2024.05.16 18:48 Odd_Match2206 Section 8 rules

I have been living in section 8 housing for a few years . I am on SSDi. I have a connective tissue disease and most likely will not be able to make enough money to survive in the area where I live without it . The median income where I live is around 70k. I also have a service dog and recently an incident with my dog being attacked by another dog and defending himself has left my current landlord trying to discriminate against me and saying that he will not allow my dog to live with me because of this incident . I have reported him to HUD and they are investigating the matter.
In the meantime, I have been staying at my boyfriend’s condo for a few months with my dog while the investigation is pending. Meanwhile I am paying rent for an apartment I am not even able to use right now as my dog cannot stay with me at this time because of this. My boyfriend is talking about marriage with me. We would both like to get married for multiple reasons. However it is possible if I do get married that I will be kicked off section 8 I believe if my husband is living with me in the apartment I am renting and on the lease . I do not know if I have to report my marriage and if I will be kicked off section 8 because of the marriage itself . From my understanding you do have to report any changes to your household , meaning people that live with you . My boyfriend has thought of an idea for my situation with my dog, me and him. He thought that he could get his condo approved by section 8 to rent to me , he could rent it to me, and collect the money from section 8. Then my service dog will be able to live with me, I don’t have to deal with shitty landlords who don’t care about me , and the extra money can go towards helping me. He would move most of his stuff to his parents house to get approval for section 8.
Because the federal government has not updated their social security benefits to account for inflation and rising costs , I can’t foresee that I will be able to continue paying for my medical expenses, gas, or a car in the future. My boyfriend said he sees this as a way to be able to help me to pay for things I will need in my future and we will still be able to get married. It is not the best situation, but a lot of people are in poverty and inflation is killing our dream of being able to get ahead . I just wanted to come here and ask if this would be considered legal according to section 8 policies .

2024.05.16 17:05 TimmyTurnersDad6 Hi, my name is *truck drives by* but everyone just calls me dad.

Note please don't call me dad.
But yes! Hello it's my first time on reddit! A little-lot about me:
  1. I first used reddit as of posting this about 2-ish weeks ago but I've shadowed Reddit for much longer. I never wanted to make an account due to shyness, confusing rules, and the dreaded censorship that seems to plague every platform. (Plz don't ban me reddit, I beg.) However due to my introvertedness taking over more and more, now seemed like a good a time as any!
  2. Yep! The name comes from a Nickelodeon cartoon, and if I have to explain from: ¹ how dare you. ² we can't be friends!
  3. I browsed over hundreds of subreddits, always thinking if I ever did join - where would I start? I had ideas of where, but not-so-much when...And given said strict rules, I always thought I had a knit and knack for sentence structure, spelling and grammar as I've been complimented on my penmanship and organization skills...yet, reddit I'm sure will truly test me on that. I've been out of an English class for many, many years now. So forgive me in advance I'll try my best!
  4. Speaking of many, many years - I'm not so young and not so old either! It's a mystery. And as per reddit guidelines to not share sensitive information - I suppose I will keep it that way. You'll just have to think of me as an enigmatic mr. magoo-like shape; formless in the hands of it's users, but an organized cut figure in staunch of his allies. Think of Inspector gadget except more mysterious. (And who trips on his own shoelaces.) So...basically Timmy's dad!
  5. I'm a gamer, hobbiest writer and photographer, and a perspective teacher (in my former years) and I plan on adding a bit of each into their respective subreddit categories in some form of time. I write amateur poetry from time to time, stemming from natural & creative to erotic prose gasp! and when I feel like it - short stories. I tend to also gravitate towards shapeable wordless songs and giving them my own spin (like ost's), as well as coming up with songs lyrics of my own. I went to a magnet school in my younger years for all of the above forms of writing as well as screenwriting and playwriting. All of this is fun to me and that's the extent of it. Nothing more. If you stumble upon any of my former pieces searching for an answer as to why I wrote some of the things I said, or why I said them...it comes down to just whatever floats into my peripheral vision in that given moment; sometimes it's music that inspires me, and othertimes it's just what needs to be said. And hey, sometimes I'm blindsided by my blindspots. And other, other, some times I stop using the word "time" so often! Grrr!
  6. As for games, I'm a replayer of not-so-old games that are not so timeless, but not-so new anymore eiGarrett! This is mainly due to financial tightness and that older games charm I can't forget. Games such as:
(There are others, but these are some games I hold dear that come off the top of my head.)
I've found games sometimes help shape and induce flow-like states to help us ease into transitions of moment-to-moment actions defining our playable characters, some. Or in other cases, defining ourselves most when we need to caught between a rock and a hard place...like in a gunfight...(I'm looking you Apex Legends, Uncharted, and Destiny.) But yes, in those instances - I've found that what help shape me along with some of the game's life-lessons taught to our characters, did indeed help shape me into the person I am today. (Inb4 someone says I identify as Harumo-chan the master of hoe-jitsu), lol no I'm saying the best parts about our characters can help shape us sometimes without us even knowing it. (But Harumo-chan did help shape me Timmy, why can't you see that?) More power to you then. The best parts for some and the worser parts for others i suppose. :P
6½. What i mean to the last point is, part of my strength I've found is from when I draw strength from other strong characters I've seen and what they've been through; (or put you through and thus you're going through the sh*t-show together.) Characters that have really inspired me are probably namely Sora, Riku & Roxas from Kingdom Hearts, Nathan Drake from Uncharted, Sonic, and Yusei from Yugioh 5d's. I know, very adult of me right? Mm, I am interested however where others draw their strength from? Which form of medium do they choose, why did they choose it and who do they draw strength from if not in a show or game?
I could talk about why I choose these individual characters but I believe that's best suited for another thread/post. P.s. as for tv shows though? A huge inspiration i draw from is Rick, from the walking dead. I don't watch many new shows anymore. (As for why that is, maybe that's also best suited for another post.)
  1. Speaking of shows - I don't really have time to watch anime all that much but some influential ones I've grown to be very fond of are:
There are others, and I've seen all series of Yugioh and DragonBall alike, but these in particular stood out to me. For DragonBall Super mostly due to the absolute insanity the tournament of power was and that last fight. I've seen other animes or stopped, started and stopped again as I couldn't get invested into them. That's why Golden Time really took me by surprise. Same with Yugioh 5d's and S1 of Sword Art Online. I am interested to see what other subreddits with differing views on what sorts of animes other people prefer or recommend I watch.
Same with games, music or movies.
To wrap up,
Tldr; you can call me Timmy (Timmm-aH!) For short, or even shorter than short - dad, just don't get weird with it, (unless?...no I'm joking, unless?...) and I'm here like anyone else to peruse reddit on useful or entertaining things!
Anything else I'll either edit this big jumbo post or add on later!
Sincerely,
Dad.

2024.05.16 13:46 UofKentucky22 School starting!

The first 3 yrs of life is the most rapid development of the brain. Had C been involved in intensive therapy he would be much more advanced at this point. G was failed as a child but that makes most mother's want to provide the opposite! Yet C thankfully will be in school soon which is going to be a blessing for him and a thorn in her back side! C will get attention, education, structure, affection, socialization and much more! School will provide him interventions he needs but they will expect G/A to participate. The things that most of us do without thought they will have to now do! C will need to arrive at school on time. He will need to be in clean clothing and showered. He will need to be alert and awake at 8:00 a.m. He will need to have his papers filled out and signed and placed in a backpack everyday. Occasionally a project such as a family tree will need to be completed and turned in. I hope C is given to the the most seasoned teacher who has a zero tolerance for games. The school will instantly ask where or why he's not been in any program for along time..? They will ask who he is going to for his pediatrician and his vaccination records. They will want to know where is is seen for psychiatric care. Most importantly they will want the past evaluations for autism and all other evaluations. A IEP meeting will take place with a school counselor, a county therapist/psychiatrist, a teacher, a physical therapist and a OT and speech therapist! Buckle up G. Public school has federal guidelines they must meet and they must provide services to children in need! Most of us love these things because it gets our children all of the intervention and therapies they need to make them thrive! I suspect that G/A will struggle with all of the questioning and "meddling" they will do.. 🤣 What's y'all's thoughts on when he starts school? I think 🤔 her neglect will be evident to all of the professionals.

