Mr. A. J. Doherty, former State Senator, one time member of the State Board of Agricultural and a former director of the Michigan State fair, has completed the best hotel in this part of the state and it is now open to the public. The formal opening is to take place on the evening of May 12th, when the Clare Chamber of Commerce are to give a complimentary banquet to Mr. and Mrs. Doherty, by which the citizens of Clare hope, in a small measure at least, to show appreciation to the man who has done so much for his “own home town”. The banquet will have to be limited to 150 persons and will include some of Mr. and Mrs. Doherty’s friends from different parts of the state and the members of the Chamber of Commerce of Clare. This is to be one of the most elaborate banquets ever held in this part of the state. No expense will be spared and all the plans are in keeping with this beautiful building, which Mr. Doherty has built, not for the financial returns he expects to reap, but rather as a testimonial of his good will toward the community. Three years ago the Clare Chamber of Commerce purchased the site on which had been located for many years the popular “Calkins House”, but which had been destroyed by fire. The consideration was $6,000 and they presented this site to Mr. Doherty with the understanding and agreement that he erect a hotel costing at least $60,000 on that site. Mr. Doherty has gone many times beyond that amount and erected a four story steel, brick and terra cotta structure which is modern in every way and fireproof. An Otis elevator, display rooms for traveling salesmen, complete laundry, billiard room cafeteria, which opened April first, dining room, ballroom, radio, mezz-nine floor, room for two mercantile establishments and spacious quarters for the public library that have been donated by Mr. Doherty are among the features housed under one roof. The equipment throughout the structure is of the very latest and best. The lighting fixtures are exceptionally fine. There are 60 guests rooms, each containing hot and cold running water, and several suites. Thirty-six of the single rooms afford either a tub or shower bath. The furniture is walnut and mahogany and blends neatly with the interior mahogany finish throughout the building. The main floors are of terrazzo. The corridors and the floors of the rooms are of music and are covered with beautiful rugs. All dishes, towels and linen are stamped with the “Hotel Doherty” monogram. More than 100 guests can be accommodated at one time.
When Mr. and Mrs. Doherty came to Clare from New York state in 1878, they had very little money. He engaged in the mercantile business in rather a small way and purchased a home for which he was to pay $750. of this amount he was able to pay $250 down and the balance he paid in installments. He succeeded in business and in 1901 he was elected to the State Senate from the 28th district, and in 1903 he was re-elected and again in 1905. some time later he was appointed a member of the State Board of Agriculture to succeed C. J. Monroe, of South Haven. He took an active interest in the affairs of the Michigan State fair while he was a director. In the senate he was known as “Bellwether” Doherty for his possession of great political sagacity and the added fact that he led the senate roll call, considerations which gave him much influence. He has built eight business blocks and many residences in Clare and has stood ready at any time to do anything to advance the best interests of his town. Residents of Clare are free in their assertions that for its size, there is no better hotel in the state.

