April's big inflation reveal: The meme trade has been a fun diversion, but the serious business is here: the April Consumer Price Index reading is set for release at 8:30 a.m. ET. Prices rose 0.4% over the prior month, matching March's pace and bringing the annual inflation rate down to 3.4%. Stripping out food and energy costs, economists expect core inflation fell to 3.6% annually in April, which would be the slowest pace in about three years. ‌

Today's Takeaway is by Jared Blikre, Markets Reporter ‌ Meme stocks survived another volatility-fueled session Tuesday. ‌ Taking a page from the 2021 playbook, GameStop and AMC Entertainment led the charge. ‌ Both meme stalwarts notched gains over 74% Monday and had further doubled their share prices on the open Tuesday — only to sell off most of the day into the close. Nevertheless, after dozens of volatility halts GameStop closed the day up 62% while AMC jumped by 30%.‌ Amid some gentle coaxing by Keith Gill (aka Roaring Kitty), a slew of names familiar to Reddit boards followed — companies like Koss, Tupperware, Virgin Galactic, Hertz, and BlackBerry. ‌ But while the explosion in volatility rightfully invites comparisons to the well-known 2021 saga that played out on Reddit and across US stock exchanges, 2024 is already proving to be quite different. ‌ This year, Wall Street is driving the bus. ‌
Vanda Research crunched the numbers and reported in a note to clients that GameStop and AMC have only seen a fraction of the inflows experienced in early 2021. Flows into these names at the peak of the early 2021 frenzy were over four times Monday's volume. ‌ "Do we think more retail traders can jump in on the trend in the coming days? Yes. Do we think this is a repeat of 2021? No, and the chances we reach that stage are low," said Vanda. ‌ Without glancing at a single stock chart, it's easy to point out that 2021 was likely a historical aberration fueled by bored recipients of pandemic stimulus checks. ‌ Wall Street was caught flat-footed. Hedge funds like Melvin Capital were obliterated. ‌ But institutional investors learned from the 2021 episode and are better prepared now, argues Vanda. ‌ "Quant/hedge funds are much better equipped to handle these situations nowadays," Vanda senior vice president Marco Iachini noted. I am a 16 year old girl and my brother is 27 years old. Growing up, it was mainly just me and my brother. My dad left shortly after I was born and my mom wasn’t around much. I know that my brother took all of the work to make sure that I was healthy and happy, and I can’t thank him enough for what he has done for me. He got a job at 15 to provide for us both while my mom was off doing God knows what. I was around 9 years old when my brother left for college at the age of 20. I remember he promised me that he would always come every weekend to check up on me and give me groceries for the week. For the first two years he kept true to his word. He would come by with food and hang out with me. I was lonely and sad without him, but I managed as best as I could for a child. It wasn’t until he met his girlfriend (now wife) that he changed. He stopped coming over as often, leaving me going hungry. I would text him, asking when he’d be back, and he would give me vague answers. I remember for two weeks I could only eat plan turkey sandwiches because that’s all I had to eat. Those vague answers soon turned into no answers. He would also make promises to me that he wouldn’t keep (e.g. buying me more food, clothes, money, etc.) I think I was around 12 or 13 when he stopped coming by entirely. He would no longer answer my texts and I would get no information about his life. He even had a kid when I was 14 that I didn’t even know about until a few days ago when he messaged me. I had honestly given up in ever contacting him again because it had been years since we last talked. He says that he wants to make up for lost time and that he misses me. I honestly felt so mad in that moment that I wanted to block him, but I didn’t. I instead agreed to meet with him. We met a few days later at the park we grew up nearby. He was there with his wife and son. When he saw me he got teary eyed and tried to hug me, but I pushed him away and told him I don’t like hugs anymore. He seemed hurt and that made me just the slightest bit happy. He started talking about what life was like in and after college and what he’s doing now. He said that now that I’m older he wants to be able to do more stuff with me that he missed out on. To put it bluntly, I went crazy on him. Here is a gist of what I said: “I’ve missed you a lot. I remember always turning on my phone to see if you had even responded to even one of my countless messages. For years I heard not one word out of you. I went hungry and dirty because you were no longer around. I get that you had to live your own life, but I didn’t know it included kicking me out of it. I was basically an orphan because Mom was never around. I was 13 when my period started and I didn’t have any money to buy what I needed. And why do you think that my texts randomly stopped one day? It’s because I have up on you. I gave up on you ever being able to care about me like you used to. Because of you I can’t trust people and what they promise me because I’m afraid they will leave me like you did. So I don’t care if you want to make up for lost time, and I don’t think you can because it’s your fault.” By the end of my rant he was crying and his wife was giving me the death stare. He started apologizing and saying that he didn’t know that was how I felt. I called BS because there is no way he never saw any of those texts I sent. After that I left and sobbed when I got home. I love my brother, I really do, but I don’t think it’s fair for him to try and come back like nothing happened.