2024.05.16 07:41 globose2024 Exploring Face Image Datasets: Insights and Ethics

In the ever-evolving world of technology, face image datasets have emerged as a cornerstone for advancements in facial recognition, biometrics, and artificial intelligence. These datasets, collections of annotated facial images, are instrumental in training and evaluating algorithms for various applications, from security systems to personalized user experiences. This blog delves into the significance, types, challenges, and ethical considerations surrounding face image datasets.

Understanding Face Image Datasets

Face image datasets are curated collections of facial images, often accompanied by annotations such as facial landmarks, expressions, and identity labels. These datasets serve as the foundation for developing and refining algorithms in facial recognition, emotion detection, age estimation, and more. The diversity and quality of these datasets directly impact the performance and accuracy of the algorithms trained on them.

Expanding on Diversity and Representation

One of the critical challenges in creating face image datasets is ensuring they represent the global population’s diversity. This includes not only a range of ethnicities but also variations in age, gender, facial expressions, and environmental conditions. The lack of diversity can lead to biased algorithms that perform poorly for underrepresented groups. Efforts are being made to address this issue, such as the creation of more inclusive datasets like the Diversity in Faces (DiF) dataset by IBM.

Advancements in Dataset Creation and Annotation

Technological advancements have led to more sophisticated methods for dataset creation and annotation. For example, 3D face datasets, like the 300W-LP and Multi-PIE, provide more comprehensive data, including depth information and varying poses. Automated annotation tools, powered by AI, are also being developed to reduce the time and effort required for manual labeling, improving the accuracy and consistency of annotations.

The Role of Synthetic Data

Synthetic data is becoming increasingly important in addressing the limitations of real-world datasets. By using computer-generated images, researchers can create diverse and balanced datasets without privacy concerns. Additionally, synthetic data can be used to simulate challenging or rare scenarios, such as extreme lighting conditions or occlusions, which are crucial for testing the robustness of algorithms.

Ethical Frameworks and Regulations

As the use of face image datasets grows, so does the need for ethical frameworks and regulations to guide their creation and use. Organizations and governments are developing guidelines to ensure that facial recognition technologies are used responsibly. For instance, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) imposes strict rules on the processing of biometric data, including facial images.

Future Directions

The future of face image datasets lies in addressing their current limitations and ethical challenges. This includes creating more diverse and representative datasets, developing more efficient annotation tools, and ensuring that facial recognition technologies are used ethically and responsibly. Additionally, as privacy concerns continue to grow, the use of synthetic data and privacy-preserving techniques, such as federated learning, are likely to become more prevalent.

Types of Face Image Datasets

  1. Public Datasets: These are freely available for research and development purposes. Examples include the Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW), CelebA, and CASIA-WebFace.
  2. Private Datasets: Owned by organizations or companies, these datasets are often larger and more diverse but restricted in access due to privacy and proprietary concerns.
  3. Synthetic Datasets: Generated using computer graphics or deep learning techniques, these datasets can offer a controlled environment for specific scenarios not easily captured in real-world data.

Challenges in Face Image Datasets

  1. Diversity: Ensuring a dataset represents a wide range of ethnicities, ages, and expressions is crucial for developing unbiased algorithms.
  2. Privacy: With increasing concerns over data privacy, obtaining and using face images ethically and legally has become a significant challenge.
  3. Annotation Quality: Accurate annotations are vital for effective training, but manual labeling is time-consuming and prone to errors.

Applications of Face Image Datasets

Face image datasets are pivotal in various applications:
  1. Security and Surveillance: Enhancing security systems with facial recognition for identity verification and threat detection.
  2. Healthcare: Assisting in patient monitoring, diagnosing conditions, and personalizing treatment plans based on facial analysis.
  3. Entertainment and Media: Creating realistic digital avatars and enhancing user interaction in virtual reality and gaming.

Ethical Considerations

The use of face image datasets raises ethical concerns, including:
  1. Consent: Ensuring individuals in the datasets have given informed consent for their images to be used.
  2. Bias: Addressing potential biases in datasets that can lead to discriminatory outcomes in algorithms.
  3. Data Security: Protecting the privacy and security of individuals’ facial data from unauthorized access or misuse.

Conclusion

image annotation services are invaluable resources in the field of computer vision and artificial intelligence. Their applications span across various industries, from enhancing security measures to revolutionizing healthcare. However, the development and use of these datasets must be approached with caution, considering the ethical implications and challenges involved. As technology advances, the importance of diverse, high-quality, and ethically sourced face image datasets will continue to grow, shaping the future of facial recognition and beyond.

2024.05.16 04:03 Guti240400 I864 RFE

So, I got an RFE for I864. AOS applicant from spouse. We submitted my job (beneficiary) salary ($30k/yr) and savings account ($35k). The petitioner just started working a couple weeks ago so I had to include my income. However, the RFE indicated that I had to include proof of legally working in the US for me to include that income. They insist to show proof in some kind of work visa or legal documentation saying that I'm authorized to work here. I am a PhD student so I don't have any of those, just a regular F1. I did submit my F1 and paystubs from the university but I don't know why they are asking more proof of work authorization.
We only have one person that can help us as a joint sponsor. However, she makes around $25k/yr. If the poverty guidelines are around $30k for 3 people, do you think I should proceed on adding that person and hope for the best? Thanks for all your comments!!

2024.05.16 01:56 rparks89 Consolidation and loan help

Hello,
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I’m curious and couldn’t find a straight answer or maybe was not looking hard enough.
Here’s the TLDR: 1. Is there anything I can do about ITT loans that were consolidated in 2015? How can I tell if the loans were in fact discharged?
  1. Regarding consolidating my loans in 2015, do I need to consolidate anything else? Do I wait and see if they’re forgiven? When does the forgiveness time start?
Background and things to consider:
I consolidated loans back in 2015. All loans were subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans. All private loans have been paid off. Do I need to consolidate federal loans again? Do I just wait?
I had school loans consolidated from ITT Tech and Saint Francis University. This is before I knew ITT was in hot water. I see that many people have had ITT loans discharged because of the school closing. If I look within my loan servicer I see onsolidated loans that are from ITT. I graduated ITT in 2009 and went back to school in 2011. I graduated SFU in 2014. In 2015 I consolidated all my federal loans and paid the minimum under IDR at the same time paid extra on the private loans (from ITT) until they were paid off.
Note: I did enroll in the SAVE program.

OUSD (R&E) CRITICAL TECHNOLOGY AREA(S): Advanced Materials

The technology within this topic is restricted under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), 22 CFR Parts 120-130, which controls the export and import of defense-related material and services, including export of sensitive technical data, or the Export Administration Regulation (EAR), 15 CFR Parts 730-774, which controls dual use items. Offerors must disclose any proposed use of foreign nationals (FNs), their country(ies) of origin, the type of visa or work permit possessed, and the statement of work (SOW) tasks intended for accomplishment by the FN(s) in accordance with the Announcement. Offerors are advised foreign nationals proposed to perform on this topic may be restricted due to the technical data under US Export Control Laws.

OBJECTIVE: The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) seeks to promote responsive, best value supplies of related materials, components, and systems to Department of Defense (DoD) customers and other DoD stakeholders. DLA investigates advancements in technologies and business processes for new and improved materials, more efficient means of their production, and competitive domestic supply chains which will lead to greater innovation in current and future defense systems combined with benefits to other commercial and government applications.
DLA is interested in exploring future defense industrial base uses for scandium (Sc) because of its unique properties as a pure metal and, as an alloying agent, to significantly increase the performance of traditional aluminum (Al) alloys, and therefore expand the use of Al alloys. Further benefits include, substituting aluminum-scandium (Al-Sc) alloys for incumbent expensive materials (e.g., titanium) and/or replacing material forms that are both costly and difficult to source (e.g., forging, complex machined parts, and extrusions), as Al-Sc alloys are highly compatible with additive manufacturing techniques.
Scandium can impart high strength properties to Al alloys which allows for reduced weight designs (compared to traditional Al alloy) and components for a wide range of defense platforms and other military items. Al-Sc alloys exhibit increased resistance to high temperature and corrosion when compared to common Al alloys. Of further interest, is the high weldability of Al-Sc alloy. Alloys with high weldability can reduce manufacturing labor and other costs associated with joining components and structures. Al-Sc alloy can be especially useful when used as a powder or wire in additive manufacturing. Potential DoD applications for Al-Sc alloy include the production and sustainment of missiles, aircraft, space launch vehicles, satellites, solider systems, military ground vehicles, marine applications, and other weapon systems (e.g., small arms and artillery).
While Sc metal has many attractive material characteristics, its cost is frequently considered prohibitive for Al alloying purposes compared to other alloying elements. In addition, the supply of Sc metal and compounds is limited and highly concentrated in a small number of foreign countries including China and Russia. As such, there is reluctance to develop wide scale uses for Al-Sc alloys for many applications including DoD weapon systems and large-scale non-defense applications (e.g., commercial aviation and automotive manufacturing).

