This might end up as a bit of a weird post. But mostly a very long one. I don’t think this place I’m presenting here is heaven, but without Suburbs Heaven Thursday this subreddit may give viewers the idea that we’re all just hating, and this case study may help illustrate some of the alternatives and what one could like and dislike about them. I know that yelling “the Netherlands!” on any urbanist platform is overdone and so 2 years ago, but I also feel like the available “Netherlands!” content is giving people an incomplete picture. So I’m going to discuss a suburban neighborhood, Lunetten, in Utrecht, where I’ve lived for about a year now. It’s a place built in the 70’s and 80’s, housing about 11,000 people in 5,500ish homes, for a density of just over 4,000 people/km2, 10,000 per square mile.
Obviously that’s pretty dense. In a North American context Lunetten may count more as an example of the “missing middle” than a true suburb, but I feel it still works as a comparison because it is situated at the edge of a city* and it offers features people often look to the suburbs for, like a low noise environment, plenty of green and child oriented features. So, what can we find in this example that people may like or dislike in their suburban areas?
If you want to look along on your favorite online map: 52° 3'53 N, 5° 8'13 E.
Traffic and transit
Lunetten has a clear main road (middle left image, bright pink line on the map) that serves as the main way of getting around by car. It is the only road where the limit is 50 km/h (30 mph), not 30 km/h. The main road has priority over all side roads, indicated by the exits of all side streets being raised a bit. The speed bump automatically makes one slow down to yield to the traffic on the main road. In the places where people’s front doors open towards this main ring there are service roads for them to do their parking and loading and such on. In the busiest part of the ring the road was raised a few meters so pedestrians and cyclists can pass underneath through tunnels. So while the maximum speed cars can go on most of the roads in this place is quite low, the time to destination is pretty good, because a lot was done to ensure a good flow of traffic.
A more debatable feature is the lack of through-traffic options. If you want to leave Lunetten by car there are two roads leading West, connecting to the rest of the city and to the 70km/h raised road that serves as the exit from the city. There is also one small road going South-East along the train line, and that’s it. Despite being next to two highways Lunetten has no direct on- and off-ramp accessing it, and even no direct way across the highways for cars. Cyclists and pedestrians do have options leading in basically all directions. On the one hand this does wonders for how quiet the neighborhood is, but on the other hand that one road taking people in and out of the city is still more prone to blocking than a direct ramp to the highway, so car owners will experience some travel delays because of this.
Lunetten is no public transit hotspot, but there are like two bus lines both going to more connected places including the city’s central hub, and the train station is two stops from said hub as well, which happens to be the biggest train station in the Netherlands.
Public Spaces
Even by Dutch standards Lunetten has a pretty urban-ish density. There’s a mix of mostly rowhouses and midrise apartment buildings, mostly gallery flats up to 5 stories tall, including the ground floor. To give you an idea of Dutch standards for density: I grew up in a commuter town of about the same size as Lunetten, housing 1,000 less people (present day numbers) on roughly 1.25 times the surface**. But what I find interesting is what that space is used for. In Lunetten, on the outer ring of the neighborhood, adjacent to the two highways, busy raised road and train line that surround the neighborhood, there are quite sizable parks (bottom right picture). There’s plenty of space for dogs to run off their leash, there are football/play fields, there are two skate parks, two ponds for amphibians to spend the winter in (granted: that’s an amenity most people could live without) and an entire petting zoo, in case you had doubts this was a suburb. Together with a football/soccer club, a tennis club, some allotment gardens and a small business park near the train station these parks take up most of the space where traffic noise is an issue. There is room for recreation and other daytime activities in the noisy bits (there are sound screens, but that’s not blocking all of the noise) so that peoples’ homes can mostly be in the quiet parts, shielded from noise by trees and stuff. And then there’s the neighborhood interior. You’ll see on the map a few yellow locations marked as “playground/square”, but in reality many, probably most, of the dark green “courtyards” contain a little playground too. All of the courtyards have grass, most if not all of them have trees, many of those trees being taller than the midrises. Some of the courtyards feature parking space as well***. The middle right image is far from the greenest example. The combination of the parks and the courtyards make Lunetten much greener than the actual smallish town I lived in mentioned previously. Plenty of birds live here too, including a bunch of water birds who enjoy the ditches and canals. In the smallish town much more of the space was simply used for row houses with pretty large gardens, and in the newer parts a bunch of four home and two home units and free standing homes as well****.
Which brings me to the reality check. With all these pedestrianized public spaces around and loads of playgrounds, is Lunetten actually a good neighborhood to raise kids? From what I can tell, opinions are mixed. Because one thing that does tend to come with density of people is density of crime. In my year here I have personally witnessed a man snorting coke off his bicycle saddle, in broad daylight, in the middle of a bike lane near a skatepark with playing children in it*****. There is also the occasional lost shopping cart dumped in a canal and apparently there was a pretty shocking supermarket robbery just before I moved in. Especially if your budget only allows for an apartment and not a house I could imagine feeling a little scared to let young children wander around near the house on their own, also maybe because of the canals and ditches they might fall into. The sweet spot age for children in Lunetten is probably around 9-12, old enough to be trusted with their own safety around water and some minor drug use and vandalism, yet young enough to fully enjoy all the outdoor play space.
The blame for the crime is often put on the street pattern that is said to attract drug dealers and the like who love having good get away options, and the many green public spaces and nice dry apartment building entrances are certainly not the worst place a homeless person could go to for another night of hopefully not being bothered by the police. More recently developed neighborhoods have tried to avoid these effects by using a “cauliflower pattern” for their streets, branched streets ending in a bunch of (at least to cars) dead ends. The downside of that pattern seems to be less sense of community. The more direct neighbors you have, the more interaction. That’s why cul-de-sacs can be so isolating after all. Lunetten is not the worst crimey part of its parent city by a long shot, but it’s noticeable enough to be worth mentioning.
A planned neighborhood
The big advantage I think Lunetten has over a lot of other places is that it was designed in one go. The land it was built on was part of the Dutch Water Line******, and had to stay free of buildings and obstructions that would block the firing lines of defending artillery. (That’s what the two weird shapes in the northern park are: old fortifications, called Lunette 3 and 4. Hence the suburb’s name.) When the line was legally disbanded in 1963 Utrecht started planning to build a new neighborhood here. Because of the highways (current configuration built at the same time as the suburb) and the train line that surround the place it was very clear to where the neighborhood would stretch. And it shows. The suburb is designed as a cohesive whole. There’s a neighborhood shopping center (bottom left image and the main soft pink blob on the map) at the heart of the neighborhood. It has two supermarkets, some small other shops, several small fast food/lunch places in different styles, two bicycle shops and repair places (it’s the Netherlands), a restaurant (there’s another one on one of the forts in the park, which doubles as a sort of social work place), a community center which houses some clubs and such (not the scouts, those have a place in one of the parks) as well as a library. There’s even a bar (I think, I should maybe go there ones), and some space where small neighborhood markets and events turn up with some regularity. The other main soft pink and yellow blob in a convenient central location on the map is two elementary schools*******. In many more organically grown neighborhoods or places the amenities wouldn’t be so conveniently centralized or would eventually be “centralized” on the outskirt of town.
The Bijlmer comparison, what not to do
Another interesting point of comparison I think is the Bijlmer (Bijlmermeer officially) in Amsterdam, another green neighborhood designed as one big plan outside of its parent city’s core, yet quite different. The Bijlmer is nationally famous as a bit of a ghetto, a place where you don’t want to live. (To be fair: the plane falling down on it didn’t help its case.) A lot of work has been done to improve the place, but its initial “ghettoization” was surprising because the Bijlmer was never intended to even be particularly affordable, but more of a vertical suburb, spacious family apartments (around 120 m2) for 100,000 people or more in large highrise buildings with between them plenty of green. A quiet place, with quick access to the city, using density to save on land use and travel time. There are three main differences I see between the struggling Bijlmer and “doing pretty well” Lunetten: 1 The Bijlmer has a higher density through the use of massive apartment buildings, literally and figuratively increasing the distance between people’s homes and the public space. 2 The Bijlmer is a much bigger place, I’m not sure they ever got to those 100,000 inhabitants, but it certainly loses that towny vibe. 3 They’ve been correcting this in the rebabilitation, but as designed the Bijlmer had basically no amenities. It wasn’t a town or city, it was people storage, housing for people who mentally lived several kilometers away but couldn’t afford it there. See the rest of this subreddit for why that doesn’t work for many people.
Interdependency with other suburbs
Looking back on growing up in that smallish town I notice that there really isn’t that much of a difference in amenities. The town offered much of the same things Lunetten does. But Lunetten’s status as a suburb gives it a big advantage over that town. Because while suburbs mostly serve themselves, they also serve each other. Take sports: there’s a football and tennis club and two indoor sports halls in Lunetten, but what if I want to swim or throw spears instead? Well, there’s a pool in a suburb to the North, as well as an athletics stadium. After elementary school there’s no middle/high school in Lunetten, but there are in nearby neighborhoods, and there are even college options******** spread throughout different suburbs and neighborhoods. These things are closer than they are in a small town not because the suburb is associated with a city center, but because it is associated with other suburbs. There are things I liked about the commuter town, but having to take either an honestly too long bike trip or a bus ride that only went whenever it was not convenient for me whenever I wanted to do something my town didn’t provide, like going to school, wasn’t one of them. And I say that even as a spoiled person whose commuter town at least had buses and bicycle paths.
Conclusion
And that is I think the main takeaway from this absolute wall of text: suburbs don’t have to be places where there’s nothing to do and you feel disconnected from the world. That’s the entire point of living in a suburb instead of in a town: there are other places nearby. There is a balance to be found between private space, public space and connectivity. Essentially, in a neighborhood of 10,000 people, for every 100x100 meters of public space or amenities either every person gets 1 square meter less private space or everybody gets maybe a few meters of extra travel distance on the average trip. Lunetten probably provides too little private space for the taste of many North American suburbanites, but it does show I think that there is quite a bit of room on those sliders. A green place with amenities sort of near other places can still be built with more spacious houses. (Just maybe go easy on the sea of lawns?) And that’s when all the separated bike lanes and other urbanist talking points really start making sense: when you found the balance between having your own place, having local places worth going to and being close enough to other places worth going to, then you want a good way to get there.
The other takeaway I feel is that it pays to design neighborhoods as a unit. And that’s another reason why suburbs can be better than towns. A town of 10,000 residents can’t plan ahead for the next 10,000, but a city of several hundred thousand people can. And it pays off. Don’t lose track of the human scale though, planning 10,000 residents ahead might actually be better than planning 100,000 or 1,000,000 residents ahead when it comes to suburbs. It is still supposed to feel like a quiet little place with maybe a bit of its own identity.
* On the other side of one of the highways there’s a bit of forest tied to several historic estates that’s very nice for walking in as well as a golf course half as big as this entire neighborhood, this really is the edge of town and will be for the foreseeable future.
** I’ve also lived in several other cities since then, near the city center, further out and on the far edge in a highrise neighborhood. Honestly I might still prefer the smaller cities I’ve lived in, being near everything the city offers and even to some of the stuff outside of it. But work took me back to a larger city (pretend I said “less tiny” if you’re from Mexico City or something), and I could honestly have landed in a much worse place than this particular suburb.
*** Fun fact: this is one of the very few neighborhoods of Utrecht where parking is currently still free, because of enough parking space and enough distance to the city center. It really is a suburb.
**** In the 90’s a style of more expensive neighborhoods called “Vinex” set standards for the ratio of more expensive to cheaper houses in those neighborhoods, and ever since both contractors and local politicians refuse to let go of those ratios everywhere. A newer, competing vision is that we shouldn’t be building new neighborhoods at all, just filling in the gaps in our cities. So now we mostly build quite large houses, but only in very small spaces. We’re still not sure where that massive housing shortage came from, somehow.
***** I stopped and addressed him because I thought he was having bicycle trouble, chain ran off or something. Quite a chill dude, very apologetic, but still maybe not exactly what the average parent is looking for in a neighbor.
****** More accurately: Holland Waterline, because it wasn’t the only Dutch waterline, but it was the main one defending the part called Holland. But that sounds a bit off in English.
******* We have a bit of a weird school system, for every public elementary school there is at least one other founded on religious grounds or based on some specific didactic theory. That’s why there are two schools in the same central location instead of just one bigger school or two in separate locations.
******** If I start going into the differences in advanced education systems we’ll be here all day, but there are options within cycling distance ranging from trade school to university, depending on the field you actually want to study *********.
********* I could start using other symbols instead of these confusingly long rows of asterisks, but where would be the fun in that?

