Hi, my name's Aaron and I used to be a chronic procrastinator. When I was younger it didn't matter what the activity was, if it was important I'd find an excuse to put it off. Back in school and college (16-18 yo in the UK) I'd do almost NO work. Whenever I did actually muster the effort to work, it would either be the bare minimum or at the very last minute.
Throughout my life, I've also always been extremely addicted to gaming and YouTube and at times, would spend more than 12 hours a day on these vices, whilst avoiding the important tasks I knew I should be doing. It would even get so bad at times that my family would receive letters and emails from my school and college, telling them how behind I was on all my work. It felt so embarrassing being unable to work without an adult's supervision at 18 YEARS OLD!
Why am I telling you this? To show you that you're not alone with this struggle and that it's actually VERY common. I know many other people who also live just like this, being unable to do the things they should be doing.
I know how horribly painful it can feel to have the desire to improve your life and to know what you SHOULD be doing but feeling unable take action on those things. I know how much it can hurt your sense of self worth, destroy your confidence and make you hate yourself.
Luckily, after years of constant procrastination, I was able to overcome it as soon as I understood this:
Procrastination is an emotional problem that occurs when a task invokes more negative emotions than positive emotions. These negative emotions could be things like stress, sadness, anxiety or anger. When we feel these negative emotions, it's only natural for us to want to eliminate them as quickly as possible. This is why you procrastinate.
You may turn to things like tv, gaming, porn, junk food or binge watching YouTube because it provides a temporary relief from those negative feelings. We procrastinate because humans are emotional creatures that prioritize our current state over our future state.
Logically, we know that procrastination damages our lives in the long term but we are evolved to favor short term rewards over long term rewards. This is why eating ice cream and watching Netflix may sound more appealing than going to the gym even though you know which one you SHOULD be doing.
So now you know why you procrastinate, the solution is obvious. It's to uncover what's causing you to feel negative emotions towards a task and deal with that problem. This can usually be some kind of subconscious fear.
Some of the common causes of procrastination include:
The reason itself may often vary from person to person but ultimately, you have to find out what's causing those negative emotions of yours and then, tackle that issue.

2024.05.21 16:19 beeby8 How do I save my family from falling apart and we get our lives back?

So I am 26 years old. I am from Melbourne Australia. I am single and I live with my mother, my step-dad, my brother and my sister in law who have just moved back in recently after having moved out of home 3 years ago, but have moved back in to save money to eventually move out into the country somewhere. They are not really city/suburb people. The prefer regional/rural areas.
Anyway, the problem in our family is my step dad. I would say for the last 5-6 years, he has withdrawn alot from us. He spends the majority of his time (when he is not at work) sitting outside smoking, drinking and watching YouTube videos on his phone. We barely see him except for weekends because he works the afternoon/evening shifts.
When we do see him on weekends, he barely ever wants to do anything with us. We are always inviting him out to do things with us, but the majority of the time, he says no and uses the excuse of staying home to look after the dogs to get out of it. The only thing that we really do anymore is watch our show together on Saturday nights (if we haven't got something on, which we often do), but even that he is starting to lose interest in.
He also get sick quite often. He has a really bad cough due to his heavy smoking. I have never smoked in my life. My mum, brother and sister in law have, but they have all given up regular cigarettes now and either vape or use marijuana. I would honestly prefer if they just ditched the vapes and just smoked the marijuana to be honest and I have never had a problem with people who smoke pot as long as you do it safely and don't drive on it. It smells way better than cigarettes or the horrible artificial smell of vapes. Anyway, that's not the point.
He (my step dad) has also claimed to be on a meat and dairy only diet for the past couple of years now, basically the complete opposite of a vegan, yet we constantly see him eating bread, chips and other regular foods that are not part of his carnivore diet. He also makes a massive mess in the kitchen every time he cooks his food and never cleans it up because he cooks and attempts to clean in the dark without the light on.
We all think (myself, mum, my brother and sister in law) all think he had some severe health problems like potentially lung cancer and maybe even early onset dementia, but her just will not go to the doctor.
My brother and sister in law even said that one of the main reasons they moved out in the first place 3 years ago was because of how uncomfortable they felt around him and now they are saying the exact same thing again. They said it again literally tonight.
He also does not have a very good relationship with either of his biological children (my step brother and step sister). He says that he wishes that he talked to and saw them more, yet he makes little to no effort to see them or spend time with them outside of special occasions like birthdays, despite the fact that his son lives 10 minutes around the corner. His daughter lives a few hours away, but you would think he would make the time to see her more often, especially since his daughter now has a daughter, making him a grandfather.
He also sleeps in a completely separate room to my mum too which I believe severely impacts their relationship. Couples who do not sleep in the same bed together (for the most part) I believe do not wore every well in general. Now to be fair, this is mainly due to the fact that he snores very loudly and has too wear a massive CPAP machine at night which would keep mum awake, so he eventually just moved into the spare room. That part of it I get, but it's still not ideal.
And the worst part is, all that is just scratching the surface. My mum is constantly ranting and complaining to me about how much she has had enough and is fed up with him just doing nothing and not wanting to be a part of the family any more and just retreating into himself and I completely agree with her as well.
My mum and step dad have been together for 20 years this year, but I know for a fact that she does not love him anymore and wants to break up with him and end the relationship. Not only has she flat out told me this in private, but she wouldn't even have to tell me for me to know.
The biggest problem however and the primary reason why she won't separate from his is money. They have a mortgage for the house in both their names, many contracts are in both their names as well for things that we have done to the house like adding the solar panels, the battery backup for the solar panels, the renovations etc. A few joint accounts too.
Mum has told me so many times that if she were to win the lottery, she would leave him in a heartbeat. The money side of things and so many things being in both their names makes the situation so much harder. Mum has also said that she could not afford to live in our house if they split up as just a one person salary would not cover everything. I currently do not have a job and am actively;y looking for a new one after leaving a toxic work environment recently, but I do my part by paying for the houses monthly internet bill which lowers the cost of my board and my brother and sister in law also chip in in their way, but I still don't know if that would be enough.
Now of course, I love my step dad. I really do. He has been my main father figure in my life for the past 20 years since my mum divorced my real dad in 1999 when I was 2 years old. I still see my real dad on a regular basis and we have a good relationship, but I obviously have not lived with him 24/7 like I have with my step dad for 20 years. It's just that unfortunately, he is just not working in our family anymore and something has to change.
I guess what I am asking for is some advice and some help. Is there a way that we can move on from him? Is there a way where we can get him out of our lives without our lives being shaken up in the process. We have lived in this house for 18 years and it is our home. The thought of moving somewhere else just because we wouldn't be able to afford it anymore is heartbreaking to me. I know I may eventually move out one day if I get a girlfriend or whatever, but more heartbreaking for my mum than anything else.
So my question to you all is, has anyone out there reading this experienced the same sort of thing I have just described to you and if so, how did you manage to get out of it (if you did) and get your family back again? Any sort of advice or information or whatever else you can give me would be so much appreciated.

