2024.06.09 11:48 Possible-Tomatillo80 Breaking into Finance as Physician - How to best capitalize on initial momentum?

I'm a recently graduated physician with a fair bit of lab research under his belt in Europe. Medicine is great and all, but healthcare is also a really attractive market to make money, and I would like to go down the finance path to make use of my understanding of the field in leveraging this opportunity. Come from a finance heavy family background, but don't want to make use of any connections in this transition, I want this to be on my own merit.
I am currently in an internship sprint looking to give my CV a clear direction and indication that I understand what I am getting myself into - internships are Private Equity Fund, InvestoStrategic Healthcare Consulting (Mainly consulting PE firms on deals in the healthcare space) and public equity research at a small fund focusing on healthcare/biotech. I also do some part time work for a VC fund. Of course I'm pretty biased, but my track-record so far has been excellent with some pretty cool achievements to include in my resume.
Long term I would like to go into a buy-side role, preferably with a Private Equity fund in their Healthcare team. Given that I am currently in the middle of completing my internships, how might you best go about capitalizing on this initial momentum to go the next step and find a permanent role for afterwards? Would an MBA or even a CFA possibly make sense?
Really appreciate any pointers :) Specifically, I am wondering whether I should start applying to full-time positions while still in my current internship cycle? Where might I best go about applying (I am open to relocating worldwide)? How realistic is it for me to achieve the transition over to finance?

2024.06.09 11:41 clarahugszombies Skidmore, Missouri - The Town That Got Away With Murder

Skidmore, Missouri - The Town That Got Away With Murder
In the small town of Skidmore, Missouri, Ken Rex McElroy was known as "The Bully" who terrorized the town for decades. He was a notorious local figure whose death became a significant event in American criminal history, particularly in the area of vigilante justice.
𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐜𝐄𝐥𝐫𝐨𝐲?
Born on June 1, 1934, Ken Rex McElroy was a resident of Skidmore, Missouri, and he was known for his intimidating and violent behavior. To the residents of the tight-knit town, he was the local bully.
It wasn’t a secret that McElroy was disliked in his community. Throughout his life, McElroy had been accused of dozens of crimes, including but not limited to assault, child molestation, statutory rape, arson, burglary, and animal cruelty.
After dropping out of school in the eighth grade, it didn’t take long for Ken McElroy to fall into a life of delinquency. What started with hunting raccoons escalated into petty crime until McElroy ultimately emerged as a full-fledged criminal.
𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐜𝐄𝐥𝐫𝐨𝐲 (𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐟𝐞)
McElroy raped Trena (age 12 at the time) but managed to avoid statutory rape charges by divorcing his second wife and marrying the young girl when she was 14 and pregnant with his child. To get the girl’s parents to agree to the marriage, McElroy set their house on fire and shot their dog.
Their relationship was marked by abuse and control, reflective of McElroy's domineering and violent personality.
Despite the hardship, Trena stood by him, even after he was accused of numerous crimes and beyond his death in 1981. Following McElroy's murder, Trena initially sought justice for his killing, but she eventually remarried and moved on with her life.
Trena McElroy passed away in 2012, at the age of 55, reportedly due to cancer.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐨 𝐊𝐞𝐧 + 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐩 𝐓𝐨 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡
in July 1976, McElroy shot a farmer by the name of Romaine Henry in the stomach with a shotgun. Thankfully, Henry survived, and McElroy was charged with assault with intent to kill. Yet again, however, McElroy avoided any consequences. In this instance, his attorney produced two witnesses who claimed they were out hunting with McElroy that day, and that they were nowhere near the scene of the shooting.
Somehow, McElroy was found not guilty. But yet again, McElroy was involved in another shooting in 1980. This time, he shot the 70-year-old town grocer, Ernest “Bo” Bowenkamp, in the neck — over an argument about whether McElroy’s child had stolen a piece of candy. The grocer lived in this case, too, and McElroy was eventually convicted of assault.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐟 𝐊𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐜𝐄𝐥𝐫𝐨𝐲
While nearly everyone in the town of Skidmore absolutely despised Ken McElroy, there was one particular person who had only good things to say about him: his attorney, Richard McFadin, who routinely defended Ken McElroy in three or four felonies a year.
“Best client I ever had,” McFadin said in an interview. He was punctual, always said he didn’t do it, paid in cash and kept coming back… I was the only friend he had. He told me he would pay me whatever I needed to keep him out of jail.”
McElroy’s run in with Bowenkamp was the last straw for the townspeople. For more than two decades, McElroy had been a plague on the town of Skidmore, and somehow, he just kept getting away with it.
So the townspeople began planning their next move. On July 10, 1981, they gathered together and the group walked down to the restaurant where McElroy was having a morning drink with his wife. Again, keep in mind that this was the same wife he victimized when she was a child. Afterward. he decided to head back to his truck. The mob followed. Outside, they surrounded his pickup truck and confronted him — then, several shots rang out.
In the large crowd, it was nearly impossible to say who had shot McElroy. He was struck by two different firearms and bled out behind the wheel of his truck. No one at the scene called an ambulance.
The case remains officially unsolved to this day, although it is widely believed that the community acted collectively to end McElroy's reign of terror.

