2024.05.22 00:39 Pawloveandpavlov Career options for CMHC students

I’m an international student in the united states pursuing a graduate counseling degree (Clinical Mental Health track) and I have been thinking about how less it pays to be a therapist in the early years when you don’t have a license. I will have to go back to my home country in 1-2 years after my masters (depending on visa approval) I have invested a whole lot into the degree, emotionally, geographically, effort-wise but more than anything-financially. I am worried about recovering that investment in the timeframe of 1-2 years. I’m wondering what career options I could explore that pay well (really well) other than going the traditional route of being a therapist-as I believe I could do that even after going home but in my time here I would like to recover my money and experiment a little even.
(For more context- 1. As an international student, you are only allowed to work in the field that you’re trained for or something very very closely related 2. The amount I have invested is between 100k - 110k USD. This includes the tuition, rent, other miscellaneous expenses. 3. The amount I’m hoping to recover is hopefully atleast 10-20k more than the amount mentioned above so I can at the very least repay the tuition loan amount which is about 75-80k 4. Apart from a masters in CMHC by the end of it, I also have a bachelors degree with a major in philosophy, a post graduate diploma in learning disability management, and a post graduate diploma in expressive arts therapy.
Thank you for sticking around if you reached till here lol)

2024.05.22 00:29 Advice_Seeker5 Advice on Student Loan Management

What's up guys. I need a bit of advice. l'm a P2 in a Pharm program where I'll be graduating with $155000 at the end of my program at the age of 26 (combo of unsubsidized and grad plus, payed full tuition out of pocket for undergrad and my masters so nothing to worry about there). I plan on paying off the interest only whilst in my PharmD program, and then tacking the principle when I start working. I hope to work in retail (been in retail since I was 15 years old, pharmacy is something I find genuine joy in). I've asked some pharmacist, and they say just not to worry about the student loans and pay it off little by little and just finish it within 10-15 years, whilst others say live like a pauper and pay it off in 3-5 years and you'll have plenty to spare whilst paying the loans + after finishing the loan payment. I also want to get married and have kids before 30. What path would you say is the best? What would you do? Any, literally any, helpful advice would be appreciated since l'm kind of alone in this situation since I'm the first in my family to undergo this situation. I was gonna try to ask in pharmacy but l'm confident that most of the response there would be 'just don't do pharmacy.

2024.05.22 00:24 medoy student loan servicer account that I did not open

Strange one. Last year I started to get emails from Aidvantage who are a student loan servicer.
The first email gave me an account name.
I periodically get emails saying your account has been paid with an amount.
The emails use my name. My name is not within my email address.
I don't have any student loans.
I've tried calling them but they've stated they can't access the account since the SS# and address I've provided doesn't match what is on file.
Nothing funny on my credit report, but I'd like to resolve this.
Anyone have any ideas on how to proceed?
thanks

2024.05.22 00:14 mrs-fitz13 Scam calls everyday!

Holy hell, what the heck is up with the scam calls lately? I've gotten a few every once in a while about student loan forgiveness, Medicaid, etc... but for the last like three weeks I've been getting calls three to four freaking times a day! It's always "National Credit Services" or "American Credit Services" and I just can't get them to stop! Can't block the number to prevent calls because it's a different number (but all within my area) every time!

2024.05.22 00:11 witchitude The never ending struggle after financial abuse

The problem is there’s never any breathing room for errors. I have never been able to afford savings. As soon as I was 18 I had to go into debt to escape abusive family. Since then it’s been just back to back surviving often starving just to make it through undergrad (sadly even though I was a decent student at a really good school I just couldn’t do well). The way the system worked at the time was that you needed proof that you didn’t have financial support. Either that or proof that you’ve been estranged for 3 years. Of course my parents didn’t agree to that. So I only qualified in my final term of final year undergrad. In January 2020.
There’s so much I could talk about. There are basically no resources for kids in their late teens. I couldn’t drop out because my accommodation at the time was conditional on being enrolled. If you drop out you have two weeks to move out. Basically everything I earned had to go back into rent / living expenses. Student accommodation was cheaper than rent in the city. I was basically trapped and then in the pandemic I couldn’t work part time anymore. I had an incident where a building security staff broke into my apartment ment and tried to enter my room. The management tried to pretend it didn’t happen but eventually had to admit. But there were no consequences for the guy and he was back working 5 days later. So I basically ended up spending all the money I had and an overdraft and a small loan.
So basically everything has been really bad. Obviously the pandemic lasted for forever I moved back to my abusive parents and ended up having to live in a women’s shelter because they broke my laptop so I couldn’t work, and didn’t let me leave.
The women’s shelter system is also kind of a trap (though it saved my life), because you’re forced to go on benefits which are calculated based on a “rent”. You have to live on £350 a month and you’re placed in a random part of the country in a secret location. I had no money so it took 6 months of living in isolation and remote working while part time studying to afford to move out.
Then again I had no money had to waitress and babysit to fund internships. And while on paper I was building a good CV everything was a struggle. I always had only £30. It’s not because of mismanagement either, it was just that by this point I was going to be on net zero no matter what I did. I also am trapped in a bad renting situation because - I don’t have landlord references, I don’t have a guarantor, my salary isn’t 2.5x monthly rent, I’m still a student so can’t be employed full time, and I can’t pay 3 months of rent upfront as an alternative to all of the above. Those are just standard requirements to rent.
I got a talent scholarship to get a masters degree (the only way to move upwards in the industry - and not just for the certificate but the skills which require professional software which I taught myself through free trials but ultimately costs £2000 a year altogether). When I joined I was accused of getting a professor to do my work because I’d genuinely worked so hard on my skills that they were more advanced than the students who studied architecture for 5 years. But at the end of the day, I still had to work every day in order not to be homeless, since the scholarship only covers part of tuition and there are no funding options for masters students. I’m still doing the best in my class but my tiny laptop can’t hold the software.
Recently I found out that the schools finance team made an accounts error and I have to pay an extra £1,100 of tuition. Actually just before I joined in October I noticed an error in one of my enrolment docs. I reached out to them twice to make sure that it didn’t have to pay £1,100. They said it was incorrect.
Well now I have no money but I owe the school. I need to see a dentist, but I don’t have insurance. I’m still in my overdraft, and rent is due. This is financially rock bottom even though the opportunity to study has opened so many doors. I don’t know what to do.
How is it even possible to not end up homeless. I’m just exhausted

