With the fighter now getting Tactical Mind at level 2, able to convert Second Wind uses into ability check boosts, this presents an open question: is the fighter now more effective in out-of-combat ability checks at early levels than the rogue, the classic skill monkey class? And what about the barbarian's Primal Knowledge, and the guidance cantrip?

Tactical Mind

The rogue, relative to the fighter, has Expertise in two skills over proficiency, which starts at +2, and two additional skill proficiencies (four instead of two) and one tool proficiency (Thieves' Tools), also +2. The fighter's Tactical Mind works on any ability check that can be failed (so excludes initiative, but includes non-skill checks) and adds 1d10, with the use only consumed if this pushes the check from a failure to a success.
To start, let's assume that we're only dealing with a skill that the rogue has a relative +2 advantage in. We'll compare a rogue with +3 Dex and Expertise in stealth (total +7) to a fighter with +3 Dex and only proficiency (total +5), and the DC will be 15. The rogue has a simple 65% chance of success. The fighter has a 55% chance of succeeding baseline, but on a failure can expend Second Wind to add 1d10. This brings their overall success rate to 82%, but there's an overall 27% chance that the fighter expends one use of Second Wind, so this bonus only works for an estimated 3.7 ability checks per use.
If the fighter only budgets a single use of Second Wind to this (as they now have exactly one extra use compared to 2014, with some marginal exceptions), then they have an 82% chance of success for 3.7 checks and 55% chance of success for the remaining checks. Out-of-combat stealthing is a different story, but involves far fewer checks.)
However, that was with the fighter using Tactical Wind at the bare minimum. If they allocate both Second Wind uses to Tactical Mind, then they have an 82% chance of success for an estimated 7.4 checks, and an overall 75% success rate across ten checks, and it takes twenty checks to drop to 65%. If we account for two short rests each restoring one Second Wind use, then we sustain the 82% success rate for 14.8 checks, and don't drop to an overall 65% success rate until forty checks, all within the five checks the rogue favors, which enters the realm of absurdity and extreme outliers.
At this point, you may object that the fighter can't allocate all of their Second Wind uses to ability checks, they should save some for healing except for on the occasional adventuring day with relatively little fighting. However, it's not like the fighter is especially fragile without Second Wind for healing, they'd still be more durable than the rogue overall. The fighter can choose between having superior skills over the rogue or having more healing, while the rogue cannot choose to convert their skill prowess into healing. Tactical Mind by all indications cost absolutely nothing from the fighter's power budget; in fact, the fighter only got stronger between UA5 and UA7 in Tier 1 by getting a Second Wind use on a short rest again. The rogue's Sneak Attack is roughly equivalent in combat boost to the fighter's martial weapons + Fighting Style.
Overall, I conclude that in Tier 1, levels 2-4, the fighter is plainly better than the rogue at ability checks even when only making the ability checks the rogue specialized in relative to the fighter, and far superior in the remaining ability checks. At level 5, this shifts only slightly. If we increase the DC to 17, the rogue now has a 70% success rate with Expertise, while the fighter's rate is unchanged. It now takes between six and seven checks for the fighter to drop to the rogue's success rate, per Second Wind use, but the fighter now has a base of three Second Winds (which actually increased at level 4, boosting the fighter before the rogue), so if they just expend the two extra compared to 2014, that's roughly thirteen checks, and if they use all five, roughly thirty-two.
It isn't until level 7 that the rogue can claim the skill champion title with Reliable Talent, assuming they chose frequently-used skills with DCs that they can always pass with a 10, though if the DC is too high for Reliable Talent, Tactical Mind still has the edge over Expertise.

Comparison to the barbarian is considerably more complicated. At level 3, the barbarian gets Primal Knowledge, converting five skill checks into Strength while raging. In addition to inherent advantage, this also gives a flat bonus from using a higher skill, which varies considerably depending on the barbarian's stat allocation. The usefulness also depends on the power of these five specific skills, with Stealth and Perception generally considered very powerful and the others less so.
For simplicity, let's start by taking a barbarian with +3 Str, +2 Dex, and Stealth proficiency, and comparing them to a rogue with +3 Dex and Expertise. The rogue still has a 65% chance of success. The barbarian normally has 50% with a +4 bonus, but while raging they have a +5 bonus and advantage, for a 79.75% chance of success. This means that the barbarian is tied with the rogue if they are able to make their stealth checks while raging 50% of the time. At this level, they have three rages, and restore one per short rest for an estimated five, so maybe 50% is a reasonable estimate. (Unlike the fighter, I don't think the barbarian can afford to use Rage just for skill checks, as they dedicate far more of their power budget to Rage than the fighter dedicates to Second Wind.) These particular numbers fall by the wayside if the barbarian is wearing scale mail or half plate due to the inherent disadvantage, but not if they wear breastplate, though negating the disadvantage due to Rage is still a neat trick. They also don't account for any other potential sources of advantage that make the Rage advantage redundant.
We can also compare how they would do with Perception, widely considered a top-tier skill. The barbarian is more MAD than the rogue, so let's suppose the barbarian has +0 Wis and proficiency, while the rogue has +1 and took Expertise. Against DC15, the rogue has a 55% chance of success. The barbarian has a 40% chance normally, but raging takes this to again 79.75%. Now the barbarian is tied with the rogue if they are raging during 30% of their Perception checks, which may instead be on the low side.

Guidance

And then there's guidance, one of the most spammed cantrips in the game, now a reaction for even more convenience. While I wouldn't generally factor in spells like enhance ability for ability check comparisons as they eat up so much of the class's power budget, guidance is cheap to learn and free to cast. It adds an average +2.5 to a failed ability check, of any kind, which makes it inherently superior to the rogue's Expertise until level 5 and likely still better overall far beyond that. The only limitation is the reaction cost and the casting components, which may sometimes not be appropriate for the situation.
The good news is that it's possible to cast guidance on the rogue, but that still means that the caster is contributing more overall to the skill check than the rogue's inherent rogue-ness is. The rogue could also learn guidance via Magic Initiate, but that's a considerable ask when there are many other feats the rogue may be interested in, including Lucky, Alert, and even Magic Initiate but for the blade cantrips instead.

