I want you to understand me fully, because I find it immensely difficult to communicate any of this unless it is all laid out as one mindset, for I fear being misconstrued as ill-intended when for me this is an exercise of truth and speaking that truth which I feel. It is an exercise of honesty, and one of humility as I lay bare before your conscious attention the fullness of my feeling.
I have loved and I have lost. A number of times now, in various ways. I have explored depths of despair, loneliness, grief, trauma, and other shadowy sides to myself and after entertaining death itself for years, I have emerged refreshed and cleansed. I choose life and all that this incarnation has in store for me while my lungs continue to take breath and my heart continues to beat.
My orientation to life has long been to clench and grip and grab and tightly hold on to illusions of control and security. To ensnare people with untenable relationship arrangements founded on a lack of self-acceptance and love. To entertain conditional and transactional experiences with other humans, for fear of being taken advantage of. These seeds I have allowed to take root have sprung up many times, as I have continued to water and enrich them with anxieties and fears. No longer. I choose to live and to love. I choose to cultivate a space of love that welcomes and accepts and validates and entertains without the need for gripping and containing those who enter it. And as the space expands the walls of my heart, the incalculable depths of loving potential arise to the surface and saturate my being. I choose to be love itself, incarnate as far as my current form will allow. I honor my limitations and find great serenity in accommodating and challenging them in due course.
One of my core powers is understanding the nature of limitation itself. Thus I recognize that in terms of my love, a limit does not exist that can ever long persist. My love is infinite. Burner for privacy. I have anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, and depression. I’ve been on meds for over 20 years, usually SSRIs.
Every five to ten years the meds stop working and I have to work with a psychiatrist to find a new solution – but we’re always able find something that works.
A few years ago, I needed the reboot on my meds and, for the first time ever, a benzo was added to my daily SSRI. We went through a few before we landed on one that didn’t have any sedating effects on me – I ended up with a daily SSRI combined with 1mg of clonazepam 2x daily, and that’s what I’ve been on for years.
I don’t drink (ever, not even an occasional beer or cocktail) and other than occasional weed (very occasional – unless I’m in a really good place mentally, I just end up having a panic attack) I’ve never done a “drug” in my life. (I’m not judging anyone who has used benzos – or any other drug – recreationally; I’m only sharing because it provides context for my specific situation.)
My use of clonazepam is purely therapeutic and even in the beginning, I never felt anything that seemed like “hey, I get why people use this recreationally!” There was no “high” for me – just slowly my panic attacks and other symptoms started to subside, similar to the gradual improvement that an SSRI provides.
At this point, I know that it’s unlikely that the clonazepam is even doing anything for me – I know tolerance builds up quickly and my dose has never increased, so this is probably just a maintenance dose that I’m taking.
I recently moved and along with that move came a new psychiatrist. The new psychiatrist wants me off of the clonazepam, primarily because of the increased risk of early onset dementia (which I also looked into and it seems like the research isn’t conclusive and this might be a correlation doesn’t equal causation thing).
Despite that, I’m not opposed to removing clonazepam from my medication, especially since I know that it’s probably not even doing anything at this point, considering tolerance etc…
My psychiatrist wants to move me from clonazepam to diazepam (Valium) and begin a low and slow taper of at least nine months. I was looking into this and it sounds like his plan is to use the Ashton Manual, although he never said as much.
I’m diligent with my meds – I have a pill box I fill up weekly and I rarely miss a dose, but on the off chance that I do miss a dose, I’ve never had a “craving” for clonazepam or a feeling of mental addiction – I usually notice a missed dose only after more than 48 hours has passed and it’s usually a headache that acts as my reminder. But, again, there’s no desire – it’s just like “what the hell is with this headache?… oh, crap, I forgot to take my meds the last couple of days.”
I know, logically, that my body is physically addicted to the meds but from an emotional standpoint, if someone said “I’m throwing the clonazepam away and you can never have it again!” my reaction would mostly be… 🤷♂️
…until I started looking into what the discontinuation process would be like!
At first, my primary concern was moving to diazepam because I didn’t want to feel groggy or sedated.
Now that I made the mistake of Googling this, I’m terrified that I’m going to have hallucinations, experience horrible body pains, go into a deep depression, have constant panic attacks, and maybe even have grand mal seizures – and that it could last for years even after the taper is done and the last pill has been taken?! WTF?!?!
Most of the info I’ve been able to find is from people who were using benzodiazepines recreationally (and at potentially far higher doses than me) and went cold turkey or did a fast (like one month) taper in rehab.
My dose (1mg 2x daily) isn’t “low” but it’s an average therapeutic dose. My taper is going to be long – at least nine months.
Is there anyone here that can speak to a very long, very slow, very gradual, medically-supervised taper and discontinuation? Is it possible to do this safely and with minimal side effects? (If it makes a difference, I’m more concerned about mental side effects than physical.)
If you have a success story or a good story, I’d love to hear it – especially if you’re comfortable providing details like what benzo it was, how many years you were on it, what dose you were on, and what your taper schedule was like.
If you have a horror story, no need to share – the internet is already full of those! I’m looking for some reassurance, not more panic attack fuel.

