2024.05.14 15:18 Delicious-Talk-7295 Hey all! Question time!

Happy Tuesday to all! Just finished a night shift and trying something here. Gonna ask random questions just to make people talk and chat! So here is the first one!
If you can still remember, what are your funniest childhood memories?
As for me it's when I was younger. I was playing with the rolled paper firecracker thing like you put and toy gun and it makes some pow and you pull the trigger (sorry don't know the exact word for it, English isn't my native language)
I staked 2-3 of those roll on a rock on the floor and with an other rock I hit the stack pill and it made a HUGE noise. My ears wear going beeeeeeep of that. My grandpa was checking his car and was laying under it. It mades him jump scare like crazy. I ran inside the house (gladly it wasn't between close wall inside!) and I ask my grand parent of I could turn deaf because of that. They told me yes and I was very scared lol.
It wasn't funny at the moment but now that's a story my grandpa used to like telling and we were laughing about it!

2024.05.14 15:16 Deep_Acanthisitta252 My colleague is having an affair with me and I've fallen in love with her.

I've recently separated from my Fiance of 10 years leaving behind my home, my daughter, pets and life savings having to start again. The relationship was sour for the last 2-3 years, we weren't agreeing, the bedroom was dead and we were both becoming mentally unwell from the situation, I had stayed simply for my daughter.
Shortly before the separation me and a co-worker had began a flirtatious situation in work and after an evening of going out drinking we kissed. I felt terrible about what I had done, 2 days later I ended my relationship knowing I had become capable of something I swore to never do, I was not willing to start an affair and hurt the mother of my child like that, relationship or not she is family to me. I still feel awful about what I did.
I continued to go out with this colleague after the seperation and the same thing kept happening, we would go out, get drunk and be all over each other. She has a long distance boyfriend of 18 months, they see each other once a week max. She has stated she is unhappy in her relationship, doesn't feel the same way about him anymore and has sexual anxiety around him, they don't get up to much. She says she planned to end it past August as she has a bunch of financial stuff revolving around booked holidays and festivals with him (This has always been questionable to me)
What began as drunken displays of affection turned into nights at hotels, which eventually turned into her sleeping in my bed on the regular. Just sex turned into staying over, and drunken nights turned into meals and breakfast on the regular. We have both owned the fact we have feelings for each other and even tried and failed to turn it back into just a bit of fun. It is exactly like having a girlfriend at this point except she isn't. I enjoy my time with her, she makes me really happy but a day like today when she has to go see her boyfriend kills me. I can't have contact, feel lonely and my head just isn't in a good place.
I often feel like I should quit the situation, it's been 3 months now and I'm still in the same boat. The block of festivals and holidays are coming up soon and that's either going to make or break the situation as to if she leaves him or not. I often feel like a fool, fresh out of a relationship sucked in to a strange situation and riding it out way too long. I often wonder if there is something else stopping her from leaving him like him having pictures or a video of her. Her friends are not a fan of him at all either.
I turn 30 in November and have promised myself not to turn 30 and be unhappy, that is my absolute deadline with this situation. Friends have told me to stop, some say just enjoy it as a bit of fun, others say play it out, I'm very confused and all I know is how I feel. I love her. We work together and I see her almost everyday, I can't talk to colleagues as it's obviously a huge secret in work. I have debated a fresh start, leaving my job and moving out of town, but my company isn't doing great and I'm staying in case of redundacy pay which would help me massively right now. I am trapped in that job and trapped seeing her everyday.
Any advice would be appreciated, and yes I have questioned morals on both sides a lot.

2024.05.14 15:14 deathbater [PSA] Keys / Twitch Drops / Activations

Hi!
After many hours of answering questions from friends and members of the community, i decided to make this post to shine some light on how, when, and where get access to this game.
P.S: Im not a staff member from ABI, and English is my second lenguage so bear with me
There are three ways to get access to ABI:
  1. Pre-register in the official page, this is how I got my beta key first day. This method 99% is not longer working, you had to be there before the beta launch. If you got lucky this way, you will receive an email "Arena Breakout: Infinite Beta Qualification Guaranteed - Download NOW!"
  2. Giveaway key: you win one from the Discord, Twitter, etc events. This method is the most unlikely because they give away a very little amount of keys this way. Anyway, if you got one this way, go to the official page, create an account if you dont have one, and link the key. Access will be granted to you via mail the next business day.
  3. Twitch Drops: if you are reading this, chances are you are waiting for another event, or already participated but are a little bit loss. If you got a key this way, and you see the key in the format NEWKEY-00000-NOSTEAM, congratulations you will be granted access via mail the next business day.
Keys are account linked for twitch drops, so it cant be shared (and people selling them in the official discord have been baned).
To this day 14/05/2024 there has been 3 Twitch Drops events. Im sure there will be more. And as the devs said:
Please remember that each player can only claim the beta access reward from Twitch Drops once. If you have already completed the drops task during the first two round event, you will be able to claim the Key directly on the event page. If you have not completed the task, your progress will be reset in the events.
Lastly, the devs have a "Beta Test Guidebook" where they explains with better detail all this. But for some reason no one reads that.
Official Page
Official Discord
Official X
Official Facebook
Official Youtube
EDIT: added some links
Good luck to all, see you at Kamona.

2024.05.14 15:12 th3_warri0r A Spectacular Fall in "The storm"

A Spectacular Fall in
Night spread its wings over the storm, enveloping the neighborhood in a cloak of shadows and silence. It was past 11:00 PM when my father, tired after a long day's work, was cycling home. He pedaled easily through the deserted streets, his thoughts far away, on daily worries and plans for the future.
Suddenly, everything fell upon him like a blinding flash. A powerful blow hit him on the head, throwing him to the ground with tremendous force. The bicycle flew through the air like a possessed object, landing with a metallic clang on the asphalt. Dad lay motionless for a moment, his head spinning and his ears buzzing. He felt dizzy and confused, unable to remember what had happened.
When he came to his senses, he struggled to his feet, clutching his aching head. To his surprise, he felt a bleeding wound above his left eyebrow. A broken brow, evidence of the violent impact that had struck him. But what hit him? Who attacked him unexpectedly?
Looking around, Dad noticed a metallic object lying near him. It was a crowbar, a blunt weapon with a sharp edge, gleaming ominously in the dim light of the streetlamp. Could this have been the instrument of the attack? With his heart pounding in his chest and fear still etched on his face, Dad picked up the cold crowbar and started walking home, wobbling on his feet.
The next day, the storm was in a frenzy. Everyone was talking about my father's bizarre incident. Some said he was attacked by robbers, others believed he was the victim of a bicycle accident. Dad, silent and mysterious, didn't want to give any details about the incident.
Only our upstairs neighbor, an old and wise gentleman, knew the truth. He saw everything from his balcony: Dad, drunk after a long party with friends, had gotten on his bicycle with the intention of returning home. But, due to his intoxicated state, he lost control of the bicycle and fell into a nearby pit, which had recently been dug for sewer work and had not yet been covered.
Although Dad never admitted the truth, the story of his fall into the pit became a local legend in the storm, an amusing anecdote that was told and retold for generations. A vivid reminder of a crazy night and a lesson learned: never get on a bicycle after a well-watered party!