Hello all.
As a lover of all animals including non-human primates, I feel that it is my duty to continue to bring awareness to the devastating consequences of private monkey ownership. In particular, I have been focusing on one individual who has made his financial profit off of what I feel is his continued exploitation of his capuchin monkeys.
Despite this owner's persistent belief that I have some "hidden agendas" against him in particular, the reason why I have fixated on him is simple (and I have made that clear repeatedly in the past). Out of all the primate pet vloggers on YouTube and social media, this owner's capuchin monkeys especially Monkey Boo appear to exhibit the most troubling displays of behavior and appearance. I have not witnessed any other capuchin monkey vloggers whose monkeys exhibited these same abnormal behavioral patterns. In fact, I have previously stated that I used to be a huge fan of this owner's YouTube channel, and donated money and gifts to his monkeys years ago in support. Thus, my only 'agenda' is my genuine concern for a capuchin monkey I had grown to become very fond of, and my desire to get Monkey Boo the help he truly needs despite his owner continuing to cover up his true condition.
His YouTube channel has the most subscribers out of all capuchin monkey vloggers, and he and his capuchin monkeys have been the focus of several somewhat flattering articles on media outlets such as Vice. And despite this owner's awareness of this subreddit and my posts, he stubbornly continues to gaslight, lie, and deny that any of his monkeys, especially his most popular monkey, Boo, are sick in any way shape or form. He is quick to antagonize and block anyone on his social media channels that questions the appearance and behavior of Monkey Boo, despite many of these concerned viewers being long time dedicated fans of Boo and only having genuine concerns for Boo's well being.
And despite Monkey Boo first showing signs of mental/emotional distress and disorders back in 2022, this owner has continued to gaslight, lie, and cover up the true status of Boo. Instead of addressing viewer concerns, being transparent, and getting professional help for Boo, this owner has engaged in and continues to engage in covering up Boo's true condition. Going on two years now, this owner posts old video clips of Monkey Boo in happier and healthier days on a daily basis to his YouTube channel (to cover that he can no longer film Boo like before).
The following are some media evidence to back up myself and others claims that Monkey Boo is not in a good state of mind these days. These media clips clearly show Monkey Boo exhibiting classic signs of non-human primate stereotypy behavior, repetitive type behaviors that indicate mental/emotional illness and distress.

The most disturbing visual cue about the unhealthy mental state of Monkey Boo was brought to my attention by fellow subreddit poster FAH-Q-All (a great and wonderful resource and individual with nothing but the most genuine of concerns for Monkey Boo). Alopecia, or hair loss, is a very noticeable symptom of mental/emotional stress, distress, and illness, typically trigged by stress. FAH-Q-All mentioned that the condition and appearance of a monkey's tail can be indicative of an unhealthy mental/emotional state. And sure enough, when I compared old photos of Monkey Boo to Boo in 2024, the patchy condition of his tail is clearly evident.

And the patchy hair loss is not isolated to Monkey Boo's tail. Boo's hair loss is also quite noticeable on his scalp. Notice how exceedingly thin Boo's scalp looks in the top row pictures from 2024 (as well as his glazed/dead eyes look). By comparison, notice how full Boo's scalp was full and vibrant four years ago on bottom row pictures (I deliberately put both a dry and wet scalp pictures so that no one can claim that the thinning appearance in the above pictures was due to being wet):

Monkey Boo in happier days four years ago. On a side note, thanks to this subreddit this owner no longer feeds his capuchin monkeys bananas. Bananas, despite its popular stereotype as being an 'ideal' food for non-human primates, is actually terrible for them.
Monkey Boo in 2024, can apparently no longer be filmed outside of his cage due to his unpredictable behavior. A huge difference compared to younger Monkey Boo.
As a side comparison, this picture shows what two relatively healthy capuchin monkeys should look like. Note the vibrant, full hair growth and general calm appearance. The white capuchin monkey on the right was actually 30 years of age at that time (2014) and was rescued from a life of research at a major university. It is not a good look when a 30-year old capuchin monkey looks far healthier than a 14-year old capuchin monkey. Despite Monkey Boo's owner and his fan base trying to infer that Boo is 'slowing down,' a captive capuchin monkey that is slowing down at only 14 years of age is indicative of terrible living conditions.

In closing, I want to once again reiterate that the only 'agenda' I have with this and past posts in regards to this particular monkey and owner is because of my genuine concern for Monkey Boo's overall health. I have no affiliations with any other primate owner or vlogger, nor am I an official member of any animal rights groups. I used to be a huge fan of monkey vloggers like the owner of Monkey Boo. I was captivated by Boo's human like antics and felt it was all in adorable good fun.
However, once Monkey Boo started showing signs of mental/physical/emotional distress, and his owner stopped regular updates on Boo's YouTube channel, I started to become concerned. I found other individuals had also been raising concerns two years ago (and they continue to raise concerns to this day). I also noticed that Boo's owner denied anything was wrong with his monkey and bullied and blocked anyone from Boo's social media pages that raised genuine concerns for Boo's welfare. It was this inexplicable and detestable behavior by Monkey Boo's owner that completely changed my opinions of him, and spurred my own research into capuchin monkeys. I educated myself about these magnificent wild animals, the smartest of the New World Monkeys, and had my eyes opened to the devastation of wild monkeys being kept as private pets.
If Monkey Boo's owner had been transparent from the start and acknowledged his fan's concerns for Boo's welfare, and graciously accepted these concerns and advice and sought professional help for Boo, I would never have thought to contribute to this subreddit. There is absolutely no question in my mind that had Monkey Boo's owner done this, Boo's fan base would have completely understood and embraced both Boo and owner. Boo's fan base would have gladly donated money and resources to get Boo the help he needed, and would have offered unconditional support regardless of what happened.
Instead, Monkey Boo's owner decides to take the cowardly route, and to this day continues to engage in deceitful behavior to the detriment of Monkey Boo. This owner's other monkeys also appear to be in sub-par condition, particularly Monkey Meela who looks very obese. Again, no other capuchin monkey on YouTube/social media shows the extreme level of physical/mental/emotional abnormality as Monkey Boo does, thus my continued highlighting of this particular capuchin monkey and his owner.
Capuchin monkeys in the wild can walk on average up to two miles daily foraging, patroling, protecting, mating, etc. These pet capuchin monkeys by comparison are stuck in their cages for many hours a day and night, feed species-inappropriate foods and in excessive portions, and are denied the companionship of their collective troops necessary for their mental/physical/emtional well being. All for financial gain on YouTube and social media with no true regard of the well being of their animals.

I was watching a video this morning from a YouTube channel called EconClips. It was about price systems : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xem0BPe3MNU&t=334s
I won't explain it here as this would make things quite long. The point made, as you can expect, is that regulations are bad, free market is good and non-intervention is great. They specifically explained this point using an analogy with innovative vs less innovative farmers.
The implicit assumption in this video is that consumers always act in their best self interest, and in so doing encourage producers from producing more or better, thus lowering prices and/or increasing quality.
The reasoning is of course sound if the axiom "consumers always act in their best self interest" is true. Everybody wants increasing quality, lower prices, more innovative techniques, etc.
But as much as I like austrian economics, ie sound money, free enterprise, etc... I am a bit skeptical of this idea that consumers always act in their best self interest.
Let's take a similar example to the video with farmers.
A group of farmers decide to use chemicals that are very efficient and greatly increase their yield. They can thus lower their prices and flood the market with their cheap cereals. Now the issue is that those chemicals are extremely harmful to humans, but the effects when ingested in small quantities only appears over a long time. The timeframe is still just enough that this is remains a health hazard, meaning you get sick before reaching your average lifespan.
I am doubtful whether consumers, even if made aware (perfect information) of the nature of the products, would prefer buying the more expensive cereals. After all, there is a market for cigarettes and drugs.
What then is the government to do? Spread more awareness through media and propaganda? Directly step in?
I know that those who are libertarians on top of being austrians will tell me that after all, the state has no business telling people what to do with their lives. If they want to poison themselves with cheap cereals, that's their informed decision.
It is also a philosophical dilemma: what is, what determines a consumer's best interest? I do not believe the consumer himself is 100% of the time equipped with the tools to carefully ponder his options nor is he always conscious of his own self interest.
Are experts better suited then? That's pretty much what we have in our societies right now, ie bureaucratic regulations. But bureaucrats can be lobbied and although their job is supposedly to care for the collective, they are corruptible human beings and their interests do not necessarily align with consumers.

