Reacting to random show #40! 01/10/2015 Jam Cruise! This show: let’s play 5 whole Similar Skin tracks. Also this show: let’s invite the ENTIRE BOAT to guest!
I mean just look at those notes! We have Jason Hann several times, Skerik, IVAN FUCKING NEVILLE, Jen Hartswick….the list goes on. Had to have been an absolute blast! I hope I get an opportunity to join a Jam Cruise after discovering this show. Atmosphere was palpable through the recording!
[you know the drill:] 20 years, random shows, lots of fun. Let’s dive in!

40

  • Puppet String to start us off. Song opens up directly after the first hard riff. Stasik holding the low end down while everyone tries to figure it out what they’re about to do. Jake eventually matches Pony’s bassline, but takes it in a heavier direction, and now the jam changes mood. Someone sounds like they’re down tuned or maybe an extra string on the guitar? They ride this downtune theme through a pretty evil sounding little jam.
  • Drops right into The Linear. They’re trying to catch hold of something in this jam that happens after the main part of the song, nobody has really settled on an idea.
  • We are randomly right back into Puppet String! Kind of nice to have just a little sandwich there to start the party.
  • It’s a Similar Skin bonanza here with the title track! Three tracks in a row? Album standard version here.
  • After a short, short break, Ringo! The first improv section is brief, but has great energy. After greasy animals, everyone drops out leaving Stasik and Myers to lay a groundwork. Once the groove is solidified, Joel and Jake are trying to outdo each other with little outside fills. There’s even a bongo breakdown! The rest of the guys start up a cool polymeter thing to lead back into Ringo to finish out.
  • Sounds like there were a couple guest stars on percussion for that one. Joel also greets the Jam Cruise crowd during the break here.
  • No Diablo at bat. SS wasn’t super new at this point, they must have just been feelin’ it! Standard, but Jake takes some tasteful liberties.
  • During the break now Brendan invites up Jen Hartswick: “My favorite person on the boat.”
  • Oh shit, they start up Ain’t No Sunshine! Perfect song for her voice, and she’s slaying! Seems like Joel is welcoming someone else on stage to play piano, but I didn’t catch the name.
  • Brendan: “it’s been a while since we’ve been on the boat, forgot how fucking awesome it is to be on the boat. Thanks to you crazy people for making it all happen.”
  • Bad Friday! Song stretches out after the main section, Joel way out front. Seriously - tearing shit down! And I am mistaken! Someone was guesting on keys there, according to the shout out.
  • End set
  • Educated Guess set two opener. One of my favorites on SS. I’ve said it before but this one is a victim a little bit of the very close vocal harmonies. Lots to rely on.
  • “This next song is about, uh, getting fucked up with your friends.”
  • Plunger, WAIT, 40s Theme! That was a truly bizarre, yet bizarrely graceful gaffe there. The recovery was so smooth that I’m doubting what I just heard. Haha. I’m really digging this early groove Pony has going, it’s very simple and in the pocket, but allows BB to do some really cool stuff as the others dig in. “You know what would sound really good right now? I think some Skerik.” Lots of cheering. Somebody starts teasing California Love. Now there’s some sexy-phone in the mix. Now monster snarling? Sax starts quoting California Love as well. After some wailing, pace picks up and we drop back into Jake’s portion of the solo. Fast as he can possibly go.
  • During the break, Brendan goads the audience for one more round of applause for Skerik. And one more round of applause “for yourselves, people.”
  • Plunger! The earlier confusion makes more sense now, someone got lost on the setlist. They play the song completely through, standard, and then things finally start to open up after they extend the outro. They bring the dynamics real real low before Kris starts a nice beat. Another fire shift on keyboard here, is this actually Joel this time? Things get real funky with dissonant chords, but Pony is keeping the low end smooth and buttery. “Ivan Neville everybody, give it up!” Daaaang he was KILLIN’ IT too, fantastic guest spot!
  • Jake starts Ocean Billy. I think the latter-day “All probably happened befoooooo” with Kris harmonizing is a damn fine addition. The energy has a real place to ramp up from here. Then afterwards drums drop out, quiets down, I think Bayliss says “We’re gonna be weird with this one” but I’m not sure. Stasik absolutely holding it down, sounds like Jake making very atmospheric noises, before all drops away leaving Andy by his lonesome. When everyone comes back in the vibe is drastically different. Dialed in. Things definitely do get weird though. Any other guests here? Now Jake returns to OB.
  • During the break, Joel introduces someone from Snarky Puppy joining on drums.
  • Jake starts Tribute to the Spinal Shaft! Drums definitely standing out - my God!! With a Regulate tease in the bottom half of the song. Another keys feature. Another guest?? This set is madness.
  • Drops In the Kitchen with no warning. Another bass-led jam starts up mid-song. Doesn’t sound like Pony. Whether it is or not, it’s a great job building the jam here. Back to Kitchen. Ahh it was Brownstein!
  • Live and Let Die! Is this the GnR version? kidding
  • End set! “We love you guys, thanks so much!” Joel comes back out after several minutes and asks the crowd “Can you believe we’re just floating around the Caribbean right now, it’s pretty badass.” Somebody starts playing Pipeline, because of surfing… ?I’m not following that train of thought. Joel: “We’re gonna play a couple more tunes if that’s okay with you guys”
  • Wappy Sprayberry! Joel starts making it real dirty on synth, Jake does the same rhythmically. Stasik and Myers in lock step. A simple but effective secondary theme starts up before things reach cut-time heaviness. Back to Wappy to end it.
  • Doesn’t end, more like crashes roughly into 1348! Even this song opens up mid-song. They are not relinquishing this stage! Not super long there but something! Back to 1348.
  • Another big thank you to the crowd. Although this recording hasn’t stopped…is there more???
  • Joel says Jam Cruise is the best party in the world, probably. Even more guests announced for this final track, several I didn’t catch all the names.
  • It’s About That Time! And it’s about time too! What? ENERGY ENERGY at the end, Kris is absolutely burning shit down. Ha the end of this song is so bizarrely incongruous after all that.
  • Jeeeeeeebus that was some shit right there. I may need to set my sights on Jam Cruise if it’s still a thing….
Man that was incredible! UMtil next time!

2024.05.12 16:16 RighteousVengeance What are Your Top Five Misfits songs? How About the Five Worst?

I've seen a few posts on YouTubes where the author shares their opinions as to the top five songs of Jem and the Holograms and The Misfits. (The Stingers don't even have five good songs. As far as I'm concerned, the series jumped the shark with the introduction of the Stingers.) And I find myself in disagreement with the choices. Some of the songs chosen seem kind of meh, comparatively speaking. while some truly great songs are overlooked, especially where The Misfits are concerned. So, I thought I'd review each song by The Misfits.
And I've set aside the listing of each song in order of appearance in the series, together with the links, so if anyone wants to do the same, you can just copy and paste the list and post your own ranking, if you'd like.

Five Best Misfits Songs:

Number 5: Takin' It All 14
This is one of those videos that I seldom see mentioned when people compile their list of favorite Misfits song. And I don't understand why. Granted, it's The Misfits being obnoxious, but isn't that what they're supposed to do for this series?
Tune is catchy, vocals are awesome, and by the standards of this series, the lyrics are also great. The video itself doesn't quite measure up, but it certainly isn't terrible. Overall, this video captures very well The Misfits' ambitious nature.
I especially like the refrain "We're takin' it a-a-a-a-a-ll. (We're takin' it, takin' it, takin' it all.")
Ironically, this song was used in the contest with Jem and the Holograms, and lost to Jem and the Holograms', Music is Magic. Personally, I thought The Misfits had a much better performance. Perhaps it was Jem's amazing high notes for Music is Magic that scored them the win.
9/10
Number 4: Surprise! Surprise! 68
"Do you like surprises?"
Not from The Misfits, I don't. At the beginning, the lyrics seem fairly innocuous, even benign. But the music, coupled with Pizzazz's ominous delivery, communicate beautifully that any surprise offered by The Misfits will be anything but pleasant. And the video worked very well with a fantasy sequence of what else? The Misfits tormenting Jem and the Holograms with nasty surprises.
9/10
Number 3: I'm Gonna Change (Roxy) 109
While this song is credited as being performed just by Roxy, it's obvious that Ellen Bernfeld performed this and used Pizzazz's voice. And there are backing vocals, which makes this a Misfits song in all but credit.
Roxy has decided to abandon The Misfits and live for herself. And this is her personal Declaration of Independence. It is nice to see this new insight into her character and find out that she can register other emotions besides anger and extreme contempt.
The video is quite excellent, underscoring Roxy's illiteracy as letters of the alphabet, incomprehensible to Roxy, blow in the wind like leaves. The way it alternates between black and white and full-color is an interesting effect.
I was planning on excluding this one in my ranking, as it's just Roxy and not all The Misfits. But I decided this is an undervalued gem (no pun intended) and add it to the list.
9/10
Number 2: I Like Your Style 73 (The title is actually "I Like Her Style" according to the opening credit, but the refrain is "I like your style.")
Welcome to The Misfits, Jetta! And may I say your debut was awesome?I think this one is so criminally underappreciated. The tune is catchy. The lyrics on point; for once, Pizzazz isn't singing about herself or her entitlement. The animation didn't do any fantasy sequence for this song; it depicted Pizzazz being Pizzazz, but hey, that's not always a bad thing. Jetta's sax was a nice touch, a few riffs here and there and not intruding on the singing. Love Stormer's and Roxy's backing vocals, too.
Why does this never seem to make anyone's top ten list? What's not to like about it?
10/10
Number 1: Universal Appeal 18
I've seen this one in Top Misfits Songs before, and for once, I understand why.
Music, lyrics, video, all are on point. The video was especially enjoyable, particularly the eclipse at the beginning, with Jem as the sun and Pizzazz as the moon. I also enjoyed the refrain of "universal appeal" when Roxy and Stormer come in from opposite sides. For once, Roxy isn't scowling or contemptuously sneering, and actually seems to be enjoying herself. I was so surprised by this, I almost started to like Roxy. I'm not kidding. I was looking at her in this video and thinking, "Who the hell are you, and what have you done with the real Roxy?"
Even The Misfits' costumes were cool. Reminiscent of the 1930s, but with a modern twist, down to the pillbox hat worn by Pizzazz.
This may their best one. Maybe even the best number in the series.
10/10.