It seems strange to say, but until Reliable Talent kicks in and Expertise really kicks into gear with higher proficiency bonuses, rogues aren't that much better at ability checks than other classes, and now that some of these classes got ability check boosts, they spend a considerable amount of time as inferior skill monkeys. Maybe they need a flat bonus to all ability checks. Maybe they need a resource that they can spend on ability checks, which in a reverse from Second Wind can later be used in combat to fuel Cunning Strikes instead of costing d6s, borrowing from the now-to-be-redesigned Soulknife subclass. Many things can work, and I'd much sooner buff the rogue than remove these features from other classes, but I don't think the current state of the rogue puts it in a good spot for its skill check reputation.

“Me neither, chief. But take it easy!” Exar assured him, “There’s an easy fix for that. Just hike me up someplace with better reception. Any place where we can get above all these damn trees is good.”
“I’m afraid that’s not exactly an option, noble Exar.”

The moons! Rene was giddy at the prospect of becoming the first man to have returned to mankind’s celestial origin. He tried not to get his hopes too high, however, knowing life’s avowed fondness for ruining every dream a man ever had.
Failing that, Exar would use the high vantage point to triangulate their position using nearby geographic landmarks. Once they had their bearings, it would be a simple matter of hiking over to the nearest hardened base and knocking on the airlock doors.
“I must say, you’re taking all this bad news remarkably in stride, wise Exar,” he told the beeping sphere.
“Oh, puh-leeze! This ain’t my first rodeo, pardner. We E.X.A.R. units have dealt with far worse in our time.”
“Really? Worse than Arachnea?”
“Oh, is that what the kids are calling this place these days? Sure is catchier than 65 Syngman Bb, lemme tell ya. But yeah, this here is nuthin.”
Exar chuckled, a child amused by the backwardness of his senile grandparents.
“Alien plague strains from the thawed-out heart of an asteroid. Cosmophage armadas unleashed by rogue A.I. Not to mention all those privateer raids on the fringes of Pact space. We’ve dealt with them all, helped people survive through the worst the galaxy can throw at them. And with 95% success rate, too, if I may add,” Exar said somewhat immodestly, “Anywho, that’s enough of me jawing. Let’s go mobile, chief.”
“What, right now?”
“The mist’s our best shot, bo-sing. Natural concealment. No telling how long it’ll last.”
Before they left, Rene had Exar explain the functions of all the tools in the kit. The sphere confirmed what Rene had suspected: the slate fed on the radiance of the suns. Exar called it a ‘solar cell panel’. In turn, the pronged cords attached to the solar cell could transfer energy to artefact he wanted to use.
He connected the panel to the mysterious gauntlet with the underslung pipe, which Exar informed him was a ‘laser designator’, a tool meant for guiding in airdropped supplies or flying machines.
“It also doubles as a heat source. Just up the wattage on that sucker with the slide wheel on the edge of the hand. See it?”
Rene put on the gauntlet and activated it by means of a green switch under the thumb. A tight needle of red light shone from the tube, and Rene understood that it was basically like the electrochemical torches that miners used. When he adjusted the slide wheel the needle of light narrowed and grew brighter. Where it touched the granite walls of the burrow there, sour-smelling wisps of smoke rose.
Hot enough to scorch stone? He would have to be careful where he pointed this.
“Go easy on it, though,” Exar advised him, “That kinda power output will drain the juice in a jiffy.”
“The juice?” Rene repeated stupidly.
Exar made it clear to him that the artefacts could store ‘the juice’ from the panel. Moreover, the panel could be mounted on the front or the back of the jumpsuit by means of the same backpack rigging that held the breathing apparatus, allowing the user to collect the juice and charge up to two devices (Exar included) even while on the move. Even the bulky survival kit could be could be fastened to his loadout with a set of clasps at the bottom of the pack which Rene hadn’t noticed.
“As for me, I can hitch a ride on your backpack as well,” Exar told him brightly. And indeed, there was a spherical indentation above the breathing apparatus where Exar could fasten himself in with his stubby spike legs.
Rene whistled appreciatively at the compact nature of the jumpsuit’s design; the entire survival kit was so cleverly put together, a testament to the ancestor-gods’ practical mindset.
He secured his gear, choosing to split the juices between Exar and the gauntlet, and got ready to leave. Rene crouched at the hatch of the burrow like a man in a trench waiting for the shrill whistle that would propel him up and over into the desolate no-man’s land.
Then he noticed Zildiz still huddled in place, not even daring to look at him or the talking sphere. Rene had originally been grateful that Exar’s appearance had shut her up, but this state of catatonic shock of hers worried him.
“Coming?” he asked her.
“I’m not going anywhere with that…that thing!” she stated categorically.
“Was it something I said?” Exar sounded hurt.
“The simulacrum said it would cut me out of my exomorph. That would kill me, Fleet-man.”
“Madame, I got no intention of hurting you!” Exar protested, “But the fact is, you’re sick. The parasite’s attached to so many of the organs in your body, that I fear that it’s totally coopted their functions. Our people have the technology to reverse all that.”
“I will not heed the promises of a slaved intelligence!” she snapped.
Their argument was interrupted by a chorus of hair-raising screams from the jungle beyond. Even in those guttural, inhuman voices there was no mistaking the notes of grief and rage.
“They’ve found Kryptus,” Rene surmised, “Just like you said they would.”
“I take it the natives are restless,” Exar tittered nervously, “Tailo, methinks we gotta go.”
Rene saw Zildiz hesitate, weighing the balance of her fears and forming an internal consensus. He made a move to tip the scales in his favor, and spoke to her from the heart:
“Zildiz. I swear to you that as long as it is within my power to protect you, I will not allow you to come to harm. You are a prisoner of penultimate importance to the Fleet. I’d sooner die than fail in my mission to get you back to civilization. If you doubt my intentions, consider the fact that nobody in their right minds would’ve tried so hard to keep you alive, not unless they have very good reasons to do so.”
“I am not like the Leapers or your people, the Gallivants. I am a soldier of the Fleet, and my priority is the continuation of my species—our species,” he added firmly, “Now, I can’t begin to imagine what horrors and depravities your kind have suffered these past few centuries, or what the Vitalus has taught you to believe. But in my mind, we are all one people under the same god. If that god is the Vitalus, then it is clear that he hates us. Why else would he, in all his supposed omnipotence, condemn us to live in this unending state of warfare and ignorance? Why does he forbid the full use of the human intellect, the sole source of our comfort and security in an uncaring universe? Why must he despise us so?”
“I don’t know the answers to those questions. But I do know this: I do not hate you, Zildiz of the Gallivants. In fact, I would very much like to help you. Will you let me do that?”
Rene stood up and lifted the hatch, turning to offer her a hand.
“Besides! If you come with me, we can go ask the gods in person.”
This is certainly new, Zildiz thought, unsure of what to make of Rene’s offer. His suggestion of a pan-kindred alliance bound together by their shared ancestry was ridiculous, of course. She knew enough of the mathematical models and the general principles of nature to know that such an undertaking was doomed by definition. And yet here was an opportunity unlike any other.
Rene meant to take her to one of the last remaining holdfasts of the Betrayers. Who would have thought that those ancient demons were still clinging on to life, lurking in some nameless abyss, waiting for their chance to wreak one final act of vengeance upon an unsuspecting Arachnea.
And here she was, uniquely placed to destroy them all in one fell stroke. Once she was nestled in that abode of evil, a single transmission from her magnetosynaptic organ to the Vitalus was all it would take to bring Its righteous fury down upon them.
The rewards would be immense. At the very least they would make her a Matriarch. Her gilt helix would live on forever in the generations to come, her legacy enshrined in the undying architecture of the genome. Her children would never go hungry or cold for the rest of their lives. She and her brood could have their pick of exomorph grafts.
Infrared eyes for night stalking, hypo thorax stabilizer tendons for prolonged flight, extra waste ducts, subdermal heat signature regulators, biochemical afterburners to add thrust, not to mention a whole slew of offensive weaponry—nothing would be off the table!
All she had to do was take Rene’s hand.
She did. The Fleet-man lifted her up out of the burrow, trying not to look too surprised at her acceptance.
A very naïve race, she decided. He caught her calculating gaze and must have mistaken it for the beginnings of friendship, for he said:
“Glad to have you aboard, Zildiz. Now let’s get the hell out of here.”

