2024.05.16 10:05 excellent_taco What would you do with £4000? Buy missing years of NI, bolster to FTB house deposit, or invest the cash?

Here's my situation: 36yo, British citizen but spent much of my life overseas in various places. Returned to the UK in 2018 for the first time as a working adult. Subsequently, I only have 6 fully paid up years in my national insurance record and I'll need to contribute for another 29 years to receive the full state pension. That doesn't give me a lot of wiggle room, and means I would need to work every single year bar three up until state pension age to receive the full benefit, which I guess can't be guaranteed if you factor in possible unexpected illness, caring duties, moving overseas for a couple of years, etc..
I know I can buy previous missing years for around £824 each, but the deadline for that is fast approaching: from April 2025, the 13 'gap' years I have between 2006-2018 I will no longer have the option of buying.
I'm also looking to buy my first house with my partner early next year. All going to plan it would probably be just before the NI buy back deadline kicks in (and ideally before the stamp duty threshold reverts back up to the lower level...)
I'm trying to weigh up what the smartest thing to do long term/what would give the best return:

Option1: Take ~£4000 and buy 5 missing years before I lose the option to, giving me more breathing room with the number of remaining years required to contribute (as wouldn't be constrained to working 29 of the next 32 years in the UK and would reach the 35 year NI threshold earlier). That £4000 would then be worth more in retirement than the intial 'investment', assuming I live at least 5 years past 68 which of course is not guaranteed. I also don't really believe that by the time I am of govt sanctioned "retirement age" somewhere around 2056, that the state pension will even exist, or exist in its current form. For my generation, it feels like it will be a fraction of what retirees today enjoy.
Option2: Keep the £4000 in my house deposit fund. Higher deposit = better LTV = better interest rate and lower repayments. That £4000 larger deposit would save me about £7500 in total paid over the life of a 30yr loan by rough calculations and current interest rates. Also, on the ladder a bit sooner, mortgage free sooner maybe... Lower repayments mean more of my income available to invest in other things.
Option3: Take the £4000 and add it to my SIPP, or some other long term S&S ISA, S&P500... let the market do the growing, hope to get 8% returns? That £4k could be £40k over 30 years.

Other relevant factors:

Decent income £90kpa but self employed in semi-volatile industry (Partner has similar income but is salaried.)
We're hoping to have a combined £85-95k deposit (exclusing fees etc) by beginning of next year, for a ~550k property. My portion of the deposit will be around £60k. I will have more to cover fees, plus an emergency savings fund.
My current pension situation is not great for my age: £8k in a SIPP I just started 6mo ago, and about £20k in other pension pots in other countries I've lived in. I'm aggresively contributing to SIPP now and plan to continue.
No health concerns
No kids
I love where I live now, but I've always enjoyed living in other countries and I can't imagine myself exlusively living/working in the UK for the next 30+ years. This is kind of the only thing that makes buying missing NI years make any sense to me - to 'buy' myself more opportunities outside of the UK during my working years.

Am I missing something really obvious? If I moved overseas for 5 years at some point in the next couple of decades, could I just voluntarily contribute NI each of those years to keep myself on track to reach the 35 year threshold? Is state pension kind of a waste of time and I'd be better investing my money/time into the sharemarket? Should I not worry about increasing my deposit by such a small amount cos inflation and property price increase eats the 'real' cost of the mortgage in the long run? Will the sun blow up before any of this is relevant and I should just enjoy my life?! Help!

Obtain the software and install it on the TrueNAS-enabling device. Installing can then begin. Two approaches are mentioned below to accomplish that:

Include it into something.
Make a bootable drive.