Basically, I need some guidance. I’ve grown cold towards the things of God and hardened my heart, I desperately want to return to Him but feel stuck. Now, this isn’t a “what should I do” post, it’s a bit different. I have been diagnosed with OCD, and part of that is scrupulously, basically intense guilt shame and thoughts of never being enough and fear of being too far gone. I say that part because the most common way back to the Lord I hear about from testimonies online (and scripture, e.g., you will find me when you search for me with your whole heart), is crying out to Him day and night and praying and worshiping etc nonstop for hours, then He answers. However, when I have moments of intense OCD, that’s what I do (pray for hours, etc). Interestingly, I have heard from Him in those moments, but it’s screwed by OCD and just isn’t a healthy spot mentally.
So if you have made it this far in my post, how do I balance the two? I want to cry out to Him, but afraid OCD will hijack it. I then also fear I blame OCD for more than it’s done, and grow apathetic because I don’t hunger and thirst for Him like I should because I (and others I’ve confessed this to) say it’s OCD.
Any input it welcome. Hope it makes sense.

I'm under the impression that macrophages mainly phagocytose, but neutrophils do that already along with other things (e.g. NETs). I've been looking for this and can't find a straight answer. Is it just an ability to digest bigger things? If so, why are they so important when NETs do that already?

Storytime (Why retake the GRE?)

I took the GRE in October 2020 at home, the old one for MS admissions, but did not end up using it for any applications. My old score for the old GRE was 323 (162V, 89th percentile; 161Q, 65th percentile) and writing was 6. I ended up getting into a decent program in applied mathematics, and needed to retake it for competitive PhD programs in biostatistics/statistics and bioinformatics for the Fall 2025 cycle. I was aiming for perfect quant and somewhat improved verbal. I am working full time doing research and writing papers and programming lots and lots, it was really challenging to prepare, but I had lots of preparation time on my side---roughly two months.

Mock Scores (Markov property)

I double majored in pure mathematics and statistics from a top public school in SoCal, but I get incredibly anxious when taking these sorts of time constrained tests, so my quant was generally not perfect at all and all over the place:

1. Two days ago I took my first mock in the morning timed and got 159V, 160Q (powerprep 2, free)
2. The same day, later in the evening, I took another mock and got 159V, 168Q (powerprep+ 2, $40)
3. The next day, I took another mock in the evening and got 161V, 164Q (powerprep+ 3, $40).

So my quant performance was all over the place. Most of the time I would literally SELECT THE WRONG ANSWER and not fully read the damn question out of anxiety.

Game day (and the day before)

I didn't get very good sleep (only slept 5hrs because I ate really late and was super worried). I made a nootropic shake concoction and had some other supplements 30-40 minutes before I started the actual exam, which helped with my sleep deficit (vegan protein, matcha powder, creatine, l-theanine shake; vitamin B complex, CoQ-10, vitamin D extra strength; and a banana). I think diet the night before is actually super important and I did heavy carb and creatine loading: finished four servings of gnocchi; 1.1lbs ribeye steak; one avocado and one salmon filet. And up until the test day, I made sure to be physically active and stuck to my workout schedule to make sure that I have the best possible VO2 max on test day. This included doing zone 2-4 cardio weekly for at least 90 minutes per week. I see lots of people give up their workout schedule, but I think that's actually detrimental.
Beyond hacking my physiology, I took my test at a test center. I think that was a big deal because the test center was super quiet and there were no distractions at all. Driving there took me 40 minutes, so I was also able to settle down emotionally and just meditate about doing well while getting there. I listened to music as well which got me in a good mood.
I had completely forgotten that we get an unofficial score as soon we finish, so I was incredibly SHOCKED at how I did. I think if I had known I get the score immediately (unofficial) I would've done worse.

Other notes (resources I liked)

GREGMAT GUY... Danke Schoen. I used mostly gregmat strategies for all my preparation.

1. I used prepswift and made a cheat sheet from prepswift concepts for verbal, quant and writing. Making the cheat sheet was really helpful.
2. In particular, I focused on a lot of the strategy guides for the verbal and quant prepswift sections.
3. I did Manhattan 5lbs first, ALL problems EXCEPT the word problem ones since those ones were too wordy for no reason compared to actual ETS problems.
4. I did no foundations for quant until after I sampled my baseline performance on the Manhattan 5lb problems. Then I revised with prepswift and the official ETS material.
5. The official ETS quant and general GRE books are really good for practice as well. These are the real indicator of test performance since the Manhattan book problems are actually a lot more challenging.
6. I had very little verbal practice. I read and write everyday, so I just wanted to hit high 80s percentile for verbal. I did practice the vocab though (gregmat vocab mountain AND Magoosh GRE vocab).
7. For people with high anxiety: for the quant, just remember to recognize patterns, read the problem, stick to your foundations, plug and chug, and breathe. Everytime I started the quant section, I used the remaining time from the verbal to write that preceding sequence out so that I was using metacognition and prevent myself from panicking.