The banquet given by the Clare Chamber of Commerce in honor of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Doherty and the formal opening of the “Hotel Doherty” Monday evening, May 12, is now a matter of history, but will never be forgotten by those who were privileged to attend. No expense or pains had been spared to make this event a complete success. Promptly at the appointed hour, the orchestra under the leadership of Robert Heisman of Midland, began playing and the guests were admitted to the dining room. This room, however was not large enough to take care of the one hundred and sixty-eight guests who were present, and a table had been placed in the lobby so all could be accommodated. The dining room was decorated with palms and ferns together with beautiful silk American flags. The tables were graced with sprays of smilax and large bouquets of carnations. These decorations were in charge of Walter Caple, of Mt. Pleasant, and his work was well and capably done. The food was excellent and well served. The music of the orchestra was enjoyed, especially the old plantation songs many of which the guests joined in singing these in company with the music. Following the serving of the banquet, W. S. McAllister, President of the Board of Commerce, at the beginning of his talk, got himself in right with the ladies present, by calling them beautiful and got in wrong with the men, especially those in dress suits, by calling them ordinary and commonplace. He spoke of the disappointment and discouragement which prevailed in Clare at the time the old Calkins House burned and of the many plans proposed only to be abandoned until Mr. A. J. Doherty undertook the task of erecting this beautiful building. He paid tribute to Mr. Doherty and expressed the appreciation of the Chamber of Commerce and the citizens of Clare. In his usual happy and witty manner “Mac” then introduced Judge Ray Hart, of Midland, as toastmaster for the evening. Judge Hart has appeared in this capacity in Clare before, but never has he or any one else filled that position so acceptably as Judge hart did at this banquet. In his remarks, he spoke of the success of men which often can be attributed in a large measure to the inspiration, faith and co-operation of their good wives and then introduced Rev. H. B. Johnson, who spoke briefly of Clare, the best town, and on behalf of the Board of Commerce, presented a large bouquet of roses to Mrs. Doherty. Although it was a complete surprise to her, she responded in a very wonderful manner, and emotion ran high when she told how she appreciated the love and sympathy of her friends and neighbors expressed by this gift.
Mr. Perry Shorts, vice-president of the Second National Bank, of Saginaw, and graduate of the University of Michigan law school, then responded to the toast, “The successful American Business Man”. His address was a masterpiece. He said, “We hear eulogies of ministers, scientists, statesman and others but seldom does any one speak of the common American business man. He is looked upon as hard headed and coldblooded, but his success is so important to all of us that it is well to consider those qualities which will make him succeed. He must have commanding will power and any man or any army with a fixed determination will win. The successful business man will have a good supply of labor. Hard work is the key used by wealthy men, scientist, surgeons, lawyers and statesmen to unlock success. Good citizenship is one qualification and this means love for country, state and own home town. He obeys the laws and respects the rights of others. Honesty is the foundation of good citizenship. The ideal man of today is a man of good character. A man is at his best when he is lifting his fellow men to a higher and better position of living. We often say that credit is the basis of business, but character is the foundation of credit.” He spoke of the spiritual things, which, while they are invisible, they are the most important. He urged all to be broader, more generous, bigger and wiser.
Ex-Governor A. E. Sleeper then spoke of his acquaintance and friendship with Mr. Doherty which began when they were associated together in the State Senate many years ago. E. V. Chilson, Deputy Secretary of State, in a very feeling and touching manner expressed his appreciation of Mr. and Mrs. Doherty and their friendship.
There was great applause when one of the former Clare citizens, Mr. Dennis E. Alward was introduced. Mr. Alward said, “I arrived in Clare 44 years ago, when pine stumps were in the street. There was a population of about 250 people. Mr. S. C. Kirkbride occupied a residence on the site of this hotel at that time. That day I met for the first time, a young attorney, Mr. C. W. Perry. A young banker, C. H. Sutherland, a merchant, Nathan Bicknell, the father of James S. and William H. Bicknell and the family of Doherty’s. Mr. Doherty and I built our homes side by side, we had no money, but were great neighbors. When I came to Clare that first day, they were building the town hall and there was as much interest manifested by the citizens as if it were the capitol of the state. I was a stranger and all were interested in me and a young man on the roof of that building engaged in nailing on shingles paid too much attention to the stranger and hit his thumb with a hammer. His language was emphatic and sulphurous, but that man has been a builder ever since that time he worked on the town hall and he has always built substantial and well. I count myself fortunate to be able to come back to my home, to the city which will always be my home and pay tribute to what my friend Doherty's have done.”
Hon. James E. Davidson, of Bay City, and Senator Karcher, of Rose City, spoke briefly. Hon. W. W. Potter, of Hastings, who was a former resident of Clare county, was introduced. Judge Hart read telegrams and letters from Congressman Roy Woodruff, Hon. Leonard Freeman, Gov. Alex Groesbeck, Auditor General O. B. Fuller, Regent of the U. of M., Julius Beal, Sec’y. Of State Chas. DeLand, Hon. George Lord and others, who expressed regrets at being unable to be present. After the speaking, the tables and chairs were removed from the dining room and a goodly number of the guests danced until late in the evening.

I turned in my fafsa to all the schools i applied to on time, but just removed them all besides the one school i was committed to. Will ucr still take my fafsa application after i readded them to it? I plan on calling their financial aid office tmr morning but i kind of just wanted to see if i can find a general answer beforehand

Need advice on denied mental health claim
Hello. I recently got a decision back for my claim. My IBS claim was granted service connected at 30%, which is great. My PTSD related to MST was denied, however. This is my second denial for this specific claim, I’m not sure I can handle going through reliving the experience through another C&P questions/exam, frustration, anxiety, etc. My letter from a private practice DOES state my diagnosis, the medication I was prescribed, and that it is linked to service based within 2 years of my exit from the military.
Having said that, my favorable findings do state that I have been diagnosed with a few other things. The denial also states that “the evidence does not show a confirmed diagnosis of PTSD which would permit a finding of service connection” Does this mean they would consider my favorable findings as service connected? My VA record will show that I have been getting mental health care as soon as I got connected with the VA (within 6 months of my EAS in 2019) and have regularly since then. I was diagnosed with depression soon after I started seeing my therapist and she prescribed medication, eventually we tried to get me an ADHD screening and somewhere along the way I no longer wanted the meds and stopped the depression medication. That VA network was dog shit at the time and made me feel 1000x’s worse, my current one is so much better. The exam referenced in December 12th came from a therapist/psychologist at the VA.
At this point, I feel like I should’ve claimed anxiety or depression at first but was advised otherwise by the DAV where I was at the time. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess. So….any suggestions on how to move forward? New claim all together, HLR because my letter from doctor does state PTSD diagnosis? Thanks in advance. Sorry for the lengthy post.

