2024.05.15 00:32 cuckmeister66 My body's response to anxiety - any tips?

Hi everybody,
I'm a 28 year old guy with a relatively good corporate job, a decent social life, and good health and hobbies. I'm likable and don't have a particularly stressful life.
That said, I've struggled with anxiety since I can remember. I've always been the anxious type, thinking bad things will happen and fantasizing about potential bad outcomes.
I've come along way with the mental part of anxiety - I know the tricks and have been to therapy on and off. Re-frames, journaling, scheduling worrying time, actually playing out the bad scenarios to realize how unlikely they are. All these provide marginal relief, and I appreciate them for what they are.
However, what I'm really struggling with is my body's response to anxiety - particularly acute anxiety. I do take beta blockers which help keep my heart rate low, but even with them, my blood pressure shoots up, I feel it in my heart, and I get a bit sweaty, tense, and tunnel-visioned.
It's been happening all my life, but I'm starting to get more frustrated than ever. I know what it traces back to - yearning for others' approval, fear of being judged, being in trouble, and/or looking dumb or inept. These things make me feel scared and as though I'll be exposed. However, I've had success in life in spite of my anxiety response - it's almost as if because I've succeeded in spite of my anxiety, my body has entrained the anxiety response as a positive. It's not a positive for me, though - it's excessive and unhealthy.
I am trying to find a way to re-wire my body to not have such a strong response when confronted with things that make me anxious. Breathwork helps me calm down after the resopnse, but it doesn't blunt the response in the first place.
Maybe I need EMDR or to try holotropic breathing, or perhaps something else.
Does anyone have any tips or any similar experience? Thanks so much.
EDIT: some specific triggers that give me an immediate feeling of tension and adrenaline/pounding heart, sometimes with one sided head pain(even though it's slowed from the beta blockers):

2024.05.15 00:04 Character-Season-823 $26 for 4 generic pills when I have insurance?

I’m giving a speech at a funeral and my dr gave me 2 pills of 2 different types (beta blocker and benzo) so I could try out each before the funeral and go with the one that helps me deliver a great speech to honour my grandfather.
Showed up to shoppers and paid the $13 filling fee. As I left I realized there was only 1 bottle in the bag. They said they’d fill the other one in 15 minutes and I attempted to confirm that I shouldn’t be paying an additional $13 because it’s their mistake and should’ve all been completed on one order. Find out that it’s $13 per bottle. So $26 filling fee. My wife and my insurance covered 100% of the $0.30 cents the pills cost but none of the $26 filling fee. Is this outrageous.
I usually am pro-free market business (not monopoly/oligopolies) please let me know if anyone knows an alternative to Shoppers in small towns with better filling rates.

2024.05.14 23:26 OkProfession7702 I have terrible performance anxiety and I'm not sure what to do about it.

To clarify off the bat, it isn't bedroom performance, it's just in general. It's stopping me from doing a lot of things that I want to do, whether recreationally or for self-improvement (for example, I want to start playing Magic the Gathering Arena again, but I can't bring myself to queue for a game against people, and I want to apply for college but I'm too scared of doing badly.)
It's especially bad when if I'm playing something against someone I know, if I don't pull out of the activity it can get to the point I'm in tears and shaking uncontrollably for 2 hours even after the activity has finished.
I'm not really sure what to do about it. I've applied to therapy but I keep getting ignored (I hear literally nothing back) and CBT/DBT really didn't work for me last time I tried them, and the beta blockers I get prescribed aren't really enough either. Are there any self-help books or anything I could do? When I've looked up Reddit posts about it they've all been about sports or bedroom performance.