Today I will be briefly explaining the practice of Gematria. Gematria comes from ancient Jewish mysticism. It is the practice of combining the letter with the number, with the word. It is said this is how God created the world.
How does it work? Gematria has 4 major ciphers. The first two are easy as ABC, literally. For example A=1 B=2 C=3. And so on. The code can also be read backward from Z to A. “People’s assumptions of who’s a victim and who’s a perpetrator differs by gender. People tend to stereotype men as perpetrators and women as victims. This project built upon those findings by examining how people evaluate harm, when that harm is unintended and results from interventions aimed at helping people,” explained study author Tania Reynolds, an assistant professor at the the University of New Mexico, in a press release.
“Most policies have trade-offs whereby some individuals are benefitted, and some are either not affected or actively harmed,” Reynolds said. “How do people evaluate these costs? If it’s the case that one gender benefits while the other is harmed, might that influence whether people evaluate the intervention or policy as worthwhile?”
To investigate the gender bias in acceptance of instrumental harm, the researchers conducted a series of three studies…
Study 1 found that participants were significantly more willing to accept instrumental harm when men suffered the harm compared to when women did. This gender bias was influenced by the gender of the participant, with female participants showing a greater bias in accepting harm inflicted on men than male participants…
Study 2 constructively replicated the findings of Study 1. Participants consistently showed a greater willingness to support interventions benefiting women at the cost of men compared to the reverse scenario. Female participants exhibited a stronger bias in this direction, while male participants did not show a similar bias. Additionally, the study explored the influence of ideological beliefs and found that participants who endorsed feminism or egalitarianism were more supportive of interventions favoring women…
Contrary to expectations, Study 3 found that the gender bias in accepting instrumental harm persisted even in contexts where women are traditionally expected to make sacrifices. Both male and female participants were more likely to endorse interventions inflicting harm onto men than women. Exploratory analyses suggested that feminist identification did not predict this bias in this context. However, participants with liberal political ideologies were more likely to accept harm to men.
Together, the findings indicate that people tend to show a gender bias, favoring instrumental harm for men over women in various contexts. This bias appears to be influenced by participant gender, political ideology, and the endorsement of feminist or egalitarian beliefs.
“Throughout history, countless male lives have been sacrificed on the battlefield, ostensibly to promote the greater good,” the researchers concluded. “Our findings suggest that these sentiments persist beyond the field of combat. For many people, accepting instrumental harm to men is perceived as worth the cost to advance other social aims.”

Hi all,
I have a windfall inheritance of around $250,000 and I want to take a year or two before deciding how to invest it, as I'm not sure whether I will use it as a deposit on a PPOR or put it into shares for the long term. I figured that putting it into a high interest savings account is the way to go, but I'm a bit unsure about my strategy.
I'm looking at the AMP Saver Account as an option, as it provides a bonus rate of up to 5.4% on balances up to $250,000 as long as you deposit $1,000 in the previous month. My plan is to invest around $226,000 up front and then invest the rest in $1,000 monthly instalments over two years to meet the requirements for the bonus rate.
As I understand it, as long as I do this over the two years, I will meet the requirements for the bonus rate of 5.4% and will accrue around $26,000 in interest over the two years. Due to the accrual of interest and compounding, the account should be just over the $250,000 limit after the first year and, in the second year, interest on the $250,000 will be calculated at 5.4% while anything over that will be calculated at the base rate of 1.2%. I can just keep making the $1,000 monthly instalments for the second year.
Is this correct and is it the best strategy, or am I missing something? I'm also wondering whether it's possible after the second year to just withdraw another $24,000 from the account and then re-invest that in monthly instalments over the further next two years, to continue to meet the requirements for the bonus rate. I ask because there's this section of the terms that I wonder whether that would breach:
"If you engage in any activity which, in our reasonable opinion, is not consistent with the spirit of the Saver Rewards, we may, acting reasonably, close your AMP Saver Account(s), suspend or cease applying Saver Rewards to your AMP Saver Account and reverse Saver Rewards previously applied."
Does anyone have any experience with the AMP Saver Account? I'm not very financially literate, which is part of the reason I'm taking the time to put this in an account until I can learn a bit about the best way to invest it.