2024.05.22 00:07 ChuckleNutzMD ABSURD new federal student loan interest rates

I thought the previous year's interest rates were already crazy at 7.05% and 8.05% for graduate unsubsidized and grad plus loans respectively. But now, this year as of July 1, 2024, interest rates will have INCREASED to 8.08% and 9.08% respectively.
This is outrageous and terrifying to me honestly, especially for us medical students who will be taking out hundreds of thousands in loans. I HATE being exploited by the government like this. They keep claiming they need more doctors, but then they pull shit like this to discourage future applicants. Well, it just means we have to suffer for quite a bit more time to repay these things in the future—and I hate that for us. What do you all think about this?

2024.05.22 00:02 Alternative-Skin-493 Mom is buying a house with my middle sister, with money that would have been our inheritance but isn't helping me or my oldest buy houses ourselves

My mom F60 recently moved out of state with my middle sister F38 and made her previous home her investment property, She had told me F26 and my other sister F 39 that this would end up being our inheritance when she eventually passes. She had started thinking about selling the property to help buy a house with my middle sister. She had asked my oldest sister how she would feel about it and then asked me, I told her I didn't think it would be fair. Mind you my middle sister has no children, and a 80k a year job and splits all of her bills with my mom who lives off of money she gets from her two previous husbands retiremenets. Meanwhile my oldest sister makes about the same as my middle sister but is divorced in a single income household with two teenagers and I make about the same combined with my fiance and have a small baby. The cost of living right now is just impossible and every friend I have my age that does have a house was able to get it because it was either passed down to them, or there parent helped buy it/ sold an old home to them at original value. When I found out my mom would be selling the house and would use it as a down payment with my middle sister i asked if she would help put down payments on houses for me and my oldest sister as well, or if she passed our middle sister would sell that house or buy me and my oldest sister out of it. She ended up selling the house and had about 150k left over after paying off the house and every ounce of debt she has. and I'm pretty sure but not certain that she also paid off my middle sisters student loans that were about 80k. For me and my oldest sister to buy a house a down payment would be around 15k each. that would barely put a dent in the money she has left and after the sheer favoritism she shows our middle sister i', just ready to cut her off entirely. Am I being selfish or greedy in thinking like this? I am just so frustrated in the sheer favoritism she shows my middle sister. any advice would be greatly appreciated

2024.05.22 00:01 Ecstatic-Time-3838 Advice to younger brother

Hi all,
Haven't made a post here before, but I'm looking for advice I can give to my little brother and his girlfriend.
They purchased property about 4 years ago for $30k cash in hopes to build a house. Covid put a wrench in those plans, and I guess they are selling it for $90k. Sale is supposed to go through in a couple weeks. The buyer is financing. Not sure if that has analysis implications for my brother.
They are gonna start looking for a house, now that they will have a pretty good chunk of change for a down payment. As far as I know they have virtually no bills. They live with my parents, didn't go to school so no student loans, my brother drives a beater so no car payment.
What would you guys recommend they do with the money in the meantime? I was thinking a hysa, but I'm not good with money, so I don't want to give them any advice without getting some opinions from you guys. We didn't come from money, so I want to give them some info so they can make the best choice for their future.
They probably won't be buying for another year, as my brother recently started a different job and will receive a 1099. Think they said he has to have a year of income in order for them to secure a loan? She works full time, w2 employee.
Again, I'm not good eoth money. Of some of what I said makes no sense, please feel free to correct me.
Thanks in advance guys!

2024.05.22 00:01 TheQnzFund Dads in debt - options?