2024.05.14 21:34 MZeef Friend experiencing debilitating neurological symptoms after “pop” sensation in head

Hi all, a friend’s life was turned upside down after she felt a popping sensation in her head. The night before, she attended a concert involving SUPER loud music, cocaine and molly. She was very active and outgoing before this incident, and now she can barely leave her house.
Personal info: 28f, 5’2, 150 lbs Non smoker non drinker for 2 months / previous smoker & drinker
Medical history: Phyllodes tumor of breast, benign & removed in June 2023
Current meds: 60 mg propronal, & 20 mg amitriptilyne, fish oil omega 3, & magnesium twice a day
Symptoms, tests, treatments in her own words: “In November of 2023 I ran myself into the ground & felt really faint one morning after a night out. I felt a pop in my head induced by stress 1 day after while I was working. A really bad headache then followed with symptoms of vertigo, nausea, panic attacks, extreme sensitivity to light, astigmatism, poor memory, speech impediments, and the inability to drive or be in public places. I quit drinking all together, cut out coffee, cleaned up my diet, limited screen time, and have made a lot of progress since… I’ve seen all types of doctors, have done multiple MRIS with & without contrast, blood work, am currently meeting with a neurologist who has had me try all types of medication. All of the tests came back clear and I’m currently taking a beta blocker to help with the panic attacks as well as a very low dose of anti depressant & both have helped a little bit imo. I also take fish oil omega 3 - & magnesium twice a day. What’s driving me insane is the pressure & buzz like feeling in my head that will not go away. It feels like my ears need to pop but it's in my crown followed by constant tinnitus. I’ve become extremely depressed by all of this and am at the point where I don’t really see any way out so am willing to try anything. At this point we're calling it vestibular migrane but I am still uncertain as to what I am dealing with.”
Does anyone have any ideas about what could be going on, or what steps she should take next?

2024.05.14 20:41 NoHoliday1277 I'm in hell

Started getting symptoms last November and haven't gotten at all better till I started beta blockers after 2 hospitalizations in March. Things have been trending upwards and though for a bit there I could manage to have a small very limited social life(less than once a week seeing people) and not just lay in bed all day. Cue the heat Friday... I am having worse nausea than before the pills again, I cleaned my bedroom and my skin was BURNING for hours after and I was red in the face too. I had to rest. I tried a cold shower and I nearly passed out. How do you deal with heat?? It's literally over 30 degrees celcius here ALL summer. I have to limit water intake because I have a rare pituitary disease can only have 2L a day, always iced water... I wanna cry.

2024.05.14 19:46 LiteratureExtreme515 Neuro appt next week, suggestions?

LSS, I have spent the last 2 years trying to figure out the source of my daily dizziness. Had MRI, CT, VNG, hearing tests etc. MRI, CT, hearing is all normal, VNG showed hypofunction in my left ear at the time (this will be repeated in a few months to see if it was due to a recent ear infection at the time, or has been sustained this entire time) Anyways, my otologist has landed on VM and referred me to a Neuro migraine specialist. I have some migraines, mostly menstrual cycle related, but my dizziness is what I need to treat the most. I can live with the migraines after experiencing feeling horribly dizzy every single day. Going into this appointment, what do I need to push/advocate for? I know medication efficency varies for everyone, but anything in particular that has helped the dizziness the most? Beta blockers are my only no-go because my HR is already low sometimes. Any tips or suggestions with medications or treatment to inquire about is appreciated.

2024.05.14 18:38 StaffAlone What the hell is wrong with my voice? I have to make a presentation. I have an unnatural and anxious voice, even if my heart is not racing

I have a graduation project to do in the summer, I have to make a presentation and I imagine how it will go. I don't know, what to do in advance, so that I don't get a similar sound? When I try to resist, it's worse, and if I soften my tone, it's unnatural, looks I'm sleepy, there's no emotion in my voice and I have a feeling in my throat as I can't get my voice out. I don't know how to look at the picture, it mostly happens to me when I'm tired or my heart is racing. As soon as I feel, that my voice is changing, I become more anxious, if the voice sounds good - I am more attuned
What can I do to prevent it? One thing I think is to rest well, but sometimes I don't know when it coming. I'm thinking of going to a therapist too (I've never been), but I don't know how much it will help me? I tried a beta blocker, but it doesn't change anything, I just have trouble concentrating; This is also an additional problem for the presentation
I've had anxiety in general for years, especially when I got off the SSRI. The symptoms are as follows: fatigue, anxiety, neck pain, derealization, loss of concentration, lack of emotion.