This will be a sort of series analyzing different aspects of Gege's choice of fighting elements and his magic system, with considerations for the anime as well. Though I will be analyzing Jujutsu Kaisen's magic system, I will mostly be focusing on the physical fighting elements, including hand to hand, weapon use, and overall strategic combat. You cannot discuss a jjk fight without mentioning the importance of strategy and deception!
TLDR: Just read the Problem Solver Section for a general idea of what I'm talking about.
I've been reflecting heavily about how to use powerful people in a story all at once. In my mind, in order to have powerful characters, the author will simply have to upscale all others to somewhat match them; that way, an author can avoid a power fantasy or mary sue issue. Upscaling does not always mean bigger blasts. Todo exemplifies a character with a strong ability not reliant on a huge blast.
In effect, Todo uses Goku's Instant Transmission, but limited to an uncertain, wide range relative to himself. I enjoy Gege's ability to take aspects of other manga and effortlessly incorporate them into jjk. Even if Boogie Woogie was not meant to be Goku's IT, there are other direct references to other powers like Yuji's jajanken (Gon from HunterxHunter), and Domain Expansions being similar to bankai (Bleach). Point being, Gege takes pieces of other magic systems and adds to them what he needs to ensure jjkverse maintains its individuality.

Boogie Woogie, The Problem Solver

Boogie Woogie has stood up against two of the most difficult opponents in the entire verse: Kenjaku and Sukuna. Before I delve into breaking down Todo's use as a powerful story mechanism, a small rant. Skip the section below if you don't care about Yuki vs. Kenjaku.
Kenjaku having gravity abilities exists solely so that he can logically survive Yuki's Bombaye and mass-type cursed technique. It makes sense narratively for Yuki to defend Tengen and eventually face Kenjaku, considering they philosophically oppose one another. Yet, with all intents and purposes, Yuki should have killed Kenjaku there. While the fight was entertaining, why go so far as to give Yuki something like a black hole just for it to be countered with a cursed technique reversal? That part specifically was not entertaining, it was disrespectful to both Yuki and the reader who had to see it.

The issue of Kenjaku having arguably the most powerful simple domain and having an open barrier with gravity powers meant that he was practically undefeatable. If someone tried to do a domain battle, he would either easily suffer their domain with SD, or he'd win the clash with an open barrier. If Kenjaku needs to block something, he will just use his antigravity shield. Kenjaku also has multiple cursed spirits with differing beneficial utilities for him to use; this allows Gege to add whatever backdoor or advantage Kenjaku needs at any given moment. If Kenjaku needs to escape, Gege can write in a useful cursed spirit that will allow it.

In all fairness, in the Lake Gosho colony, Gege used Kenjaku's abilities to their most sensible limits. Why wouldn't Kenjaku have secured surveillance spirits? Of course Kenjaku can track all the resurrected sorcerers. Kenjaku's caution and overall security makes sense for his character, as he's calculating and strategic.
Kenjaku's own capabilities therefore demands a character who does at least one of two things: Gege needs a character that matches his SD, DE, and gravity abilities, and or someone who simply bypasses those factors. Todo, coupled with Yuta, simply bypass all the things that make Kenjaku a difficult opponent. To note, Takaba did his part in weakening and distracting Kenjaku, which allowed Todo and Yuta's attack to work.

Kenjaku's antigravity shield acts as the ultimate last effort defense. I will avoid saying that Gege wrote himself into a corner, but it does boggle my mind that Gege allowed Kenjaku to have this ability. Regardless of my issues with his gravity powers, Gege masterfully uses Todo to bypass such an overpowered ability.

The sound effect on the double spread does not say SLICE, but it instead was Todo's vibraslap onomatopoeia. Kenjaku was standing next to Takaba's body, then after the attack, Yuta now stands in the same place. Yuta and Kenjaku switched places, which allowed Yuta to bypass the antigravity shield. Kenjaku would have been able to use it at least in the direction that Yuta was in, so Todo swapped Yuta to be behind Kenjaku.

Todo performed BW again here to bring Yuta and Kenjaku closer so Yuta could stab Kenjaku in the brain.

Just Avoid the Domain Clash

I originally believed that Sukuna would not get his domain back because there's no real way for anyone in the cast to survive it. Again, Sukuna demands the anti-mary sue rules: Gege needs a character that matches his DE and Kamino, and or someone who simply bypasses those factors. Todo does the latter yet again. By expanding his technique, he could successfully save the cast from being oneshotted. I like Gege's execution here, because it allows for the cool moment of Sukuna finally revealing Kamino, and the audience gets to enjoy the calamity that it brings. Gege does all of that while saving the audience from a complete wipeout of the cast. Yet, Gege still understands the give and take of a high stakes narrative and includes a heart wrenching death for good measure.

Essentially, Todo and BW allows for Gege to allow powerful characters like Kenjaku and Sukuna to sensibly perform at their best while not being the unbeatable plot devices that Gege made them to be. At the very least, BW enables defeat to a certain degree. Gege's characters' interesting and creative abilities allows for dynamic, somewhat chaotic, but fulfilling fights.

Too often, I see people discussing stories generally as if characters have real life autonomy and aren't being controlled by at least one author. There are a number of blindly parroted statements that keep getting posted here over and over via circle jerks that need to stop considering they're patently false and can be disproven by anyone capable of taking 10 seconds to run a google search.
I know that's a high bar to clear for many people, so I went ahead and ran the numbers for you. I chose to use Fords since they're the most common model out there, and have the widest range in available sizes (full size, modern midsize, old compact, new trucklet).
Full size trucks have not grown appreciably in decades. Everyone always parrots that a midsize today is the same size as a full size from 20 years ago. This is flat-out false when accounting for like-configuration.

