My 10 year old in fourth grade, in my opinion struggles with handwriting. She was in kinder when covid shut downs happened and didn’t return until second grade. That year, was mostly computer work at desks 3ft apart. Third grade she actually did more worksheets in addition to computer work. This year it’s been more computer work and some hands on work, however she has 35 students in her class and they are a rowdy group and it’s been a challenging year for the class and teacher. I am guessing in fourth grade they expect students to have handwriting down, so they don’t go over it.
My daughter makes her letters in some odd ways. It is also pretty sloppy and I’d like to work on this over the summer. I don’t want to be too much of a stickler about this. (I never could hold my pencil the way teachers wanted me to in school and it drove me nuts when they were on my case about it so much.) but the way my daughter makes her letters seems so inefficient to me, for example, a lower case a, she will make the circle twice before adding the “tail”.
Is there a good resource or some sort of material I could use with her over the summer to help improve this? I have a kinder right now as well who is learning to write, but I think my 10 year old would be frustrated if I gave her kindergarten materials to practice. When we had Covid shut downs her and I would often butt heads when it came to handwriting. I have the handwriting without tears book, there were definitely tears.
On another note, would it be odd to reach out to her teacher and ask what areas she could lightly work on over the summer? I guess sort of like a mini end of the year conference or just get some feedback? We get report cards after school ends, but they aren’t always clear on what each category is and I so I don’t want to bother her over the summer asking questions.

The Memory Palace technique is a fantastic tool for remembering the things you study.
The catch is that you need to have multiple Memory Palaces. Ideally, each Memory Palace should be well-formed.
If you build them or develop them as you go, you're trying to do two things at once. So make sure to read this guide in full.
Then create a bunch of Memory Palaces the optimal way before applying them to your studies.
Maximum success in remembering your studies will soon follow.
History and Origin of the Method
No one knows exactly when the Memory Palace technique first arrived on the scene – but some people sure like to argue about it.
Lynne Kelly has good work on the pre-historic origins in The Memory Code, but she'll be the first to tell you that a lot of her ideas are speculative. We just don't know exactly how the ancient people around the world came up with the concept.
When it comes to using the technique for studying in a way that basically matches our current school system, one interesting starting place is Hugh of St. Victor.
His approach to the Memory Palace technique is one of the first places you see number systems applied to historical dates, for example. A good place to red him directly in English is The Medieval Craft of Memory, edited by Mary Carruthers.
In any case, you can spend your entire life studying the history of this technique. The more merrier if you ask me as someone who loves looking at the Memory Palaces' origins.
But I also love to help people who just want learn how Memory Palaces work so you can rapidly apply them to your studies.
Benefits of Using a Memory Palace for Studying
The benefits of this ancient memory method in terms of other study techniques is easy to summarize:
The Memory Palace lets you place a lot of information in your long-term memory through a variety of active learning processes. That way, you can pass exams without stress or spending more time than necessary. More free time opens up and you enjoy a feeling confidence every time you study and sit for your tests.
For many people, there's another clear benefit:
Using the Memory Palace is much more interesting than using spaced repetition software.
But to use it optimally still involves a kind of spaced repetition. Let's look at that next.
Understanding the Memory Palace
The Memory Palace is actually not just one technique. It's at least five:
There's a lot of science into exactly how "mental imagery" should be defined.
If you find it enjoyable and rewarding, look up the science that goes into the Memory Palace. If not, just make sure that you don't mistakenly think of the Memory Palace like Sherlock Holmes.
It's not a technique where you say, "I must go to my Mind Palace."
Far from it.
The point is to use the five systems so that information enters your long-term memory without having to think about your Memory Palaces at all.
In a way, the Memory Palace technique is like training-wheels on a bike. As soon as you're done, the mnemonics fall away. All that remains is the target information.
And that is a very beautiful thing!
Setting Up Your Memory Palace
To create your first Memory palace, choose a familiar location. Many people do better by using a building, like a home, school, church, art gallery, book store, library or the like.
You can practice visualizing the layout in detail purely in your imagination. However, I suggest you draw the location.
I'll give you some Memory Palace drawing examples in the resource section at the end of this guide.