2024.06.09 11:39 DankKid2410 Wanted an internship, but got a job offer. What to do?

I am about to start my internship/job with this small startup; barely 15 people, but most have extensive industry experience of more than 20 years, and so now they have started their own company. They don't have any application. I reached out to them, and they liked my work. It was my fault that I never wrote in my email that I explicitly wanted an internship. I just said I wanted to work on some specific stuff I like and added my experience on what I want to contribute. The startup founder liked it and had a conversation with me. During the call, I realized we had great chemistry, and the industry they are tackling, and the solutions they are developing are exceptionally excellent. The founder offered me a job at the end of it, and I was so happy that I didn't tell the founder that I was still a university student and had a lot of time before graduation, so doing a job wouldn't be possible. I now have to respond to him, but I don't want to sound like I just wanted to do an internship and used the company fa or mere resume. How do I politely convey my message because the call version of me was very enthusiastic?

2024.06.09 10:53 Normodox High Court orders government to respond to petition against so-called Al Jazeera law

The High Court of Justice orders the government to respond to a petition demanding the annulment of a temporary law that allows the government to shutter foreign news outlets, on the basis that the law harms freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
The court instructs the government to file its response by August 5, or alternatively to inform the court that it will not be extending the law’s duration when it expires on July 31.
The petition claims that the temporary law, passed in April in order to shut down the Al Jazeera news network in Israel, is unconstitutional due to alleged harm it does to the separation of powers, the rule of law, and the independence of the judicial authority.
The court says it is issuing the order “without taking a position, and given that we are talking about a law of an unprecedented nature for which it is fitting that it be reviewed by an expanded panel [of justices]” and that the government must explain why the law should not be annulled.
Such orders flip the burden of proof from the petitioners to the respondents, indicating that the court has concerns over the constitutionality of the law.
After the law was passed in April, Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi with approval of the government ordered that Al Jazeera be shuttered for a 45-day period on May 5. The channel’s broadcasts were taken off air, its website blocked in Israel, and its equipment seized.
The Tel-Aviv Jaffa District Court approved Karhi’s order last week but reduced its duration to 35 days, meaning that the ban has now expired.
Al Jazeera has said it will resume broadcasts from Israel tomorrow, unless the government renews the ban today.

2024.06.09 10:44 BalanceMobile2025 Should I continue with my Unpaid internship?(My Boss is Toxic)

Hey everyone, This Is kinda my first post and English is not my first language so please ignore small mistakes.
So basically, I am a first year CS student who started applying for internships from this February. I applied for 250+ internships but got 0 interviews and few online coding assignments. I knew the market was tough as there are a lot of CS graduates out there. I somehow got an interview at a very small startup (they are literally building everything from scratch). I passed the interview and got an offer but turned out, it was an unpaid position. Since it was remote, and the title was AI/ML Intern on the offer letter, I accepted the offer as I thought this will be a good learning experience and will give a slight boost to my resume.
Now, to be very honest, since I am a first year student, I don’t know a lot of coding. Just some basics as I still haven’t been taught Data structure and Algorithms and the recruiters knew about these. Therefore, I thought an unpaid internship was kinda worth it seeing I don’t know anything. However, when I joined the team, I found that this startup has hired like 50 unpaid interns while it has only like 60 employees in total meaning only 10 people who are actually getting something. This startup is using unpaid interns to do free labour for them and building the entire front and back-end. I was shocked, however I was actually disappointed when on my first day, the co-founder asked all the intern to directly work on stuff like Cloud Dapp deployment, AI- Integration, etc. without any training. Everyone says you should ask lots of questions during your internship, but when I asked my boss a question, he said “maybe this internship is not for you as looks like you need a lots of help”.
We weren’t assigned a tech lead or anything, just a bunch of interns working together. You just have to Google or ChatGPT your way around every problem but I still most of the times can’t find anything. However now most of the interns just receive bullshit work like filling some Google forms with data or something instead of working on a LLM. They are still hiring more and more unpaid interns everyday but not training anyone.
What should I do in this situation? Should I stick around a little while or instead just quiet and learn some stuff from Coursera or Udemy this summer break? My title is still an AI/ML intern but Idk if I will actually do some programming stuff or not.
Thanks for reading through this long post and all opinions are welcomed. Please be as harsh as you need to be and be honest.

