2024.05.16 17:30 thazeref Will Tony and Ziva spin-off live up the hype?

Does actors' aging in Tv shows affect your watching experience? Let me explain properly.
I am super happy and excited about this Tony and Ziva spin-off as they have been the only reason I kept watching the show; their relationship and chemistry was just too good. However, (and don't take it a sort of hate please) is it just me thinking that the age of the actors will somehow give a strange and "negative" impact to the upcoming short-serie? Do not take me wrong: I love them and therefore I will watch them again for sure, but I feel like Tony and Ziva's prime moments were from 2006 to 2013 when they were still very young and attractive and they did changed since then. I am not trying to say that they're looking like they're 80. It's just that when Ziva came back in season 16/17 I was really happy but it hit me differently. My fear is - and I do hope I'll be wrong! - that the show won't be able to give the same old Tiva vibes as we used to experience. Time flies, we all know that, but I do really hate the writers for giving Cote such a stupid character development making her leaving the show in 2011; had not that happened, we could've seen a better Tiva plot in their good times.

Uncanny Resemblances: The World's Most Famous Doppelgangers
In the realm of celebrity culture and public fascination, few things captivate our attention more than the existence of doppelgangers – individuals who bear an uncanny resemblance to each other, despite not being related. From historical figures to modern-day celebrities, the world has witnessed some truly remarkable look-alikes. In this article, we will explore some of the most famous doppelgangers that have left us amazed and intrigued.
  1. Queen Elizabeth I and Cate Blanchett The striking resemblance between the legendary Queen Elizabeth I and acclaimed actress Cate Blanchett is undeniable. Blanchett's portrayal of the Virgin Queen in the 1998 film "Elizabeth" and its sequel "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" was not only a testament to her acting prowess but also a stunning visual resemblance that left audiences in awe.
  2. Salvador Dalí and Adrien Brody The surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and actor Adrien Brody share an uncanny likeness. Brody's angular features, intense gaze, and slender build closely resemble those of the eccentric Spanish painter. In fact, Brody even portrayed Dalí in the 2011 film "Midnight in Paris," further emphasizing their remarkable similarity.
  3. Jennifer Lawrence and Zubaida Tharwat The resemblance between American actress Jennifer Lawrence and Egyptian actress Zubaida Tharwat from the 1960s is so striking that it has sparked numerous online discussions. The similarities in their facial features, particularly their eyes and smile, have led many to believe that Lawrence could be a modern-day reincarnation of the classic beauty.
  4. Vladimir Putin and Mikheil Gelovani The likeness between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Soviet-era actor Mikheil Gelovani is so strong that conspiracy theories have emerged, suggesting that Putin may be a time traveler or even a clone. Gelovani, who portrayed Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in numerous films, shares Putin's piercing gaze and stern expression.
  5. Michael Shannon and King Philip II of Spain Actor Michael Shannon bears a remarkable resemblance to King Philip II of Spain, a 16th-century monarch. The similarities in their facial structure, beard, and intense stare have been noted by history enthusiasts and art lovers alike. Shannon's resemblance to the king has even inspired artistic recreations and comparisons.
These famous doppelgangers serve as reminders of the fascinating quirks of genetics and the enduring allure of uncanny resemblances. Whether through sheer coincidence or a mysterious twist of fate, these look-alikes have captured our imagination and sparked countless discussions about the nature of identity and the power of visual similarity. 2024.05.16 09:02 Livid_Signature_7522 Can't seem to get interview or job after longterm injury recovery. Advice?

Hey, so I've spent the last decade recovering from a hit & run accident that occurred in my sophomore year in college in 2014, and finishing my Bachelors degree in 2D animation. I was essentially disabled but never filed for it. My injury was my body being stuck in biofeedback loop - aka constant level 8 pain from the neck down, and if I lifted anything more that 15lbs, sat too long, held a pencil, or walked more than a mile resulted in extreme sharp pain. (I attended most of my classes by standing the back or laying on the floor and a lot of ice packs).
In late 2022, I finally made a full recovery, finished the last requirement for my degree, and graduated in December.
2023 I was so excited (and extremely neverous) to get my first job in the industry - 2 months into job hunting and a lot of rejection emails, the writer and actor strikes happened. I couldn't find work. I didn't have a network anymore because everyone wrote me off. Late Spring, I finally landed a remote contract illustration job with help from a family acquaintance.
Now is 2024, I still have the illustration job, but it's inconsistent and doesn't pay enough live off of. 30% of the animation industry is unemployed in my city. Stupid Ai destabilized the career I got a degree in. The last of my savings is gone. I'm trying to get a day job so I can at least pay back my debts and rebuild my savings. However, I'm just not getting any callbacks.
I have a cover letter and do the follow-up calls - more than half of which ended with the fact they were over staffed and the position wasn't actually open.
I've gotten 2 interviews in the 2 1/2 months of job hunting. The biggest feedback I've gotten is:
1) concern that I won't get along with younger employees because of my age (31) 2) that I'm over qualified, but don't have enough experience.
How am I supposed to get experience when no one will employ me? My longest employment periods were back in 2013 & 2011 before I transferred to university. I couldn't work for the last decade because of the injury. I can't do anything about the employment gaps or my age (31 years). But I have 2 degrees, graduated with honors, I'm a hard worker, friendly, capable, and I didn't give up when doctors told me the pain was permanent.
I'm finally normal again. Why can't I get consistent work or at least more interviews? Thoughts? Constructive advice?

2024.05.15 18:19 Quiet_Historian1841 "Vice City, Leonida" Rebranding Explained

The state of Florida was originally accepted as canonical in the HD Universe canon of the series, before being rendered non-canon. It was only mentioned in Grand Theft Auto IV and subtly in Grand Theft Auto V. In later games, Vice City's mentions are no longer accompanied by the state's name, which hinted at the state's upcoming rebranding—Rockstar North preserved the previous fictional names of cities and states after the series' second reboot in 2008, they most likely thought about ditching Florida, possibly around 2011-2012, in exchange for a more GTA-esque name.
Eventually, Florida would be declared non-canonical in favor of Grand Theft Auto VI's 'State of Leonida', which includes (so far) several reimaginings of actual Floridian counties as well as the cities of Vice City and Vice Beach (both of which were initially treated as Florida locations).
Because the 3D Universe trilogy is set in an entirely different canon, the "Vice City, Leonida" rebranding is exclusive to the HD Universe and has no bearing on the well-known "Vice City, Florida" from the earlier titles. In both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the city of San Andreas from the original Grand Theft Auto game was used in the 3D Universe for a while. Recurring "Hollywood" actors from Grand Theft Auto III advertisements being retconned as Vinewood actors. San Andreas listed as a destination in the official Francis International Airport website—a leftover from the original concept of San Andreas where it was a single city, and the decision to change it to an entire state hadn't yet been made when the Grand Theft Auto series was first rebooted in 2001—as opposed to any of the individual cities in San Andreas. It finally became the name of the state in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas during development.
Apart from the state's new designation, Vice-Dale and an unidentified theme park have taken the place of the "Miami" metropolitan area and the "FunWorld" theme park in the HD Universe. Tampa's counterpart in the HD Universe remains a mystery, as the location does exist in the 3D Universe counterpart of Leonida, but has not been confirmed yet for this new rendition of the map.