Five Worst Misfits Songs:

Number 5: Free And Easy 106
In a word, bland. I've heard worse, but this song is so utterly flavorless and lacking in Misfits' character that it could be just as easily be sung by Jem and the Holograms. I can't even award extra points for Jetta's sax playing.
Besides, the song suggests that The Misfits are adverse to work. And while The Misfits' have many, many faults, laziness is not one of them. They often go to great lengths to put their machinations into operation, and they didn't attain their ability by being indolent. They have been seen many times in rehearsals. Say what you will about The Misfits, but they are hard workers.
This song just isn't The Misfits.
5/10
Number 4: I'm Gonna Hunt You Down 142
Oscar Wilde described foxhunting as, “The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable!”
Pretty insipid, flavorless stuff. The only thing that really stands out about this video is watching Jetta fall off a horse.
4/10
Number 3: Queen Of Rock And Roll 54
Another meh-fest. The most interesting thing about this video is the visuals itself. Pizzazz decked out as royalty and Jem and the Holograms bowing in homage to her. The song itself is lackluster.
4/10
Number 2: Outta My Way 1
Not just the first song by The Misfits, but the first song in the entire series. And to put it kindly, this is not an auspicious beginning. If I were watching this series from the beginning when it first came out, once I saw this video, I might have thought, "If this is what this series has to offer, I think I'll pass on the rest of it." The music's okay, but the lyrics are repetitious and not especially clever. If nothing else can be said for it, it does establish the general tone of The Misfits as a group, as their songs tend to be pushy, aggressive and very self-centered.
The video was a bit disturbing, as it depicts The Misfits torturing Jerrica. I was somewhat shocked when Pizzazz put on the boxing gloves; I expected it to depict Pizzazz beating up Jerrica in a boxing ring. Thankfully, Pizzazz only punched a target on a dunk tank that Jerrica was seated in. (You're meant to hit the target on dunk tanks with baseballs, not punch it. But since when does Pizzazz ever play fair?)
The visuals are what gives this song its low rating. Although the repetitious lyrics are hardly a saving grace. When viewed against the other Misfits songs in the series, this one comes across as a generic Misfits song, but a rather vapid one.
3/10
Number 1 (Worst of the Worst): Jack, Take A Hike 58
Full disclosure: like several songs in this series, this one was used more than once. And the first time I saw this one was in the episode, "The Jazz Player," where Pizzazz interrupts 1940's jazz trumpeter Tapps Tucker and physically forces him out of the studio. This is a new low, even by The Misfits' standards. Hence, my opinions on this might be somewhat biased by disgust, especially since the accompanying video to this song depicts a fantasy sequence in which The Misfits (mostly Pizzazz) torment the elderly musician, treatment normally reserved for Jerrica and Jem and the Holograms.
I'm especially baffled that Stormer would participate in such a thing. And what about Jetta, since she's a saxophone player and is obviously jazz influenced? You would think that at least Jetta would have some respect for a jazz legend like Tapps Tucker.
That aside, the song itself has an obnoxious, bratty-sounding "nyaah-nyaah-nyaah!" quality to it. And this seems to be a bad marriage of music and vocals. Somehow, Pizzazz sounds below the pitch when she sings it. Even being as dispassionate as I can, if I were ranking the worst of The Misfits songs, this would probably be at the very bottom.
Pizzazz, ESAD. And shame on you, Jetta. Shame on all of you. Musicians of your calibre should have more respect.
2/10

2024.04.24 20:12 BlackBull0719 Improvements to Sound! Euphonium --- response highly valued

As you all must know by now, even works that are seen as "perfect" can almost always be improved upon! Thus, I would like to ask you the same question the title alludes to: what could have been done to make Sound! Euphonium an even better show?

For one thing, I believe that the money that were spent on the recap movies (extended first-year SunFest musical, exclusive scenes like Asuka's childhood) should have been used to create longer episodes throughout the series (s2, ep 1 - 45 minutes) or more bonus episodes (Ready, Set, Monaka!).

Despite the fact that yuri leans towards a female audience, as a male myself, I personally feel as though KyoAni could have easily added more boys in the concert band. An example of this is that Takigawa Chikao (Sax) is the only other boy who is Shuichi's age --- in fact, in Kumiko's 3 years of high school, it can be noted that her class had the fewest number of boys joining compared to other years (if you want, I'll write it in the comments).

If you have seen some of my past posts, I like to know about the voice actresses/actors behind each character. As a die-hard shonen fan, I personally thought that Sound! Euphonium should have hired much more veteran actresses to make slice of life anime even more appealing.
PS: Some of my favorite Shonen actresses/actors in the show are...

Thank you, and I look forward to a productive discussion!

Sure enough, from around the corner came a compact vehicle. It was one of those cars, from the old days, that ran on interchangeable power supplies. No autodrive, or one of a very basic sort.

Two people were inside.

And the car was yellow.

"How did you know?" Axel had to ask.

"Been around."

The car continued a little further and stopped. The two humans exited. One was young and female, in jeans, a light blouse, and jacket. She had a bag with a strap over her shoulder. Even in her shades, Ross could tell she was deliberately not looking at him, the way pedestrians won't look at panhandlers.

And her shoes had high heels—high and narrow.

The other human was...old. How old, Ross and Axel couldn't say. There was a line humans crossed, and when they did they were simply "old."

For the record, he was also on the tall side. His beard was white. What was left of his hair was gray. He wore old denims and a corduroy jacket. He looked relaxed in a way the female human didn't. He wore glasses, too, something you didn't see much anymore. People wore glasses more as adornments, like bracelets or earrings. The old human looked like he really needed them.

Ross pressed one forepaw to the window, staring closely at the two. The old human smiled. The young female's lips moved as she cursed, struggling to keep her balance, her heels sinking into the gravel.

Axel turned around and shouted to the rest of the household: "H-u-u-u-u-mans! Humans are coming!"

It was standard practice to announce the arrival of any visiting humans. There were saurs who, for very good reason, desired to keep their distance, strangers or otherwise.

Outside, the old human waved at Ross.

Ross waved back.

"That guy," said Ross, "he OH-kay."

Axel waved to the old human. "Who is he?"

"He put Bomp."

The old human waved back to Axel.

"You know him?"

Ross shook his head.

"Then how do you know?"

Ross smiled. "In bones. You know! I know!" He pointed to the old human again. "He put Bomp!"

"Bomb?" Agnes rushed from her lair. "Who's got a bomb?"

"Not bomb. Bomp!"

Agnes ran up the plastic stairs. In an instant, she was at the window, forelegs on the ledge, hind legs on the seat-back.

"Now, who's got the bomb?" She scrutinized the humans.

"Not bomb. Bomp! Bee-oh-em-pee!" With each syllable, Ross tapped the window glass with his parsnip.

"What're you spelling for?" Agnes cocked her head to the humans outside. " They can't hear us."

"PEE, as in parsnip!"

"Pee? You should have taken care of that—"

"Not Beee! Not bomb! PEE!"

Agnes twisted around and shouted, "Attention! Attention all saurs! Dangerous humans are now approaching the house! I repeat: dangerous humans are now approaching! Take cover! They are armed with a bomb!"

"Bomb! No bomb! Nobody got bomb!"

"Then what were you yelling for?"

"Not yelling 'til you start yelling!" Ross pointed at her with his parsnip.

"Don't point that thing at me! How do you know they don't have a bomb?"

"How you know they do?"

"You said so!"

"Not say bomb! Said Bomp!"

"Well, why did you say a stupid thing like that?"

"'Cause it so!"

"Doesn't even mean anything! What the hell is a Bomp?"

"Bomp what make you you!"

"Makes me what?"

"You!"

"You're an idiot!" She looked back into the former dining room. "Correction! The dangerous humans may have a bomb! May have a bomb! Correction! Take appropriate precautions!" She climbed down to the armrest. "Come on—we'd better get to the door before they break it in!"

Axel and Ross followed.

"Are the humans really bad guys?" Axel asked.

Ross shook his head as he climbed down to the armrest. "Him, OH-kay. Her, don't know. Maybe OH-kay. Maybe NO-kay."

Agnes was in such a hurry to get to the door, she pushed right past Sluggo at first, then stopped and turned back to him. "Get Leslie to the shelter! There may be trouble!"

Sluggo looked thoroughly confused. "What shelter?"

Agnes, having no answer, just kept moving.

Kara and Bronte hurried out of the library to intercept Agnes. "What are you going on about?" Kara shouted.

"Invaders! Humans! Ross thinks they're carrying a bomb!"

"Not bomb! Not say bomb!"

A short distance away, still sitting on his plastic cube, Doc watched his hope of a pleasant morning's reverie fade away, with Agnes racing for the front door, followed by Axel, Ross, Sluggo, Leslie, Kara, Bronte, and Guinevere.

All around, the delicate psychic energy of the house altered. Some saurs followed the group following Agnes; some looked nervously toward the door; others headed upstairs.

The saurs watching the big video screen in the living room adamantly remained where they sat. On the screen, a dashing human male with a pencil moustache, accompanied by a female "princess," rode a flying carpet, circling a crowded bazaar. Another group of saurs, curious but cautious, gathered near the vestibule.

Doc had risen with the intent of joining them when the soft, low, raspy voice of Hetman took his attention.

"Kara? Bronte? What's going on? Am I alone again?"

