2013.07.19 08:46 Whales_Vagina23 ESL Teachers

A subreddit for teachers of ESL working in their home countries/English speaking countries. Working in an English speaking country with non-native speakers is a whole different experience than working and teaching abroad. The goal here is for discussion of that experience along with lesson ideas and exchange. Also welcomed are the occasional rants and raves, material sharing, and discussions.

2024.05.21 16:04 Acceptable-Mountain ESL Theatre?

Hello, I teach in the US at a school with a large ESL population (many different languages, the main ones are Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, and French). I am the theatre teacher here, and get a wide variety of English speakers in my classes since they're open to everyone (and rightly so). I teach acting, improv, theatre tech, and theatre history and while we do well with mime and physical improv (and simple word association games) I'm having trouble differentiating other lessons in such a way that they're accessible without reducing the content. I'm discouraged from using Google Translate/offering materials in my students' native languages (would be really hard to do considering all of the different Arabic dialects, not to mention kids who aren't literate in their first language, or speak a combination of languages they learned growing up in refugee camps). So yeah, what would you do?

2024.05.21 12:34 jaygetslost Experienced Teacher, Weighing Best Options for Teaching License Upgrade

Hi there! TLDR, Canadian with a four year non-teaching BA and around 7 years teaching experience in Asia. I've scoured Reddit for answers and advice, and I'm still very much at odds with the best way forward.
The goal is to improve my employment opportunities and be more competitive going forward in the international school sphere as quickly as possible. I don't plan on teaching in Canada, the US, or the UK at any point. While satisfying various visa requirements is good (and necessary), I would also like to upgrade my eligibility for "higher quality" schools in Asia and elsewhere. I am presently employed at an international curriculum (IGCSE) school in China doing grade 9-10 ESL. Please note I plan on doing an MA next year regardless of the teaching license question, likely in something like "International Adult Education" or some such.
I see two main options. One, doing a full iQTS with PGCE program from September this year. This route gets me a legitimate, well-regarded teaching license and a ton of instructional content for becoming a better teacher. The downside: several universities do not offer the iQTS with the PGCE from September (ie, only the iQTS), and the ones that do seem to require placements at two separate schools and/or across multiple grades (ie, grade 10 and grade 6). In short, it's possibly the most effective option, but it could be very difficult to actually fulfill the requirements of the program. AOR could be an option, but I fear it would be a huge amount of work to retrofit my past lessons plans etc into the AORs portfolio requirements.
Two, a US license with American Board, MTEL, or (unlikely) Moreland. Yes, Moreland seems like the most tried and true route on this, but American Board is a fraction of the time and cost (ie, all of 2-3 months of $1500 USD) and even MTEL seems like it could satisfy most teaching license hiring/visa requirements. Taking this path, I would knock out an American Board and then probably start an MA much sooner. The hesitation here is that an American Board or MTEL would not in fact be adequate for visa requirements, upgrading, etc.
Lastly, you might be wondering why I don't do a Canadian BEd. TLDR, doing one on the ground just isn't feasible at the moment, unless anyone has heard of a fully remote option that's opened up.
So, do you think it's a better route to do a PGCE with iQTS (or even the iQTS alone), do a quick American Board or MTEL, or just do a regular Moreland? Thanks a ton in advance for any feedback!

Help: what should I do with this comb?
Hi! This is my first year as a beekeeper and, as you can see, I clearly underestimated how quickly I would have to add new frames in. I live in Italy, and we have had bad weather for a while. I thought my colony was barely getting by (I did feed them sugar syrup hoping to help), but apparently they have been busy building new comb themselves. I have frames I can add, but i need help dealing with the comb they have already made. It looks like it's as big as a regular frame. What should I do? I have looked at some older posts and my understanding is that the best thing to do is to take it out. Can you give me some tips on how to do it effectively? For example, let's imagine the comb stays safely attached to the top like shown in the picture and I'm able to lift it and move it away from the hive, how do I convince all the bees to move away from it? Would smoking them be enough? While inspecting the frames I'm never able to move all the bees away like it's shown in some of your pictures, where the frames are completely empty. I've definitely learnt my lesson and will give them new frames more often, but if you have any suggestions on what I should do tomorrow morning to solve this mess I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

2024.05.21 10:50 LilxKirby999 Stuck between Kawasaki ninja 400 or Z 400 as a beginner bike.

