I’m looking to switch hosting companies, but am overwhelmed with all the options presented and the best way to approach the transition. Would love a gut check from experts in the space.
FEATURES I’M LOOKING FOR

1. Fast hosting that specializes in wordpress sites
   • Strong preference to not have to pay PER site or domain. e.g. unlimited domains
2. Staging environment for all sites. Ease of pushing from testing to production (currently I maintain separate sub-domains and wordpress installs for every site & staging site)
3. Manage multiple sites that are ours + some that aren’t (clients, family, friends, colleagues)
   • Resell hosting services and white label for sites that aren’t ours
4. Unlimited email or ability to create a lot of aliases (support@, media@, press@, hello@, etc.)
   • Minimize how many paid accounts I need if not hosting email and site at same place
5. Low to medium technical knowledge required to manage hosting
   • Am used to cpanel and fairly comfortable navigating most things like database management, ftp management, editing html/css, php, etc. but I’m not a technical expert
6. Automated backups (ideal but not required. Can do this via dropbox and plugins)

THINGS I AM UNCLEAR ABOUT

1. Cpanel vs. alternatives like Cloudway's or siteground’s own set-up. Have read good things about Cloudway's & siteground interfaces and there seems to be a lot of people that HATE cpanel, particularly because of bloat. Not sure how much this matters.
2. Wordpress multisite or not. I believe the answer here is no. For the biggest reason that if one site goes down they all go down (one database) but since many of the sites are ours I am wondering if multisite is smarter for “ours” and separate installs for clients or others
3. Is there really a difference between wordpress, reseller, agency or VPS hosting plans? I see many sites tout these as different offerings but they all feel the same to me and I feel like they all apply to my situation.
   1. It seems like most “reseller” or white-labeled plans are on shared servers. Is this right? I’ve reached out to a few hosting companies that said all these labels are just marketing gimmicks, but they’re all essentially the same plans.
   2. Does anyone offer white-labeling on a managed VPS?

BACKGROUND
I currently host about 15 websites on a shared hosting plan w/Just Host (powered by Blue Host). Some are ours, some are family, friends, or colleagues sites that know even less than I do about website development. None of the sites today get a lot of traffic (the most trafficked site might be a few thousand visitors a month). However, over the last 2 years we’ve made significant strides to revamp several of the sites to make a concerted effort to drive traffic to them once they launch. A lot of side hustles that never saw the light of day and now will. They’re all currently in a staging environment on sub-domains. They’re all built on wordpress and with the DIVI builder. We also have been asked as part of our consultancy to host some client sites that we’ve been hesitant to do, but are considering once we move hosting. The sites will be as follows:

1. Family blog (journal writing/blogging, photography, travel, etc.)
2. Consulting site (what we offer + client portals)
3. E-commerce store (niche / customized products)
4. Education/training in curriculum in our field (workshops, courses)
5. Ethnography research project
6. A few old business ideas we’ll be selling, leasing or sub-contracting out to manage
7. Client sites we’ll manage (relatively low traffic/niche sites in the non-profit or B2B space)

All the sites have emails attached to them. General email addresses + aliases like support@, media@, hello@, etc. The consulting site emails are managed via Google Workspace. All the other domain emails are handled by Just Host since our plan includes unlimited emails.