Introduction

Hello fellow Helldivers. My name is Elliot, alias TeGoRE, a player with 155 hours on the game and plenty of experience gathered from 3rd party sources, especially Reddit and YouTube. I primarily play on difficulty 7, so this post will be biased specifically towards that difficulty.
As you all may know by this point, a lot of people are upset with the Automaton faction, its issues, balancing, bugs, etc. In this post I will be attempting to bring awareness to specific issues rather than asking for vague and general "fixes" the faction would need. I will also be referencing the other faction currently present in the game, the Terminids, as a point of comparison throughout the post.

"Fun factor" analysis; Loadout restrictions

I'll begin with what I believe will be the major point of discussion here. The automatons are just not fun. I understand this is a critical take, but please read before jumping straight to comments.
Let's compare the "fun" factor of Terminids to Automatons here. The Terminids allow you to run pretty much any loadout, while still letting you have impact on the game. You can run pure fodder clear loadouts with light penetration primaries and support tools and contribute to the mission that way, allowing your teammates to clear the heavies with ease. You can also run pure heavy clear with big bulky primaries and anti-tank tools, still contributing to the mission by destroying any charger and bile titan that comes into sight hence allowing your teammates to shoot the other fodder present without being spat on by a 400 ton oversized shrimp or being charged at by a walking rock. With both loadout cases you can also bring stratagems or change out your primaries and other tools (secondary and grenade specifically) that will allow you to have at least some impact on the heavies or lights, respectfully.
The Automatons don't allow for such loadout variety, and considering all the nerf barrages we've been receiving it's obvious that loadout choices are quite restrictive when it comes to fighting automatons. When was the last time you ran flamethrower against the Automatons? Any of the guard dogs? Any other sentry besides autocannon, EMS mortar or maybe the rocket sentry? Gas or airburst strikes? Light penetration or non-precision primaries? You get my point.
The faction requires a playstyle too specific for the casual player. You need to equip high precision weaponry (AMR, Counter sniper, Dominator, etc.) or medium penetration weaponry (Liberator penetrator, Counter sniper, Autocannon, etc) alongside way too many anti-tank tools. Sure, you can bring fodder clear, but the only realistic fodder is the regular troopers or the strider unit. Maybe berserkers. Only reliable (not saying it's the only viable one might I add) fodder clearer would be the grenade launcher, maybe the arc thrower. Furthermore, once on the actual battlefield, you can't necessarily play aggressive. Jump into a pile of bots and you'll be jumping back out limb-by-limb. You have to stay in cover, picking enemies one by one, slowly advancing forward. Then get all your progress denied by a bot drop :^)
We can then conclude that one of the contributing factors to why the Automatons aren't fun is the fact that it's too restricting and too sluggish. Let's look deeper, and analyse why your loadout and playstyle get so restricted;

Enemy analysis, its' contribution to the fun factor

The enemy types of the faction just do not let you vary your loadout enough.
Devastators specifically are the biggest issue. The regular devastator is well-thought out, a heavier bulkier unit with obvious weakspots and not too much firepower which could be compared to the hive guard in terms of mechanics. However, for the heavy devastator and rocket devastator, these are built to just bullshit you into dying. And good luck killing them if you have a light-pen weapon or generally don't have a longer-ranged or high-precision tool, as their primary body (excluding the abdomen) has enough HP to take three full counter sniper magazines (I do not know how a rocket devastator managed to do that, but it did) and just shrug it off. I don't think I need to talk about heavy devastators, they've been brought up enough... I will just briefly skim over it. They're too accurate. "Suppressive fire" does nothing to them. Their 70%-body-covering shield can eat anti-tank projectiles no problem. Sometimes a pack of devastators can be more devastating (badumtss) than a pack of hulks, depending on what devastators they are. If the "heavy" unit of a faction gets outperformed by common enemies, it's an obvious issue.
Another obnoxious enemy type is the berserker. As the name implies, they're a rage-crazed bot with only one directive: charge at you and kill you, no regard for its personal being. Which would be fine if they didn't have the health pool of a damn tank. One unit alone can eat an anti-tank projectile. And they typically spawns in packs of 4. Their weakspots don't even count as weakspots from what I can personally tell, shooting them in the head or the abdomen does about the same damage as just plain out shooting them. They're hard to kill at their core, and if they're backed up by support fire from the other enemy types behind them, you're pretty much helpless.
The rest of the enemy units are fine, in my opinion. They're well thought-out, with obvious counter-measure mechanics.
Hulks can be compared to Chargers. Heavy, tanky units at first, but mechanic rich enough to be an easy take-down once you figure out what you're doing. They have a giant heatsink which is where you have to shoot at regularly to take them out reliably. Not a weakspot might I add, just a point which you can shoot. Think Charger's butt. If you're a space cowboy shooting their tiny faceplate with anti-tank, or even medium penetration tools, can kill them as well. Lastly, just pumping them full of anti-tank projectiles (typically 2 rockets from any of the support weapons) will take them out just fine. There's other cool tricks you could pull off, such as throwing impact grenades between their feet, making them land behind the hulk, which would then take it out in 2 impact grenades if done right. Thermite grenades also deal a lot of damage to their legs, which can take them out too. Lastly, their arms can just be plain out shot off with the right tools. In conclusion, they are threatening at first, but once you use your brain to figure out its weakness, you're going to shrug them off.
Factory Striders are the Bile Titans of the Automatons. They are a bit less obvious but can still be handled decently well by a complete newbie. 2 miniguns on the front, shoot them off with medium penetration for easier kiting. Rocket the top cannon off for further success. Their big exposed abdomen is the obvious weakspot anyone can figure out. Shoot it enough and it'll die. For the more experienced, the front panel eye alongside the opening vents can also be points of advantage. Oh also can we talk about how they're a giant walking factory? Just bomb that bitch! 500kg, orbital precision strike, a regular airstrike, etc. It's a giant target just BEGGING you to throw stratagems at it.
Striders are simple as well. Big impenetrable front plate, completely exposed sides and back. A baby could do it!
Troopers are just fodder. Shoot 'em, they fall over.

Issue with dropships

If you played at least a few hours on the automaton front, you may know that the dropships can be shot down. However, when was the last time you saw that actually do anything?
The explosion deals too little damage, only sometimes killing the trooper units it's carrying. The body of the dropship itself seems to do no impact damage on the automatons, but loves to damage the shit out of you. The automatons also don't seem to care when they fall down 50 feet. Especially dropships with tanks. Shoot them down at the highest point of their drop, tank flies down at crazy velocity, lands with literally 0 damage to itself, then the dropships smacks on top of the tank doing fuck-all to it.
Oh and you can't forget the fact that the debris is solid cover FOR THE BOTS. You can't shoot through it. They can. They can also walk through it, you can't. ??????????

Issues with Automaton-specific side objectives

I will only bring up the ones that have actual issues behind them. If it isn't brought up here, then I personally believe it is fine.
Barely does it's job. Shoots down one dropship per reinforcement, and as we learned earlier shooting the dropships down doesn't even do anything to begin with. Often times the rockets hit terrain as well. Completely pointless side-objective.
Add some sort of indication to the spectating players when the person they're spectating is inside a jammer field, and therefore cannot reinforce them. Too many posts about too many people getting kicked for not reinforcing when they literally cannot.

Bugs (not the Terminid kind)

The faction is riddled with way too many bugs, which just suck the fun out of it. Bots shooting through obviously solid cover, bots seeing you from across the map / through cover and then calling reinforcements, their seemingly 50/50 resistance to explosive damage, then other misc bugs not worth addressing.
This obviously drives people away. A terminid can't shoot me through a rock, I'd prefer fighting that terminid.