Hey everyone ! Atm I’m learning for my theory and will start lessons after that. I’ve been looking around for a while, checked video’s on youtube for info’s etc. ( I’m a total newbie and have no friends or family that are into motorbikes so I hope you can help me out a bit )
My eyes definitely fell on these two bikes but I’m kinda stuck. I know they are almost the same bikes except some smaller details.
I’ve heard that the ninja is less “comfortable” than a Z for longer rides ( ergonomics ) and the Z on highways can get a bit “rowdy” because of the higher speeds.
Will put some extra info:
I’m a smaller girl 1m63 and will use the motor bike for going to work. (30min rides). I live in Belgium where the weather is mostly rainy except in the summer so I was curious if this is a bad idea for getting a naked ?
In the weekends and free time I would love to go ride longer distances (1h-2h)to go to concerts, or just have a fun ride. ( So highway driving will also be a thing )
In the future I also wanna ride to other countries too. Talking about 3-4 maybe 6 hours max and back.
What do you guys think ? Also if you have extra tips for any must have bike accessoires feel welcome to drop !
Thanks a lot and have a nice day 🥰

2024.05.21 05:52 raider1211 I’d appreciate some feedback on my application essay

Basically the title. Please provide constructive criticisms and keep in mind that I’ve never written an application essay like this before. The essay is as follows:
I’d like to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer because I want to contribute to making a lasting, meaningful impact on the world. I’ve been struggling for quite awhile now in looking for a job post-graduation, and the biggest reason for that is most jobs I see available are those in which the only reward is a paycheck. I don’t want to just work a 9-5 as a cog in the wheel; rather, I want to feel like what I’m doing matters, and working as a Peace Corps volunteer to uplift the lives of everyone I’m serving would provide a sense of fulfillment and purpose which would be lacking in most other opportunities available to me. I’ve considered getting into teaching high school social studies for some time now because that would also provide me with a sense of fulfillment in teaching kids how to better engage with information and help them to succeed both in the classroom and beyond. The specific position I selected to apply to (teaching English to people in Ecuador) wouldn’t be quite the same as that, but it would allow me to help them broaden their horizons and chances for success through speaking a second language that is widely used throughout the world. I also would like to expand my own horizons by learning about other cultures and meeting new people so as to better myself as a person, and working for the Peace Corps would be a great way to do that. Regarding overcoming the various challenges I would face as a Peace Corps volunteer (of which I’m sure that there are many), I feel equipped to deal with many of them. The most obvious challenge to me is that I will be living in a culture largely different from my own with people that I don’t know, and as such, I can imagine experiencing culture shock. To deal with that, I will attempt to view the opportunity as a learning experience in which I can learn more about the people that I’m living with as well as share my own experiences with them in a symbiotic way. I will also attempt to engage in plenty of activities with the local people. For example, I grew up playing soccer from 6th grade to 12th grade and played for a couple of seasons in an intramural league at my university, and since the Peace Corps website states that the people of Ecuador enjoy soccer, I can try to bond with them over a shared love of soccer. In essence, I will look to bond over the things which makes us similar while trying to appreciate those things that make us different. Another challenge that comes to mind is adapting to a new climate which is very different from where I live. To deal with this, I will pack a variety of clothing to be prepared for a number of weather conditions and use the tools and information provided by the Peace Corps to ensure my health and safety. This also extends to things beyond the weather, such as disease, injury, crime, etc. As far as intellectual challenges go (perhaps pertaining to teaching English, preparing lessons, etc.), I feel confident in my ability to cater to the needs of those I’m working with, as I have experience tutoring children in math as well as a philosophy degree which has bettered my critical thinking skills and ability to engage with many ideas.