2024.05.14 18:53 incandescent_walrus The Eras Tour Follies

The Eras Tour Follies
https://preview.redd.it/0oefl9gtag0d1.jpg?width=1356&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81fec8d4d4162a8dd9b67ffbfbdb57b60efbdf3c

The Folly of it all: a Revue

Folly, from the French folie, means madness, extravagance, foolishness, lunacy. It has two dominant uses. One is madness or craziness as in folie a deux (a delusion shared by two people). The other meaning of folly is a musical revue, developed in Paris in the late 1800s at the Folies Bergere.
Revue in French means “magazine,” and the musical revue is meant to be the performance version of reading a magazine. A crucial part of the revue, cabaret, burlesque, or variety-show style of entertainment is the inclusion of commentary on current events, often satirical or parody. The Eras Tour provides a retrospective - a review, if you will - of Taylor Swift’s musical catalog. It tells several stories. And with the inclusion of The Tortured Poets Department set, it now also provides clear satirical commentary on Swift’s own story. It is not by accident that the TTPD set was added to the Eras Tour in Paris, the birthplace of the revue.
The initial concept for the musical revue at Folies Bergere centered on women and dance, but was not overtly sexual. American choreographer Loie Fuller, whose serpentine dance style Taylor Swift honored with the Dress performance on the Reputation tour, worked at the early Folies Bergere. Fuller also fought for artists’ control of their own work and lost a legal battle to copyright her choreography. She was also a lesbian.
You look like Loie Fuller in this light
However, revue overlapped and blended with cabaret, burlesque, variety, and vaudeville into the early 20th century. Elaborate staging and “small nude women” became the hallmark of the Folies Bergere under director Paul Derval; the Moulin Rouge was a contemporaneous music hall with a more sexual nature, and the American Ziegfeld Follies - inspired by Bergere - were known for their chorus girls.
The opening of the Eras Tour, with dancers using massive billowing seashell-shaped fabric and sunrise-like lighting, is a callback to Loie Fuller’s choreography style, as are the billowing Folklore dresses. It ends with the Midnights set, including the Vigilante Shit burlesque-style dance using cabaret chairs. Both the endcaps of the Eras Tour are intentionally choreographed Follies.

Bejeweled & Burlesque

American neo-burlesque, as championed by Dita Von Teese and others, seeks to reclaim burlesque as an art form for self-expression of sexuality rather than for consumption.
Among other hints, the music video for Bejeweled - released a week before the Eras Tour was announced - featured many Easter eggs per Taylor Swift herself. In that video, Dita Von Teese, with her iconic martini glass, teaches Taylor's character neoburlesque dance. Speaking to Out magazine of working with Swift, Von Teese said, “She knew everything about what I do and about burlesque.”
The background for Taylor’s own burlesque show in the Bejeweled video is a pink, purple, and gold sky very much like the opening of the Eras tour, and scallops line the floor. Taylor is sitting on the clock that was in the Mastermind lyrics video.

Clockwise from top left: Bejeweled burlesque opening shot; Eras Tour opening; did I mention Loie Fuller was a lesbian who lived in Paris?; what if I told you none of it was accidental?
As the dance unfolds, Taylor is surrounded by dancers holding fans and then lying on the ground encircling her in a kaleidoscope-like starburst, both images that appear in the TTPD set. She touches the clock to make it disappear as the light turns blue, and rainbow lights on the dancers encircle her, reminiscent of her dancers and backup singers in the Karma performance at the end of the Eras tour.
https://preview.redd.it/sqrz9csrag0d1.jpg?width=1696&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e818a5ac0c617e22f85c5f6da9306bbfac99da55
Rainbows and dancers and kaleidoscopes. Go Chiefs!

The Eras Tour: Taylor Swift Follies

As the dancers open each Eras Tour performance, orange, pink, and purple Loie Fuller-esque fabric billows. “It’s been a long time coming…” Swift’s disembodied voice sings, a reference to the years since her last tour, but I think also referencing also Fuller’s - and Swift’s - fights for artists to own their work. This performance will be a retrospective, but it’s a retrospective of a catalog that Swift does not yet fully own. It may also be a reference to a coming-out.
Swift bursts out of the billowing scalloped fabric, a shimmering musical goddess arising fully formed at an ever-ascendant peak, reminiscent of Venus, the goddess of love and sex - and also of victory and prosperity.
She then performs a magnificent three and a half hour retrospective of her work. But we need some kind of social commentary, parody, or satire to make this concept work. And what about the other meaning of folly?
Welcome to Female Rage: The Musical.
The Tortured Poets Department set is a spectacle. In stark white and black, it leans into the asylum aesthetic of Fortnight, and it is nonetheless the most over-the-top visual experience of the entire concert. The Tortured Poets Department album contains heavy themes of Swift navigating her fame (which I won’t explore much here), and the Eras Tour set is no different. The visuals represent an asylum, a high school pep rally, zombie horror, an alien abduction, war, and finally a Vaudeville-esque representation of The Eras Tour itself, in which a doll-like Swift performs an onstage costume change, reanimates and then proceeds to perform I Can Do It With A Broken Heart, a song as upbeat as it is seething about performing the Eras tour while depressed, mirrors reflecting the audience as they confront the decision whether to sing along to the line “All the pieces of me shattered as the crowd was chanting ‘more!’”
Have they come to take me awaaaaaay?
The allure of the folly was audience participation. Follies were madness because the audience became part of the story, swept up in it, performers surrounding them and transforming the entire venue to the stage. There was no fourth wall. Any modern concert will include audience participation, but Swift is a master at engaging her audience in a way that no other pop star is - and here, she tells us, it is perhaps to her own personal undoing. Are you not entertained?
Midnights is the final set of the Eras Tour, and Vigilante Shit is its climax. As she performs a burlesque dance, Swift sings “Ladies always rise above; ladies know what people want… the lady simply had enough…" "I don't dress for women / I don't dress for men / Lately I’ve been dressing for revenge / I don’t start shit, but I can tell you how it ends.”
Why is burlesque dance “dressing for revenge”? Perhaps because it is not burlesque but neoburlesque, which is done for self-empowerment. She's not "dressing" - performing - for others, she's doing it for her own reasons. Taylor Swift is reclaiming her own music - not only rerecording the masters, but in a broader sense too. TTPD lyrically expounds on this idea - Taylor Swift is making music for herself now. She started off making music for herself - she didn’t start this conflict - but she’s telling us how it ends, and it’s with her winning.
After Vigilante Shit, she stays in the same costume, with a segue into Bejeweled, and then Mastermind, finishing the concert with the lyric “I’m a mastermind” and immediately taking a bow.
See how the Bejeweled backdrop and the Midnights bodysuit look similar?
Karma, last on the set list, functions as a curtain call. Curtain call songs in musical theatre tend to summarize or reprise the story that the actors just told, coming back around. Karma is a song about Taylor Swift reclaiming her art, and so is the Eras Tour. Of course, Karma also being a possible lost album fits well with this.