Dad (62M) has been depressed last 6 months. Terrible disease and bout of depression for him. Long story short, he recently opened up that his mental illness is financially driven. As his son (26M) I’m looking to get in touch with the right person to figure out what we can do. I’m an engineer and have no experience dealing with this situation. Let me know what you think or who you think we can reach out to.
Also interested to know, if you have the experience, if this is something you think we can manage without defaulting/losing our house
Rough numbers (HCOL area): Dads income - 135k/yr - $6800/mo My income - 110k/yr - $5600/mo
Monthly bills (including mortgage, minimum credit card payments) - $8,300
Debt Home - 450k - 3.1k/mo Credit cards - 70k Student loans - 10k (mine) Utility - 7k
Savings 401k (dad) - 180k Bank (dad) - 26k Bank (me) - 30k
Again, looking for general advice, thinking about calling a debt consolidator to help us make a plan.
Thanks in advance.

2024.05.21 23:59 Looluna714 Would this be reasonable?

My husband and I are starting to get serious about searching for our first home. We want to purchase where we live, which is a VHCOL area (Orange County, Ca). We have 200k+ saved for a down payment, with sizable emergency fund left over (~95k). Would a $5250 PITI be doable? This would allow us to buy a ~810k home.
Gross monthly income: $16,000 Monthly take home pay(after taxes, 401k contributions, health insurance etc): $9,300
No student loan debt, car payment, or credit card debt. After my silly calculations for living costs (groceries, utilities, etc), we would be able to save about $2,500+ a month with this $5,250 PITI payment. What do y’all think? We haven’t gotten a preapproval yet, I’m trying to do my own calculations to see what our absolute maximum buying power would be.
Edit: changed mortgage to PITI

2024.05.21 23:58 No_Dot_9172 Please Help

I’m having a hard time with getting my school tuition and books paid for. I’ve been in the program for a full two semesters now. However, VR&E hasn’t paid out my tuition and books for both semesters now. Thank God I took out student loans just to remain in school because if not, I would NOT be able to attend school. I spoke with my counselor and he states that he tries to get in contact with my VSO at the school and that I have an authorization for the amount to be paid. I speak with my VSO at the school, and she says she certifies each semester on time. How does this happen? Has this ever happened to anyone? Does anyone know why it’s taking so long for my semesters to be paid to the school? Any advice to give? Btw I’m currently in Summer classes now and if it weren’t for my grant, I would not be attending classes because this semester hasn’t been paid either…

2024.05.21 23:56 marsh_dog Is making double payments on a 132k student loan at 3.49% the right move?

Household income is roughly 250k before taxes. Wife and myself are contributing 7% into our Roth 401k and traditional 401k. (14% total).
One car payment at 7% interest, also making double payments.
We have 6 months emergency savings and no other debts.
How much is too much to keep throwing at debt that will take the next 4 years to pay off vs investing or spending on “wants”.
Edit: As I wrote the post I realized paying off the car first would be best. Thanks everyone.

2024.05.21 23:55 onlystonksgoup Trying to see if this makes sense

I own a Jeep and the dealer is offering 21k for it. I owe 8k on it so that’s 13 in equity. I found a 2017 ram 2500 diesel for 39995 and after all negotiations and taxes, trade in etc finance amount is 28k. I’m wondering if it’s something I should just pass on or make the swap. It’s only got 48k miles. I own my house and my income is a little more than 1k a week. Wife brings in a little over 4K every 2 weeks but we do have some debt like her student loans. I pay 505 a month now for my Jeep so I’m sure payments would be close to that.
What’s the finance gurus opinions?

2024.05.21 23:53 SweatyTruck8394 Should I start the home buying process now? Or wait?

Hi, all. I am looking/hoping to buy my first house. I have about 20k saved. I have paid off all of my student loans and I have paid off my car. I have good credit.
Within the next four months, I will be starting a job where I will be making about 20k more than what I currently make. My question is, should I start talking to realtors and potentially bankers now? Or should I wait until I have officially started my new job?
To add: I also have a wedding to pay for. I’m not looking to have anything extravagant- something pretty simple with family.