In the United States mining operations for Sc ore are being planned and developed to feed a domestic supply chain and, recently, new sources of Sc now exist in Canada (an important member country of DoD’s National Technology Industrial Base). There are also established defense industrial base companies and other businesses in both countries that can significantly contribute to development and commercialization of Al-Sc supply chains for both military and commercial applications.

Given the important properties of Sc, and in anticipation of increased affordable domestic supply, DLA is interested in engaging small businesses with the capability to develop and expand expertise and industrial base production capacity of Sc-containing materials, especially in areas relevant to the supply of Al-Sc alloy components for DoD end-uses.

Specific materials, processing and manufacturing areas of interest include:

  • Raw material refining
  • High purity Sc metals, compounds, and alloys
  • Additive manufacturing feedstock
  • Additively manufactured DoD systems prototype parts

Research and Development (R&D) efforts selected under this topic shall demonstrate and involve a degree of risk where the technical feasibility of the proposed work has not been fully established. Further, proposed efforts must be judged to be at a Technology and/or Manufacturing Readiness Level (TRL/MRL) 6 or less, but greater than TRL/MRL 3 to receive funding consideration.

TRL 3. (Analytical and Experimental Critical Function and/or Characteristic Proof of Concept)
TRL 6. (System/Subsystem Model or Prototype Demonstration in a Relevant Environment)

DESCRIPTION: DLA seeks SBIR project opportunities in new and innovative materials, processing, and manufacturing of Sc compounds, Sc metal, Al-Sc alloy and master alloys, and related areas of additive manufacturing. While Al and Sc are the primary metals of interest for this solicitation, it is anticipated that additional alloying elements may be included to tailor the final alloy properties. Specific areas of interest include:

  • Processing mining ores (and/or scrap waste streams) into high purity Sc compounds (ex., Sc-oxide) feedstock for production of pure Sc metal, Al-Sc alloy, master alloys, etc.
  • Commercial production of high purity Sc metal (domestic feedstock preferred)
  • Commercial production of Al-Sc alloy powder and wire for additive manufacturing
  • Demonstrating additively manufactured Al-Sc alloy parts for DoD weapon systems.

DLA seeks opportunities that include strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in Sc materials processing, as well as strong collaboration with traditional or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers. DLA similarly desires SBIR opportunities that include collaboration with interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organizations.

PROJECT DURATION and COST: Proposals exceeding these limits will not be evaluated.
PHASE I: Not to exceed a duration of 12 months and cost of $100,000.
PHASE II: Not to exceed a duration of 24 months and cost of $1,000,000.

PHASE I: Phase I will demonstrate proof of concept in one or more of the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing. A technology development and commercialization roadmap will be produced along with a preliminary business case analysis for transition and industrial scale up. Strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing is expected, along with involvement of one or more traditional or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers. Strong support from one or more interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organization required.

PHASE II: Depending on Phase I results, Phase II will consist of establishing pilot scale or low-rate production of technologies that are successfully demonstrated in Phase I. Additional activities may include further materials and processing testing, characterization, and data base development of related materials and processes that can be used by future producers of scandium materials of interest (e.g., compounds, metals, alloys, and master alloys as well as related additive manufacturing powders and wire, and fabricators of aluminum scandium end-items). Development of a detailed business case analysis and commercialization plan will be required.

Strong industry supply chain collaboration with established materials companies relevant to the above areas of interest in scandium materials and processing, along with involvement from traditional and/or non-traditional DoD weapon systems suppliers, is required, along with strong support from interested DoD weapon system program offices and/or relevant DoD RDT&E organizations.

Innovative materials and processes, and commercially viable sources of their supply, shall be developed with the goal to readily transition to production in support of DoD and its supply chains.
PHASE III DUAL USE APPLICATIONS: Phase III is any proposal that derives from, extends or completes a transition from a Phase I or II project. Phase III proposals will be accepted after the completion of Phase I and or Phase II projects.
There is no specific funding associated with Phase III, except Phase III is not allowed to use SBISTTR coded funding. Any other type of funding is allowed.
Phase III proposal Submission. Phase III proposals are emailed directly to DLA SBIR2@dla.mil. The PMO team will set up evaluations and coordinate the funding and contracting actions depending on the outcome of the evaluations. A Phase III proposal should follow the same format as Phase II for the content and format. There are, however, no limitations to the amount of funding requested, or the period of performance. All other guidelines apply.

Transition Plan
  1. Period of Performance: TBD

  1. Conclusions Noting that AA7075-T6 is widely used by both fixed- and rotary-wing military aircraft, as well as in space structures, the initial objective of this study was to directly compare crack growth in identical AA7075-T6 and Scalmalloy specimens tested in the same servohydraulic facility under the same stresses and by the same operators. The experimental data reveal that Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems AM-built Scalmalloy appears to be more damage tolerant than the conventionally built aluminium alloy AA7075-T6. As a result, Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems printed Scalmalloy would appear to be particularly attractive for use on a range of military aircraft, as well as for space applications. It also highlights the potential for Boeing Space, Intelligence, and Weapons Systems Scalmalloy to be used to extend the operational lives of military aircraft through the on-demand printing of limited life Scalmalloy replacement parts. The results of this initial test program have led to the hypothesis that the da/dN versus ∆K curves associated with Scalmalloy and conventionally built AA2024-T3 should be similar. This hypothesis was, subsequently, validated by comparison to AA2024-T3 da/dN versus ∆K curves taken from the Nasgro database. This observation subsequently led to the conjecture that the small crack da/dN versus ∆K curves associated with Scalmalloy and AA2024-T3, which are needed for a durability analysis, should be similar. If this hypothesis can be confirmed, then given that: (i) Scalmalloy has a yield stress significantly greater than that of AA2024-T3; (ii) AA2024-T3 is widely used in both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft; (iii) MIL-STD-1530D mandates that there must be no yield at 100% DLL and the US Joint Services Structural Guidelines JSSG2006 states that there should be no yield at 115% DLL, the use of Scalmalloy for both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, and drones would appear to be very attractive. As such, the next stage in the study will involve the determination of valid upper bound da/dN versus ∆K curves for the growth of short cracks in AA2024-T3.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (August 14, 2023) – A phased program to establish U.S. commercial production of aluminum-scandium (“AlSc”) master alloy took another step forward recently as NioCorp Developments Ltd. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:NB) (TSX:NB) and its development partner Nanoscale Powders LLC (“Nanoscale”) successfully produced scandium metal at pilot-scale at a facility owned and operated by Creative Engineers in Pennsylvania.
The next step in the pilot-scale program is to produce kilogram-sized ingots of AlSc master alloy for independent testing and commercial product samples. The first of these AlSc master alloy ingots is expected to be produced in the coming weeks.

Three-Phase Commercialization Program

NioCorp and Nanoscale are pursuing a three-phased development plan for commercial production of AlSc master alloy. The goal of this program is to achieve full-scale AlSc master alloy production at approximately the same time as the Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project (the “Elk Creek Project”) achieves commercial operation and planned production of approximately 100 tonnes per year of scandium oxide.
  1. Pilot scale batch production of 10 kilogram master alloy ingots**. Master alloy produced will be fully analyzed (metals and gases) at independent test facilities. Ingot samples will be available for third-party examination and prospective customer testing / sampling.**
  2. Commercial demonstration production of 100 kg ingots**. NioCorp expects to perform this work at a third-party ingot casting facility, which is expected to significantly reduce development timelines and cost as well as leverage existing facility permits and operator experience. The objective of this stage will be to optimize the production process and operating conditions.**
  3. Full scale commercial production of master alloy**. Assuming successful results at the pilot scale and commercial demonstration stages, and once project financing is obtained, NioCorp intends to secure an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contractor to construct, start up, and commission a full-scale production facility with the capacity to consume up to the Elk Creek Project’s projected scandium production of approximately 100 tonnes (Sc metal contained in master alloy) per year. NioCorp intends to co-locate the full-scale production facility with the Elk Creek Project in Nebraska in order to take advantage of the infrastructure (i.e., low-cost power, water, and natural gas) that will be in place for mining operations.**
NioCorp and Nanoscale also plan to develop recycling approaches for scrap alloy, including work-in-process material and post-production scrap.