What does all of this mean?

The Eras Tour is Taylor Swift’s neo-burlesque revue, it is her reclamation of her art, and it is the key to her claiming the key to her castle. As she performed this dance in the Bejeweled video, the countdown and her exile ended and the clock struck midnight.
We know with the countdown theme she's been doing, there's something coming that'll be "1" in the countdown. Re-recordings haven't counted so far, so I don't think it will be Rep TV or Debut unless they come with significant new material - such as Rep TV + Karma (which would be TS12) and then Debut + TS13. I have always thought Debut would come at the end of the Eras Tour, and with all of this analysis, I think that's likely to happen along with something that is a significant change for Taylor Swift.
https://preview.redd.it/2evlakm4bg0d1.jpg?width=1700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff0c2310fd6f64953da0be9225bd1407f07c439e
I also think there might be something going on with the moon. The next blue moon is August 19, 2024. Just putting that out there.
Whatever happens between now and the end of the Eras Tour, the clock will strike midnight, the performance will be over, and Taylor Swift will step into the dawn of a new era. We'll meet her at midnight.
https://preview.redd.it/qe2sb78wag0d1.jpg?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba72e204a5c95f15c6868807278785ddabd0c963
Images from Bejeweled MV, Lavender Haze MV, Daylight lyric video, and the Eras Tour
P.S. The Bejeweled video also contained several easter eggs for Speak Now TV being the next re-recording. The music video for I Can See You, a Speak Now vault track, was released toward the beginning of the Eras tour. Joey King and Presley Cash, who were in the Mean video as children, were also in the I Can See You video. Taylor wrote on IG that she wanted them specifically. The video for “Mean” (2011) features Taylor Swift performing in a variety of music hall-style sets. Taylor spends most of the video playing banjo in a string band, and then transitions to a Broadway stage in a fringe dress, reminiscent of the Ziegfeld Follies era.
Joey broke the banjo when she used it as a weapon to save Taylor from the vault
Loie Fuller’s break into show business was playing banjo in a Buffalo Bill touring show, from which point she went to New York. For her breakout role in a New York theatre, critics reportedly said she could sing but she couldn’t dance - similar to Swift’s inspiration for the song Mean. Fuller went on to be one of the most influential figures in modern dance.

2024.05.14 12:18 FrenchieHoneytoast What was the name of this series?

There was a series on Netflix about 10 years ago, it was about a Palestinian man and an Israeli woman who had a romance, it was set in modern times. The woman was a soldier and was from a wealthy family, the man was from a poor family. It was a drama/romance
I’m gonna try and give as much detail as I can remember about it.
The actor had almost shaved short black hair, the woman had brown hair. They were both in their early 20s.
There was a scene where they were at the woman’s house and in the pool.
There was another scene with her at work as a solider, she was in a watch tower with some other soldiers and they were (I think) watching something disparaging about Palestine, there was some sort of drama involving a phone…I can’t really remember.
There was another scene about him trying to cross a border (not sure which one) and being given a hard time by the Israeli soldiers.
I believe the man lived with his mom in Gaza, he had a friend he was always with.
The woman also lived with her parents.
It was a series, I think there were 2 or 3 seasons.
It came out sometime between 2011-2014?
Does anyone know what the show was called?

i think someone made up a role for alan cumming in the eternal diva movie...??
hi all! was chatting with my mom & we ended up on the subject of "actors i've heard of but don't know why i know them", as we often do, which ended up with me taking a look at alan cumming's filmography on wikipedia and i scrolled to the entries for 2009 under the "films" section and?
if you look at the image attached (hopefully, mobile formatting and all), it says he was in professor layton and the eternal diva as the voice of "ian". now i don't know about you but i don't remember anyone called ian in the movie, and a search on the layton wiki seems prove my point??
another thing to note-- it puts the movie's release date as 2009, but the dub came out in 2011, didn't it? so i thought, well, maybe he was in the japanese dub somehow; i googled his name & professor layton in japanese (アラン・カミング レイトン教授) and still came back empty-handed.
searching for "alan cumming" and "eternal diva" (in quotes, so it only shows results with both of those phrases) only brings up pages that list his filmography that are all presumably copied from the same source (possibly wikipedia?)??
my last resort was to search up combinations of his name & the movie title (alan cumming eternal diva; cumming eternal diva; alan cumming professor layton; ian eternal diva; ect.) on twitter, of all places, because that's a good enough way for me to find people talking about things happening by 2009-2011, and (at least in my opinion) surely an actor with enough awards to list on their own wikipedia page being in the professor layton movie of all things would be at least semi-noteworthy...??
here's an archive of the wikipedia page, in case anyone actually ever fixes it (i'm not the best at fixing wiki articles, especially not ones on actual wikipedia not just a fan wiki, so it would be much appreciated if someone could fix it!!)
if you have any info or thoughts on this at all please let me know because i seriously feel so so confused? the only reasoning i can come up with is a) someone just made this up and put it on wikipedia and the overlap between alan cumming fans and layton fans is nonexistent so nobody noticed or b) i just seriously missed something really obvious (entirely possible)
actually last note: i remembered you can check the edit history of a wikipedia article so we can narrow down exactly when this was added! it was NOT there on april 4th 2017 at 1:12 but it WAS there on april 4th 2017 at 1:28 so. there's our answer i guess? the only contributions to wikipedia from that specific ip address were just multiple edits to that alan cumming filmography page all within an hour, so. do with that information what you will i guess??
hope this was helpful somehow(?), or at the very least it was entertaining i dont know 👍 any questions / comments / critiques are welcomed and very much encouraged, like i said earlier i feel like i missed something very obvious as i usually tend to 😭 but thanks for reading !!

2024.05.12 21:18 Red_Icnivad Does Cradle's Kickstarter campaign tiers seem high to anyone else?