Get the TrueNAS CORE installation tool and put it on a DVD or USB stick so you can add the program to a device. Next, connect the unit to your PC.
To make a drive that works, you need to use a tool to copy the setup software to a USB stick and then set up the stick to boot. In general, the second way is faster and easier than adding the software by hand.
Step 2. Restart the computer and choose the installation drive as the startup drive.
Upon completion of the previous step, restart the system.
Once more the installation options will appear. Hit Enter or click OK to start configuring the TrueNAS core.
Next, you'll see the TrueNAS computer setup options. Click Install/Update to initiate TrueNAS CORE setup.
A list of the available drives is displayed on the following screen. Go for the boot drive instead of the file disk. If you're not sure which one is the boot device, check the disk sizes. Usually, the start device is smaller than the storage disk; to access it, use Space and the arrow keys.
There will appear an alert window. Go ahead and hit Yes and OK.
Step 3. Start over to start building.
Next, restart TrueNAS CORE so that you can start setting it up. Any changes you make to TrueNAS while it is still being set up need to be restarted for them to take effect.
You have to restart because not doing so will undo all the changes you made during the download. The device will also start up with the new software and operating system.
Step 4. Run the application.
After the computer restarts, proceed with the installation and configuration of TrueNAS.
Selecting between UEFI and BIOS booting TrueNAS CORE is now your task. The software will select one of the two depending on how you configure it. For those who are unaware, most of the time UEFI functions best with newer hardware and BIOS with older hardware. Furthermore influencing the choice will be the operating system and software requirements.
Finishing the process should just take a few minutes.
Step 5. Hard Restart and Delete the Install Communications
When installation is finished, a message will appear advising you to restart the machine and delete the installation files. To restart, click OK before removing the program CDs. Then you're through.

Software Recovery of TrueNAS Data

While they might not always be successful, there are methods to restore TrueNAS data.

Many factors influence how quickly you can recover lost data on TrueNAS CORE, including the type of data and how long ago it was lost.Regular backups are the best way to keep your info safe.

The main subject is a person who goes by "Elica Le Bon" online who has gain some following since 2022 on Instagram, TikTok, and X (formally know as Twitter). She has other platforms that she promotes her artistic endeavors, but they seem to be inactive and had gain little traction. Elica Le Bon is a first-generation Iranian immigrant who according to Piers Morgan and herself was born in Iran, moved to the UK to seek asylum. Elica garnered her following across most social media platforms during the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement in 2022, in 2022 protest had broke out over the death of Mahsa Jina Amini, after she died from her injuries sustained by the brutal assault committed by the morality police of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) over Iran's strict hijab law. Elica's position against the IRGC and the Iranian Regime has been consistent since up to date. However, it is unclear what her position is when it comes to who shall take power over Iran if and when it does the current regime falls.
When it comes to the topic of Israel and Palestinians, Elica's had acknowledged Palestinians briefly in her Blog titled "My People, Your People" dating back to 14/11/2015. She had also made Pro-Palestinian statements numerous times on her X account (formally known as Twitter), as seen in screenshots below.

That shift was described in her interview with Noah Tishby on Israeli Channel 12 where she claimed her friend's immediate support of Palestine soon after the attack committed by Hamas "chilled" her to her "core" because that meant to her that they "must hate me (her) so much". If you open her linktr.ee found on her instagram, you can see she has an an email for the public to contact her. If you search that same public email on google, it reveals that the email is somehow linked to 2 other last names that share the same first name, N. Mojtahed-Zadeh and Zadeh.

If Elica "Le Bon" is indeed the same person as Elica N. Mojtahed-Zadeh or Zadeh, which there is not strong evidence to show otherwise, we can she start to uncover who had raised her into the person she is today. A quick google search of her last name, Mojtahed-Zadeh, you can see another notable person that goes by the name Pirouz Mojtahedzadeh. According to his page on wikipedia, you may discover that he has quite the connection to the IRGC. Pirouz has articles ligitimiing the IRI. Even articles argueing for the IRI to have nuclear power. He writes his pieces with a man strongly tied to the IRI. Noteable to add that her father has since tried to burry his past, and posts Monarchist Propoganda on instagram now under the name u/pirouz_mojtahedzadeh
Now previously, Pirouz has publicly supported the IRGC in his social media account, including the statement and video he had posted on X on 07/01/2020. Pirouz in the same video appears to also show support to Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian commander, who was assassinated by an airstrike ordered by former president, Donald J. Trump.

My personal experience: I run Linux with docker and smb and call it a day. Mostly Ubuntu, but used arch for a long time as well. For storage I used zfs but now settled on btrfs due to drive flexibility. Tested out TrueNAS Scale but I find it more confusing and complex compared to just Linux. Just a few weeks ago I "migrated" (created a fresh Ubuntu install) my bare metal Linux into a VM inside of proxmox. Not super happy with proxmox but I will use it for longer.