I am an 18 year old online college student and I've always had a bit of trouble making friends and being able to keep them. My anxious tendency's make it hard for me to fully understand why someone would truly want to be my friend. I'm in therapy trying to work this my issues and trying to find better ways of communication. While I've only been in therapy for a short while I, personally, feel like made a ton of progress. I have contacted old friends and have made a couple new ones. I wouldn't go as far to say that I don't struggle with responding but I eventually will.
A big part of my anxiety is that I might take up "too much space", that my behavior would be "too much", that I would be annoying, and ultimately that people would hate be and I'd be lonely. My anxiety sometimes blinds me and I can't tell who I can and can't trust. I see the word alone being used a lot when people use it to describe how they feel but I don't feel alone. The word alone in the dictionary reads "having no one present" and the work lonely in the dictionary reads "without companions; solitary; cut off from others". I believe that the word lonely fits the description of my feeling better than alone. I know that I enjoy my alone time - my space - but for a long time I couldn't tell the difference between the two.
The first time I ever really felt my anxiety was in middle school. My younger self was much more open and optimistic than I am now. I still had that child-like wonder and sense of safety; like nothing could ever go wrong. I wish that feeling never left. As it is for most people, middle school was horrible. I remember being eccentric, happy, and very talkative. This was a direct hit for those "mean girl clicks" everyone had encountered in middle school. At that time I never really understand how cruel the world could truly be. This was the moment I truly felt the anxiety click in, hearing people talk behind your back then be so loving and caring to your face.I won't say that I am a saint because I know that I have also had rude conversations behind peoples backs and I can say nothing eats me alive more then knowing how rude I was. I know that it is almost impossible to get people to not talk about you behind your back, it happens to everyone but this never stopped me from trying.
Those "mean girl clicks" used to talk about how I'm too loud, annoying, they hated my hair, the way I dressed, etc. And I can positively say this went on with me though my entire life. I started dressing in all black, I would speak unless spoken to, I would keep my opinion to myself unless cued otherwise; I did all of this and more just to try and keep the attention off of me. I would keep a book with me at all times so I didn't disrupt anyone so that wouldn't be annoying. I was so fearful of seeing self-centered, being too much to handle, annoying, egotistical, and entitled to how much damage I was doing to my self worth in the long run. I wanted to so anything to avoid being those words because I thought that it would earn me friends; I thought that it would finally make me worthy.
All of this is to say that this was of living followed me though my life. Anytime someone needed something I was the first to volunteer, I wanted to help everyone in every way I could, I wanted to be a natural friend of people. A neutral friend - someone who was like enough to keep around but not noticeable enough to be talked about behind their back. I did this with everyone I met at school, work, family, etc. With this my therapist has helped me open up more and I've gotten more comfortable with myself and the fact that it's okay for me to take up space. However, I am still very aware of how I am acting and how I might be perceived. I think three times about what I am going to say before I say it to make sure I don't say anything that can hurt someone. Does it still accidentally happen, yes, but I am always empathic about it and I always apologize.
I have been in a bit of a job switch recently and I am working with people much older than me and I have had a hard time with management. My most recent bosses and have rude, unforgiving, and disrespectful. Now I understand that not all jobs will be perfect and for the most part you just have to deal with it but as I've said above I take comments that are made to me seriously. I know this can be a bad thing to do but my anxiety had a tendency to pick it up and run with it. My employer makes the schedule on a monthly basis, I am a full-time employee, and for the past two months I have worked 20-25 days each month and now the new schedule (June) I am only scheduled to work for 11 days. With quick math working 11 days can't pay my car insurance let alone the car note. I was understandably, in my opinion, upset and I took it up with them the next day so that I was not speaking out of anger in the moment. When I brought it up to my employer the next morning they told me that 30% of my productivity can from them helping me and the other 70% came from me working alone. I was essentially told that my productivity level was too low and that if I wanted to work more then I need to "prove myself". This honestly stirred a lot of my past worried and anxieties about never be good enough and not being worthy. And while that's not what was explicitly said it is what my anxiety heard.
When I finally got home (I live with a relative) they asked me what was wrong and I had explained the situation with that and I that I felt like I was being productive and trying my hardest. They had brought up the idea that my productivity level might be the issue and when I asked further I was met with one of the more gut-wrenching comments I have ever had anyone say about me. They told me that I act entitled. I have been called many things but for be being called entitled, one of the very things I have tried so hard not to be, it completely broke me inside. I have entered a few inserts below about my "Being Entitled" search.

They still never apologized and I truly don't think that they will. I've been dwelling on their comment about me being entitled everyday. And everyday it makes me more and more anxious, I've noticed myself being more secluded to avoid stepping on anyones toes. I think what I am looking for here is opinions that aren't mine or theirs. I know that was a lot to read but if you did I would appreciate some feedback. Do I seem entitled? Do I deserve an apology? How do I deal with something like this because I am completely lost.