The Collect
Almighty and merciful God, in your goodness keep us, we pray, from all things that may hurt us, that we, being ready both in mind and body, may accomplish with free hearts those things which belong to your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever; Amen
Readings:
Psalm 5; 6 Proverbs 4
Gospel: Matthew 11:7–15
7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John,What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
9But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

Commentary:
We often find others, and sometimes ourselves, in a moment of religious fervor quoting a single verse or perhaps a passage, as a means of accentuating our editorial point or even justifying that point or opinion. When a verse is used appropriately, in that the contextual meaning of the verse actually is relevant to the theme we are seeking to emphasize, the usage stirs great emotion and sometimes introspection or encouragement. But when a verse is used out of context, the result is an opposite effect, causing confusion when the reader attempts to understand the writers intent or motivation.
Therefore, if we are going to use bible verses effectively, without sowing confusion and misunderstanding, we should attempt to learn all we can about the Bible, especially these individual scenes or vignettes we are presented with in bible studies such as the one today.
Quite frequently, the backgound of the Gospel account and the historical and cultural influences, are interesting, enlightening, and add a deeper understanding and appreciation of the lesson presented in the Gospel.
Regarding the setting or background of the passage we are studying today, we find John the Baptist—who had been arrested and imprisoned by Herod Antipas (see Mt. 4:12 and 14:1-12) hearing reports of the works of Christ—even while in prison—leading John to send two of his disciples to inquire of Jesus if he was indeed the Christ, the anointed one promised by the prophets. The one that the people were longing for with great expectations; a Messiah that would lead them out of subjugation by the Romans and restore the kingdom to its former glory as was under the reign of King David. (v. 11:2-3)
Donovan writes of this situation:
The reason behind John’s question is found in his messianic expectations. He called people to repent (3:2), because “Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire” (3:10). He warned that the one who was to come would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. “His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire” (3:12). John clearly expects a fire-and-brimstone messiah.”
Jesus has not lived up to that billing. He has pronounced blessings on the poor in spirit, the meek, and peacemakers (5:1-11). He has called his disciples to love their enemies (5:42-48). He has warned them not to judge others (7:1-5). These teachings seem weak by comparison with the actions anticipated by John’s fire and brimstone preaching.”
Furthermore, Jesus moved away from Jerusalem, the home of the temple and the center of religious authority, and began his ministry in Galilee (4:12).”
Then Jesus worked a series of healing ministries in chapters 8-9—what Bruner calls an “ambulance ministry”—of tremendous significance to those who were healed, but not significant to the nation as a whole. It has been centuries since Israel has heard a prophetic voice (other than John’s). People are looking for a voice of authority—for a fire that will purge the dross—for a powerful leader who will restore Israel’s former glory—for a messiah who will restore the people of God. John keeps watching Jesus hoping to see fireworks, but thus far has been disappointed.
But we must admire John. He has a problem with Jesus, so he approaches Jesus as directly as his imprisonment allows—no behind-the-back criticism! He sends his disciples to ask Jesus if he is the one or shall they look for another? John has doubts, but he seeks to learn what Jesus will say—is open to hearing Jesus say that he is, indeed, the one!
In verse 6, Jesus states, “And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” John did not take offense, but only expressed doubt. We can surmise, that John was questioning his own situation just as he was questioning that of Jesus. After all if he (John the Baptist) was truly the one sent by God to prepare the way for the Messiah, why is he in prison? Wouldn’t he better serve God by being out preaching the word of God? And if Jesus was the anointed one, why isn’t he calling down lightening strikes on the Romans, putting them on the run out of Judea? John, as great of a prophet as he was, is about to learn a great lesson in messiah-ship.
Jesus could rebuke John for his doubts, but instead offers him a blessing. Jesus has not lived up to John’s expectations, but John has not allowed that to be a stumbling block (skandelisthe). Soon enough, Jesus will deal with cities that refuse to repent (11:20-24)—hometown people who take offense (13:57)—Pharisees who take offense (12:1-8; 15:12) and conspire to kill Jesus (12:9-14) and charge that Jesus gets his power from Beelzebul (12:24)—and even disciples who desert him when the chips are down (26:31-33). John has done none of those things, but simply asks Jesus to confirm that he is the one for whom everyone has been waiting. Jesus offers the blessing, not just to John, but to all who do not take offense—all who do not stumble—all who are not scandalized. Jesus blesses us when we remain faithful in the face of prayers that seem not to be answered or hopes that go unfulfilled.” (Donovan)
Perhaps you now understand the importance of reviewing the nuances of the surrounding factors relative to a passage. Hopefully the brief summation provided helps you to understand why Jesus did not rebuke John, but in the verses suggested as today’s study, we find Jesus offering John praise.
And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John,What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?”(v. 7) John’s disciples had departed, returning to Herod’s prison to report what Jesus had said, and Jesus turns his attention to the followers who had gone out to hear John preach and now were intently listening to and watching Jesus.
Instead of teaching in the formal places of religious instruction, such as the temple in Jerusalem or the outlying synagogues, John had preached in the wilderness, rural areas free of distraction and creature comforts. It required effort upon the part of the people to make the arduous journey out there to hear him, but none the less they did, in great multitudes according to the Gospel writers.
