Google just kicked off its I/O Developerโ€™s Conference, announcing a wide array of updates across its AI ecosystem โ€” including enhancements across its flagship Gemini model family and a new video generation model to rival OpenAIโ€™s Sora.
https://youtu.be/o6ne_YJXl0A?si=A2TcqT_mmGuWssaV
Gemini model updates:
  • New updates to 1.5 Pro include a massive 2M context window extension and enhanced performance in code, logic, and image understanding.
  • Gemini 1.5 Pro can also utilize the long context to analyze a range media types, including documents, videos, audio, and codebases.
  • Google announced Gemini 1.5 Flash, a new model optimized for speed and efficiency with a context window of 1M tokens.
  • Gemma 2, the next generation of Googleโ€™s open-source models, is launching in the coming weeks, along with a new vision-language model called PaliGemma.
  • Gemini Advanced subscribers can soon create customized personas called โ€˜Gemsโ€™ from a simple text description, similar to ChatGPT GPTs.
Video and image model upgrades:
  • Google revealed a new video model called Veo, capable of generating over 60-second, 1080p resolution videos from text, image, and video prompts.
  • The new Imagen 3 text-to-image model was also unveiled with better detail, text generation, and natural language understanding than its predecessor.
  • VideoFX text-to-video tool, featuring storyboard scene-by-scene creation and the ability to add music to generations.
  • VideoFX is launching in a โ€˜private previewโ€™ in the U.S. for select creators, while ImageFX (with Imagen 3) is available to try via a waitlist.
Why it matters: Geminiโ€™s already industry-leading context window gets a 2x boost, enabling endless new opportunities to utilize AI with massive amounts of information. Additionally, Sora officially has competition with the impressive Veo demo โ€” but which one will make it to public access first?

๐Ÿ”ŽGoogleโ€™s AI agents and AI search upgrades

https://preview.redd.it/os2ctrpt7n0d1.png?width=1292&format=png&auto=webp&s=03d997eb0c87b391cc786467bacb09ed8138dd68
Google just showcased its new AI agent project โ€˜Project Astraโ€™, alongside a slew of updates to infuse AI across search and enable Gemini to reason and take more advanced actions for users.
Progress on AI agents:
  • Google announced Project Astra, a real-time AI agent prototype that can see, hear, and take actions on a userโ€™s behalf.
  • The demo showcased a voice assistant responding to what it sees and hears, including code, images, and video โ€” capable of advanced reasoning and recall.
  • Public access for Astra is expected through the Gemini app later this year.
  • Google also showed off โ€˜AI teammatesโ€™, agents that can answer questions on emails, meetings, and other data within Workspace.
  • Live is also rolling out in the coming months, allowing users to speak and converse with Gemini in near real-time.
Search upgrades:
  • Google Search now features expanded AI Overviews, advanced planning capabilities, and AI-organized search results.
  • Gemini will be able to execute more complex planning, such as planning, maintaining, and updating trip itineraries.
  • Search will also receive โ€˜multi-step reasoningโ€™ capabilities, allowing Gemini to break down questions and speed up research.
  • Users can also now ask questions with video, allowing Search to analyze visual content and provide helpful AI Overviews.
Why it matters: We officially have a new voice assistant battle โ€” with OpenAI and Google both showcasing mind-blowing new capabilities in just the last two days alone. Also, despite rumblings of an OpenAI search product and excitement over platforms like Perplexity, itโ€™s going to be difficult to unseat the king of search. Especially as they integrate advanced AI across the entire ecosystem in an impressive fashion.

๐Ÿš—Former Cruise CEO starts robotics firm with ex-Tesla AI manager

  • Former Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt, who resigned in November following a self-driving car accident, has launched a new robotics firm called The Bot Company with former Tesla AI Manager Paril Jain.
  • The Bot Company aims to develop robots that handle everyday chores to give people more free time, and has already raised $150 million from investors.
  • The announcement of The Bot Company comes amid significant challenges for Cruise, which had its self-driving operations suspended by the California DMV following a pedestrian accident.

๐Ÿง Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's co-founder and chief scientist, has left the company

Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's co-founder and longtime chief scientist, has left the company. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the news on X, expressing his sadness and gratitude for Sutskever's contributions. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI's research director, will step up as a chief scientist.
Sutskever's departure comes amidst reports of disagreements with Altman over OpenAI's direction, mainly concerns about rushing AI-powered product launches at the expense of safety. The situation escalated last November when Sutskever and OpenAI CTO Mira Murati approached the company's previous board to express their concerns, leading to a brief attempt to fire Altman. However, Altman was swiftly reinstated, and much of the old board resigned.
Why does it matter?
As one of the most accomplished minds in AI, Sutskever's departure raises questions about the future of OpenAI's approach to AI development and safety. The incident also highlights the growing tensions within the AI industry between rapidly commercializing AI technologies and the need for responsible development and deployment practices.

2024.05.15 21:44 PurePraxisHF More than 1,000 high-level DUP messages show party top brass mocking the Catholic Church, laughing at rivals and deputy First Ministerโ€™s care for the vulnerable