For starters, truck lengths in the 80's and 90's (even early 2000's) didn't include the rear bumper in the length calculation. Once this length is added in (I added 4" if they weren't included, which was for the 97 and 04 F-150s and the 08 Ranger), they're nearly the same when accounting for like-configuration (cab size and bed length). The additional length is due to cabs being extended slightly in the mid 00's to add additional legroom for passengers. This is why the rear seats of a modern crew cab truck are arguably the most comfortable rear passenger seats of any vehicle available outside of something like a Maybach or Rolls Royce. Note that I also included a popular modern crew cab in this comparison, noting that it isn't appreciably different than the most common spec of yesteryear, the extended cab/short bed configuration.
Additionally, widths have been the same 79.X" forever. This is due to anything over 80" requiring clearance lights and being subject to additional regulations, which manufacturers want to avoid.
As for height, and this one is a surprise to me: I was ready to concede, but the height of newer half tons has grown less than 2" for a truck in like-configuration (usually meaning 4x4 in this case) over the last 27 years. Hood heights have grown tremendously as cooling requirements have grown for the increase in towing and payload ratings, but overall is relatively unchanged. EDIT: Since soooo many people got pissed about this, let me touch on hood heights a bit more. I tried looking for concrete information on hood height comparisons across various generations, but there is nothing out there except anecdotal evidence or ancient forum posts of people holding tape measures up to every type of vehicle imaginable (there was one comparing to a late model Camaro in that thread). After going through 4 pages, the only notable one I was able to find was an OBS 2WD Chevy 2500 having a hood height of 48". Additionally, I found this image of a 7th gen F-150 from the 80's. The stock tires would be 235/75R15s with a diameter of 29", for reference. Edit 2: Thanks to RelativeMotion1 for this comment that gives us a data point of 50" for the hood height of a 2022 F-150 .
Going even further, with another shocker, when accounting for like-configuration, the length of the Ranger hasn't grown appreciably in length either. A 2008 model and a 2023 model in extended cab/6' bed configuration are nearly the same at 209" long. The newer one is indeed wider and taller, however. Unless you go to a regular cab/6' bed Ranger, an old model Ranger is going to be identical in every way to a Maverick except being slightly longer (209" vs 199").

Another common thing that comes up is towing capacities. Vehicles in Europe have much higher tow ratings than equivalent models sold in the US. This is for tongue weight: trailers in the us are set up for 10-15% of the weight of the trailer being tongue weight, vs 5-7% in Europe. This is for stability, particularly at high speeds. In most of the US (yes Californians, I know trailers in your state are limited to 55mph, but you're the exception, not the norm), there is no separate speed limit for vehicles towing trailers. If you want to tow your trailer at 80mph across west Texas, you are more than welcome to, assuming the trailer tires are rated for it. That extra tongue weight ensures that the trailer remains stable and doesn't develop sway.
This added tongue weight leads to another common misconception: curb weight vs gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).
Curb weight is what most people think of when they think of weight: how much does the vehicle weigh when sitting static and not running or loaded. GVWR is the maximum weight the vehicle can be loaded to legally while hauling a load (total weight on both of the vehicle axles combined). Maximum payload capacity is the difference between these two values.
One particular thing to note is that tongue weight of a trailer counts as payload on the vehicle and eats into your available payload. For example (completely made up numbers, not any particular vehicle), many people will see that their vehicle is rated to tow 5000lbs and has a payload capacity of 1000lbs or so. What they don't realize is that when you hook up that 5000lb trailer, you immediately lose 500lbs of your available payload capacity to the tongue weight of the trailer. If that 5000lb trailer is a camper, you can now only haul yourself, and maybe 1 other person and a small amount of gear, at best. You have a total of 500lbs of gear you can load in the vehicle rather than a full 1000lbs. No simply "hooking up a 5000lb trailer, loading up 4 people, 4 bags of gear, a couple coolers, and a dog" and going camping for a weekend. You'll be well over your vehicle's GVWR.
If you exceed this rating and were to get into an accident, it wouldn't be uncommon for your insurance to proceed to drop you post-incident at best, or outright refuse to cover you due to operator negligence, at worst.
Additionally, the climate and topography of the continental US, particularly the central and western areas, is much harsher than mainland Europe. This is exemplified in the standard that all US vehicles are tested to to determine max tow rating: SAE J2807.
This standard specifies a number of grueling tests to ensure a vehicle is more than capable of hauling its rated load:
If your vehicle passes all of those tests at a given trailer weight, it is now certified to tow that weight. Every possible engine and axle configuration is tested independently.
Now please, for the love of god, can we stop with asinine comments we've seen such as "a Ford Maverick is the same size as a full size truck from 20 years ago", because newsflash, it's not:

Hello! Just wanted to catch others up to speed (not that the majority do NOT know here) and have this post serve as a reference down the road. I'm going to make this relatively short and sweet with links/references. This is just grazing the surface as many of these points have been expanded upon by others over the months/years. Also I think this is my first Teddy post!
Disclaimer: These are my opinions. I am not telling you to do anything.

Recent Stock Volatility

There were likely multiple reasons for recent price action:
  • GameStop's stock went from $10 to $80 without any material company news.
  • The company just purchased about 1.2M shares ~$30 under the 10b safe harbor rule.
  • Credit Suisse accounts were closed. Typically when big news happens with CS this tends to correlate with GME price moves, likely due to swaps.
  • Keith Gill / DFV / Roaring Kitty comes out at the perfect moment around the $20 mark. This was a point of technical breakout. See bottom bullet.
  • Volume started increasing when GME posted the Global Controller position on 4/24/24. Perhaps that was the spark vs. another cause as listed here.
  • Despite a low-ish number of FTDs reported for their 3/26/24 earnings, my assumption is that there were more than reported given that volatility markedly increased around C35 from earnings day.
  • The borrow fee has been rising since the 3/26/24 earnings and typically precludes volatility for GME.

  • This also was something of a technical breakout given the stock price started squeezing above what was the upper channel line from the fall/winter 2020. That channel has been respected for quite a while. Additionally, there was the breakout from the Dorito which is not shown here (Dorito man can fuck off btw).

  • CAT implementation timing was likely important as well: 5/13/24 testing, 5/24/24 resolution of inconsistencies, 5/31/24 full compliance. Perhaps Keith Gill was aware of this timing as well.
  • One of the few reasons I have picked up on this timeframe is that I have been following this MACD trend for 1.5 years. That indicates IMO that this has been planned. I defer the reader to the Teddy book ⏰ tinfoil.

