ADRENOCHROME OSCARS: WHITE HATS had INFILTRATED A ACADEMY AWARDS CEREMONY in HOPES OF ARRESTING a FEW CRIMINAL HOLLYWOOD ELITISTS. But THEY ABORTED aborted THE PLAN, due to an OVERWELMING SECURITY PRESENC that OUTNUMBERED them 100-1. DESPITE the HINDRANCE, they still obtained a USEFUL but DISTURBING KNOWLEDGE: The TENUOUS WAR AGAINST ADRENOCHROME PEDDLERS has yet to BE WON. March 14, 2024.
White Hats had infiltrated Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony in hopes of arresting a few criminal Hollywood elitists. But they aborted the plan due to an overwhelming security presence that outnumbered them 100-1. Despite the hindrance, they still obtained a useful but disturbing bit of knowledge: The tenuous war against Adrenochrome peddlers has yet to be won.
Part biologic, part synthetic, the potent narcotic is to the elite what heroin and fentanyl are to the homeless addicts encamped in the streets of San Francisco and Portland: an addictive fix. Whereas a fentanyl tab might cost a druggie three dollars, an Adrenochrome injection or infusion costs thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, based on the purity of the product. And prices continue to skyrocket as entities like the White Hats and Vladimir Putin wage war on Adrenochrome production and distribution networks in the U.S. and Eastern Europe, respectively, creating scarcity and an accompanying price surge—the laws of economics. But those disruptions didn’t stop some Oscar nominees from receiving a free sample.
A source at General Smith’s office told Real Raw News that White Hat investigators surreptitiously accessed the Academy Awards and saw certain nominees receive a jumbo gift bag, distinct from the $168,000 prize bags given to every nominee by the Luciferian Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Like the Willy Wonka Bars in Ronald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, certain gift bags held something golden. But instead of a golden ticket, these bags held a golden box about the size and shape of an eyeglass case, which contained a syringe of Adrenochrome.
Cillian Murphy’s bag had the injection, as did actress Lilly Gladstone’s sack.
At one point in the evening, Gladstone reached inside the bag for the gold case. But her Killers Flowers of the Flower Moon co-star, Robert De Niro, looked at her askance and laid his hand atop hers, pushing the case back into the gift bag. He shook his head in disapproval and whispered in her ear.
According to our source, the investigators also witnessed Cillian Murphy holding and then opening the gold case in a restroom, where a half-dozen other actors were snorting lines and giggling up a storm. Murphy asked an unidentified actor what the syringe held and was told, “It’ll take you to another planet, but that’s not for here. It’s for the latter.” Taped to the case was a label that read, “Do not open at ceremony.”
Murphy ignored the warning out of curiosity. Still, he nodded slowly, returned the case to the bag, and left the restroom.
By then, the investigators believed beyond reasonable double the syringes had Adrenochrome, and they suspected that someone at the Oscars had distributed it to celebrities who hadn’t yet taken the instantly addictive pharmaceutical cocktail.
“CID noticed that a handful of bags had a red bow, and they assumed those had the Adrenochrome. The addicted were trying to indoctrinate greenhorns into the ways of Adrenochrome. Even though they had backup nearby, the security there was immense—we’re talking about guys with submachine guns concealed beneath their jackets, and Lord knows what else. Mass arrests were out of the question. But CID wanted to get their hands on a syringe so we could chemically analyze it and possibly determine where it was made,” our source said.
Toward the end of the evening, the investigators cashed in on a hunch; they found an empty syringe in a bathroom trash can. Some Adrenochrome recipients had disobeyed the cautionary memo and injected themselves.
Although no arrests were made, White Hats found enough residue in the depleted syringe to run a chemical analysis. They believe the Adrenochrome came from Ukraine, meaning Putin has yet to bomb them out of existence entirely, and the Deep State is still importing it from Zelenskyy’s Adrenochrome mills.
“We still think that’ll be helpful,” our source said. “It may help isolate a specific lab.”

2024.05.21 11:07 CringeyVal0451 Maple Walnut Pie

Kadillac Kirk had been a good friend of mine for several years. I had met him through friends from The Spring Stage; and he never had anything to do with The Imp, which is why he didn’t appear in the Married Mary saga. Mary would have totally thrown herself at him, and Kirk would have definitely “thrown it in her.” He loved the ladies and often remarked that there was no such thing as an unappealing woman, nor was there anything sweeter than finding the pearl of passion in an outwardly plain dame. Fortunately for Kirk, he never met Mary. This was probably fortunate for Mary as well, seeing as Kirk was a confirmed bachelor and his rakish nature might have broken her fat heart.
Kirk was an older guy. Not MOE old, though. He was in his early forties, but he easily passed for a carefree dude in his 30s... not that he lied about his age. I only mention this trait to juxtapose Kirk’s genuine youthful air with Moe’s unconvincing youthful farce. Kirk dressed normally, avoided stupid jargon, and never busted out gimmicks like tarot cards or spells. He just existed, behaved affably, and people liked him for it.
He drove a classic 1962 Cadillac El Dorado convertible with red leather interior, and he lived in a charmingly quaint (and ridiculously expensive) neighborhood. How he made his fortune remained a mystery, but he never bloviated about his wealth. He just threw spectacular parties and people showed up. And, to my knowledge, he never tried to lure women into bed with his money (although I’m sure he got his fair share of boom-boom thanks to his digs and his wheels, even if the gold-diggers denied their monetary agendas).
Kirk was legitimately handsome. He was a drummer, he had a full head of black hair, he was clean-shaven, he worked out, and he knew all the hidden gems in Wellsprings. So why hadn’t I tried... or even desired to date him? I don’t know. I just didn’t feel drawn to him like that. He felt like a cool uncle and he had, thus far, never done anything to change my perception. Plus, the age difference weirded me out a little. Kirk didn’t look forty; but knowing that he had so much more life experience than I did created a power imbalance that would have creeped me out if we’d been dating. As buddies, I just felt supremely cool riding in his Cadillac, smoking Fantasia cigarettes, and hitting the speakeasies and jazz clubs I would have never known about if it weren’t for Kirk’s connections.
And he had been a good person to talk to about my romantic woes. He never lecherously suggested that I should date him, and he gave the type of tempered advice that only comes with lived experience. But he often lightly mocked me for my crush on Dennis and he did a hilarious impression of Smegal popping too soon over his “precious.” So when Mary “got me back” by doing whatever she did with to Dennis, I called Kadillac Kirk and told him the drinks were on me if he’d be my designated driver for the night.
Why hadn’t I called Whisky??? Well, A) Kirk was way more fun to hang out with, at least from my past experiences up to that point. And B) I needed to bitch about a boy, something I couldn’t do in good conscience in front of a guy I was dating. So I put on the sexiest plunging halter dress I owned, applied heavy eye makeup and spikey accessories, braved a pair of stilettos, and sashayed out to Kirk’s convertible. I felt like a badass rock star. I probably looked like a try-hard hooker.
Kirk: Daaaaay-um! Somebody really did do a number on you, huh? I know you said you were upset, but the gents are gonna be writing thank you notes to that fat girl and that butt-fucking hobbit.
Me: I just need to feel pretty and numb. And I trust you to keep me from making a fool of myself.
Kirk squeezed my shoulder. “I’ve got you. You do whatever you need to do to get rid of these demons.”
He sparked up a J and offered me the first puff. I gladly accepted. He took one puff of his own, but said that the rest was mine since he didn’t want to drive stoned. See? He was responsible! Weed wasn’t legal in California yet, so I got a little bit baked before I stashed the sativa in the glove box and wrapped a scarf around my hair like a starlet from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Kirk sped out of the parking lot and said he was taking me to a downtown hotel that was hosting a party that night in their lush lobby.
Kadillac Kirk pulled up to the main entrance, paid the valet, and then opened my door. I was wobbly from the weed. And I had stupidly decided to wear heels. You can get high or you can wear high (heels). You can’t have both. Not if you’ve repeatedly injured both ankles (as I have). I had to take Kirk’s arm to keep from keeling over. “Can people tell I’m stoned?” I whispered. Kirk replied, “Nobody’s paying any attention to anyone else’s intoxication. I promise you that much.” I nodded, steadied myself, and strutted alongside my very cool friend, feeling a little more confident.
A live jazz orchestra was playing Cole Porter as we entered the lobby. Everything sparkled. The music was even more intoxicating than the spliff had been. “Just One of Those Things” brought tears to my eyes since the lyrics hit every raw nerve regarding the Dennis debacle. But I smiled. It might sound mental, but being distraught over a trash fire of a one-sided romance was exhilarating. Immature, for sure. But also exhilarating. You see, that kind of sadness doesn’t hurt. Not really. It stings. It leaves little bruises, but it’s very safe to wallow in because you haven’t actually lost anything. Melancholia over that which you never had is as sweet as it is bitter; and that type of twisted splendor is rivaled only by Stendhal.
“Here's hoping we meet now and then. It was great fun, but it was just one of those things.” I sang along with the band, and a fat tear rolled down past my melancholic smile and onto my chin. Kirk brushed it aside. “Too close to home?” I wiped away the remnants of the tear’s journey from eye to chin and smiled a more genuine smile. “The perfect distance from home. Shall we get drinks? Remember, I’m buying.”
Kirk: No, no. This is your time to heal. And I’m here as your pal, not your chauffeur. What would the lady like?”
I pretended to barf. Kirk knew I hated it when he got overly formal and overly attentive. So he did it just to mess with me. “Shot of vodka,” I replied.
Kirk: How many?
I thought briefly. “FIVE.”
Kirk: Five to one, baby. One in five...
Me: No one here gets out alive.
Kirk: Are you able to hold yourself upright, or should you come with?
I took a seat on an ornate, damask-upholstered chaise lounge. “I’ll be okay. And I was kidding about the five shots.”
I sat there lost in the music for a while. I thought very little about Dennis. Even less about Mary. And not at all about Whisky (whom I had shagged less than a week ago). My mind danced through the ornate lighting in the hotel lobby, and I suddenly felt the need to join the hoity-toity guests on the dancefloor!
Kirk returned with four shots of vodka. Two for him, two for me. That was quite reasonable of him. He knew damn well that I couldn’t handle five shots, but he also knew that I was in a... state. One that called for more than a single shot. I raised a both miniature glasses to “No more ninnyhammers or hairy-footed lovers.” Kirk did his hilarious Smegal impression, we double-toasted, and downed the shots. The band launched into “Let’s Misbehave,” and I kicked off my stilettos and made a beeline for the dance floor.
“There’s something wild about you child that’s so contagious. Let’s be outrageous! Let’s misbehave.” Kadillac Kirk swept me up, twirled me around, and dipped me as we both sang along with the lyrics. I wasn’t swooning for him, but I was enthralled by the moment. The music, the dancing, the combination of booze and bud... so I kissed him as he pulled me back to my feet. And he kissed back. In a way that Dennis never had. In a way that Whisky’s beard wouldn’t permit. I didn’t feel the visceral sensations that I’d felt when Dennis had kissed me, but it felt nice to feel desired. And then I noticed that other guests were watching us and applauding. Now, that was a dopamine rush if ever there was one!
I gently broke away from the embrace, high-fived Kirk and returned to the chaise lounge to put my stupid shoes back on. He followed me and smashed his face back onto mine. I pulled away and laughed. “It was a moment,” I told him. “I appreciate the dance, and that kiss was the perfect finale. But it’s not happening again.”
Kirk: Not to worry, Valerie. I know you. I knew all along that we were performing, and I was more than happy to be your scene partner.
Me: And dance partner! Those were some excellent moves! I didn’t know you had ballroom training.
Kirk: You name it, I’ve mastered it. Another drink for the lady?
I pretended to barf again. “Not yet. I’m not sad right now. Do you mind if I just sit here and enjoy the music?”
Kirk: Ah. My kisses do have healing properties...
I flipped my hand up at him. “Knock that shit off, bro. I wanted to hang out with you because I trust you not to get weird. Even if I get weird, I know you have the maturity to balance me out.”
Kirk: Are you calling me old???
Me: No. I’m calling you rational, responsible, and respectful.
Kirk: Well, now. If you can articulate an alliterative statement that fluently, then you clearly aren’t drunk enough!
I dismissed this comment as a joke. And he did indeed knock off the flirtation. We had a perfectly pleasant time chatting and dancing (no more kissing, though). And then I noticed a girl I knew from Into the Woods entering the lobby. She’d played Florinda and I’d played Little Red. I called her name and waved enthusiastically. She waved back. And then her date entered. It was D.E.N.N.I.S. I sank into the chaise. Kirk caught on immediately. “The hobbit???” he asked. I nodded silently. “You wanna make out again?” he enthused. I shook my head. I had to go say hello to Flo. And I had an idea...
I crossed the lobby, smiled, squealed, and hugged her.
Florinda: Lil’ Red! It’s been forever! So glad to see you!!! This is my friend, Denny.
From the corner of my eye. I could see Dennis shifting uncomfortably. I refused to look directly at him, neglected to acknowledge Flo's introduction and continued to converse only with her. "So glad to see you, too! What have you been up to since we left the woods?"
Dennis: C’mon, Val...
Florinda (appearing oblivious to the iciness between me and Dennis): Oh, I had some drama after the show closed. I'll have to tell you about it some other time... Have you seen Prince Big Bad (Scumbanger) lately?
I laughed. “Last time I saw him, he was hitting on some nasty fat chick at The Imp.”
Flo and I both scoffed at the pervy pest. Into the Woods was where I’d initially met Scumbanger. He played The Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince. Again... typecasting. There’s a whole essay in my brain about my first encounter with the pest, during which he quoted the song that he sang to me in the show, “Hello, Little Girl.” But it gets into some pretty uncomfortable territory because he made me feel... excited. Well, excited and scared. Nothing of note happened during Into the Woods, but our odd interactions did kind of set the stage for some extremely regrettable events during that Cats cast party.
I excused myself, saying that I needed to get back to my friend. And then I leaned in and said in a hushed voice to Flo, “Watch your ass with that one. If he’s the Denny I’m thinking of...” I gave her a look that only another female would be able to read. Her eyebrows shot up and she nodded. Dennis continued to shift as though he were trying to hold in a massive dump. “BABE! Uh...”
Flo apparently answered to that moniker as well. “What is it, Denny? Don’t worry. That was just telepathic girl talk. You apparently have a reputation...”
Dennis: Different Denny. I assure you I’m a pious gentleman.
Me: Ah. My mistake. Well, then. You guys have a good time! They’re playing Cole Porter, and the band is delovely. Great to see you, Flo!
I hugged Flo again, gave Dennis a curt nod, ignored the scent of mandarins and mountain air, and returned to Kirk.
I collapsed on the chaise lounge, exhausted from holding back the rage. I had no right to be mad at Florinda. I hadn’t seen her in three years, so how was she supposed to know that I’d had a thing with Dennis? Hell, I couldn’t even be mad at Dennis because the last time he and I had spoken in any meaningful way, I’d told him that I was no longer entertaining my crush on him. So why was I surprised to see him dating??? And why had he never taken ME out on a date like this??? And why wasn’t I smitten with Kadillac Kirk who HAD taken me out on a date like this, was an objectively excellent kisser, and a bona fide BALLER? What was wrong with me???
Kirk suggested going down the street to a quaint little bar and then sobering up at a diner closer to my apartment. I numbly nodded and followed him in silence for a few blocks. He assured me that I had “turned several heads” on the way to the new location, but I neither cared nor believed him. This wasn't the type of numbness I'd been aiming for. Now I needed to get schnockered. “Five shots of vodka, please.” Yes, I was serious.
Kadillac Kirk, my reliable designated driver, ordered only a beer and watched in something across between astonishment, concern, and delight as I slammed all five shots in rapid succession. I half expected to immediately retch all over the bar. But I felt fine. I half expected to immediately lose consciousness and wake up in the hospital. But I remained coherent. How I’d managed to take in that much hard liquor and suffer no direct consequences, I’ll never know.
I think I wanted to suffer. I wanted to either feel nothing at all or to feel a sickness bad enough to distract me from the scorching sting that pulsed through my being when I realized that I had lost the abstract notion I’d been addicted to this entire time. Hope. It wasn’t Dennis himself I couldn’t quit. It was that drug called hope. The hope that maybe, just maybe Dennis would give our romance a fair chance. The hope that maybe, just maybe he would make peace with himself, get his mind out of his crotch, and enjoy some agenda-free togetherness. The hope that maybe, just maybe he would stop bloviating about his admittedly impressive accomplishments for five fucking minutes and ask about my life. I had my own reasonably impressive accomplishments, even if they paled in comparison to his. A proper suitor would have enjoyed hearing about them.
But seeing him out with another woman, a woman who had no reason to parade her Dennis escapades before me as some means of revenge, a woman he was clearly courting of his own volition... My hope had died. It died before I’d had time to wean myself off it. Now I had to mourn the loss of hope, which is a very tricky brand of grief to navigate. Vodka wasn’t the answer, but it was what I had to work with. So it would have to do.
After enough time had passed without vomiting or collapsing, I asked Kirk to bring his car around to the bar so that I didn’t have to walk two and a half blocks drunk and in heels. He nodded and dramatically leaned in for a kiss. I recoiled. “DUDE! I told you. The moment has passed.”
Kirk: I beg your pardon. I misread your eyes. Thought I saw a green light...
Me: It’s fine. I just want to go home while I’m still feeling okay.
Kirk: Of course. Your chariot will be here soon.
He skipped off to fetch his Cadillac and I noticed that the lights in the bar were beginning to dance a bit. This should have been concerning. But then I realized that I was giggling. Wait... What? Oh shit. Sure, I was drunk from those shots. But what I was feeling in that moment wasn’t drunkery. It was stonery. Kirk probably misread my face because my pupils were dilated. Not from desire, but from drug use.
Some of you might be thinking that I was a bad friend for not introducing Lucy, an old dude connoisseur, to Kirk. Well... I did. Several years before the events of this story. He adored her. She, on the other hand, thought he was immature. And she wasn’t wrong. Lucy was astute when it came to sussing out a person’s true nature. Far more astute than I. Her initial assessment that Kirk was immature is about to be vindicated. Stretch those cringe muscles! It’s almost time for pie...
I somehow managed to get to his car. I honestly don’t recall how I got there. Did one of the bartenders carry me? Did some kind patron allow me to lean on him? Had Kadillac Kirk carried me out? I’m not sure. But my memory ceases to be fuzzy about halfway to the 24-hour diner. It might have been the very same 24-hour diner where Mary pulled her... shenanigans. I’ll never know.
Kirk: Would you say that you’re more drunk or more stoned?
Me: STONED. Definitely stoned.
Kirk made some sort of grunty noise and reached for my thigh. I slapped his hand.
Kirk: Stoned but not amorous? That’s rare.
I started laughing rather unkindly. “You’re a fucking horndog! I thought you were my safe straight male friend, dammit.”
Kirk: I solemnly swear that your safety is my primary concern, my stoned beauty.
I pretended to throw up.
Kirk: So... You’re not horny. But are you hungry? The diner I’m heading to makes this Maple Walnut Pie with the most sumptuous... sensual cream and exquisite drizzling of...
Me: Ew! Stop trying to bang the pie. Bro. Are YOU stoned? (Then I remembered the question.) Yes, I’m hungry. But I don’t like nuts. I’ll have banana cream.
Kirk made that repulsive grunty noise again. “Uhhhhh... Mmmmmm. Cream. Yessssss. Yes, we’ll be there in just a minute.” He was squirming in the driver's seat.
Me: GROSS, DUDE! If you’re gonna be like that I’ll just order HASH brows. Get it? Hash??? (I giggled.) You can’t make that sound nasty.
Kirk: Forgive my jokes. I think my blood sugar’s a bit low.
As Kirk parked, I began to wonder how I might get away with walking shoeless into the diner. The stilettos had to get off my feet. At least while I was walking. And Kirk was kind enough to give me his socks and wear his loafers “island style” into the establishment. Okay, that was gallant of him. Maybe he was going to behave himself for the rest of the evening.
I wasn’t terribly talkative as we sat down, and he expressed a bit of concern for my emotional well-being. I wasn’t coherent enough to explain what was happening to my emotions and I wasn’t sure I trusted him with my deep, dark secrets at that point. So I shrugged like a sulky teenager, ran my hands over my messy, windblown hair, and mumbled that I was “just hungry.” And right on cue, a very kind, slightly older waitress with a sweet southern accent stopped by to take our order.
Kirk: Ah, yes. We’ll have two cups of black coffee. And we’ll share a slice of that delectable Maple Walnut Pie.
Waitress: Oh, honey. That pie is scrumptious! I take it you’ve been here before?
Kirk: I have. This will be her first time to taste the splendor.
I hated to be a killjoy, but I interrupted and said to the waitress, “Ma’am? I’m sure the Maple Walnut is excellent, but could I please get a slice of Banana Cream? And a big glass of ice water?
Waitress: Sure, hon! Banana Cream’s just as yummy! I’ll be right back with those coffees and that big water.
Kirk was sucking on the tip of his forefinger and shaking his head a bit. “You’re passing up so many sensational... sensual...”
I put my forehead on the table and growled. “You swore you’d stop being nasty!” I held this #headdesk pose for quite some time before I finally lifted my head... only to see that Kirk was still sucking his fingertip and staring at me like a wild animal. “Pleeeeeease be normal,” I whined. “It’s been a really weird night for me.”
Kirk: Indeed. Many surprises. You know... You’re like titanium. Your flame burns so fast and so bright, if a guy doesn’t get in there while the iron is hot, he’ll never get another chance. I was too slow.
What the...? I was pretty sure he was wrong about titanium burning quickly. I’m no chemistry wiz, but my dad and my oldest brother are both big-brains when it comes to physics and chemistry. So I picked up some things just listening to them talk. Accurate or inaccurate, Kirk was being creepy again. He’d never been creepy towards me before, although I’d seen him act like this with other women. Usually with staggering success. Why????? His money. It had to be his money. Kirk was a nice-looking man, but holy shit... No amount of good looks could save this creep show
And then, our sweet waitress sat down our coffees, my water, and the two slices of pie. After I gulped down a whole bunch of water, I grabbed a fork, prepared to quell my munchies... and then I froze. Kirk was quickly flicking his finger back and forth across the top of his pie. And moaning. He noticed my wide-eyed stare, smirked, sucked the tip of his thumb, picked up the plate with both hands, and began flicking his tongue across the tip of the triangular pie slice. And moaning some more. Well, there went my appetite.
Kirk took his middle finger and jabbed it into the crustless vertex of the pie slice, then he began pumping it in and out like a piston, and flicking his thumb across the increasingly demolished top layer of whipped cream. He gasped this time. People were starting to stare. His pointer finger joined his middle finger in the piston action, and he replaced his thumb with his tongue. Between flicks of the tongue, he groaned, “Oh yeah, baby... Let me taste you,” but it was kind of hard to understand him.
And I was either about to run to the back office, tell them that I was in danger and needed a police escort home... OR I was about to burst out laughing at the spectacle. Kirk continued... He removed his fingers and gregariously licked pie filling off of them. "Ohhhhh," he groaned, "I got you soooo sticky. So sweet. So moist." And then he started sucking his fingertips again, switching from middle to pointer, middle to pointer and emitting a delighted little, “Mmmmmm” with every suck.
Finally, he jabbed his fingers back into the utterly destroyed pie, lowered his face into the mess and lapped loudly and passionately, moaning, grunting, and mumbling “Come on, baby. Come on. Mmmmmm. Come on.” I could see the waitress and some dude in a suit heading over to the table, so I sank down in my seat, partially covered my face, but continued to watch the train wreck. At last, Kirk shuddered violently as he splatted his entire hand onto the plate and rubbed furiously. And then he locked eyes with me. He sucked the tip of his thumb one final time and said, “You...” There was a long pause during which Kirk lovingly stroked the mess he’d made. “You... are the pie.”
I don’t hang out with Kadillac Kirk anymore. But he’s still a bachelor, ladies!