Conclusion: A Lingering Mystery

Although I've detailed the spectacular incident of my father's fall in the storm, the truth behind the event remains shrouded in mystery. Our neighbor, with his apparent kindness and knowledge of the details, could have harbored a malicious intent.
Time has proven the neighbor wasn't a trustworthy figure. His subsequent actions revealed a dubious character with a tendency to manipulate and exploit others.
Today, I remain with questions about that fateful night. Was it a simple fall caused by intoxication, or a premeditated act orchestrated by a neighbor with sinister plans? The lack of concrete evidence and my father's silence leave only speculation and a lingering unease.
However, the story of this spectacular fall serves as a reminder of the complexities of human nature and the hidden dangers that can lurk even within those around us. Uncertainty persists, yet the lesson remains: vigilance and caution are vital in navigating life's labyrinth.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Inkh-Su (인수). I have been roleplaying since 2009 and started playing D&D 2018. I am hoping that you will be interested in my homebrew world of Myhrr. It is a work of consistent passion. I have passed 50 pages of content and have handcrafted over 30 explorable cities, tile-by-tile.
Myhrr is a living world developed by the DM, and a story lead by the players.
I prefer players who want to emotionally invest in NPCs, their party members, and their own characters. My aim is to naturally draw characters together into an interweaving story of relationships, action, and heroism.
My five main inspirations are The Books of Magic, Berserk, Merlin, Odin Sphere & The Last Unicorn.
I adhere to rules that maximize your exploration and sense of curiosity. I don't try to predict players, I just adapt to their actions. I study player strengths & weaknesses to spotlight them and write a balanced story. Depending on backstory, I grant geographical, social, and historical information.
Much of the world is a medieval, war-torn, feudalist place that has just found a respite from war. Power wavers with uncertainty, under the constant threat that war will return. Nobles attempt to secure peace alongside bloodstained battlegrounds. Royalty seizes power by sword, flame, accusation and subterfuge.
Whilst the faith in currency is unshaken, Trade is unstable. Promises are rare. The hunt of witches, warlocks, wizards and druids is ceaseless in a war against the unholy forces of magic and devilry.
Myhrr is plagued with economic inequality and xenophobia. Whilst half-orcs, tieflings, and goblins are capable of citizenship they are treated as second class citizens. Faced with the constant truths of their loathsome origins, demonic history, and biological differences they find little respite among other races.
Where half/elves are constantly bombarded with opportunity, these marginalized races find none.
Dungeons in the world are difficult to find. One requires research of the hundreds of books in the world, or a quick tongue and a fast blade, to take such information. Yet there are riches, power, and secrets hidden away behind the abominations of the deep and the traps that lay within. Those who seek answers in the hidden places of the world are at true risk of death or worse.
Think fast or die, traps don't wait and neither do monsters.
The core of every event lies a mystery. A quandary of history, social intrigue and chasing after evidence. Ancient secrets, political dealings, and criminal ones. The world's history is extensive but only a player who wishes to know the lore of the world will discover it.
One of the things I'm proud of in my game are its people. I've been roleplaying for over a decade and believe that every NPC will have more depth than any player will care about. Ingrained into the world and its culture; they have fears, desires and interact with an intelligence befitting of their environment.
Magic comes with a constant emotional and social contract. Only four classes are considered magical. Sorcerer, Druid, Warlock, and Wizard. All other classes use non-magical flavored versions of their spells. Each class uses magic uniquely, yet none of it is as reliable as sword or bow. Magic, no matter it's origin, has a will of its own.
Most cultures believe sorcery, druidry, and wizardry to be witchcraft.
Sorcerers do not have control over their innate power without having control over their own hearts. Druids must build a true relationship with nature and balance. Warlocks are required to debate and negotiate with cruel devils. Wizards are mysterious and grow in power as they follow a path of wonder.
The world has several holidays and I'd love to watch your character celebrate too.
Finally, the game is played with a flowing system of time. Time moves regardless of what your character is or isn't doing. Players who act quickly, describe their actions, act their dialogue and invest their hearts will quickly find themselves escaping the arm of mere RAW rules and mechanics.
I am rewarded by players who will sit after a game and theorize about NPCs, History and Intentions and have plans on how they want to act on the world. Reactive players are alright, but players who develop a judgment and work to act on that judgment are rewarded.
I am also rewarded by characters who act on and with emotionality to NPCs and with each other. My favorite moments are listening to the building moment of character clashes and support when they make discoveries that reveal pieces of themselves and each other.

2024.05.14 15:10 dre0422 There must be something wrong with me.

Does anyone else start reminiscing and thinking about every little thing that happened during the relationship trying to figure out what you did wrong? I was nothing but supportive and loving and he still lost feelings. I always hugged him, told him I love him, bought him little gifts, baked his favorite dessert for him, cooked for him, payed for a lot of dates, gave him his space when he needed it without complaining and it still wasn’t enough. I never complained about anything either, I never asked him to do these same things for me.
He never treated me like I was special but it still never stopped me from showing him how much I loved him. So what was so wrong with me? We had so many things in common and at the beginning we could talk for hours, but then it was impossible to keep up a conversation. I struggle with social anxiety so maybe it was my fault? It got to a point where I didn’t know what to say 99% percent of the time, sometimes I asked him a question playfully and he would be so dry, or I would make a joke and he would look at me with disgust. I don’t understand. Did he find me boring? Stupid? I was even nervous to be around him because it started triggering my social anxiety so bad. He started criticizing my hobbies, it was all so passive aggressive I couldn’t notice it in the moment. But I just want to know what was so wrong with me that when he started to get to know me better he was disgusted.

2024.05.14 15:08 Yurii_S_Kh Sermon on Tuesday of the Second Week After Pascha. Radonitsa. Commemoration of the Departed

Sermon on Tuesday of the Second Week After Pascha. Radonitsa. Commemoration of the Departed
https://preview.redd.it/aqyfca9d5e0d1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=83161f47e56f235b4722b88d8e834b4a64589cfb
Christ is Risen, dear brothers and sisters! Today is the first Paschal day when the Church prays publicly for the departed. We have come to church to pray for our reposed relatives, and this commemoration is special.
Throughout the year, we worry about them, remember them, mourn and grieve. But it is no coincidence that this Paschal Service is called Radonitsa (meaning “rejoicing” in Russian): this word indicates that we rejoice. The Church calls on us to share this joy with our departed relatives, with those whom we loved and cherished, who were important to us throughout our lives and remain so to this day.
Bright Week has passed. It has flown by like a single Paschal day: the time when we were called to rejoice in our salvation, in what the Lord has done for us. The Church is the one Body of Christ. And although there is a relative division into the Church Militant (earthly) and the Church Triumphant (Heavenly), we understand that this is all one Church, of which Christ is the Head; and It is quickened by the Spirit of God. We believe that the Lord gives Paschal joy to those who have already crossed the threshold of eternity.
What is revealed in the Kingdom of God to our departed relatives, what they see, hear, and feel, is undoubtedly incomparable with what we experience, since they are no longer limited by their flesh—by this coarse earthly nature (cf. 2 Cor. 12:4). But the question is: to what extent do they experience all this as joy? Are they in a state of bliss and do they really rejoice? From everyday experience we know that when someone who is in difficult, deplorable circumstances hears, say, amusement and joy in a neighboring house or apartment, he can react to this in different ways. Is he truly happy for his neighbor? Isn’t he envious, angry, or annoyed just because joy is passing him by? Of course, it is a very relative comparison with what may be happening in eternity.
But by the grace of God, the Church that consists of people living on earth, through conciliar prayer, through charitable acts, as if by the hands of our departed close ones, for whom we pray and whom we love, intercedes with the Lord, asking, begging Him to forgive the sins of the departed and to vouchsafe them to partake of ineffable Paschal joy. The joy that each one of us longs for and that we speak about with our hearts in the Creed: “Whose Kingdom shall have no end.”
Let’s ask ourselves: When does a person rejoice? Can there be joy without a reason? No, you can only rejoice in what you have: you can’t force yourself to be happy with what you don’t have. And therefore, if our hearts rejoice at Pascha, this is the most powerful evidence that the Lord is living and the gift of His grace is in our hearts. But joy also comes from something else. Ask a small child (except ye… become as little children, ye shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven [Mt. 18:3]) when he rejoices. He rejoices when his desires are fulfilled—that is, he is happy and blissful. A child wants ice-cream—his mother buys him ice-cream, so he is glad. In other words, we rejoice when our will has been fulfilled.
And if we rejoice at Pascha, this speaks volumes. It means that our will has become subordinated to the will of God. What else should we look for in life? Where there is God, where there is Truth, there is true joy. Of course, everything else can please and gladden us, but the longer we live, the more we realize that all this joy is very short–term and momentary, like a flash of lightning. But the truth of the Lord and His joy are never-ending.
And that is why today we believe that not only we, but also those for whom we pray, partake of this joy. And, most importantly, together with them we feel that we are one Body of the Church of Christ.
If we read the memorial prayers carefully, we will definitely find words saying that sooner or later everyone will have to stand before the Lord, give an answer for the life he lived, and hear His judgment about our eternal destiny—either Paradise or hell. And if there is no joy in the heart of a person who stands before Christ, then he will not have the courage to say two simple words, without which our salvation is impossible: “Lord have mercy!” Only the joy in the Risen Christ in our hearts gives us the courage to beg the Lord for the gift of salvation, because it is given exclusively by the grace of Christ.
Today’s Gospel passage attunes us to perceiving life in a special way. Christ says that non-believers cannot be saved because they loved darkness (Jn. 3:19). These are simple words and, at first glance, everything is clear. But it should be noted that the emphasis here is on the word “loved”. Darkness is a place where there is no God and nothing connected with Him exists there. It’s one thing to be in such darkness, but it’s another thing to love it.
Everything that the Church does for us and tries to teach us within the framework of our earthly lives is aimed at one thing: that we would not love darkness, but hate it. As soon as this happens, we have love for the Lord.
Dear brothers and sisters, on this holy feast I would like to wish all of us to remember the important words of Christ, that he that believeth not is condemned already (Jn. 3:18). After all, these are very frightening words. It is better for us to be believers, to work our salvation, to hate darkness and love God. Then in eternity, when we hear this victorious, triumphant cry, “Christ is Risen!”, which we love so much here on earth, it will arouse an inexpressible storm of joy and bliss in us. Amen.
Christ is truly risen!