2024.05.14 17:54 Mysterious-Ad6048 About to go on Prozac for anxiety and intrusive thoughts.

I could use some positive affirmation today. I’ve experienced pretty bad anxiety for a few years now and recently began having extremely frequent bouts of intrusive thinking. I solely find these thoughts to surround an untimely and painful death by serious bodily harm or disease. It’s to the point I often feel an impending sense of doom and a really inescapable feeling of dread. My doctor is wonderful and suggested a beta-blocker to start when she sensed my initial apprehension towards Prozac. I could report back and let her know if I changed my mind. The beta blocker has helped tremendously for my physical panic symptoms but anxiety and thoughts persist still. I’ve officially asked to start on Prozac and was simply hoping to find some similar but positive experiences. I’m tired of being in an echo chamber in my head. I just need some encouragement.

2024.05.14 13:41 Subject-Cycle-6266 We finally found out what caused my mother's years of struggle

We finally found out what caused my mother's years of struggle
My mother has had years of stomach problems, depression and anxiety, fast heartbeat etc She went to a cardiologist and this man gave her years beta blocker saying it was an impulse in the brain that caused her fast heartbeat. Can you imagine being this stupid.. I always knew something else was causing these symptoms. I finally found out about this bacteria, and how it can have no symptoms sometimes also. But sometimes after she ate something she would get so nauseous and anxious that she had to take a relaxation pill. Her doctor is an absolute asshole who doesn't care about you as a person, and he always states that it is all in her head.. She took beta blockers, anti depression medication for years, now we can finally start her treatment and making her better. I find it so sad that doctors don't connect the dots and that we have to everything ourselves
I hope I can be of help to others who are looking for answers as well. Keep digging!

2024.05.14 13:33 nus321 What to take to slow down? Speech for example

I take beta blockers like Propanalol to calm me down of adrenaline
My head and hands no longer shake. But I noticed I speak too fast still.
I work in reception dealing front desk and calls.
When I play the calls back hearing my voice it's too trembly and fast.
I've been trying to focus and slow down my speech for weeks but not working.
Maybe a supplement can help?

2024.05.14 12:06 Mysterious-Ad6048 Anxiety seems to be the score of the film that is my life

I don’t really know a time in my life where I wasn’t an overthinking, anxious ball of cortisol. Recently however I find myself with more and more intrusive thoughts surrounding death; my own, people around me, bodily harm, sickness, accidents. Not so much the afterlife or the state of being dead but the lead up to it all. The process. The unexpectedness of it all. I try to remain mindful but it only seems to aggravate this other side of my brain that’s hyper aware of the dialogue inside and just wants all noise to stop. I’m in therapy and I recently started a beta blocker to help with my panic attacks which have subsided greatly. However this unshakable weight and pit in my stomach seem to hang with me wherever I go. I don’t wanna feel so trapped on an island by myself. I wasn’t always like this. A few weeks ago I could operate with relative ease. Now it feels like a record in the backround I can’t seem to turn off.

2024.05.14 08:18 Live_Discipline_8224 Any other medication that helps other than midodrine and beta blockers?

I’ve been on midodrine for 4 months and the only thing it’s helped with is blood pooling and reducing my HR. I am still light headed constantly, still get heart palps. I have tried atenolol and propranolol and once again all it does is reduce my HR but I still feel shit and light headed on it.
I do the standard increased electrolytes, compression and keep up with my hydration.

2024.05.14 08:15 ctst21 Did anyone ever only have pain as their first sign of PD?