Edit: Anime and Castlevania aren't fair comparisons (see edits below), but Vox Machina(I talk about this one at the bottom) still seems like a very good budget to compare against.
Can someone explain to me where this money from the Kickstarter is going, because these tiers seem utterly ridiculous. Creating an episode of anime typically costs anywhere from $20k to $200k, depending on quality. src src [Edit: Upon further reflection and research, comparing to traditional anime isn't fair, because workers are underpaid, quality is often low, and they get big efficiency of scale.]
Castlevania, a modern, incredibly well animated show for a western audience, with good voice actors by Tiger Animation (the same studio that's doing Cradle) was estimated to cost around $300k per episode. [Edit: this is a dubious quote with no good source, but I think it might be reasonable-ish based on a couple things: Vox Machina (see below) had a $750 budget for their pilot, using an LA based animation studio (vs South Korea based, which is about 65% the cost of living compared to LA), and while I think Castlevania's animation is good, I'd put Vox in a league above it (more action, more complex abstract animations that need to be redrawn every frame). So, with those two things combined, I could see $300k being a reasonable ballpark, although maybe still low.]
And let's not forget that a kickstarter doesn't need to completely fund a whole series, which I assume could span multiple seasons. The show will also make money from airing, which can fund subsequent seasons and pay back typical investors.
So, let's look at the kickstarter's tiers.
$1m: "So if we raise $1 million, we'll be making an "animatic," which is kind of like black-and-white sketch art brought to life" What!? For a million dollars you're going to make some sketches? [Edit: this is apparently 90 minutes, which I missed. Still seems expensive, but not as much as I was originally thinking]
$2m: Add on a fully animated trailer. A trailer? For an extra million!?
$3.6m: Now we add on a pilot episode. This is about 10 times more than top quality animation studios cost. Maybe this would be inline if you hired Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.
I'm going to skip down to $14.3m, to create a 7 episode season! Are these episodes 5 hours long each? Because I don't see how that's a reasonable budget for this. Also, the goals of Will writing a new novel are ridiculous - that's literally already his job.
Even if we look at higher budget animations, Vox Machina (aka Critical Role), which I think is a really well animated show (imo), which had one of the highest animation budgets around, raised $9m in a kickstarter campaign, which funded an entire 12 episode season. But their initial goal was $750k for the pilot compared to Cradle's pilot goal of $3.6m. Let's remember that their animation studio is in LA, rather than Seoul, which is going to have cheaper costs.
So, where is the rest of the money going because while I love the idea of seeing Cradle come to life, this is feeling like a cash grab when everything is about 5x what it should cost.
Edit: TLDR, it's not as bad as I initially was making it out to be, but I think it's still pretty overblow.

2024.05.12 16:27 underated41 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Released on May 8, 2024, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is the long-awaited sequel to "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2014) and the 2011 reboot, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes".
Directed by Wes Ball, this new installment takes us into uncharted territories of the simian universe, carried by a remarkable cast composed of Freida Pinto, Dichen Lachman, and Nonso Anozie.
But does this film succeed in rising above its predecessors and leaving a lasting impression?
To explore this question, let's delve into the different aspects of this ambitious production.
  1. A gripping story in a changing world
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" takes place several years after the events of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". Caesar, the charismatic leader of the apes, is gone, leaving behind a fragile legacy.
Two rival simian nations face each other: the Gorilla Apes, led by the ruthless Koba, and the Bonobo Apes, advocating for peaceful coexistence with humans.
At the heart of these tensions, we follow the fate of Noa, a young pacifist chimpanzee raised by a human tribe. When a brutal Gorilla raid decimates his village, Noa embarks on a perilous journey to save the survivors and avenge his family.
His journey will take him through unexplored territories, to meet new tribes, and to question everything he thought he knew about the world and his place in it.
  1. Stunning visuals and immersive staging
One of the undeniable strengths of the film lies in its visual prowess.
Lush landscapes, dense forests, and time-ravaged urban ruins provide a striking backdrop to the story.
The apes, animated in CGI, are strikingly realistic, both in their movements and their facial expressions.
Wes Ball's camera takes us to the heart of the action, making us experience the intensity of the battles and the wild beauty of this changing world.
The director also brilliantly uses the codes of adventure cinema, alternating moments of breathless tension with sequences of contemplation imbued with poetry.
  1. An exploration of universal themes
Beyond its captivating plot, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" tackles profound themes that resonate with our times.
The film questions the notion of power, violence, coexistence between different species, and the search for identity.
The figure of Noa, torn between his human origins and his simian upbringing, embodies this quest for identity and the desire to find his place in a world in chaos.
If the film's message is not always subtle, it is no less relevant and invites reflection on our own societies and the challenges we face.
  1. A talented cast at the service of the story
Freida Pinto embodies with conviction Nova, a young woman who is courageous and determined to protect those she loves.
Dichen Lachman brings a welcome nuance to the character of Maia, a human torn between her attachment to Noa and her loyalty to her people.
Nonso Anozie plays a formidable and charismatic Koba, whose cruelty is counterbalanced by a certain psychological complexity.
The other actors, such as Sergio Rizzuto and Aldo Salvietti, contribute to enriching the film's universe with their fair and touching performances.
  1. An imperfect but still captivating film
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is not without its flaws.
The screenplay, sometimes predictable, lacks originality at times and struggles to fully explore the potential of its secondary characters.
The film could also have benefited from further delving into the themes it addresses, sometimes skimming the surface without really dwelling on it.
However, these weaknesses do not call into question the overall quality of the film. "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is a visually stunning and thought-provoking work that offers a captivating and action-packed adventure in a world where the lines between humans and apes are increasingly blurred.
It is a film that will undoubtedly entertain and challenge audiences, leaving them with a lot to think about long after the credits roll.
Overall, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is a solid sequel that delivers on its promises. It is a must-see for fans of the franchise and for anyone looking for a thought-provoking and visually stunning action film.

2024.05.11 21:29 EleanorRaine Just remembered my first trans awakening

Eleanor with a non-rant post? So rare!
So, for literally no reason at all I was once again on the thought train of how to prove to people that I am trans and have always been trans. I've only been able to go back as far as 2016 at best, when I was around 11-12 years old. Still a long time, but since the memories are shaky, it's whatever.
Until today, I got an even further back memory, to at best 2011, though realistically it was 2012-ish.
In the show "Wizards of Waverly Place," one of the main actors had to leave for a few episodes to finish work for the movie Rio. To account for this, in January of 2011, his character was genderswapped from Max to Maxine. He was swapped back in March of 2011.
I so very distinctly remember seeing this, and heavily wishing it could happen to me. At this point, I was 7 at the oldest. So yeah, pretty sure I'm trans :P
Never expected to randomly remember that today. Thanks for reading <3

2024.05.11 21:13 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Wes Craven

Directors at the Box Office: Wes Craven
https://preview.redd.it/5jhcjegtjuzc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=71a26f361e87730152e07e12f1bc76322db0b023
Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Wes Craven's turn.
Craven earned a master's degree in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently bought a 16mm film camera and began making short movies. His friend Steve Chapin informed him of a messenger position at a New York City film production co, where his brother, future folk-rock star Harry Chapin worked. He started in the industry as a sound editor, before transitioning as a porn director. He said he made "many hardcore X-rated films" under pseudonyms. And then he transitioned into directing for the big screen.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

The Last House on the Left (1972)

