2024.05.21 22:27 Little_Acanthaceae87 Tips to improve stuttering from the research: "Rhythmic tapping difficulties in adults who stutter: A deficit in beat perception, motor execution, or sensorimotor integration?" (2023)
This is my attempt to summarize
this research study (
PDF): "
Rhythmic tapping difficulties in adults who stutter: A deficit in beat perception, motor execution, or sensorimotor integration?" (2023)
Goal: - Investigating the rhythmic abilities of people who stutter and to identify which processes potentially are impaired:
- beat perception and reproduction
- the execution of movements, in particular their initiation
- or, sensorimotor integration
Research findings: - People who stutter (PWS) were able to reproduce an isochronous pattern (aka occuring at the same time) on their own, without external auditory stimuli, with similar accuracy as the people who do not stutter (PNS), but with increased variability
- This group difference in variability was observed immediately after passive listening, without prior motor engagement, and was not enhanced or reduced after several seconds of tapping
- However, PWS showed increased tapping variability in the reproduction and synchronization tasks, this timing variability did not correlate significantly with the variability in reaction times or tapping force
- PWS exhibited larger negative mean asynchronies, and increased synchronization variability in synchronization tasks
- These group differences were not affected by beat hierarchy (i.e., “strong” vs. “weak” beats), pattern complexity (non-isochronous vs. isochronous) or presence versus absence of external auditory stimulus (1:1 vs. 1:4 isochronous pattern)
- Differences between PWS and PNS were not enhanced or reduced with sensorimotor learning, over the first taps of a synchronization task
- We hypothesize a deficit in neuronal oscillators coupling in production, but not in perception, of rhythmic patterns, and a larger delay in multi-modal feedback processing for PWS
Intro: - In paced tapping tasks, i.e., when tapping in synchrony with an external metronome or musical excerpt, previous studies reported a greater tapping variability in PWS. In addition, when tapping along with a metronome marking a simple isochronous sequence, PWS tend to tap more ahead of the beat, i.e., they show a greater “Negative Mean Asynchrony” (NMA)
- Differences in movement behavior originate from deficits at more than one level e.g., paced tapping involves:
- (1) the skill to perceive a periodic beat
- (2) the capacity to initiate and execute movements to reproduce that beat
- (3) and the ability to monitor and update movement timing on-line, using sensory feedback
Identifying motor delays and variability at the speech motor execution stage - What exactly is the reason for difficulties at the motor execution stage? For example:
- (1) muscle functioning can be impaired
- (2) inaccurate, unstable, or insufficiently activated internal representations
- Stuttering frequency is influenced by task complexity or speed
- In the current study, we investigated: To what extent is the increased timing variability and decreased timing accuracy of PWS related to difficulties in motor planning and execution?
Beat perception and reproduction - “Beat” perception refers to the internal representation of periodicity when listening, seeing, or feeling a regular sequence of stimuli
- “Oscillators Coupling Hypothesis” suggests that beat perception involves the in phase tuning of endogenous neuronal oscillations in the brain, with external physical periodic or oscillatory phenomena. The observation that steady state-evoked potentials appear in the delta frequency range [0.5–4 Hz] in subjects who were passively listening to a rhythmic sequence at 2.4Hz, provides support for this hypothesis
- “Active Sensing” hypothesis: it extends the Oscillators Coupling Hypothesis by incorporating the role of the motor cortex. It proposes that the tuning of neuronal oscillations in the auditory cortex (which happens in the delta frequency range) is influenced by similar oscillations in the motor cortex. When perceiving beats in the delta frequency range (0.5–4 Hz), there is a coordinated tuning of oscillations between the auditory and motor cortices. This suggests an interaction between sensory perception (hearing the beats) and motor processing (possibly related to movement or rhythm)
Influence of motor engagement and sensorimotor learning - It is uncertain to what extent the motor system influences or is intrinsically involved in timing processes
- Previous studies found some brain activity in motor regions during passive listening to a rhythmic pattern, without any movement, supporting the idea that beat perception intrinsically involves the motor system
- The coupling of neuronal oscillations to an external beat frequency, observed in passive listening to rhythm, is enhanced when gestures, like finger tapping, are simultaneously produced
- These observations support the idea that people build an internal representation of the beat by detecting the periodicity in sensory inputs without actual movement, but that this internal representation is nevertheless consolidated with engaging the motor system
Conclusions:
Is stuttering linked to difficulties in movement initiation due to a dysfunctional basal ganglia? - This study found no significant differences between people who stutter (PWS) and people who do not stutter (PNS) in terms of average finger reaction time and its variability
- No correlation was found between reaction times and the severity of stuttering or synchronization accuracy
- Suggesting that movement initiation difficulties are not a contributing factor to stuttering in externally triggered movements
- The study concluded that timing differences observed between PWS and PNS were not due to difficulties in initiating movements
Are motor impairments in PWS related to inaccurate internal models or neural noise? - The study found no correlation between timing and force variability, suggesting that the observed differences were not due to inaccurate internal models or neural noise
Beat Perception and Reproduction - PWS demonstrated the ability to tap an isochronous sequence without external auditory reference and predict regular events, showing no significant acceleration or deceleration. They maintained acceptable levels of periodicity error and tapping variability, indicating accurate beat perception and transfer to motor actions
- Suggesting no strong deficit in tuning neuronal oscillations with the external beat in PWS
- PWS showed no significant difference in periodicity error during beat reproduction tasks but exhibited greater tapping variability. This indicates that PWS can perceive the beat accurately but have difficulty reproducing it consistently
- The study proposes that timing differences are not due to impaired motor execution but might be explained by the Oscillators Coupling Hypothesis
- PWS showed no difference in marking beat hierarchy compared to PNS. Both groups tapped stronger beats with greater force, indicating that beat hierarchy perception was intact
Sensorimotor Integration and Learning - Current research findings exclude the idea that NMA is a compensation for motor delays or an underestimation of intervals
- PLV also varied with external auditory stimuli and task complexity, indicating that tapping variability in synchronization tasks involves additional sensorimotor variability. However, this was not significantly different between PWS and PNS, suggesting no deficit at this stage
- Improvement in synchronization consistency was observed for both groups over time, but not in accuracy. This excludes a sensorimotor learning deficit in PWS for consolidating internal beat representations
Tips:
- address the impairment in rhythmic abilities regarding beat perception and reproduction, the execution of movements, in particular their initiation, and sensorimotor integration
- address the increased variability when reproducing an isochronous pattern without external auditory stimuli
- address the prior motor engagement
- address the larger negative mean asynchronies (NMA), and increased synchronization variability (NMA refers to: a common phenomenon observed in synchronization tapping tasks is the tendency, even in typical individuals, to anticipate the beat, i.e., demonstrating a Negative Mean Asynchrony) (NMA depends on feedback modalities and is reduced when direct auditory feedback is available compared to information provided by only tactile-kinesthetic feedback. NMA reflects a slower processing and integration of tactile feedback than auditory or visual feedback)
- address the deficit in neuronal oscillators coupling in production (but not in perception) of rhythmic patterns, and address the larger delay in multi-modal feedback processing
- address the significant differences in movement duration, movement timing and reaching accuracy in upper limb and non-speech orofacial movements
- address the larger variability and disrupted timing across and within moving components, such as limbs and articulators (which is suggesting a timing deficit)
- address the dysfunctional dopamine receptors and address the disrupted basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical network (which is affecting both motor control and time processing)
- address the motor delays and variability at the speech motor execution stage
- address the longer voice reaction times
- address the longer movement durations, peak velocity latencies, and lower peak velocities for finger flexion
- address the longer durations between the peak EMG of lip muscles and the speech onset
- learn to rely more on the feedforward and automatized mode of motor control, rather than mainly relying on sensory feedback (leading to inducing additional processing delays and eventually leading to unstable movement behavior of different effectors, especially at fast rate) (For example: Using sensory feedback for on-line monitoring and correcting timing errors. Resulting in delays in the pathway linking motor commands and their sensory consequences that need to be compensated)
- address the peak in beta oscillations in the basal ganglia after the stimulus occurred (which is interpreted as an increased attention and prediction of an event after the stimulus occured)
- address the potential deficit in recovering an underlying beat (which results in increased difficulties to add and remove events (or musical notes) within a periodic pattern. In contrast, if you struggle with the underlying beat, these tasks become harder because you lack the regular reference points, and therefore it becomes more difficult to perceive and reproduce complex rhythms, as well as meter. For example: a triple meter is a waltz (1-2-3, 1-2-3), with one strong beat followed by two weaker ones)
- address the movement initiation difficulties (contributing to stuttering in internally triggered movements)
- address the impairment of (1) the medial premotor circuit (associated with self-triggered actions (in contrast, the lateral premotor circuit - associated with externally triggered actions - is intact in stutterers). Understand that research found no significant timing differences in periodicity error in tasks mediated by the medial premotor circuit, rather they found significant differences in negative mean asynchrony - suggesting overreliance on the lateral premotor circuit involving on external triggers
- address the greater variability in movement amplitude and timing
- address the increased timing variability during simple synchronization tasks
- address the greater tapping variability (PWS can perceive the beat accurately but have difficulty reproducing it consistently)
- address the deficit in coupling neuronal oscillators driving the motor system (that leads to increased variability in beat reproduction)
- address the increased errors in reproducing complex non-isochronous patterns (rather than beat hierarchy perception as this was shown to be intact)
- address the reduced accuracy and consistency in synchronization tasks - with greater negative mean asynchrony (NMA) and lower phase locking values (PLV)
- address the variations in phase angles depended on beat strength, external auditory stimuli, and task complexity
- Ask yourself: What compensations do I implement for motor delays or an underestimation of intervals?
- address the slower processing of tactile and proprioceptive information (leading to increased integration delays between auditory and kinesthetic feedback - which explains why PWS perform taps in advance of the beat to synchronize sensory inputs accurately)
- address the NMA compensatory strategy for slower tactile feedback accumulation