Conclusion of analysis; Solutions, final thoughts

The Automaton faction enemies & its mechanics at its core are fine, most enemies making complete sense. Most mechanics, while rich in function, are not very obvious. To play the faction well you need to invest some time into learning how it works. This deters the casual player back to the terminid front, which is a bit more brainless, requiring you just "hurr durr shoot bugs". Here's some solutions to consider:
Rework the devastator enemy type, specifically its specialists types:
The spawn rates of the specialist types could be reworked instead, allowing space for the default devastator instead rather than constantly spewing the specialist types. When was the last time you saw a dropship bring just normal devastators?
Please please please do something about berserkers. Lower their health pool. Maybe make the weakspots actually do something. Perhaps make them spawn less frequently if they're in the major enemy pool. Or, instead of that, make the packs smaller. They're a major ammo sink currently and by the time you're done killing them all the other enemies are already in your face.
Dropship crashes should actually do something. If I use up my support weapon's ammo to shoot down a dropship, I would want it to actually contribute to me destroying the bots, not just create a flashy explosion and extra 1-way cover for the bots.
SEAF SAM Site needs a rework of sorts. Make it always spawn on higher terrain, maybe buff its firerate (see actual SAM sites for reference), or keep the firerate as is if dropship crashes actually start doing something, instead improving its turn speed and lock-on speed. Primary issue is terrain though.
"oh yeah this spot is PERFECT for a SAM site!" said the seaf engineer after ordering it be built in a trench enclosed by cliffs from all 4 sides "what the hell is this" said the helldiver when stumbling upon it
Realistically speaking, the only people who perform well when fighting against Automatons are those who have tens of hours of experience on their belt alongside a team with similar skill level, using proper "meta" (god forbid) loadouts to properly counter the bot menace. The casual solo-queue player just crumbles.

Conclusion & Goodbyes

I may have missed some things, but I tried to grab everything problematic about the faction to the best of my ability. I will most likely not edit the post due to it already being gigantic. However any comments adding onto the post are obviously appreciated. :)