***SEE RESPONSES FROM NIOCORP/JIM SIMS FROM AUGUST 14, 2023 ~Good morning - Jim!

While waiting for Niocorp’s 2023 F.S. Release… The announcement for Scandium Alloy Production & Scandium alloy funding are most welcome!

Leading me to add to my line of questions regarding Scandium & (Niocorp).

A) Would Niocorp qualify for a portion of this recent funding once approved by Congress? Moving forward.
RESPONSE:

"This funding was placed in the FY24 DoD Appropriations bill at the request of Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, for the purpose of helping to fund NioCorp's effort to establish domestic commercial production of AlSc master alloy. There is always a process within the DoD to select appropriate projects with funding provided to it by Congress. In this case, however, the House and Senate Armed Services Committees provided additional guidance to DoD on this topic in their respective National Defense Authorization bills, including prioritizing domestic production of such materials. "

Next Question ~ For context:

(Imperial mining, CleanTech, & Scandium International all have patents on Scandium & Sc aluminum alloy products. Rio Tinto has established a North American domestic supply(@15 tons/year with expansion capabilities) & has established a working relationship with Boeing.
Niocorp has produced Scandium aluminum with both IBC (under Chris Huskamp now with Jabil) & with Ames Lab, but has yet to patent any process or materials.
Niocorp has established a working relationship with Nanoscale to produce patentable Scandium Aluminum products in the years ahead…)
Jim-
B) How Does/will Niocorp’s expected Scandium production & future patentable Scandium materials be utilized by management moving forward? Once realized…. ; and How do/would they compare to those materials & alloys already developed or patented?
RESPONSE:

"Latent markets for scandium oxide and aluminum-scandium master alloy – both commercial and military -- are quite large, and we are working with a number of potential scandium consumers and related technology companies interested in scandium. We will make announcements in this area as developments require. In general, we don’t comment on detailed commercial business strategies except in the course of necessary announcements and/or public filings. "

C) In addition to Niocorp’s collaboration with NanoScale. Is Niocorp currently working/engaged with other entities such as (Ames Lab, DoD, DoE, Chris Huskamp/Jabil & others) on Scandium Materials/patents?
Or on Niobium, Titanium, or Rare Earth future products (Oxides, Magnets…)
Please comment where possible.
RESPONSE:

"There are multiple such engagements ongoing now for each product in our planned product offering. In general, we don’t comment on commercial business strategies except in the course of necessary announcements and/or public filings. "

D) Are other Entities besides EXIM Bank and Stellantis still interested as possible Debt/Equity finance or Anchor Investos partners moving foward?
Leading to a Final Elk Creek Finance package?
RESPONSE:

"YES!"

The committee recognizes that China is a major producer of high-purity scandium oxide, which has many powerful applications in defense technologies, including strengthening and light-weighting defense and commercial aviation systems. As scandium oxide pro-duction is established in the United States, a missing supply chain component is the conversion of scandium from its oxide form to aluminum-scandium (AlSc) master alloy. This process step is required for utilization of U.S.-mined scandium by many defense applications. At present, production capacity of AlSc master alloy is limited to one facility in the United States. The committee recognizes that the United States may soon become a major producer of highpurity scandium oxide by virtue of a proposed mine and mineral processing project in Nebraska. The committee recognizes the defense-wide importance of a vertical domestic supply chain for both Scandium Oxide and AlSc master alloy and the critical importance of both materials for the production of air-, land-, and sea-based combat systems.