2024.05.15 07:30 rand0mnibba Cancun or PDC or Tulum for a solo traveller

Hi, I will be landing in Cancun for the first time on 20th June and will be in and around for a week there. I am not that keen on partying and much more of an active traveller (exploring mayan ruins, going for a swim to cenotes, museums etc.). I plan on doing this leg of mexico on a budget (will prefer staying at hostels with a good wifi connectivity). This is my current itenerary: land in Cancun -> take a bus to PDC (3 days) -> take a bus to valladolid ( 2 days) -> take a bus to cancun (2 days). Fly back home on 28th. Is this doable? Should I directly go to Tulum instead of PDC? I wouldn't want to skip Valladolid as I really want to see chichen itza.I will mostly be dependent on the ADO buses and/or if/any public transport since I am solo. This itinerary is WIP, so please feel free to recommend doing +-1 day here and there.
Will really appreciate any inputs here. Gracias!

2024.05.15 05:57 TrentonConnector My Friend Said Something Pretty Racist and I haven't Spoken to Her In 2 Weeks

CONVERSATION WITH MY FRIEND LINKED IN COMMENTS
So I was travelling in Peru, an absolute dream trip. After 4 days of hiking the incredible Inca Trail, I got back to my hostel that evening bursting with excitement to tell all my friends back home about it. I got on Discord and talked to a friend I've had for 10 years (screencaps of convo in comments). She mentioned she's going to Florida with her husband in June. Anyway I happened to mention some other potential places she might like and mentioned Mexico among them. Cue the conversation.
.
I think she interpreted what I was saying as downplaying the fact that, yes, travelling as a woman is very different than travelling as a man, especially if it's a more traditional place. Maybe I should have made it clear that I understand that instead of trying to offer examples of women who feel safe travelling. But I got immediately defensive because she couched it in a racial way, implying it's inherently unsafe to be outnumbered by people of colour as a white woman (she even conflated Mexico and Dominican Republic because they're both Latin countries) which really shook me up because I haven't heard her talk like this before. Sometimes when we have a contentious disagreement she shuts the conversation down, like you see at the end there, and since then (May 1) I haven't messaged her. I just don't know what to say.
.
I had such an amazing time in Peru and met so many nice people. So to hear my good friend disparaging the people of Latin American countries in such a callous way really cut me deep, especially when I think of my own Latin friends. I'm torn between feeling mad at her for thinking this way, and feeling bad for her being so scared of the world that she thinks she'll be abducted and murdered if she wanders too far from home. The world is a beautiful place with a lot of bad in it, but most people are good. It's a shame to learn she doesn't feel the same way.
.
What would you do in this situation? Should I attempt to talk this out with her? Simply state that I'm offended and why? Should I wait for her to reach out again? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
.
I know it's probably neither here nor there but she grew up in an extremely sheltered family--I'm talking not being allowed to take buses by herself until she was in her mid 20s, religious abuse, not knowing about the world until after she met me, still living with her husband and weird hoarder parents in their basement at 30, etc. So sometimes she says VERY out of touch stuff but usually means well. These racial comments are new though. It makes me wonder how well I really know my friend, if I've been blind to other instances in the past, or what. Sorry for the ramble but it's been eating at me and I had no one to really talk about this with!

2024.05.14 21:24 Technical-Pie-5775 Trip Report: 10 nights from the UK (very long)

