I was reflecting about the themes of the first two movies, and I wondered what the third one's theme could be.
If the first movie's theme was about "Anyone can wear the mask,
And the second film's theme was the question, "Can my individuality co-exist with the demands of the mask?"
The answer could be the theme of the third film, "Yes, and if the demands of the mask don't fit you, then make your own demands. I wear the mask. The mask doesn't wear me."
Here's how I feel like the ending of "Beyond" could be, with Rio and Jeff knowing his secret identity by now:
(Voice over)
"My name is Miles Morales, I was bitten by a radioactive spider. I am New York's one and only Spider-Man. I was once told that it meant letting those closest to me get hurt. However, I think the opposite is true. Spider-Man doesn't have to be a curse. It doesn't have to be a burden. If you need sleep, then sleep. (Show Miles having fallen asleep in his costume). "Let others take the weight off you." (Show Jeff as a cop running to his police car, showing that Spidey can take a night off). If you need a break. Take a break. (Show Miles and Gwen together). It's okay. The city won't fall apart. Spend time with those you love. (Show Rio, Jeff, Gwen, and Miles on the couch together). "You see, being Spider-Man means a lot to me." (Show him swinging through the city). "But so does being Miles Morales." (Show Miles reconnecting with the other neighborhood kids from the start of the first movie). You can do both. You CAN have your cake and eat it too. (Show Miles presenting Jeff with another cake saying, "I'm proud of you, Dad. I love you"). What good is being Spider-Man if you can't share it with the people you love? (Show Rio and Jeff watching Miles leap off the roof as Spider-Man, and they both yell, "Hey, be careful!!")
(Show Miles yelling faintly through the mask, "I always am!")
Rio and Jeff as they stare at Miles swinging into the sunset sky. Rio leans her head on Jeff.
Rio, "You think he'll be okay?"
Jeff- "Yeah. We did a good job raising him."
(As Miles swings into the city, he sees Spider-Gwen swinging with him).
They're shown swinging farther and farther away into the sun, as Miles narrates:
"I think the other Spider-people made the mistake of thinking they had to suffer. That it somehow made them into better heroes. But Peter didn't become Spider-Man because his Uncle Ben died. He became Spider-Man because of what his Uncle Ben taught him, and I didn't become Spider-Man because I watched Uncle Aaron die. I became Spider-Man because of what he taught me when he was alive. Just keep fighting. You're the best of all of us. Just keep going. And I always will.
Oh and Uncle Aaron, that girl I told you about?
It worked out."
(End of Beyond)
Something similar would be the ultimate mic drop.
I suppose I could include what happens to Hobie and the gang, but since I haven't actually seen Beyond, I really can only guestimate the following things:
1.) Jeff and Rio will find out Miles' secret identity.
2.) Miles and Gwen get together.
3.) Somehow Miles has made peace with his Earth-42 version prior to this.
4.) Miles adopted Gwen's mentality of "finding their own band."
5.) My theory is that Miguel will realize he was wrong about his calculations and eventually apologize to Miles. It'd take Miles a moment to forgive him, but he'd ultimately accept the apology--even if not becoming friends with the guy. Miles would say something like, "We're cool. Give you advice though? You need to get some help, man. Some serious help."
(That would be the end of their interaction)
6.) Not sure where Jessica Drew ends up. She's the biggest mystery to me.
7.) Miguel would get some kind of chastising from Rio. Not sure how, but Rio would go OFF on him. Especially if Miguel tracks Miles down, fights him, and his secret identity gets revealed by accident. In some way, Rio would cuss this dude out in Spanish, likely after Miles and Miguel make peace with each other.
8.) How Dark Miles and Spot get involved will be a mystery.
9.) Spot will die by getting stuck in some sort of eternal loop. He would basically keep falling into an infinite number of holes and not be able to stop it.
10.) Rio and Jeff accept Miles' secret identity. Jeff would be like, "So you're the one who gave me the advice ----whaaa?"
11.) Near the movie's end, Rio would make an offhand comment about having contacted Vision school administration to complain about the guidance counselor profiling their son. "Poor immigrant family."
These are my theories for how this movie will end. Thoughts? Additions?

