2024.05.13 04:07 Jaytiss Elysian Pilgrim

Someone was saying that I should share it here. I'm working on getting a Pilgrim Noire as well soon. I'll be comparing it pretty soon.
ā€œNot a Baby Anniliatorā€
This is an interesting iem. A lot of people have called this a baby Anniliator, but itā€™s not itā€™s different itā€™s itā€™s own monster. So there is a hint of disappointment to my ears as I want to say ā€œHey, this is just like the anniliator!ā€ There is a trend to jump on the bandwagon. I could throw shade and try to call others out in a way, but I want this iem review to start off with some simple statement about what this iem is, and is not. This is a satisfying iem, that is well worth the price, but it isnā€™t exactly what an Anniliator is.
This is a purchased set. I had to move a few headphones around to be able to afford this set. While purchasing or samples can effect how a reviewer might want to review, I try to remain unbiased when possible.
This is a personal product and I am fully happy with my purchase. I really enjoy this iem. I was able to demo it at Can Jam 2023. I would never recommend buying any iem past say 200 dollars if you havenā€™t demoed it first. Maybe your limit is higher, but thatā€™s my default recommendation to all. I try to tell the story of purchase or acquisition whenever I buy an iem. I asked Hifigo about this iem and told them that I was interested in reviewing it, I did buy this iem with my own cash and had to move some gear around to afford this.
Let me share what music that I listen to:
Song Choice: Tidal list here:
I listen to a wide variety of music. I pick the songs because of various reasons. But I picture myself locked away like Andy Dufresne from Shawshank blasting music and shut off from the world. Itā€™s a blissful image.
The Marriage of Figaro -The opera song from Shawshank Redemption, terrible recording but fun and gets me in the mood to listen to music.
O mio Babino caro -This is a modern less operatic version but a song with great female vocals.
Video Rigoletto - ā€œLa donna e mobileā€ Sung by one of the three Tenors, great song for high-performing male vocals. Pavarotti is the greatest classic singer maybe ever. Fight me!
Iron man - The sound at the beginning is hard to make sound great, great drums, and cymbals, and if done right it feels like an old-school band.
I Will Survive (1981 recording, I like her voice, and the old vocals, the drums, and various natural instruments really make this a favorite for me.
There is a light That never goes out - Smiths ( A classic, I just love it. Itā€™s mellow, and I can tell a lot of the tuning if this song is done right.)
Jump (I like how the sound effects are in this!)
Star Child Someone recommended this song to me, and I like how funky it sounds and has nice vocals and a mix of music and things going on.
Dicke Titten Ramstein The beginning is amazing and the bass hits hard. Great song. I love rock and metal. The German language fascinates me
Master of Puppets: Very fast song. Helps me determine if the driver can keep up.
This is a newer version of my 10 favorite songs that also work for audiofile music.
This is a copy of a bunch of good audiofile music. Some are on my favorites, but all are great to test headphone tracks. (70+)
This is my favorite overall music. 300+ songs (needs to be edited a bit)
Bass (20-60 Sub Bass, 60-250 Hz Mid Bass)
The details of the bass is strong and everything sounds right on it. The bass seems well-controlled and fun. One thing the Pilgrim isnā€™t is lean, it has a nice tonality that is very suiting and pleasant. I do find the quality of the bass is correct. I feel percussions on it sound great. The iem is clean and lush even in the bass.
The Above is my Targe with the Bass only on the Pilgrim. Itā€™s a nice fit!
Midrange (250 HZ to 800 HZ Low Mids, 600-200 Hz Mids, 2000-5000Hz Upper Mids)
The timber and tone is great on this iem, people have described it as near perfect or class leading and they arenā€™t joking. It is basically perfect for what I want out of an iem. . It has nothing that will often plague other iems. No weird plastic feeling, voices sound right with no plastic feeling.
I donā€™t find it shouty but fun, smoothe and enjoyable. The Timbre of this iem is lush and energetic. This comes across slightly energetic and U shaped, but is still a smooth listen and very enjoyable.
Treble (5000- 10000 Trebble/Highs, 10000 ++ HZ Upper Trebble & Air)
The 5-6k region which is still fairly accurate on a 711 coupler is very hot for me. This might be an issue with some people. I personally prefer sets that have this down a lot more. Is this an issue, no in fact in just reviewed a set that had a peak around that level. But for what I am used to the 5-6k region comes across very bright.
The treble is a good part of this set and this iem has great detail and sparkle for me. No issues here. Iā€™m able to game, listen to music, and a podcast all at once with this iem. It has incredible details that come across in the treble. Looking at the frequency response I would think it would sound neutral or boring without the 3k spike, but I enjoyed it. All the music that I listen to sounds great and I feel that it has a wide beautiful soundstage.
Gaming
Gaming is great on this iem, itā€™s cozy and has a world class feeling of fit to me. Details sparkle for me, but the treble and space arenā€™t much better than the Hexa, it is fairly similar and on about the same level. It has a beautiful open and clean sound. The stage isnā€™t too wide, but just right. Detail retrieval during fights is immaculate, and the imaging vertically and horizontally is fantastic. It has great imaging and a good sense of where I am.
Shell -
