2024.05.15 23:35 objet-incomplet Does your Pocket's screen have a tiny bit of overscan? Here's how you can find out for certain.

The 240p test suite has plenty of nifty tools to test screen alignment, colors, and audio on the Game Boy but it also confirmed what I suspected about my particular display. There appears to be a single pixel of overscan on the right. This isn't particularly noticeable but I would expect a more perfect alignment for the price this thing sells for.
On the other hand, this appears to be a known issue from posts such as this and this. If you wanna test this out yourself, run the GB rom from your SD card; you can find the latest version of the test suite on the releases page of the GitHub repo. Once you have the ROM loaded, load the Overscan tool. Ideally, you'd want to hit select to invert colors as it makes it easier to see the borders. You can then press A along with any of the directional buttons to confirm exactly where the borders disappear. Pressing start also brings up the instructions in case my explanation wasn't very clear. Cheers!
Also, I'm not certain to what extent this is a problem on the Pocket. Except for the two posts already linked above, I couldn't see any other discussions about it. Would be interested in knowing if this is a widespread issue or just unfortunate QC on some units.

I just got the anbernic rg 556 and decided to exchange the sd card that came with it for a samsung 512 gb. However, emulators, except drastic, cannot find the roms in it. I have tried with psx, gba and psp. Does anyone know if there is a tutorial?

2024.05.15 18:43 Kitchen_Drummer_4107 Major Overheating Issue: Battery or Board?

I have an original RG35xx before the upgraded hardware model was released. Owned/played with it for a few hours per day. The first few weeks went by without any major problems. Love the thing!
However, it took a dump on me one day after trying out a 8bitDo wireless controller (via OTG cable+Dongle) it powered itself down while I had it charging and using the HDMI out > PC Monitor. Upon picking up the device, I noticed it was incredibly hot to the touch. I couldn't place my fingers on the lower half of the device without having to recoil from the heat. I allowed the device to cool completely before attempting to power it back on.
Everything booted up fine, my roms/saves/etc were all there and the OS was running normally. I began playing a game without any of the external hookups, just plain old handheld mode like I normally would. Upon booting a PSX title, I hadnt even fully loaded into the game before noticing that the USB-C charging port was already getting hot near my pinky fingers at the bottom. The plastic case surrounding the battery also felt warmer than usual. I returned to the main menu and just held the device tightly in my palm for a minute or so. It became increasingly hotter, eventually bordering on "too hot to handle" so I powered it down again, manually. Bringing my face closer to the device, I could smell a slight scent coming from the hot plastic/battery location.
This prompted a few frustrating days worth of failed attempts to troubleshoot the issue away. I attempted using a new SD Card and fresh flash of Garlic OS. (The CFW I was using when the first overheating issue occured), I returned to the unaltered stock card that came with the device and even tried allowing the battery to fully drain before a fresh charge and boot in case the battery was just acting oddly. Not a single thing I tried returned positive results. I eventually ordered a compatible replacement battery on AliExpress and put the thing away in defeat.
Here we are now, nearly a month later and the battery shows up in my mailbox. (I had completely forgotten about bringing the thing back to life) I was very excited to get home from work this morning to get the new battery installed for a test.
Alas; Battery replacement + all the other bells, whistles and kitchen sinks thrown at it, and it's still hotter than snot after being powered on for 10+min while simply sitting on the main menu.
I can confirm only a few things after troubleshooting:
• Using two separate, reputable SD cards (SanDisk/Samsung) flashed with compatible versions of Batocera, Garlic or Stock OS's all exhibited the same overheating issues (I'm aware this is most likely hardware related but many folks in this sub like to cry foul on the OS/SD before considering the entire complexity of each reported issue)
• New Battery still overheats (doesn't have to be charging) sigh
• This issue persists even when underclocking settings
• My refund window is well past-due and Amazon won't budge this time for me
I guess I'm here as a last ditch effort before adding it to my e-waste pile. I currently own a few other retro handhelds and thoroughly enjoy watching this market develop.
Has anyone else experienced overheating to this degree/frequency when using this or any other Anbernic devices?
Can anyone attest to Anbernic's customer service/support team? I've heard mixed reviews and decided against reaching out myself due to my purchase being made on Amazon and not through their direct webpage.
Which Retro Handheld(s) new or old would you recommend as a daily driver? I'd like to push up to GameCube/PS2 if fiscally viable. I've got a few in mind but would love to hear other's thoughts, considering I'll probably be back in the market for something like the one I'm about to lay to rest.
Thank you for taking the time to read and/or respond. Happy Gaming Ya'll