Custom Mini RX 480 Project
"How I turned two partially working GPUs into the world's smallest RX 480"
Disclaimer:
I tried making a post about this project once already, only to find out later that my original text did not make it into the actual post, only the photos. It's a real shame because the original post was heavily trimmed and I tend to ramble (like I am now) so this repost will probably be a lot longer than the original. Please forgive any excessive, ADHD fueled, ranting. I'll try to put headers between each part, if you just wanted to skim though. Feel free to just skim the TLDR if you aren't in the mood for a short novel.
The TLDR:
I took a reference RX 480 8GB card and made it into the smallest instance of an RX 480 card that I could find anywhere. It is even smaller than some prototype SFX versions that never came to market. It's very janky, and took some TLC to make it all work.
I have outlined the whole process below if you are brave and have some time to kill. I have trouble keeping things short and sweet while still keeping the meat on the bone. So don't proceed if you are easily bored or hoping for a scientific breakdown. You have been warned.
Some backstory to start:
I took the cooler from an old R9 285 that was purchased for my father when he was using a Ryzen 2600 and needed some kind of graphics card. We tried a few cheap DP cards I had around but couldn't get any to work. I resorted to buying the cheapest working GPU I could find. This was peak mining boom, about 4 years ago now. He has since been upgraded to a 9600K system and no longer uses the R9 285.
That card had been sitting for a long time in a box of GPUs that needed attention. All of the cards were either obsolete or damaged in some way. I had a few decent RX 8GB cards in there that functioned, but had either a sketchy cooling solution, corrupted VBIOS, or both. I had gotten all my old RX cards to be at least "barely functional" so that I could mine on them, back when it was profitable. I already had a number of these cards on hand, so it was free money on the table as long as I could get them to a somewhat functional state.
However, the cooling on one particular RX 480 reference card only consisted of it's original slimmed down, blower style heatsink, nothing else. The original fan shroud was gone, which made the dangling blower fan all but useless. I had since removed it and strapped a 120mm case fan to the heatsink with zip ties, but even this had been removed after I stopped mining. In an open air chassis with good external airflow it has worked just fine, but to become a viable card for a more conventional PC case it's cooling solution needed to be addressed.
Starting on the project itself:
I noticed while going through all of my AMD cards that the mounting holes for most of their coolers were in the same pattern. Many of the cards even had unused mounting holes in the same spots. This made me curious if one of my less valuable cards had a cooler that would work with my 480. Because it was a reference card it had a short PCB, so I started by finding a card with a cooler that was roughly the length of the 480s bare PCB. This brought my attention to the neglected but functional R9 285.
When comparing the PCBs of both cards I found that the power delivery, memory chips, and MOSFET layout was almost identical. There were a couple of capacitors and connectors that caused interference. This stopped a quick and dirty cooler swap from being possible. After dealing with some of the other cards and not finding a better solution for the 480, I put the project on pause for a few months and forgot about it.
Fast forward a few months and I again noticed those 2 cards in my storage. They were the only 2 remaining in there. The rest had either already been fixed and deployed or were discarded. Finding those 2 cards again, I remembered my original idea. I decided to see if it would be possible to modify the heatsink of the R9 285 cooler so it could be mated to the RX 480 proper. I found that this would require cuts in the heatsink in 4 relatively small areas. Some cuts would be sketchier than others, but it was theoretically a viable project. Better yet, it looked as if all of the memory chips and power delivery would still get contact with the new cooler (assuming proper thickness of the replacement thermal pads).
The material removal itself was fairly straightforward. I used a variable speed Dremel and reinforced cutting disks for all of the cuts. Swapping out to some other bits definitely would have been ideal in a few areas. I made things harder on myself trying to make small, delicate cuts with a disk. Especially the cuts near the heat pipes required a lot of patience and many small adjustments before enough material was removed. I also needed a fairly decent chunk to be removed from the back corner of the card to avoid a large capacitor on the PCB. This cut would have removed one of only 2 remaining mounting points for the plastic fan shroud to attach to the heatsink, so I had to be very careful there too.
I managed to leave enough material around the fan mount so that it kept most of it's rigidity. The shroud was able to screw in without issue. It now mounts with only the 2 screws, rather than 4. Both screw locations are on the side of the shroud closest to the motherboard, when the card is installed. For the 2 empty mounting holes on the front facing side of the card I used thin twist ties to hold the shroud to the heatsink. This worked fine and is only really noticeable if you're looking for it. It was not a necessity to do this anyway, as the shroud was sturdy enough with just the 2 screws. It did help with the slight wobble of the shroud from vibration, but it would have functioned fine without the twist ties. I could have found a better solution but this one worked fine for my purposes.
Now that I knew the heatsink would mount to the 480 without any interference, and the fan shroud was firmly attached to the heatsink, it was time to think about thermal transfer. For the thermal pads I settled on one long pad over the length of the entire power delivery. The 285 heatsink had a strip of copper that covered the entirety of it's power delivery However, the 480 only had a thermal pad that partially covered it's power delivery, and no copper strip to help carry the heat to the fins. Because of this, I figured that one large pad covering almost all of the power delivery would suffice. There WAS a thin strip down the length of the power delivery that was not completely covered by the copper strip on the heatsink. But the full length thermal pad allowed at least most of the heat to make its way to the fins. I figured it would be fine, as it still covered more of the power delivery than the original 480 cooler had to begin with.
I chose to cut out individual thermal pads for each of the memory chips on board. This allowed me to double up in a couple areas where it was necessary to do so because of a slight height difference. The 285 heatsink had concave areas where it made contact with the memory chips on the board. These didn't quite line up perfectly with the memory chips on the 480, so a couple of them needed a second layer of thermal pad to reach the heatsink. This ultimately made little to no difference in the end. The memory temps ended up not being a problem at all.
I used Noctua thermal paste for the die, being careful to cover it entirely and I removed the cooler afterwards to ensure it had made good contact. I am sure there is better paste for this purpose, but it was the best I had on hand and this project was meant to be about recycling. I didn't exactly want to spend a bunch of money trying to fix up a card that might not make it, especially a GPU that had spent the better part of 4 years in a box at this point. This is something that I may change out later on, if I ever repaste one of my better GPUs and buy something better for the job. For now it is not a huge problem to me.
First attempts to boot. Some TLC is needed:
Because this was an old mining card it gave me a lot of grief initially. At first it just didn't show up in device manager at all, and I only had integrated graphics to boot. The fans on the card would occasionally spin up and then stop, so I knew that it was getting power. It just seemed like the Windows 11 machine had no idea how to communicate with whatever flashed VBIOS it had when it was mining.
The fact the fan spun at all gave me a lot of hope. The fan connector had looked the sameom both cards, but you can never be certain. The original blower fan had a much higher RPM and I worried about the new fan receiving too much power, frying something on the board. It turns out I just needed a reminder that electronic devices PULL power from a source, rather than the source forcing power to the fan. At least when they are working properly. In the end it ran at a reasonable speed the entire time, without any sort of fan tuning needed.
I decided the next step was to try the card in another PC. I turned to a Windows 10 install and a Supermicro 1155 motherboard and Xeon combo I had on hand. For whatever reason this did a lot to resolve the problem. I still had to use the onboard graphics to boot (VGA at this point because of the server motherboard). Once I was in Windows I could actually see the card listed as a video device, with the expected exclamation mark next to it, informing me that Windows had no idea how to communicate with it. This device manager error was something that I was familiar with and I knew what to do to get it working.
At that point it was probably already functional as a mining card. Mining software would recognize it and the fact it could be picked up by the system was probably enough for it to send mining data to the program (at least this was my experience in the past). However, I would definitely need to find a proper VBIOS and flash the GPU if I wanted to restore it's functionality as a video card. I began looking for one, but I knew that it may be a long shot. I could not find a VBIOS for the paritcular VisionTek reference card variant that I had, and I had to settle on a VBIOS for a Sapphire RX 480 8GB refrence card instead. I really lucked out, and this seemed to function. I was able to boot into Windows using the GPU for display, rather than the onboard header.
Once I was back inside Windows the card was properly reporting in device manager. The exclamation mark was still there, but updating the drivers was all that was needed to make it disappear. I now had a (hopefully) functioning card, with no obvious issues. I know that there may be unforseen long term consequences operating the card with the wrong VBIOS. As of rewriting this post I still have not experienced any, though. Time will tell if this was a temporary fix or if it is close enough that it won't be an issue.
Since it had booted properly in the Windows 10 machine, I moved it back to the Windows 11 bench, where it was thankfully recognized. This time no driver update was needed for device manager to recognize it. I decided it was time to do some testing to make sure it was all functioning as it should.
Testing for stability / temperature:
Huge disclaimer here, I am not a professional benchmarker. I don't do a battery of tests with comprehensive data analysis and visual charts. I am not overly concerned with all of the specifics in this situation. I just wanted to make sure the card was functional in the real world and that it wouldn't overheat under a realistic load. So I apologize that this isn't a comprehensive breakdown of the performance of my sketchy mod. I may return to this later on and do some more in depth testing of the performance. It is possible that the card is underperforming compared to a normal RX 480 8GB, but there were no obvious red flags to me.
To start I opened HW Monitor to watch the thermals and then I started a run of Heaven Benchmark. I ran it at 1440p, highest settings, and it basically maxed out the GPU usage. The card showed no noticable glitches or artifacting, and had fairly smooth FPS values, so left it to run in the background. I came back after well over an hour when I was sure the temperature had settled in. The final results were a max core temp of 81C, with no listed hotspot temp (I believe it just showed dashes). Idon't know if this was due to the particular model of GPU, the version of the Heaven software, or the improper VBIOS that I had installed. Memory temps were well under control with a max temp of just 62C.
After this successful stress test I decided to put it through some real world usage. I replaced the RTX 3060 in the kids PC with the it and I had them use it for a few days. I checked on temps periodically during this time and never saw the card go above 80C. I asked if they had any issues running any of their games, or if they had experienced any glitches or artifacts. But I did not make a comprehensive chart or do any detailed analysis. The fact that I don't think they had even noticed the swap from a 3060 to a 480 was enough evidence that it was working for me. As far as I am concerned it is now a functional RX 480 again. That was about as high as the bar was ever going to be for this project. I may do some more "in depth" testing of specific games in the future. For now I am happy to call this project a success.
In summary:
What started as spring cleaning of my tech cabinet snowballed into a restoration project, and then a full on GPU "mod". It may not be the most exciting thing I've done. I don't know if it even counts as a real mod. I definitely put more time and effort into this than it was worth. Still, I am happy with the result and glad I did it overall.
At the start of this project the finished card was probably destined to be donated, like most of my spare technology is. I work for some older folks and they will sometimes need replacement parts that they can't really afford. Cards like this are perfect for situations like that. It clears up some space in my cabinets and it saves them from spending money at the same time. It's also great for repeat business. But after all of the effort it took to get this card functional again, I think I'm going to keep it around. It may be retired from regular use, but it will make a cool little trophy to add to my tech collection. It may end up finding a home in a future ultra-SFF build I make. In any case I'll keep it as another cool piece of my personal tech history.

The Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard is an impressive blend of style and security. I've been using it for a while now, and I must say I am quite impressed with the product. The tempered glass front panel is sleek and elegant, complementing any bedroom decor.
The patented RFID technology is definitely a game-changer. I love being able to unlock the safe without even touching it, which is ideal when you're in a dark room and don't want to fumble around for your keys or access code. The 4 included RFID tags make it quick and easy to program the safe to open for you and your family.
One of the features that really stands out to me is the two USB-A ports for charging my devices. It's incredibly handy to have a place to charge my phone or other gadgets right next to my bed.
On the downside, I do wish the RFID reader and keypad were a bit more discreet. They're still functional, but they're quite prominent on the front panel. It would be nice if they were hidden away a bit more.
The heavy duty exterior housing and hardened interior locking lugs are a great feature, ensuring that the safe is built to last. However, I do wish there was a bit more padding on the interior for the items inside to prevent any potential scratches or damages.
Overall, I am quite satisfied with the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard. It's a fantastic bedside safe that offers quick and easy access, as well as a place to charge your devices. Definitely worth the investment!

I recently started using this Union Safe Company 1.51 Cu. ft. Electronic Lock Gun Floor Safe in my home after a friend recommended it to me. The first thing that stood out to me was the heavy-duty construction of the safe, which gives a sense of security just by looking at it. The tamper-proof hinges and heavy-gauge bolts are great features that make it difficult for anyone to break in.
One of the major highlights of the safe is its dual-entry lock, which allows you to enter through a digital keypad and also has a keyed override for emergencies. This extra layer of security is a huge plus and gives me peace of mind knowing that my valuables are well protected.
However, there are a few drawbacks that I've encountered while using this safe. The first issue is that the instructions provided with the safe are not very clear or well-written, making it challenging to set up and program the lock correctly. Another minor inconvenience is that the size of the safe might not be ideal for users with limited space in their home.
Despite these minor drawbacks, I am overall satisfied with the Union Safe Company 1.51 Cu. ft. Electronic Lock Gun Floor Safe. It has proven to be a reliable and secure storage solution for my firearms and other valuable items.

🔗Vaultek Wi-Fi Enabled 8-Gun Biometric Gun Safe

I recently had the opportunity to try out Vaultek's NMXi Wi-Fi High Capacity Rugged Smart Safe, and I was impressed by its durability and advanced features. This safe offers a sleek and modern design that is perfect for any gun enthusiast looking to secure their firearms.
The NMXi safe is constructed of heavy-duty 14-gauge steel housing and a 12-gauge door, providing a robust and reliable exterior. One of the standout features for me was the biometric scanner, which offers a quick and secure way to access your firearms. This safe is equipped with a backlit numeric keypad and manual keys for even more flexibility and convenience.
Another impressive aspect of this safe is its rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which can last up to a month on a single charge. The modular interior, featuring a pull-out height-adjustable shelf and a twin pistol rack, adds to the overall customization and organization of the safe.
While the NMXi Wi-Fi High Capacity Rugged Smart Safe has numerous pros, there are a few cons to consider. One downside is its premium price, which might deter some users. Additionally, the Wi-Fi connectivity could be a bit glitchy at times, but this is something that may improve with future updates.
In summary, the Vaultek NMXi Wi-Fi High Capacity Rugged Smart Safe is a robust and feature-packed safe that offers a seamless and secure experience for gun enthusiasts. Its sleek design, biometric scanner, and modular interior make it a top choice for those looking for a high-quality and customizable option.

When I received the Hornady Fireproof Keypad Safe, I was eager to test its robustness and functionality. As a product reviewer, I had the opportunity to use it in my daily life, and I must say, I was impressed by its features.
Firstly, the 16 gauge steel body construction and 8 gauge steel door of the safe had a lasting impression on me. The durable black powder coat finish added a sleek touch to its overall appearance. The electronic lock with a key backup provided an extra layer of security that I appreciated, especially when using it to store important documents and valuable items.
One of the standout features of this safe was the interior light, which automatically illuminates when opening the safe. It was a thoughtful design choice that allowed me to conveniently access my items without fumbling around in the dark.
The fireproof rating of 30 minutes in up to 1400 degrees F was an impressive feature, but I also noticed that it was not water-resistant, which could be a potential downside for those living in areas with high humidity.
The removable interior shelf offered flexible and secure storage options for a variety of items, from firearms and documents to jewelry and hobby equipment. I particularly enjoyed the protective carpet interior, as it safeguarded my valuables from potential damage.
One downside that I encountered was the low battery warning, which I found a bit annoying at times. It would be great if the alarm system could last a bit longer on a single set of batteries.
Overall, the Hornady Fireproof Keypad Safe was a reliable and durable choice for storing valuable items. With its heavy-duty construction and convenient features, it made a secure addition to my daily life.

🔗Wasatch 24 Gun Fire and Water Safe with Anti-Theft Electronic Lock

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Wasatch 24 Gun Fire and Water Safe with E-Lock 24EGW, and I must say, I was impressed. This fireproof and waterproof safe is perfect for gun enthusiasts who want to protect their precious belongings from potential damage.
One of the most impressive features of this safe is its backlit electronic lock, which comes with an Alarm-U function. The alarm notifies you of any attempted theft, and the backup key provides an extra layer of security. I loved that it offered external hinges, allowing for a full 180-degree opening, making it effortless to access my safe.
The interior door storage and 3-spoke handle design were another bonus that I found extremely useful. Additionally, the safe is equipped with 3 1.5-inch active locking bolts and 2 dead bolts that effectively deter any potential intruders.
However, I did notice that the safe is quite heavy, which can make transportation difficult. The size of the box also seemed to be larger than originally estimated, which was a bit of a hassle.
Overall, my experience with the Wasatch 24 Gun Fire and Water Safe with E-Lock 24EGW has been positive. I feel confident that my valuables are safely guarded, thanks to its impressive fire and water resistance capabilities. While there were a few minor drawbacks, they do not outweigh the fantastic features of this safe.

🔗Hornady Rapid Safe Ready Vault: The Ultimate Smart Firearm Safe

I've had the opportunity to use the Hornady Security RAPiD Safe in my own home, and let me tell you, it's been a game-changer. First things first, this safe provides top-notch security with its patented RFID technology. But it's not just a tough exterior, it's also incredibly user-friendly.
What I love most about this safe are the features that make my daily life easier. The neoprene floor mat prevents my guns from slipping around, making storage a breeze. Plus, the convenient digital keypad and backup mechanical key let me easily get to my firearms when I need them.
But just like any product, there were some minor drawbacks. The safe is a bit pricey, but it's definitely worth the investment. And some users may find the digital aspects a bit troublesome, especially if you're not tech-savvy.
Overall, this Hornady Security RAPiD Safe has been an essential addition to my home. It provides peace of mind and convenience, making it a winner in my book. And if you're in the market for a top-quality gun safe with all the bells and whistles, I highly recommend giving this one a try.

🔗Solid Wood Mahogany Mahogany Furniture Clock Safe for Handgun Concealment and Storage

https://preview.redd.it/2c5fbp9xkp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=438b6ee64b1efd12e7f80a51968ea3c7479e667d
As a gun owner myself, I found the Kraiovim Peace Keeper to be a clever and practical solution for concealing your valuables. The solid wood construction with a rich mahogany stain not only provides an aesthetically pleasing touch, but also ensures that the clock is sturdy and long-lasting.
What caught my attention the most, though, is the reliable quartz movement paired with a magnetically latched, hinged front panel. This feature allows you to safely conceal your gun while still being able to set the time, and it adds an extra layer of security to the overall design.
While it's perfect for its intended purpose, I must admit that I have encountered some minor flaws. It's quite bulky and takes up a lot of space, which might not be ideal for smaller rooms. Additionally, the fact that it's a mass-produced Amazon item might deter buyers who are looking for more unique or locally crafted products.
Overall, the Kraiovim Peace Keeper is a reliable and stylish option for concealing your firearm and other valuable items. Just be prepared to make a few adjustments and compromises for its practicality.

As a gun owner who values security and style, I recently came across the Concealment Clock and decided to give it a try. At first glance, I was skeptical about the functionality of a clock concealing a gun. However, after receiving the product and spending a few days using it, I was pleasantly surprised by its unique and innovative design.
The first thing that caught my attention was the solid and sturdy construction of the clock. It's built with high-quality materials that give it a luxurious, polished look. The high-precision quartz movement is a plus, ensuring that the clock keeps perfect time. The fact that it also includes an analog clock face with Roman numerals adds a classic and elegant touch.
One of the most interesting features is the magnetic latch closure on the front panel, providing a secure way to conceal the compartment for your gun. It's simple yet effective, and the keyhole on the back of the clock ensures that the panel stays closed when not in use.
My experience with the Concealment Clock has only been positive. However, I did encounter a minor issue with the battery compartment. The screws inside needed to be screwed in a little harder for the battery to fit securely. This was only a minor inconvenience, and I was able to solve the problem quickly.
In conclusion, the Concealment Clock offers a stylish and functional way to hide your gun at home or in the office. It's well-built, works perfectly, and even has the added benefit of being a practical and stylish clock. Although the battery compartment faced a minor hiccup, it didn't detract from the overall quality of the product. Overall, I'm highly satisfied with my purchase of the Concealment Clock.

🔗Secure Shotgun Wall Safe with RFID Technology

https://preview.redd.it/xhzbpj9ykp1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a4e1635a8561bd0da0a0d45787f7725f47f2eed2
As a gun enthusiast, I recently gave the Hornady Rapid Safe Shotgun by RFID a try in my home. The first thing that stood out to me was its slim design, allowing me to easily store it in tight spaces. However, I wasn't impressed with its small size, as it could only fit my shotgun sideways, making it quite cramped.
One of the unique features of this safe is its RFID technology, which provides touch-free entry using an RFID-enabled wristband, key fob, or sticker. I thought it was pretty cool to be able to unlock the safe with a simple wave of my hand, although it would be even better if it had a backup option in case the batteries ran out.
The construction of the safe appeared solid, with the exterior housing made of 14-gauge steel and two internal hardened locking lugs. However, I found the touch-free entry to be quite loud, which might not be ideal for people who value discretion.
Installation was a breeze, thanks to the pre-drilled mounting holes. I was able to easily install the safe in both horizontal and vertical positions, making it versatile for various storage locations. The fact that it exceeds ASTM International safety standards for child and pry resistance was also a comforting feature.
Overall, the Hornady Rapid Safe Shotgun with RFID has its pros and cons. While the slim design and RFID technology caught my attention, some other aspects, such as the small size and loud entry, were less impressive. Nonetheless, it's a solid choice for anyone looking for a quick-access shotgun safe.

As a homeowner with a growing family, I've always been conscious about the safety and security of our household items, especially the ones that are valuable or potentially hazardous to our little ones. That's why I decided to invest in the Stalwart Biometric Desk Mount Gun Safe, and boy, am I glad I did!
One of the first things that struck me about this gun safe is its smart biometric design. With three ways to unlock - fingerprint sensor, a keypad, or a backup key - it offers more than enough flexibility for me to access my weapons quickly and securely. The fingerprint sensor is particularly impressive, granting me quick access to my handgun when I need it most. Additionally, the inclusion of two backup keys ensures I won't be locked out if the electronics fail.
The Stalwart gun safe is not just smart, but also highly durable. Constructed from 14-gauge carbon steel with anti-pry bars and bolstered interior hinges, this safe is designed to withstand even the most determined intruder. What's more, it also comes with anti-impact latches and an impact detection system, which sets off an alarm if the safe is bumped or tampered with. This added layer of security has given me the peace of mind I've been looking for.
However, it's not all perfect with this product. The only issue I've encountered so far is its size. The safe can hold up to two handguns, but for someone like me who also needs to store ammo and other accessories, it can get a little cramped inside. But this is a minor concern, especially when comparing to the numerous benefits this product offers.
In conclusion, the Stalwart Biometric Desk Mount Gun Safe has been an invaluable addition to my home. Its smart design, robust construction, and added security features make it a reliable choice for those looking for a safe and efficient solution to store and access their firearms. Highly recommended!

🔗Concealed Clock for Stealthy Storage

Imagine waking up each morning to a beautifully functional timepiece that also doubles as a secure storage space for your valuable items. That's the experience I've had with the Tactical Walls 1410M Clock Standard - Black, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
The first thing that stands out about this product is its elegant, minimalist design. The sleek black clock blends seamlessly into any room, and the hidden compartments are cleverly concealed behind the clock face. The hidden compartments can hold an assortment of items, from firearms to personal belongings, providing secure storage in plain sight.
One of the key features that I love about this clock is its magnetic lock. It ensures that the compartments stay securely closed, providing peace of mind knowing that my valuables are safe. However, the lock can be a bit tricky to operate at first, but with practice, it becomes second nature.
While I've had a great experience with this Tactical Walls Clock, there are a couple of cons to mention. The first is the size of the clock face, which is a bit smaller than expected. It might not be the best choice for those who are visually impaired or have difficulty seeing small objects.
Another downside is the durability of the product. The clock face and compartments are made of thin plastic, which can be a bit concerning for those who expect a more robust design. I've also noticed that the Velcro holding the clock face in place seems a bit weak, which might result in the clock face coming loose over time.
In conclusion, the Tactical Walls 1410M Clock Standard - Black is a stylish and functional storage solution for those who value both aesthetics and practicality. Despite the small drawbacks, I've had a positive experience with the product and would recommend it to others seeking concealed storage options for their valuable items.

The compact design lets me store a handgun up to 8 inches long and other small valuable items, thanks to the built-in lid organizer. The smart Sense digital keypad is a game-changer, requiring only a simple tap for quick access and ease of use. The biometric fingerprint scanner efficiently stores up to 20 fingerprints, ensuring only authorized access.
I appreciate the 18-gauge rugged steel construction and anti-pray reinforced construction, providing enhanced security and peace of mind. The tamper detection and included security cable add an extra layer of protection to keep my valuables safe. One downside I noticed is that the battery life may not be as long as I'd like, but overall, the Vaultek Barikade Series 1 Biometric Safe has been a reliable and practical choice for my daily life.

I recently had the chance to test out the Vaultek VS20 Non-Biometric Smart Safe in my daily life. First off, the Bluetooth 2.0 feature makes it super convenient to manage the safe from my smartphone within its Bluetooth range. Plus, the compact design allows me to securely store my handgun, magazine, passport, and cash, making it travel-friendly and easily mountable.
The heavy-duty 16-gauge carbon steel construction feels extra tough and rugged, ensuring long-lasting protection for my belongings. The automatic opening lid and responsive LED lighting allow for quick access to my valuables at any time, whether it be at night or during the day.
However, there are a few areas that could use improvement. For instance, the battery life could be a bit longer than 6 months under normal use, and the manual keys could be a bit more responsive. I recently had the opportunity to try out the Hornady Rapid Safe Compact Ready Vault with WiFi, and it exceeded my expectations in both convenience and security. The built-in RFID technology allowed for lightning-fast access, and the compatibility with the RFID bracelet and key made it even more convenient. However, the heavy-duty steel construction and hardened steel locking mechanism provided unparalleled protection against unauthorized users.
One of the highlights of this product was the user-programmable keypad, which allowed for personalized security codes to be input. Additionally, the SQUARE-LOK organizing system made it easy to store and access my firearms and other essentials. While the WiFi and RFID technology made the experience more streamlined, it also required me to be vigilant about ensuring the safety of my WiFi network.
Overall, the Hornady Rapid Safe Compact Ready Vault with WiFi provided a perfect balance between convenience and security, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a reliable gun safe solution. 2024.05.21 06:12 RLOclen A Hike to Remember