2024.05.21 22:25 BrittleWaters Power Generation Priority (Or How To Use Solar + Batteries Before Turbines Are Activated)
I wanted to fully prioritize Solar power + Battery on my power grid, only activating Turbines as a backup when the Batteries are depleted, to minimize overall non-renewable fuel usage (ie maximize the amount of power used from solar). I found a solution isn't 100% efficient and is more complicated than just sticking everything on one power grid, but it
does work to prioritize Solar + Batteries before running your Turbines.
Here's a simple example setup:
https://i.imgur.com/UpRhXmN.jpeg The basic design goal is "Run off Solar + Batteries until the batteries are depleted, and
only then provide fuel to the Turbines." Because Foundry doesn't have any method of positive control like that, this method operates on the inversion:
prevent fuel from reaching the Boilers until after the Batteries are depleted - indicating that the power provided from Solar Panels has been exhausted - and
then allow the fuel to reach the Boilers. It does this with the fuel switch in the top left of the picture. The first Conveyor Balancer is set to prioritize input from the fuel loop (rather than the fuel production input), and the second Balancer is set to prioritize output to the fuel loop - both are prioritizing "up" in the picture. Fuel is passed immediately through the Logistics Container (since the output Loader on LV3 is always on and the input Loader on LV1 is also powered). This way, the fuel loop only ever gains as much fuel as can fit on the belts in the loop. As long as the Solar + Batteries are still producing/have energy remaining, the input Loader to the Logistics Container keeps running and fuel never spills over onto the Conveyer leading to the Boilers.
There are 3 Low Voltage (LV) grids. LV1 is where your main production (ie main power consumption) is. You can have your fuel mining/production on this grid as well, doesn't matter. Your High Voltage grid will be feeding into LV1. LV2 is the grid with
only the Loaders going into your Boilers. LV3 is the smallest, which
only has a single Loader on it as part of the switch that controls the Solar + Batteries to Turbine transition. LV2 and LV3 should be powered with Solar + Batteries such that they are
always on - these are the Solar Panel + Battery + Transformer lineups on LV2 and LV3 - if either of these run out of power, the whole system will/might get bricked and you'll have to fix it. One Small Solar Panel and one Small Battery provide enough energy per in-game day to run ~20 Loaders indefinitely, so running out of power is easy to avoid.
The High Voltage grid is shared between the Solar + Battery array and the Turbines, because Foundry doesn't allow you to connected multiple HV grids to the same LV grid.
How It Works: - Your primary Solar Panel array (bottom left in the picture) charge your primary grid Batteries and power the Transformers for LV1. During the day, everything runs as normal.
- The fuel switch in the top left of the picture fills with fuel.
- At night, Solar stops producing so your Batteries start draining. Once they're depleted and LV1 has no power, the fuel switch is activated.
- LV1 running out of energy disables the input Load to the Logistics Container. This backs up the second Balancer which then starts feeding fuel to the Boilers. Because LV2 is powered by its own separate Solar + Battery grid, the Loaders for the Boilers are always powered, and the Boilers start running as soon as the fuel reaches them.
- The Boilers run, the Turbines start, and power is restored to your grid.
- Because power was restored to LV1, the input Loader in the fuel switch starts working again, which cuts off fuel to the Boilers. The remaining fuel in the Boilers is burned, charging the batteries and running your production. Once the fuel in the Boilers is burned, the Batteries start depleting. After they deplete, the fuel switch is activated again and the process repeats.
This switching of Turbines on>off>on>off repeats until your Solar Panels start producing again in the morning.
Issues: - Because the Turbines are also recharging the Batteries, they will run at 100% until either the Batteries are charged or their fuel is depleted. This means it's not a perfect system of only running the Turbines when the Solar Panels are offline and Batteries are depleted - more fuel than strictly required will be burned ie the Turbines starting an "on" cycle just as the sun is coming up.
- Power goes out during the transition period. This should only be a few seconds in a well-designed system, set by the distance between the fuel switch and the boilers, but it's still a factor.

2024.05.21 22:25 SpartanBH Creating a "Challenger Corner" for my fantasy league - what are some fun side bet ideas?
We had our first season for 14 team Head-to-Head Cats Keeper money league consisting of pretty close friends. The first season was super successful and had a lot of activity and participation. With that kind of created this organic situation where on occasion, a team would challenge the team they were playing for the week in a side wager (example - whoever loses this week has to pay for a pizza for the winner). Additionally, about 3-4 teams in the league were a
little less active than the rest, so my goal as Commish for this season is to get them more engaged by making each week more meaningful, therefore increasing waiver wire activity, trades, banter talk, etc.
We're looking to expand on that wager premise this season with a formal "Challenger" award - the team that wins the most challenges throughout the season wins a small money prize (only like 5% of the league pot). The idea behind it is to keep people super engaged each week with side wagers for anything (money bet, a vanity bet, food bet, etc etc). It can be for anything and everything that people want to wager on, and I'd like to give the league some more "standard" options - whether it's for a 1v1 or for multiple teams to "opt-in". It's all completely voluntary and given the relatively insignificant prize, won't piss off anyone. For background, we often hang out in discord watching NHL games while playing video games.
My questions is - does anyone have any unique side wagers that would be fun to add in each week? Some of the best ones so far (outside strictly $): - Loser has to buy a meal of some sort to the winner
- Winner gets to change the name of loser's team (and/or discord name) for X weeks
- Loser has to write a daily complimentary speech of at least 250 characters to the winner praising his/her greatness
- Loser buys a subscription loot box of some kind for the winner.
If you folks have any cool ideas for what a wager outcome could be, or for what the wager could be placed specifically on (the whole scoring period, a specific NHL game, or specific NHL players), then I want to hear them!
**********************************************************
If anyone likes this idea, we have implemented it into our league rulebook. More than welcome to use it for your own =) --- (excuse the poor formatting after copy/pasting from Word into here).
Challenger Corner a. The Challenger Corner is where formal & friendly wagers/bets/challenges of any kind can be made in the discord, specifically under #challenger-corner. b. Managers are encouraged to keep the league fun and engaging by challenging their peers to fun bets based off the fantasy week! Managers have many options on how they want to do week to week bets, such as (but not limited to): i. Challenge the specific team you are playing for the scoring period. ii. Challenge another team that you are not specifically playing (can simply just compare stats at end of period to determine victor) iii. Create a multi-team challenge for the period (like who’s team can score most points – everyone who’s interested puts $5 into a pot) iv. Create a challenge where every manager involved picks 1 player to score the most points during a 1 week period c. Examples of challenges include (but certainly not limited to) i. Monetary bets ii. Bets for loser has to buy winner a meal iii. Name Change/Vanity Bets (winner changes name of loser for X period) iv. Speech Bet (loser has to write a speech about the winner) v. Whatever else you can think of that’s fun! d. As we now include a “Challenger Award”, we will begin tracking a running tally of managers who have won/lost bets. In order to qualify for a formal win, you must do the following: i. Challenge and its conditions must be formally posted under #challenger-corner before the start of the first game of the scoring week (or a specifically designated timeframe if occurring during the period – I.E. making a challenge based on one specific NHL game being played). ii. The opponent(s) you are challenging must formally accept under #challenger-corner prior to game/period start. iii. You must notify the Commissioners of a formal challenge accepted, and notify the Commissioners as to who the winner(s) are. iv. Commissioners will keep a running tally and whoever won the most challenges in the year wins the “Challenger Award!” 1. In the event of a tie, the award winners can choose to either split the winnings or enter into another bet/challenge for the amount. v. For any challenges that are agreed to during the week, it is the duties of the managers to hold themselves accountable and honor the bet – Commissioners will not enforce these side-wagers, however if the loser ultimately does not honor the commitment, they may be excluded from the formal Challenger Corner award in the future. submitted by

2024.05.21 22:24 Worth-Mycologist-659 How to make sense of negative reactions to a good reading?
| I use playing cards instead of tarot, however I'm drawing the cards for psychological/understanding myself purposes instead of fortune telling, so I think this subreddit is a good place to ask. I'm not specifically looking for help interpreting! (But would be nice if anyone here does playing cards reading as well.) I just want help in making sense of my own reactions to what I see in the cards. Following the textbook definition of the system I'm learning from, the cards I pulled are very nice, very lucky. "Red cards are good and black cards are bad" and I got 7 reds and 2 blacks (and the blacks are clubs [ "needing effort" kind of bad] instead of spades [ "trouble coming my way" kind of bad]). However, despite this very good fortune, my reaction to this is very... meh, uninterested, with hints of "I don't like this". I'm very confused. Do I not like getting good things or something? The interpretation I came to mostly reminded me to make plans or search for goals in life, which I kinda have to do anyway because I do nothing atm. But I for some reason really hate how it's all leading towards a pleasant life, well-being, safety. For example: "A good mood is a good condition for planning, it'll lead to well-being and financial safety." As if I'm perhaps not interested in having a good life? Well perhaps? Maybe the needing effort part makes me uninterested, maybe I wish to have the fortune handed over to me? I'm still a few months into doing this so I'm still not good at my psychological purposes goal, but really, isn't noticing this something already? Maybe there is something weird in my mind that makes me reject good fortune. https://preview.redd.it/pjcxps2w9u1d1.jpg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b310bab188b05050d6aeff2105c5f9bfe65dd0be submitted by Worth-Mycologist-659 to SecularTarot [link] [comments] |
2024.05.21 22:24 Iloveshawarma_ (M24) My Comprehensive Guide on getting over a break up (everyone's is different) I write this to the male community as when I used to search for break up advice a lot was for women. That being said, you don't need to be a man to understand this, heart break is heart break.
(M24) Hello everyone! Whether you’re reading this from a safe distance away from your breakup, or if it has just happened, please understand that I’m not going to give you the old advice to “GO OUTSIDE.” I’m going to keep it real.
We all know what it’s like—whether you’re the dumpee or the dumper, and in my case, I was the dumpee. We all entered our relationships with rosy-eyed lenses, making us ignore what was wrong until the pot exploded and we were faced with the actual outcome.
Just so you understand a little more about my connection to this piece I’m about to write, I will let you know a bit of what happened to me.
I met someone who I thought at the time was amazing and gorgeous. I’m sure all of you have felt that way before. As time went on, her mother didn’t like my job and that I wasn’t yet in my career of choice, having just graduated in video game design a year before the incident. I was insulted by her family, told I was nothing, that I was a loser and had no ambition. I tried my hardest to be with her, even after her mother placed a deadline on me. I fought through it because I loved my ex. I fought to find work as hard as I could. Then my ex started to insult me, told me I was nothing, I wasn’t husband material, and that she was on another level than me. When I found a job, it wasn’t enough. In the end, my ex left because I couldn’t buy her a home and her mother hated the fact I had a student loan.
Now, I know what you’re thinking… “WTF?” It’s okay. All things are better because today I’m going to share what I’ve learned from this situation and how to reel yourself out of a pit where you feel like you’re not worthy, where you feel like you’ve lost it all.
- Number 1: Even though it’s incredibly hard to do in the beginning, if you feel a pain so heavy you can’t function, you’re human. You were in love, and that part of you in pain is the care and hope you wanted to provide to your partner. Honor yourself for feeling your connection—honor yourself for the level of love you were willing to give. Keep it simple. Not everyone can love so strongly, yet here you are.
- Number 2: Reassess what you did. Ask yourself what you were proud of in that relationship and what you weren’t. Really be thorough. I learned that I was very anxious and had anxiety attacks a lot. Maybe you made a mistake, and it’s hard to forget, but remember the things hardest to forget are the strongest lessons learned. Your goal here is not to feel better. I know it’s crazy, but how can I expect you to feel better, especially if the breakup just happened or if it’s still on your mind every day? Instead, view it as learning who you are, changing who you are, taking responsibility for your shortcomings, and appreciating yourself for the things you did very well. Experience comes from taking responsibility for the things you aren’t willing to admit, but also the things you are proud of.
- Number 3: LOVE DOESN’T GO AWAY. Despite what happened, I love her. I had a connection to her, to always do my best for her. Think of love as clay. The love you feel is sculpted to resemble your partner, but as time goes on with no maintenance to the clay, the sculpture fades. Its sharp edges become smooth bevels, its most standout features erode over time, ultimately becoming something else, a blob if you will. But that clay doesn’t leave; it just lacks direction at this point. So, what if the clay started to resemble you? What if you took time after you’ve gone through what you did wrong and actually walked away improving yourself? I know hearing “work on yourself” is common advice, but no one tells you why. Imagine yourself learning how to cope with your insecurities, giving yourself the love and care you gave to your partner. You know you wouldn’t have given up on them, so why give up on yourself? Imagine yourself conquering your trials, much happier. What can negativity do to you if you’re proud of your trials? Seriously, ask yourself that question: what can bad moments do to a version of you that can’t be defeated by tough moments? All in all, that same blob of clay that was sculpted and molded to envision your love for your partner is now molded into strength for yourself. Love went from them and became love for you.
- Number 4: Listen. Simple, just listen. Listen to those who are always supporting you. I’m sure they know of your circumstance, but in their efforts to help you, take a moment to be a third person. More often than not, the support they give reflects the type of person they think you are. If they tell you to keep pushing and keep going, they know you are someone who can take hits and keep fighting. If they tell you “I know it hurts,” it’s because they trust you to be stronger. Support comes from connection, and connection comes from knowing. If you’re the type of person, like me, who struggles to understand yourself, just listen to those who are supporting you, for in their words to help, you may just see your true reflection.
- Number 5: PROTOTYPE. This is an interesting phase. With everything you’ve learned, what types of things would you like to do differently? What about your personality have you learned? Experiment with your mind, prototype your new personality, introduce new morals, and if they don’t fit, introduce new morals, new ideas, new hobbies! When you have a stronger sense of self, you know what experiments in your mind will lead to better results.
- Number 6: Execute. After all you’ve learned, after all you’ve observed, take command of your life, take your life BACK! Execute your plan to get better, and once you start doing things out of love for yourself, if you just give yourself even just six months of doing things that let you feel better and more accomplished, I promise you will see change. So, if a basic six months can make you feel better, imagine a whole year. Execute your plan.
- Number 7: The most important of all: PATIENCE. This is all going to take time. The ultimate advice I can give you, the only cure to a broken heart, is the one you make for yourself by refusing to be stuck where you are and delving into your life. There is not a one-day cure or a cool mental trick. Take your time, slow down, and remember this is going to make you better.
Whether you are a man or woman, I hope anything I’ve said here can help you out. Because we’re all different, maybe you will tweak these steps a bit, add your own meanings to them, add your own order, or just completely disagree and have your own way of doing things. Those are all perfectly valid. Heartbreak is heartbreak. I’d be damned if I didn’t share what helped me. Truth be told, I miss her, her smile, the way she made me feel like my life was finally together. I remember the best moments; they help steer the ship to better, but the bad moments add the wind to my sails!
You will find someone, you will be okay, and I’m rooting for all of you!
If you make it to the end please upvote this post, because someone somewhere out there needed to hear this today and if that's you, this is your sign things are going to be better, take it from someone whose going through the same thing as you, you're stronger than you realize.