2024.05.14 23:48 tadmeister69 retroarch on 3DS - no cores available. Please help!

I've installed retroarch (stable v1.17.0) via cia on my 3DS, copied the retroarch folder to the root of my SD card, copied the core files for the emulators I plan to use to /retroarch/cores and all the info files to /retroarch/cores/info. I then try to load some ps1 roms I have stored in /roms/psx but I get the message saying there's no cores installed. Happens on every rom I've tried, even for other systems like the genesis too.
I've gone into settings/directories and verified "cores" points to "/retroarch/cores/" and "cores info" points to "/retroarch/cores/info" but still no luck. Also tried manually installing the pcsx_rearmed_libretro.cia core which has installed like an app on my 3DS and no luck. Trying to re-load the core in retroarch says it's installed and trying to update the core also says I'm running the latest version.
Also tried updating retroarch in the app which has taken it to 1.18.0 and still no luck on that version either.
Anything I'm missing or anything anyone can recommend to try? Thanks for any help.

2024.05.12 04:35 Nervous-Touch6591 HoloISO Immutable, edit fstab?

Hello all,
recently I installed HoloISO onto an old Dell Optiplex for PC gaming in my living room with a controller. It’s worked very well and has been a joy to run without any problems.
Recently I noticed the project has moved repos and been made Immutable. I know little about immutable systems myself.
Now I have a USB drive filled with emulator roms that I frequently switch between my desktop and my “Steam Machine.” I’ve made an fstab entry for it since SteamOS/HoloISO does not detect the usb stick unless you switch to desktop mode first. The fstab entry fixes that problem.
Im considering updating to the Immutable OS for the latest updates but I want to be able to keep this specific functionality, or find a work around that doesn’t require frequently booting to desktop mode, since my parents also use this for MAME games and don’t have the patience for “Linux shenanigans” like I do.
Will it be possible to edit the fstab or find a different work around for this specific problem in the Immutable version of the OS?

Dumb question but which file types do you keep for different systems? I've got two file types for the following roms:
I just realized the other day, beyond the PS2 ISOs I haven't used the largeolder formats in forever? Can I just get rid of them or are there reasons (like the PS2 MC loader) to keep them?
Thanks!

2024.05.09 16:34 succesfulway Dreamcast multi-discs games

I have the Trimui smart pro and I want to play multi-discs games I have 2 files: re2(disc1).CHD and re2(disc2).CHD. Is there any way to mix them like the .pbp PSX games?
If not, do I need to create a .m3u list or can I swap the disc from RetroArch without the .m3u list
If I have to create the m3u list do I need to launch the games from the m3u list files or the normal way from the rom files?
Thanks in advance