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS NUMEROLOGY DECODE

Since we all know exactly who and what Spongebob is, I am going to do a Numerology decode.
When it comes to Numerology, there are many different things you can look into. I am going to look into the letters, patterns, and Numerology personality numbers.
SPONGEBOB has a personality #6. 6 is the number of compassion, work ethic, criticism, cleanliness, and productivity. In the funny show, we see that Spongebob is a workaholic. He has a 5 destiny number which shapes who you are overall. 5 is connected to youthfulness which explains the silliness of the Spongebob character. He is always laughing and doing things funny. The 5 energy indicates this. 5 also points to people, places, and things that are unique. He has an 8 soul urge which explains his undying ambition and creativity.
We can see that SPONGEBOB has 2 O's which has the numeric energy of 15 and numeric value of 6. 15 is the creative use of energy for productivity. Again, 6 is the number of routine, work ethic and productivity goes with this. This energy is not only his personality number, but also it is within his name. It's really in him.
SPONGEBOB HAS DOUBLE NUMERIC VALUES IN HIS NAME WHICH ARE, 7,6,5, AND 2. This explains why he is able to show his emotions and have moments of sensitivity(2). I book a excursion on a boat with drinks and snacks, I few minutes before midnight they sail out in to the harbor. The fireworks display was truly AMAZING, they were going off in sync 360 degrees all around the boat.

Dear Mighty One,
I see the Lord's eye upon us we discover by revelation the 'new thing' He is doing in our lives and of those of us who, beyond the present darkness, gaze into His eyes. The 'tuning fork' of Yahweh is orchestrating the sons and daughters of our living God in growing holy remnant unity to withstand as we stand with Him fearlessly in the boldness of the faith of God in this hour. Egypt is behind us, and the covenantal promises and prophetic words we have received (1 Tim. 1:18) empower us by His Holy Spirit to advance in warfare, humbly growing in the spirit of wisdom and revelation.

Yesterday as I encouraged some friends, I said, 'stay in the blissful extravagance of His presence.' Today I saw in Psalm 34 His eyes are upon us in vs. 8 & 9 and v:15 about the 'uncompromisingly righteous.' We are to be holy as He is holy. That leaves no room for any more compromise or seeking to please man or the traditions of men, being free of the fear of man, the religious spirit, and any demonic activity. We are seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus. Lord, help us understand by revelation to walk in all the authority we have been given by Jesus Christ.
Psalm 34:8-9 'O taste and see that the Lord [our God] is good! Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who trusts and takes refuge in Him. O fear the Lord, you His saints [revere and worship Him]! For there is no want to those who truly revere and worship Him with godly fear.'
v. 15 'The eyes of the Lord are toward the [uncompromisingly] righteous and His ears are open to their cry.'

Appreciate this not being shared elsewhere!
I am having a baby girl in August and things with my mother have gotten way out of hand.
To start, I want to take a year off of work. When I mentioned this to my mom because she brought up child care she said I shouldn’t because “my husband could leave me and I’d be stuck” we have been together ten years and I found this highly disrespectful as he has been nothing but loving and caring to not only myself but my family.
She criticized the name I chose for my daughter and refuses to say it correctly even though I have told her multiple times, it also isn’t a difficult name to say. She wanted me to name the baby after her and her mom and I didn’t so it led to this. She was pretty nasty when she found out the name.
When I decided my shower theme and sent invites she said that would be better as the nursery theme. I have decided the nursery and I am decorating it but she is trying to take over that too wanting to hang figurines on walls and such. Room will be very simple for safety with how I am setting it up.
I asked her to help with the shower because she wanted to be involved. Originally she wanted to plan it but she is out of state and that is not feasible, she will not help because I won’t let her bake appetizers and a cake for 50 people, we have a caterer and I don’t want baking taking place in my home that weekend, which is also where the shower is. I asked her to help order decorations and of course decorate when she got here but she didn’t even acknowledge that and will later on say I didn’t let her help.
When I called to tell her the date of the baby shower she went right into time off and coming as soon as the baby arrives. She was fully aware by this point of the two week rule for visitors and no one in the hospital, she acted like this was end of the world and accused me of letting others see the baby before her. My husband has paid leave so we want time to bond and I really don’t want out of state visitors for a little while.
She then calls and says she is now working from home and can stay in my home to help, she won’t help and I don’t want anyone in my home for extended periods of time. She will just critique my and mine husbands decisions with our daughter. My husband is worried she won’t let him take care of me and the baby which is ready to do and excited for.
I do not want her staying in my home at all at this point. She has made this entire pregnancy about her self and pushed me into being upset and anxious all the time. All information she has been given is because she pushed me into it and I finally gave in.
She ignored me for a week after the two week rule discussion. Sent pictures of things she bought for the babies room, she refuses to get anything actually helpful from the registry. I don’t think she has even looked at it.
When I called her for Mother’s Day she complained the whole time about some things with other family and dropped the news that she will be working from home and she can come stay. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to fight on Mother’s Day. She also barely said anything to me about Mother’s Day. It was just negative all around.
I really am I trying to let her be involved but if it’s not her way it’s the highway and I have absolutely had enough. The week she ignored me was actually decently peaceful because I didn’t have to listen to her critique or push what she wants on me.
Come August I know she is going to get worse and I am just terrified she will make birth and my postpartum journey horrible when I should be bonding with my daughter and husband.
Maybe a new phone number give her a taste of stone walling? I really don’t know and don’t want to deal with this anymore. I already restrict information but obviously that doesn’t work.