For context: we have two kids age 8 and 5.
Just back from 10 nights at POFQ, our first ever Disney trip. Overall really liked the hotel, it's a shame they had a pipe burst in their swimming pool and it was being repaired for most of our stay, but it was still a really nice place. Swimming pool at Riverside was only a 10 min walk away.
I had a good outline of our itinerary for the whole stay written up before we left with plenty of ADRs , however what we actually did was quite different.
Wrote up as much as I could remember, the exact order of events in particular is a bit muddy but I did my best.
Day 1: Arrive in the early evening, went to the pool, had inner in the food hall, went to bed.
Day 2: Genie + at Magic Kingdom. Totally screwed up EE that day because the park opened at 8am that day which caught me off guard, but aside from not rope-dropping Seven Dwarves as planned, we still got SO much done that day.
Arrived at 8am park opening.
Jungle Cruise
Big Thunder Mountain x 2
Pirates of the Carribbean
Ariel
Barnstormer x 2
Dumbo
Genie + Peter Pan
Laugh Floor
Genie + Buzz Lightyear
Peoplemover
Cosmic Rays for lunch, chosen for it's close proximity and indoor tables. Fine but extremely boring.
Genie + Space Mountain/Speedway (in two parts since my youngest didn't go on it, I took both my kids to speedway while my husband had his turn)
Big Thunder again
Small World (but son needed toilet in queue so we left and husband and daughter stayed)
Then we went back into Smallworld while daughter and husband did Barnstormer again.
Genie + Winnie the Pooh.
Dinner at Skipper Canteen - so good!
We also watched the parade that day but it was sooo hot, we opted for a poorer view from a main street shop in the shade. Was not worth sticking out the heat for the length of time you would need to get an optimal view. I think trying to go our very first day was a mistake because we weren't acclimatised at all yet.
The longest queue we had that day was probably for Smallworld. Everything moved really quickly! Was also happy with Genie+.
Day 2: Animal Kingdom
Had entry issues and needed cards re-assigned at entry so kinda messed up FOP EE rope drop but husband and daughter persevered anyway. Son and I did Na'vi River and explored Pandora and stared Wilderness Explorers. Spent a LOT of time in Pandora gift shop.
Gorilla Trek
Wildlife Express and Rafiki's Planet Watch.
Festival of the Lion King (so good!)
It's Tough to be a Bug
Triceratops Spin
Had really nice homey feeling cookie and gigantic ice cream in Dinoland
Dinosaur (3 of us loved this ride, my son thought it was a bit too scary also it seemed like they should increase the height requirement because he could barely reach the bar to brace himself. I know it's being discontinued though.)
Safari
Dinner at hotel.
Day 3: Hollywood Studios
Successful EE rope drop for Rise of the Resistance
Smuggler's Run
Met Donald Duck
Met Goofy and Max
Star Tours
Runaway Railway (queue was brutal in the sun but it was a great ride)
Indiana Jones Show
Star Tours again
Muppets 3d
Race Academy - did not know what to expect coming in. If we had known we would not have trekked all the way across the park in the heat for that. My son DID like it, but it really didn't feel like it was the same quality as any of the other shows or rides.
Went back to Galaxy's edge for Blue and Green milk + puffbread. All really good. We possibly did Star Tour again, I don't remember haha.
The wait times for everything else being very long + the heat had us going back to the hotel early.
Dinner at hotel.
Day 4: Magic Kingdom Day 2
Tried to EE rope drop 7 dwarves but it was down and we decided not to wait it out (rookie mistake)
Teacups
Thunder Mountain x 2
Split up and did Haunted Mansion/ Smallworld (and got stuck on Smallworld for like 15 minutes)
Haunted mansion crew did Carousel while waiting for us, then we did Carousel after.
Took Daughter to meet Pooh and Tigger while the others did Speedway + People Mover .
Pinocchio Haus for lunch somewhere in there, really good flatbread!
Back to hotel early for dinner.
Day 5: Genie + Epcot.
Failed to get Guardians Boarding at 7am.
EE Test Track
Mission Space (Green)
Genie + Remy
Genie + Soarin
Moana water walkthrough
Genie + Living with the Land
Got boarding for guardians for about 6pm. Cancelled ADR because of it.
Spaceship Earth
Met Moana
Genie + Nemo
Genie + Figment
Met Figment
Met Joy
Nemo again
Turtle talk with Crush
Quick Dinner in Mexico
Gran Fiesta Tour (honestly had no idea this was here, really cool building, kids liked the boat ride)
Finally boarding group for guardians called at nearly 7pm.
Really great day! I seemed to be able to book really quickly back to back for Genie +. Kids really liked all the chill dark rides .
Wanted to do Frozen that day but the Genie+ was sold out even before lunch.
At this point we are really just trying to get things we missed
Day 6: Magic Kingdom Day 3
Successful EE rope drop of Seven Dwarves. Said 75 min wait when we entered but it really wasn't too bad, maybe 30-45. This ride had amazing theming, but was lacking as a coaster.
Teacups
Split up and 2 of us did astral orbiter that had a wait time of 25 minutes, and the other 2 did space mountain with a wait time of 35 minutes. Space mountain finished first!
Carousel
Pilharmagic
Swiss Family Treehouse
Enchanted Tiki Room
Magic Carpet - this seemed to be my son's favourite of this style ride. He's been talking about magic carpets evey day since.
We actually had a boarding time for Tron but the kids got fed up of the heat so we gave up and cancelled or place in the virtual queue.
Took the train back to the entrance. Very pleasant.
Dinner at hotel
Day 7
Epcot Day 2
We really wanted to do Cosmic Rewind again and do Frozen since we missed it the other day.
We failed to get a 7am boarding so bought an ILL for 11:30
EE rope drop at Frozen, which was down and they tried to get us to go elsewhere but it was open by about 8:45.
Gran Fiesta Tour
Met Asha
We were going to go do Soarin but we got distracted by a giant Joffrey's donut and a squirrel that was fun to watch, and then there was a minor child meltdown so we had a long break before heading to our ILL for Cosmic Rewind. Totally worth the cost.
I tried one last time to see if the kids would explore the World Showcase but they voted to go to the waterpark instead.
We went back to the hotel, then off to Typhoon Lagoon where 3/4 of us got minor scrapes in the wave pool, but kids loved it and would have gone back a second day.
Went back to Disney Springs and got dinner at Chicken Guy. Probably the best fast food I have ever had.
Day 8
Animal Kingdom Day 2
This was a lot of running around chasing short queues. Genie + would have been really good for us at this park.
EE rope drop Everest x 2. Was really good but going backwards made my stomach a bit iffy.
Na'vi River
Safari (finally saw an elephant!)
Nemo Show
Lion King Show again
Met Dug (first character my son was actually excited to meet)
Maharajah Jungle Trek
Back to Disney Springs for Dinner. Went to Pizza Ponte so we could all choose a different topping of pizza. Also walked around and heard live music before we left.
Took daughter to Happily Ever After fireworks that night. Stood above the railway station for a quick escape at the end.
Day 9
Last day :(
Genie + Hollywood Studios
Genie + didn't seem to work as well at this park, it seemed at Epcot I could always book after entering a ride and we used it a lot but at HS it seemed strictly 2 hours apart. Maybe I am just not seeing it clearly.
On reflection , next time I would probably do Slinky Dog at EE followed by Runaway Railway and buy an ILL for Rise and skip Genie + if I was looking to save some money. I would de-prioritise Toy Story Mania next time, but our first day we missed all of the Toy Story area.
EE rope drop Rise of the Resistance. Pretty sure we were on the ride before EE even officially started.
Smuggler's Run
Met The Mandalorian and Grogu (probably the best meet!)
Star Tours
Alien Flying Saucers
Droid Depot
Genie + Slinky dog
Beauty and the Beast show
Met Chewbacca
Met Pluto
Genie + Runaway Railway
Star Tours again
Genie + Toy Story Mania. Ride broke down while in queue. Waited for ages before the put us on the other side, almost missed our next booking.
Oga's Canteen. Tried 4 different non-alcoholic drinks and they were all good. It was super cool. Only downside is we had a high table (standing only) and my son couldn't see the top of the table/anything and he was pretty unimpressed by the whole situation. Flying Saucers Mama Melrose for dinner. Muppets 3d Fantasmic. I read 15 min early "at least" aimed for 30 minutes early, and the place was well more than half full by then. Took a really long time to leave. If there is a next time I would go much earlier and bring snacks just to make getting out easier. Overall I was hugely impressed with the level of detail in everything, and all the cast members were amazing. It was a really cool experience, and it's hard to imagine never going back. If there is a next time I really want to explore the world showcase and do more sit-down meals. We had a lot planned but the kids didn't have the stamina for being in the park all day so we cancelled almost all of them. We also ended up doing parks in a somewhat different order than I initially planned. Kids got really tired of travelling on buses, which is also why we didn't break in the middle of the day and then going back to the parks. Would look at skyliner options next time. Things we didn't get to do:
Try dole whip (never noticed a place to buy it, ice cream was often an urgent necessity so didn't seek it out specifically) Tron (too hot to wait for boarding group when it was already day 3 at magic Kingdom and basically felt done.) Explore World Showcase (too much walking for few rides, from kids' perspective) Eat for fun more (we ate more out of necessity but found fun snacks when convenient) Tower of Terror (queues too long and genie + bookings too late) Frozen Singalong (timing never seemed to work out) Luminous (son had no interest in late night shows so we only did a couple things at night.) Take ride on skyliner. Something that surprised me: queues for popular rides stayed long even at 9pm. Couldn't see a viable alternative to EE rope drop + genie plus to get all the big rides "done" except perhaps if you had extended evening hours, but that would not have worked with our kids. Number of beignets consumed during our stay: 12

2024.05.12 21:40 Hopeful_Cry2285 Public Transit in a Cost-Saving World

Attempting to remediate the tangible and intangible benefits of public transport, cost-benefit analyses have become a common tool for development policy. Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Ecologia (2008) performed a cost benefit analysis of bus rapid transport implementation in Mexico City, placing a large focus on environmental sustainability and bridging the gap between qualitative and quantitative economic benefits, wimilar reports having been produced for Guadalajara (Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes, 2020). Mexican policy has an institutional framework that incentivizes transport policy with positive social externalities, setting a precedent for future courses of action (Ramirez Soberanis, 2010). Other applications of this methodology in Mexico have been for the Tren Maya aiming to connect major cities and tourist areas with a 1525-kilometer track, at an estimated cost of $7.5 billion. The socio-economic profitability is evident, to say nothing of the economic externalities, but its financial viability is questioned (Rocha Chiu and Jimenez Arguelles, 2021). Developing nations at large, perhaps as a consequence of less capital for infrastructure, have adopted cost-benefit analyses as a means of justifying further investment. When analyzing the economic impact of Lahore’s Orange Line Metro, Ali et al (2020) found an over 2:1 ratio between expected benefits and initial costs. Another study of Pakistani public transport outlinines the cost and benefits of various energy sources for buses, indicating renewable sources had a higher return investment than nonrenewable sources, synergizing developmental and environmental benefits (Siddiqui et al., 2024). Examining the economic viability of bus rapid transit (BRT) in Can Tho, Vietnam with a focus on its cost-effectiveness and efficiency in high-density urban centers; Khong, Tong and Bui (2023) calculate the benefits of BRT and estimates motorists' willingness to pay for the shift. Their report indicates local willingness to adopt public transport even without economic returns, due to the sheer benefits of reduced accident risk and pollution emissions. Important to note are how many studies of this kind delve into human-centric perspectives related to infrastructure construction as much as economic benefits are explored. Deyas and Woldeamanuel (2020) reflect this sentiment in their exploration of Ethiopia's first modern urban rail transit system and its socio-economic effects on communities. Their study found positive impacts such as reduced transport costs and increased travel distance, but also negatives like intra-neighborhood segregation and long walking distances. The study suggests that addressing these issues, such as building the line on existing streets or underground, could help reduce segregation and improve overall community satisfaction.