MAY 21, 2024 WCU.V WORLD COPPER PROVIDES CORPORATE UPDATE
https://preview.redd.it/91jp4nzfpu1d1.png?width=3500&format=png&auto=webp&s=f522daba037da1ca5b6878afe946ddaa26ae1817
Vancouver, British Columbia--(Newsfile Corp. - May 21, 2024) - World Copper Ltd. (TSXV: WCU) (OTCQB: WCUFF) (FSE: 7LY0) ("World Copper" or the "Company") is pleased to provide a general corporate update regarding the Company's assets and direction.
Zonia Project Update
Going forward the Company will be focusing its efforts on the Zonia Project ("Zonia") as our flagship asset, with the aim of working to advance Zonia to a bankable feasibility study and then proceeding into construction and production.
Given the current global copper supply deficit, management's belief is that the short-term solution to the copper supply crisis will come from smaller more efficient copper operations, which are cheaper to build and have less environmental impacts. Recent events in the sector have shown that major mining companies are hesitating to take on very large-scale, high capital intensity projects by looking for partners to share the risk and costs, or by targeting smaller assets and innovative or conventional leaching technologies.
Zonia fits into these new copper market dynamics perfectly offering a viable smaller scale and lower cost operation that can be permitted and constructed in half the time required on average to develop new larger concentrate mines. Being a past producer, Zonia's mineralization is pre-stripped resulting in a 1:1 strip ratio for our new operations, and it has power and water on site.
We recently announced the formation of a Technical Advisory Committee that will play a lead role in the proposed development and construction of the Zonia mining operation. Derek White and Joe Philips have joined us as advisors at World Copper. Derek is an industry leader in the copper sector having developed and built several copper mines. As the former CEO of KGHM International he built the Sierra Gorda mine in Chile and the Carlota mine in Arizona. Most recently he completed construction of the Premier Gold mine in BC. He is a consummate mine builder. Derek will guide the World Copper team in taking Zonia down the path to production. Joe Philips brings a wealth of mine building experience having lead construction on 14 mining operations in 11 different counties. His upgrading and expansion of the SX-EW plant for Tres Valles in Chile will be of particular importance to our Zonia development process.
Our seasoned team are looking to put the asset into production within 3 to 5 years and at a quarter of the costs of conventional concentrate operations. Zonia is uniquely positioned with a strategic location in Arizona allowing it to supply the domestic US refined copper market, which is currently in dire need for US-manufactured cathodes, Zonia has the potential to become a net-zero facility benefiting from low energy consumption, favorable energy mix and emission compensation returns.
World Copper has adopted a two-phase plan to move the Zonia project down the production track. Phase one would target only the portion of the project located on private land. Phase two will target copper mineralization located on non-private land so that it could be permitted for future inclusion into the anticipated mine plan. To satisfy the parameters of a bankable feasibility study Phase one will move to convert a major portion of the inferred resources in from the PEA to indicated resources. This will most likely entail an infill drilling campaign. Other Phase one programs will include environmental studies, land and water use permits, metallurgical studies, mine planning, engineering, financing modelling and construction planning.
Phase two programs will comprise primarily of permitting the BLM land (non-private) that surrounds the Zonia private land, environmental studies, and some exploration drilling. Our BLM lands are 3 times the size of our private land package and have the potential to increase our copper resource exponentially. These phase two programs will be initiated in parallel with the phase one activity as the timeline to receiving exploration and mining permits for these areas are longer.
Zonia's historical preliminary economic assessment (PEA) in 2018 concluded that the economics of the project are excellent and gives World Copper the assurance to advance the project through feasibility. The historical PEA outlines an open-pit, copper-oxide heap leach project with a 9-year mine life and favourable economics. The base case uses a $2.00/lb designed pit shell with a grade cutoff of 0.17% total copper. The PEA was prepared by Global Resource Engineering Ltd. ("GRE") of Denver, Colorado, in accordance with the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) NI 43-101. GRE reported on the scoping-level capital and operating costs, and project economics associated with the potential development of the Zonia copper oxide project. The full report entitled "Preliminary Economic Assessment, NI 43-101 Technical Report Zonia Copper Project Yavapai County, Arizona, USA" with an Effective Date of March 22, 2018, and an Issue Date of April 17, 2018, is available on SEDAR+ or can be downloaded using this link.
The preliminary economic assessment is preliminary in nature and includes inferred mineral resources that are considered too speculative geologically to have the economic considerations applied to them that would enable them to be categorized as mineral reserves; there is no certainty that the preliminary economic assessment will be realized.
The updated mineral resource estimate for Zonia (see news release dated February 23, 2023), includes 75.7 million short tons grading 0.30% total-copper (Indicated Resources) containing 450.5 million pounds of copper and 122.0 million short tons grading 0.24% total-copper (Inferred Resources) containing 575.4 million pounds of copper, which is a significant expansion of the historical resource estimate.
Further information on Zonia's updated resource estimated can be found in the technical report entitled "National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report: Updated Mineral Resource Estimate for the Zonia Copper Project Yavapai County, Arizona USA" dated December 20, 2022 and dated effective September 1, 2022. Mineral Resources are not Mineral Reserves and do not have demonstrated economic viability. Inferred Mineral Resources are that part of the Mineral Resource for which quantity and grade, or quality, are estimated based on limited geologic evidence and sampling, which is sufficient to imply but not verify grade or quality continuity. Inferred Mineral Resources may not be converted to Mineral Reserves. It is reasonably expected, though not guaranteed, that the majority of Inferred Mineral Resources could be upgraded to Indicated Mineral Resources with continued exploration.
The Company is also currently reviewing additional assets in the United States. The United States has declared copper a critical metal, and it is a consistently mining friendly jurisdiction. 4 US states were listed in the top 10 most attractive jurisdictions globally by Fraser Institute (that included Arizona with rank #7). Both the Department of Energy and the Department of defence have created funding programs for copper and other critical metals. By shifting focus to US copper markets World Copper will have a new captive and supportive potential pool of interest.
Escalones Project Update
Escalones remains the largest undeveloped copper oxide deposit in Chile and is one of the most desirable copper projects in the sector. Further drilling at Escalones is needed in order to advance the project, and this drilling will also assist in de-risking Escalones. The Company is currently in discussions with the Chilean authorities for drilling permits and to better understand the next steps in formalizing the directives under the new sanctuary of nature established by presidential decree (see news release dated January 23, 2024).
Loan Extension
The Company has also, subject to TSX Venture Exchange ("TSXV") acceptance, entered into a loan extension agreement (the "Extension Agreement") made as of May 18, 2024 with E.L. II Properties Trust (the "Lender") for loans assumed by World Copper in connection with the merger with Cardero Resource Corp. by plan of arrangement in January 2022 in the aggregate amount of CAD $1,958,019.88 (based on a CAD - USD exchange rate of 1.3570 as of February 29, 2024) (the "Loans"). Pursuant to the Extension Agreement, the Loans will bear interest at a rate of 8% per annum compounded quarterly, and the due dates for the Loans will be extended by two years.
The Company has agreed to issue the Lender in aggregate 6,419,737 non-transferable bonus common share purchase warrants (each, a "Bonus Warrant"), each exercisable to purchase one common share of the Company at an exercise price of CAD $0.305 per share for a period of two years, subject to acceptance by the TSXV. All securities issued pursuant to the Loans will be subject to a hold period of four months and one day in Canada from the date of issuance.
As the Lender is a trust owned and controlled by Robert Kopple, who is a director of the Company, the transaction constitutes a related party transaction pursuant to Multilateral Instrument 61 101 - Protection of Minority Security Holders in Special Transactions ("MI 61-101"). The Company is relying on Sections 5.5(a) and 5.7(1)(a) of MI 61-101 for an exemption from the formal valuation and minority shareholder approval requirements, respectively, of MI 61-101, as, at the time the Extension Agreement was entered into by the Company with the Lender, neither the fair market value of the subject matter of, nor the fair market value of the transaction exceeded 25% of the Company's market capitalization.
Strategic Marketing Agreement
The Company also announces that, subject to TSX Venture Exchange acceptance, it has entered into an consulting agreement with Upcountry Strategy Ltd. ("Upcountry") of Cobble Hill, BC, whereby Upcountry will provide advice to the Company's board of directors and senior management on public company administration, the development and implementation of a marketing strategy for the Company and the review of potential strategic opportunities. The term of the agreement with Upcountry is for six months, effective May 2, 2024, and may be terminated at any time, by either party, with 30 days written notice. Upcountry will receive a consulting fee of USD$600,000 to be paid over 90 days. As of the date hereof, to the Company's knowledge, Upcountry (including its directors and officers) does not own any securities of the Company and has an arm's length relationship with the Company.