I know that the problem of evil/theodicy are long debated issues, and I'm not looking to have those arguments at this time. That being said, the main reason I'm drawn to Christianity is because of the obvious Truth contained in the moral teachings of Jesus. However, nothing about the world suggests that it was created by anything that was in any way morally good.
Nearly all forms of life depend on the death and consumption of other life forms to survive. Why would perfectly good being create that? Why would any entity that wasn't explicitly sadistic and cruel create that? Why do all things suffer and die? Why does disease exist? Why do some people live happier lives than others? Why do some people live easier lives than others? Does our world really look, to anyone with eyes that can see, like we live in a world that was made by the source of all Justice?
What hasn't Jesus returned? Why are all of the problems in the world still essentially the same, despite Him coming to show us the Way? How good or true of a Way can it really be if billions of people following it for nearly 2000 years have had almost no impact on making the world truly better in any material way? Has the legacy of Jesus helped at least as many people as it has hurt, and even if it had would that truly be righteous? Are we really just supposed to wait around for a magic man to come down from the clouds and fix the world? Is there some sort of mass action we should be taking instead, or does that not happen until we see the literal Messiah plummet from the sky to Tom Petty's hit song Free Fallin'?
Even if there was some Utopian future where Heaven and Earth were one, that would never be able to justify the suffering and pain that all living things must experience. There being some positive moments in our lives is not an excuse; that is the flawed logic that keeps people in abuse relationships. Free will is not an excuse, it just makes the question apply to free will, and thus the God that created it. God being neither good nor evil is also a bad answer, because there is no justifiable reason to seek out an amoral path.
Am I missing something? I mean this all completely genuinely, these things bother me severely. I grew up ELCA, became an atheist, and now follow a very esoteric form of primarily Christian thought. I want to believe, and I want to really live like Jesus. But it's hard to believe, and it's hard to actually live like Jesus when there is no clear indication that doing so improves either your own life or the world around you. Serious replies only, and know that I won't be convinced by anything that just attempts to handwave these issues.

4 years ago, I made the tough decision to cut abusive family members out of my life. Since then, I’ve worked through many of the traumas that have happened to me (through therapy) but get stuck in my practice when I try to let go of the hate and anger I feel towards these people. I understand forgiveness is not about the abusers, but rather accepting that you can’t change your past and recognizing that the people who hurt me were broken too. Although it hurts to hold on to these grudges, it also feels good to hurt them back in my mind by thinking about ways I wish I would have responded or ways I could have hurt them. It feels like a sense of control over a situation I had no control over growing up, and gives me a false sense of justice for what they did. But, as you probably guessed, this has caused me more suffering than anything and I want to let go of this anger and hurt and finally be free. I understand what forgiveness entails and why it’s important, but I can’t seem to find a practical way to implement it in my practice. I’m still fairly new to meditation and starting practicing more seriously 4 years ago when I initially made the decision to cut off my abusers. I guess my question is - what does practical application of forgiveness look like in meditation? Where do I start or what am I missing? Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster here. I started playing in 2020, where I was a Mordekaiser top OTP with a negative winrate. I was Iron 3. I made one change in S13 Split one, switching to Mordekaiser Jungle. I hard carried almost every game, secured almost every objective, got super fed, and climbed like crazy. I had a 72% winrate at one point, but finished S13 Split 1 with a 61% winrate, climbing from Iron 3 to Gold 2. (Side note, in my personal opinion climbing from Iron to Bronze was a lot harder than climbing from bronze to gold). I was very proud of myself and wanted to keep going, although I began having trouble, as well as life getting in the way, meaning I also played less, making me stagnate at Gold 2. Anyways, I'll get to the point. S14 Split one just ended, and I climbed from Silver 4 to Gold 4, which I was very happy about, until today. When I played one game for placements, I was put back into Silver 4. I was furious. Why the fuck did I even play all that for? Only to get placed right back where I started? I finished S14 split 1 with a 56% winrate. Aside from that, the new mastery update really pissed me off. I can honestly say I appreciate the changes made to the system of collecting mastery rewards, but I am really gonna miss the system of collecting mastery points, as well as the old emote, which I had set to R in my keybinds, so that when I ult the ADC, pop ghost, and run them down, I flash my emote. It was glorious. I did the same today, and it just wasn't the same. I'm really frustrated, even though I usually am not. I don't tilt in my games, I don't flame, I ping my teammates with purpose, and I generally make good decisions, and I think I have decent game sense and overall macro. I guess I'm just frustrated since I want to climb, but I don't have the free time to play enough games to climb before the season split ends, putting me right back where I started. Overall, it feels pointless. Gonna take a break from ranked for a month or two to focus on my work and school. Anyone else feel the same?