I want to thank Meatcanyon and Wendigoon for starting Creepcast. I've played around with writing horror, and here is my first short story. I will post it for free in a few other places to see what people think. Please enjoy!
A Hike to Remember
By R.L. Oclen
Chapter 1
A woman sits with hastily pulled-up fire-red hair in the waiting room of the state patrol station. The procedurally sterile off-white walls and decade-old magazines do little for comfort. With her head hanging low, her shoulders pushing forward, and her boots rapidly tapping on the floor, something has to give.
"Please just let her be okay." The woman growls as a pair of officers come in from the field. The officers' demeanors quickly change when they see the familiar face.
"Tabitha, did Officer Nichols call you?" one of the state patrol officers asked sympathetically.
"Yes, he asked me to come in and pick up a few things," Tabitha said, shooting back a muted look.
" I'll let them know you're here." The officer said, nodding to Tabitha as they passed the security door. Tabitha leaned back against the hard plastic chair, staring blankly into the fluorescent light. She had done this dance in the macabre repeatedly over the past month. The last image of her younger sister, Lisa, still burned in her mind. Tabitha had always been protective over her younger sister after their parents died. A pang of guilt shoots through her chest as she thinks about her and Lisa's argument.
"Tabitha Hymm, Officer Nichols is ready for you."
"Okay," she stood up, shaking off her guilt, and followed the officer back. The familiar surroundings of the state patrol station blurred as Tabitha stared forward. She followed the officer as they came to a rustic wooden office door, which was embossed with "Officer Nichols."
The escorting officer turns the old brass door knob. "Sir, I have Tabitha Hymm here." A grizzled West Virginia Highway State Patrol veteran sits behind the desk and nods. The escorting officer steps aside, pushing the door open as Tabitha pushes past him and slumps in the awaiting chair like so many times before. An uncomfortable relationship had formed between the two, born out of necessity and duty.
"Cup of coffee?"
"No thanks. Let's just cut to the chase. You don't have anything new?"
The worn laugh lines and Officer Nichols's face flattens. His eyebrows contour sympathetically as he shakes his head.
"Tabitha, I don't have anything else new for you. I wanted to give you the clothes returned from the lab." Her face darkened at the same response she had heard many times.
"As we discussed two weeks ago, there is nothing new and no signs of struggle or foul play," Officer Nichols said while placing a box marked evidence on the table and sliding it forward. Tabitha began to weep at the realization of Lisa's clothes in front of her. In a coordinated queue, Officer Nichols brought out a box of tissues. Reluctantly, Tabitha took a few moments to unblur her vision.
"How does someone stop their car in the middle of the Remington West Virginia State Park, lock it, and then walk into the woods?" Officer Nichols clasped his hands together and sighed at her worn question.
"Tabitha, I wish I had an answer for why your sister stopped her car in the woods and simply walked off. We're still going through her cell phone, but no signs exist that anyone forced her. On that Tuesday morning, she pulled over to the side of the road, secured her car, and walked away." Officer Nichols said empathetically.
Tabitha became stoic at the same explanation she had heard many times before. " So what next?"
"You should go back to Ohio, and I'll contact you as soon as I have more information." She winced at Officer Nichols's words. Reality began to pull at her that bills and work wouldn't wait much longer.
"If I leave, she's gone for good."
" You staying won't bring her back." Officer Nichols said sympathetically.
" So is that it? She's just gone?"
" Tabitha, I'll be honest with you. In cases like this… when people do things like this. Recovery is harder in the spring due to the weather and the animals. You know her mental condition better than I do. I can't explain why she did what she did. But until I find a solution, a suicide note, some intention, or body. She's not here. Tabitha, I'm-"
" Don't you fucking say sorry!" Tabitha stood up, screaming at Officer Nichols, throwing the plastic chair backward against the wall. " I should just look for myself."
"No!" Officer Nichols said momentarily, gripping the desk as his face hardened, then relaxed. Tabitha was caught off guard by Officer Nichols, who was normally composed. "Tabitha, I know this is unbearable. I've sat on this side of the desk and had these conversations. Trust me; I need you to be safe if I need your help later."
Tabitha nods, knowing Officer Nichols is right. She reaches down, picks up the evidence box of her sister's belongings, and leaves.
" Tabitha, if you're heading home, don't stop your car; just keep driving." Tabitha stops to look at Officer Nichols, feeling an eeriness to his words.
" Goodbye, Officer Nichols," Tabitha said as she closed the rustic wooden door behind her. She counted the tiles as she exited the West Virginia State Patrol Station. Placing her sister's belongings carefully in the back seat of her Jeep, Tabitha then sat momentarily behind the steering wheel, staring at the emblem. The familiar numbness washed over Tabitha as she pushed the start button. She pulled onto the highway, driving to the motel that had been home for the last month or so. Muted pop music accented the drive back as her mind raced with questions. Once inside the two-and-a-half-star motel room, Tabitha sat her sister's belongings on the corner table, crumbled onto the bed, and cried.
***
Tabitha wiped the steam from the slightly spotted mirror above the bathroom sink. The hot water from the shower felt good and loosened some of the stress from her body. Looking back at her, Tabitha's face was framed by damp curls around her shoulders. Her face marked the stress of the past month. Frowning, she examined the bags under her eyes; sleep had to come tonight. Walking into the living area, She changed into her favorite gym shorts and oversized sleep shirt. The alarm on her phone flashed "7:00 am," so she could drive home five hours after breakfast.
Tabitha hated feeling comfortable in this once strange room, but falling asleep was getting easier now. Her eyes closed slowly as the ceiling fan droned evenly. At first, nothing came in her dreams, but she let her guard down and slipped further into sleep.
As she dreamed of floating overhead like a bird of prey, Tabitha soared over the vast Remington National Park. The high noon sun bore down on the crisp woods, perfectly contrasting sky and forest. The heat of the sun felt good on her feathers. Distant cries rang out through the dream-like forest, catching her attention. Tabitha tilted her wings toward the screams, feeling a sense of familiar curiosity.
She now recognized the sobs and cries for help as she flew closer, her sharp eyes locked on her sister leaning against a large oak tree. She glided overhead without care, examining the situation below. Lisa clung to the tree, her eyes darting back and forth, scanning upwards. Lisa's face reflected desperation, looking for help in any direction. Tabitha lazily circles Lisa several times before perching on a sturdy branch higher in one of the oak trees. She watched Lisa intently with hunger. She bellowed deeply, hearing the unnatural sound she made, catching Lisa's eyes. Lisa's expression changed; she became calm, almost uncaring, as she stared back at Tabitha's form. Hunger grew exponentially in Tabitha as she spread her large wings. Her large eyes gaze down at Lisa before diving straight for her sister.
Tabitha jolts awake to the alarm on her phone flashing "7:23 AM." She breathes in sharply, shaking off the last horrible thoughts from the reoccurring nightmare. The strange details become more vivid each time. The lingering memories of folk stories her mother told sat in the back of her mind. In those stories, the dead would reach out in dreams as a matter of warning. Leaning back on the headboard, she searched for the advice her psychologist gave her. During their last session, Dr. Ryland explained dreams are a form of self-actualization of guilt. He told Tabitha that it was natural to feel responsible when losing a loved one in this manner.
Tabitha grumbled, lightly running her hands through her red hair; she pushed everything to the back of her mind. "Get it together!" She grumbled to herself. She pushed herself off the bed and got ready to leave. It was going to be a long trip home, and the only thing she could do now was leave things in the authorities' hands. Packing up was pretty easy since she only cycled through the outfits she brought. The local laundromat must have made a small fortune off her. Tabitha took one last look at the box of Lisa's belongings before throwing them in her duffle bag. She was thankful she didn't have to spend another night in this room.
***
Tabitha sat behind the wheel, waiting for the 90's model minivan to finish their order so she could grab a breakfast burrito on the way out. Considering the situation, the Deer Stop Family Restaurant did have a good breakfast. Finally, pulling up to the 70-style drive-in board, Tabitha rolled off the order she had been accustomed to. " I'll take a large iced tea with the double breakfast burrito meal and hash browns, please."
" Would you like some happy hot sauce with that?"
" That's fine, and a few ketchup packets as well."
" Your total is $8.79. Please pull around."
She pulled around to her window, flashed her debit card, got the receipt, and waited for her food. Luckily, the young woman serving her wasn't very talkative in the morning. The last thing she wanted was a conversation about the weather or meaningless small talk.
" Here's your large iced tea and breakfast meal. Ketchup and happy hot sauce are inside."
" Thanks," Tabitha said while mustering her best fake smile. The woman only smiled and nodded as the service window automatically closed. She pulled into the parking lot and dug into breakfast. Turning the radio to the weather, Tabitha sat back and enjoyed her meal. The local DJ read through the headlines, making nonpartisan comments about politics and grumbling about improving the economy. Tabitha powered through the updates of the "out-of-state woman" who'd gone missing. It was nice that the local radio station gave Lisa's name, description, and a missing person's number for sightings or leads. Tabitha even interviewed with the local news and radio stations, hoping it would bring Lisa home. But she soon found all it brought was a sorrowful look from the locals as she interacted with them in her day-to-day life.
Finishing the last of her hash browns, Lisa wadded up everything in the paper bag and threw it in the back seat. The 9 AM weather report said it was nothing but clear skies and sun the rest of the week. Tabitha flipped the radio over to the greatest hit station, pulled out of the parking lot, and began her trip home. She memorized the roads, every bend and turn in the early weeks as she frantically looked for Lisa. There's something hypnotic about the trees: the way they flow together. The trees' green tops and the oak trees' wide trunks were a relaxing view. Tabitha enjoyed the lazy s-curves of the road, bending and winding around the hills and the trees. The occasional farmhouse or field dotted the sides of the road as she made her way to the main highway.
The blur of a semi-truck snapped Tabitha's attention as she pulled up to the mouth of the highway. She had four and a half hours ahead of her, which would be a long ride. Tabitha pulled onto the highway and picked up speed, noting sparse traffic. She relaxed into her seat, letting her gaze gloss over the blur of green foliage. Without warning, Tabitha caught a large shadow from the corner of her left eye. When she registered the black feathery form, Tabitha tensed up and slammed on the brakes as it swooped across the vehicle's hood. Quickly, she pulled the car safely off the road. She couldn't determine exactly what it was, but it was bigger than any bird she'd seen. It was a bird, right? Tabitha turned off her Jeep and grabbed the keys and cell phone. Standing before the Jeep, she looked over the grill to see if she made contact with the entity.
Bewildered, she scanned the tree line, spotting something in the distance. Sitting in the clearing of the large oak forest was an enormous black owl. It stared intently at Tabitha with bright, shiny yellow eyes. She pushed the lock button on her keys, causing the jeep to beep securely. She turned, looking across the open field, an enormous black owl perched in the upper branches of an old oak tree. Each step she took away from the road piqued her curiosity. Soon, Tabitha stood in the middle of the open field, staring intently into the eyes of the enormous owl.
The horn of a passing semi-truck blared, pulling Tabitha's attention away from the mysterious large creature. She looked back and saw that she had walked farther away from the Jeep than she had thought. She glanced back to the forest line only to see the enormous owl was deeper into the woods than before. She narrowed her vision to find the two large, bright yellow eyes staring back. Had it moved? The day's stress, care, and worry suddenly poured out of Tabitha. It was replaced by only curiosity and overbearing tranquility. She warmly smiled for the first time in months as her feet pulled her further into the woods.
Chapter 2
The tug of gravity pulls Tabitha to her senses as her body reacts, falling forward. Her arms thrust forward, bracing for impact. Water rushes around her face as she struggles to get her bearings. Quickly, Tabitha pushed herself up in the ankle-high stream she fell in. The haze slowly clears from her mind as she stares at the muddy water. The dull ache throbs up her legs. Tabitha can smell the sweat from her clothes. Her face contorted in panic as she quickly stood up in the water, looking for her cell. Thankfully, the device was still in her pocket, dry and unscathed.
"One o'clock. How can that be?" Tabitha says, slowly looking up from the screen to see the vast, dense West Virginia forest encompassing her view. She shakes her head back and forth with disbelief. A smile gently spreads across her face, with the last bit of tranquility leaving her body. How did I get out here? Her breathing becomes faster as her pulse begins to quicken. I'm in the forest. I'm all alone—just like Lisa!
"NO, NO, NO, NO! THIS FUCKING CAN'T BE HAPPENING TO ME!" Tabitha screams into the void of trees. Her eyes well up with tears as she crumbles to her knees, gripping her phone tightly to her chest. Her sobs ring out through the thick oak trees. Her breath slows a little as she regains her composure. She begins to search her mind for anything. What is the last thing I can remember? The image of the black shadow crossing her vision while driving flashes into her mind.
"Okay, I got out of the Jeep, the…then what?" Tabitha says, trying to refresh her memories. She thinks her memory is not just gone; it's a black void in her mind. Complete blackness fills her mind right after remembering locking the Jeep and then turning to see the…
"Fuck I saw something. What was it!" Tabitha says, frustrated with her mind. She knew there must be a logical reason she was out here. Officer Nichols warned her not to go looking for her sister. She wasn't stupid; she just said that as a last-ditch effort to get him to do anything. Now I'm here.
"Run!" Tabitha heard Lisa's voice in her ear. Before she could turn around, she heard a loud bellowing coming from overhead. Fear shot down her back, reminding her of the nightmares she had over the past month. She shot forward full bore as something crashed to the ground behind her. Glancing back as she ran, a black mass of feathers convulsed between the broken branches of the trees. Its slick black feathers rippled across its surface as its bones crackled and flesh tore. Its body contorted and twisted from the shape of an owl to something bigger.
"Run, Tabby! Don't let it catch you!" Tabitha pushed forward, hearing Lisa's scream beside her face. Her breath burned in her chest, and she moved past the old oak trees bent over the creek bed. Her feet slammed rapidly, splashing along the side of the creek. Another loud bellow comes from behind as the trees bend and break to the force behind her. A small opening in the rocky creek bed catches her sight from the left. She dives into the crevasses, not caring where the fathoms lead. Tabitha tumbles in the pitch black, taking scrapes and sharp jabs from the rocks as she tumbles further into the void.
She finally tumbles to a stop on the sandy, wet floor of the cave. Her body aches from the sudden burst of exhaustion. The cool water running around her body from the creek is soothing despite her bumps and bruises. Pushing herself up, she scoots out of the water. Feeling her way forward, she finds a dry spot to collect herself. Quickly pushing her hand into her pocket, she finds her phone undamaged.
The sound of footsteps pushing against the creek fills the void around Tabitha as the light steps move closer to each other up the underground creekbed. She slowly removes her cell from her pocket and then shines the camera light toward the sound. A pair of scratched and bruised pale bare legs hold up a frail form in front of her in the creek. She wears the darkness as a shroud with nothing else to clothe her. Tabitha froze, not wanting to shine the light further in the pale form before her.
"Tabby, turn your light off. You need to save your battery." Tabitha turned off the light and then rushed forward, embracing Lisa—the how or why didn't matter, only the now. The pale form hugged her tightly. Tabitha felt her cold, bare skin. The darkness couldn't hide the feeling of the marks across her back and torso.
"Lisa, I'm-"
"Hush! I don't have much time. This wasn't your fault! I'm with Mom and Dad now. You have to survive, Tabby! Listen. Wait until the sun shines through the cracks, making a trail out. Follow it down the creek until you come to the opening. You'll see a large hill you hike up for a cell signal. And remember…If you can't see it… It can't hurt you. I love you-"
Tabitha stumbled forward before catching herself. The void in front of her arms was only filled by cool air. She looked up and noticed a faint glimmer of light pushing through the ceiling. She sat down, relaxing against the limestone wall of the cave, waiting for the trail of light to form.
***
After a few hours, the light shining through the cracks of the cave ceiling was bright enough to lead Tabitha to the other side. She stepped onto the creek bed, thankful for the sun hanging lower in the sky. Scanning the sky, Tabitha saw only a few clouds. The foothills of Appalachia backdropped the forest as she scanned for the hill. Her eyes found the trail leading up the steady slope of an impressive hill. The top of the hill was bare. Part of the hill must have sheared off in a landslide, leaving the top void of trees and a jagged cliff face. Tabitha started her hike up the back of the hill. She was careful to stay under the heavy canopy of the old trees, hopefully avoiding the creature's eyes.
She did her best to quiet her mind while hiking up the trail. Come on, almost to the top, then I can call 911, she replayed repeatedly in her mind. Her adrenaline made up for the lack of food since morning. She drank some water from a clean spot in the creek. She was placing her bet on rescue rather than worrying about the water.
Leaning against one of the trees, Tabitha took out her cell and measured the signal.
"Damn it, nothing!" She swore under her breath. She listened nervously and cautiously peered her head out from the tree line. Standing at the tree line, the cell phone still had a low signal. She pushed her anxiety down with a swallow and slowly stepped forward onto the bare rock. Tabitha was now out in the open. She walked with the cell phone pointed upwards, measuring the signal. Within three feet of the cliff face, her signal bar punched up to full. Tabitha began to punch in the numbers just as a pair of large yellow eyes appeared. She felt her legs become weak, and her vision blurred as the creature snared her in its gaze.
Tabitha ducked, missing the giant owl's claws as it swooped for her. She squinted her eyes shut, momentarily breaking the hold of the infernal beast as it crashed to the ground, tumbling down the path of old trees. On her hands and knees, she tucked the dialed phone back into her pocket. She heard the creature's loud bellowing, followed by the snapping of bone and flesh ripping. It was changing its shape to finish her off.
Tabitha tried to get up, but the flash of its eyes did something to her. Her legs were numb, her stomach was in knots, and she could barely put a few thoughts together.
"If you can't see it, it can't hurt you." Tabitha heard clearly in her left ear. She quickly pushed herself into a sitting position and fumbled for the key chain in her right pocket. Pulling the long chain of keys, luck charms, and keepsakes, her father's Swiss army knife dangled at the end. She slowly opened the half-inch blade. Her body wholeheartedly rejected her plan and tried to fight her. Every internal warning system sounded as her body fought against her as she brought the blade against the corner of her left eye.
She didn't know if she could do it until the creature bellowed in her direction. With one quick motion, the half-inch blade sliced across her left eye. The world dimmed and then went black on her left side. Behind her, the beast's thundering gallop was getting closer. Tabitha plunged herself into total darkness with the last bit of her strength. Her hand gripped tightly around the bloody knife as she folded forward onto the ground. She could feel herself weeping blood. She squinted, doing her best to stem the tide of blood loss.
A large feathered paw drove into Tabitha's right side, flipping her onto her back. She lay still as the hulking creature stood over her. It remained motionless, and Tabitha was confused about why it didn't move or bite her. Then she started to giggle, just a little at first. Then, laughing madly into the creature's face as it growled back at her. She could not see it; she couldn't see anything. Her mind couldn't be eaten!
The creature roared into Tabitha's face while plunging one of its sharp claws into her shoulder. Tabitha screamed in pain, slashing the knife downward. The blade hit something soft, and she ripped the blade down, rending whatever she had hit on the abomination. A bright yellow, foul-smelling liquid gushed in a torrent over Tabitha's face. She turned to cough, having swallowed a portion of it. The creature reared back, squealing in pain. Its hind leg came down hard on Tabitha's leg, snapping her tibia. She jerked her leg up, causing the creature to tumble forward and fall over the edge of the cliff side.
Tabitha heard the creature crash below at the base of the hill. A large dead tree speared the creature through its chest. Tabitha could hear the labored whines of the creature as its cries became weak and slowed. A wave of sickness hit her as she rolled over and vomited. The foul smell drenched her. She did her best to focus, reaching into her pocket and pulling out the phone. By memory, she typed in the unlock pin. She held her breath and placed her thumb where the call button should be.
She could hear the call being made then, "911. What is your emergency?"
"Please help me! A bear has attacked me, and I can't see. I think I am on a hill."
"Ok, ma'am, stay with me! Do you know where you are located?"
"No, I'm lost. Please send help."
"It's okay. Stay with me on the phone, and I'll use the cell signal to try to find you."
"I'm on top of one of the hills. I think I am lying on a bare roc-" Tabitha slipped unconscious with the cell still tightly in her hand. Her body began to tremble and convulse.
"Ma'am! Ma'am! Stay with me. I have help on the way."
Chapter 3
A young man in military fatigues frantically compiles images and reconnaissance data from his drone feed. Confirming his hunch, he commands the winged surveillance drone to make a hard left and send a live video feed. His eyes widened as he saw a large owl-shaped shadow crash onto the top of a hill. He watches in awe as the sleek black owl twists and shifts into something much larger, like a grizzly. As the drone turns, he sees a woman at the cliff's edge trying to steady yourself on her hands and knees.
He bolts up from the command module, jotting down the drone's coordinates on one of the printouts. The drab government-issued office motif for the watch station blurs in the corner of his eye as he rushes down the hallway to the watch commander's office.
"Sir, recon has eyes on AMOS! And it's feeding!" the man said, swinging the heavy wooden door open. He took the hastily compiled file and pushed it forward to the commanding officer.
An older, tanned man quickly stands, reaching for the files. His brow furls, seeing his charge is awake. "Keep eyes on it! Go Adams!" The young man nods, turning on his heel and bolting for the drone command module. As his office door slams shut from the subordinate officer, he grabs his headset and frantically dials the closest military outpost to the coordinates.
"Hello, Sergeant Klein; this is Agent Smith of Black Watch outpost 7948! Shadow is active, code Alpha, Mike, Oscar, Sierra. The coordinates and data package have been sent. A civilian is on the ground; deploy strike-and-rescue ASAP.
"We'll be up in five, Agent Smith! The line cuts as Agent Smith closes out the call on his headset and rushes to the door. The normally quiet watch station buzzes alive, with personnel flooding the central command station. The background echoes resource allocation calls, frantic typing, and the hum of cold computers warming up.
"Adams, get our eyes back on Amos!"
"Coming back around in 30 seconds." Thirty sets of eyes stare at the three giant screens, anxiously waiting for the drone feed to clear the bank of trees. The camera clears the tre top to see the giant feathered grizzly rear back slinging its massive head away from its prey. Its large yellow right eye spews bright yellow liquid all over the red-haired woman and the cliff face. The giant feathered grizzly missteps, crushing the woman's leg and causing the creature to tumble over the cliff face.
"Fuck!" Agent Smith yells in horror as he watches AMOS fall four stories, impaling a sharp, 3-meter-tall log lodged in the boulders. The command center freezes wide-eyed at the flailing dying creature on screen. Agent Smith pulls his cell out quickly and dials.
"Klein, Scrub the current request! AMOS is down! Switch to rescue and harvest now!
"What, someone took out AMOS?"
"YES! It's at the bottom of the cliff, bleeding out essence! The woman is covered in it as well. Clean as much of it off her as possible before you take her to the ER.
"Understood!"
Agent Smith, in a rage, slings his phone straight forward, connecting with Private Adams's skull. Adams flinches at the sudden impact of the hard plastic and covers his head. Agent Smith grabs the table in front of him and flips it over, sending the computer equipment crashing to the government-issued tiled floor.
"A two-year cycle gone! All that essence is gone! Now I have to wait another 24 months for AMOS to resurrect!" Agent Smith screams, causing the rest of the staff to recoil away in fear.
"Jones!" Agent Smith says sternly, turning to a petite woman on his left. She stares at him, pleading.
"Yes Sir?'
"Get Officer Nichols on my office line. That fuck up has some explaining. He should have told us AMOS was awake."
"Right away!" Jones quickly sits back down and begins dialing Nichols, thankful she doesn't have to deal with Agent Smith further. The command center quickly shifts gears as Agent Smith returns to his office.
***
Two Weeks later…
"Tabitha… Tabitha… This is Doctor Wilhelm. Wake up." The kind older gentleman said as they gently nudged Tabitha in her hospital bed.
"Where am I?" Tabitha asked, waking from what felt like years of sleep. She sat up, the world still pitch black, but an odd sense of the world around her seemed to hum just behind her eyes.
"You're in the hospital, dear; you scared us. Do you remember anything?" He said as he sat down on the side of her bed.
Tabitha thought for a moment the last parts after she slashed her eyes were a blur. She remembers people yelling and the sound of two or three helicopters over her. " No, it's really all just a blur."
"Well, it's probably for the best. You had some very serious injuries. The first night, we honestly didn't think you would make it. Then…" The doctor trailed off with a concerned expression, not knowing how to explain things further.
Tabitha felt his pulse quicken somehow. She didn't understand it but fully felt or sensed the doctor beside her. She sensed the two other nurses standing at the end of the bed. Her body didn't hurt. She felt great. She felt hungry.
"Doctor, you said had. What happened to my injuries?" She said calmly, trying not to startle the old doctor further.
"Well, Tabitha, it's the closest thing to a miracle I've ever seen. You had violent seizures from the minute you hit the entrance of the ER. We couldn't even set your leg. The medications we gave you had a minimal effect, and you thrashed so much that we had to restrain you. Then, the early morning check-in found you in a deep sleep. All but your eyes were completely healed. So we switched gears to support care and treated your eyes the best we could." He said, watching her reaction.
Tabitha leaned back in her bed, taking in the wild account. "Do you know how I healed so quickly?"
"What happened to you is beyond all scientific reason. A miracle is the only way the staff and I can explain it. I know you have been through a lot, but I want to check your eyes."
"Thank you for all your help, Doctor Wilhelm." She said, sitting up in bed.
"You are most welcome, dear. Now I am going to unwrap your eye-dressing. Hold still, please." he said as he reached up and pulled on the bandage tape. Tabitha felt a quick tug and felt the bandages loosen from around her head. The doctor slowly unwrapped the bandages. The doctor's brow wrinkled as he examined the two large black scabs covering Tabitha's eyes.
"Tell me if this hurts at all, ok?"
"Yes, doctor." She relaxes as the doctor's gloved fingers pass over the scab. He pushes and gently tugs at the side of one, and it starts to lift. He pulls on the scab more, and Tabitha begins to sense the light as it hits her eyelid.
"Oh, I can sense the light, Doctor Wilhelm!" She said, smiling.
"Wonderful! Nurse Allen, please hand me some saline solution. I think a little water will loosen these right up. Hold still; this may feel cold," he said as he reached for the solution. She felt the cool liquid flush over the left eye, then the right. The scabs fell away with a gentle tug from the doctor. She could see the light shine through her eyelids. She grinned widely, happy to have some form of sight left.
"Please open your eyes for me," he said as he sat back on the bed. Tabitha slowly opened her eyes. The flood of light was almost too much, causing her to squint. After a few moments, she adjusted to the fluorescent lights. Three figures began to take shape in front of her. First, the distinguished older features of Doctor Wilhelm came into view quickly, followed by the brunette and blonde younger nurses standing at the end of the bed. Suddenly, her vision snapped into place, crisp and clear.
"I can see perfectly! This is amazing! Thank you, Doctor Wilhem!" she said, turning to look directly into his eyes, but he stared back at her unmovingly.
"Doctor Wilhelm?" she said as her expression became more worried. Doctor Wilhelm just sat staring, intensely focused on her eyes. His expression was overbearingly calm. She glanced at the nurses, rigidly staring back at her with trapped, calm expressions. Doctor Wilhelm began to twitch slightly. It traveled from the base of his spine out to his limbs, finally convulsing.
"Doctor Wilhelm, are you okay?" Tabitha yelled as the doctor began to have a seizure and fell on top of her bed.
"Help Him!" She screamed at the two nurses only to see both of them crumble to the tiled floor. One of them bashed her head off the bed frame. Tabitha recoils back from Doctor Wilhelm in terror as he starts foaming at the mouth. She climbs over the bed rail and hits the tiled concrete floor with a thud. Her adrenaline surges as she bolts for the door, looking for help.
At the entrance of her hospital room, she sees another nurse leaving the adjacent room. "Please, my doctor and staff need help!" As the male nurse turns to see Tabitha, he suddenly goes stiff before collapsing into a violent seizure, spilling his cart over with him.
"What's happening!" Tabitha screams, thinking something is in the air, or everyone has come down with something. A pair of security guards round the corner, hearing the screams and commotion.
"Ma'am, are yo-" The guard freezes mid-stride as he makes eye contact with Tabitha. Both men start to convulse and topple over, thrashing violently on the hard tile.
"No, no, no, no!" Tabitha yells as she darts into the women's bathroom, a few doors up the hall. She runs in, terrified of the situation. She approaches one of the sinks, bracing herself against the cool porcelain. Her stomach turns, and she dry heaves in the sink. She steadies herself while turning on the cold water. Leaning in, she takes a drink. As she looks up, a glint of two yellow eyes catches her. Tabitha stumbles backward on reflex. Then, she sees her reflection in the mirror. Two completely bright yellow eyes stare back at Tabitha. She screams at herself in the mirror, not feeling hungry anymore.
The end.
I will