2024.05.21 23:43 Keto543 New Grad Advice- WWYD

How would you budget/save with a 135K salary? I’m a 29 F recent grad from a masters program. Currently have 60K in a 401K, 3K in checking. 40K in student loans. Anticipating needing a new car soon. But no mortgage or rent. No credit card debt. Feeling behind because I’m starting my career later in life than others who were able to save and buy a house in their 20s. Thank you in advance!

2024.05.21 23:42 Primary_Librarian_43 Looking to pursue an MA in Law from UoB

Hey, I'm a Philosophy undergrad from India, looking to settle in the UK as a lawyer with an MA in Law from UoB. I did get into LLB programs but I cannot afford that, but I can go there and prove my mettle, if given the opportunity to do so. Can anyone help me out regarding the employability aspect of this degree, and whether the Magic Circle hires people from this degree if they have good standing? Can I pay my student loans off and yet mantain a decent lifestyle in the major cities?
I know about the SQE, and of course that matters. Some help/ mentorship and guidance would really help as I'm really lost right now, penniless and I want to leave this country and make a mark. Have been feeling pretty depressed, where I am devoid of options. MA in Law, might just be my final opportunity - provided the employability is good.

2024.05.21 23:40 Own_Pen1046 Should I not use student loans?

I'm a current university student and only used student loans for tuition in my first year, I only did it because everyone I know was doing it. But I work part-time and full-time, which allows me to just pay for tuition with my own money. there are always a bunch of stories of people who graduated and struggle to pay off loans which increase every year, just wondering if I would be saving myself a headache by just paying out of my own money?

2024.05.21 23:39 Interesting-Try-6757 Options for non-union workers

I’ll start this by saying I support the right to unionize but not the union itself, so I find myself as an ESE choosing to work during the strike. However, due to the amount of striking student workers they have cancelled my lab section for this week and indefinitely until the strike ends.
My question is, what are my rights here? It’s not a lot of money on the table but it’s still vital to my ability to support myself and my family. I feel as though I should still be able to work my scheduled hours, and I don’t think it’s fair to administer collective punishment on the remaining student workers.
Also, I’d like to avoid the “hurrdurr you should’ve supported the union” comments, please, but I’d be happy to debate my reasoning for withholding union support.

2024.05.21 23:35 Historical_Key4030 Was Muhammad illiterate?