I am an 18 year old online college student and I've always had a bit of trouble making friends and being able to keep them. My anxious tendency's make it hard for me to fully understand why someone would truly want to be my friend. I'm in therapy trying to work this my issues and trying to find better ways of communication. While I've only been in therapy for a short while I, personally, feel like made a ton of progress. I have contacted old friends and have made a couple new ones. I wouldn't go as far to say that I don't struggle with responding but I eventually will.
A big part of my anxiety is that I might take up "too much space", that my behavior would be "too much", that I would be annoying, and ultimately that people would hate be and I'd be lonely. My anxiety sometimes blinds me and I can't tell who I can and can't trust. I see the word alone being used a lot when people use it to describe how they feel but I don't feel alone. The word alone in the dictionary reads "having no one present" and the work lonely in the dictionary reads "without companions; solitary; cut off from others". I believe that the word lonely fits the description of my feeling better than alone. I know that I enjoy my alone time - my space - but for a long time I couldn't tell the difference between the two.
The first time I ever really felt my anxiety was in middle school. My younger self was much more open and optimistic than I am now. I still had that child-like wonder and sense of safety; like nothing could ever go wrong. I wish that feeling never left. As it is for most people, middle school was horrible. I remember being eccentric, happy, and very talkative. This was a direct hit for those "mean girl clicks" everyone had encountered in middle school. At that time I never really understand how cruel the world could truly be. This was the moment I truly felt the anxiety click in, hearing people talk behind your back then be so loving and caring to your face.I won't say that I am a saint because I know that I have also had rude conversations behind peoples backs and I can say nothing eats me alive more then knowing how rude I was. I know that it is almost impossible to get people to not talk about you behind your back, it happens to everyone but this never stopped me from trying.
Those "mean girl clicks" used to talk about how I'm too loud, annoying, they hated my hair, the way I dressed, etc. And I can positively say this went on with me though my entire life. I started dressing in all black, I would speak unless spoken to, I would keep my opinion to myself unless cued otherwise; I did all of this and more just to try and keep the attention off of me. I would keep a book with me at all times so I didn't disrupt anyone so that wouldn't be annoying. I was so fearful of seeing self-centered, being too much to handle, annoying, egotistical, and entitled to how much damage I was doing to my self worth in the long run. I wanted to so anything to avoid being those words because I thought that it would earn me friends; I thought that it would finally make me worthy.
All of this is to say that this was of living followed me though my life. Anytime someone needed something I was the first to volunteer, I wanted to help everyone in every way I could, I wanted to be a natural friend of people. A neutral friend - someone who was like enough to keep around but not noticeable enough to be talked about behind their back. I did this with everyone I met at school, work, family, etc. With this my therapist has helped me open up more and I've gotten more comfortable with myself and the fact that it's okay for me to take up space. However, I am still very aware of how I am acting and how I might be perceived. I think three times about what I am going to say before I say it to make sure I don't say anything that can hurt someone. Does it still accidentally happen, yes, but I am always empathic about it and I always apologize.

I've ran out of all but one of my safe foods, and I'm about to go off the last one because something about the texture just isn't right lately. I have about one small thing to eat a day, and I know it's not enough but I'm just not able to est anything else. What's worse is that summer is here. Flies are literally everywhere. I cannot eat as it is right now nevermind with worrying about having a fly land on my food and being unable to eat it. I'm practically living on a liquid diet with occasionally having one small bit of food every other day. If I go off this food and don't find anything to replace it I'm going to be forced to the hospital because my parents were told to take me after a week of not eating. I'm so scared, I don't want to go to the hospital at all and with mock exams coming up I'm just so stressed. I'm also in pain constantly, my stomach is just hurting me so much right now. I'm so overwhelmed, I was doing great literally last month being able to eat 3 separate things and now it's just all fell apart and I'm unable to sleep thinking about it. I hate this. I can't deal with ARFID, nobody cares, nobody understands, nothing is helping me and all I want to do is enjoy a hot, filling meal for the first time in years but no, I'm stuck living off fizzy drinks because I can't deal with milk and for some reason my body hates water. It's so shitty being me.