Uneasy Glances in the War Department Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections
Colonel James M. Gavin shifted uncomfortably in his seat at the War Department and closed his eyes tightly to block out the pressure he felt building up in his head. Opening them, he continued to read the newspaper sprawled out on his mahogany desk:
PRESIDENT LA FOLLETTE ACQUITTED IN IMPEACHMENT TRIAL
RUMORS OF SHAKE-UP WITHIN ADMINISTRATION AND MORE OPPOSITION ARRESTS ABOUND
In a rare moment of outward fury for the normally stoic soldier, Gavin crumpled the newspaper and threw it across his Pentagon staff office. He had already read the thing twice over to make sure he hadn’t missed anything the first time. To read it again would just be an exercise in making himself even more depressed. Colonel Gavin stood up and walked to the office window and looked out. Summer was rapidly dying and Fall was taking root, already some of the leaves on the trees were turning to new, vibrant colors. His office with the Strategic Plans Department was on the Eastern side of the Pentagon and offered him a view of the gently flowing Potomac River and into Washington DC itself. On clear days, such as today, he could even see the needle of the Washington Monument sticking triumphantly high into the sky. On other days the view might have filled him with pride, but today all he felt was dread. Looking over the Potomac he tried to make out where the White House would be. What was going on in there right now? Was the President and his gang of fascist jackals working out their next plan to strip away American democracy or disappear another political opponent at this very moment? Was this what he had fought for? What so many of his comrades in arms had died for?
He thought back. Gavin had always wanted to be a soldier. He was not born into some political dynasty or with a silver spoon in his mouth, no, he had to work for everything he wanted. He had been an orphan and whatever free time he had was devoted to work. Whether as a paperboy or a barbers assistant caring for the miners in his poor Pennsylvania town, he was always working. He knew he had to get out. Listening to his school teachers' lectures about the Civil War and the stories of discharged veterans from the Canadian front opened his eyes to the world outside coal mining and poverty. He knew had to be a soldier. The Americans who went off to fight in these wars were heroes to him, they did not fight for riches, they fought for what was good, decent, honorable, and righteous. Democracy. The thought was the only thing that kept him going when he had to get up before the crack of dawn, when he had to give up on making friends, and when his adoptive father forced him to drop out of school in 8th grade to work full time. He had his break when the Revolution began in 1921 and at only 15 years old he ran from home to join an anti-communist militia marching off to liberate New York City. Gavin was filled with pride as they marched off to battle and sang old marching tunes as well as praises for the newly inaugurated President Lejeune. Wearing a shabby, worn-out uniform a kind Sergeant had given to him, and using an old hunting rifle, he fought through the streets of the Big Apple alongside Patton’s regulars and the collaborationist bastard Hugh Johnson. The irony of the fact he had been fighting against Benjamin Gitlow, who now seemed to have been the last best hope of democracy in the United States, did not escape Colonel Gavin.
Federal troops enter the Bronx Soviet in May 1922. A young Gavin first saw combat here in the brutal urban warfare of the Revolution while fighting in an anti-communist militia
He had proved himself in the Revolution, enough to stay in with the Pennsylvania National Guard as a Corporal and fight the insurrectionist remnants with distinction until 1924 when one of his superior officers decided he might cut it as an officer and got him an appointment to West Point. The Academy was hard, but he was used to dealing with challenges so he was up at 4:30 every morning to try and catch up on the basic education he had been forced out of as a boy. After graduation, he got to serve on the far frontiers of American global reach where he witnessed brutality not seen since the Revolution, except this time it was not undisciplined militias or renegade Japanese collaborators, but regular United States Federal troops. Confronted by the reality of the crimes committed by a few notable Caribbean officers in the Moroland shook his faith in what he was fighting for, but still, he persisted. Those men were in the minority and their actions brought shame to the military as a whole, even as the politicians back home lauded them or helped to cover it up. It was then he first began to notice the uneasy glances shared between servicemen as they read the newspapers or talked about the events in hushed tones. At the time they were few, and no one was outspoken, but still, Gavin had noticed. When a new Pacific War broke out, all of that was forgotten as the Army of the Free marched off once more to battle. Good god, Guadalcanal had been so hot and the Japanese had been so fierce. As one of the masterminds behind the Airborne Corps, it was only right that he once more serve on the frontlines with his men and so he made every combat jump the 82nd Airborne conducted during the war. Gavin had fought in every major battle and watched as the men around him were maimed, mutilated, and murdered by a vicious enemy in a war of aggression he was beginning to lose faith in.
Theater-Ranked Brigadier General Gavin preparing to make a combat jump into Guadalcanal in late 1942 with his beloved \"All-American\" 82nd Airborne Division
He was off the coast of Iwo Jima, on board an aircraft carrier for a planning conference on the invasion of Japan, when the room suddenly turned white with the flash of the nuclear bomb. In an instant, 75,000 soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, sons, brothers, fathers, and husbands were vaporized by the deadliest weapon known to mankind. A follow-up attack on Guam was just as bad. What had they died for? Democracy. It had to be something as just and noble as that. To spread democracy and bring peace to the Pacific. Right? The atomic bombings of Japan followed soon after.
Because of the nature of the Japanese defeat, the collapsed central government was unable to stop the raging fires, set up food distribution, or stop the roaming bandits in large swathes of the country. To counter this, an immediate American occupation was needed to restore order, end the famine, and set up a provisional government. The planning for the airborne contingent of this action, entitled Operation Eastern Wind, was left in the capable hands of theater-ranked Major General James Gavin. Eastern Wind would include massive amphibious landings across the Japanese Isles, preluded by the largest airborne drop the war had seen pinpointed outside major cities to secure vital infrastructure as the seaborne troops and equipment arrived. In a personal victory during planning, Gavin had used the loss of personnel on Iwo Jima and Guam to argue for the integration of all-black paratroop units into the rest of the Airborne Corps to bolster numbers before the big jump. Then in early September 1945, the skies over Japan were once again filled with the roaring sounds of American engines as thousands of paratroopers jumped from their transports to begin the occupation of Japan. Jumping into the icy vacuum one more time, Gavin landed on the outskirts of Tokyo and was the highest-ranking American officer in Japan for about two hours before the rest of the Army hit the beaches. As he and whatever men landed near him advanced on a railroad depot where he planned to set up his headquarters, they were horrified to find it had become an open-air hospital and mass grave for Japanese civilians caught in the Tokyo atomic bombing. The horrific stench of rotting corpses and gangrenous infected innocents permeated the air and Gavin’s first instinct was to vomit and shield his eyes. But as a soldier, and especially a soldier who was good, decent, honorable, and righteous, he instead directed the creation of an aid station along with an operational headquarters to assist the beleaguered Japanese doctors and nurses. Over the next few months in Japan, Gavin saw the extent of the destruction wrought in the name of ‘democracy’. When the final tally of over 2.5 million civilian casualties, was released he believed it. The Japanese people had suffered greatly, so he could only hope that peace would hold out when he received new orders to head the innovative Strategic Plans Department back in Washington DC at the end of 1946.
Operation Eastern Wind, directed by Theater-Ranked Major General Gavin, would see the largest airborne drop of the war as the American military began its occupation of Japan. The landings would meet no formal Japanese resistance and allowed for the quick seizure of vital infrastructure across the country. American troops encountered firsthand the effects of the nuclear attacks, the subsequent famine, wildfires, and governmental collapse.
Bumped back down to a peacetime rank, Gavin continued to climb the ladder arguing for the modernization and integration of the armed forces. He tried to readjust to peacetime service and revert to how he had served all the other presidential administrations, but something was different about La Follette. Gavin had initially viewed him positively, seeing as he had been a soldier in the Pacific before rising to the highest office, but that quickly changed with the appointment of MacArthur as Secretary of State and the dictatorial nature of the Administration in occupied Japan. As the years passed, Gavin noticed a rise in the uneasy glances he had not seen since the Moroland warcrimes had been revealed. Officers reading their newspapers would shoot a look at their comrades before receiving a knowing and acknowledging look back. Pre-briefing meetings often took an off-topic turn as someone would bring up current events and the whispers and hushed voices began. Perhaps someone would bring up the actions of the Black Shirts and reminisce about their actions during the Revolution and how the revolutionary militias and extremist fascists seemed awfully similar. Sometimes the room would go silent when an Administration appointee or outwardly supportive serviceman would walk in and the huddled soldiers would quickly and quietly disperse. Still, it was business as usual in the Pentagon and on all the bases that Gavin would visit on tours. Then the chaos of the 1948 Farmer-Labor Convention happened, followed by the streetfighting, followed by the reelection of the President, the arrests of political opponents, and the revelations preceding the impeachment attempt. Slowly but surely the number of disaffected servicemen rose with each incident and some commanders were beginning to give uncomfortable, but necessary, reminders to their men on the apolitical nature of the military and its members, even if they were beginning to lose faith in that too.
The Pentagon was abuzz with quiet discontent. Even if it was unconfirmed it was clear to most servicemen that Lindbergh and La Follette had murdered General Smedley Butler or were at the very least deeply involved in the cover-up. Once again paramilitary forces were roaming the streets of America. Once again opponents of a political philosophy were in real, mortal danger. Once again American democracy was under threat from the inside. Gavin’s generation of servicemen had marched off to war to fight for something that the La Follette administration did not care about. The current Officer Corps of the United States Military idolized Smedley Butler and John Lejeune and every affront against their names and legacies was duly, but as of yet silently, noted. The Lower Enlisted and especially Non-Commissioned Officer Corps also looked on at the proceedings with great interest as it seemed that their sacrifices in the Revolution and Pacific War were being forgotten and their authority handed over to a bunch of undisciplined and hyper-partisan Black Shirts. The uneasy glances abounded in the War Department. Outspoken fascists and La Follette supporters who seemed to have forgotten their oaths were increasingly shunned and effectively exiled by their comrades and superior officers.
James M. Gavin took a step back from the window and sneered. I cannot believe that disgrace Batista came in second he thought. Looking out at the skyline of the home of sacred American democracy, it very suddenly became very clear that the union was approaching a precipice. It was quite possible that the Administration might call upon the military to enforce its will should they take a step to alter the very fabric of the United States. If and when that time comes… what would the military’s response be? Not the reaction from the higher-ups, the ones appointed by the politicians, but the reaction from the men? The Officers and Enlisted who had watched their buddies die overseas as they fought for some vague notion of advancing the cause of freedom? The Officers and Enlisted who had set out to defend America during the Revolution? Personally, Gavin knew what he would do, and he had a general feeling about what the rest of the men of the military might do. But the revelation had forced the thought into his mind and he knew he would never be able to shake it again. He sat down at his desk once again and began to outline a list of names. Once he had finished, he looked it over again, committed it to memory, took out his lighter, and burned the paper. He would set about doing what he did best. Organizing and planning. He wasn’t sure just how paranoid the Administration was, but he would leave no paper trail, only speak to those he was absolutely sure he knew the sentiments of, and take every precaution as he made feelers. Too much was at risk. Too many had died. Too many had sacrificed. Too many who naively believed that their bloodshed would not be in vain and that their superiors in the government were also good, decent, honorable, and righteous. James M. Gavin would do whatever he could to remind Washington that there were still patriots willing to fight for a worthy cause. And if necessary, die for it. Democracy.