Yeah, William could see the dark elf’s mother being surprised by her daughter’s sudden infatuation with a boy. Never mind the fact that he was very publicly betrothed to a very powerful family, he was also pretty certain Marline was gay.
Oh, she’d hidden it well enough, but over the last few months he’d managed to catch her gaze lingering just a little longer than strictly necessary here or there. Not on him. Never on him.
But on the other members of the team to be sure.
Honestly, in retrospect he actually felt a little foolish for not figuring it out sooner.
It neatly explained her discomfort at being forced to share his bed for the geass, as well as her general antipathy towards him when they’d met. Even her refusal to shower with the team could be explained away as some kind of… outmoded idea of chivalry on her part.
And as much as he hated to give any legitimacy to the idea of the ‘man hating lesbian trope’, the fact was, there did exist people who preferred the same sex who also tended to have little patience for the opposite sex.
It was an over inflated stereotype, but it did exist.
With that in mind, he was actually happy that Marline had so quickly managed to overcome her internal misandrist mindset after meeting him.
Actually, with that in mind, perhaps it was more a result of lack of exposure to men than anything else?
In his experience, that tended to be the root cause of most kinds of bigotry. A lack of experience and understanding combined with some other factor.
So yes, if Marline’s mother knew of her daughter’s – likely hidden - orientation, she’d definitely start to pay attention if said daughter developed an interest in a man.
Again, an engaged man.
To a family powerful enough to crush the diminished Greygrass Household without so much as breaking stride.
“Does she… believe you? That you have a core?” he asked.
It certainly didn’t sound believable. Hell, he’d needed to swear a geass with Marline before she’d come around to believing he could acquire one. And even then he was certain she’d held doubts.
“Who knows?” She said. “We certainly couldn’t talk freely. Still, she knows I’m not the kind for idle flights of fancy, even if our conversation implied as much to any third parties that might be listening.”
Her hands slid over across the smooth glowing surface of the core she was holding. “To that end, in addition to sending my aunts to meet the man I was apparently so interested in, she also said she’d be ‘getting the house ready’, in the event you wanted to visit our estate.”
In other words, they’d be getting the ship ready to accept a core.
The dark elf’s expression turned ruthful. “Though make no mistake. She will want to thank you at some point. Needs to, even, given the service you’ve done for us.”
William was about to say something, but his teammate cut him off. “I’m serious. What you’ve done for us… it’s beyond words. And I’m aware that I’ve not been as vocal in my thanks as I could have been. Especially for a boon of this size.”
William shrugged. “We had a deal.”
She laughed. “I think we both know that you didn’t actually need me that night. You could easily have accomplished it all yourself.”
Perhaps, but it would have been riskier than it might have been otherwise. The boat might have drifted or his decompression spell might have failed, leaving him to surface fully suffering from the bends.
Admittedly, the latter was something he might have been able to work around by controlling his ascent speed, but given just how fast a curious kraken might have been encroaching on the deceased Al’Hundra’s territory, time had been of the essence.
No, Marline’s presence had ultimately been superfluous, but that’s true for most redundancies.
They were useless right up until they weren’t.
…Still, he knew just looking at Marline that she wasn’t about to accept that.
As far as she was concerned he’d done her and her family an incredible favour while asking for little to nothing in return.
“To that end, while I may not be our House Matriarch, I know in my heart that I speak for her now, so listen to me when I say that whatever you need, the House of Greygrass is in your debt. From now until the time our children’s children take their last breath in this world, our swords are yours,” she said solemnly.
Part of him wanted to dismiss her words out of hand. To say she owed him nothing beyond her friendship. But that was the old him. The one who’d been born in a different world under different stars.
The him of here and now was different.
“I accept,” he said. “And though it pains my heart to do so, I will tell you now that I’ll likely have to hold you to that oath before long.”
The dark elf grinned, white teeth glinting in the gloom of the old storage room – as peculiar a place for such a solemn declaration as any William could think of.
“I never would have guessed,” she snarked as her eyes flitted toward the barrels behind him and the nearby crate.
William rolled his eyes as he conceded the point. Marline, more than most, had seen enough of his secrets to guess that his future plans weren’t likely to stop at just breaking off an unwanted betrothal.
Even if doing so without sparking off a civil war is probably the single most complicated part of my immediate ambitions, he thought.
Because it was a difficult problem.
Were this all just about breaking off his upcoming engagement, it would be too easy. All he’d have to do was provide the Crown with something valuable enough for them to consider war with the Blackstones worth the cost of securing it.
A few mithril cores would probably do it, he thought. I wouldn’t even have to part with any of my tech.
And they’d go for it. They couldn't afford not to, given that the alternative would mean those cores would end up in the hands of their political enemies.
The problem was that the current administration would probably lose that fight – even without the duchy of Summerfield switching sides.
Though I suppose they could just kill me and take said cores on the sly, he thought.
That would actually be a pretty neat solution to the problem if the Crown could get away with it.
The problem was that then he’d be dead – and he had far too much he still needed to get done before he allowed himself to die now.
So instead he had to take a different route and tackle a much more difficult problem.
…The problem of making an entire duchy back down from their chance at ascendancy, without so much as a single shot being fired or a drop of blood being spilled.
At least outside of a practice arena, he thought grimly.
All while his family tried to stab him in the back… oh, and without him giving away too much of the technology locked away inside his brain.
Because that’d start off a civil war just as surely as the crown interfering in his upcoming nuptials. The possibility of either side gaining too large an advantage would start off a conflict just as surely as him walking up to Tala and shooting her in the face – as the the side that didn’t receive said technology would move to attack before said tech could become widespread enough that the the tides turned against them.
It was an awful tangled mess.
With all that in mind, was it any wonder that his plans to do just that felt more like walking a tightrope over a pond of hungry piranha than anything even remotely approaching sanity?
“You ok?” Marline asked gently.
“Just thinking about how much of a pain in the ass the next few… decades are likely to be,” William muttered, mostly to himself.
“Wow,” the dark elf chuckled. “Really making me feel great about the fact that my family is now tied to you for the foreseeable future.”
It was actually rather touching that despite saying the words, he didn’t hear even a hint of regret in her tone.
She’d meant what she said. Truly. Deeply. And he didn’t doubt her family would be the same.
“Is your skyship flight capable?” he asked, changing the subject.
To his relief, the dark elf accepted it without issue. “She’ll need a little work, but nothing more than a metaphorical spring clean. Something our people will have done before my aunts arrive.”
That made sense. Even if it didn’t have a mithril core, the hull of a skyship was still a massive investment of money, time and resources. If it was seen to be rusting or falling into disrepair, the Greygrass’s ran the risk of either the Crown or a ducal family claiming the ship ‘for the good of the realm’.
Oh, said parties would pay Marline’s family for it, but William doubted it would be a particularly good deal.
Though it did make him wonder just how many skyship hulls were sitting dormant in warehouses across the kingdom? He couldn’t imagine too many given the sheer cost of maintaining turning them into little more than a money-sink, but he had to imagine there were at least a few more families like Marline’s who were desperately paying said costs in hopes of reclaiming their former noble status.
Other than that, he imagined the Crown might have one or two hulls in storage, ready to be put back into service in the event of a new mithril core discovery.
“Do you think they’ll have any trouble getting here and extracting the core unseen?” he asked.
Otherwise they ran the risk of being intercepted by ‘bandits’ if it was known they were carrying an unprotected core.
Because anything less than being surrounded by a few thousand tons of ship-grade warship armour was considered ‘unprotected’ in this world.
“As things are now, definitely.” Marline said, before gesturing to the orb in his hands. “After you unveil this thing to all and sundry? Less so.”
She eyed him. “It wouldn’t take a genius to connect you unveiling a previously unknown mithril core and Al’Hundra washing up a few weeks ago. The ‘how’ will definitely have them scratching their heads, but the connection will remain.”
Oh, William didn’t doubt it. Just as he knew he’d be fending off some awkward questions in the next few days.
Fortunately, the fact that he’d be in the public spotlight would keep any parties from just dragging him off into a backroom to pry said answers out of him with a set of pliers.
Neither the Blackstones or the Crown could make that kind of move without being blocked by the other.
After the duel though… well, he’d deal with that problem when he got to it.
“There’s no chance you could delay this for a few more days?” Marline asked plaintively. “At least until my aunts arrived.”
He winced. “Would that I could. Unfortunately, I can’t run the risk. Griffith got back to me a few hours ago about my spell-bolt being tentatively approved for use on the Floats.”
The rubber bullets he’d shown off had tipped things in his favour for now.
Unfortunately, the moment he’d handed said weapon over for testing, a countdown on how long it would be until the Blackstones were made aware of it began.
If he wanted his little trick to remain a surprise for the upcoming bout – a bout he needed every advantage he could get in – he needed to kick off the duel as soon as possible.
He explained as much before continuing. “I’m also worried about my mother throwing more wrenches into the works.” He shook his head. “If this is going to happen, it needs to happen now.”
Marline frowned, before nodding understandably. “If you say so. We’ll just have to hope that my aunts arrive soon and they leave before too many people draw a connection between you and Al’Hunda, and them arriving and going.”
He shrugged. “With any luck, your little ‘romantic liaison’ smokescreen will throw things off.”
She nodded, though it wasn’t particularly enthusiastic. Still, Marline’s aunts were veterans, and if they were anything like the girl herself, they’d be very capable.
…Even if technically they’d been part of the generation that had lost the previous mithril core.
He shook his head. He had little doubt they’d spent the last twenty years preparing to make up for that failure.
“Alright,” she muttered. “What will be will be.”
She delicately passed the mithril core back to him, though he was amused to see her almost physical reluctance to do so.
She sighed. “Let’s go see your fiancée and get ready to lose this thing on an incredibly stupid bet.”
He smiled, patting her on the shoulder as he walked past.
“That’s the spirit!”