2024.05.21 05:11 frogjumperjelly I want to do this as a career. How do I?

I'm currently an undergraduate student (rising junior) with a double major in behavioral science and psychology and a minor in computer science.
Looking at these graphs and imaging myself collecting, analyzing, visualizing, and making decisions based on data about human behavior makes me light up. I do this stuff for free in my own time constantly, but I'm starting to realize this is what I should do as a career.
Starting from where I am now, what would be the best advice/trajectory for me to follow to get into a career in collecting/analyzing/visualizing/integrating human behavioral data in an impactful+lucrative way?
I've been looking at details on UW's Master of Science in Psychology: Data Science in Human Behavior, Penn's Master of Behavioral and Decision Sciences, Miami's Social and Behavioral Data Science. Out of all these, I like Wisco's the most but am willing to hear out anything.

2024.05.21 04:11 HannahAveryWrites Army Affair: Ch 3

First, a little about me. I'm 5'5ish, 135ish depending on the day, and have dark brown hair that falls part way down my back with brown eyes. My mom is a Crow (Native American) and my dad is Italian so the olive complexion genes are active in my family. I've got a fairly petite/athletic build with a 32B chest and a toned butt. My nipples are dark brown, on the smaller side, and I shave everywhere. I'm a fan of tattoos and have a feather on my foot, flower pieces on my right hip into my lower ribs, left shoulder, and lower back, a small script piece in my left side bra line, a green carebear in my left bikini line and a large dream catcher down my left ribs. If there's a detail I've left out, feel free to ask ;)
What a week. 18 year old me had gone from a dry spell since AIT and graduation to a blow job, facial, and quick hard sex with a married captain at my first duty station. I was falling fast and hard for him. I wanted him to want me. I wanted him to think of me when he thought of being intimate. I wanted to be his release to do everything she wouldn't.
Dustin snapped me this morning, a pic of his obvious buldge greeting my day. "How's my little Private this morning? I wish you were here to help with this"....You have no idea Dustin. Now that the bandaid has been ripped off, I want nothing more than to keep going. I send him a snap back of my semi sheer, black athletic thong, holding it open in the front with the caption "you could drop your load right in here sir". Naughty I know. For some reason, the thought of him filling my underwear with cum is erotic and in the moment, I crave the feel of his warmth between my legs.
"Come by the house on your lunch break and you can have it" I get in reply. Fuck.
I get dressed in my camo uniform with a generic sports bra and the same black athletic thong underneath and try make it through the morning as routinely as possible. Not possible. All I can think of is what I'm willing to do for the married man I'm lusting for and it's got my mind anywhere but at work.
Dustin let's me know he left early for lunch so he's ready whenever I am. The whole drive over, my mind is racing at the prospect of what's about to happen. I knock and find the door open, with Dustin on the couch, laptop open to some semi sexy photos I'd sent to tease him over the last week while he strokes his firm shaft. "Private Hannah reporting as ordered sir" I say as sexily as I can muster in the spur of the moment.
"Private Hannah, you said you'd found a place to hold my cum" completely keeping character.
"Yes sir" I say, stepping around to stand in front of him, undoing my belt and the buttons on my pants, letting them drop to the floor around my ankles.
"Open up then, I'm already close since you decided to be late"
I hold open the front of my black athletic thong, exposing my shaved pubic area for his inspection.
"At least you remembered to shave to start the week" he says and he builds the pace of his stroking and touches the tip of his penis against my smooth skin. In moments I see him start to swell as he nears his release. A thick rope of white cum erupts from his tip and is followed by a second, third, and fourth. My underwear is filled with his thick, warm release and soon its soaked, mixing with my own minor arousal that has built at the situation. As he finishes, I let go of my waistband and allow my cum soaked thong to cling to my lower lips, teasing me with what could have been.
I pull my pants back up and stand breathless in front of eachother. It's been less than 10 minutes since I walked through the door, we've barely spoken and now his cum is dripping down my inner thigh. What has happened? I feel like an incredibly erotic play thing that's been used for a passing moment of pleasure and right then, I know I'm hooked.
"Hannah, I'm sorry if that was too much" Dustin says, coming to the realization that I'm now back in uniform with his cum filling my panties.
I kiss him square on the lips. "Shhhh babe. I wanted this. I want all of you"
"So you really liked that?"
"Dustin that has got to be one of the hottest things I've ever tried. I'm not changing for work"
I sit on his couch in a pool of his release while we chat for the remainder of our lunch hour. When it's time to go, I feel a glob of him drip down my leg. "Can I come spend the night tonight?" I ask, hoping to get my own release after work.
"Sure hun, I just have a few calls to make but it's okay"
I head back to work with a kiss goodbye and the rest of the day I can feel the stickiness between my legs and it keeps me on edge. I run back to my barracks room, take a fast shower, grab a change of clothes for tomorrow, and something special for tonight. I throw on some gym shorts and a hoodie over my sports bra. Coupled with my slides and I'm back across post and find a note on the door "on a call, be quite when you come in"
I come in and quietly shut the door and make my way past Dustin in the livingroom, obviously on a video chat with someone with the screen facing the wall to the garage. I hear a woman's voice say "oh man those walls are paper thin, I think I just heard the neighbors kids come home from school"
Oh shit, he's on with his wife I realize as I tiptoe my way to the master bedroom where I change into my suprise. Naked in his bedroom, I slip into a teal, sheer lace bra with enough underwire support to give me a little cleavage. I pull on a matching set of panties with an intricate sheer lace front and a single thin string between my cheeks in the back. I fold up my sticky cum soaked thong from earlier and walk back into the livingroom.
Dustin does a double take as I come around the corner. He covers this with a coughing fit as his wife asks if he's okay. "Yeah hun just had an itch in my throat" and they continue chatting, her oblivious to the fact that I've just sat down across from him.
I look him square in the eyes as I begin to tease my dark brown nipples through my sheer lace bra. As he tries to hold a conversation, I do everything I can to lightly tease him. I pinch and massage my breasts, softly run a finger between my legs on top of my lacy bottoms. I stand up and start to stretch, bending forward to let my small breasts hang just out of sight of his camera before turning around and bending forward, reaching back to spread my bum and letting the g-string bury itself between my cheeks, barely keeping my other tight hole from view.
I turn back around and unfold the sticky thong he came in earlier and hold it up for him to see the stain his release left on them, right between the legs. I pull my teal lace thong down in the front, and standing right behind his computer, I begin to lightly tease myself with the soft fabric of the back athletic thong, gently massaging my clit, resoaking the nearly dry panties with another round of sexual arousal.
As my arousal grows, I gradually push into my slick entrance and with one finger and then another, the soft athletic fabric of my underwear once again getting soaked as I rub my clit with them, teasing myself with the over stimulating feel against my raw bundle of nerves. I squat down, my face now right behind the computer screen as I squeeze my breast and open my mouth in a silent moan, performing for the man who can't respond.
All of a sudden I stop, ending my tease at the edge of release, not wanting to slip and give away what's going on...and to tease Dustin further. I stand up, place the arousal and cum soaked black thong on the table right behind his laptop and I walk to the kitchen and begin working on dinner with whatever ingredients I can scrounge up in the kitchen. It's such a turn on to do such a normal task in such a small set of lingerie and I secretly hope that Dustin is sneaking peeks at me from across the house.
At long last I feel warm, strong hands wrap around my waist and a kiss finds my cheek. "How's my baby girl, you little tease?"
I blush at the pet name the gentle touch. "I'm almost done, go sit down you silly boy" I say as I start to plate our dinner of chicken and grilled veggies, sauntering into the dining room like a server at one of those lingerie sports bars.
"So you sure know how to put on a show, Hannah" Dustin says as we begin to eat
"I can be anything you want me to be" I say as I begin a speech I'd thought through in my head, telling Dustin that I don't want casual, I want to be the girl he craves, the one who does the things that no one else does, who let's him try the things he's only imagined I'm his wildest sessions alone with himself.
"What do you get out of all of this?" He asks, questioning this step towards commitment.
"I get to explore myself and act out my cravings without having to deal with all the rumors of barracks and searching for guys to feel safe with. I don't want to be your wife. I just want you to forget her when your with me, and I want you to think of me when you choose how to play"
"Well if you're going to explore, we're going to have to push you out of your comfort zone and actually find new places and things to try"
My heart is racing as fantasies flood through my mind. "What do you have in mind?"
"Just play along with different roles and we'll see what happens baby girl"
Baby girl....is this role number one? Does Dustin think that with our 8 year age gap and my petite frame that we could play out what I think he wants to play? I did just tell him that I want to be the one he thinks of.
"Yes daddy"
"Good Girl"
I. Am. Wet.
"So what did you have in mind for dessert baby girl?"
I stand up, clean up, take Dustin by the hand. "These can end up on the floor too" i say motioning to my sheer lingerie.
"Not yet" he replies, guiding me back to the bedroom.
I find myself once again on Dustin's bed, this time guided into the center, onto my hands and knees. With gentle pressure between my shoulder blades, I drop to my elbows, arching my back and exposing my entrances to open view, my modesty preserved only by the thin g-string buried between my cheeks.
Dustin pulls that to the side, bringing my arousal fully into view. I shudder as a soft, wet tongue traces it's way teasingly between my parted lips, beginning at the bundle of nerves aching in my core and ending in the tight wet hole that's been longing to be filled since I started my teasing back at lunch. I moan a soft sigh of want as Dustin licks me again and again, using his thumbs to spread me open before teasing the inner entrance of my now soaked vagina with his oral stimulation.
After a few breathless minutes of almost over the edge teasing with his tongue, Dustin traces his tongue higher. My eyes go wide and my breath catches in my throat as his tongue glides across my other hole. After a brief pause, he repeats his elongated trail of tongue teasing a second and third time, ending on my bum every time.
I moan "Don't stop, daddy" as his tongue lingers on my hole, swirling around my rear entrance as his calloused fingers reach between my legs to tease my clit. I am so close as his tongue makes headway into my hole which is opening up for him at his constant stimulation.
"I'm going to fill you up baby girl" Dustin leans down and whispers in my ear, his tongue momentarily replaced by his thumb pressing further into my bum, slick with his saliva.
"Please daddy" I moan in reply, eager to keep my promise to do everything his wife won't do.
Dustin pulls away completely and reaches into his wife's nightstand. I see him pull out a bottle of lube and a silver plug with a red jeweled heart on the end, still in its packaging, unopened, unplayed with. I know what's coming and why we're playing this out right now.
Dustin removes the plug from its package and holds it tip first up to my lips. I know what he wants without saying a word. I stick out my tongue and lightly tease the cold metal tip, softly swirling circles around it, further and further down until I bob my head down, taking the whole plug in my mouth and closing my lips around the base. I look up at Dustin, the jeweled heart of the plug between my lips and softly moan in anticipation.
He pulls it out of my mouth and I seductively tease the tip one last time. "Wanna stick it in my ass daddy?" I beg as sexily as possible. After a few seconds of fumbling around with the lube bottle, I feel the cold liquid land on my hole, followed by a finger gently probing my already relaxed entrance. A moment later, the finger is replaced by the cold lubed plug and my breath catches in my throat as I stretch around the plug before closing down tightly on the base. Dustin moves my g-string back into place, covering my soaking wet lips and holding the plug firmly in my butt.
I look back at him pleadingly. I know I teased you hard earlier but if you stop now, this is just cruel. "Daddy please" I say breathlessly, not wanting the stimulation to stop while also acutely aware of the fullness inside my rear.
"Please what?"
"Please fuck me daddy"
"You have two options Hannah. You teased me, so this is a tease for you. You can go to bed, right now, right like this, or you can get your punishment and then a reward like a good girl. Bed or a spanking, your choice"
"Spank me Daddy" I beg without a moment's hesitation
smack the sharp crack of Dustin's hand on my bare cheek takes me by suprise and I clench hard on the plug inside my bum. "Oh fuck daddy" I moan in a mix of pain and pleasure. smack smack smack come three more successive blows, landing on alternating cheeks. I moan almost tearfully as my arousal builds to the point that I'm literally ready to beg for release.
"Daddy please fuck me. Do whatever you want just let me cum please"
A firm tug pulls my g-string down to my knees, still on all fours with my face in the pillows. A hard shaft rubs between my lower lips, finds my eager entrance, and in one firm thrust is buried all the way inside me. I cry out, looking back over my shoulder at Dustin who looks like a man possessed with the overwhelming urge to use me for his pleasure, and in that moment, it's all I want as well.
His firm hands grip my hips and I arch my back, throwing myself back against him to meet his own rapid thrusts. My cheeks clap a faster and faster pace as the overwhelming feeling of being completely filled mixes with the intense pleasure of the moment. I'm red faced and breathless, moaning Dustin's name as he continues in an unrelenting pace, thrusting in and out, in and out. At one point he pulls my face out of the pillows, gripping my long dark hair by my ponytail and commands "You're gonna be a good girl and cum for daddy"
He releases my hair but I remain facing forward, head up and moaning through the moment "Yes daddy, oh my fuuuuuuuuuckkkk" comes from my innocent lips as he simultaneously pulls out the buttplug and buries himself all the way inside me as I can feel him swell and begin to release against my cervix.
"That's right daddy, cum inside my pussy" I beg as he thrusts again and again as my inner walls clench down and my own release spills out of me, uncontained as I find one of the strongest orgasms of my life. His thrusts slow and eventually he pulls out, leaving me leaking cum and lube from both my holes.
He returns with a warm towel and begins to clean me off as I sit up, still in my sheer bra, and kiss him firmly on the lips. "That was incredible, daddy" I whisper, my forehead resting against his as he finishes cleaning my sensitive areas.
"Would you like to rinse off?"
I reply yes and he runs us a sensual warm shower, where nothing but gentle washing and a few lingering kisses happens. He's patient as I take extra time under the soothing water and wraps me in a soft towel when I get out.
As we get dressed into comfy pajama shorts and tshirts, I ask "so was I a good girl, daddy?"
"The best. I think we should stick with this role for awhile if you're into it"
After the time I had tonight, I'm more than willing to play along. We discuss some likes and dislikes and limits (nothing that leaves a mark where I'll have to answer questions about it at work), and reagree that none of this is a thing on the few occasions that his wife visits during her internship. And duh, no telling work, that would fuck us both.
We end the night with gentle pillow talk, and he asks if,for the role, I'd be willing to let him help me get dressed in the mornings, helping me pick out bras and undies from a selection of things I'd actually wear to work. I welcome the increased interaction and dedicated time to talk every morning without a second thought, and I fall asleep with his arm wrapped around me from behind, his strong hand under my tshirt, soothingly placed on my bare stomach, just below my belly button and just teasingly far enough into the area covered by a bikini. I'm in heaven.