Establishing Clear and Distinctive Locations within the Palace
The key is to make sure that every part of your Memory Palace is clear to you.
To do this, I suggest you avoid inventing locations or adding imaginary elements like pretend couches and bookcases (stunts like that come later).
The reason for this suggestion is that when learning the Memory Palace technique, most people start with very weak visualization skills. And their memory is quite rusty.
So when you use a Memory Palace, use only what you remember of a location. To add anything, even things like flying off balconies or passing ghost-like through walls gives you something you have to remembe.r
That's called a Memorized Palace and places cognitive load on any familiar location.
A true Memory Palace maximizes the power of using distinctive locations exactly the way you remember them, without elaborating anything.
Rest assured, there's plenty of opportunity to elaborate things inside of your Memory Palaces. That's what we'll discuss after going through one of the most important points of them all.
When Exactly Should You Use the Memory Palace Technique While Studying?
There are two different ways to answer this question, depending on your current level of skill and the nature of what you're memorizing.
Let me describe these two ways based on how I use the technique.
The first is to extract the information I want to memorize from books, videos, podcasts, etc. before doing ~any~ memorizing.
This is my preferred approach because it batches a few separate skills into refined activities:

But if I'm studying for an exam, I will separate the tasks because it's much more efficient and has reduced the feeling of being overwhelmed because I'm trying to do two things at once. Keep this experience in mind if you try memorizing as you read and feel similarly overwhelmed. Splitting out the activities will undoubtedly allow you to focus on encoding your info with much greater freedom and mental dexterity.
Encoding Information into the Memory Palace

A simple example involves how I used my brother's home recently to remember the word, enantiodromia.
I imagined Ant-Man watching Videodrome in his living room.
There's a bit more to the image than that, but the core technique was executed by paying attention to the alphabetical construction of the word and choosing images on that basis.
The sound and spelling associations of Ant-Man and Videodrome were paired with the living room.
Creating Vivid and Memorable Mnemonic Images
To encode information using vivid images, it's actually not really about images.
Instead, you're using the Memory Palace as a logical sequence to link highly multisensory images.
I prefer what I call the KAVE COGS formula.
Rather than seeing Ant-Man as such, I follow this simple formula on each and every station of the Memory Palace.
K = Kinesthetic
A = Auditory
V = Visual
E = Emotional
C = Conceptual
O = Olfactory
G = Gustatory
S = Spatial
Literally feeling what it would be like to watch a movie in the body of Ant-Man creates a physical or kinesthetic sensation. I hear the sound of the movie Videodrome in my ears while remembering it's basic look and the look of the Memory Palace.
Ant-Man has a specific attitude and emotions, so I feel those along with thinking about the concepts involved in the meaning of the target word, enantiodromia.
Finally, I smell and taste (olfactory and gustatory) where necessary. In this case, I did not, but if I needed to, I could imagine my brother bringing in a steak covered in ants to make the image much stronger in memory.
You don't have to use KAVE COGS, but most memory improvement teachers have some version of an elaboration process like this. The trick is to practice in multiple well-formed Memory Palaces.
If the Memory Palaces aren't well-formed, it can be difficult to place enough of your focus on making the associations properly.
Using the Memory Palace for Different Subjects
To use this technique for a variety of subjects, make sure to have multiple Memory Palaces.
The simplest way to set-up for the mental dexterity involved in switching between multiple topics is to have at least one Memory Palace for each letter of the alphabet. From this core Memory Palace Network, you can develop many sub-Memory Palaces.
Only scarcity-based thinking holds people back in this regard. In reality, there is more space around each and everyone of us than any of us could ever hope to use in a lifetime.
Studying for History: Dates and Events
For memorizing dates, you'll want to add a number system. The most popular is the Major System or its "big brother," the 00-99 PAO System.

Studying for Science: Concepts and Theories
The trick to dealing with concepts and theories is simple:
Make sure you aren't hypnotizing yourself into thinking anything that can be worded can't be memorized.
If you can memorize one word, you can memorize thousands. Learn to do that and then, if you need to memorize longer ideas expressed in sentences, simply memorize the definition verbatim.