2024.06.09 09:15 crunchspengler Update After 3 Months

Today marks exactly 1/4 of a year since my (21Fg mom (51F) died, and the last time I posted on this subreddit. Since then, a lot of major changes have happened in my life and this is mainly just a place to vent.
To start off, there has been a lot of good. I haven’t been drowning in grief, and mainly find myself getting my grief out by listening to and singing depressing songs. I just recently started watching movies and shows again, and have spent a lot of time reading court opinions (I’m a pre-law student). I finished my classes this semester with high marks, and I went to see the Supreme Court oral argument (a life-long dream of mine) during spring break. That trip was the day after my mom’s funeral, and I found a home in the friends and connections I made there - I’m transferring to a school in the DC area and moving to Northern VA (I’m from NY) in about a month and a half. I found a lot of joy in watching the new Fallout, and have a closer relationship with most of my family members.
However, there are still things that get to me. It gets to me knowing that there is no one to fend for me and that I have no choice but to do it all on my own now. It gets to me that, because everything was so quick (my mom died 45 days after her cancer diagnosis), just a year ago my life was vastly different and she was so full of life and energy. There are certain things that remind me of her and just upset me greatly (ex. She loved the Barbie movie). Her birthday would have been June 1st, and it was hard on the whole family. It was hard when I was living on campus seeing all of the other kids go home with their parents, knowing that wouldn’t happen for me as an orphan. Truly, there are certain traumas I haven’t even assessed about that day. I haven’t washed the jacket I wore the last time she hugged me, I haven’t reported her dead to Facebook, I was the first person in the hospital room to hear the death rattle and the first person to acknowledge it out loud as what it was. When they were changing her bed, before they rushed us all back in, I was reading an article about Austin Butler and how he grieved with losing a mother at 22 and then it happened to me moments later. Everything happened so quickly, and sometimes it feels like a bad dream. Sometimes I feel like my old self, but changed. I feel older than all of my peers, even the ones who are older than me.
My own choices upset me sometimes, too. It’s silly to compare it to this, but at the end of the Young Sheldon series when he refused to look at his dead father or give a speech at the funeral - I did the same thing, just shut it out and refused to do anything. I couldn’t see my mom like that, and it was too hard to give a speech even though I wrote probably four eulogies.
There have been good things that make me feel like she was watching over me. Kyle MacLachlan has been my favorite actor for a long time, miraculously, I get to meet him at NYCC this year. I got to come into close contact with some of the Supreme Court Justices and network with people who can help get me internships or jobs. I’ve made some good friends and renewed my passion for law. To be clear, my life isn’t miserable, but there are moments where the grief is stronger than others and it seems to come at random moments. The other day Apple recommended to me a particularly emotionally triggering news article that basically talked about how there have been a spike in rare cancers in people who have had Covid - the first one they talked about was what my mom had, she worked at a hospital and had Covid twice; one time she got it from me.
IDK, just wanted to get that out of my system.

2024.06.09 07:20 Aid4n-lol Career uncertainty

I’m going to preface this by saying i am prelaw, not a law student, but this may resonate more with you guys.
I recently started an internship at a public defenders office, and I fucking love criminal defense. I am extremely passionate about defending people’s rights, and the subject matter is incredibly interesting. It’s juicy, fun, and just exhilarating. That said my plan has always been to go into biglaw for at least few years, and build the life I’ve always wanted (finance wise at least). Given how corporate law pays considerably more than criminal, and how expensive law school is (passion doesn’t pay the bills), I’m in a bit of a dilemma. I don’t have some trust fund waiting for me, and dream of being one day even minorly wealthy. Do any of you also experience this dilemma?

2024.06.09 07:18 Ok-Mirror-4196 Job Success!