11 Shows in 7 Days! An extensive review of my week on Broadway seeing majority of the shows from the front row!
Hello! I wanted to come by here and talk about my recent time on Broadway a couple weeks back. This trip has been years in the making, but I was only able to make it happen this year as I thought I would go all out for my 25th birthday and celebrate being halfway through my 20’s in New York City. The last time I was in the city was way back in 2019 to which I squeezed 5 shows in three days. I’m from Washington State so it isn’t that easy of a trek, which is why I managed to squeeze 11 shows in a span of 7 days. I had four double show days, of which I loved. I prefer seeing shows from the front row because of the added immersiveness factor, not to mention just being so close to the actors that allows you to see and feel the show in a much more intimate manner. Most of the shows I saw on this trip were from the front row with the exception of Sweeney Todd. I go into ranking those seats towards the latter part of this post! Musical theater has helped me heal so much in the past and there wasn’t a better way of doing a “reset” than seeing shows back to back. I also wanted to utilize this post to disclose what I personally thought about each show I saw.
This will be a pretty extensive post so without further adieu, here we go!
Day 1
https://preview.redd.it/kubacnk0rn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf56c01806fa9d74f5fb24f0bbc994412da3e94b
Hell’s Kitchen (matinee)
Thoughts: I came out of this show kind of realizing why it got the amount of Tony nominations that it got. It definitely caters to the masses as the plot was fairly easy to follow and my god were the actors STELLAR! Literal jaw drop when Shoshana Bean made her first entrance - a true icon in the flesh. I also wasn’t expecting to come out of this show crying as “No One” really got to me since I have such a close bond with my mom. Such a high energy show and it was the perfect show to start my week in the city!
Front Row thoughts: (AA106) I’m 5’9 and didn’t have to break my neck looking up except for when they were utilizing the very top most part of the towers downstage left. Good legroom as well.
Favorite Moment: Jade Milan’s debut as Ali! You can see the amount of support that the cast had for her and to think that this was her very first time doing it w/o any put-ins was beyond astounding. I was so honored to be in the house for her first principal performance!
Notable Mentions: Kecia Lewis - omg she is a star and I was blown away by how moving her performance was as Miss Liza Jane.
Stagedoor Experience: Not too large of a crowd and everyone was very respectful. Most of the ensemble came out to sign, but the only principals that came out were Jade and Kecia.
Other notes: This was a last minute decision and I regret none of it!
https://preview.redd.it/x243flw3rn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9badaacdc5cf6f75842654c46b8a8f740241138a
Lempicka (evening)
Thoughts: I was a lil confused ngl.. I personally just thought that the plot was all over the place but the cast was 10/10! I remember Amber Iman stating in an interview that they want the audience to NEED intermission and that's exactly how I felt after Act 1. I just felt like I needed room to breathe so I could also come into terms of what I just witnessed. I’ve seen several reviews saying that Eden was flat, but she was going all out on this performance.
Front (ish) Row thoughts: Second row on the aisle (B2) - cute lil interaction from some of the ensemble members. You also still get a full view of the stage. Only had to crane my neck up when they were using the topmost platform on stage.
Favorite Moment: Our Time gave me goosebumps. I like the big ensemble moments where you can literally feel their vibrato in your face!
Notable Mentions: Kyle Brown was on for Tadeusz Lempicki. ALSO Jimin Moon is so cute that is all thank u..
Stagedoor Experience: All the principals came out to sign plus a few members of the ensemble! Eden and Amber really took time with everyone.
Other notes: Love the quarter zip that they had available at the merch stand. Easily the most comfortable piece of merch from all the shows I’ve been to.
Day 2
https://preview.redd.it/9hk8cbb5rn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=331b1279a99c93283bea1755b86834d7ea696146
Sweeney Todd - FINAL PERFORMANCE (matinee)
Thoughts: The energy in the theater for the final performance was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Everyone was just so excited and you could definitely feel it. Every seat had a reusable Sweeney tote bag as a token for the final show.
Seat Location & Thoughts: First row of the second mezz (MMEZZ A121) - Perfect view of everything. I was surprised that I could still see the facial expressions of everyone on stage.
Favorite Moment: Literally the entirety of the show! Sutton was such a comedic Mrs. Lovett.
Notable Mentions: Joe Locke!! Exceeded my expectations!
Stagedoor Experience: The craziest stagedoor experience on the trip. I believe people camped out for this closing stage door shortly after the performance began. Very crowded but everyone was mostly respectful. I believe only a few of the principals plus some of the ensemble came out to sign. Aaron, Sutton, and Joe did not.
Other notes: Aaron made a quick appearance at the stagedoor. Just kinda peeked his head out to wave and thank everyone for coming.
https://preview.redd.it/a706yds6rn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71b32c2cc02f4afc13153dea20ce2f26993a721f
Titanique (evening)
Thoughts: I have never laughed so much at a show, but Titanique did just that! Dee was phenomenal! Very campy, kooky krazy!!
Front (ish) Row thoughts: Orchestra D107 - basically the third row but it felt like the front as there was an aisle directly in front of you that was used in the show. It’s also directly beside the spot where Celine makes her initial entrance. I got so much interaction from Celine in which at one point she sat on my lap and caressed my face!
Favorite Moment: The encore of MHWGO at the end of the show
Notable Mentions: Marcus Antonio and Anne Fraser Thomas were the absolute standouts for me in this show!
Stagedoor Experience: I highly debated stagedooring this show, to which I ultimately did but it wasn’t my favorite. I am really shy and the whole stagedoor was basically where the balounge was downstairs and it was mostly friends of the actors having their post show mingle with the cast. I was super shy to approach Dee and Lindsay. I ultimately decided not to interact unless they approached me, but was able to get Michael Williams to sign my poster and my program. Super nice dude and took the time to talk to me!
Other notes: It was a trek to get to the Daryl Roth from Sweeney. I didn't do any research to where it was but was a little surprised to find out that it was all the way by Union Square Park.
Day 3
https://preview.redd.it/fwxuksn9rn1d1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=100dfa12112e3e05f49b1a6b9499e0c6960cf34e
Chicago (evening)
Thoughts: I’ve seen Chicago three times (the international tour circa 2014) in Manila but was late to all three times which meant I missed All That Jazz each time. Glad to say I wasn’t late and was finally able to see it live! Robyn Hurder fits the role of Velma and I really love how much she made it her own!
Front Row thoughts: BB106 - You’re right in the heart of the action. The stage was low enough that I didn’t have to tilt my neck all too much. Also the legroom in the front row at the Ambassador is very ample.
Favorite Moment: All That Jazz but also Razzle Dazzle
Notable Mentions: Max Clayton and Michael Scirrotto - I’m just in awe of how beautiful these men are.. hehe
Stagedoor Experience: Bianca and Max Von Essen came out to sign. I was able to tell Bianca how she was my first Roxie Hart way back and how much of an honor it was for me to see her again and now on Broadway!
Other notes: N/A
Day 4
https://preview.redd.it/3licn1yarn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=175781ed8fa1976a7eb2a59d61e79240376c9495
Back to the Future (evening)
Thoughts: Probably the most tech heavy show that I saw on this trip. I had seen the movie for the first time on my plane ride to the city a few days prior and I think it was a good idea to approach the musical with the context from the movie in mind. They had obviously altered a few of the notable parts of the plot to fit the stage adaptation better but I felt like it worked pretty well. The special effects on this show were absolutely amazing. Casey Likes has such a great stage presence.
Front Row thoughts: (Center Orch A111) Absolutely loved being front row and center for such a tech heavy show. However, the stage at the Winter Garden was probably one of the higher stages on this trip. The only thing that really bothered me about this show was the audience etiquette of the family behind me who were obviously translating the show for their youngest daughter without trying to be mindful of those around them as they were conversing in full on regular speaking voice and not hush hush. I glared at them midway through act 1 but to no avail so I had to bring in an usher to talk to them at intermission to which it did nothing as this continued throughout the whole second act. All that aside, ALSO SPOILERS AHEAD: When it came time to fly the car out for the finale, it was cool to be in such close proximity to the actual robotic arm/mechanism that flips the car upside down over the audience. I got to say hi to Casey and Roger as the car was slowly going upside down!
Favorite Moment: Something About That Boy was such a cute act 1 finale and something about that song is so catchy!
Notable Mentions: Hugh Coles was a standout! Will Branner was also on for Biff at this show!
Stagedoor Experience: Jonalyn, Aaron, Katie, Jelani, JJ, and Casey came out to sign!
Other notes: N/A
Day 5 - My Birthday!
https://preview.redd.it/m2k1dwacrn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=139ec86d41f08401550819df654eb54d377960b0
Cabaret at The Kit Kat Club (matinee)
Thoughts: HOLY FUCK! I’ve never experienced such an immersive theater going experience. From the shots of peach schnapps as you enter the theater, to how much they’ve transformed the August Wilson, I was gagged. I want to preface this by saying that I went into this musical completely blind with only the most recent west end cast recording to kind of give me a rough idea of the show’s plot. No regrets there. I guess I came out of that show feeling a little underwhelmed. I literally remember verbally uttering the words “thats it?” during the finale blackout. However with all that aside, the cast was absolutely superb. Experiencing Bebe Neuwirth in the flesh was sort of an out of body experience.
Front (ish) Row thoughts: First row of the new West Mezzanine (Mezz 4 Row A Seat 220). Don’t get me wrong, these seats were absolutely perfect with just the right amount of being so close to the action, yet being at a good distance away from the stage to take everything in as a whole. However, I was reading a few reviews of the west mezz prior to going in and had heard about the bias of performing towards the “real” side of the house. Here are my thoughts around that - It's true - there was a clear bias to performing towards that side of the house. I felt as if they were really only looking at our side because they had to. Don’t get me wrong, I could see their effort at performing and catering to both sides of the house, but you end up feeling a little disconnected as most of the numbers do cater to the “real” side of the house. All that aside, it was still a great experience!
Favorite Moment: When Sally initially gets introduced, she literally walks through the first row of the west mezz. I was a little shookt as the space was a little tight but she gets through to the other side witn no problem! I got a cute little moment with her as she momentarily complimented my outfit as she puts her hand on my face to pinch my cheeks!
Notable Mentions: The ensemble was absolutely superb and took the immersiveness of the show to another level! I would definitely splurge on stage side seating the next time I go because you get so much more interaction from them!
Stagedoor Experience: Eddie was the only one who came out to sign.
Other notes: I purchased the Pineapple Room upgrade and it was worth it in my opinion. There was just a bit of confusion earlier on in the experience. I was under the assumption that the Pineapple Room was its own lounge, to which it is! However, the thing that I didn’t realize (and it wasn’t really clear in the emails that they send you) was that the actual experience starts once they open the doors to the actual house as it’s a room that's off to the side of the east mezz. That’s where they seat you and if you were going solo like me, you get paired up with another person going solo. I got to share a full bottle of champagne with another gentleman who only had a couple of glasses. So in actuality I had a whole bottle of champagne to myself! The attendants were super nice! The room had three private bathrooms which were a luxury! No lines at all to go to the restroom and they were clean! The whole room also acts as your coat check, as you can leave your belongings in there but they do ask you to take everything back with you after intermission. Getting to the east mezz from the west mezz is a trek so you do have to be mindful of that! The attendants also found out it was my birthday and once I was back in the lounge during intermission for desserts, I had found a cute little handwritten note as well as a free bar of toblerone from them. I can confidently say that this was one of the highlights of my trip!
https://preview.redd.it/mo2c94fdrn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d10ca2ed765c4a6571dd59aeb40ec978cdea6955
Wicked (evening)
Thoughts: It was nice to see the show that started it all for me! Being in the Gershwin was just such a special moment for me on this trip. Wicked was my introduction to musical theater and seeing it for the first time on Broadway was truly something really special to me. This marked my 5th time seeing Wicked after seeing the international tour cast in Manila years ago with Suzie Mathers as Glinda and Jemma Rix as Elphaba. MKM and Alexandra Socha were such a delightful pair and it was nice to see their fresh take on the role!
Front Row thoughts: (ORCH BB110) Wicked’s front row was TIGHT. Probably the tightest front row seat on this trip.
Favorite Moment: There's just nothing compared to seeing defying gravity happen right in front of your eyes. No matter how many times I've seen the show, it always feels like my first time whenever we get to that point.
Notable Mentions: n/a
Stagedoor Experience: Jordan, Jake, and Brad came out to sign.
Other notes: As much as I love Wicked, I truly felt like I could’ve skipped this and seen The Outsiders instead, but there isn’t anything like saying you’ve seen Wicked on Broadway! Also, the last time I saw the show was in 2014, but I was a little taken aback by Thank Goodness and how the platform Glinda stands in was just a tad bit off the center. I think I remember it being much more centered the last time I saw it, but maybe that’s just my mind playing tricks on me.
Day 6
https://preview.redd.it/94u3ubeern1d1.jpg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=979a1bc61d642a8690288709c367c4deec2a5647
The Great Gatsby (matinee)
Thoughts: It still boggles my mind that the only Tony nom this show received was for costume design. This show probably had one of the more elaborate set pieces that really draws you in. All the principals were really on their game and I have nothing bad to say about them and this production! The only comical thing I can say was how they did Myrtle’s death. I feel like they could’ve been a little more creative than how it came to be as it was merely a flail and fall to the floor moment. I think this was the show that I had high expectations for and I was not let down!
Front Row thoughts: (Center Orch B108) The leg room was ample and the stage was at a good height that it didn’t cut off the performer’s feet. My only complaint was how tight the seats were at the Broadway Theatre.
Favorite Moment: New Money had me gagged!!
Notable Mentions: We started with a full company but Sarah Chase was out of the show after intermission with Ryah Nixon stepping in for her. It was such a great experience seeing two Myrtles in one show! Ryah was great and props to her for going on at the last minute!
Stagedoor Experience: All the principals except for John and Sara came out to sign. I believe a couple ensemble members also came out. Everyone at the stage door was also super respectful to the cast as well as the fans. I was half expecting it to go the other way around as the majority of the principals have such a huge following.
Other notes: Was not expecting the gunshot to be as loud as it was. Like I can usually prepare myself for it, but this one shookt me with how loud it echoed in the theater.
https://preview.redd.it/xbc46ghfrn1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b224a8a7fc3df6cb64b028f1c491bf949983589
The Notebook (evening)
Thoughts: Where do I even begin with this show? I wasn’t expecting for me to love this show as much as I did prior to seeing it and all the mixed reviews that it got. This show easily ranks as number 1 for the entire trip. I came into this without knowing anything about The Notebook like I had an idea of what it was but I’ve never seen the movie nor read the book. My only source of knowledge beforehand was about 5 songs from the cast recording and even then I couldn’t make myself listen to the whole thing because I wanted to see it with no spoilers. I’m honestly glad that I went in blind because it took me on such a wild roller coaster ride that I want to ride over and over again. I wasn’t really expecting myself to cry but I was sobbing by the end of act one and was even more of a mess by the end of act two. I was moved in ways I didn’t expect and they timed the comedic moments perfectly to counteract a heavy scene that just occurred.
Front Row thoughts: (Center Orch B106) I was expecting to get wet from the rain scene but it wasn’t really that big of a deal! I loved being front row for this show for the sole reason that Joy Woods belts My Days literally like a foot away from you. The stage was at the perfect height that it didn’t require any neck breaking.
Favorite Moment: I Wanna Go Back was the first song that made me cry out of the blue. I didn’t expect it as it kind of just happened. Another notable moment was during the finale when everyone was on the walk-around part of the stage and Dorcas was directly in front of me while I uttered the words thank you as I sobbed my eyes out. She replied with another thank you and that meant a lot. I thanked her for that moment when I met her at the stage door!
Notable Mentions: John Cardoza! Holy fuck can that boy sing!
Stagedoor Experience: A few of the principals came out to sign as well as the majority of the ensemble. It was such an honor for Mary Ann to come out and sign.
Other notes: I need it to tour already because I would pay good money to see it again live! I have no words to describe how much I’ve fallen in love with this show. I’m kind of just at a loss for words with how much this has moved me.
Day 7
https://preview.redd.it/83btcjzgrn1d1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4ccc6d4f98d2e95869838ca8011816186b1bef5
& Juliet (evening)
Thoughts: Beautiful used to be my favorite jukebox musical, but this is now number one! Very pop-y as expected but the songs worked so well and just intertwined with the plot seamlessly. This performance was also Oliver Tompsett’s broadway debut! The energy in the house was electric and his first entrance was one hell of a moment!
Front Row thoughts: (Orch A108) I wasn’t expecting to say this, but this show probably had the best front row. I’ve heard of reviews detailing how high and close the stage was to this front row, but it worked in my favor due to my height as I was eye level with the stage. The seats were roomy and the leg room was ample. The only downside was some of the props hindering your view of the stage during two numbers in the show. That wasn’t a big deal and was honestly not a problem.
Favorite Moment: Roar gave me goosebumps but also That’s the Way It Is!
Notable Mentions: Literally e v e r y o n e
Stagedoor Experience: All the principals came out except for Ben and Betsy. Almost everyone in the ensemble also signed!
Other notes: Seeing those costumes up close was breathtaking. So much attention to details! Everyone in this show also smelled so good. Obviously being that close, you're able to smell fragrances but I'd just like to say that Betsy Wolfe smells like eucalyptus and mint which I think fits her personality! Hope that's not too weird.. SKJDFGHKSAJDGH