Often this isn't necessary. I memorized enantiodromia and the exact definition came along "free" based on other aspects I included in the living room with the core imagine. I know the author name and book title where I encountered this term as well, and none of that information needed to be encoded in the Memory Palace.
But please understand that a lot of that additional information that came along with a "less is more" approach involves studying science concepts using these techniques for many years. There is a "compound" effect because the more you study, the more concepts will snap together without any special additional steps.
Thus, it's a best practice to memorize both long verbatim definitions and practice going off of keywords alone. Soon you'll see that often memorizing just one word brings in tons of other information through the deep connection-making you've already been doing along with the power of context that comes from simply summarizing a concept in your own words.
Studying for Languages: Vocabulary and Grammar Rules
Language learning is assisted by Memory Palaces, but not achieved solely by this approach.
One way to approach things is to have your 26 Memory Palaces linked by the alphabet. Then place 10 words in each Memory Palace, i.e. ten words that start with 'A' in your 'A' Memory Palace, etc.
This starter exercise will leave you with 260 words in your target language. You can expand this number substantially by adding a sentence to most or all of the vocabulary you've established later on or during this setup process.
The exact number you'll wind up with could be in the thousands.
Again, this is not the only way to learn a language. But it helps.
To take things further, make sure that you are reading, writing, speaking and listening to the language near-daily. You will need to combine both active learning and passive learning approaches and actually use the language.
Most of my polyglot friends use Memory Palaces to some degree, but each person interprets exactly how they use them in their own way.
Review and Practice Techniques With Your Memory Palaces
The core reason to use the Memory Palace technique for studying at all is for spaced-repetition.
To do it well, you will practice a specific kind of retrieval that will strengthen your memory and usher your target information into long-term memory quickly.
Let's say you have 10 pieces of information in a Memory Palace. You want to apply equal doses of primacy effect and recency effect to each piece of information.

Adapting and Expanding Your Memory Palace as Needed
It's possible to change Memory Palaces and extend their size.
However, if you develop them optimally in the first place, such measures should not be needed.
If you want to do so anyway, it's basically just an imaginative process. You can add paintings to Memory Palaces and then journey around within them, or connect one Memory Palace to another in ways that don't actually reflect reality.
I would only suggest that you take care around doing this because you are turning a true Memory Palace into a Memorized Palace by engaging in this kind of activity.
Dealing with Overcrowded Palaces
Overpacking your Memory Palaces is bound to happen if you're a serious user.
Having more Memory Palaces is the most direct way to prevent this from becoming an issue. It's also useful to experiment with the advice found in the older Memory Palace instruction manuals:
You can also practice clearing them out if they get too packed – literally imagining a broom sweeping out your associations or something similar. But setting them up optimally in the first place is the ideal.
Keeping Images Clear and Distinct Over Time
Clear images are guaranteed when you use highly familiar figures, like Ant-Man and movies you know, etc.
Some people struggle with this principle because they don't partake in much popular culture or know many people.
The trick is to start wherever you are now and develop associations over time.
For example, if you learn the term enantiodromia, you'll discover that it's connected to Carl Jung. You can then use Carl Jung as one of your images. He is connected to a whole host of characters, and the extension of your associations can just build from there.
I know that it can be hard to feel like you have enough, but the time to get started is now. Soon, you will have an entire "paracosm" of figures to use in your Memory Palace Networks.
Should You Use The Memory Palace Technique For Studying?
The Memory Palace is a powerful mnemonic device. There's nothing quite like it for those who find the approach appealing.
I cannot stress enough that the point of the technique is to enable frequent and easy mental reviewing of your study material.
You want to use familiar locations, and whenever possible, base your Memory Palaces on locations where you study and even where you have to take your exams. I used York University when studying there precisely because that was where I was taking my exams.
This choice creates additional memory boosts based on what scientists call context dependent or state dependent memory. Your brain will feed you more details automatically thanks to this effect – or at least you give it more opportunities to do so when you base Memory Palaces on these kinds of locations.
Above all, each person needs to experiment. Ask question when necessary. Or seek further help.