2024.05.21 22:21 JessKaldwin Is it normal be required to be available 24/7?
I've been a PM officially for about 3 years now all at the same company and know we have a somewhat toxic culture but would love some clarification as to what other PMs consider is "normal" in terms of after hours work.
Is it normal to need to be "on call" 24/7, even while on PTO? For example if something breaks in production at midnight or while you're out on PTO - is it normal for PMs to be expected to jump online immediately for an emergency bridge and to provide an RCA?
I understand needing to be available during critical business periods (for example high sales volume, upcoming deadlines, etc.) but overall it feels excessive and unnecessary for the PM to need to be reachable and responsible for being available no matter the time or day. I believe this to be especially true when you have engineers / developers available across rotating schedules.
For extra context, in case it helps - this is a US based company where it's very normal for people to put in extra hours (50+) in many different pretty much across the enterprise.
Would love anyone's input here! I'm actively looking for other roles but would heavily consider a different career if this is just standard and expected everywhere.

2024.05.21 22:21 CuriousOutLoud Common questions about Non-offending Minor Attracted People (NoMAPs)
There is a severe lack of understanding about this community, including among mental health providers and social workers. Stigma, bias, and misconceptions prevent those who are attracted to minors (but do not offend) from seeking help they may need.
CSA = child sexual abuse
NoMAPs = non-offending, minor attracted people: those who are attracted to children but are committed to not causing harm against them
Many non-offending MAPs do not seek professional support, or may withdraw from support, due to the following reasons:
- They are worried that they will be unjustly reported, despite having done nothing wrong (this is based on many cases where professionals misunderstand mandatory reporting laws and report someone to the police just for disclosing their attraction)
- They do not want to be judged by the provider (many therapists, social workers, etc. have intensely negative reactions to clients disclosing their attractions and draw inaccurate conclusions about them based on that disclosure)
- They do not believe their own goals will be met (providers often make CSA prevention the main focus, even when this is not the client’s stated goal. This treats clients as if they are “ticking time bombs” and is not person-centered)
- They do not want to be subjected to attempts to “cure” them of their attractions, or to convert them into teleiophiles, which is shown to be ineffective and harmful
Those of us in the social work and mental health fields can address common misconceptions about this group, as a way to encourage MAPs to get help when they need it. Greater education and understanding about MAPs increases their well-being while also contributing to the prevention of CSA.
Common questions Are you saying child sexual abuse is acceptable? Absolutely not. Causing harm to children in the form of in-person/online sexual contact; CSAM (sometimes referred to as child pornography); grooming; or any other inappropriate behavior is not and will never be acceptable.
Many people who are attracted to minors are vehemently against these forms of harm as well, and do not support ideas such as lowering the age of consent. There are entire communities of minor attracted people who are committed to not harming children.
Isn’t using the term ‘MAPs’ normalizing pedophilia? Only a minority of the population experiences a primary attraction to children. In this sense, pedophilia and other forms of minor attraction are not “normal”, in the same way that LBGTQ identities are not “normal” by proportion to the general population.
When people refer to normalizing something, they are usually talking about removing the stigma behind it, or acknowledging that it is acceptable.
Having an unchosen, unchangeable attraction to children is not inherently wrong, immoral, predatory, or pathological. It becomes so only when harm is involved. Attraction itself is not a behavior.
Shouldn’t we be protecting children from MAPs? We should absolutely protect children from abusers, groomers, and predators. These terms are not synonymous with being minor attracted. In fact, research shows that the majority of child sexual abuse cases are carried out by people who do not meet the criteria for pedophilia (see “Sources” section below for reference).
When somebody feels they are at risk for harming a child, they should be able to seek immediate and effective help. Some NoMAPs need temporary or ongoing support in remaining resilient against offending, but this does not represent all or even the majority of NoMAPs. Many in this community have no intention of ever harming a child, and they are not at risk for doing so.
It is also important to note that many MAPs are still children themselves. MAPs tend to become aware of their attractions around the time of puberty or early adolescence. Children who are MAPs deserve the same degree of safety and well-being that other children do.
Why is the term ‘MAP’ even used? This term has become more widely used for two main reasons:
- It emphasizes attraction over action. The word ‘pedophile’ has become so conflated with ‘offender’ in every sector of our society, that most people assume a behavioral component when they hear the word. ‘Minor attracted person’, on the other hand, emphasizes that we are talking about those with an attraction, which includes both those who do and those who do not act on it.
Because there are MAPs who are also offenders, the term ‘Non-offending Minor Attracted Person’ (NoMAP) is useful when we are talking specifically about those who have an attraction but do not act on it.
- ‘MAP’ is also a more accurate, all-encompassing way to refer to the community as a whole. This includes people with infantophilia, pedophilia, and (ep)hebephilia. It would not make sense, for example, to call someone who is primarily attracted to 15-18 year olds a pedophile.
However, many people do not self-identify with the term ‘MAP’. Some identify as pedophiles, hebephiles, boy lovers, girl lovers, or other terms. Some may use multiple terms to describe themselves. What’s important is that we should honor how each individual person self-identifies their attraction, and not impose a label on them.
Alternatives have also been suggested by those who conduct research with this community, such as ‘child attracted person’ as opposed to ‘minor attracted person’. I use ‘MAP’ here because it is the most widely accepted way to refer to the community as a whole.
What would someone who harms a child be called? Depending on the context, people who harm children could be called many things—offender, abuser, predator, or groomer, to name a few examples.
Research shows that the majority of child sexual abuse cases are carried out by people who do not meet the criteria for pedophilia. (See “Sources” section below to learn why someone who’s not primarily attracted to children would sexually abuse a child.)
Is pedophilia a mental illness/diagnosis? It depends. Some MAPs are committed to not offending, are not at risk for offending, and have come to terms with their attraction. These individuals have no reason to be pathologized.
Many others are not at risk for offending, yet they desire professional help for mental health conditions (like depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation) that result from the hatred they receive in our society. These individuals also have no reason to be pathologized, as their mental health conditions result from stigma rather than from the attraction itself.
Some MAPs desire professional help in dealing with the difficult emotions resulting from not being able to have a fulfilling sexual or romantic connection, particularly those who are exclusively attracted to children. (Many MAPs are attracted to both children and adults, and may be in relationships with adults.)
There are also MAPs who desire professional help in remaining resilient against offending. In these cases, and in cases where MAPs do harm children, pedophilia would be considered pathological since there is significant distress and/or harm involved.
Is pedophilia a sexual orientation? The available research points to pedophilia and other forms of minor attraction being an age-based sexual orientation, in that the attraction is unchosen, typically arises during the time of puberty or early adolescence, and remains fairly constant throughout one’s life.
Are you suggesting that MAPs are part of the LGBTQ+ community? Age-based orientations are by nature different from gender-based orientations, in that there is no safe or ethical way for an adult to engage sexually or romantically with a child. The experience of MAPs is also vastly different from that of LGBTQ individuals in several ways.
While there are some parallels that can be drawn between studies on stigma among LGBTQ individuals and the experience of stigma among MAPs, these are two separate communities.
Can someone’s attraction to children be changed? Empirical data, based on qualitative and quantitative studies, points to the fact that pedophilia and other forms of minor attraction cannot be changed or "cured". (See “Sources” section below for reference.)
How many MAPs are there in the world? Across various studies, the average incidence of minor attraction, meaning those who are primarily attracted to minors, comes out to about 5% of the adult population worldwide. This number is likely an undercount for the following reasons:
- Many studies do not account for hebephilia (primary attraction to pubescent children)
- There is usually a focus on men, despite the fact that many MAPs are women
- Some people choose not to disclose their attractions in the first place
Why should I care about any of this? Reducing stigma against NoMAPs contributes to a safer society for all, based around empathy and evidence. Many people do not feel safe disclosing their attraction for fear of being unjustly reported, misunderstood, or physically harmed.
Unfortunately, stories of MAPs being rejected by family members, forced out of educational programs, reported to the police, and made to feel like a monster– even in the absence of any harm to a child— are all too common. This prevents many MAPs from seeking or continuing to receive support, which in turn can lead to:
- Increased incidence of mental health issues (such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation)
- More difficulty in refraining from offending (for some MAPs; others are not at risk to begin with)
The misconceptions and harmful attitudes that we have toward non-offending MAPs directly interfere with them receiving the support they may need, decreasing MAPs’ well-being and putting children at greater risk. This includes children who are MAPs themselves.
Where can I learn more? There are many resources available to learn about MAPs. These include:

2024.05.21 22:17 bithundr CMV: Racism and other forms of bigotry should NOT be topics
MAIN CLAIM: The entire concept of racism is irrelevant, and discussing it from whichever standpoint will lead to nothing.
REASONS: - Beliefs ≠ Actions — An individual has the right to make any sort of conclusions towards anything, since we're all equal, no one can claim moral superiority or enlightenment. With that said, actions that can result from racist beliefs are NOT unethical BECAUSE of racism but INDEPENDENTLY from it. EX: Murder (It's not racism that makes murder unethical), insults (it's not racism that makes offensive speech unethical), discrimination (It's not racism that makes treating another as inferior that makes that act itself unethical).
- The notion of racism necessarily implies the existence of race — When anti-racist people speak out against racism, they do so refuting the core notion that "there are no superior races", this will lead to no results since it leads to it being a matter of difference of information and experience (Racists have, in their heads, good and tangible reasons to be racists that can be pointed out). HOWEVER, the rebuttal of this core notion has a VALIDATING effect for racists because it makes their main assumption that race exists LEGITIMATE. Since it's not that assumption that is being tackled the racist will comfortably believe that if the anti-racist had been through similar experiences they'd understand why a certain race is inferior. Meanwhile, if the concept of race was refuted as a whole, there'd be no space for those conclusions. One thing to be considered is that the existence of the race DOES necessarily imply superior and inferior (EX: if there are races, then there are groups that are genetically different, which means that they will necessarily have different IQs, one higher, one lower), at most it can be argued that this superiority and inferiority is context-dependant, but this does not matter for the racist who WILL use the info in those exact contexts.
- Anti-racism oftentimes further propagates racism — A quick example is enough. When new movies, or other forms of media, come out featuring black individuals in prominent roles, many ardent anti-racists start dissecting the traits and plot points attributed to these black characters, to make sure there is no racism. This has a dehumanizing effect since it necessarily implies that are certain actions/behaviors/plot points that can ONLY happen to blacks if a racist screenwriter decides so. With anti-racism, the focus is constantly on race, taking the individual out of the equation and judging him solely through a racial viewpoint. I was watching a video by Metatron where he reacts to a video by an historian analysing a scene from the movie 300, the historian states that it is ableist for a deformed character to be represented as deceitful and a traitor. This is not about race but is a similar enough theme. What happens here is that the experience of the deformed character is completely dismissed (they have reasons to be deceitful) and its free-will completely ignored because the focus is on its appearance and body by the very people who criticise it. It's also implying that deformed people cannot be traitors. Why wouldn't they? If we're all the same?
- It has an ostracising effect — Very often people forget that racists have REASONS to be racist. If they have had a disproportionate amount of bad experiences with people of a certain race, it's NATURAL to adapt to this experience with misguided conclusions. The same way that, on a larger scale, women can develop a generalised fear of men due to sexual harassment. When morality is brought to the topic, it further separates and alienates racists by DISMISSING THEIR EXPERIENCE. This is wrong because it's demanding that people be more rational than they are capable of on their own and invalidating their fears and natural adaptations, and all of this because people either seek the moral highground, want to virtue signal, or are lazy in actually tackling racist issues. No conflict will EVER be solved by further alienating someone by attributing to them immoral qualities. No one is born immoral, everyone is malleable. But treating them as monsters most certainly ensures they'll remain monsters. It is extremely counter-productive to alienate racists, as if one could solve problems of discrimination by preaching to those that are already converted. Needless to say, any actions need to be punished or rewarded accordingly, regardless of the person behind them.
- It doesn't tackle the core issues — It happens INSANELY often that people reject actual facts about reality in order to avoid racism and bigotry. Using as an example the 13/50 statistic. This statistic IS real. People immediately want to hide or quickly "disprove" it away because of its danger, but again, this is counter-productive and lazy. If a racist sees this statistical fact, and sees that anti-racists delusionally reject it, his view WILL BE LEGITIMISED. Applying a moral layer to a matter of INFORMATION is a terrible, terrible idea. No one is immoral for trying to understand a statistic, but if they are treated as such, they will be such.
MY PROPOSED ALTERNATIVES: - The experience of racists should be openly validated, tackled and EXPLAINED. Carefully demonstrating what the 13/50 means for racists has, potentially, very positive effects. Not only could such an explanation, if done effectively, be enough to stop it from being used for racists conclusions, it could have the complete opposite effect and make racists more aware of the experience of blacks from the perspective of economical and societal issues (of which human GREED is the main source). This should be done WITHOUT any morality involved. It takes work, strength, courage, knowledge and reasoning, so of course it is harder than merely preaching, but it is the only thing that can work. It requires open-minded, detached and precise counter-arguments for the exact things racists say, instead of generalised moralistic statements or attempts and censoring.
- There should be a wider spread of GENUINE black role models and positive actions, as well as history. This has, in my opinion, never be started and has had a counter-productive effect since what media has done is take away stories from caucasians, for example, and trade those with blacks, as well as constantly trying to force formulaic and generic examples of black strength that have no effect because they aren't true (EX: Wakanda). Whites have little access to true and inspiring stories from other cultures. A movie like "the boy who harnessed the wind", for example, which tells a real and authentic story about an african family, has 10000x more power than the modern "ACCEPT THAT OTHER RACES ARE GOOD AND YOU'RE A DEMONIC WHITE" media.
- Make an actual effort to finally NOT SEE COLOR, which used to be the main goal. Even if others do see color, if you try to tackle it from their perspective, you won't win. Offer a different perspective, an alternative worldview, and don't challenge theirs. No one is special.

2024.05.21 22:15 luxfactusest What to put on my Resume as a 36 year old with no relevant work experience?
TLDR
- CS graduate.
- Never worked in tech.
- But building web apps 7+ years as hobby and freelancer.
- Want to kick off my web dev career.
- What do I put on my resume?
I graduated in Computer Science in 2011, but instead of pursuing a career in tech I spent the next 7 years building and running a small travel agency with my brother. By 2018, I got burnt out, sold my shares, and with my savings decided to travel.
So with my savings, the privileged Westerner that I am, I relocated to Asia and Latin America where my Euro would go far, and went all-in on indiehacking.
My goal was essentially to build my own apps and make a living from that.
I was confident that within 2 years I'd be making a good living from this.
Well, 2 years pass. Still no money. Savings drying up. Picked up some freelance work on the side to pay the bills while continuing to indiehack..
2 years became 3, then 4, then 5... and now here I am 6 years later and I'm
making less than $1k a month coding 50-60 hours a week.
Talk about sunk-cost fallacy...
The miserable money I am making is purely from my freelance work (which for the most part I hate... WordPress, or some frontend stuff, nothing backend heavy which is my real expertise).
So I've come to realise I suck at sales. I suck at marketing. And really all I want to do so is work on interesting technical problems.
And at the ripe age of 36, I can now understand why people get day jobs lol
And now to get to my question: How do I go about getting my first tech job?
I have
7+ years amateur experience (PHP, Python and JavaScript) But
0 years professional. So I understand I would need to start from the bottom as a Junior Developer.
I haven't applied for a job since I was 19. No idea how to go about writing a resume for someone in my circumstances.
Portfolio
I have a relatively large portfolio of personal projects (mostly apps and SaaS)
In terms of "real projects", my client work is either:
- not really relevant to the role I want (mostly WordPress, landing pages)
- something not so easily demonstratable
- under NDA and cannot disclose
Qualifications
- I hold a BSc Hons in Computer Science (graduated in 2011)
GitHub
- haven't contributed to open-source projects
- have 6+ years of commits (mostly Laravel) - more than happy to open-source a couple of big projects
Technologies
Laravel, Vue.js, SQL, Nginx, Docker, Ubuntu, Linux, git, Tailwind, JavaScript, PHP, HTML, CSS, Filament, Statamic, Alpine, Livewire, Nuxt, WordPress, Python, Django
Furthermore, I'm an EU national and open to relocating to a new country for work.
My biggest dilemma, is having no idea what to put in my resume since I have zero relevant work experience.
Should I just be upfront and say I have no professional work experience?
My gut feeling is that most employers aren't keen on hiring someone with my track record (i.e. being self-employed and freelance... ok fine... unemployed).
Furthermore, they might be concerned that I plan to open my own business in the future and go in competition with them. It's a reasonable concern.
So what to put on my resume as a 36 year old aspiring software/web developer with no relevant work experience?
No need to sugar-coat your answers. Be as blunt and direct as you want. I appreciate all advise.