Burner for privacy. I have anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, and depression. I’ve been on meds for over 20 years, usually SSRIs.
Every five to ten years the meds stop working and I have to work with a psychiatrist to find a new solution – but we’re always able find something that works.
A few years ago, I needed the reboot on my meds and, for the first time ever, a benzo was added to my daily SSRI. We went through a few before we landed on one that didn’t have any sedating effects on me – I ended up with a daily SSRI combined with 1mg of clonazepam 2x daily, and that’s what I’ve been on for years.
I don’t drink (ever, not even an occasional beer or cocktail) and other than occasional weed (very occasional – unless I’m in a really good place mentally, I just end up having a panic attack) I’ve never done a “drug” in my life. (I’m not judging anyone who has used benzos – or any other drug – recreationally; I’m only sharing because it provides context for my specific situation.)
My use of clonazepam is purely therapeutic and even in the beginning, I never felt anything that seemed like “hey, I get why people use this recreationally!” There was no “high” for me – just slowly my panic attacks and other symptoms started to subside, similar to the gradual improvement that an SSRI provides.
At this point, I know that it’s unlikely that the clonazepam is even doing anything for me – I know tolerance builds up quickly and my dose has never increased, so this is probably just a maintenance dose that I’m taking.
I recently moved and along with that move came a new psychiatrist. The new psychiatrist wants me off of the clonazepam, primarily because of the increased risk of early onset dementia (which I also looked into and it seems like the research isn’t conclusive and this might be a correlation doesn’t equal causation thing).
Despite that, I’m not opposed to removing clonazepam from my medication, especially since I know that it’s probably not even doing anything at this point, considering tolerance etc…
My psychiatrist wants to move me from clonazepam to diazepam (Valium) and begin a low and slow taper of at least nine months. I was looking into this and it sounds like his plan is to use the Ashton Manual, although he never said as much.
I’m diligent with my meds – I have a pill box I fill up weekly and I rarely miss a dose, but on the off chance that I do miss a dose, I’ve never had a “craving” for clonazepam or a feeling of mental addiction – I usually notice a missed dose only after more than 48 hours has passed and it’s usually a headache that acts as my reminder. But, again, there’s no desire – it’s just like “what the hell is with this headache?… oh, crap, I forgot to take my meds the last couple of days.”
I know, logically, that my body is physically addicted to the meds but from an emotional standpoint, if someone said “I’m throwing the clonazepam away and you can never have it again!” my reaction would mostly be… 🤷♂️
…until I started looking into what the discontinuation process would be like!
At first, my primary concern was moving to diazepam because I didn’t want to feel groggy or sedated.
Now that I made the mistake of Googling this, I’m terrified that I’m going to have hallucinations, experience horrible body pains, go into a deep depression, have constant panic attacks, and maybe even have grand mal seizures – and that it could last for years even after the taper is done and the last pill has been taken?! WTF?!?!
Most of the info I’ve been able to find is from people who were using benzodiazepines recreationally (and at potentially far higher doses than me) and went cold turkey or did a fast (like one month) taper in rehab.
My dose (1mg 2x daily) isn’t “low” but it’s an average therapeutic dose. My taper is going to be long – at least nine months.
Is there anyone here that can speak to a very long, very slow, very gradual, medically-supervised taper and discontinuation? Is it possible to do this safely and with minimal side effects? (If it makes a difference, I’m more concerned about mental side effects than physical.)
If you have a success story or a good story, I’d love to hear it – especially if you’re comfortable providing details like what benzo it was, how many years you were on it, what dose you were on, and what your taper schedule was like.
If you have a horror story, no need to share – the internet is already full of those! I’m looking for some reassurance, not more panic attack fuel.

So for a long time I have been wanting to bring awareness to this house for a long time and today is the day I tell everyone about the house above hell.
So there is a house here in Alabama that I believe is the worst home to own here due to the violent activity that takes place there, but as you're expecting I was one of the unlucky people to experience this. It hasn't been only me that has been through the paranormal activity from this house but the others that have lived in the home have been affected by the spirits that inhabit the home.
I have three stories from me, my brother, and my mother. We have all lived in this home before and have since left, but the memories that the spirits have given us have never left us. These will go in the order that I showed earlier, and these stories are our most violent or out most active experiences with the many spirits that inhabit the home. I will not call the spirits by name as I do not know their names but I will also do it to respect them, as though the name I gave the house is very accurate, they are not all bad. These stories will have a sort of theme to them as the spirits seem to like the top floor of the house more than the bottom floor, but the bottom floor was also where the most violent spirits were so I understand why most would stay clear of them, but for you who want a story for the spirits downstairs don't worry because my brother had an encounter with one I'm sure you'll all love to hear
Story 1. Tall man
It was late at night and I just finished cleaning up in the restroom. I was sleeping in the first bedroom closest to the stairs, and I was closest to the only restroom upstairs so it was convenient for someone like me who's bladder is active at night. I turn to my door and turn the nob but it didn't open, which was strange because the door didn't lock there was only a small old timey key hole that if you looked through you'd be able to see into the room. Naturally I looked through the key hole to see what was blocking the door, but I didn't see anything just the room and nothing in front of the door. I push on the door and it opens and I immediately freeze, I'm overwhelmed with emotions as I stare into the corner next to the closet. Standing there is a man, dressed in all black and lacking a face just a black void. As I stare at him I start to cry and my knees shake as the start to become weak and when I blink he's gone and I fall to my knees crying. The emotions were the most I experienced in my entire life and to this day I wonder why I was filled with such grief, who he was, and why he showed himself to me in such a way.
Story 2. Little boy in the vent
My brother slept in the second furthest room and it was one of the smallest in the house. This room has small vents close to the door that haven't worked since the home was owned by my aunt. One night my brother was awakened by sounds of knocking and whispering coming from the vents, which went on for a couple minutes before he saw a pair of eyes staring at him from the vent. He described a feeling of understanding and felt bad before it disappeared and he soon went to sleep. This happened for multiple nights before we moved out.
Story 3. The woman of the house
This spirit is one of the more violent spirits and while this story doesn't show it, you shouldn't EVER approach her without permission as it is disrespectful and my brother learned why but this isn't that story that is the next one. This story happened in the master bedroom of the house, and happened to my mother. It was late at night and we have just moved in and my mother just woke up from hearing a noise. When she opened her eyes she saw a lady in a dress and the bed felt like it was covered in water, she was too afraid to move and it took what felt like an hour for the spirit to disappear and the feeling to fade. When we asked my aunt about this spirit she said that she was happy to have some new company.
Bonus story. making her mad
This happened a few years ago when my aunt still lived in the home. This is the time we made the woman of the house mad. My brother was playing on the Xbox 360 in the living room that we hooked up when we moved in, and while he was playing he looked over and saw a figure. Thinking it was our mother he walked towards it he looked up and saw her, backing away he curled up in a ball and started crying feeling like he was being crushed he started to scream for our aunt. When me and her got down there she was gone and he was left there shaking and crying. Other times we have made her mad have left us with scratch marks and bruises, as well as having trouble sleeping and nightmares but I'm unsure if the nightmares are because of her or not.
I'm unsure if anyone owns the house at the moment but all I know is that once you visit the house above hell, and you're not a fan of the paranormal, you'll never want to return. But if the home isn't occupied and the time and you get permission from the past owner or whoever is selling it at the moment then feel free to visit it.