2024.05.12 10:06 RalphGet-Em91 My guide to collapse (Short term pessimism, long term optimism)

Hi! my name is Raf (male 32), English is not my first language, but I'll try my best to do a little summary in the way I am getting thru day after day in this batshit crazy planet that's spinning all of us at unfathomable speeds haha.
Anyway a bit of context, I am a psychologist (still haven't finished my degree but I'm getting there) did also a degree in Mechatronic Engineering, and for a while I have been wondering how I'd like to spend the precious and little time we all have left, I live in Mexico City and we are running out of water as we speak, we also have been having power cuts due to the extreme heat, and our farmers are really struggling to get the crops going for next year apparently, long story short, the short to immidiate term seems pretty gloomy. However I've been trying to come up with steps or things to help me stay clear-minded and be less anxiuos about what's to come and would like to share some of the ideas I have.
First: Physical fitness Regardless of your region, the expose to collapse you have, the probability of it, or whatever is out there to get you in terms of climate emergency, you will need to be in the best shape you can, either moving, migrating, fighting, escaping, digging, or just your regular 9-5 and commuting to your job(s) or school you will need physicall fitness. The more you have the better, you can use youtube, there are so many creators that use bodyweight or little to no equipment, if you have a park use it (walking is an amazing excercise), if you have just a room I am sure you can come up with something to do at least a few minutes a day, resistance bands are great to! is important for generating a sense of well-being, purpose and you'll see the difference in the little things, like squatting to get a pencil you dropped or getting out of your chair at the end of your shift, less achy after driving, and just overall feel more capable (the mental aspect of challenging yourself everyday to train or get a workout done can't be overstated) set immidiate, short and long term goals. Whatever life has to throw at you, you'll need to be able to get there(or get out of the way haha), and ensuring you have the best fitness you can is a great way of making any task easier or at the very least bearable.
1.5: Dental health Can't ever be overstated how important your dental health is, is crippling (both financially and physically) to have a tooth ache, I guess we all have been there one way or another, but it has been proven thru centuries that having a good dental hygene can be a desiscive factor in a matter of shit hitting the fan, as dental health is linked to heart issues, mental issues (self image, or just people going crazy with the pain) floss and brush your teeth as much as possible, again there are tutorial about how to correctly brush your teeth, the more you can delay losing them the better, and the better shape you have them, the easier things will be in the long run.
Second: Enjoy the little things. I live in the city, admittedly there is a lot of public transport so walking and getting where I need to go is not always super hard, but that doesn't mean is always pleasant, the heat guys is crazy, the metro is hot and humid, crowded, buses are the same, and is toil to get wherever you need, to get on time and in a presentable manner. However I've realized that while I'm in the public transport or in the car, there's always time to crank a podcast of whatever I am interested in, I am in constant lookout for things to learn and fascinate myself, either with history, a nicely written story(of whatever is your preference), the universe and it's mechanics... you name it, there's always something for you and hopefully you can use those elements to distract yourself while commuting. And then and there, when is hot, humid, crowded and people are in a bad mood (admitedly sometimes so am I) knowing that I can read a book, listen to a story, nice music or whatever I am into at that moment, makes me realize that things can always get worse, but it doesn't mean that I have to suffer, and being able to connect somewhere else and take my mind there is an amazing gift we all can do, I try the most to enjoy the little things, things like that.
Third: Learn, learn and learn
So, cool, I got to school or work, gotta do the job regardless, yeah is alienating, and a little trash for sure, but I do it knowing that I have to get something out of it (turns out sometimes the lesson is that you get nothing out of it anyway) but when I get home I try to learn a skill or practice a skill I am interested into, play guitar, sing, learn how to sow, do math (lately I've put myself the challenge of learn and dominate algebra so I can do calculus, I barely passed those classes and super sucked), learn about the way people and societies in the past figured out things that might come in handy for me in the present or the future (i.e. cool myself with no electricity, recipes to cook ingredients I am not used too and learn to put together meals out of all the ingredients I have in hand...yadda, yadda you know the drill) so I try to always to learn as much as possible of as much as possible (sometimes just to do something out of the ordinary) also, rest from learning, learn how to do nothing and be ok with it, boredom is a rare commodity nowadays, enless scrolling, bombarment of bad news, things that the algorithm knows you'll react to and make you angry, sad, or feel big emotions is also a way to paralize you, try to disengage from time to time, 5 minutes, then 10 ,then and hour...until you can do something else with the precious time you have left.
Fourth: This too shall pass I live in Mexico and you don't need me to tell you about the dire state of affairs regarding safety and security, the cold truth is that the world ends every day for someone, thousands of people get killed everywhere in the world, they die in wars, crashes, job accidents, medical emergencies, anything really. In Mexico we say that when you are born, death hides somewhere, sometimes is in your liver, sometimes is hiding in a car that will impact you, sometimes is in a bullet that was manufactured thousands of kilometers way from you, a tree and it's rotten roots that eventually will fall on you..you know, death is hiding anywhere and you never know when you are going to met her, so we developed a mentality of resilience towards death in wich we know we are going to die, it has to make everything beautiful for you, and it's a stoic way of understanding your life will end at some point (to quote the movie "fight club": On a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero) . You have a shitty day? this too shall pass. You are having an amazing day? This too shall pass. Your life is miserable and has more lows than ups? This too shall pass, cause in the end we too shall pass.
Fifth: Be generous When I mean be generous is be generous with everything around you but primarily to you. Be generous with the things you like to do and do them for you, be generous to others, sometimes you will be able to give money, sometimes you will be able to give food, sometimes only a shoulder to cry on or comfort, other times you will be able to just look at someone and their suffering and just witness it, that's also being generous. I like to apply what we call "minimum effort law" do the bare minimum for others when such others are using you to offset their labour, the bare minimum for your job, the teacher that dislikes you...but do the maximum effort when being generous, to you, your friends, your family, your community. No one else will have your back, (and sometimes not even them) so that's why you have to be generous to you first, and apply the law of maximum effort for you, also being generous is great for mental health and aspects of your mental hygene, sometimes getting a smile in return for a service lended, any help you can give to someone that doesn't compromise your well-being is a good way to make you feel good too. In Mexico we have a saying that goes "Has el bien, sin mirar a quién" or escencially transtaled to "Do good without looking to whom" in the sense of do good just because you have integrity and the world is full of assholes, the hard part is not being one of them too (at least not very often) so I have found that being generous is a nice way to get me thru my day when I know things are annoying or down right fucked.
Sixth: Meditate and practice grattitude.
When things are tense in any aspect of your life, take a moment to express grattitude about the things you have, but also about the things you don't and the situations your are NOT in, for example, I am grateful I live in a free country, but I am also grateful I don't live in a place that has nothing for me, or a place at war (I mean real unhindered war) or with famine. I practice grattitude every time I scroll thru this app and see the poor devils in impossible situations, like war, migration, famine, violence, instability both economical and political and knowing that I am not there yet is what I am grateful every day and every hour, cause goddamn! sometimes the only thing that separates you from a comfortable living or in the very least not a survival mode is geography and sheer luck, so appreciate you are lucky, cause as I said earlier, never forget there is nothing bad that can't get worse, that being said also the act of taking 15 minutes a day to meditate can be a balancing act that keeps you from throwing everything down the toilet, there are great resources on youtube that can take you thru a guided meditation, stitting still and trying to slow down your mind, listen to your breathing, and making an attempt to clear your mind of thought is an amazing way to decompress and reflect on your well-being.
seventh: Library, use it. "To read a good novel is to live a second life", libraries are the apex of civilization. I am fascinated when I think that humanity didn't have the concept of libraries that were free, open to the public and where you are not expected to spend money and is a trust system based on the fact that you'll return the item that was lended to you, an honor system that speaks loud about how far we've come as a society, so use it! Use the library to rest on a day off, read books or listen to music or sometimes is a good way of feelling accompanied either by the books or the people using it, a place of solemn vivbes where you have to be in silence, but where you can read what you like, the amount of time you want. (obviously within reasonable hours, the poor librarians have to rest too!) I studied abroad in Europe and making friends was a tad bit hard, but being able to spend entire days reading novels, non-fiction books, or whatever I wanted that day is a gift I will cherish all my life. Libraries rock and the fact that you could have one makes you a very lucky person in this planet. If you don't have access to one, try to download the books in your kindle, tablet or phone, nowadays we can have entire collections at our disposal, remeber that being able to read and write, consult a book, and have place to read is an enourmos freedom you have, excersise it!
Eight: Become efficient handling your resourses.
Resources such as water, food, electricity, light (candles or the like) and mostly time are precious, so try to make your expenditure in those the most efficient possible, I know many of you are doing it already but is not idiotic to try and remember to consciusly use and maximize all of them, reduce, reuse, recicle, upcicle, learn how to mantain them because life is maintenance, your stuff, but also your relationships, your mental health, your physicall help, your teeth and everything you come across. I feel the best way to taking care of oneself is to mantain in good condition everything you find useful, wether that be an umbrella, a pair of shoes or boots, a friend, family...maintenance is key.
Thank you very much this is all I could muster in the short time I was thinking of it and trying to put into words, anything else you might want to add is very much welcome. Good luck and godspeed my collapsniks.