The shell is pretty, it fits great and I find it an exceptional fit. Iā€™m not a huge fan of metallic shells but this iem feels great in ear. It feels pretty great in ear. I had some minor concerns over the shell of the iem, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Case- The case have an odd feeling and doesnā€™t feel as good in the hands that it looks. It has a beautiful look, but the inside has a ridge aroud that it doesnā€™t feel super durable. Almost like a cardboard ridge that could be destroyed very easily. Overall itā€™s a nice case that feels and looks great. I took it to work to do some testing and it worked great for my use.
Cable- The cable comes in 3.5 or 4.4. I would recommend to chose carefully as it is a pennaconn cable and those are expensive to come by. Overall the cable is very nice and premium feeling. I was concerned about the cable. But it feel durable in hand and thick.
Tip Selection - The tips are Spinfits W1, they are the same used in the anniliator. I found myself using Eletech Baroque tips, as the iem was having a slight issue staying in my ear.
Comparisons:
Vs Anni 2023
Ok, vs the iem of the same brand that, I own and love. The bass is better a tad more rich and organic, the upper treble isnā€™t as natural, but itā€™s close, itā€™s so close. The midbass in the anniliator is much better, and the overall natural tone of the anniliator is better by a lot to my ears. This doesnā€™t mean the Pilgrim is a bad iem, but to me it just a strong iem that isnā€™t exactly perfect. Some people might even like The Pilgrim better as the sound is a little bit more organic. I always say to demo anything over say 200 dollars when possible, and take everything with a grain of salt.
It amplifies the slightly odd fun treble of the anniliator up to 10. Some people might be reminded of how bright the annilator sounds, but to my ears the Pilgrim is brighter, almost plastically so. Itā€™s a unique experience. Again, the Pilgrim is a very good iem, Iā€™m using my audiophile microscope here. But using that, the Pilgrim is brighter, the Annilaitor has better vocals, bass, and more balanced treble with a better fit. It by no means takes ā€œAnniā€™sā€ place to me in the market. Despite being a very solid and nice product.
Vs Hype 4. (The similar price)
Letā€™s compare the iem that Iā€™m reviewing vs an iem that is of the same price. I think the mids of hype 4 are slightly better. I like the eargain region of the Hype 4 better. I wouldntā€™ call the hype 4 much better, just a different colorization of sound. I think the Hype 4 has a more mainstream tuning for those looking for something similar to JM-1 curve.
The Pilgrim is brighter, but to my ears sounds more technical and right. But it is a close comparison as their graphs are somewhat similar. They trade blows and are both very good iems. At their prices I recommend both, one isnā€™t better than the other. The Hype 4 would be my recommendation as I like the resin shell a bit more, and I think the sound is a little less colored. The Pilgrim is slightly flavored and fun, and an overall masterful sound for itā€™s price. Like if I wanted to recommend to someone in the hobby who had only 400 dollars Iā€™d say go Pilgrim easy, but to someone who wanted a one and done set to ride off into the sunset, Iā€™d go Hype 4.
VS MEGA 5 EST
This is the that hype tuning that many are searching for. If you want to experience that hype tuning the Xuan NV might be the better source for you. The Pilgrim is a very good set with slightly recessed Male Vocals and female vocals, but it is still very nice. Obviously, demo both, but if I had to recommend one over the other Iā€™d go with Pilgrim due to its much cheaper price. I really didnā€™t like the Mega 5 EST, but donā€™t find it a poor iem, just dull. The Pilgrim isnā€™t dull and has better bass and better air and technicalities. The Mega 5 est is more neutral and plain and lacks anything of excitement to me. It feels like a iem made in a factory by robots and doesnā€™t get me exciting. Just way to neutral and bland.
But again, demo everything first.
VS Aful 5
Similiar tonality in someways. It is much better than the P5. But has some similarities and it is an option that gets you pretty close to the tonality of this iem. Personally I think the Aful 5 might be a better value, but the Pilgrim is a great set if you can afford it. If you canā€™t and only have money for a cheaper set, the Aful Performer 5 is my recommendation at the cheaper price point.
Sound - Final Impressions
While this iem is very good, and almost perfect especially at itā€™s price it doesnā€™t fall into the category of ā€œBLIND BUY THIS NAO!!!ā€, but more of yeah itā€™s pretty good, enjoyable, but not an Annilator. I welcome the day an iem takes or beats the 2023 Elysian Annilator for me, but this aint it. Itā€™s a super good iem, that I would feel is competitive with itā€™s peers and either class leading or better. I recently review the hype 4 and loved it. I think the Pilgrim is on par with the Hype 4, and maybe better sonically. I think both of these 400ish dollar iems are better than MANY 1000+ sets that Iā€™ve listened to. But again, all my opinions are based on my ears and your mileage might vary.
Recommended EQ: I use Peace APO to EQ on the PC. This EQ is done to my preference. I recently set up a preference curve on My Squig. So for at least iems, I can use my own graphs now. Please feel free to use the measurements as you want.. Jaytiss.squig.link
Overall this is an amazing iem that could easily be a game for most. The goal for me with an iem is to have an that doesnā€™t need EQ. This iem, does sound better to me with this eq, more neutral and less colored.