I will try to keep this post brief.
My now husband and I met almost 2 years ago in Canada, he is from another country but has Canadian citizenship. He had never lived in Canada before we met, and pushed for us to go to his home country almost as soon as we met.
During our time together in Canada, we were passively looking for a house to purchase (I was house hunting solo before I met him, and we wanted to have a pied a terre in case we decided we would stay in Canada). We were almost going to give up when we found an amazing deal on a property needing major work in may 2023. We purchased it at ~50% of the municipal evaluation (montreal) and had to buy it in cash as the bank did not want to offer financing due to the condition (complete Reno, but mostly interior work including structural). I had cash saved up (~300k) and my husband initially was going to put ~250k but then backed out claiming he will have significant expenses when we were going to move (furnishing a house that is much bigger, paying the property taxes on it etc). He refused to let me purchase it on my own (claimed that the eventual mortgage once remodelled/loan of my parents would fall on both of us). I was pregnant at the time and didn’t want to argue, but also did not want to pass up on the deal. We ended up buying it in cash, my parents put 250k as a loan, and I put 300k. We were able to get a ~170k mortgage at 2% for 1 year from a mortgage transfer that my parents had on a home they had sold to help us with the renovations (I estimate it will maybe cost another 40-80k more).
Fast forward to today, we are in his home country and he is extremely controlling over finances. He has also started asking me to pay for things he originally said he would cover. Every expense is a fuss (including daycare for our 6 month old). Due to the situation and the fact that the house in Canada will be an investment property for the time being, I have asked him to discuss a more fair arrangement on this house; pay back 50% of what I put in (even though the house likely went up in a value and the yield for cash is incredibly favorable these days), or agree to transfer the house in my name (my preferred option). I explained that I need my financial independence back, would be happy to contribute to joint expenses and don’t want to ask him/ rely on him for purchases I want to make, and can use the rental income that will eventually be generated (long tail). He has flat out refused with no valid and reasonable explanation. He claims I came up with this just recently and that I can’t force him out although we discussed he would pay me back within a year or so. He owns several properties, likely a couple times over the value of this home, and owns them solo (most without mortgage) but refuses to allow me to have my own investment. I feel completely betrayed and am incredibly pissed at myself for originally agreeing to the deal. We do have a signed letter prepared by a Canadian notary that states that my parents and I will be disbursed our full amounts upon any refinancing or sale.
Please, I would like to know any recourse I may have to get the house back in my name, it’s my life savings and the only property in my name. I acted in good faith and really believed I could trust him but now I think I have to protect myself.
Ps I know I am in a fortunate position to own a home and don’t take it for granted.

I got a potential job lined up but i’ve been at the bux for 4 years now and im so scared to leave 🥴 Im an SSV and lately it has just gotten so taxing and so exhausting. opening 6 days in a row this week and i just wanna die 😭 but there’s so many pros and cons of both jobs and i need other opinions
the bux: 20.80/hr 5 min drive from my house. amazing coworkers. no typical bux drama at all. my SM is literally AMAZING. She is the perfect manager and is so caring and shows up for us. free college. transfer opportunities if i move. easy and flexible time off system. PTO rate is 1h20hrs
cons: overworked. so exhausted from work i don’t even have time to do the school i always end up failing. getting yelled at and berated multiple times a week. No interest moving up in the company. Not a consistent schedule (although usually opens).
Potential new job: 17/hr + potential commission set rotating schedule. 4 days off a week. work rotating weekends, and closed every sunday except for the last sunday of the month. schedule made months in advance. receptionist job, no more hustle and exhaustion. free laser hair removal. PTO rate is 1h17hrs
cons: 35-45 min drive. no free school. slight pay cut (with commission it almost evens out). have to request time off super in advance.
the new job is a receptionist at a laser hair removal place. My friend left bux to work there and she likes it. I don’t see a career for me at starbucks but i don’t know what exactly i want. This job feels like it would be a step down like im sorta embarrassed to say i’d be a receptionist but id mentally feel so much better and maybe i coukd actually start doing school id just have to get financial aid or pay 😭 idk what to do i love the crew at my store my team is amazing and i enjoy the work its just so much lately

Mainly: how to puff up my research section as I know that is the big differentiator for these schools.
SO... What holes or concerns can you help me identify in my application?
Brief history: I graduated with dual degrees in political science/public relations (GPA 3.89) from Alabama. Worked in marketing/communications for 3 years before realizing my calling. Doing my pre-req work at UAB (ranked #35 by US News list.) I'm lucky to have this strong program in my backyard and counting on name recognition of UAB in the industry.
Eyeing: Duke, UNC, UVA, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Tufts, Vandy, Boston, Emory, etc. (welcome any recommendations)

Hey, so normally i would post this on CUNY subreddit, but if anyone can help and clarify why this might be happenign then i'd appreciate it. I go to CCNY.
Basically, this is my first semester as a college student in CCNY because i deferred. I've done my FAFSA 2023-24 which covered tuiton, along time ago, but last december i forgot i can do my TAP. So i did that but all this time since i started in january, i hadn't heard nothing from TAP. Until this month, where i randomly got a revised package saying my TAP was processed and then disbursed. I was so excited because i can get it as a refund. Which was initially gonna happen as i did get an email saying i was gonna get a refund of $3,465. Fast foward a few days later, i went on CUNYfirst and saw there was charge. and it was the exact same as my TAP. My financial aid package once again was revised and it removed my TAP and it was reversed. I kept blaming myself because I must've did something wrong. But i've came to a possible reason why this is happening. I checked my eligibilty for TAP and when i scrolled down it says i've accumulated 0 credits and 0 GPA thus far. Again this is my first semester so i have no prior academic progression. So im guessing this might be the main culprit on why this is all happening. My professors still have yet to input final grades, so of course i don't have credits yet. Im guessing Financial aid thought "oh this student made no progress whatsoever so he needs to owe back this aid". When simply i haven't finished my first semester yet. If anyone sees this, do you think that once my grades and everything is finalized it might help my TAP refund and charge situation? Im not owing anybody anything, idc, especially due to an error or oversight. I've emailed my FA office several times including screenshots of my billing. I've have full-time credits and was eligible for tap prior to any of this, so i see no reason why im having issues with my TAP. I still have a few assignments left for my classes and then they'll put in final grades so im hoping this might fix any eligibilty and Financia aid discrepancies.