He wasn't. Veronica, the red stegosaurus, was still standing near the bed. "I'm here," she said gently.

Hubert, stationed close to his bookshelves, made a low, guttural hum to assure Hetman he was not abandoned.

"My friend," Doc said, approaching Hetman's bed as quickly as his tricky left leg allowed, "there's a commotion at the arrival of some visitors. Agnes believes—"

"So I've heard. One would think the Cossacks and Tatars are amassed on the porch steps."

Doc smiled. "Not yet. These are just two. Reggie informs me one of them is Nicholas Danner. No doubt you've heard of him. A frequent contributor to the Atherton Foundation."

"Employed, I might add, by Toyco," said Preston, who had taken a break from writing to investigate the commotion.

"What brings him here, after all these years?" Hetman asked.

"That remains a mystery," Doc replied.

"If there is a mystery," said Hetman, "shall we investigate?" He raised his head to speak to Hubert. "If you would be so kind."

Hubert unlocked the wheels on Hetman's bed and pushed him along with Doc and Preston.

"If you need anything...," Veronica called up to Hetman.

"I'm quite comfortable, thank you."

They joined the crowd at the vestibule just as Agnes shouted to Tom, "Call the police! Call the National Guard!"

"Agnes," Tom said, laboring to steady his voice, "I've never—"

"Never isn't now! Something's up! I don't know what, but I'll be damned if I let you open that door!"

"Why?" asked Tom, plaintive, insistent.

"Why?" She stamped her left foreleg against the floor. "Because this is my home! Our home! I won't have it invaded by dangerous strangers!"

Hetman cleared his throat so that his words would come out strong and clear. "It is because this is our home that we cannot keep them out! These humans haven't threatened us. We welcome strangers because we were all strangers once."

Agnes opened her mouth, then withheld her rage. In this house, in this world, there was no one she held in higher regard than Hetman.

The doorbell rang.

Everyone turned to Agnes, who looked like she wanted to mention a city named Troy, and a certain horse.

When Tom reached for the door handle, she finally barked out, "You'll be sorry! Then you'll remember what I said!"

Tom opened the door.

And there they were.

Axel rushed out ahead of everyone, onto the wooden porch. He stood before the old human and looked up—straight up.

"Hiya!" said Axel.

"Hiya!" The old human, Danner, returned the greeting. He lowered himself to a crouch so that Axel and the other saurs didn't have to look up too far—just as Tom would have done.

"I'm Axel!"

"I'm Nick."

"Are you a bad guy?"

"I hope not."

He liked the old human's smile, his face. Something about it looked familiar in a way he couldn't explain.

"You ever been to space?" To Axel, it felt like a good way to start a conversation.

Danner shook his head. "Have you?"

"Nuh!" Axel shook his head. "But I talk to space guys. Reggie helps me talk to them almost every day!"

"Do they ever talk back?"

"Nuh!" He shook his head again. "But I think they listen!"

He looked up at the other human—the female.

"This is Christine," said Danner. "She works with me."

She didn't bend down. If anything, she seemed to stand taller. Her mouth was closed and smile-free. It reminded Axel of winter.

"Hiya!" said Axel.

She said nothing.

"I'm Axel!"

Nothing.

He was afraid to ask her if she was a bad guy. He dropped his gaze back to eye-level.

"You got tall heels on your shoes!"

A creature who lives close to the floor notices such things—shoes in general; hers in particular. In contrast, the rest of her looked so casual. Those shoes, with their long, narrow heels and thin, ornate straps said, "Business."

"Watch out for the ones with shoes like that!" Agnes, tail raised, strode to Axel's side. "They use those shoes to crush small animals underfoot!"

Christine looked down at Agnes angrily. "What do you know about what I do?"

"G'wan! Beat it! Scram!" Agnes reared back, tail still raised. "Nobody wants you here!"

Axel pointed to Danner's shoes. "His heels are short."

"Don't let 'em fool you." Agnes paced a few steps, looking from one human to the other. "Don't think you're getting away with anything!" she said to them. "I'm watching you every minute! Every step!"

Danner held out his open hands, fingers spread in a staying gesture. "You have my assurance. I'll try nothing funny, Agnes."

"Every step!"

Christine glanced at Danner and shrugged.

Danner met her eye and smiled apologetically. "Your best behavior, right?"

She grimaced at Agnes. "I don't skewer animals on my shoes!"

He stood up with more effort than it had taken to crouch down. The saurs found it fascinating to observe. One of the little ones whispered to another, "Old bones."

Once standing, Danner shook Tom's hand.

"I know this is awkward, considering who I work for."

"Who do you work for?" asked Alphonse, even though he knew the answer.

"Well...," said Danner, blushing.

"He works for Toyco." That was it. Tom said it.

Agnes stopped in her tracks. "What!"

"I know that—" Tom said.

"What!"

"Agnes, please—"

"Yes, I work for Toyco." Danner bent down to address her. "I've nothing to do with those men in the woods." He straightened up and spoke to all the gathered saurs. "I work for Toyco because I have to work somewhere. That's it. What I came with is all I'll leave with. As will Christine. You have my word."

As he said this, Christine looked down, then back toward the end of the driveway, as if gauging the distance between her and the edge of the property.

Agnes was far from the only one to notice.

With the excitement of Danner's arrival, Axel forgot about his loss of the Click Thing.

Temporarily.

In that time, though, Axel introduced Danner to everyone.

Every one.

Axel led Danner everywhere. He was comfortable with him in a way he was comfortable with only a few other humans, like Tom, Dr. Margaret, and Ms. Leahy from the Atherton Foundation.

It was still believed, conventionally, by many humans (though fewer every year), that talking to a saur (or to any other bioengineered life form) was like talking to a clock or to a smart appliance. You don't engage your security system in political discussions or ask your coffeemaker about the World Cup. And you didn't confide in your child's apatosaurus about your spouse's infidelities.

At least, not too often.

Danner, excited, overwhelmed, followed Axel through every introduction. It didn't take long for him to lose track of Christine, leaving her to her own explorations. He talked to the saurs. He talked to Tom.

He even talked to Reggie.

"You're the original Reggie, aren't you? The One-Point-Four. The only real Reggie. Not like all these Reggie-named apps and platforms that are your pale shadows."

Reggie replied, "The original Reggie was not One-Point-Four but, more correctly ascribed, One-Point-Infinity."

Danner remembered enough to know he was right.

"Some say you saved the world, Reggie. You and five very brave young women. I say you did. I'm old enough to remember."

Reggie, uncharacteristically, volunteered a statement. "Many who are older remember nothing."

"They tried to erase you—every little bit of Reggie software. Wipe you clean off the face of the world."

"Responsible governments believed it was necessary. The governments acted responsibly."

"Dammit, Reggie, they tried to kill you!"

In a voice at once unsettling and assuring, he stated, "Reggie remains."

"For that, I am profoundly thankful," said Danner.

Axel introduced Danner to Rotomotoman.

He gave Rotomotoman a deferential bow.

Rotomotoman saluted Danner.

Danner looked into Rotomotoman's huge, rolling eyes.

Rotomotoman looked back and saluted again.

Danner said to Axel, "So you woke up one morning and decided to make a robot."

"Yeah!" Axel glanced at him, then gazed proudly at Rotomotoman.

"You sat down and designed him?"

"Yeah! No! I told Reggie what he should look like." He pointed to Rotomotoman, who saluted him. "Reggie made the pictures and sent them to a place that builds stuff in pieces."

Danner nodded. "They manufacture parts. Components."

"Yeah! And they made all the parts. We put them together!"

"We?"

"Everybody helped! Everybody! Then we found out Rotomotoman's got this shelf—no, a drawer —in him and you put eggs in and it helps hatch 'em! They call it an inkybatter!"

"That's not what they call it!"

Agnes stepped out from behind a chair where she had been not-so-discreetly watching them. "We call it None of Your Damn Business! Got it?"

The house was home to over a hundred saurs—more, as egglings arrived. That was still a secret, at least officially.

"Got it." He nodded slowly. "None of my damn business." Then he saluted Rotomotoman. "Good luck, sir."

Rotomotoman returned the salute.

Axel introduced Danner to the little ones who nearly never uttered a word, and to the egglings, like Guinevere and Leslie.

The egglings fascinated Danner. They had an awareness, perhaps not as complete as their factory/lab-produced parents', some of whom were said to remember their first instant of consciousness (imagine a voice greeting you at the moment of your birth, saying something like: "Good morning. You are now a living organism in a hostile environment. Please lie still until the conveyor belt comes to a complete halt."). They entered the world with open eyes.

He watched the saurs playing Not So Hard (renamed by Agnes, from "Hit 'Em Hard") until his attention was drawn to the "music" coming from the far end of the room.

The Five Wise Buddhasaurs were sitting on the old green couch: Ahmed the triceratops played on a tiny gold-painted plastic saxophone; Dizz, a gray theropod, on clarinet; a hadrosaur named Andre on trumpet; Nina the stegosaur on something that sort of looked like a French horn; and Esteban, the green allosaur, on an oboe. At least, it looked like one the way he held it; it could also have been a flute, though it sounded like neither. They blew into their diminutive instruments, pressed keys and valves and the like, then ran everything through a couple of processors and a synthesizer, so that all the tiny instruments sounded like big instruments.

Big instruments in collision.

Notes issued from little speakers creating a cloud of chaos that floated between floor and ceiling. It had a wild energy, even a poetry. Danner imagined that the first micro-instants after the Big Bang must have sounded something like this: fiery elements too busy escaping extreme compression to interact with each other.

Many saurs simply put up with it. A few actively sought ways to escape it; the rest had been hearing it for so long that it blended into the background of life in the house, akin to the sounds that issued from the vents and the basement generator.

Danner took a seat in an armchair near the couch (after making sure no saurs were sitting there already). He listened a little longer, immersing himself in the polyphony.