Gifting/who is it for: I think this is a nice hifi iem to gift to someone, it is an expensive iem but overall itā€™s a solid package that sounds fantastic. Itā€™s a handsome shell, good looking cable, but it is a little too white for my take. If price wasnā€™t a concern Iā€™d probably consider the Noire due to a superior color and $350 dollar included cable. But the packaging of the Pilgrim is very much so on point and very enjoyable.
I do think this is a worth mainstream iem for the masses and gives you a taste of the Elysian sound. It may or may not be the best dollar-for-dollar iem for your tastes, but it is an exceptional product that is exceedingly enjoyable from a packing sound and build quality. I have no doubt these shells will surivie the Zombie Apocalypse.
Pairing: I used a Quidelix 5k for mobile, my dongle Dac iBasso DC04 for my laptop, and my JDS labs Element III MK2 Boosted for my Desktop PC. I also tried the iem briefly on the Apple dongle as well. This iem had no issues being driven. Typically I only find overears to really have a hard time being driven and maybe some planar iems. (I personally am not a huge mmcx or planar fan.)

Summary-
Iā€™ve recently redone my ranking system to include a gaming/comfort quality, an overall rating along with Crinacle style rating. I am also releasing a video on Youtube at the
I have a Youtube review on my small channel if anyone wants to check it out.

2024.05.13 02:50 BeeSuch77222 1997 and after is Gen-Z. Stop changing it youngins

It is interesting to see younger people changing the generally accepted 1981-1996 range for Millennials to suit their needs.
The Z comes from following 'Gen-Y' which comes after X. The 'Millennial' concept didn't really get strongly defined until the tech boom of the late 1990s as the pace of change driven by the WORLD WIDE WEB (Information SuperHighway) which 2000 was a real peak (the rate of adoption having peaked and stabilized from that point). Millennial replaced the Gen Y term.
The internet is the backbone, but it is the WWW era that was more widely available from around 96-97, with 98-99 seeing exponential adoption and use. In 1995-96, you wouldn't really see any sort of web page sites for mainstream stuff, and or, it was considered cutting edge stuff which most people didn't know or it seemed alienish to access. But 1997 (but especially 1998, it was absolutely mainstream).
This is also backed up factually, objectively and statistically with the exponential rise in the NASDAQ, IPO valuations, etc.
1997 Borns earliest memories would be during this 1999-2000 time.
Objectively and statistically, 1998 is absolutely the game changing year, but really, later 1997 as well. Life changes were measured in quarters. Not years. The concept of a realistically having a personal email was virtually non-existent before 1997 for the masses really.
Basically, 1997 could be year 0, akin to BC-AD, but its 'Before WWW/After WWW'.
Not gradient changes in technology like streaming, social media apps, etc. But that the WWW would actually change how we think and live. Ordering products, banking, etc. That literally became mainstream thoughtfully possible during that 1997 period onward.
This coming from a 45 year old, that absolutely got impacted by the changes, life choices made (such as which study program to choose from for school.. it was a major change then, vs what was possible when we were in Grade 9-10). Then there is empirical experience such as 1 year, it was 100% phone calls when connecting or socializing... 1-1.5 year later, the internet became as or more important to reach out to someone.

2024.05.11 08:53 LekhaTopil Waze User Churn Prediction: Random Forest vs. XGBoost

šŸŒ³Random Forest is akin to a Dense Forest where diverse specialists work together harmoniously to tackle complex problems. On the other hand, XGBoost behaves like a high-performance engine, constantly learning from mistakes and accelerating toward optimal solutions by fine-tuning itself to minimize errors and maximize predictive power. Both are robust and advanced algorithms used for building predictive models šŸ“Š
However, in the realm of machine learning, sometimes our models don't perform as expected. During my project, some features that exhibited strong correlations with user churn in exploratory data analysis (EDA) didn't translate into predictive power during feature importance analysis, appearing lower in the feature importance chartšŸ¤” This could be attributed to complex feature interactions and other factors.
In my recent project, I used machine learning to predict user churn for a Waze navigation appšŸŒ. I built Random Forest and XGBoost models, splitting the data into training, validation, and test sets and fine-tuning with GridSearchCV šŸ“Š.
Despite the model's performance falling short of expectations, it establishes a robust foundation for further exploration and improvements in predicting user behavior. šŸš€

2024.05.09 15:04 Captgouda24 Were the Cubs hurt by not playing night games?