2024.05.20 22:04 DaBooch69 Homeless Toon Roundup as of 5/20

Five months on the dot! It's been a WHILE since I've done one of these. For those who likely have no idea what I'm about to go on about, this is a recurring series of posts I do every odd update or so that catalogues the state of most teams in the game, identifying which characters and teams I consider "homeless", aka characters that have no place in the current meta.
But first, I have to cover the graduates, or characters who I no longer consider homeless:
* Ghost Spider and Noir: Raid team. Again. That's just sad Gwen. At least Noir still has Crucible synergies. The Raid team we all expected to be ass outside of Raids, but have seemingly turned out to be....decent?! Still not building you. I don't care what the Showcase events say, I'm not building more Spiderverse characters!
* Deadpool- He got a stun. All he really needed was a good team, and now he's pretty good. Not much else to say really.
*Cap and Women Cap- The two most obnoxious toons in existence. I did not like fighting a Rebirth with a beefy Cap, and now I hate fighting an OOT with a beefy Cap even more. Carter clears every point of damage you do, and that Immuni-Taunt haunts me in my dreams. And now you're a legendary requirement! Good luck....
* Namor- He did it. He actually did it. The valedictorian of the Homeless University found a team. The team responsible for the greatest community uproar and event disaster in recent history, but a team none the less. I still like Cabal though, sue me.
* Carnage and Venom- A good Raid team outside of Raids. I didn't think it would happen, but Symbiotes 2.0 has arrived and it is glorious. Speed Bar, AB, effect spreading, and now Carnage doesn't do that stupid effect clear on his special! Ooh, the good old days of piling effects in Raids with the Goopy Boys is back!
* Doom- Through virtue of being a top pick for the empty Cabal slots alone you count. You really should have been on Cabal proper, I have no clue why they snubbed you.
And now, the team ranking. Each team ranked in different categories based on how I see them in the current meta. If you don't see a team on here, assume they're top of the meta and are currently dropping your Arena rank.
Still Really Good But Not Exactly Meta
* Infinity Watch- Crucible reminded everyone that Immunity+Safegaurd on spawn is still absolutely amazing.
* Rhino, Electro, Spider Slayer, Shocker- The leftovers of Sinister Six that somehow end up still being really good.
* Weapon-X- You might be losing Wolfie, but gonna be honest it's not the biggest loss.
* War Dogs- I love these guys now. The second BP gets a kill, the snowball that follows is absolutely beautiful.
* Knowhere- The most boring good War team to play. Don't fight me, you know it's true. Where.
* Bifrost- Raids, ew.
* New Avengers- I am so tired of trying to reroll Goblin trials.
* Pegasus- Raids, ew-Oh Kestrel's here.
* Spider Society- Nope. Still not building them.
* Tangled Web- I'm going to find the guy that came up with Weaver and smother them.
* Spiderman Big Time- Fuck Green Goblin Trials double Big Time node. Fuck you. FUCK YOU.
* Eternals- On the cusp of being meta again.
* Cabal- Temporal Dimension didn't happen, you all just hallucinated Node 7.
* Underworld- The objective best War team.
* A-Force- Girls get it done, but now with Photon Marshmallows!
* Undying- Paywall for the whole family!
* Heroes for Hire- The Simpsons Prediction of War Defense teams.
* Masters of Evil- Kang is slipping away and soon you will be too. You exist entirely to counter War Dogs, and now that Vibranium Tuning is long dead, I can feel the relevance slipping. Ultron deserves better.
* New Warriors- "Aw shit, Gwenpool died now what."
* All the Horsemen Teams- The ever pressing dread of the passage of time is terrifying. Soon these guys are going to be irrelevant and that hurts.
Kinda Ass but not entirely Ass
* Web Warriors, Bionic Avengers, Rebirth, Secret Avengers, Invaders, and basically every Raid Team from the past year- The best scam ever invented was Raid Teams. These guys fell off hard.
* Every other X-Man- Those reworks were shit, and you know it. X-Factor is way too squishy and can be easily shut down, Astonishing is still too tied to Raids and lacks sufficient damage or effect building, and Uncanny lacks momentum and relies too heavily on Charges.
* Silver Surfer
* Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch- Man, remember when teams got buffed and it was the ENTIRE TEAM? These two are technically ok, but were done insanely dirty. Witch can heal decently and extend buffs, while Strange can clear, but both aren't amazing at doing those things and are usually slotted out on their respective teams.
* Zemo- Give him a buff. Anything. Make a Thunderbolts team that isn't Skillitary 2. PLEASE. He's got good speed, a decent kit, and an awesome design, but just can't keep up anymore. If he got some speed and stat tweaks, a stun on his ult, and full effect clear on his special, we could be ballin'.
* Black Order- No Safegaurd, no Speed, no service. Your original counter still walks all over you. That's kinda sad. As long as someone can clear positive effects and stun, this team is always going to lag behind.
* Symbiotes- Character unlocks that required maxing out gold spending milestones? In today's economy? Yeah Symbiotes got done dirty too. Honestly, their kits are still really good, they're just stuck with 2020 stats.
* Dark Hunters, Younger Avengers, Ravagers, Hero Asguardians, Marauders- The relics of the War meta from a year ago-WHAT DO YOU MEAN EMMA'S AN OML REQUIREMENT?!? You can kinda get by with Dark Hunters, but the others have long since fallen off the totem poll. When A-Force has been to clear all of the defense teams in this bunch since release, there's not much really that can be done.
* Rest of Infestation
YOU'RE TRASH
* Skillitary- Where you ever any good? Like at all? You're just kind of annoying. Red Guardian is a decent pre-taunter, but Yelena's kit does basically nothing except one disrupted, Punisher is stuck with a kit from the game's LAUNCH, and Black Widow is gone to be garbage elsewhere.
* Kree- How Min-Erva has fallen...Yeah Kree was never good. Nick Fury was the only reason anyone built these guys. And they've sucked since launch too.
* Brotherhood. This used to be my favorite team. Magneto ulted, Toad extended, Blob protected, Pyro spread it, and Juggs ended it. Now they're absolutely abandoned because Magneto found a better team. I don't really mourn this team, but I do miss them.
* Pym Tech. The most obnoxious thing to have to clean up. Dodge, dodge, evade, evade. A team this garbage should not take this long to clear.
* Killmonger and M'Baku- The forgotten Wakandans that exist only to pad Campaign nodes. You can kinda make the case that Killmonger could go higher, but M'Baka is firmly bad. If he was a pre-taunter, he could have a role like Drax and Red Guardian, but he doesn't.
* Shadowland, Power Armor, X-Force, Hydra- Remember when War was a fresh mode? I don't. They suck. 2019 stats, all I really need to say.
* Fantastic 4. Buff them for the movie. Marvel's First Family doesn't deserve this low.
* Guardians. All of 'em. Drax is the only one who's seen play since BKT died. And he exists to die.
* Every Minion ever- Whoever thought of the initial Death Scourge nodes needs to talk to me in my office.
* Inhumans- Cheap man's X-Mans.
* Bullseye- Does anyone remember you? The epitome of launch game design. Special that does damage, Ult that does more damage, Passive that buffs one stat, and nothing else. No one even wants you buffed, and your role as a starter player's entrance to Villain Campaign was destroyed with the player's journey update. The new champion of homeless.
* Ultimus- So called "big bad." DD3 reward. Utter shit.
Aaaand that appears to be everyone. Every team, ranked based on current standing in the meta. Feel free to tell me what characters you'd like to see buffed, or if you disagree with my rankings.