Kadillac Kirk had been a good friend of mine for several years. I had met him through friends from The Spring Stage; and he never had anything to do with The Imp, which is why he didn’t appear in the Married Mary saga. Mary would have totally thrown herself at him, and Kirk would have definitely “thrown it in her.” He loved the ladies and often remarked that there was no such thing as an unappealing woman, nor was there anything sweeter than finding the pearl of passion in an outwardly plain dame. Fortunately for Kirk, he never met Mary. This was probably fortunate for Mary as well, seeing as Kirk was a confirmed bachelor and his rakish nature might have broken her fat heart.
Kirk was an older guy. Not MOE old, though. He was in his early forties, but he easily passed for a carefree dude in his 30s... not that he lied about his age. I only mention this trait to juxtapose Kirk’s genuine youthful air with Moe’s unconvincing youthful farce. Kirk dressed normally, avoided stupid jargon, and never busted out gimmicks like tarot cards or spells. He just existed, behaved affably, and people liked him for it.
He drove a classic 1962 Cadillac El Dorado convertible with red leather interior, and he lived in a charmingly quaint (and ridiculously expensive) neighborhood. How he made his fortune remained a mystery, but he never bloviated about his wealth. He just threw spectacular parties and people showed up. And, to my knowledge, he never tried to lure women into bed with his money (although I’m sure he got his fair share of boom-boom thanks to his digs and his wheels, even if the gold-diggers denied their monetary agendas).
Kirk was legitimately handsome. He was a drummer, he had a full head of black hair, he was clean-shaven, he worked out, and he knew all the hidden gems in Wellsprings. So why hadn’t I tried... or even desired to date him? I don’t know. I just didn’t feel drawn to him like that. He felt like a cool uncle and he had, thus far, never done anything to change my perception. Plus, the age difference weirded me out a little. Kirk didn’t look forty; but knowing that he had so much more life experience than I did created a power imbalance that would have creeped me out if we’d been dating. As buddies, I just felt supremely cool riding in his Cadillac, smoking Fantasia cigarettes, and hitting the speakeasies and jazz clubs I would have never known about if it weren’t for Kirk’s connections.
And he had been a good person to talk to about my romantic woes. He never lecherously suggested that I should date him, and he gave the type of tempered advice that only comes with lived experience. But he often lightly mocked me for my crush on Dennis and he did a hilarious impression of Smegal popping too soon over his “precious.” So when Mary “got me back” by doing whatever she did with to Dennis, I called Kadillac Kirk and told him the drinks were on me if he’d be my designated driver for the night.
Why hadn’t I called Whisky??? Well, A) Kirk was way more fun to hang out with, at least from my past experiences up to that point. And B) I needed to bitch about a boy, something I couldn’t do in good conscience in front of a guy I was dating. So I put on the sexiest plunging halter dress I owned, applied heavy eye makeup and spikey accessories, braved a pair of stilettos, and sashayed out to Kirk’s convertible. I felt like a badass rock star. I probably looked like a try-hard hooker.
Kirk: Daaaaay-um! Somebody really did do a number on you, huh? I know you said you were upset, but the gents are gonna be writing thank you notes to that fat girl and that butt-fucking hobbit.
Me: I just need to feel pretty and numb. And I trust you to keep me from making a fool of myself.
Kirk squeezed my shoulder. “I’ve got you. You do whatever you need to do to get rid of these demons.”
He sparked up a J and offered me the first puff. I gladly accepted. He took one puff of his own, but said that the rest was mine since he didn’t want to drive stoned. See? He was responsible! Weed wasn’t legal in California yet, so I got a little bit baked before I stashed the sativa in the glove box and wrapped a scarf around my hair like a starlet from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Kirk sped out of the parking lot and said he was taking me to a downtown hotel that was hosting a party that night in their lush lobby.
Kadillac Kirk pulled up to the main entrance, paid the valet, and then opened my door. I was wobbly from the weed. And I had stupidly decided to wear heels. You can get high or you can wear high (heels). You can’t have both. Not if you’ve repeatedly injured both ankles (as I have). I had to take Kirk’s arm to keep from keeling over. “Can people tell I’m stoned?” I whispered. Kirk replied, “Nobody’s paying any attention to anyone else’s intoxication. I promise you that much.” I nodded, steadied myself, and strutted alongside my very cool friend, feeling a little more confident.
A live jazz orchestra was playing Cole Porter as we entered the lobby. Everything sparkled. The music was even more intoxicating than the spliff had been. “Just One of Those Things” brought tears to my eyes since the lyrics hit every raw nerve regarding the Dennis debacle. But I smiled. It might sound mental, but being distraught over a trash fire of a one-sided romance was exhilarating. Immature, for sure. But also exhilarating. You see, that kind of sadness doesn’t hurt. Not really. It stings. It leaves little bruises, but it’s very safe to wallow in because you haven’t actually lost anything. Melancholia over that which you never had is as sweet as it is bitter; and that type of twisted splendor is rivaled only by Stendhal.
“Here's hoping we meet now and then. It was great fun, but it was just one of those things.” I sang along with the band, and a fat tear rolled down past my melancholic smile and onto my chin. Kirk brushed it aside. “Too close to home?” I wiped away the remnants of the tear’s journey from eye to chin and smiled a more genuine smile. “The perfect distance from home. Shall we get drinks? Remember, I’m buying.”
Kirk: No, no. This is your time to heal. And I’m here as your pal, not your chauffeur. What would the lady like?”
I pretended to barf. Kirk knew I hated it when he got overly formal and overly attentive. So he did it just to mess with me. “Shot of vodka,” I replied.
Kirk: How many?
I thought briefly. “FIVE.”
Kirk: Five to one, baby. One in five...
Me: No one here gets out alive.
Kirk: Are you able to hold yourself upright, or should you come with?
I took a seat on an ornate, damask-upholstered chaise lounge. “I’ll be okay. And I was kidding about the five shots.”
I sat there lost in the music for a while. I thought very little about Dennis. Even less about Mary. And not at all about Whisky (whom I had shagged less than a week ago). My mind danced through the ornate lighting in the hotel lobby, and I suddenly felt the need to join the hoity-toity guests on the dancefloor!
Kirk returned with four shots of vodka. Two for him, two for me. That was quite reasonable of him. He knew damn well that I couldn’t handle five shots, but he also knew that I was in a... state. One that called for more than a single shot. I raised a both miniature glasses to “No more ninnyhammers or hairy-footed lovers.” Kirk did his hilarious Smegal impression, we double-toasted, and downed the shots. The band launched into “Let’s Misbehave,” and I kicked off my stilettos and made a beeline for the dance floor.
“There’s something wild about you child that’s so contagious. Let’s be outrageous! Let’s misbehave.” Kadillac Kirk swept me up, twirled me around, and dipped me as we both sang along with the lyrics. I wasn’t swooning for him, but I was enthralled by the moment. The music, the dancing, the combination of booze and bud... so I kissed him as he pulled me back to my feet. And he kissed back. In a way that Dennis never had. In a way that Whisky’s beard wouldn’t permit. I didn’t feel the visceral sensations that I’d felt when Dennis had kissed me, but it felt nice to feel desired. And then I noticed that other guests were watching us and applauding. Now, that was a dopamine rush if ever there was one!
I gently broke away from the embrace, high-fived Kirk and returned to the chaise lounge to put my stupid shoes back on. He followed me and smashed his face back onto mine. I pulled away and laughed. “It was a moment,” I told him. “I appreciate the dance, and that kiss was the perfect finale. But it’s not happening again.”
Kirk: Not to worry, Valerie. I know you. I knew all along that we were performing, and I was more than happy to be your scene partner.
Me: And dance partner! Those were some excellent moves! I didn’t know you had ballroom training.
Kirk: You name it, I’ve mastered it. Another drink for the lady?
I pretended to barf again. “Not yet. I’m not sad right now. Do you mind if I just sit here and enjoy the music?”
Kirk: Ah. My kisses do have healing properties...
I flipped my hand up at him. “Knock that shit off, bro. I wanted to hang out with you because I trust you not to get weird. Even if I get weird, I know you have the maturity to balance me out.”
Kirk: Are you calling me old???
Me: No. I’m calling you rational, responsible, and respectful.
Kirk: Well, now. If you can articulate an alliterative statement that fluently, then you clearly aren’t drunk enough!
I dismissed this comment as a joke. And he did indeed knock off the flirtation. We had a perfectly pleasant time chatting and dancing (no more kissing, though). And then I noticed a girl I knew from Into the Woods entering the lobby. She’d played Florinda and I’d played Little Red. I called her name and waved enthusiastically. She waved back. And then her date entered. It was D.E.N.N.I.S. I sank into the chaise. Kirk caught on immediately. “The hobbit???” he asked. I nodded silently. “You wanna make out again?” he enthused. I shook my head. I had to go say hello to Flo. And I had an idea...
I crossed the lobby, smiled, squealed, and hugged her.
Florinda: Lil’ Red! It’s been forever! So glad to see you!!! This is my friend, Denny.
From the corner of my eye. I could see Dennis shifting uncomfortably. I refused to look directly at him, neglected to acknowledge Flo's introduction and continued to converse only with her. "So glad to see you, too! What have you been up to since we left the woods?"
Dennis: C’mon, Val...
Florinda (appearing oblivious to the iciness between me and Dennis): Oh, I had some drama after the show closed. I'll have to tell you about it some other time... Have you seen Prince Big Bad (Scumbanger) lately?
I laughed. “Last time I saw him, he was hitting on some nasty fat chick at The Imp.”
Flo and I both scoffed at the pervy pest. Into the Woods was where I’d initially met Scumbanger. He played The Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince. Again... typecasting. There’s a whole essay in my brain about my first encounter with the pest, during which he quoted the song that he sang to me in the show, “Hello, Little Girl.” But it gets into some pretty uncomfortable territory because he made me feel... excited. Well, excited and scared. Nothing of note happened during Into the Woods, but our odd interactions did kind of set the stage for some extremely regrettable events during that Cats cast party.
I excused myself, saying that I needed to get back to my friend. And then I leaned in and said in a hushed voice to Flo, “Watch your ass with that one. If he’s the Denny I’m thinking of...” I gave her a look that only another female would be able to read. Her eyebrows shot up and she nodded. Dennis continued to shift as though he were trying to hold in a massive dump. “BABE! Uh...”
Flo apparently answered to that moniker as well. “What is it, Denny? Don’t worry. That was just telepathic girl talk. You apparently have a reputation...”
Dennis: Different Denny. I assure you I’m a pious gentleman.
Me: Ah. My mistake. Well, then. You guys have a good time! They’re playing Cole Porter, and the band is delovely. Great to see you, Flo!
I hugged Flo again, gave Dennis a curt nod, ignored the scent of mandarins and mountain air, and returned to Kirk.
I collapsed on the chaise lounge, exhausted from holding back the rage. I had no right to be mad at Florinda. I hadn’t seen her in three years, so how was she supposed to know that I’d had a thing with Dennis? Hell, I couldn’t even be mad at Dennis because the last time he and I had spoken in any meaningful way, I’d told him that I was no longer entertaining my crush on him. So why was I surprised to see him dating??? And why had he never taken ME out on a date like this??? And why wasn’t I smitten with Kadillac Kirk who HAD taken me out on a date like this, was an objectively excellent kisser, and a bona fide BALLER? What was wrong with me???
Kirk suggested going down the street to a quaint little bar and then sobering up at a diner closer to my apartment. I numbly nodded and followed him in silence for a few blocks. He assured me that I had “turned several heads” on the way to the new location, but I neither cared nor believed him. This wasn't the type of numbness I'd been aiming for. Now I needed to get schnockered. “Five shots of vodka, please.” Yes, I was serious.
Kadillac Kirk, my reliable designated driver, ordered only a beer and watched in something across between astonishment, concern, and delight as I slammed all five shots in rapid succession. I half expected to immediately retch all over the bar. But I felt fine. I half expected to immediately lose consciousness and wake up in the hospital. But I remained coherent. How I’d managed to take in that much hard liquor and suffer no direct consequences, I’ll never know.
I think I wanted to suffer. I wanted to either feel nothing at all or to feel a sickness bad enough to distract me from the scorching sting that pulsed through my being when I realized that I had lost the abstract notion I’d been addicted to this entire time. Hope. It wasn’t Dennis himself I couldn’t quit. It was that drug called hope. The hope that maybe, just maybe Dennis would give our romance a fair chance. The hope that maybe, just maybe he would make peace with himself, get his mind out of his crotch, and enjoy some agenda-free togetherness. The hope that maybe, just maybe he would stop bloviating about his admittedly impressive accomplishments for five fucking minutes and ask about my life. I had my own reasonably impressive accomplishments, even if they paled in comparison to his. A proper suitor would have enjoyed hearing about them.
But seeing him out with another woman, a woman who had no reason to parade her Dennis escapades before me as some means of revenge, a woman he was clearly courting of his own volition... My hope had died. It died before I’d had time to wean myself off it. Now I had to mourn the loss of hope, which is a very tricky brand of grief to navigate. Vodka wasn’t the answer, but it was what I had to work with. So it would have to do.
After enough time had passed without vomiting or collapsing, I asked Kirk to bring his car around to the bar so that I didn’t have to walk two and a half blocks drunk and in heels. He nodded and dramatically leaned in for a kiss. I recoiled. “DUDE! I told you. The moment has passed.”
Kirk: I beg your pardon. I misread your eyes. Thought I saw a green light...
Me: It’s fine. I just want to go home while I’m still feeling okay.
Kirk: Of course. Your chariot will be here soon.
He skipped off to fetch his Cadillac and I noticed that the lights in the bar were beginning to dance a bit. This should have been concerning. But then I realized that I was giggling. Wait... What? Oh shit. Sure, I was drunk from those shots. But what I was feeling in that moment wasn’t drunkery. It was stonery. Kirk probably misread my face because my pupils were dilated. Not from desire, but from drug use.
Some of you might be thinking that I was a bad friend for not introducing Lucy, an old dude connoisseur, to Kirk. Well... I did. Several years before the events of this story. He adored her. She, on the other hand, thought he was immature. And she wasn’t wrong. Lucy was astute when it came to sussing out a person’s true nature. Far more astute than I. Her initial assessment that Kirk was immature is about to be vindicated. Stretch those cringe muscles! It’s almost time for pie...
I somehow managed to get to his car. I honestly don’t recall how I got there. Did one of the bartenders carry me? Did some kind patron allow me to lean on him? Had Kadillac Kirk carried me out? I’m not sure. But my memory ceases to be fuzzy about halfway to the 24-hour diner. It might have been the very same 24-hour diner where Mary pulled her... shenanigans. I’ll never know.
Kirk: Would you say that you’re more drunk or more stoned?
Me: STONED. Definitely stoned.
Kirk made some sort of grunty noise and reached for my thigh. I slapped his hand.
Kirk: Stoned but not amorous? That’s rare.
I started laughing rather unkindly. “You’re a fucking horndog! I thought you were my safe straight male friend, dammit.”
Kirk: I solemnly swear that your safety is my primary concern, my stoned beauty.
I pretended to throw up.
Kirk: So... You’re not horny. But are you hungry? The diner I’m heading to makes this Maple Walnut Pie with the most sumptuous... sensual cream and exquisite drizzling of...
Me: Ew! Stop trying to bang the pie. Bro. Are YOU stoned? (Then I remembered the question.) Yes, I’m hungry. But I don’t like nuts. I’ll have banana cream.
Kirk made that repulsive grunty noise again. “Uhhhhh... Mmmmmm. Cream. Yessssss. Yes, we’ll be there in just a minute.” He was squirming in the driver's seat.
Me: GROSS, DUDE! If you’re gonna be like that I’ll just order HASH brows. Get it? Hash??? (I giggled.) You can’t make that sound nasty.
Kirk: Forgive my jokes. I think my blood sugar’s a bit low.
As Kirk parked, I began to wonder how I might get away with walking shoeless into the diner. The stilettos had to get off my feet. At least while I was walking. And Kirk was kind enough to give me his socks and wear his loafers “island style” into the establishment. Okay, that was gallant of him. Maybe he was going to behave himself for the rest of the evening.
I wasn’t terribly talkative as we sat down, and he expressed a bit of concern for my emotional well-being. I wasn’t coherent enough to explain what was happening to my emotions and I wasn’t sure I trusted him with my deep, dark secrets at that point. So I shrugged like a sulky teenager, ran my hands over my messy, windblown hair, and mumbled that I was “just hungry.” And right on cue, a very kind, slightly older waitress with a sweet southern accent stopped by to take our order.
Kirk: Ah, yes. We’ll have two cups of black coffee. And we’ll share a slice of that delectable Maple Walnut Pie.
Waitress: Oh, honey. That pie is scrumptious! I take it you’ve been here before?
Kirk: I have. This will be her first time to taste the splendor.
I hated to be a killjoy, but I interrupted and said to the waitress, “Ma’am? I’m sure the Maple Walnut is excellent, but could I please get a slice of Banana Cream? And a big glass of ice water?
Waitress: Sure, hon! Banana Cream’s just as yummy! I’ll be right back with those coffees and that big water.
Kirk was sucking on the tip of his forefinger and shaking his head a bit. “You’re passing up so many sensational... sensual...”
I put my forehead on the table and growled. “You swore you’d stop being nasty!” I held this #headdesk pose for quite some time before I finally lifted my head... only to see that Kirk was still sucking his fingertip and staring at me like a wild animal. “Pleeeeeease be normal,” I whined. “It’s been a really weird night for me.”
Kirk: Indeed. Many surprises. You know... You’re like titanium. Your flame burns so fast and so bright, if a guy doesn’t get in there while the iron is hot, he’ll never get another chance. I was too slow.
What the...? I was pretty sure he was wrong about titanium burning quickly. I’m no chemistry wiz, but my dad and my oldest brother are both big-brains when it comes to physics and chemistry. So I picked up some things just listening to them talk. Accurate or inaccurate, Kirk was being creepy again. He’d never been creepy towards me before, although I’d seen him act like this with other women. Usually with staggering success. Why????? His money. It had to be his money. Kirk was a nice-looking man, but holy shit... No amount of good looks could save this creep show
And then, our sweet waitress sat down our coffees, my water, and the two slices of pie. After I gulped down a whole bunch of water, I grabbed a fork, prepared to quell my munchies... and then I froze. Kirk was quickly flicking his finger back and forth across the top of his pie. And moaning. He noticed my wide-eyed stare, smirked, sucked the tip of his thumb, picked up the plate with both hands, and began flicking his tongue across the tip of the triangular pie slice. And moaning some more. Well, there went my appetite.
Kirk took his middle finger and jabbed it into the crustless vertex of the pie slice, then he began pumping it in and out like a piston, and flicking his thumb across the increasingly demolished top layer of whipped cream. He gasped this time. People were starting to stare. His pointer finger joined his middle finger in the piston action, and he replaced his thumb with his tongue. Between flicks of the tongue, he groaned, “Oh yeah, baby... Let me taste you,” but it was kind of hard to understand him.
And I was either about to run to the back office, tell them that I was in danger and needed a police escort home... OR I was about to burst out laughing at the spectacle. Kirk continued... He removed his fingers and gregariously licked pie filling off of them. "Ohhhhh," he groaned, "I got you soooo sticky. So sweet. So moist." And then he started sucking his fingertips again, switching from middle to pointer, middle to pointer and emitting a delighted little, “Mmmmmm” with every suck.
Finally, he jabbed his fingers back into the utterly destroyed pie, lowered his face into the mess and lapped loudly and passionately, moaning, grunting, and mumbling “Come on, baby. Come on. Mmmmmm. Come on.” I could see the waitress and some dude in a suit heading over to the table, so I sank down in my seat, partially covered my face, but continued to watch the train wreck. At last, Kirk shuddered violently as he splatted his entire hand onto the plate and rubbed furiously. And then he locked eyes with me. He sucked the tip of his thumb one final time and said, “You...” There was a long pause during which Kirk lovingly stroked the mess he’d made. “You... are the pie.”
I don’t hang out with Kadillac Kirk anymore. But he’s still a bachelor, ladies!