"Mari, seventeen, is dying. Even for her, the worst is yet to come."
His directorial debut. The film stars Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David Hess, Fred J. Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, and Marc Sheffler. The plot follows Mari Collingwood, a teenager who is abducted, raped, and tortured by a family of violent fugitives led by Krug Stillo on her seventeenth birthday. When her parents discover what happened to her, they seek vengeance against the family, who have taken shelter at their home.
Craven, who had no money at the time, was put on the job of synchronizing dailies for Sean S. Cunningham's Together. They became friends, and Hallmark Releasing gave them $90,000 to make another film. Craven considered a hardcore film, but decided to tone it down a bit. The idea for this film came from Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring, and Craven wanted to make a film in which the violence would be shown in detail onscreen, as he felt that many popular films of the era, such as Westerns, glamorized violence and the "vigilante hero", and gave the public a misleading representation of death in the wake of the Vietnam War.
The film attracted negative media attention for its heavy graphic content, and there were calls for some theaters to drop the film. But you know, bad buzz is still buzz and that translated to a pretty good run in theaters, earning up to $3 million in its initial run. Even to this day, the film is polarizing due to its violence and themes. But Craven just made his name well known.
  • Budget: $90,000.
  • Domestic gross: $3,100,000. ($23.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $3,100,000.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

"A nice American family. They didn't want to kill. But they didn't want to die."
His second film. The film stars Susan Lanier, Michael Berryman and Dee Wallace. The film follows the Carters, a suburban family targeted by a family of cannibal savages after becoming stranded in the Nevada desert.
Craven wanted to make a non-horror, but he found that his investors only wanted films with graphic content. At the New York Public Library, Craven checked the library's forensics department, and learned of the legend of Sawney Bean - the alleged head of a 48-person Scottish clan responsible for the murder and cannibalization of more than one thousand people. He drew influences from this, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Grapes of Wrath. Craven also had to cut a lot of scenes to avoid getting an X rating.
The film once again drew negative attention for its violence. But it made over $25 million at the box office, which was an even bigger success than House. It subsequently earned a cult following.
  • Budget: $700,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,000,000. ($128.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,000,000.

Deadly Blessing (1981)

"Pray you're not blessed."
His third film. It stars Ernest Borgnine, Maren Jensen, Susan Buckner, and Sharon Stone, and tells the story of a strange figure committing murder in a contemporary community that is not far from another community that believes in ancient evil and curses.
It received negative reviews, but it was another box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,279,042. ($28.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,279,042.

Swamp Thing (1982)

"Science transformed him into a monster. Love changed him even more!"
His fourth film. Based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, it stars Louis Jourdan and Adrienne Barbeau. It tells the story of scientist Alec Holland who is transformed into the monster known as Swamp Thing through laboratory sabotage orchestrated by the evil Anton Arcane. Later, he helps a woman named Alice Cable and battles the man responsible for it all, the ruthless Arcane.
The film made $2.5 million domestically, despite mixed reviews.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $2,500,000. ($8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,500,000.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

"If Nancy doesn't wake up screaming, she won't wake up at all."
His fifth film. It stars Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Johnny Depp, and Robert Englund. The film's plot concerns a group of teenagers who are targeted by Freddy Krueger, an undead child killer who can murder people through their dreams, as retribution against their parents who burned him alive.
The film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the Los Angeles Times in the 1970s about Hmong refugees, who, after fleeing to the United States because of war and genocide in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, suffered disturbing nightmares and refused to sleep. Some of the men died in their sleep soon after. This, along with the song "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright, motivated Craven to craft a horror film focused on people dying through their sleep.
The film's villain, Freddy Krueger, is drawn from Craven's early life. One night, a young Craven saw an elderly man walking on the sidepath outside the window of his home. The man stopped to glance at a startled Craven and walked off. This served as the inspiration for Krueger. Initially, Fred Krueger was intended to be a child molester, but Craven eventually characterized him as a child murderer to avoid being accused of exploiting a spate of highly publicized child molestation cases that occurred in California around the time of the film's production. He settled on the name Freddy Krueger, which was based on a childhood bully of his.
The process of writing the film went smoothly, the real problem was finding a studio. Craven sent it to most studios, and all rejected it. The first studio to show interest was Disney, but Craven declined their offer as they wanted a more toned-down kid-friendly PG-13 flick. When Paramount and Universal also turned it down, Craven decided to go to the independent studio New Line Cinema. The studio only distributed films, but they agreed in financing the film. As they lacked the financial resources for the production, New Line had to turn to external financiers.
Despite opening in just 165 theaters, the film earned $1.2 million in its opening weekend, making it clear that it would be an immediate box office success. It eventually closed with $25 million domestically, and $57 million worldwide. It received critical acclaim, and has been referred as one of the best and most influential slashers ever made. Freddy Krueger would soon be hailed as one of the most emblematic figures of horror, and Craven quickly earned a reputation as a horror legend. But most importantly, it was the beginning of New Line Cinema as a studio, which is why it's referred as "the house that Freddy built."
The film would later spawn a franchise, although Craven wouldn't direct any of the "sequels." Why the quotation marks? We'll get to that later on.
  • Budget: $1,100,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,624,448. ($77 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $57,185,134.

The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1985)

"So you think you're lucky to be alive."
His sixth film. The sequel to The Hills Have Eyes, it stars Tamara Stafford, Kevin Spirtas, John Bloom, Michael Berryman, Penny Johnson, Janus Blythe, John Laughlin, Willard E. Pugh, Peter Frechette and Robert Houston. It follows a group of bikers who become stranded in the desert and find themselves fighting off a family of inbred cannibals who live off the land.
The film was shot on a very low budget, and it simply ended prematurely because they ran out of funds. There are no box office numbers available, but it received awful reviews.

Deadly Friend (1986)

"There's no one alive who'll play with the girl next door."
His seventh film. Based on the novel Friend by Diana Henstell, it stars Matthew Laborteaux, Kristy Swanson, Michael Sharrett, Anne Twomey, Richard Marcus, and Anne Ramsey. Its plot follows a teenage computer prodigy who implants a robot's processor into the brain of his teenage neighbor after she is pronounced brain dead; the experiment proves successful, but she swiftly begins a killing spree in their neighborhood.
Craven wanted to make a PG-rated science fiction film, with a similar tone to Starman, hoping to prove that he could make something that wasn't horror-themed. An unfinished version of the film was screened to a test audience of Craven's fanbase, and it was poorly received for its lack of violence and gore like his previous films. So WB decided to rewrite the film, adding more scenes with tons of gore. This made the final film appear tonally jumbled, and it went from easy PG to struggling to not get an X rating.
The film was poorly received for its story and inconsistent tone. It also marked a huge flop at the box office, not even hitting $10 million. Craven lost interest in the film after WB inserted their own version, and he has since disowned the film.
  • Budget: $11,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,988,731. ($25.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,988,731.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

"Don't bury me, I'm not dead!"
His eighth film. It stars Bill Pullman, and is loosely based on the life of ethnobotanist Wade Davis, recounting his experiences in Haiti investigating the story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was allegedly poisoned, buried alive, and revived with a herbal brew which produced what was called a zombie.
The film received mixed reactions, but it was a much needed box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $7,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,595,031. ($51.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,595,031.

Shocker (1989)

"No more Mr. Nice Guy."
His ninth film. It stars Michael Murphy, Peter Berg, Cami Cooper, and Mitch Pileggi, and follows a serial killer who uses electricity to come back from the dead and carry out his vengeance on the football player who turned him in to the police.
Another mixed bag for Craven, but it was still profitable.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $16,554,699. ($41.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,554,699.