2024.05.14 15:04 lshdebutation [NB] Would I still be able to get the bunny Simeon card without spending another AP sale/level up sale

[NB] Would I still be able to get the bunny Simeon card without spending another AP sale/level up sale
I'm hesitating to get the Simeon card or just ignore it and wait for LD but I have enough cheat cards for the event and the event ends on 2 days. I might regret if I wait for rerun when i'm so close to getting it 😭 Bunny simeon needs to come home ASAP
Context: I'm f2p and an active player. I've been playing two or three times a day not missing out any fridge mission for extra AP. I spent 2 AP sales and some level up sales in this event to progress my item collecting.
After announcing earlier on NB's SNS accs that bday events will be back starting on Asmo's bday (which is tomorrow), I stopped spending my DP at this point so that I can fully participate for Luci's birthday next month.
If the answer to that question in title is not possible, then should I spend another 1 AP sale?

2024.05.14 15:03 EarlOfRats Feedback needed: Work in progress PoC interaction order guide

Info

This is a work in progress guide attempting to explain the order of interactions if more than one unit/item/power have the same text, such as multiple "Round start"-s. If you know your Path and you see any issues here, please comment so we can fix it: preferably with proof of the interaction in question. Any help is greatly appreciated and we can hopefully make this into a complete guide once we flesh out the details.
The guide was made by several members of the powercuties PoC discord server. Testing was done on the current patch but it wasn't exhaustive, so we'd be happy to receive feedback here or in the relevant thread in the server.

Play/Summon

Each of these levels has 3 tiebreakers:
Exceptions: items and relics have a top to bottom tiebreaker (aka first taken item activates first) but Shadow Totem activates before Stalker's Blade, Reckoner Mark and Iceborn Gauntlet, regardless of the order they were taken in.
Note 1: if another unit has a "when a unit is summoned" text, that seems to activate AFTER the summoned unit's items do. Not sure if it's before or after powers though Note 2: for adventures with mutators, the Foe always has the mutator as their bottommost (first to activate) power. That's true for all powers, not just play/summon Note 3: there's a visual bug that orders items and relics differently when hovering/viewing the card sometimes, but it doesn't affect the interaction order. That's true for all items, not just play/summon

Round start and Game start

Game start (once, obviously) -> natural attack token swap -> Player with attack token's powers -> Other player's powers -> Round Start Effects (explained below) -> natural draw 1
Round Start Effects:
Tiebreaker for powers: bottom to top. Another way to put it is: first taken is first activated
Tiebreaker for items: top to bottom. Another way to put it is: first taken is first activated
Exceptions:

Round end

Item (Galeforce) -> Round Ender's powers -> Other Player's power -> Round Ender's keywords/unit text -> Other Player's keywords/unit text
Tiebreaker for powers: bottom to top. Another way to put it is: first taken is first activated
Note: The only round end items in the game that activate on board are Galeforce (rare relic) and Bloodletter's Veil (from the Crimson Aristocrat encounter). Testing has been done with the former because it's unreliable to get the latter. For that same reason we're not sure if the Other Player's items activate before or after the Round Ender's powers, however that doesn't matter in 99.99% of games

2024.05.14 15:01 relationshipguy254 When Your Partner Sends Flirty Messages to Others When Angry?

Have you ever felt upset because your partner texts other people in a flirty way when they're mad at you? It's a situation that can leave you feeling confused and hurt. Today, I would like to answer the question of what you need to do when your partner sends dirty texts to others because they’re mad at you. This situation arises when you mostly raise a concern about the relationship, but instead of resolving the matter, they get mad and sext someone else. Of course, you will feel bad about it, and when you’re afraid of the relationship ending, you may end up apologizing for doing nothing.
Actually, the first thing you need to realize when you’re in this situation is that you’re not in a healthy relationship. This is because if someone goes to that extent of not wanting to solve the issues in the relationship, then there are only two options: either you end the relationship or you just stick with it but end up getting hurt.
Also, when your partner flirts with other people, and then you find yourself asking for feedback in forums, it simply means there’s a problem in the relationship and the problem can also solved by you being honest with yourself and the reality of the relationship. It's about going back to the basics—what are your boundaries? What are some of the things you cannot tolerate in a relationship?
When you don’t have a great relationship with yourself, or when you're neglecting yourself consciously or unconsciously, you tend to ignore the significant and clear red flags because you're afraid of what will happen if you acknowledge the truth about the toxicity of the relationship.
When your partner constantly avoids conflict or gets mad when you raise something, that is an avoidance of conflict, and you will end up getting hurt. You may want to keep the relationship and seek solutions, but often, the desire to maintain the relationship stems from fear of abandonment or being alone. When you're emotionally and physically dependent on someone else, you'll do whatever it takes to keep them because you're not accustomed to standing up for yourself. If your partner flirts instead of resolving issues, ask yourself why you're staying in that environment, or even question if they have the energy to flirt, then they should have the energy to address those issues.
Also, when someone avoids concerns and consistently engages in behaviors you dislike, it indicates that you, too, are avoiding the inevitable. You're sidestepping the reality that perhaps you're not standing up for yourself or that you're tolerating your partner's behaviors. This pattern is common in many relationships, especially unhealthy ones. Over time, you may become accustomed to tolerating hurtful behavior until it becomes normalized, and you're unsure how you reached that point. It often begins with seemingly minor issues.
Therefore, it's crucial to address problems in a relationship as soon as they arise. If you find yourself hesitant to raise concerns, recognize that it's about you. You may be grappling with deep-seated insecurities, such as fear of abandonment, rejection, or not pleasing others. Addressing these fears is key. Once you confront them, you'll realize that perhaps the relationship isn't right for you, or you may need to explore other options.