Were the Cubs hurt by not playing night games?
Hi everyone. I'm lifelong Cubs fan, and I noticed that no one had hitherto actually analyzed this. (IRL I'm an econ phd candidate). Enjoy!
The first night game was played in 1935 by the Cincinnati Reds; its popularity exploded after the end of wartime rationing. By 1950, Edwin Oā€™Connor wrote in the Atlantic that ā€œ95 per cent of all teams in organized baseball play night baseball almost exclusively. Of the 1232 games to be played in the major leagues this year, more than a third will be played after dark; during the months of May, June, July, and August, such teams as the St. Louis Cardinals, the Washington Senators, the Boston Braves, and the St. Louis Browns have voluntarily scheduled not a single daytime game.ā€ (Oā€™Connor, 1950). Due to at first refusing to adopt the technology, and then being barred due to neighborhood bylaws, the Chicago Cubs were alone in totally refusing to play night games ā€“ they did not play their first until 1988, decades after everyone else. Even today, the Cubs are limited to 35 night games a year (out of 81 home games), which is substantially less than the average number of night games (which is 54) (Yellon, 2021).
The Chicago Cubs were also very bad for a very long time. From 1908 to 2016, they did not win the World Series. In fact, they did not even win the pennant from 1945 on. They became known for choking down the stretch, such as in the great collapse of 1969, when the Cubs went 8 and 17 in the month of September to lose an 8 game lead to the New York Mets. Between 1969 and 1980, the Cubs had a .516 win percentage before the All-Star break, and a .450 win percentage afterwards. (Bernstein, 2008)
Many people thought the two were connected ā€” the Cubs, having to play out in the hot summer Chicago weather, were simply worn down by the end of the season. General manager Dallas Green is quite explicit in his 1985 letter to fans about this; one of the reasons why lights are needed is to ā€œavoid the heat and dog days of summer which, even though we won last year, puts our players at a disadvantage.ā€ (Green, 1985). However, there has not been, to this point, an empirical exploration of whether this is actually true.
I test whether such a connection exists. If playing day games when others played night games caused late season collapses, then the winning percentage (relative to the other months in the season) should be higher in the opening months and lower in the closing months. What is more, I can argue that this relationship is causal ā€“ comparing within the year controls for unobservables, and there is no other plausible argument why they specifically would be worse relative to other teams towards the end of the year rather than the beginning.
I compiled the games won and lost for each month of every season, from 2023 to 1906. I dropped the Covid season, 2020, and the two strike shortened seasons of 1994 and 1981 before I looked at the data, both because they were substantially different in nature in the other seasons, and to forestall the possibility of p-hacking. What we should expect to see, if there was a real effect, is that the win percentages by month will not be significantly different from the other months before night games, will be significantly different (such that it is higher in the beginning of the season, and lower towards the end), and either return to no significant difference or have an attenuated version of the effect (as the Cubs still play fewer night games). I will also look at the win/loss record in multi month blocks, such as spring vs the end of the season. Indeed, breaking the data down into March+April+May, vs August+September+October, provides the clearest demonstration of the effect weā€™re looking for.
Results
The most important result is in table 1. The monthly win percentage went down at the end of the season compared to the beginning, but only in the period where the rest of the league was playing night games. This explains a small part of the variance (note the low R-squared) but is strongly significant.

Table 1: Regression of win percentage in March, April, and May per year at 0, compared to August, September, and October, in the years between 1949 and 1989.
Represented graphically, it is this:

Graph 1: Graph of win percentage in March, April, and May per year at 0, compared to August, September, and October, in the years between 1949 and 1989
Youā€™ll note that the result is not significant at a 95% confidence interval if we are using a two-sided test, but is if we are using a one-sided test, as our hypothesis would predict. (Table 2) Running the same test on the period before widespread night games, and the period after the Cubs adopted night games themselves, gives us a null. (Table 21 and Table 23) These are done as t-tests, rather than linear regressions, for convenience.
https://preview.redd.it/f9vhi5a3fezc1.png?width=1068&format=png&auto=webp&s=eacc2706c5e53a753e6dbdf221135fd8c9ce06ed
Table 2: Difference in means between win percentage in March, April, and May per year, compared to August, September, and October, in the years between 1949 and 1989.
ā€œObsā€ is the number of seasons in the sample (1981 was dropped), and ā€œmeanā€ is the average win percentage during that time of year. In the spring they won 48% of games ā€” in the later parts of the season, they won 44%. The ā€œPr(T>t)ā€ is giving the odds out of 1 that that difference would occur by chance, if the two values were in fact the same. Given that it would only happen every 1 in 40 times by chance, we can reject the idea that they performed worse purely by chance.
Breaking down by month reveals that this is driven by an overperformance in May, and underperformance in September. (Tables 10 and Table 14). Meanwhile, tests month by month show an underperformance in May, in the period before the adoption of night lights (Table 4), and an overperformance in July after universal nightlights (Table 18), if we use a one sided hypothesis test in both instances. A two sided hypothesis test would not reveal a significant difference, however. (We are using one sided hypothesis tests in the prior case because we have a theoretical reason to favor one side or the other, determined long before we looked at the data). The complete t-tests by month can be found in the tables section, where all of the months or specifications not mentioned gave null results.
Conclusions:
The Cubs really were harmed by their late adoption of night lights. The effect is small, but statistically significant. While the primary reason the Cubs were unsuccessful lay in the cheapness of the Wrigley family and the Tribune Company and the notoriously poor farm system, the wearying effects of playing in the summer heat contributed to their late season collapses. If they were harmed before, then they are likely harmed now by the limits on the number of night games played, and should consider playing the full complement of night games. However, given the small effect size, it may be worthwhile to retain the now iconic Wrigley day games, which are often well-attended. Certainly this could give some statistical heft to any arguments by present Cubs ownership that the relative dearth of night games is to their detriment.