It is crucial to explore options that not only fit within one's budget but also contribute to maintaining clean and sustainable living spaces. The rise of DIY and budget-friendly junk removal methods reflects a growing trend towards practical and economical waste management strategies. For example, imagine a scenario where a homeowner in California needs to dispose of old furniture without spending excessively. By delving into various cost-effective junk removal options, such as recycling, donation, or leveraging local pickup services, individuals can efficiently declutter their space while minimizing expenses. This sets the stage for understanding how cost-effective approaches to junk removal can benefit both individuals and the environment. Cost-effective junk removal options are not only about saving money but also about making a positive impact on the environment. By choosing sustainable methods of waste disposal, individuals can contribute to reducing landfill waste and promoting a cleaner ecosystem. The shift towards affordable and eco-friendly junk removal practices signifies a broader movement towards responsible waste management in today's society. By incorporating sustainability into cost-effective solutions, individuals can achieve a harmonious balance between financial savings and environmental consciousness. Understanding the Costs of Junk Removal Services Local junk removal companies play a significant role in offering upfront pricing and estimates to customers, providing insights into the potential costs involved in waste removal. Additionally, some providers may incentivize cost savings by offering discounts for regular or bulk pickups, making their services more appealing to budget-conscious individuals. The variability in pricing structures for junk removal services emphasizes the importance of comparing quotes and services to identify the most cost-effective option that aligns with one's specific needs. To illustrate, consider a situation where a homeowner needs to clear out a garage filled with bulky items. By obtaining estimates from different junk removal services and understanding the factors that influence pricing, such as the type and volume of items to be removed, individuals can make informed decisions that prioritize both affordability and quality of service. This proactive approach empowers customers to navigate the junk removal process with financial prudence in mind. DIY junk removal not only offers cost-effective solutions but also empowers individuals to take control of their waste management efforts. By utilizing reusable packaging materials and implementing proper planning strategies, individuals can streamline the junk removal process, saving both time and money. Online tutorials and guides serve as valuable resources, providing step-by-step instructions for safe and efficient DIY junk removal methods that can be easily implemented by homeowners looking to reduce expenses. DIY Junk Removal: A Cost-Effective Approach Engaging in do-it-yourself junk removal presents numerous benefits beyond just cost savings. In addition to reducing expenses, DIY methods allow individuals to customize their waste disposal process according to their preferences and schedules. By incorporating innovative techniques and creative solutions, homeowners can transform junk removal into a rewarding and fulfilling experience that aligns with their unique needs and priorities. For instance, imagine a homeowner who decides to repurpose old furniture instead of discarding it during a DIY junk removal project. By refurbishing and upcycling items, they not only save on disposal costs but also contribute to reducing waste and promoting sustainability. This hands-on approach to junk removal not only fosters a sense of accomplishment but also instills a deeper appreciation for the value of reusing and repurposing items in a resource-conscious manner. Leveraging Local Bulk Pickup Services Local municipalities often provide bulk pickup services as a cost-effective solution for residents looking to dispose of large items. These services, which are typically offered at little to no additional cost, enable individuals to declutter their spaces without incurring significant expenses. By taking advantage of these community-based initiatives, homeowners can access a convenient and budget-friendly option for junk removal. Collaborating with neighbors or community groups for joint bulk pickups can further enhance the cost-effectiveness of this approach. By coordinating efforts and sharing resources, individuals can collectively reduce the overall expenses associated with waste disposal while fostering a sense of community engagement and collaboration. This cooperative approach not only benefits participants financially but also promotes a spirit of camaraderie and mutual support in managing junk removal tasks. Recycling and Donation: Save Money and the Environment The practice of donating and recycling items offers a dual benefit of cost savings and environmental conservation. By donating gently used items to charitable organizations or recycling centers, individuals can contribute to charitable causes and reduce the amount of waste destined for landfills. The cost-effectiveness of this approach lies in the potential for tax deductions, free pickup services, and the satisfaction of knowing that items are being repurposed or recycled for a greater purpose. Moreover, recycling centers play a crucial role in incentivizing recycling efforts by offering financial incentives for certain types of recyclable materials. Individuals can capitalize on these incentives by segregating and disposing of recyclable items responsibly, thereby reducing their overall junk removal expenses. The financial rewards associated with recycling not only offset disposal costs but also encourage individuals to adopt sustainable practices that benefit both their wallets and the environment. Comparison of Professional Junk Removal Services Professional junk removal services offer a range of benefits that extend beyond mere waste disposal. By opting for professional services, individuals can access comprehensive solutions that include junk removal, cleaning, and post-removal tidying up. These bundled services not only save time and effort for customers but also ensure a thorough and efficient junk removal process that meets high standards of cleanliness and organization. For example, consider a scenario where a homeowner hires a professional junk removal service that partners with recycling facilities. By leveraging these partnerships, the service provider can minimize disposal costs by diverting a significant portion of collected items for recycling. This eco-friendly approach not only reduces environmental impact but also contributes to sustainable waste management practices that benefit both customers and the community at large. By choosing professional services with a focus on recycling and sustainability, individuals can align their junk removal efforts with broader environmental goals. https://preview.redd.it/madnwzyo7u1d1.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=239338b2788d3c969ccd508d711efaed4f56b710 The Role of Junk Removal Companies in Sustainability Junk removal companies play a pivotal role in promoting sustainability through their operations and initiatives. Referral discounts, seasonal promotions, and loyalty programs are common incentives offered by these companies to attract and retain customers. By taking advantage of these cost-saving opportunities, individuals can optimize their junk removal experience and enjoy additional benefits beyond the basic service offerings. To illustrate, imagine a scenario where a homeowner receives a referral discount for recommending a junk removal service to a friend. By leveraging this discount, both the existing customer and the referred individual benefit from reduced rates, creating a win-win situation for all parties involved. Seasonal promotions, such as spring cleaning specials, offer another avenue for customers to save on junk removal costs while decluttering their spaces efficiently. By staying informed about these special offers and deals, individuals can make informed decisions that maximize savings and value for their junk removal needs. By harnessing waste as a resource for energy production, companies can not only reduce the volume of junk in landfills but also contribute to the development of renewable energy sources that benefit local communities. Collaborative efforts between junk removal companies and municipalities are instrumental in driving sustainable waste management practices. 2024.05.21 22:10 Strong-Ingenuity9662 Why some parents like to cause trouble?
My relationship with my siblings is excellent, and so is our relationship with our mother. However, our father always tries to create problems out of nowhere, even over small things.
All his problems are related to obedience; he wants us to obey him blindly and follow all his orders, even those that concern our personal lives.
Here is the thing, I’m an adult in my late 20’s, my siblings are adults too.
For example, he believes he has the right to prevent me from marrying someone he does not approve of, or to stop me from changing my career, or moving to a different city.. etc. (Very personal stuff overall)
I tried to talk to him to understand the reason behind his thoughts, he then started using the religion bs, he said something along the lines of that god ordered children to obey their parents. (Btw I know even he doesn’t totally believe in this but he still said it to justify his actions)
Of course, my siblings and I do not follow his orders, but every time we ignore him, he starts a new fight and escalates the issues more and more.
I don't want to reach a point where I cut him off, but I really don't know how to deal with him anymore.
I would like to know the psychological reason behind his behavior. Are these behaviors common among fathers towards their adult children, or is my father a the exception? Why would he do that to his family?

2024.05.21 22:09 MrBackBreaker586 GameStop (GME) Deep Dive (DD)
I'll update this as I go. Please check back when you can and point out errors if you can find any.
GameStop (GME) Deep Dive (DD)
Hey Apes! 🦍🚀
Let's dive into a comprehensive analysis of GameStop (GME), covering key factors that could influence the stock price, technical analysis, potential catalysts, market sentiment, and important dates. This DD aims to provide a well-rounded understanding of what might impact GME in the near future.
Potential Failure of the LULD Mechanism and Its Impact on a MOASS
The Limit Up-Limit Down (LULD) mechanism is designed to prevent extreme volatility by setting upper and lower price bands for stocks. However, in certain scenarios, this mechanism can fail, potentially leading to the Mother of All Short Squeezes (MOASS). Here’s how this could happen, along with the mathematical implications.
How the LULD Mechanism Can Fail
- Extreme Market Volatility:
- Rapid Successive Halts: During periods of extreme volatility, the price of a stock like GME can hit the upper limit repeatedly, causing successive trading halts. This can exacerbate panic and volatility rather than calming the market.
- Example: If GME’s price rapidly moves from $100 to $150 within a short period, hitting multiple LULD halts, it can create a feedback loop of volatility.
- Algorithmic Trading and High-Frequency Trading (HFT):
- Algorithmic Pressure: High-frequency trading algorithms can push prices rapidly, triggering the LULD bands frequently. If these algorithms continue to trade aggressively, they can cause more volatility.
- Market Manipulation: There’s a theoretical risk that traders could manipulate prices by coordinating trades to trigger LULD bands, although such actions are illegal.
- Technical Glitches:
- System Failures: Technical issues or outages can disrupt the LULD mechanism. If trading systems fail during high volatility, it could lead to unmanaged price spikes.
- Market Fragmentation:
- Inconsistent Application: With trading occurring across multiple venues, discrepancies in how LULD bands are applied can lead to inconsistent trading halts and market confusion.
Impact on MOASS
- Short Covering and Buy Pressure:
- Short Interest: If GME has a high short interest (e.g., 64.37 million shares shorted), a rapid price increase can trigger margin calls for short sellers. They will be forced to buy back shares to cover their positions, adding to the buying pressure.
- Example Calculation:
- Initial Price: $20
- Short Interest: 64.37 million shares
- Price Increase: If the price increases to $100, short sellers might need to cover, buying back 64.37 million shares.
- Buying Pressure Dynamics:
- Mathematics of Covering:
- If short sellers need to cover 64.37 million shares and the average daily trading volume is 10 million shares, it would take 6.437 trading days to cover without additional buying pressure.
- However, in a MOASS scenario, buying pressure can skyrocket, reducing the time frame significantly.
- Example Scenario:
- Price Movement and Halts:
- Day 1: Price moves from $20 to $50, triggering multiple LULD halts.
- Day 2: Price moves from $50 to $100 due to continued buying pressure and short covering.
- Mathematical Implication:
- Short sellers covering 64.37 million shares at an average price of $75 would need $4.828 billion.
- If the price moves to $200 due to continued pressure, the required funds double to $12.874 billion for covering the same short interest.
Potential for Exponential Price Increase
- Feedback Loop: As the price increases, more short sellers are forced to cover, leading to further price increases. This feedback loop can cause exponential growth in the stock price.
- Limitations of LULD: If the LULD mechanism fails to contain the volatility, the price can move rapidly, triggering more short covering and buy pressure.
Conclusion
The failure of the LULD mechanism during periods of extreme volatility, driven by high-frequency trading and market manipulation, can lead to a significant short squeeze. The mathematical implications show how rapid price increases and forced short covering can create a feedback loop, potentially leading to a MOASS. Understanding these dynamics helps investors anticipate potential market movements and the limitations of volatility contols.

Key Factors Influencing GME's Stock Price
- Fundamental Analysis
- Earnings Reports: GME's quarterly earnings can significantly impact the stock price. The next earnings report on June 5, 2024, is crucial. Strong financial performance or strategic announcements can boost investor confidence.
- Revenue and Profitability: GME has reported $5.27 billion in revenue over the past 12 months with a net income of $6.70 million. Monitoring these indicators is essential for long-term valuation.
- Debt Levels: ### Debt-to-Equity Ratio Calculation
- Short-term debt: $11 million
- Long-term debt: $23.6 million
- Total Debt: $34.6 million
- Total Equity: $1,267.2 million
Debt-to-Equity Ratio Debt-to-Equity Ratio = Total Debt / Total Equity Debt-to-Equity Ratio = 34.6 million / 1,267.2 million Debt-to-Equity Ratio = 0.027
Summary
- Total Debt: $34.6 million
- Total Equity: $1,267.2 million
- Debt-to-Equity Ratio: 0.027
Explanation
The debt-to-equity ratio decreased from 0.045 to 0.027 due to GameStop's efforts to reduce its debt while maintaining its equity base. This lower ratio indicates a stronger equity position and less reliance on debt.
Current Creditors
GameStop's current debt includes a French term loan, part of their short-term and long-term debt obligations.
- Technical Analysis
- Support and Resistance Levels: Key support levels are around $20, while resistance levels are between $50 and $60. Breaking through these levels can indicate potential price movements.
- Volume: High trading volumes can signal strong investor interest. Monitor volume spikes for potential price actions.
- Patterns: Watch for technical patterns like the descending triangle, which is typically bearish. However, a breakout above resistance could indicate a bullish reversal.
Adjusted Float and Short Interest
Outstanding Shares: 306.19 million
Minus DRS: 75.5 million
Minus Institutional Holdings: Approximately 87.17 million
Minus Insider Holdings: Approximately 61.46 million + Ryan Cohen's Holdings (36.847 million)
Adjusted Float Calculation: 306.19 million (Outstanding Shares) - 75.5 million (DRS) - 87.17 million (Institutional Holdings) - (61.46 million + 36.847 million) (Insider Holdings including Cohen's) = 45.213 million
Short Interest Percentage: (64.37 million / 45.213 million) * 100 ≈ 142.3%
Potential Use of Warrants and Preferred Stock
Issuing Warrants: -
Concept: GameStop could issue warrants to shareholders as a dividend, e.g., 1 warrant per 7 shares owned. -
Benefit: This incentivizes shareholders and provides potential to buy shares at a favorable price, creating scarcity in common stock.
Preferred Shares: -
Concept: Issuing preferred shares can offer fixed dividends and have priority over common shares in liquidation. -
Impact: Preferred shares require board approval and SEC filings, potentially affecting the market and short sellers by reducing the float of common shares.
Impact of 45 Million New Shares
Response to the Theory on GME's Recent S-3 Filing:
What’s Happening:
- S-3 Filing History:
- GameStop filed a Form S-3 to potentially issue up to 1 billion shares, with 300 million currently outstanding. This is similar to a move they made in December 2020 before the January 2021 short squeeze. The S-3 allows GameStop to register securities quickly and respond swiftly to market conditions.
- Source: www.investing.com
Why This Matters:
- Two Possible Outcomes for Shorts:
- Accept the Offer: Shorts could buy the offered shares, admitting their positions and potentially converting to longs.
- Decline the Offer: If shorts don’t accept, it exposes the extent of their naked short positions, revealing potential fraud.
Strategic Implications:
- Regulator Signal:
- This filing signals to the SEC that GameStop is willing to resolve the situation constructively, placing the onus on shorts to reveal their positions. This strategic move puts pressure on shorts and highlights the transparency and compliance of GameStop’s management.
Relevant Data and Comparisons:
- Historical Context and Data:
- December 2020 Example: Before the January 2021 short squeeze, GameStop made a similar filing. The shorts didn’t cover, leading to a massive price surge. For instance, the stock price skyrocketed from around $20 to an intraday high of $483 on January 28, 2021.
- Current Short Interest: As of May 2024, GME’s short interest remains high, with 64,373,343 shares short, representing 20.55% of the float. This high short interest indicates a significant potential for another short squeeze if the shorts are forced to cover.
- Sources: www.tradingview.com, www.investing.com
- Market Reactions and Patterns:
- Volume and Price Data: Recent high trading volumes and price surges, such as GME’s rise to $80 in pre-market trading, suggest strong market reactions to strategic filings and movements. This pattern mirrors past events and indicates potential future volatility.
- Source: www.tradingview.com
Comparisons to Other Companies:
- Tesla (TSLA):
- Similar Scenario: Tesla faced significant short interest and skepticism but managed to drive its stock price up through strong financial performance and strategic moves. Retail investor support played a crucial role, forcing shorts to cover and leading to a massive short squeeze. For instance, Tesla's stock price increased from around $50 in 2019 to over $800 in 2021.
- Result: Tesla's market cap increased substantially, showcasing the power of strategic corporate actions combined with retail investor momentum.
- Volkswagen (VW) 2008:
- Historical Short Squeeze: Volkswagen became the world’s most valuable company briefly in 2008 during a short squeeze when Porsche revealed it had a majority stake in VW. This forced short sellers to cover their positions at significantly higher prices, causing the stock price to soar from around €210 to over €1,000 within a few days.
- Impact: The stock price soared, illustrating the potential power of strategic moves and market reactions, similar to what could happen with GameStop if shorts are forced to cover.
Conclusion:
This isn’t about diluting shares but offering shorts a way out and proving to regulators that GameStop is handling this responsibly. Whether shorts accept or decline, their actions will reveal the extent of their positions, potentially leading to a significant market impact.
Stay strong, apes! 🚀🦍💎🙌