Job Success!
Gonna try and keep this short.
So two years ago I needed a job and scripted what I wanted:
https://preview.redd.it/560xvaz49h5d1.jpg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e262a3df40e75ae19d8a9ac4588d7e68be474948
I was in school at the time which is why my list is like that. An update on my list from 2 years ago, I did not get the receptionist job I wanted.
Fast forward to today, I needed an internship this year no matter what. Let’s just say my circumstances were very very unfavourable.
Firstly: I started applying for summer internships when most summer internships have already started. The only companies still posting summer internships last minute aren’t really the roles/companies you want to be working in.
Secondly: there are THOUSANDS of students applying for the same internships.
Thirdly: I am almost done college and I had ever had an internship ever and in my field, if you can’t land an internship during college, forget about getting your foot in the door after college (but I know that’s not true because of Neville).
I also had a condition that I must only get a job through indeed since I hate using LinkedIn and especially company websites to apply. Indeed is just so simple. But, the thing with Indeed is that most coveted/decent companies don't post their jobs on Indeed but I just love the simplicity of Indeed so getting a good internship from Indeed was a condition for me.
I applied on Indeed to the lamest internships roles I thought I’d have even a small chance at. I then saw this job posting for a job title I’d never heard of. I felt drawn to that position so I changed up my resume to match that job and forgot about it.
It was a week of applying for jobs at this point and no one called me back. For the next few days I locked myself in my room and heavily meditated. I said to myself “I won’t stop meditating till I get what I want” and would repeat the affirmations “I have everything I always wanted”, “I have my dream internship this summer”, etc. I had a OBE and I started to see a so many colourful orbs, etc after a few hours of intense meditation. My spiritual journey is a whole other topic but to keep it simple, I saw a white orb which kept getting bigger and deep inside I knew it meant that what I wanted is on the way. The next day I got a call from the company who made a posting for the job title I never heard of.
The job interview was so seamless. Me and the manager were speaking like besties (go back to the list I made two years ago). My third eye was tingling the whole time during the interview and I would literally say the most detailed specific things and my manager would somehow relate to it or have her own personal story about the things I said and we connected on those topics (those were rare topics, believe me).
Now I work there. I get paid $25/hour, the job is so so flexible, my manager knows I will be working for the summer only as it is a summer internship, my co-workers are all such higher-ups (VPs, managers, directors) and they all LOVE me (and I love them too). Everyone gets along and I am truly happy at my job. And the company is also super well known which is surprising. The role I'm doing has me practically set in my career for good and is a billion times better than I could've imagined. I was applying to lame roles until this random role came about and little did I know that this role would be so so good in terms of prestige, daily job functions, etc.
From the human perspective, this internship was impossible for me to land but from the Neville/God perspective, this is nothing.
And by the way, the picture of my list that I uploaded, I completely forgot about that. I was just going though my notes app and I found that list. Then I was like… wait a minute… gotta post this on this subreddit!

2024.06.09 06:44 kaiiito11 Does where you go for undergrad matter? Yes and No (but mostly No)

After a decade removed from college and being in the workforce, working in a few different industries and meeting people from all walks of life, I wanted to share here my take on the age old question of "does where I go to undergrad matter?" I was once like many of you in this subreddit, obsessing over getting good grades, good extracurriculars, and doing my best to get into the best college I could, thinking it would "impact my entire future." The truth is, where you go to college does not matter as much as we are led to believe, but there is also an overcorrection now of "it makes absolutely 0 impact on your career outcomes." The answer is more nuanced:
For Investment Banking and Consulting, where you go to college absolutely can drastically impact your chances of getting hired, as well as getting hired by a prestigious firm. Due to how crazy competitive it is to get into investment banking and consulting due to the high salaries, and due to those industries being a bit more elitist than others, prestige does matter for these fields.
Common target schools are top 15ish schools (the ivy league, Stanford, Duke, UChicago etc). Students regardless of major will often find their way into elite boutiques and big banks (assuming they have good GPAs and/or are well connected).