2024.05.04 03:49 taiyuan41 Napalm

As Napalm
It felt frustrating in Chongqing. I was rather stuck in Hechuan. I got accustomed to lajiao (spice) there. I was a Midwesterner at the age of 22. I was raised in Illinois. I became a manic—a Ferris wheel on fire—I was hiding under a bed in a hotel. Bold like napalm. Sometimes I can never stop. Even when I was 18 in a ward arguing with staff. Always want to fight things. That’s why I refused the meds and went on a plane from America to China. I was going to be an English teacher. And like a light switch, the change and SSRIs turned me into a mess. It would be my first time experiencing psychosis. My biggest issue. I never imagined I would be stuck illegally in a country suffering a psychotic episode in my early twenties.
Transplanted as pollen. I was left with a backpack and a cellphone. With a downloaded app called WeChat. I had arrogantly quit a university job in a fit. Spent the past months full of energy and not sleeping and neglecting myself, including not eating, to work on a novel. Not considering myself normally religious, I had obsessed over occult ideas during that time. Spending nights reading Aleister Crowley—haven taken a rusty pocket knife to carve a pentagram on my chest for spiritual protection.
I did not have funds to fly home. My visa was connected to my previous job, which meant I had now made it void. I was an illegal resident now in China.
I used a nifty app called WeChat as a messaging app, it allows users to find people near them that are also looking for others. It was like a virtual pond. All kinds of people, including sex workers trying to make things happen.
It could with luck be used to find people looking for people in terms of other kinds of work. It was helpful on many occasions for finding gigs working at English training schools and also finding work as a private tutor for people.
WeChat also works as a digital wallet.
Mania makes me irritable. Enough to tell a boss to fuck off. Thoughts ricochet within me. Bumper cars collide.
Being stuck and angry sucks. I scrolled and scrolled on a Huawei phone.
Absolutely pissed off at this world.
Pissed at the times police wanted to take me away for being a mess.
Sometimes women get pissed. Scrolling through their phones. Angry at their cheating husbands. It really is not that hard to have flair—be a damn white oddity. Like moths to a porchlight. Particles of sand through hands. This is when I first started the habit of it…
I rather go by a rather empty name of Taishen… with further explanation needed but now is not convenient. But I assure it is interesting enough and has some importance.
Habits are various in nature in how they attach to and eat at marrow—like atom bombs flashing as rays evaporating DNA—sets in a way less than human as putting myself in the cage of bad things taken up—my time as a former heroin addict is left as stretch marks on me in various ways. The same goes for the first time I found myself making arrangements with middle aged married women while desperation of waves whiplashed me like sandpaper hands coming at me to leave me in a tiring state of abrasion.
I had spent a night snuck away into a hotel. Found someone on a business trip. Instead of registering I waited to sneak along into the hotel elevator amongst a group of others attending the hotel, as I had no card. I headed to a designated room number. Originally I was sitting in a park. Playing on WeChat and found someone in their mid-thirties. Pictures were exchanged and I said no. She brought up paying for the hotel if I arrived. I agreed and went along.
When I met I washed up after her and we used our phones to awkwardly translate what we would do.
Room service knocked. I found myself hidden under a bed as I was not registered to be there.
It seems unusual that it was around this time I had started working on a story of my life as a heroin addict when I got caught up in my worse manic episode ever experienced during my age of 22. Finished half that story before never going back to it after my manic episode had ended. Now I am here writing about it and wondering if the same can happen again in the process of this work.
It feels extremely cliché I would write a novel about struggles with heroin addiction. It has been done many times. It’s just lame of me.
I feel like my thoughts are bit off. I left the hotel the next morning with the little money I did have on a debit card. Turns out the woman was from Taiyuan. It is a city in the northern part of China in the province of Shanxi—coal country with the worst air pollution in China. She has a colleague in Taiyuan that takes courses at an English training center. I was able to contact this place in the morning via a shared contact on WeChat given to me by the stranger I met that night.
Before I knew it I was sending my information and documents in my backpack at an internet café in a fax—with the intent that the woman agreed to share my information to the training center as she shared my contact to its hiring manager. It would land me a job that day that would help me out of my situation. Things turned not quite out as I expected though. I was shifted like a ball to somebody else to contact for a training center geared to teaching children.
I took what I had and ran off to a train station after taking the public transit. Unfortunately I was shit for money and could not afford a high speed rail pass. The slow train would take thirty-two hours to get to my destination. I would have taken a room with a bed but all I could afford was a hard seat for the travel.
Things were getting better for me in the circumstance considering I had found someone willing to take me for work despite my visa situation.
The thirty-two hour train ride was horrendous in some ways, but mostly I was in excitement despite the circumstances. I’m always giddy when disappointed. I moved up and down the aisle of the train. I could not speak mandarin, but it did not stop me from trying to interact with everyone. I talked many ears off during the train ride. I went up and down the aisle trying to interact as a moth to porchlights—I could not stop even if I had wanted to. I found great enjoyment the times I did get to sit across a table from somebody my age heading to Taiyuan from Chongqing. They were a university student returning to their hometown. Another passenger who sat beside me was an elderly man with hard boiled eggs, he was eating one after another one. I highly enjoyed each and every conversation that I had. It was like my head was a lightbulb wanting June bugs to bang against it with the intensity of Roman candles shot at my mouth of nicotine tinged teeth.
“If you find someone in Shanxi it is practice to pay the family money before you can get married. You would also have to already own a home and a car,” told my new friend across in their seat from me—a university passenger friend named David.
“Not necessarily what I was looking for. When is the next stop for snacks?” When the train stops I am able to get out and to have a walk onto the platform to buy various goods from the vendors to take back with me to eat along the ride to Taiyuan.
I had all my important documents tucked in my bag. This included my health clearance and obviously I made no mention of my mental health diagnosis or history to the doctor who had to evaluate me. My diploma and TEFL certificate were tucked away securely. A TEFL is a certificate that stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language, it qualifies me to teach English as a second language abroad—it had only took a few months of taking a course online that I had paid for to obtain.
It is easy to be happy when you can trick yourself as your own con artist. Mania can make you deceive yourself. One can be doused in napalm and still not fully recognize what is actually going on. Same goes the flicking of psychosis. Even when I have nothing I find myself in my radiating irritation the most qualified of things—the velocity of my rhythm sets me out of an orbit.
The pressure cooker keeps me moving like a propeller at times. I finally arrived at Taiyuan. I arrived at the station to be greeted by Ryan my manager and his assistant Jennifer. We had our hello and introduction and they helped me get to a taxi that would bring me to my new apartment. I finally had a residence again. Apparently they were desperate for a teacher. The last teacher was from New Mexico and apparently they pulled a midnight run—that is when a teacher in the middle of the night disappears onto a plane back home without any notification of it.
The apartment was okay. On the fourth floor with no elevator, so it was a bit of a climb up a dark stairwell not lit correctly.
My job was a training center that had a location near Yingze Park in the center of the city. I was to be paid in cash via envelopes. I would assist in teaching kindergarten all the way up to high school aged students there in private lessons paid by their parents. I would also be assigned by my company to various primary schools in the city. I would take public buses to various schools paid by the company I worked for to give English lessons as I bounced around to various classrooms and schools in the city. Often I would receive a phone call to avoid going to work that day if my boss got inside input that officials would be doing raids to check foreigners’ visas that day.
A taxi ride would always be a thrill. Caused me nerves at first, but I came to love the flying in dangerous ways along a busy road. I remember a driver beeping their horn away as they drove onto the sidewalk to pass people. They treated the pedestrians as if they were in the wrong. I came flying in front of a primary school at its front gates. I was going to start teaching a first grade classroom and a kindergarten classroom. The way schools are set up is with a wall around the entirety of the exterior of the school. There is a gate at the front where one or two security will be waiting to let people in and out of the complex of the school.
I walked in front of the gate to greet the security. It was my first time with an assignment at this school. The guard said they had never seen me before and wouldn’t let me in. Not a big nuisance while I called my boss who then called the school to sort out the situation.
I miss the classroom so much. I ended up teaching in China for five years at various training schools. After returning to Illinois, I still taught as a primary school teacher in a public school.
I often feel extremely ugly from inside to my outside, but something is attractive there. This does not come just in terms of flirting and relationships—mania makes me a genuine lightbulb that flickers in a way that encourages the insects to me—everyone looks like a June bug—this is what I have come to understand about life. But that ugly does kind of stay like rot in a cavity that leaves a bad taste in the mouth that smells foul—hoping nobody catches the smell near me—it must tie into my struggles with bulimia over the years.
The same goes for my years as a teacher—in relation to the whole lightbulb phenomenon—I’m positive it is tied to mania and hypomania. The younger students always were fixated on the information I was teaching to them. I kept over the years methods taught to me and self-taught that I found extremely effective with younger students when it comes to teaching.
Everything was physical in learning in terms of intensity and ambition. When teaching my first grade classroom I would create flashcards for the vocab we would work on and implement in creating new sentences with. We would chant these words together in a way that made me a clown while teaching. Students would yell out the word that I presented with intense enthusiasm. As I walked by students it was expected that while they yelled out the word they would also physically hit the card. Later I would also work on physical gestures and acting out of vocab words and they would follow the actions and phrases with me.
I would often eventually turn the class into two teams. When students got an answer right I would behave comically and full of energy—I would give them a high five and pretend they were so strong with it that it hurt my hand in the process with much exaggeration—the students always seemed to never get tired of this act.
One game I would play involved drawing two stick figures with happy faces on them. Each figure would represent one of the teams for the classroom. I would draw a hungry alligator under the figures. Their faces would also be comical in appearance and full of exaggerations. Each figure had a parachute placed over them and four strings attached. During the game the students would race to say the word correctly represented on the flashcard or the correct word for the gesture I was making. The team that was not the slowest would lose a string on the parachute. If a team lost all four strings they would fall to the alligator who would eat them. The students found it hilarious with my actions involved in it. I would also draw tears and a person praying to represent anticipation and worry of falling down each time they lost a string.