Hello! I just had a birthday, the kind that ends with a 0. I was at my partners place days in advance just to prepare everything. All I wanted was a cake that I made, us eating at least one slice each and be told "happy birthday". The day before my partner decided to bring me to their mothers place (it was Eurovision on tv, I get it, no worries) and we ended up staying the night. I woke up late, like 10 am, as we spent most of the night watching Netflix. I took a shower and washed my hair, so I was ready for the day at 11am. I got the "why did you have to shower today?" that happens when ever my partner has made plans and me doing anything else is a bother. I just said that I needed to shower as I didn't get to take one the day before (we did some trial runs with makeup). Then we headed out. Their mother told me where we where going, one of the malls, and once there we bought some proper makeup. For my partner. I got myself some candles for the cake and some fun candy with birthday themes. We finally got home to my partners place around 2pm, I needed lunch and told my partner to grab something too. My partner was fast asleep within 5 minutes. I made my lunch, cleaned up the kitchen, made my cake and cleaned the kitchen again. My partner woke up, was grumpy and made lunch. They ate lunch at the computer, watching youtube and chatting with friends on Discord. At 3.30 om I asked if we could sit in the kitchen and have cake. My partner opted for sleep again. At 6pm I found a box, put most of my cake in it, packed my stuff and left with most of the cake.
I could have met up with a friend. Or been alone at my place. Both of these options would have felt better. And I would not be sad and shut out by my partner.

I have a somewhat unique gift-idea request that I'd love some input on! Here's the background info:
One of the ways that I foster my compersion (positive feelings towards) my metamours (partners of my partners) is to loop in my special interest, which is perfumes. So when a partner starts dating someone who seems like they may become significant to my partner, I get excited about the potential of welcoming them and connecting a little bit by giving them some perfume samples that have notes they may like or that are aligned with their interests, or that could be cute in a polyamory-specific way. It's especially fun for me if the name of the perfume feels cute and clever in some way.
Examples: I made a mushroom-note themed set for my partner's girlfriend who ran foraging and educational expeditions (an easy one, idea-wise). I also was jazzed about the potential involved in another partner dating someone named Amber, because there are SO many cute amber related perfume names that would be adorable to give someone - Solstice Scents' Amber Coeur (Amber Heart), Alkemia's Amour De Ambre (Love of Amber). The relationship didn't end up working out, but sometimes these things are more about the idea and how it increases my feelings of excitement towards newer people.
I'm currently very excited about a person my partner is dating because it seems like there's the potential for us to be friends, and it also seems like things are heading towards being more serious between them. I have ideas for perfumes based on notes she may like, but I'd love a cute and clever perfume-name-based polyamory-centric perfume to potentially give her in the future, regardless of the notes.
My ideas so far:
Deconstructing Eden's My Girlfriend's Girlfriend (...this fragrance is the perfume that the girlfriend's girlfriend would wear. Soft, sweet and beguiling, a close to the skin, white musk forms the base. Heart notes of jasmine, soft rose, freesia, lily, and black currant. Top notes of pink grapefruit, bergamot, and mandarin orange.) Classic, obvious, the only clearly polyamorous perfume I've ever come across.
Sorcellerie's Your Girlfriend is a Badass (Yellow cake with a rich fudge frosting, Himalayan cedarwood, oakmoss, and forest floor.) I thought this would be cute to give to my partner to then give to her.