https://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/health/coronavirus/more-than-1000-high-level-dup-messages-show-party-top-brass-mocking-the-catholic-church-laughing-at-rivalsand-deputy-first-ministers-care-for-the-vulnerable/a1175830802.html
Remarkable insight into DUP Executive team during the Executive after Edwin Poots handed over massive WhatsApp group โ€“ unlike Michelle Oโ€™Neill who deliberately wiped her messages after being given legal advice not to do so
More than 1,000 internal text messages between the DUP's most senior figures have been published by the Covid Inquiry, providing an unprecedented insight into what the party really thought and how it operated during the pandemic. The WhatsApp messages, some of which are acutely embarrassing for senior party figures, are being made public after they were given to the inquiry by former DUP minister Edwin Poots, now the Assembly Speaker, and have been published tonight.
That is in stark contrast to Sinn Fรฉin, whose Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill admitted to the inquiry yesterday that she deliberately deleted everything from all her devices despite being warned by the Head of the Civil Service not to do so and despite being given written legal advice which specifically said text messages and WhatsApps should not be deleted.
So far, the inquiry hasn't published a single internal Sinn Fรฉin message.
The DUP messages are from a WhatsApp group containing its Executive ministers, special advisers, and other senior party figures.
They show the party lampooning the Catholic Church, a message from Emma Little Pengelly that the public were looking for a "strong man", but also Mrs Little Pengelly's personal concern for some of the most deprived members of society, reminding colleagues that she came from a poor background.
The inquiry has made multiple redactions to the 63 pages of messages, some of which are hard to follow for that reason.
One of the individuals whose name has been blacked out appears to be Economy Minister Diane Dodds, who talks about going to vote in the European Parliament, and another is First Minister Arlene Foster, who confirmed that in oral testimony today.
However, there is no way to know how many other individuals were involved but have their names redacted.
The messages begin when Stormont returned at the start of 2020 following three years without devolved government.
Someone whose name has been blacked out by the inquiry said on 17 January 2020: "SF doesn't seem to have matured at all!!"
Emma Little Pengelly - then a special adviser but now deputy First Minister - replied sarcastically: "Well, why not - let English taxpayers subsidise our free prescriptions, lower rates, no water charges, lower tuition fees and free prescriptions...but hey, how dare you guys starve us of funding? #Perfidious Albion".
Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots responded: "And a ยฃ100m pa on welfare mitigation". Education Minister Peter Weir said: "Are any of [us] really surprised?"
The first reference to covid is on 23 January when an individual whose name has been blacked out said: "I hear there's a suspected case of this virus in RVH."
In apparent reference to Sinn Fรฉin calling Michelle O'Neill 'joint head of government', someone said "this must be a new title bestowed on Michelle"; another person said: "they are at this all the time".
Another person whose name is hidden said: Certainly they cannot have that on official communications".
Mr Weir, whose messages are often laden with humour, said: "Perhaps I should start calling myself George Clooney, it's just as accurate".
The Education Minister said on 13 March: "I see on PA, Archbishop Eamon Martin is writing to me urging me to close all the schools. Wasn't aware of his qualifications in virology."
Someone whose name has been blacked out said: "Write back and tell him we don't live in the South and that his institution hasn't the best track record of looking out for the welfare of kids."
The following day, in an apparent reference to Sinn Fรฉin, someone denounced "panicking people" and "totally irresponsible" behaviour.
On 14 March, in a reference to civil servants, someone said that "some of the officials don't inspire me".
The next day, Mr Weir said that solicitor Kevin Winters had launched a judicial review of the decision not to close schools. An unidentified person responded: "Read SF for KW". Mr Weir replied: "Indeed."
The messages show that DUP ministers genuinely believed they would be hurting people - and even endangering lives - by taking radical measures to shut down society.
But in their evidence to the inquiry several DUP ministers, including Arlene Foster and Edwin Poots, now accept that they should have locked down sooner.
On 14 March, Mr Weir said that "above all other considerations will be our protection of human life, which the best opportunity to do so is following the professional advice. If in the long run we can spare one extra family from the tragic loss of a loved one then we will have done the right thing rather than the politics of panic of others."
In another message, he said: "There is crazy stuff going about which if acted upon would simply cost lives."
On 15 March, Emma Little Pengelly lamented how teachers seemed to think they wouldn't be going to work once schools closed.
Mr Weir replied: "We could do with a few unnamed ministers not coming to work."
Two days later, Mr Poots said he was "under pressure with CAFRE", the agricultural college. Referring to Sinn Fรฉin, he said: "The public are looking to us for leadership and we can't afford to be scrapping with them. That doesn't mean giving them want they want but need agreement."
Ms Little Pengelly's influence as Mrs Foster's key spad is evident. On 17 March, she set out how lockdown was likely days away and they needed to propose multiple measures including a single website for all pandemic information and "a stateswomanlike address to NI by FM and DFM".
She said: "We also need to be aware that in behaviour science terms we are now dealing with emergency, war time like circumstance - ergo people want to see what is termed in political science as 'strong man' political leaders - (now strong women..) - this is very well established. Strong and serious, calm and professional."
She urged ministers to be "empathetic and understanding" to the pressures faced by those struggling financially, reminding them that "those on working tax credit get free school meals (FSM}, many on that benefit DO work but may find themselves on reduced hours or redundant...and many of those on FSMs are our voters (I am saying this as a child who was a FSM child for many years)."
There is a gap of about a month in the messages. On 22 April, Mr Weir said: "Hargey has [another few words have been blacked out by the inquiry as 'irrelevant and sensitive']! She's had a tough paper round clearly."

2024.05.15 21:42 spacemarine3 Is the game playable with mods?

As the title says, are mods playable or is that aspect of the game still bugged? Me and some friends recently decided to go back to Payday 2 after a few years and we were met with the game not even launching. A bunch of troubleshooting later I managed to get it to work for 2 of my friends by deleting the WSOCK32.dll (i believe this is the name) file and the game generated a separate file for them, I believe called IPHLPAPI.dll. Now after doing this they can run the base game with no mods, but as soon as they try mods it refuses to start again.
I on the other hand have not gotten my game to work so I'm reinstalling it after trying pretty much everything under the sun excluding going to the Overkill offices, giving them my PC and saying "plz fix".
So, has anyone gotten new or old mods to work or if you had the same issues can you recommend a fix? The game is the Steam version and we tried both options, the normal Payday 2 and the Modern CPU update option.
Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

2024.05.15 21:37 Weary-Bell-4541 Why is ChatGPT not using other strategies to create an super intelligent AI?