The Quran claims that Muhammad is illiterate:
Those who follow the Messenger, the illiterate (ummi) prophet... S. 7:157
Definition of 'Illiterate':-
a person who is unable to read or write.
Therefore, if we find sufficient evidence from the Quran and the ahadith which demonstrate that Muhammad was literate, it would necessitate a reevaluation of the Quranic assertion of his illiteracy.
The prevailing belief among many Muslims is that the historical figure of Muhammad was illiterate and therefore incapable of producing the Quran. However, it is important to note that both the Quran and the ahadith provide evidence that Muhammad possessed the ability to read and write!

Evidence from the Quran

The following verses commanded Muhammad to read:
Read! (Iqra) In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists) … Read! (Iqra) And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who has taught (the writing) by the pen [the first person to write was Prophet Idrees (Enoch)], S. 96:1, 3-4
The mention of the pen clearly indicates that Muhammad was being directed to read a written text, rather than merely recite spoken words.
In fact, the Quran says that Allah will make Muhammad read the Quran so that he won’t forget it:
We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget S. 87:6
Other places where Muhammad is commanded to read the Quran include:
When you read the Quran, you shall seek refuge in GOD from Satan the rejected. S. 16:98
When you read the Quran, we place between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter an invisible barrier. S. 17:45
A Quran that we have released slowly, in order for you to read it to the people over a long period, although we sent it down all at once. S. 17:106 And lo! It is a revelation of the Lord of the Worlds, Which the True Spirit hath brought down Upon thy heart, that thou mayst be (one) of the warners, In plain Arabic speech. And lo! it is in the Scriptures of the men of old. Is it not a token for them that the doctors of the Children of Israel know it? And if We had revealed it unto one of any other nation than the Arabs, And he had read it unto them, they would not have believed in it. S. 26:192-199
Your Lord knows that you meditate during two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, and so do some of those who believed with you. GOD has designed the night and the day, and He knows that you cannot always do this. He has pardoned you. Instead, you shall read what you can of the Quran. He knows that some of you may be ill, others may be traveling in pursuit of GOD's provisions, and others may be striving in the cause of GOD. You shall read what you can of it, and observe the contact prayers (Salat), give the obligatory charity (Zakat), and lend GOD a loan of righteousness. Whatever good you send ahead on behalf of your souls, you will find it at GOD far better and generously rewarded. And implore GOD for forgiveness. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful. 73:20
and, when the Koran is read to them, do not adore? S. 84:21
The evidence strongly suggests that Muhammad had access to a manuscript from which he could read to the people. Without access to such a manuscript, it raises the question of what he would have been reading from.
If a Muslim claims that the above texts do not necessarily mean that Muhammad was reading an actual book, because there was no Quranic manuscript for him to read, note what the following passage states:
Those who disbelieve say: "This (the Qur'an) is nothing but a lie that he (Muhammad SAW) has invented, and others have helped him at it, so that they have produced an unjust wrong (thing) and a lie." And they say: "Tales of the ancients, which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon." S. 25:4-5
Not only did Muhammad have the Quran written down, showing that he had access to an actual manuscript that he could read, the Quran even refers to pure pages that Muhammad was reading to the people:
A messenger from Allah, reading purified pages (yatlu suhufan mutahharatan) S. 98:1-2
The term suhuf refers to an actual scripture just as the following verse proves:
The Books (suhuf) of Abraham and Moses. S. 87:19
Therefore, we can now conclude that the Quran provides compelling evidence supporting the claim that Muhammad possessed the ability to read and write. A more in-depth examination of the ahadith is now necessary to further substantiate this assertion.