In case you haven't heard about it, there is something going around on the internet recently called Blockout 2024. It originated on tikok and its people coming together to block celebrities and influencers on social media. The catalyst for this movement was the met gala, more specifically a tiktok influencer who posted a video at the met gala. She posted a video dressed as Marie Antionette with the sound, "let them eat cake." People felt this was a complete slap in the face.
Now, the met gala's theme this year was based on a short story called The Garden of Time. You can read it here. A wealthy couple live in a beautiful estate. A group of people begin to charge for their estate, and so the couple start picking the time flowers in their garden of time. Every time a flower is picked, it turns back time which pushes the group back and gives them more time before they reach them. Eventually the time flowers run out, and the group enters and destroys the entire estate. Pretty specific, and pretty in line with what is now going on.
I truly, 100% believe that this "blockout" was orchestrated by the elites. Its too coincidental. The theme of the met gala predicting what was to come for the elites? No, it was always supposed to happen. People on social media think its a "gotcha" moment for us, when in reality its a "gotcha" moment for the elites. Because once again, it all went according to plan, and we all followed it perfectly. What do you think this means? I have some ideas. What do you all think?

I adore Ravenloft and all its theming and idea so much. My friend got me the 5E Ravenloft book and we played Strahd a few years ago. I’ve been itching to return to the domains and have been kicking the idea of running an anthology style game, with the same party bouncing between different domains and getting little samples of each one.
How would one run this though? Most of the domains seem fairly low level so I feel like past level 6 or so dark lords would become a cake walk.
I also don’t want my game to feel like “dark lord assassination simulator” but I thought the only way to escape a domain was to defeat the dark lord.

Do you want to go on an adventure? I am looking for four players for a new PbP game of the module 'Tyranny of Dragons'. I have been working on improving this module for literal years and can offer a story-rich immersive world where choices matter and adventurers become heroes. I have been a Dungeonmaster for over 6 years now, playing mostly life but venturing into PbP from time to time. Due to personal issues I had to give up my games about a year ago and want to pick it up again. The focus of my games is usually roleplay and exploration but of course with a theme like this there will be plenty fights to win (or loose).
I am looking for players from my own timezone (Central Europe) or players that are able to play during those hours. I hope for an average of at least one substantial in-charactenarration post per day with added speed during combat. But real life comes first and if we need to wait for someone to have a chance to tell a better story, we'll wait. Communication herein is key. That goes for my players but also for me.

Was just thinking this over. Personally I do love the animation, and the overall vibe of Firefly shifting to the enhanced state. Her looks and animations give me Gundam 00 vibes which I adore.
But I do understand the sentiment that people have that it is a bit, whelming. And I think that's mainly due to the fact that besides the enhanced attacks, there isn't much visually to it. The transformation is nice, but it doesn't quite hit the "this is SAM on overdrive!" feeling quite like the boss form did.
I get Mihoyo's conundrum here, where they want to keep the game relatively simple, and not feature creep it too much, and make it a mess of buttons. But I'll say when it comes to a mecha themed characters, it would be VERY flavorful to get as many buttons as is reasonable there. Mecha gamers know there can never be enough buttons, and bonus points if it comes with UI themed to look like Firefly's HUD.
So with that said, I thinking of ways to spice her up a bit and came up with a few options:

1) Having a secondary and more tradtional Ult while in enhanced state.