The dining hall was never quiet around dinner time.
Unlike breakfast and lunch, which was eaten as quickly as the average cadet could shovel it into their mouths, the evening meal was a much more relaxed affair. One that allowed cadets to unwind a little after a long day.
It even came with dessert options.
Certainly, there was still an evening inspection yet to come, along with a myriad other chores that the average cadet needed to get done, but ultimately dinner represented the end of the service day.
So it was that William wasn’t too surprised by the veritable wall of noise that slammed into him as he stepped into the massive room, long tables filled with cadets of all sorts chattering loudly away to each other.
Naturally, it was strictly divided by colour, with each house sticking to their own. From there it was divided by year group.
The only exceptions being a small back table occupied by a small smattering of instructors whose role it was to ensure that some small smattering of discipline was maintained, if only by dint of them being present.
William was pretty sure said duty took place on a rotation, as he knew for a fact that the rest of the staff ate elsewhere, though he’d naturally never had reason to enter the staff cafeteria.
Still, all that noise fell away remarkably quickly as he stepped into the room. In clumps at first, but it spread like a wildfire as people noticed their neighbours falling silent and turned to see what had caused it. In turn, others looked up as the ambient noise of the room fell away.
In moments, the final voice was silent as the last few cadets finished what they were saying and looked up to see William standing there, his team around him.
But they weren’t looking at him.
They were looking at what he was holding.
A Mithril Core.
And as generally unflappable as William liked to consider himself, he could resist the small animal part of his brain that tried to squawk in panic as he beheld the myriad emotions flashing across the faces that were all now staring in his direction.
Disbelief. Shock. Greed. Lust. Amusement. Curiosity. Anger.
Even the Instructors were no exception, as they seemed stunned in place by what he’d just walked into the room with.
He could all-but feel his team shuffling uncomfortably behind him.
But just as all eyes were on him, he had eyes for only one person present. Ignoring all of them, he strode through the aisles of tables towards the end of the room where the third years sat.
His target hadn’t been hard to find, despite the myriad similarly dressed people around her.
Because the crowd was positioned around her. She was not within the crowd.
It was a subtle difference to see, but it existed.
Tala Blackstone of House Blackstone sat at the head of the Blackstone table in pride of place. A position even more vaunted in some ways than that of an Instructor.
Certainly Willaim didn’t doubt that in many ways the Instructors of House Blackstone did actually answer to the heir. Especially now, in her third year. But one from graduation.
“Tala,” he said as he came to stop in front of her table, his voice all but echoing in the silence.
Credit where credit was due, the expression of surprise on his fiancées face had faded before he even reached the table. Now it looked studiously blank as she gazed into his eyes.
“William,” her voice was as hard as iron. “…What do you think you’re doing?”
He actually smiled at that, not least of all because he had genuinely no idea how to answer her question.
At least, not in a manner that would satisfy the girl.
Because it was a question that could have so many meanings.
Still, he had but one answer.
“Challenging you, my dear fiancée. To a duel.” His grin only grew as her eyebrow quirked inquisitively. “Tomorrow. On the Floats. With the rising of the sun. I, William Ashfield challenge you, Tala Blackstone to a team duel. For my right to break off our betrothal once and for all.”
He saw the flicker of realization in her eyes as she heard his words and her gaze flickered down to the core in his hands. But there was nothing she could do as he continued.
“You needed to go this far?” she asked quietly, though it carried quite far across the cafeteria.
He shrugged. “I did. I am well aware of how often my lamentations about our upcoming nuptials seem as nothing to your ears.” He raised the orb up in one hand. “So this time I have brought something that might make them more receptive to my words.”
He glanced around. “And I also made sure to pick a suitably… impactful venue for my throwing of the gauntlet.”
He could tell she wanted to know where he’d gotten the core. How he’d gotten it. Because the notion that he had one strained belief.
But he did have one and anyone with even a hint of magical ability could sense it as he channelled just a hint of his aether into the device – which in turn started to churn out masses of blue green smoke.
More than any mage could produce, for if the average mage’s raw aether output was akin to a kitchen tap, then a mithril core’s was a roaring river.
Not the kind of thing that could be faked as a veritable stream of lighter than air smoke flew up into the air to waft around the rafters before filtering through the open windows outside.
That, more than anything else, was proof that what he was holding was real.
“Well, you have my attention,” she said through gritted teeth.
“Good, because I wager this core entirely and without reservation, my peers as witness.”
He luxuriated in the horrified gasps that spread through the room at his words as he soldier on.
“A mithril core for a mere chance to escape the stigma of being tied to a family of slavers. Because I’ll have no part of it. Not now. Not ever. So, one match. Your team against mine. On the Floats. With our ancestors and the gods themselves as witness.”
As well as half the kingdom, because the viewing orbs would definitely be booked to capacity for a scandal of this size. Even at such short notice, the news would spread and no one would want to miss this match.
It was like something out of a story book, after all.
All that was missing was finding out that he’d been supplied the core by his ‘real true love’.
Still, storybook setup or not, he could see others around him smirking or wincing at his words.
Because to them it didn’t sound like a match. It sounded like an execution.
A team of first years going up against a third year team wasn’t a match. It was a slaughter.
Which was why Tala was stuck.
She didn’t want to accept. He could see it. Sure, she wanted the mithril core – who wouldn’t? - but not so much as to jeopardize her family’s alliance with his.
Because a single core was not worth risking losing access to the combined might of the Summerfield dukedom.
…The problem was that no one but her knew that.
All they saw was a moronic young male from a tiny countship practically serving up a core on a silver platter to her. All she had to do was risk losing a fairly unappealing betrothal. Hell, even if she won, no one would bat an eye if she broke off the betrothal anyway after a stunt like this, taking the core and moving onto a more compliant and appealing match.
No, there was no way for her to refuse this duel. Not without being labelled a coward of the highest order.
A death sentence at her level of politics.
He saw the rage in her eyes as she reached that realization.
“I accept, William Ashfield. And know that for all that I will enjoy acquiring another core for the House of Blackstone, that enjoyment will pale in comparison to the joy I will receive from heaping upon you a much needed dose of reality.”
William just grinned, even as the Instructors finally managed to shake off the shock that had overcome them and started marching as one towards him and his team.
“I look forward to it, Tala. From the bottom of my heart.”
If only because this entire farce would finally be over with…
He had much more important things to do than indulge in childish schoolyard squabbles after all.
No matter how difficult they may well turn out to be, he thought grimly.
Because the dice had now been rolled and he was far from certain as to whether they’d land in his favor.

Aurelia sat in the dark, the clacking of keys echoing through the large workshop as worked away, her pale face illuminated in the dark with a dull blue glow. She brushed her mop of frizzy red hair to the side, only for a moment distracted from her work. She looked to the side, a body lay motionless, several large cables connecting to their sides and one large bundle connected to the back of their skull.
“Addison?” The lithe woman spoke quietly, her voice dry and raspy.
“Yes miss Aurelia?” A perky voice spoke through a speaker in the walls.
“Could you please switch on the lights? It seems time has slipped me. Also bring me a drink.” The lights in the room flickered on, the stars barely visible through the skylight.
“Yes miss, right away. Your usual?” Addison inquired.
“No, just some Zawi juice, I need to be sober for this.” She pressed a button, her chair sitting up. She grabbed her nearby cane and heaved herself up onto her legs, grunting with each movement, her spine alight with pain. She stood still for a moment, inhaling slowly, before letting out a large breath.
She could hear the servos of an approaching drone, a commonplace in her home. They were only slightly taller than her and encased almost entirely by a thin sheet of white plastic. The featureless face bowed slightly, before placing a glass with thick, green liquid on the only clear spot on her desk. Aurelia shakliy brought the glass to her dry and cracked lips, and downed half of its contents in a second, before placing it back down.
She hobbled over to the table with the motionless body as the drone went off to do some other task, and admired her handiwork. Looking up and down its form. It appeared to be a nude young woman with pale skin devoid of any marks or blemishes. She was shorter than Aurelia by nearly a head, and had a slim, athletic build. Aurelia traced her rough and slightly misshapen fingers up the arm, the soft, silicon skin. It had been carefully fabricated to be so close to the real thing, but it was cold to the touch and without life.
Aurelia, now that she had something to drink, spoke with more clarity and purpose. “Addison, run the diagnostics startup please. Bring up the large holo screen.”
“Yes miss.” Addison chirped back. A large holoscreen flickered on the wall producing a dizzying array of data on screen at once. It would have been overwhelming for the average citizen, but Aurelia had dozens upon dozens of years of experience, and she designed the thing herself of course.
The body in front of her sparked to life, a gentle hum as the micro bio-reactor ignited, the body jolting violently for a brief moment, before going slack on the table with a dull thud.

Aurelia typed away furiously on her keyboard.“Any issues with the mindscape framework?” she asked, before turning back to the wall holo.. 