2024.05.16 00:02 Pas-de-Chat Questions for Dairy Farmers about Avian Influenza

Greetings all. A few hopefully respectful questions from a non-farmer, and a mostly plant-based eater.
I have been on a bit of a personal journey to understand more about our food system. Most modern humans outside of farmers and ranchers are entirely separated from the production of both the plants and animals they consume, and this disconnect IMHO is a primary source of societal behavioral distortions and negative impacts that we are seeing all around us -- to human health, to the environment, to animals, & even to our own spirits/morality.
Anyway, long intro, but as a part of this journey I have been following the news on avian influenza. I live in a county in Northern California with deep ag roots, and where we had a major outbreak of avian flu last year.
Then, there came the recent news that avian influenza viral particles have been found in 20% of the milk supply out there on the shelves. I find this pretty alarming...
Even if pasteurization prevents the virus from being viable and makes non-raw milk products "safe" to consume, this striking announcement does mean that avian flu is now spreading - potentially extensively - in the US dairy cow population, not just in poultry farms. Killing the virus in the final product meant for human consumption does nothing to negate the issue that the virus is spreading out there at dairies, and very likely increasing.
Given that the mortality rate of avian flu for humans among known cases in past outbreaks was around 50% (that comes from a WHO publication) it feels like we are playing with fire here.
It's like we haven't learned any of the lessons from the past pandemic -- about better monitoring, reporting, and communicating to the people. Given the average person's lack of agency around their food sourcing, we are expected to trust our regulators, as well as those who are producing our food. But it is not clear the political and personal economic interests operating in the market align with broader public health. Even more troublesome is that we haven't seemed to learn our lesson about the power of zoonotic viruses to seriously f*ck with us if they have the opportunity to mutate.
The more animals out there that are infected (be they cows, farmed birds, wild birds, whatever), and the closer these animals are to each other both physically and genetically (as what happens in industrial animal ag) -- then the chances increase for the avian flu virus to mutate into something much more dangerous. It could become something that more easily hops to humans, it could become deadlier for animals or humans, or even possibly all of the above, god help us.
I have spent a little bit of time on the USDA, CDC, and FDA websites related to avian flu, and I am disappointed & shocked at how little public information about infected cows and herds is available. All that is provided is the state, the type of animal infected, and the date the testing was confirmed by the feds. And what information is there most likely has a significant delay - given all of the bureaucratic hurdles and procedures around testing and reporting and whatnot.
***** Which brings me to my three questions for you milk producers. (Thank you if you have read this far, and thank you in advance for whatever you feel like sharing.)
  1. Testing & Reporting: There is a recent USDA order requiring avian flu testing of dairy cows that are moving between states. But, at least at the federal level, there are no mandatory testing requirements if cows are not being moved from state to state. Also, as I read it, testing isn't even mandatory if a cow appears sick -- in that case the language the USDA uses is around recommended testing and biosecurity guidelines. (I assume that many states have added their own layers of requirements in addition to the Federal, so this is where I need help.).
So, my question here is about what actually happens on the ground, how avian flu testing and reporting happens for the dairy farmers here. Do you voluntarily test periodically? Do you live in a place that requires it? How does reporting work?
  1. Disposal of Infected Milk: Given that milk that has been contaminated by avian flu can't technically be sold, I assume that it in an ideal world it is first pasteurized and then disposed of. Because if it were to be dumped in the environment, it has the potential to be a major vector for the spread of avian flu to lots of other kinds of animals. There are reported cases of other animals dying that drank raw milk infected with avian flu. The USDA, again, like the testing issue, does not require how milk should be disposed of -- it just has recommendations.
So, what do you (or others in your industry) do with infected milk? Do your states have additional requirements the USDA does not?
  1. Overall Industry Feelings about Avian Flu: Finally, I am curious what people who are working in the dairy industry feel about avian flu. Is there increasing concern? Does what I wrote above resonate, or do you think I am overreacting?
Thanks again...

2024.05.15 21:21 ColdInMinnesooota Muckraker Exposes Chinese Illegal Alien Black Market Employment Scheme

This story demonstrates how things are really working with the whole asylum situation: (and why you are being lied to - again painfully obvious)
(why is this posted here? because immigration is a centrist issue - one of the top issues being ignored / gaslighted upon, and it's this gaslighting which could make or break this erection)
-How the existing asylum law is being taken advantage of for economic migrants (duh)
-How many who aren't supposed to work are while they are supposed to wait for hearings, but still do (duh)
-How this drives down wages even further - these kinds of migrants will take lower quotas just to get work, screwing legitimate citizens who want to do this legitimately.
delivery jobs like this used to pay pretty well - enough that you could do this ft and make over 25 an hour doing it. (minus equipment costs, meaning profit) now - not so much. pay has gone to "if you are desperate" wages basically.
-This is basically how the small time home remodeling / construction industry was gutted of american workers the past 20 years. Now your foreman basically does the same thing this guy does - (foreman an american, employing illegals through various means, sometimes taking a cut, sometimes not.)

So many people on this sub (is this a neoliberal sub now?) deny the above, for reasons I don't know what. No one is against immigration - but large numbers of illegal immigration does impact american wages, which no one - not even the democrat party - seems to care about.
And no, the bill offered by the democrats merely legitimzed what's going on currently - a situation created by Biden, which he could change if he wanted to. (and no - i'm not a trump fan, but Trump will be getting a lot of votes because of shit and denial like the above)

(edit, in responses to some of the people misrepresenting things)
what has biden done differently? he instituted "catch and release" -ie, get caught, apply for "asylum" and released inside the USA - this IS new and a way of getting in.
a good article on this, which refutes many of the people misrepresenting the situation. (not biden's fault - yes, it is. "bipartisan immigration bill" - no, it really wasn't AT ALL, let alone supported enough to be voted upon. just because you can get one republican to sign onto it doesn't make it "bipartisan", except in technicalities.
"The cause of the current crisis is President Joe Biden’s unprecedented refusal to enforce federal immigration law, which requires that all asylum-seekers be detained rather than released into the United States. The solution, therefore, is for Biden to start enforcing federal law as he is constitutionally required to do—or for Congress to deny the president something else he wants until he does."
"In truth, the reason why there are so many aliens to detain is because word has gotten out that if you come and request asylum, you’ll be released into the U.S.—and this has been the case since Biden took office. As Judge Wetherell put it in a 2023 immigration case, the Biden administration’s actions have been “akin to posting a flashing ‘Come In, We’re Open’ sign on the southern border.” As word has spread, the numbers at the border have massively increased, with the most recent month on record (December 2023) being the worst month to date."
"Even apart from aiding terrorists, drug-smugglers, and the like, the effects of Biden’s refusal to enforce federal law have been profound. According to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in less than three years under Biden, the United States’s foreign-born population over the age of 16 rose by 5 million (from 43,086,000 in January 2021 (Table A-7) to 48,049,000 in December 2023). That’s enough to populate a new Los Angeles, Miami, and Washington, D.C. combined."
this article also goes into how the new "compromise" bill was terrible, and basically took the current situation and made it permanent:
https://www.city-journal.org/article/a-border-crisis-by-design
oh, and lastly:
"Why is Biden releasing millions of illegal aliens into the U.S.? Because he thinks that his notion of “equity”—which he extends to non-U.S. citizens—requires it. On his first day in office, Biden issued an executive order declaring that his administration would pursue a policy of “advancing equity for all, including people of color and others who have been historically underserved, marginalized, and adversely affected by persistent poverty and inequality.” In a subsequent document, DHS quoted that passage from Biden and made clear that it was applying it “[i]n the immigration and enforcement context.”
In other words, the situation at the border is by design. What most Americans think of as a “crisis,” the Biden administration regards as a success."
i always thought "equity" was a bs term made by the right, not to be taken seriously - however in this context IT IS. it's partly why they are being released.
and lastly, try searching for this on google and it's heavily manipulated - it takes a good while of finding relevant articles explaining the specifics of why this bill has bad provisions, or why illegals are now coming in greater numbers than before. google search manipulation is so ridiculous and biased

She caused the merchandise to get out of control and nothing is being done about it. If you lived in Augusta you could call the pro shop and they would bring your order to the guard gate any time you had a guest come to town. After Martha protest was held. They were required to only operate with the public one week out of the year, tournament week. The whole issue was women and federal laws which prevented them from selling all year long. I believe you could go on line as well, Please correct me if im wrong. Even thou they have meet all federal guidelines, they are still holding to the strict merchandising policies. Well,it runs the price up on everything !!! I hope they Change it back and close the black market,