I would only suggest that you take care around doing this because you are turning a true Memory Palace into a Memorized Palace by engaging in this kind of activity.
Dealing with Overcrowded Palaces
Overpacking your Memory Palaces is bound to happen if you're a serious user.
Having more Memory Palaces is the most direct way to prevent this from becoming an issue. It's also useful to experiment with the advice found in the older Memory Palace instruction manuals:
- Leave ample space between stations
- Explore "write" your associations into the walls (Aquinas suggests this based on the wax tablet metaphor of memory)
You can also practice clearing them out if they get too packed – literally imagining a broom sweeping out your associations or something similar. But setting them up optimally in the first place is the ideal.
Keeping Images Clear and Distinct Over Time
Clear images are guaranteed when you use highly familiar figures, like Ant-Man and movies you know, etc.
Some people struggle with this principle because they don't partake in much popular culture or know many people.
The trick is to start wherever you are now and develop associations over time.
For example, if you learn the term enantiodromia, you'll discover that it's connected to Carl Jung. You can then use Carl Jung as one of your images. He is connected to a whole host of characters, and the extension of your associations can just build from there.
I know that it can be hard to feel like you have enough, but the time to get started is now. Soon, you will have an entire "paracosm" of figures to use in your Memory Palace Networks.
Should You Use The Memory Palace Technique For Studying?
The Memory Palace is a powerful mnemonic device. There's nothing quite like it for those who find the approach appealing.
I cannot stress enough that the point of the technique is to enable frequent and easy mental reviewing of your study material.
You want to use familiar locations, and whenever possible, base your Memory Palaces on locations where you study and even where you have to take your exams. I used York University when studying there precisely because that was where I was taking my exams.
This choice creates additional memory boosts based on what scientists call context dependent or state dependent memory. Your brain will feed you more details automatically thanks to this effect – or at least you give it more opportunities to do so when you base Memory Palaces on these kinds of locations.
Above all, each person needs to experiment. Ask question when necessary. Or seek further help.

I'm not gonna say the Disney seasons were masterpieces of storytelling. But Disney *GASP* didn't murder Power Rangers!
Ninja Storm, Dino Thunder, and SPD are my favorite 3 seasons. (though my personal favorite arc in all of Power Rangers is 100% the Psycho Rangers. Brilliant evil plan from Astronema, great fight scenes, and a showcase of the rangers having to overcome just being outmatched on every level)
Ninja Storm may have leaned too much into comedy. Looking back, Lothor himself was too much comic relief........though I do go back and rewatch the "made-up word jar" joke and Zurgane dancing from time to time. But the season is really fun! Now, the pacing is pretty disjointed, like giving us the Thunder Rangers way too early. But upon rewatch, I still have tons of fun with the plot-heavy episodes, and the characters are really fun, even though Sensei Rodent can suck it with his bullshit advice. Vexacus and Motodrone were cool. I like the emphasis put into the generals this season. I like villain hierarchies like this. And I enjoyed the stuff with Cam and his resentment over not being a ranger despite being arguably more qualified than any of the other 5. But........the phrase "wind ninja" always got on my nerves because water and earth are NOT wind, idiots! And although the stock music is sometimes distracting, this season had some awesome BGMs: Shane's battlizer transformation theme. I know, it's not much, but I think BGMs like that should just be mentioned more in general. It's epic, upbeat, and gives us a vibe that the bad guy's about to get their ass kicked. Anyone remember the Hurricane Megazord's debut? Such an epic use of that BGM. Also, the morphing sequence in episode 37 immediately followed by them getting in their zords to face Vexacus with another AWESOME BGM is just an amazing sequence. And……respect Kelly, the most PATIENT boss ever besides Benson!
Now, we all know why we love Dino Thunder. The legend himself is back and in an even better leadership role, and it's his turn to take someone into this crazy world of Ranger life. Tommy Oliver found his way back to the power as a mad scientist dinosaur tries to twist his work. And a lot of the episodes, like Ninja Storm, are really fun. I myself like to go back and rewatch the very first morph, which is SO DOPE, and rewatch the following fight with that badass fight BGM! Now, these aren't phenomenal ranger characters, and once again, the extra rangers were introduced too early, but they're still very fun, and the combat was always on point. And it was great to see Tommy back where he belongs: on a battlefield in spandex that sparks when you hit it. Dino Thunder was a great legacy season. Also........."DINO RANGERS ROAR! POWER RANGERS SCORE!" How can you not like the theme song? In fact, I'm gonna listen to it while I type the rest.