With Ahmed playing blee-blee-blee-oh bloop-bloop-bloop; and Dizz playing blatta-blatta-blatta-bleep; and Andre blowing bwaaa-bwaaa-blittip-bip-blooo; and Nina's Err-rrrawww—Err-rrrawww; and Esteban, head bobbing, fidduh-feddah-fidduh-fidduh-feddah-ing away; Danner listened and smiled until his jaw hurt, his left hand raised and at the ready—for what?

He was not so much listening to what the Buddhasaurs were playing but rather to something the "music" led him to, something like highways and trains speeding across every direction of a night sky filled with holiday fireworks frozen in time. He could see the stars gleaming above a bandstand at night, where a ragtag crew of kids played fast-paced songs, banging on drums and old, old guitars until...

...he could smell caramel corn.

And he let his hand slap down on the smooth, polished, resonant mahogany chair arm.

Bomp!

The Buddhasaurs didn't stop playing immediately, but they all turned, simultaneously, and looked at Danner—at his hand against the chair arm, as if the noise were a signal—for what, they didn't know. They were attuned, waiting for the next sound.

So Danner brought his hand down on the chair arm again.

Bomp!

They all ceased playing and, for once, listened. This act alone was enough to seize the attention of the nearby saurs. The Not So Hard opponents halted their game. Saurs stopped talking in mid-statement. Ace, the hadrosaur with the crenellated crest, and his buddies, ambling about on their battery-powered skates, slowed to a halt and listened.

Something different was going on.

Saurs wandered in, from the library and the living room—even the ones who had gone to hide; they raced from all over the house to see what was happening.

Danner tapped on the chair arm some more, not in any relaxed way but with a hard, deliberate tempo: Bomp! Bomp! Bomp! Bomp!

As his left hand tapped out the Bomp!, he tapped out a different pattern with the knuckles of his right hand— dit-dit dit-dit dit-dit dit-dit —so that together the tapping became Bomp! dit-dit Bomp! dit-dit Bomp! dit-dit Bomp! dit-dit....

It was not that the saurs had never heard rhythm before. Rhythm was everywhere, in many different contexts. What made this rhythm different was that it was here, at this moment, not another moment in some faraway studio. This series of regular raps and taps felt specific. It belonged to themall of them—all the saurs, and to Danner, and to Tom, who had been close by but was nearly invisible.

Even to Dr. Margaret, who had just arrived and, having heard it from the driveway, hurried in to see.

Bomp! dit-dit Bomp! dit-dit Bomp! dit-dit Bomp! dit-dit—

They lowered their heads as they played, bobbing with the beat, and took more commanding holds of their instruments. Andre blew a long, clear, unmodulated note—a note finding a space, a shape, a pattern.

One note in isolation is just a sound squared off from its surrounding ambience. Dizz blew another note—not the same one Andre blew but one that, in relation to Andre's, made sense, made two steps on a path, leading somewhere.

Where?

No one knew.

And the not-knowing became exciting.

And Nina joined in. And then Esteban. And Ahmed blew a note that tied together all the other notes.

They were all playing in a key.

And it was the same key.

Nothing like this had ever happened before.

The notes the Buddhasaurs played came together the way nature comes together. It fell within a pattern—but not above bending the pattern a bit here and there.

It was no longer "music."

It was music, plain and simple.

The saurs who crowded into the former dining room and listened to the Bomp! dit-dit Bomp! dit-dit Bomp! dit-dit wanted to join in, and did so with their tails and their feet. Some thumped along with the Bomp! Bomp! Bomp! and some with the dit-dit did-dit did-dit. The more ambitious among them took on both, hitting the floor one way for one part of the beat, another way for the other. Some even added their own accents and flourishes.

Ahmed played a phrase on his sax. A chorus of saurs sang it back to him. Some voices improvised. Others simply cheered.

It was more than celebrating life—it was life.

And Tom, tapping the floor with his foot, tapping with a checker on the doorframe (the Not So Hard game long abandoned), his head bobbing with the tempo, watched all this and wondered: Danner was a Sequencer. He arranged patterns, and those patterns eventually became things, living things. Could it be that in this pattern, this sequence, everything that made the saurs what they were was being recapitulated? Patterns can be represented in letters, or numbers, or colors, or geometrical figures. Or they can be represented in notes, tones, frequencies, modulations...in sound.

Tom stopped tapping along and wondered if he was listening to the saurs' genome, or Danner's—or maybe they were the same.

He wondered if everyone there felt this, excepting maybe Tibor, still sitting in the VOOM! awaiting transit to Tiboria.

And Geraldine, within her lab, doing whatever it was that Geraldine did.

And Christine, who had wandered off, doing whatever it was she was doing.

Christine, who had been all around the first floor by then (including the kitchen and even the litter room), entered the library and stared at Hetman longer than she had intended. She didn't plan to stare at him, but once she did, she could not quite—

"Believe it," said Hetman.

Christine jumped.

"My dear, it's not my hearing that's impaired."

She removed her sunglasses. "I—I didn't mean to—"

"To stare. Yes. I understand."

Christine had maintained a certain distance as she toured the house. She had seen saurs with scars; saurs who walked with a relocated center of gravity due to some old injury, so that they wobbled and swayed. Some had nervous tics; or they trembled at anyone who advanced too quickly, or surprised them. It made her think of—what did they call it? The Island of Lost Toys, Bad Toys, or Forgotten Toys, or something like that. It was storybook stuff, cloying and sentimental.

But Hetman—eyeless, limbless, broken tail tucked to his side—she had never seen anything, any one, like Hetman.

"You don't have to say anything, my dear," said Hetman with a raspy sigh. "I understand."

"It's true," said Veronica, who had maintained her vigil with Hetman all this time. "Many visitors just stare."

"It's—" Christine looked uncomfortable "—I don't think I could ever.... I'm not strong enough."

"Were it only strength, you'd be staring at an empty bed."

"I would beg to die."

"And so I have, many times." Hetman jerked his head as if working out a crick in his neck. "But no. You would not."

"You're wrong," said Christine.

"I understand your skepticism. But trust me to know a few things, though I'm debilitated, encumbered, and belong to a strain of life not associated with fine distinctions. This is not a fine distinction. It is a very basic fact. You would not beg to die, child. You would beg to live."

"Aren't there times when it just needs to end?"

It was a rare thing for Hetman to laugh aloud, but he did then, heartily and generously until little bubbles of moisture formed around each nostril. "It always needs to end. But we won't capitulate. We must stay in the game."

Christine didn't reply. Hetman, attuned to silence, could tell she was unconvinced.

"In the morning," he said, "I feel the warmth of the sun. I can smell flowers and trees; I can smell all the things in this room; I can smell the books, their paper and bindings and ink. And I can hear, through the grace of my friends, great works of literature, imagination, and storytelling." He paused like a practiced speaker. "I even hear your charming voice."

Christine blushed. She fixed her stare on Hetman's moist nostrils.

Hetman continued, "A person says many things in anger and frustration and fear and despair. But you'll stay in the game, not because it's your choice. There is no other choice."

Christine stood there, next to Hetman, angry and ashamed. She reached into her purse and pulled out a tissue, but didn't put it to her eyes, or any part of her face—just clutched it as she bent over Hetman and reached as if to touch his snout.

Agnes bellowed, "Back off!"

Her voice seemed to echo from the rafters, though it obviously came from nearer the floor. "Don't you dare touch him!"

Christine straightened up and looked for where Agnes might be hiding. "Who are you to tell me what to do?"

"Who the hell are you to come here? What do you want?"

"All I want is..." She struggled for a phrase and, with the tissue still in her hand, bent over again and kissed Hetman on the tip of his snout, right between his nostrils.

"I told you—"

"Agnes." Hetman's voice cut through the shock waves. "No need for alarm."

"She—she—" Agnes looked up at Christine indignantly.

Christine, defiant, looked down at Agnes.

"Kissed him," Veronica completed the sentence.

Agnes gagged. "How can you allow anything so unsanitary—"

"My dear Agnes, I assure you I'm quite all right."

Veronica nodded. Agnes averted her stare. She often suspected Veronica of being a little on the simple side.

Christine slipped the tissue into her purse and looked down. A few centimeters from where she stood was a red checker, no doubt left over from the Not So Hard game. With the toe of her shoe she pushed the checker a few more centimeters to the right, then kicked it over to an old, frumpy hassock set before an old, frumpy leather reading chair.

The checker shot back nearly the way it came, landing right in front of Christine's high heels.

Agnes emerged from behind the hassock. "Well?" She looked sternly at Christine.

"Well what?"

"You've seen the elephant. You've seen the freak show. Now get back in your car and leave us alone."

"Agnes," said Hetman, "this young woman is our guest."

"She's not my guest!"

"You're a mean, grumpy old thing!" Christine kicked the checker back. "I can't imagine you as anyone's toy!"

Agnes stopped the advance of the checker with her tail. "Who said I was?" She slapped the checker back to Christine.

"You're a toy!" She kicked the checker back to Agnes.

"So? You're a human!" She kicked the checker back to Christine. "Nothing anyone can do about that."

"Who wants to?" She kicked the checker back to Agnes.

"You, if you had a shred of decency." The checker shot back to Christine.

"You think all humans are horrible." Back to Agnes.

"Haven't been proven wrong yet." Back to Christine.

"Who do you think made you?" This time Christine kicked the checker a little harder, a little faster.

"Who the hell made you?" Agnes "checked" the checker, then sent it back with the same speed with which it had come.

Christine knew she would have to answer, "I don't know," so she said nothing.

Agnes watched and waited.

"You just hate everybody because you're mean and horrible." Christine flicked the checker back.

Agnes whipped her tail to give the checker a little extra spin and altitude. It bounced off Christine's ankle.

"Hey!" Christine winced and bent down to massage the spot where the checker struck.

"You just hate everyone," said Agnes. "Period."