The People Under the Stairs (1991)

"In every neighborhood, there's one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid."
His tenth film. It stars Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, and A. J. Langer. The plot follows a young boy and two adult robbers who become trapped in a house belonging to a neighborhood's crooked landlords after breaking in to steal their collection of gold coins as the boy learns a dark secret about them and what also lurks in their house.
After a slate of mixed performers, the film received Craven's best reviews since Elm Street. To the surprise of Universal, it was also a box office success.
  • Budget: $6,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $24,204,154. ($55.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,347,154.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

"This time, the terror doesn't stop at the screen."
His 11th film. The installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, it stars Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Miko Hughes and John Saxon. The film is not part of the same continuity as previous films, and it portrays Freddy Krueger as a fictional movie villain who invades the real world and haunts the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him.
While Craven co-wrote the franchise's third installment, Dream Warriors, he wasn't that involved with the rest of the franchise. He wanted to make a deliberately more cerebral film than recent entries to the franchise, as he considered them as being cartoonish, and not faithful to his original themes. Specifically, he wanted Freddy to resemble his original vision: far darker and less comical. To reinforce this, the character's make-up and outfit were enhanced, with one of the most prominent differences being that he now wears a long blue/black trenchcoat. In addition, the signature glove was redesigned for a more organic look, with the fingers resembling bones and having muscle textures in between.
The film received high praise, and was considered as the best film in the franchise since the original (it was Englund's favorite). But the franchise has been bleeding interest at the box office, and New Nightmare unfortunately had to suffer. It was profitable, but it became the lowest grossing film in the franchise.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $18,090,181. ($38.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,721,741.

Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

"A comic tale of horror and seduction."
His 12th film. It stars Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison, John Witherspoon, Zakes Mokae, and Joanna Cassidy. It follows a Caribbean vampire who seduces a Brooklyn police officer who has no idea that she is half-vampire.
The film had awful reviews, and despite the presence of a huge star like Eddie Murphy, it disappointed at the box office. Craven really needed a hit.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,751,736. ($40.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $34,951,736.

Scream (1996)

"Someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far."
His 13th film. It stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich and Drew Barrymore. Set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, Scream's plot follows high school student Sidney Prescott and her friends, who, on the anniversary of her mother's murder, become the targets of a costumed serial killer known as Ghostface.
As he was trying to make it in the industry, Kevin Williamson watched a Turning Point documentary about serial killer Danny Rolling which he said left him unsettled. Williamson later noticed an open window, armed himself with a knife, and called his friend for support. The pair began discussing horror characters that had resonated with them such as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. This experience prompted Williamson to start developing a concept wherein a girl is haunted by a caller.
He started writing a film titled Scary Movie, and even left an outline for possible sequels. The concept was part of an era where there was debate over the influence of cinematic violence on audience, with Williamson coming up with a brilliant line "movies don't create psychos, movies make psychos more creative." It was inspired by many 1980s slashers, even though the genre was on decline by that point. His characters were intentionally designed to be knowledgeable about these horror films and their typical elements, with the intention of creating a unique killer who was not only aware of horror film clichés but also exploited them for his own advantage.
While Williamson struggled with his previous films, this script was part of a bidding war with the studios, to the point that Oliver Stone himself wanted to direct it. Miramax (through Dimension Films) bought the script, and Williamson made some rewrites to scale back the violence. Bob Weinstein also wanted to change the name, as he believed the audiences would think the film is a comedy.
The studio considered Danny Boyle, Tom McLoughlin, Sam Raimi, Robert Rodriguez, George A. Romero, Quentin Tarantino, and Anthony Waller as prime candidates to direct the film, but they all preferred to view the film as a comedy. Wes Craven was considered, but the studio believed he couldn't direct a satire. Craven also wasn't planning on directing it, as he wanted to focus on more mainstream films to salvage his career. Craven's assistant Julie Plec (who would collaborate with Williamson on The Vampire Diaries) convinced him in helming the project. By signing, Craven decided to get back some of the gore that was missing in the previous drafts.
A huge contrast to the horror films of the era was that the film had established actors as the leads, as Craven and Williamson wanted to prove that no character was safe. Drew Barrymore had already starred in a few recognizable names, Neve Campbell was on the hit show Party of Five, Rose McGowan was known for Encino Man and The Doom Generation, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich were recognizable supporting characters, and Courteney Cox obviously was known for Friends. Vince Vaughn and Natasha Lyonne were the preferred choices for Billy and Tatum, but external problems caused them to drop out.
After viewing the dailies raw footage, the Weinsteins criticized the quality of Craven's work as "workmanlike at best", believing it lacked tension and had an inconsistent tone. The Weinsteins also disliked the mask design, and said Barrymore lacked sex appeal because of the pageboy hairstyle she had chosen. While filming the final fight, Campbell's stuntwoman accidentally stabbed Ulrich with an umbrella tip, missing the protective vest he was wearing and hitting the site of an open heart surgery Ulrich had as a child. During post-production, Harvey Weinstein decided to name the film as Scream based on the Michael and Janet Jackson song.
In a surprising move, the Weinsteins decided to release the film during the holiday season as counter-programming, offering teenagers an alternative to more traditional holiday fare. The decision was unpopular with the cast and crew, with Williamson expecting the film to fail. The film opened with $6.4 million and finishing in fourth place, leading analysts to consider the film as a bomb.
But the film just kept growing.
Buoyed by positive word of mouth, the Weinsteins increased marketing and the film managed to increase in its second and third weekends. It closed with $103 million domestically and $173 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing slasher film ever and Craven's highest grossing film ever. The film received critical acclaim for its characters and writing, and has since been deemed as one of the most influential horror films of all time. It rekindled interest in horror, resurrected Craven's career and launched the careers of Williamson and the cast.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $103,046,663. ($245.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $173,046,663.

Scream 2 (1997)

"Someone has taken their love of sequels one step too far."
His 14th film. The sequel to Scream, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jamie Kennedy, Laurie Metcalf, Jerry O'Connell, Elise Neal, Timothy Olyphant, Jada Pinkett, and Liev Schreiber. The film takes place two years after the first film and again follows the character of Sidney Prescott, along with other survivors of the Woodsboro massacre, at the fictional Windsor College in Ohio where they are targeted by a copycat killer using the guise of Ghostface.
As Williamson already had plans for sequels, the idea was for Sidney to attend college while being stalked by a copycat Ghostface killer. As filming began, Williamson's script had four killers: Derek, Hallie, Cotton Weary, and Nancy Loomis. But after Williamson transferred his script to the production, it was leaked onto the Internet in full, revealing the identity of the killers and a large amount of the involved plot. This resulted in the production continuing to film with only a partial script while Williamson conducted extensive rewrites, changing much of the film's finale, the identities of the film's killers and drastically altering the roles of other characters such as Randy Meeks and Joel. With a short deadline, Williamson couldn't fully compromise on the final script, forcing Craven to fill in the gaps himself. So the film was one of the very first cases where the Internet leaked major aspects of a film.
As the Weinsteins wanted the film ready for December, it was able to capitalize on the audience's word of mouth to the original. It opened with $32 million in its first weekend, almost five times as big as the original, and the biggest December debut. It didn't hold as great as the original due to the competition, such as Titanic, but it still made $172.3 million worldwide, almost matching the original's gross. It also received very positive reviews, and so a profitable franchise was already underway.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,363,301. ($237.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $172,363,301.