Teddy Tinfoil

I would say Keith eats tinfoil for breakfast. There are quite a few possible references to Teddy / BBBY in Keith Gill's tweets. Chime in if I missed anything:
  • Kansas City shuffle (empty blue chairs / empty seats as shareholders)
  • 'Bee' my victim (honeypot page from Teddy books) guy is stalking a bear. As if BBBY was the bear trap.
  • "They found a loophole... As stupid as they look they're actually good at paperwork." (blue team)
  • Brief video of RC wearing butterfly wings on a runway (during 'can I ask you a blunt question - do you love him?' movie scene)

My Opinion on How This Is Going To Play Out

Company has now pre-released earnings financials and submitted a 45,000,000 share ATM offering and S3. I defer the reader to other posts discussing the S3 as it is complex. The important part of this is that at this point in time, anyone short the stock (directly, indirectly, etc.) is at considerable risk now and in the long term. Because of this:
FIRST: There will be a short squeeze and GameStop will raise several billion dollars using their ATM offering.
NEXT: The company will acquire one or several businesses for their Net Operating Losses (NOLs), legacy shorts, logistics, patents, and shareholders. I anticipate this in the fall/winter of 2024.
THEN: I defer the reader to the many posts about reverse triangle mergers / depository trust unit dividends (possibly involving Teddy Bank). Other people would be able to better describe this than me.

What Price Action Will Happen?

I expect a short squeeze within the next 2 months. Astrologists predict the price could reach several hundred to several thousand dollars per share, possibly following Fibonacci levels, possibly going to the whole round numbers of 69, 420, 741, and beyond. I anticipate the price will remain high to prevent further speculative investing after this.
  • Shorts are likely to exit their positions before any potential dividend or corporate action is announced. Hedge funds, market makers, and brokers who are short or who hold swaps and other strategies involving naked shorts must decide to close now or face significant costs later. If they do NOT move now it could potentially lead to either their downfall or prolonged financial bleeding. More on this down below
  • You may think you're priced out now - just wait. You'll be even more surprised.
  • This trend has persisted for ~2 years; I don't think it will stop now.

Fuckery is Possible

This goes without saying, but I would go into this anticipating the following:
  • PCO of the options chain.
  • I would expect it will undergo a period of time where you'll be unable to trade this, but likely after the company action is announced.
  • Trading halts.
  • Wide bid/ask spreads.
  • MSM and social media influx of making people feel bad for not selling at high prices.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX!? (Why is this happening)

The company has been setting up for M&A for quite a while. Some of this has been foretold (see my profile for posts called Welcome to GMERICA and We're Pregnant - unable to link to SS here) by others (see Edwinbarnesc, and many more).

1: Change to a Holding Company

  • GME withdrew their credit rating long ago. Odd.
  • Recent SEC filings reveal significant strategic shifts. The unusually large 10Q filed on September 6th, with 98 mentions of acquisitions, indicates upcoming corporate actions. The delegation of portfolio management to RC and the modification of the investment policy further underscore this shift. Gamestop's relabeling as a holding company (i.e., like a Berkshire Hathaway).
  • They were relabeled in the OCC (options clearing corp) as a Holding Company. It is not significant IMO as it has likely been a holding company for a while, but is listed here because it's been discussed recently.
  • Speculation about holding company units, which contain shares of several companies and are indivisible, supports this theory. If GameStop acquires these companies, shareholders might receive dividend units.

2: Many other factors

  • Additionally, the resolution of outstanding inconsistencies in the Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT) by 5/24/24 is crucial.
  • FTDs are likely very high right now because of the higher volume. Once CAT is in full compliance I would expect it would be difficult for market makers to continue with their usual shenanigans.
  • GameStop still has very high short interest, possibly much more than reported, coupled with significant shareholder engagement.
  • There are hundreds of thousands to millions of people reading about, thinking about, talking about this.
  • Swaps have expired. I defer the reader to posts about Credit Suisse and UBS. Typically when major news for this occurs it happens to coincide with GME price action if you've been paying attention over the past few years.
  • Initial margin calculations depend upon month-end price for March, April, and May. We going higher for May, so that means come 9/1/24 the dollar bucks that will be required to maintain the swap position will be higher.

3: Market psychology

  • We know they're fucked. They know they're fucked. They are not going to allow you to plan for this. The movement will be quick and sudden.
  • They are being given an out here to buy shares from a company willing to sell them shares. When way the hell more shares than are available are needed to be purchased at a time they NEED to purchase them for multiple reasons (discussed above). Both those short and long know what is going to happen. The expectation and speculation on that plays a big role. Why do you think GME got to $420.69 last time? People put in sell limit orders there, and other people NEEDED to buy the shares at whatever price...
  • So, they're going to close at what they perceive to be a reasonable price at a loss now, however, they'll likely reopen positions up high. If they do NOT do this they will literally be annihilated once GME turns into a holding co and starts distributing dividends of the trust shares they intend to do.
  • Also realize there is a psychologic end to the story once it does in fact squeeze. They NEED that before the final phase. They need people to believe 'it did it' and 'it's over; not worth speculating on anymore.' So the next phase of all of this is 'aw shit everyone sold it's over.' But it won't be, yet the majority will still not be convinced and doubt will be sowed.
  • They DO NOT want you to be long for the next phase.

2024.05.20 17:11 AspectIndependent895 Skill Point System, could use some brainstorming / feedback