Review

I thought you'd appreciate it if I gave you the impression I knew what was happening. We could panic of course, but where would that get us? ā€“ The Doctor, to Adric
In many ways, Season 18 is the slow transition away from the 4th Doctor era to the 5th. Full Circle introduced Adric. We've just seen the departure of two core characters from the Graham Williams era in Romana and K-9. And now, it's time to introduce two new characters: Nyssa, and the Tremas Master.
Funny thing is, that wasn't the original plan. For the Master, Producer John Nathan-Turner wanted to bring back an older element of the show around this time, to soften the blow of Tom Baker leaving at the end of the season. He initially contacted Elizabeth Sladen (who played Sarah Jane Smith), then Louise Jameson (who played Leela) to see if they'd be interested in returning. Sladen rejected the idea immediately. Jameson was a bit more interested, but ultimately turned Nathan-Turner down when he said he'd want her to stick around through to the end of Season 19, which she didn't want to do. Eventually, instead of bringing back a companion, JNT decided to bring back the Master instead, having him stand in for a character named Mogen as the main villain of the piece, and using a plot element called "The Source" to revitalize him. As for Nyssa, she was originally meant to be a one-off, but JNT liked the character and suggested she stick around. As such, writer Johnny Byrne retained the intellectual property rights to her character.
And so Keeper of Traken, originally meant to be a completely standard story, turns into a really important one. The introduction of a new companion (even though, like with Adric in Full Circle you wouldn't guess that Nyssa would be sticking around based on the ending of the story), and a brand new incarnation of The Master ensures this. And fortunately, it's a pretty good one.
I do have some complaints though.
For one thing, Keeper goes in really hard on a good versus evil dichotomy. I'm not talking about the way that most Doctor Who stories do. The Daleks are evil, but they are not physical manifestations of capital "E" Evil. But in Keeper of Traken we are introduced to the world of Traken by having its ruler, the titular Keeper explain that anything evil that arrives on Traken is essentially frozen in place. The main of villain of the story, known as the Melkur for most of its runtime before The Reveal, was apparently so evil that he can't evil move his head a little, and only manages to to affect his surroundings by creating a few extra weeds. And that'sā€¦fine. Not really my thing, but not something I'd complain about this early in a review if not for the fact that Keeper of Traken is also going for a sort of Garden of Eden idea. The Melkur is equivalent to the serpent in that story, who tricks a gullible woman into sin.
And those two ideas don't work great together. Kassia is presented to us, at least at first, as genuinely good woman, pillar of her society and one of the Consuls that form the core of Traken's government. She knows that Melkur is capital "E" Evil, the first lines we hear from her are an acknowledgment of this. Soā€¦how is she tricked exactly? Well, I'll get into it more when I talk about her character specifically, but suffice to say, it doesn't quite work.
I'm also not entirely sure what Traken exactly is. It's presented as a utopian society, with that utopia apparently maintained by people "being nice to each other", as the Doctor describes it. That effect seems to be somehow maintained by the Keeper, that the Keeper somehow is responsible for the general air of goodness that is maintained on the planet. It seems that as the Keeper weakens, more selfish and self-centered motivations start entering the picture. That would serve an explanation for money-focused Foster (essentially a guardsman) Neman as well as the general buffoonery of the ruling Council. It does come with the unfortunate implication of the Source and the Keeper acting as sort of behavior controlling elements, a bit like the Conscience in The Keys of Marinus. I'm not sure that that was the intention though (I think it's the most reasonable read of the story, but I'm not wholly convinced), so I'm not going to take this line down to the point that I did with Marinus, but if that is the case then there's all sort of concerns that should be raised.
But the other side of this is that the idea of Traken as a paradise planet irrevocably changed by the events of the story is a compelling one. The Eden narrative has its problems but the idea that once paradise is corrupted it can never be returned is still an interesting one. I have my problems with how Kassia is written, but I will say that the rest of the cast does pretty well. The slowly built mystery around the Melkur is effective. The Adric/Doctor duo isā€¦weirdly enjoyable. And, while it took a bit, I found myself really getting into the drama of the story by around part three. The fight over the Source and who gets to be Keeper definitely draws you in.
Getting into that cast then, I think I actually want to start with that Adric/Doctor duo. It's worth noting that Matthew Waterhouse and Tom Baker never got along in any capacity. But you wouldn't know it from this story. In fact I'd argue this is the most energized we've seen Baker all season, possibly because, while he might have missed her, not having his turbulent relationship with Lalla Ward constantly a factor presumably made Baker more focused on the task at hand. I'm still not too keen on Adric, and while I think he's over-hated as a companion, I'll never truly grow to like the character. But I think he's at his best here where focus is put on him acting as the Doctor's pupil. Adric is a character who always thinks he knows best, but by this point has developed a healthy respect for the Doctor's greater experience, meaning that he generally listens to the Doctor. It helps keep the character's less enjoyable aspects in check. Sure, he can still be a bit arrogant, but there's a greater authority he'll concede to, while still being able to call the Doctor out on his occasional nonsense.
The Doctor meanwhile is in kind of an odd place this story. There's the return of the Master to deal with of course (more on that later) which, while it takes until episode 4 for him to discover, really energizes the Doctor at that point. And his attempts to mentor Adric really play into the 4th Doctor's strengths, since he's been busy the last 5 seasons mentoring Leela and Romana in their own ways. More than that though he feels surprisingly at home on Traken. I don't know what it is, considering typically he's the one overthrowing false utopias, he seems to be able to navigate this crumbling but still very real utopia, until the utopia crumbles to the point that it's no longer a real utopia. As the story progresses we get one of my favorite late era 4th Doctor scenes where he confronts Tremas. Tremas is holding back the plans to Traken's power source, called the Source, back because only Consuls are supposed to see them, a duty which he is sworn to. The Doctor's response is absolutely scathing: "Well, of course you swore an oath! Now you have to choose: your personal honor against the safety of all of Traken." It's a perfect line, which really underlines the kind of character the Doctor is.