This would be the "have your cake and eat it option" and probably the most unlikely sadly. Since it would probably be overcooking. But it's still cool. Having her transform, do enhanced attacks, that then build up to an actual damage ult before she winds down to regular Sam would be amazing.
I was thinking the enhanced ult could maybe be an upgraded version of the boss Sam's ult. Instead of a rain of fire, she slams down like a green shooting star. Something else could be cool, but that was the first one that came to mind.
I think to balance it out, she would probably need a debuff upon exiting the enhanced state in that way. Making it a decision on the player's part to either use the ult and enter as "overheated" mode that leaves them more vulnerable. Or let the enhanced mode turn off by itself, letting you ramp back up to it without a debuff.
I'm sure there's other ways to balance having a 2nd ult. But I thought this direction was the most in-line with the "mecha" feel. Since that's a common trope.

2) Having multiple attack options while enhanced Destruction Trailblazer style.

Straightforward. Rather than just having enhanced attacks, they get multiple attack options similar to the Trailblazer's Destruction path upon enhancement.
Given Firefly's mecha theme, I think it would be cool if the basic and skill was the same as is. But then you have the option of picking more specialized options, that might be more situation. Things that can really emphasize "she's in humanoid shaped war machine" type of thing. Like, I don't know, a single target nuke attack where she attacks using firefly shaped Funnels (for those unfamiliar with Gundam, think automated attack drones). Or some other stuff besides just the swords.
It wouldn't quite have the visual spetacle of an enhanced Ult would. But it would make up for quality of animation, with quantity. And taking the most advantage of her inspirations.

3) Combination attacks (not gonna happen, but fun to think about)

This is just a throw away one, since it is SO unlikely it isn't even a real option. But I've just added it since, as a fanatic JRPG player, this is an approach some other games use.
Basically if they are making Firefly so dependent on certain teammates, having Combination attacks while in Enhanced mode could be a thing. I don't think this is a great idea, since even though I do like the idea of Firefly and the MC having duo attacks when paired together. But it opens up a bit gameplay can of worms that would probably be hell to deal with.
Anywho that's all I had for theory craft. Would love yo hear the Fireflymain's thoughts on this. Since this was kind of an "off the top of my head" sort of idea. And I didn't put too much thinking into the meta, just trying to push for more flavor and fun factor that some folks thought was missing.