2024.05.14 15:01 FarragutCircle Reading The Big Book of Cyberpunk, Week 16

Welcome to Reading The Big Book of Cyberpunk!
Each week we (u/FarragutCircle and u/fanny_bertram) will be reading 5-ish stories from Jared Shurin’s The Big Book of Cyberpunk, which includes a curated selection of cyberpunk stories written from 1950 to 2022! We’ll include synopses of the stories along with links to any legally available online versions we can find. Feel free to read along with us or just stop by and hear our thoughts about some cyberpunk stories to decide if any of them sound interesting to you.
Every once in a while, we reach out to people who have more insight, due to being fans of the author or have some additional context for the story. (Or we just tricked them into it.) So please welcome u/Kopratic who will be sharing their thoughts on "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick!
Section 4: Challenge
In our fourth and penultimate section, editor Jared Shurin highlights how cyberpunk looks at technology that creates harm when put into practice, and later cites Marshall McLuhan about artists as challengers. (Shurin really seems to like this McLuhan guy.) Amusingly there’s a footnote where he mentions litrpg in passing, though he says there’s no litrpg in this anthology)
“We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick (published 1966; also available in his collection Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick)
Quail’s desire to go to Mars leads him to a memory-implant company so he can remember going to Mars, but complications and revelations and twists ensue, hilariously.
“Speed” by Misha (1988)
I think that Speed is looking for Speelyi-427 on behalf of a computer AI called Juno 888, but after that I’m lost.
“Computer Friendly” by Eileen Gunn (1989; also available in her collection Stable Strategies and Others)
Elizabeth and other kids are tested, and while she passes with flying covers, her new friends might lose their lives unless she can figure out a way to help them in a world where the heavily computerized future uses real brains from people and dogs.
“I Was a Teenage Genetic Engineer” by Nisi Shawl (1989)
The narrator is imprisoned for her reckless genetic engineering, making new incarnations of old gods.
“The Gene Drain” by Lewis Shiner (1989)
A generation ship ends up right back on Earth, with disturbing and amusing differences between the two groups.
That’s it for this week! Check back the same time next week where we’ll be reading and discussing "Deep Eddy" by Bruce Sterling, "The Yuletide Cyberpunk Yarn, or Christmas_Eve-117.DIR" by Victor Pelevin, "Wonderama" by Bef, "comp.basilisk FAQ" by David Langford, and "Spider's Nest" by Myra Çakan.
Also posted on Bochord Online.

2024.05.14 15:01 FelicitySmoak_ Tuesday, May 14, 2013 - Jackson v. AEG Live Day 11

Trial Day 11
Katherine Jackson, Rebbie and Trent are at court.
Choreographer Travis Payne & Katherine Jackson spoke briefly in the courtroom before the jury came in. They seemed cordial
Travis Payne Testimony
AEG direct
Payne is wearing a black jacket with a gold emblem on the shoulders with the word "MJ" & a pair of wings
Payne said he was concerned about MJ missing rehearsals. He didn't know why he wasn't showing up, but MJ was also working on an album and a book
Payne said he did not think that Jackson had a problem abusing prescription medications. He acknowledged that Jackson missed rehearsals and he saw the singer shivering or appearing cold in some of his final rehearsals
He worked with Jackson beginning in the 1990's and testified that he never saw Jackson drink alcohol or take any medications. Michael also never discussed his medical treatments, Payne said
Payne told the jury he advised MJ he was looking thin.
"Michael said he was 'getting down to my fighting weight', which I took to mean that he was preparing for the performances", Payne testified. "I had no reason to doubt him"
Payne says he was satisfied with the response.
Payne said there was one day (6/19) when MJ was cold. He thought the frustration had him on edge. When Jackson needed to be layered in blankets and required a heater to be comfortable, Payne said, he believed Michael was merely fighting a cold.
"No one else was cold. He had flu-like symptoms"
"Sometimes he was tired and lethargic and had to be, not convinced, but supported throughout rehearsals," Payne recalled
Payne said that in April, May & June, MJ missed 5 rehearsals with the whole group. He said one time Ortega sent Michael home
Bina shows an email from Ortega to Gongaware on Jun 14:
"Were you aware that Michael's doctor didn't permit him to attend rehearsal yesterday? Without invading his privacy, it might be a good idea to talk to his doctor to make sure everything he requires is in place. Who is responsible for Michael getting proper nourishment/vitamins/therapy every day? Personally, I feel he should have a top Nutritionist and Physical Therapist working with him on a regular basis. The demand on this guy is mentally and physically extraordinary! The show requirements exhaust our 20 year olds. Please don't underestimate the need to stay on top of this"
Another part of the same email chain, from Gongaware:
"Frank and I have discussed it already and have requested a face-to-face meeting w/ the doctor... We want to remind him that it's AEG not Michael Jackson who's paying his salary We want him to understand what is expected of him. He has been dodging Frank so far
Payne said his understanding was that AEG was paying Dr. Murray's salary not Michael. The doctor was there to oversee many things, Payne said. Payne explained he didn't have much reason to question Dr. Murray since he thought that a doctor selected to work with Michael was top notch.
Bina asked Payne whether he ever met Conrad Murray. The choreographer says he met Murray twice. Payne says the first time he met Dr. Murray was at the Carolwood house.
"I was going up the steps, Dr. Murray going downstairs, Michael introduced us."
Payne was coming up from the basement to the middle floor. Studio was at the basement. Payne said he never went to the top floor of the house. He says the second time was at the Staples Center, after a rehearsal and Jackson was leaving for the day. Both meetings were brief.
When asked how Michael performed on June 23 & 24:
"He was having his process, I didn't expect him to be like he would in front of a crowd," Payne explained. "He was not at show standards ... I didn't expect him to be as he would be in front of a crowd."
Payne: "It ebbed and flowed. Some days were good, some days were not as good."
The last two days were good.
"I thought he was in his way to the goals he set himself," Payne told the jury.
He didn't have any question that MJ would be able to perform , adding that he and others were impressed while watching Jackson rehearse at Staples Center on June 23/24, 2009.
Payne described the day MJ died: He was headed to rehearsal at Michael's home, got a call from his mother who said she saw reports on the news. Payne heard news on the radio, called Staples Center spoke to Stacy Walker, she said they were rehearsing. He was told to go to Staples.
"We were optimistic of his arrival," Payne said explaining they were expecting Michael to rehearse at the Staples Center.
Payne said Ortega got a series of calls. He remembers Kenny saying:
'tell me something that will make me know it's you and that this is true'