2024.05.21 01:05 iceman22frost Private Dental insurance(Dentaquest) through medicaid(Soonercare) denied 2 claims from my previous cleaning. Worried I have no shot at an appeal.

So in Oklahoma, Soonercare switched to private insurance companies for both dental and medical. I am on Dentaquest. I went in for a cleaning a few weeks ago and didn't think anything of it, the past year and a half or so that I've had Soonercare I would schedule a cleaning and never owed anymore than my co-pay. This time I chose a new dentist and scheduled a cleaning. Today I got a letter from Dentaquest saying they denied two claims nearing almost two hundred dollars, which is a lot of money to me atm.
The new dentist did some x-rays that I assumed were part of the cleaning but turns out they are only covered once every 3 years with soonercare. I didn't think anything of the x-rays as they are done often during cleanings in my experience.
I assume I'll get a bill from the dentist soon enough and I'm hesitant to call and see what I owe in chances of it speeding up the process and I'm not doing well financially at the moment. Since it is technically my fault for not making sure every single thing the dentist did was covered currently by my insurance, am I pretty much stuck with the bill? I'm still going to appeal just in case it works but it's really stressing me out, it's not a good time of my life to have this happen even though I feel ridiculous having such stress over 200 bucks.

Hi all, my friend recently got married and we headed to Queenstown for her Bachelorette. A mutual friend kind of just took over and organised the whole trip. Each time I tried to get involved she just ignored me.
I stated over 20 times that I’m struggling financially and tried to keep costs down. I’ve had to pay over $2k this year to get my car road worthy and have recently had to put down my 18 year old cat due to kidney failure and cancer. It’s been a really difficult year financially. The costs of the bachelorette even involved pjs from Peter Alexander for us and one as a gift for the bride. I clearly stated that I could not afford more than $30 for pjs but the cost for that alone came close to $100. Some of the cost was for Rata restaurant, which felt a bit out of touch as it is a very fancy restaurant and I had made it clear that I would like to keep costs low. During the dinner she made reference to the time she flew there on her father’s private jet. And when the bill arrived (over $1000) she laughed and said that her and her father often spend way more than that between the two of them at that restaurant.
She was hounding me for the payment but I told her that I would pay her back as soon as I get my paycheque. She then followed up with a threat that she would take me to court if I didn’t pay her the full amount when I got paid. I then blocked her on FB because i just couldn’t deal with it any longer. I had already paid the majority of the money back to her and the outstanding amount only came to $290. I got my paycheque and paid her the full amount as she requested thinking that would be the end of it.
Yesterday I got a letter in the mail from the district tribunal with a 30 page document outlining the costs that I owed her. I had assumed she filed it before I got my paycheque so I emailed the court asking if the matter is settled now that the full amount has been paid, but they said that they could only close the case if she requested they do so.
The amount in her court papers contains the full amount (which has been fully paid) and the $45 case fee that she paid. I don’t want to just pay the $45 as it does go a long way for me, and my pride has been so wounded by now that I feel pretty stubborn about paying her another $45.
Our mutual friend who is the bride has told me that she was informed the intention of the district tribunal was to mess up my credit score and make me pay an extra $45.
I understand how stupid this all sounds and I’m sorry I’ve gone on so long about it, but I’m not really sure what to do now. I think the court session is a complete waste of time for only $45 but I also can’t really spare another $45 on top of the hundreds of dollars that have already gone into this wedding. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

(Throwaway account - located in Ontario) —> Need advice re no lease and potential eviction. My apologies for the length, it overlaps an estate trust matter and those are hard to summarize succinctly.
Background: Family home, mother has been in it 32 years, raised son - home and large crop farm worth several M$ - held & adminstered in a trust at major chartered bank for son for two more years until he turns 30 as a result of death of father (husband) 22 years ago. Mother was not provided for in the will.
Can son now eject mother after she was a stay-at-home mom and raised him - putting her own career on hold - and for grades 3-8 had to drive him to a special school each school day 40 mins each way - among many normal mom things - he’s fine now as he outgrew the learning disability with time and support.
Son age 27, decided to stop supporting mother last August due to a disagreement.
(After he turned 19, he was providing her with support that initially was $3K a month and 4 yrs ago was then $4K a month - and prior to his age of 19, Mother was his guardian and was indirectly supported by the trust- son has extremely healthy trust income)-
Mother cannot qualify for legal aid as they say it is a trust matter - mother cannot afford a lawyer - has no savings as assumed she would always be support by the trust and is also age 60 and certified disabled. Disabled ankle to due a bad fall in 2001. Didnt qualify for disability after fall in 2001 because she was indirectly being supported by the trust and then her son directly.
After not working for 20 years she now makes about $1000 a month in a physically taxing service industry job and about 220 in CPP. Paid for groundkeeping and internet and takes out all the garbage each week.
Can he just throw her out as he indicated; change the locks and put all her stuff outside call the police and have her escorted from the property?
It’s a duplexed farmhouse and son moved over to other unit last May - before that, he and his common-law partner and Mother all resided in Mother’s unit.
Is she looking at homelessness?
A room for rent near her work is $1000.00 and would be a good fit but she would also have to leave her 14 year old dog with him. She is questioning how this can be allowed.
This doesn’t seem right. May be a civil matter? Are there any pro bono lawyers that do this kind of work. She has til June 15th and he said he is putting all the contents of her things in the yard and changing the locks and calling the police. She does not want to fight with him. He also has a ruthless financial advisors from Toronto and they want to rent out her part of the home where she has been for 32 years - for which they could get $4K a month.
Thank for any advice re legal and/or LTB avenues. No comments please on the family dynamics. It’s complicated as all families are and a social media sound bite has no nuance. Just looking for advice about legal / LTB avenues.