So for a while I've been thinking about finding a way to introduce some sort of way to allow a player to increase their skills by giving them an additional way to add another modifier, I'm not quite sure or thats the right way to word it, but hopefully it's good enough to get the point across.
The game systems we currently are D&D 5th Edition and the fan made SW5e, essentially the same rules.
EDIT 1: As for the lacking since it's been brought up, and I should have specified this more clearly, so here we go!
I was meaning in regards to their ability scores, It was discussed when I saw how terrible he rolled, and my friend insisted on just going with that despite saying he can re-roll if he wants (and adviced he would), ended up with a decent bit of -1's and -2's, with mostly neutral besides his main stat being the only good one, my dad's stats were pretty alright, 16 and 15 on the main stats, and the rest 10-12's before adding the racial stats, that keeping in mind,
I have kept most DC's fairly easy, with only using higher DC's when it really is meant to be harder, on a new series on one shots I've adjusted my rules for rolling with an choice to either roll 3 sets, or choose the stats (which I've upped a bit), they both opted for the rolling because they did think it was more fun to roll.
I've been liking the idea of maybe providing them with a way to increase their skills that goes beyond just making it proficient or grant expertise I know that rule exist to spend 1 gold per day for 250 days whilst requiring a instructor (not sure or expertise counts for this rule?)
To clarify, the only skills talking about here are just the I guess basic skills, Athletics, Acrobatic, Stealth, Medicine, History, Performance, etc.
1 of my current ideas is the following, inspired by a Star Wars RPG with West End Games rules I was part of a long time, where the DM would reward us with x points (never knew how he calculated it) to for example we'd spend 3 points to go from 3D to 3D+1, another 3 for +2 and another 3 to go fom +2 to 4D and then use 4 points, and so forth.
Ofcourse Fifth Edition doesn't have that and just works with modifiers (and proficiency / expertise) to end up in a +1, +2, +3, +4 and so forth, so I'd be introducing an additional modifier next to the ability modifier and proficiency bonus.
ofcourse with wanting to introduce something like that... I needed to work through a few things.
-- Awarding Points -- I considered two things, either introduce a get x points level up (which currently rarely happens since I want to not overwhelm the players with even more abilities / spells, etc, they already struggle with the amount of things they have as it is)
Or allow them to gain points for every quest completed, which I've been leaning more towards, before I can decide how much points one would reward regardless I get to the next point.
-- Upgrading Cost -- In the early example going from 3D to 4D it essentially used 9 points if doing it in 1 go, the thing is, this is where negative modifier I don't really know what to do, since say doing 3x for something that is a -1, it would just end up on -3 so technically this would be free upgrades, hell I should be giving them points, an idea I had is doing the same thing in reverse and it would allow them to decrease their negative, from -3 to -2 it would be 9, -2 to -1 6.. etc;
The idea is that they kinda suck at that skill when in the negative, so it's going to take more effort for them to get better at it, and going higher up in the positive it still gets harder because they are being taught more advanced techniques in that skill... if that makes and sense at all?
I would most likely want introduce a small cap in how much times a skill can be upgraded, since I wouldn't want to unbalance it to much where a player would have a say +20 to a skill, essentially making it impossible for them to fail (unless rolling a 1) unless I were to up the difficulty of that cap to where I then make it impossible for any of the other player(s) which I personally don't think would be any fun.
As a requirement I would say they still should find someone to be willing to instruct like with the original ruling still spend a small amount of time enough to warrant someone going from a say +1 to +2 and not just a overnight (ok cool I'm better at now!), maybe like a week, or perhaps even opt for doing a series of d20 rolls just following the idea of death saves, 10+ they succeed, otherwise no progress.
This has I'm guessing been a bit of a ramble, but thanks if you took the time to read it :)
I'll gladly take any feedback / criticism, mostly just trying to make the game more enjoyable for them instead of chugging magic items at them.

A swap is a contract in which two parties exchange cash. Traders use swaps to make money or reduce risk. Many types of swaps are available, but the easiest to understand is an interest rate swap. A back-to-back swap is a way to reverse the flows of cash from another swap. It takes three parties to complete a back-to-back swap. Party A
In this extended example, Party A is a bank. It makes fixed rate loans and pays a floating rate on deposits. It faces the risk of rising interest rates, which will increase the interest it pays to savers. To hedge this risk, it agrees to a one-year interest rate swap with Party B for a "notional" amount of $100 million. This isn’t a loan, but a reference number to calculate cash flows. The swap requires Party A to pay out, say, a 6 percent annual rate and get a floating rate on the notional amount. In this way, Party A reduces the risk of higher interest rates. The parties exchange cash flows monthly. Party B
Party B is a trading desk at a hedge fund. The trader is convinced interest rates are heading lower and wants to make a bet on her belief. To give an example:
There was a trend people noticed in the 2010s in gaming. The most common main character was:
Male, moderate height, short brown hair, white
Market research showed that the average gamer has most of those characteristics, so it was easiest to self insert for them, and thus, increased sales
This was not politically charged, it was cold calculated math and it produced positive results
Now we are seeing protagonists across every ethnicity and gender. While this can be seen as “progress”, it can, and likely already has, negatively impacted sales because the primary target demographic can no longer self insert
Unless the new goal is to create a new primary target demographic, but that would be a foolish business move because:
  1. Introduces risk by shifting target demos
  2. By definition, minorities are in the minority, there are less of them than the majority
I don’t know if we’ll ever see the cliche brown buzzcut 5’9” white dude as every main character again, but there will likely be some reversion to increase sales if market testing ever discovers demographics are the problem in sales

Flying Buddha Pattern: Simple Trading Strategy
Sometimes the simplest things are the ones that work best. And in this case it was no different: the Flying Buddha pattern combines simple rules to create a relatively new entry setup.

What is the Flying Buddha Pattern?

To define this pattern, the first thing we must do is insert two moving averages into our chart: a 5-period exponential moving average (EMA5) and a 10-period simple moving average (SMA10), both calculated on the closing prices. Once we have done this, we can now define the pattern:
  • A bullish Flying Buddha is a candle that has a maximum below the EMA 5, with said average being below the SMA 10.
  • A bearish Flying Buddha is a candle whose minimum is above the EMA 5, when said average is above the SMA 10.
As always, a picture is worth a thousand words, so let's look at some examples. In this first hourly chart of the GBPUSD pair you can see several bullish Flying Buddhas (green boxes):

Of course, if we look a little in the history of that same chart, we will also quickly find multiple bearish Flying Buddhas (red boxes):

The previous charts already indicate something that will be the common trend in all the Flying Buddhas that we detect:
  • On the one hand, this pattern usually manifests itself in very marked and vertical trends.
  • On the other hand, it is not uncommon to see multiple consecutive Flying Buddhas.
The question now is: what do we do with this pattern?