I came out as a lesbian at 16 and started to take on more of a masculine appearance, and in turn, my self confidence became a lot stronger, but it also definitely alienated me from my family. They're not super homophobic by any means, but they're definitely uncomfortable with the idea of be being gay, especially because I'm the only girl. Through those last few years of high school, despite wearing masculine clothes and getting and undercut in my hair, I still kept my super long hair. My parents didn't love this new look, but never tried to stop me.

I was standing outside burger King and fidgeting. It was too crowded but I really needed a chocolate sundae. I did wait a good 10 minutes after which I frustratingly turned and matched towards the opposite direction towards an icecream parlour. ( They don't sell quality icecreams but what could I do) I took a soft serve cone, sat down on stairs and opened my first tarot book. It had almost read 80 percent of the book by then. I turned my head and I saw this girl who sat on the same stair but on the opposite end. She took out her mobile from her bag and I yelled "OMG". For a few seconds, we literally stared each other's face. Then I broke the ice. "I saw the magician's card on your phone wallpaper". She noticed the cover of my book - " yeah and that's a star" ( I didn't notice the star card on my book cover before because I hadn't read about major arcanas by that time). She told me that she is a tarot card reader. She has been reading for a year as a side hustle and has taken 3 courses to learn. I think she also said something about the courses being more helpful than reading books. After 10 min of our chatting, she left. When she was walking away, she looked back at me, smiled and said "Maybe it's a sign". I said "awww" nervously and waved goodbye. I can't forget her eyes. But I really don't know what was all this about? Anyways, I finished the book I was reading and bought my first taort deck ( The Light seers tarot ) along with Angels and Ancestors oracle cards. Today I am taking them to temple to get them blessed.

- D ends up with H before the battle at hogwarts. I remember Narcissa being with them when they basically handed draco over. I think they stay at grimmauld place in the beginning but they get separated (I might be confusing it for another fic). The most important detail is that D and H end up in a cottage owned by narcissa and followed by Voldy’s henchmen but the deatheaters can’t see the cottage so D and H are safe. I might have gotten the timing wrong and it might have been set right after the battle of hogwarts (I’m still not sure on this sorry) There’s also no graphic sex from what i remember. They are sneaking away to hook up and have a lot of hate sex and bond over their taste in music. I specifically remember them having sex to Kashmir by Led Zeppelin and Deftones. Towards the end they start to realize they have feelings for each other.

- Looking for a fic I read some years ago in german, but I am pretty sure it was translated from english. It is about Draco helping Harry and his friends escape from Malfoy Manor in the seventh book and being captured by the Death Eaters. He gets thrown into a cell without any sensory stimulation, but gets rescued after the war. The fic deals with the consequences of that, I am not quite sure if he is at St. Mungos for some time, but he definitely gets close to Harry in his healing process. Sorry if this is too vague or if it turns out that the fic was originally in german.