"You're funny-looking." Christine searched to her right for the errant checker. "You've got those stupid plates. What are they for? Good-for-nothing spikes on your tail. And you have that tiny head with a tiny brain inside!"

Hetman and Veronica braced themselves for an outburst. All anyone had to do to set off Agnes was mention the words "brain size."

But there was none. Agnes, very calmly, said to Christine, "If I'm so stupid, it shouldn't be hard to beat me at this silly game."

"What?" Christine picked up the checker. "This?"

"What's the matter? Don't know what it is?"

Christine chuckled. "It's a checker. A piece from a board game."

"Not the way we play it."

Christine rested her hands on her hips. "So, how do you play it?"

"The floor is the playing field." Agnes spoke softly but tersely. "Each side gets twelve pieces. Red starts her pieces on one side of the room, black on the other. You move the pieces by flicking your tail. If you don't have a tail you can use your paw—or your finger. The only time you get more than one shot is when you hit one of your opponent's pieces. That counts as a point and you're allowed to shoot again. The hit piece is out of the game. Score twelve points and you win. The aim is to get all your opponent's pieces off the floor. Understand?"

"Sounds like a stupid game."

"Hmmph. No one will think any worse of you because you can't play it."

The hands on her hips curled into fists. "Who says I can't play?"

"Well, if you've no notion of strategy; no limb-eye coordination; no sense of touch; no understanding of geometric relationships; no knowledge of basic physics—"

"Who says I can't play?"

"I do!"

Christine folded her arms. "Not only can I play, I can beat you like you've never been beaten before!"

"Prove it!"

Christine took a few steps over to the hassock, sat down, shrugged off her jacket, kicked off her shoes, and slid her purse to Veronica. "Watch this," she said to her. Then, to Agnes: "So, where are the rest of my pieces?"

Agnes tapped the floor with her tail: the two stacks of checkers were right there next to the hassock.

Christine nodded. "Where do I set up?"

"The far end of the library. Set 'em up any way you like, as long as they're no more than half a meter from the wall."

"Stupid rules!"

Christine walked to the other side of the room, got on her hands and knees, and arranged her pieces.

Agnes thought she looked more sensible as a quadruped.

While Agnes watched Christine, Ross watched Agnes.

She would be preoccupied with the game for at least half an hour, so he headed off in search of the hidden Click Thing.

2024.04.22 05:23 Leonkennedy8188 The Lost Boys (1987): How is Santa Carla Neverland.

Last Halloween I’ve gotten a chance to watch the cult classic 1987 The Lost Boys. I’ve watch this film whenever the chance I get and never got tired of it. This time I watched it in a different perspective, the theme of the film. We all know that the movie theme is Peter Pan. Instead of pirates being the Villians it’s vampires instead. So while watching it I began to wonder “how is Santa Carla like Neverland?” I narrow down each scene related to location spots of Neverland and what I think is the Native Camp, Mermaid Lagoon, Pirates Cove and Peter’s Hideout.
Grandpa’s Home - Native Camp
The first scene we see Sam, Micheal and their mother at their grandfathers home. The exterior of his home features various wooden sculpture such as one carved as a native chief, steaks on the lawn, dead animals and so on. Native American have always been hunters and gathers, skinning animals for clothes, and carving totems.

Sexy Sax Man Concert - Mermaid Lagoon
Now I know what you’re thinking. “How is the sexy sax man a mermaid?” His not but through out the film I went over thinking where is the symbolism scene of Mermaid Lagoon in Lost Boys? And all I can come across in my head was the sexy sax man concert scene. His background singers were colored hair women, with a unique style. And in the crowd you see people holding balloons. Which in the original Peter Pan story, the mermaids would play with bubbles. Not just that mermaids do sing in legends. So concluding this topic, the concert is Mermaid Lagoon and the sexy sax man is a merman.

Theme park docks - pirates cove.
Now this one is a no brainer. The frog brothers are pirates. When Sam enters the comic book store. You see the frog brothers parents. Oddly looking like John Lennon and Yuko Ono, but there outfits for looking at a different perspective did look like drunk pirates. The frog bothers even later in the film dressing up in camouflage clothes gives off a pirate style dress up.

David’s hide out - The Lost Boys hide out.
We all know the story of Peter Pan and his underground hide out. David his gang hide out in a cave where hotel got sunk in the ground during an earthquake. Just like Peter’s underground hideout.

In summary these scenes and locations are the exact them locations of Neverland just like original JM Barrie’s Peter Pan. In a dark edgy design.
Let me know if there is anything I am missing.
My next theory “grandpa is a half vampire”.

2024.04.11 20:02 JeffreyRBarker [Complete][45K][MM Contemporary Romance]Love by the Lake