I had a tooth game too. I would draw too large faces for each team. The team that could answer the flashcards and gestures the quickest would have a tooth drawn in their mouth. The team with the most teeth would win and it would look rather funny as the mouth grew and grew with an abnormal and extreme amount of teeth.
I often did other physical and interactive games like having students run to the word I showed a card to or gestured—each word would be attached to a point in the classroom on a wall.
I know it sounds grandiose, but the parents always seemed to think I was great at my job.
The word vulnerable means so many things to me. That word is like the coal to form the generator that makes the guiding energy for the ethics I follow in my life—I hold very strongly to these values that have developed on how to live—I can express it more later but I greatly attach a kind of Christian value system to it, which makes sense considering I was raised in a Lutheran household and always went to church, Sunday school, and went to my courses and went through my confirmation—everyone is a bit of a mop—some pick up clean water and others dirty or a mix of it—waiting to find the people to drain them voluntarily or involuntarily. I was born vulnerable. I walk pigeon-toed and grew up tripping on my feet—I speak with a soft feminine voice. Bipolar disorder makes somebody vulnerable. There was much vulnerability in being eighteen and hospitalized involuntarily for my first manic episode—tied to a stretcher. I have almost a sense of us vs them—the vulnerable and those that harm the vulnerable—take advantage of the vulnerable—I feel this is a very much Christian in the idea of the unfortunate are more holy than the rest of the bunch—children are like that in terms of being born into a cruel existence—a cruel existence I felt at times in my life and so many do—making sure harm does not come to those in need gives the light of purpose to go bright inside like a Christmas tree in my brain—this light of happiness and warmth. I never expected I would fall in love for teaching due to the antidepressant effect provided. It would become my career for a decade. Some grow up wanting to be a teacher, I became one by accident, desperation, and being saved.
Sometimes I inflate on self-hate like a helium balloon that needs to be tied to a wrist. The vulnerability equation is imprinted on my brain.
In my early teens I started struggling with bulimia and image. I remember when my mother caught me in the act. I was not offered help but criticized. I was called a girl for my problems and threatened to be taken somewhere to be fixed of my confusion. I don’t identify as transgender. I identify as a man that struggles with bulimia and happens to have feminine qualities.
I attribute it to circumstances that happened to me—a justification for the pain at times—an attack on aspects of bisexuality.
After a long day of work I did what my young self often did. I went clubbing with friends. I feel like even if I hide aspects of myself such as being bisexual, people can spot it regardless. I’m extremely secretive about it and not comfortable displaying that vulnerable aspect of myself.
My friend from England went with me. He was about six years my senior. Big guy. Tall. The clubs name was Maoye.
I always enjoyed the free drinks available to foreigners—it was done to attract Chinese clients, as the idea was foreigners being there would attract people.
Amongst the hot and sweltering crowd a man grabbed ahold of me. I felt stuck. I was taken off guard. Pushed and cornered. While on me I managed to push him off. But it all serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of my life.
A nail was placed into my hand—a constant burn and reminder of that vulnerability.
Part 2
From self-hate I can also be so grandiose. I am like a Christmas tree that is lit up. Sparklers so pretty that you cannot let go of them, even if it burns your fingertips and hurts.
From heroin to sex, you can smother the pain. You drain the ocean to fill a void in these times. It ties to mania as well. That restlessness and irritability is extinguished by the paradox of throwing kerosene to everything burning. I’m so grandiose to hide my insecurities, I mistake my misfortune as a mark of something ugly virtuous—the neon of vulnerability pulsating like a star within me. Swelling on a pain.
Bad habits. I want you to judge me and tell me what’s wrong with me. Give me a verdict.
Stress a trigger for mania, and I was stressed from the incident I had experienced at the club. I bloated like a tick to distract from locusts of thoughts that could not shut up with their commotion.
I had been sleeping around more than before. My brain was Christmas tree lights. I accelerated on a generator—I made a mixed episode worse.
Tease a disaster when you are heightened like a blimp. Full of hydrogen. Hoping to burn up ad rain down like napalm.
When the pretty candles on the Christmas tree are left untouched—not looked at like a kettle on burner that has been forgotten—the dry neglected tree will into a house fire.
I’ve had four attempts in my life so far.
When I attempt I don’t cry for help. I feel too vulnerable. I’m afraid.
Hate police and wards.
Downing pills.
My past failed attempts made me aware of everything done wrong before. The sleeping pills alone might not do what I was looking for at that time. I bought an electrical cable. This way if it failed I would still be unconscious and choked out by the cord—fail safe plan to end my life.
The words coming out of my mouth slowed down. I started getting second thoughts. Stuck my face towards the toilet bowl while on my knees. Sticking my fingers down my throat. Leaving blood vessels bursting in my eyes.
Went stumbling outside and waved a taxi down and asked to be taken to the local hospital.
Never expected finding myself checked into a psych ward in a foreign country.
Nietzsche has a quote in reference to chaos in life and how it is needed to create a star—this reference holds so much value to me. Sometimes stars hit together just right to create fate out of the worst of things. The ward lead me to meet the woman made of paper. She would one day become my wife. I would have two daughters with her. Forge together as soldiers to face the obstacles in life. Someone who would save my life during a future attempt when I was found unconscious from an overdose. The smartest and toughest woman I have ever known. Someone to build trenches with.
I liked it when she stuck that needle in me for an IV. It must correlate to being a heroin addict. The pushing of something in my vein correlates to happiness and purity.
The woman made out of paper was my nurse in the ward I was stuck in. What attracted her to the mess that is me I will never understand fully.
The woman made out of paper is named Lilu. She was one year older than me and one of my nurses at that ward in Taiyuan. She was from Zhengzhou—a city in the province of Henan that is based in the center of China. I am sure as the reader it would be nice to know why I call her the woman made of paper.
She struggled with her own demons. She also deserves much praise for her resilience and brains. When she was born she was raised by a family that adopted her and often neglected and abused her growing up. Her biological family is distant from her, even though she has an identical twin—they felt too poor to take care of her and made the choice that they needed to be less of one child as she also has an older sister—her twin got to stay with that family but she was given up and adopted. I am sure this must bother her even if she never will talk about it to anyone in her life—as she is one to refuse ever discussing emotions and feelings, as this is not her personality type—she is very much a fighter. I think most would struggle with wondering why they were the one let go of—it also must hurt her knowing that the family would have a son and keep him.
Despite all these circumstances, she graduated top of her class of four thousand students—Chinese high schools can be quite large serving a large region—they often serve as boarding schools. She was a smart and hardworking student. Circumstances never made her stop trying to be the best and moving forward and she never made excuses for herself. In university she also did well and got accepted at the most studious and hard to obtain nursing position at the number one hospital in Shanxi.
I have already ranted and gone on about my affection and feelings tied to heroin. Drinking of entire oceans to fill voids.
Paper is a void. It asks for calligraphy to be written on it to make braille. This way when fingers run over skin, it tells worth—the reason for troubles—it forms connection through those words of declaration—the whining for why things are the way they are—the filling of a void like a heroin addict needing a cure—two papers come together to write upon one another—as a paper I am her typo—I stand as a falling mess with nerves like tripwire, I keep failing and losing my composer, while she stands stronger as a declaration that has been written on—when I was chased I listened to her and joined as one. I wish and intend to always serve the woman made out of paper who has saved my life and has always been there for me, being so strong despite circumstances—amongst the wind of turmoil in life I follow along her path.
It was love at first sight for her but not for me. I had no interest in dating her at the time. I worked across the street of that hospital in an office building for a training center as a part time job. I would teach adults English who paid for private lessons near to Yingze park in the center of Taiyuan. She signed up for classes for me to teach her and brought me food on almost every other day that she had prepared. Eventually we found ourselves coupled fully.
In a pit. I get to burn as paper amongst another’s paper. Eternally. With a life that will keep reoccurring.
Part 3 Liu
A woman like Chang’e lived on a moon. Far away.
You can refer to me as Liu.
At the age of 19 I was diagnosed with a severe nerve pain condition. It is called trigeminal neuralgia but you can call it TN for ease.
I was frustrated. I had completed a degree in international finances from Chongqing University of Business and Technology. The boom of the economy was not the same. There was an urge to “lay flat”—to not try as a form of opposition to everything going on in a waning economy in China.
All are elephants chained for an audience. People love to peek and stare as though they are glass doors without hinges—to be made feel useless.
I developed TN at the age of 19, and was now 22. It came as an arrow, and quite literally to the face. It’s a rare nerve pain disorder often considered one of the most painful conditions known.
The illness involves intense nerve pain throughout the left side of my face. It felt like someone was trying to pull all of the teeth on the left side of my face without anesthesia. The pain can leave me falling to the floor unable to speak or move while screaming profanities while choked by pain. A feeling of a knife to my face over and over again. It leaves me in absolute shock. Like Roman candles to the face. An absolute hindrance. The anticipation of not knowing when it will happen again is a nightmare at times.
The disease is often called the suicide disease, apparently up to 26% try to take their lives. In a state of panic during one of the nerve attacks I began swallowing any pill near to me. I went to the hospital to have my stomach pumped when I was found comatose by my mother.
I want to be Chang’e and on the moon and away from a world I have had enough of.
Gossip spread around the workplace that I attempted suicide over an affair with a married man. There was too much guilt to return to the workplace. COVID did have an impact to the economy. I still remember my hometown having dirt and trees piled onto the exits and entrances to the city keep people in their places.
The work I did find felt beneath me. China has what is called the great firewall that keeps something in and out of the country’s networks. A VPN was necessary to access American TikTok as it was used as opposed to the Chinese version.