So I just finally finished LF a few days ago (after rotting on the library waitlist for months!), and I was really pleasantly surprised by the way Tanaka was written. Now part of that is just that I'm a big sucker - as both a reader and a writer - for taking apart characters who are irredeemable bastards and seeing what makes them tick. I was really curious to see other fans' takes on her, and it looks like she was pretty polarizing as a POV characters - some of you guys, like me, really loved to hate her, and some of you just plain hated her (and that's fine - some people prefer being able to like their POV characters. I'm not one of those people, though, haha). However, I haven't seen anyone really say much about the significance of her interest in (love of, really) art and art history. So I wanna talk a little about that.
The takes I've seen have largely come down to either, "It didn't fit with her character and felt really random," which I'm about to disagree with HARD, or "It served as a device to show that there was more to her that meets the eye, and that she could have gone down a completely different path." This one, I agree with, but I also think there's a lot more to it.
(1) So let's talk about why art history specifically. Why not something else seemingly 180 degrees away from being a Marine, like gardening or culinary science? As an artist who takes myself unapologetically seriously, I have had a lot of conversations with an artist friend of mine lately about the intimacy of art. Art is both an expression of individuality and a vehicle of profound, often terrifying, connection. The former is what Tanaka regards as the core of her being, while the latter is anathema to her. She is drawn to art precisely because it exists in a space of tension between her comfort zone and her deepest fears. It is the razor edge that she loves to walk.
I've said before that I think of art as a form of telepathy - you are trying to capture something inside your own mind and externalize it in a way that it is transmitted into the mind of another person. When Tanaka begins experiencing this very literally in a manner she can't control, it's her worst nightmare. But she loves art because it is a version of this that he can control. It's an outlet for her to fulfill the fundamentally human need for connection when it's never been safe (both literally and psychologically) for her to do so through any other means. She learned that as a child when she sought a hug and got a slap in the face instead.
A number of the art pieces she contemplates are emotionally intense. The Third Miko in particularly is memorable because it is a heavy piece, full of vulnerability and grief and dread. These are the kinds of pieces that not only did the artist have to rip themselves open and pour their soul into in order to produce, but the audience is required to do the same to some extent in order to fully experience them. Turning soul-crushing sadness into usable rage isn't alchemy - it's more like a refinement process; it takes a lot of energy, and there is a lot of waste runoff that still has to go somewhere. For Tanaka, that's where it goes. That's the safe place to put it. Inside of someone else's pain, where no one will ever know it's yours.
(2) The other thing I wanted to talk about hinges on a "blink and you miss it" detail that, for me at least, completely reframed the whole picture regarding the "two roads diverged" aspect of Tanaka's life, and that's the casually dropped revelation that she never actually had a choice in the first place. The way this was written, I'm absolutely certain it was a very deliberate choice by JSAC to undermine the assumptions we as readers had been previously led to make.
The "two roads" framing comes up explicitly three times in the book. The first time is in Chapter 24: "Tanaka hadn’t thought about that painting in decades, or about what a very different life she would have lived if she’d made a few different decisions at the start." The next mention is in Chapter 31, when Dr. Ahmadi is reviewing Tanaka's file. She says, "You refused an advanced scholarship in order to enlist." Both of these references frame it very explicitly as a choice. But then, a few pages later, it's revealed that it actually wasn't: "If Aunt Akari had let her study art history instead of enlisting in active service, where would she be right now? And who would be tracking down the high consul? What else—how many thousands of other things—would be different?" (emphasis mine).
This detail and the way it was just slipped in there actually made me feel terribly sad for her because it reveals that this was actually never where she wanted to be at all. This is more a matter of interpretation, but my takeaway was that the whole thing about her preferring a repressive society might be less the truth and more of a narrative she tells herself because she has spent her entire life deprived of any kind of real agency. It's true that someone who has never experienced life outside a pressure cooker environment might experience a sort of psychological rapid decompression upon leaving that kind of environment (I'm reminded of the memoir The Girl With Seven Names, where the author's mother and brother can't adapt to life outside of North Korea and want to go back), but that's less about being naturally well-suited to it and more about being deeply and maybe irreversibly maladapted.
When Tanaka tells herself she loves life under the boot because it gives her something to push back against, she's making the best of a bad situation by pretending her lack of agency is actually just a really sophisticated form of agency. It's the same mentality that makes abuse victims blame themselves - because, in some ways, the version of events where you were totally helpless and at the mercy of others is more distressing than the version where you brought it upon yourself through your own choices and actions. Wanting (and presumably asking her aunt's permission) to study art history, only to be forced to enlist in the marines instead is just another variation of her reaching for a hug and getting a slap. It also made me wonder what was meant earlier by "if she’d made a few different decisions at the start." What does she tell herself she could have done differently to change a fate that was never in her hands to begin with?
TL;DR Tanaka loves art because it's the only way she can safely experience human connection, and it's implied she actually would have chosen to study art history if her aunt hadn't forced her to enlist.