Next in the tier of target schools are specific elite business programs where, while the school may not be overall ranked top 15 or so, their business schools are well regarded and students will be frequently hired into investment banks or top consulting firms. These are NYU, Notre Dame, Georgetown, UT-Austin, to name a few.
Then, the rest of the top 35 or so ranked schools are what are often called "semi-targets." Meaning investment banks and top consulting firms will stop by and will recruit from these schools, but at less high percentages and won't take "any majors" but rather focus on business/finance majors specifically. These are places like Michigan, UVA, Northwestern, Emory, WashU, Rice, etc etc.
However, keep in mind that most people are not cut out for the investment banking/consulting lifestyle. You may make a lot but you will be worked like a dog, be surrounded by elitist and toxic coworkers (drug use is very real just as depicted in movies), and it's a very high stress and high turnover job. Even at "target schools" Harvard is only sending about a few hundred max of their entire student body to investment banking per graduating class.
Now another field where going to a good college will help: Pre-med
In this case unlike investment banking it is not so much because med schools go "oh I think candidates from X Y Z bougie schools are smarter." It is more so because certain top schools, particularly those with strong medical school and research environments, give their premeds substantial opportunities and resources to build a strong premed resume.
Some of these include: Johns Hopkins, Penn, Harvard, Duke, WashU, Columbia.
All of those good universities (not an exhaustive list btw) have world-class med schools and many famous hospitals easily commutable from the school. It is easy for students to get research and shadowing opportunities at their school's med schools and this can really set them apart from other applicants at other schools who may not have access to such impressive resources. This is of course, assuming that they also do well on the MCAT (as those who are able to be admitted to these schools often are more likely to score higher).
Other than these fields though, where you go to college for undergrad really doesn't mean that much. Let's list a few examples:
Pre-Law: Unlike med school, law school is less focused on factors in your application besides your grades and your LSAT. If you do well on the LSAT you will get into a good law school, including top 13 ranked ones. If you are set on law school I recommend going to a local state school to save money and just make sure you ace the LSAT as where you go to law school will substantially affect your entire career, while where you went to college literally will mean squat.
Engineering/CS: Ok sure, I guess if you go to a very good program like MIT, Carnegie Mellon, or UIUC, it will probably help get your foot in the door more (assuming you also have good internship experience and decent grades). But otherwise, even if going to say Drexel means you may get a slightly less good starting job than someone at MIT, engineering and CS is not like IB or med school where getting your foot in the door in the first place is almost statistically impossible. Once you start working if you do a good job and/or work the social game well you can work your way up or switch to better and better jobs. Once you demonstrate you are a great engineer no one will ever care after your first job where you got your degree. You could be self-taught for all they care (esp in CS) and if you know your stuff employers will be fighting over you.
Any academic grad school: Same thing I said for law school. Do well during your undergrad with a good GPA, good relationships with profs for good rec letters, write a good thesis, and get a good GRE score. Where you went to undergrad will matter almost 0% if you have all of that. I know people who went to a local state school for undergrad and are now getting their PhDs at UChicago, Princeton, Stanford, all sorts of fancy places! Just like in law, where you get your grad degree in academia can make a significant difference on your career so I would also recommend going to a college that's cheaper (and less stressful!) over an elite college for undergrad if you know you want to go the academia route.
So yeah! Are there instances where going to a so-called "elite college" may make a difference? Yes there are. It is an overcorrection nowadays to say it never matters at all where you go to college. For certain fields and certain life goals going to Yale will certainly help tremendously. But for 95% of people (maybe 99%?) it does not matter. Pretty much unless you want to be a wall street suit, or you are dead set on med school (and even in the case of med school you can still get in without going to an elite school, it will just be a little harder) going to an elite college for undergrad is otherwise just a very expensive bragging right. A bragging right too that 99% of people won't care about once you graduate and if you bring it up it'll just make you look like a snobby douchebag.