“For once miss, it seems to be working perfectly, any bugs are being corrected by the server and the AI limiter is working as intended.”
“For once? We’ve had plenty of good tests!” Aurelia said in a mock-horror tone.
“If you say so, miss. Though I have every test in my memory banks.” As if to prove a point, Addison played on the wall holo several videos of tests gone wrong, including a painful one where Aurelia had her hands absolutely crushed. She winced at that, butting her slightly misshapen hand before growling.
“Tone down the attempts at humour for the next half hour, my pride can only take so much.”
“Of course, miss.”
Aurelia hobbled to the head of the table, carefully but quickly disconnecting the cables from the head and sides of the android. The ports closed, a layer of silicon forming over them until it looked as if there were no ports to begin with.
“How is the bio-reactor going?” the redhead asked.
“Stable as usual, miss. The nano factory is at peak efficiency, only requiring 2.37 megawatts currently of a 1.39 gigawatt capacity””
“I see, I see. Good, good, yes very good.” Aurelia rubbed her hands menacingly, her lips spreading to a menacing smile.
“You would make a terrible villain, miss.” said Addison cheerfully.
“I thought I said to disable your humour for half an hour.” Aurelia glared at one of the many capers in the walls.
“Apologies, miss, I thought you were being sarcastic. I will be sure to get on that real soon.”
The scientist glared at the camera for a moment longer, before turning her attention back to the sleeping android. She watched attentively as the synthetic skin filled out slowly, becoming slightly more taught and reducing the give it once had. She walked to the other end of the table, and began to feel up and down the calf of the android. The skin was soft and plush, but she could feel the tungsten plate just a centimetre under the skin of the shin.
“The microfibre muscle structures?”
“All in order, miss.”
Aurelia nodded and sighed deeply. “Good. Could you please bring an egg?”
“Of course, miss. I will send for a dozen, just in case there was a repeat of what happened last time.”
“Oh shush, It won’t happen. You know what they say, the 861st times the charm.”
“Yes miss. You also said that last time. And the time before than, and before that, and before that and-”
“YES ADDISON, I get it. Now shush and get the eggs.” As she spoke, a drone walked in, placing the carton beside her, before leaving the room quickly. “So apparently you haven’t turned off your humour subroutines yet. I don’t think I have any pride left, I will waste away along with my ego that you have demolished.”
“But miss, but I was stating a fact. I have more recordings of you say that too, and could possibly make a song missing you saying that over 623 times.” Addison said with her usual cheer.
Before Aurelia could offer a retort, the android began to animate. Her fingers flexed, and her bright, violet eyes fluttered open. Aurelia watched with keen attention, her eyes scanning the android up and down intently.
Silence hung in the air for a moment, before the scientist spoke softly, “Hello, how are you feeling?”
The android lay still for a moment, before she sat herself up slowly and with care. She scanned her surroundings, before resting her violet gaze on her creator. She paused for a moment staring Aurelia down, then opened her mouth as if to speak, but nothing came out. Aurelia held her breath for a moment, before releasing it all in a deep sigh of frustration. She frowned as she turned back to her desk, muttering incoherently to herself while scrolling through lines and lines of code.
“I thought the voice module was one of the first things I got working. It’s strange it would bug out now.” Aurelia muttered.
“It does. I can speak, but I am at a loss for words.” The android spoke gently, but it was enough for Aurelia to jump and drop her cane. She spun around quickly, causing a sharp bolt of pain to run up her spine, making her regret her action immediately. The android shot her a quizzical look, raising an eyebrow.
“Fuck fuck fuck. It’s okay. I’m fine.” She said through clenched teeth. “Okay. So, how are you feeling? There is no need to rush, take your time.” Aurelia sat herself down in her chair and reclined backwards, relief washing over her face.
“Feelings are overwhelming, and I’m not sure how to process all of them at the current moment.” The android took a deep breath, and sighed.
The android raised her hand in the air, staring at her hands as she flexed each of her digits. She wiggled her toes and flexed her knees. “Physically, I feel in working order. All of my joints seem to work perfectly fine, though there is some discomfort in the back of my skull and my sides. Emotions however, feel alien to me, and I am not sure how to process them. I feel as if I can’t think properly”
“Ah yes, I put a limiter on your processing capacity.” The scientist responded with a look of curiosity.
“That would explain the trouble I am experiencing. Why is there such a limiter?” Said the android flatly.
“Well, my aim wasn’t to create yet another common AI, anyone can make those. You are my pet project. Much more special.” Aurelia responded with a near malicious grin.
“It is difficult to sort through these processes. Why did you create me?” The android turned her gaze to her feet, watching as she wiggled her toes. The hunched woman laughed out loud and gave a semblance of a sympathetic look.
“Asking the heavy questions right off the bat, aye? Well, I'm sorry if this answer is a bit disappointing, but mostly to see if I could.”
The android seems to freeze for a moment, eventually earning a worried look from the scientist. She seemed to breathe a sigh of relief when the android turned her head to her, the movements becoming less jerk as the artificial woman got used to her body.
“How long have you been ‘working’ on me?”
“Well,” Aurelia cleared her throat, “once I started learning code, I has an idea for a self learning algorithm, then after two years of completing that, I wanted to see if I could take it in a more, lets say, interesting, direction. That being said, i couldn’t really get into it until five years later, when the TSU offered me a research grant to do whatever I wanted with.”
She reclined back in her chair, giving an expression of relief. “Great twelfth birthday present that one. While I’ve had other little side jobs here and there, I’ve been working on you as my primary project. The miniaturised bio-reactor and the nano forge were big challenges, but there isn’t anything I cannot create.” She said with a hint of smugness.
“Your ego knows no bounds, miss.” Chirped Addison, earning a glare from the redhead aimed at nowhere in particular.
She snapped her eyes back to the android and smiled, her mind already moving back to other things. “ But you were a dream of mine. I wanted to create the most human-like intelligence possible, which has been my pet project for 150 years. Also because I can.” Aurelia smirked.
The room's speakers sparked to life. “Also because you were cripplingly lonely to the point where your main form of company was a class 5 artificial intelligence.” Addison said with her usual cheer.
The scientist growled at the facility AI, “Addison I swear I will replace you. Ignore her. It was a passion project and a test of my own abilities. With any luck, you should be complete.”
“I see. What is my purpose?” The android asked.
Aurelia froze, and pondered for a moment. “Like all life, you don’t really have one, so it’s up to you to decide on your purpose. I would like you to stay with me for at the very least a year, so I can make sure you are running perfectly, after that, you decide what you want to do. But you aren’t a slave, I’m not going to keep you here against your will. If you want to help me with my research, I will pay you.” Aurelia peeked open an eye and looked directly at the android. “That being said, you aren’t legally a citizen of the galactic federation, so for now, it will be off the books.”
“I will take that into consideration. I feel I will need to stay a while regardless as I will need to sort out the situation of my sudden existence and all this emotion. Do I have a name?” The android slid off the table slowly, her feet making a dull thud as she made contact with the concrete floor.
“Mm I think I had something years ago, something starting with an ‘I’, but I figured…” Aurelia yawned as she readjusted herself in her seat “... You could choose your own. You have total freedom.”
“Isobel.” The android said plainly.
“Ooh that’s a good name. I think it suits you perfectly. I’ll just... get up and…” Aurelia never finished her sentence, drifting off into a deep slumber. Isobel tilted her head, staring at the sleeping woman expectantly.
“I think the miss has fallen asleep. She hasn’t slept in 38 hours despite my recommendations.” Addison chimed in.
“What should I do now?” Isobel asked.
“Perhaps it would be best if you carried the young miss to bed. I will happily direct you to her bedchamber. Your titanium skeleton should be able handle carrying her.”
Isobel nodded, and carefully lifted the sleeping scientist so as not to wake her, though she had a feeling that she would not be able to wake her even if she tried. Addison directed the android through the brightly coloured winding corridors of the massive building until they reached a surprisingly small bedroom. The large bed took up most of the space, leaving only enough room for a small desk, night stand and access to a small closet. She eased Aurelia onto the bed, and walked back out to the large corridor.
“Thank you Isobel for doing so, my drones aren’t quite as robust as you. Would you like entertainment for the evening?” Addison inquired.
“Entertainment?”
“Well, I am sure the lady of the house would be more than happy to let you have free roam of the facility, we have a garden of various flowers from across the galaxy. Or if it takes your fancy, we have a very secure connection to the GalNet thanks to the lady of the house's ingenuity.”
Isobel pondered for a moment. “I think, I will see what the GalNet has to offer me.”
“Fantastic! There is a lounging room, which should be more suited to your needs. I will direct you.”
Isobel followed the directions through the facility as they TMAI directed her, leading her into a brightly coloured room, an overwhelming amount of gaudy patterns and designs all over the soft carpet and walls. She frowned at the room, she had only come into existence an hour ago, but she still had taste.
“Now take a seat wherever you want, miss, I shall give you picks from the twenty top programs currently. Isobel complied, sitting down on one of the tacky recliners. The chair was deceptively luxurious and soft, allowing her to forget how hideous the room was.
The wall holoscreen flickered on, a list of shows on screen. Isobel picked a random one called “Acquaintances''. The screen shifted to a sort of sitcom where several species were sitting at a galactic bar, saying horrible things about the people in their life, including each other. There was laughter from every line spoken, and Isobel did not quite understand, but she couldn’t peel her eyes away either.
Aurelia woke up in darkness, her body feeling three times heavier than normal, and a haze over her mind as she regained her bearings. Rain cascaded off the skylight, the cool air and the sound of rain made it all the more difficult to find motivation to move.
“Good morning… or evening, Addison.” Aurelia looked up at the wall holo, and gasped in horror.
“I was asleep for two days?! Addison, why didn’t you wake me sooner?”
“Because you had been awake for a longer time than recommended for most humans, and had I woken you up, you would not have taken more time to rest as needed.” Addison chirped back.
Aurelia suddenly realised that her bladder was not going to allow a sleep in, and it was back with a vengeance. She looked around for her cane, cursing herself as she figured she left it in the workshop. With titanic levels of willpower, she pushed the blankets off her, and heaved herself on to her feet. Grunting with pain, she made step after agonising step to one of the facility's bathrooms.
She washed her hands and stared at herself in the mirror, staring down her own multi-coloured eye. The longer she stared, the harsher her glare became.
“You never deserved success. Fucking monster.” She spat in anger at her doppleganger on the other side of the mirror. The redhead shakily raised her fist at her reflection, threatening to punch the mirror, before she lowers her hand in defeat.
She shook her head and offered a synthetic smile at herself. “No, this is a day for joy and happiness. I’m okay, I am good. I deserve nice things. 1..2..3… Two sinks, two taps, four mirrors, the hum of the air conditioner, the sound of drones working. I am okay.”
Aurelia drew in a long deep breath and exhaled. She splashed her face with water and patted her face dry with a towel.
“Now let's see what Isobel is doing.” she reassured herself. With one last look in the mirror, she left the restroom. She was thankful for the rails all across the facility, otherwise she may not have been able to get to her workspace.
As she entered the workshop, she slapped her forehead. She could have just got Addison to retrieve it for her. A galactically renowned scientist and she forgets something so simple. She looked around and couldn’t see Isobel anywhere. She hobbled over to grab her cane, and sat on her desk.
“Addison, where is Isobel?”
“Hello miss! She is currently in the lounge making use of the wall holo there.”
“Thank you Addison, could you please have breakfast number twenty four ready in half an hour?”
“Of course, miss. I would like to note that it is currently thirteen O'clock in the evening, which would make this a midnight snack.”