i'm currently at a decent liberal arts college where I can easily maintain a high GPA (and thus potentially use extra time prepping for the lsat), but I am considering transferring to higher-ranked colleges with better law school placement (using law school feeder data). These schools have either grade deflation or far less inflation than my current school. Also, I believe I could have stronger extra-curriculars and be more involved, but my letters of recommendation would likely be weaker (though I don't have any strong connections with any professors now). I do not qualify for aid at any school.
  1. for law school prospects, should I stay where I am at? again pros of staying: easy high gpa, extra LSAT prep time, potentially stronger letters of recommendation (somewhat unlikely), cons: minimal extra-curricular involvement and worse law school placement at current school
  2. for top law schools (t14+), does undergraduate prestige matter?

2024.05.21 00:39 Ok_Relation_7770 (Virginia) Rental company trying to take deductions out of my Security Deposit when I never moved in

Oh boy am I fired up right now!
So long story short, got offered a good job in a new city/state, found an apartment by the new employer and a fairly nice one all things considered as I was gonna make like 40% more than I do currently and get relocation assistance. All goes well, then this company rescinds my job offer 4 days before my first day because my background check pulled up a misdemeanor FROM 12 YEARS AGO, and I didn’t mention it to them before (so long and insignificant that I legitimately forgot)
Anyway, I had signed a lease that was going to start about a month later. Called them, did the notice to vacate thing and they put the apartment back up for rent. They certainly weren’t in a hurry so I ended up paying for one month.
They end up renting it out and my financial obligation ends on 03/27/24, as per their email.
I wait around counting down the 45 days until my security deposit check is legally supposed to come. It came today. I’m expecting my full deposit back $1095 and around $176 in prorated rent that I had paid. Open the check and see it’s written out for $869.51. And the attached letter shows that they’re taking $225.49 for paint retouching (I forget the exact wording I can find it tonight)
I’m used to big companies like this trying to fuck people over but I was pretty floored by this one. I never even received the keys to this place. I set foot in the apartment once and it was in December when I toured it while someone else lived there. I looked through the lease which mentions “reasonable wear & tear” as ineligible for security deposit deduction. So I feel like even if I had moved in I would not be able to get deducted for. The lease also mentions a “damage ammendum” but it is nowhere to be found. Unless that’s what the letter with the security deposit is?
And even if they somehow loophole’d their way out of my security deposit money, I am absolutely entitled to the $176.61 in prorated rent that I paid.
It’s $400~ but I am 100% petty enough and fed up with getting fucked over that I will fight for it if I can. This has been the worst 7 months of my life, I’m sick of shit beating me down.
I’m not exactly sure what I should do from here though, and I don’t want to contact them and screw myself over until I have a better idea.
Small claims? Contact a tenant lawyer? I saw I can also file a “consumer complaint” with the Virginia Attorney General.
Just looking for advice on what to do next, thanks in advance for any help
OH I ALMOST FORGOT, Virginia state law is 45 days for security deposit and this is postmarked for the 17th which was 51 days. I don’t know what can happen with that but I’ll gladly add it to the pile