I can't seem to figure out why ChatGPT is only (as I believe) using an transformer architecture?
I mean like I am building an AI with the goal of being very, very accurate and efficient in generalization and just be very intelligent.
I am using several methods most of them already existing and few of them which I came up with.
My AI is divididen in parts:
  1. Read, 2. Creative thinking, 3. Logical/Critical thinking, 4. Write, 5. Memory.
For read and write I am using existing architectures. And for the memory I am using something way different from AI but definitely makes the AI smart.
Thanks to my memory it can learn in real time based on prompts. Eg: 7+9 = 16. It still needs a ton of data to actually succefully perform addition relative to humans who don't need a ton of examples.
And when a user asks something, it will go through the read part so the AI "knows" what to do with it. Now all the magic happens at the creative thinking part. Because with my theory (haven't coded it yet, but in theory it should work.) it can actually generalize very, very well. The creative thinking part will use the info provided by the read part to acces the memory part and select the required information.
The memory stores only numbers. Numbers that setup neural networks. These numbers are important for retrieving the information stored in the memory. Thanks to my memory setup, the creative thinking part can link different NN with each other. For instance:
I = 7+8*2
The read part understands that it is an mathematical problem and thus passes the info to the creative thinking part. (The creative thinking part isn't always creative! I gave it this name because it has the ability to be creative but it also just gets the correct answer for for instance mathematical problems.) The creative thinking part will link order of operations with addition and multiplication and fires them in order. So thanks to order of operations it will know that it needs to do 8*2 first and then 7+16 = 23. This is an simple example of generalization. The concept is the same for other things. Like if we wanted to create an time machine, then it might link Physics, quantum physics, astrophysics with eachother (have no idea but that's what I think lol) Like blackholes cause time to slow down for you so yea it might link that with it and actually use that.
I have already created the memory part and the real-time learning system. It automatically overrides NN's in the memory with new information. Just like humans. And learns in real-time. I am saying NN's in the memory because all the memory stores is the values given by the learning phase when it succesfully learned to do something and never makes mistakes anymore. So weights, biases are stored and when it needs to be used, it will create an NN with the values to retrieve the answer. - The creative part sets up the NN with the values.
What I currently have works. The only thing that still needs to be coded is the creative part.
Now what I don't really get is, my approach (did not tell you everything) should in theory make the AI better but it is an fairly simple concept. If I told you, you would get an "ahhh" moment. Now ofcourse, the thing that actually makes my AI better than other current models is the creative part. The memory is very simple just like the learning phase. And without the creative part it is nothing. The memory I have and the learning phase just makes it to actually understand stuff. So this prevents it from delivering inaccurate information when it learned something.
The big difference right now between mine and others is that it doesn't respond based on patterns. Instead it bases it's responses on things it learned.
Now I understand that pattern recognition can indeed also make an AI very smart, but it will never actually really think and know what something is. Whereas in the creative part it does generate relevant or irrelevant thoughts but still accurate thoughts. And the memory is just basically stored knowledge which makes it know stuff. And right now that is probably the closest I will get to representing it to know stuff compared to humans.
Let me know your thoughts on this! I apologize for repeating some things if I did.

Understanding the Rollover
If you do not understand what a rollover requirement is then please take the time to read.
What is rollover?
Rollover, or playthrough, is the total monetary amount of bets (aka handle) you need to place in order to cash out your bonus along with any winnings attached to that bonus. When it comes to Rollover, your wins and losses donโ€™t matter, each qualifying bet contributes to handle, and the Rollover required.
Sportsbook Details:
Meeting Rollover in our Sportsbook is a tad different. For winning wagers weโ€™ll credit the lesser of the risk amount or win amount. If your bet loses, your risk amount contributes toward Rollover no matter what. However, bets graded 'No Action', a tie or Pushed bet, along with canceled or voided bets, do not contribute in any way to the playthrough requirements of a bonus.
Casino Details:
There are also some games in the Casino that contribute differently to your requirement.
For full bonus details, including the Playthrough Requirement for your bonus, click the drop-down menu or Bonus Description.
If the bonus youโ€™ve claimed is a Deposit Match, the requirement is a multiplier of the Bonus + The Deposit Amount:
Ex. Deposit $100 + $100 Bonus = $200 X Rollover Multiplier (Varies by Bonus)

2024.05.15 21:36 imnewhere010101 AITA if I report a police officer

I was delivering some food today, I passed a cop and proceeded into the subdivision. I delivered the food and got back into my car and the police officer pulled up behind me and turned on their lights. Total disclosure, I knew my registration was expired, so I figured that was the reason for the lights. I figured Iโ€™d get a ticket and Iโ€™d be on my way. (I paid it immediately after this by the way, I just kept forgetting ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ)
When he came to the car he asked me for my stuff (valid license and insurance, which I had) and asked me to get out of the car. Which I did. Iโ€™m a nervous person, so I was shaking.
He said, โ€œyou know your registration is expired?โ€ I said yes sir. He said, โ€œand you have a warrant?โ€ And I said no sir.
He told me to stand at the back of the car while he ran my stuffโ€ฆ I asked him what the warrant was and he said for AI (alcohol intoxication)โ€ฆ. I said no thatโ€™s not me, and he rolled his eyes.
I stood there terrified. And he came back with my stuff, no ticket and said I was free to go. He actually said to me to go buy a lotto ticket because today was my lucky day. The lady who has the warrant has the same full name as me and the birthday is just a few days off.
He acted like he was doing me a favor not giving me a ticket.
AITA for thinking this is so unprofessional? He shouldnโ€™t have said I had a warrant when he didnโ€™t know. I was so scared, even though I knew I did nothing.

How We Evaluate New AI Models for AI Dungeon
Many of you have reached out to ask if weโ€™ll be implementing the new models that OpenAI announced yesterday. To help answer that, we decided to share this blog post weโ€™ve been working on to explain our process of evaluating new AI models for AI Dungeon.
Since the early days of Large Language Models (LLMs), weโ€™ve worked hard to use the most advanced models in the world for AI Dungeon. Weโ€™ve seen incredible advances in the power of these models, especially in the past 6 months. Weโ€™d like to share more about how we think about AI Models at AI Dungeon, including the entire lifecycle of selection, evaluation, deployment, and retirement. This should answer some questions weโ€™ve seen in the community about the decisions we make and what you can expect from models in AI Dungeon in the future.

Large Language Models + AI Dungeon: A History Lesson

AI Dungeon was born when our founder, Nick Walton, saw the launch of OpenAIโ€™s GPT2 model and wondered if it could become a dynamic storyteller (just like in Dungeons and Dragons).
Spoiler: it worked! ๐ŸŽ‰
A hackathon prototype turned into an infinite AI-powered game unlike anything before. From the very first few days, the cost of running an AI-powered game became readily apparent. The first version of AI Dungeon cost $10,000/day to run (so much that the university hosting the first version had to shut it down after 3 days!). Thus began our constant quest to identify and implement affordable and capable AI models so that anyone could play AI Dungeon.
The first public version of AI Dungeon (in December 2019) was powered by GPT-2. Later, we switched to using GPT-3 through OpenAI (in 2020). While it was exciting to be using the state-of-the-art AI tech at that time, unlike today, there were essentially no other competitive AI models, commercial or open source. We couldnโ€™t just switch models if issues arose (and they certainly did). When you asked us for cheaper options or unlimited play, we didnโ€™t have the leverage to advocate for lower costs for you since there was no competition creating price pressure.
But that was all about to change. New open-source and commercial models entered the market, and we explored them as they became available. The open-source GPT-J (summer of 2021) and GPT-NeoX were promising, and AI21โ€™s Jurassic models (Fall of 2021) were explored over the next few years. Fast-forward to today, there are hundreds of models and model variants. AI Dungeon is uniquely positioned to leverage new advances in AI from various providers at scale.
Given the number of available models, picking which models to check out can be tricky. Evaluating and deploying models takes time. Here are some of the ways we think about this process:

Our Strategy for AI Models

Weโ€™ve made a few choices that impact how we handle AI model work in AI Dungeon. Together, these allow us to give you the best role-play experience we can.
  1. Model Agnostic. Weโ€™ve chosen to be model agnostic so you have access to the best models on the market and benefit from the billions of dollars currently being invested into better models by multiple companies. Youโ€™ve seen the fruit of this strategy lately with the launch of MythoMax, Tie Fighter, Mixtral 7x8B, GPT-4-Turbo, Llama 3 70B, and WizardLM 8x22B. [Read More]
  2. Vendor Agnostic. Weโ€™ve also chosen to be vendor agnostic so you benefit from the competition among current providers. The recent doubling in context length was possible because of this. [Read More]
  3. Operate Profitably. Given the scale of AI Dungeon, we could bankrupt the company very easily if we werenโ€™t careful. We spend a lot of time thinking about AI cost to ensure AI Dungeon will be around for a long time. Our goal is to give as much as possible to you without putting the future of AI Dungeon at risk.
  4. Iterate Quickly. Weโ€™ve designed our technology, team, and models around fast learning and iteration. The recent rise of instruction-based models means models can be quickly adapted to the AI Dungeon experience without needing to create (or wait for) a fine-tuned model suited for role-play adventures.
  5. Enable endless play. We want to offer models that allow you to play how you want. Outside of a few edge cases (such as sexual content involving minors and guidelines for publicly published content shared with our community), we want you to go on epic adventures, slay dragons, and explore worlds without constraint. Because of our model/vendor agnostic strategy, we have the flexibility to ensure we get to control the approach. [Read more about this strategy in our blog post about the Walls Approach].

How We Identify New Models to Evaluate

At first, we evaluated every model that launched. Early providers included OpenAI, Cohere, AI21, and Eleuther. Lately, we havenโ€™t been able to keep up with the rate of new models being launched. Hereโ€™s one visualization of just how the AI Model space has accelerated.
Cumulative count of repos by category over time. Source: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/stable-evolution-open-source-ai-michael-spencer-oefhc/
Weโ€™re selective about which models to evaluate. We base that decision on information we source from the AI community on X, LLM leaderboards, our technology partners, and members of our AI Dungeon community.
When a model piques our interest and seems like it could be worth exploring (when it could have a desirable combo of cost/latency/quality/etc), we do some light exploration around feasibility and desirability. If thereโ€™s a playground where we can test the model, weโ€™ll play around a bit ourselves to see what we think. We also talk to our current providers to see how/when they may offer a model at scale.
If everything seems positive, we move into our model evaluation process.

How We Evaluate AI Models

Once weโ€™ve identified a model we are interested in, then the real evaluation starts. Here are the steps we take to verify if a model is worth offering to you in AI Dungeon:
  1. Research. As mentioned in the selection process, we look to a number of sources, including industry benchmarks, leaderboards and discussion in the broader AI community, for indicators of which models are the most promising.
  2. Playground testing. Someone on our team experiments to confirm we think it could work with AI Dungeon.
  3. Finetuning (if required). GPT-J (which powers Griffin) and AI21 Mid (which powers Dragon) are examples of models that clearly needed fine-tuning to perform well for AI Dungeon. Newer models have been able to perform well without finetuning.
  4. Integrate the model into AI Dungeon and make sure it works. For example, we recently evaluated a model (Smaug) that seemed compelling on paper but wasnโ€™t able to generate coherent outputs due to its inability to handle the action/response format we use in AI Dungeon.
  5. Internal testing. Does the model behave as we expect it to with AI Dungeonโ€™s systems? For instance, when we first implemented ChatGPT, it became clear that weโ€™d need additional safety systems to minimize the impact of the modelโ€™s moralizing behavior.
  6. Alpha testing. Our community alpha testers help us find issues and give a qualitative sense of how good the model is. The models from Google didnโ€™t make it past our Alpha testers due to moralizing and lower quality writing than competing models.
  7. AI Comparison. Players who opt into the โ€œImprove the AIโ€ setting are occasionally presented with two AI outputs and asked to select the best one. These outputs are from two different models, and we compare how often one modelโ€™s responses are preferred over anotherโ€™s. To achieve statistical significance for the test, we collect a few thousand responses per AI Comparison.
  8. Experimental access. The final step is giving you all access to the new models in an experimental phase. We often make significant adjustments to how we handle models as a result of the feedback you share. In some cases, models may not be promoted past the experimental phase if players arenโ€™t finding value from them. For instance, weโ€™re considering whether to promote Llama 3 70B since players have reported it repeats frequently.
At any step of the process, we may decide to stop evaluation. Most models donโ€™t make it through our evaluation process to become an offered model on AI Dungeon.

How We Deploy Models

Once we commit to offering a model on AI Dungeon, we then figure out the best way to run it at scale. With private models we often can only run them with the creator of the model (like AI21โ€™s models). For open-source models, we can choose between running on rented hardware or using other providers that run LLMs as a service (which is our preference). By optimizing our model deployment costs weโ€™re able to deliver better AI to users for the same price.
We also have an alert system and series of dashboards that show us the number of requests, average context in and out, latency profiling (average request time, max request time), and estimated cost. This lets us keep our AI models running smoothly and quickly respond to any issues that come up.

How We Retire Models

Given the complexity of models, itโ€™s sometimes necessary to retire models that are no longer adding much value to the community. While it would be nice to offer every AI model perpetually, maintaining models takes time and development resources away from other improvements on AI Dungeon, including new AI models and systems.
Because of that, we need to balance the value a model provides against the cost of maintaining it (especially in developer time). Weโ€™re guessing most of you are no longer pining for the good old days of GPT-2 ๐Ÿ˜‰.
Before deciding to retire a model, we consider usage, tech advances (i.e., instruction-based models), latency, uptime, stability, error rates, costs, player feedback, and the general state of models in AI Dungeon (i.e., how many do we have for each tier).
Each model is unique, like an ice cream flavor. Taking away your favorite flavor can be frustrating, especially if that model does things that other models donโ€™t (like mid-sentence completion). We hope thereโ€™s solace in the fact that when models are retired, the recovered development resources are reinvested into better models and new features that make AI Dungeon a better experience for you.
Today hereโ€™s the % breakdown of model usage for various models:

Free Players

MythoMax 73%
TieFighter 17.8%
Mixtral 8.8%
Griffin 0.4%

Subscribers

Mixtral 79%
MythoMax 8%
WizardLM 8x22B 5%
TieFighter 4%
Llama 3 70B 2%
Dragon 1%
GPT-4-Turbo 0.5%
ChatGPT 0.4%
Griffin 0.01%
Youโ€™ll notice a few things. MythoMax is our most popular model, even capturing some use from paid players who have access to all the models. Mixtral is the clear favorite for premium players.
Because of the advances in tech as well as low usage, we will be retiring Griffin, Dragon, and ChatGPT models on May 31st, 2024. Griffin, while itโ€™s served us well, has exceptionally low usage, the worst uptime of all our models, and a high rate of errors. It requires more developer maintenance than all other models we offer. Dragon and ChatGPT also have lower usage now. Retiring models enables us to focus on other product work including additional model improvements, bug fixing, and building new features.
GPT-4-Turbo is somewhat of an outlier. Despite its moralizing, itโ€™s one of the best story writing models available. Players who use it love it! While its usage rate is low relative to other models, itโ€™s actually well represented for a model only available to Legend and Mythic tiers, though itโ€™s clear players still favor Llama 3 70B and WizardLM 8x22B. We are evaluating the recently announced GPT-4o as a potential replacement for GPT-4 Turbo which could mean offering higher context lengths. Although venture-funded OpenAI says theyโ€™ll offer limited use of GPT-4o for free through their own ChatGPT client, it will not be a free model for API users (like AI Dungeon), so it will still be a premium model for us. First, though, it needs to pass the evaluations weโ€™ve outlined above.

Moving Forward

This was a deeper peek into our approach to models than weโ€™ve ever given. We hope itโ€™s clear that we spend a lot of time thinking about which models we can offer to you and how to provide them best.
Thank you to all who have given feedback on our AI models. We will continue to communicate as much as we can about models and planned model improvements. Itโ€™s exciting to realize AI will only get better from here. The past few months have shown us just how fast things can change. And weโ€™re excited to explore with you how much better role play can be as AI keeps improving.

Pretext:

The recent re-invasion of the Northern Kharkiv oblast and some word of mouth have spurred renewed interest in my own reevaluation of the frontline in Ukraine, Specifically mapping its lines of defense and how it has prepared its defenses.
These areas included:
- North Eastern Sumy
- Northern Kharkiv
- West & South Western Donetsk
- Southern Zaporizhzhia
-A very brief look at the cities of Kherson and Odessa.

Introduction:

Whether you give a shit or not there are undeniable truths to the narrative that Kharkiv is severely lacking defensive infrastructure compared to other areas of the frontline - so much so that I'm positive that any serious pivot from Russia would pose a critical threat to Kharkiv, so much so that it is possibly the most vulnerable front line in all of Ukraine.

Chapter 1 - Youโ€™re Not A Snake And Iโ€™m Not An Ocelot. Weโ€™re Men, With Names

Commercial satellite imaging is fucking expensive, but also isn't entirely necessary for a generalized picture of the situation. Unfortunately this isn't a lesson of how to identify defensive structures in blurry images, but it really isn't that difficult to get the picture with some effort. Even with low resolution.
YOU WILL NEVER GET EVERYTHING AND SOME THINGS WILL ACTUALLY BE NOTHING, WHILE NOTHING COULD BE SOMETHING. LOW RESOLUTION IS LOW RELIABILITY.
With this in mind ill present you with the following.

Chapter 2 - Itโ€™s easy to forget what a sin is in the middle of a battlefield

Someone fucked up here, either intentionally through massive corruption or through complacency. Either way it has left some massiveholes in the defense of the Northern approach to Kharkiv that i will call the Lyptsi - Rubizhne Gap.
So lets put our NGA (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) hats on and look at some basic free SAT imaging from the Sentinel 2 Satellite and explore a few SAT images of some of the areas i mentioned before.
\Approximate geolocation will also in bottom right of each image*
Examples of some of the Defensive belts in Southern Zaporizhzhia:

47ยฐ40'48.0\"N 35ยฐ31'48.0\"E - !0th May 2024

White boxes = Trench Systems Yellow Line = Likely anti-tank ditch

47ยฐ35'28.7\"N 35ยฐ51'36.4\"E - 10th May 2024

White boxes = Trench Systems Yellow Line = Likely anti-tank ditch

Examples in West & Southwestern Donetsk:
48ยฐ12'17.6\"N 37ยฐ25'21.8\"E - 07th May 2024

White boxes = Trench Systems Yellow Line = Likely anti-tank ditch

48ยฐ16'21.8\"N 37ยฐ30'14.5\"E - 07th May 2024

White boxes = Trench Systems Yellow Line = Likely anti-tank ditch

48.424757, 37.603001 - 07th May 2024

White boxes = Trench Systems Yellow Line = Likely anti-tank ditch

These are all examples of first and or secondary defensive lines that include defensive ditches and entrenched positions for infantry, armor and artillery in both the south and east of the active Ukrainian theatres.
Lets now compare the images of these defensive positions with those in the Northern Kharkiv region in the " Lyptsi - Rubizhne Gap".
50.181272, 36.515498 - 10th May 2024

White boxes = Trench Systems

50.228667, 36.440525 - 10th May 2024

White boxes = Trench Systems

50.159213, 36.633043 - 10th May 2024

White boxes = Trench Systems

Yet just to the East and West of the Lyptsi - Rubizhne Gap we have these types of fortifications

50.177365, 36.954718 - 10th May 2024 (East of gap)

White boxes = Trench Systems Yellow= anti-tank ditches & Dragons Teeth

50.157957, 36.194172 - 10th May 2024 (West of Gap)

White boxes = Trench Systems

Chapter 3 - He who controls the battlefield, controls history.

To reiterate, these are just low Res SAT images, but with the right understanding of what you are looking at and acknowledging that one can only see a certain piece of the puzzle from such a blurry angle, it still end up looking like there is a distinct lack of visible fortifications along the northern approach to kharkiv from Lyptsi. Especially given its the second largest city in Ukraine.

Conclusion - I don't know, im tired, make up your own mind.

Just my two cents on what ive been able to see. I honestly don't even know if this is relevant to the subreddit but i feel like it can be engaged with here on a level above "this either does or doesn't agree with me and that's all i have to say" type shit.