I had my first psychosis at age 17. Since then I have been to the psych ward 10+ times and rehab 3 times. I’m 24 now. Every delusion I was able to conquer and rise up from, but for the past two years, there has been a dilemma that comes in painful waves, and that dilemma is mind reading. I have to stop myself from thinking about it when it first starts up in my brain or else it will get ugly real quick. To explain what happens when I am like this, my entire reality, my entire livelihood all my experiences all my memories, they become irrelevant and everything is at stake. It all vanishes and it’s like my body is hanging on a thread. The fear is immense and crippling. I mean to think you’re not safe in your own thoughts, it’s insanity. I am a guy and not afraid to say this has made me cry many many times. It just never seems to go away. I try and use logic as much as I can, like “How is poker a thing if we can read minds”, or, to try and justify, I’ll stare at some random stranger and in my head I’m screaming “Look at me! look at me!” But they never do…
I’m not boasting here but let me just say, I truly have an amazing life and nothing to complain about. I am confident I will find a girl as I like to think I am pretty confident and attractive, and I also graduated from CU Boulder University and have a near six figure income. I take life seriously, and my lows prevented me from sitting on my butt. There was just too much pain in the way, the pain of being a nothing in life, that drove me to be highly successful. I haven’t been to the psych ward in 2 years. With that being said, I don’t really get bad lows anymore. If it’s a low nowadays, it’s from this dilemma.
Moral of the story I reread many bipolar info pages and what really hit me was many of them explained how we, as bipolar patients, ignore all logic when it comes to delusions. And you know what? That really helped me. It really hit home. It happened again earlier today, the dilemma. I thought about getting a therapist today as I felt I had to tell someone, but I guess I’ll just type this here, and title it “Off My Chest”. Thanks for reading I was just tired of holding this in for so long. I felt like I needed to tell someone. Couldn’t tell my friends without tainting the relationship. Couldn’t tell my parents without them calling the psych ward police on me. Just very alone dealing with this alone. And for something so stupid like “mind reading”.

I am confident I will find a girl as I like to think I am pretty confident and attractive, and I also graduated from CU Boulder University and have a near six figure income. I take life seriously, and my lows prevented me from sitting on my butt. There was just too much pain in the way, the pain of being a nothing in life, that drove me to be highly successful. I haven’t been to the psych ward in 2 years. With that being said, I don’t really get bad lows anymore. If it’s a low nowadays, it’s from this dilemma.

He has a really difficult job for something being in a small town. It involves long hours, always a possibility that he may get called in too. I understand that and I respect him for handling it the way he does, he seems to really be good at it. However, multiple people from his job got laid off, which is difficult when the area he works in is already so limited with what he does. This led to him taking on more hours and me seeing less of him, which again I understand. We talk every single day over text, he sends me good morning texts every day without fail.
However, I haven’t seen him in person in two months. This is a big deal for me because quality time together is a love language of mine. I enjoy being around him, even if it’s me coming over just to sleep with him and his dogs. I noticed recently that his snapchats were of him with friends, him going places and doing things but figured that since they lived in that town, it must be easier for him to just see them in person than is for me, who lives about thirty minutes away from ANY town period.
Recently he had an issue with his ex (I don’t want to put his issues out here on the off chance that he sees this and also it’s not my business to share.) and I just kept quiet but it all came to ahead when I was dragged by my mom to my cousin’s house. I didn’t want to go mainly because it was a bible study group and I myself am not religious and ultimately found it a waste of time but saw it as quality time with my mom so I went.
I watched my cousin show up to this bible study for his wife even though he was four hours away for work, even though he had to go right back in the morning just so he could spend time with his wife and I guess I reached a breaking point. I kept wondering why I wasn’t worth the effort for him. Why I seemed to not be able to spend time with him but everyone else could. I originally gave the excuse to my mind that it was more convenient for him to just stay where he is but then, why wouldn’t he just invite me to hang out with him and his friends? I understand that people need space, I do. But TWO MONTHS. Of not seeing each other?
I just cracked and asked him if I did something to potentially upset him, if I did anything to offend him and that’s why we hadn’t seen each other. He was honest and told me what was going on at work and I again, understood. I figured that I was in my own head, that I was always insecure and maybe that it was just that bubbling to the surface. I even thanked him for his patience for dealing with my anxiety.
Which seems to be where this all started. His answer to me sending a thank you message for dealing with me was “it’s fine until I snap.” Which I thought was a joke at first because we had been joking around a few messages earlier but then I started noticing his messages after I asked seemed passive aggressive.
I honestly just sat there feeling this vicious cycle of anger at myself for bringing this up when I knew he was going through something but also anger at him because I have been so patient and understanding until now. Okay so I saw the doctor a few weeks back about my constant stomach pain. I'm constantly in discomfort either with n* every day to constipation or not going weeks without some sort of cramping, and the doctor diagnosed me with IBS caused by anxiety. He told me that he can't really do anything about that but give me anti-nausea medicine, anti-gas medicine and laxatives. He said best thing for me would probably be therapy, but the thing is I honest to God don't think that's it.
My emetophobia is really not bad. It used to be so much worse, but recovery is not really that easy with constant stomach pain. For context, I'm 26 but still live at home. Not by choice. My circumstances do not allow me to move out on my own. Pay isn't good enough, nobody to split the rent with, high cost of living in my country, etc....
My mother has been drinking every single night since some point in the year 2000, before I was old enough to remember. A few months ago, her doctor gave her bad news about her health, and that if she continues to exceed one drink a day, she will most likely die.
She took that news seriously at first. She stayed off alcohol for a few weeks, only having a cheat night here and there which was fine, but she has relapsed. Now she is drinking as soon as she gets out of bed, and not stopping until she blacks out.
She even came to me for help to stop, and I gave her the best advice I could, and she ignored it. I told her to talk to an addiction counsellor, maybe even go to rehab et cetera, but nothing came from this conversation. Of course she was drunk when we had it, so no surprise.
I'm not great with booze either. I have more than my fair share and I am actively trying to fight the habit. But my mother uses this as a reason to rely on me when she's all out. I had roughly, 30-40 beers in the fridge just last night (I only have one to three a night. Rest is just cheap wine) and this morning I found myself with only ten. (And later, when I confronted her about it, she went on to take two more.)
So I tried calling her and she didn't answer. I texted asking how many she had, even though I knew the answer, and she didn't reply. When she came home (Blind drunk) I asked again, how many did she have and she drunkenly said "Don't worry about it" and I said that I am worried about it because I have always replaced anything of hers that I have, but she deflected, saying that she and her husband were fighting.
I admit, I was losing my patience at this point because she was not listening to me or taking me serious and I got worked up. Not because I was upset over beer, although it is expensive here. I was upset over the principle of it all, in addition to worrying about her declining health. As I said, I have always replaced anything that I take. I even tell her before she finds out by herself. And then once I returned to my room, her husband stomped over to the door and punched it, and yelled something I could not make out.
So when I looked in the fridge earlier and saw I had ten beers left, I was mad. Again, not because I didn't have so much beer to drink, but because she took it without asking, tried to hide it from me and then later, wouldn't even talk to me about it. And of course, also because she is drinking herself to death at this point. I was angry because her doctor gave her fair warning the damage she is doing to her body and I have tried to help but she does not listen. Not only that, if I take something of hers, I have to replace it otherwise there will be hell to pay, but she can take from me and I can't even ask about it.