2024.06.09 05:28 GirlWithABlueBalloon Wall Street Prep CFPAM Course- Worth It?

Hi! I’m a rising college senior interested in pursuing a career in finance after graduation. Through my internship this summer, I have full access to the Wall Street prep library. I’m thinking about doing the CFPAM certification but am wondering how it would be viewed by the industry. Is this something I could put on my resume? And how is the CFPAM certification different from the CFP certification? Thank you!

2024.06.09 05:23 Competitive-Cut3807 Attorney scrutinized after murder witness receives death threat

Prosecutors said someone unlawfully disclosed the name of at least one witness in a murder case that's scheduled to begin Tuesday in Albany.
ALBANY — Jasper Mills, a longtime criminal defense attorney in Albany, was warned by a judge Friday that he could be subject to a criminal contempt charge if he disclosed — even inadvertently — the identity of at least one witness in a pending murder case who received death threats after the confidential document identifying him was shared with the defendants and others.
The case, which is set for trial next week, involves four men who are charged with murder in the January 2021 shooting of Shanita Thomas, who was pregnant with her third child when she was gunned down at a Central Avenue party. Four others were wounded in the shooting.
Mills, a candidate for Albany County Family Court judge, represents 35-year-old Vramir Branch, who with three other defendants is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, weapons possession and evidence tampering in connection with Thomas' death.
At a hearing Friday in Albany County Court, Judge Andra Ackerman heard arguments from prosecutors on their motion for an order to have the court review boxes of documents that were seized from at least three of the defendants' jail cells at Albany County Jail this week. Prosecutors filed the motion after a witness in the case, who is in federal prison, learned that he had become the target of a death threat and was placed in protective custody.
Prosecutors are asking the court to review the materials to see if there are documents among those found in the cells that were subject to a protective order, and should not have been provided to the men.
As the hearing began, Mills stepped forward and appeared to take responsibility for what he described to the judge as an inadvertent disclosure of the witness information. He said that he had been discussing the witness with another client on Tuesday, a day after he received the information from prosecutors, and then placed the document on a conference table in his office as he juggled a meeting with three other clients who were in his office that day.
“Just so I can be clear here: Did you have documents that were subject to the protective order out on display when you had other individuals that have charges that you’re dealing with and speaking with others on that case … ?,” Ackerman asked Mills. “Who else was in that conference room? Who else had access to that document?”
Mills confirmed that he showed another client — who is not involved in the case — a copy of the document and asked that person what they knew about the witness in the murder case.
“There was a lot going on,” Mills told the judge. “I showed the individual the document. There was nothing in the protective order that said you can’t show it, it just said that you can’t distribute or disseminate it.”
Mills said the next day — Wednesday — an ex-girlfriend of his client in the murder case texted him an image of the document and asked him about the witness listed in the record, and whether that person had given a statement.
But that image, according to prosecutors, is different than another image of the document that was being distributed on social media websites this week.
Assistant District Attorney Jessica Blain-Lewis, one of the prosecutors in the case, told the judge that meant that someone had apparently distributed a second image of the document — and that it was not the image in the photograph that Mills claimed had been taken in his office.
As Mills confirmed to the judge that the image of the document the woman had texted to him had markings on it that he had made, she interrupted him and asked, “(Do) you think it is advisable for you to receive counsel before you continue talking? Because it appears to me that it’s going in a direction, and whether it’s negligence or whatever, but this could be … a severe violation of the protective order which could subject you to a criminal contempt (charge).”
Mills responded that he “didn’t disseminate or give anyone anything.”
“Don’t you think you have an obligation, pursuant to the protective order, to protect those documents?" the judge said. "And you’re telling me that you’re leaving them lying on a conference table in the open and going to another office for about an hour, meeting with other clients, that there won’t be an issue here?”
As Mills began to respond, he was interrupted by Daniel Smalls, another defense attorney in the case, who whispered in Mills' ear for about 20 seconds.
Mills then asked to approach the bench, and moments later he said in open court that he would not say anything more until consulting with an attorney.
As the hearing unfolded, the four defendants — Branch as well as Raa’jiem Coleman, Terrence Anthony and Marcelle Perry — looked on and said nothing. They were clad in jail clothing, and at least one of them had a few supporters in the courtroom.
Blain-Lewis, one of the prosecutors, then asked the judge if she could clarify some of the admissions that had just been made by Mills.
She noted that a thumb was visible in the image of the document that Mills said was photographed, apparently without his knowledge, while it was on a table in his office. But Blain-Lewis said the photo of the document that has been disseminated on social media sites “is not the same photo,” although the markings on the document that were made by Mills are the same.
The document, known as a “witness disclosure,” is often turned over by prosecutors to defense attorneys shortly before a trial begins. They generally list the names of witnesses and summarize their testimony. In this case, that document was subject to a protective order, which meant Mills could discuss it with his client beginning one week prior to the trial that is scheduled to begin Tuesday.
Prosecutors in Albany routinely seek protective orders in cases involving murders, gangs and gun violence. Through the years, the district attorney's office has said that incidents of witness intimidation and death threats have caused many individuals to decline to testify in cases like this one.
The protective order prohibited Mills or any of the other defense attorneys from sharing a copy of the witness disclosure document with anyone, including their clients. Blain-Lewis said it also prohibited them from discussing the contents of that document with anyone but their client, although Mills admitted during Friday’s hearing that he had talked to someone else about one of the witnesses.
“What that means, your honor, is that someone has an actual copy of this document,” Blain-Lewis told the judge as she explained that there are two images of it. “I do believe that this court understands the length at which defendants will go to stop people from testifying, and in this case we had a legitimate, real death threat, and the effect that this is going to have not only on that witness but (the) trial itself concerns … my entire office.”
The case is assigned to acting state Supreme Court Justice Roger D. McDonough; Ackerman presided over Friday’s hearing because he was not available. Ackerman granted the order allowing the court to review the materials that were seized from the defendants' jail cells.
If there are documents in those materials that were subject to the protective order, it could lead to further investigation of how they were disclosed and by whom.
A violation of a protective order could lead to a criminal contempt charge, which is a misdemeanor crime. It may also be subject to review by the Attorney Grievance Committee for the Appellate Division, Third Department in Albany, which investigates allegations of misconduct by attorneys.
Thomas, 35, was an aspiring nurse and a promoter of her friends’ businesses who grew up in Albany. The father of her oldest son, Elijah Jr., was Elijah Cancer. Cancer was a former gang member turned anti-violence advocate for 518 SNUG. He was shot and killed breaking up a dispute at a party in July 2018. No one has ever been charged in connection with his death.
Court records indicate all four defendants charged with killing Thomas have lengthy criminal records, including convictions for violent crimes and weapons charges.
Anthony and Perry previously served time in federal prison after being convicted in a racketeering case against a South End gang known as the Original Gangsta Killas. They pleaded guilty in 2010.
Branch previously served time in state prison for attempted murder, weapon charges and promoting prison contraband.

‘WE CANNOT SIMPLY GO, GO, GO.’ WHAT IS ‘GIRL MOSSING,’ THE WELLNESS TREND THAT REJECTS HUSTLE CULTURE?

On TikTok and Instagram, people are “girl mossing”: lying on a forest floor, staring up at a leafy canopy or caressing moss. The United States National Forest Foundation even borrowed the term to kick off its 2024 Instagram account. Girl mossing recognizes a need to step away from the pressures of modern, urban life, promoting spending time in nature as a restorative practice. The fast pace and pressure of neoliberal capitalism take an enormous toll on well-being: not just personal, but social and planetary.