Music of the Heart (1999)

"She gave them a gift they could never imagine. They gave the system a fight it would never forget."
His 15th film. The film stars Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn, Angela Bassett, Gloria Estefan, Jane Leeves, Kieran Culkin and Jay O. Sanders. The film is a dramatization of the true story of Roberta Guaspari, who co-founded the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music and fought for music education funding in New York City public schools.
After seeing the documentary Small Wonders, Craven was inspired to make a full-length film about Guaspari. Madonna was originally signed to play the role of Guaspari, but left the project before filming began, citing "creative differences" with Craven. When she left, Madonna had already studied for many months to play the violin. Streep learned to play Bach's Concerto for 2 Violins for the film. The project marked a huge departure for Craven; it was his first and only film to be rated PG, and his only one to not be horror or thriller.
It received generally positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office. It received 2 Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song, the only Craven film to get any noms.
  • Budget: $27,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,859,394. ($27.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,936,407.

Scream 3 (2000)

"The most terrifying scream is always the last."
His 16th film. The third installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette, Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey, Scott Foley, Lance Henriksen, Matt Keeslar, Jenny McCarthy, Emily Mortimer, Deon Richmond, and Patrick Warburton. The film's story takes place one year after the previous film's events and follows Sidney Prescott, who has gone into self-imposed isolation following the events of the previous two films but is drawn to Hollywood after a new Ghostface begins killing the cast of the film within a film Stab 3.
The plans for a sequel were already underway since Williamson sold the script, although Williamson still didn't write a script yet. When the Weinsteins approached him to write the film, Williamson was already busy with many projects (including his directorial debut), and was unavailable to perform his duties. He only made a 20-page outline wherein Ghostface would return just as production on a fictional film Stab 3 would be filmed. His plan was to show the killers were part of a Stab fan club (this idea would later be adapted into his show, The Following). With Williamson not available, Ehren Kruger was tasked in writing.
Shortly before production began on the film, the Columbine High School massacre took place, and many parties began looking for reasoning behind the shooters' actions and there came an increased scrutiny on the role of the media in society, including video games and film, and the influence it could have on an audience. With production of Scream 3 not yet underway, there were considerations about whether the film should be made at that time, aware of the potential for negative attention but the studio decided to press forward, albeit with changes.
The Weinsteins demanded to scale back on the gore and emphasize its satiric humor, as well as moving the setting to Hollywood. At one point in the production, the studio went as far as demanding that the film feature no blood or on-screen violence at all, a drastic departure for the series, but Craven directly intervened. One of the aspects changed was that the killer would be revealed to be Stu Macher, having survived the original film. The Weinsteins changed it after Columbine, as they didn't want to associate violence and murder with a high school setting.
The film opened with $34.7 million, a franchise record and the biggest February debut ever. But it had weak legs, although it still made a very profitable $161.8 million worldwide. While the previous films were well-received, this film received negative reviews, who lambasted the film for becoming the very own thing it satirizes.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $89,143,175. ($178.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $161,834,276.

Cursed (2005)

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
His 17th film. It stars Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson, Jesse Eisenberg, Judy Greer, Scott Baio, Milo Ventimiglia, Shannon Elizabeth and Mýa, and follows two orphaned siblings attacked by a werewolf loose in Los Angeles.
Kevin Williamson started working on a script that followed the exploits of a New York City serial killer who discovers that his lethal tendencies are due to his lycanthrope nature. When one of his projects was scrapped, Craven decided to direct, teaming them up again for another Scream reunion. But it wasn't planned like that. Craven was making a film, Pulse, when Bob Weinstein abruptly pulled the movie from the schedule ten days before shooting and cut through all the slow lanes, wanting Craven to get to Cursed as soon as possible. Craven was reportedly not pleased so Weinstein doubled his pay in order for him to direct the film. The director deemed the script too tonally similar to his film Vampire in Brooklyn, but felt pressured by the studio, leading him to ultimately sign on.
The film started filming in January 2003, hoping to get the film released in August. In June, they only had six days left for filming. Suddenly, Dimension Films decided to put the movie on hold because top executives at the company weren't happy with the film's ending or how the special effects were progressing, specifically the look of the film's lead lupine. Rick Baker was preparing the final transformation effects when production stopped and asked Weinstein to let his team finish the work in order for it to be ready for the reshoot, but he refused. Patrick Lussier was brought in for massive rewrites, and the film didn't return to production until November. Baker was fired, and the prosthetic make-up was replaced with CGI. Skeet Ulrich filmed his scene as one of the leads, but chose to drop out following the reshoots as he disliked the new direction. It was also heavily edited to get the R rating down to PG-13. The budget was originally $35 million, yet some reports suggest it ballooned all the way to $100 million, making it one of the most expensive horror films ever.
With that budget, it was clear it was not going to be a box office success. It flopped with just $29 million worldwide, and was panned by critics. Craven himself dislikes the final product, and a director's cut was never an option because his original ending was never filmed.
  • Budget: $100,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,297,522. ($30.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $29,621,722.

Red Eye (2005)

"Fear takes flight."
His 18th film. It stars Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, and Brian Cox. The story follows a hotel manager ensnared in an assassination plot by a terrorist while aboard a red-eye flight to Miami.
The film received Craven's best reviews in years, and was a box office success, earning almost $100 million. While he is fine with people loving it, Cillian Murphy is not really fond of the film, "I love Rachel McAdams and we had fun making it but I don’t think it's a good movie. It’s a good B movie."
  • Budget: $26,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $57,891,803. ($92.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $96,258,201.

My Soul to Take (2010)

"Only one has the power to save their souls."
His 19th film. It stars Max Thieriot, Denzel Whitaker, Raul Esparza, and Shareeka Epps. It follows Adam "Bug" Hellerman, who is one of seven teenagers chosen to die following the anniversary of a serial killer's death.
This was Craven's first film in almost two decades where he would be directing, producing and writing. But that didn't pan out to a success: it was a critical and commercial dud.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,744,435. ($21.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,500,813.

Scream 4 (2011)

"New decade. New rules."
His 20th and final film. The fourth installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anthony Anderson, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Marielle Jaffe, Erik Knudsen, Mary McDonnell, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella, and Roger L. Jackson. The film takes place on the fifteenth anniversary of the original Woodsboro murders from Scream and involves Sidney Prescott returning to the town after ten years, where Ghostface once again begins killing students from Woodsboro High.
In 2010, Williamson and Craven confirmed their plans for a new film. Craven said that endless sequels, the modern spew of remakes, film studios, and directors are the butts of parodies in the film. The main characters have to figure out where the horror genre is in current days to figure out the modern events happening to and around them. This was the first film in the franchise to use CGI, with the knife's blade added in post-production.
Even though the franchise was profitable, it seemed like its glory days were long behind it by the time it hit theaters. The film disappointed in its opening weekend with just $18 million, and closed with a weak $97 million worlwide, far less than the previous films. It also received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and new characters. It was the last film directed by Craven before his death in 2015.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $38,180,928. ($53 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $97,231,420.