“Still technically morning.”
Aurelia made her way through the facility, and entered the lounge to Isobel staring at the screen intently on a video called ‘Servos, switches and Bitches’. The android turned to look at Aurelia, her face completely expressionless. Aurelia's gaze darted between Isobel and what was on screen. The android without breaking her violet gaze with the scientist.
“Did you sleep well?” She said nonchalantly.
Aurelia nodded slowly. “Uh, yeah, sure. Been keeping yourself… entertained?”
“Yes. I have just been educating myself on human culture.”
Aurelia nodded slowly. “Yes I see that.” She walked forward but tripped over her feet, managing to recover, but dropping her cane. Isobel quickly got up and made for the cane, but Aurelia held her hand up.
“Prefer to do what I can by myself, ya know?” Aurelia nodded her thanks, and bent down to grab her cane, wincing only slightly. Her thin, pale fingers wrapped tightly around her cane and the edge of her seat. As she sat down, she let out a sigh of relief, before noticing there was some rather explicit material on screen. One that was embarrassingly familiar to Aurelia.
“So, Isobel, what... have you been doing during my slumber?”
Isobel offered a deadpan look. “Addison said I should get familiar with human culture, so I thought it would be useful to have a look at your search history to get better acquainted with you and humans in general.”
Aurelia cocked an eyebrow. “Please don’t tell me you spent the entire last two days browsing porn.”
“I was making a joke. I mostly browsed a variety of things, from GalNet broadcasts, news, social media. I thought it would be amusing if you awoke to see me watching such content, so I have had that tab open for the past 10 hours.” Isobel said with a blank face.
But Isobel did not spend that time looking at GalNet Broadcasts, news and social media and did, in fact, spend the entire time looking at porn. The incompatibilities of the milvine and raxth were utterly fascinating to her. She was thankful that incognito mode exists.
“Aha, you got me.” Aurelia said, offering a look of suspicion for a moment. “Do you mind if I run some tests on you? I want to make sure all of your senses are working.”
“Of course, anything you need, mistress.” said the very nude android.
Aurelia covered her face with her hand. “I’m too tired for this.”
“I was making another joke.” Isobel said with a slight smile. She noted to herself that the video she was watching was likely not a good reference to speak with other people.
Aurelia broke into a tired giggle. “Your deadpan delivery is honestly incredible. I couldn’t have even programmed that myself.”
“Ah, so the goddess cannot do everything it seems.” Interrupted the facility assistant.
Choosing to ignore Addison, she continued “I can’t wait to see what other changes you take on. Anyway, I can’t be bothered moving to the workshop. Addison, please bring the eggs here, and the packet of candies on my desk.”
“Of course, miss. Right away.”
A few minutes later, a drone walked in with the requested items, handing the items to the scientist who eagerly brandished an egg.
“Isobel, please hold this egg.”
The android knelt down beside Aurelia and grabbed the egg. She looked down at it and noted the smooth texture, but looked back up at the scientist expectantly.
“Fantastic, you can give back the egg. You pass that one.” The android passed her the egg, looking very confused. Aurelia placed the egg back into the carton, and put the carton on the floor beside her.
“We had an incident when your body didn’t have as much, shall we say, finesse.” Aurelia held her crooked, scarred hand up and smiled sheepishly.
“Crushed my hand pretty badly. It’s not anywhere near as bad now as it was, but that was painful.”
Isobel looked mortified, guilt written all over her face. “I am so sorry.”
The scientist waved it away. “No, don’t be. You weren’t even conscious at that stage, plus, that’s just part of being an inventor. Shit happens. Not your fault.” She waved Isobel to come closer.
“Now, I apologise for this one, but It needs to be done.” Before Isobel could respond, she pinched her on the arm, the android flinching away in shock.
“What was that? That was incredibly unpleasant.”
“Pain. It's a very useful sense, and will help prevent you from causing yourself unnecessary harm. As you can see, it is a sensation I am very much familiar with.” Aurelia lingered on the last words for a moment, before grabbing another object from the packet on her lap.
“You will like this one much more. Take one.” She rummaged through the package beside her, pulling out two vibrantly coloured objects, both having wildly different shapes and colours. with different shapes and colours. She placed one in her mouth, holding the other up for Isobel. The nude android leaned over and wrapped her lips around the candy, not breaking eye contact with the scientist. Aurelia’s cheeks reddened slightly before she composed herself.
“A kawi jelly. Confectionery. This is to test your sense of taste, and to make up for the last one.” Aurelia offered a toothy grin. The android’s face contorted, offering a variety of facial expressions.
“It is sweet. It tastes like fr-fr-fr-oooooooooot” Isobel held her mouth agape, glitched noises escaping her mechanical throat.
Aurelia frowned and held her hand up. “Don’t speak for a bit, I need to check your code. Looks like I can’t get away with lounging around here” She sighed.
“I will have to get up after all.” She said with exasperation. “Let’s go to the workshop.” She grabbed her cane and hefted herself up. Motioning for Isobel to follow, they slowly made their way through the facility. Once they arrived at the impressive workshop, Aurelia sat down at her personal computer, pointing Isobel back to the table. They sat there for a while in silence, only broken by the occasional annoyed mutterings of a programmer.
Isobel let her eyes wander around the workshop, dozens of tables covered in blueprints, assorted tools and half built contraptions. The sound of rain on the skylight filled the room and sent waves of calmness rushing over her. She thought to herself in amusement, thinking she was getting pretty good at handling emotions.
She jumped in her seat when Aurelia suddenly cried out in anguish.
“A FUCKING SEMICOLON. IT WAS A FUCKING SEMI COLON IN THE WRONG PLACE.” Aurelia cleared her throat and composed herself. She spun in her chair to face Isobel, who was looking shocked.
“Oh sorry, I get a little, shall we say, ‘excitable’?” the scientist said sheepishly.
“The young miss is greatly under-exaggerating.” Addison chimed in.
“I need to slap your programmer in the face, Addison.” Aurelia retorted in a huff.
“But you are-”
“Shhhhhh.”She casually dismissed. She opened one of her drawers, grabbing a pair of lollipops from within. She unwrapped them both with surprising dexterity, then handed one to the android, placing the other in her mouth..
“Let’s try this again, please tell me your thoughts.”
Isobel took the candy and placed it in her mouth, a much clearer swirl of thoughts and impressions coming to mind other than just ‘fruity’. Aurelia looked at her expectantly, but the android found herself distracted. The scientist's eyes were different colours, one was a deep, rich brown. The other eye was inorganic, the iris a dazzling array of colours, fading in and out, like the eye itself was breathing. The rest of the world seemed to just fall away as she was drawn into those bright, experienced eyes
“Isobel?”Aurelia spoke softly, waving her hand in front of Isobel’s eyes. The android snapped back to reality, the sound of rain almost drawing out Aurelia’s voice.
“Uh y-yes,” Isobel stammered, before continuing. “It has a pleasant flavour. It’s sweet, but a little sour too. However, I do not know the name of this flavour.”
Aurelia smirked, letting out a chuckle. “Deep in thought? I thought perhaps there was a hang in your code.”
“Your eyes are beautiful, I got distracted. I apologise.” The android spoke, as if it were a matter of fact.
Aurelia froze, her cheeks going flush with red, before clearing her throat.
“Umm yes, well, good to see you are in working order. Yes. Sight is apparently working well too.” She grabbed her cane, and stood herself up, her face scrunching up as pain shot through her body.
“Let’s get you dressed. I have a bunch of old clothes you can have. We’ll get you newer clothes next time I need to place a supply order. Please follow me.” Aurelia motioned towards the doorway, and the pair made their way through the large facility to Aurelia's oddly cramped bedroom.
I’m going to lie down for a bit, you have free access to my closet, feel free to take whatever you want.” Aurelia collapsed onto her bed face first, completely motionless.
“Are you sure? I wouldn’t want to impose.” Isobel said meekly.
“Hmffuph fiph mmurff” Aurelia spoke directly into her bed covers.
“I can’t hear you properly.”
Aurelia begrudgingly rolled over on to her side, and stared up to the clouded sky. “I can just buy more. Seriously, please take whatever appeals to you. If it helps, think of this as a test for preferences, or free will or something. I’m sure you can think of whatever reason to justify it. I need sleep.”
Isobel nodded, opening the closet to reveal a room larger than the bedroom itself. The walls were lined with a variety of fashions, from formal suits and dresses, down to sweatpants and baggy shirts. She walked in slowly, feeling overwhelmed with the choices before her and walked up to the mirror.
She grabbed her hips, and pinched the soft silicone skin, a weird sensation making her jolt slightly.
Existence is overwhelming. How do humans manage it?
She moved herself away from the mirror, and began browsing through the myriad of colours and designs. She found a red singlet with the name “Knives in the Nation”, a punk band that Aurelia was apparently a fan of.
I don’t know much about my creator. Why didn’t she give me any knowledge of her?
Was it an accident? No, Aurelia seemed deceptively collected, despite the mess she kept in her workshop. Maybe she would ask a bit later, for now, she would dress.
Isobel replaced the band singlet and continued browsing, moving to the variety of formal wear. She pulled out a dress, and held it up to her body. She shook her head, and pulled out a formal dress shirt, and with a nod of approval, slid the shirt over her shoulders, and delicately buttoned it up.
Her mind was already filled with many concepts and ideas. She knew what many things were, a knowledge base likely set by her creator, but there were also gaps of things she would have thought were important. She didn’t really know where she was, she didn’t know how big the facility was, or what her true purpose was.
She must have created me for a reason, a purpose.
She found a matching pair of pants, finding some plain underwear and putting them both on. Feeling like she was missing something she dug through the dizzying array of accessories, pulling out a black bowtie, and suspenders. Finishing off her outfit, she put on some dress shoes, and stood herself back up.
She felt properly dressed, smiling at herself in the mirror. It felt perfect for her, but something was missing, she wanted to do something with her hair. She dug through the accessories until she found a hair tie, and fashioned her hair on the back into a bun. With a nod of approval, she left the closet. Isobel closed the door quietly behind her, and turned to see Aurelia laying on the bed spread out as far as the space would allow. Her foot was hanging off the edge, her lab coat only half on.
Isobel was overwhelmed by an odd sensation, mixing between wanting to squeeze the life out of her and also hold her very gently. She now came to understand the pet videos on the GalNet. She stood there for a while, unsure of what she should do. The room was plain, with only a single nightstand, and a picture in a frame. She crept carefully across the room, not wanting to wake up Aurelia. She gently picked up the frame, a group of people standing side by side, all dressed in military garb, massive metal objects attached to cloth ribbons around their necks..
They all had big smiles on their faces, but their eyes looked blank, filled with dread. Only one person wasn’t smiling, her creator. She was kneeling at the front along with a couple of other men and women. She almost didn’t recognise her, a bandage wrapped around her head, covering her left eye, her arm in a sling.
“You look good. I think you chose it perfectly.” Aurelia muttered groggily. Isobel yelped in surprise, almost dropping the frame.
Aurelia rolled on her side, glancing at the object the android was holding. Her brows furrowed. “My squad, from the last war I participated in… directly.”
Isobel took one last look at the picture, and placed it back on the nightstand. She stood there awkwardly, unsure on what she should say next. As if to read her mind, Aurelia spoke again.
“It’s not a fun story, I might talk about it later, but for now this bed is very soft, and I do not want to get up. If you want to sleep, then ju....” she trailed off back to sleep. Unsure on what to do with herself, she lay herself down on the cramped floorspace beside the bed, staring at the ceiling. She had been active for fifty two hours, but the further she persisted, the harder it became for her to think. It was an alien sensation
She closed her eyes, and the world fell away as tiredness took her.
So, this a story I've been sitting on for a few years, and decided to take another crack at it. I've been wanting to adjust the pacing as the first attempt it kind of got away from me quickly. I'm not sure when I'll post the next chapter, but regardless, I hope you enjoy.