Feels humiliating the nature of the outcome for me—I gave up in many ways like so many Chinese youth. For work I would go to a local office building. Amongst a long hall would be a room for live stream performers. I would entertain with watchers while trying to obtain virtual gifts for actual money. I despised it—sometimes the conversation could be funny or interesting but it felt hollow.
I would paint flowers on my face and wear hanfu clothing while doing ASMR.
I had a mind of sparklers burning until it burnt and stung like wax—like I had the option to stop and cry and those tears stuck as wax and burnt or I soldiered on and grew accustomed to the pain. I was an elephant chained. The audience watched and interacted with me on the live. I was a chained elephant when it was found out about my previous attempt and when the rumors spread.
Too many thorns in life. Nails hitting at the wrong points like an equation for something terrible to eventually happen.
My favorite dish was Henan noodles. I often cooked it with my mom. It provides great memories of childhood. I hadn’t talked to my mother as much as before. She moved to a job in Taiyuan.
Sometimes I would go up to visit her. But it was harder as she worked more and more hours. Sometimes voids build even when going through extreme nerve pain. And with trigeminal neuralgia, the pain was so intense that I would freeze and scream in pain. It cannot always be hid. It made me an elephant tethered.
Life can be like a pressure like no other. Too much stress. Makes one feel irritable with a mouth like a sprinkler of napalm when someone is too close. Life feels like a lit fire cracker held—in the end it would tear my hand up. Things kept building while the other side of my face began to hurt too recently. This was rare and not so common. My eyesight was becoming blurry too and it seemed I might have multiple sclerosis as the pain was on both side, it was not common for my age, and the blurry eyesight. An appointment was scheduled and I felt terrified to know what was going on and wondered if it was best to not even know my health.
I walked out of the studio and had a cigarette. My boss came out and joined to talk. He was concerned about view count and wanted me to do things to increase it that made me feel uncomfortable. He made a few comments I found incentive.
The boss sure liked to criticize and apply pressure. He was not impressed with my work and thought I could do something different. In China an application is used called WeChat. This application has many uses. People can display and share moments like a Facebook wall, message each other, send money, video chat, and even has a feature to find people near to you who are also looking for people near to them. I was to attract people onto dates. The idea was they would be lured in and the men would go to a set destination to a planned tea house that served snacks. When the men arrived (they had no knowledge of the setup) the bill would be at an absurd rate and if the men refused to pay larger men would use their size to force them to pay up.
I was not sure at the time yet if I wanted the job. Being worried about ethics and safety. It was something I would have to think about.
My medical expenses were growing and I knew the nerve disease could be expensive to treat with surgery. All I had was thoughts while looking at the moon.
Part 4 Taishen
My former roommate in the ward I shared a room with had paranoid schizophrenia. I was stuck in the same place due to mania, and just had gotten my diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
I was so pissed being stuck there and felt I had no business being there. I found my diagnosis to be an insult to me. I was only 18 at the time—taken in on a stretcher. Made me feel very vulnerable and irritated.
My roommate was having delusions related to Christianity and could not stop waking me up in the middle of the night to ask and talk about Jesus. Left me beyond frustrated.
He was drifting from his wife and would go on and on about intending to leave her. Felt he was spied and plotted against by her. So we were both frustrated with being there.
The toilets were special. They would flush what needed to be flushed but not certain things like pills—it helped to keep people from hiding they were not taking their medications.
He had tried to flush his wedding ring down the toilet but he did not realized it didn’t flush. I went to use the restroom later and saw the ring. I told him. He took it out. He found it to be a sign form God that he is to stay with his wife, and there was immense happiness in his eyes.
Part 5 Liu
I’m a missile from Zhengzhou
Where my face is printed with flowers
Left university with hope
A blimp
To be ripped
Abrasion and termites
Eat me whole until I undo
Caught to the wires around me
Laying flat
Hoping for something new.
My name is Michelle. I had been at the local foreigner bar. I was raided in Zhengzhou. I lost my job recently. I’m 22 and wanted to work in business, but it will not do. Lost
Now I was working at a TikTok farm. I’m a busy ant.
I can’t remember much. My anti-convulsion meds make my mind feel muddy. I spend nights playing with my tarot cards wondering what I got to do to get to a place better.
Driving me crazy taking meds because my face started to hurt me. Feels like a bolt to my face—absolute torture!—suicide disease—that is what the doctors told me.
So I had an attempt and all my coworkers thought I had an affair.
All the gossip was like blitzkrieg so I ran away—I quit. And I need to make money because I’m sick and don’t want the nerve pain. Hoping surgery can save me. So I found myself working making money on live streams doing ASMR. I put on beautiful hanfu and paint flowers on my face. I’m waiting for gifts. But my boss hates me. Maybe because I don’t fit the picture. It’s not in my character to lay flat.
I speak English fluently. So my boss thinks I’m perfect for something new. I go on WeChat waiting for strangers to go on the social app looking for affairs. Foreigners that are easy to pull likes moths to lights. I flirt with them. Ask them to me in the middle of the night. We go to predestined positions. Guys thinking they are getting something that night. A couple larger men come to force the unexpected men to pay an astronomical bill that is not just for the snacks served.
This became my routine. But onetime it really bad. A Canadian I met in the street did not act right. He appeared to be bouncing and deranged. Like he was on some kind of upper. Offered me white powder. My sensors went off. I’m a missile. I know when something is off. Ready to do what I have to. He came close. I shoved him. I was near the location for the setup. My colleagues heard the commotion. Hands went. The crazed Canadian fell to the ground and never woke up again. Not knowing what to do. I went off like a missile and ran. The fear…
Part 6
I thought of it as I got lost. I’m a butterfly from Zhengzhou. From the center of Henan in China. I float off. Cause I’m stuck. No symmetry in my fate. Came under the ground as a Cicada. Went looking for something great but I’m not far. Just stuck, like a sun that won’t rise up. Call me Liu.
I developed the suicide disease when I was 19. It leaves my facing in tremendous pain on the left side. Makes me fall down and want to die. 26% will commit suicide. I often painted flowers on the side to grant some beauty to what happens to me. This disease caused all my teeth, gums, and entire left side to turn to intense electrical stabbing pain. There would be no warning before an attack. Paranoia of not knowing when the next one will come.
Had a decent job that seemed to be fit and good for me. The attacks brought me to my knees and made me eat carpet. Brought me to a frantic spell that caused me to overdose. Rumors spread at work that it was due to shame I had for having an affair with a married man.
I left the career devastated. I was shamed out of it.
I had temporarily found myself stranded into a career on a TikTok farm in Zhengzhou performing ASMR.
I was transplanted to a new career after a horrible incident. I had ran off to Guangzhou to where my cousin lives.
I want symmetry in my life. There is none. Just instability and pain.
Do you believe in the transplantation of thoughts? I do.
Do you believe in the transplanting of thoughts? I do. Learned about it before in a book. My friend beside me nodded after having taken their fentanyl based medicine earlier. Tiring doing odd jobs to pull off getting ahold of things.
I walked by and entered my workplace. I walked into the studio that was based in Guangzhou. I was handed my flyers. I headed to the street and began passing them out to advertise for a local KTV with women wearing little to no clothing on them.
A man walked by on the sidewalk. Some man looked like someone I must know before. Ever ad that feeling? But I could not know for sure or remember exactly. I awkwardly stared him up and down.
The man I had a hard time recognizing started to feel all too familiar. It was like I could read his thoughts. I have a projector head. Sometimes I can see everything. I feel it like rays of the sun on my skin—so natural and calling. Like Chang’e on the moon so far away looking down on a lover she misses—this man was sending radio signal signals from his marrow. A special type of attraction. Need attention like the world has been cruel to me. A world that has abandoned me.
The books were right that I had been reading. He must of noticing my odd staring. He took a flyer from me. Stumbled a bit while trying to understand what was going on. I pointed at the establishment I worked and told him he should visit. He gave a smile before departing it. I’m sure heaven can talk—gave orders to lift the anchors to provide transportation to a new fate.
It was exciting to know I might get to meet him, but I had concerns. In the evening I would work within the KTV. Depending on the occasion I would sometimes get to dress in hanfu, which I enjoyed. I sometimes search for distraction as there is something wrong with the way my thoughts transfer. When you live a life under threats and violence—feelings of being trapped in life—you naturally see people with masks. They either pose a threat or are safe and you must view them in black and white. There is no time to see things in grey—too much danger in doing that. I must have a negative perspective on the world around me like a cocoon to stay safe. Like a butterfly I go to faces to see if they bite or have pollen. I believe the man today had pollen. I truly can read minds.
Part 7
Black and white thinking originates like an atom bomb. It tears a mind into a black hole of horrible events. Leaves craters like hole as cheese in the brain—provides the surface to create something that absorbs like a sponge. Pain that radiates through to create the velocity of irritated atomic steam engine that can send signals out. It burns. Cheese head with holes right through like a particle accelerator went right through. Fox holes in the brain when it feels in danger. A life of a perpetual civil war. It is painful.
Such thinking with holes causes one to be prone to have memories fall through black holes and be forgotten. Never can be found. Blanks.
The man that thoughts transpired to earlier in the day went by the name of Muchen. It was like seppuku in attraction. Fusion. We met at the designated room he had gotten with his friends to rent out to have there to host. Drinks are bought as a form of payment. Transplanting of thoughts wears the brain like sandpaper waves of abrasion.
I don't trust you as the reader. You been holding for a long time And I feel attachment with you that makes me very unsafe. I don’t trust you anymore. I rather you stop putting eyes on me. It makes me run off very fast. I’m uncomfortable. The most benign things come across as dangerous to me. And I want you to step away.
Part 8
I like this man I met. He makes me whole. He is the light for everything dark around me. My boss made me feel what I never felt before. He is so nice! Not like the other guys who talk with words that split my insides. I can do the same. Like a cycle hate goes around in love.
He get so lonely at night. But I have the right company.
I’m feeling so nice
Everything just so happy
Tapping away on my phone
Writing poetry
Because my heart grows
Swell like a balloon
Don’t you want to pop it?
Simmer
Like acne to pop.
I kept writing poetry about my feelings of this man. I could not get him out of my head. The strength of transplanted thoughts. I keep going forever. Like a phony I feel. My boss was the man I transplanted thoughts with. He worked at a local host club. For where women and gay men could go and pay drinks for male hosts to sit with them and keep them feeling loved and entertained. I fused to him like atoms in the sun. He was a host at this club. I would host at my location and meet him. We were each other’s. Eating ourselves together.
to be continued..