- Adjusted Float Calculation: ``` 351.19 million (New Outstanding Shares)
- 75.5 million (DRS)
- 87.17 million (Institutional Holdings)
- (61.46 million + 36.847 million) (Insider Holdings including Cohen's) = 90.213 million ```

Upcoming Catalysts: -
Earnings Report on June 5, 2024: Positive earnings or strategic announcements could boost investor confidence and drive the stock price higher. -
Regulatory Deadlines on May 24 and May 31, 2024: Increased transparency and regulatory compliance could impact market dynamics. Nice one, but you forgot one hype date:
investor.gamestop.com 2024 Annual Meeting of Stockholders (“annual meeting”) on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., CDT LEAPS and Other MOASS Theories
LEAPS (Long-Term Equity Anticipation Securities): -
Concept: LEAPS are options with expiration dates longer than one year. They can be used by investors to gain leveraged exposure to GME's price movements over a longer period. -
Impact: If retail investors continue to buy LEAPS, it can create significant upward pressure on the stock price as market makers hedge their positions by buying the underlying stock.
Preferred Shares and Warrants: -
Issuance of Preferred Shares or Warrants: GME could issue preferred shares or warrants to shareholders, creating additional buying pressure as these instruments are exercised.
Naked Short Selling and Regulatory Compliance: -
May 24, 2024: Deadline for resolving all outstanding material inconsistencies for FINRA CAT reporting, increasing market transparency and potentially impacting short selling practices. -
January 2, 2025: Implementation of new SEC rules, which could further enhance market transparency and impact short interest reporting.
New Data: Ryan Cohen's Insider Transactions
Insider Transactions: -
Ryan Cohen: Recent Form 4 from 2023 filing shows Cohen acquired 253,204 shares at $22.2485 and 190,638 shares at $22.9075. Total shares beneficially owned after transactions are 36,657,204 and 36,847,842 respectively.
Conclusion
While predicting GME's exact price movements is challenging, several factors suggest potential for upward movement: -
High Short Interest: Potential for a short squeeze. -
Technical Indicators: Key support levels and potential breakout patterns. -
Market Sentiment: Positive retail investor activity and upcoming catalysts. -
LEAPS and Other MOASS Theories: Additional strategies like LEAPS and preferred shares could contribute to upward pressure.

Theoretical MOASS (Mother of All Short Squeezes) and Potential Prices for GME
Understanding the potential outcomes of a MOASS for GameStop (GME) involves several key factors and calculations. Here, we'll break down some of the critical components that could influence the theoretical prices during a MOASS.
Key Factors
- Short Interest and Float: The higher the short interest relative to the float, the more pressure on short sellers to cover their positions, potentially driving the price up.
- Buy-In Pressure: Retail investors holding and buying more shares can create scarcity, driving the price higher as shorts scramble to cover.
- Market Dynamics and Liquidity: As the price rises, liquidity becomes a significant factor. Higher prices may lead to increased volatility and rapid price swings.
Short Interest and Float Calculation
Using the current data:
Outstanding Shares: 306.19 million
Minus DRS: 75.5 million
Minus Institutional Holdings: Approximately 87.17 million
Minus Insider Holdings: Approximately 61.46 million + Ryan Cohen's Holdings (36.847 million)
Adjusted Float Calculation: 306.19 million (Outstanding Shares) - 75.5 million (DRS) - 87.17 million (Institutional Holdings) - (61.46 million + 36.847 million) (Insider Holdings including Cohen's) = 45.213 million
Short Interest: 64.37 million shares
Theoretical MOASS Price Calculation
The theoretical price during a MOASS can vary widely based on the demand for shares and the willingness of retail investors to hold their positions. Here are a few scenarios to consider:
Scenario 1: Moderate Short Covering
- Assumption: Shorts begin covering at higher prices but still face resistance from retail holders.
- Estimated Price Range: $200 to $1,000 per share
Scenario 2: High Short Covering Pressure
- Assumption: Increased buying pressure as shorts are forced to cover more aggressively.
- Estimated Price Range: $1,000 to $5,000 per share
Scenario 3: Extreme MOASS Scenario
- Assumption: Significant short covering with extremely limited float due to strong retail holding.
- Estimated Price Range: $5,000 to $50,000+ per share
Important Considerations
- Regulatory Impact: Changes in regulations, such as those from the SEC or FINRA, could impact the dynamics of short selling and buying pressure.
- Market Sentiment: Market sentiment and external factors like news, earnings reports, and strategic announcements can significantly impact the stock price.
- Psychological Factors: The psychological impact on both retail investors and institutional players can lead to irrational price movements, either upwards or downwards.
Conclusion
Predicting the exact price during a MOASS is challenging due to the many variables involved. However, understanding the key factors and potential scenarios can provide a framework for what might happen. Stay informed, and always be cautious with your investments.

2024.05.21 22:08 New_to_Warwick Subreddit Rules and Etiquette; Come discuss about them so we have the most fair and justifiable rules on Reddit!
Hi!
I've been granted control of this subreddit and hope to make it a place where players from Infection Free Zone can come and share their gameplay, promote their stream and discords, talk about the game, learn about updates, tutorial, etc.
I wish for the community to grow with love, appreciation for the content and respect for each others.
To reach that goal, I've made this post to discuss with everyone interested, the rules and etiquette this subreddit should enforce.
I always thought that Moderators, from Reddit or Discord for example, were often lacking impartiality, devotion to the community and were too often abusing their powers to censors or spread their own opinions.
I want to ensure this community will not be moderated by such moderators, but will be moderated by impartial and respectful people, abiding by simple rules based around common sense.
Please, comment on this post with rules you think we should have publicly visible and enforce.
Thank you!

2024.05.21 22:04 Early_Recording_8316 Need help.
Hello. This will be long but I need help.
I have suffered from a low self esteem for as long as I can remember which has specially gotten worse in the last 3 years.
I’m the youngest of 4 siblings with loving parents and have had a nice environment at home overall. My siblings and I have a pretty big age gap so I will say that I always had two sets of parents hovering over me and trying to control me.
Academically I’ve always been slow. Never got good grades, was admitted into a pretty average university and never got to complete my undergrad degree because I had to start working.
You could say I’m street smart so I kicked off my career with a wonderful job (without a degree), gained experienced, got another amazing job and so on.
It was in 2021 that I had to leave my job as I was getting married and moving to a different city and then in 2022 to a different country where unfortunately I can neither study nor work due to my visa limitations.
This has brought a huge toll on me now. I look at my age fellows and see how much they’ve achieved in life and it makes me wonder why I was never able to do so. I find it difficult to make friends because I’m constantly worried about what they’ll think of me. If I say something dumb to somebody, I replay that scene in my mind over and over again thinking how I embarrassed myself. I don’t value my own thoughts, goals, or dreams and like to put myself in the backseat so other people can come forward, so much so that I left everything and moved to a different country only for my husband to fulfil his academic plans.
I am always trying to please people, always trying to get everyone’s validation, cannot set boundaries, I am afraid to ask for help because I think it will make me look weak, I don’t see a positive future for myself ever, I don’t like how I look physically now because I’ve completely lost my spark in the last 3 years.
I need help. I want to do something about this because now it has gotten to a point where it is affecting me in many more ways that I could have ever imagined.

2024.05.21 22:03 Curious_______George New male nurse
Hey guys I’m a new grad starting out in the ICU at a small hospital. I’ve been on orientation for 4 months now, but am extending it another month. My main preceptor that I was with had been telling me that I was doing just fine, and that I’d be ready to get off orientation.
Well… the other day I was working with a different preceptor, and she said that she and a couple other nurses think that I’m not doing great at all… apparently I’m “forgetting things I was already taught”, that “I don’t ask enough questions”, and that I have “false confidence”.
Tbh I don’t really understand what they meant by that, other than forgetting things. Maybe I’m oblivious to my quirks?
I tried explaining to them that I learn best by actually doing something.
For example, on nights we usually all stop what we are doing and help each other with a new admission. Due to this culture I actually suck at doing admissions because I’m used to just finding one task to do.
There are also a decent amount of skills that I’ve only ever done once or twice, and I’m being judged like I’ve done them several hundred times. My Achilles heel recently has been remembering what to do with heparin drips.
Don’t get me wrong, I am happy they said something. I just hate that no one spoke to me sooner. Instead they just continued to speak behind my back until a couple days before I was supposed to get off orientation…
What doesn’t help is that I’m the only male on my unit so it’s hard to make small talk and relate to them.
Anyone else have similar experiences? Any advice for this new, young male nurse?