Wilbur grew up with his parents, traveling salesmen, who never stayed in one place. Although Wilbur preferred to have a stable home, his parents would always blow off his suggestions.
“You already have a home. If you don’t like these accommodations, study hard and find a well-paying job when you grow up. If you can get there, I promise you, that you can buy a house and then live your life, however you want,” his mother would suggest.
“Listen to her. Your mommy knows the best,” his father would add.
Now, a Business Development Manager and a wiz when it came to numbers, he worked at a small startup company. Although the company made big profits from Wilbur’s ideas, it never really acknowledged his genius. He was proud of himself and his work, nevertheless. He took his parents’ advice and worked hard to get where he was. So, why won’t he be?
He got off work and was heading home when four masked men surrounded him. Before he realized anything, one of them held a gun at his temple, while the three others rummaged through his pockets. They pulled out his wallet, phone, and wristwatch, before punching him in the face. As Wilbur fell on all fours, bleeding out of his nose, the four men began kicking him from all directions, knocking the wind out of him.
“I didn’t resist. They took everything. Why are they still beating me?” were the last thoughts that went through his head.
He woke up in a hospital bed. The nurse who came to change the catheter bag was surprised and called the Doctor. Once the doctor came in and checked his vitals, he smiled at Wilbur.
“You are a lucky man,” he said. “You were in a coma for two months. We almost lost all hope. But you are awake now and your vitals are fine. You are stable. I think you will make a full recovery.”
And recover he did. After two more weeks in the hospital, he finally came out of the hospital. He thanked the Lord for bringing him back to the world of the living.
“Mother always said that I could get the life I wanted if I worked hard. It must be her blessings that brought me back again. Because I did work hard.” Wilbur smiled as his thoughts gave him inspiration and his parent’s memories evoked nostalgia.
Once he reached his apartment building, he checked his mailbox and found a letter for himself, along with some overdue bills. He put the bills in his pocket and opened the letter first since it was from his company. He froze after he read a few lines.
He had been let go for going AWOL for almost 3 months. The letter did hint that the office was aware of his predicament, but they just couldn’t “afford to keep him on a payroll with their tight budget” – the corporate version of “it’s not you, it’s me”.
With a heavy heart and the memories of his mother’s blessings, he took a deep breath and headed upstairs. Once he reached his apartment and tried to open the door, the key didn’t fit. Did they change the lock while he was away?
He went to the Landlord and knocked on the door. As soon as the landlord opened the door and saw him, his expression turned sour.
“Mr. Hanson. The key to my apartment isn’t working,” Wilbur said.
“I’m sorry to hear what had happened to you, Wilbur. You are a good man. You didn’t deserve it.” Hanson tried to change his sour expression to a sad one with obvious fakeness.
“Thank you, Mr. Hanson. About my- ”
“Yes. Unfortunately, the market has been horrible lately, with all the mugging in the area. Although the mugger gang has been arrested, the fallout remains. People just don’t want to rent these apartments anymore. So, I just couldn’t ignore it when I did find that couple willing to move into that apartment.”
“You gave my apartment to someone else?” Wilbur exclaimed.
“That’s my apartment, in case you forgot,” Hanson snapped, suddenly reverting to his true feelings. “I had the locks changed. You didn’t have much in the way of belongings, since the furniture in there are all mine. You can pick up your bag of clothes and laptop from the apartment manager.”
Wilbur just stood there, with his face in his hands. His whole life was crumbling down.
“Besides, you still owe me two months’ rent,” said Hanson quickly, finding a tinge of sympathy within him. “I will forgo that if you want.”
“I don’t have anywhere else to go.”
Hanson’s eyes lit up as he saw an opening. “Well, I can make another arrangement for you, if you like.”
“That’d be great.” Wilbur’s eyes lit up with hope.
“I have an acquaintance. He owns a three-bedroom house downtown and lives alone. I convinced the association to let him keep that rundown house,” Hanson said.
“He will allow me to stay with him?” Wilbur asked, unsure of where this is going.
“Yes, yes. He’s a bleeding heart. Besides, I have some understanding with him. I am sure that he will let you stay, even rent-free.”
“Rent-free?” Wilbur couldn’t believe his ears. It sounded too good to be true.
“Of course. But you have to do me a favor in return.” Hanson leaned in closer, “Don’t ever try to rent a house in this area again. Live there, with my friend Gere.”
“Why?” Wilbur asked with genuine curiosity.
“There have always been muggings around these parts. But what happened to you was the last straw that made the prices of real estate go down around these parts. It’d be good to not have your face around to remind people of that… tragedy.”
“I understand,” Wilbur said.
“And one more thing,” Hanson added. “You will still owe me my two months’ rent and all the bills. With interest, of course.”
“Of course, Mr. Hanson,” Wilbur said with a smile. “After what you are doing for me, I would love to continue our relationship.”

Gere


Gere came home and threw his bag on the sofa before heading to the kitchen. He had to prepare a meal for his guest as well; the regular mac-and-cheese won’t do. Hanson’s phone call on short notice left him little time to prepare.
As he prepared some mashed potatoes, chili, and beans, he still wondered how he got roped into taking a roommate by a man whom he barely knew. Since Hanson was an important member of the realtor’s association, he just could not refuse the request. After all, it was Hanson’s influence that allowed him to keep his family home from being demolished by the realtors.
In retrospect, it might have been a good deal for Gere to cave in and sell the house to the realtors for demolition, but he just couldn’t do it. His grandfather, and subsequently, his father lived at this place. He had a lot of emotions attached to this place.
Ding Dong!
Gere wiped his hands on his aprons and turned off the stove that he had just lit up. He hurried to the door and opened it. There stood Wilbur, broken and tired with two large bags at his feet. Upon seeing this man, Gere’s heart melted. The scars on his body and the mismatched outfit spoke volumes about this man’s plight.
“Wilbur. Come on in.” Gere picked up his bags for him. Wilbur didn’t even have the energy to refuse the aid.
“Mr. Hanson told me what happened to you. It’s a tragedy. Really,” Gere said, leading Wilbur to his room. “Don’t you worry about anything here. You can stay here as long as you like, till you get back on your feet.”
“That’s awfully kind of you,” Wilbur said. “I’m really sorry to impose.”
“Not at all,” Gere replied. “You aren’t imposing. If anyone, it was Mr. Hanson who imposed. But honestly, if I am to keep this house, I need him to keep the Realtors on a leash. We have a mutual understanding.”
Gere put down the bags in the room and turned to Wilbur.
“He imposed, but I agreed. Not because of him, because of what happened to you. I just could not leave you out like that, man.” Gere gave him a pat on the upper arm and beckoned, “Come on. Wash up and come to eat. Dinner’s almost ready.”
Wilbur smiled at this generous man, genuinely thankful for his assistance. He was starving – hospital food leaves much to be desired and it was already late.