I have an ergobaby 360 but my son seems to drown in it, even with a newborn insert. He’s 6 weeks old and 9.7lbs so not tiny, but I think this will work better for him when he’s a bit older. In the meantime I want something less fussy and less structured, and breathable for summer (our ergobaby is very thick and seems like it will be better in winter).
I’ve read lots about the Tula FTG and the LennyLamb Light but most of the reviews I can find seem to be sponsored or based on free product samples which I find unreliable. Does anyone have any experience of these and can advise?
One thing to note is that I have quite narrow shoulders so I have a marginal preference for cross back strap, which I know the Tula can’t do, but unlike the Lenny the Tula is available in linen which might outweigh that issue… but am I missing another UK-available brand that might be better?
Before anyone suggests I visit a sling library, yes absolutely but unfortunately my local one is still an hour away and they only do monthly sessions which get booked up several months in advance! The only local lady stopped doing it as she said she didn’t make enough money so there’s no private consultants near me either sadly.

To be honest, I don't currently have any travel plans or airline tickets to return home, but the more I see, the more I want to see.
Yes, it's similar to a narcotic, but a good, completely legal one. Following much thought, this is the initial list. However, I have a feeling that the reasons might shift in a few months.

I enjoy testing my boundaries and pushing myself.

Living in a cozy home, be it a palace, a room, an apartment, or a studio, breeds complacency and laziness. You can shower EVERY day, you know where your belongings are, and you can use the restroom whenever you need to (long-term travelers understand how challenging some of these things may be when you're on the road). To put it briefly, living in a location you call home is (too) simple!
That was altered by travel. One day, you can find me hiking Tasmania's Cradle Mountain, and the next, I'll be sleeping beneath a million stars in the wide Indian desert. Next, I might go diving in the Great Barrier Reef or perhaps skydiving in Lake Taupo at a height of 50,000 feet (okay, so I haven't really done the last one yet, but I've made the reservation).hope for the best! adore spending time with myself
Many people planned their vacations to India, Bali, and Rome in the footsteps of Elizabeth Gilbert and her Eat, Love, Pray adventure, and many more believe that the destination they choose would transform them. Count me among them.
And even though I didn't truly discover who I am or the man I want to marry, this last year has undoubtedly assisted me in freeing up mental space. I was able to separate my complete chaos of a personal life into several categories so that I could prioritize joy and happiness above drama and depression.

I enjoy making new friends.

I think that somewhere inside of me, since I started travelling and was compelled by the circumstances, was my previous self. I recall Sabrina as a young girl, outgoing and unafraid to strike up a conversation. Finding her and persuading her to come out of the shyness closet took some time. Layers of corporate life veiled her, but eventually she broke free, and we have been together ever since. (It's me, in case you missed it.) I've met some wonderful individuals while travelling, and some of my favorite travel-related memories are of times spent with them.

I enjoy taking risks and being uncontrollable.

I used to be a complete control freak who was obsessed with the details of my upcoming day, week, and month. I've had to give it up in favor of the unexpected in the past year—the enchantment of not knowing where you're going, if you're going to sleep, what you're going to do, or who you're going to meet.
I adore that every day is just like this—it's the true spirit of adventure. I have no idea where I will be spending Christmas this year. I have no notion where I'm heading beyond the Pacific Islands; the world is wide open.