food in anime is... weird
whenever it's on screen, a tremendous amount of focus in animation and detail is put into making it look as delicious and savory as possible, and in general if your anime doesn't make food look tasty enough to plaster on a restaurant menu, then the people will be disappointed and call it low effort. this obsession in the anime industry actually originates from this show named Yoake Mae yori Ruriiro na... erm... this one, which had such terrible looking cabbages they were ridiculed for it and ever since anime as an industry has vowed to never make food look that stupid ever again
and yet funnily enough, despite this seeming obsession with food, it is very rarely used to convey meaning in stories that aren't expressly about cooking. The closest many shows get to having meaning in their food is to use the always hungry anime character trope, where one such character, usually the protagonist, and especially if it's the protagonist of a Shonen battle series, will have a bottomless pit of a stomach and appetite, and loves eating to an almost obsessive degree.
I often view this as a representation of ambition. These characters dream big and always being hungry for more. Never being satisfied enough to not eat more is a great, if basic, representation of their personality. From my understanding in anime history, this particular trope was popularized by goku, and was as a result, present in many other series that started soon after dragonball exploded. 2 of the biggest and most famous examples of characters inheriting this trait are luffy from one piece and naruto from... wait i forgot the name of the show
Using these 2 examples, I think that one show naruto is from is a fair bit worse at incorporating meaning into its food than one piece, and I wanna talk about what the difference is.
in "that show", food is almost never really used to convey anything thematically or inform a character's personality. it feels like naruto only likes to eat a lot because he's the protagonist and that's what's expected of him. Why is choji pudgy? is it anything about his character? no, it's just because he eats choppers rumble balls as a super power and so the auther went "he swallows pills to get strong so he swallow everything else too."
one piece by contrast I feel does a lot more than either dragonball or naruto with food. luffy's cannonical ability to eat as much as he does is explained by his stomach being made of rubber and capable of expanding as he eats, and food directly works it's way into the power system for him, as many of luffy's gear techniques require huge amounts of energy and body fuel and leave him incredibly fatigued. on whole cake island he looks like this after just a single day of intensive combat with no snacking. And this is taking place on aan entire island made of cake and deserts you can eat, a place where it litterally rains syrup instead of water. This is an act of protest to sanji, as sanji is attempting to leave the crew and luffy told him to his face that he would starve to death on purpose unless his next meal was made by sanji. it's an important plot point and character moment for the 2 of them. sanji is a cook and a major part of his backstory involves him being stranded on the ocean with no food and starving for months, only being rescued within an inch of his life. This experience greatly informs his character, being willing to serve anybody who is hungry, even if its his enemy and it would be in his best intrests not to, like when he served don krieg and his pirates knowing full well as soon as they finished eating they would have the body stregnth to follow their plan and slaughter everybody at baratie and steal the ship, which is the major conflict of that arc. he puts several lives in danger, and condemned some to death because to him feeding somebody who is experiencing starvation is more important.
I jokingly called chojis pills the chopper rumble balls, but they really similar, even including massive side effects after eating 3 of them. however the meaning they have to the characters are quite different. choji just happened to be born in a family that uses them, and knows eating the third one means death (even though it really doesnt) and thats his only personal connection to the pill. by contrast, chopper invented his rumble balls himself using his medicinal knowledge as a doctor, and only discovered the third one is dangerous by accidentally eating 3, causing him to lose concious control of his body and turning him into a monster that attacks indescriminately. he's fearful of the third ball not because he'll die, but because he's afraid of what he'll become and afraid he'll hurt innocent bystanders, which is counter to his entire role and character as a doctor
this is not to shit on "whats that shows name", but to say that Food is clearly an important thing to oda, the author of one piece, as it plays a vital role in multiple staw hats personalities, and informs the decisions and situations the characters find themselves participating in, in a show that on the surface has nothing to do with food. it is a testimate to how you can use food to convey meaning and character in your world
but while food is meaningful and important in one piece, it's downright SACRED to golden kamuy. whereas one piece has food a comonplace staple and uses it to convey meaning once ever 20 episodes or so, or ocasionally throughout an entire food based arc like baratie or whole cake island, golden kamuy uses food to convey themes, messaging, character backstories and decisions, power dynamics, violence, connecting characters, foreshadowing major plot points, detecting lies, and more, and it does this on an episodic basis. there are SCARCELY few episodes of golden kamuy with no food or mentions and discussions of food. it is the very lifeblood of the show. it is such a big facet of the show that golden kamuy is often jokingly referred to by its community as a cooking show, and it puts more meaning and care into the food it's characters eat than many actual cooking anime.