And we meet a new companion this story too. Or, I suppose it would be more accurate to say that we meet a new character who will become a companion next story. As mentioned up above Nyssa was not originally meant to be a companion and you can kind of tell that in this script she's not really being set up for any long term involvement with the show. The basics of her character in this story are that she's incredibly loyal to her father Tremas and that she's quite intelligent. She does mount a one-woman (or I guess one-girl, she is a teenager after all) rescue operation of the Doctor and Tremas while they're in prison, showing some pretty impressive levels of bravery and willingness to pull the trigger on a laser pistol (set to stun, I assume). If she had been a one-off character she would have been a memorable one, but not one that would have necessarily gotten the kind of love that, say, Duggan in City of Death. It's a solid enough debut for a new character, but you wouldn't know Nyssa was set to be a new companion from how this story ends as, like Adric in Full Circle there's not indication at the end of the story that she's ever going to travel with the Doctor.
And as for characters aligned with the Doctor and Adric, Tremas really gets a lot more attention than his daughter. Played by Anthony Ainley who will, as a result from this story go on to play the next incarnation of the Master, Tremas is one of the Council who at the beginning of the story is set to become the next Keeper of Traken. It is definitely odd that for almost this entire story Ainley is playing a pure as pure can be good guy. I'm so used to him as the Master that it almost reads as insincere to me, but I know for a fact that's just because I'm used to him as the Master. His performance is actually quite strong, and he has good chemistry with Tom Baker, as the two are working together for much of the story. His character is defined by nobility and a strict moral code, which ultimately does get challenged somewhat in that scene with the Doctor I mentioned up above, but does lead to him being one of the more admirable one-off characters we've had on this show in quite some time. Which may have been intentional, as showing the Master taking over the body of such an admirable man heightens the tragedy.
Oh, and his wife is very important in this story. As I kind of implied up above Kassia is definitely this story's weak link as her character just never quite makes sense. While her love for her husband is her primary motivation, they share very few scenes together after their wedding scene that opens up the story. And honestly we never get the sense that Tremas is really in love with her, which leaves that element of the story feeling very artificial. Instead the focus is on her role as the person whose role is to look after the "Melkur" frozen in the garden. We see her beginning that job as an adolescent and continuing on well into adulthood as she presumably rose in the ranks to become a Consul. The idea, I think, is that she's supposed to develop an affection for the Melkur even though intellectually she knows it's evil through this process. While I absolutely believe that could happen, as I mentioned up above I don't quite buy that it explains her actions through the story.
See, Kassia really doesn't want Tremas to become Keeper as it will take him away from her. It's a selfish thought that the Melkur exploits to get her to do his bidding. Andā€¦again that's the problem. Kassia goes way too far in this. At some point a character that is supposed to be a good person should come to understand that framing two random strangers (ie the Doctor and Adric) for murder is taking things a bit far, especially since Traken appears to have a rarely used death penalty for these occasions (of course it does, Doctor Who is pretty much incapable of not using the phrase "the penalty is death" in every other story around this time). Eventually the Melkur gives Kassia a collar that allows him to control her actions from that point on, but I would say it happens way too late in the story. Having the Melkur manipulate Kassia into putting on the collar is probably as far as this should have gone. Instead Kassia reads a lot more evil than I think she was intended. The idea seems always to have been that she was mislead but still basically good, but this doesn't really vibe with how things actually play out.
Of course, the Melkur is a master manipulator. Emphasis on the "master". Yes the "Melkur" is actually the Master, the odd "Melkur" body just being the Master's disguised TARDIS (which later also appears as a grandfather clock). Geoffrey Beevers plays the Decayed Master originally played by Peter Pratt in The Deadly Assassin. I have no idea why Pratt wasn't brought back. While I do think Beevers does a slightly better job with the part, Pratt was by no means bad, and I've never heard anything suggesting that John Nathan-Turner or anyone else working on the show disliked Pratt's performance, or that Nathan-Turner tried to get Pratt but couldn't for some reason. JNT, or course, wanted to bring in a new incarnation of the Master, which was part of the point of this story, but he clearly cared enough about maintaining some continuity that he wanted to bring in the same Master, to the point that they brought back the same costume used in Assassin.
That was supposed to include the mask Pratt had worn, but the rubber mask was in an unusable state, so instead makeup was used. And that's probably for the best. The makeup looks so much more part of Beevers' face than the mask was for Pratt. Beevers is still very much stuck working under a lot of very difficult to act through makeup, but there's at least a little more facial flexibility here. The Master's whole plan in this story is to fix all this though. He wants access to the source to rejuvenate himself. While his ultimate goal of controlling the Source doesn't go to plan he seems to have accumulated enough residual Source energy to take control of Tremas' bodyā€¦and de-age it at least 20 years. Thus begins Anthony Ainley's tenure as the Master on Doctor Who which will last until the literal final episode of the Classic era.
Which is possibly why this story feels like the true start of the John Nathan-Turner era. Early JNT stories still had Romana and K-9, character that just kind of feel out of place in JNT's version of the show. That's not to say that those stories were bad, but rather that the JNT era really couldn't start in earnest until they were gone. Like the actual start of the JNT era, I would argue that this starts that era off well. Keeper of Traken is highly flawed. The story's ideas feel in conflict with each other, and Kassia, who serves as essentially the secondary villain of the story, doesn't really work. But there's a compelling plot here, and the rest of the secondary cast works quite well. Season 18 continues on a strong run of stories.
Score: 7/10

