plain assignments. These were Excel files with attached questions and instructions. If you could follow the instructions you did well, plus the assignments built on each other, except the last one - this one used ARGUS software. The majority of the work was spent on a case competition (go figure lol). Students were put into groups to select a plot of land to develop for some commercial purpose and provide the financials, timeline, and reasoning for the decision. There were several required tasks to be done for this assignment, plus a presentation at the end. There was no final exam, but there were 2 midterms. You could use an excel sheet with notes throughout, tho. The professor was good. He catered to his students and asked questions about how we thought the class was going. A good class to take.
BCHM 421: R For Molecular Biosciences (Pete Pascuzzi)
I took this class because my previous classes had made me really like working in R. I took the class to continue on with that. If you do not have a basic understanding of R, it may be a slight learning curve. The class only met on Wednesday and Friday for 2 hours. There wasn’t a lecture every class, but there was usually some work to be done. All assignments were done through R and could typically be finished in the class period. If this wasn’t possible, it could usually be finished the next class. The class just showed different things in R, from graphics and data wrangling to how to process gene ontology. There were homeworks and labs, with labs being more involved. There was a midterm that was open resource and a project. The project was done at the very end with groups who put together code from previous lectures/labs to create an RShiny document. The class did have a final, again open resource, but any graduating seniors did not have to take the final. There was an opportunity for extra credit by creating an R notebook for all your notes for functions and lines of code. The professor was also nice, helpful, and willing to put in effort to match you.
ANSC 351: Meat Science (Yuan Kim)
This class is basically just biology plus some extra info for meat processing. If you have taken muscle biology (or just bio) you will do well. The class does have some busy work, tho. The first part of the class was solely muscle biology. After this, the class went into meat quality (including analysis, factors affecting quality, etc.), parts of production (packaging, freezing, heating), slaughter and that process, then into meat safety. The content was interesting to learn and easy to take in. The class did have several assignments. After every class was a lecture quiz, each week there was a reflection, and every so often there was a case study. Case studies involved reading a case and providing a response to address the cause of a problem and fix it. The whole semester, there was a project involving some topic in meat science (novel tech, meat in diet, lab-grown meat, alternatives, etc.). Groups got together at the beginning of the semester to make a decision on the topic. Then, throughout the semester, groups met with TAs, wrote drafts of a paper, critiqued other student papers, and made a presentation to show the class. Throughout the semester, you have to work 2 shifts at the butcher block or write a giant essay on a book, too. The class also required 4 exams and a final. If you showed up to every class, you were able to skip the final. Dr. Kim loves the topic and wants you to learn, but most of the grading will be done by TAs.

Synopsis: Young Bart Collins, lulled to sleep by the monotony of his piano lessons, dreams of a castle ruled by his piano teacher, the eccentric Dr. Teriwilliker. Dr. T is determined to prove that his "Happy Fingers Method" of teaching piano is the best method in the world. Having banished all other musical instruments to the dungeon, Dr. T lures 500 reluctant little boys to perform in a colossal concert on the grandest grand piano ever built. In his effort to escape, Bart comes in contact with some of the strangest characters imaginable - Siamese twins on roller skates, a human drum and the most memorable villain since the "Grinch". Filled with surreal landscapes and tongue-twisting rhymes, for which Dr. Seuss is famous, this is a movie children and their parents will love to watch again and again. THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR. T is fantasy entertainment at its best.