Trading with Flying Buddhas

Surely the most astute readers already sense where things are going with this Flying Buddhas thing. The idea is to build a mean reversion strategy, since precisely this pattern is alerting us that the price has moved too far from its equilibrium level and a correction is pending. So:
  • If we detect a bullish Flying Buddha, we should look for the long side by placing a buy stop one pip above the maximum of the candle that forms the pattern. The stop loss should be placed on the opposite side of the candle, that is, at its minimum.
  • On the contrary, if what we have on the screen is a bearish Flying Buddha, then what we will look for is to enter shorts by placing a sell stop 1 pip below the minimum of the candle that confirms the pattern. Again we will put the stop loss on the opposite side, that is, at the maximum.
Additionally, we must take into account the following entry order management rules:
  • If at any time the price reaches the stop loss level without having first executed the entry, we will cancel the entry order because the market will be indicating to us that the price is returning to the established trend.
  • Likewise, if neither the stop loss level nor the entry point is reached in the candle after the Flying Buddha occurs, we will also cancel the entry order.
Finally, the following rules apply to determine the profit outflow:
  • If we are bought, we will close the position when a candle closes below the open of the last bullish candle.
  • Likewise, if we are sold, we will close our position when a candle closes above the open of the last bearish candle.
Let's look at an example of a bearish Flying Buddha trade on the daily chart of the GBPJPY pair:

In the chart above, we can see a bearish Flying Buddha forming, with the entry executed on the next candle at a price of 145.71. Then the price begins a downward trend so we maintain the position, until on December 26 the candle closes above the opening of the last bearish candle, at which time we should close the position at 142.61, with a profit of 310 pips.

Does the Flying Buddha chart pattern work?

Although I have yet to create the Expert Advisor with the strategy, we can take a look at the results of the analysis carried out in Daily Forex. Considering a history from 2002 to 2015 for the main currency pairs in the 4-hour timeframe, the conclusions obtained are the following:
  • The best results are obtained in the AUDUSD, EURUSD and USDCHF pairs. In the analysis carried out by Adam Lemon, the exit is not trailing, but rather establishes profit ratios in relation to the stop loss, obtaining the highest returns when high ratios are used, of the order of 10 to 1 or more.
  • Likewise, the time of entry also has an impact on the results: thus, entries made at 0:00, 12:00 and 16:00 (London time) generate the highest profits.
  • Finally, a filter that I consider very important is the range of the candle that forms the Flying Buddha (or, in other words, the distance between the entry point and the stop loss). The analysis carried out by Daily Forex shows that it is advisable to filter the operations, taking those in which the range of the Flying Buddha is less than 0.50% of the price (additionally, good results are also obtained with a range greater than 1% of the price).

Conclusion

The Flying Buddha pattern allows us to build a simple mean reversion strategy, looking for a potential advantage in those market movements in which the price rises or falls a lot and quickly.
Once we detect a Flying Buddha, the execution of the entry stop order will allow us to quickly get on the market turn, once the first signs of the beginning of a correction appear.
Additionally, the fact that it is advisable to use Flying Buddhas with a small range allows us to obtain strategies with a good risk/reward ratio.

I continued to develop it, make it better and faster. After many months of work, I have a new version which I believe is worth posting again. I want to gather as much feedback as possible and to make Phoenix even better. It is NOT ready for production use and there are many more things that need to be done (see "issues").

Phoenix is a modern template engine for Spring and Spring Boot aiming to facilitate the development of complex web applications by providing a way to create complex and modular templates benefiting from server-side rendering for better integration between the frontend and backend.

Why Phoenix and not React/AngulaVue?

Phoenix is not intended to be a replacement for JS frameworks. Instead, Phoenix aims to utilize existing JS frameworks to add SSR, thereby enhancing page rendering speed and FE-BE integration. You no longer need to always return complex JSON; you can directly provide an HTML page with everything needed and nothing more. There can be a whole debate about SSR vs non-SSR, so Phoenix tries to combine the advantages of both.

Open Source

Phoenix is completely Open Source and can be used entirely for free. It is not yet stable enough to be used in production, but I will continue developing it, working on stability and performance, and will try to add other functionalities. And of course, a ⭐ is appreciated.

2024.05.20 09:55 ohheynaz I booked a ride for ¥15,602 ($100) but have now been charged ¥32,380 ($208)

I booked a taxi on the Uber app in Kobe, Japan and the price I was shown was ¥11,727 - ¥15,563 A payment of ¥15,602 was then taken from my card when the trip was completed then reversed the next day. The trip disappeared from my uber app then appeared a few days later with the new price of ¥32,380 and I’ve been asked to pay this.
Uber have responded to say the below:
Upon checking the trip, we found that the pick-up/drop-off location is shown as a straight line due to the curvature on the map. The fare has been adjusted after the trip of the same route last time, but it was not a trip that should have been rate adjusted. Please understand that it is impossible to drive over the sea. The Taxi has a meter, so the fare reflects the correct distance. Therefore, we will not be able to make any adjustments to the fare.
But that wasn’t the price I agreed to pay when I booked it and it’s not my fault that the uber app calculated it incorrectly. Is there any way I dispute this?

Would love to hear the Boglehead perspective on this.
The situation:
Mom: 76 years old, lives simply on very modest income from a small trust left by her mom. Only about 6 years of trust left at current withdrawal rates. Only other asset is her home which is fully owned and worth about 7 years of her income at current levels. She will probably live for another 20 years, which is how long her mom lived.
Me: 48 years old, 12-15 years until retirement, upper middle class income, max'ing 401k, also now doing backdoor Roth, mega backdoor Roth. NW by retirement should provide 80% of current income if the FIRE calculators are correct. If the market tanks then I keep working for longer.
The challenges: - Not enough in the trust to support Mom for rest of her life - Don't want to sell her home since she loves living there, or do a reverse mortgage since the economics suck
The strategy: treat the trust and her home as part of a unified asset pool with my own (same time horizon as my own retirement). Currently invested in VOO and money markets.
If possible keep the house until her death since she loves living there and it would avoid the capital gains if sold (I'd inherit it after she dies). Fund remaining years of Mom's retirement income from my own income and/or investments.
The risks: - Cash flow - once the trust is gone then I need to generate enough cash flow for her retirement. Do not currently have this additional cash flow from my own income. Thinking I'll need to get a bond ladder or something going in my own portfolio to create this cash flow. - Tax implications of gifting income - my mom would pay income tax on anything over the $18k yearly gift tax exemption. Thinking I should start gifting that now so she can draw on that in later years