2024.05.21 22:00 MadMedic21 Another Comprehensive Guide From a Caregiver and ACLr Recipient
Hi all! First off, so glad this sub reddit exists because it was a life saver when I was making decisions on my own ACLr and knowing what to expect from surgery. I'm a 2x cancer surviver, Paramedic, Rugby player, and now have been a caregiver to my partner who just celebrated 3 months from her own ACLr. I collected a bunch of advice and tips and tricks that I have used both during cancer treatment, my own experience with ACLr, and now through care taking my partner through hers. I know there have been guides before, but mine is a bit different and aimed at caregivers so I thought I'd post it here since ya'll helped me so much instead of it just circulating the rugby community every time a teammate or friend has to have ACLr or some other reconstruction. Hope it's allowed and helps!
A Cancer Patients Guide To Knee Reconstruction Recovery
A Comprehensive Guide To Surviving and Thriving In the Pre and Post-op Period Built From The Perspective of Caretaker and Patient.
Before The Date
__/__/____
Preparation
It is important to adequately prepare for surgery in the weeks and days leading up to the procedure. A significant period of immobility and reliance on support can be expected immediately post-op and will vary by procedure and personal experience. Physical modification of living space and thorough preparation allows for the immediate post-op period to be free of emergency store runs and the small inconveniences that can add up to big frustration. Not having food and drink nearby as well as other essentials may be a small deal now, but can turn into a big deal when you can no longer get those things for yourself. While physical preparation (home modifications, adaptive tools, meal prepping, etc.) are important, mental preparation is crucial to the long term success of the repair. Making small, achievable goals in the immediate post-op period and maintaining a long sighted view of recovery will make the pain and immobility that is initially experienced more bearable. Additionally, social support through a partner, family members, or friends is an essential part of recovery, as is maintaining contact with sports teams or other social groups during rehabilitation.
General PEARLs
- Pre-surgical rehab is an essential part of recovery and can improve immediate outcome so if it is a resource available to you- use it!
- Learn the basics of your procedure such as reconstruction technique, graft type, surgeons recovery timeline, where you will do your rehab, and what you should expect going into and coming out of surgery. Knowledge is power and can give a sense of control and set reasonable expectations in a situation that is otherwise out of your control.
- Seek out positive experiences and recovery stories from other people who have had your procedure and gather as much advice as possible from resources such as ACL. Know that some people will have negative experiences, everyone is an individual, and that much of your long term recovery is in your control.
- Expect and learn to advocate for yourself or the person you are taking care of. Be vocal and honest with any needs you may have and understand that issues may come up in the immediate post-operative time that you as a patient or caregiver may have to contact your surgeon to resolve. Familiarize yourself with who to call and when *before* you leave after surgery, as well as being quick to call with any questions or problems that arise. It is better to be told that what you are experiencing is normal than to sit with the anxiety of the unknown.
- Create a folder with all relevant information: Surgeons name, procedure information, follow-up appointment dates and times, phone numbers, emergency contacts, facility of choice in an emergency situation, and any other important information. Maintain this folder throughout your recovery and add paperwork as it comes.
Days Leading Up To Surgery
- Contact support people and confirm any arrangements that have been made including but not limited to: Who is taking you to/from surgery, child or pet care, transportation to first PT appointments, meals, etc.
- Recommended Items we found essential:
- Ice Machine (Polarcube, etc) if at all possible
- Recommend checking facebook marketplace or other second hand options, as they cost hundreds new but can be found for $40 or so used.
- Studies have shown these do actually reduce pain and lend to earlier mobilisation and our experience has shown this to be essential not just immediately post-op but in the weeks and months afterwards so if you *can* obtain one you absolutely should.
- Large sweatshirt and oversized shorts for surgery day, especially if you wear a bra, as putting clothes on after surgery can be a struggle and it’s easiest to just throw on a sweatshirt and shorts that fit over your post-op bandages and brace.
- In particular, we found a blanket hoodie to be very useful both for going home and the first few days as it could stay on when moving around/when napping.
- Neck Pillow
- Helps with reading or other activities during long hours spent in bed or on the couch and really helped in the first two days to prevent neck strain and provide head positioning during napping.
- Large pillows for body positioning and elevation of the leg
- We found cheap, giant, dog beds from places like TJ Max or Marshalls to be more affordable than specialty products
- A large, thin, dog bed (or blanket) rolled into a tube and secured with stretch bandage or tape around the surgical leg and brace helped significantly with comfort during sleep so that the leg was padded, comfortable, and the other leg didn’t get roughed up from the brace.
- A shower chair
- Can be found used at second hand stores like Goodwill, or cheap online
- Easy substitute is a chair covered in a trash bag
- Allowed showering the second day post-op which was a huge mental boost and relieved physical discomfort and achy muscles
- Extra large leg cast cover
- Can be found cheap online
- Placed around outside of brace covering the entire leg initially, we then found it easier to place on the leg and place the brace outside of the cover for the remaining healing period for the incisions: We did this after the first PT appointment when it was safe to take off the brace for short periods while laying down. We acquired a second post op brace from a friend (you can find on eBay for cheap) and it was amazing to have, as we could let it dry after showering and immediately put her post op brace back on.
- Foldable stool
- Great for elevating the leg during transfers, while on the toilet, etc.
- Lap Desk
- Great for eating on the couch or in bed, but we also found it useful as a side table for holding drinks/meds/remotes/books that could be taken to whatever room they landed in at the time
- A small table works as well, really just anything that can be used to set things on within arms reach
- Assortment of sodas, water, seltzers, snacks, etc.
- There is no way to know what you will want and when, but when you want it it’s nice to *have* it available
- Appetite often decreases after surgery so make sure to have favourites on hand so that when you *are* hungry you have it immediately before your body changes its mind
- A big bucket
- We used a soft plastic beach type bucket from the dollar store, it was extremely useful to have to put small items in, a small towel, a spare water bottle, extra meds, baby wipes, etc.
- Also doubled as an emergency puke bucket, as you never know when a sudden bout of nausea might hit in the first day or two after surgery
- Extra reusable ice packs and bags of ice
- Your home ice maker will not be able to keep up with the demands of constant icing the first week or so
- Reusable ones are great for ‘hot spots’ and short trips where you can’t take the ice machine
- Extra steri-strips and assortment of bandages
- Sometimes there’s extra leakage, sometimes your steri-strips come off and you need to slap a new one on, sometimes you’re allergic to the ones they put on you at the hospital. Always consult a medical professional, but it’s handy to have these on hand just in case.
- We also used a bulky padded bandaid to keep the brace off the healing incisions once the large post-op dressing was taken off which helped immensely.
- Compression sleeves
- Aside from helping with swelling these also provided a layer of protection under the post-op brace
- We found cheap ones at Wal-Mart (copper brand) but also just bought a cheap pair of leggings a size down and cut off one of the legs to use before getting a more expensive one once swelling had fully subsided after a few weeks. Your leg will change so cheap works great at first, then you can get something a bit more substantial when you know what you’ll need long term. Now she wears high compression socks to sleep 3 months out.
- Slide on shoes
- Self explanatory, bending down to put on shoes becomes a chore after surgery. Avoid flip flops or other styles that can become a trip hazard.
- Baby Wipes/Dude Wipes/etc.
- Wiping down after you get home from surgery can help prevent that icky feeling and restore some sense of normalcy, then can be used over the next few days before you can shower more normally
- Lotion and chapstick
- Hospitals dry out your skin big time, and lips are often cracked post surgery from intubation/LMA placement
- Small, easily labelled tupperware containers
- Regular pill containers are too small to hold pain meds, OTC pain meds, anticoagulants such as aspirin, supplements, and edibles or other small things you take with your medication. We got small tupperware boxes with lids from the dollar store.
- We found it very convenient to have six sets of meds set up and labelled with times which meant we never missed doses and could leave the next dose of meds at bedside, take them with us when going to appointments, and keep up with what had been given and when.
- Small notebook to record med times and other important information
- Two extra changes of clothes already setup and ready to go
- Compression device
- We are athletes so we already had leg compression sleeves but these days off brand versions can be bought online cheap. Studies have shown these lead to reduced pain, increased mobilisation, reduced the chance of blood clots, and there is even some evidence they help with bone healing.
- We used it 3 days post op and beyond and her range of motion was significantly improved after the first time.
- A yoga strap
- Excellent for strapping to the brace and moving the surgical leg
- If possible, pick up post-op medications prior to surgery to prevent any unexpected delay in obtaining them. If this is not possible, verify that the prescription can be filled the day of the surgery by your selected pharmacy and that it has been filled prior to leaving after your surgery. Controlled substances cannot be transferred to another pharmacy without a new prescription sent directly from the provider. You do not want to be trying to get in contact with a physician in the hours after surgery, unable to manage pain, before the pharmacies close for the night.
- Do a thorough clean of your living area, it will make the time after surgery when you cannot independently do normal activities more bearable and a neat organised space is easier to function in when your body is not cooperating. Take special attention to removing tripping hazards and clearing a wide path from wherever you plan to spend your recovery and the bathroom.
- Plan to spend the first couple of days in one spot and on one floor and set up that area the day before surgery. If you have a downstairs bathroom a floor mattress or well setup couch can be your landing pad until you are more mobile and is the easiest during the immediate post-op period. That being said, if you don’t, it’s easier to get upstairs by sliding up on your bum immediately post-op when your pain is still well controlled than realise that you have no bathroom downstairs a few hours later when the pain has started to set in. Wherever you intend to land, plan on staying there at least a couple of days and bring all your supplies to that area. Plan to lay with your surgical leg on the outside of what you are laying on, this makes transferring easier.
- Have your recovery bed setup the day before surgery and prepared for when you return before you leave the day of, including blankets and your supply table setup.
- Meal prep, whether that means cooking or getting easy to make microwave meals is up to you. You won’t feel like cooking and neither will your caretaker the first few days. High protein, easy to eat meals are key! We had chicken and broccoli casserole, egg and sausage frittata, and lots of applesauce the first few days and it was a lifesaver not to have to think about meals.
- Spend some time mentally preparing for the long haul of recovery and make long term plans that fit within your timeline. For example, we planned to attend a rugby game five days after surgery *but* planned nothing else for that day and the next day. We also planned hiking trips the next fall, and other events appropriate for her timeline along the way that could be looked forward to and keep up morale. Remember that this is temporary and that it is okay to be recovering and resting, expect hard moments and days but keep things planned so you don’t get stuck in those down places.
- Eat your favourite meal and eat well the day before surgery. Your body needs fuel to recover and fasting the day of surgery sucks. As weird as it sounds, after multiple surgeries, the pre-surgery night meal of whatever I want is one shiny thing in a crappy situation to hold on to.
- Plan for what you want your first meal to be and consider making a playlist for the ride to and from surgery. Small things, again, help maintain a sense of control and comfort in a situation where you are largely out of control and these things can be done with friends or support people in the days leading up to reduce anxiety and pass time.
- Hit the gym, take a walk, do a hike, visit places or do things you enjoy but won’t be able to do in immediate recovery! We took my partners knee to one last tournament before her surgery, it helped pass time and kept spirits high.
Day Of And Immediate Post-Surgery Phase
- Maintain fasting starting at whatever hour you are told. Some people can drink clear liquids up to a certain point, others are completely nothing by mouth. Your instructions will guide you on this.
- Before leaving home double check that everything is set up how you need it and place a blanket, pillow, drink, and snack of choice in the car. You may or may not need it but if you do it is important to have. Make sure your ice packs are in the freezer ready to go!
- Bring your own post-op snack if you are picky or have food allergies, otherwise you’re stuck with whatever graham cracker and applesauce combo the facility gives you.
- Go with the flow, or as I always say “surrender”. Feel what you feel, have a cry in the car before you go in, listen to your playlist, bring your blanket or other comfort items into pre-op, tell your support person what’s going through your mind, tell your pre-op staff how you’re doing, ask all the questions, and most importantly just do what you have to do. For some people surgery can be overwhelming and the loss of control frightening, but fighting only makes it worse, so whatever you are just be it. I’m pre-op pacer myself, but some people just snuggle up under some warm blankets and wait. Either way, just let the waves take you where they go and know you’re along for the ride. Remember that future you with a healthy joint thanks you for what you’re doing today.
- Speak frankly with your anesthesiologist and utilise any pain control or anxiety control options given to you. There is no award for least meds taken or toughest patient of the day. If a nerve block is available, know that you can request sedation for its placement, and utilise that option if at all possible.
- Caregivers should bring something to keep them entertained and be prepared for a long period without update once surgery has started. Honour your feelings as well, it can be tough to watch someone you care about go through this! Consider having someone to act as a support person for you as well through text or phone, that way you can divert your own worries or struggles to them and away from the person having surgery while still making sure you are also taken care of.
- Make sure that pain is well controlled before leaving after surgery. You have more options there than you will at home and getting things under control once pain has become unbearable can be very difficult.
- Make sure you note when the next dose of medication is due, what medication they should be taking, and write it down.
- Double check contacts from your surgeons office and add any post op paperwork to your folder in case you need the information later.
- If your post-op meal requires picking up, or your prescription, try and do that immediately after leaving surgery even if you are not hungry yet. This is the most comfortable you will be for a while and your support person will be unable to leave for at least that day and night. I have been known to peruse the big gas station after surgery in search of snacks, my partner however simply waved to the nice people at the drive through and napped the rest of the way home before eating some hours later.
- Once you get home crash wherever you plan on spending the rest of the time. Don’t have friends or family over that first day. Just go ahead and sleep through the rest of the anaesthesia and get comfortable.
- Try and keep your home cool, and consider keeping the room dim for the first few hours if not days. Sleep is precious and pain meds can make you hot, and getting hot can lead to nausea. It is better to have the home cool and the person snuggled under blankets and comfortable than be trying to cool someone down who just had surgery and got too hot and is now dizzy, nauseous, and miserable. The least stimulation for the first little while the better, and naps will happen throughout the rest of the day and over the next few days. A cool, dim place lets this happen much easier than a bright, warm place where they might be overstimulated or awakened by noise or activity.
- If allowed, try and activate the quad muscle immediately after returning home and once every few hours by having them squeeze it and feeling for contraction while in the brace. Some people will be able to begin range of motion exercises immediately and if so, make sure to do them as soon as allowed even if that means just helping them by doing gentle manual range of motion movements in the brace.
- If it’s not already on, begin continuous icing as soon as you come out of surgery either by meticulously timing the replacement of ice packs or with the ice machine. Make sure to check the ice machine, replace ice as often as needed, and keep it on *continuously* for the next few days. For us this meant I checked it at every medication dose throughout the night and added ice during that time as well. We went through frozen mini water bottles and bags of ice like crazy the first week.
- Elevate the surgical leg as high as possible, placing support under the heel and calf but not directly under the knee to promote extension and prevent more headaches with gaining range of motion later on.
- We found that icepacks directly under the knee helped tremendously with the discomfort associated with this.
- Anticipate that bathroom trips will not be fun or easy and take them extremely slow. As a caregiver allow the person to guide you on what they need and don’t need your help with and avoid grabbing or moving someone unexpectedly. Standing, acclimating to being upright, and then proceeding to the bathroom is the best way to do things and rushing will only result in frustration for both of you. A rolling chair or wheelchair can be helpful, but for some people standing up and sitting down is harder than just moving on to the bathroom. Pay attention as a caregiver and know that it is possible they may need your help getting off the toilet or back from the bathroom so be close by and available should that happen. For the first few days do not lock the bathroom door in case of an emergency.
- Place chairs or things to sit on around your path to the bathroom, kitchen, etc. And consider a small backpack or using a rolling chair to carry items around the house.
- Once you know when your next dose is, set alarms for each time your doses are due. If using the med boxes this makes doing meds and keeping track very easy, as they are each labelled with a time and all we had to do was open the box and take the meds instead of finding each bottle and dosing each med individually each time. As the days went on we were able to re-label and time the boxes as needed and remove meds as needed or adapt to what was needed when sleeping or up during the day.
- For example day 1 would look like:
- First post-op doses at 4pm box: 250mg tylenol, 10mg oxycodone, 5mg edible.
- 8pm box: 250mg tylenol, 10mg oxycodone, 800mg ibuprofen, 10mg edible, 12.5mg diphenhydramine (itching and sleep), stool softener, and regular night time meds.
- Midnight box: 250mg tylenol, 5mg oxycodone, 5mg edible.
- 4AM: 250mg tylenol, 5mg oxycodone, 800mg ibuprofen, edible (if nauseas or restless).
- 8AM box (preparing to get up): 250mg tylenol, 10mg oxycodone, 5mg edible, aspirin, stool softener, normal morning meds.
- 12pm: 250mg tylenol, 10mg oxycodone, 5mg edible, 800mg ibuprofen.
- Repeated on time, reducing pain med dose as tolerable, and refilling boxes 1x a day.
- If possible do scheduled tylenol (paracetamol) and ibuprofen (or another NSAID), alternating them on the dosing schedule, and take them religiously even through the night. This also goes for additional pain medications, which you will also need to wake to take through the night if you are prescribed for at least the first night.
- Staying on schedule might mean waking up in the night, but it’s better to be awoken to take meds than to wake up in pain and spend several hours trying to get it under control. You may find you seldom need them if your nerve block is in place, or you may just not need very much at all during your recovery. It is easier to trial run this after the first day by stretching out the time between doses from 4 to 6 to 8 and then potentially off entirely, but everyone will have their preferences.
- Eat a small snack with every med dose and keep emergency meds (extra pain med doses, nausea meds, etc.) at bedside as well as the next set of meds due so they can be taken when it is time.
- We found that edibles were a great addition to pain and nausea control after surgery. There are medication options available and having at least one option for nausea is advisable for the first few days after surgery when anaesthesia and medication can really make you want to puke.
- Expect absolutely nothing in the first few days post-op. Some people will feel well enough to move around, others will not be able to do anything but get up to use the bathroom. Expecting nothing is better than expecting more and being disappointed or frustrated. I would highly suggest not making plans until your first follow up 7 or so days after surgery.
- Be obsessive about icing, meds, any PT you have been given, and keeping track of appointments. Give yourself the best start to your recovery that you can and you will thank yourself later!