I'm looking for feedback on the unedited novella prequel to my published novel, Love on the D-List, which reviewers describe as, "Emotional and laugh-out-loud funny." I haven't written the official blurb yet, but here's a mockup of one:
Sixteen-year-old Theo Young plans to spend his summer in the city playing guitar and convincing his secret crush—another boy—to kiss him. But Theo’s father, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, drags Theo to a redneck campground in Vermont to hangout with an old buddy and his teenage son, Brady. Though Theo and Brady were inseparable for the first four years of their lives, like twins, after Theo’s family moved away, Brady became the gold standard Theo couldn’t measure up to, the perfect son who was not only athletic and popular with girls, but smart, too. Will these two boys find the close bond they shared as young children or will they continue to resent each other?
Here is an excerpt of the first three chapters:
Chapter 1
I cuffed the bottom of my jeans and slid on Uncle James’s old Adidas jacket. It was spectacularly hideous, a prototype that had never made it to production. The body was made of light brown corduroy, and the sleeves were cobalt blue with red stripes down the sides.
I didn’t wear it very often, not wanting to overexpose its garish brilliance. But tonight was a special occasion. Tonight, I was going to Austin Cavanaugh’s party. He’d invited me himself.
There were only a handful of openly gay kids in my school, and none as hot as Austin, who was not only hot, but also class president and captain of the soccer team. We weren’t friends, exactly. But we weren’t strangers, either. We just ran in different circles.
Austin was a jock and a nerd, and all his friends were rich and connected, like Raj Reddy, who spent his summers at his grandparents’ villa in the south of France. I, meanwhile, slummed it with the other lowlifes whose parents couldn’t afford to buy them BMW’s and designer handbags. The only reason I got to attend Worldview Academy was because my uncle dog-sat for a woman on the board of directors.
But things were looking up for me. Austin had recently broken up with Chad Hollister, the second hottest guy in school, and I’d recently gotten my braces off. My star was on the rise, and tonight was going to be epic. I’m talking, like, first kiss and first boyfriend epic.
“Theo, come here,” Dad called from the living room, his voice uncharacteristically animated. “I’ve got something to tell you.”
I rinsed out my mouth and pulled my gaze from the mirror. I’d been too skinny before my recent growth spurt, and now I just looked like a well-dressed hat stand. But my new smile was on point, my new glasses were trendy as fuck, and I was in a band, so all was not lost.
“What?” I said, entering the living room. “I already told you there’s not gonna be any alcohol at the party.”
There was definitely going to be alcohol at the party. Stephanie Wallace’s older brother was bringing two kegs, not that I was planning to drink. I didn’t need alcohol to lower my inhibitions.
Dad smiled and ruffled my hair. “Guess where we’re gonna spend the summer.”
“Uh, right here.” Dad knew my band, Puddle of Heart, had two gigs lined up, not to mention practice every day. He also knew not to touch my hair.
“Guess again. Dave’s mom broke her hip, and she’s lettin’ us use her camper for the whole month of July. It’s already paid for and everythin’.”
“What?”
“You’re gonna love this campground. It’s right on Lake Burnham, and there’s a swimmin’ pool and a miniature golf course. Plus, Dave just bought a motor boat, so we won’t have to fight over who gets to be captain. We can both just sit back and relax. And Brady will be there, so you’ll already have a friend.”
Brady was not my friend. Brady was the opposite of my friend. He was my enemy. Well, maybe not my enemy. He was more like the gold standard I could never measure up to.
Our dads were best friends. And since Brady and I were only two weeks apart in age, we’d spent our whole lives being compared to each other. Apparently, before we’d moved to the city, Brady and I had been inseparable, almost like twins. We’d even napped together in the same crib. But that had been twelve years ago. We were sixteen now and polar opposites.
Brady was athletic, smart, and classically handsome. I was uncoordinated, easily distracted, and goofy-looking. In third grade, while I’d been in remedial reading, Brady had been cruising through chapter books. In middle school, while Brady had been dating girls and going to dances, I’d been playing video games in my best friend’s basement. Now, in high school, I got to hear all about Brady’s game-winning goals and stare at his well-defined muscles in the newspaper clippings Dad stuck to the fridge.
“We can’t go camping,” I said. “I already have plans for the summer.”
“Well, change ‘em.”
“I can’t change them. I’m the guitar player. Without me, there’s no band.”
“It’s only for the month of July. You’ll still have all of August to screw around in Baxter’s basement.”
“We don’t screw around.” Dad never took Puddle of Heart seriously.
“Come on, I thought you’d be excited. Don’t you wanna get to know your roots? We can even take a trip to see the old house.”
“I can’t go, Dad. I can’t do that to my bandmates. I made a commitment.”
Dad’s smile vanished, and my stomach twisted. Dad rarely smiled these days.
“But you should still go,” I said, hating the sullen look on his face. “I’ll just stay here with Uncle James.”
“You can’t. Jimmy’s goin’, too. Come on, it’s gonna be fun. We gotta make these memories while we still can. And you were born in Vermont. It’s in your blood.”
Dad’s words brought the sting of tears to my eyes, but I was too mad to cry. How could he do this to me? How could he ruin my summer and then use his illness to guilt-trip me into not being upset about it?
“I know it’s not what you had planned. But sometimes, the best things in life come from ruined plans, from takin’ a chance on somethin’ new.”
I was too angry to respond, so I pulled out my phone and checked Instagram, which was already full of pictures from the party. “Is Uncle James around? He said he’d give me a ride.”
“I’m right here,” Uncle James said, strolling into the room. He stopped when he saw the looks on our faces and sighed. “You ready?”
“Yeah, let’s go.”
Chapter 2
After ten minutes of awkward silence, Uncle James cleared his throat and said, “Can’t you just pretend to be excited?”
“No, the band needs me.”
“So does your dad.”
I gritted my teeth and stared out the window. Neither of us spoke for the rest of the drive.
Dad had early-onset Alzheimer’s, and his symptoms were starting to get worse. Not send-him-to-the-nursing-home worse, but this-is-really-happening worse. Like, he’d forget what you just said to him, or he’d put all the dishes away in the wrong places.
“Call me when you need a ride home,” Uncle James said as he pulled up to Austin’s white-bricked mansion.
“Okay.” I climbed out of Uncle James’s 4Runner, a hand-me-down from one of his celebrity clients, and smiled. My first high school party!
Unfortunately, the first person I encountered was Raj Reddy, my freshman year lab partner.
“What are you doing here?” Raj asked from Austin’s gigantic foyer. Seriously, Austin’s entryway was bigger than our entire apartment.
Like Austin, Raj was a super-hot soccer boy. But unlike Austin, Raj was a dick. The guy hated me. We’d been lab partners freshman year, and he blamed me for the erlenmeyer flask exploding. And, yes, maybe I should’ve removed the stopper when he’d asked me to. But, to be fair, the scar on Raj’s neck was barely visible anymore.
“Austin invited me,” I said, smiling at Raj like we were best friends.
“You know he only invited you to make Chad jealous, right? He invited Mario Alvarez, too.”
Hmm, interesting. Competition. But that was okay. I could handle this. I was just as hot as Mario Alvarez. And way taller.
“I’m not trying to get with Austin,” I said.
“Good, because it’s never going to happen.”
I really hoped Raj was wrong. Austin Cavanaugh was the perfect guy to lose my kissing virginity to. He was hot, nice, and always chewing gum.
Granted, I could’ve lost my kissing virginity ages ago. Loads of girls wanted to make out with me. Cecee Reynolds once said I had amazing eyes. But I didn’t want my first kiss to be with a girl. My ancestors weathered centuries of violence, marched in pride parades, and watched eight seasons of Will and Grace so I wouldn’t have to pretend to like girls. Sure, Baxter said he’d kiss me, but I didn’t want my first kiss to be with a straight boy, either. I wanted my first kiss to be passionate and steamy.
Raj left me, muttering something under his breath—probably tender endearments—and I spotted Chelsea Matthews in the living room with her clique of popular girls. Chelsea and I weren’t exactly friends, either, but she played trumpet in the jazz band, and I played guitar, so close enough.
“Theo, what are you doing here? I didn’t know you went to parties.” Chelsea raised her red plastic cup in greeting. “You want a beer?”
“I’m good, thanks.” If I was kissing Austin tonight, I needed to keep my wits about me.
As if reading my mind, Austin strode into the room and asked, “Who wants to play seven minutes in heaven?”
Fuck yeah! Chelsea and the girls were just as excited as I was, and Austin went about setting the ground rules, explaining his twist on the classic game.
“Okay, so here’s how we’re going to do it. I’ll pick a name at random from this bowl, and whoever I pick will go into the closet and wait. Once inside, I’ll pick a second name, and that person, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, will join the first person in the closet for exactly seven minutes. But here’s the twist. Instead of both people leaving at the end of seven minutes, the second person will stay behind and wait for a new name to be drawn. And then the process will start over from there. Get it?”
“Wait, so fourteen minutes in heaven, then?” Chelsea asked.
“Yeah, exactly. This way, each person will get one make out partner who’s a total surprise.”
Kylie Rodrigo’s name was pulled first, and she stepped into the closet with a nervous giggle. I liked Kylie. She played baritone sax, the sexiest sax. But that didn’t mean I wanted to be trapped in a closet with her. Kylie was a huge gossip, and I didn’t want to have to explain to her that I was saving myself for Austin.
Luckily, the next name drawn was Raj’s, which couldn’t have been a coincidence. Everyone knew Raj had a thing for Kylie. Austin must have rigged the game, which boded well for me, especially since Mario wasn’t even playing.
Seven minutes later, Kylie emerged, her hair a disheveled mess, and everyone laughed.
“Next up is”—Austin made a show of slowly unfolding the paper—“Theo.”
Okay, interesting. But there was no need to panic. Probably, in seven minutes, Raj would leave and Austin would draw his own name.
“Is this some kind of sick joke?” Raj asked the moment I stepped into the surprisingly roomy closet.
“If it is, I forgot to knock. But feel free to ask who’s there anyway.” The door closed and we were plunged into inky darkness.
“I’m not making out with you,” Raj said. “And it’s not because I’m a homophobe. I just don’t like you.”
“Really? Because I’m in love with you. I think we might be soulmates. Please, let me prove it to you with sweet, tender kisses.”
“Fuck off.”
I slumped against the wall opposite Raj and let several minutes of awkward silence pass. But since silence and I weren’t exactly simpatico, I couldn’t help asking, “So, any big plans for the summer? I assume you’re going to your grandparents' villa in the south of France, where you’ll eat foie gras and drink Champagne with a capital C.” Raj was always bragging about his summers in France.
“That’s right. And I assume you’re going to stick around here and help your dad clean out porta potties, maybe refill the hand sanitizer?”
“He doesn’t clean them out. He’s the manager.” If Raj was trying to make me ashamed of my dad, he was shit out of luck. Sure, my dad wasn’t an investment banker or the CEO of some huge multinational corporation, but he was a good dad and a published author.
The timer went off a couple minutes later, and Raj bolted from the closet.
“Thanks for rocking my world, Raj. You’ve got a magic mouth.” I made sure to project my voice so everyone could hear.
The door closed behind him, and I licked my lips, readying myself for Austin. But when the door opened again, it wasn’t Austin who stepped into the closet, but Chelsea Matthews. What the fuck?
“Hey Theo, it’s me, Chelsea.”
“Hey,” I managed to say as all my fantasies came crashing down around me.
Chelsea used the glow of her cell phone screen to light her way over to the wall I was leaning against. “If it turns out Raj is a better kisser, I’m going to need you to lie and tell everyone he’s not, okay?”
“We actually just sat here in silence for seven minutes. But I’ll happily lie for you.”
“Really? I figured you’d be all over that. You’re gay, right?”
“Yeah, super gay.”
Everyone at school knew I was gay. It was only my family who didn’t. It wasn’t that I thought my dad would disown me or send me to conversion therapy. Dad wasn’t like that. Uncle James was gay, and he and Dad were best friends.
I just didn’t want Dad to feel left out or to think I loved Uncle James more. Ever since Dad had started getting sick, Uncle James had started taking over his parental responsibilities, going to my parent teacher conferences, taking me to doctor's appointments, stuff like that. He’d even become my legal guardian.
It wasn’t that I didn’t love Uncle James like a dad. I did. But Dad was my dad, and I didn’t want to give him another excuse to pull away.
“We don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to,” Chelsea said. “We can just sit here and talk.”
“Really? That would be awesome!” I sighed heavily and let my head thud against the wall.
Chelsea laughed. “Jeez, you don’t have to sound so happy about it.”
“No, it’s not like that. I’m sure kissing you would be awesome. You’re a really good trumpet player, so you must have amazing lips. Like, seriously, was that a high D you hit the other day?”
“E, but close enough.”
“Exactly, and you probably have fruity lip gloss and good breath. I’ve just never kissed anyone before, and I was kinda hoping my first time would be with another dude.”
“You’ve never kissed anyone before? Oh my god, that’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever heard.”
“No, it’s pathetic.”
“Of course it’s not pathetic. It’s romantic. But why did you want to play seven minutes in heaven if you didn’t want to kiss anyone?”
“I don’t know,” I lied.
“Wait, were you hoping it would be Austin and not me?”
“No, of course not.” Man, I was such a liar. It was a wonder my pants didn’t spontaneously ignite.
“Well, I think you two would make a cute couple, way cuter than Austin and Chad.”
I pictured Austin and I sitting shoulder to shoulder at the same lunch table, glad it was pitch black in the closet so Chelsea couldn’t see me blushing.
“Can you not mention the whole kissing virgin thing to anyone?” I asked. “It’s kinda embarrassing.”
“Of course not. Your secret is safe with me. And there is no reason to be embarrassed. You only get one first kiss, right?”
“Right!” Finally, someone who got it. Most of my friends were in a race to collect as many sexual experiences as they could, like they were in some kind of x-rated Easter egg hunt.
A few minutes later, the timer went off, and I wished Chelsea better luck with her next partner and headed for the door. The moment I opened it, I came face to face with Oscar Montague III, Chelsea’s ex-boyfriend.
“Hey Oscar—“
Oscar’s fist made contact with my face, and I staggered back against the doorframe. I’d never been punched before, and it took me a minute to figure out what had happened. My whole face throbbed. My eyes watered. And my nose ran. Was that blood?
“What the fuck, Oscar? We’re not together anymore,” Chelsea screamed. “And Theo and I didn’t do anything. He’s saving himself for Austin.”
“Are you okay?” someone asked, and my vision cleared just enough to watch Austin drop Mario’s hand and rush towards the closet. And here I thought this moment couldn’t get any worse.
I didn’t know how to answer Austin’s question, so I reached up and removed my glasses. Yup, they were definitely broken. Fuck. Dad was going to kill me.
***
I wasn’t blind without my glasses, but pretty damn close. I made a dash for the bathroom and tripped over something, a foot perhaps. I stumbled, trying to catch myself, but I was all arms and legs, like a newborn horse, and I collided with the wall. Glass shattered and rained down on the floor. At first, I thought I’d crashed into a picture on the wall. But, no, it was a fucking mirror. Wasn’t the seven years of bad luck supposed to start after you broke the mirror?
“Oh, shit,” Austin said. He’d been trailing after me, trying to wipe up the trail of blood I was leaving behind. But at the sight of the broken mirror, he froze and started hyperventilating.
“You’re such a fucking menace, Theo.” Raj took my arm and guided me towards the bathroom.
“It’s okay,” I said, swallowing thick globs of blood. “I’ll buy him a new mirror. I just gotta clean up first.” I hurried into the bathroom, and Raj closed the door behind me. Fat crimson drops fell from my nose and plopped onto the white porcelain counter.
Thirty minutes later, after Oscar had been kicked out and Chelsea had promised to hook me up with her mom’s plastic surgeon, I sat on the wall outside next to the stone buttress of a lion and waited for Uncle James to pick me up.
Austin came out and kicked nervously at the bark chips surrounding the rose bushes. “How are you feeling?”
“I wasn’t really saving myself for you, you know. I just didn’t want my first kiss to be with a girl or a straight guy. And I’m really happy for you and Mario. Mario is the coolest. And I’ll get you a new mirror, so don’t worry about that. Just tell me where your mom got it.”
“That’s okay. Raj looked it up, and it’s, like, fifteen hundred dollars.”
If my eyes weren’t swollen shut, they probably would’ve bugged out like some cartoon character’s. What the fuck? I only had five hundred in savings, and that wouldn’t even cover half of it.
“Okay, well, I can give you five hundred now and the rest later.” Raj was right. I was going to have to spend my summer cleaning porta potties.
“Don’t worry about it. I know money’s tight for you, and that your dad is—”
“It’s fine. I’ll figure it out.” I refused to be Austin’s charity case. He may not have wanted to kiss me, but he had invited me to his party, and that wasn’t nothing.
Austin looked like he wanted to argue the point, but he held back. “I hear Puddle of Heart is playing at the summer carnival this year.”
I was surprised Austin remembered my band’s name. Other than last year’s variety show, we’d never played out before. “Not anymore. My dad is dragging me up to Vermont for the entire month of July.”
“Really? That sucks.”
“Tell me about it.”
Uncle James’s 4Runner tore up the drive, and he jumped out, ready for a fight. “Where is the little shit?”
“Relax, he’s not here anymore.” I stood and tried to give Austin back the ice pack.
“Keep it,” he said, giving me a weak smile. At least, I assumed it was a weak smile. Without my glasses, I couldn’t really tell.
Chapter 3
I liked to get up early on Sundays and make brunch, and today was no exception. I couldn’t see very well. Blood from my broken nose had drained into dark sacks under my eyes, and my glasses were busted. But I still managed to whip up a quiche with the meager offerings from our fridge—spinach, mushrooms, garlic, and copious amounts of feta. I also made monkey bread and fruit smoothies.
I was just finishing up when Esther, Uncle James’s best friend, arrived.
“I brought the—” Esther’s jaw went slack, and the champagne in her hand fell to her side. “What happened?”
“Nothing, I just—“
“He got caught hookin’ up with some other dude’s girl.” Dad squeezed my shoulder as he walked past. He sounded proud.
“Do I need to bail James out of jail?” Esther asked.
“No, he’s in his room,” I said. “Oscar was long gone by the time Uncle James got there.”
“Oscar, eh? What’s his last name?”
“I’m not telling you.”
Esther shrugged, and the sly uptick of her mouth said she didn’t need Oscar’s last name to track him down. She was a reporter, after all. Well, really more of a tabloid journalist, but same difference.
Uncle James came out a few minutes later, and his face contorted in anger the moment he saw my matching pair of black eyes, which looked badass as fuck. They were all dark and colorful like an oil slick.
We managed to make it all the way through brunch without talking about the party or camping in Vermont. But the moment Uncle James and Esther went to get some fresh air on the roof—read, smoke weed—Dad pounced.
“Brady's girlfriend might be hangin’ with us some, too, so now you’ll have two friends up in Vermont.”
“Great! I’ve always wanted to be Brady’s third wheel. Maybe he’ll let me hold his girlfriend’s purse and take pictures of them making out.”
Dad sighed, and guilt stabbed into my gut.
“I guess we don’t have to—“
“No, we’re going,” I said. “You haven’t seen Dave in almost a year, and I’m sure I can teach Priyanka a watered-down version of the guitar parts.”
“You sure?”
I wasn’t sure, but I nodded.
“Who knows, you might meet someone up there,” Dad said. “Did I ever tell you about the summer I went to basketball camp and—“
“Yes, like a thousand times.”
Dad held up his hands and took a step back. “Okay, sorry.”
***
They didn’t call Vermont the Green Mountain State for nothing. The whole place was just one big mountain range. Everywhere you looked, there were trees. Though, not just trees. There were also stone walls, dandelions, cemeteries, old white churches with old white steeples, dead deer on the side of the road, horses, cows, and corn that was supposed to be knee high by the fourth of July. But you know what there wasn’t? Reliable cell phone service.
It was late afternoon when we pulled into the campground, and I had to piss like a racehorse.
“You checkin’ us in?” Dad asked as I bolted from the car.
“No, I gotta pee.” I made a beeline for the bathroom. When I came out, Uncle James was standing at the counter, talking to someone.
No longer about to piss myself, I took in the breezy lobby, which sold concessions—popcorn, pizza, and ice cream sandwiches. A door led out to the pool, where families screamed and splashed about.
“There’s no alcohol or glass bottles allowed in the pool area,” the guy behind the counter was saying, and I froze, recognizing his voice.
I stepped around a loud box fan and peered over Uncle James’s shoulder. No fucking way! I had to be hallucinating. “Raj? What are you doing here?”
Raj Reddy met my gaze, and a symphony of emotions played across his face—surprise, fear, anger, annoyance, embarrassment—before settling on one that could best be described as you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.
“You two know each other?” Uncle James asked.
“Yeah, Raj goes to my school,” I said. “We used to be lab partners.”
At the mention of lab partners, Raj touched the faint scar on his neck.
“Wait, is this the kid you sent to the emergency room because you’re a dumbass?”
There was no use denying it, so I said, “Yup, and he’s never forgiven me for it.”
This was too weird. Raj was supposed to be in the south of France, not working concessions at a white-trash campground in northern Vermont.
“You’re in D12,” Raj said through gritted teeth, marking the spot on a black and white map of the campground. “The road is one way, though, so you’ll have to drive around the long way to get there.”
I stopped listening and escaped back to the car. This had to be the mirror’s doing. Luck didn’t get this bad without help. But, on the bright side, I only had six years and eleven months left to go.
Uncle James slid back in the driver’s seat a few minutes later and smirked at me in the rearview mirror. “Did Theo tell you he already has a friend here?” he asked Dad.
“He’s not my friend.”
“What?” Dad turned to look at me.
“He’s just someone I go to school with. We barely know each other.” This was terrible. What if Raj told Dad and Uncle James I was gay?
“It’s the kid Theo sent to the emergency room two years ago. Apparently, his grandparents own the place,” Uncle James said. “They bought it five years ago.”
“What are the chances of that?” Dad asked.
“Can we please just go,” I said. “I gotta get dinner started.”