SPD. This was my introduction to Power Rangers. Had the first 5 episodes on DVD when I was in kindergarten. Didn't watch it in full until I was in middle school. I really liked the main 5. I always liked the trope of criminals with good hearts being given a new path by someone who hates wasting potential. Sky was a great foil for Jack and Syd, Bridge and Z are just so likable, and Syd's spoiled attitude clashing with the life of a ranger was often entertaining as she grew. I think it was a really neat detail that she grew up listening to the songs of a past ranger. Cruger's story and how it affected him made for a cool 2-parter, his sword is beyond badass, and I loved his dynamic with Kat. She was all "I know you've been through a lot, but if you're going to send KIDS against the one who caused it, you need to get off your ass and fight with them!" And then there's the thing with Sky and his father. Having no idea the criminal in front of him killed his father, Sky lets his emotions get played with just ONE time, and the criminal escapes. Thus, Jack decides that the best way for Sky to get closure is to bring the guy in himself, so he GIVES HIM HIS MORPHER! That's awesome and such a bro move! This was also the only season I know of that has Power Rangers that switched sides just because they gave up! And......Grumm was awesome. Even when he made jokes. Hell, I still love this scene between Grumm, Mora, and Broodwing in episode 5:
"I have a plan for Grumm, and if you don't have tea with me, I'm not telling him."
"Fine by me."
"But not with me. Sit, Broodwing."
"I will not."
"Oh, you will! Sit!"
"Ok, I'm sitting!"

The joke doesn't undermine his terror. It works BECAUSE he's terrifying! And it's not like there's a shortage of scenes of him without jokes.
Then there's Jungle Fury and RPM. Jungle Fury had RJ, the coolest mentor by far, and the red ranger was......the UNDERDOG?! That's new! Not to mention the antagonist being weaker than other villains and needing training to restore his power! And RPM is......RPM. Ziggy is best green ranger after Tommy! "All you need to know, Bob, is that I'd do it again."
Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and eventually Marvel. Disney managed to decimate them all. But not Power Rangers. It's a damn good thing they got it back then instead of today.

I'm looking for recommendations for a preschool program. Likely my daughter will go on to our local public school for Kindergarten.
Currently I have been looking at Abeka and Torchlight.
This year we had The Good and the Beautiful Preschool Course Set. We worked through some of the lessons and I was thinking of continuing on with that this summer and then switching.
She doesn't mind worksheets, but we also do Knowledge Crates, lots of playdough, sensory bin play etc.

And I’m so anxious! I work primarily with elementary, but I’ve only done Kindergarten one time before for one day. Now I’m going to be with the same kids for the next 8 days. I met with their primary teacher and it looks like they’re mostly doing worksheets and busy work, and it’s the last few weeks so no pressure to really teach, and there’s a para, but I still feel very nervous about this relatively unknown situation. Any advice for kindergarten?

Hey all! My son is going into 1st grade and I've really been strongly feeling led to homeschool him. I think this is the right choice but all my friends and family, except for my mom and husband, feel like he needs to be in public school because of his mental health issues. He is diagnosed with ODD and ADHD and we suspect he has autism as well but the waitlist is months out so we don't know for sure yet. I'm also struggling because I was homeschooled and absolutely hated it.
We tried to go the public school route but he did not get accepted to either of our top two choices and I just have such a bad feeling about it every time we tried to enroll him anyway. I truly think this is what I'm supposed to be doing but I'm super worried that I'm going to mess him up or do something wrong. He graduated Kindergarten through a 2 day a week program and he can read and spell and do math super well so I'm not worried about that. But he is an only child and I'm scared I'm going to isolate him. We are signed up for a co-op that's once a week for science and history and other electives but is that enough? I went to a similar co-op but I also had siblings so I'm not sure if that makes a big difference.