2024.05.15 17:41 como365 Food Bank Market embodies new trends in battling hunger

Food Bank Market embodies new trends in battling hunger
It takes more than food to end hunger.
That’s the core belief of Katie Martin, founder and CEO of More Than Food Consulting. Martin has dedicated three decades to research, consulting and organizing with food banks, pantries and community organizations to address hunger at its root causes.
“Food insecurity is rooted in poverty and systemic injustices that make it difficult for certain groups of people to be able to thrive,” Martin said.
Martin, who is based in Connecticut and works with food banks nationwide, advocates for food banks and pantries where those in need not only have access to healthier foods but also have the freedom to choose their own items, as well as encouraging organizations to include wraparound services such as health care and nutrition education.
In Columbia, this innovative model exists within The Food Bank Market, part of the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri. Open since November, The Food Bank Market goes beyond distributing food.
The recently built, multi-million dollar location has a grocery store-like structure. Those who use the service, whom The Food Bank Market refers to as “neighbors,” have the freedom to choose any item from a wide selection of food groups based on the size of their household.
Additionally, the market partners with various organizations like Chance for Children, the Spay and Neuter Project and Compass Health to provide health care, nutrition classes and aid in navigating resources.
“Food insecurity doesn’t happen in a bubble, and we know that when people are experiencing need for food, they’re probably experiencing need for other things as well,” said Katie Adkins, director of communications for the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri. “So we’re really lucky in that we have that space that can host some of those additional services.”
Through its newly created resource navigator, the Food Bank Market works to connect neighbors with services not provided on-site.
“If we have a neighbor who comes in and notes that they’re having challenges getting fresh nutritious food for their family, but they’re also having a hard time with transportation or they’re having a hard time getting diapers for their baby, our resource navigator can help them find different resources for each of those challenges that they might be facing,” Adkins said.
Martin said at least one other city has a model similar to the Food Bank Market, and others may be following. In Ohio, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s Community Resource Center connects the food bank with 14 non-profit partners, ranging from mobile aid to career counseling to affordable housing, to create a “one-stop shop” that tackles the root causes of food insecurity, according to its website.
The root causes of hunger are perpetuated by inadequate wages, underemployment and disinvestment in certain communities, said Alexandra Ashbrook, director of WIC and Root Causes for the Food Research and Action Center based in Washington, D.C. Particularly, Black, Latino and Native American families face the most disparity as “they may be experiencing multiple root causes at the same time,” Ashbrook said.
An additional step in achieving food security are federal assistance programs such as SNAP, WIC and Summer EBT, a debit card provided to children who qualify for free or reduced lunch to use at SNAP participating retailers during the summer. Advocates are hoping Congress will pass the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024, which is pending in the Senate. The act would “provide additional tax credits to about 16 million children and it would lift an estimated 400,000 children above the poverty line,” which is important as hunger and poverty go hand-in-hand, Ashbrook said.
Programs like SNAP provide an extra line of defense against hunger alongside food banks. According to Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, which includes the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, for every one meal provided by a partner food bank, SNAP provides nine.
“And these programs are the safety net that really helps improve food security and health,” Ashbrook said, “as fabulous as the charitable network is, they can’t solve hunger alone.”
While a variety of resources are available on both local and federal levels to address food insecurity, the stigma of using food service programs may turn people away from taking full advantage of them.
“I think as human beings, it’s hard to ask for help. It’s hard to accept help and there’s a lot of pride,” Martin said, “there’s kind of this old mentality of you pull yourself up by your bootstraps and you’re able to provide for your family.”
To combat the stigma, Martin encourages people who have used food services to share their stories. “I think the more that we can shed light on how much it impacts, I mean, it’s like 1-in-10 Americans are struggling with food insecurity. How can we break down those stereotypes and the ideas,” Martin said.
The Missourian attempted to get first-hand testimony about services at The Food Bank Market, but neighbors contacted at the Market were unwilling to speak. Talking about the challenge can be “really, really hard for people,” Adkins said.
Providing neighbors with a comfortable experience through The Food Bank Market is part of making asking for help easier.
“Any day that, you know, you can walk into the market and have a good shopping experience and then have somebody help you bag your groceries and chat with you a little bit or ask if there are other local resources we might be able to connect you with,” Adkins said, “we think that’s a good outcome.”

One amendment would lower the minimum vote threshold to elect Mayor or councilors from 50% (approved by voters in 2013) to 40%. 2024.05.15 12:50 Remote-Cartoonist460 FHA Loans for Affordable Homeownership

FHA Loans for Affordable Homeownership
An FHA loan, backed by the Federal Housing Administration, is a popular mortgage option designed to make homeownership accessible and more affordable, especially for first-time home buyers. Since its inception in 1934, the FHA has provided a safety net for lenders by insuring loans, thus encouraging them to extend credit to a broader range of applicants.
Affordable Homeownership - owntic
What is an FHA Loan?
An FHA loan is a type of mortgage that the Federal Housing Administration insures. This insurance reduces the risk for lenders, making it easier for borrowers with less-than-perfect credit scores or limited funds for a down payment to qualify for a mortgage. The key benefits of an FHA loan include:
Low Down Payment: FHA loans require a minimum down payment of just 3.5%, making it easier for first-time buyers to save enough to purchase a home.
Flexible Credit Requirements: Borrowers with credit scores as low as 580 can qualify for an FHA loan with the minimum down payment. Those with scores between 500-579 may also qualify, but they must make a 10% down payment.
Assumable Mortgages: FHA loans are assumable, meaning that when you sell your home, the buyer can take over your existing FHA mortgage, potentially benefiting from your lower interest rate.
Types of FHA Loans
The FHA offers various loan programs to meet different needs:
FHA 203(b) Loan: This is the standard FHA loan for purchasing a home. It offers low down payment options and flexible credit guidelines.
FHA 203(k) Renovation Loan: This loan combines the cost of purchasing a home with the cost of making repairs or improvements, ideal for buying homes that need significant work.
HUD Homes Program: Targets foreclosed homes, offering them at substantial discounts. Some HUD homes require the standard 3.5% down payment, while others can be purchased with as little as $100 down.
Good Neighbor Next Door: Designed for public service professionals such as teachers, police officers, and firefighters, this program offers HUD homes at a 50% discount in exchange for living in the home for at least three years.
FHA Streamline Refinance: Allows current FHA loan holders to refinance with minimal paperwork and without needing a new appraisal.
FHA Cash-Out Refinance: Enables homeowners to convert home equity into cash, subject to loan limits and other requirements.
FHA Loan Limits and Mortgage Insurance
FHA loans have specific limits that vary by region. For single-family homes, the loan limits range from $498,257 to $1,149,825 in high-cost areas.
FHA loans also require mortgage insurance, which includes:
Upfront Mortgage Insurance Premium (UFMIP): Typically 1.75% of the loan amount, paid at closing or rolled into the loan.
Annual Mortgage Insurance Premium (MIP): Paid monthly, the rate varies based on the loan term, loan amount, and down payment size. For instance, a 30-year FHA mortgage with a 3.5% down payment has a 0.55% annual MIP rate.
Comparing FHA Loans to Other Mortgage Options
FHA vs. Conventional Loans: Conventional loans, backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, typically require higher credit scores and larger down payments but do not mandate mortgage insurance if the down payment is 20% or more. Conversely, FHA loans are more lenient on credit requirements and allow for lower down payments, making them attractive for first-time buyers or those with limited credit history.
FHA vs. USDA Loans: USDA loans, backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are designed for rural and suburban homebuyers and require no down payment. However, they have stricter eligibility criteria, including location and income limits. FHA loans are more broadly available and do not have such geographic restrictions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are FHA loans available in all states?
Yes, FHA loans are available nationwide.
Can I use gift funds for my down payment?
Yes, FHA loans allow the entire down payment to come from a gift.
Are FHA mortgages assumable?
Yes, FHA loans can be transferred to a new buyer, which can make your home more attractive if interest rates rise.
Can I refinance my FHA loan?
Yes, you can refinance through the FHA Streamline Refinance program, which simplifies the process and doesn't require a new appraisal.
Is a higher down payment required for multi-unit properties?
No, FHA loans require the same 3.5% down payment for multi-unit properties as they do for single-family homes.
FHA loans provide a flexible, accessible path to homeownership, especially for first-time buyers or those with lower credit scores. By understanding the different FHA programs and their benefits, prospective homeowners can find a suitable option to meet their needs and financial situations.

FAQs
Do I have to put 20% down?
No, while 20% avoids PMI, many buyers put down between 3-13%.
What is the 20% down rule?
It’s a common guideline to avoid PMI, but not a requirement. Various loan programs allow for lower down payments.
Is it better to make a large down payment?
It depends on your financial situation. A large down payment reduces monthly payments and avoids PMI but isn’t always feasible.
How can I avoid PMI without 20% down?
Options include lender-paid mortgage insurance, piggyback loans, or specific no-PMI loans, often with higher interest rates.
What are the benefits of putting 20% down?
Benefits include lower loan amounts, no PMI, and lower monthly payments.
Is it OK to put 10% down?
Yes, many first-time buyers do this, though it will result in higher monthly payments and PMI.
Do you have to pay PMI with 10% down?
Typically yes, unless using a loan program like a piggyback loan to avoid it.
Deciding on the down payment amount depends on personal finances and long-term goals. A larger down payment has numerous benefits but isn’t always necessary. Smaller down payments are common and often more practical, especially for first-time buyers. Exploring all options, including assistance programs, can help determine the best approach for your situation.