I am 29 and i have had a strange pain under my glans, to the left of the frenulum for about two weeks now. The best way to describe it is that it feels like when you have a bruise and you press on it, but it's not really that painful.
I can't really feel the pain when I press on it while it's flaccid or erect. I feel it most when my erection presses against my clothes, or when i attempt to masturbate (although i have been abstaining). The pain feels like it's deep inside, somehow. I would rate it at a 1 out of 10 on a pain scale. It doesn't feel like it's getting worse, but it also doesn't feel like it's getting better. There are no signs of any curving, indentation or plaque. The erection itself does not hurt my penis, just when pressure is applied to it.
The reason I am a little worried is because I have been on a very low dose of beta blockers (20mg propranolol) for just over a year now and I read that a rare side effect of long term use is peyronies. I have no recollection of injuring my penis. However, I have noticed that I have been getting potent nocturnal erections recently and I think maybe I bruised my penis sleeping on my stomach somehow?
I have a drs appointment tomorrow morning, but I was wondering if anyone here might have any insight?

2024.05.14 07:44 elscrappo3 How do you regulate yourself when you're struggling to study?

I have two subjects which is already a lower workload than normal, but I fall behind insanely quickly. I've only missed 1.5 lessons but my course is incredibly fast paced and jam packed that it's just a given for everyone that if you miss a day, you're already behind.
Having ADHD as well as POTS and also other mental health stuff on top of that makes it really difficult. I'm trying to learn content from home but it's so exhausting and frustrating. And if I get frustrated/angry enough from not understanding the content I start crying from overwhelm. Then I HAVE to stop working to calm back down and it's basically a cycle of going to sit at my desk, do work anywhere from a couple of minutes to an hour, and inevitably get overwhelmed and cry again.
I already have accommodations in place, I feel like there's not much more I can be offered. I'll get a resit for my exam and I get two attempts for every assessment, but I'm just struggling. I don't want to have to feel like this for my entire course. I'm on meds for ADHD and do typical things for POTS like salt, lots of fluids, pacing, beta blockers etc.
But I just keep having days where even though I've been so careful to not push myself and be mindful of pacing, I still don't have to energy to do as much work as I need to, because I get so emotionally dysregulated if I can't wrap my head around it.
I've done yearssss of therapy including CBT and DBT so I know a lot of calming techniques. It's just that my fuse is so short/tolerance is so low for frustration and I have to keep repeatedly regulating myself over just studying. I'm so tired and feel so dejected right now. I don't know what else to do to make this easier.

2024.05.14 05:01 xxxlun4icexxx Anyone else experience weird 1-3 second lightheadedness/out of it feeling?

Hi,
34 yo previously healthy male here. I have been struggling the last 3 months with random bouts of tachycardia, shortness of breath, uncontrollable tremoring/shaking during them, impending doom, basically your standard panic attack symptoms. I actually got it for the first time about a month before I got sick with Covid which made me think maybe it’s unrelated but a lot of people have said they think it may be.
The first one was pretty bad my heart rate didn’t go down for about 8 hours before I crashed. Some of them seemed maybe stress induced but some were just completely out of nowhere. Exercise seemed to bring it on as well. I also had two mornings where for no reason I was sweating profusely even though I wasn’t doing anything out of the blue. Did a ton of cardiac tests no issues.
Anyway, I started a beta blocker and eventually these episodes subsided and I did in general start to feel better however I have one symptom that seems to be staying and I’m not quite sure where to go from here to look into it. I am following up with my doc tomorrow but wondered if anyone else who had Covid also has this.
It’s hard to explain but basically it’s 1-3 second bouts of this weird lightheadedness/dizziness. Not quite presyncope but getting there if that makes sense. It usually happens when I am sitting down and more often than not I notice it when I have my head pointed down at my phone. Also, I noticed that when I play a video game, those moments when you are really into it, or generally get that “high” from something good happening, I get the dizziness/lightheadedness instead of that good feeling.
I know that sounds weird but it’s the best I have to describe it. Did anyone else experience anything like this?