Jesus—in a rhetorical manner—asks them, “What went ye out into the wilderness to see?” Naturally, no one—much less multitudes of people—would make such a great effort to venture out into the desert to hear someone preach who was unworthy. “ They who are weak as reeds will be shaken as reeds; but John was strong in spirit, Eph. 4:14. When the wind of popular applause on the one hand blew fresh and fair, when the storm of Herod's rage on the other hand grew fierce and blustering, John was still the same, the same in all weathers. The testimony he had borne to Christ was not the testimony of a reed, of a man who was of one mind to-day, and of another to-morrow; it was not a weather-cock testimony; no, his constancy in it is intimated (Jn. 1:20); he confessed and denied not, but confessed, and stood to it afterwards, Jn. 3:28. ” (Henry)
In essence, Jesus is stating “Let me tell you what kind of man John is!”
But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.” (vs. 8-10)
John was said to wear a rough cloak made from the hair of a camel, with a leather belt to gird it, eating wild honey and grains so as to avoid the comparison of those political and religious leaders who lavished upon themselves great luxury. “A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.” Is a direct condemnation of the weak and lascivious usurper who had inherited his father’s throne, Herod Antipas, who in an attempt to seduce his own step daughter granted her a wish, which resulted in her mother asking for John’s head on a platter.
Note, they who have lived a life of mortification, are least likely to be driven off from their religion by persecution. John appeared rough and unpleasant, yet they flocked after him.” (Henry)
A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.” Israel endured four hundred years without a prophet. When John burst onto the scene with his fiery preaching, the authenticity of his ministry generated enormous public appeal. “For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.” “John prepares the way of the one who is to come. People check roads before the king travels them. Servants repair potholes and scouts insure security. Today, executives have assistants who plan their travel, secretaries who make their reservations, chauffeurs who drive their cars, and pilots who fly their planes. Just as the services of those who prepare the way enhance the executive’s ability to accomplish work, so also John smoothed Jesus’ entry into the world by calling people to repentance.”(Donovan)
Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist:” (v. 11a) Jesus declares John to be, not just the greatest prophet, but the greatest figure ever. Given Israel’s pantheon of heroes, such as Abraham, Moses, and David, this is an astonishing statement, indeed. What makes John so special is not his personal characteristics, excellent though those might be, but his privileged place in salvation history. All the other heroes of the faith have done mighty works, but only John has the privilege of introducing the Messiah.
notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”(v. 11b) “ John stands at the pinnacle of the old era, but even the greatest representative of the old era is less than the humblest representative of the new. An appropriate metaphor is the ancient astronomer whose observations were limited by a small, primitive telescope. The most brilliant person, so limited, could never match the work of a more ordinary person with access to today’s space-based telescopes. Like Moses, John marched up to the border of the promise without actually entering it himself. He was Jesus’ forerunner—not his disciple. If the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John, consider where that places us. We may be very ordinary Christians, but God considers us to be great.” (Donovan)
And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” (vs. 12-15)
Jesus’ reference to violence refers to both the intensity of spiritual warfare surrounding the ministry of Jesus and His herald, and also to the intensity required to persevere in following God and His kingdom.
The exact sense of this has been greatly debated, and is made more difficult by complicated grammar. Carson probably gives the best sense of both expressions. “The kingdom has come with holy power and magnificent energy that has been pushing back the frontiers of darkness. This is especially manifest in Jesus’ miracles and ties in with Jesus’ response to the Baptist…The kingdom is making great strides; now is the time for courageous souls, forceful people, to take hold of it.” (Carson)
For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ” Jesus saw an era ending with John; all the prophets and the law anticipated John and his ministry as a herald. There is a sense in which John spoke for every prophet who heralded Jesus’ coming. Under the Old Covenant, every other prophet announced, “The Messiah is coming.” John alone had the privilege of saying, “The Messiah is here.”
The ministry of John was the beginning of the gospel, as it is reckoned, Mk. 1:1; Acts 1:22. This is shown here in two things: [1.] In John the Old Testament dispensation began to die, v. 13. So long that ministration continued in full force and virtue, but then it began to decline. Though the obligation of the law of Moses was not removed till Christ's death, yet the discoveries of the Old Testament began to be superseded by the more clear manifestation of the kingdom of heaven as at hand. [2.] In him the New-Testament day began to dawn; for (v. 14) This is Elias, that was for to come. John was as the loop that coupled the two Testaments; as Noah was Fibula utriusque mundi—the link connecting both worlds, so was he utriusque Testamenti—the link connecting both Testaments. The concluding prophecy of the Old Testament was, Behold, I will send you Elijah, Mal. 4:5, 6. Those words prophesied until John, and then, being turned into a history, they ceased to prophecy. ” (Henry)
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” “A proverbial form of speech often used by Jesus after important utterances, here for the first time in Matthew.” (Bruce) A saying of Jesus that will appear throughout the Gospels which is a veiled warning to all mankind, to listen, to take heed, to understand that the teachings of Christ are indeed the thoughts and commandments of his Father in Heaven, and an implication that to ignore these words will result in less than favorable circumstances.
Benediction
It is not enough to acclaim Jesus Christ as our Lord and King. Our mission in life is to make his kingdom a reality among us and to bring it to those around us by our words and deeds. The way to do this is to live as he lived: for others, in love and service. May almighty God bless you for this task: the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord and to give shape to his kingdom. Thanks be to God!