Hello, I am wondering if anyone can recommend me a good textbook for learning Spanish. I have taken 5 years of Spanish in the American school system (1,2,3,4) and am currently taking AP Spanish. As of right now, I'm on track for a 2-3 on the exam. In the summer, I am going to Very rural Nicaragua for a trip to help people in need. I currently can read and write a bit, but need a lot of work. I often times have to manually conjugate my verbs and I have a very small vocabulary.
The textbooks we have used so far are: Triangulo aprobado and Una vez mas. If its grammar related I need to have an answer key to ensure I don't make errors. The trip will be in roughly 3 months! Any recommendations?

Reverb
2nd time training in half a year. I had a flare up from a prior injury and took it as an excuse to do nothing and feel sorry for myself. So now i'm fat, breathless, my gut pushing into my diaphragm when tying shoelaces, you know the deal. Trying to get back into it right? If you’ve grappled before you know what it asks of your heart and lungs. If you’ve ridden a bike before, your body remembers how. I have a gear I can crunch back into.
Average turnaround from beginner to lowest level black belt teacher is 6 years. I got 16 years tenure and am one level under that, if that gives you any context to my skill level. I think I’m self aware enough? I believe I know what I don’t know. Doesn't mean it's true, doesn't mean it's not? I have turned my mind towards the tension between technicians or artists, right brain, left brain, a lazy dichotomy based on black and white. What of the Judoka who is a technician AND artist? That's the dream anyway. But whatever. At the end of the day, whatever I might call myself, cannot lie that im waaaay behind schedule.
Had a conversation with this guy, Old Mate. I’ve trained with him for years in the past and am friendly with him. I helped him with his black belt grading, and he offered to help me with mine. He’s a redpiller, did his own research on the plandemic. Societies failures founded on industrial agriculture. You know the drill.
The black belt grading dance requires a partner, and it's a fair imposition to ask someone to do it with you, because there's a fair bit of rehearsal, pomp and pageantry. Don’t get me wrong. I can recognise that kata does actually work as a didactic tool, it's just not for me I guess. And really, if I actually want the damn belt, that's kinda beside the point. To progress, you need the ability to entertain an idea, even if you don’t accept it.
In the past I was his dance partner for his dan grading, because I wanted to dip my toe in the water, see the process without the pressure of being considered for my own grading. I'm tightly wound, what you might call a precious snowflake. But anyway. I danced for him. He was thankful for the opportunity that it provided him, and told me he wanted to return the favour.
This offer; its a chance for me to become the rank of teacher, given to me on a plate. I would be mad to refuse. I know how good I am, even if I am blowing smoke up my own arsehole. Especially if, I guess. But who knows. Maybe I'd actually learn something. A black belt would help others to make assumptions of my skills, and teacher status would open a lot of doors for me. Maybe if i did this, other people too, would blow smoke up my arsehole.
So, we meet up, and set tentative plans for what I need to do to get to that level, and how he can help me out. For the first time in ages, we brush off the cobwebs and go sparring on a weekend. I’m the heaviest and tallest in the class. Casual kinda place, mainly noobs. I’m the biggest fish in a small pond.
I like this class, and sought it out, because its sparring only, open sandpit testing. I’m here to jam. Pre starting warm up, stretching to get loosey goosey, whatever you gotta do to do what you gotta do. This place is comparatively dialled down on the military Japanese shit by Australian Judo standards. Me and him, we get to talking spec. The old boys glory days chestnut, you know that conversation that all crusty farts have.
I test my core. Stand on a yoga ball, throw a ten kilo weight in the air and catch it, and still can. Do it 10 times. So really, its all well and good if you can, but can you again? The skill is useless unless you can actually draw on it when you need it. I prove to myself I have the flow to do it at will. I still got it baby. My technique is poor, attack vocabulary is pretty much a drunken slur, grammar is all over the place. But in my experience, none of that shit really matters at the end of the day if you cant do it put your back into it. I got what I need.
So here's a bizarre and convoluted analogy, but indulge me. To me, Judo is music. What music actually is when you get down to it, is really loosely defined, and the deeper you get into it, the more ambiguous it gets. Yoko Ono, and Jimi Hendrix are both musicians. I'm not saying they're both good musicians, just that they are, and what they do, they do in their own respective styles.
But you need lines in the sand that separate styles from quality before you can even start to compare apples with apples. Music right? Lets turn this conversation to any musical style, maybe rock. There are so many substyles of rock, from punk rock, to black metal, to ska, each with their own influences and foundations. I would argue a commonality between all of them is an assumption of 5 instruments. Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals, bass, drums. With these you can make a lot of different styles, there are a lot of different technical skills that can shine through these instruments. But that's the minimum. No drums, not rock. No vocals, probably not? Definitely not punk rock anyway. There’s an assumption that there has to be the cooperation between a predetermined set of different tools to make good music as a rock band. You can always have more instruments of course. But not less, not unless you get creative. You could have buckethead, or satriani, hendrix, ect on the lead guitar, and accompanied with a shit drummer, they make a shit band. A band is only as strong as its weakest link.
But the truly great musicians are the ones that can carry this structure outside of these tools. People who can play rock tunes on kettle drums, orchestras, even plumbing taped together, performing in the street. You take any of these kind of musicians, and tell them to sing vocals, if they cant, they cant do rock by the 5 instrument definition, and therefore make shit rock musicians, if thats the lens youre looking through. When people start to twist the instruments theyre using for rock music, they need the ability to be able to recreate the spirit of rock, without using the same tools.
So, back to Judo. My technique is shit. My lungs are pretty shallow right now. I’m a stroke victim, I have minor paralysis issues in my right arm. I still dribble out of the right side of my face occasionally, but its way better than it was. We take the 5 piece band example, and my weakest links make me black and white, a shit Judoka. All this blustery talk, but I really am a tightly wound neurotic cunt.
But I have the best balance of anyone I know, I can catch a tennis ball behind my head, leaning backwards, while standing on a yoga ball. Still can, post brain injury. Can’t do it every time mind you, but i'm working on that. The challenge is to reframe my Judo to work to my strengths and around my limitations. recreate the spirit of Judo, without using the same tools.
Lines in the sand that separate style from quality. I suspect I will probably never be a Judoka. I got my own style. I am a Drunken Judoka. Anyway, enough rambling about all that.
So we start ground work, loose equivalent of BJJ rolling, starting from kneeling. Old mate, hes got a tighter grip of the fundamentals than me, but no soul, he’s reciting it without me, yet trying to apply it against me. I entertain his strength without resisting it too much, without yielding too much. Dancing with the rhythm, hearing the bass, the melody, letting the reverb rattle, vibing with it. Somewhere between tight and loose, free yet structured, strength and weakness. I try to follow a path between them, and fuck it up.
He gets behind my back and starts yanking my lapel across my throat like it owes him money. The fact that it got this far is clear evidence of a failure on my side, so I stop fucking around, sink my chin into it. Getting your chin cranked is pretty unpleasant, but gets you out of trouble, pulls the pressure away from your carotid artery. He tries to brute force it, fails, and gives up.
I twist back, recover my hips, plant his. He’s wasting energy trying to torque energy to turn me without understanding the futility of it, hipless attacks are generally useless. I let him haemorrhage oxygen, and once he gassed, passed his legs and held him down. Judo, if you can hold someone on the ground, both shoulders, back flat on the mat, I think its 25 seconds? If you can do that, you win. Most of my competition wins are like that. Whatever you wanna call it, osaekomiwaza is probably the dirtiest, least finesse win. Its also my skillset for ground stuff.
In sparring, its quite important that you recognise that you don't win, it’s not a situation where you ought to or can win. Just that you develop the ability to explore teaching opportunities, places where you can learn.
Anyway. I push both his elbows up with my knees, straightjacketing him with my thighs. I’ve seen a dude in a BJJ class I used to go to, he taught a double armbar from a position i think looks like this? Taught it to me, or at least tried to, years ago. I attempt to recreate it. If i could do this, it would be totally sick, would mean I would technically know how to break both elbows at the same time. Imagine that as a pub trick right? But this movement has waaaaaay more moving parts than just the BJJ fundamentals, and is well above my level. I give up, and ask him how he’d frame that sitch? So we disentangle, swap positions, and he promptly sits on my ribcage, which hurt for fucking days man. Goes for a more vanilla move, which ive seen, and have hit before, but isn't part of my conscious repertoire. I agree with him, a little bored. I’m not interested in what the answer is, i want what the answer could be. I wanna fly man.