Dad of 3 little hooligans here. My oldest (4yo) is likely somewhere on the Autism spectrum. I say likely because our pediatrician recommended delaying testing because he was born at the end of 2019 right before the chaos of covid, and the lockdowns caused a LOT of developmental delays in kids born around the start of 2020, leading to a huge spike in ASD diagnoses and likely false positive results. But he is likely autistic, or at the very least severely adhd (like his mom and myself and his grandpa. Kid gets it honest lol). Now that the set up is done…
4yo is in basketball at our local YMCA. His coaches are a married couple, dad used to play college ball and he has 3-4 kids, 2 of which are also on the team. They’ve been pretty good! They seem to manage the kiddos well for the most part. That said, the last 2 weeks have been hard on our kid. Last week they split the team in 2 and did the same 2 drills for like an hour. About 20 mins in, my kid was just done. He was bored and starting to lose what little focus he had. When the wife of the main coach scolded him, he was done. Cried, wouldn’t go back in, blah blah blah, so early end. All week he’s been asking to go play basketball. Today we go back, and he’s suuuuuuper excited again and ready to go. He’s participating fine (mind you he’s a distracted mess, and needs redirected more often than the other kids, but doing his best to hang with the team’s overall chaotic structure.) Halfway he gets water, says he’s having fun. Second half of the practice and they start doing this weird drill where they just told the kids “spread out a little” in the paint and would take turns pulling one kid to the top to dribble down and then tell them to pass to another kid. Obviously none of the kids had a clue what was going on and it was slow going. My kid started visibly struggling with being bored and unsure what he was supposed to be doing. He would be redirected to “stand here” and would try, but get distracted again. He would kind of play defense and run with the ball handler to try and have something to do. At one point I saw him tell the coach “I wanna play basketball”. He got a turn and was happy. But after, being distracted and bored, he sat down on the court. I tried to subtly point for him to stand up, but he wasn’t seeing me. Finally the coach picked him up under the arms and sat him on his feet and patted his back telling him to “stand there”. Not out of line at all, but in the chaos he was clearly annoyed a bit. My kid is perceptive and does not handle people being upset with him well….so he thought he was in trouble. He started pouting a bit and crying, and after they tried to get him the ball and his not wanting to, he ran over to me and mom. We did our best to talk him into going back, but to no avail.
So far not a big deal, but what makes me super angry is after practice and the kids start getting with their parents and leaving, I had calmed my kid down and was trying to give him a dad pep talk. I fully expected coach to drop over and do what I would expect him to do: say hi to him, ask if he was okay, maybe give him a high five and try to encourage him a bit. NOPE. The coaches talked to a couple of the other kids and parents and just gathered their kiddos and left. Not so much as a glance to us. I’m still angry about it. It makes me feel rejected on behalf of my son. Like I get that it can be hard and my kid is a little hard to keep focused, but he’s still a 4 year old boy who just wants to have fun, who felt strongly that the coach was mad at him, and frankly I think so too. Makes me sick to my stomach.
TLDR: if you don’t like little kids or are not able to channel dad-first energy……do NOT coach tiny kid sports. No wan wants a douche who looks down on kids who just want to be included and have fun