TDLR: Ended up spending everything on a lemon, how do I make myself ok with this?
Also, I want to note that I fully understand that this is a privileged problem to have, with so many currently homeless or in the rental crisis.
In 2020 my partner and I built our first house. We were both low income with a dependent so we couldn't afford to build much. We went with a small bit of land in a very cheap suburb. We built our first house on a tight budget. I designed the floor plan, together we picked the finish. It was beautiful. Sadly though the backyard was too small, we couldn't sleep for traffic noise and we had an abusive neighbour. We decided to sell and walked away debt free (including personal loans etc) and over 100k profit, this was the start of the property boom.
Moved into a rental and planned to build a bigger house now finances were a bit better without the debt. Partner bought his dream car but we were left with enough for a build deposit. We purchased rural land and designed an amazing house. Due to job changes though the distance became an issue and we had to sell prior to building as it wasn't feasible. Luck was on our side again though and we made 10k profit from the land.
We planned to build local and purchased land. This is when building prices sky rocketed though and we were struggling to get what we wanted in budget. We also discovered my child needed access to swimming for therapy. Being in a rental the blow up swimming pool was not allowed and was about to cause us huge issues.
We found a house for sale that was large. On 700m2, had a beautiful pool and spa. It was listed for $599,000 to $630,000. The market was extremely competitive, and from previous experience when we sold our first house we went in with our best offer subject to building inspection. We offered $650,000 and had $30,000 left over for house improvements, we planned to heat the pool for our daughter etc. We got the building inspection and that came back with no defects and that the property was in good condition.
We moved In and everything went to hell from there. Turns out the flooring was a DIY and the grout was never sealed or whatever so our feet were constantly black. Even now 6 months later with constant cleaning the tiles always look dirty. We didn't realise things like linen cupboards were gutted. The spa does not work and needs to be chucked (bubbles work but doesn't heat and shorts out)the pool needed massive repairs (all this was meant to be checked by the specialised building inspector) the roof needs 20k of work, there's a leak behind the wall in the bathroom, the electrical work was a DIY job and a safety hazard, it's just endless issues.
Obviously our money quickly went to fixing the safety issues with nothing to spare and nothing to show for it. We can't heat the pool for my daughter so that can only be used in the height of summer. The spa was the back up plan for the dead of winter but that doesn't work and is so old would cost too much to fix. We don't even have access to a bath as she needs me in with her for regulation and it's so small I literally don't fit, I'm now squeezing in everynight and dealing with bad leg cramps each day. We knew the bath was small but figured the spa would be a happy replacement for water regulation. The floors have to be washed twice a day and are doing my head in. Can't fix any of the cosmetic issues like we'd planned.
I'm so angry and disappointed with myself for making the decision to buy this house but also not listening to my intuition. When we inspected the house privately the owners were walking out the front, and the female owner gave me a look and my intuition screamed don't buy, we fell in love though so I ignored it. I'm extremely angry at the building inspector who missed everything, we would not have bought this house with even one major defect since we had such limited liquid funds. I'm angry with my partner because he is not open to selling it and moving on, he wants to settle which I get, he hates moving as does my child, but it will be a very long time before this house has enough equity for any renovations.
How do I deal with the fact I was handed this golden opportunity to have a really nice house for my child and I blew it on this? How do I accept that I should have gotten two building inspections?

Here is an idea I had for my medieval fantasy world. I’ve been thinking about this one for a while. A while back I was thinking about the longterm practicality of a pirate republic. The advice I got said the most successful pirates are those who have a functioning nation to work under.
The island of Liora may be a free place where there are no feudal lords. A place to get away from the likes of kings and clergy. In more recent years it has become a safe haven for criminal organizations and other convicts. People often half jokingly called a Pirate Republic.
Although it is a free place some amount of order would arise. That came in the form of a race called Jetrin who are basically giant clams. Just like clams they have a foot they can use to move but being too big to move on their own is generally considered beautiful. So they are heavily reliant on the other races for day to day care. I kind of wanted them to be like hutts without being giant slugs.
The Jetrin families run all sorts of businesses all over the world. Slavery, prostitution, smuggling, racketeering. You name they probably operate something similar to it somewhere. If not in Liora then maybe in a foreign nation. They usually invest that money in various mercenary companies and hired thugs.
What do you all think? Can a large organization like this really exist? Would clam crimelords be intimidating? Can you imagine a council of clam crimelords? Could these crimelords really hold onto their power in Liora? Did I miss something that may be vital to the defense of the island.
I heard of some pretty scary stuff regarding organized crime. One of which being a very generous pension plan but even this seems huge.