2024.05.04 00:17 AbleCat1 Is Waiting it out worth it?

Im 14, And I live in the state of New Mexico. I live in a trailer with my grandma (Its a older alfa trailer). Its sort of in the middle of nowhere the closest good store is about an hour and 30 mins away. We also have mice and they’re kinda just here I see there poop on the counter sometimes but not too much. We also don’t have running wateseptic we dug a trench last year but its filling up and I don’t see me and her digging another one for awhile. I used to be bused to school in another town (30ish mins away) but I live so far away its a 2 hour bus ride. And I cant even make it too my bus stop in the winter mainly because the roads where I live are all dirt and the snow makes it muddy. Im currently doing homeschooling and it’s pretty bad… She wont even let me do k-12 so I could atleast earn a degree. She says its not in my best interest and im in a white mans world. Stuff like that and I stink… I hate to admit that but sweating and no running water as a teen sucks… I normally have to boil some water and pour it in a bowl and clean up that way. She also keep’s chickens in the trailer next too my bed (i sleep in the living room) But thats only to say a few things. (If this post violates the guidelines could someone tell me where i should post this?)

2024.05.01 21:33 MadMan1244567 Concerned about visiting the Northeast of Brazil. Is it worth it?

(Posso ler português então se você quer deixar a resposta em português, sinta-se à vontade)
Context:
I’m a 22 y/o brown man (South Asian ethnicity, born & brought up in Europe) who is fluent in Spanish, proficient in Portuguese and has extensive solo travel experience in Latin America. I’ve been all over Southeast and South Brazil (RJ, MG, DF, SP, PR, SC…), as well as Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Chile…
Should I visit the northeast, this would be my broad plan:
Fly into São Luis, go onto to Lençóis Maranheses, Jericoacara, Fortaleza, João Pessoa, Recife, Salvador, (all by bus), and then continue back down into Rio and São Paulo (fell in love with these places so will have to revisit if I go to Brazil again)
I am a city person more than a nature person, with deep interests in history, economics, culture… as well as wanting to experience nightlife (Latin Americans really know how to throw a party), meet new people etc. Lençóis looks stunning, but otherwise I’m not crazy interested in hiking or remote beaches etc.
I really want to visit the Northeast of Brazil; as I understand it’s like a different country from the southeast and South, and just from visiting those regions Brazil has become one of my favourite places in the world. I never really felt unsafe either anywhere in Latin America (except maybe Bogotá, Colombia, and the late night Uber drives from Centro back to the hostel in Rio), but I took a lot of precautions & was very conscious of my surroundings at all times.
Even so, I’m apprehensive about visiting the Northeast of Brazil for one major reason: safety and security.
Look, I know people like to say Rio etc is dangerous - but statistically, it’s really not. The homicide rate, while high, is still comparable with most big US cities. And Sao Paulo statistically is actually very safe.
However, this isn’t the case with the Northeast of Brazil - with many of the cities I want to visit falling amongst the most dangerous by homicide rates in the world: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_homicide_rate
I mean, Salvador has a higher homicide rate than Port-au-Prince in 2022…
In fact, the reason I avoided these north eastern cities on my first trip is because they statistically are so unsafe. Although I did visit some Mexican cities with comparable rates of violence like Guadalajara, this is mainly restricted to cartels. Brazil, despite having prolific gangs, doesn’t have organisations as powerful or violent as the cartels in Mexico - so the fact these cities still have such high rates of violence is more concerning.
I really want to return to Brazil - is the Northeast really that dangerous? I categorically cannot risk a meaningful chance getting injured in an assault. If there’s a very real chance that happens, I’d rather visit the centre west or explore more of the interior of MG or GO than visit the northeast. But I want to know what the on the ground reality is like. I’ve heard people (Brazilians) say things like one wrong turn in Fortaleza, Recife or Salvador could genuinely be life endangering. Assuming I stay in all safer parts of cities, If I go clubbing and take an Uber back late at night, just how dangerous is that? Are the overnight intercity buses safe?

Concerned about visiting the Northeast of Brazil. Is it worth it?

2024.04.29 23:04 Necessary_Cod1108 San Pancho (experience guide)

Hi All
I prepared a guide if you guys decide to go to San Pancho
SAN PANCHO NOT A TRAVEL GUIDE… (AN EXPERIENCE GUIDE)
Where is San Pancho?
First things first… Where is San Pancho? Our lovely town is enclaved between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre. Located 7 minutes from Sayulita in the state of Nayarit in Mexico, it is surrounded by a dense jungle and the beautiful blue water sea a combination that will steal your heart.
San Pancho, is within the so called Riviera Nayarit, It has evolved from a small fishing town into a place where people all around the world go to escape from the routine or to reconnect with nature and to immerse themselves into an authentic Mexican experience.
How to get to San Pancho?
By Air: San Pancho is conveniently located approximately an hour away from Puerto Vallarta. Visitors can fly into Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVR) and opt for a taxi or Uber service to San Pancho, costing around 900 MXN. For the adventurous spirits, buses are also available just outside the airport, departing every 20 minutes, offering a journey of about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach San Pancho with a cost of 80 MXN.
From Guadalajara: For travelers coming from Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco and Mexico's second-largest city, a well-maintained four-lane highway connects directly to San Pancho. This route, equipped with toll booths, entails an approximate total cost of 1,000 MXN, with a travel time averaging around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
What to do?

Volunteer at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center
Giving something back to nature in San Pancho sounds like a fulfilling and impactful activity. By helping at the center, volunteers can assist in the conservation of sea turtles, which are ancient creatures that choose the beaches of San Pancho to lay their eggs. Activities might include monitoring the beaches at night for nesting turtles, helping to protect eggs from predators, and assisting in the release of hatchlings back into the ocean. This type of volunteer work not only contributes to the preservation of a vulnerable species but also offers a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility and the importance of each individual’s role in minimizing our impact on the planet. It’s a chance to ensure that the life cycle of these remarkable turtles continues unbroken, providing an invaluable experience that connects you closely with nature and the local ecosystem.

2024.04.28 16:11 Wise-Zombie-9808 Pro palestinians use empty political declarations, ignoring anti semitism amongst palestinians

I don't know, shouting words like "genocide" and "apartheid" while calling for "intifada", "death to zionists" and "from the river to the sea"(where 7 million israeli jews live alongside 2 million israeli arabs) while defending hamas that actually says its primary goal is to kill as many jews as possible at any cost, even if the cost is the lives of palestinian civilians.
As for the apartheid statement - palestinians can enter israel, they do have to go through a border checkpoint, but I dont see how its different than entering america from mexico, prior to october 7th many palestinians worked in israel on a daily basis, some workers from gaza actually helped hamas on october 7th by giving them directions inside the israeli towns near gaza where they worked, even aiding in the killing of humanitarian activists that lived there solely to help palestinians. If an israeli tries to enter jericho, nablus or gaza, he would be killed immediatlely, and his body would be paraded on the streets. How is this an apartheid?
About the genocide statement - israel probably has the most technologically advanvced army in the middle east, there are 2 million palestinians who live there in an insane population density, after six month of war that was ignited by hamas, the ruling party in gaza, there are less than 40,000 casualties (this number also has many statistical problems, and is not very credible due to the fact that the health ministry in gaza is run by hamas). If Israel actually intends to commit genocide, which it has no actual insentive to do, it does a really bad job at this "genocide", warning civillians to leave targeted areas and allowing humanitarian aid to enter a warzone is not something mass murderers do.
Intifada - I keep hearing people saying intifada means revolution, as though it is the litteral meaning of the word, intifada carries a much darker contextual meaning - arabs going to civillian areas stabbing and shooting civillians, or bombing themselves in buses, resturants and other densly populated areas to take the lives of as many jews as possible, protestors calling for peace while shouting intifada is really self destructive to the palestinian nerrative, problematic as it is..
"From the river to the sea" is actually a genocidal statement, the river is the river jordan and the sea is the mediterrenan sea, this is all the land of israel/palestine, where over 7 million jews live, considering that hamas in gaza openly and actively calls for the death of jews, and that the palestinian authority in the west bank pays salaries to palestinians that kills jews, i do believe the intentions of the palestinian goverment is to wipe out the only jewish state in existence.
Also heared many pro-palestinians saying that arabs and jews lived in peace in the land before the zionist movement in 1890, completely ignoring arab pogroms on jews such as the 1834 hebron massacare and many other similar events throughout history.
I dont think Israel is a state of saints, war by its core is not a moral thing, nor do i dismiss the suffering of palestinians, now and throughout the years. but i believe in order for there to be peace in the land palestinians must first accept that there is a jewish state in the land, it has been there for the past 76 years, and had historical roots in the land for the past 3000 years. Why do palestinians need the destruction of israel in order to have their own state? I don't see jews stabbing people in europe to get back everything the europeans took from them during ww2.
I really do want to have a civlised discussion about it.
May there be peace and love to all of us.