Just wanted to share how I managed to fix Halo Infinite freezing up and resulting in a crash every ~7th game on Windows 10, in hopes it helps someone fix those annoying crashes as well

Crash reason: Read access violation

I scoured the interwebs and found out how to determine why my game crashed. This post helped me find out the reason I crashed so often, which was the same as u/AetopiaMC 's one.
Make sure you verify that's the reason for your crashes as well in %TEMP%\crash_report\crash_info.txt before trying to fix it with the approach described below

Next my quest lead me to how to fix the issue. Found another post from the same user that described how to fix the same issue.
It involves modifying the type of memory structure used by the game by adapting the game's exe application manifest. However, due to recent addition of Easy AntiCheat the game won't even start if you modify the game's executable file.

Modifying the game's memory structure using an alternative method

As I was already deep into the rabbit hole, I tried to find an alternative way to change the game's memory structure. Luckily, I found an online PDF on how to achieve this exactly.
It adds a windows registry entry, which will tell the system to use a different memory layout for Halo's game executable. 10+ games later I didn't crash a single time, this fix seems to have worked.

The fix itself

Put the following code into a file, and save it with the reg extension, e.g. put it into a file named halo_infinite_crash_fix.reg. Make sure there's an empty line at the end of the file:

Once you save that text into the file, double click on it to apply these changes to your system. You might need to run it as administrator if you aren't already.
This registry entry above will also start Halo Infinite with a high priority CPU allocation, which means it will help against dips in performance.
The mitigation options defined above don't do anything with this zero value, I just added them as a reminder in case I needed additional tweaks to the runtime environment of the executable in future.

Additional performance improvement recommendations

• disable "limit inactive frame rate" which I guess may have caused one other type of crash I encountered related to GPU Hang
• further, set the "Minumum Framerate" and "Maximum Framerate" for a more consistent experience, as mentioned by the in-game tooltip

I’m posting on here for some help and advice with results from my blood tests. I’ve had at least 10 blood tests and never really had answers for these few abnormal ones. My symptoms are tiredness/fatigue, tachycardia, hypotension, blood pooling (I know these are POTS symptoms but recently they have gotten worse, my heart rate goes up to 190 now which it never used too go higher than 170/180). Looking at my history these have always been abnormal and it’s nothing new BUT has gradually worsened.

When I ask about my results my GP just tells me that my folate levels are low and i’m on my 3rd 3 month course of folic acid. Does anyone know what the cause for these results may be or how I can fix it? I’m trying to lose weight.

More and more, I see blatant fraud on platforms like Amazon, Ebay, and Discogs to name a few. The listing are for one thing but they send another, in the case of 3rd party sellers.
In the most current case. I spent more money than I would have like and paid for a pair of "Sonicare Protectiveclean" model 5000 "gum care edition" toothbrushes (an older model) all verified by the title, description, and pictures. Amazon has listings for the newer models like the "Sonicare Optimal Clean" too, but I could have gotten them cheaper elsewhere, like $40 dollars.
The third party seller shipped the Optimal Clean instead. I was frustrated, but more so, when I realized it wasn't shipped by Amazon. It started many, many hours of trying to return it, on the phone with Amazon. Seller uploaded a cell phone pic of a label for the return. After more hours on the phone with Amazon asking them to make him send a proper email link, he uploaded a pdf, but at least ,this time, the label was valid. It's still a real pain compared to the normal provider link to a printable label.
I spoke with many different Amazon representatives, including a manager. None seemed to care that he was committing fraud, at least from my understanding. After my issue, I read other reviews, and many mentioned it wasn't what they ordered. I think he's doing this on a large scale. One mentioned that "a mistake could be made in shipping", but I said read the reviews, and I don't believe he has the item listed. He's shipping the newer model for a higher price than elsewhere even on Amazon. He seems to be the default seller on allot of the "ProtectiveClean" models.
I posted a question. I was actually curious. I want to know if I can trust amazon listings, and sellers on amazon. My seller answered... and, for me, it confirmed he knows exactly what he's doing. He still comes up as the default seller which really bothers me.
Q: Has anyone gotten the older "Protective Clean" as listed, or is everyone getting a newer model e.g. optimal clean"?

The tractor beam interrupted the functioning of the gravity plates that had been installed in our brand new two hundred year old ship. They were supposed to work without power for at least twenty minutes. I had paid some attention to the briefing on the ship's systems, just not... really good attention, which was regretting Nyany let out yelp of surprise. She hadn't spent months in zero g training. I grabbed her hand and since I was still bolted to the pilot's seat I easily helped her into her seat where she strapped in.
"Thanks," She smiled at me and blinked slowly. "It's been a couple centuries since my zero-g training. Felidians do not do well in zero gravity."

Torpedo Alert