He's also a kinesthetic learner and he HATESSSS worksheets more than anything but he loves to learn through play and with his hands. That is not my style of learning so am I even qualified to teach him?? I've been looking at curriculums and decided on All About Reading & Spelling and Horizons Math. But what if he hates them? We don't have a ton of money so once I buy a curriculum we kinda have to stick with it for the whole year because I can't afford more than one right now.
Sorry if I'm ranting, I'm just really nervous that everyone else is right and my gut is wrong and I'm going to mess him up somehow. I want what's best for him but almost no one believes that I can do this. Again, I know his grades in 1st grade don't really matter in the long run and he's very smart but I don't want to ruin him socially. 1st grade is important for learning how to make friends and he already has issues with that and I don't want to make it worse, especially with him being an only child.  | I only started Duolingo a month ago. I'm learning Japanese so that I can speak the language with my friends and family, who are in Japan at the end of the year. I was sufficiently motivated, of course; you had to be if you wanted to learn a new tongue and at my old age, I can genuinely impart that it's much harder than it would than if I were a young sponge, but unfortunately all that's left is this old crusty crab of a man. So I tried to set myself markers: "where do I want to be in a week's time" was usually what I asked myself and usually that would be enough. Margins were usually razor thin, of course. At the lower league of Duolingo, they're probably not even enough to brag about, but it was enough to keep me engaged. And then Sunday, the 12th of May rolled around and the weekly promotion happened. I was in the Sapphire League now. I did one lesson (showed up to do just one and found myself immediately in the demotion zone, as is normal). I thought to myself "hey, this looks like it's going to be a challenge to get promoted". I saw people who already had 300-400~ XP fighting for the top three spots. It was almost daunting. And then I saw this person at the top ... with 1300~ XP. At least double whoever is next. I won't catch up with him, but you had to at least reach the promotion zone again, right? Or else you're not really trying. So I tried. The 13th of May rolled around and instead of my usual 30 minutes, I set aside an hour for Duolingo. I thought to myself: I'm not going to catch up with Brylee; he's in a league of his own, but I want to get promoted. I had a bit of a stumble, but clocked myself in at approximately 250~ XP. Just short of the promotion zone (8th or 9th at the end of the day), but I found myself satisfied. Then I looked up again. Out of sheer curiosity. Brylee had rocketed to 2300~ XP. It was insane. The gap between Brylee and the person in second was now as large as the gap between the person in second and ... the rest of the table. I thought to myself again: this guy is in a league of his own, for sure. I then closed Duolingo and decided to fool around on Discord for a while ... but then there was a quiet period. For some reason or another, I was then compelled to open Duolingo again and saw that no one's positions had changed since I logged out before ... and the gap really wasn't that big between me and the guy in 5th. So why not go for it? So I did. I clocked in up to 380~ XP. I was in the promotion zone and in 6th by Monday's end (two people named Dawson and Sophie were moving up somewhat and I had to settle), but I was in the promotion zone now. I was a little pleased with myself, I had to admit, but I had no idea what would happen the next day. The day is Tuesday, and Brylee had surged ahead a little more. He was at 3000~ XP. The gap between him and everyone else seemed to be widening by the blink, I kid you not. More urgently, however, I found myself back in the "stay in Sapphire League" zone. I cracked my knuckles, popped open a bottle of root beer ... and worked. I don't know how long I was at it, by the time I finished, I was sitting at 780~ XP. I then looked at Brylee's spot again: I thought to myself that no one was going to touch him. No one. At least not at this level. I was not prepared for what Wednesday would bring. On the 14th of May 2024: BryLee's XP count had not increased. Or perhaps it did, but it wasn't significant enough compared to how far ahead he'd rocketed in the opening days of the week. It would be almost impossible for someone of my level at this stage of Duolingo, but I had to see for real. I did more lessons, did more practices, revised my understanding of the Japanese language. Was I a threat? Were you taking those steps up the summit of this mountain out of fear or out of your superior nature? On Friday, Brylee's answer came. He'd attempted to widen the gap again; however, compared to his burst prior, he'd sloppily only clocked in approximately 300-400 XP, bringing his total to 4600~ XP or ... maybe just under that. However, despite the widened chasm, I found myself ... disappointed. Are you testing me now, Brylee? Shall I waste all my gems on past lessons to give myself double XP on gold? I smirked to myself. He wasn't willing to give it up; my weekend, however, was full, and I couldn't be on Duolingo all day. He'd caught me. The most I could put into my sessions was approximately 20 minutes on Saturday ... and I'd used up about 300 gems just trying to keep up. I was exhausted. I thought of maybe closing the gap one more time; just to give him that one last run for a title that would be his. I couldn't be learning Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji all day or all weekend. I’m hoping to get some guidance from veteran homeschooling parents!