Evidence from the Ahadith

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Once the Prophet wrote a letter or had an idea of writing a letter. The Prophet was told that they (rulers) would not read letters unless they were sealed. So the Prophet got a silver ring made with "Muhammad Allah's Apostle" engraved on it. As if I were just observing its white glitter in the hand of the Prophet… (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 3, Number 65)
Narrated Anas bin Malik: When the Prophet (ﷺ) intended to write to the Byzantines, it was said to him, "Those people do not read your letter unless it is stamped." So the Prophet (ﷺ) took a silver ring and got 'Muhammad, the Apostle of Allah' engraved on it .... as if I am now looking at its glitter in his hand. (Sahih Al Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 72, Number 764)
Narrated Anas bin Malik: When the Prophet (ﷺ) intended to write to the Byzantines, the people said, "They do not read a letter unless it is sealed (stamped)." Therefore the Prophet (ﷺ) took a silver ring----as if I am looking at its glitter now----and its engraving was: 'Muhammad, Apostle of Allah'. (Sahih Al Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 89, Number 276)
Narrated 'Ursa: The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with 'Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death). (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 88)
Narrated 'Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah: Ibn 'Abbas said, "When the ailment of the Prophet became worse, he said, 'Bring for me (writing) paper and I will write for you a statement after which you will not go astray.' But 'Umar said, 'The Prophet is seriously ill, and we have got Allah's Book with us and that is sufficient for us.' But the companions of the Prophet differed about this and there was a hue and cry. On that the Prophet said to them, 'Go away (and leave me alone). It is not right that you should quarrel in front of me." Ibn 'Abbas came out saying, ""It was most unfortunate (a great disaster) that Allah's Apostle was prevented from writing that statement for them because of their disagreement and noise. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 3, Number 114)
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When the time of the death of the Prophet (ﷺ) approached while there were some men in the house, and among them was Umar bin Al-Khatttab, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Come near let me write for you a writing after which you will never go astray."Umar said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) is seriously ill, and you have the Qur'an, so Allah's Book is sufficient for us." The people in the house differed and disputed. Some of them said, "Come near so that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) may write for you a writing after which you will not go astray," while some of them said what Umar said. When they made much noise and differed greatly before the Prophet, he said to them, "Go away and leave me." IbnAbbas used to say, "It was a great disaster that their difference and noise prevented Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) from writing that writing for them. (Sahih Al Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 92, Number 468)
Narrated Yazid ibn Abdullah: We were at Mirbad. A man with dishevelled hair and holding a piece of red skin in his hand came. We said: You appear to be a bedouin. He said: Yes. We said: Give us this piece of skin in your hand. He then gave it to us and we read it. It contained the text: "From Muhammad, Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), to Banu Zuhayr ibn Uqaysh. If you bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, offer prayer, pay zakat, pay the fifth from the booty, and the portion of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his special portion (safi), you will be under by the protection of Allah and His Apostle." We then asked: Who wrote this document for you? He replied: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). (Sunan Abi Dawud Book 19, Number 2993)
Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib (RA):The Prophet (ﷺ) sent 'Ali to Yemen. The narrator mentioned the complete Hadith. He said, "Ali sent a letter regarding their (the people of Yemen) acceptance of Islam. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) read the letter, he prostrated in gratitude to Allah the Most High for that." [Reported by al-Baihaqi].
Muhammad also had access to Syriac books. He also commanded Zaid Bin Thabit to learn the Syriac Language and the book of the Jews:
Ibn Hajar said in Al-Fath: It can be made that he learned their language, reading and writing, because he used to read their books to him and write to them if he wanted to write to them. This is indicated by Al-Tirmidhi’s classification of this hadith by saying: Chapter on what was mentioned in teaching the Syriacs, and in it he mentioned another narration that says In it Zaid: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, commanded me to learn Syriac, and in Sunan Abu Dawud: Zaid bin Thabit - may God be pleased with him - said: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, commanded me to learn the book of the Jews for him, and he said: By God, no Jews believed in my book. So I learned it, and only half a month passed before I mastered it. I would write to him when he wrote, and I would read to him when he wrote to him.
The author of Awn al-Ma’boud said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, commanded me, that is, to learn the book of the Jews, so I learned for him, that is, for the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. He said, meaning, the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, is a conjunction of my command to explain the reason for the matter. The Jews did not believe in my book, that is, I fear if I commanded a Jew. By writing a book to the Jews, or reading a book that the Jews had come to add or subtract from, so I learned it, i.e., a Jewish book, until I mastered it with the dictionary dhāl and waqf, meaning I knew it, mastered it, and taught it, so I used to write for him, i.e., for the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, whenever he wrote, i.e., if he wanted to write.
Al-Tahawi said in Al-Mu’tasir:
It was narrated from Zaid Bin Thabbit, that he said:
The Messenger (PBUH) said: “Do you know Syriac well? I receive Syriac books.” Zaid said: “No.” The Messenger (PBUH) said: “Learn it (Syriac Language).” Zaid said: “So I learned it in seventeen days.”

Muhammad's Literacy in the Sirat(s)

Muhammad could read and write as we read in Sirat Ibn Ishaq, Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir' by Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad ibn Sa'd, and Al Sira Al Nabawiyya by Ibn Kathir:
Sirat Ibn Ishaq

Page 106, about the cave of Hira revelation:
So I (Muhammad) read it, and he departed from me.
Page 649, about correspondence with Musaylima
Musaylima had written to the apostle: ‘From Musaylima the apostle of God to Muhammad the apostle of God. Peace upon you. I have been made partner with you in authority. To us belongs half the land and to Quraysh half, but Quraysh are a hostile people.’ Two messengers brought this letter. A shaykh of Ashja’ told me on the authority of Salama b. Nu’aym b. Mas’ud al-Ashja’I from his father Nu’aym: I heard the apostle saying to them when he read his letter ‘What do you say about it?’ They said that they said the same as Musaylima. He replied, ‘By God, were it not that heralds are not to be killed I would behead the pair of you !’ Then he wrote to Musaylima: ‘From Muhammad the apostle of God to Musaylima the liar. Peace be upon him who follows the guidance. The earth is God’s. He lets whom He will of His creatures inherit it and the result is to the pious. This was at the end of the year 10.