2024.05.15 21:30 regazp Stackpointer business search engine for lead gen

Hi! Today, I'm super excited to introduce a service designed to help business owners to find clients, competitors, and new opportunities.
It's called Stackpointer - a business search engine, with an AI twist: https://stackpointer.ai
It allows you to search for businesses in plain English, including searches based on their tech stack. It provides details like business information, location, social media links and tech stack. Great for lead generation, as we offer the option to export search results.
After working for the tech industry for many years, about 6 months ago I decided to start my own business. While researching business ideas I needed a way to quickly see what's out there, what already existed. There are several business search engines out there but I found them either too expensive or somewhat clunky. I was particularly interested in filtering businesses based on their tech stack. I could use BuiltWith, their stack analysis is really good but I did find their business categorization to be inconsistent, their prices too big and their font too small :)
So I decided to start my own search engine. I created my own indexing engine that browses business' websites and indexes their information and tech stack. Stackpointer does not index random websites, we focus exclusively on verified businesses.
On top of this I added simple, ChatGPT-like search. So users can run very cool queries like:
or even better, tech-specific searches:
Additionally, I use real traffic information to rank all those businesses (Top 1k, 5k, 10k etc... most visited).
Searching is available for free upon signing up, with limited results. Subscription plans offer more results and the ability to export.
I'd love to hear people's feedback (quite nervous as a first time business owner!).

2024.05.15 21:28 boathouse_floats Unlocking the Power of Memes - Escape the Matrix - Join the Revolution

In the world of investing, meme stocks have taken center stage, captivating the attention of both seasoned traders and newcomers alike. Names like GameStop (GME) and AMC Entertainment (AMC) have become synonymous with the meme stock movement, characterized by volatile price swings driven by social media hype and retail investor frenzy.
But amidst the chaos and excitement of meme stocks, there's another player quietly making waves: Kendu. While GME and AMC may offer short-term pumps fueled by speculative trading, Kendu represents something differentโ€”a long-term opportunity for sustainable growth and wealth creation.
The Meme Game: GME and AMC
GameStop and AMC have become iconic symbols of the meme stock revolution, fueled by Reddit forums like WallStreetBets and viral social media campaigns. Investors flock to these stocks in search of quick pumps and adrenaline-fueled trades, hoping to capitalize on the next big squeeze or short squeeze.
However, the volatile nature of meme stocks means that gains can be fleeting, and losses can be steep. While some traders have struck it rich with well-timed trades, many others have been left holding the bag as prices plummet back to earth.
Kendu: A Different Kind of Meme
Enter Kendu, the underdog of the meme project world. Unlike GME and AMC, Kendu offers more than just short-term speculationโ€”it represents a vision for long-term growth and community-driven success.
With the support of renowned figures like Shytoshi Kusama and a rapidly growing community of dedicated supporters, Kendu is poised to disrupt the meme project landscape. Unlike other projects that rely on paid influencers and artificial hype, Kendu's growth has been organic, driven by genuine enthusiasm and belief in the project's potential.
The Power of Community: Kendu's Secret Weapon
What sets Kendu apart from its meme stock counterparts is its focus on building a strong and united community. While GME and AMC may rely on fleeting social media trends and hype, Kendu's community is in it for the long haul, united by a shared vision of financial freedom and empowerment.
With exponential growth across all social media platforms and no signs of slowing down, Kendu is proving to be the people's projectโ€”a grassroots movement that has the potential to change lives and redefine the way we think about investing

Our Chance to Break Free: Kendu as the Path to Financial Freedom
For many investors, Kendu represents more than just a cryptocurrencyโ€”it's a chance to break free from the constraints of the traditional financial system and achieve true financial independence. With its promise of exponential growth and a guaranteed return, Kendu offers a safe haven in an uncertain world, providing investors with the opportunity to escape the matrix of 9-5 jobs and embrace a future of limitless possibilities.
While GME and AMC may offer short-term excitement and adrenaline-fueled trades, Kendu represents something greaterโ€”a chance to build wealth, empower communities, and rewrite the rules of finance. With the support of its dedicated community and influential backers like Shytoshi Kusama, Kendu is poised to soar to new heights and pave the way for a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

2024.05.15 21:26 theconstellinguist Envy Studies Includes Jealousy Studies: Pathological Jealousy from a Forensic Psychiatric Perspective