FIVE WAYS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CAN IMPROVE YOUR DATING LIFE

Artificial intelligence is going to transform how we date. The question is: will it be for better or worse? It’s already causing some real problems, especially related to “romance scams” and other fraud. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Used in the right way, AI can actually make dating better. It can help write profiles and find matches, provide dating advice and coaching and, if all else fails, become a date companion. In my home country of Belgium, more than two thirds (66.4%) of individuals on disability for psychological reasons had cases related to depression or burn-out. These worrisome statistics reflect broader trends across OECD countries, where nearly half (47.6%) of workers with mental-health problems have been absent from the office in the past year, compared

FAMILY-FRIENDLY WORKPLACES BENEFIT EMPLOYEES, BUSINESSES

Paid leave and employee well-being are the focus of a three-part policy series on family-friendly business practices put together by the Brown School’s Clark-Fox Policy Institute at Washington University in St. Louis. “Creating a family-friendly workplace benefits both employees and businesses,” said Gary Parker, associate dean for external affairs and director of the institute. “For employees, it enhances work-life balance and job satisfaction,” he said. “For businesses, it leads to higher retention rates, reduced absenteeism and improved productivity. Policies such as paid leave, flexible work arrangements

HOW TRUMP’S DEFINITION OF A ‘REAL’ AMERICAN HAS GRABBED HIS AUDIENCE—WHAT OUR RESEARCH SHOWS ABOUT WHY

Donald Trump has recently doubled down on his derogatory depictions of undocumented migrants in his bid to win the 2024 presidential election. In an interview with Time magazine, published on April 30 2024, Trump referred to migrants as “criminals,” who “come in and they steal our jobs, and steal our wealth, and they steal our country.” Trump was especially disparaging towards migrants from China, who he said are a “major force that’s forming in our country.” In short, according to Trump, undocumented migration is “an invasion of our country.” Trump’s

NEW STUDY SHOWS MARKETING A BRAND’S SIMPLICITY CAN BACKFIRE

Irritability is a common side effect of heat. When companies tout the simplicity of their products, they may unknowingly invite customer dissatisfaction, new University of Oregon research finds. For decades, “simpler is better” has been accepted as a universal truth in marketing. Nick Light, assistant professor of marketing at the UO’ Lundquist College of Business, has tested that assumption. He found that most consumers prefer offerings that appear to be easy to use and understand. However, trumpeting simplicity can have a hidden, costly downside. “When marketing convinces consumers that things

STUDY SHOWS DISENGAGED STUDENTS MORE LIKELY TO USE AI TOOLS FOR ASSIGNMENTS

A Swansea University psychology study has found that disengaged students are more likely to use AI tools—particularly ChatGPT—for academic assignments, raising questions about academic integrity and the need for proactive interventions. Launched in November 2022, ChatGPT is an AI program capable of answering questions in detailed, human-like ways. Researchers surveyed 160 undergraduate students, aged between 18 and 24, in March 2023 to assess their attitudes towards and past usage of AI tools such as ChatGPT in academic coursework. The study is published in The Internet and Higher Education journal. Thirty-two

HUMAN CULTURE IS CHANGING TOO FAST FOR EVOLUTION TO CATCH UP—HERE’S HOW IT MAY AFFECT YOU

Research is showing that many of our contemporary problems, such as the rising prevalence of mental health issues, are emerging from rapid technological advancement and modernisation. A theory that can help explain why we respond poorly to modern conditions, despite the choices, safety and other benefits they bring, is evolutionary mismatch. Mismatch happens when an evolved adaptation, either physical or psychological, becomes misaligned with the environment. Take moths and some species of nocturnal flies, for example. Because they have to navigate in the dark, they evolved to use the moon

YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE UK SAY THEY ARE LESS LIKELY TO VOTE IF THEIR PARENTS REPORT DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS

With a U.K. General Election approaching, new research has found that parental history of depression can predict whether a young person is likely to intend to vote. The research, led by the Department of Politics at the University of Liverpool, found that, at age 26, people were less likely to intend to vote if they had grown up with a parent experiencing high levels of depressive symptoms. Published in the journal Electoral Studies, the research used the British Cohort Study (BCS), which followed more than 16,000 babies born across a

WHO GETS TO DECIDE WHAT COUNTS AS ‘DISORDER’?

As a scholar of urban governance and data policy, I viewed the responses to protests on U.S. campuses as about more than threats to academic freedom and freedom of speech. They are also threats to the fundamental rights of people in public spaces. The protesters’ tactics, particularly their use of tents in encampments, have brought debates around definitions of public order and disorder to the fore. Over the past couple of months, students in universities across the country, from the University of California, Los Angeles to the Massachusetts Institute of

STUDYING VIOLENCE TOWARD WOMEN AND ANIMALS CAN HELP US DEVELOP STRATEGIES TO PREVENT BOTH

We live in a world where not everyone feels safe and respected, especially women. Sexual violence and abuse are significant global health issues. Intimate partner violence continues to be a problem in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, of the 117,093 victims of police-reported intimate partner violence in 2022, almost 80% were women and girls. More than half of women in the United States have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact. Given these high rates of sexual abuse, it is imperative that we improve upon what we currently know about violence