" I remember him (Kenny Ortega) collapsing in his seat and crying," Payne testified
Payne said he never saw Michael drink alcohol or take medication but
"Sometimes, in rehearsal, Michael would appear just a little loopy, under the influence of something, but mostly when he would come to the rehearsals from the dermatologist," Payne testified.
That happened two to four times in the weeks before his death, he said. Payne told that he didn't think Jackson had a problem with prescription drugs
"Michael was undergoing personal cosmetic procedures, so he could feel great and do a good job," Payne said.
Payne also said he appeared groggy in the morning sometimes, which he attributed to lack of sleep
"Mr. Jackson just explained to me that he had trouble sleeping, that he was tired, and that satisfied me," Payne testified.
He stated that he's not sure how much weight MJ had lost
Payne mentioned one day in particular at a meeting with Andre Crouch and singers, MJ seemed a little out of it
Payne said at one point, he & others tried to bring in a top physical therapist who works with Olympic athletes to help Michael. Jackson didn't work w/physical therapist flown in for him.
"At the last minute we realized that Michael was not going to go through with it. He was just not comfortable with the invasion of personal space."
Bina played a clip of This Is It from Jun 4 showing the green screen and making of "Drill" and Michael talking about the cool moves, dancing. Payne said the idea was to show the rehearsals and how things came together. The footage itself wasn't altered, but there was editing. Payne said they picked the best of the rehearsal to include in the documentary. He wanted to reshoot some scenes but was not allowed. Payne, who was an associate producer on the This Is It documentary, said the footage of Jackson had not been retouched or altered.
Jackson cross
Attorney Brian Panish cross examined Payne. He asked if Michael ever performed the entire show from beginning to end. Payne said "No"
"Was he ready to perform for an audience?", Panish asked.
"I thought he was on his way to the goals he had set for himself," Payne answered. "All I saw was improvement and getting closer to the goals"
Payne's impression was that MJ loved being a father. He said he saw the beauty of their relationships, loyalty to one another.
"When we rehearsed, we had meals together," Payne recalled, talking about Michael and all three children.
Payne thought the relationship between MJ and Prince was awesome, Michael was a proud father, great to see how they interacted. Prince wanted to be a director, Michael would point out things to him during rehearsal should that be his career, Payne remembered.
As to Paris Jackson, Payne said he saw a very protective young lady, smart, astute, with knowledge of the production, very hands on. Paris, who was 11 at the time, was
"a very retentive young lady who was very, very smart, very astute," Payne testified. "She had full knowledge of the day-to-day operations, from the time of lunch and what it was going to be, she was hands on -- far beyond her age," he said. "She had a lot of responsibility, which I think she welcomed"
Payne said she was "the female of the house," and also "a daddy's girl."
"She really loved her father," he said. "At that time, she was coming to find out his global successes and presence, so she would wear her Michael Jackson t-shirt, headband and bag," he said.
It was Paris who would bless the food when they were have lunch with their father at home, he said.
"She was always the most vocal of the three children and was very concerned about many of the details of the house, was the temperature correct, what do you want to eat," Payne testified. "She just handled a lot for her young age"
Blanket, who was 7 when his father died, was the most quiet of the three. He liked to watch his father rehearsing his dances with Payne in the basement studio of their home, Payne said.
"He was quiet, but always right there with his dad," he said.
Michael guided and mentored him. Payne said he would be proud if MJ was his father and agreed the children suffered a tremendous loss. When rehearsing with Jackson at his Holmby Hills residence, Payne said the singer clearly delighted in being a father and shared meals with all three
"I saw the beauty of their relationships. I saw their loyalty to their father, I saw his loyalty to them. Their father enlightened them and taught them", he testified. "I was very proud to see Michael as such a loving father."
Panish: "Was Paris a Daddy's girl?"
Payne: "Yes, I believe so"
His description of the close relationship Paris (15) and Prince (16) had with their father four years ago could foreshadow the significance of the children's testimony later in the trial.
Payne always carries a video camera with him and shot videos of rehearsal. AEG took the footage that Payne shot and never returned to him. Email from Randy to Paul:
"Make sure you take out the shots of Michael in that red jacket... He looks way too thin and skeletal."
Payne said he was not aware of the email. He said Michael looked thin, but not skeletal. He doesn't know if Paul/Randy took any the footage out. The email was not displayed for the jury
As for Michael's relationship with Katherine, Payne said
"there's no secret that he loved his mother very much. It is kind of common knowledge"

"Karen Faye is a make up artist. She designed the make up, was always there when Michael was there", Payne testified.
Payne said Faye and MJ had a long term working relationship. They spent a lot of personal time together. Faye was concerned and frustrated with how Michael looked. She went to Payne kind of in an aggressive way. Payne told her to report to Ortega.
Payne said he wanted MJ to have a physical therapist, nutritionist, massage therapist, and have his family around. He said this was a different scenario.
"This was the first time MJ was working with AEG," Payne testified, saying he had always been hired by MJJ production before.
Payne said this was the first time Michael was not the sole producer of the show. Payne started working without a signed contract. He was being paid by AEG. Panish showed Payne's written contract. It is between Payne and AEG, beginning April 1, 2009. The contract said only AEG could cancel it. He testified that there was a delay in his contract with AEG because the salary was not in line with his standard charges, but that things worked out after he had a conversation with Jackson. Payne also said he believed AEG was paying Murray's salary, not Jackson
Payne was hired and paid by AEG. His contract was with AEG.
Panish: "Who could fire you. AEG?"
Payne: "I'm sure"
Things became heated when Panish inquired about a text message Karen Faye sent to Payne that accused him of lying to the media after Michael's death. He said earlier Faye had approached him in an "aggressive" way about her concern for Jackson's health but he told her to take her concerns to Ortega.
"I do not remember receiving a text message from Karen Faye asking why I was lying to the media," Payne explained.
Panish: "Were you upset when MJ died?"
Payne: "Yes"
During cross-examination, Payne was shown several photos of premieres for the This Is It documentary .Panish shows a picture of Payne at the red carpet premiere. He agreed he was happy about the premiere. In one, Ortega & AEG executive Randy Phillips flank Jackson's manager, Frank DiLeo, who has a cigar hanging out of his mouth. All three are grinning. Brian Panish, the attorney for Jackson's family, remarked that everyone looked pretty happy
Payne said he wasn't privy to details of what was expected of Dr. Murray. AEG was producepromoter, but MJ was the star, had to be happy
Panish reminded Payne that he had testified in his deposition that AEG was
"trying to protect its investment"