The apostle wrote to the Jews of Khaybar according to what a freedman of the family of Zayd b. Thabit told me from ‘Ikrima or from Sa‘id b. Jubayr from Ibn ‘Abbas: “In the name of God the compassionate the merciful from Muhammad the apostle of God friend and brother of Moses who confirms what Moses brought…”
Volume 1, Parts II.73.2
He (Ibn Sa'd) said: Al-Haytham Ibn 'Adi al-Ta'i informed us; he said: Mujàlid Ibn Sa'id and Zakariyá Ibn Abi Zà'idah informed us on the authority of al-Sha'bi; he said: The Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him, used to write after the style of the Quraysh: In Thy name, 0 Allah! Then the verse, "Embark therein! In the name of Allah be its course and its mooring," (Qur'an, 11:41) was revealed, **and he began to write: In the name of Allah.**Then the verse, "Cry unto Allah or cry unto the Beneficent" (Qur'an, 17:110) was revealed, and he began to write; In the name of Allah the Beneficent. Then the verse, "Lo ! it is from Solomon, and Lo ! it is: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful" (Qur'an, 27: 30) was revealed, and he began to write: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Volume 1, Parts II.73.3
He (Ibn Sa'd) said: Al-Haytham Ibn 'Adi informed us; Dalham Ibn Salih and Abu Bakr al-Hudhali informed us on the authority of 'Abd Allah Ibn Buraydah, he on the authority of his father, Buraydah Ibn al-Husayb alAslami; (second chain) he (Ibn Sa'd) said: Muhammad Ibn Ishaq related to us on the authority of Yazid Ibn Rumàn and al-Zuhri; (third chain) he (Ibn Sa'd) said: Al-Hasan Ibn 'Umàrah related to us on the authority of Firas, he on the authority of al-Sha'bi; their narrations are mixed up: He (Ibn Sa'd) said: The Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him, wrote [P.20] an epistle to the people of Yaman detailing in it the regulations of Islam and duties on animals and properties. He directed them to treat his Companions and messengers well, and his messengers were Mu'adh Ibn Jabal and Malik Ibn Murarah. He informed them about the coming of their messengers to him and acknowledged the message which he had received from them. They said: The Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him, wrote personal letters to several persons of Yaman; the names of some of them are, alHarith Ibn 'Abd Kulál, Shurayh Ibn 'Abd Kulal, Nu'aym Ibn 'Abd Kulál, Nu'man the prince of Dhu Yazan, Ma'àfir and Hamdan and Zur'ah of Ru'ayn; and the last was the first of Himyarites to embrace Islam... The Apostle of Alláh, may Allah bless him, wrote to them that Malik Ibn Murárah had delivered the message and defended their right in absentia. They said: The Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him, wrote to Musaylimah, the liar, may Allah damn him, inviting him to join the fold of Islam, and sent it through 'Amr Ibn Ummayyah [P. 26] al-Damri. Musaylimah wrote a reply to his epistle saying that he (Musaylimah) was a prophet like him, and asked him to divide the Earth; he also added that the Quraysh were not just. The Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him, said: Curse him; Allah has also cursed him. The Prophet wrote to him: your letter (full of) falsehood and fabrications against Allah has reached me... They said: The Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him, wrote a similar epistle to Bang Mu'awiyah, a branch of Kindah.
'Ath'ath Ibn Zahr and Anas lbn Mudrik waited on the Apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him, with the members of the Khath'am after Jarir Ibn 'Abd Allah had broken Dhua'l-Khalasah and had slain those of Khath'am whom he had slain. Then they said: We believe in Allah, His Apostle and what was revealed by Allah. (They said) write a document for us so that we may follow what might be written therein. Thereupon he wrote a document for him and Jarir Ibn 'Abd Allah and those present testified to it.

The evidence presented in this post strongly supports the claim that Muhammad was literate and not illiterate, as claimed by the Quran and the Muslims! So, the answer to the question in the title is a BIG NO.

2024.05.21 23:35 urLocalpoopstain I'm not paying my student loans back (update)

https://www.reddit.com/antiwork/s/l28Gz8mgaQ
So I posted this a while back and wanted to update, I still haven't paid anything on my loans at all.
For context I didn't pay because my school failed to meet the promises they made when it comes to supporting its students even after graduation.
A part of this shattered me upon graduation because I was completely overwhelmed with my life and what I wanted to do.
When I first posted this I got a lot of support from this sub which I appreciated but I also got a lot of backlash. People called me lazy or irresponsible (which I guess would be slightly true if you read the title with no context and wanna be a keyboard warrior)
Any who I knew that the educational system failed me you guys who supported me gave me the resources and warnings I needed even though I was mainly ranting.
My loans have been forgiven turns out that the school I attended was going some illegal mess (foraging graduation rates, falsifying promises to students etc)
I got an email at the beginning of May telling me to stop paying my loans anf I thought it was a scam until I traced the email back to the studentaid.gov website.
After confirming I realized that I'm actually going to be forgiven for every cent and my credit history would also be wiped of the loans.
So....yeah to everyone that was flamming me (or attempting too) just know that taking advantage of stressed underaged studentsanfd gas lighting them into going to school for the sake of "The american dream" isn't always the best way to go through life.
Anyways I work in logistics now and I have for a while. I work good hours have great benifets and I work from home (I actually love my job) I absolutely hated my last job I was miserable and contemplated killing myself.
I do feel like a weight was lifted from my shoulders though school should be this expensive and jobs shouldn't be miserable that's no way to live.
I want to live life the way I want to. I'm still in my 20s I don't think decisions I made in my early teens with intentions on bettering my life should burden me still to this day.
No one should feel that way.