Cousins


Wilbur and Gere sat on the sofa, staring at the TV, but not focused on what was going on on-screen.
“So, these cousins of yours. They are not involved with anything bad, right?” Gere asked.
“Not at all, Gere. You know me. They are practically family.” Wilbur rubbed his eyebrows.
“What’s up with all these muggings?” Gere asked with severe annoyance.
“They had arrested the gang, last I heard. Yet, here we are. My cousins are scared to go out in that neighborhood and have requested if they could stay over, just for a couple of days.”
“Yeah. Of course. Your family is my family. You know that, right?”
“Thanks Gere. You are a saint.”
“Meh! Don’t worry. It’s not like I am using those rooms anyway.” Gere took a pause. “How’s your job search going?”
“Same old, same old. The job market isn’t really that good right now.”
“But it’s been four months already,” Gere said with genuine concern. “Now you are scaring me. What if I lose my job? In this market, I don’t think I can get another anytime soon.”
“Hey, man. Just be grateful that you still have your job. I don’t know what I will do. The exorbitant interest rates Mr. Hanson is imposing on me have been piling up. Now I must pay 3 months’ rent. Without a job, I can’t even repay one.”
“Don’t worry too much.” Gere rubbed Wilbur’s head. “Just bring your cousins in, enjoy some quality time with your fam.”
“Will do. How’s your Karate lessons going?” Wilbur asked.
“Got my Brown belt. Can’t skip classes when my office is paying for a hobby,” Gere said with a smile. “Much better than the gym membership they offered me.”

Mugging


Gere walked out of the bank, cashing his paycheck. Payday was always on the 7th of the month and he eagerly waited for this day, every month. He preferred to use cash since he would often have to lend some to his roommates - if one could call them that.
Gere walked down the pavement, counting the cash again. Distracted, he almost bumped into someone around the corner.
“Hey! Wilbur. What are you doing out here, man?” Gere asked with a tired smile.
“Gere, buddy. I need some money, very urgently,” Wilbur said.
“Well… sure. But you could have waited till I got home.”
Wilbur just snatched the wad of cash from his hands.
“Hey!”
“Thanks, man. I owe you one. I just need to pay Mr. Hanson back, before he increases the interest.”
Gere grabbed him by the arm and stopped him from leaving. “That’s not cool, bro. Give it back. We still have to budget for the whole month.”
“Let go of me,” Wilbur said, glaring at him.
“What’s gotten into- ” Gere was knocked in the head from behind, before he could finish his sentence.
As he drifted into unconsciousness, he remembered seeing Wilbur walk away with one of his cousins and his hard-earned money.

Interloper


Gere opened his door with the keys and froze at the sight. Wilbur and his cousins were sitting on the sofa, drinking beer and eating pizza while watching a game.
“You attacked me!” Gere exclaimed, seeing their audacity. “Give me my money and get out of my house.”
Wilbur put down his beer and shrugged, “Or what?”
“You caught me off-guard back then,” Gere growled. “Or what? Or else, I will make you.”
All four of them stood up and spread their arms. “Make me, then, fool. In case you haven’t noticed, you are outnumbered.”
Before Gere could say anything, one of the cousins rushed forth and threw a punch at him. Gere parried the blow with his forearm, moving in closer to hit him in the solar plexus with his knee. Regardless of how confident Gere was or his aptitude in fighting, Wilbur did have the number advantage.
Before Gere could even turn towards the other assailants, Wilbur and his cousins just grabbed him haphazardly from all directions and pinned him down to the ground. Wilbur turned to one of his cousins, once they secured Gere down.
“Call 911.”
“911?” Gere shouted. “Yeah. That’s a mighty fine idea. Bring out the boys in uniform.”

Bail

Gere sat in his cell with his head in his hands. He might have gotten a bit too excited and failed to explain the entire situation to the cops. In retrospect, even he would have considered himself a threat if he were in the cop’s shoes.
There was a bang on the cell door. “Come on out. Your bail has been posted.”
Gere came out to see Phyllis, his lawyer, waiting to pick him up.
“Good to see me?” Phyllis asked.
“You have no idea,” Gere said, rubbing the bump on his head that he suffered when the Wilburs pinned him to the ground.
“You are in big trouble, Gere,” Phyllis reminded, handing him his belongings.
They walked out of the station, got into Phyllis’ car, and finally had the chance to talk. Gere explained everything to Phyllis.
“I see. I will be honest, Gere: things are looking bad for you,” Phyllis blurted in a matter-of-fact way.
“What? How so? They were in my house, with my money. You could just present them as intruders.”
“Intruders? Too many witnesses will admit that you let them stay with you for five months now. That won’t stick.” Phyllis increased the fan speed of the AC while driving.
“What? What about my money? They attacked me and stole it.” Gere felt his voice rising, yet again, just like it happened back with the police.
“You didn’t see the attacker, did you? You said you were attacked from behind.”
“But I saw them walk away.”
“Half unconscious and still without proof that they did it. Circumstantial at best.”
“But they attacked me at my house as well,” Gere yelled.
“When the cops came, the big guy had a bleeding nose and a severe bruise on his abdomen. They have the proof that you attacked them. You don’t. Now it’s their words against yours. And in court, four is better than one.” Phyllis turned the car and continued.
“Besides, that’s not your house either.”
“What do you mean that’s not my house?” Gere asked in genuine confusion.
“They got some documents from the realtor’s association. They are claiming that the house was due to be demolished due to some new regulations they had set up. Some Hanson drew up the papers.”
“Who is he to sign the deeds to my house?” Gere shouted in frustration.
“The head of The Realtor’s Association. Your house is halting the development of the area that the realtors are planning. Even the mayor approved it. But don’t worry. This is one thing we can bring to the court. All your neighbors are willing to testify your legitimacy as the owner as well as give character affirmation. I think there’s hope. Finger’s crossed.”