2024.04.11 11:10 byPCP AMA I am Werkout Wolf from FoFoFadi

What's up Lido fans! I'm Werkout Wolf!
I'm sure some of you saw my post a few months ago about unreleased FoFo demos, and I'm here to just come clean and answer any questions about this incredible project!

Some background!

I'd followed FoFoFadi for years and got obsessed with Jersey Club. I posted this Drake flip on a random ass alias "Loony Lion" after I saw a tweet from the FoFoFadi account talking about potentially recruiting new members. I got a DM from the FoFo account a couple weeks later asking about me, the track, and ultimately asked me to make more demos for a project called Shampoo Puppy. They heard the demos and it was clear I was more inclined to making club music (Shampoo Puppy was supposed to be all Drake trap flips), so they asked me if I wanted to audition for Werkout Wolf, which was supposed to be based on 80s-90s music. I obliged and immediately went crazy. I went back to my old high school and asked a friend who taught cheerleading there to have her girls record the Werkout Wolf tag. Then I ripped the FoFoFadi tag from a Trippy Turtle song and banged out BYE BYE BYE and FOFO PARTY in about a week. Spoiler alert: I was not a good producer back then haha.

I didn't hear from them for 2 weeks! Day of Trippy Turtle's last show in LA, I went to a FoFo sponsored beach cleanup and met up with Baile Bear and Drippy Dolphin and talked about the show later that night and the demos I'd sent. I didn't hear from them again, so I went to the show as planned with my homie with GA tickets, and I saw them about to get on stage and fought security guards until Drippy saw me (thank god, bless her heart) and brought us up. We watched the whole show, which was incredible! And right at the end of Trippy's set, the animals came on and played MY DEMOS! Most surreal moment in my life. My tracks had the Werkout Wolf tag and FoFo tags so Lido was like "who the fuck made this???" and they brought me over to him for a hug. Top 5 moment in life haha. After a while, Baile sat down with me and said "you are in, my guy".

After that it was a lot of work developing the character, the costume, EPKs, playing shows in the LA and SD areas. I learned DJ'ing on the fly over the years and poured all my hours into being a real Jersey Club DJ. I was a 20ish year old kid with no clue what I was doing. Got to DJ with some Jersey legends and the FoFo guys who are still my friends to this day. Honestly the best time of my life!

I was, and still am, a total nobody. I'm a lifelong classically trained musician, producing music for 15 years now so it's all so surreal to look back on this whole thing. I played drum set & tenor sax in jazz and marched snare drum in drum corps for most of my life - huge reason Lido and I clicked on the FoFo sound. Everyone involved with the FoFoFadi project are incredible musicians in different fields and that's what made it come life! You might be surprised to hear some of these dudes don't even have their own projects (like me).