Hi,
Recently my trusty cheap 12V drill broke after years of serving me well, I wanted to replace it with a Milwaukee hammedrill driver which I've seen come out on top of all the other brands in many of the reviews and comparisons on YouTube.
My question is, can an M12 or M18 hammer drill drill into concrete walls? My main issue with my old drill is that of course it could not drill into my walls, even with a tile drill bit it would get stuck right before the end and I had to bring out my heavy SDS hammer drill, I want my drill to be able to drill a hole or two once in a while, i'm not a professional and won't be putting my tools to work everyday.
I am also confused with the numbering and naming of the tools, is there a numbers series like 2804 and a letters series like FPD and FDD? Or is it just a regional thing?

Looking to get into waterpiping, naturally I was told that since we put no tobacco in the pipe it would be a healthier alternative.
Then I started doing my research as one should and found heaps of articles claiming that hookah smoke (as they refer to it) is several times more risky to smoke than regular cigatettes. They dont ever specify whether they used QL or Coconut to conduct these tests.
Then there are heaps of articles claimimg how much better coconut coal is but few of those discuss the impact on the smoker's health and none that I could find uses numbers or draws comparisons to regular cigarette smoke.
My question is, can anybody cite any research on the relative health risks of smoking hookah specifically using coconut coals? Does it actually make a difference in terms of health risks?