I have been doing “homeschool preschool” for a little over a year with my son. He just turned four.
So far, he’s been doing great! I have just been using a combination of workbooks and printed pages I’ve found online to make sure he’s at the level he’s supposed to be. No fancy materials or anything. He loves “preschool” and really enjoys everything.
So the thing is, he learned to read at about 3.5 years old. Which is amazing. I’m so proud of him. But I don’t know what to do for this coming year of official pre-k. I’ve had him take a few assessments online to see where he’s at reading wise and most say he’s at kindergarten or 1st grade now.
Part of me wants to invest in an actual curriculum like All About Reading for next year so I’m not hindering him and he can continue to grow. But part of me wants to do what we’re doing now and just have him do worksheets and read a lot with me or to me.
I would love advice or anything regarding what you would do as a parent.
The two options I’m leaning towards now are a full curriculum like All About Reading level 2 (that’s what he tested for) OR doing a mix of Evan Moor workbooks, Jady A Phonics Pt 2 and Pt 3 (we have mastered Pt 1) and Explode the Code.

My DD is in kindergarten, since the beginning of this school year, my daughter and this girl in her class clicked and always seem to get along, holding hands together after school at pick up, my daughter always speaks positively about her and I also volunteer in the classroom occasionally and I never saw any issues between how they interact. My daughter also has several friends in her class from preschool/baby years she gets along with. One time, I volunteered, the girl had come up to me asked me if my daughter and her could have a play date, so I said of course, so I approached her daughter’s mom during pick up one day, about possibly setting up a play date and she quickly replied and said when the weather is warmer. I didn’t think anything of it at the time. Then I started noticing whenever my daughter is hugging goodbye to her friend, her mom seemed really uncomfortable would gesture her daughter to stop hugging and quickly walk away. My husband even noticed one time at pick up the mom was not so friendly to him when he tried to greet.
Later my daughter mentioned her friend’s mom volunteered in class and she was not being nice to her, that she kept talking to my daughter in firm voice, kind of made her sad. I said ok, well maybe she was trying to be professional.
Recently I received an email from the mother out of the blue (this is one of the first contact we’ve made) saying there was an incident during recess where my daughter was crying for her best friend when her friend was playing with other girls and she feels my daughter only likes to play with her and not include everyone else. In the email she asked if I could have a conversation with my daughter about making new friends. I was a little confused because the same day my daughter didn’t mention anything about the incident and said she was crying that day because she was upset about not being able to finish worksheet in class. I responded saying sorry about the incident and I’ll talk to her and the teacher.
I emailed the teacher asking about the incident to better understand the issue. The teacher responded short message saying they like to play together and that seems to be going okay. Her teacher and assistant teacher will monitor situation next few days and let me know if we need to action further. To me, the teacher didn’t really seem concerned of their behaviors, and when I ask my daughter about how she feels at recess and her friends, she doesn’t say she’s jealous or feeling sad and says she’s pretty happy playing. Of course at this age, I know a lot happens during the day and as they spend many hours together during the week at school so some days can be worse than others. I try to take my daughter’s words with a grain of salt. That said, I think my daughter is well socialized, she is involved in sports and other activities outside of school where she has social circle, she also has older sibling and she knows how to stand up for herself if needed.