2024.05.21 02:39 bjpmbw Need some advice: job will expand to add middle school students

I work in a kindergarten through eighth grade school and it’s a pretty great place all around. It’s not quite a title one school but we do have our problems…but not severe. My job is a mixture of coaching newer teachers and small group teaching. So next year my job will expand to include middle school grades. This means I’ll be standing in front of middle school students from grades 6/7 /8. I’m honestly just a little nervous & I really don’t know how to approach this. I’m so used to elementary students, and I’m open to any tips. The teachers that I’ll be working with seem happy to have the extra help because they’re entering a pretty new ESL program situation. I’ve been pretty successful with grades K-5 in terms of getting good rapport with the kids etc. I have had other roles in education including classroom teacher and assistant principal, but I have never really worked with middle school students except for a small period with subbing. Did I mention I’m not exactly young, 56 years. I would love to hear any suggestions about starting off the right way when I go into classrooms to start modeling lessons etc. Besides running away, lol.

Training

After racing the Tokyo Marathon in early March, I had 8 weeks before racing Eugene Marathon, which was my second spring marathon. During those 8 weeks, I ran the NYC Half, the Cherry Blossom 5K and Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, and was either recovering from those races or doing my usual runs and workouts to keep my fitness sharp. The workouts and my race results during this time (finished in 1:19 high at the NYC Half on tired legs two weeks after Tokyo, and finished the Cherry Blossom 5K in mid-17s plus turned it around in less than 24 hours after to finish in the low 59 minutes range at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run) suggested that I was in shape to go for a sub-2:45 marathon.
Ultimately, I settled on aiming to finish Eugene somewhere between 2:41 and 2:44. Because this was my final marathon of the spring training cycle, this was my last opportunity to run a fast marathon. Based on my recent race results plus observations from my coach, I was in PR shape; Eugene has ideal weather, and the course was ideal to make such an attempt. Or so I hoped.

Pre-race

I flew over to Portland on Thursday night and spent a couple of nights at my friends’ place and got to hang out with them, plus walk around Portland and check out the sights with them as well. On Saturday, my friends and I drove over to Eugene and we went straight to packet pickup at a hotel around downtown Eugene. The packet pickup was quite smooth, and I was able to pick up my packet and spent some time browsing the vendors at the expo afterwards. The rest of the day was chill; my friends and I did a bit of exploring around downtown Eugene, and we had dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory that evening. Before heading to bed that night, I laid out my race kit and prepped my gear bag so that I could get dressed and head out to the shuttle pickup area as soon as I woke up that morning.
I woke up on 5 AM on race day, had a quick breakfast, got dressed and headed out of my hotel towards the designated shuttle pick up point. Got on the shuttle bus and we arrived at Hayward Field around 6:20 AM. I quickly took care of business in the bathroom, then went over and dropped my gear bag at the bag check area. I ran into a friend at the gear check area and we went inside Hayward Field so that we could take a look at the famous venue. We then made our way to the start area, and we did a quick warm up jog nearby before entering the start corrals themselves and lining up close to the start area. I took half of a Maurten 160 gel before starting, and I had plans to consume the remainder after the first six miles.
After the usual pre-race remarks and the singing of the National Anthem, the race started at 7 AM and we were on our way!