I notice there is a lot of talk about cross international dating (ex: passport bros) on this subreddit and the manosphere at large. I thought it would be interesting to share this study by a Swedish researcher named, Annika Elwert, who has studied gendered differences in foreign mate preferences between men and women in western countries.
The three countries she’s mainly studied are her home country Sweden, Spain and the USA by analyzing data on natives with foreign spouses. This what she found in Sweden for example regarding changes in patterns in cross national marriages:
Until the turn of the millennium, Swedish men who married across national borders usually chose women from Norway and Finland. In the early 2000s, a change in men's marriage patterns crystallised. Partly because of increased international travel, Thai women became the most common group of foreign women to marry Swedish men. However, Swedish women are rarely in relationships with Thai men.
In 2023 Elwert published a study focusing on Spain and USA to see if these patterns hold. She found some interesting differences and similarities between men and women when it came to choosing a foreign spouse that I thought were worth sharing.
Just a heads up, before I delve deeper into the study, I should note the researchers for this study only looked at marriages between natives in the USA who were of non-Hispanic European heritage and those with two parents born in Spain, to foreigners. So large swaths of the population are being left out of this study as it only examines foreign spouse preferences for certain members of the native population not the entire. Just keep that in mind:
We restrict the native population to the non-Hispanic of European descent born in the United States. Similarly for Spain, we restrict the native population to people born in Spain whose parents are also born in Spain. These restrictions are intended to minimize the impact that cross-national couples between international migrants and descendants of migrants of the same origins might have in our analyses (ex. Mexicans in the United States or Moroccans in Spain).
Regardless, I thought the results would interesting to discuss, here is a summary of the most important findings:
Sociologist Annika Elwert has previously studied marriage patterns in Sweden and, in a recent article, examined statistical databases of Spanish and American men and women who have a foreign partner. Their marriage patterns are similar to those of Swedes.
In the US, it is common to have a partner from neighbouring countries or Europe, but many American men also have a partner or wife from the Philippines. However, American women rarely marry Filipino men, preferring Germans and Mexicans. Among Spaniards, marriages with people from France, Germany and Argentina are common. Spanish women also choose partners from Senegal and Morocco, which is rare among Spanish men. Statistically, they prefer women from Romania and Colombia.
Although there are many commonalities in the marriage patterns of men and women, differences remain. Men more often marry much younger women from countries with lower education and living standards. The general trend is that the greater the difference in development between countries, the greater the age difference between the native man and the foreign woman. If the women come from countries with a similar level of development, the age difference is comparatively small.
“It is difficult to say why this is the case. One possible explanation is that when men have a preference for much younger women, it can be challenging to realise this preference in the domestic marriage market. It may be easier if she comes from a less developed country, where, for example, the marital age gap is usually larger," says Annika Elwert.
The same phenomenon is visible when considering countries' gender equality. Men from Spain or the US are more likely to marry partners from countries with low gender equality. In contrast, Spanish and American women rarely marry men from countries with low gender equality. An exception is American women. They are often in relationships with Mexican men.
So native men are more likely to marry foreign spouse from a less developed countries in places like SEA, Latin America, Eastern Europe, while native women are more likely to marry someone from developed countries and Western Europe. However, this trend changes depending on the region, with native women in Europe being more likely to marry someone from Africa and the Middle East compared to their male counterparts for example.
Native men are also more likely to be in relationships with a larger age gap compared to native women, although there has been slight increase in the latter:
When women from the US or Spain marry foreign men, the age difference is generally small. However, Annika Elwert's research shows that it has become more common for Swedish and Spanish women to have younger partners from less developed countries. This is not the case among American women.
Here is the full summary of the study:
https://www.soc.lu.se/en/article/women-and-men-show-more-similarities-when-choosing-foreign-partner Here is the full study which has more details and graphs:
Read the article published in Population and Development Review My basic summary of the studies is:
European men (Spain and Sweden), tend to marry partners from Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, with notable gender disparities seen in marriages with Russian/Latin American women in Spain and largest age gaps in marriages with African women. European women from these countries are more likely to marry partners from neighboring regions, Western Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, with significant gender disparities observed in marriages with men from Africa. While European women are much less likely to marry younger partners from developing countries, there's a slight uptick in such unions, (particularly with Eastern European men interestingly enough), although this trend isn't mirrored in the US despite US women being more likely to marry men from developing countries then their European counterparts.
In the US, similarities exist between native men and European men in terms of marrying partners from Asia and Eastern Europe, with pronounced gender disparities seen in marriages with partners from Asia and age gaps being the largest with SEA Asian women and Certain Eastern European countries (Russia/Ukraine). US women are more likely to marry partners from Lebanon, Turkey, and India. Interestingly, there's less of a gender gap in marrying partners from Latin America in the US, although preferences vary by individual countries within Latin America. Native US men are more likely to marry someone from Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, El Salvador and Peru while native US women are more likely to marry someone from Mexico, The Caribbean, Jamaica, Cuba, Guatemala, Panama and Argentina.
Regarding, developed countries, US women are slightly more likely to marry partners from Western Europe and Canada, while US men are more likely marry partners from East Asia.
Anyways, are there any surprises by the study's results? Or did it confirm something’s you already suspected?