Now I’m kind of feeling annoyed maybe the parent is just trying to manipulate the situation because she simply doesn’t like my daughter playing with hers for some reason. I’m disappointed for my daughter because this girl is her first best friend. I talked to her about making new friendships but my daughter just seems confused because she says she does play with other friends and even other friends from another class. How can I get my daughter to steer away from friend at this age? I don’t want any more trouble over nothing.

We are going to discuss with the tester (a school psychologist), but I wanted to get some outside opinions as well so that I'm well equipped for the conversation. I’m not sure if this is “normal” or if some kind of intervention needs to take place. Some testing and personal background: -The child started talking in full sentences at 15 months old and reading and writing before kindergarten (with no push from us). -They are highly sociable and seem to have an above-average social awareness (doesn’t seem to be on the autistic spectrum). -They seem to have very high executive functioning, even reminding us of day to day scheduling that might otherwise slip through the cracks (doesn’t seem to have ADHD?). -The child is prone to anxiety and has previously suffered from severe separation anxiety and a coughing tic. The separation anxiety seems to be innate and the coughing tic appeared during the pandemic. Our family has also dealt with a lot of chronic and emergency health issues in the past 5 years (so since the child was 2 years old). -The test was given on a Friday early afternoon with no forewarning (pretty much worst-case scenario in my mind). And the child’s other parent was out of town for work that whole week (possible separation anxiety again). -An anecdote about schoolwork: Two weeks ago the child brought home a worksheet with 16 math problems on it. The first 8 were perfect. The next 8 answers were such gibberish that I assumed the child was just messing around and I asked them about it (non-judgmentally, I don’t really care). The child seemed offended by such a statement and claimed to have not realized. The next week the child brought home a bunch of worksheets with about 100 math problems and they were all correct, save two where the child had subtracted instead of added. -My partner and I, as well as the child's 9 year old sibling are all classified as “moderately gifted” according to testing. -The child and sibling have a very close relationship and play together all day long. It’s possible that some of the child’s problem-solving skills have been dampened by reliance on the older sibling. Or that any issues with said skills were masked by the older sibling’s help. So, what should we make of these test scores? Good morning neighbors,
I'm writing here because I'm desperate for help and insight when its comes to my daughter. She is 6 and a kindergartener.
She has a diagnosed mood disorder and were currently undergoing an autism diagnosis. She has an iep. She is currently only allowed to go to school from 845am to 12pm. She is sent home once a week for bad behavior (hitting teachers, hitting students). The lights, the noise, the over stimulation triggers her to go non verbal, hide under desks, hiss and growl like an animal and she'll begin to throw things or deliberately bother others.
Due to this behavior, her gen ed teacher struggles to maintain peace in the classroom. So, my daughter bounces from a para (whos working with 4th and 5th graders who evidently cuss at my child when she irritates them), the school counselor, the receptionist and the principal. I think they hand her a worksheet to scribble on. In 3 months, she has brought home one peice of school work. One of the staff told me, she's not learning here- she's just running around the school, not getting anything done (another issue she has is running out of the room).
I've asked the teachers, where do other kindergarteners go who are like this? Certainly there are kids similar or more challenging than her- where do they go?? I get silence. Nobody seems to know what to do with her.
They say the resource room isn't appropriate because the older kids are triggered by her and this could be dangerous for her.
So, I'm wondering if anybody reading this has been down my road before?
I'm a single mom, short on time and energy to fight for my child. I'm making enough to pay my mortgage and the bills, but private school is out of my budget.
Also, as a side note- she does not have these episodes at home anymore. The last time she had one was about a year and a half ago when we were staying in an air bnb (the environment triggers these episodes). I've taught her how to read at a 2nd grade level and how to do basic math using an abacus. So, she is teachable and she can learn in the right environment, with the right person. As a side note, I do work from home and have set up a little "school" next to my desk. I've been teaching her an extra hour a day to try to make up for what the school ia shorting her.
Another side note, over the years she's had two psychiatrists, two behavioral coaches (mostly coaching me so I can help her) and completed the Emotional ABCs program. I've read several of the "best" books and read countless studies. She is not on medication although I'm at a breaking point and seriously considering it because I'm feeling that the risk now is overshadowed by the potential reward (she's able to integrate into society).