"I don't have a dog in this race so I'm not on either side", an aggravated Payne countered adding that he felt Panish was being aggressive. "I'm just saying I don't want to be painted as somebody who's trying to mask anything".
After several hours of testy exchanges with Panish, his voice quivered and he dabbed his eyes with a tissue.
"I'm just trying to have a conversation with you and tell the truth."
Panish asked Payne if defendants' attorney approached him during lunch to show him some documents. He said yes, he saw parts of his deposition
Under cross examination, Payne acknowledged that some of Jackson's behavior, including grogginess, lethargy, insomnia and occasional paranoia, were possible symptoms of prescription drug abuse. He also said that despite testifying earlier that he worked with Jackson one-on-one five days a week, he couldn't recall how many rehearsals the singer actually attended
Panish after lunch break got Travis Payne to concede Jackson wasn't present for a May 19, 2009 rehearsal. Payne also conceded that Jackson was a no-show for a June 22, 2009 rehearsal. Panish confronted Payne saying that yesterday he said he was with MJ at a dance studio on May 19, that they were up on their feet & danced.
Panish: "Sir, Michael was not with you May 19, 2009, was he?"
Payne: "No"
Panish: "He was at the doctor"
Payne: "If you're saying, I'm not disputing"
Panish said that on May 19, Michael was having a cyst removed at Dr. Klein's office, so he could not have been rehearsing with Payne.
Panish then said on Jun 22 MJ wasn't there either, "was he?"
Payne said he didn't know.
Panish said MJ was at another doctor's office
Payne said he may have made a mistake about Jackson's whereabouts & he didn't know his personal schedule. Travis Payne had testified yesterday that he and Jackson ran through certain songs on May 19th. He said today he was testifying based on the schedule and notes he compiled and that his recollection might be wrong
"We're human, sometimes we make mistakes," Payne explained, saying he's not disputing that Michael was or wasn't there on those dates.
Payne said there was always something for Michael to do.
"He needed to come to rehearsal, it was part of the job"
Payne said Michael had a hard time picking up some of the material. He was having trouble learning dances, Payne says. Email from Ortega to Gongaware:
"He has been slow at grabbing hold of the work"
Jackson was having trouble learning dances, choreographer Travis Payne says
"Prior to June, I noticed Mr. Jackson was thinner than I recognized him," Payne said, noting he never saw sudden weight change in MJ.
Second time Payne saw Dr. Murray was the night before Michael died at Staples Center.
"I wanted Michael to go home and go to sleep" Payne recalls. Payne said something about Murray felt off, Payne said. "He didn't feel like an official doctor"
Payne knew MJ had sleeping problems and that Dr. Murray was treating him for that. Ortega also knew; Payne thought Gongaware was aware too. Payne also said he and Ortega knew that Jackson was having sleep problems. Attorney Brian Panish asks if AEG executives knew. There were several objections, and Payne was only allowed to answer "No" as to whether Paul Gongaware knew about Michael's sleep problems
Panish asked Payne about choosing Jackson's dancers for This Is It. Payne says they were whittled down from 5,000 applicants. Applicants submitted video clips and their submissions were used to cull down potential dancers from there. Payne said they received 5,000 applications for dancers, about 2,500 showed up for the audition. He taught them some dance moves, and the pool was further narrowed down. Michael chose the dancers
Panish then asked Payne whether he knew how many doctors AEG interviewed to work with Jackson on This Is It. "No", Payne says. Payne also says he isn't aware how much interviewing or investigation into Murray that AEG did.(Panish's point appears to be that there was more scrutiny of backup dancers than Conrad Murray)
During preparations for This Is It, Michael at times seemed "under the influence of something" and once couldn't take the stage because he appeared incoherent, Payne testified.
Payne said he was aware that Jackson had problems sleeping and chalked up the singer's sometimes erratic behavior to sleep aids or sedatives from his dermatologist visits.
"You have to understand that one always says hindsight is 20/20. In the moment I had no inkling of what, ultimately, what was revealed until Mr. Jackson's passing", he said
Payne saw Michael tired and fatigued. He agreed that those symptoms could be signs of drug addiction. Payne was aware that MJ was losing weight during rehearsals and he had not seeing him lose weight like that before.
"He was not in great physical shape and was sore, working up his stamina. Lack of sleep and proper nourishment were starting to show", Payne said.
Payne says at one point, he told Kenny Ortega that Jackson appeared "assisted" (meaning that he thought he was on drugs\meds)
Payne said some people were concerned about the goals not being met, including Randy Phillips and Paul Gongaware. Payne learned what Demerol was after MJ died. He also remembers a mention of Demerol in the song "Morphine".
Panish asked if MJ knew the lyrics of his songs.
"I think he did, he knew most of them, but he wanted to have a Teleprompter for safety. He didn't want to make any mistakes, to refresh his memory. Also to use for sequence of songs",Payne said.
Payne agreed that it was very unusual for Michael to have a Teleprompter with the lyrics of his own songs. He never used it before. Payne didn't specify which songs Jackson wanted the teleprompter for
Payne said a body double was requested for Michael. Misha Gabriel was his body double, but shorter than him. Some of the scenes in the documentary are with the body double, Payne testified. Payne remembers at the Culver Studios in Smooth Criminal there was a stunt and Misha was asked to jump through a glass plate
Payne said most the time, MJ was present at rehearsals. "It wasn't a big deal," he expressed
Panish showed an email from the band leader Michael Bearden:
"Michael is not in shape enough yet to sing this stuff live and dance at the same time. He can use the ballads to sing live and get his stamina back up, Once he's healthy enough and has more strength I Have full confidence he can sing the majority of the show live. His voice sounds amazing right now, he needs to build it back up. I still need all big dance numbers to be in the system so we can concentrate on choreography."
Payne was aware that AEG was considering in mid June pulling the plug on the show. He said Michael looked exhausted & paranoid on Jun 19. Jackson's condition and missed rehearsals led to talk within the last 10 days of Jackson's life that AEG Live LLC, which was promoting "This Is It," might cancel the concert series.
"It was 'We've got to get this together or the plug may be pulled,'" Payne says
Payne was working for AEG and said he relayed his concerns about Jackson's possible prescription drug use and that he was exhibiting troubling signs of insomnia, weight loss and paranoia in his final days to tour director Kenny Ortega. Jackson was struggling to get into shape for the shows, and Payne said his voice coach suggested using a voice track for fast-paced songs until the singer's stamina improved.
Payne went to Michael's house on June 20. He was cold and had to light the fireplace and rub his hand and feet to warm himself up
Panish showed a picture of Michael on June 24 rehearsing "Thriller"; Payne said MJ improved but was not at his best yet.
Panish: "Around June 20, was Ortega in the mindset that Michael Jackson was not ready for this?" Payne: "Yes"
Payne said Michael was not ready, it was not the Michael he knew. He died four days later. But he didn't see anything that alarmed him on June 23/24
Panish:" Did you see that Michael was getting pressured to get everything done in the last days?" Payne: "Yes"
Payne said he could sense something was wrong, but didn't know what it was. He said Jackson's performances in the final days of his life were impressive, and it felt
"like we were definitely on an upswing"

"I never doubted Michael because he was the architect of this and he wanted to do it, so part of my responsibility was to help him get there", Payne said, his voice racked with emotion.
Panish ended his direct examination of choreographer Travis Payne with three questions.
Panish: "Did you see that Michael Jackson appeared to be pressured to get everything done at the Staples last rehearsals?"
"Yes," Payne said
Panish: "The pressure about the shows started to manifest itself physically in Michael Jackson?"
"Yes," Payne replied.
Panish:" You could sense that something was wrong, you just didn't know what it was?"
Payne responded "Yes."
AEG re-direct
Payne's demeanor changed after Panish finished questioning him. He was holding back tears when the AEG attorney started re-direct examination. For the next several moments, Payne blinked and dabbed both eyes with a tissue. It was the first time he'd gotten emotional on the stand.
Bina in re-direct asked: "Do you think you could get him there?"
Payne: "Absolutely!"
Bina asked Payne again about how many rehearsals Jackson attended. Payne said MJ was present a significant amount of the days he was scheduled to work but he couldn't recall dates, precisely how many that Jackson attended.
As to Gongaware's email regarding what was expected of Dr. Murray, Payne said the inconsistencies with Michael missing rehearsals warrant a talk. Payne said he thought Dr. Murray was there to care for his patient, making sure right nutritionist was there, to get him ready for the show. Payne never discussed with MJ about his doctors or personal affairs. Payne and Faye were professionals with each other, but not friends.
"Production felt he wasn't coming to rehearsals enough, and that was frustrating to some of the staff," Payne testified. "I had a concern we needed to create a show Michael would enjoy doing it," Payne explained
She also showed Payne photos from the This Is It premiere. First photo is of Payne shaking Jermaine Jackson's hand at the movie premiere. Bina also showed another image of smiling Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Marlon with Payne at the premiere. Payne cried saying he had been through so much and the rough part was behind them. He was pleased to show the fans what the show was to be.
Jackson re-cross
In re-cross, Panish notes that none of Michael's brothers are part of this lawsuit.
Panish then asked Payne whether Katherine Jackson and Michael's kids went to the premiere. Panish says Katherine Jackson & her grandchildren didn't go to the premiere because they weren't over Jackson's death. Payne said he didn't think anyone was over Jackson's death when the film premiered in late 2009.

2024.05.14 15:01 sidusnare [Talk] This film festival spotlights efforts to preserve and discover lost movies