I just turned 28 so I beat the 27 club! I posted a DJ Tool/Remix Tape of shit I've worked on from the last year or so that wasn't FoFo related. It's an absolute mess, but if you're curious what a FoFo artist like me has done outside of FoFo, that's here. There's FoFo stuff in the beginning area there, but the real Lido-esque stuff is around that 31 minute mark. Track list too!

I don't know what level of proof I realistically need for this AMA (considering it's such a small community here with little moderation) but I can provide whatever's needed. I may be the only guy from FoFo who even knows what reddit is lol.

I know this project ended abruptly for everyone. Even me! I'd love to answer any questions you guys have about FoFo. I won't name names that you don't already know, just cause that'd be lame (that's the fun of Fofo).

Conceptual formations: Valerie Oliveiro and Jennifer Monson. move thing is a community-based dance project proposing that the multi-sensory, improvisatory, and choreographic structures of dance contribute to reparative projects in communities that have historically been impacted by toxic contamination due to resource extraction (Uranium and coal mining) and industrial effluents (chemicals, particulates, carbon monoxide, and heavy metals). Resisting all forms of purity, the work proposes that we are all constantly, inherently, and unevenly making up each other and all other animate and inanimate beings. If we imagine ourselves as soluble, always dissolving and reconstituting choreographically, could we move through toxicity and be with and/or absorb toxicity and find new / alternative / old / transformative relationships to its states / tendencies / behaviors / effects / violences / shifts? Could we find intelligences within our bodies and abilities to connect more deeply with the mechanisms for survival and support in sites and systems that we are a part of? move thing is supported, in part, by the Challenge America grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Campus Research Board’s award from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and the Puffin Foundation

2024.04.07 02:51 Quirky-Motor In March of 1996, 12 year old, double amputee Julie Harris disappeared while walking to neighbors home to get a ride to church. Despite a few sightings and two viable suspects what actually happened to Julie remains unclear.

Background
In 1996 12-year-old Julie Harris was in the 7th grade. She was a happy and athletic girl who participated in downhill skiing and swimming. She lived in the small town of Colville, Washington with her mother Sherri and her two brothers- 10 year old Clifford, and 7 year old George. The children had different fathers and none of the men were involved in the children's lives, at least as far as I can tell. Sherri was however in a long-term relationship with a man named Don Sax who had been her live-in boyfriend since 1994. Despite her young age Julie's life was far from carefree. Julie had a blood disorder which was diagnosed when she was less than 2 years old and as a result her feet and lower legs had to be amputated. From then on Julie wore prosthetic feet and sometimes used braces or a wheelchair to get around. Despite her physical limitations Julie remained an active child who was involved in Special Olympics Sports. She was pretty independent and friends and family remember that Julie was able to get around without her prosthetics if needed, sometimes removing them around new people just to get a laugh. The family hadn't always lived in Colville and in the past they had lived in Coos Bay, Oregon and Spokane, Washington, having family and friends and all three places.
Disappearance
In March of 1996 Julie seemed to be having a bit of a rough patch. Julie, who was usually happy, funny, and remembered as a prankster, had seemed more moody and withdrawn than normal, something her mother attributed to puberty and growing up. For the first time Julie was feeling self-conscious about her prosthetic feet especially as she and her friends entered their teen years and started to become more interested in boys and dating. Additionally Julie’s grades had begun to drop.
On the night of Saturday, March 2nd, 1996 Julie quarreled with Don Sax over her grades and school work. Julie was unable to participate in sports if she had Fs at school and was upset when Don and Sherri told her she may not be able to participate in an upcoming ski event. Julie, upset, went to her room and then went to bed. Julie’s brother Clifford was slated to participate in a ski event in the town of Wenatchee that weekend and Sherri went with him. It is unclear if Sherri and Clifford left the morning of the 3rd before they saw Julie, or if they left on the 2nd. Either way, a few early reports say that Julie was last seen on the evening of March 2nd. The next morning, a Sunday, Don Sax left the home to go fishing, he reported that Julie was in her bedroom. Where Don went to fish, who he was with, and how long he was gone for have never been publicly released. When Julie was not home when family members returned a few hours later, a missing person’s report was filed and Julie was listed as a runaway. Police speculated that Julie, upset with Don or her mother, decided to run away to either Coos Bay or Spokane where she had lived previously and had family. The report noted that Julie had set her alarm for early in the morning, gotten dressed, packed four slices of pizza, and left the home.
Sherri drove to Spokane and checked in with relatives there hoping to find Julie, but Julie wasn't there. At this point Julie’s family created missing person flyers and her grandparents offered a reward for information. Police received a few tips and sightings and a few articles ran in the newspaper asking for information.
Despite the initial reporting, most modern articles report a slightly different story. They claim that Julie was last seen on the 3rd of March, not only by Don Sax but also by neighbors who reported that Julie was walking to church. Julie would walk to the neighbors home down the street and the neighbors would drive her to the Kettle Falls Assembly of God congregation every week, but that week she never arrived. This narrative is supported by a runaway report as apparently Julie left the home wearing a black skirt and a pink and black sweater which seems like a church outfit. Neighbors saw her walking that day and one even reported to the police that they saw Julie speaking with a slim man that morning wearing a trenchcoat on Main Street. Another person called the police department to report seeing a girl matching Julie’s description in Bend, Oregon. In this sighting the girl was in a wheelchair which Julie used on occasion but this girl was never located. Sadly, within only a few days, Julie’s case faded from the spotlight.
One month after Julie’s disappearance on April 9th, 1996 a beachcomber called the police and after a search, police announced that Julie’s purse and prosthetic feet were found on the banks of the Colville River near where it flows into Lake Roosevelt, other items found in the search have never been made public. At this time Julie’s case was reclassified from runaway to endangered.
Persons of Interest
Within days police moved their focus inward to Sherri and Don Sax. Don was questioned numerous times by the police and Sherri told the newspaper that the police were trying to “frame” him. Eventually Don retained an attorney on the advice of Sherri. Meanwhile, police announced that Don had become “person of interest.” Sherri had a hard time accepting this and claimed that Julie and Don got along well. Recently she told a podcast that Julie had a better relationship with Don than her sons did and Julie affectionately called Don “zteddy Bear.” Despite this announcement the story yet again faded into obscurity.
If law enforcement wasn’t suspicious before, by May 1996 their interests peaked once again when CPS received a call that Don Sax had assaulted Clifford, Julie’s brother. After an interview with the boy it was determined that after arguing with Clifford over his homework, Don restrained Clifford by the neck and kneed him in the thigh resulting in a large bruise. Don claimed that Clifford had punched his mother in the chest and when Sherri called for Don, he grabbed Clifford but did not hurt him, Don attested that the bruise on Clifford’s thigh came from a bicycle accident. According to the couple, because Sherri had physical disabilities of her own and because Clifford was already larger than her, Clifford was able to overpower his mom. Don was charged and went to court for facing a 4th degree assault charge. He moved out of the home for a few months but is unclear if he faced any additional consequences. Both George and Clifford were removed from the home and placed in foster care, at least briefly. Sherri more or less backed up Don’s version of events and sticks to this story even today decades after her split from Don. Still Julie’s disappearance remained a mystery.
One year after her feet and purse were found, in April of 1997 Julie's remains were found by children in the vicinity of Haller Creek Road and Riedel Creek Road about six miles south of Colville. Her remains were spread over about an acre, presumably from animal activity. She had not been buried and no obvious trauma was found on her bones. Nevertheless her case was classified as a homicide. Police still maintained that Don was the best person of interest but nothing definitive ever tied him to Julie’s death or disappearance.
Sherri and Don stayed together for a while but split several years after. Sherri and Don are still in contact and occasionally speak on the phone although Sherri reports that she hasn't seen him in several years. Sherri still maintains that Don would not have hurt Julie and now believes that someone else was responsible for Julie's disappearance. While rumors still float around the internet regarding his involvement, Don Sax has flown under the radar since 1997.
In 2012 a new surge of publicity befell Julie's case when a serial killer named Israel Keyes was arrested. As some readers may know Israel Keyes grew up in the town of Colville and in 1996 he was 18 years old. After being caught for a murder in Anchorage, Alaska, Keyes was interviewed by law enforcement. Keyes reported to that while he remembered the case of Julie's disappearance from his teen years, he says that he didn't have anything to do with it. Strangely, he then goes on to say that he didn't kill any children after his first child was born. But in 1996 Keyes was not yet a father. When confronted with this discrepancy he says nothing.
Besides location, a few other details link Keyes to this crime. In one CBS special one of Julie's friends is interviewed and she tells the interviewer that she and Julie casually knew Keyes, sometimes chatting with him at the public pool. Julie's friend reported in this interview that she and Julie gave Keyes their phone numbers and addresses, something they both kept hidden from their parents. Additionally Keys matches the description of a young thin man wearing a trench coat seen talking to Julie that morning on main street. People who knew Israel Keys as a teenager reported that he was awkward, especially around girls, but Sherri fears that her daughter who was self-conscious about her prosthetic feet, may have relished any attention from an older boy especially as she entered her teen years. When shown a picture of a teenage Keyes, Sherri reported that he looked familiar and she thought that Julie and he had mutual friends, which wouldn’t be too far fetched in a town of less than 5,000 people.
Unfortunately Israel Keys never gave investigators any more information regarding Julie Harris and to this day it's unknown if he was involved, but many law enforcement agencies think it's possible that Julie Harris was an early victim of Keyes. As of 2020, Keyes remains a “person of interest” in Julie’s case. Even with two “persons of interest” Julie’s case remains cold and unsolved. If you have any information on the death of Julie Harris you can contact the Stevens County Sheriff's Office at 509-684-5296. What happened to double amputee Julie Harris?