Evicted


Gere stood at his own doorstep, staring murder at Wilbur, smiling at him. Phyllis stood at a safe distance, not ready to get into a physical altercation, should one begin.
“Here’s your phone and your laptop, Gere,” Wilbur said, handing him the things.
With his judgment clouded by anger and confusion, he just took them from his hand.
“What’s the meaning of this?” Gere demanded.
“I am offering you your phone and laptop. It’s a good deal. Take it and leave. You are being evicted from House Wilbur.”
Gere walked up to Phyllis and handed her his possessions. Before Phyllis or Wilbur could realize what was going on, Gere turned around to land a mighty side-kick into Wilbur’s face.

Court


“Will you please tell the court what happened on October 7th?” the prosecutor inquired.
“I got mugged on my way home from the bank.”
“And you claim that Mr. Wilbur had mugged you, right?”
“Yes,” Gere replied.
“Did you see the attacker?”
“Yes.”
“Where did the attacker hit you?”
“On the back of my head.”
“Then how could you have seen him? Do you have eyes on the back of your head, Mr. Gere?”
The entire courtroom laughed. The judge silenced them with his gavel.
“I saw them leave before going unconscious.”
“So, you took this circumstantial evidence as a reason to go home and attack them? You weren’t even in your right mind, half unconscious.”
“I didn’t attack them. They attacked me first.”
“Your honor, let these four testimonies and Exhibit. B, photos of the injuries on Mr. Wilbur’s cousin’s body show that Mr. Gere was the first to attack.”
“Yes, that’s because they punched me and I blocked it, before fighting back!” Gere begged.
“So, you admit to attacking them.”
“Objection. Leading the witness.” Phyllis stood up.
“Sustained,” the Judge allowed.
“Regardless. There is no doubt about the attacks, given the evidence.”
“It was self-defense!” Gere shouted.
“Of course it was. Mr. Wilbur and his cousins have the right to defend themselves,” the prosecutor said with a wink.
“They came into my house and attacked me! How can they be defending themselves?” Gere asked.
“House Wilbur isn’t your house, Mr. Gere. We have documents to prove that.”
“Nonsense! All my neighbors have testified that I have been living there for generations!”
“If your neighbors love you so much and if you are such a great guy, according to them, why aren’t they taking you into their home? Why are you just spending your days harassing Mr. Wilbur? Is it not true that you have assaulted him multiple times after that and violated your restraining order?”
Gere remained silent.
“Let this be known, Milord, that Mr. Gere has even dug a tunnel under the boundary wall to sneak in and attack Mr. Wilbur. Luckily, his karate lessons being paid for by his company, could not help him against four grown men with the law on their side.”
“They mugged me and invaded my home!” Gere shouted.
“Are you denying that Mr. Wilbur has been mugged and subjected to terrible torture a few months back?”
“What? No. How is this relevant?” Gere asked.
“And even his cousins were mugged, which forced them to escape to your house.”
“My house.”
“Pardon me, your honor. I misspoke. It’s just a slip of the tongue. My client, Mr. Wilbur, wants nothing but to make peace with Mr. Gere. In fact, he has offered Mr. Gere his phone and laptop to broker peace.”
“They took my house! What am I going to do with a Laptop and a Phone? I want my house back!”
The judge shouted, “Order, Order.”
“Milord. Mr. Wilbur has a lineage dating back to the Native Americans. According to this Genealogy and this DNA report, he is one part Native American and thirty-one parts German. That means, his ancestors, the native Americans, were the original owners of all the lands around here. That makes him the rightful owner of that house today. Furthermore, Mr. Wilbur’s mother has promised him a home should he work hard. And we all know how much hardships he went through. He got mugged and hospitalized. Mr. Gere is denying that he and his cousins got mugged.”
The masses in the court and jury just nodded in agreement. Upon seeing this reaction, the Prosecutor raised his voice to present his closing statement.
“Mr. Wilbur is an innocent man, who just can’t catch a break. The muggers, you, and your neighbors; no one is just ready to leave Mr. Wilbur alone. His mother has promised him a home and you are denying him that. His ancestors were from here and you are denying him that.”
The judge turned to look Gere in the eyes, unblinking. The whole court remained silent for a few seconds before the Judge made his verdict.
“Should Mr. Wilbur want to press more charges against you, all of them will be added to your sentence. You, Mr. Gere, are a terrorist. And I condemn you to prison for life, without food, water, or electricity.”

Hello.
I've dabbled into fighting games off and on for a few years now - SF4, Tekken 3, a touch of Blazblue - couldn't wrap my grass around that one. I'm deciding to focus down on SF because of the relative simplicity of the combat controls. I'm very much a noob, duh, so I'm trying to figure out whether to buy Sf5 or SF6. On the one hand, the Deluxe version of Sf5 is wonderfully cheap nowadays at a about 25 USD, but SF6 most likely has the larger player base and I've heard that their single player is actually really good at helping to drill in the basics of fighting fundamentals without it feeling like as much of a slog. Unfortunately money is a bit of a factor and it's the main reason SF5 is still appealing to me (that and Sakura hasn't been added to the SF6 roster yet, from my knowledge); I'm willing to pay for sf6 if it's the better choice, it's just not the financially optimal choice of the two.
As a person who does aspire to eventually climb the ranks to intermediate+ rank over the next couple years, which game will offer the more fulfilling experience?