https://www.npr.org/2024/05/13/1251040886/this-film-festival-spotlights-efforts-to-preserve-and-discover-lost-movies
The Restored and Rediscovered film festival begins Monday at the Jacob Burns Film Festival in New York City. It's meant to put a spotlight on movies that have been since lost.
AILSA CHANG, HOST:
Nearly half of all movies made before 1950 have been lost, according to some estimates. That's why film historians and archivists are racing to preserve older movies. The Restored and Rediscovered Film Festival spotlights these efforts, and it kicks off today at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, N.Y. One of the festival's offerings is this rarely seen 1971 film, "Bushman." It's about the racial politics of 1960s America as seen through the eyes of a Nigerian immigrant.
(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "BUSHMAN")
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character) Man, I can't get used to these strange Black people in the world (ph).
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #2: (As character) I'm Blacker than you are.
CHANG: Senior film programmer and critic Monica Castillo is here to tell us more. Welcome.
MONICA CASTILLO: Thank you for having me.
CHANG: Well, thanks for being with us. So can we start with that film, "Bushman"? Like, I've heard it described as half drama, half documentary. What was this film about exactly?
CASTILLO: It's a really interesting film that blends narrative nonfiction and fiction. You're following a Nigerian exchange student as he kind of explores identity, ideas of home and belonging in counterculture San Francisco in the late 1960s. And he even embraces the name Bushman as well. You know, and his different questioning and answers throughout the different characters that he meets.
But then all of a sudden, the movie comes to a screeching halt. And then somebody else comes in front of the frame and tells you that the actor playing the main character was arrested on his own college campus and deported. So then that's when the documentary aspect really comes in. And it's a talking point for the way that Black students are treated, the way that immigrants are treated. It's a really remarkable film.
CHANG: So interesting.
CASTILLO: Yeah.
CHANG: Well, I do want to talk about the work involved in bringing a film like "Bushman" to audiences on the big screen. Like, what does it take to restore a film? What do archivists have to do to resurrect some of these films, exactly?
CASTILLO: Yeah. So it really depends on the film itself and what condition it's in. There's usually a scanning process, digitizing it. And then once it's in a computer, they can fix the imperfections, whether that be mold or color degradation or scratches. And then through that process, we're able to get another copy on the other end. So that's what we're able to show.
CHANG: What's fascinating about this for me is when I think of restored films, I think of, like, the old silent films or the early talkies. But we're talking about films that are much more modern. Like, I know one of the films you're showing is the 1960 British horror thriller "Peeping Tom."
(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "PEEPING TOM")
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #3: (As character) Whatever I photograph, I always lose.
(SCREAMING)
CHANG: Which I understand that critics hated when the movie came out. So tell me why you decided to showcase that movie here.
CASTILLO: Absolutely. And they sure did hate it at that time. But...
CHANG: And why? What was so awful about this movie?
CASTILLO: It was controversial in the way that it depicted violence. And it sort of equated, you know, movie making with a sense of warriorism. I mean, that's very much what it's playing with, but maybe it was a little too ahead of its time. So even though it came out about the same time that "Psycho" did, you know, Alfred Hitchcock was celebrated, and Michael Powell had to deal with the sort of career fallout with all of these negative reviews over "Peeping Tom." But now with this new restoration, I mean, you get to really appreciate the amount of texture and color work that he's working with. Like, he really immerses you in the main character's sort of mania, and it's really fascinating.
CHANG: So what do you ultimately hope that people will take away from watching these films years and years later?
CASTILLO: I really just hope that they keep an eye out for these restorations. They are so special, and you get to see so much more. I was just thinking of the Iranian New Wave film "The Runner," which we have in our series. Before, I had seen a sort of VHS scan copy off of YouTube, and you lost so much of the story.
CHANG: Yeah.
CASTILLO: And then now with this restoration, there's whole pieces of the story that now come together. And you feel this character's journey in a such more emotional and visceral way. That's part of the movie magic.
CHANG: That is Monica Castillo, senior film programmer at the Jacob Burns Film Center. And if you aren't able to make it to the festival in Pleasantville, many of these restorations will be available to stream or to buy. Thank you so much, Monica. Thank you for having me.

2024.05.14 14:57 polaroid_schizoid Why 6s hate being called 6s: a memoir

Just kidding, it's not a memoir. Yes, I'm back at it again with everyone's favorite topic. Anyway, there's a few reasons 6s despise being called 6s and why they might mistype so easily:

1. 6s are naturally attuned to sentiment analysis.

What do I mean by this? I mean that 6s are very carefully listening to the things that people say, the chatter that goes around, because they don't want to be left out of the loop. It doesn't matter what variant the 6 is, this "attunedness" is one of the defining and characteristic traits of 6s. In unhealthier 6s this verges on the edge of paranoia, sometimes even dipping into it fully, where the 6 feels like you are talking about or more specifically against them. Usually the arguments stem from some sort of misalignment or misunderstanding of language choice where the hyper-specific language of the 6 in question doesn't match the environment. To combat this, mirroring the 6's language choice will do wonders.

2. 6s are inherently distrusting because of their ambivalence to authority.

There's a misconception that 6s somehow like being told what to do, but that is not the case. Really what they want is clarity. 6s will not accept anything that does not resonate with their truth. The ambivalence of authority and trust that 6s have often spawns from mistreatment, so when you try to tell a 6 "what they are" even if it may be true, the instinct is to deny or shut it down. Unless framed properly, 6 brain interprets it as something along the lines of "I KNOW YOU MORE THAN YOU DO" "YOU ARE LESS THAN" "YOU DON'T KNOW YOURSELF" "YOU'RE NOT [desired trait] AND NEVER WILL BE" so of course the instinct is going to thrash against it unless you have evidence of the contrary that isn't belittling. This distrust, though, is natural to the 6 so calling it out as some sort of failing isn't going to get you very far at all. It's

3. There is a genuine undercurrent of belittlement and predation.

Being openly vulnerable in this world invites harassment and scrutiny. Despite being a Head type, 6s are a bit unfortunate with being naturally expressive of their emotions. 6s wish they could simply be straightforward about things and have their needs respected, but they are aware that it's only going to lead to more trouble. Because they feel the "trouble" anyway, a more counterphobic 6 tends to get into arguments about this expressiveness, while the phobic 6s try to keep it under the hood. Predators often see young 6s as targets which is what spawns and then reinforces the natural defenses that 6s have. On the flip side though, this sudden vulnerability is a shocking component that 6s have and can catch people totally off guard even in good ways if they aren't prepared for it.
A lot of people genuinely see 6s as "weaker" 8s at best or whiny children at worst, and a lot of those people are also unconscious 6s themselves.

4. The 6 descriptions outright suck.

We all know this to be true, but the descriptions of 6s don't do it much justice leading to the community to form unjust stereotypes and give all of the positive 6 traits to someone else. Think about the various stereotypes - Analytical, intellectual? Sorry, that's a 5. Strong, tough, protective? That's an 8! Caring, sensitive, devoted? No, that's a 2. Creative, emotive, deep? That's a 4! 6s are left with... drumroll loyal, which might as well be spitting in their face to the type that is most inherently distrusting and sensitive about their natural human vulnerabilities. Pragmatism, the thing that 6s do best, isn't something that is often valued and 6s often don't see themselves in it.
Back to the first point, 6s are so attuned to this that they will reject it because they sure as hell don't see themselves as more "loyal" than anything else, nor would they consider that a strength even if they did. 6s aren't some nondescript type, but from the descriptions you'd think they are. 9s have a similar problem of being delegated to something less than and generic but their psyche doesn't demand they fight it, so they typically don't. This problem really isn't unique to the Enneagram community, it's genuinely fucking everywhere, but this is just how it happens to play out here. It's similar to "sensor discourse" in the MBTI community. This is a double whammy for the 6s who happen to feel alienated from society as a whole, because again you're essentially telling them that they're not only boring but that they don't experience the alienation that they do. "You make up all of society as a whole!!" No, no we don't. 6s are just one of the more vocal types.

5. 6s have naturally low self-worth and struggle with identity.

The burden of consciousness comes at a cost, and for 6s it means they typically start out with a low sense of self-worth. Growth for 6s is accepting this burden of consciousness and becoming a truly confident being. Some 6s take on a more aloof or rash persona to combat this, but true confidence is not something that can be faked. Unfortunately though this can be so convincing that even the 6 is not aware of their self worth, as "what they feel is what everyone feels" (unconscious projection). It can't be understated that these mechanisms are truly unconscious so they won't even know they are doing it, which means until the 6 can identify it within themselves they have to fight and test it.
Being an attachment type, 6s can struggle with identity. Unlike 9s, they typically are only aware of what they are not. It isn't until the patterns have crystallized and become identifiable to the 6 that they feel they know who they are. This is again not something that can be touched externally, but accepting what they are in the moment goes a long way.
To avoid the problem of 6s complaining or mistyping, it takes pretty much the same thing it does for everything else wrong with the world: An open discussion, but also empathy. 6s crave an understanding more than anything else, so showing them that you are trying is often good enough to put down the knife. Basically, let the 6 come to their own conclusions.
Personally, the only people historically that have snapped me out of my aggressive moments were the kind ones. The rest I could easily brandish as "against me", but not the kind ones. Try to be more kind with the things you say, even if you are joking. As much as I like the dog joke, doing it all the time without content of substance about 6s is just going to reinforce all of the trigger points. If you're going to be joking about someone or something in general, it's best if you don't "punch down". Hopefully this post will change at least some things people think.
Woof woof.