Upstaged by Marlon Brando
I thought I had the talent to be an actor. A mercurial classmate gave me second thoughts.
By Alan ShayneMay 20, 2023 Marlon Brando photographed sitting on a chair and holding a book in 1946. Photograph by Cecil Beaton I was eighteen, living in New York, and trying desperately to get work as an actor. It was 1943. I had been drafted, and the plan was to do my time, then study with the help of the G.I. Bill. I’d spent a summer doing Shakespeare but had just been fired from a production where I played a gross, blustering football star. I was a polite boy from Brookline, Massachusetts, and I just couldn’t work myself into the character: smacking men on the back, smearing a chocolate bar on my camel-hair coat. I realized that I had to learn the technique of acting. Everything I’d done so far was instinctive.
The day came for my physical. I went through the routine like an automaton, distancing myself from the hundreds of young men who stood self-consciously in their underwear. One of the doctors took a long time examining my ears. “Perforated eardrums,” he said.
I was free. I got a scholarship at the New School for Social Research, which had a prestigious drama workshop. On my first day, the registrar gave me my schedule: Theory of the Theatre, Acting, March of the Drama, Movement, and Makeup. I signed papers all morning, and then she took me to my group, which was already in session. Ten students were seated at small tables in front of standing mirrors, applying cosmetics to their faces. They stopped and stared as I walked in.
“Alan is joining your class, and I hope you’ll make him feel at home,” the registrar said.
Several boys got up to shake my hand; the girls said hello. One extremely handsome boy, who had drawn a line from the center of his forehead down to his chin, and who had made up half his face in garish war paint, walked over to me. I put out my hand, but he glared and walked out the door. Everyone giggled, and the registrar said, “Don’t mind him. That’s just Marlon trying to get attention.”
One of the boys lent me some makeup, and I sat applying it, looking in the mirror. I wondered if I’d made a mistake. After all, I had experience in a touring company, in summer stock. I’d put on makeup dozens of times. No, I thought, I’ve got to study—that crazy boy with the war paint had just brought me down.
Stella Adler, the most important acting teacher in the country, was coming to lead a class. I was terribly excited. She had been with the Group Theatre, the pioneering New York drama collective, and had actually studied with Konstantin Stanislavski, the originator of Method acting. I had been reading his book “My Life in Art” as if it were the Bible, but I still couldn’t make sense of the Method and how to do it. I was sure Stella Adler would teach me.
She was a half hour late, but no one seemed surprised. Everyone had been talking, sprawled on folding chairs or perched on a raised platform that took up one side of the room. Suddenly, it was quiet. The students shifted their positions and looked toward the double doors, like animals sensing an approach.
There was a waft of expensive perfume, and Miss Adler appeared. Hands rushed to take her umbrella, her bag, her fur coat. “Darlings,” she said, kissing and hugging the students closest to her. They guided her into an armchair, and she reached above her head. “What do you think of my chapeau?” she asked. It was a frothy black cap from which feathers danced whenever she moved. A girl said unctuously, “It’s beautiful, Miss Adler.” She was ignored as Miss Adler shed a suit jacket that revealed a filmy satin blouse. She looked at me. “You must be the new boy,” she said. I felt her eyes peel back the layers of my clothes. “Yes, Miss Adler,” I said. She reached out her hand, and I stumbled over to take it. “I hope you’re very talented,” she said. I stood awkwardly as she looked me over. “Sit down, darling,” she said, and I staggered back to my seat.
For half an hour, she discussed her clothes with the class. “Do you really think this suit is more becoming than the one I wore last week?” Then she listened to everyone’s comments about whether she was better in green or in blue. Finally, she said, as if we had delayed her, “Let’s get to work. Marlon, you lazy boy, get in that chair.”
Marlon hadn’t turned up in any of my other classes, but I had seen him sitting in the hall, playing bongo drums, surrounded by a coterie of admirers. He made a point of not looking at me. One of the students told me that his last name was Brando. The rumor was that he was being kept by a rich, older man and that he had a girlfriend named Blossom Plum.
The class watched as Marlon slumped across the room and fell into a folding chair. He looked as though he had crossed the desert without water. “Now, Marlon, peel an apple,” Miss Adler said. Marlon pantomimed the knife slipping under the skin, then began to peel. He did it so convincingly that it seemed to be in one long piece that kissed the floor. “Now, Marlon, I’m going to say some words to you, and I want you to react accordingly,” Miss Adler said. “Cold . . . hot . . . hungry . . . tired . . . depressed.” I couldn’t believe my eyes. Marlon continued to peel the apple, but each time he heard a word he seemed to change. The metamorphosis was nearly imperceptible, but he actually became cold or hot or hungry. I thought, My God, I’ll never be able to do that. The class applauded. Marlon slumped back to his chair.
“Our time is up,” Miss Adler sighed. “Now listen. I believe that every actor should be able to do something in addition to acting—like singing or dancing or telling a story. So next time, I want you all to come in with a story, or a poem, or whatever, and perform it as if you were in a cabaret. Is that clear?” There were murmurs of agreement, and then a shuffle of chairs as actors rushed to help Miss Adler with her coat. I sat for a moment in my seat. I knew what I would do: my rendition of “The Devil and Daniel Webster,” the short story by Stephen Vincent Benét, for which I’d won a speaking prize my senior year in high school. I’d show them Marlon wasn’t the only talented one.
The next class with Miss Adler had the palpable charge of opening night. No one would tell anyone what they were going to do. It was all a surprise.
After a show of hands, Miss Adler chose a lanky, blond girl to go first. I had learned her name was Elaine Stritch and that her uncle was high up in the Catholic church, in Chicago. She was wearing a trainman’s overalls and her hair was pulled back. She sat on the floor and strummed her guitar, singing in a haunting, simple voice: “I wonder as I wander out under the sky, how Jesus the Saviour did come for to die.” The class didn’t wait to gauge Miss Adler’s response. Everyone applauded loudly.
I waved my hand in front of Miss Adler’s face. “The new boy seems very eager,” she said. “All right darling, you go next.”
I stepped up onto the platform and was relieved to see that Marlon had left the room. I felt as if I were performing in front of the Queen and her courtiers. It had been two years since I had won the speaking prize, but I remembered every word of the Benét story. I was nervous in the beginning, but I felt a new authority as I acted out several different parts, all with different accents and personalities. I told the story of the Devil’s battle with Daniel Webster to possess a man’s soul. I grew more and more impassioned. I felt transported to the New England farm where the story took place, and I became very moved when Webster finally won at the end. I had hardly finished when Miss Adler’s voice trumpeted, “Excellent!” and the class applauded. I went to my seat feeling a camaraderie with the others for the first time.
As soon as I sat down, Miss Adler gestured in my direction. “Now, let’s not be confused that what he did was acting,” she said. “He told a story and put on voices for the different characters. That’s all right for cabaret, which was the assignment, but we mustn’t mix it up with real acting.” Everyone agreed. I didn’t see why it was necessary to diminish my performance in that way.
There was a sudden flurry of activity. The curtains on the platform were drawn and the lights went out. I could make out one of the actors dropping the arm on a record. As the music began, the actor rushed over and pulled the curtains. Standing in the center of the stage, in a pool of light, was a gorgeous woman in a velvet evening dress and long white gloves. The class gasped—it was Marlon in a blond wig. As Judy Garland began to sing—“Zing! Went the strings of my heart”—Marlon began to lip-synch. I realized the record was on at twice the speed so that the sound was comic, as if Marlon had Betty Boop’s voice. The class went to pieces. The students screamed and applauded; several of them slid off their chairs and rocked with laughter on the floor. Through it all, Marlon played it straight. Miss Adler collapsed in her chair. “The Devil and Daniel Webster” had been completely forgotten.
The cabaret incident was the last time I saw Stella Adler. She won a role in a play called “Pretty Little Parlor,” and coaxed her brother Luther into taking over the class. He had also been in the Group Theatre and was a renowned actor, having appeared many times on Broadway. He was in his forties, stocky and short, though he wore lifts in his shoes. He was all business but very warm and helpful. I was finally going to learn the Method that was beginning to be the basis of all good acting.
On his first day, Mr. Adler gave us an exercise in improvisation: we were all to be chickens in a barnyard. We would hear on the radio that war was declared, and we had to react as chickens—to decide whether we were married, leaving our chicken families to go off to war, or whether we were single and awaiting the draft. I looked around. Students started clucking as they moved on their knees toward each other. Some of the girls grabbed boys and acted as if they were their husbands. I had always been uncomfortable with improvisation, so I decided that I was a loner who didn’t like the other chickens. I sat and sulked and managed to get through the ordeal.
Around that time, auditions began for the big student play of the year: Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” This was very exciting. I’d acted in “Much Ado About Nothing” in Boston, learning the rudiments of doing Shakespeare, and I’d got my scholarship by reciting one of his soliloquies. I went to the audition feeling confident, but discovered that all the boys were trying out for Duke Orsino, the part that I wanted. Everyone had to read for the director, Erwin Piscator, who was also the head of the workshop. He was a slight man, around fifty, beautifully dressed and with meticulously combed silver hair. He had been famous in Germany for doing epic theatre, a movement that stressed the political content of drama. He had escaped the Nazis and now sat hunched at the front of the auditorium.
I was startled to see Marlon, who hadn’t been around much. I’d heard that he’d been raving about “Good Night, Sweet Prince,” a biography of John Barrymore, the renowned Shakespearean actor, that had just been published. He was laughing at rumors that Barrymore, a known alcoholic, had peed on the floor of his dressing room when people came to praise a performance. I thought it was sad that a great actor resorted to such low tricks for attention, but I wasn’t surprised that Marlon was taken in by them. As usual, he looked right through me as we waited in the wings. I couldn’t understand why I annoyed him, but I put it out of my head. I could hear the boys who went before me, and none of them seemed exciting. Marlon was the worst. He mumbled his way through, making no sense of the words or the iambic pentameter. When my turn arrived, I forgot about the others, succumbing to the thrill of being onstage, the pleasure of reading such beautiful lines. Piscator thanked each of us. A few days later, a cast list was posted. I was Duke Orsino.
On the first day of rehearsal, we were all a little nervous. Piscator had directed the greats of Europe, and we were just kids trying to find our way. He settled in the front row and looked up. “Alright, begin,” he said. I started to speak the opening lines, and Piscator jumped out of his seat. “No, no, no,” he shouted. “You Americans are so afraid of the poetry.” He came onstage and walked over to me. “You have one of the most beautiful speeches in Shakespeare,” he said. “It must be like a rhapsody. Your voice should sound like a cello. Now begin again.”
After weeks of rehearsal, we were ready. There were two opening shows: one in the afternoon, for the school, friends, and agents, and an official première in the evening. Around noon, I began putting on makeup backstage. My costume was stunning: a red doublet with a diamond pattern, red tights, a navy-blue blouse with puffed sleeves, and a silver cape. I was just finishing combing my hair when Piscator walked into the dressing room. “Good afternoon, Mr. Piscator,” everyone said. “Good afternoon,” he replied. “I just came to say merde.” The French word for “shit’” was traditional in the theatre for wishing someone luck. It made us feel very professional.
Piscator walked over and stood beside my chair. “There’s been a bit of a problem,” he said, “but I think we’ve solved it very well.” I asked him what it was. “You see,” he said, “Stuart’s mother is very ill, so he had to go to Washington last night, and he can’t get back in time for the performance. He’ll be here tonight, but we had to get someone to take his part this afternoon. Of course, it’s only eight lines, so it’s not that difficult.” I blanched. Stuart’s part was the priest—the hardest moment in the play for me. It was the scene when the Duke finds out that the woman he loves has apparently just married his manservant, who seems to be in love with the Duke. All hell breaks loose, and the priest is summoned to confirm the ceremony.
“Who’s going to play it?” I asked. The director beamed. “Marlon has been good enough to help us out,” he said. “It’s very nice of him.”
Of all the actors, I thought. “Can we rehearse before the curtain?”
“There’s no time, unfortunately,” he said. “He’s in the costume department now, but he knows his spot onstage. I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
I went onstage, sat on my throne, and listened to the first swells of music. When the curtain rose, I filled my voice with an exhausted yearning. “If music be the food of love, play on . . . .” I nailed the opening scene, striking just the right balance between honest emotion and the beauty of the poetry. As I made my exit—“Away before me to sweet beds of flowers: love-thoughts lie rich when canopied with bowers”—there was a tremendous sound of applause.
The rest of the play went splendidly. Near the end, when I discovered that Olivia, my love interest, had married Cesario, my servant, the priest was sent for. I was deep in character, acting out the conflict between my desire to kill Cesario and my suspicion that he was in love with me, when I heard the audience start to laugh. I turned to see the priest. There was Marlon in a pair of tights, into which he had stuffed a small drum that made him look pregnant. He beat out a rhythm as he mumbled lines that no one could hear. The audience went wild. They laughed. They cheered. They egged him on until he performed a frenzied drum solo. The other actors onstage laughed, too, but I was livid. It was as if the play were totally forgotten. When Marlon finally finished, he left the stage to an ovation, and I had to wait until everyone quieted down. As I spoke, the audience started to laugh again.

Somehow, we finished the play. I walked to the dressing room in a fury. I thought of my past year in New York: never having enough food; losing a tooth because I couldn’t afford a dentist; being self-conscious about my smile; never being warm enough in my thin coat; and waiting on tables for people who seldom even gave me a tip. All to be in the theatre that I loved. But this wasn’t the theatre that I had read and dreamed about. When I entered the dressing room, Marlon was sprawled on a chair with cold cream all over his face.
“How dare you,” I said. “How dare you ruin this play!”
Marlon said nothing. “Aren’t you even going to say you’re sorry?” I asked. Marlon looked away. My frustration was building. “I’ll do everything in my power to keep you off Broadway,” I said. I went to my dressing table and sank into my chair. Piscator whooshed in. “Wonderful, wonderful,” he said. I got up and walked over to him. “Are you going to say anything to Marlon?” I asked.
“My dear, it was wrong, but it was just high spirits,” the director said. “Tonight is the most important performance, and Stuart will be here for it.” I looked at him. He no longer seemed like a great international director. “If you don’t reprimand him for his unprofessional behavior,” I said, “I’m going to leave the school.” Piscator raised his hand in a deprecating gesture, then left the room.
I did the evening performance and never went back again. Marlon Brando was on Broadway within a few months. ♦

2024.05.20 18:44 speasycumpy Recommendations for good presentation software?

Hello. I'm looking for a piece of software like Power Point, but free. I'm familiar with some of the options (Slidebean, Prezi, Libreoffice, Google Docs), but none of them have a specific feature that I'm looking for.
What I'd like to do is have an animated bar graph where the bars rise up one at a time on click. Ideally, I would like to be able to have the axis scale with the bars as they come up (so when the first bar comes up with an 18 it goes all the way to the top, but when a later bar comes up with a 58 the 18 shrinks down to be tiny). I'd also like to add a second layer of bars behind the first set, but that is less of an issue.
Any suggestions would be appreciated and if you have any questions on what I'm trying to do or why I'm trying to do it, I'd be happy to answer.

🎉 Half-year celebration: Should you pull: Jiu Niangzi? (+ Review of ALL upcoming 6* up to 1.9!!!!) 🎉
Verdict: Yes.
Wait, not YES!!!...?

If this post was made 6 months ago, Jiu's pulling recommendation would be on absurd level of yes. After all, a DPS that deals effectively anywhere 10% to 100% more than that of older units would be really broken, right?
That still holds true. Except that 6 months passed, and now Jiu's damage is just nothing unique. Don't get me wrong, Jiu is still broken. It is just that broken units are plentiful now, so it's more that you don't have to feel too pressured that you must pull Jiu no matter what.
...There isn't much to say about Jiu, to be honest: Jiu is extremely simple. Spam her channel skill for [Liquor], gets [Liquor] through buffs of teammates. Get as many [Liquor] as you can. Her damage falls off without proper [Liquor] rotation. But if you do it correctly, her damage is simply uncontested, especially in single target scenario.
Note that you only need 1 copy of her. I don't like people recommending everyone on the website to save 200 pulls for her to be usable. Doing so makes you miss out on so many good units as a F2P, and Jiu already breaks the game even at P0.
Strengths Weaknesses
Incredibly hard hitting unit Deals exclusively damage
Change the entire meta on launch
Very easy to use
Because of how short this review is, I will deliver a very brief review of all upcoming 6*. Happy anniversary, everyone!
Units Review
Ge Tian (Priority: Average) Ge Tian is a good unit, but not an absurdly meta one. There are too many broken units lately, add onto the fact that he is not a woman, which will mean he is likely a skip for the majority of players, especially since he is in the same patch with Jiu. That ultimately says a lot about the state of this game at the moment, as a great unit that brings good damage and utility himself isn't compelling enough for most people to pull. He is even better than many pre 1.6 units! To summarize, Ge Tian is a totally reasonable and balanced unit overall, bringing good Reality damage buff and deals reasonable damage. Overall if you like him, it should be fine to throw a few pulls and see if you can get him early on. Though there is a support that should be more enticing than him coming right up.
Isolde (Priority: YESS!!!) Ugh. I generally don't get too mad about damage dealers powercreeping each other, but when a support deals more damage than a damage dealer... To put it simply, Isolde is massive S++ tier of power and is probably the best choice you can get for that support slot in many teams. Her damage is uncontested, her debuffs are absurd, and overall she is the only reason that I recommend you not to chase for higher Jiu portrays in order to save for her. She has so many values that even outside of Reality team, she is still a legit choice in many [Mental] teams (especially in Raid where her [Burn] just deals so much damage over the course of the fight) and her crit debuffs are just stupid. Her synergy with Burn is also a massive bonus to Spathodea, and even if you don't have Spath you should still chase for her because of how absurd she is. A broken support still has higher value than a broken DPS after all. Isolde is going straight to that broken tier with 6, but unlike 6 who mostly shines in Raid, Isolde just kind of cook so hard in all modes of the game.
Marcus (Priority: High) It is pretty sad for Marcus to be skipped because people are likely to chase for even MORE broken units in the horizon. But it's true that she is still a tad below that broken tier, though she is higher than all of the units we have currently. Marcus hits really hard, deals extremely competitive damage, and did anyone look at her ult animation!? Not much to say, if you don't have a [Plant] DPS, Marcus is just the right choice for you. She simply won't disappoint. Note that you might want to also chase for Vila in addition to Marcus herself, as Marcus is pretty restrictive in terms of team composition, which I admit did hurt her value a bit in terms of pull priority.
Vila (Priority: High) Haha Tooth Fairy part 2. Very funny. Tooth Fairy is just a broken unit overall. For a healer to be at their best, it is usually better for them to just consume... no AP at all. And Vila consumes them more than TF. While TF can generally eats 0 AP over the entire fight, Vila does need to eat AP in order to fuel up her buff, plus her performance outside of Mental team is pretty middling. Still, [Mental] DPS are plentiful, and Vila is a top choice though for your [Mental] team. I would highly recommend chasing for her for your second Limbo team, unless you find yourself suffice with a 6* healer like Yenisei (lol) or MedPoc. Healers like her have a lot of value the longer you play.
Windsong (Priority: Very High) This is probably another case of overreaction getting too far. No, Windsong does not deal double damage to that of Jiu. I don't blame them who believe so though, but it's a testament of how you should not blindly follow those damage charts. Realistically, Windsong's damage is very comparable with Jiu's. Mathematically... that's another case. Her ultimate is such a disgusting skill that I could spend an entire day complaining about how unhealthy it is. What do you mean she need 1 AP to use all of her skills??? Why does she have so many free stats??? The list goes on and on. Her damage is uncontested and put many Mental DPS into unemployment. In essence, Windsong is an incredibly broken DPS, who is going straight to that broken units hall of fame. While her playstyle still needs setup, it is not that hard as many made it out to be.
Lucy (Priority: Very High) Oh hey. Anniversary unit? Busted? Wow. What a way to conclude year 1. Lucy is very, very strong, and is the pinnacle of insane design choices that Bluepoch has been feeding the game lately. Not much to say. Once she ramps up, it is not hard to say that not a single DPS in the game can beat her. Though there has been some notion of her straight up powercreeping Jiu to some extent, I still believe that Lucy is only a bit higher than Jiu in term of strength. Jiu's single target damage is still highly uncontested due to how her kit works, but Lucy does understandably shines in almost any other cases due to her very unhinged damage. Unless you don't like robots or sexy robots in general, I think Lucy is another broken DPS that you shouldn't skip.
Semmelweis (Priority: Below average) Be glad that you get her for free. While Semmel is potentially a very strong unit, she is highly diluted between so many strong units that is much easier to use than her. Her health drain is an interesting niche that could see use in the future with shielders; but right now shielders like Babel have been left in the toilet for a full year, and healers are just much easier to use due to their better survivability in longer modes like Raid. Her damage buff is pretty inconsistent when used with a healer, and you will pretty much gamble on your team not dying to take the full extent of her buff. I still do think that she could see some great usage in the future once we get more units, but at the moment of speaking she isn't going to overtake any supports from their respective team soon, barring HP burning units like Eternity or Erza.
And... This is the end of my review. Happy anniversary, everyone!