2024.05.15 01:00 communist-crapshoot How to argue in favor of capitalism and against socialism, a helpful guide: Part 2.

Hello. My name is Bungling-Worm. You may remember me from my highly condemned submissions such as "Socialists-The Moralist Busybodies Preventing You From Beating YOUR Cheating C\nt of a Wife and Annoying Children", "Profit or: Humanity's Raisin Deter (sic).", "Who Really 'Needs' Clean Air and Water Anyway?", "Hayek Was Right! - How Fascism Saved Western Civilization™ From the Bolshevik Menace" and "SWEATSHOPS!-The Greatest Gift to Third-World Youths Since the Polio Vaccine.*"
Today I'd like to address my fellow capitalists. It's no secret that, much like the U.S. military in Iraq circa 2003-2011, we're losing the battle for the hearts and minds of our intended slav..subje...vict...vassa...thral...our fellow men™. For this reason my employer, Generic Right-Wing Think Tank Inc., in partnership with our good friends in the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and the U.K. Special Intelligence Service (formerly U.K. Military Intelligence, Section 6), have contacted the eminent propagandist conservative philosopher picnic-boy and gained his gracious permission to make an official Part 2 to his highly acclaimed How to argue in favor of capitalism and against socialism, a helpful guide the table of contents of which is freely available (for a limited time only) here: https://www.reddit.com/CapitalismVSocialism/comments/1cqvdsv/comment/l3wuegi/
Without picnic-boy's pioneering achievements in sophistry this work would not be possible. Now, without further add-do (sic) I give you a sneak peak into the table of contents of How to argue in favor of capitalism and against socialism, a helpful guide: Part 2.
  1. State, often and always without evidence (because none exists), that socialists control all mainstream news media, organized religion (especially the Catholic Church, the Jesuit Order, the Hasidic Colleges and every sect of Islam), academia, K-12 public education, the entire U.S. civil service/bureaucracy (from the municipal all the way up to the federal), the FBI, the CIA, the Justice Department, the Democratic Party, the neoconservative wing of the Republican party, the Fraternal Order of Freemasons, Hollywood, all police unions, the AFL-CIO board, the entire federal judiciary, all the major drug cartels and organized crime syndicates, the Federal Reserve System and the governments of literally every single third and second world country, especially the far-right and non-white majority ones. At the exact same time, and this is really important so pay close attention, accuse socialists of being unpopular teenage losers living in their parents' basement who're too lazy to get a job.
  2. When socialists remark upon how similar the claims in point 1 are to contemporary Neo-Nazi conspiracy theories and start to question how you feel about Jewish people turn around and accuse them of being "the real anti-semites" for "wanting to take all the Jews' money away ". In no way is this conflation of all Jewish people with rich capitalists a form of economic antisemitism. If someone points out that it is simply cherry pick quotes from Marx's "On the Jewish Question" out of context so that none of the parts where Marx makes it clear he is only critiquing Judaism as a religion while at the same time advocating for the political emancipation of the Jews as people are clear to the reader. After that go on to talk about how much you support Israel and how much happier you think diaspora Jews would be if they permanently immigrated there. Also and for no particular reason talk about the "failure" of the Kibbutzim apropos of nothing and don't elaborate on anything.
  3. Always portray struggles of democratic socialists within ML states/the Eastern Bloc as struggles for capitalism. Yes, it is true the people who organized the East German Uprising of 1953, the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the Prague Spring of 1968, and the Polish Solidarity Movement of the 1980's (before the Vatican and CIA hijacked it) all demanded democratic socialism, yes they all said that, but what they "really wanted" was capitalism and don't you let any so-called "historian" tell you otherwise.
  4. Pretend that socialists invented the very concept of the state and thus that all state rulers from the Roman Emperors, Egyptian Pharaohs, Greek Archons, etc. to modern Kings, Kaisers, Tsars and Presidents were/are "socialists".
  5. Don't forget to liberally pepper your psychotic rants with plenty of freudian slips and accusations in a mirror. For example, make the claim that socialists want to destroy the family so that they can isolate, abuse and indoctrinate women and children while at the same time assert that wives and children are nothing more than an extension of "the individual" who need to be shielded by this individual from an unrealistically hostile and confusing world (literally everything and everyone outside the home).
  6. Assert that socialists invented taxation and ignore that the first taxes in recorded history took the form of land-rents set by the first governments (which were councils of militaristic landlords).
  7. Defend rent-seeking and landlordism so long as it's done by private individuals. Remember rent-seeking is only bad when the government does it because they spend that money on social parasites and welfare leeches, unlike landlords who spend it on their second families in the next state over.
  8. Claim fascism is a form of socialism but also defend the legacies of lesser known fascist regimes, military dictatorships and other totalitarian right-wing governments whose symbols and mottos the people in your country haven't developed a learned fear response to yet the way they have the Swastika and the Fasces.
  9. When leftists point out that the main victims of things like the Great Purge and the Chinese Cultural Revolution were socialists, communists, anarchists and other left-wing intellectuals who opposed Stalin and Mao's cults of personality either ignore them and maintain that the "real victims" were the tiny minority of "innocent" religious extremists, ultranationalists (who were "definitely not" fascist collaborators or spies), and grain hoarders or do a complete one hundred and eighty degree pivot and actually defend the Great Purge and Cultural Revolution because "The more left someone is, the more violent/dictatorial they are, therefore anyone to the left of Stalin and Mao would have been more violent than them and it's a good thing they were killed."
  10. If you think any of these points are self-contradicting just remember that doublethink is merely a tool and "communists" (Stalinists) shouldn't be the only ones allowed to make use of it.
  11. Ignore the mountains of evidence that an anti-Stalinist left exists. Portray these leftists as right-wingers and edit their most famous works to leave out the many mentions of their own support for socialism.
  12. Remind your interlocutor(s) that socialism is gay and cringe.
  13. Remember that reading is gay but total illiteracy is still kinda cringe (unfortunately). Therefore read as little as humanly possible without going full illiterate. Our recommendation is to only read blurbs from ancap websites, your favorite conspiracy theorist podcasters' social media threads and your fellow "capitalists' " reddit posts and nothing else.
  14. In keeping with point 13 let the only things you "know" or "learn" about socialism be things you absorbed through osmosis and half remember from your high school history textbooks assuming you even read them at all. Never look at primary sources, never listen to people trying to explain things to you in detail, always complain that quotes provided to you are "blocks of text" or "unoriginal" and can thus be dismissed without serious engagement on your part.
  15. Remember that conformism, unquestioning obedience to authority, an unflinching belief in the correctness of the current socioeconomic status quo and conventional wisdom, and a general Panglossian worldview with a huge heaping of moral nihilism (which is definitely a real philosophical school of thought and not just a rationalization of one's own sociopathic tendencies) are actually somehow radical and that "conservatism is the new punk rock" of the 21st century.
  16. Remember that guy begging for spare change you passed on your way to work? Tell everyone that he was a capitalist. Carefully explain to workers why capitalists are actually worse off than everyone else in society as hard to believe as that may seem. Remind them that when it comes to capitalists' they're "cash poor, asset rich" which means all their wealth is tied up in assets like yachts and sports cars and mansions and designer suits/dresses/jewellery and second summer homes and third winter homes and tropical island resorts where "nothing unethical ever happens so shut up about it already"...and talk about how they can't use these assets to buy groceries or clothing or even pay the "exorbitant" property taxes on their assets. "So you see the real unfortunates in our society aren't the homeless or the victims of police brutality or refugees or the working poor, it's capitalists. These brave men and women take (minor) financial risks by using what little cash they have to found businesses, not for their own benefit but for ours, so that they can give us jobs and provide us with products and services and then what do these generous souls get in return for their herculean efforts? Just a whole lot of ingratitude from socialists and a bunch of tacky junk they can't even use to feed and clothe their many, many illegitimate and adoptive children that they're definitely not doing anything questionable with on their tropical islands that aren't even worth that much anymore because of rising sea levels (which have nothing to do with climate change, which is just a Chinese communist plot to make Americans poor don'tcha know?)".