Race

Start to 5 miles

The course was a bit crowded at the beginning, primarily because the marathoners and half marathoners started at the same time. There was quite a bit of rolling hills during the first 5 miles and so I focused on getting into a groove and going by effort and doing what I could to try to not go out too fast. My bladder was feeling a bit full at the start and I ended up taking a quick pee break after mile 2 and lost 20 seconds in the process.
Otherwise, this stretch was uneventful. We went through some really nice neighborhoods within Eugene during the first two miles, and saw some scenic stretches along the way while heading south towards the first turnaround point. I crossed the 5 mile mark in 31:17

5 miles to 10 miles

As we headed back north towards the center of Eugene, we overlapped a bit with the marathoners and half marathoners coming through in the opposite towards the mile 3 marker. I held my efforts relatively steady on this stretch, and I still felt quite good so far. I took my first gel sometime mile 7, and I was fueling every 30-40 minutes or so throughout the race. After going through the mile 9 marker and running past Hayward Field and the start area (which had been taken down at this point), my stomach started to feel a bit weird and I realized I need to find a porta potty at the next aid station to take care of this, and soon. Fortunately, I did not have to wait too long; there was a porta potty half a mile ahead, and I went straight to it and took care of business there, losing about 20 seconds in the process.
Besides the untimely bathroom stop around mile 9.5, nothing else happened to me on this stretch. I went through the mile 10 checkpoint in 31:23 (1:02:40 elapsed)

10 miles to 15 miles

After passing the mile 10 marker, we went onto the bike path along the Willamette River, before easing back onto Franklin Boulevard. I saw signs telling half marathoners and marathoners that the half/full marathon split at mile 10.75 was coming up; seeing that, I mentally prepared myself to run a good portion of the races with not many runners around me. At mile 10.75, the half and full marathoners split off, and I headed east, crossing the river into Springfield and looped through there for a mile before heading west to continue the rest of my race. Most of this stretch was quite flat, and I got comfortable easing into my goal pace and ticked off the miles. I took another gel sometime after mile 12 and was hitting up almost every water stop along this stretch. After mile 14, we went onto the wooded bike paths, where we would spend most of the second half. The crowd support started to diminish, and this was going to set the tone for the rest of the race.
I went through the 15 mile checkpoint in 31:16 (1:33:56). The organizers did not set up an official halfway checkpoint but based on watch data and the paces from the 5 mile splits, it was likely that I came through the halfway point a few seconds under 1:22.

15 miles to 20 miles

Besides briefly crossing paths with the half marathoners after the mile 15 mark, things started to gradually get tough for me. I was mostly running by myself on the wooden bike paths, with few runners ahead of me or behind me. And the crowd support was sparse too, which did not help; I only saw small crowds every few miles or so. Pace wise, I was holding on, but I was starting to increasingly feel the fatigue and I began to negotiate with myself. Which isn’t what I needed at this point. I wasn’t feeling too great somewhere between the mile 19 and mile 20 markers, and I ended up taking a quick 10-15 second breather at the aid station to catch my breath, take a caffeinated gel and grab some hydration, and put myself back together before continuing.
I went through the mile 20 split with a 32:05 split (2:06:01 elapsed). With a 10K to go, it was going to get harder for me the rest of the way.