food is the most universal languages in the entire world, and a fact of life is that everbody needs to eat. we may not see eye to eye, we may not eat the same thing, but we all eat. what we eat and why can tell us a lot about people, about our cultures and beliefs. islamic and jewish people don't eat pork, and hindu don't eat beef due to their religious beliefs. vegans care for animals and don't feel that they can personally participate in the consumption of living things. vegans that also try to make their dog or cats vegan are animal abusers who just do it to feel superior to others. what you eat can say a lot about where you're from. american cuisine looks far different than russian or scottish cuisine, which looks far different than african cuisine. ox penis is something ocasinally eaten in china, and pufferfish in japan. whale skin and blubber were eaten by the various inuit people, along with most every other part of the whale, due to availability. the land we live on can dictate what we eat in a very real way. most places with strong cultural beliefs against eating certain foods have a lot more variety in edible resources than other places. many hindu people refuse to eat beef or are straight vegetarians, and they mostly live in places where other types of food are easy to come by. by contrast, you would be hard pressed to find a vegetarian inuit, simply because that's not sustainable where they live, and their beliefs reflect that. cultures that historically had less food available to them are strongly abhorrent to letting any part of their food go to waste, and many indigenous people historically see using as much as humanly possible from the animals you hunt as a necessary part of honoring and thanking that animal, and not letting anything go to waste.
food is the most universal language, and it might just be the most meaningful one as well. offering someone food as a form of thanks is a lot more meaningful than just saying thanks for example. it's a way we connect to people, and is why most first dates are at restaurants. it's even a language that can transcend species. we train animals by offering food as rewards, and pets are often most attached to the person who feeds them. food is one of the most important aspects of who we are as people, and nobody writing fiction seems to understand this more satoru noda, the creator of golden kamuy... him and ryoko kui, the creator of dungeon meshi, but as much as I love that manga thats not what today's video is about.
I'll be focusing on the anime in this video, so meals that only happen in the manga or that happen after the current point the anime is at will not be talked about here. Truth be told, I don't really know where this script is going as I'm writing it, I just want to talk about many of the various ways that golden kamuy uses food, because I think it's something a lot of shows can learn from.
food is first brought up or used in golden kamuy as early as... oh would you look at that the very first line in the entire show! golden kamuy starts off in a flashack during the russo-japanese war on 208 meter hill. the very first interaction with any character in the series is sugimoto in the trenches eating an ant off his finger and commenting it tastes sour. he then comments that he would eat the russians he kills if thats what it took to survive. this establishes in only a few seconds that the living conditions in the trench are terrible, people are hungry, and that sugimoto is a survivalist, but didn't consider desertion, instead of you know... canibalism. this is all before the charge up the hill, before we learn he's a monster in close quarters and is nicknamed sugimoto the immortal. that's a LOT of information given in just a couple lines using an ant. we know sugimoto proably wasn't seroius about eating people, but are almost given the impression throughout the scene that if push came to shove he would do it. sugimoto is a person who does whatever it takes to survive. this is one of his most central character traits and is conveyed using food in a matter of seconds within the start of the show.
soon ashirpa is introduced, a young ainu hunter and joins sugimoto as they begin a quest to... uh... skin people for the purposes of making a treasure map... look golen kamuy is a weird show okay?
ashirpa and sugimoto are the 2 primary leads of the show, and neither of them are particularly familar with the cultures of the other, but they grow closer and bond over the course of the show and learn about each others lives and backgrounds. this is shown throughout the show by the meals they eat. when they kill a bear that was hunting them in episode 1, ashirpa comments that although the ainu to hunt and eat bears, she can't eat the bear they killed, as eating a wenkamuy: a bear that's eaten people before, is against her people's beliefs. so it's not until episode 2 that the pair share the first meals on their journey. they make chitatap, an ainu dish of raw meat that is meant to be made only using fresh kills, and ashirpa offers sugimoto the brains of the squirrel they hunted raw on a spoon as a snack for him to try. sugimoto is naturally at first repullsed by the idea, but after being preassured by ashirpa and not wanting to offend her he eats it, and reluctantly admits it's good. It's not clear in this scene whether he actually thinks it's good or if he's placating ashirpa, but it's definetely clear he still finds at least the concept of eating a brain gross. he also eats the chitatap and likes it, but believes it would taste even better by adding miso to it, and this time it's ashirpa who looks upon in disgust as she see's an unfamiliar japanese paste she insist's must be poop is willingly added to his portion of the meal. she even refuses to try it upon being presented with some, denying the same courtosey that sugimoto showed by eating brains just earlier. this is changed by their meal in meal a few episodes later when she tries miso at the insistence of both sugimoto and their new traveling companion shiraishi, and much like sugimoto admits it's good, even if it still visualy repulses her. from this point on, the characters share and mix both of their cultures into the food they eat and slowly become more used, accepting, and eventually enjoying each others cuisine, something shown with some hilarious screenshots. this mirrors of course their growing trust in each other. we don't need to be told that these 3 characters are closer when we can see it visually by sugimoto passionately sucking on a giant eyeball, or drunkenly babybirding shiraishi chewed dumpling, or ashirpa developing an obsessoin with miso and also wanting to try dried persimons because sutimotos favorite food and... fuck im getting emotional thinking about that scene again. I talked about it more extensively in my anti-war video on golden kamuy, so go watch that. but its so clear and disturbingly beautiful how much these characters have grown to care for each other by viewing their eating habits.