Pathological Jealousy from a Forensic Psychiatric Perspective
https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/advances-in-psychiatric-treatment/article/aspects-of-morbid-jealousy/06CBB7BF78CC43C785AE6F7C0F0046C9
The fear of loss and hyperfocus on the fear of loss seems to be behind a lot of the behavior to do with jealousy.
"The threat of losing a partner is expressed cognitively, emotionally and behaviorally. At the beginning the dominant component is emotional, related to a threat of a personal loss (of a partner, relationship, plans, life, stability), negative attitude towards a rival, as well as a partner, the feeling of injustice and loneliness."
Anger at the fear of loss begins to emerge.
"According to Zywucka-Kozlowska and Wlodarcyzk, jealousy is an anger, occurring on certain circumstances, based on two elements; emotions and situations. Emotions arise from the construction of human psyche, while situation arises from conditionings of the external world. Jealousy understood as an emotion is based on the insecurity towards own self-worthiness as a person as well as own attractiveness (including sexual attractiveness) for the partner."
The anger motivates the aggression to mitigate the risk of fear of loss
"Change in a way of perceiving a threat of losing a valued partnership (hypothesis, suspicion, interpretation) in favor of a real or imaginary rival who would enter an emotional relationship with a partner. It is accompanied by a mixture of various interpretations of the partner's behaviors as well as those of the rival, which generate anxiety and incline a jealous person to search for evidence of infidelity or to actions aiming at prevention of potential infidelity. The jealous person accumulates sorrow, anger, hatred, bitterness, which can epitomize in accusations towards an erotic partner."
Feelings of inefficiency and inability to satisfy cause a sense of fundamental insufficiency that begins the anger that evokes jealousy
"Factors often listed as contributing to evoking jealousy in men are as follows: erectile dysfunction, a feeling of inability to satisfy a partner's sexual desires, decrease of women's sexual drive, differences in attractiveness of partners, experience of an actual infidelity in the past, feeling of inefficiency to fulfill social roles, or psychopathological disorders expressed by alcohol abuse, personality disorders and delusional syndrome."
Putting the cart before the horse of accusations freaking out the accuser is seen, causing more anxiety as there is no good way to respond to an irrational delusion.
"Simultaneously, suspicion and distrust towards the partner and other people grow, then imaginary accusations and convictions appear. Consequently, these convictions intensify the fear, fury and further anxiety which additionally increases the amount of false judgements."
They also show inability to control jealous thoughts
"Infidelity, however, are not able to suppress the key psychic aspect of their jealousy, namely intrusive thoughts about infidelity, which they cannot control. Jealousy in its overvalued idea takes on a form of a dominant thought, however, a jealous person does not have assumptions of the intensity of delusions."
This shows jealous behavior is linked to obsessive compulsive disorder, which is linked to fear of loss. Only its aggressive instantiation is linked to jealous behavior though.
Anger at the fear of loss increases stress which makes the brain's delusions more aggressive as happens whenever the brain is infused with excess cortisol.
"It is necessary for a person to display anxiety, fear of losing a partner or his or her position in the partnership, which should evoke stress and interfere with function of the jealous person, both people, or partnership."
Invasion of private areas of an individual's processing is a key signs of jealousy, as is the aggressive imposition of humiliating the partner to "get back" for their delusions where they were humiliated which never occurred
"Typical behaviors accompanying delusional jealousy include: multiple accusations about infidelity without sufficient evidence, demands for assertions or imposing of pledging faithfulness, humiliating and controlling partner's behaviors as well as demanding information concerning thoughts, views, and fantasies."
Overvaluation of the delusional idea also includes overreading of the facial expression for "signs" of confirmation. Hyperfixation on sentiment analysis may belie a deeper delusion behind the person hyperfixated.
"The so-called delusional activity comes down to realizing powerfully expressed need of control in form of various ways of manipulating, deceiving, searching for personal belongings, listening in telephone calls, and controlling correspondences. Emotions present at that time such as anger, sorrow, pain humiliation, fear and contradicting desired lead to increasing search for eventual evidence of infidelity, which could not be found, which in turn make neutral behavior acquire characteristics of these evidences."
Insatiability is seen on the jealous, showing extremes of violation to satisfy a delusional possessiveness, all the more disturbing when there is no actual partnership. The insatiability belies the psychotic instantiation
"A greater integrity of partnership, however, this lasts only a certain time. Usually, there comes a moment when a partner is not able to fulfill the expectations of a jealous person because it is infeasible. Attempts at leaving the above described constellation by one of the partners turn into an embers of anxiety, fear and evoke suspicion of disloyalty, to the pathological extent."
Schizophrenia, depression, substance use and OCD are all seen on those with pathological jealousy.
"On the other hand, Singh et al. indicated that the most common diagnoses related to morbid jealousy were schizophrenia (34%), depression (30%) and substance abuse (20%) jealousy with morbid intensity occurred also in bipolar affective disorder (6%) and other mental disorders. 10%-obsessive-compulsive disorder."
Expectation of reward and aggressive dopamine shunting as an irregularity were seen in these brains, linking jealousy to envy circuitry.
In confirmation of this, jealousy showed signs of behaving just like an addiction, trying to get a higher hit. Addiction is not logic, it creates rationalization.
"In respect to women, intensity of jealousy negatively correlated with the length of a relationship, and positively with the intensifying symptoms of an addiction."
False reception of various actions are treated as real, and memories are reinterpreted (and thus reconstructed) as pathological, leading to a strong emotional charge. Basically, reading neutral information wrong as often seen on the jealous leads to the anger that leads to fear of loss, and the stress that creates delusion.
"In delusional disorders focusing on a partner's infidelity, jealous people treat their false reception of various actions as real and intensify it by pathological interpretation of memories which are in turn strengthened by strong emotional charge. By doing this, quasi-logical systems of jealousy are created. They constantly accuse a partner of infidelity and stubbornly attempt to validate their suspicions by delusional activity. Sometimes, "interrogations" can take a form of tortures, and inspections are not limited to checking possessions, but also involve partner himself (including genitalia)."
Delusions of humiliation seem to be psychotic expressions of fear of loss, the fear of having lost while acting like one has not.
"It seems that in the case of people with increased levels of jealousy, situations when they feel moral pain associated with a false conviction that the environment knows about a partner's infidelity, can be especially painful. Situations n which they feel threatened, associate with a possibility of infidelity, disloyalty, embarrassment or humiliation (imaginary or real) weaken their self-control. Most often, there is a chronic situation of mental burden and increasingly growing tension."
Highly suspicious hostility leads to anxiety and negative attitudes towards other people.
"They are highly suspicious, which is expressed by hostility towards the environment, caution towards people, which leads to experiencing anxiety and negative attitudes towards other people."
Emotional-delusional explains a lot of the general type of rationalization, denial, and cart before the horse thinking seen on the jealous person.
"Przybylek at al.[30] drew similar conclusions and stated that in the group of emotional-delusional murderers there are perpetrators who, apart from delusional aspect, are motivated by revenge, feeling of injustice or feelings of insecurity and fear, which additionally weakens their ability to control their actions while committing a crime."
People with delusional jealousy often struggle to see their own jealousy or envy, showing again the denial element of the psychotic behavior witnessed. Lowered level of sense of illness (not admitting they have a problem) is a well known sign of an extremely high risk person for committing violence.
"Usually crimes motivated by jealousy are associated with a chronic psychotic process which is concentrated on a partner, a suspected rival, or other people who 'assist' infidelity. People with delusional jealousy have also a very low level of criticism towards own convictions. A lowered level of illness insight is a well-known factor of aggression risk, which should cause expert witnesses to balanced assessment in terms of the necessity of using security measures."

2024.05.15 21:18 Aldous_Szasz [right libertarians/ancaps]