Sorry about any selling mistakes my glasses just broke and I don't have any replacements.
For some context I am 13 almost 14 and have been diagnosed as autistic, having very bad anxiety, and being depressed to the point of SH. I have 2 sisters but they aren't important to this. I live with my Grandparents as I was adopted by them when I was 3. I really just want to know if my fear is reasonable or not. First off my grandma has always let me watch things I shouldn't be, I got into Adventures with Purpose, it is a YouTube channel where they find cars underwater for missing/dead people. This scared me a bit as I live in Minnesota and around many bodies of water and it made me more aware of were I was in the car. If it was just that I would say I was unreasonable but there's more. My grandpa is the one that drives me places, I have noticed for the past 4 or so years that he drinks a lot of beer but never questioned it, an example is that I went out with a metal detector in our yard and found about 20 beer caps. Recently I have noticed how bad my grandpa is at driving. He is most of the time in the middle of the road or almost off the road and is always speeding. He also makes really sharp turns only a few feet away from hills. Recently I was in the car with him to go pick up my sister amd he noticed that my seat was to far up and told me to put it back. When I tried and couldn't he started to yell at me and cuss at me which made me cry and he reached across me all the way to the other side of the car with one hand on the steering wheel to but the seat back. In doing this he almost hit another car and almost go off the side of the road. He also gets upset in the car a lot and since I sit in the passenger seat he normally yells and cusses at me so I stay quiet most of the time but then he complains about me not talking to him. I have also noticed that he drinks when bringing me to school and picking me up and he sometimes spends up to 400$ on cigarettes so I have also noticed that I and everything in my house smells like cigarettes and alcohol. I am now scared to get in the car as it makes me feel trapped and like something bad is about to happen and it makes me extremely vigilant in the car. I haven't told anyone besides my imidiate family about the bare minimum of what happened but I am going to see my therapist next week, should I tell her or am I being unreasonable?

TL;DR at the bottom.
I worked at HD as a cashier many years ago, before SCO. I was also a cashier at 3 different convenience stores, so I have something to compare HD customers to.
Stealing - HD customers steal, but the part that breaks my mind is that they never present as poor people stealing as a hustle. These are guys in expensive suits, but they steal from HD, and they get mad when you won't help them do it.
Countless customers driving expensive cars, wearing expensive clothes and jewelry would try to give the wrong numbers on their cut carpet or chains. As an HD cashier, that's why you have a tape measure. When I would bring it out, customers would get mad or nervous.
One guy, the guy I remember in the flashy suit driving a new Jaguar begged me to not measure his carpet roll. When I did it anyway, he was mad at me and sulking for the rest of the transaction. Others would be like, "you don't need to do that, I said it's 6'." Well, goody for you. Idk what to say to you, but this is a part of my job and if you measured correctly you should have nothing to worry about.
Older Karen ladies love to just go off on HD cashiers in my experience -
I had just been told by management that my transactions were taking too long, and that I needed to be faster. Never mind that the customers kept holding up transactions and I couldn't help that. So I had a line in Garden, and I was trying to get through it. This lady starts yelling at me that I was "too rough" with her plants. I wasn't even touching her precious plants, just the top half inch of the plastic planters they were in. She wouldn't shut up, and she was so mean that I ended up having to go to the back of the store for a while.
Another time, I was working with a couple of other cashiers on either side of me that were the types of people who are perpetually cold. They cranked up those heaters and the store was busy. I ended up sweating, and I guess I ended up smelling like sweat. This Karen in my line just starts in on me about how I stink, and like the other one, she won't shut up. Just keeps going on about it and escalating. I don't even think she could actually smell anything. I think she just saw the sweat and reacted. For the life of me I don't know what she expected me to say.
There are 2 kinds of HD customers when it comes to the HD credit card. Those who didn't want it the last 3 times you asked and still don't want it now, and customers who have the card and "iT wOrKs, DaMmIt!" -
About half of HD customers are super mad that you have the audacity to do your job and keep asking about that card.
As angry as the people are that don't want a card, the people that have HD cards are really mad. They're absolutely sure that you are doing something wrong when the card won't run. Then I would have to call the number for the card and talk to them. Customers would naturally be angry that they're just having to stand there while I call customer service. Sometimes this resulted in me being told I have to cut the card with scissors. It feels wrong to do it, and the customer loses their mind.
How dare I check IDs, and run checks through the machine that verifies them -
I saw so many paper checks come through my register. I had to slide them into this little machine that scans them to see if they're good, I guess. "You don't have to do that. My account is good." Yeah, well, I do have to do this.
HD made us ask for ID every time someone used any kind of credit or debit card. The customers got as mad about this as cigarette customers do in convenience stores.
HD contractor customers aren't much better than the others -
Contractors constantly paid for things at the lumber register with stacks of hundreds. Of course, the hundreds have to go in the tube and get sent to the back of the store. This takes a quick minute. To the customers, you're "doing something else" while you do this and not serving them.
But also because of all the 100s, I kept running out of change over and over again in the same shift. This requires me to call my cashier supervisor for change. She was a terrible person to work with because she spent all her time walking around the store gossiping on the phone. She would take forever, and the pressure from customers was insane.
There were also a few contractors with extensive beautiful tattoo work. Whenever they would have to wait for something like my supervisor bringing change, they'd see me glance at their artwork and then go on about how they shouldn't be treated badly as an HD customer because of tattoos. Just no, dude. I'm bored, and I've got anxiety, and your tattoos are awesome. I just looked because there's nothing else to do while we're waiting like this.
HD customers get violent -
I've had a few people threaten to hurt me over the fact that there was a long line and only one register open. A couple of them leaned over my register counter and got in my face.
One drunk weird couple came in one night. They tried to buy something over by lumber. Their card declined. They slurred and blew their alcohol breath on me while they told me the card declining was clearly my fault.
Then they go to leave, but for some reason they wanna leave through the big lumber doors. I was told not to open those doors for anyone after a certain time of night unless they had a clear need, as in, no other way to get their stuff out the door. So I told them it was against policy. They got really mad, and the woman takes her shopping basket and slams it as hard as she can into the other baskets. She was wearing several rings on her fingers, and she smashed her fingers by pinching them between the rings and the basket handle. This lunatic comes over to show me the little knick she has on her hand that's smaller than a dime. Her husband screams at me to "look at what you did to her" and starts telling me what he's going to do to me. This was my fault for not opening the bay door, clearly. I had to get help getting them out of the store and made an incident report.
Overall, they were almost all humorless, angry, griping, violent, and/or dishonest. I remember one cheerful customer. That's it. Just one. I only worked there for 8 months.
All of you that are still working there, I salute you. Whether it's awful for you, but you're sticking it out, or if you really enjoy the job.
TL;DR:
Rich customers tried to steal by not measuring properly and got butthurt when I measured.
One Karen went off on me about handling her plants "roughly." Another Karen went off on me because I was sweating under the heaters.
Customers are too angry about being asked if they want a credit card. Customers with a cc constantly got mad when their card didn't work.
Customers with checks hated that I had to verify their checks. Customers with cc hated that I asked for ID.
Contractors got mad when they had to wait for me to be brought change or send 100s to the back. Some of them had a complex about their tattoos.
I was threatened with violence a few times because the lines were long. One drunk couple got mad because their cc declined, then demanded the big door be opened, and I said no. The woman smashed her own hand, and her husband blamed me, screaming and threatening violence.
Almost none of the customers were happy. I worked there 8 months.