2024.05.07 22:28 WereTakingWater I watched and ranked all 96 Best Picture Oscar winners.

I was watching the movie Babylon toward the end of 2023 and started to wonder about what movies were popular at that time in America. After looking at the list of best picture winners and nominees back to 1928, I realized I had seen very few of them. After renting a few of the early winners, I decided to keep going and watch the whole list. I watched them in a completely random order, first so I wouldnā€™t disadvantage the early years, and second because I was dependent upon the library. I paid very little to do this and requested almost all of them through the Columbus Library. It took about 6 months to complete.
These are my rankings. I initially used tiers for categories before I started to individually rank. These are my opinions, and I would not change many of them by more than a few positions. I am considering a few other lists to spin off from this, like less popular hidden gems or movies that should have won. One thing that shocked me was how often subjects that I considered modern issues came up in these older movies. For example: addiction in The Lost Weekend, Antisemitism in Gentlemenā€™s Agreement, Indigenous discrimination in Cimmaron, and political intimidation riots in All The Kingā€™s Men (gave me Jan 6 flashbacks). Somethings were poorly portrayed, and there is obviously rampant racism in some movies, but overall, it gave me a greater respect for American cinema and overall movie history.
Update 1: I appreciate all the comments, good and bad. I didn't expect this much of a response so it was exciting to see. The only things I disagree with are the comments saying never to watch certain things. This is all art, it's meant to be viewed, good or bad.
I tried to fix the weird formatting, the original draft definitely did not look like that, so I was surprised after I submitted.
There are a couple movies I want to go back and watch again; Ordinary People, Amadeus, Forest Gump, and On The Waterfront. Maybe I missed something with these and need to look again. I still think Oppenheimer was a great movie, and Nomadland wasn't. Not budging on these ones.
I have nothing against Moonlight, it was heartbreaking to watch the loneliness that kept following him every step. I just didn't like the ending and was hoping for something more definitive and it seemed anticlimactic to me.

This is the full code so I hope someone can help me with it. I'm trying to move the .mp4 files from inside the Featurettes folders to the main movie folders. Each mp4 file is titled the same that is why I don't want to do this in bulk since there all titled Trailer and each file will need to be renamed eventually so I figured I would like to move them first and then delete the folders from inside the main movie folders and then just rename each file the same as the main folder. so the files would go from Trailer to Maverick (1994)-trailer.mp4. So right now I'm trying to move the files and then I will rename them next. But I would like to move them in bulk if possible.

2024.05.07 17:11 Whatisittou Harry is in the UK for Invictus Foundation Anniversary