chitatap, the first meal they properly shared, becomes used repetedly throughout the show as a way to meet new people and intermingle characters, because it'a a dish meant to be prepared by everyone eating it together by taking turns chopping the meat, and we get to learn about every character by how they interact with the process of making chitatap, such as hijikata being cool with using his historial treasure of a katana, one of the few relics of his samurai days, to chop up raw meat because because a little kid thougt it would be cool and fun, or how ogata thinks he's too cool for school to chant chitatap while he cuts like everyone else, but the second time they make the meal he says it once just loud enough for ashirpa to hear.
meals have also been used to foreshadow events in golden kamuy, like when kioranke's betrayal is foreshadowed in this meal immitating the final supper. kioranke is in the seat and position judas in, and yes those are human corpses that have been turned into mannequins at the dinnertable, why do you ask?
on the topic of kiorankes betralal, after sugimoto is shot in the head and believed by ashirpa and half the characters to be dead, the fun joyous meals stop temporarily in the show. ashirpa is still eating and still enjoying hunting and trying new food, she's still ashirpa, but for the first couple of meals, the animals the capture reportedly don't taste good, such as this seal thing and musk deer. the only meal we were told as good was a snack made by someone else and eaten off screen. it's only after kioranke tells ashirpa that musk deer was her father's first kill and she finds a new purpose in the journey to learn more about her father and the karafuto indiginous that she begins to eat good food again.
food can be a tool in storytelling to display dynamics between characters. this is often in shown as a differentiating factor between the wealthy and poor, such as in the hunger games, but that's not the only dynamic that can be shown through this. to use lt tsurumi as an example, his second major scene where we learn about him as a character is a conversation with sugimoto after sugimoto has been captured by the 7th division. during this scene, sugimoto is handcuffed and sitting straight in his chair with 2 armed gurads while tsurumi casually questions him while eating dango on a stick, offering nothing for the captive to eat, representing a power dynamic showing which of them is in charge. tsurumi eats the dango throughout the scene, and the way he eats it is somehow offputting, and animated in such a way where you know there is something about him that just isn't right. I never thought eating dango could be intimidating, but here we are. I am terrified of this man. sugimoto does actually get to interact with the dango in this scene too, so we can contrasst it with how tsurumi did it to learn something... how did sugimoto get to interact with the dango again?
oh right, he gets STABBED THROUGH BOTH CHEECKS BY THE DANGO STICK by tsurumi as soon as he declines he gets caught in a lie. it's clear at this moment that the niceties and fun in games are over. tsurumi caught sugimoto in a lie about his identity, and the gloves are off.
food can also be used to show a sickness of the mind. ogata, who could be the topic of a whole nother video, has a hatred of monkfish stew. this is one of the only emotinal connections he has been shown to have food, and was born from his parents. ogata is the son of a high ranking military official and a geisha. ashamed of the mothers side of the family, the father forced them to leave and never make contact again while ogata was still a young child. over time, his mother lost her mind and began to only make monkfish stew to eat. it was his fathers favorite meal, and in her sickened mind she convinced herself that if she made it than one day the father would come back. she made it day after day after day. ogata picked up shooting and would kill ducks and birds to bring to his mother so he could eat something else and she would still only make monkfish stew. one day he put rat poison in the stew and killed his mother. ogata isn't right in the head either, he's a psychopath. he didn't kill his mother out of hatred of her food, but out of simple curiorsity to see if his father would care to show up at the funeral. he didn't.
monkfish stew here is used in golden kamuy as a representation of stagnation of the mind. denial that things will never go back to the way they were for the mother. it represents an insanity, doing the same thing over and over without change in hopes for a different outcome.

I, (29f), had a hard time sharing the things I liked with people. I grew up feeling looked over and wasn't sure anyone noticed if I was there. Family, friends, later coworkers... I just felt invisible. It's no surprise that I never really enjoyed my birthdays. They were all generic, just another day, nothing special. No one asked about my favorite color, or themes, or cake flavor, it was just a generic birthday for a generic person. Until a few years ago when I started working at a library.. I was a part timer and got close to my coworkers and it turned out we had a lot in common. We all enjoyed foreign films, shows, and music, and when I told them how much I liked a certain K-Pop boy band and Korean game show, I found that some of them were interested. Cut to my birthday. I walk into our office and see my favorite boy band and Korean game show all over the room. They had decorated my cubicle and picked out my favorite colors, and even purchased snacks that I liked. I had never felt more seen. It was by far the best birthday I ever had, and when I turn on my BTS lamp that my dear coworker gifted me, I remember just how special it feels when someone takes the time to get to know you.