The foremost claim that (so called) libertarians make for their model of society is that it respects and promotes individual liberty, and allows people to pursue their own lives, in their own way, without the interference of others. Further they argue that other non-libertarian political ideologies, and personal beliefs, can be accommodated. Those who wish to be socialist, in a libertarian society, can band together, buy a parcel of land to live on and then set up a socialist society there, free from the interference of others. Likewise for religious groups and people with other beliefs.
Libertarians claim that the only economic order that respects individual freedom, is the free market. To them the free market is an exemplar of freedom in action. At the heart of the free market, is the voluntary bilateral exchange. If two parties exchange some goods, voluntarily, or make some contract voluntarily, then so long as this does not involve the violation of another's rights, no one has the right to interfere in it. According to libertarians the free market is the sum of the voluntary exchanges, and contracts going on in a society, nothing more and nothing less. Any distribution that occurs in the operation of a free market, is therefore just since at no stage has anyone's rights been violated, and all the exchanges were voluntary.
It seems to me that the above view ignores an important fact. The people involved in a free market must accept the rules of its operation, namely the rules that forbid attacks on others, using another's property without their consent, trespass, and fraud. This means that the free market has to include the mechanisms for deterring crimes, and mechanisms for compensation and punishment should such crimes be committed. The amount of coercion required to prevent such crimes, depends on the level of acquiescence of the population to the free market rules. In other words, the market is in fact the exchanges that go on as mentioned above, plus the policing, arbitration and legislating mechanisms required to ensure its operation. Hence, like the state, the market is a social institution, and the distributions of goods that result from its operation are therefore the distributions sanctioned by a libertarian society.
Libertarians are unanimous in viewing coercion as a violation of liberty, thus if you are forced to give money to the government to provide welfare, then you are being coerced and your liberty violated. The only legitimate use of coercion, according to libertarians is in enforcing people's rights. Libertarians legitimise coercion in these circumstances, and the amount of coercion required to enforce these rights depends on how willing people are to respect them. Hence it cannot be the case that a free market is free from coercion, unless everyone voluntarily respects these rights and abides by the law. For a libertarian to claim that a libertarian society is totally free in this sense, and justify it by saying that they expect everyone to respect property rights in this way, is on a par with a socialist claiming that a socialist society is free from coercion, because they expect everyone to be willing to accept the socialist's laws. Arguing that the free market they depict is an ideal that is free of coercion, but the practice requires some coercion to prevent people from violating rights, doesn't help either - the socialist can argue the equivalent point in defence of their position! A libertarian may concede that coercion is required to protect rights, but that other than that, the free market is free of coercion, and will be freer of coercion than a non-libertarian society.
However, as I said before, the amount of coercion required depends on how willing the citizens are to accept a free market order. If the citizens of a society do not want a libertarian order, it may require a lot of coercion to impose it, likewise if the citizens want socialism it won't require as much coercion to get it. In other words, what determines the amount of coercion required in a society, is the extent to which people are willing to accept the rules imposed on them, and this is as true of a libertarian, society as it is of any other. Thus, it is debatable that a libertarian society would have less coercion in it than a non-libertarian one. The libertarian can argue that at least the use of coercion is legitimised only in explicit circumstances where rights have been violated, but then a non-libertarian could argue the same for their proposed model of society too.
You will notice that I have supposed that to prevent someone from doing something he wants to do is to make him, in that respect, unfree; I am pro tanto unfree whenever someone interferes with my actions, whether or not I have a right to perform them, and whether or not my obstructor has a right to interfere with me. But there is a definition of freedom which informs much libertarian writing and which entails that interference is not a sufficient condition of unfreedom. On that definition, which may be called the rights definition of freedom, I am unfree only when someone prevents me from doing what I have a right to do, so that he, consequently, has no right to prevent me from doing it. Thus Robert Nozick says: โ€œOther peopleโ€™s actions place limits on oneโ€™s available opportunities. Whether this makes oneโ€™s resulting action non-voluntary depends upon whether these others had the right to act as they did.โ€ Now, if one combines this rights definition of freedom with a moral endorsement of private property, with a claim that, in standard cases, people have a moral right to the property they legally own, then one reaches the result that the protection of legitimate private property cannot restrict anyoneโ€™s freedom. It will follow from the moral endorsement of private property that you and the police are justified in preventing me from pitching my tent on your land, and, because of the rights definition of freedom, it will then further follow that you and the police do not thereby restrict my freedom. So here we have a further explanation of how intelligent philosophers are able to say what they do about capitalism, private property, and freedom. But the characterization of freedom which figures in the explanation is unacceptable. For it entails that a properly convicted murderer is not rendered unfree when he is justifiably imprisoned.
Even justified interference reduces freedom. But suppose for a moment that, as libertarians say or imply, it does not. On that supposition one cannot argue, without further ado, that interference with private property is wrong because it reduces freedom. For one can no longer take it for granted, what is evident on a normatively neutral account of freedom, that interference with private property does reduce freedom. On a rights account of what freedom is one must abstain from that assertion until one has shown that people have moral rights to their private property. Yet libertarians tend both to use a rights definition of freedom and to take it for granted that interference with his private property diminishes the ownerโ€™s freedom. But they can take that for granted only on the normatively neutral account of freedom, on which, however, it is equally obvious that the protection of private property diminishes the freedom of nonowners, to avoid which consequence they adopt a rights definition of the concept. And so they go, back and forth, between inconsistent definitions of freedom, not because they cannot make up their minds which one they like better, but under the propulsion of their desire to occupy what is in fact an untenable position. Libertarians want to say that interferences with peopleโ€™s use of their private property are unacceptable because they are, quite obviously, abridgments of freedom, and that the reason why protection of private property does not similarly abridge the freedom of nonowners is that owners have a right to exclude others from their property and nonowners consequently have no right to use it. But they can say all that only if they define freedom in two inconsistent ways.
The justification of property rights on the grounds of the (moralised) freedom of the property owner is circular. This is so because the truth of the proposition that Pโ€™s freedom to use X is violated, on this account, depends on X being Pโ€™s property. So P's ownership of X cannot be based on the fact that Pโ€™s freedom is violated. For example, suppose 1 have a justified (property) right to the chair I am sitting on. If you take the chair away from me then you violate that right and, therefore, also reduce my (moralised) freedom. But if you were to inquire as to the justification of my right to the chair I could not point to the reduced freedom of not respecting that right since whether or not my freedom is reduced, on this account, depends on whether or not I have a (justified) right to the chair.
In fact there are two independent circular arguments involved in such an account of the relation between property rights and freedom. The first concerns the justification of the extent of the right (justifying property), the second concerns the distributional question (drawing the boundaries). Does respect of my freedom require a recognition of my right to sit on the chair? To move it from one place to another? To allow others to use it? To transfer my right to another? and so on. That depends on whether my freedom is violated when I am prevented from doing any of the specified actions. But whether my freedom is violated depends on whether or not I have the specified rights. So the issue of how far my right to the chair extends โ€” control, income, transfer, and so on - cannot be settled by reference to my freedom to do any of those things since that freedom itself depends on the extent to which I have that right. That is the first circular argument aiming to justify my property (rather than any lesser) right on a moralised notion of freedom.
Does respect of my freedom require the recognition of my exclusive right to sit on the chair? Why does respect for my freedom impose such a requirement, but respect for your freedom or anyone elseโ€™s does not? In other words, why is my freedom violated when I am prevented from using the chair and your freedom is not when you are prevented from using it? Whether or not our respective freedoms are violated depends on whether you or I have such a right. So the issue of who has the right to the chair - I rather than you - cannot be settled by reference to my freedom to do any of those things since that freedom itself (and your lack of freedom or unfreedom) depends on the fact that I, rather than you, have that right. That is the second circular argument aiming to justify my (rather than anyone elseโ€™s) property right on a moralised notion of freedom.