20 miles to Finish

What I do remember about the last 6.2 miles, unfortunately, was how hard this was for me. Admittedly, this felt much harder than the last 6.2 miles at the Tokyo Marathon. It was giving me a lot of deja vu, which was not what I needed. My legs felt very heavy and there were times where it felt like I had leg weights tethered to my legs. My legs did not have any life left in them either. I wasn’t feeling too great either, even after taking a quick stop a moment ago. Realizing my predicament, I decided to break the remaining distance up and focused on getting to the next mile marker(s) as a way to keep me motivated the rest of the way. One mile at a time. Then two miles at a time. As I was gradually fading the rest of the way, I remember at least 8-10 runners passing by me during this stretch and clearly they were having a better day than I was having. It didn’t feel great seeing that happen to me but there was nothing I could do about it. Crowd support continued to be sparse up until less than a mile out from the finish at Hayward Field. I took my final gel around mile 23 so that I had enough left in the tank to take me the rest of the way.
It felt like forever, but I finally got to the mile 25 marker, and I remember telling myself “only 1.2 miles left to go”. Soon after I crossed the mile 25 marker, the marathon course merged with the half marathon course and half marathoners were running on the left hand side of the road making their way to the finish, while marathoners were running on the right hand side of the road. I navigated through an underpass, and after coming out of the underpass I saw solid crowd support for the first time since the first half of the race. Lots of spectators were lined up along the road leading to Hayward Field. Completely exhausted at this point and my legs feeling like lead at this point, I interacted with the crowds as best as I could while holding onto the pace the best that I could.
I crossed the mile 26 mark and saw Hayward Field in the distance. I made a right hand turn to enter the track at Hayward Field and took it all in: I am running on Hayward Field itself. What an incredible feeling to experience. With 150 meters to go on the Hayward Field Track, and with the finish line now visible, I picked up the pace and waved to the crowds at the stands as I covered the last 100 meters to the finish.
I crossed the finish line in 2:46:46, finishing 7 seconds faster than the time I ran at Tokyo two months prior. I knew it was going to be close, but talk about cutting it close! The 7 second marathon PR that I set at Eugene is now my smallest marathon PR, beating the 9 second marathon PR that I set at the 2021 Chicago Marathon. My result was good enough to place within the top 100 overall, which I must say is a nice thing to accomplish!

Post-race

After crossing the finish, I took a moment to catch my breath, and then took in the moment. I was standing in Hayward Field, where numerous high profile track meets were hosted. And I got to run on the small part of the track on my way to the finish. How cool is that?!
Walking through the chute, I collected my finishers medal and ran into running friends who were either spectating in the standards or crossed the finish line behind me and had quick chats with them. While getting post-race pictures at Hayward Field, I noticed a stain on my singlet and I realized that I experienced significant nipple chafing to the point that my nipple bled. So much for having nice finishing line and post-race photos! And it was the first time that it happened to me. I picked up my post-race food in the Hayward Field stadium tunnel, and gradually made my way out of the stadium towards the gear check area; I eventually reunited with my friends who came with me to Eugene to support me there. Eventually we ran into some of the same running friends at the gear check area and we sat around chatting about how our races went.
My friends and I drove back to Portland later that afternoon, and after I got myself cleaned up, we went over to a nearby bar to celebrate.

Final Thoughts and Updated Marathon Progress

While it was a bit disappointing that I faltered down the stretch and did not hit my goals, I am glad that I held on and squeezed out a small 7 second marathon PR at Eugene; it could have gone a whole lot worse. Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but when I was comparing my pace data and elevation data, it appears I went a big aggressive with the paces and took a bit of a risk there. Much of the rolling hills were in the first 5 miles of the race, and chances are I might have overcooked myself on that stretch; if I had done this differently, I would have told myself to relax on the paces on the rolling hills and not overcook myself in the process.
Above all, I am very grateful to make it through this long (and sometimes weird!) training cycle mostly intact, did not experience significant injuries along the way (!), did not burn out along the way (very important!), and picked up numerous PRs along the way: 10K (en route, twice!), 10 mile, half marathon, and full marathon (twice!). And I think it is fair to say that many people would kill for the kind of success that I’ve had during this training cycle.
That said, I learned a few important lessons throughout this training cycle. First, it appears I got into peak shape during the training block leading up to the Tokyo Marathon, and I did not make any subsequent fitness gains afterwards. It probably did not help that I was recovering from Tokyo or recovering from the shorter distance races that I raced during that 8 week period between Tokyo and Eugene. I’m not getting any younger with every passing year, and I probably need to be more diligent with recovery from races moving forward. That said, I have no regrets about doing those races because I still got solid results out of them. And finally, I realized that I prefer shorter training cycles – specifically ones that are between 12 and 16 weeks in duration – and I peak out at anywhere between 10 and 13 weeks into a training cycle, and I’d like to take advantage of my peak fitness soon after and not any longer beyond that. I’m grateful that I was able to handle a 20-week training cycle so that I could stay in shape for both Tokyo and Eugene, but admittedly this was a bit too long for my tastes. Lessons from this longer-than-usual training cycle will have a significant impact how I plan out my training cycles and races moving forward.
The road ahead for me will only get harder, and I vowed at the beginning of the training cycle to trust the process and not let sub-par workouts or sub-par race results drag me down and cause me to lose sight of the bigger picture. And I am still committed to doing that for myself.
For now though, I’m taking some time off training, running for fun, and looking forward to having a social life and enjoying life in general for a bit before transitioning over to summer outdoor track season. And I look forward to what is next for me!
With that said, here’s the updated version of my marathon PR progress within the past few years.