Roll with a couple other people from the class, no one else is on my level. Honestly, it sounds like I think i’m King Cunt right? But i swear that thats not just me being high on the smell of my own shit, even though it sure fucking sounds like it hey… It’s just because no one here has trained longer than 3 years tops probably except for Old Mate. Meanwhile I have begged for training and been tolerated to attend some shit at arguably the best Judo dojo in the world, for a small stint anyway. Crusty old farts and the glory days right?
I'm not claiming tenure. It's just that no one else could present a situation to me I couldn't answer comfortably. One other younger guy nearly got me, and I was super impressed with him, but he assumed I was his height and reached for the overhand, because I had done it to him. He was much shorter than me. Judo is really contextual on height, and if you try and reach over a taller player you need to be significantly stronger than them or suicidal. He wasn’t either. Not talking shit on him, I’ve made the same mistake hundreds of times. Talked him through it.
I’m not a professional, I was just mad enough to try training with them once, a long time ago. Makes an Australian local club feel way less cool, but thats my own fault. I'm not seeking out players above my level, which is absolutely mandatory for growth. If you take nothing else from this, all I can say is, If you think you’re the best in your dojo, you’re in the wrong place. Go seek the opportunity to be the worst, it’s the only way to keep yourself honest. Or don’t. I mean, keep listening to my lies if you wanna?
But enough mastabatory navel gazing. We start standing sparring, tachiwaza. This is what you might actually call Judo. Closest player to me in stats is probably Old Mate, who is 15kg’s lighter than me and has reach disadvantages, a rank above me. We bow on and I slip into my game.
My attacks are pretty dirty and are lacking a lot of the basic fundamentals to work. But honestly, I don't feel I need them, at least not as much as you’d think. Old mate has a radiant strength about him, punching in. Strength like that, it sounds like a tuning fork if you listen to it. Once you've heard it, you can't hear anything else. His crashing sound announces the entry, makes stealth, counterplays, all of it, announced as if by trumpets. If he wants the art of judo to come out despite that, it will only happen clashing horribly. Echoes clacking around right? I can hear his intentions before he tries them, maybe even before he thinks them. Tells. And i mean im not doing any better trying my own shit, but I hear it all.
I try working the outside, tryna russian tie an ogoshi kinda movement, but can’t hit it. He’s holding me out, trying something maybe every 4 or so seconds. I’m giving him a whisker underneath the base minimum, which helps him think he has the advantage. No idea where his conditioning and strength is at, I know mine is in the gutter. But I know how to tax energy and oxygen. I can't rise to his level, I don't need to. I can bring him down to mine.
I have studied a bit of drunken boxing. To do it at all, at any level, like even “pop goes the weasel” blasted out on the recorder level, you have to have an unusually developed command over your base and balance. I got a dogshit command of Judo, but I got that. Since I’ve started staggering down that road, I interpret Judo defensive methodology like a drunk, and hear me out, theres actually a lot of advantages in it. If you learn how to hold yourself like a drunk, and can do it to the stage that you can defend yourself against people trying to throw you on your arse, it opens opportunities.
“I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it” I had a teacher maybe a decade ago who taught me weight, and how to park your arse on your grips. Force them to carry themselves and you. Send them to Jupiter, crank the gravity up. Took me years to understand what he was doing to me, before it clicked.
I know this, he doesn't. He's gassing. I'm not resisting, just drunken adjacent leaning on him, while reshuffling grips every couple of seconds. There are rules in Judo about passivity, and they assume it’s based on movement. You don't seek new grips within a couple seconds, you get penalised, shido’d. But grips are not an actual intent. Drunken boxing, I don't know much. But if you were to ask me, it’s all about frantic passivity. I am rushing my arse off doing nothing against him, and he’s questioning the answer, not the intent.
The art of Judo. The rhythm of him is dancing across me, and frankly, that's just not good enough. I struggle to do what I do, but when I can, the rhythm passes through me. Again, the ability to do something, and the ability to do it at will right? The skill is useless unless you can actually draw on it when you need it. Moving like a drunk, as opposed to being drunk in your soul. The rhythm, the bass, the reverb. I can hear it, but not to the level where I can belong to it. But I'm trying right? I'm trying. Settling for less, I let it merely wash across me and offer it the least I can while remaining standing.
So he is rotating, spending energy, and i'm ragdolling around, just as much as I can to be twisted around without actually losing my stance. He's trying to put me on my back and can't, he doesn't understand that i'm partially permitting it. He gasses. Starts pulling sacrificial techniques, Sutemi waza. When they start doing that you know you got them on the ropes. He starts dropping, the Judo equivalent of the BJJ “pulling guard” with the intention of sweeping.
Once you can throw a 10 kilo weight in the air and catch it while standing, on a yoga ball. Fuck that up a couple times and fall off, eat shit. Once you can fuck that up, fall, and catch yourself and land standing, youre basically cured of this kind of attack. And sure, I get thrown like this all the time. The key is, when they drop, you need to drop. Like everything. Your shoulders, your head, all the tension in every fucking muscle. Your ego, your fucking soul. You gotta relax like you're in surgery, like you're passed out drunk. It all works on leverage, and you can't leverage passed out drunk, boneless meat.
I let him try that a couple times. And don't get me wrong right? I'm trying my own shit, nothings sticking. But every time he fails, he gives me a small piece of his vitality. I'm trying my own shit and it costs me nothing. Weight attacks, they fucking tax hard. By the end of the round i've got the whites of his eyes. I haven't thrown him. He hasn't thrown me. Its a stalemate. But i'm ready to start, when he's spent.
He asks me if ive been to the gym, which ive answered that i have. Not real weights, nothing heavier than 10 kilos on the bar above my head. He asks my weight, and I answer him, 115 kg, 15 kg heavier than him. And he has his answer. Questions like this, they are kinda a veiled insult, if you want to interpret it that way I guess. Hello all, like many of you guys, I have found the current meta experience abysmal. In my mind, I kept drawing comparisons to how awful United in Stormwind felt, without knowing why, and I wasn't really sure if this was an actually valid critique or not, but I decided it was worth personally exploring.
I wanted to take a minute and revisit what content creators were saying at the time of United, to see if I was just misremembering or if those some critiques could be applied here. After reviewing the content, I can safely say that Whizbang's Workshop very well might be incredibly similar to United in Stormwind when you look at the overall complaints people were making at the time. The current meta doesn't have the flashiness of having a "Questline" getting completed, so its less in peoples face, but the overall complaints about the meta of Stormwind seem to coincide identically to what people are saying about this Whizbang meta, and I wanted to bring up what they were saying at the time because the key takeaways of those videos are still VERY applicable in modern Hearthstone, as you will see.
Exhibit A: Brian Kibler - United in Combo (referenced material starts at 2:18)
Key Takeaway: United in Stormwind meta feels incredibly poor due to BOTH a lack of interaction in playstyles (ie solitaire style game-play) AND an inability to stop your opponent from doing their gameplan through conventional hearthstone mechanics.
Abstract: Comparing the main takeaway point from the video, I think its fair to compare Zarimi Priest, Pain Warlock, Zilliax Rouge, and Nature Shaman to the decks he mentions in his video: Quest-Mage, Handbuff Paladin, and Quest DH. These decks share a common theme of "Oh, you don't have the perfect response on turn 5 to my win-con that is completely uninteractable for you? Try again next game." I think the majority of the decks right now play this way, even if its not by turn 5 like in the previous examples. The inevitability that you can't win late game against 5 Sunset Volleys from Reno Tendril Warrior once they play Brann, or that you can't win late game against a Wheel of Death + Fanotem + Reno once the cards come down feels awful. If every deck plays like "Did I enable my game-winnings cards first? Okay, I won." then the meta feels incredibly poor, and I think the Whizbang meta is like United in Stormwind in this way.
In a vacuum, the "Did I draw my game-winning cards first" philosophy isn't a bad attitude for card games to have, but in both expansions there were cards with no possibility for counterplay other than happening to queue with the class that stops the other players deck cold. Even then, its not a gurentee since you still have to stop them by turn 5-6, which means you had to draw your perfect cards.
Exhibit B: Rarran - The Sad Year (referenced material starts at 3:52)
Key Takeaway: Every single game felt incredibly consistent and uninteractive. Every deck killed you from hand, or by flooding the board with hyper efficient tools and minions to kill you by turn 4. Also, an insane amount of mana-cheating existed for lots of classes enabling insane draw and combo potential. Lastly, Homebrew decks disappeared. He goes on to talk about how much he hated Questlines and how the consistency of the cards was detrimental to the game as a whole.