2024.05.14 14:55 treetopplatoe Looking to divorce and leave abuser.

I(33M) have been married to my wife(31F) for 5 years and together for 13. Together we have a daughter(10F). My wife was born with a metabolic disease and has fibermialga. We bought a home in DE not long after having our daughter. Once we moved into our home my wife has been rather abusive to the both of us. She dosent harm me physically(not intentionally)but will always randomly snap and start screaming or try putting me down. Holding that the mortgage of the house is in her name and she makes more money then I. For our daughter its been much worse since we moved in. Their's been a hand full of times, she looses control and it wont just be screaming. I usually can prevent physical harm and deescalate the situation by stepping in but not always. She would be yelling at her to a point of a panic attack needing me to calm our daughter down after stepping in. With my wife trying to smear saying "our daughter is acting like a little psycho". I always feared how much worse it must be when im not around. It came to a point a few years ago my mother had to pull me aside in suspecting my daughter and I were being abused. I was scared and tried to play it down and would talk to my wife. After trying to do so my wife admitted to having anger issues and would be willing to seek help. Even after a anger management class she still blows up constantly. This has been going on till the most recent incident Feb 4th of this year. My wife and daughter started having a screaming match leading to my wife slapping our daughter across the face. I ran to the room to extinguish the situation gabbing and calming down our daughter. My wife quickly apologized crying playing it down to not call the cops. Reassuring everything is okay and she wouldnt do it again. I was in such shock of what I witnessed I just let it slide.
Its been a few months now it this still eats at me making me feel physically ill around my wife. She hasent been violent(what i know of) since, but still has been loosing her temper. I don't like leaving the two of them home alone. I tend to walk into the house after work to them arguing. Ive tried talking to her about how I feel but she plays it down and cries to make me feel bad for confronting her and says she will try to be more calm, its not her fault, her mother was mean to her too in the oast and dosent want to be like her.
I don't know what to do or how to get out. We have a joint bank account, living pay check to pay check with not much in savings. I don't really have a place to go either. My parents live a town over and will be moving out of state in a month. They're also already accompanied by my older brother his wife, and also my younger sister living with them. So space would be hard for the two of us. What should I do? Is it to late to press any kind of charges? Do I have to wait for another incident to get evidence, since this would be just my daughter's and I word? How do I report abuse? Would it be possible to have full custody? I have so many questions...Sorry for how long this is or if it belongs here. I'm just lost and feel trapped.

2024.05.14 14:55 fail_better_ Can someone explain ECTS and degree recognition to me?

Hi everyone,
I apologise for what I’m sure is a very basic question that might be considered common knowledge. I’m just now learning about just how different the university systems are between my home country (Australia) and Germany.
Context: I was hoping to take advantage of the Blue Card System, which requires university degree recognition. My degree is a Bachelor of Policing from Charles Sturt University and I’m due to graduate at the end of May. My university is included on the Anabin list, but not my degree. I understand that I would need to apply to the ZAB for a statement of comparability. This is where my questions begin!
Questions: 1. Is there any way to know if my degree will be able to be found comparable? It would help to know if I’m going down the right track here, and if I am being realistic in my hopes a comparability certificate might be issued.
  1. As far as I can tell.. these ECTS things play a role in the value of my degree in Germany and its chances of being found comparable. How do I know how many of these magical EU school beans my degree is worth?
  2. I am considering studying a masters when I’ve finished my pretty useless bachelors degree. I have heard that if a masters must have a thesis included to have any German relevance.. is this true? Dumb follow up question bonus round, how do I know if my selected masters degree includes a German worthy thesis?
There seem to be a few people here super across this stuff so I’m hoping someone can shine a bit of a light on this for me!

2024.05.14 14:55 Local_Calendar_4958 Soon to be college grad looking for advice

I’m 21m and a week away from my 22nd birthday, but just a few days away from my undergraduate graduation. I earned a degree in communications (seems to be useless). I just joined Reddit and I see people bring their personal situations here and get a bunch of advice so I’m looking for the same.
I lost my dad when I was 4 and my mom when I was 16, so guidance is minimal. I’ve managed to get by decently. Played division one football and earning my degree, but now so lost on what’s next and what matters to me. I currently work as a server at a restaurant. My overhead is low because I live with a mom’s ex-boyfriend who generously lets me stay there rent free. Probably around 1000 a month in expensive and make about 3500 a month as a server.
Obviously I want to have some financial security, maybe family, not sure about much else. I’m trying to channel all of my experience and answer the tough questions like what do I want to do for the rest of my life and who I want to be. Any advice for self discovery? Any response is appreciated.

2024.05.14 14:53 EntrepreneurTasty167 Just found out about Limerence, it's ruining my life & my 7 year relationship

So recently I just found out about Limerence and it's spot on what I am experiencing. It's by far one of the most intense, unpleasant and horrible experiences of my mental health so far and that's saying a lot.
I have been with my SO for 7 years and she's a wonderful woman. My rational brain works and can see that, we had our ups and downs over the years but nothing we couldn't work through. We communicated, we had a good life and we generally got on really well. Then WHAM limerence came along and threw a wrench in the gears.
My LO I met 10 years ago, We bumped into each other in a bar and we developed feeling for one another but never got together because I got overly attached (fast limerence or infatuation) and couldn't handle her going out seeing other people regularly. It was twisting my insides and I had to call it off before I lost my mind, I also slept with another woman so my LO gave up and suddenly was in a relationship with another guy a week or so later.
The worst part in all of this is we decided to stay friends and would see each other off again, on again. The worst because I thought about her for 10 years... 10 YEARS. I couldn't stop thinking about her even during years of NC. Anyway she's now back in my life...
I thought I was in love with her and my SO was just a relationship that ran it's course, but now I am starting to see the truth. It was limerence with the other woman so I could never fully commit myself to this relationship or with anyone, I always felt like something was missing or someone was missing. That someone being my LO, If anything by being NC only made the feelings grow stronger over the years. I always measured up these women I dated to the LO which these woman can never meet because of the standard in my mind I had created.
Now that LO is back in my life and we're talking my stomach is in knots and my emotions are all over the place. I told my LO about my relationship problems with my SO which was a huge mistake. Now my LO keeps asking what's going on, explaining I should just leave for my happiness etc. My LO even said she has feelings for me and said "Well, maybe we can be together again in the future?" this threw a huge nuclear bomb on the fire. She said she has feelings for me a while back but never spoke about it since.
I am now in a mess of did I question my relationship with my 7 year long partner because I had limerence? Were there problems before I got back in contact with my LO? I feel like I can't function because of these type of questions. I even find myself crying in public and have to rush to find a quiet spot to have my moment. My entire being feels shattered and ripped apart. I can see my LO repeating the same behaviors that I knew of her 10 years ago, I can even appreciate the flaws she has.
Last time I was with her, LO was on her phone talking to someone she called "the one who got away", meanwhile I am sat there trying to listen to everything she says to try figure out how she feels about me to confirm my delusions.
My SO is starting to question why I am behaving so strangely, she said I am distant, not affectionate and when we have sex I always think of my LO. I hate it. My SO even started to question a break up and it snapped me back to reality and my heart started to break at the thought of losing her. Now I am in a messed up situation with my SO and LO. My LO knows about my SO but my SO doesn't know about my LO, she knows we hang out but nothing beyond that.
I am in therapy and never spoke about it so I will mention it to my therapist next appointment so this can be addressed. Limerence is going to destroy my life and I am terrified if I lose everything to a fantasy that it will be the end of me, quite literally. I don't want to keep experiencing this, the emotional pain is unbearable.