The Verdict

Quite inconsistent, but a very iconic figure in the horror genre. You know you made it big when your creations include Elm Street and Scream. Craven often struggled with difficult productions (you can blame the Weinsteins for that), but he still managed to make competent and scary films, even if some are better than others. Some even see critical re-appraisal as time passes; even Scream 3 and Scream 4 have their fans. We don't know what he would've done with the franchise after the fourth film, but he made it clear he was exhausted by having to film without finished scripts. Rest in Peace to a horror legend.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Clint Eastwood. I think I'll have to make two posts, given that he directed 42 films.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Ang Lee. A legendary Asian director.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 13-19 Clint Eastwood Great actor. Great director.
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
Who should be next after Lee? That's up to you. And there's a theme.
And that theme is: controversial directors. I'm talking directors who have attained a polarizing response to their films (like Zack Snyder), or the directors themselves are also controversial figures in real life (like Oliver Stone). Basically, a director that has as many fans as haters.

2024.05.10 20:23 HotEntranceTrain Reinforcement learning for automated trading

Reinforcement learning - RL is a branch of machine learning that deals with learning from interaction with an environment. RL agents learn by trial and error, taking actions and receiving rewards or penalties based on the outcomes. RL agents aim to maximize their cumulative rewards over time by finding the optimal policy or strategy for each situation.

Reinforcement learning has many applications in various domains, such as robotics, games, healthcare, etc. One of the most promising and challenging applications of RL is automated trading. Automated trading is the process of using computer programs to execute trades in financial markets without human intervention. Automated trading can help investors to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and exploit market opportunities.

However, automated trading is not a trivial task. Financial markets are complex, dynamic, noisy, and uncertain. Traditional methods based on fixed rules or historical data may not be able to adapt to changing market conditions or capture hidden patterns. Therefore, reinforcement learning can be a powerful tool for automated trading, as it can learn from online feedback and optimize its performance in an end-to-end manner.

There are different types of reinforcement learning algorithms that can be used for automated trading, depending on the problem formulation and the learning objective. Some of the common types are:

- Value-based methods: These methods learn a value function that estimates the expected return of each state or state-action pair. The agent then chooses the action that maximizes the value function. Examples of value-based methods are Q-learning, SARSA, and Deep Q-Network (DQN).
- Policy-based methods: These methods learn a policy function that directly maps each state to an action or a probability distribution over actions. The agent then follows the policy function to choose an action. Examples of policy-based methods are REINFORCE, Actor-Critic, and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO).
- Model-based methods: These methods learn a model of the environment that predicts the next state and reward given the current state and action. The agent then uses the model to plan ahead and choose an action. Examples of model-based methods are Dyna-Q, Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), and Model Predictive Control (MPC).

To illustrate how these algorithms work, let us consider an example of using reinforcement learning for automated stock trading using historical data from 30 Dow Jones stocks from 1/1/2011 to 1/1/2021.

- Value-based method: We can use Q-learning to learn a Q-function that estimates the expected return of each state-action pair. The state can be defined as a vector of features that describe the current market situation, such as stock prices, indicators, portfolio holdings, etc. The action can be defined as a discrete choice among buying, selling, or holding each stock. The reward can be defined as the profit or loss incurred by taking an action. We can use a neural network to approximate the Q-function and update it using the Bellman equation. We can then use an epsilon-greedy exploration strategy to choose an action that maximizes the Q-function with some probability of random exploration.
- Policy-based method: We can use PPO to learn a policy function that directly outputs a probability distribution over actions given a state. The state can be defined as in the value-based method. The action can be defined as a continuous vector that represents the percentage of portfolio allocation for each stock. The reward can be defined as in the value-based method. We can use a neural network to approximate the policy function and update it using a clipped surrogate objective function that balances exploration and exploitation. We can then use a stochastic sampling strategy to choose an action according to the policy function.
- Model-based method: We can use MPC to learn a model of the environment that predicts the next state and reward given the current state and action. The state, action, and reward can be defined as in the policy-based method. We can use a neural network to approximate the model function and update it using supervised learning on historical data. We can then use an optimization algorithm such as gradient descent or genetic algorithm to find an action that maximizes the expected return over a finite horizon.

These are some examples of how reinforcement learning algorithms can be used for automated trading. However, there are many challenges and limitations that need to be addressed before applying RL to real-world trading scenarios. Some of these challenges are:

- Data quality: RL relies on high-quality data to learn effectively. However, financial data may be noisy, incomplete, or inaccurate due to various factors, such as market manipulation, human errors, or technical issues. Therefore, RL agents need to preprocess and validate the data before using it for training or testing. Moreover, RL agents need to deal with the non-stationarity of the data, which means that the data distribution may change over time due to market evolution or regime shifts. Therefore, RL agents need to update their models and policies periodically or adaptively to cope with the changing environment.
- Exploration-exploitation trade-off: RL agents need to balance between exploration and exploitation, which means that they need to try new actions to discover better ones while exploiting the current best actions to maximize rewards. However, exploration and exploitation have different costs and benefits in financial markets. Exploration may incur losses or risks due to taking suboptimal or uncertain actions. Exploitation may lead to missed opportunities or overfitting due to sticking to a local optimum or ignoring new information. Therefore, RL agents need to design appropriate exploration strategies that can balance the trade-off and achieve long-term optimal performance.
- Reward design: RL agents need to define a reward function that reflects their learning objective and guides their behavior. However, reward design is not a trivial task in financial markets. Different investors may have different preferences and constraints, such as risk appetite, return expectation, transaction cost, etc. Therefore, RL agents need to customize their reward functions according to their specific goals and scenarios. Moreover, reward functions need to be consistent and informative, which means that they need to align with the desired outcomes and provide sufficient feedback for learning.
- Evaluation metrics: RL agents need to evaluate their performance and compare their results with other methods or baselines. However, evaluation metrics are not straightforward in financial markets. Simple metrics such as cumulative return or win rate may not capture the true quality of a trading strategy. They may be influenced by luck, randomness, or market trends. Therefore, RL agents need to use more sophisticated metrics that can account for various factors, such as risk-adjusted return, drawdowns, volatility, etc. Moreover, RL agents need to use proper testing methods that can avoid data snooping or overfitting biases, such as cross-validation, backtesting, or paper trading.

These are some of the challenges and limitations that reinforcement learning faces when applied to automated trading. However, these challenges also provide opportunities for further research and improvement in this field. Reinforcement learning has shown great potential and promise for automated trading and has attracted increasing attention from both academia and industry. With more data availability, computational power, and algorithmic innovation, reinforcement learning can achieve better performance and efficiency for automated trading in the future.