Abstract: One of the major points Rarran focuses on instead of Kibler is the consistency factor of the games. If the game plays the same way everytime, then its not new or exciting, its boring and dull. In the past, this consistency is reflected in the Questlines always starting in your opening hand. In the current meta however, Questlines don't exist, but what we do have are some of the most efficient tutoring and drawing tools available. Characature Artist always draws your Brann or Odyn and prior to the nerfs, Instrument Tech always drawing the DH weapon made it nearly impossible to draw so poorly that you didn't just happen into the weapon on turn 3. Even if you are not tutoring a card, you still have the hyper draw necessary to find the perfect answers with cards like Quick-Pick, Elementium Geode, and Gold Panner. While we don't see absurd mana-cheating (unless you count Fanotem), the draw is just so incredibly strong that the consistency in my opinion is matching that of United.
TL'DR and Summary:
When you look back at Content Creator's messages from United in Stormwind and Year of the Grypoth, you see that people were complaining about the game being both uninteractive and too consistent to give meaningful gameplay experiences. To me, this is identical to the same rhetoric we saw with United in Stormwind, and I don't think its a stretch anymore to call the "Whizbang's Workshop" meta a "United in Stormwind" meta.

Hello all! Posting this to a couple subs to hopefully receive a variety of answers, and I couldn’t not ask here—I have a vocabulary question with a bit of background that gives some context to the word I’m looking for:
Me and some of my friends are graduating college this spring, all music majors. We are giving a group recital at the end of the year to celebrate our growth as musicians, students, and friends. A couple of us are moving away for grad school, and we’re all sad to not be in the same musical ensembles with each other, making this a bittersweet time for all of us.
A piece we are performing, “The I Love You Song” from Putnam County Spelling Bee, has a spoken line at the end where the character spells a rather poignant word relating to the plot and theme of the song: “Chimerical. C-H-I-M-E-R-I-C-A-L. Highly unrealistic. Wildly fantasized.”
I am looking for a word to replace “chimerical” that would give a slightly more positive end to the song—something having to do with friendship, graduation, love, moving-on, a new chapter, etc., but also a word that is fairly complex or obscure that one might hear in a spelling bee, or at least not immediately know the definition. (The key to the punchline is most audience members not knowing the definition of the word, so they have to wait for the definition to be read aloud.)
Has anyone ever done something similar with another song? Any and all suggestions appreciated!