2024.05.09 12:48 5pla77er Update on gb_cardputer

Update on gb_cardputer
(Major yapping ahead, scroll to the bottom for a TLDR! Also my english is kinda bad 🫡)
Hey! I’m the creator of gb_cardputer. I’ve seen a few people on here have issues with the emulator so I wanted to address a couple of things.
First of all, I recommend everyone who’s using gb_cardputer to check out its Github repo, as the version you’re running may be outdated. If the main menu has small text, and uses L to launch games, then you’re using an older version of the emulator. Newer versions do not change much, but they do have a nicer main menu than can be navigated using the arrow keys and enter. In-game controls haven’t changed. I’ve attached an image to this post so you can see what the menu looks like in newer releases.
Keep in mind that I wasn’t the one who uploaded gb_cardputer to the M5Burner repos, and I have nothing against that, but the version uploaded on there is not the latest one.
I’ve also seen some people have SD Card issues (which does not include read_rom_to_ram errors, I’ll talk about that later). I generally recommend using FAT32 formatted SD Cards, I personally use a generic 4 GB card and have had no issues with gb_cardputer or any of the other firmware I’ve tried. Keep in mind that support for high capacity SD Cards and other filesystems might be limited on the Cardputer.
The emulator reads ROM files in the root folder of your SD Card. I’ve seen people say that the ROMs just have to be in the same directory as the firmware’s file, but that’s not true! The emulator only looks for files in the root directory, so if you store ROMs anywhere else, the emulator will not be able to find them.
Now let’s talk about the read_rom_to_ram errors. I’ll need to dive a bit into how gb_cardputer works, so if you don’t wanna read a wall of text I’ll add a TLDR at the end.
As you might know, gb_cardputer relies on a great open source project called Peanut-GB for emulation. I made this choice mainly because writing emulators is hard, and I have next to no knowledge of how the GameBoy’s CPU works, so using a premade library was the easiest way to get an emulator running. In the end, that’s what gb_cardputer is, a quick and dirty experiment I made earlier this year to see if I could get GameBoy emulation to run on the cardputer at all.
Other than the fact that Peanut-GB has a somewhat limited list of compatible games even when running on hardware that’s orders of magnitude more powerful, like a PC, I implemented ROM loading in the easiest way possible, that is, simply reading the ROM contents from the SD Card into a buffer and passing that along to Peanut-GB. This can be an issue for bigger GameBoy games which have a larger ROM size than the cardputer’s ram size (512 KB).
The reason the GameBoy could run these games, which sometimes were as big as 2 MB, is that the GameBoy’s CPU had direct access to the cartridge’s memory, which means that it didn’t have to load all of the ROM’s content at once, but could instead request data as soon as it needed it straight from the cartridge bus. Since the cardputer uses SD Cards for long term storage, that wouldn’t really be possible to implement as the bus isn’t that fast and there’s also a filesystem in the way to slow things down even further, not to mention that it would be way out of this project’s scope.
The last thing I have to say is, if there’s anyone reading this who’s willing to pick this project up, or even rewrite a new emulator from scratch, please do! I’m going to archive gb_cardputer’s repo as, in my opinion, it’s served its purpose as a proof of concept. Please feel welcome to fork it, I’d love to see someone more experienced than me turn this experiment into a proper emulator!
I hope this answers the questions people had about gb_cardputer. It’s not like they were asked that much, but I still felt that it was important to write this post just to let others know in the future instead of having to look for answers in other threads.
TLDR: I’m archiving GB_Cardputer’s code, as I won’t be personally making any more changes to it, but others might. Make sure to use FAT32 formatted SD Cards and check the Github repo for updates, as the version uploaded on M5Burner is outdated.

2024.05.08 11:57 RosenEnGazon Bug to launch a PSX game ?

Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

2024.05.06 00:27 eduo Provenance upcoming - A primer

I'm in the Testflight for Provenance, where test versions are getting ready to be sent for review to Apple.
When it's available, there'll be a flurry of posts asking how to make it work. Provenance has a lot of documentation but since it also refers the sideloadable version it may not be up-to-date on time.
Provenance is being tested for iOS, iPadOS and tvOS. tvOS is giving some issues, so the first version in the App Store may not have tvOS support yet.
Provenance is a spiritual fork of Openemu, the best multi-emulator for MacOS, and it supports many systems. MANY. And a lot of them expect you to provide the BIOS of the original machine. You already know why. The easiest way to look for them is to either find in Google a pack of retrogaming bios but since Provenance provides the MD5 checksums it expects you can just search for those explicitly. "RetroPIE BIOS Collection" is a good term to search for.
Systems included in the beta:
An MD5 is a quasi-unique signature that helps make sure the file you're getting is the file you want. For example, if the BIOS page shows "281f20ea4320404ec820fb7ec0693b38" as the checksum it expects the file to have, you can just enter that into Google and it's likely the file to download will be the right one. It's even more likely that you'll find a pack of BIOS containing many other platforms.
As of today this is the list of BIOS names and their checksums for Provenance:
281f20ea4320404ec820fb7ec0693b38 5200.rom
fcd403db69f54290b51035d82f835e7b lynxboot.img