WHY THE FUTURE OF DEMOCRACY COULD DEPEND ON YOUR GROUP CHATS

I became newly worried about the state of democracy when, a few years ago, my mother was elected president of her neighborhood garden club. Her election wasn’t my worry—far from it. At the time, I was trying to resolve a conflict on a large email group I had created. Someone, inevitably, was being a jerk on the internet. I had the power to remove them, but did I have the right? I realized that the garden club had in its bylaws something I had never seen in nearly all the

NET ZERO IS NOT JUST GOOD SCIENCE—IT’S ALSO A GOOD DEAL FOR ORDINARY PEOPLE

As the UK moves into a general election, a misinformed debate over the country’s climate transition and legally binding net zero targets risks further dividing people. Much of this debate in the UK focuses on the “cost” of net zero. For instance, energy secretary Claire Coutinho recently stated the government did not want a “net zero leviathan” to crush the nation’s “brilliant enterprise economy,” while the Labor Party had to backtrack on its own headline climate investment pledge, citing “affordability” and “fiscal rules.” But the true “cost” is tricky to

THE FASCINATING PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND ‘DINE AND DASH’ AND WHY IT’S ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN A FREE MEAL

Sometimes when I read the newspapers, I think that going to a restaurant and leaving without paying has become something of an epidemic. My research into lying has taught me that the psychology behind acts of deception is often deeply complex. Let me start with a confession. I was guilty of dine and dash a very long time ago before it had a catchy name. I was in a group that hung about a chip shop at the turn-of-the-road in north Belfast, a poor and troubled area. I had a

There are only a handful of cryopreservation facilities across the globe—two in the United States, and one each in Russia, China, Australia and Switzerland. DO WE HAVE MORE EMPATHY FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE SIMILAR TO US? NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTS IT’S NOT THAT SIMPLE

How do people successfully interact with those who are completely different from them? And can these differences create social barriers? TRYING TO SAVE MONEY? RESEARCH SUGGESTS PAYING IN CASH—WHILE YOU STILL CAN

Cash is in crisis. In Australia, it’s now only used for 16% of in-person transactions, down from about 70% in 2007. The situation is so dire that on Monday, independent federal MP Andrew Gee introduced a private member’s bill that would force businesses to accept cash or else face big fines. Only on a recent relisten did I realize it also captures one of the research-based strategies I teach for avoiding communication that backfires. 2024.06.09 04:37 Smooth-Ferret769 This had no success in r/ChanceMe. please help. just a girl from a rural town and not trying to brag

Disclaimer: I am absolutely NOT trying to brag in any way. I come from a small, isolated school with unmotivated students so I genuinely have no idea what other students like me are doing (apart from the students on this thread). I truly just would like some advice. Thanks!
Before judging harshly, read everything I have to say. I promise I'm not trying to be like the people who post the "am I cooked" posts, I swear.
Also I tried my best to format this so that it's easy to read.
My first attempt at this type of post failed, so I'm hoping to get better advice.
Background: rising junior, white, female, pretty high income (parents don't like sharing that information), rural-ish high school, NOT a feeder school, dual citizenship (Italy and U.S.), I speak Italian at home
GPA: 4.0 uw (don't know what my weighted GPA is). It's a 4.0 but my school has intense grade inflation so I actually haven't gotten absolutely perfect grades.
PSAT10: 1370 out of 1520 (730 Reading and 640 Math) (planning on taking the SAT next year)
Advanced Courses: my school only offers 2 APs, so I took both this year (AP World History and AP CSP), I also self studied for two exams (AP Italian and AP Spanish Lang), I'm doing the full IB program for the next two years
Extracurriculars (First two are in order, the rest are kind of just there): (I'm going to give enough information but also keep it vague because I feel weird sharing a lot on the internet like this).
Extracurriculars I'm planning on doing:
Honors and Awards (I'm hoping to get):
I know this was really long, but I would appreciate any and all advice. What are some other things I could do? Or what could I do to increase my chances? Thank you so much!
I also realized that I forgot to include Letter of Rec predictions. Honestly, I don't really know how to form connections with my teachers because I've always been taught that your teachers aren't your friends. I just feel like it's weird but anyways...
Counselor: Since I ski 5 days a week practically year round with intense summer training on and off snow (another detail I forgot to mention), I have a special counselor who pays me special attention. However, she doesn't strike me as the best so idk. She really likes me so I'm hoping for a 9/10
History teacher: she taught me my freshman year and this year and she's the organizer for the Spanish Teaching assistant extracurricular. She also likes me but I don't have a particularly special connection to her. maybe a 6/10
Advisor: I have an advisory teacher who I really like because he seems my potential but I also think he's kind of scary and don't have a personal connection with him. He's super nice but he's also never been my teacher before. He always says that other teachers are impressed by my ability to handle sports and schoolwork but a lot of my classmates do that so idk maybe 8/10?
Another detail I forgot to mention is that my mom was born in Italy and my dad was born in France (idk if that affects anything). My mom attended college in Italy but my dad went to college in the U.S.