Our IEMs
My fiance and I fell down the rabbit hole of IEMs, here is our collection! It's really nice that we have the same sound preferences, it makes going into speakers in the future much easier lol.
Disclaimers: Basshead degenerates (never listened to anything and thought it had too much bass), Spotify as source, this is more of a story of our journey rather than a guide - sound is very subjective you just have to try them for yourselves.
The below is listed in chronological order based on when we bought / tried them:
  1. KZ ZS10 Pro v2 (top row, 2) - first iem. Slightly V shaped sound. It was fun and had better clarity than the noise cancelling headphones we were using. In retrospect it wasn't even that good but was good enough to convince us to get more into this hobby. Conclusion: I went back to relisten to these and thought the vocals was a bit shouty and nothing excelled.
  2. Truthear Hexa (top row, 1) - neutral but lacks bass. There's a lot of praise on the Hexas so I wanted to see what the fuss was about. Plus I wanted to try a different sound signature. The clarity of these are definitely better than the KZs but really made us miss the punch in the bass. Conclusion: It has good clarity, but not exciting enough for us and our library.
  3. Kiwiears Melody (top row, 3) - fun planar sound. I wanted to try planar. I quite enjoyed the warm and bassy sound of these, but with planars it lacks the punch of dynamic drivers. This was my personal favorite out of the 3 at this stage, while my fiance perferred the KZs that had punchier bass. Conclusion: fun sound but lacks a bit of punch due to driver type.
  4. Blon x HBB Z300 (middle row, 1) - budget warm & bassy king. After showing random pictures of beautiful iems to my fiance (and making her guess the prices like a game show), the Z300 was blind purchased by her just because of the beautiful gold / rose gold aesthetics and price. Ironically it ended up being our favorite set so far. As soon as we listened to it we knew this is it, this is what we are looking for. It was a magical experience. This is also when we discovered that apparently we are bassheads. Yes it lacks some detail compared to the Hexas or Melodys, but we were fine with the tradeoff. Conclusion: the set that defined our sound target, best for budget warm and bassy.
  5. QKZ x HBB Hades (middle row, 2) - bass. After discovering we were bassheads I wanted to see what the extreme version of bassy has to offer. It's definitely bassy, but we feel like it lacks the warmth we loved in the Z300s. I tried to play with eq to make these sound warmer, but ended up just making these sound really tin canned with eq. It's still a fun iem I pick up from time to time, but our overall favorite is still the Z300s. I feel like a HBB fanboy now lol. Conclusion: lots of bass but lacks warmth.
At this point we went on a trip to Asia and found an iem shop that lets us audition iems in store.
  1. Kiwiears Cadenza (top row, 4) - the safe rec. Don't think these need much introduction. Tuning on the Cadenza is just the perfect all rounder. Very versatile and has punchy bass (though less than Z300s). I bought these just cause I wanted a cheap souvenir from Asia. Conclusion: my go to recommendation for someone who just entered the hobby and haven't found their sound signature, or not bass degenerates like us.
Auditioned but didn't buy, only listened to 5 to 10 mins for these so only had some quick thoughts:
  1. Campfire Audio Cascara - I thought these sounded really good. Bassy and fun. The shell size is so huge they don't fit my fiance's ears at all so no impressions from her. The combination of the fit issue and price (especially for just a single DD) deterred us from buying these.
  2. Hype 4 - I was really hoping to like these. The store didn't have the Ziigaat twins (Doscinco / Cincotres) I really wanted to try, but I always see hype 4 mentioned with them. I figured they would have similar sounds. That's why we were really disappointed when we tried these. They didn't sound bassy to us at all. It sounded very clean and not really warm. I was already on the verge of buying the Doscincos when we were back from vacation. Suddenly we were not sure about it anymore.
  3. Fiio FH7 - these were actually decent, second fav of the bunch we auditioned. It's also an open back design, which I didn't even know existed in iems. They did sound a tad more airy but I unless I AB them I couldn't really tell a difference in sound stage. In the end it didn't wow us enough to impulse buy on a tight vacation budget.
  4. Blessing 2 - as bassheads, these are just not for us.
  5. IE200 - as bassheads, these are just not for us.
Now back from our Asia trip.
  1. Ziigaat Doscinco (bottom row) - blew our minds. At this stage we feel like we had identied what our sound preferences are, and that we'll have to jump in price brackets to see significant improvements. We wanted a direct upgrade to the warm and bassy Z300s. I saw that the graph of the Doscinco was similar and was recommended as the sweet spot of this sound signature (thanks to Jay Audio on YouTube for his upgrade guide). After the disappointing Hype 4 audition I didn't think it could be possible to justify the price jump to what I consider Mid-Fi, and thought I would return the Doscincos after trying them. But after a few songs we were hooked. It was like listening to the Z300s for the first time again. So many of the songs come alive in comparison. In retrospect there were songs that the sub 100 iems just weren't capable which the Doscincos always delivered without fail. Bass is warm, juicy, full bodied, textured. If these descriptions makes no sense it will after you listen to the Doscincos. Details are good enough for us, soundstage is decent even with the forward bass. Vocals are good too, especially compared to Z300s, which vocals tend to be a tiny bit drowned out by bass. We even tried eqing more bass on the Doscincos just for fun, and felt like the vocal and detail quality didn't diminish which really impressed us. Quick note about Cincotres, I don't think we would like the Cincotres because it's often described as a cleaner set. We like a more smoothed out bass curve rather than a clean scoop.
Conclusion: Doscinco is our new daily driver and endgame for the foreseeable future. I currently have no desire to upgrade / sidegrade except for maybe a second pair of Doscincos so we don't have to share! Time to move on to speakers for now!
TLDR: for warm and bassy, get the Blon x HBB Z300 to test out the sound signature, then upgrade to the Ziigaat Doscinco.

2024.05.21 00:56 cytherian FFL E07X Cannon and PL47G2 w/custom aux-LED

I have to say that I'd been a Firefly-Lite customer for a few years and yet had also run into some difficulty with orders (3rd strike was it) that pretty much had me drop the idea of future purchases. But apparently things have improved tremendously. I'd seen the new models put out by Jack with some great options. And the appearance really grabbed me. Like this brand has stepped up to EmisaNoctigon territory. I was already well set for flashlights and didn't plan on buying any more, but the recent sale was too good to pass up. I figured I'd give the brand another try. And I'm glad that I did.
The E07X Cannon is a lumens powerhouse for the size. It's a seriously solid flashlight. I'm really digging the gloss black anodized bezel. It's thick, beefy, and bold. While I did like the polished steel switches on the PL09 and Nov-Mu, this new black finished switch is excellent. Good tactile feel. And one photo I failed to take that I should have, is the magnetic USB-C cover. THIS... is spectacular. The magnet is strong. The covering is secure. And there's no fuss with jamming silicone into an opening to seal it up. You just let go and the cover swings into place with a "snap" sound. This is premium.
The machining is as FFL quality has always been, really good. Excellent threading. Tough flaw-free anodizing. I also like this new clip. It's firm and yet just springy enough. Well thought out.

I also picked up a PL47G2. I'd ordered one last time, but a mistake was made and I was sent a PL47MU. But now, it's on a really good discount... so I figured, why not? Especially with the new FFL emitters. I opted for 4000k and it's a terrific temp. I like it a little better than the 519A 5000k/2700k combo I'd gotten previously. Customaux-LED option. I had 4 quadrant clusters of 4 LED's each - red, yellow, orange, light green. Not sure if the green is "leaking" over to the orange side or if there was 1 emitter mix-up. But overall, I like the glowing gelatin "jujube" look.

The "grater" grid for the tube grip is a bit aggressive, but not too badly. It's maybe a little less extreme than on the DM1.12. I may still cover it with heat-shrink tubing that I'd gotten for the DM1.12. As you can see on that, I put translucent o-rings first, then covered it. It's a little bit "sloppy," but it works well. I'll probably omit the o-rings for the E07X.
Sorry I don't have any comparative beamshots. Will see about trying that out later on.

Hope everyone who has found themselves re-watching the same YouTube comparison videos of the Libra ColouClara ColouClara BW is doing alright. I think probably just one more screen comparison of the three devices at 3% brightness in direct sunlight and we’ll be that one step closer to making a decision. And then maybe take a look at cases, before checking the weight of the Claras versus the Libra. Obviously, colour isn’t needed - but let’s not rule it out. Let’s just double check those Reddit reviews once more, think we’ve almost decided here. Definitely, for real this time.