32736f17079d0b2b7024407c39bd3050 scph5552.bin
You will need to load BIOS in the same way you'd load ROMs, there's no separate way to load them from the application. There will also be no confirmation that what you loaded was what you needed but if you go to the BIOS section in Provenance it'll be ticket as green if OK.
One important note about ROMs loaded via Provenance, which can be confusing: Provenance accepts ZIP files, but will not auto-recognize the contents. This means that if you import a ROM for one platform it would auto-detect the extension if unzipped but will ask you to confirm what platform it's for if zipped. This can be confusing at the beginning.
Since so many systems and formats are supported, there's many cases you'll need to look out for regarding archiving formats, numbering and naming, etc. Be patient and take the time to learn the specifics you're interested in.
EDIT: you can become a member in Provenance’s Patreon to get access to the betas through TestFlight and help them test. just remember it’s unsupported during beta for anything other than reporting bugs.

2024.05.05 20:13 New_Confusion_5308 First time patcher, down a rabbit hole

Hey All,
I wondered if anyone has had any luck patching the Complete-Fire-Red-Upgrade from Skeli. Please and Thank you all so much in advance for any hints or help.
I'm using a Mac and have never used any form of coding before, I've added a screenshot of what I'm seeing (A large string of y's in terminal), I've installed devkitPro and Different versions of Python.
I'm following the instructions and using a bit of googling but I wonder where I'm going wrong. I'm following the instructions for Mac. I've added (???) wherever I've gotten stuck. Apologies if these seems basic, but I have no coding background and have exhausted looking up where I'm going wrong (apart from the obvious 'assembler could not be located' which I don't know why that's happening:
  1. Install devkitPro with instructions here.
  2. Export ${DEVKITARM}/bin/ to your PATH variable. (???)
  3. Make sure you've installed python 3.6+ and it can be called directly via either python or python3.
  4. Clone the repo and go inside:

git clone cd Complete-Fire-Red-Upgradehttps://github.com/Skeli789/Complete-Fire-Red-Upgrade
  1. Get your ROM into the current directory and rename it to BPRE0.gba.
  2. Configure the offset you want to insert the code: In scripts/make.py change OFFSET_TO_PUT=YYY to the location you want to insert the data. (???)
  3. Run python scripts/make.py (or python3 scripts/make.py if you’ve installed multiple python versions).

2024.05.04 21:25 Puzzleheaded-Try-687 Does the Duckstation performance reduce with more roms?

I have an RG556 and am using the Duckstation for PSX emulation. At first it did play the games with long but up times, but now it completely stopped working no matter what rom I try to load. The screen just stays black until I get a timeout message.
My theory was, that this might be because I have the whole PSX catalogue with over 1000 games on the SD card. When I open the app directly it always updates the whole library whenever I go to the library screen, which takes a few minutes with over 1000 games. Even when I just go to the settings and return to the library the app updates the library again. So maybe it's because whenever I start a game through Daijisho it somehow starts the library update in the background before starting the game, which causes an timeout. But in the beginning it did run, even though it took really long to boot up games. So maybe it's something different.
Has somebody else had the same problems? Or are there people with the RG556 and an enormous library, which works fine on the Duckstation?

2024.05.04 20:27 runningxbackwards Issues with Multi Disk PSX Batocera

Issues with Multi Disk PSX Batocera
First to be clear this is an issue with Batocera. (I say this because prior suggestions given where specific to Garlic or Stock)
I have my CHD files located in a Hidden subfolder. I have m3u files already created with the destination of each CHD and a m3u made for each game. Batocera shows the m3u and the hidden CHD, even when "Show hidden files" is set to no within Batocera.
Any idea on what I can do to fix this???