Harry is in the UK for Invictus Foundation Anniversary
Prince Harry is taking the mic to support the Invictus Games.
On May 7, the Duke of Sussex, 39, joined a panel during his trip to the U.K. for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. The discussion, "The IGF Conversation: Realizing a Global Community," is set to reflect on the global community of service personnel and their families that the Invictus Games has fostered since its inception a decade ago through the power of adaptive sport, from Prince Harryā€™s initial inspiration at the Warrior Games to Invictus' impact in the years since.
Prince Harry, a former captain in the British Army who served two tours in Afghanistan, launched the adaptive sports tournament for service personnel and veterans in 2014. The inaugural Invictus Games were held in London that September, and he traveled to the U.K. from his California home to celebrate the milestone anniversary.
Reflecting on the past decade of the Invictus Games, the Duke of Sussex was asked if there was a "magic moment" from the event that made him "smile."
"It probably hasnā€™t changed, still, it has to be in the beginning, 2014, in the copper box," he replied. "I was at the DJ decks, trying to choose some of the music and put the lights on and just get people on their feet."
Prince Harry shouted out Guy Monson, who "never left his seat" at the event.
"But it was that final game of U.S.A. vs. U.K., and it was just end to end. I think it was wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball. And that, to me, was the highlight because you had 6,000 people who had filled this stadium and were on their feet, every age from 95 to 5, and people were just literally blown away by what they were watching. We had no idea what was going to happen."
Harry added, "I think weā€™ve just had a huge amount of fun. I think that I personally have learned so much from the people that I have met. The children, the family, the friends, the individuals themselves, and the amount of respect and admiration I have for all of them just continues to build just year after year after year. And now we have these Invictus One Year to Go events as well because, to be honest with you, we canā€™t wait two years!"
"So whoever is going to host the next Games, weā€™re all going to be there one year ahead, and then at the Games themselves," he continued. "So the highlight for me is being in this community with all these people."
Looking ahead, Prince Harry had a surprising answer about the future of the Invictus Games.
"Look Iā€™ve said this over and over again over the years, every time Iā€™ve been asked a similar question, which is, 'How long does Invictus go on for?' And the answer to that is, for as long as itā€™s serving a purpose. I would love more than anything ā€” and there will be people in this room who go, 'What is he saying?' ā€” but I would love more than anything to put this in a box, put it on a shelf, and to let that box be covered in dust because we donā€™t need it in anymore," he said. "But as we in this room probably understand more so than most, thatā€™s just simply not the case."
"Iā€™m a big fan of trying to solve the root cause of a problem, and the root cause of the problem is conflict. I canā€™t fix that," he continued. "So we will always be here to be able to spread the message, tell the stories, change the perspectives and to help as many people as humanly possible because Invictus transcends borders, it transcends politics. It is what it is. There is this magic within this community that exists."
Prince Harry hopes new countries will join the event ā€” and if funding allows, more competitors in each Invictus Games.
"We cap our competitors at 550 strong," he said. "If there are people in this room who really want to come in with a big number of funding, then we can probably increase that, but then it means the Games go beyond a week, and everything else starts becoming much longer and bigger."
Beyond the panel discussion, Harry's itinerary includes a service at St. Paulā€™s Cathedral on May 8. The Duke of Sussex is set to deliver a reading at the cathedral in the heart of London, and Homeland star Damian Lewis will recite the poem "Invictus." The prose by William Ernest Henley is full of meaning for the Invictus Games community, and the competitionā€™s motto "I am" comes from its final line ā€” "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."
Henley is coincidentally commemorated with a memorial bust in the Crypt of St. Paul's, which is where the future King Charles and Princess Diana married in 1981.
The program is expected to bring together representatives from the Invictus Gamesā€™ participating nations, including members of the wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veteran community. Invictus community members, supporters, and beneficiaries will also give readings and participate in the service, which will be led by The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, Dean of St Paulā€™s.
News of Prince Harryā€™s Invictus-focused trip was announced on April 28 and brings him back to the U.K. for the first time in a few months. The Duke of Sussex flew to London in February for a private visit with his father, King Charles, after Buckingham Palace announced the sovereign's cancer diagnosis on Feb. 5. Several days later, he stepped out in Canada with his wife, Meghan Markle, Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025's One Year to Go celebrations, which counted down to the seventh cycle of the games in Canada next year.
Prince Harry will not meet with King Charles during his trip to the U.K. for the Invictus Games anniversary, PEOPLE confirms.
A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex says, "In response to the many inquiries and continued speculation on whether or not The Duke will meet with his father while in the U.K. this week, it unfortunately will not be possible due to His Majestyā€™s full program. The Duke of course is understanding of his fatherā€™s diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon."
Prince Harry made his latest visit to the U.K. solo, but he is due to reunite with Meghan, 42, for another significant trip this week. On the heels of the announcement of the Invictus anniversary plans, PEOPLE confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are heading to Nigeria. The couple accepted an invitation on behalf of the Chief of Defense Staff, the countryā€™s highest-ranking military official.
During their visit, Prince Harry and Meghan will meet with service members and participate in a variety of cultural activities.
The agenda will highlight the Invictus Games following Nigeriaā€™s event debut at the latest Invictus Games in DĆ¼sseldorf, Germany in September 2023. Nigerian Minister of Defense Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru also attended the competition in Germany and has expressed interest in hosting the games in the future.
Prince Harry and Meghan spent time with the Nigerian team at the tournament in DĆ¼sseldorf, and the Duke of Sussex revealed in his speech at the opening ceremony in Germany that his wife was rooting for the squad after discovering that she has Nigerian heritage, a revelation made on her Archetypes podcast in 2022.
"Now, I'm not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she's of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit more competitive this year," he joked.
On the topic of friendly allegiances and lighthearted rivalries, Prince Harry previously told PEOPLE that there was "no picking sides" for him between the U.K. and U.S. teams following his California move.
"I feel like I have a special bond with all the teams, and Iā€™m very much a supporter of the sport, as opposed to the winning. So thereā€™s no picking sides for me!" he told PEOPLE in 2022.