2024.05.20 22:20 Ancient-Mix853 AITAH to stop helping my husband to pay our credit card?

So this credit card started when we were applying for my visa so I(F24) could live with him(M30) in UK which would cost £4300. We did agree he would be the one paying for my visa. I moved in July So we planned a quick trip to Paris and one to London in August. We both used the credit card and I said I’d pay for the trips as soon as I get a job. I’ve had the notes from every single expense in those trips we had so I could pay it off.
Our plan was to live at his moms house till we’d have enough money to put a deposit for a house, unfortunately we had a few problems that could affect my visa status so we had to move out and rent a place in a hurry, we were not much prepared for the expenses since I was only working for a month in UK but we still managed to do so.
So I got a job in September, I never needed a car back home so I don’t have a car license. I had to buy a cheap bike so I could do my 30min commute to work since there’s no buses in here. I’ve paid for our trips with my first paycheque as the deposit and the rent for the house.
Back in December in a conversation I realised the credit card was still at £4000 so I said I’d help him pay for it even if it was just my visa in there. From January 2024 till today I’ve transferred just over £4000 so he could pay the credit card. And I just found out he still owe £4300 in the credit card right now.
We haven’t been able to do anything since September, no dates or going out since I believed we both had no money to do so. I’ve been literally just going to work and spending every single day off at home. I’ve put my learning car lessons on hold so I could pay the credit card quicker.
Only now I got his phone I wrote down every payment made from both of us and I discovered he only paid £1000 while I paid £4700. Which makes me feel disappointed.
The main reason of my upset is his car is getting worse and he needs a car to go to work. He decided he wants to buy a new car which would need to be through finances and it’d cost £13k.
I told him I don’t think it’s fair after giving up from living in my home country, cycling to work in this miserable weather and living in debt since I got here is making me miserable, so I said I decided I’d not help with the credit card anymore.
He said IATH for letting him view the cars he wants to buy and only saying I’m not helping him with the payments while he is in the process to get his finances approved for the car.
AITH in this situation?
Sorry for the long text and English is not my first language.

2024.05.20 21:32 Tomas_Da_Master Is my resume any good for finding an iOS Developer/Engineer job?

I graduated in 2021 and still have not been able to find a job as a software engineer. I've managed to get about 5 interviews max during that time and 2 made it to a second round.
I feel like it may have been a mistake to specialize in iOS development instead of web development. In my desperation, I picked up ReactJS for web development but I also hear web dev is so saturated. However, mobile development jobs seem to be out there but only for people with previous working experience.
But people are still getting hired so could it be my resume? I've changed it up a few times but why can't I even get initial interviews after all these years? Is it because I'm no longer a "fresh grad" and I don't have any relevant work experience since graduating?
If companies would prefer a fresh grad over someone like me who graduated a few years ago who still has no experience, just how screwed am I? Or is my resume just getting bypassed? It seems like no matter how much I change it, I can't get more interview or initial phone calls.
The experience I list on my resume is basically two apps I published to the iOS App Store and one clone app. My work history has just been working as a substitute teacher since my graduation. I have no internships and can't even get internships now because I'm not currently enrolled.
Can this resume be upgraded to where I can actually get callbacks or is my lack of experience and 3 years ago graduation date messing me up?
